System.Collections.Generic.List does not contain a definition for 'Select'

You need to have the System.Linq namespace included in your view since Select is an extension method. You have a couple of options on how to do this:

Add @using System.Linq to the top of your cshtml file.

If you find that you will be using this namespace often in many of your views, you can do this for all views by modifying the web.config inside of your Views folder (not the one at the root). You should see a pages/namespace XML element, create a new add child that adds System.Linq. Here is an example:

<configuration>
    <system.web.webPages.razor>
        <pages>
            <namespaces>
                <add namespace="System.Linq" />
            </namespaces>
        </pages>
    </system.web.webPages.razor>
</configuration>

self.tableView.reloadData() not working in Swift

I was also facing the same issue, what I did wrong was that I'd forgot to add

tableView.delegate = self
tableView.dataSource = self

in the viewDidLoad() {} method. This could be one reason of self.tableView.reloadData() not working.

Creating a UITableView Programmatically

#import "ViewController.h"

@interface ViewController ()

{

    NSMutableArray *name;

}

@end

- (void)viewDidLoad

{

    [super viewDidLoad];
    name=[[NSMutableArray alloc]init];
    [name addObject:@"ronak"];
    [name addObject:@"vibha"];
    [name addObject:@"shivani"];
    [name addObject:@"nidhi"];
    [name addObject:@"firdosh"];
    [name addObject:@"himani"];

    _tableview_outlet.delegate = self;
    _tableview_outlet.dataSource = self;

}

- (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section

{

return [name count];

}

- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath

{

    static NSString *simpleTableIdentifier = @"cell";

    UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView       dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:simpleTableIdentifier];

    if (cell == nil) {
        cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:simpleTableIdentifier];
    }

    cell.textLabel.text = [name objectAtIndex:indexPath.row];
    return cell;
}

How to read and write excel file

When using the apache poi 4.1.2. The celltype changes a bit. Below is an example

    try {
        File excel = new File("/home/name/Downloads/bb.xlsx");
        FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(excel);
        XSSFWorkbook book = new XSSFWorkbook(fis);
        XSSFSheet sheet = book.getSheetAt(0);

        Iterator<Row> itr = sheet.iterator();

        // Iterating over Excel file in Java
        while (itr.hasNext()) {
            Row row = itr.next();

            Iterator<Cell> cellIterator = row.cellIterator();
            while (cellIterator.hasNext()) {

                Cell cell = cellIterator.next();

                switch (cell.getCellType()) {
                case STRING:
                    System.out.print(cell.getStringCellValue() + "\t");
                    break;
                case NUMERIC:
                    System.out.print(cell.getNumericCellValue() + "\t");
                    break;
                case BOOLEAN:
                    System.out.print(cell.getBooleanCellValue() + "\t");
                    break;
                default:

                }
            }
            System.out.println("");}
        }catch (Exception e) {
            // TODO: handle exception
            e.printStackTrace();
        }

How can a Javascript object refer to values in itself?

You can't refer to a property of an object before you have initialized that object; use an external variable.

var key1 = "it";
var obj = {
  key1 : key1,
  key2 : key1 + " works!"
};

Also, this is not a "JSON object"; it is a Javascript object. JSON is a method of representing an object with a string (which happens to be valid Javascript code).

Determining if an Object is of primitive type

I'm late to the show, but if you're testing a field, you can use getGenericType:

import static org.junit.Assert.*;

import java.lang.reflect.Field;
import java.lang.reflect.Type;
import java.util.Arrays;
import java.util.Collection;
import java.util.HashSet;

import org.junit.Test;

public class PrimitiveVsObjectTest {

    private static final Collection<String> PRIMITIVE_TYPES =
            new HashSet<>(Arrays.asList("byte", "short", "int", "long", "float", "double", "boolean", "char"));

    private static boolean isPrimitive(Type type) {
        return PRIMITIVE_TYPES.contains(type.getTypeName());
    }

    public int i1 = 34;
    public Integer i2 = 34;

    @Test
    public void primitive_type() throws NoSuchFieldException, SecurityException {
        Field i1Field = PrimitiveVsObjectTest.class.getField("i1");
        Type genericType1 = i1Field.getGenericType();
        assertEquals("int", genericType1.getTypeName());
        assertNotEquals("java.lang.Integer", genericType1.getTypeName());
        assertTrue(isPrimitive(genericType1));
    }

    @Test
    public void object_type() throws NoSuchFieldException, SecurityException {
        Field i2Field = PrimitiveVsObjectTest.class.getField("i2");
        Type genericType2 = i2Field.getGenericType();
        assertEquals("java.lang.Integer", genericType2.getTypeName());
        assertNotEquals("int", genericType2.getTypeName());
        assertFalse(isPrimitive(genericType2));
    }
}

The Oracle docs list the 8 primitive types.

Retrieving Dictionary Value Best Practices

I imagine that trygetvalue is doing something more like:

if(myDict.ReallyOptimisedVersionofContains(someKey))
{
  someVal = myDict[someKey];
  return true;
}
return false;

So hopefully no try/catch anywhere.

I think it is just a method of convenience really. I generally use it as it saves a line of code or two.

Check if a key exists inside a json object

Try this,

if(thisSession.hasOwnProperty('merchant_id')){

}

the JS Object thisSession should be like

{
amt: "10.00",
email: "[email protected]",
merchant_id: "sam",
mobileNo: "9874563210",
orderID: "123456",
passkey: "1234"
}

Push items into mongo array via mongoose

The $push operator appends a specified value to an array.

{ $push: { <field1>: <value1>, ... } }

$push adds the array field with the value as its element.

Above answer fulfils all the requirements, but I got it working by doing the following

var objFriends = { fname:"fname",lname:"lname",surname:"surname" };
Friend.findOneAndUpdate(
   { _id: req.body.id },
   { $push: { friends: objFriends  } },
  function (error, success) {
        if (error) {
            console.log(error);
        } else {
            console.log(success);
        }
    });
)

Linux command: How to 'find' only text files?

Another way of doing this:

# find . |xargs file {} \; |grep "ASCII text"

If you want empty files too:

#  find . |xargs file {} \; |egrep "ASCII text|empty"

Figure out size of UILabel based on String in Swift

Python: SyntaxError: keyword can't be an expression

I guess many of us who came to this page have a problem with Scikit Learn, one way to solve it is to create a dictionary with parameters and pass it to the model:

params = {'C': 1e9, 'gamma': 1e-07}
cls = SVC(**params)

How to pass command line arguments to a shell alias?

Just to reiterate what has been posted for other shells, in Bash the following works:

alias blah='function _blah(){ echo "First: $1"; echo "Second: $2"; };_blah'

Running the following:

blah one two

Gives the output below:

First: one
Second: two

setting an environment variable in virtualenv

What is time(NULL) in C?

You can pass in a pointer to a time_t object that time will fill up with the current time (and the return value is the same one that you pointed to). If you pass in NULL, it just ignores it and merely returns a new time_t object that represents the current time.

Flutter - The method was called on null

How can I dynamically add a directive in AngularJS?

You have a lot of pointless jQuery in there, but the $compile service is actually super simple in this case:

.directive( 'test', function ( $compile ) {
  return {
    restrict: 'E',
    scope: { text: '@' },
    template: '<p ng-click="add()">{{text}}</p>',
    controller: function ( $scope, $element ) {
      $scope.add = function () {
        var el = $compile( "<test text='n'></test>" )( $scope );
        $element.parent().append( el );
      };
    }
  };
});

You'll notice I refactored your directive too in order to follow some best practices. Let me know if you have questions about any of those.

Is there shorthand for returning a default value if None in Python?

You've got the ternary syntax x if x else '' - is that what you're after?

AngularJS Error: Cross origin requests are only supported for protocol schemes: http, data, chrome-extension, https

My problem was resolved just by adding http:// to my url address. for example I used http://localhost:3000/movies instead of localhost:3000/movies.

Does WGET timeout?

Prior to version 1.14, wget timeout arguments were not adhered to if downloading over https due to a bug.

Javascript to convert UTC to local time

The solutions above are right but might crash in FireFox and Safari! and that's what webility.js is trying to solve. Check the toUTC function, it works on most of the main browers and it returns the time in ISO format

Regular expression to find two strings anywhere in input

you don't have to use regex. In your favourite language, split on spaces, go over the splitted words, check for cat and mat. eg in Python

>>> for line in open("file"):
...     g=0;f=0
...     s = line.split()
...     for item in s:
...         if item =="cat": f=1
...         if item =="mat": g=1
...     if (g,f)==(1,1): print "found: " ,line.rstrip()

found: The cat slept on the mat in front of the fire.
found: At 5:00 pm, I found the cat scratching the wool off the mat.

