Error: the entity type requires a primary key

I came here with similar error:

System.InvalidOperationException: 'The entity type 'MyType' requires a primary key to be defined.'

After reading answer by hvd, realized I had simply forgotten to make my key property 'public'. This..

namespace MyApp.Models.Schedule
{
    public class MyType
    {
        [Key]
        int Id { get; set; }

        // ...

Should be this..

namespace MyApp.Models.Schedule
{
    public class MyType
    {
        [Key]
        public int Id { get; set; } // must be public!

        // ...

How to resolve Value cannot be null. Parameter name: source in linq?

Error message clearly says that source parameter is null. Source is the enumerable you are enumerating. In your case it is ListMetadataKor object. And its definitely null at the time you are filtering it second time. Make sure you never assign null to this list. Just check all references to this list in your code and look for assignments.

Transparent ARGB hex value

Just use this :

android:background="#00FFFFFF"

it will do your work.

'System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException' occurred in PresentationFramework.dll

This is often caused by an attempt to process a null object. An example, trying to empty a Bindable list that is null will trigger the exception:

public class MyViewModel {
    [BindableProperty]
    public virtual IList<Products> ProductsList{ get; set; }

    public MyViewModel ()
    {
        ProductsList.Clear(); // here is the problem
    }
}

This could easily be fixed by checking for null:

if (ProductsList!= null) ProductsList.Clear();

Creating SolidColorBrush from hex color value

using System.Windows.Media;

byte R = Convert.ToByte(color.Substring(1, 2), 16);
byte G = Convert.ToByte(color.Substring(3, 2), 16);
byte B = Convert.ToByte(color.Substring(5, 2), 16);
SolidColorBrush scb = new SolidColorBrush(Color.FromRgb(R, G, B));
//applying the brush to the background of the existing Button btn:
btn.Background = scb;

How to convert color code into media.brush?

For simplicity you could create an extension:-

    public static SolidColorBrush ToSolidColorBrush(this string hex_code)
    {
        return (SolidColorBrush)new BrushConverter().ConvertFromString(hex_code);
    }

And then to use:-

 SolidColorBrush accentBlue = "#3CACDC".ToSolidColorBrush();

How do I bind a List<CustomObject> to a WPF DataGrid?

You dont need to give column names manually in xaml. Just set AutoGenerateColumns property to true and your list will be automatically binded to DataGrid. refer code. XAML Code:

<Grid>
    <DataGrid x:Name="MyDatagrid" AutoGenerateColumns="True" Height="447" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="20,85,0,0" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="799"  ItemsSource="{Binding Path=ListTest, Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}"  CanUserAddRows="False"> </Grid>

C#

Public Class Test
{
    public string m_field1_Test{get;set;}
    public string m_field2_Test { get; set; }
    public Test()
    {
        m_field1_Test = "field1";
        m_field2_Test = "field2";
    }
    public MainWindow()
    {

        listTest = new List<Test>();

        for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)
        {
            obj = new Test();
            listTest.Add(obj);

        }

        this.MyDatagrid.ItemsSource = ListTest;

        InitializeComponent();

    }

Updating GUI (WPF) using a different thread

You can use Dispatcher.Invoke to update your GUI from a secondary thread.

Here is an example:

    private void Window_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
    {
        new Thread(DoSomething).Start();
    }
    public void DoSomething()
    {
        for (int i = 0; i < 100000000; i++)
        {
               this.Dispatcher.Invoke(()=>{
               textbox.Text=i.ToString();
               });
        }
    }

How do I get the color from a hexadecimal color code using .NET?

The three variants below give exactly the same color. The last one has the benefit of being highlighted in the Visual Studio 2010 IDE (maybe it's ReSharper that's doing it) with proper color.

var cc1 = System.Drawing.ColorTranslator.FromHtml("#479DEE");

var cc2 = System.Drawing.Color.FromArgb(0x479DEE);

var cc3 = System.Drawing.Color.FromArgb(0x47, 0x9D, 0xEE);

How can I bind a background color in WPF/XAML?

You can still use "Background" as the property name, as long as you give your window a name and use this name on the "Source" of the Binding.

How to check size of a file using Bash?

I would use du's --threshold for this. Not sure if this option is available in all versions of du but it is implemented in GNU's version.

Quoting from du(1)'s manual:

-t, --threshold=SIZE
       exclude entries smaller than SIZE if positive, or entries greater
       than SIZE if negative

Here's my solution, using du --threshold= for OP's use case:

THRESHOLD=90k
if [[ -z "$(du --threshold=${THRESHOLD} file.txt)" ]]; then
    mail -s "file.txt size is below ${THRESHOLD}, please fix. " [email protected] < /dev/null
    mv -f /root/tmp/file.txt /var/www/file.txt
fi

The advantage of that, is that du can accept an argument to that option in a known format - either human as in 10K, 10MiB or what ever you feel comfortable with - you don't need to manually convert between formats / units since du handles that.

For reference, here's the explanation on this SIZE argument from the man page:

The SIZE argument is an integer and optional unit (example: 10K is
10*1024). Units are K,M,G,T,P,E,Z,Y (powers of 1024) or KB,MB,... (powers
of 1000). Binary prefixes can be used, too: KiB=K, MiB=M, and so on.

Fastest way to download a GitHub project

Updated July 2016

As of July 2016, the Download ZIP button has moved under Clone or download to extreme-right of header under the Code tab:

Download ZIP (2013)

If you don't see the button:

  • Make sure you've selected <> Code tab from right side navigation menu, or
  • Repo may not have a zip prepared. Add /archive/master.zip to the end of the repository URL and to generate a zipfile of the master branch.

    http://github.com/user/repository/

-to-

http://github.com/user/repository/archive/master.zip

to get the master branch source code in a zip file. You can do the same with tags and branch names, by replacing master in the URL above with the name of the branch or tag.

LINQ Aggregate algorithm explained

It partly depends on which overload you're talking about, but the basic idea is:

  • Start with a seed as the "current value"
  • Iterate over the sequence. For each value in the sequence:
    • Apply a user-specified function to transform (currentValue, sequenceValue) into (nextValue)
    • Set currentValue = nextValue
  • Return the final currentValue

You may find the Aggregate post in my Edulinq series useful - it includes a more detailed description (including the various overloads) and implementations.

One simple example is using Aggregate as an alternative to Count:

// 0 is the seed, and for each item, we effectively increment the current value.
// In this case we can ignore "item" itself.
int count = sequence.Aggregate(0, (current, item) => current + 1);

Or perhaps summing all the lengths of strings in a sequence of strings:

int total = sequence.Aggregate(0, (current, item) => current + item.Length);

Personally I rarely find Aggregate useful - the "tailored" aggregation methods are usually good enough for me.

How to build and fill pandas dataframe from for loop?

I may be wrong, but I think the accepted answer by @amit has a bug.

from pandas import DataFrame as df
x = [1,2,3]
y = [7,8,9,10]

# this gives me a syntax error at 'for' (Python 3.7)
d1 = df[[a, "A", b, "B"] for a in x for b in y]

# this works
d2 = df([a, "A", b, "B"] for a in x for b in y)

# and if you want to add the column names on the fly
# note the additional parentheses
d3 = df(([a, "A", b, "B"] for a in x for b in y), columns = ("l","m","n","o"))

R - argument is of length zero in if statement

You can use isTRUE for such cases. isTRUE is the same as { is.logical(x) && length(x) == 1 && !is.na(x) && x }

If you use shiny there you could use isTruthy which covers the following cases:

  • FALSE

  • NULL

  • ""

  • An empty atomic vector

  • An atomic vector that contains only missing values

  • A logical vector that contains all FALSE or missing values

  • An object of class "try-error"

  • A value that represents an unclicked actionButton()

Could not load file or assembly System.Web.Http.WebHost after published to Azure web site

The dll is missing in the published (deployed environment). That is the reason why it is working in the local i.e. Visual Studio but not in the Azure Website Environment.

Just do Copy Local = true in the properties for the assembly(System.Web.Http.WebHost) and then do a redeploy, it should work fine.

When to use the !important property in CSS

This is the real life scenario

Imagine this scenario

  1. You have a global CSS file that sets visual aspects of your site globally.
  2. You (or others) use inline styles on elements themselves which is usually very bad practice.

In this case you could set certain styles in your global CSS file as important, thus overriding inline styles set directly on elements.

Actual real world example?

This kind of scenario usually happens when you don't have total control over your HTML. Think of solutions in SharePoint for instance. You'd like your part to be globally defined (styled), but some inline styles you can't control are present. !important makes such situations easier to deal with.

Other real life scenarios would also include some badly written jQuery plugins that also use inline styles...

I suppose you got the idea by now and can come up with some others as well.

When do you decide to use !important?

I suggest you don't use !important unless you can't do it any other way. Whenever it's possible to avoid it, avoid it. Using lots of !important styles will make maintenance a bit harder, because you break the natural cascading in your stylesheets.

How can I output UTF-8 from Perl?

use utf8; does not enable Unicode output - it enables you to type Unicode in your program. Add this to the program, before your print() statement:

binmode(STDOUT, ":utf8");

See if that helps. That should make STDOUT output in UTF-8 instead of ordinary ASCII.

Detect Safari browser

I know this question is old, but I thought of posting the answer anyway as it may help someone. The above solutions were failing in some edge cases, so we had to implement it in a way that handles iOS, Desktop, and other platforms separately.

function isSafari() {
    var ua = window.navigator.userAgent;
    var iOS = !!ua.match(/iP(ad|od|hone)/i);
    var hasSafariInUa = !!ua.match(/Safari/i);
    var noOtherBrowsersInUa = !ua.match(/Chrome|CriOS|OPiOS|mercury|FxiOS|Firefox/i)
    var result = false;
    if(iOS) { //detecting Safari in IOS mobile browsers
        var webkit = !!ua.match(/WebKit/i);
        result = webkit && hasSafariInUa && noOtherBrowsersInUa
    } else if(window.safari !== undefined){ //detecting Safari in Desktop Browsers
        result = true;
    } else { // detecting Safari in other platforms
        result = hasSafariInUa && noOtherBrowsersInUa
    }
    return result;
}

Best timestamp format for CSV/Excel?

Try MM/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss a format.

Java code to create XML file.

xmlResponse.append("mydate>").append(this.formatDate(resultSet.getTimestamp("date"), "MM/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss a")).append("");

public String formatDate(Date date, String format)
{
    String dateString = "";
    if(null != date)
    {
        SimpleDateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat(format);
        dateString = dateFormat.format(date);
    }
    return dateString;
}

Normal arguments vs. keyword arguments

Using Python 3 you can have both required and non-required keyword arguments:

Optional: (default value defined for param 'b')

def func1(a, *, b=42):
    ...
func1(value_for_a) # b is optional and will default to 42

Required (no default value defined for param 'b'):

def func2(a, *, b):
    ...
func2(value_for_a, b=21) # b is set to 21 by the function call
func2(value_for_a) # ERROR: missing 1 required keyword-only argument: 'b'`

This can help in cases where you have many similar arguments next to each other especially if they are of the same type, in that case I prefer using named arguments or I create a custom class if arguments belong together.

