Programs & Examples On #Shuffle

Shuffling is the act of randomizing the order of the elements in a collection.

Shuffle DataFrame rows

(I don't have enough reputation to comment this on the top post, so I hope someone else can do that for me.) There was a concern raised that the first method:

df.sample(frac=1)

made a deep copy or just changed the dataframe. I ran the following code:

print(hex(id(df)))
print(hex(id(df.sample(frac=1))))
print(hex(id(df.sample(frac=1).reset_index(drop=True))))

and my results were:

0x1f8a784d400
0x1f8b9d65e10
0x1f8b9d65b70

which means the method is not returning the same object, as was suggested in the last comment. So this method does indeed make a shuffled copy.

Shuffling a list of objects

from random import random
my_list = range(10)
shuffled_list = sorted(my_list, key=lambda x: random())

This alternative may be useful for some applications where you want to swap the ordering function.

How can I shuffle the lines of a text file on the Unix command line or in a shell script?

In windows You may try this batch file to help you to shuffle your data.txt, The usage of the batch code is

C:\> type list.txt | shuffle.bat > maclist_temp.txt

After issuing this command, maclist_temp.txt will contain a randomized list of lines.

Hope this helps.

Random shuffling of an array

Here is a solution using Apache Commons Math 3.x (for int[] arrays only):

MathArrays.shuffle(array);

http://commons.apache.org/proper/commons-math/javadocs/api-3.6.1/org/apache/commons/math3/util/MathArrays.html#shuffle(int[])

Alternatively, Apache Commons Lang 3.6 introduced new shuffle methods to the ArrayUtils class (for objects and any primitive type).

ArrayUtils.shuffle(array);

http://commons.apache.org/proper/commons-lang/javadocs/api-release/org/apache/commons/lang3/ArrayUtils.html#shuffle-int:A-

What is the purpose of shuffling and sorting phase in the reducer in Map Reduce Programming?

Some of the data processing requirements doesn't need sort at all. Syncsort had made the sorting in Hadoop pluggable. Here is a nice blog from them on sorting. The process of moving the data from the mappers to the reducers is called shuffling, check this article for more information on the same.

How to randomize (shuffle) a JavaScript array?

I was thinking about oneliner to paste in console. All tricks with .sort was giving wrong results, here is my implementation:

 ['Bob', 'Amy', 'Joy'].map((person) => `${Math.random().toFixed(10)}${person}`).sort().map((person) => person.substr(12));

But don't use it in production code, it's not optimal and works with strings only.

Better way to shuffle two numpy arrays in unison

James wrote in 2015 an sklearn solution which is helpful. But he added a random state variable, which is not needed. In the below code, the random state from numpy is automatically assumed.

X = np.array([[1., 0.], [2., 1.], [0., 0.]])
y = np.array([0, 1, 2])
from sklearn.utils import shuffle
X, y = shuffle(X, y)

Shuffle an array with python, randomize array item order with python

The other answers are the easiest, however it's a bit annoying that the random.shuffle method doesn't actually return anything - it just sorts the given list. If you want to chain calls or just be able to declare a shuffled array in one line you can do:

    import random
    def my_shuffle(array):
        random.shuffle(array)
        return array

Then you can do lines like:

    for suit in my_shuffle(['hearts', 'spades', 'clubs', 'diamonds']):

What is the Java equivalent of PHP var_dump?

I think something similar you could do is to create a simple method which prints the object you want to see. Something like this:

public static void dd(Object obj) { System.out.println(obj); }

It's not the same like var_dump(), but you can get an general idea of it, without the need to go to your debugger IDE.

Convert string to datetime in vb.net

You can try with ParseExact method

Sample

Dim format As String
format = "d"
Dim provider As CultureInfo = CultureInfo.InvariantCulture
result = Date.ParseExact(DateString, format, provider)

What's the bad magic number error?

"Bad magic number" error also happens if you have manually named your file with an extension .pyc

How to set session timeout dynamically in Java web applications?

Is there a way to set the session timeout programatically

There are basically three ways to set the session timeout value:

  • by using the session-timeout in the standard web.xml file ~or~
  • in the absence of this element, by getting the server's default session-timeout value (and thus configuring it at the server level) ~or~
  • programmatically by using the HttpSession. setMaxInactiveInterval(int seconds) method in your Servlet or JSP.

But note that the later option sets the timeout value for the current session, this is not a global setting.

unable to remove file that really exists - fatal: pathspec ... did not match any files

Your file .idea/workspace.xml is not under git version control. You have either not added it yet (check git status/Untracked files) or ignored it (using .gitignore or .git/info/exclude files)

You can verify it using following git command, that lists all ignored files:

git ls-files --others -i --exclude-standard

Convert String to Type in C#

You can only use just the name of the type (with its namespace, of course) if the type is in mscorlib or the calling assembly. Otherwise, you've got to include the assembly name as well:

Type type = Type.GetType("Namespace.MyClass, MyAssembly");

If the assembly is strongly named, you've got to include all that information too. See the documentation for Type.GetType(string) for more information.

Alternatively, if you have a reference to the assembly already (e.g. through a well-known type) you can use Assembly.GetType:

Assembly asm = typeof(SomeKnownType).Assembly;
Type type = asm.GetType(namespaceQualifiedTypeName);

What are the differences between C, C# and C++ in terms of real-world applications?

For raw speed, use C. For power, use C++. For .NET compatibility, use C#.

They're all pretty complex as languages go; C through decades of gradual accretion, C++ through years of more rapid enhancement, and C# through the power of Microsoft.

Default nginx client_max_body_size

You can increase body size in nginx configuration file as

sudo nano /etc/nginx/nginx.conf

client_max_body_size 100M;

Restart nginx to apply the changes.

sudo service nginx restart

How can I edit a .jar file?

A jar file is a zip archive. You can extract it using 7zip (a great simple tool to open archives). You can also change its extension to zip and use whatever to unzip the file.

Now you have your class file. There is no easy way to edit class file, because class files are binaries (you won't find source code in there. maybe some strings, but not java code). To edit your class file you can use a tool like classeditor.

You have all the strings your class is using hard-coded in the class file. So if the only thing you would like to change is some strings you can do it without using classeditor.

UIButton action in table view cell

The accepted answer is good and simple approach but have limitation of information it can hold with tag. As sometime more information needed.

You can create a custom button and add properties as many as you like they will hold info you wanna pass:

class CustomButton: UIButton {
    var orderNo = -1
    var clientCreatedDate = Date(timeIntervalSince1970: 1)
}

Make button of this type in Storyboard or programmatically:

protocol OrderStatusDelegate: class {
    func orderStatusUpdated(orderNo: Int, createdDate: Date)
}

class OrdersCell: UITableViewCell {
    @IBOutlet weak var btnBottom: CustomButton!
    weak var delegate: OrderStatusDelegate?
}

While configuring the cell add values to these properties:

 func configureCell(order: OrderRealm, index: Int) {
     btnBottom.orderNo = Int(order.orderNo)
     btnBottom.clientCreatedDate = order.clientCreatedDate
 }

When tapped access those properties in button's action (within cell's subclass) that can be sent through delegate:

@IBAction func btnBumpTapped(_ sender: Any) {
    if let button = sender as? CustomButton {
        let orderNo = button.orderNo
        let createdDate = button.clientCreatedDate
        delegate?.orderStatusUpdated(orderNo: orderNo, createdDate: createdDate)
    }
}

PDO::__construct(): Server sent charset (255) unknown to the client. Please, report to the developers

I had the same issue to connect to local system.

I checked in the services list (Run->Services.msc->Enter) wampmysqld64 was stopped.

Restarted it. and was able to login.

How to set breakpoints in inline Javascript in Google Chrome?

This is an extension of Rian Schmits' answer above. In my case, I had HTML code embedded in my JavaScript code and I couldn't see anything other than the HTML code. Maybe Chrome Debugging has changed over the years but right-clicking the Sources/Sources tab presented me with Add folder to workspace. I was able to add my entire project, which gave me access to all of my JavaScripts. You can find more detail in this link. I hope this helps somebody.

How to upload images into MySQL database using PHP code

This is the perfect code for uploading and displaying image through MySQL database.

<html>
<body>
<form method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data">
<input type="file" name="image"/>
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Upload"/>
</form>
<?php
    if(isset($_POST['submit']))
    {
     if(getimagesize($_FILES['image']['tmp_name'])==FALSE)
     {
        echo " error ";
     }
     else

            header('location:urlofpage.php');
        }

multiprocessing: How do I share a dict among multiple processes?

In addition to @senderle's here, some might also be wondering how to use the functionality of multiprocessing.Pool.

The nice thing is that there is a .Pool() method to the manager instance that mimics all the familiar API of the top-level multiprocessing.

from itertools import repeat
import multiprocessing as mp
import os
import pprint

def f(d: dict) -> None:
    pid = os.getpid()
    d[pid] = "Hi, I was written by process %d" % pid

if __name__ == '__main__':
    with mp.Manager() as manager:
        d = manager.dict()
        with manager.Pool() as pool:
            pool.map(f, repeat(d, 10))
        # `d` is a DictProxy object that can be converted to dict
        pprint.pprint(dict(d))

Output:

$ python3 mul.py
{22562: 'Hi, I was written by process 22562',
 22563: 'Hi, I was written by process 22563',
 22564: 'Hi, I was written by process 22564',
 22565: 'Hi, I was written by process 22565',
 22566: 'Hi, I was written by process 22566',
 22567: 'Hi, I was written by process 22567',
 22568: 'Hi, I was written by process 22568',
 22569: 'Hi, I was written by process 22569',
 22570: 'Hi, I was written by process 22570',
 22571: 'Hi, I was written by process 22571'}

This is a slightly different example where each process just logs its process ID to the global DictProxy object d.