How do you uninstall MySQL from Mac OS X?

You should also check /var/db/receipts and remove all entries that contain com.mysql.*

Using sudo rm -rf /var/db/receipts/com.mysql.* didn't work for me. I had to go into var/db/receipts and delete each one seperately.

Why does LayoutInflater ignore the layout_width and layout_height layout parameters I've specified?

wanna add to main answer above
I tried to follow it but my recyclerView began to stretch every item to a screen
I had to add next line after inflating for reach to goal

itemLayoutView.setLayoutParams(new RecyclerView.LayoutParams(RecyclerView.LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT, RecyclerView.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));

I already added these params by xml but it didnot work correctly
and with this line all is ok

ComboBox: Adding Text and Value to an Item (no Binding Source)

If anyone is still interested in this, here is a simple and flexible class for a combobox item with a text and a value of any type (very similar to Adam Markowitz's example):

public class ComboBoxItem<T>
{
    public string Name;
    public T value = default(T);

    public ComboBoxItem(string Name, T value)
    {
        this.Name = Name;
        this.value = value;
    }

    public override string ToString()
    {
        return Name;
    }
}

Using the <T> is better than declaring the value as an object, because with object you'd then have to keep track of the type you used for each item, and cast it in your code to use it properly.

I've been using it on my projects for quite a while now. It is really handy.

Lambda function in list comprehensions

The first one

f = lambda x: x*x
[f(x) for x in range(10)]

runs f() for each value in the range so it does f(x) for each value

the second one

[lambda x: x*x for x in range(10)]

runs the lambda for each value in the list, so it generates all of those functions.

convert month from name to number

If you want number of month from string name then

$month = 'August';
$year = 2019;
echo date('m',strtotime($month.' '.$year));

Gives 08

Or If you want the Full name of the month then

echo date('F')

OR if you want the half name of the month then

echo date('M')

How do I pull files from remote without overwriting local files?

Well, yes, and no...

I understand that you want your local copies to "override" what's in the remote, but, oh, man, if someone has modified the files in the remote repo in some different way, and you just ignore their changes and try to "force" your own changes without even looking at possible conflicts, well, I weep for you (and your coworkers) ;-)

That said, though, it's really easy to do the "right thing..."

Step 1:

git stash

in your local repo. That will save away your local updates into the stash, then revert your modified files back to their pre-edit state.

Step 2:

git pull

to get any modified versions. Now, hopefully, that won't get any new versions of the files you're worried about. If it doesn't, then the next step will work smoothly. If it does, then you've got some work to do, and you'll be glad you did.

Step 3:

git stash pop

That will merge your modified versions that you stashed away in Step 1 with the versions you just pulled in Step 2. If everything goes smoothly, then you'll be all set!

If, on the other hand, there were real conflicts between what you pulled in Step 2 and your modifications (due to someone else editing in the interim), you'll find out and be told to resolve them. Do it.

Things will work out much better this way - it will probably keep your changes without any real work on your part, while alerting you to serious, serious issues.

Detecting locked tables (locked by LOCK TABLE)

You can create your own lock with GET_LOCK(lockName,timeOut)

If you do a GET_LOCK(lockName, 0) with a 0 time out before you lock the tables and then follow that with a RELEASE_LOCK(lockName) then all other threads performing a GET_LOCK() will get a value of 0 which will tell them that the lock is being held by another thread.

However this won't work if you don't have all threads calling GET_LOCK() before locking tables. The documentation for locking tables is here

Hope that helps!

HTML.ActionLink method

I think that Joseph flipped controller and action. First comes the action then the controller. This is somewhat strange, but the way the signature looks.

Just to clarify things, this is the version that works (adaption of Joseph's example):

Html.ActionLink(article.Title,
    "Login",  // <-- ActionMethod
    "Item",   // <-- Controller Name
    new { id = article.ArticleID }, // <-- Route arguments.
    null // <-- htmlArguments .. which are none
    )

How to install "make" in ubuntu?

C# 4.0 optional out/ref arguments

What about like this?

public bool OptionalOutParamMethod([Optional] ref string pOutParam)
{
    return true;
}

You still have to pass a value to the parameter from C# but it is an optional ref param.

How to pass parameters in $ajax POST?

Try using GET method,

var request = $.ajax({
    url: 'url',
    type: 'GET',
    data: { field1: "hello", field2 : "hello2"} ,
    contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8'
});

request.done(function(data) {
      // your success code here
});

request.fail(function(jqXHR, textStatus) {
      // your failure code here
});

You cannot see parameters in URL with POST method.

Edit:

Deprecation Notice: The jqXHR.success(), jqXHR.error(), and jqXHR.complete() callbacks are removed as of jQuery 3.0. You can use jqXHR.done(), jqXHR.fail(), and jqXHR.always() instead.

Clicking URLs opens default browser

If you're using a WebView you'll have to intercept the clicks yourself if you don't want the default Android behaviour.

You can monitor events in a WebView using a WebViewClient. The method you want is shouldOverrideUrlLoading(). This allows you to perform your own action when a particular URL is selected.

You set the WebViewClient of your WebView using the setWebViewClient() method.

If you look at the WebView sample in the SDK there's an example which does just what you want. It's as simple as:

private class HelloWebViewClient extends WebViewClient {
    @Override
    public boolean shouldOverrideUrlLoading(WebView view, String url) {
        view.loadUrl(url);
        return true;
    }
}

Setting max-height for table cell contents

Just put the labels in a div inside the TD and put the height and overflow.. like below.

<table>
<tr>
  <td><div style="height:40px; overflow:hidden">Sample</div></td>
  <td><div style="height:40px; overflow:hidden">Text</div></td>
  <td><div style="height:40px; overflow:hidden">Here</div></td>
</tr>
</table>

Make Error 127 when running trying to compile code

Error 127 means one of two things:

  1. file not found: the path you're using is incorrect. double check that the program is actually in your $PATH, or in this case, the relative path is correct -- remember that the current working directory for a random terminal might not be the same for the IDE you're using. it might be better to just use an absolute path instead.
  2. ldso is not found: you're using a pre-compiled binary and it wants an interpreter that isn't on your system. maybe you're using an x86_64 (64-bit) distro, but the prebuilt is for x86 (32-bit). you can determine whether this is the answer by opening a terminal and attempting to execute it directly. or by running file -L on /bin/sh (to get your default/native format) and on the compiler itself (to see what format it is).

if the problem is (2), then you can solve it in a few diff ways:

  1. get a better binary. talk to the vendor that gave you the toolchain and ask them for one that doesn't suck.
  2. see if your distro can install the multilib set of files. most x86_64 64-bit distros allow you to install x86 32-bit libraries in parallel.
  3. build your own cross-compiler using something like crosstool-ng.
  4. you could switch between an x86_64 & x86 install, but that seems a bit drastic ;).

R: "Unary operator error" from multiline ggplot2 command

This is a well-known nuisance when posting multiline commands in R. (You can get different behavior when you source() a script to when you copy-and-paste the lines, both with multiline and comments)

Rule: always put the dangling '+' at the end of a line so R knows the command is unfinished:

ggplot(...) + geom_whatever1(...) +
  geom_whatever2(...) +
  stat_whatever3(...) +
  geom_title(...) + scale_y_log10(...)

Don't put the dangling '+' at the start of the line, since that tickles the error:

Error in "+ geom_whatever2(...) invalid argument to unary operator"

And obviously don't put dangling '+' at both end and start since that's a syntax error.

So, learn a habit of being consistent: always put '+' at end-of-line.

Maximum number of rows in an MS Access database engine table?

It's been some years since I last worked with Access but larger database files always used to have more problems and be more prone to corruption than smaller files.

Unless the database file is only being accessed by one person or stored on a robust network you may find this is a problem before the 2GB database size limit is reached.

How do I make a Docker container start automatically on system boot?

This is what crontab is for:

What's the difference between ConcurrentHashMap and Collections.synchronizedMap(Map)?

The "scalability issues" for Hashtable are present in exactly the same way in Collections.synchronizedMap(Map) - they use very simple synchronization, which means that only one thread can access the map at the same time.

This is not much of an issue when you have simple inserts and lookups (unless you do it extremely intensively), but becomes a big problem when you need to iterate over the entire Map, which can take a long time for a large Map - while one thread does that, all others have to wait if they want to insert or lookup anything.