4) Open your app that crashes to generate crash logs

5) Ctrl+C to stop terminal and look for the logs associated with the app that crashes. It may say something like the following:

AndroidRuntime: FATAL EXCEPTION: main

How to add rows dynamically into table layout

You are doing it right; every time you need to add a row, simply so new TableRow(), etc. It might be easier for you to inflate the new row from XML though.

Recommended way to insert elements into map

map[key] = value is provided for easier syntax. It is easier to read and write.

The reason for which you need to have default constructor is that map[key] is evaluated before assignment. If key wasn't present in map, new one is created (with default constructor) and reference to it is returned from operator[].

Convert string to int array using LINQ

$(document).on('click', '#id', function() {}) vs $('#id').on('click', function(){})

Consider following code

<ul id="myTask">
  <li>Coding</li>
  <li>Answering</li>
  <li>Getting Paid</li>
</ul>

Now, here goes the difference

// Remove the myTask item when clicked.
$('#myTask').children().click(function () {
  $(this).remove()
});

Now, what if we add a myTask again?

$('#myTask').append('<li>Answer this question on SO</li>');

Clicking this myTask item will not remove it from the list, since it doesn't have any event handlers bound. If instead we'd used .on, the new item would work without any extra effort on our part. Here's how the .on version would look:

$('#myTask').on('click', 'li', function (event) {
  $(event.target).remove()
});

Summary:

The difference between .on() and .click() would be that .click() may not work when the DOM elements associated with the .click() event are added dynamically at a later point while .on() can be used in situations where the DOM elements associated with the .on() call may be generated dynamically at a later point.

Simplest two-way encryption using PHP

PHP 7.2 moved completely away from Mcrypt and the encryption now is based on the maintainable Libsodium library.

All your encryption needs can be basically resolved through Libsodium library.

// On Alice's computer:
$msg = 'This comes from Alice.';
$signed_msg = sodium_crypto_sign($msg, $secret_sign_key);

// On Bob's computer:
$original_msg = sodium_crypto_sign_open($signed_msg, $alice_sign_publickey);
if ($original_msg === false) {
    throw new Exception('Invalid signature');
} else {
    echo $original_msg; // Displays "This comes from Alice."
}

Can a WSDL indicate the SOAP version (1.1 or 1.2) of the web service?

SOAP 1.1 uses namespace http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/soap/

SOAP 1.2 uses namespace http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/soap12/

The wsdl is able to define operations under soap 1.1 and soap 1.2 at the same time in the same wsdl. Thats useful if you need to evolve your wsdl to support new functionality that requires soap 1.2 (eg. MTOM), in this case you dont need to create a new service but just evolve the original one.

How Connect to remote host from Aptana Studio 3

From the Project Explorer, expand the project you want to hook up to a remote site (or just right click and create a new Web project that's empty if you just want to explore a remote site from there). There's a "Connections" node, right click it and select "Add New connection...". A dialog will appear, at bottom you can select the destination as Remote and then click the "New..." button. There you can set up an FTP/FTPS/SFTP connection.

That's how you set up a connection that's tied to a project, typically for upload/download/sync between it and a project.

You can also do Window > Show View > Remote. From that view, you can click the globe icon in the upper right to add connections and in this view you can just browse your remote connections.

How do I find the install time and date of Windows?

After trying a variety of methods, I figured that the NTFS volume creation time of the system volume is probably the best proxy. While there are tools to check this (see this link ) I wanted a method without an additional utility. I settled on the creation date of "C:\System Volume Information" and it seemed to check out in various cases.

One-line of PowerShell to get it is:

([DateTime](Get-Item -Force 'C:\System Volume Information\').CreationTime).ToString('MM/dd/yyyy')

What is the difference between mocking and spying when using Mockito?

If there is an object with 8 methods and you have a test where you want to call 7 real methods and stub one method you have two options:

  1. Using a mock you would have to set it up by invoking 7 callRealMethod and stub one method
  2. Using a spy you have to set it up by stubbing one method

The official documentation on doCallRealMethod recommends using a spy for partial mocks.

See also javadoc spy(Object) to find out more about partial mocks. Mockito.spy() is a recommended way of creating partial mocks. The reason is it guarantees real methods are called against correctly constructed object because you're responsible for constructing the object passed to spy() method.

If used inside registry key, folder parameter can be provided with %1:

"C:\Program Files\Git\git-bash.exe" --cd="%1"

Error: Address already in use while binding socket with address but the port number is shown free by `netstat`

Even icfantv's answer to this question is already perfect, I still have more findings in my test.

As a server socket in listening status, if it only in listening status, and even it accepts request and getting data from the client side, but without any data sending action. We still could restart the server at once after it's stopped. But if any data sending action happens in the server side to the client, the same service(same port) restart will have this error: (Address already in use).

I think this is caused by the TCP/IP design principles. When the server send the data back to client, it must ensure the data sending succeed, in order to do this, the OS(Linux) need monitor the connection even the server application closed this socket. But I still believe kernel socket designer could improve this issue.

Changing upload_max_filesize on PHP

You can't use shorthand notation to set configuration values outside of PHP.ini. I assume it's falling back to 2MB as the compiled default when confronted with a bad value.

On the other hand, I don't think upload_max_filesize could be set using ini_set(). The "official" list states that it is PHP_INI_PERDIR .

Convert Java Date to UTC String

tl;dr

You asked:

I was looking for a one-liner like:

Ask and ye shall receive. Convert from terrible legacy class Date to its modern replacement, Instant.

myJavaUtilDate.toInstant().toString()

2020-05-05T19:46:12.912Z

java.time

In Java 8 and later we have the new java.time package built in (Tutorial). Inspired by Joda-Time, defined by JSR 310, and extended by the ThreeTen-Extra project.

The best solution is to sort your date-time objects rather than strings. But if you must work in strings, read on.

An Instant represents a moment on the timeline, basically in UTC (see class doc for precise details). The toString implementation uses the DateTimeFormatter.ISO_INSTANT format by default. This format includes zero, three, six or nine digits digits as needed to display fraction of a second up to nanosecond precision.

String output = Instant.now().toString(); // Example: '2015-12-03T10:15:30.120Z'

If you must interoperate with the old Date class, convert to/from java.time via new methods added to the old classes. Example: Date::toInstant.

myJavaUtilDate.toInstant().toString()

You may want to use an alternate formatter if you need a consistent number of digits in the fractional second or if you need no fractional second.

Another route if you want to truncate fractions of a second is to use ZonedDateTime instead of Instant, calling its method to change the fraction to zero.

Note that we must specify a time zone for ZonedDateTime (thus the name). In our case that means UTC. The subclass of ZoneID, ZoneOffset, holds a convenient constant for UTC. If we omit the time zone, the JVM’s current default time zone is implicitly applied.

String output = ZonedDateTime.now( ZoneOffset.UTC ).withNano( 0 ).toString();  // Example: 2015-08-27T19:28:58Z

Table of date-time types in Java, both modern and legacy

About java.time

The java.time framework is built into Java 8 and later. These classes supplant the troublesome old legacy date-time classes such as java.util.Date, Calendar, & SimpleDateFormat.

To learn more, see the Oracle Tutorial. And search Stack Overflow for many examples and explanations. Specification is JSR 310.

The Joda-Time project, now in maintenance mode, advises migration to the java.time classes.

You may exchange java.time objects directly with your database. Use a JDBC driver compliant with JDBC 4.2 or later. No need for strings, no need for java.sql.* classes. Hibernate 5 & JPA 2.2 support java.time.

Where to obtain the java.time classes?

Joda-Time

UPDATE: The Joda -Time project is now in maintenance mode, with the team advising migration to the java.time classes.

I was looking for a one-liner

Easy if using the Joda-Time 2.3 library. ISO 8601 is the default formatting.

Time Zone

In the code example below, note that I am specifying a time zone rather than depending on the default time zone. In this case, I'm specifying UTC per your question. The Z on the end, spoken as "Zulu", means no time zone offset from UTC.

Example Code

// import org.joda.time.*;

String output = new DateTime( DateTimeZone.UTC );

Stylesheet not updating

I had same issue. One of the reasons was, my application was cached and I was performing local build.

I would prefer deleting the css file and re-adding it again with changes if none of the above comments work.

jsPDF multi page PDF with HTML renderer

here's an example using html2canvas & jspdf, although how you generate the canvas doesn't matter--we're just going to use the height of that as the breakpoint on a for loop, in which a new page is created and content added to it.

after the for loop, the pdf is saved.

function makePDF() {

       var quotes = document.getElementById('container-fluid');
       html2canvas(quotes)
      .then((canvas) => {
            //! MAKE YOUR PDF
            var pdf = new jsPDF('p', 'pt', 'letter');

            for (var i = 0; i <= quotes.clientHeight/980; i++) {
                //! This is all just html2canvas stuff
                var srcImg  = canvas;
                var sX      = 0;
                var sY = 980*i; // start 980 pixels down for every new page
                var sWidth  = 900;
                var sHeight = 980;
                var dX      = 0;
                var dY      = 0;
                var dWidth  = 900;
                var dHeight = 980;

                window.onePageCanvas = document.createElement("canvas");
                onePageCanvas.setAttribute('width', 900);
                onePageCanvas.setAttribute('height', 980);
                var ctx = onePageCanvas.getContext('2d');
                // details on this usage of this function:
                // https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Canvas_API/Tutorial/Using_images#Slicing
                ctx.drawImage(srcImg,sX,sY,sWidth,sHeight,dX,dY,dWidth,dHeight);

                // document.body.appendChild(canvas);
                var canvasDataURL = onePageCanvas.toDataURL("image/png", 1.0);

                var width         = onePageCanvas.width;
                var height        = onePageCanvas.clientHeight;

                //! If we're on anything other than the first page,
                // add another page
                if (i > 0) {
                    pdf.addPage(612, 791); //8.5" x 11" in pts (in*72)
                }
                //! now we declare that we're working on that page
                pdf.setPage(i+1);
                //! now we add content to that page!
                pdf.addImage(canvasDataURL, 'PNG', 20, 40, (width*.62), (height*.62));

            }
            //! after the for loop is finished running, we save the pdf.
            pdf.save('Test.pdf');
        }
      });
    }

Using CRON jobs to visit url?

You can also use the local commandline php-cli:

It is faster and decrease load for your webserver.

SSRS the definition of the report is invalid

The report definition is not valid or supported by this version of Reporting Services. This could be the result of publishing a report definition of a later version of Reporting Services, or that the report definition contains XML that is not well-formed or the XML is not valid based on the Report Definition schema.