Access is denied when attaching a database

Every time I have run into this issue was when attempting to attach a database that is in a different directory from the default database directory that is setup in SQL server.

I would highly recommend that instead of jacking with permissions on various directories and accounts that you simply move your data file into the directory that sql server expects to find it.

How to select a value in dropdown javascript?

Instead of doing

function setSelectedIndex(s, v) {
    for ( var i = 0; i < s.options.length; i++ ) {
        if ( s.options[i].value == v ) {
            s.options[i].selected = true;
            return;
        }
    }
}

I solved this problem by doing this

function setSelectedValue(dropDownList, valueToSet) {
    var option = dropDownList.firstChild;
    for (var i = 0; i < dropDownList.length; i++) {
        if (option.text.trim().toLowerCase() == valueToSet.trim().toLowerCase()) {
            option.selected = true;
            return;
        }
        option = option.nextElementSibling;
    }
}

If you work with strings, you should use the .trim() method, sometimes blank spaces can cause trouble and they are hard to detect in javascript debugging sessions.

dropDownList.firstChild will actually be your first option tag. Then, by doing option.nextElementSibling you can go to the next option tag, so the next choice in your dropdownlist element. If you want to get the number of option tags you can use dropDownList.length which I used in the for loop.

Hope this helps someone.

Oracle "ORA-01008: not all variables bound" Error w/ Parameters

You might also consider removing the need for duplicated parameter names in your Sql by changing your Sql to

table.Variable2 LIKE '%' || :VarB || '%'

and then getting your client to provide '%' for any value of VarB instead of null. In some ways I think this is more natural.

You could also change the Sql to

table.Variable2 LIKE '%' || IfNull(:VarB, '%') || '%'

What does "zend_mm_heap corrupted" mean

There was a bug fixed in PHP on Nov 13, 2014:

Fixed bug #68365 (zend_mm_heap corrupted after memory overflow in zend_hash_copy).

This was updated in versions 5.4.35, 5.5.19 and 5.6.3. In my case when I changed from using Ubuntu's official trusty package (5.5.9+dfsg-1ubuntu4.14) to the 5.5.30 version packaged by Ondrej Sury, the problem went away. None of the other solutions worked for me and I didn't want to disable opcache or suppress errors since this really was causing segfaults (500 responses).

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS:

export LANG=C.UTF-8 # May not be required on your system

How to send a GET request from PHP?

Remember that if you are using a proxy you need to do a little trick in your php code:

(PROXY WITHOUT AUTENTICATION EXAMPLE)

<?php

        'proxy' => 'proxy:8080',
        'request_fulluri' => true,
    ),
);
$cxContext = stream_context_create($aContext);

$sFile = file_get_contents("http://www.google.com", False, $cxContext);

echo $sFile;

Setting the Vim background colors

Using set bg=dark with a white background can produce nearly unreadable text in some syntax highlighting schemes. Instead, you can change the overall colorscheme to something that looks good in your terminal. The colorscheme file should set the background attribute for you appropriately. what does mysql_real_escape_string() really do?

Best explained here.

http://www.w3schools.com/php/func_mysql_real_escape_string.asp

http://www.tizag.com/mysqlTutorial/mysql-php-sql-injection.php

It generally it helps to avoid SQL injection, for example consider the following code:

<?php
// Query database to check if there are any matching users
$query = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE user='{$_POST['username']}' AND password='{$_POST['password']}'";
mysql_query($query);

// We didn't check $_POST['password'], it could be anything the user wanted! For example:
$_POST['username'] = 'aidan';
$_POST['password'] = "' OR ''='";

// This means the query sent to MySQL would be:
echo $query;
?>

and a hacker can send a query like:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE user='aidan' AND password='' OR ''=''

This would allow anyone to log in without a valid password.

How can I delete derived data in Xcode 8?

How to install node.js as windows service?

The process manager + task scheduler approach I posted a year ago works well with some one-off service installations. But recently I started to design system in a micro-service fashion, with many small services talking to each other via IPC. So manually configuring each service has become unbearable.

Towards the goal of installing services without manual configuration, I created serman, a command line tool (install with npm i -g serman) to install an executable as a service. All you need to write (and only write once) is a simple service configuration file along with your executable. Run

serman install <path_to_config_file>

will install the service. stdout and stderr are all logged. For more info, take a look at the project website.

A working configuration file is very simple, as demonstrated below. But it also has many useful features such as <env> and <persistent_env> below.

<service>
  <id>hello</id>
  <name>hello</name>
  <description>This service runs the hello application</description>

  <executable>node.exe</executable>

  <!--
       {{dir}} will be expanded to the containing directory of your
       config file, which is normally where your executable locates
   -->
  <arguments>"{{dir}}\hello.js"</arguments>

  <logmode>rotate</logmode>

  <!-- OPTIONAL FEATURE:
       NODE_ENV=production will be an environment variable
       available to your application, but not visible outside
       of your application
   -->
  <env name="NODE_ENV" value="production"/>

  <!-- OPTIONAL FEATURE:
       FOO_SERVICE_PORT=8989 will be persisted as an environment
       variable machine-wide.
   -->
  <persistent_env name="FOO_SERVICE_PORT" value="8989" />
</service>

How can I find all matches to a regular expression in Python?

Use re.findall or re.finditer instead.

re.findall(pattern, string) returns a list of matching strings.

re.finditer(pattern, string) returns an iterator over MatchObject objects.

Example:

re.findall( r'all (.*?) are', 'all cats are smarter than dogs, all dogs are dumber than cats')
# Output: ['cats', 'dogs']

[x.group() for x in re.finditer( r'all (.*?) are', 'all cats are smarter than dogs, all dogs are dumber than cats')]
# Output: ['all cats are', 'all dogs are']

Display tooltip on Label's hover?

You don't have to use hidden field. Use "title" property. It will show browser default tooltip. You can then use jQuery plugin (like before mentioned bootstrap tooltip) to show custom formatted tooltip.

<label for="male" title="Hello This Will Have Some Value">Hello ...</label>

Hint: you can also use css to trim text, that does not fit into the box (text-overflow property). See http://jsfiddle.net/8eeHs/

What does elementFormDefault do in XSD?

I have noticed that XMLSpy(at least 2011 version)needs a targetNameSpace defined if elementFormDefault="qualified" is used. Otherwise won't validate. And also won't generate xmls with namespace prefixes

Replace all non Alpha Numeric characters, New Lines, and multiple White Space with one Space

Jonny 5 beat me to it. I was going to suggest using the \W+ without the \s as in text.replace(/\W+/g, " "). This covers white space as well.

No connection string named 'MyEntities' could be found in the application config file

The connection string generated by the project containing the .edmx file generates the connection string, this would appear to be a holdover from the app.config sorts of files that were copied to the output directory and referenced by the executable to store runtime config information.

This breaks in the web project as there is no automatic process to add random .config information into the web.config file for the web project.

Easiest is to copy the connection string from the config file to the connections section of the web.config file and disregard the config file contents.

Intellisense and code suggestion not working in Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate RC

Generally I face the same problem when I copy some snippets from internet with some special chars that breaks the Intellisense.

It happened a few times with me, I discovered the problem after deleting the file and creating a new one, now when I face the same problem, fist I restart the Visual Studio, if this doesn't resolve the problem, I remove the last snippet I copied from internet and do it by hand, them the problem is gone.

jquery/javascript convert date string to date

If you're running with jQuery you can use the datepicker UI library's parseDate function to convert your string to a date:

var d = $.datepicker.parseDate("DD, MM dd, yy",  "Sunday, February 28, 2010");

and then follow it up with the formatDate method to get it to the string format you want

var datestrInNewFormat = $.datepicker.formatDate( "mm/dd/yy", d);

If you're not running with jQuery of course its probably not the best plan given you'd need jQuery core as well as the datepicker UI module... best to go with the suggestion from Segfault above to use date.js.

How to terminate a thread when main program ends?

Check this question. The correct answer has great explanation on how to terminate threads the right way: Is there any way to kill a Thread in Python?

To make the thread stop on Keyboard Interrupt signal (ctrl+c) you can catch the exception "KeyboardInterrupt" and cleanup before exiting. Like this:

try:
    start_thread()
except (KeyboardInterrupt, SystemExit):
    cleanup_stop_thread()
    sys.exit()

This way you can control what to do whenever the program is abruptly terminated.

You can also use the built-in signal module that lets you setup signal handlers (in your specific case the SIGINT signal): http://docs.python.org/library/signal.html

How to check file MIME type with javascript before upload?

As stated in other answers, you can check the mime type by checking the signature of the file in the first bytes of the file.

But what other answers are doing is loading the entire file in memory in order to check the signature, which is very wasteful and could easily freeze your browser if you select a big file by accident or not.