The ConcurrentHashMap uses very sophisticated techniques to reduce the need for synchronization and allow parallel read access by multiple threads without synchronization and, more importantly, provides an Iterator that requires no synchronization and even allows the Map to be modified during interation (though it makes no guarantees whether or not elements that were inserted during iteration will be returned).

How to access single elements in a table in R

Maybe not so perfect as above ones, but I guess this is what you were looking for.

data[1:1,3:3]    #works with positive integers
data[1:1, -3:-3] #does not work, gives the entire 1st row without the 3rd element
data[i:i,j:j]    #given that i and j are positive integers

Here indexing will work from 1, i.e,

data[1:1,1:1]    #means the top-leftmost element

angular ng-repeat in reverse

When using MVC in .NET with Angular you can always use OrderByDecending() when doing your db query like this:

var reversedList = dbContext.GetAll().OrderByDecending(x => x.Id).ToList();

Then on the Angular side, it will already be reversed in some browsers (IE). When supporting Chrome and FF, you would then need to add orderBy:

<tr ng-repeat="item in items | orderBy:'-Id'">

In this example, you'd be sorting in descending order on the .Id property. If you're using paging, this gets more complicated because only the first page would be sorted. You'd need to handle this via a .js filter file for your controller, or in some other way.

Convert unsigned int to signed int C

I know it's an old question, but it's a good one, so how about this?

unsigned short int x = 65529U;
short int y = *(short int*)&x;

printf("%d\n", y);

Authenticate with GitHub using a token

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 and I kept getting the message that soon I wouldn't be able to login from console. I was terribly confused. Finally, I got to the URL below which will work. But you need to know how to create a PAT (Personal Access Token) which you are going to have to keep in a file on your computer.

Here's what the final URL will look like:

git push https://[email protected]/user-name/repo.git

long PAT (Personal Access Token) value -- The entire long value between the // and the @ sign in the url is your PAT.

You need to generate a PAT following the steps at: https://docs.github.com/en/github/authenticating-to-github/creating-a-personal-access-token

That will give you the PAT value that you will place in your URL.

When you create the PAT make sure you choose the following options so it has the ability to allow you to manage your REPOs. PAT settings

Save Your PAT Or Lose It

Once you have your PAT. You're going to need to save it in a file locally so you can use it again. If you don't save it somewhere there is no way to ever see it again and you'll be forced to create a new PAT

Now you're going to need at the very least :

  1. a way to display it in your console so you can see it again.
  2. or, A way to copy it to your clipboard automatically.

For 1, just use :

$ cat ~/files/myPatFile.txt

Where the path is a real path to the location and file where you stored your PAT value.

For 2

$ xclip -selection clipboard < ~/files/myPatFile.txt

That'll copy the contents of the file to the clipboard so you can use your PAT more easily.

FYI - if you don't have xclip do the following:

$ sudo apt-get install xclip

Downloads and installs xclip. If you don't have apt-get, you might need to use another installer (like yum)

Python: How to convert datetime format?

@Tim's answer only does half the work -- that gets it into a datetime.datetime object.

To get it into the string format you require, you use datetime.strftime:

print(datetime.strftime('%b %d,%Y'))

How to copy directories in OS X 10.7.3?

Is there something special with that directory or are you really just asking how to copy directories?

Copy recursively via CLI:

cp -R <sourcedir> <destdir>

If you're only seeing the files under the sourcedir being copied (instead of sourcedir as well), that's happening because you kept the trailing slash for sourcedir:

cp -R <sourcedir>/ <destdir>

The above only copies the files and their directories inside of sourcedir. Typically, you want to include the directory you're copying, so drop the trailing slash:

cp -R <sourcedir> <destdir>

Sum of Numbers C++

You can try:

int sum = startingNumber;
for (int i=0; i < positiveInteger; i++) {
    sum += i;
}
cout << sum;

But much easier is to note that the sum 1+2+...+n = n*(n+1) / 2, so you do not need a loop at all, just use the formula n*(n+1)/2.

How to add comments into a Xaml file in WPF?

How to connect a Windows Mobile PDA to Windows 10

Here is the answer: Download the "Windows Mobile Device Center" for your machine type, likely 64bit.
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=3182

Before you run the install, change the compatibility settings to 'Windows 7'. Then install it... Then run it: You'll find it under 'WMDC'.. Your device should now recognize, when plugged in, mine did!

How to workaround 'FB is not defined'?

FB recommends to add the async all.js include right after body, so that FB object get prepared when you use it in page.

You can also have artificial delay using setTimeout to make sure FB object is loaded. e.g.

<script>setTimeout(function(){
FB.Event.subscribe('edge.create',
function (response) {
    alert('msg via fb');
});},2000);
</script>

Convert UIImage to NSData and convert back to UIImage in Swift?

Image to Data:-

    if let img = UIImage(named: "xxx.png") {
        let pngdata = img.pngData()
    }

   if let img = UIImage(named: "xxx.jpeg") {
        let jpegdata = img.jpegData(compressionQuality: 1)
    }

Data to Image:-

Converting file size in bytes to human-readable string

I wanted the "file manager" behavior (e.g., Windows Explorer) where the number of decimal places is proportional to the number size. Seemingly none of the other answers does this.

function humanFileSize(size) {
    if (size < 1024) return size + ' B'
    let i = Math.floor(Math.log(size) / Math.log(1024))
    let num = (size / Math.pow(1024, i))
    let round = Math.round(num)
    num = round < 10 ? num.toFixed(2) : round < 100 ? num.toFixed(1) : round
    return `${num} ${'KMGTPEZY'[i-1]}B`
}

Here's some examples:

humanFileSize(0)          // "0 B"
humanFileSize(1023)       // "1023 B"
humanFileSize(1024)       // "1.00 KB"
humanFileSize(10240)      // "10.0 KB"
humanFileSize(102400)     // "100 KB"
humanFileSize(1024000)    // "1000 KB"
humanFileSize(12345678)   // "11.8 MB"
humanFileSize(1234567890) // "1.15 GB"

Ruby Array find_first object?

Do you need the object itself or do you just need to know if there is an object that satisfies. If the former then yes: use find:

found_object = my_array.find { |e| e.satisfies_condition? }

otherwise you can use any?

found_it = my_array.any?  { |e| e.satisfies_condition? }

The latter will bail with "true" when it finds one that satisfies the condition. The former will do the same, but return the object.

Access files stored on Amazon S3 through web browser

I had the same problem and I fixed it by using the

  1. new context menu "Make Public".
  2. Go to https://console.aws.amazon.com/s3/home,
  3. select the bucket and then for each Folder or File (or multiple selects) right click and
  4. "make public"

How to update the constant height constraint of a UIView programmatically?

Select the height constraint from the Interface builder and take an outlet of it. So, when you want to change the height of the view you can use the below code.

yourHeightConstraintOutlet.constant = someValue
yourView.layoutIfNeeded()

Method updateConstraints() is an instance method of UIView. It is helpful when you are setting the constraints programmatically. It updates constraints for the view. For more detail click here.

Can I have multiple :before pseudo-elements for the same element?

I've resolved this using:

.element:before {
    font-family: "Font Awesome 5 Free" , "CircularStd";
    content: "\f017" " Date";
}

Using the font family "font awesome 5 free" for the icon, and after, We have to specify the font that we are using again because if we doesn't do this, navigator will use the default font (times new roman or something like this).