I got this error when I used ReportSync to upload some .rdl files to SQL Server Report Services. In my case, the issue was that these .rdl files had some Text Box containing characters like ©, (Em dash), (En dash) characters, etc. When uploading .rdl files using ReportSync, I had to encode these characters (&copy;, &mdash;, &ndash;, etc.) and use Placeholder Properties to set the Markup type to HTML in order to get rid of this error.

I wouldn't get this error If I manually uploaded each of the .rdl files one-by-one using SQL Server Reporting Services. But I have a lot of .rdl files and uploading each one individually would be time-consuming, which is why I use ReportSync to mass upload all .rdl files.

Sorry, if my answer doesn't seem relevant, but I hope this helps anyone else getting this error message when dealing with SSRS .rdl files.

Java Compare Two List's object values?

String myData1 = list1.toString();
String myData2 = list2.toString()

return myData1.equals(myData2);

where :
list1 - List<MyData>
list2 - List<MyData>

Comparing the String worked for me. Also NOTE I had overridden toString() method in MyData class.

'' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

This is a very common question seen on Stackoverflow.

The important part here is not the command displayed in the error, but what the actual error tells you instead.

a Quick breakdown on why this error is received.

cmd.exe Being a terminal window relies on input and system Environment variables, in order to perform what you request it to do. it does NOT know the location of everything and it also does not know when to distinguish between commands or executable names which are separated by whitespace like space and tab or commands with whitespace as switch variables.

How do I fix this:

When Actual Command/executable fails

First we make sure, is the executable actually installed? If yes, continue with the rest, if not, install it first.

If you have any executable which you are attempting to run from cmd.exe then you need to tell cmd.exe where this file is located. There are 2 ways of doing this.

  1. specify the full path to the file.

    "C:\My_Files\mycommand.exe"

  2. Add the location of the file to your environment Variables.

Goto:
------> Control Panel-> System-> Advanced System Settings->Environment Variables

In the System Variables Window, locate path and select edit

Now simply add your path to the end of the string, seperated by a semicolon ; as:

;C:\My_Files\

Save the changes and exit. You need to make sure that ANY cmd.exe windows you had open are then closed and re-opened to allow it to re-import the environment variables. Now you should be able to run mycommand.exe from any path, within cmd.exe as the environment is aware of the path to it.

When C:\Program or Similar fails

This is a very simple error. Each string after a white space is seen as a different command in cmd.exe terminal, you simply have to enclose the entire path in double quotes in order for cmd.exe to see it as a single string, and not separate commands.

So to execute C:\Program Files\My-App\Mobile.exe simply run as:

"C:\Program Files\My-App\Mobile.exe"

Calculate difference between two datetimes in MySQL

my two cents about logic:

syntax is "old date" - :"new date", so:

SELECT TIMESTAMPDIFF(SECOND, '2018-11-15 15:00:00', '2018-11-15 15:00:30')

gives 30,

SELECT TIMESTAMPDIFF(SECOND, '2018-11-15 15:00:55', '2018-11-15 15:00:15')

gives: -40

What is the best way to update the entity in JPA

Using executeUpdate() on the Query API is faster because it bypasses the persistent context .However , by-passing persistent context would cause the state of instance in the memory and the actual values of that record in the DB are not synchronized.

Consider the following example :

 Employee employee= (Employee)entityManager.find(Employee.class , 1);
 entityManager
     .createQuery("update Employee set name = \'xxxx\' where id=1")
     .executeUpdate();

After flushing, the name in the DB is updated to the new value but the employee instance in the memory still keeps the original value .You have to call entityManager.refresh(employee) to reload the updated name from the DB to the employee instance.It sounds strange if your codes still have to manipulate the employee instance after flushing but you forget to refresh() the employee instance as the employee instance still contains the original values.

Normally , executeUpdate() is used in the bulk update process as it is faster due to bypassing the persistent context

The right way to update an entity is that you just set the properties you want to updated through the setters and let the JPA to generate the update SQL for you during flushing instead of writing it manually.

   Employee employee= (Employee)entityManager.find(Employee.class ,1);
   employee.setName("Updated Name");

You could use the android.text.StaticLayout class to specify the bounds required and then call getHeight(). You can draw the text (contained in the layout) by calling its draw(Canvas) method.

Display animated GIF in iOS

If you are targeting iOS7 and already have the image split into frames you can use animatedImageNamed:duration:.

Let's say you are animating a spinner. Copy all of your frames into the project and name them as follows:

  • spinner-1.png
  • spinner-2.png
  • spinner-3.png
  • etc.,

Then create the image via:

[UIImage animatedImageNamed:@"spinner-" duration:1.0f];

From the docs:

This method loads a series of files by appending a series of numbers to the base file name provided in the name parameter. For example, if the name parameter had ‘image’ as its contents, this method would attempt to load images from files with the names ‘image0’, ‘image1’ and so on all the way up to ‘image1024’. All images included in the animated image should share the same size and scale.

How to convert the system date format to dd/mm/yy in SQL Server 2008 R2?

javax.xml.bind.UnmarshalException: unexpected element. Expected elements are (none)

When you generate a JAXB model from an XML Schema, global elements that correspond to named complex types will have that metadata captured as an @XmlElementDecl annotation on a create method in the ObjectFactory class. Since you are creating the JAXBContext on just the DocumentType class this metadata isn't being processed. If you generated your JAXB model from an XML Schema then you should create the JAXBContext on the generated package name or ObjectFactory class to ensure all the necessary metadata is processed.

Example solution:

JAXBContext jaxbContext = JAXBContext.newInstance(my.generatedschema.dir.ObjectFactory.class);
DocumentType documentType = ((JAXBElement<DocumentType>) jaxbContext.createUnmarshaller().unmarshal(inputStream)).getValue();

Should I call Close() or Dispose() for stream objects?

The documentation says that these two methods are equivalent:

StreamReader.Close: This implementation of Close calls the Dispose method passing a true value.

StreamWriter.Close: This implementation of Close calls the Dispose method passing a true value.

Stream.Close: This method calls Dispose, specifying true to release all resources.

So, both of these are equally valid:

/* Option 1, implicitly calling Dispose */
using (StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(filename)) {
   // do something
}

/* Option 2, explicitly calling Close */
StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(filename)
try {
    // do something
}
finally {
    writer.Close();
}

Personally, I would stick with the first option, since it contains less "noise".

Effect of using sys.path.insert(0, path) and sys.path(append) when loading modules

I'm quite a beginner in Python and I found the answer of Anand was very good but quite complicated to me, so I try to reformulate :

1) insert and append methods are not specific to sys.path and as in other languages they add an item into a list or array and :
* append(item) add item to the end of the list,
* insert(n, item) inserts the item at the nth position in the list (0 at the beginning, 1 after the first element, etc ...).

2) As Anand said, python search the import files in each directory of the path in the order of the path, so :
* If you have no file name collisions, the order of the path has no impact,
* If you look after a function already defined in the path and you use append to add your path, you will not get your function but the predefined one.

But I think that it is better to use append and not insert to not overload the standard behaviour of Python, and use non-ambiguous names for your files and methods.

Install-Module : The term 'Install-Module' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet

Actually my solution to this problem was much simpler, because I already had the latest version of PowerShell and is still didn't recognize Install-Module command. What fixed the "issue" for me was just typing the command manually, since originally I tried copying the snippet from a website and apparently there was some issue with the formatting when copy&pasting, so when I typed the command manually it installed the module without any problem.

Regular cast vs. static_cast vs. dynamic_cast

Static cast

The static cast performs conversions between compatible types. It is similar to the C-style cast, but is more restrictive. For example, the C-style cast would allow an integer pointer to point to a char.
char c = 10;       // 1 byte
int *p = (int*)&c; // 4 bytes

Since this results in a 4-byte pointer pointing to 1 byte of allocated memory, writing to this pointer will either cause a run-time error or will overwrite some adjacent memory.

*p = 5; // run-time error: stack corruption

In contrast to the C-style cast, the static cast will allow the compiler to check that the pointer and pointee data types are compatible, which allows the programmer to catch this incorrect pointer assignment during compilation.

int *q = static_cast<int*>(&c); // compile-time error

Reinterpret cast

To force the pointer conversion, in the same way as the C-style cast does in the background, the reinterpret cast would be used instead.

int *r = reinterpret_cast<int*>(&c); // forced conversion

This cast handles conversions between certain unrelated types, such as from one pointer type to another incompatible pointer type. It will simply perform a binary copy of the data without altering the underlying bit pattern. Note that the result of such a low-level operation is system-specific and therefore not portable. It should be used with caution if it cannot be avoided altogether.

Dynamic cast

This one is only used to convert object pointers and object references into other pointer or reference types in the inheritance hierarchy. It is the only cast that makes sure that the object pointed to can be converted, by performing a run-time check that the pointer refers to a complete object of the destination type. For this run-time check to be possible the object must be polymorphic. That is, the class must define or inherit at least one virtual function. This is because the compiler will only generate the needed run-time type information for such objects.

Dynamic cast examples

In the example below, a MyChild pointer is converted into a MyBase pointer using a dynamic cast. This derived-to-base conversion succeeds, because the Child object includes a complete Base object.

class MyBase
{
  public:
  virtual void test() {}
};
class MyChild : public MyBase {};

int main()
{
  MyChild *child = new MyChild();
  MyBase  *base = dynamic_cast<MyBase*>(child); // ok
}

The next example attempts to convert a MyBase pointer to a MyChild pointer. Since the Base object does not contain a complete Child object this pointer conversion will fail. To indicate this, the dynamic cast returns a null pointer. This gives a convenient way to check whether or not a conversion has succeeded during run-time.

MyBase  *base = new MyBase();
MyChild *child = dynamic_cast<MyChild*>(base);

if (child == 0)
std::cout << "Null pointer returned";

If a reference is converted instead of a pointer, the dynamic cast will then fail by throwing a bad_cast exception. This needs to be handled using a try-catch statement.

#include <exception>
// …
try
{
  MyChild &child = dynamic_cast<MyChild&>(*base);
}
catch(std::bad_cast &e)
{
  std::cout << e.what(); // bad dynamic_cast
}

Dynamic or static cast

The advantage of using a dynamic cast is that it allows the programmer to check whether or not a conversion has succeeded during run-time. The disadvantage is that there is a performance overhead associated with doing this check. For this reason using a static cast would have been preferable in the first example, because a derived-to-base conversion will never fail.

MyBase *base = static_cast<MyBase*>(child); // ok

However, in the second example the conversion may either succeed or fail. It will fail if the MyBase object contains a MyBase instance and it will succeed if it contains a MyChild instance. In some situations this may not be known until run-time. When this is the case dynamic cast is a better choice than static cast.