How do you find the row count for all your tables in Postgres

I like Daniel Vérité's answer. But when you can't use a CREATE statement you can either use a bash solution or, if you're a windows user, a powershell one:

# You don't need this if you have pgpass.conf
$env:PGPASSWORD = "userpass"

# Get table list
$tables = & 'C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\9.4\bin\psql.exe' -U user -w -d dbname -At -c "select table_name from information_schema.tables where table_type='BASE TABLE' AND table_schema='schema1'"

foreach ($table in $tables) {
    & 'C:\path_to_postresql\bin\psql.exe' -U root -w -d dbname -At -c "select '$table', count(*) from $table"
}

Is Android using NTP to sync time?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with Android 4.1.1. Apparently it does NOT sync to ntp. I loaded an app that says my tablet is 20 seconds off of ntp, but it can't set it unless I root the device.

convert string to number node.js

Using parseInt() is a bad idea mainly because it never fails. Also because some results can be unexpected, like in the case of INFINITY.
Below is the function for handling unexpected behaviour.

function cleanInt(x) {
    x = Number(x);
    return x >= 0 ? Math.floor(x) : Math.ceil(x);
}

See results of below test cases.

console.log("CleanInt: ", cleanInt('xyz'), " ParseInt: ", parseInt('xyz'));
console.log("CleanInt: ", cleanInt('123abc'), " ParseInt: ", parseInt('123abc'));
console.log("CleanInt: ", cleanInt('234'), " ParseInt: ", parseInt('234'));
console.log("CleanInt: ", cleanInt('-679'), " ParseInt: ", parseInt('-679'));
console.log("CleanInt: ", cleanInt('897.0998'), " ParseInt: ", parseInt('897.0998'));
console.log("CleanInt: ", cleanInt('Infinity'), " ParseInt: ", parseInt('Infinity'));

result:

CleanInt:  NaN  ParseInt:  NaN
CleanInt:  NaN  ParseInt:  123
CleanInt:  234  ParseInt:  234
CleanInt:  -679  ParseInt:  -679
CleanInt:  897  ParseInt:  897
CleanInt:  Infinity  ParseInt:  NaN

Cannot change column used in a foreign key constraint

When you set keys (primary or foreign) you are setting constraints on how they can be used, which in turn limits what you can do with them. If you really want to alter the column, you could re-create the table without the constraints, although I'd recommend against it. Generally speaking, if you have a situation in which you want to do something, but it is blocked by a constraint, it's best resolved by changing what you want to do rather than the constraint.

Angular 4.3 - HttpClient set params

My helper class (ts) to convert any complex dto object (not only "string dictionary") to HttpParams:

import { HttpParams } from "@angular/common/http";

export class HttpHelper {
  static toHttpParams(obj: any): HttpParams {
    return this.addToHttpParams(new HttpParams(), obj, null);
  }

  private static addToHttpParams(params: HttpParams, obj: any, prefix: string): HttpParams {
    for (const p in obj) {
      if (obj.hasOwnProperty(p)) {
        var k = p;
        if (prefix) {
          if (p.match(/^-{0,1}\d+$/)) {
            k = prefix + "[" + p + "]";
          } else {
            k = prefix + "." + p;
          }
        }
        var v = obj[p];
        if (v !== null && typeof v === "object" && !(v instanceof Date)) {
          params = this.addToHttpParams(params, v, k);
        } else if (v !== undefined) {
          if (v instanceof Date) {
            params = params.set(k, (v as Date).toISOString()); //serialize date as you want
          }
          else {
            params = params.set(k, v);
          }

        }
      }
    }
    return params;
  }
}

console.info(
  HttpHelper.toHttpParams({
    id: 10,
    date: new Date(),
    states: [1, 3],
    child: {
      code: "111"
    }
  }).toString()
); // id=10&date=2019-08-02T13:19:09.014Z&states%5B0%5D=1&states%5B1%5D=3&child.code=111

Convert from days to milliseconds

The best practice for this, in my opinion is:

TimeUnit.DAYS.toMillis(1);     // 1 day to milliseconds.
TimeUnit.MINUTES.toMillis(23); // 23 minutes to milliseconds.
TimeUnit.HOURS.toMillis(4);    // 4 hours to milliseconds.
TimeUnit.SECONDS.toMillis(96); // 96 seconds to milliseconds.

Equal height rows in CSS Grid Layout

Short Answer

If the goal is to create a grid with equal height rows, where the tallest cell in the grid sets the height for all rows, here's a quick and simple solution:

  • Set the container to grid-auto-rows: 1fr

How it works

Grid Layout provides a unit for establishing flexible lengths in a grid container. This is the fr unit. It is designed to distribute free space in the container and is somewhat analogous to the flex-grow property in flexbox.

If you set all rows in a grid container to 1fr, let's say like this:

grid-auto-rows: 1fr;

... then all rows will be equal height.

It doesn't really make sense off-the-bat because fr is supposed to distribute free space. And if several rows have content with different heights, then when the space is distributed, some rows would be proportionally smaller and taller.

Except, buried deep in the grid spec is this little nugget:

7.2.3. Flexible Lengths: the fr unit

...

When the available space is infinite (which happens when the grid container’s width or height is indefinite), flex-sized (fr) grid tracks are sized to their contents while retaining their respective proportions.

The used size of each flex-sized grid track is computed by determining the max-content size of each flex-sized grid track and dividing that size by the respective flex factor to determine a “hypothetical 1fr size”.

The maximum of those is used as the resolved 1fr length (the flex fraction), which is then multiplied by each grid track’s flex factor to determine its final size.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, when dealing with a dynamically-sized grid (e.g., the height is indefinite), grid tracks (rows, in this case) are sized to their contents.

The height of each row is determined by the tallest (max-content) grid item.

The maximum height of those rows becomes the length of 1fr.

That's how 1fr creates equal height rows in a grid container.

Why flexbox isn't an option

As noted in the question, equal height rows are not possible with flexbox.

Flex items can be equal height on the same row, but not across multiple rows.

This behavior is defined in the flexbox spec:

6. Flex Lines

In a multi-line flex container, the cross size of each line is the minimum size necessary to contain the flex items on the line.

In other words, when there are multiple lines in a row-based flex container, the height of each line (the "cross size") is the minimum height necessary to contain the flex items on the line.

Is it possible to cast a Stream in Java 8?

Along the lines of ggovan's answer, I do this as follows:

/**
 * Provides various high-order functions.
 */
public final class F {
    /**
     * When the returned {@code Function} is passed as an argument to
     * {@link Stream#flatMap}, the result is a stream of instances of
     * {@code cls}.
     */
    public static <E> Function<Object, Stream<E>> instancesOf(Class<E> cls) {
        return o -> cls.isInstance(o)
                ? Stream.of(cls.cast(o))
                : Stream.empty();
    }
}

Using this helper function:

Stream.of(objects).flatMap(F.instancesOf(Client.class))
        .map(Client::getId)
        .forEach(System.out::println);

Bash: Strip trailing linebreak from output

If your expected output is a single line, you can simply remove all newline characters from the output. It would not be uncommon to pipe to the tr utility, or to Perl if preferred:

wc -l < log.txt | tr -d '\n'

wc -l < log.txt | perl -pe 'chomp'

You can also use command substitution to remove the trailing newline:

echo -n "$(wc -l < log.txt)"

printf "%s" "$(wc -l < log.txt)"

If your expected output may contain multiple lines, you have another decision to make:

If you want to remove MULTIPLE newline characters from the end of the file, again use cmd substitution:

printf "%s" "$(< log.txt)"

If you want to strictly remove THE LAST newline character from a file, use Perl:

perl -pe 'chomp if eof' log.txt

Note that if you are certain you have a trailing newline character you want to remove, you can use head from GNU coreutils to select everything except the last byte. This should be quite quick:

head -c -1 log.txt

Also, for completeness, you can quickly check where your newline (or other special) characters are in your file using cat and the 'show-all' flag -A. The dollar sign character will indicate the end of each line:

cat -A log.txt

How do I remove packages installed with Python's easy_install?

Came across this question, while trying to uninstall the many random Python packages installed over time.

Using information from this thread, this is what I came up with:

cat package_list | xargs -n1 sudo pip uninstall -y

The package_list is cleaned up (awk) from a pip freeze in a virtualenv.

To remove almost all Python packages:

yolk -l | cut -f 1 -d " " | grep -v "setuptools|pip|ETC.." | xargs -n1 pip uninstall -y

How to use DbContext.Database.SqlQuery<TElement>(sql, params) with stored procedure? EF Code First CTP5

This solution is (only) for SQL Server 2005

You guys are lifesavers, but as @Dan Mork said, you need to add EXEC to the mix. What was tripping me up was:

  • 'EXEC ' before the Proc Name
  • Commas in between Params
  • Chopping off '@' on the Param Definitions (not sure that bit is required though).

:

context.Database.SqlQuery<EntityType>(
    "EXEC ProcName @param1, @param2",

    new SqlParameter("param2", param2)
);

when I try to open an HTML file through `http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/index.html` it says unable to connect to localhost

htdocs is your default document-root directory, so you have to use localhost/index.html to see that html file. In other words, localhost is mapped to xampp/htdocs, so index.html is at localhost itself. You can change the location of document root by modifying httpd.conf and restarting the server.

Try replacing this

var query = context.Search(id, searchText);

with

var query = context.Search(id, searchText).tolist();

and everything will work well.