How to display an IFRAME inside a jQuery UI dialog

The problems were:

  1. iframe content comes from another domain
  2. iframe dimensions need to be adjusted for each video

The solution based on omerkirk's answer involves:

  • Creating an iframe element
  • Creating a dialog with autoOpen: false, width: "auto", height: "auto"
  • Specifying iframe source, width and height before opening the dialog

Here is a rough outline of code:

HTML

<div class="thumb">
    <a href="http://jsfiddle.net/yBNVr/show/"   data-title="Std 4:3 ratio video" data-width="512" data-height="384"><img src="http://dummyimage.com/120x90/000/f00&text=Std+4-3+ratio+video" /></a></li>
    <a href="http://jsfiddle.net/yBNVr/1/show/" data-title="HD 16:9 ratio video" data-width="512" data-height="288"><img src="http://dummyimage.com/120x90/000/f00&text=HD+16-9+ratio+video" /></a></li>
</div>

jQuery

$(function () {
    var iframe = $('<iframe frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>');
    var dialog = $("<div></div>").append(iframe).appendTo("body").dialog({
        autoOpen: false,
        modal: true,
        resizable: false,
        width: "auto",
        height: "auto",
        close: function () {
            iframe.attr("src", "");
        }
    });
    $(".thumb a").on("click", function (e) {
        e.preventDefault();
        var src = $(this).attr("href");
        var title = $(this).attr("data-title");
        var width = $(this).attr("data-width");
        var height = $(this).attr("data-height");
        iframe.attr({
            width: +width,
            height: +height,
            src: src
        });
        dialog.dialog("option", "title", title).dialog("open");
    });
});

JPA entity without id

See the Java Persistence book: Identity and Sequencing

The relevant part for your question is the No Primary Key section:

Sometimes your object or table has no primary key. The best solution in this case is normally to add a generated id to the object and table. If you do not have this option, sometimes there is a column or set of columns in the table that make up a unique value. You can use this unique set of columns as your id in JPA. The JPA Id does not always have to match the database table primary key constraint, nor is a primary key or a unique constraint required.

If your table truly has no unique columns, then use all of the columns as the id. Typically when this occurs the data is read-only, so even if the table allows duplicate rows with the same values, the objects will be the same anyway, so it does not matter that JPA thinks they are the same object. The issue with allowing updates and deletes is that there is no way to uniquely identify the object's row, so all of the matching rows will be updated or deleted.

If your object does not have an id, but its' table does, this is fine. Make the object an Embeddable object, embeddable objects do not have ids. You will need a Entity that contains this Embeddable to persist and query it.

How to force Chrome browser to reload .css file while debugging in Visual Studio?

Still an issue.

Using parameters like "..css?something=random-value" changes nothing in my customer-support experience. Only name changes works.

Another take on the file renaming. I use URL Rewrite in IIS. Sometimes Helicon's Isapi Rewrite.

Add new rule.

+ Name: lame-chrome-fix.
+ Pattern: styles/(\w+)_(\d+)
+ Rewrite URL: /{R:1}.css

Note: I reserve the use of undercase to separate the name from the random number. Could be anything else.

Example:

<link href="/styles/template_<%
Response.Write( System.DateTime.UtcNow.ToString("ddmmyyhhmmss")); %>"
type="text/css" />

(No styles folder it's just a name part of the pattern)

Output code as:

<link href="/styles/template_285316115328"
rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

Redirect as:

(R:1 = template)

/template.css

Only the explanation is long.

)

To alter an existing table:

ALTER TABLE orders ALTER COLUMN Id INT IDENTITY (9586, 1);

jQuery.parseJSON throws “Invalid JSON” error due to escaped single quote in JSON

Striking a similar issue using CakePHP to output a JavaScript script-block using PHP's native json_encode. $contractorCompanies contains values that have single quotation marks and as explained above and expected json_encode($contractorCompanies) doesn't escape them because its valid JSON.

<?php $this->Html->scriptBlock("var contractorCompanies = jQuery.parseJSON( '".(json_encode($contractorCompanies)."' );"); ?>

By adding addslashes() around the JSON encoded string you then escape the quotation marks allowing Cake / PHP to echo the correct javascript to the browser. JS errors disappear.

<?php $this->Html->scriptBlock("var contractorCompanies = jQuery.parseJSON( '".addslashes(json_encode($contractorCompanies))."' );"); ?>

How can I use mySQL replace() to replace strings in multiple records?

you can write a stored procedure like this:

CREATE PROCEDURE sanitize_TABLE()

BEGIN

#replace space with underscore

UPDATE Table SET FieldName = REPLACE(FieldName," ","_") WHERE FieldName is not NULL;

#delete dot

UPDATE Table SET FieldName = REPLACE(FieldName,".","") WHERE FieldName is not NULL;

#delete (

UPDATE Table SET FieldName = REPLACE(FieldName,"(","") WHERE FieldName is not NULL;

#delete )

UPDATE Table SET FieldName = REPLACE(FieldName,")","") WHERE FieldName is not NULL;

#raplace or delete any char you want

#..........................

END

In this way you have modularized control over table.

You can also generalize stored procedure making it, parametric with table to sanitoze input parameter

How to display raw JSON data on a HTML page

Note that the link you provided does is not an HTML page, but rather a JSON document. The formatting is done by the browser.

You have to decide if:

  1. You want to show the raw JSON (not an HTML page), as in your example
  2. Show an HTML page with formatted JSON

If you want 1., just tell your application to render a response body with the JSON, set the MIME type (application/json), etc. In this case, formatting is dealt by the browser (and/or browser plugins)

If 2., it's a matter of rendering a simple minimal HTML page with the JSON where you can highlight it in several ways:

  • server-side, depending on your stack. There are solutions for almost every language
  • client-side with Javascript highlight libraries.

If you give more details about your stack, it's easier to provide examples or resources.

EDIT: For client side JS highlighting you can try higlight.js, for instance.

How can I get argv[] as int?

Basic usage

The "string to long" (strtol) function is standard for this ("long" can hold numbers much larger than "int"). This is how to use it:

#include <stdlib.h>

long arg = strtol(argv[1], NULL, 10);
// string to long(string, endpointer, base)

Since we use the decimal system, base is 10. The endpointer argument will be set to the "first invalid character", i.e. the first non-digit. If you don't care, set the argument to NULL instead of passing a pointer, as shown.

Error checking (1)

If you don't want non-digits to occur, you should make sure it's set to the "null terminator", since a \0 is always the last character of a string in C:

#include <stdlib.h>

char* p;
long arg = strtol(argv[1], &p, 10);
if (*p != '\0') // an invalid character was found before the end of the string

Error checking (2)

As the man page mentions, you can use errno to check that no errors occurred (in this case overflows or underflows).

#include <stdlib.h>
#include <errno.h>

char* p;
errno = 0; // not 'int errno', because the '#include' already defined it
long arg = strtol(argv[1], &p, 10);
if (*p != '\0' || errno != 0) {
    return 1; // In main(), returning non-zero means failure
}

// Everything went well, print it as 'long decimal'
printf("%ld", arg);

Convert to integer

So now we are stuck with this long, but we often want to work with integers. To convert a long into an int, we should first check that the number is within the limited capacity of an int. To do this, we add a second if-statement, and if it matches, we can just cast it.

#include <stdlib.h>
#include <errno.h>
#include <limits.h>

char* p;
errno = 0; // not 'int errno', because the '#include' already defined it
long arg = strtol(argv[1], &p, 10);
if (*p != '\0' || errno != 0) {
    return 1; // In main(), returning non-zero means failure
}

if (arg < INT_MIN || arg > INT_MAX) {
    return 1;
}
int arg_int = arg;

// Everything went well, print it as a regular number
printf("%d", arg_int);

To see what happens if you don't do this check, test the code without the INT_MIN/MAX if-statement. You'll see that if you pass a number larger than 2147483647 (231), it will overflow and become negative. Or if you pass a number smaller than -2147483648 (-231-1), it will underflow and become positive. Values beyond those limits are too large to fit in an integer.

Full example

#include <stdio.h>  // for printf()
#include <stdlib.h> // for strtol()
#include <errno.h>  // for errno
#include <limits.h> // for INT_MIN and INT_MAX

int main(int argc, char** argv) {
    char* p;
    errno = 0; // not 'int errno', because the '#include' already defined it
    long arg = strtol(argv[1], &p, 10);
    if (*p != '\0' || errno != 0) {
        return 1; // In main(), returning non-zero means failure
    }

    if (arg < INT_MIN || arg > INT_MAX) {
        return 1;
    }
    int arg_int = arg;

    // Everything went well, print it as a regular number plus a newline
    printf("Your value was: %d\n", arg_int);
    return 0;
}

In Bash, you can test this with:

cc code.c -o example # Compile, output to 'example'
./example $((2**31-1))  # Run it
echo "exit status: $?" # Show the return value, also called 'exit status'

Using 2**31-1, it should print the number and 0, because 231-1 is just in range. If you pass 2**31 instead (without -1), it will not print the number and the exit status will be 1.

Beyond this, you can implement custom checks: test whether the user passed an argument at all (check argc), test whether the number is in the range that you want, etc.

How to update json file with python

The issue here is that you've opened a file and read its contents so the cursor is at the end of the file. By writing to the same file handle, you're essentially appending to the file.