// Succeeds for a MyChild object
MyChild *child = dynamic_cast<MyChild*>(base);

If the base-to-derived conversion had been performed using a static cast instead of a dynamic cast the conversion would not have failed. It would have returned a pointer that referred to an incomplete object. Dereferencing such a pointer can lead to run-time errors.

// Allowed, but invalid
MyChild *child = static_cast<MyChild*>(base);

// Incomplete MyChild object dereferenced
(*child);

Const cast

This one is primarily used to add or remove the const modifier of a variable.

const int myConst = 5;
int *nonConst = const_cast<int*>(&myConst); // removes const

Although const cast allows the value of a constant to be changed, doing so is still invalid code that may cause a run-time error. This could occur for example if the constant was located in a section of read-only memory.

*nonConst = 10; // potential run-time error

Const cast is instead used mainly when there is a function that takes a non-constant pointer argument, even though it does not modify the pointee.

void print(int *p)
{
   std::cout << *p;
}

The function can then be passed a constant variable by using a const cast.

print(&myConst); // error: cannot convert
                 // const int* to int*

print(nonConst); // allowed

How to alter SQL in "Edit Top 200 Rows" in SSMS 2008

If you right click on any result of "Edit Top 200 Rows" query in SSMS you will see the option "Pane -> SQL". It then shows the SQL Query that was run, which you can edit as you wish.

In SMSS 2012 and 2008, you can use Ctrl+3 to quickly get there.

Code for a simple JavaScript countdown timer?

var count=30;

var counter=setInterval(timer, 1000); //1000 will run it every 1 second

function timer()
{
  count=count-1;
  if (count <= 0)
  {
     clearInterval(counter);
     //counter ended, do something here
     return;
  }

  //Do code for showing the number of seconds here
}

To make the code for the timer appear in a paragraph (or anywhere else on the page), just put the line:

<span id="timer"></span>

where you want the seconds to appear. Then insert the following line in your timer() function, so it looks like this:

function timer()
{
  count=count-1;
  if (count <= 0)
  {
     clearInterval(counter);
     return;
  }

 document.getElementById("timer").innerHTML=count + " secs"; // watch for spelling
}

How does strcmp() work?

This, from the masters themselves (K&R, 2nd ed., pg. 106):

// strcmp: return < 0 if s < t, 0 if s == t, > 0 if s > t
int strcmp(char *s, char *t)
{
    int i;

    for (i = 0; s[i] == t[i]; i++)
        if (s[i] == '\0')
            return 0;
    return s[i] - t[i];
}

How to iterate over a TreeMap?

Assuming type TreeMap<String,Integer> :

for(Map.Entry<String,Integer> entry : treeMap.entrySet()) {
  String key = entry.getKey();
  Integer value = entry.getValue();

  System.out.println(key + " => " + value);
}

(key and Value types can be any class of course)

How to convert String to long in Java?

It's quite simple, use Long.valueOf(String s);

For example:

String s;
long l;

Scanner sc=new Scanner(System.in);
s=sc.next();
l=Long.valueOf(s);
System.out.print(l);

You're done!!!

What is the canonical way to check for errors using the CUDA runtime API?

The C++-canonical way: Don't check for errors...use the C++ bindings which throw exceptions.

I used to be irked by this problem; and I used to have a macro-cum-wrapper-function solution just like in Talonmies and Jared's answers, but, honestly? It makes using the CUDA Runtime API even more ugly and C-like.

So I've approached this in a different and more fundamental way. For a sample of the result, here's part of the CUDA vectorAdd sample - with complete error checking of every runtime API call:

// (... prepare host-side buffers here ...)

auto current_device = cuda::device::current::get();
auto d_A = cuda::memory::device::make_unique<float[]>(current_device, numElements);
auto d_B = cuda::memory::device::make_unique<float[]>(current_device, numElements);
auto d_C = cuda::memory::device::make_unique<float[]>(current_device, numElements);

cuda::memory::copy(d_A.get(), h_A.get(), size);
cuda::memory::copy(d_B.get(), h_B.get(), size);

// (... prepare a launch configuration here... )

cuda::launch(vectorAdd, launch_config,
    d_A.get(), d_B.get(), d_C.get(), numElements
);
cuda::memory::copy(h_C.get(), d_C.get(), size);

// (... verify results here...)

Again - all potential errors are checked , and an exception if an error occurred (caveat: If the kernel caused some error after launch, it will be caught after the attempt to copy the result, not before; to ensure the kernel was successful you would need to check for error between the launch and the copy with a cuda::outstanding_error::ensure_none() command).

The code above uses my

Thin Modern-C++ wrappers for the CUDA Runtime API library (Github)

Note that the exceptions carry both a string explanation and the CUDA runtime API status code after the failing call.

A few links to how CUDA errors are automagically checked with these wrappers:

Why are the Level.FINE logging messages not showing?

Loggers only log the message, i.e. they create the log records (or logging requests). They do not publish the messages to the destinations, which is taken care of by the Handlers. Setting the level of a logger, only causes it to create log records matching that level or higher.

You might be using a ConsoleHandler (I couldn't infer where your output is System.err or a file, but I would assume that it is the former), which defaults to publishing log records of the level Level.INFO. You will have to configure this handler, to publish log records of level Level.FINER and higher, for the desired outcome.

I would recommend reading the Java Logging Overview guide, in order to understand the underlying design. The guide covers the difference between the concept of a Logger and a Handler.

Editing the handler level

1. Using the Configuration file

The java.util.logging properties file (by default, this is the logging.properties file in JRE_HOME/lib) can be modified to change the default level of the ConsoleHandler:

java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.level = FINER

2. Creating handlers at runtime

This is not recommended, for it would result in overriding the global configuration. Using this throughout your code base will result in a possibly unmanageable logger configuration.

Handler consoleHandler = new ConsoleHandler();
consoleHandler.setLevel(Level.FINER);
Logger.getAnonymousLogger().addHandler(consoleHandler);

Can I change the headers of the HTTP request sent by the browser?

ModHeader extension for Google Chrome, is also a good option. You can just set the Headers you want and just enter the URL in the browser, it will automatically take the headers from the extension when you hit the url. Only thing is, it will send headers for each and every URL you will hit so you have to disable or delete it after use.

Why does fatal error "LNK1104: cannot open file 'C:\Program.obj'" occur when I compile a C++ project in Visual Studio?

I had the same error:

fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'GTest.lib;'

This was caused by the ; at the end. If you have multiple libraries, they should be separated by empty space (spacebar), no comma or semi-colons!

So don't use ; or any anything else when listing libraries in Project properties >> Configuration Properties >> Linker >> Input

I had this issue was trying to remove a ui element inside an event reactive:

myReactives <- eventReactive(input$execute, {

    removeUI(selector = "#placeholder2")
})

I was getting this error, but not on the removeUI element line, it was in the next observer after for some reason. Taking the removeUI method out of the eventReactive and placing it somewhere else removed this error for me.

Regular Expressions and negating a whole character group

Yes its called negative lookahead. It goes like this - (?!regex here). So abc(?!def) will match abc not followed by def. So it'll match abce, abc, abck, etc.

Similarly there is positive lookahead - (?=regex here). So abc(?=def) will match abc followed by def.

There are also negative and positive lookbehind - (?<!regex here) and (?<=regex here) respectively

One point to note is that the negative lookahead is zero-width. That is, it does not count as having taken any space.

So it may look like a(?=b)c will match "abc" but it won't. It will match 'a', then the positive lookahead with 'b' but it won't move forward into the string. Then it will try to match the 'c' with 'b' which won't work. Similarly ^a(?=b)b$ will match 'ab' and not 'abb' because the lookarounds are zero-width (in most regex implementations).

Python dictionary: Get list of values for list of keys

Pandas does this very elegantly, though ofc list comprehensions will always be more technically Pythonic. I don't have time to put in a speed comparison right now (I'll come back later and put it in):

import pandas as pd
mydict = {'one': 1, 'two': 2, 'three': 3}
mykeys = ['three', 'one']
temp_df = pd.DataFrame().append(mydict)
# You can export DataFrames to a number of formats, using a list here.
temp_df[mykeys].values[0]
# Returns: array([ 3.,  1.])

# If you want a dict then use this instead:
# temp_df[mykeys].to_dict(orient='records')[0]
# Returns: {'one': 1.0, 'three': 3.0}

How to run a cronjob every X minutes?

If you want to run a cron every n minutes, there are a few possible options depending on the value of n.

n divides 60 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30)

Here, the solution is straightforward by making use of the / notation:

# Example of job definition:
# .---------------- minute (0 - 59)
# |  .------------- hour (0 - 23)
# |  |  .---------- day of month (1 - 31)
# |  |  |  .------- month (1 - 12) OR jan,feb,mar,apr ...
# |  |  |  |  .---- day of week (0 - 6) (Sunday=0 or 7)
# |  |  |  |  |
# *  *  *  *  *   command to be executed
m-59/n  *  *  *  *   command

In the above, n represents the value n and m represents a value smaller than n or *. This will execute the command at the minutes m,m+n,m+2n,...

n does NOT divide 60

If n does not divide 60, you cannot do this cleanly with cron but it is possible. To do this you need to put a test in the cron where the test checks the time. This is best done when looking at the UNIX timestamp, the total seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. Let's say we want to start to run the command the first time when Marty McFly arrived in Riverdale and then repeat it every n minutes later.

% date -d '2015-10-21 07:28:00' +%s
1445412480

For a cronjob to run every 42nd minute after `2015-10-21 07:28:00', the crontab would look like this:

# Example of job definition:
# .---------------- minute (0 - 59)
# |  .------------- hour (0 - 23)
# |  |  .---------- day of month (1 - 31)
# |  |  |  .------- month (1 - 12) OR jan,feb,mar,apr ...
# |  |  |  |  .---- day of week (0 - 6) (Sunday=0 or 7)
# |  |  |  |  |
# *  *  *  *  *   command to be executed
  *  *  *  *  *   minutetestcmd "2015-10-21 07:28:00" 42 && command

with minutetestcmd defined as

#!/usr/bin/env bash
starttime=$(date -d "$1" "+%s")
# return UTC time
now=$(date "+%s")
# get the amount of minutes (using integer division to avoid lag)
minutes=$(( (now - starttime) / 60 ))
# set the modulo
modulo=$2
# do the test
(( now >= starttime )) && (( minutes % modulo == 0 ))

Remark: UNIX time is not influenced by leap seconds

Remark: cron has no sub-second accuracy

I was having a similar issue with a property being null or undefined.

This ended up being that IE's document mode was being defaulted to IE7 Standards. This was due to the compatibility mode being automatically set to be used for all intranet sites (Tools > Compatibility View Setting > Display Intranet Sites in Compatibility View).

How to block users from closing a window in Javascript?

What will you do when a user hits ALT + F4 or closes it from Task Manager

Why don't you keep track if they did not complete it in a cookie or the DB and when they visit next time just bring the same screen back...:BTW..you haven't finished filling this form out..."