As suggested by Mark Ransom, I found the right encoding for that problem. The encoding was "ISO-8859-1", so replacing open("u.item", encoding="utf-8") with open('u.item', encoding = "ISO-8859-1") will solve the problem.

How to change line color in EditText

The background of widgets are API level dependent.

ALTERNATIVE 1

You can provide a custom image to your EditText background by

android:background="@drawable/custom_editText"

Your image should look something like this. It will give you the desired effect.

enter image description here

ALTERNATIVE 2

Set this xml to your EditText background attribute.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
 android:shape="rectangle" android:padding="10dp">
<solid android:color="#4C000000"/>
    <corners android:bottomRightRadius="5dp"
             android:bottomLeftRadius="5dp"
             android:topLeftRadius="5dp"
             android:topRightRadius="5dp"/>
</shape>

This will have the same look and feel of your EditText on every API.

In HTML I can make a checkmark with &#x2713; . Is there a corresponding X-mark?

Personally, I like to use named entities when they are available, because they make my HTML more readable. Because of that, I like to use &check; for ✓ and &cross; for ✗. If you're not sure whether a named entity exists for the character you want, try the &what search site. It includes the name for each entity, if there is one.

As mentioned in the comments, &check; and &cross; are not supported in HTML4, so you may be better off using the more cryptic &#x2713; and &#x2717; if you want to target the most browsers. The most definitive references I could find were on the W3C site: HTML4 and HTML5.

Is it possible to see more than 65536 rows in Excel 2007?

Here is an interesting blog entry about numbers / limitations of Excel 2007. According to the author the new limit is approximately one million rows.

Sounds like you have a pre-Excel 2007 workbook open in Excel 2007 in compatibility mode (look in the title bar and see if it says compatibility mode). If so, the workbook has 65,536 rows, not 1,048,576. You can save the workbook as an Excel workbook which will be in Excel 2007 format, close the workbook and re-open it.

Understanding __getitem__ method

Cong Ma does a good job of explaining what __getitem__ is used for - but I want to give you an example which might be useful. Imagine a class which models a building. Within the data for the building it includes a number of attributes, including descriptions of the companies that occupy each floor :

Without using __getitem__ we would have a class like this :

class Building(object):
     def __init__(self, floors):
         self._floors = [None]*floors
     def occupy(self, floor_number, data):
          self._floors[floor_number] = data
     def get_floor_data(self, floor_number):
          return self._floors[floor_number]

building1 = Building(4) # Construct a building with 4 floors
building1.occupy(0, 'Reception')
building1.occupy(1, 'ABC Corp')
building1.occupy(2, 'DEF Inc')
print( building1.get_floor_data(2) )

We could however use __getitem__ (and its counterpart __setitem__) to make the usage of the Building class 'nicer'.

class Building(object):
     def __init__(self, floors):
         self._floors = [None]*floors
     def __setitem__(self, floor_number, data):
          self._floors[floor_number] = data
     def __getitem__(self, floor_number):
          return self._floors[floor_number]

building1 = Building(4) # Construct a building with 4 floors
building1[0] = 'Reception'
building1[1] = 'ABC Corp'
building1[2] = 'DEF Inc'
print( building1[2] )

Whether you use __setitem__ like this really depends on how you plan to abstract your data - in this case we have decided to treat a building as a container of floors (and you could also implement an iterator for the Building, and maybe even the ability to slice - i.e. get more than one floor's data at a time - it depends on what you need.

SQL select only rows with max value on a column

I used the below to solve a problem of my own. I first created a temp table and inserted the max rev value per unique id.

CREATE TABLE #temp1
(
    id varchar(20)
    , rev int
)
INSERT INTO #temp1
SELECT a.id, MAX(a.rev) as rev
FROM
    (
        SELECT id, content, SUM(rev) as rev
        FROM YourTable
        GROUP BY id, content
    ) as a
GROUP BY a.id
ORDER BY a.id

I then joined these max values (#temp1) to all of the possible id/content combinations. By doing this, I naturally filter out the non-maximum id/content combinations, and am left with the only max rev values for each.

SELECT a.id, a.rev, content
FROM #temp1 as a
LEFT JOIN
    (
        SELECT id, content, SUM(rev) as rev
        FROM YourTable
        GROUP BY id, content
    ) as b on a.id = b.id and a.rev = b.rev
GROUP BY a.id, a.rev, b.content
ORDER BY a.id

Visual Studio Code compile on save

I can say with the latest version of TypeScript 1.8.X and 1.0 of Visual Studio code, the technique I showed is obsolete. Simply use a tsconfig.json at the root level of your project and all works automatically for syntax checking. Then use tsc -w on the command line for watching / recompiling automatically. It will read the same tsconfig.json file for options and config of ts compile.

// tsconfig.json

{
    "compilerOptions": {
        "module": "amd",
        "target": "ES5",
        "noImplicitAny": false,
        "removeComments": true,
        "preserveConstEnums": true,
        "inlineSourceMap": true
    },
    "exclude": [ "node_modules" ]

Margin while printing html page

If you know the target paper size, you can place your content in a DIV with that specific size and add a margin to that DIV to simulate the print margin. Unfortunately, I don't believe you have extra control over the print functionality apart from just show the print dialog box.

Matching strings with wildcard

*X*YZ* = string contains X and contains YZ

@".*X.*YZ"

X*YZ*P = string starts with X, contains YZ and ends with P.

Using JQuery hover with HTML image map

I found this wonderful mapping script (mapper.js) that I have used in the past. What's different about it is you can hover over the map or a link on your page to make the map area highlight. Sadly it's written in javascript and requires a lot of in-line coding in the HTML - I would love to see this script ported over to jQuery :P

Also, check out all the demos! I think this example could almost be made into a simple online game (without using flash) - make sure you click on the different camera angles.

Repeat string to certain length

This is pretty pythonic:

Either decorate your root entity with the XmlRoot attribute which will be used at compile time.

[XmlRoot(Namespace = "www.contoso.com", ElementName = "MyGroupName", DataType = "string", IsNullable=true)]

Or specify the root attribute when de serializing at runtime.

XmlRootAttribute xRoot = new XmlRootAttribute();
xRoot.ElementName = "user";
// xRoot.Namespace = "http://www.cpandl.com";
xRoot.IsNullable = true;

XmlSerializer xs = new XmlSerializer(typeof(User),xRoot);

How to get the last char of a string in PHP?

From PHP 7.1 you can do this (Accepted rfc for negative string offsets):

<?php
$silly = 'Mary had a little lamb';
echo $silly[-20];
echo $silly{-6};
echo $silly[-3];
echo $silly[-15];
echo $silly[-13];
echo $silly[-1];
echo $silly[-4];
echo $silly{-10};
echo $silly[-4];
echo $silly[-8];
echo $silly{3}; // <-- this will be deprecated in PHP 7.4
die();

I'll let you guess the output.

Also, I added this to xenonite's performance code with these results:

substr() took 7.0334868431091seconds

array access took 2.3111131191254seconds

Direct string access (negative string offsets) took 1.7971360683441seconds

How do I compile with -Xlint:unchecked?

If you work with an IDE like NetBeans, you can specify the Xlint:unchecked compiler option in the propertys of your project.

Just go to projects window, right click in the project and then click in Properties.

In the window that appears search the Compiling category, and in the textbox labeled Additional Compiler Options set the Xlint:unchecked option.

Thus, the setting will remain set for every time you compile the project.

How can I convert spaces to tabs in Vim or Linux?

If you have GNU coreutils installed, consider %!unexpand --first-only or for 4-space tabs, consider %!unexpand -t 4 --first-only (--first-only is present just in case you were accidentally invoking unexpand with --all).

Note that this will only replace the spaces preceding the prescribed tab stops, not the spaces that follow them; you will see no visual difference in vim unless you display tabs more literally; for example, my ~/.vimrc contains set list listchars=tab:?? (I suspect this is why you thought unexpand didn't work).

https with WCF error: "Could not find base address that matches scheme https"

It turned out that my problem was that I was using a load balancer to handle the SSL, which then sent it over http to the actual server, which then complained.

Description of a fix is here: http://blog.hackedbrain.com/2006/09/26/how-to-ssl-passthrough-with-wcf-or-transportwithmessagecredential-over-plain-http/

Edit: I fixed my problem, which was slightly different, after talking to microsoft support.

My silverlight app had its endpoint address in code going over https to the load balancer. The load balancer then changed the endpoint address to http and to point to the actual server that it was going to. So on each server's web config I added a listenUri for the endpoint that was http instead of https

<endpoint address="" listenUri="http://[LOAD_BALANCER_ADDRESS]" ... />

How to provide shadow to Button

Sample 9 patch image with shadow

After a lots of research I found an easy method.

Create a 9 patch image and apply it as button or any other view's background.

You can create a 9 patch image with shadow using this website.

Put the 9 patch image in your drawable directory and apply it as the background for the button.

mButton.setBackground(ContextCompat.getDrawable(mContext, R.drawable.your_9_patch_image);

How to remove duplicate white spaces in string using Java?

If you want to get rid of all leading and trailing extraneous whitespace then you want to do something like this:

// \\A = Start of input boundary
// \\z = End of input boundary
string = string.replaceAll("\\A\\s+(.*?)\\s+\\z", "$1");

Then you can remove the duplicates using the other strategies listed here:

string = string.replaceAll("\\s+"," ");

What is middleware exactly?