The easiest solution would be to close the file after you've read it in, then reopen it for writing.

with open("replayScript.json", "r") as jsonFile:
    data = json.load(jsonFile)

data["location"] = "NewPath"

with open("replayScript.json", "w") as jsonFile:
    json.dump(data, jsonFile)

Alternatively, you can use seek() to move the cursor back to the beginning of the file then start writing, followed by a truncate() to deal with the case where the new data is smaller than the previous.

with open("replayScript.json", "r+") as jsonFile:
    data = json.load(jsonFile)

    data["location"] = "NewPath"

    jsonFile.seek(0)  # rewind
    json.dump(data, jsonFile)
    jsonFile.truncate()

How do I shutdown, restart, or log off Windows via a bat file?

I would write this in Notepad or WordPad for a basic logoff command:

@echo off
shutdown -l

This is basically the same as clicking start and logoff manually, but it is just slightly faster if you have the batch file ready.

Extracting the last n characters from a string in R

I use substr too, but in a different way. I want to extract the last 6 characters of "Give me your food." Here are the steps:

(1) Split the characters

splits <- strsplit("Give me your food.", split = "")

(2) Extract the last 6 characters

tail(splits[[1]], n=6)

Output:

[1] " " "f" "o" "o" "d" "."

Each of the character can be accessed by splits[[1]][x], where x is 1 to 6.

How to cut an entire line in vim and paste it?

Just three steps.

  3. Go to the place that you want to paste, and press p

How do I tokenize a string in C++?

Many overly complicated suggestions here. Try this simple std::string solution:

using namespace std;

string someText = ...

string::size_type tokenOff = 0, sepOff = tokenOff;
while (sepOff != string::npos)
{
    sepOff = someText.find(' ', sepOff);
    string::size_type tokenLen = (sepOff == string::npos) ? sepOff : sepOff++ - tokenOff;
    string token = someText.substr(tokenOff, tokenLen);
    if (!token.empty())
        /* do something with token */;
    tokenOff = sepOff;
}

Change default global installation directory for node.js modules in Windows?

trying to install global packages into C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs\ gave me Run as Administrator issues, because npm was trying to install into
C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs\node_modules\

to resolve this, change global install directory to C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\npm:

in C:\Users\{username}\, create .npmrc file with contents:

Accept function as parameter in PHP

According to @zombat's answer, it's better to validate the Anonymous Functions first:

function exampleMethod($anonFunc) {
    //execute anonymous function
    if (is_callable($anonFunc)) {
        $anonFunc();
    }
}

Or validate argument type since PHP 5.4.0:

function exampleMethod(callable $anonFunc) {}

How to hide a div element depending on Model value? MVC

What characters are valid for JavaScript variable names?

The accepted answer would rule out a lot of valid identifiers, as far as I can see. Here is a regular expression that I put together which should follow the spec (see chapter 7.6 on identifiers). Created it using RegexBuddy and you can find an export of the explanation at http://samples.geekality.net/js-identifiers.

^[$_\p{L}][$_\p{L}\p{Mn}\p{Mc}\p{Nd}\p{Pc}\u200C\u200D]*+$

In addition, the name cannot be one of the following reserved words.

break, do, instanceof, typeof, case, else, new, var, catch, finally, return, void, continue, for, switch, while, debugger, function, this, with, default, if, throw, delete, in, try, class, enum, extends, super, const, export, import, implements, let, private, public, yield, interface, package, protected, static, null, true, false

Execute PHP scripts within Node.js web server

Take a look here: https://github.com/davidcoallier/node-php

From their read me:

Inline PHP Server Running on Node.js

Be worried, be very worried. The name NodePHP takes its name from the fact that we are effectively turning a nice Node.js server into a FastCGI interface that interacts with PHP-FPM.

This is omega-alpha-super-beta-proof-of-concept but it already runs a few simple scripts. Mostly done for my talks on Node.js for PHP Developers this turns out to be quite an interesting project that we are most likely be going to use with Orchestra when we decide to release our Inline PHP server that allows people to run PHP without Apache, Nginx or any webserver.

Yes this goes against all ideas and concepts of Node.js but the idea is to be able to create a web-server directly from any working directory to allow developers to get going even faster than it was before. No need to create vhosts or server blocks ore modify your /etc/hosts anymore.

How can I get the values of data attributes in JavaScript code?

How to implement an android:background that doesn't stretch?

I had a background image, not big in size, but with weird dimensions - therefore the stretching and bad performance. I made a method with parameters Context, a View and a drawable ID(int) that will match the device screen size. Use this in e.g a Fragments onCreateView to set the background.

public void setBackground(Context context, View view, int drawableId){
    Bitmap bitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(),drawableId);

    bitmap = Bitmap.createScaledBitmap(bitmap, Resources.getSystem().
             getDisplayMetrics().widthPixels,
             Resources.getSystem().getDisplayMetrics().heightPixels,
             true);

    BitmapDrawable bitmapDrawable = new BitmapDrawable(context.getResources(),
                                    bitmap);

    view.setBackground(bitmapDrawable);
}

removing new line character from incoming stream using sed

To remove newlines, use tr:

tr -d '\n'

If you want to replace each newline with a single space:

tr '\n' ' '

The error ba: Event not found is coming from csh, and is due to csh trying to match !ba in your history list. You can escape the ! and write the command:

sed ':a;N;$\!ba;s/\n/ /g' # Suitable for csh only!!

but sed is the wrong tool for this, and you would be better off using a shell that handles quoted strings more reasonably. That is, stop using csh and start using bash.

How to access a value defined in the application.properties file in Spring Boot

follow these steps. 1:- create your configuration class like below you can see

import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Value;

@Configuration
public class YourConfiguration{

    // passing the key which you set in application.properties
    @Value("${userBucket.path}")
    private String userBucket;

   // getting the value from that key which you set in application.properties
    @Bean
    public String getUserBucketPath() {
        return userBucket;
    }
}

2:- when you have a configuration class then inject in the variable from a configuration where you need.

@Component
public class YourService {

    @Autowired
    private String getUserBucketPath;

    // now you have a value in getUserBucketPath varibale automatically.
}

Init method in Spring Controller (annotation version)

How do I split a string in Rust?

There are three simple ways:

  1. By separator:

     s.split("separator")  |  s.split('/')  |  s.split(char::is_numeric)

  2. By whitespace:

     s.split_whitespace()

  3. By newlines:

     s.lines()

  4. By regex: (using regex crate)

     Regex::new(r"\s").unwrap().split("one two three")

The result of each kind is an iterator:

let text = "foo\r\nbar\n\nbaz\n";
let mut lines = text.lines();

assert_eq!(Some("foo"), lines.next());
assert_eq!(Some("bar"), lines.next());
assert_eq!(Some(""), lines.next());
assert_eq!(Some("baz"), lines.next());

assert_eq!(None, lines.next());

Highlight a word with jQuery

You can use the following function to highlight any word in your text.

function color_word(text_id, word, color) {
    words = $('#' + text_id).text().split(' ');
    words = words.map(function(item) { return item == word ? "<span style='color: " + color + "'>" + word + '</span>' : item });
    new_words = words.join(' ');
    $('#' + text_id).html(new_words);
    }

Simply target the element that contains the text, choosing the word to colorize and the color of choice.

Here is an example:

<div id='my_words'>
This is some text to show that it is possible to color a specific word inside a body of text. The idea is to convert the text into an array using the split function, then iterate over each word until the word of interest is identified. Once found, the word of interest can be colored by replacing that element with a span around the word. Finally, replacing the text with jQuery's html() function will produce the desired result.
</div>

Usage,

color_word('my_words', 'possible', 'hotpink')

Pandas read_csv low_memory and dtype options

According to the pandas documentation, specifying low_memory=False as long as the engine='c' (which is the default) is a reasonable solution to this problem.

If low_memory=False, then whole columns will be read in first, and then the proper types determined. For example, the column will be kept as objects (strings) as needed to preserve information.

If low_memory=True (the default), then pandas reads in the data in chunks of rows, then appends them together. Then some of the columns might look like chunks of integers and strings mixed up, depending on whether during the chunk pandas encountered anything that couldn't be cast to integer (say). This could cause problems later. The warning is telling you that this happened at least once in the read in, so you should be careful. Setting low_memory=False will use more memory but will avoid the problem.

Personally, I think low_memory=True is a bad default, but I work in an area that uses many more small datasets than large ones and so convenience is more important than efficiency.