Of course if you were around before the dotcom bust you would remember porn storms, where if you closed 1 window 15 others would open..so yes there is code that will detect a window closing but if you hit ALT + F4 twice it will close the child and the parent (if it was a popup)

Understanding the main method of python

Python does not have a defined entry point like Java, C, C++, etc. Rather it simply executes a source file line-by-line. The if statement allows you to create a main function which will be executed if your file is loaded as the "Main" module rather than as a library in another module.

To be clear, this means that the Python interpreter starts at the first line of a file and executes it. Executing lines like class Foobar: and def foobar() creates either a class or a function and stores them in memory for later use.

Best practice when adding whitespace in JSX

I have been trying to think of a good convention to use when placing text next to components on different lines, and found a couple good options:

<p>
    Hello {
        <span>World</span>
    }!
</p>

or

<p>
    Hello {}
    <span>World</span>
    {} again!
</p>

Each of these produces clean html without additional &nbsp; or other extraneous markup. It creates fewer text nodes than using {' '}, and allows using of html entities where {' hello &amp; goodbye '} does not.

how to select rows based on distinct values of A COLUMN only

Try this - you need a CTE (Common Table Expression) that partitions (groups) your data by distinct e-mail address, and sorts each group by ID - smallest first. Then you just select the first entry for each group - that should give you what you're looking for:

;WITH DistinctMails AS
(
    SELECT ID, MailID, EMailAddress, NAME,
        ROW_NUMBER() OVER(PARTITION BY EMailAddress ORDER BY ID) AS 'RowNum'
    FROM dbo.YourMailTable
)
SELECT *
FROM DistinctMails
WHERE RowNum = 1

This works on SQL Server 2005 and newer (you didn't mention what version you're using...)

How to convert the following json string to java object?

No need to go with GSON for this; Jackson can do either plain Maps/Lists:

ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper();
Map<String,Object> map = mapper.readValue(json, Map.class);

or more convenient JSON Tree:

JsonNode rootNode = mapper.readTree(json);

By the way, there is no reason why you could not actually create Java classes and do it (IMO) more conveniently:

public class Library {
  @JsonProperty("libraryname")
  public String name;

  @JsonProperty("mymusic")
  public List<Song> songs;
}
public class Song {
  @JsonProperty("Artist Name") public String artistName;
  @JsonProperty("Song Name") public String songName;
}

Library lib = mapper.readValue(jsonString, Library.class);

How to run a single test with Mocha?

run single test –by filename–

Actually, one can also run a single mocha test by filename (not just by „it()-string-grepping“) if you remove the glob pattern (e.g. ./test/**/*.spec.js) from your mocha.opts, respectively create a copy, without:

node_modules/.bin/mocha --opts test/mocha.single.opts test/self-test.spec.js

Here's my mocha.single.opts (it's only different in missing the aforementioned glob line)

--require ./test/common.js
--compilers js:babel-core/register
--reporter list
--recursive

Background: While you can override the various switches from the opts-File (starting with --) you can't override the glob. That link also has some explanations.

Hint: if node_modules/.bin/mocha confuses you, to use the local package mocha. You can also write just mocha, if you have it installed globally.

And if you want the comforts of package.json: Still: remove the **/*-ish glob from your mocha.opts, insert them here, for the all-testing, leave them away for the single testing:

"test": "mocha ./test/**/*.spec.js",
"test-watch": "mocha -R list -w ./test/**/*.spec.js",
"test-single": "mocha $1",
"test-single-watch": "mocha -R list -w $1",

usage:

> npm run test

respectively

> npm run test-single -- test/ES6.self-test.spec.js

(mind the --!)

How to do relative imports in Python?

explanation of nosklo's answer with examples

note: all __init__.py files are empty.

main.py
app/ ->
    __init__.py
    package_a/ ->
       __init__.py
       fun_a.py
    package_b/ ->
       __init__.py
       fun_b.py

app/package_a/fun_a.py

def print_a():
    print 'This is a function in dir package_a'

app/package_b/fun_b.py

from app.package_a.fun_a import print_a
def print_b():
    print 'This is a function in dir package_b'
    print 'going to call a function in dir package_a'
    print '-'*30
    print_a()

main.py

from app.package_b import fun_b
fun_b.print_b()

if you run $ python main.py it returns:

This is a function in dir package_b
going to call a function in dir package_a
------------------------------
This is a function in dir package_a
  • main.py does: from app.package_b import fun_b
  • fun_b.py does from app.package_a.fun_a import print_a

so file in folder package_b used file in folder package_a, which is what you want. Right??

How do I print a list of "Build Settings" in Xcode project?

UPDATE: This list is getting a little out dated (it was generated with Xcode 4.1). You should run the command suggested by dunedin15.

Extracting time from POSIXct

Many solutions have been provided, but I have not seen this one, which uses package chron:

hours = times(strftime(times, format="%T"))
plot(val~hours)

(sorry, I am not entitled to post an image, you'll have to plot it yourself)

Determine the number of rows in a range

Function ListRowCount(ByVal FirstCellName as String) as Long
    With thisworkbook.Names(FirstCellName).RefersToRange
        If isempty(.Offset(1,0).value) Then
            ListRowCount = 1
        Else
            ListRowCount = .End(xlDown).row - .row + 1
        End If
    End With
End Function

But if you are damn sure there's nothing around the list, then just thisworkbook.Names(FirstCellName).RefersToRange.CurrentRegion.rows.count

How can I change my Cygwin home folder after installation?

Cygwin 1.7.34+

For those using Cygwin 1.7.34 or higher Cygwin supports configuring how to fetch home directory, login shell, and gecos information in /etc/nsswitch.conf. This is detailed in the Cygwin User Guide section:

If you've previously created an /etc/passwd or /etc/group file you'll want to remove those and configure Cygwin using the new Windows Security model to POSIX mappings.

[[ -f /etc/passwd ]] && mv /etc/passwd /etc/passwd.bak
[[ -f /etc/group ]] && mv /etc/group /etc/group.bak

The /etc/nsswitch.conf file's db_home: setting defines how Cygwin fetches the user's home directory. The default setting for db_home: is

db_home: /home/%U

So by default, Cygwin just sets the home dir to /home/$USERNAME. You can change that though to point at any other custom path you want. The supported wildcard characters are:

  • %u The Cygwin username (that's lowercase u).
  • %U The Windows username (that's uppercase U).
  • %D Windows domain in NetBIOS style.
  • %H Windows home directory in POSIX style. Note that, for the db_home: setting, this only makes sense right after the preceeding slash, as in db_home: /%H/cygwin
  • %_ Since space and TAB characters are used to separate the schemata, a space in the filename has to be given as %_ (that's an underscore).
  • %% A per-cent character.

In place of a path, you can specify one of four named path schemata that are predefined.

  1. windows The user's home directory is set to the same directory which is used as Windows home directory, typically something along the lines of %USERPROFILE% or C:\Users\$USERNAME. Of course, the Windows directory is converted to POSIX-style by Cygwin.

  2. cygwin AD only: The user's home directory is set to the POSIX path given in the cygwinHome attribute from the cygwinUser auxiliary class. See also the section called “The cygwin schema”.

  3. unix AD only: The user's home directory is set to the POSIX path given in the unixHomeDirectory attribute from the posixAccount auxiliary class. See also the section called “The unix schema”.

  4. desc The user's home directory is set to the POSIX path given in the home="..." XML-alike setting in the user's description attribute in SAM or AD. See the section called “The desc schema” for a detailed description.

The following will make the user's home directory in Cygwin the same as is used for the Windows home directory.

db_home: windows

Cygwin 1.7.33 or earlier

For those using Cygwin 1.7.33 or earlier, update to the latest version Cygwin and remove previously used /etc/passwd and /etc/group files, then see the steps above.

Else, follow these older steps below.

Firstly, set a Windows environment variable for HOME that points to your user profile:

  1. Open System on the Control Panel
  2. On the Advanced tab click Environment Variables (toward the bottom)
  3. In the User Variables area click "New…"
  4. For Variable name enter HOME
  5. For Variable value enter %USERPROFILE%
  6. Click OK in all the open dialog boxes to apply this new setting

Now we are going to update the Cygwin /etc/passwd file with the Windows %HOME% variable we just created. Shell logins and remote logins via ssh will rely on /etc/passwd to tell them the location of the user's $HOME path.

At the Cygwin bash command prompt type the following:

cp /etc/passwd /etc/passwd.bak
mkpasswd -l -p $(cygpath -H)  > /etc/passwd
mkpasswd -d -p $(cygpath -H)  >> /etc/passwd

The -d switch tells mkpasswd to include DOMAIN users, while -l is to only output LOCAL machine users. This is important if you're using a PC at work where the user information is obtained from a Windows Domain Controller.

Now, you can also do the same for groups, though this is not necessary unless you will be using a computer that is part of a Windows Domain. Cygwin reads group information from the Windows account databases, but you can add an /etc/group file if your machine is often disconnected from its Domain Controller.

At the Cygwin bash prompt type the following:

cp /etc/group /etc/group.bak
mkgroup -l > /etc/group
mkgroup -d >> /etc/group

Now, exit Cygwin and start it up again. You should find that your HOME path points to the same location as your Windows User Profile -- i.e. /cygdrive/c/Users/username

What is the advantage of using REST instead of non-REST HTTP?

Simply put: NONE.

Feel free to downvote, but I still think there are no real benefits over non-REST HTTP. All current answers are invalid. Arguments from the currently most voted answer:

  • Simple.
  • You can make good use of HTTP cache and proxy server to help you handle high load.
  • It helps you organize even a very complex application into simple resources.
  • It makes it easy for new clients to use your application, even if you haven't designed it specifically for them (probably, because they weren't around when you created your app).

1. Simple

With REST you need additional communication layer for your server-side and client-side scripts => it's actually more complicated than use of non-REST HTTP.

2. Caching

Caching can be controlled by HTTP headers sent by server. REST does not add any features missing in non-REST.

3. Organization

REST does not help you organize things. It forces you to use API supported by server-side library you are using. You can organize your application the same way (or better) when you are using non-REST approach. E.g. see Model-View-Controller or MVC routing.

4. Easy to use/implement

Not true at all. It all depends on how well you organize and document your application. REST will not magically make your application better.

Integrating CSS star rating into an HTML form

How about this? I needed the exact same thing, I had to create one from scratch. It's PURE CSS, and works in IE9+ Feel-free to improve upon it.