There are (at least) three different definitions I'm aware of

  • in business computing, middleware is messaging and integration software between applications and services

  • in gaming, middleware is pretty well anything that is provided by a third-party

  • in (some) embedded software systems, middleware provides services that applications use, which are composed out of the functions provided by the hardware abstraction layer - it sits between the application layer and the hardware abstraction layer.

How can I interrupt a running code in R with a keyboard command?

I know this is old, but I ran into the same issue. I'm on a Mac/Ubuntu and switch back and forth. What I have found is that just sending a simple interrupt signal to the main R process does exactly what you're looking for. I've ran scripts that went on for as long as 24 hours and the signal interrupt works very well. You should be able to run kill in terminal:

$ kill -2 pid

You can find the pid by running

$ps aux | grep exec/R

Not sure about Windows since I'm not ever on there, but I can't imagine there's not an option to do this as well in Command Prompt/Task Manager

Hope this helps!

How to correctly represent a whitespace character

Which whitespace character? The empty string is pretty unambiguous - it's a sequence of 0 characters. However, " ", "\t" and "\n" are all strings containing a single character which is characterized as whitespace.

If you just mean a space, use a space. If you mean some other whitespace character, there may well be a custom escape sequence for it (e.g. "\t" for tab) or you can use a Unicode escape sequence ("\uxxxx"). I would discourage you from including non-ASCII characters in your source code, particularly whitespace ones.

EDIT: Now that you've explained what you want to do (which should have been in your question to start with) you'd be better off using Regex.Split with a regular expression of \s which represents whitespace:

Regex regex = new Regex(@"\s");
string[] bits = regex.Split(text.ToLower());

See the Regex Character Classes documentation for more information on other character classes.

How can I auto-elevate my batch file, so that it requests from UAC administrator rights if required?

I use PowerShell to re-launch the script elevated if it's not. Put these lines at the very top of your script.

net file 1>nul 2>nul && goto :run || powershell -ex unrestricted -Command "Start-Process -Verb RunAs -FilePath '%comspec%' -ArgumentList '/c %~fnx0 %*'"
goto :eof
:run
:: TODO: Put code here that needs elevation

I copied the 'net name' method from @Matt's answer. His answer is much better documented and has error messages and the like. This one has the advantage that PowerShell is already installed and available on Windows 7 and up. No temporary VBScript (*.vbs) files, and you don't have to download tools.

This method should work without any configuration or setup, as long as your PowerShell execution permissions aren't locked down.

How to change RGB color to HSV?

Have you considered simply using System.Drawing namespace? For example:

System.Drawing.Color color = System.Drawing.Color.FromArgb(red, green, blue);
float hue = color.GetHue();
float saturation = color.GetSaturation();
float lightness = color.GetBrightness();

Note that it's not exactly what you've asked for (see differences between HSL and HSV and the Color class does not have a conversion back from HSL/HSV but the latter is reasonably easy to add.

How to retrieve element value of XML using Java?

There are two general ways of doing that. You will either create a Domain Object Model of that XML file, take a look at this

and the second choice is using event driven parsing, which is an alternative to DOM xml representation. Imho you can find the best overall comparison of these two basic techniques here. Of course there are much more to know about processing xml, for instance if you are given XML schema definition (XSD), you could use JAXB.

How would I access variables from one class to another?

class ClassA(object):
    def __init__(self):
        self.var1 = 1
        self.var2 = 2
    def method(self):
        self.var1 = self.var1 + self.var2
        return self.var1

class ClassB(ClassA):
    def __init__(self):
        ClassA.__init__(self)

object1 = ClassA()
sum = object1.method()
object2 = ClassB()
print sum

In Python how should I test if a variable is None, True or False

I believe that throwing an exception is a better idea for your situation. An alternative will be the simulation method to return a tuple. The first item will be the status and the second one the result:

result = simulate(open("myfile"))
if not result[0]:
  print "error parsing stream"
else:
  ret= result[1]

Setting log level of message at runtime in slf4j

The method I use is to import the ch.qos.logback modules and then type-cast the slf4j Logger instance to a ch.qos.logback.classic.Logger. This instance includes a setLevel() method.

import ch.qos.logback.classic.Level;
import ch.qos.logback.classic.Logger;

Logger levelSet = (Logger) LoggerFactory.getLogger(Logger.ROOT_LOGGER_NAME);

// Now you can set the desired logging-level
levelSet.setLevel( Level.OFF );

To find out the possible Logging-levels, you can explode the ch.qos.logback class to see all the possible values for Level:

prompt$ javap -cp logback-classic-1.2.3.jar ch.qos.logback.classic.Level

The results are the following:

{
   // ...skipping
   public static final ch.qos.logback.classic.Level OFF;
   public static final ch.qos.logback.classic.Level ERROR;
   public static final ch.qos.logback.classic.Level WARN;
   public static final ch.qos.logback.classic.Level INFO;
   public static final ch.qos.logback.classic.Level DEBUG;
   public static final ch.qos.logback.classic.Level TRACE;
   public static final ch.qos.logback.classic.Level ALL;
}

                .setContentText(message)
                .setSmallIcon(icon, level)
                .setLargeIcon(largeIcon)
                .setContentIntent(intent)
                .setColorized(true)
                .setDefaults(0)
                .setCategory(Notification.CATEGORY_SERVICE)
                .setVisibility(NotificationCompat.VISIBILITY_PUBLIC)
                .setPriority(NotificationCompat.PRIORITY_HIGH);

What is an MDF file?

SQL Server databases use two files - an MDF file, known as the primary database file, which contains the schema and data, and a LDF file, which contains the logs. See wikipedia. A database may also use secondary database file, which normally uses a .ndf extension.

As John S. indicates, these file extensions are purely convention - you can use whatever you want, although I can't think of a good reason to do that.

How to convert int[] to Integer[] in Java?

I was wrong in a previous answer. The proper solution is to use this class as a key in the map wrapping the actual int[].

public class IntArrayWrapper {
        int[] data;

        public IntArrayWrapper(int[] data) {
            this.data = data;
        }

        @Override
        public boolean equals(Object o) {
            if (this == o) return true;
            if (o == null || getClass() != o.getClass()) return false;

            IntArrayWrapper that = (IntArrayWrapper) o;

            if (!Arrays.equals(data, that.data)) return false;

            return true;
        }

        @Override
        public int hashCode() {
            return data != null ? Arrays.hashCode(data) : 0;
        }
    }

and change your code like this:

   Map<IntArrayWrapper, Double > freqs = new HashMap<IntArrayWrapper, Double>();

    for (int[] data : datas) {
        IntArrayWrapper wrapper = new IntArrayWrapper(data);

        if ( freqs.containsKey(wrapper)) {
            freqs.put(wrapper, freqs.get(wrapper) + p);
        }

        freqs.put(wrapper, p);
    }

Factory Pattern. When to use factory methods?

Factory classes are more heavyweight, but give you certain advantages. In cases when you need to build your objects from multiple, raw data sources they allow you to encapsulate only the building logic (and maybe the aggregation of the data) in one place. There it can be tested in abstract without being concerned with the object interface.

I have found this a useful pattern, particularly where I am unable to replace and inadequate ORM and want to efficiently instantiate many objects from DB table joins or stored procedures.

Can attributes be added dynamically in C#?

This really depends on what exactly you're trying to accomplish.

The System.ComponentModel.TypeDescriptor stuff can be used to add attributes to types, properties and object instances, and it has the limitation that you have to use it to retrieve those properties as well. If you're writing the code that consumes those attributes, and you can live within those limitations, then I'd definitely suggest it.

As far as I know, the PropertyGrid control and the visual studio design surface are the only things in the BCL that consume the TypeDescriptor stuff. In fact, that's how they do about half the things they really need to do.

Entity Framework code-first: migration fails with update-database, forces unneccessary(?) add-migration

I also tried deleting the database again, called update-database and then add-migration. I ended up with an additional migration that seems not to change anything (see below)

Based on above details, I think you have done last thing first. If you run Update database before Add-migration, it won't update the database with your migration schemas. First you need to add the migration and then run update command.

Try them in this order using package manager console.

PM> Enable-migrations //You don't need this as you have already done it
PM> Add-migration Give_it_a_name
PM> Update-database

Naming returned columns in Pandas aggregate function?

I agree with the OP that it seems more natural and consistent to name and define the output columns in the same place (e.g. as is done with tidyverse's summarize in R), but a work-around in pandas for now is to create the new columns with desired names via assign before doing the aggregation:

data.assign(
    f=data['column1'],
    mean=data['column2'],
    std=data['column2']
).groupby('Country').agg(dict(f=sum, mean=np.mean, std=np.std)).reset_index()

(Using reset_index turns 'Country', 'f', 'mean', and 'std' all into regular columns with a separate integer index.)

Setting the zoom level for a MKMapView

Based on @AdilSoomro's great answer. I have come up with this:

                   animated:(BOOL)animated;

-(double) getZoomLevel;
@end

@implementation MKMapView (ZoomLevel)

- (void)setCenterCoordinate:(CLLocationCoordinate2D)centerCoordinate
                  zoomLevel:(NSUInteger)zoomLevel animated:(BOOL)animated {
    MKCoordinateSpan span = MKCoordinateSpanMake(0, 360/pow(2, zoomLevel)*self.frame.size.width/256);
    [self setRegion:MKCoordinateRegionMake(centerCoordinate, span) animated:animated];
}

-(double) getZoomLevel {
    return log2(360 * ((self.frame.size.width/256) / self.region.span.longitudeDelta));

How to configure welcome file list in web.xml

You need to put the JSP file in /index.jsp instead of in /WEB-INF/jsp/index.jsp. This way the whole servlet is superflous by the way.