The following code illustrates an example where low_memory=True is set and a column comes in with mixed types. It builds off the answer by @firelynx

import pandas as pd
try:
    from StringIO import StringIO
except ImportError:
    from io import StringIO

# make a big csv data file, following earlier approach by @firelynx
csvdata = """1,Alice
2,Bob
3,Caesar
"""

# we have to replicate the "integer column" user_id many many times to get
# pd.read_csv to actually chunk read. otherwise it just reads
# the whole thing in one chunk, because it's faster, and we don't get any
# "mixed dtype" issue. the 100000 below was chosen by experimentation.
csvdatafull = ""
for i in range(100000):
    csvdatafull = csvdatafull + csvdata
csvdatafull =  csvdatafull + "foobar,Cthlulu\n"
csvdatafull = "user_id,username\n" + csvdatafull

sio = StringIO(csvdatafull)
# the following line gives me the warning:
    # C:\Users\rdisa\anaconda3\lib\site-packages\IPython\core\interactiveshell.py:3072: DtypeWarning: Columns (0) have mixed types.Specify dtype option on import or set low_memory=False.
    # interactivity=interactivity, compiler=compiler, result=result)
# but it does not always give me the warning, so i guess the internal workings of read_csv depend on background factors
x = pd.read_csv(sio, low_memory=True) #, dtype={"user_id": int, "username": "string"})

x.dtypes
# this gives:
# Out[69]:
# user_id     object
# username    object
# dtype: object

type(x['user_id'].iloc[0]) # int
type(x['user_id'].iloc[1]) # int
type(x['user_id'].iloc[2]) # int
type(x['user_id'].iloc[10000]) # int
type(x['user_id'].iloc[299999]) # str !!!! (even though it's a number! so this chunk must have been read in as strings)
type(x['user_id'].iloc[300000]) # str !!!!!

Aside: To give an example where this is a problem (and where I first encountered this as a serious issue), imagine you ran pd.read_csv() on a file then wanted to drop duplicates based on an identifier. Say the identifier is sometimes numeric, sometimes string. One row might be "81287", another might be "97324-32". Still, they are unique identifiers.

With low_memory=True, pandas might read in the identifier column like this:

81287
81287
81287
81287
81287
"81287"
"81287"
"81287"
"81287"
"97324-32"
"97324-32"
"97324-32"
"97324-32"
"97324-32"

Just because it chunks things and so, sometimes the identifier 81287 is a number, sometimes a string. When I try to drop duplicates based on this, well,

81287 == "81287"
Out[98]: False

How to rename a directory/folder on GitHub website?

There is no way to do this in the GitHub web application. I believe to only way to do this is in the command line using git mv <old name> <new name> or by using a Git client(like SourceTree).

How to manually deploy artifacts in Nexus Repository Manager OSS 3

You can upload artifacts via their native publishing capabilities (e.g. maven deploy, npm publish).

You can also upload artifacts to "raw" repositories via a simple curl request, e.g.

curl --fail -u admin:admin123 --upload-file foo.jar 'http://my-nexus-server.com:8081/repository/my-raw-repo/'

SQL Logic Operator Precedence: And and Or

I'll add 2 points:

  • "IN" is effectively serial ORs with parentheses around them
  • AND has precedence over OR in every language I know

So, the 2 expressions are simply not equal.

WHERE some_col in (1,2,3,4,5) AND some_other_expr
--to the optimiser is this
WHERE
     (
     some_col = 1 OR
     some_col = 2 OR
     some_col = 3 OR
     some_col = 4 OR
     some_col = 5
     )
     AND
     some_other_expr

So, when you break the IN clause up, you split the serial ORs up, and changed precedence.

            {
                Console.WriteLine("Volume label: {0}", d.VolumeLabel);
                Console.WriteLine("File system: {0}", d.DriveFormat);

                Console.WriteLine("Total size of drive: {0, 15} bytes \n",d.TotalSize);
                }
                longAvailableFreeSpaceInMB = d.TotalFreeSpace;
        }
    }
    catch(Exception ex){
        ServiceLocator.GetInsightsProvider()?.LogError(ex);
    }
    return longAvailableFreeSpace;
}

How do you get the "object reference" of an object in java when toString() and hashCode() have been overridden?

Double equals == will always check based on object identity, regardless of the objects' implementation of hashCode or equals. Of course - make sure the object references you are comparing are volatile (in a 1.5+ JVM).

If you really must have the original Object toString result (although it's not the best solution for your example use-case), the Commons Lang library has a method ObjectUtils.identityToString(Object) that will do what you want. From the JavaDoc:

public static java.lang.String identityToString(java.lang.Object object)

Gets the toString that would be produced by Object if a class did not override toString itself. null will return null.

 ObjectUtils.identityToString(null)         = null
 ObjectUtils.identityToString("")           = "java.lang.String@1e23"
 ObjectUtils.identityToString(Boolean.TRUE) = "java.lang.Boolean@7fa"

What is the difference between "px", "dip", "dp" and "sp"?

Source 1

Source 2

Source 3: (data from source 3 is given below)

These are dimension values defined in XML. A dimension is specified with a number followed by a unit of measure. For example: 10px, 2in, 5sp. The following units of measure are supported by Android:

dp

Density-independent Pixels - An abstract unit that is based on the physical density of the screen. These units are relative to a 160 dpi (dots per inch) screen, on which 1dp is roughly equal to 1px. When running on a higher density screen, the number of pixels used to draw 1dp is scaled up by a factor appropriate for the screen's dpi. Likewise, when on a lower density screen, the number of pixels used for 1dp is scaled down. The ratio of dp-to-pixel will change with the screen density, but not necessarily in direct proportion. Using dp units (instead of px units) is a simple solution to making the view dimensions in your layout resize properly for different screen densities. In other words, it provides consistency for the real-world sizes of your UI elements across different devices.

sp

Scale-independent Pixels - This is like the dp unit, but it is also scaled by the user's font size preference. It is recommended that you use this unit when specifying font sizes, so they will be adjusted for both the screen density and the user's preference.

pt

Points - 1/72 of an inch based on the physical size of the screen.

px

Pixels - Corresponds to actual pixels on the screen. This unit of measure is not recommended because the actual representation can vary across devices; each devices may have a different number of pixels per inch and may have more or fewer total pixels available on the screen.

mm

Millimeters - Based on the physical size of the screen.

in

Inches - Based on the physical size of the screen.

Note: A dimension is a simple resource that is referenced using the value provided in the name attribute (not the name of the XML file). As such, you can combine dimension resources with other simple resources in the one XML file, under one element.

java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host: 127.0.1.1;

PROBLEM SOLVED

I had exactly the same error. When the remote object got binded to the rmiregistry it was attached with the loopback IP Address which will obviously fail if you try to invoke a method from a remote address. In order to fix this we need to set the java.rmi.server.hostname property to the IP address where other devices can reach your rmiregistry over the network. It doesn't work when you try to set the parameter through the JVM. It worked for me just by adding the following line to my code just before binding the object to the rmiregistry:

System.setProperty("java.rmi.server.hostname","192.168.1.2");

In this case the IP address on the local network of the PC binding the remote object on the RMI Registry is 192.168.1.2.

What is the best way to filter a Java Collection?

Assuming that you are using Java 1.5, and that you cannot add Google Collections, I would do something very similar to what the Google guys did. This is a slight variation on Jon's comments.

First add this interface to your codebase.

public interface IPredicate<T> { boolean apply(T type); }

Its implementers can answer when a certain predicate is true of a certain type. E.g. If T were User and AuthorizedUserPredicate<User> implements IPredicate<T>, then AuthorizedUserPredicate#apply returns whether the passed in User is authorized.

Then in some utility class, you could say

public static <T> Collection<T> filter(Collection<T> target, IPredicate<T> predicate) {
    Collection<T> result = new ArrayList<T>();
    for (T element: target) {
        if (predicate.apply(element)) {
            result.add(element);
        }
    }
    return result;
}

So, assuming that you have the use of the above might be

Predicate<User> isAuthorized = new Predicate<User>() {
    public boolean apply(User user) {
        // binds a boolean method in User to a reference
        return user.isAuthorized();
    }
};
// allUsers is a Collection<User>
Collection<User> authorizedUsers = filter(allUsers, isAuthorized);

If performance on the linear check is of concern, then I might want to have a domain object that has the target collection. The domain object that has the target collection would have filtering logic for the methods that initialize, add and set the target collection.