Demo: http://www.d-k-j.com/Articles/Web_Development/Pure_CSS_5_Star_Rating_System_with_Radios/

<ul class="form">
    <li class="rating">
        <input type="radio" name="rating" value="0" checked /><span class="hide"></span>
        <input type="radio" name="rating" value="1" /><span></span>
        <input type="radio" name="rating" value="2" /><span></span>
        <input type="radio" name="rating" value="3" /><span></span>
        <input type="radio" name="rating" value="4" /><span></span>
        <input type="radio" name="rating" value="5" /><span></span>
    </li>
</ul>

CSS:

.form {
    margin:0;
}

.form li {
    list-style:none;
}

.hide {
    display:none;
}

.rating input[type="radio"] {
    position:absolute;
    filter:alpha(opacity=0);
    -moz-opacity:0;
    -khtml-opacity:0;
    opacity:0;
    cursor:pointer;
    width:17px;
}

.rating span {
    width:24px;
    height:16px;
    line-height:16px;
    padding:1px 22px 1px 0; /* 1px FireFox fix */
    background:url(stars.png) no-repeat -22px 0;
}

.rating input[type="radio"]:checked + span {
    background-position:-22px 0;
}

.rating input[type="radio"]:checked + span ~ span {
    background-position:0 0;
}

How do you use script variables in psql?

Variables in psql suck. If you want to declare an integer, you have to enter the integer, then do a carriage return, then end the statement in a semicolon. Observe:

Let's say I want to declare an integer variable my_var and insert it into a table test:

Example table test:

thedatabase=# \d test;
                         Table "public.test"
 Column |  Type   |                     Modifiers
--------+---------+---------------------------------------------------
 id | integer | not null default nextval('test_id_seq'::regclass)
Indexes:
    "test_pkey" PRIMARY KEY, btree (id)

Clearly, nothing in this table yet:

thedatabase=# select * from test;
 id
----
(0 rows)

We declare a variable. Notice how the semicolon is on the next line!

thedatabase=# \set my_var 999
thedatabase=# ;

Now we can insert. We have to use this weird ":''" looking syntax:

thedatabase=# insert into test(id) values (:'my_var');
INSERT 0 1

It worked!

thedatabase=# select * from test;
 id
-----
 999
(1 row)

Explanation:

So... what happens if we don't have the semicolon on the next line? The variable? Have a look:

We declare my_var without the new line.

thedatabase=# \set my_var 999;

Let's select my_var.

thedatabase=# select :'my_var';
 ?column?
----------
 999;
(1 row)

WTF is that? It's not an integer, it's a string 999;!

thedatabase=# select 999;
 ?column?
----------
      999
(1 row)

You need to use the Scatter chart type instead of Line. That will allow you to define separate X values for each series.

Change the background color of a row in a JTable

This is basically as simple as repainting the table. I haven't found a way to selectively repaint just one row/column/cell however.

In this example, clicking on the button changes the background color for a row and then calls repaint.

public class TableTest {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        JFrame frame = new JFrame();
        frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);

        final Color[] rowColors = new Color[] {
                randomColor(), randomColor(), randomColor()
        };
        final JTable table = new JTable(3, 3);
        table.setDefaultRenderer(Object.class, new TableCellRenderer() {
            @Override
            public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table,
                    Object value, boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus,
                    int row, int column) {
                JPanel pane = new JPanel();
                pane.setBackground(rowColors[row]);
                return pane;
            }
        });
        frame.setLayout(new BorderLayout());

        JButton btn = new JButton("Change row2's color");
        btn.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                rowColors[1] = randomColor();
                table.repaint();
            }
        });

        frame.add(table, BorderLayout.NORTH);
        frame.add(btn, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
        frame.pack();
        frame.setVisible(true);
    }

    private static Color randomColor() {
        Random rnd = new Random();
        return new Color(rnd.nextInt(256),
                rnd.nextInt(256), rnd.nextInt(256));
    }
}

In the shell, what does " 2>&1 " mean?

I found this very helpful if you are a beginner read this

Update:
In Linux or Unix System there are two places programs send output to: Standard output (stdout) and Standard Error (stderr).You can redirect these output to any file.

Like if you do this

ls -a > output.txt

Nothing will be printed in console all output (stdout) is redirected to output file.

And if you try print the content of any file that does not exits means output will be an error like if you print test.txt that not present in current directory

cat test.txt > error.txt

Output will be

cat: test.txt :No such file or directory

But error.txt file will be empty because we redirecting the stdout to a file not stderr.

so we need file descriptor( A file descriptor is nothing more that a positive integer that represents an open file. You can say descriptor is unique id of file) to tell shell which type of output we are sending to file .In Unix /Linux system 1 is for stdout and 2 for stderr.

so now if you do this

ls -a 1> output.txt means you are sending Standard output (stdout) to output.txt.

and if you do this

cat test.txt 2> error.txt means you are sending Standard Error (stderr) to error.txt .

&1 is used to reference the value of the file descriptor 1 (stdout).

Now to the point 2>&1 means “Redirect the stderr to the same place we are redirecting the stdout”

Now you can do this

cat maybefile.txt > output.txt 2>&1

both Standard output (stdout) and Standard Error (stderr) will redirected to output.txt.

Thanks to Ondrej K. for pointing out

Is there a limit on number of tcp/ip connections between machines on linux?

When looking for the max performance you run into a lot of issue and potential bottlenecks. Running a simple hello world test is not necessarily going to find them all.

Possible limitations include:

  • Kernel socket limitations: look in /proc/sys/net for lots of kernel tuning..
  • process limits: check out ulimit as others have stated here
  • as your application grows in complexity, it may not have enough CPU power to keep up with the number of connections coming in. Use top to see if your CPU is maxed
  • number of threads? I'm not experienced with threading, but this may come into play in conjunction with the previous items.

One more solution is to use contains which will return true or false

_.contains($(".right-tree").css("background-image"), "stage1")

Hope this helps

window.history.pushState refreshing the browser

window.history.pushState({urlPath:'/page1'},"",'/page1')

Only works after page is loaded, and when you will click on refresh it doesn't mean that there is any real URL.

What you should do here is knowing to which URL you are getting redirected when you reload this page. And on that page you can get the conditions by getting the current URL and making all of your conditions.

ERROR 1115 (42000): Unknown character set: 'utf8mb4'

As some suggested here, replacing utf8mb4 with utf8 will help you resolve the issue. IMHO, I used sed to find and replace them to avoid losing data. In addition, opening a large file into any graphical editor is potential pain. My MySQL data grows up 2 GB. The ultimate command is

sed 's/utf8mb4_unicode_520_ci/utf8_unicode_ci/g' original-mysql-data.sql > updated-mysql-data.sql
sed 's/utf8mb4/utf8/g' original-mysql-data.sql > updated-mysql-data.sql

Done!

Close Bootstrap modal on form submit

I had the same problem and finally got it working with this code:

<%=form_with id: :friend_email_form, url: friend_emails_create_path do |f|%>

                      # form fields entered here

<div class="actions">
    <%= f.submit "Send Email", class: 'btn btn-primary', "onclick":"submit_form();", "data-dismiss":"modal"%>
</div>

 <script>
    function submit_form() {
      document.getElementById('friend_email_form').submit();
    }
</script>

The selected answer did not work for me.

HorizontalScrollView within ScrollView Touch Handling

I think I found a simpler solution, only this uses a subclass of ViewPager instead of (its parent) ScrollView.

UPDATE 2013-07-16: I added an override for onTouchEvent as well. It could possibly help with the issues mentioned in the comments, although YMMV.

public class UninterceptableViewPager extends ViewPager {

    public UninterceptableViewPager(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) {
        super(context, attrs);
    }

    @Override
    public boolean onInterceptTouchEvent(MotionEvent ev) {
        boolean ret = super.onInterceptTouchEvent(ev);
        if (ret)
            getParent().requestDisallowInterceptTouchEvent(true);
        return ret;
    }

    @Override
    public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent ev) {
        boolean ret = super.onTouchEvent(ev);
        if (ret)
            getParent().requestDisallowInterceptTouchEvent(true);
        return ret;
    }
}

This is similar to the technique used in android.widget.Gallery's onScroll(). It is further explained by the Google I/O 2013 presentation Writing Custom Views for Android.

Update 2013-12-10: A similar approach is also described in a post from Kirill Grouchnikov about the (then) Android Market app.

setTimeout in for-loop does not print consecutive values

You could use bind method

for (var i = 1, j = 1; i <= 3; i++, j++) {
    setTimeout(function() {
        alert(this);
    }.bind(i), j * 100);
}

Exception: Unexpected end of ZLIB input stream

You have to call close() on the GZIPOutputStream before you attempt to read it. The final bytes of the file will only be written when the file is actually closed. (This is irrespective of any explicit buffering in the output stack. The stream only knows to compress and write the last bytes when you tell it to close. A flush() probably won't help ... though calling finish() instead of close() should work. Look at the javadocs.)

Here's the correct code (in Java);

package test;

import java.io.FileInputStream;
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
import java.io.FileOutputStream;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.zip.GZIPInputStream;
import java.util.zip.GZIPOutputStream;

public class GZipTest {

    public static void main(String[] args) throws
                FileNotFoundException, IOException {
        String name = "/tmp/test";
        GZIPOutputStream gz = new GZIPOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(name));
        gz.write(10);
        gz.close(); // Remove this to reproduce the reported bug
        System.out.println(new GZIPInputStream(new FileInputStream(name)).read());
    }

How do I allow HTTPS for Apache on localhost?

This HowTo for CentOS was easy to follow and only took about 5 minutes: https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Https

I won't detail each step here, but the main steps are:

1.) Install the openssl module for apache, if not already installed

2.) Generate a self-signed certificate

--At this point, you should be able to visit https://localhost successfully

3.) Set up a virtual host if needed

Counting the number of elements with the values of x in a vector

print(length(which(numbers==435)))

#Sum counts number of TRUE's in a vector
print(sum(numbers==435))
print(sum(c(TRUE, FALSE, TRUE)))

#count is present in plyr library
#o/p of count is a DataFrame, freq is 1 of the columns of data frame
print(count(numbers[numbers==435]))
print(count(numbers[numbers==435])[['freq']])

Rendering raw html with reactjs

dangerouslySetInnerHTML is React’s replacement for using innerHTML in the browser DOM. In general, setting HTML from code is risky because it’s easy to inadvertently expose your users to a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack.

It is better/safer to sanitise your raw HTML (using e.g., DOMPurify) before injecting it into the DOM via dangerouslySetInnerHTML.

DOMPurify - a DOM-only, super-fast, uber-tolerant XSS sanitizer for HTML, MathML and SVG. DOMPurify works with a secure default, but offers a lot of configurability and hooks.