WebContent
 |-- META-INF
 |-- WEB-INF
 |    `-- web.xml
 `-- index.jsp

If you're absolutely positive that you need to invoke a servlet this strange way, then you should map it on an URL pattern of /index.jsp instead of /index. You only need to change it to get the request dispatcher from request instead of from config and get rid of the whole init() method.

In case you actually intend to have a "home page servlet" (and thus not a welcome file — which has an entirely different purpose; namely the default file which sould be served when a folder is being requested, which is thus not specifically the root folder), then you should be mapping the servlet on the empty string URL pattern.

<servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>index</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern></url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>

See also Difference between / and /* in servlet mapping url pattern.

Escape a string in SQL Server so that it is safe to use in LIKE expression

To escape special characters in a LIKE expression you prefix them with an escape character. You get to choose which escape char to use with the ESCAPE keyword. (MSDN Ref)

For example this escapes the % symbol, using \ as the escape char:

select * from table where myfield like '%15\% off%' ESCAPE '\'

If you don't know what characters will be in your string, and you don't want to treat them as wildcards, you can prefix all wildcard characters with an escape char, eg:

set @myString = replace(
                replace(
                replace(
                replace( @myString
                ,    '\', '\\' )
                ,    '%', '\%' )
                ,    '_', '\_' )
                ,    '[', '\[' )

(Note that you have to escape your escape char too, and make sure that's the inner replace so you don't escape the ones added from the other replace statements). Then you can use something like this:

select * from table where myfield like '%' + @myString + '%' ESCAPE '\'

Also remember to allocate more space for your @myString variable as it will become longer with the string replacement.

Scale an equation to fit exact page width

I just had the situation that I wanted this only for lines exceeding \linewidth, that is: Squeezing long lines slightly. Since it took me hours to figure this out, I would like to add it here.

I want to emphasize that scaling fonts in LaTeX is a deadly sin! In nearly every situation, there is a better way (e.g. multline of the mathtools package). So use it conscious.

In this particular case, I had no influence on the code base apart the preamble and some lines slightly overshooting the page border when I compiled it as an eBook-scaled pdf.

\usepackage{environ}         % provides \BODY
\usepackage{etoolbox}        % provides \ifdimcomp

Component based game engine design

Interesting artcle...

I've had a quick hunt around on google and found nothing, but you might want to check some of the comments - plenty of people seem to have had a go at implementing a simple component demo, you might want to take a look at some of theirs for inspiration:

http://www.unseen-academy.de/componentSystem.html
http://www.mcshaffry.com/GameCode/thread.php?threadid=732
http://www.codeplex.com/Wikipage?ProjectName=elephant

Also, the comments themselves seem to have a fairly in-depth discussion on how you might code up such a system.

What does "The code generator has deoptimised the styling of [some file] as it exceeds the max of "100KB"" mean?

This is maybe not the case of original OP question, but: if you exceeds the default max size, this maybe a symptom of some other issue you have. in my case, I had the warrning, but finally it turned into a FATAL ERROR: MarkCompactCollector: semi-space copy, fallback in old gen Allocation failed - JavaScript heap out of memory. the reason was that i dynamically imported the current module, so this ended up with an endless loop...

Showing an image from an array of images - Javascript

Just as Diodeus said, you're comparing an Image to a HTMLDomObject. Instead compare their .src attribute:

var imgArray = new Array();

imgArray[0] = new Image();
imgArray[0].src = 'images/img/Splash_image1.jpg';

imgArray[1] = new Image();
imgArray[1].src = 'images/img/Splash_image2.jpg';

/* ... more images ... */

imgArray[5] = new Image();
imgArray[5].src = 'images/img/Splash_image6.jpg';

/*------------------------------------*/

function nextImage(element)
{
    var img = document.getElementById(element);

    for(var i = 0; i < imgArray.length;i++)
    {
        if(imgArray[i].src == img.src) // << check this
        {
            if(i === imgArray.length){
                document.getElementById(element).src = imgArray[0].src;
                break;
            }
            document.getElementById(element).src = imgArray[i+1].src;
            break;
        }
    }
}

What is The Rule of Three?

Basically if you have a destructor (not the default destructor) it means that the class that you defined has some memory allocation. Suppose that the class is used outside by some client code or by you.

    MyClass x(a, b);
    MyClass y(c, d);
    x = y; // This is a shallow copy if assignment operator is not provided

If MyClass has only some primitive typed members a default assignment operator would work but if it has some pointer members and objects that do not have assignment operators the result would be unpredictable. Therefore we can say that if there is something to delete in destructor of a class, we might need a deep copy operator which means we should provide a copy constructor and assignment operator.

How to cast the size_t to double or int C++

A cast, as Blaz Bratanic suggested:

size_t data = 99999999;
int convertdata = static_cast<int>(data);

is likely to silence the warning (though in principle a compiler can warn about anything it likes, even if there's a cast).

But it doesn't solve the problem that the warning was telling you about, namely that a conversion from size_t to int really could overflow.

If at all possible, design your program so you don't need to convert a size_t value to int. Just store it in a size_t variable (as you've already done) and use that.

Converting to double will not cause an overflow, but it could result in a loss of precision for a very large size_t value. Again, it doesn't make a lot of sense to convert a size_t to a double; you're still better off keeping the value in a size_t variable.

(R Sahu's answer has some suggestions if you can't avoid the cast, such as throwing an exception on overflow.)

How to deal with missing src/test/java source folder in Android/Maven project?

This is a bug in the Android Connector for M2E (m2e-android) that was recently fixed:

https://github.com/rgladwell/m2e-android/commit/2b490f900153cd34fff1cec47fe5aeffabe44d87

This fix has been merged and will be available with the next release. In the meantime you can test the new fix by installing from the following update site:

http://rgladwell.github.com/m2e-android/updates/master/

How to prevent gcc optimizing some statements in C?

Instead of using the new pragmas, you can also use __attribute__((optimize("O0"))) for your needs. This has the advantage of just applying to a single function and not all functions defined in the same file.

Usage example:

void __attribute__((optimize("O0"))) foo(unsigned char data) {
    // unmodifiable compiler code
}

Redirecting from cshtml page

This clearly is a bad case of controller logic in a view. It would be better to do this in a controller and return the desired view.

[ChildActionOnly]
public ActionResult Results()
{
    EnumerableRowCollection<DataRow> custs = ViewBag.Customers;
    bool anyRows = custs.Any();

    if(anyRows == false)
    {
        return View("NoResults");
    }
    else
    {
        return View("OtherView");
    }
}

Modify NoResults.cshtml to a Partial.

And call this as a Partial view in the parent view

@Html.Partial("Results")

You might have to pass the Customer collection as a model to the Result action or in a ViewDataDictionary due to reasons explained here: Can't access ViewBag in a partial view in ASP.NET MVC3

The ChildActionOnly attribute will make sure you cannot go to this page by navigating and that this view must be rendered as a partial, thus by a parent view. cfr: Using ChildActionOnly in MVC

Subtract a value from every number in a list in Python?

If are you working with numbers a lot, you might want to take a look at NumPy. It lets you perform all kinds of operation directly on numerical arrays. For example:

>>> import numpy
>>> array = numpy.array([49, 51, 53, 56])
>>> array - 13
array([36, 38, 40, 43])

How can I switch views programmatically in a view controller? (Xcode, iPhone)

The instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier is the Storyboard ID.

NextViewController *NVC = [self.storyboard instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier:@"NextViewController"];
[self presentViewController:NVC animated:YES completion:nil];

disable all form elements inside div

For me the accepted answer did not work as I had some asp net hidden fields which got disabled as well so I chose only to disable visible fields

//just to save the list so we can enable fields later
var list = [];
$('#parent-selector').find(':input:visible:not([readonly][disabled]),button').each(function () {
    list.push('#' + this.id);
});

$(list.join(',')).attr('readonly', true);

TypeError: only length-1 arrays can be converted to Python scalars while plot showing

Take note of what is printed for x. You are trying to convert an array (basically just a list) into an int. length-1 would be an array of a single number, which I assume numpy just treats as a float. You could do this, but it's not a purely-numpy solution.

EDIT: I was involved in a post a couple of weeks back where numpy was slower an operation than I had expected and I realised I had fallen into a default mindset that numpy was always the way to go for speed. Since my answer was not as clean as ayhan's, I thought I'd use this space to show that this is another such instance to illustrate that vectorize is around 10% slower than building a list in Python. I don't know enough about numpy to explain why this is the case but perhaps someone else does?