UPDATE:

In the utility class (let's say Predicate), I have added a select method with an option for default value when the predicate doesn't return the expected value, and also a static property for params to be used inside the new IPredicate.

public class Predicate {
    public static Object predicateParams;

    public static <T> Collection<T> filter(Collection<T> target, IPredicate<T> predicate) {
        Collection<T> result = new ArrayList<T>();
        for (T element : target) {
            if (predicate.apply(element)) {
                result.add(element);
            }
        }
        return result;
    }

    public static <T> T select(Collection<T> target, IPredicate<T> predicate) {
        T result = null;
        for (T element : target) {
            if (!predicate.apply(element))
                continue;
            result = element;
            break;
        }
        return result;
    }

    public static <T> T select(Collection<T> target, IPredicate<T> predicate, T defaultValue) {
        T result = defaultValue;
        for (T element : target) {
            if (!predicate.apply(element))
                continue;
            result = element;
            break;
        }
        return result;
    }
}

The following example looks for missing objects between collections:

List<MyTypeA> missingObjects = (List<MyTypeA>) Predicate.filter(myCollectionOfA,
    new IPredicate<MyTypeA>() {
        public boolean apply(MyTypeA objectOfA) {
            Predicate.predicateParams = objectOfA.getName();
            return Predicate.select(myCollectionB, new IPredicate<MyTypeB>() {
                public boolean apply(MyTypeB objectOfB) {
                    return objectOfB.getName().equals(Predicate.predicateParams.toString());
                }
            }) == null;
        }
    });

The following example, looks for an instance in a collection, and returns the first element of the collection as default value when the instance is not found:

MyType myObject = Predicate.select(collectionOfMyType, new IPredicate<MyType>() {
public boolean apply(MyType objectOfMyType) {
    return objectOfMyType.isDefault();
}}, collectionOfMyType.get(0));

UPDATE (after Java 8 release):

It's been several years since I (Alan) first posted this answer, and I still cannot believe I am collecting SO points for this answer. At any rate, now that Java 8 has introduced closures to the language, my answer would now be considerably different, and simpler. With Java 8, there is no need for a distinct static utility class. So if you want to find the 1st element that matches your predicate.

final UserService userService = ... // perhaps injected IoC
final Optional<UserModel> userOption = userCollection.stream().filter(u -> {
    boolean isAuthorized = userService.isAuthorized(u);
    return isAuthorized;
}).findFirst();

The JDK 8 API for optionals has the ability to get(), isPresent(), orElse(defaultUser), orElseGet(userSupplier) and orElseThrow(exceptionSupplier), as well as other 'monadic' functions such as map, flatMap and filter.

If you want to simply collect all the users which match the predicate, then use the Collectors to terminate the stream in the desired collection.

final UserService userService = ... // perhaps injected IoC
final List<UserModel> userOption = userCollection.stream().filter(u -> {
    boolean isAuthorized = userService.isAuthorized(u);
    return isAuthorized;
}).collect(Collectors.toList());

See here for more examples on how Java 8 streams work.

What is an abstract class in PHP?

Abstract Class
1. Contains an abstract method
2. Cannot be directly initialized
3. Cannot create an object of abstract class
4. Only used for inheritance purposes

Abstract Method
1. Cannot contain a body
2. Cannot be defined as private
3. Child classes must define the methods declared in abstract class

Example Code:

abstract class A {
    public function test1() {
        echo 'Hello World';
    }
    abstract protected function f1();
    abstract public function f2();
    protected function test2(){
        echo 'Hello World test';
    }
}

class B extends A {
    public $a = 'India';
    public function f1() {
        echo "F1 Method Call";
    }
    public function f2() {
        echo "F2 Method Call";
    }
}

$b = new B();
echo $b->test1() . "<br/>";
echo $b->a . "<br/>";
echo $b->test2() . "<br/>";
echo $b->f1() . "<br/>";
echo $b->f2() . "<br/>";

Output:

Hello World
India
Hello World test
F1 Method Call
F2 Method Call

How can I determine the direction of a jQuery scroll event?

Keep it super simple:

jQuery Event Listener Way:

$(window).on('wheel', function(){
  whichDirection(event);
});

Vanilla JavaScript Event Listener Way:

if(window.addEventListener){
  addEventListener('wheel', whichDirection, false);
} else if (window.attachEvent) {
  attachEvent('wheel', whichDirection, false);
}

Function Remains The Same:

function whichDirection(event){
  console.log(event + ' WheelEvent has all kinds of good stuff to work with');
  var scrollDirection = event.deltaY;
  if(scrollDirection === 1){
    console.log('meet me at the club, going down', scrollDirection);
  } else if(scrollDirection === -1) {
    console.log('Going up, on a tuesday', scrollDirection);
  }
}

Elegant solution for line-breaks (PHP)

Well, as with any language there are several ways to do it.

As previous answerers have mentioned, "<br/>" is not a linebreak in the traditional sense, it's an HTML line break. I don't know of a built in PHP constant for this, but you can always define your own:

// Something like this, but call it whatever you like
const HTML_LINEBREAK = "<br/>";

If you're outputting a bunch of lines (from an array of strings for example), you can use it this way:

// Output an array of strings
$myStrings = Array('Line1','Line2','Line3');
echo implode(HTML_LINEBREAK,$myStrings);

However, generally speaking I would say avoid hard coding HTML inside your PHP echo/print statements. If you can keep the HTML outside of the code, it makes things much more flexible and maintainable in the long run.

Get pandas.read_csv to read empty values as empty string instead of nan

I was still confused after reading the other answers and comments. But the answer now seems simpler, so here you go.

Since Pandas version 0.9 (from 2012), you can read your csv with empty cells interpreted as empty strings by simply setting keep_default_na=False:

pd.read_csv('test.csv', keep_default_na=False)

This issue is more clearly explained in

That was fixed on on Aug 19, 2012 for Pandas version 0.9 in

How do I import a CSV file in R?

You would use the read.csv function; for example:

dat = read.csv("spam.csv", header = TRUE)

You can also reference this tutorial for more details.

Note: make sure the .csv file to read is in your working directory (using getwd()) or specify the right path to file. If you want, you can set the current directory using setwd.

How to pass integer from one Activity to another?

It's simple. On the sender side, use Intent.putExtra:

Intent myIntent = new Intent(A.this, B.class);
myIntent.putExtra("intVariableName", intValue);
startActivity(myIntent);

On the receiver side, use Intent.getIntExtra:

 Intent mIntent = getIntent();
 int intValue = mIntent.getIntExtra("intVariableName", 0);

A simple explanation of Naive Bayes Classification

Ram Narasimhan explained the concept very nicely here below is an alternative explanation through the code example of Naive Bayes in action
It uses an example problem from this book on page 351
This is the data set that we will be using
enter image description here
In the above dataset if we give the hypothesis = {"Age":'<=30', "Income":"medium", "Student":'yes' , "Creadit_Rating":'fair'} then what is the probability that he will buy or will not buy a computer.
The code below exactly answers that question.
Just create a file called named new_dataset.csv and paste the following content.

Age,Income,Student,Creadit_Rating,Buys_Computer
<=30,high,no,fair,no
<=30,high,no,excellent,no
31-40,high,no,fair,yes
>40,medium,no,fair,yes
>40,low,yes,fair,yes
>40,low,yes,excellent,no
31-40,low,yes,excellent,yes
<=30,medium,no,fair,no
<=30,low,yes,fair,yes
>40,medium,yes,fair,yes
<=30,medium,yes,excellent,yes
31-40,medium,no,excellent,yes
31-40,high,yes,fair,yes
>40,medium,no,excellent,no

How to determine previous page URL in Angular?

FOR ANGULAR 7+

Actually since Angular 7.2 there is not need to use a service for saving the previous url. You could just use the state object to set the last url before linking to the login page. Here is an example for a login scenario.

@Component({ ... })
class SomePageComponent {
  constructor(private router: Router) {}

  checkLogin() {
    if (!this.auth.loggedIn()) {
      this.router.navigate(['login'], { state: { redirect: this.router.url } });
    }
  }
}
@Component({...})
class LoginComponent {
  constructor(private router: Router) {}

  backToPreviousPage() {
    const { redirect } = window.history.state;

    this.router.navigateByUrl(redirect || '/homepage');
  }
}
----------------

Additionally you could also pass the data in the template:

@Component({
  template: '<a routerLink="/some-route" [state]="{ redirect: router.url}">Go to some route</a>'
})
class SomePageComponent {
  constructor(public router: Router) {}
}

Translating touch events from Javascript to jQuery

.war vs .ear file

war - web archive. It is used to deploy web applications according to the servlet standard. It is a jar file containing a special directory called WEB-INF and several files and directories inside it (web.xml, lib, classes) as well as all the HTML, JSP, images, CSS, JavaScript and other resources of the web application

ear - enterprise archive. It is used to deploy enterprise application containing EJBs, web applications, and 3rd party libraries. It is also a jar file, it has a special directory called APP-INF that contains the application.xml file, and it contains jar and war files.