Example:

import React from 'react'
import createDOMPurify from 'dompurify'
import { JSDOM } from 'jsdom'

const window = (new JSDOM('')).window
const DOMPurify = createDOMPurify(window)

const rawHTML = `
<div class="dropdown">
  <button class="btn btn-default dropdown-toggle" type="button" id="dropdownMenu1" data-toggle="dropdown" aria-expanded="true">
    Dropdown
    <span class="caret"></span>
  </button>
  <ul class="dropdown-menu" role="menu" aria-labelledby="dropdownMenu1">
    <li role="presentation"><a role="menuitem" tabindex="-1" href="#">Action</a></li>
    <li role="presentation"><a role="menuitem" tabindex="-1" href="#">Another action</a></li>
    <li role="presentation"><a role="menuitem" tabindex="-1" href="#">Something else here</a></li>
    <li role="presentation"><a role="menuitem" tabindex="-1" href="#">Separated link</a></li>
  </ul>
</div>
`

const YourComponent = () => (
  <div>
    { <div dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: DOMPurify.sanitize(rawHTML) }} /> }
  </div>
)

export default YourComponent

Make Axios send cookies in its requests automatically

You are getting the two thinks mixed.

You have "react-cookie" and "axios"

react-cookie => is for handling the cookie on the client side

axios => is for sending ajax requests to the server

With that info, if you want the cookies from the client side to be communicated in the backend side as well, you will need to connect them together.

Note from "react-cookie" Readme:

Isomorphic cookies!

To be able to access user cookies while doing server-rendering, you can use plugToRequest or setRawCookie.

If this is what you need, great.

If not, please comment so I could elaborate more.

typedef struct vs struct definitions

With the latter example you omit the struct keyword when using the structure. So everywhere in your code, you can write :

myStruct a;

instead of

struct myStruct a;

This save some typing, and might be more readable, but this is a matter of taste

Passing an array of data as an input parameter to an Oracle procedure

If the types of the parameters are all the same (varchar2 for example), you can have a package like this which will do the following:

CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE testuser.test_pkg IS

   TYPE assoc_array_varchar2_t IS TABLE OF VARCHAR2(4000) INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;

   PROCEDURE your_proc(p_parm IN assoc_array_varchar2_t);

END test_pkg;

CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY testuser.test_pkg IS

   PROCEDURE your_proc(p_parm IN assoc_array_varchar2_t) AS
   BEGIN
      FOR i IN p_parm.first .. p_parm.last
      LOOP
         dbms_output.put_line(p_parm(i));
      END LOOP;

   END;

END test_pkg;

Then, to call it you'd need to set up the array and pass it:

DECLARE
  l_array testuser.test_pkg.assoc_array_varchar2_t;
BEGIN
  l_array(0) := 'hello';
  l_array(1) := 'there';

  testuser.test_pkg.your_proc(l_array);
END;

How do I get my solution in Visual Studio back online in TFS?

Go to File > Source Control > Go Online, select the files you changed, and finish the process.

Unable to launch the IIS Express Web server, Failed to register URL, Access is denied

The ideal way to sort this out is to use the IIS Express tray icon to stop the web site that is causing the problem. To do this, click the little upward-pointing arrow in the right-hand end of the task bar and right-click the IIS Express icon. This will pop up a small window showing you the web sites that IIS Express is currently running...

IIS Express pop up

If you click on one of the items under "View Sites" you have the option to stop that site. Or, you can click the Exit item at the bottom of the window to stop all web sites.

That should enable you to debug in Visual Studio. When you start debugging again, IIS Express will automatically restart the web site, and should be able to allocate the port.

If that fails, you have to do it the dirty way. Open Windows Task Manager and kill the Microsoft.VisualStudio.Web.Host.exe*32 process, then you can run the project fine. Note that this will kill IIS Express completely, meaning that all web sites will stop, so you'll have to restart each one in VS if you want to debug any others. Try the pop-up icon method first tough as it's cleaner and safer.

Don't know if this answers your issue, but it works for me.

Update Thanks to JasonCoder (see comment below) for adding that on Win10, the process is Microsoft.VsHub.Server.HttpHost.exe

Pay attention "allowLossyConversion: false"

if you set the value to true, it will show pure text.

Media Queries - In between two widths

just wanted to leave my .scss example here, I think its kinda best practice, especially I think if you do customization its nice to set the width only once! It is not clever to apply it everywhere, you will increase the human factor exponentially.

Im looking forward for your feedback!

Numpy, multiply array with scalar

You can multiply numpy arrays by scalars and it just works.

>>> import numpy as np
>>> np.array([1, 2, 3]) * 2
array([2, 4, 6])
>>> np.array([[1, 2, 3], [4, 5, 6]]) * 2
array([[ 2,  4,  6],
       [ 8, 10, 12]])

This is also a very fast and efficient operation. With your example:

>>> a_1 = np.array([1.0, 2.0, 3.0])
>>> a_2 = np.array([[1., 2.], [3., 4.]])
>>> b = 2.0
>>> a_1 * b
array([2., 4., 6.])
>>> a_2 * b
array([[2., 4.],
       [6., 8.]])

Is there a way to perform "if" in python's lambda

You can easily raise an exception in a lambda, if that's what you really want to do.

def Raise(exception):
    raise exception
x = lambda y: 1 if y < 2 else Raise(ValueError("invalid value"))

Is this a good idea? My instinct in general is to leave the error reporting out of lambdas; let it have a value of None and raise the error in the caller. I don't think this is inherently evil, though--I consider the "y if x else z" syntax itself worse--just make sure you're not trying to stuff too much into a lambda body.

How can I mock requests and the response?

I used requests-mock for writing tests for separate module:

import requests_mock
import unittest

from module import A

class TestAPI(unittest.TestCase):

    @requests_mock.mock()
    def test_get_response(self, m):
        a = A()
        m.get('http://aurl.com', text='a response')

Hibernate openSession() vs getCurrentSession()

As explained in this forum post, 1 and 2 are related. If you set hibernate.current_session_context_class to thread and then implement something like a servlet filter that opens the session - then you can access that session anywhere else by using the SessionFactory.getCurrentSession().

SessionFactory.openSession() always opens a new session that you have to close once you are done with the operations. SessionFactory.getCurrentSession() returns a session bound to a context - you don't need to close this.

If you are using Spring or EJBs to manage transactions you can configure them to open / close sessions along with the transactions.

You should never use one session per web app - session is not a thread safe object - cannot be shared by multiple threads. You should always use "one session per request" or "one session per transaction"

    end
  end

Changing factor levels with dplyr mutate

From my understanding, the currently accepted answer only changes the order of the factor levels, not the actual labels (i.e., how the levels of the factor are called). To illustrate the difference between levels and labels, consider the following example:

Turn cyl into factor (specifying levels would not be necessary as they are coded in alphanumeric order):

    mtcars2 <- mtcars %>% mutate(cyl = factor(cyl, levels = c(4, 6, 8)))
    mtcars2$cyl[1:5]
    #[1] 6 6 4 6 8
    #Levels: 4 6 8

Change the order of levels (but not the labels itself: cyl is still the same column)

    mtcars3 <- mtcars2 %>% mutate(cyl = factor(cyl, levels = c(8, 6, 4)))
    mtcars3$cyl[1:5]
    #[1] 6 6 4 6 8
    #Levels: 8 6 4
    all(mtcars3$cyl==mtcars2$cyl)
    #[1] TRUE

Assign new labels to cyl The order of the labels was: c(8, 6, 4), hence we specify new labels as follows:

    mtcars4 <- mtcars3 %>% mutate(cyl = factor(cyl, labels = c("new_value_for_8",
                                                               "new_value_for_6",
                                                               "new_value_for_4" )))
    mtcars4$cyl[1:5]
    #[1] new_value_for_6 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_4 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_8
    #Levels: new_value_for_8 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_4

Note how this column differs from our first columns:

    all(as.character(mtcars4$cyl)!=mtcars3$cyl)
    #[1] TRUE
    #Note: TRUE here indicates that all values are unequal because I used != instead of ==
    #as.character() was required as the levels were numeric and thus not comparable to a character vector

More details:

If we were to change the levels of cyl using mtcars2 instead of mtcars3, we would need to specify the labels differently to get the same result. The order of labels for mtcars2 was: c(4, 6, 8), hence we specify new labels as follows

    #change labels of mtcars2 (order used to be: c(4, 6, 8)
    mtcars5 <- mtcars2 %>% mutate(cyl = factor(cyl, labels = c("new_value_for_4",
                                                               "new_value_for_6",
                                                               "new_value_for_8" )))

Unlike mtcars3$cyl and mtcars4$cyl, the labels of mtcars4$cyl and mtcars5$cyl are thus identical, even though their levels have a different order.

    mtcars4$cyl[1:5]
    #[1] new_value_for_6 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_4 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_8
    #Levels: new_value_for_8 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_4

    mtcars5$cyl[1:5]
    #[1] new_value_for_6 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_4 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_8
    #Levels: new_value_for_4 new_value_for_6 new_value_for_8

    all(mtcars4$cyl==mtcars5$cyl)
    #[1] TRUE

    levels(mtcars4$cyl) == levels(mtcars5$cyl)
    #1] FALSE  TRUE FALSE

Python - Dimension of Data Frame

Summary of all ways to get info on dimensions of DataFrame or Series

There are a number of ways to get information on the attributes of your DataFrame or Series.

Create Sample DataFrame and Series

df = pd.DataFrame({'a':[5, 2, np.nan], 'b':[ 9, 2, 4]})
df

     a  b
0  5.0  9
1  2.0  2
2  NaN  4

s = df['a']
s

0    5.0
1    2.0
2    NaN
Name: a, dtype: float64

shape Attribute

The shape attribute returns a two-item tuple of the number of rows and the number of columns in the DataFrame. For a Series, it returns a one-item tuple.

df.shape
(3, 2)

s.shape
(3,)

len function

To get the number of rows of a DataFrame or get the length of a Series, use the len function. An integer will be returned.

len(df)
3

len(s)
3

size attribute

To get the total number of elements in the DataFrame or Series, use the size attribute. For DataFrames, this is the product of the number of rows and the number of columns. For a Series, this will be equivalent to the len function:

df.size
6

s.size
3

ndim attribute

The ndim attribute returns the number of dimensions of your DataFrame or Series. It will always be 2 for DataFrames and 1 for Series:

df.ndim
2

s.ndim
1

The tricky count method

The count method can be used to return the number of non-missing values for each column/row of the DataFrame. This can be very confusing, because most people normally think of count as just the length of each row, which it is not. When called on a DataFrame, a Series is returned with the column names in the index and the number of non-missing values as the values.

df.count() # by default, get the count of each column

a    2
b    3
dtype: int64

df.count(axis='columns') # change direction to get count of each row

0    2
1    2
2    1
dtype: int64

For a Series, there is only one axis for computation and so it just returns a scalar:

s.count()
2

Use the info method for retrieving metadata

The info method returns the number of non-missing values and data types of each column

df.info()

<class 'pandas.core.frame.DataFrame'>
RangeIndex: 3 entries, 0 to 2
Data columns (total 2 columns):
a    2 non-null float64
b    3 non-null int64
dtypes: float64(1), int64(1)
memory usage: 128.0 bytes

Best way to use multiple SSH private keys on one client

I had run into this issue a while back, when I had two Bitbucket accounts and wanted to had to store separate SSH keys for both. This is what worked for me.