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import datetime

time_start = datetime.datetime.now()

# My original answer
def f(x):
    rebuilt_to_plot = []
    for num in x:
        rebuilt_to_plot.append(np.int(num))
    return rebuilt_to_plot

for t in range(10000):
    x = np.arange(1, 15.1, 0.1)
    plt.plot(x, f(x))

time_end = datetime.datetime.now()

# Answer by ayhan
def f_1(x):
    return np.int(x)

for t in range(10000):
    f2 = np.vectorize(f_1)
    x = np.arange(1, 15.1, 0.1)
    plt.plot(x, f2(x))

time_end_2 = datetime.datetime.now()

print time_end - time_start
print time_end_2 - time_end

How to reverse an animation on mouse out after hover

lol, it has a very easy solution with CSS only. Here you go

#thing { padding: 10px; border-radius: 5px;

/* HOVER OFF */ -webkit-transition: padding 2s; }

#thing:hover { padding: 20px; border-radius: 15px;

/* HOVER ON */ -webkit-transition: border-radius 2s; }

Download file of any type in Asp.Net MVC using FileResult?

GetFile should be closing the file (or opening it within a using). Then you can delete the file after conversion to bytes-- the download will be done on that byte buffer.

    byte[] GetFile(string s)
    {
        byte[] data;
        using (System.IO.FileStream fs = System.IO.File.OpenRead(s))
        {
            data = new byte[fs.Length];
            int br = fs.Read(data, 0, data.Length);
            if (br != fs.Length)
                throw new System.IO.IOException(s);
        }
        return data;
    }

So in your download method...

        byte[] fileBytes = GetFile(file);
        // delete the file after conversion to bytes
        System.IO.File.Delete(file);
        // have the file download dialog only display the base name of the file            return File(fileBytes, System.Net.Mime.MediaTypeNames.Application.Octet, Path.GetFileName(file));

Batch file to delete files older than N days

Ok was bored a bit and came up with this, which contains my version of a poor man's Linux epoch replacement limited for daily usage (no time retention):

7daysclean.cmd

@echo off
setlocal ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
set day=86400
set /a year=day*365
set /a strip=day*7
set dSource=C:\temp

call :epoch %date%
set /a slice=epoch-strip

for /f "delims=" %%f in ('dir /a-d-h-s /b /s %dSource%') do (
    call :epoch %%~tf
    if !epoch! LEQ %slice% (echo DELETE %%f ^(%%~tf^)) ELSE echo keep %%f ^(%%~tf^)
)
exit /b 0

rem Args[1]: Year-Month-Day
:epoch
    setlocal ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
    for /f "tokens=1,2,3 delims=-" %%d in ('echo %1') do set Years=%%d& set Months=%%e& set Days=%%f
    if "!Months:~0,1!"=="0" set Months=!Months:~1,1!
    if "!Days:~0,1!"=="0" set Days=!Days:~1,1!
    set /a Days=Days*day
    set /a _months=0
    set i=1&& for %%m in (31 28 31 30 31 30 31 31 30 31 30 31) do if !i! LSS !Months! (set /a _months=!_months! + %%m*day&& set /a i+=1)
    set /a Months=!_months!
    set /a Years=(Years-1970)*year
    set /a Epoch=Years+Months+Days
    endlocal& set Epoch=%Epoch%
    exit /b 0

USAGE

set /a strip=day*7 : Change 7 for the number of days to keep.

set dSource=C:\temp : This is the starting directory to check for files.

NOTES

This is non-destructive code, it will display what would have happened.

Change :

if !epoch! LEQ %slice% (echo DELETE %%f ^(%%~tf^)) ELSE echo keep %%f ^(%%~tf^)

to something like :

if !epoch! LEQ %slice% del /f %%f

so files actually get deleted

February: is hard-coded to 28 days. Bissextile years is a hell to add, really. if someone has an idea that would not add 10 lines of code, go ahead and post so I add it to my code.

epoch: I did not take time into consideration, as the need is to delete files older than a certain date, taking hours/minutes would have deleted files from a day that was meant for keeping.

LIMITATION

epoch takes for granted your short date format is YYYY-MM-DD. It would need to be adapted for other settings or a run-time evaluation (read sShortTime, user-bound configuration, configure proper field order in a filter and use the filter to extract the correct data from the argument).

Did I mention I hate this editor's auto-formating? it removes the blank lines and the copy-paste is a hell.

I hope this helps.

php exec command (or similar) to not wait for result

From the documentation:

In order to execute a command and have it not hang your PHP script while
it runs, the program you run must not output back to PHP. To do this,
redirect both stdout and stderr to /dev/null, then background it.

> /dev/null 2>&1 &

In order to execute a command and have
it spawned off as another process that
is not dependent on the Apache thread
to keep running (will not die if
somebody cancels the page) run this:

exec('bash -c "exec nohup setsid your_command > /dev/null 2>&1 &"');

Create XML file using java

I am providing an answer from my own blog. Hope this will help.

What will be output?

Following XML file named users.xml will be created.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>
<users>
    <user uid="1">
        <firstname>Interview</firstname>
        <lastname>Bubble</lastname>

PROCEDURE

Basic steps, in order to create an XML File with a DOM Parser, are:

  1. Create a DocumentBuilder instance.

  2. Create a Document from the above DocumentBuilder.

  3. Create the elements you want using the Element class and its appendChild method.

  4. Create a new Transformer instance and a new DOMSource instance.

  5. Create a new StreamResult to the output stream you want to use.

  6. Use transform method to write the DOM object to the output stream.

How to trigger Jenkins builds remotely and to pass parameters

To add to this question, I found out that you don't have to use the /buildWithParameters endpoint.

In my scenario, I have a script that triggers Jenkins to run tests after a deployment. Some of these tests require extra info about the deployment to work correctly.

If I tried to use /buildWithParameters on a job that does not expect parameters, the job would not run. I don't want to go in and edit every job to require fake parameters just to get the jobs to run.

Instead, I found you can pass parameters like this:

curl -X POST --data-urlencode "token=${TOKEN}" --data-urlencode json='{"parameter": [{"name": "myParam", "value": "TEST"}]}' https://jenkins.corp/job/$JENKINS_JOB/build

With this json=... it will pass the param myParam with value TEST to the job whenever the call is made. However, the Jenkins job will still run even if it is not expecting the parameter myParam.

The only scenario this does not cover is if the job has a parameter that is NOT passed in the json. Even if the job has a default value set for the parameter, it will fail to run the job. In this scenario you will run into the following error message / stack trace when you call /build:

java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: No such parameter definition: myParam

I realize that this answer is several years late, but I hope this may be useful info for someone else!

Note: I am using Jenkins v2.163

How do I remove my IntelliJ license in 2019.3?

For Linux to reset current 30 days expiration license, you must run code:

rm ~/.config/JetBrains/IntelliJIdea2019.3/options/other.xml
rm -rf ~/.config/JetBrains/IntelliJIdea2019.3/eval/*
rm -rf .java/.userPrefs

Passing parameters on button action:@selector

Add the hidden titleLabel to the parameter is the best solution.

I generated a array arrUrl which store the NSURL of the mov files in my phone album by enumerate assets block.

After that, I grab on Frame, lets say, get the frame at 3:00 second in the movie file, and generated the image file from the frame.

Next, loop over the arrUrl, and use program generate the button with image in the button, append the button to subview of the self.view.

Because I have to pass the movie Url to playMovie function, I have to assign the button.titleLabel.text with one movie url. and the the button events function, retrieve the url from the buttontitleLable.txt.

-(void)listVideos

{
   for(index=0;index<[self.arrUrl count];index++{
      UIButton *imageButton = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];
      imageButton.frame = CGRectMake(20,50+60*index,50,50);

      NSURL *dUrl = [self.arrUrl objectAtIndex:index];

      [imageButton setImage:[[UIImage allow] initWithCGImage:*[self getFrameFromeVideo:dUrl]] forState:UIControlStateNormal];
      [imageButton addTarget:self action:@selector(playMovie:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
      imageButton.titleLabel.text = [NSString strinfWithFormat:@"%@",dUrl];
      imageButton.titleLabel.hidden = YES;

      [self.view addSubView:imageButton];
   }
}

-(void)playMovie:(id) sender{
   UIButton *btn = (UIButton *)sender;
   NSURL *movUrl = [NSURL URLWithString:btn.titleLabel.text];
   moviePlayer = [[MPMoviePlayerViewController alloc] initWithContentURL:movUrl];
   [self presentMoviePlayerViewControllerAnimated:moviePlayer];
}

-(CGIImageRef *)getFrameFromVideo:(NSURL *)mUrl{
   AVURLAsset *asset = [[AVURLAsset alloc] initWithURL:mUrl option:nil];
   AVAssetImageGenerator *generator = [[AVAssetImageGenerator alloc] initWithAsset:asset];
   generator.appliesPreferredTrackTransform = YES;
   NSError *error =nil;
   CMTime = CMTimeMake(3,1);
   CGImageRef imageRef = [generator copyCGImageAtTime:time actualTime:nil error:&error];
   if(error !=nil) {
      NSLog(@"%@",sekf,error);
   }

disabling spring security in spring boot app

Try this. Make a new class

@Configuration
public class SecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {

    @Override
    protected void configure(HttpSecurity httpSecurity) throws Exception {
        httpSecurity.authorizeRequests().antMatchers("/").permitAll();
}

}

Basically this tells Spring to allow access to every url. @Configuration tells spring it's a configuration class

gnuplot plotting multiple line graphs

andyras is completely correct. One minor addition, try this (for example)

plot 'ls.dat' using 4:xtic(1)

This will keep your datafile in the correct order, but also preserve your version tic labels on the x-axis.

How to get an object's properties in JavaScript / jQuery?

To get listing of object properties/values:

  1. In Firefox - Firebug:

    console.dir(<object>);

  2. Standard JS to get object keys borrowed from Slashnick:

       var fGetKeys = function(obj){
          var keys = [];
          for(var key in obj){
             keys.push(key);
          }
          return keys;
       }

    // Example to call it:

       var arrKeys = fGetKeys(document);

       for (var i=0, n=arrKeys.length; i<n; i++){
          console.log(i+1 + " - " + arrKeys[i] + document[arrKeys[i]] + "\n");
       }

Edits:

  1. <object> in the above is to be replaced with the variable reference to the object.
  2. console.log() is to be used in the console, if you're unsure what that is, you can replace it with an alert()

How to get the selected item from ListView?

Using setOnItemClickListener is the correct answer, but if you have a keyboard you can change selection even with arrows (no click is performed), so, you need to implement also setOnItemSelectedListener :

myListView.setOnItemSelectedListener(new AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener() {
            @Override
            public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> adapterView, View view, int position, long l) {
     MyObject tmp=(MyObject) adapterView.getItemAtPosition(position);
         }
            @Override
            public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> adapterView) {
                // your stuff
            }
        });

Implementation difference between Aggregation and Composition in Java

The difference is that any composition is an aggregation and not vice versa.

Let's set the terms. The Aggregation is a metaterm in the UML standard, and means BOTH composition and shared aggregation, simply named shared. Too often it is named incorrectly "aggregation". It is BAD, for composition is an aggregation, too. As I understand, you mean "shared".

Further from UML standard:

composite - Indicates that the property is aggregated compositely, i.e., the composite object has responsibility for the existence and storage of the composed objects (parts).

So, University to cathedras association is a composition, because cathedra doesn't exist out of University (IMHO)

Precise semantics of shared aggregation varies by application area and modeler.

I.e., all other associations can be drawn as shared aggregations, if you are only following to some principles of yours or of somebody else. Also look here.

Android webview & localStorage

I've also had problem with data being lost after application is restarted. Adding this helped:

webView.getSettings().setDatabasePath("/data/data/" + webView.getContext().getPackageName() + "/databases/");

PHP AES encrypt / decrypt

For information MCRYPT_MODE_ECB doesn't use the IV (initialization vector). ECB mode divide your message into blocks and each block is encrypted separately. I really don't recommended it.

CBC mode use the IV to make each message unique. CBC is recommended and should be used instead of ECB.

Example :

<?php
$password = "myPassword_!";
$messageClear = "Secret message";

// 32 byte binary blob
$aes256Key = hash("SHA256", $password, true);

// for good entropy (for MCRYPT_RAND)
srand((double) microtime() * 1000000);
// generate random iv
$iv = mcrypt_create_iv(mcrypt_get_iv_size(MCRYPT_RIJNDAEL_256, MCRYPT_MODE_CBC), MCRYPT_RAND);

$crypted = fnEncrypt($messageClear, $aes256Key);

$newClear = fnDecrypt($crypted, $aes256Key);

echo
"IV:        <code>".$iv."</code><br/>".
"Encrypred: <code>".$crypted."</code><br/>".
"Decrypred: <code>".$newClear."</code><br/>";

function fnEncrypt($sValue, $sSecretKey) {
    global $iv;
    return rtrim(base64_encode(mcrypt_encrypt(MCRYPT_RIJNDAEL_256, $sSecretKey, $sValue, MCRYPT_MODE_CBC, $iv)), "\0\3");
}

function fnDecrypt($sValue, $sSecretKey) {
    global $iv;
    return rtrim(mcrypt_decrypt(MCRYPT_RIJNDAEL_256, $sSecretKey, base64_decode($sValue), MCRYPT_MODE_CBC, $iv), "\0\3");
}

You have to stock the IV to decode each message (IV are not secret). Each message is unique because each message has an unique IV.

Android ViewPager with bottom dots

No need for that much code.

You can do all this stuff without coding so much by using only viewpager with tablayout.

Your main Layout:

<RelativeLayout
   xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
   xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
   android:layout_width="match_parent"
   android:layout_height="wrap_content">

   <android.support.v4.view.ViewPager
       android:id="@+id/pager"
       android:layout_width="match_parent"
       android:layout_height="match_parent">

   </android.support.v4.view.ViewPager>
   <android.support.design.widget.TabLayout
       android:id="@+id/tabDots"
       android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
       android:layout_width="match_parent"
       android:layout_height="wrap_content"
       app:tabBackground="@drawable/tab_selector"
       app:tabGravity="center"
       app:tabIndicatorHeight="0dp"/>
</RelativeLayout>

Hook up your UI elements inactivity or fragment as follows:

Java Code:

mImageViewPager = (ViewPager) findViewById(R.id.pager);
TabLayout tabLayout = (TabLayout) findViewById(R.id.tabDots);
tabLayout.setupWithViewPager(mImageViewPager, true);

That's it, you are good to go.

You will need to create the following xml resource file in the drawable folder.

tab_indicator_selected.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<shape
    android:innerRadius="0dp"
    android:shape="ring"
    android:thickness="4dp"
    android:useLevel="false"
    xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <solid android:color="@color/colorAccent"/>
</shape>

tab_indicator_default.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
            android:innerRadius="0dp"
            android:shape="oval"
            android:thickness="2dp"
            android:useLevel="false">
            <solid android:color="@android:color/darker_gray"/>
    </shape>

tab_selector.xml

 <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

    <item android:drawable="@drawable/tab_indicator_selected"
          android:state_selected="true"/>

    <item android:drawable="@drawable/tab_indicator_default"/>
</selector>

Feeling as lazy as I am? Well, all the above code is converted into a library! Usage Add the following in your gradle: implementation 'com.chabbal:slidingdotsplash:1.0.2' Add the following to your Activity or Fragment layout.

<com.chabbal.slidingdotsplash.SlidingSplashView
        android:id="@+id/splash"
        android:layout_width="match_parent"
        android:layout_height="match_parent"
        app:imageResources="@array/img_id_arr"/>

Create an integer array in strings.xml e.g.

<integer-array name="img_id_arr">
   <item>@drawable/img1</item>
   <item>@drawable/img2</item>
   <item>@drawable/img3</item>
   <item>@drawable/img4</item>
</integer-array>

Python's equivalent of && (logical-and) in an if-statement

I went with a purlely mathematical solution:

def front_back(a, b):
  return a[:(len(a)+1)//2]+b[:(len(b)+1)//2]+a[(len(a)+1)//2:]+b[(len(b)+1)//2:]

How to fill Dataset with multiple tables?

It is an old topic, but for some people it might be useful:

        DataSet someDataSet = new DataSet();
        SqlDataAdapter adapt = new SqlDataAdapter();

        using(SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(ConnString))
        {
            connection.Open();
            SqlCommand comm1 = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM whateverTable", connection);
            SqlCommand comm2g = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM whateverTable WHERE condition = @0", connection);
            commProcessing.Parameters.AddWithValue("@0", "value");
            someDataSet.Tables.Add("Table1");
            someDataSet.Tables.Add("Table2");

            adapt.SelectCommand = comm1;
            adapt.Fill(someDataSet.Tables["Table1"]);
            adapt.SelectCommand = comm2;
            adapt.Fill(someDataSet.Tables["Table2"]);
        }

Initialize/reset struct to zero/null

In C, it is a common idiom to zero out the memory for a struct using memset:

struct x myStruct;
memset(&myStruct, 0, sizeof(myStruct));

Technically speaking, I don't believe that this is portable because it assumes that the NULL pointer on a machine is represented by the integer value 0, but it's used widely because on most machines this is the case.

If you move from C to C++, be careful not to use this technique on every object. C++ only makes this legal on objects with no member functions and no inheritance.

.trim() in JavaScript not working in IE

We can get official code From the internet! Refer this:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/String/trim

Running the following code before any other code will create trim() if it's not natively available.

if (!String.prototype.trim) {
  (function() {
    // Make sure we trim BOM and NBSP
    var rtrim = /^[\s\uFEFF\xA0]+|[\s\uFEFF\xA0]+$/g;
    String.prototype.trim = function() {
      return this.replace(rtrim, '');
    };
  })();
}

for more: I just found there is js project for supporting EcmaScript 5: https://github.com/es-shims/es5-shim by reading the source code, we can get more knowledge about trim.

defineProperties(StringPrototype, {
 // http://blog.stevenlevithan.com/archives/faster-trim-javascript
 // http://perfectionkills.com/whitespace-deviations/
  trim: function trim() {
    if (typeof this === 'undefined' || this === null) {
      throw new TypeError("can't convert " + this + ' to object');
    }
    return String(this).replace(trimBeginRegexp, '').replace(trimEndRegexp, '');
  }
}, hasTrimWhitespaceBug);

How to get css background color on <tr> tag to span entire row

Have you tried setting the spacing to zero?

/*alternating row*/
table, tr, td, th {margin:0;border:0;padding:0;spacing:0;}
tr.rowhighlight {background-color:#f0f8ff;margin:0;border:0;padding:0;spacing:0;}

MySQL: selecting rows where a column is null

I had the same issue when converting databases from Access to MySQL (using vb.net to communicate with the database).

I needed to assess if a field (field type varchar(1)) was null.

This statement worked for my scenario:

SELECT * FROM [table name] WHERE [field name] = ''