I created two separate ssh configurations as follows.

Host personal.bitbucket.org
    HostName bitbucket.org
    User git
    IdentityFile /Users/username/.ssh/personal
Host work.bitbucket.org
    HostName bitbucket.org
    User git
    IdentityFile /Users/username/.ssh/work

Now when I had to clone a repository from my work account - the command was as follows.

git clone [email protected]:teamname/project.git

I had to modify this command to:

git clone git@**work**.bitbucket.org:teamname/project.git

Similarly the clone command from my personal account had to be modified to

git clone git@personal.bitbucket.org:name/personalproject.git

Partly cherry-picking a commit with Git

If you want to specify a list of files on the command line, and get the whole thing done in a single atomic command, try:

git apply --3way <(git show -- list-of-files)

--3way: If a patch does not apply cleanly, Git will create a merge conflict so you can run git mergetool. Omitting --3way will make Git give up on patches which don't apply cleanly.

Well if you using Java 8 or older version Here is the Best solution.

Collections.sort(studentList, Comparator.comparing(Student::getCgpa).reversed().thenComparing(Student:: getFname).thenComparing(Student::getId));

In this case, it will first sort with 'getCgpa' first and for the second part it will sort with getFname and getId. Which is field into the pojo class.

Difference between RegisterStartupScript and RegisterClientScriptBlock?

Here's a simplest example from ASP.NET Community, this gave me a clear understanding on the concept....

what difference does this make?

For an example of this, here is a way to put focus on a text box on a page when the page is loaded into the browser—with Visual Basic using the RegisterStartupScript method:

Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(Me.GetType(), "Testing", _
"document.forms[0]['TextBox1'].focus();", True)

This works well because the textbox on the page is generated and placed on the page by the time the browser gets down to the bottom of the page and gets to this little bit of JavaScript.

But, if instead it was written like this (using the RegisterClientScriptBlock method):

Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Me.GetType(), "Testing", _
"document.forms[0]['TextBox1'].focus();", True)

Focus will not get to the textbox control and a JavaScript error will be generated on the page

The reason for this is that the browser will encounter the JavaScript before the text box is on the page. Therefore, the JavaScript will not be able to find a TextBox1.

Threads vs Processes in Linux

That depends on a lot of factors. Processes are more heavy-weight than threads, and have a higher startup and shutdown cost. Interprocess communication (IPC) is also harder and slower than interthread communication.

Conversely, processes are safer and more secure than threads, because each process runs in its own virtual address space. If one process crashes or has a buffer overrun, it does not affect any other process at all, whereas if a thread crashes, it takes down all of the other threads in the process, and if a thread has a buffer overrun, it opens up a security hole in all of the threads.

So, if your application's modules can run mostly independently with little communication, you should probably use processes if you can afford the startup and shutdown costs. The performance hit of IPC will be minimal, and you'll be slightly safer against bugs and security holes. If you need every bit of performance you can get or have a lot of shared data (such as complex data structures), go with threads.

How to uninstall Apache with command line

I've had this sort of problem.....

The solve: cmd / powershell run as ADMINISTRATOR! I always forget.

Notice: In powershell, you need to put .\ for example:

.\httpd -k shutdown .\httpd -k stop .\httpd -k uninstall

Result: Removing the apache2.4 service The Apache2.4 service has been removed successfully.

jQuery won't parse my JSON from AJAX query

I found in some of my implementations I had to add:

obj = new Object; obj = (data.obj);

which seemed to solve the problem. Eval or not it seemed to do exactly the same for me.

Delete all items from a c++ std::vector

If you keep pointers in container and don't want to bother with manually destroying of them, then use boost shared_ptr. Here is sample for std::vector, but you can use it for any other STL container (set, map, queue, ...)

#include <iostream>
#include <vector>
#include <boost/shared_ptr.hpp>

struct foo
{
    foo( const int i_x ) : d_x( i_x )
    {
        std::cout << "foo::foo " << d_x << std::endl;
    }

    ~foo()
    {
        std::cout << "foo::~foo " << d_x << std::endl;
    }

    int d_x;
};

typedef boost::shared_ptr< foo > smart_foo_t;

int main()
{
    std::vector< smart_foo_t > foos;
    for ( int i = 0; i < 10; ++i )
    {
        smart_foo_t f( new foo( i ) );
        foos.push_back( f );
    }

    foos.clear();

    return 0;
}

Create line after text with css

Here is how I do this: http://jsfiddle.net/Zz7Wq/2/

I use a background instead of after and use my H1 or H2 to cover the background. Not quite your method above but does work well for me.

CSS

.title-box { background: #fff url('images/bar-orange.jpg') repeat-x left; text-align: left; margin-bottom: 20px;}
.title-box h1 { color: #000; background-color: #fff; display: inline; padding: 0 50px 0 50px; }

HTML

<div class="title-box"><h1>Title can go here</h1></div>
<div class="title-box"><h1>Title can go here this one is really really long</h1></div>

'python3' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

You can also try this: Go to the path where Python is installed in your system. For me it was something like C:\Users\\Local Settings\Application Data\Programs\Python\Python37 In this folder, you'll find a python executable. Just create a duplicate and rename it to python3. Works every time.

How to mark-up phone numbers?

Using jQuery, replace all US telephone numbers on the page with the appropriate callto: or tel: schemes.

// create a hidden iframe to receive failed schemes
$('body').append('<iframe name="blackhole" style="display:none"></iframe>');

// decide which scheme to use
var scheme = (navigator.userAgent.match(/mobile/gi) ? 'tel:' : 'callto:');

// replace all on the page
$('article').each(function (i, article) {

            var a = document.createElement('a');
            a.className = 'telephone';
            a.href = scheme + portion.text.replace(/\D/g, '');
            a.textContent = portion.text;
            a.target = 'blackhole';

Yes you can change it. but in api 22 and above, using NotificationCompat.Builder and setColorized(true) :

NotificationCompat.Builder mBuilder = new NotificationCompat.Builder(context, context.getPackageName())

Streaming via RTSP or RTP in HTML5

This is an old qustion, but I had to do it myself recently and I achieved something working so (besides response like mine would save me some time): Basically use ffmpeg to change the container to HLS, most of the IPCams stream h264 and some basic type of PCM, so use something like that:

ffmpeg -v info -i rtsp://ip:port/h264.sdp -c:v copy -c:a copy -bufsize 1835k -pix_fmt yuv420p -flags -global_header -hls_time 10 -hls_list_size 6 -hls_wrap 10 -start_number 1 /var/www/html/test.m3u8

Then use video.js with HLS plugin This will play Live stream nicely There is also a jsfiddle example under second link).

Note: although this is not a native support it doesn't require anything extra on user frontend.

FormatNumber("145",2) Which will display 145.00

How do I get the Session Object in Spring?

Indeed you can access the information from the session even when the session is being destroyed on an HttpSessionLisener by doing:

public void sessionDestroyed(HttpSessionEvent hse) {
    SecurityContextImpl sci = (SecurityContextImpl) hse.getSession().getAttribute("SPRING_SECURITY_CONTEXT");
    // be sure to check is not null since for users who just get into the home page but never get authenticated it will be
    if (sci != null) {
        UserDetails cud = (UserDetails) sci.getAuthentication().getPrincipal();
        // do whatever you need here with the UserDetails
    }
 }

or you could also access the information anywhere you have the HttpSession object available like:

SecurityContextImpl sci = (SecurityContextImpl) session().getAttribute("SPRING_SECURITY_CONTEXT");

the last assuming you have something like:

HttpSession sesssion = ...; // can come from request.getSession(false);

How to get the return value from a thread in python?

Here is the version that I created of @Kindall's answer https://stackoverflow.com/a/6894023/12900787

This version makes it so that all you have to do is input your command with arguments to create the new thread.

(I have also included a couple of tests)

this was made with python 3.8

from threading import Thread
from typing import Any

#def threader(com): # my original Version (Ignore this)
#    try:
#        threader = Thread(target = com)
#        threader.start()
#    except Exception as e:
#        print(e)
#        print('Could not start thread')

def test(plug, plug2, plug3):
    print(f"hello {plug}")
    print(f'I am the second plug : {plug2}')
    print(plug3)
    return 'I am the return Value!'

def test2(msg):
    return f'I am from the second test: {msg}'

def test3():
    print('hello world')

def NewThread(com, Returning: bool, *arguments) -> Any:

Is mathematics necessary for programming?

My response is absolutely not. I was/am (now unemloyed, thanks India) a computer programmer for 25+ year. And, in my whole career I NEVER encountered program LOGIC that required more than basic math skills. Unless you work with math everyday that exceeds basic math skills, the need for advanced math is nill. At the corporate level any complex math WILL be referred to a statician or mathematicain, who will provide the programmer with the necessary pseudo code, and both will collaborate in the thorough testing of the end product. Ultimately the ball is in the math nerd's court. At any level unless you're a mathmetician/statician/senior programmer the thought of having a programmer responsible for the expected results of a complex advanced math computer program is absurd, and very foolhardy.

jQuery - Dynamically Create Button and Attach Event Handler

You were just adding the html string. Not the element you created with a click event listener.

Try This:

<html>
<head>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.2.6/jquery.min.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
    <table id="addNodeTable">
        <tr>
            <td>
                Row 1
            </td>
        </tr>
        <tr >
            <td>
                Row 2
            </td>
        </tr>
    </table>
</body>
</html>
<script type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function() {
        var test = $('<button>Test</button>').click(function () {
            alert('hi');
        });
        $("#addNodeTable tr:last").append('<tr><td></td></tr>').find("td:last").append(test);

    });
</script>

Pass parameter from a batch file to a PowerShell script

Assuming your script is something like the below snippet and named testargs.ps1

param ([string]$w)
Write-Output $w

You can call this at the commandline as:

PowerShell.Exe -File C:\scripts\testargs.ps1 "Test String"

This will print "Test String" (w/o quotes) at the console. "Test String" becomes the value of $w in the script.

How can I get a vertical scrollbar in my ListBox?

In my case the number of items in the ListBox is dynamic so I didn't want to use the Height property. I used MaxHeight instead and it works nicely. The scrollbar appears when it fills the space I've allocated for it.

Object of class mysqli_result could not be converted to string in

The query() function returns an object, you'll want fetch a record from what's returned from that function. Look at the examples on this page to learn how to print data from mysql

disable a hyperlink using jQuery

$('.my-link').click(function(e) { e.preventDefault(); });

You could use:

$('.my-link').click(function(e) { return false; });

But I don't like to use this myself as it is more cryptic, even though it is used extensively throughout much jQuery code.

find vs find_by vs where

Since Rails 4 you can do:

User.find_by(name: 'Bob')

which is the equivalent find_by_name in Rails 3.

Use #where when #find and #find_by are not enough.