How to get Tensorflow tensor dimensions (shape) as int values?

for a 2-D tensor, you can get the number of rows and columns as int32 using the following code:

rows, columns = map(lambda i: i.value, tensor.get_shape())

How to round up the result of integer division?

This should give you what you want. You will definitely want x items divided by y items per page, the problem is when uneven numbers come up, so if there is a partial page we also want to add one page.

int x = number_of_items;
int y = items_per_page;

// with out library
int pages = x/y + (x % y > 0 ? 1 : 0)

// with library
int pages = (int)Math.Ceiling((double)x / (double)y);

Select rows with same id but different value in another column

This ought to do it:

SELECT *
FROM YourTable
WHERE ARIDNR IN (
    SELECT ARIDNR
    FROM YourTable
    GROUP BY ARIDNR
    HAVING COUNT(*) > 1
)

The idea is to use the inner query to identify the records which have a ARIDNR value that occurs 1+ times in the data, then get all columns from the same table based on that set of values.

How to simulate a touch event in Android?

Valentin Rocher's method works if you've extended your view, but if you're using an event listener, use this:

view.setOnTouchListener(new OnTouchListener()
{
    public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event)
    {
        Toast toast = Toast.makeText(
            getApplicationContext(),
            "View touched",
            Toast.LENGTH_LONG
        );
        toast.show();

        return true;
    }
});

// Obtain MotionEvent object
long downTime = SystemClock.uptimeMillis();
long eventTime = SystemClock.uptimeMillis() + 100;
float x = 0.0f;
float y = 0.0f;
// List of meta states found here: developer.android.com/reference/android/view/KeyEvent.html#getMetaState()
int metaState = 0;
MotionEvent motionEvent = MotionEvent.obtain(
    downTime,
    eventTime,
    MotionEvent.ACTION_UP,
    x,
    y,
    metaState
);

// Dispatch touch event to view
view.dispatchTouchEvent(motionEvent);

words.reverse()
print ' '.join(words)

Python Decimals format

Just use Python's standard string formatting methods:

>>> "{0:.2}".format(1.234232)
'1.2'
>>> "{0:.3}".format(1.234232)
'1.23'

If you are using a Python version under 2.6, use

>>> "%f" % 1.32423
'1.324230'
>>> "%.2f" % 1.32423
'1.32'
>>> "%d" % 1.32423

NGINX: upstream timed out (110: Connection timed out) while reading response header from upstream

This happens because your upstream takes too much to answer the request and NGINX thinks the upstream already failed in processing the request, so it responds with an error. Just include and increase proxy_read_timeout in location config block. Same thing happened to me and I used 1 hour timeout for an internal app at work:

proxy_read_timeout 3600;

With this, NGINX will wait for an hour (3600s) for its upstream to return something.

foreach ($files as $file) {
  $zip->addFile($file);
}
$zip->close();

and to stream it:

header('Content-Type: application/zip');
header('Content-disposition: attachment; filename='.$zipname);
header('Content-Length: ' . filesize($zipname));
readfile($zipname);

The second line forces the browser to present a download box to the user and prompts the name filename.zip. The third line is optional but certain (mainly older) browsers have issues in certain cases without the content size being specified.

Difference between single and double quotes in Bash

The accepted answer is great. I am making a table that helps in quick comprehension of the topic. The explanation involves a simple variable a as well as an indexed array arr.

If we set

a=apple      # a simple variable
arr=(apple) # an indexed array with a single element

and then echo the expression in the second column, we would get the result / behavior shown in the third column. The fourth column explains the behavior.

# Expression Result Comments
1 "$a" apple variables are expanded inside ""
2 '$a' $a variables are not expanded inside ''
3 "'$a'" 'apple' '' has no special meaning inside ""
4 '"$a"' "$a" "" is treated literally inside ''
5 '\'' invalid can not escape a ' within ''; use "'" or $'\'' (ANSI-C quoting)
6 "red$arocks" red $arocks does not expand $a; use ${a}rocks to preserve $a
7 "redapple$" redapple$ $ followed by no variable name evaluates to $
8 '\"' \" \ has no special meaning inside ''
9 "\'" \' \' is interpreted inside "" but has no significance for '
10 "\"" " \" is interpreted inside ""
11 "*" * glob does not work inside "" or ''
12 "\t\n" \t\n \t and \n have no special meaning inside "" or ''; use ANSI-C quoting
13 "`echo hi`" hi `` and $() are evaluated inside "" (backquotes are retained in actual output)
14 '`echo hi`' echo hi `` and $() are not evaluated inside '' (backquotes are retained in actual output)
15 '${arr[0]}' ${arr[0]} array access not possible inside ''
16 "${arr[0]}" apple array access works inside ""
17 $'$a\'' $a' single quotes can be escaped inside ANSI-C quoting
18 "$'\t'" $'\t' ANSI-C quoting is not interpreted inside ""
19 '!cmd' !cmd history expansion character '!' is ignored inside ''
20 "!cmd" cmd args expands to the most recent command matching "cmd"
21 $'!cmd' !cmd history expansion character '!' is ignored inside ANSI-C quotes

Why should I use an IDE?

It depends highly on what you're doing and what language you're doing it in. Personally, I tend to not use an IDE (or "my IDE consists of 3 xterms running vim, one running a database client, and one with a bash prompt or tailing logs", depending on how broadly you define "IDE") for most of my work, but, if I were to find myself developing a platform-native GUI, then I'd reach for a language-appropriate IDE in an instant - IMO, IDEs and graphical form editing are clearly made for each other.

Ignoring SSL certificate in Apache HttpClient 4.3

Simpler and shorter working code:

We are using HTTPClient 4.3.5 and we tried almost all solutions exist on the stackoverflow but nothing, After thinking and figuring out the problem, we come to the following code which works perfectly, just add it before creating HttpClient instance.

some method which you use to make post request...

SSLContextBuilder builder = new SSLContextBuilder();
    builder.loadTrustMaterial(null, new TrustStrategy() {
        @Override
        public boolean isTrusted(X509Certificate[] chain, String authType) throws CertificateException {
            return true;
        }
    });

    SSLConnectionSocketFactory sslSF = new SSLConnectionSocketFactory(builder.build(),
            SSLConnectionSocketFactory.ALLOW_ALL_HOSTNAME_VERIFIER);

    HttpClient httpClient = HttpClients.custom().setSSLSocketFactory(sslSF).build();
    HttpPost postRequest = new HttpPost(url);

continue calling and using HttpPost instance in the normal form

Example of waitpid() in use?

The syntax is

pid_t waitpid(pid_t pid, int *statusPtr, int options);

1.where pid is the process of the child it should wait.

2.statusPtr is a pointer to the location where status information for the terminating process is to be stored.

3.specifies optional actions for the waitpid function. Either of the following option flags may be specified, or they can be combined with a bitwise inclusive OR operator:

WNOHANG WUNTRACED WCONTINUED

If successful, waitpid returns the process ID of the terminated process whose status was reported. If unsuccessful, a -1 is returned.

benifits over wait

1.Waitpid can used when you have more than one child for the process and you want to wait for particular child to get its execution done before parent resumes

2.waitpid supports job control

3.it supports non blocking of the parent process

Convert a string to a double - is this possible?

Just use floatval().

E.g.:

$var = '122.34343';
$float_value_of_var = floatval($var);
echo $float_value_of_var; // 122.34343

And in case you wonder doubleval() is just an alias for floatval().

And as the other say, in a financial application, float values are critical as these are not precise enough. E.g. adding two floats could result in something like 12.30000000001 and this error could propagate.

Read next word in java

You do not necessarily have to split the line because java.util.Scanner's default delimiter is whitespace.

You can just create a new Scanner object within your while statement.

    Scanner sc2 = null;
    try {
        sc2 = new Scanner(new File("translate.txt"));
    } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    }
    while (sc2.hasNextLine()) {
            Scanner s2 = new Scanner(sc2.nextLine());
        while (s2.hasNext()) {
            String s = s2.next();
            System.out.println(s);
        }
    }

Remove element by id

element.remove()

The DOM is organized in a tree of nodes, where each node has a value, along with a list of references to its child nodes. So element.parentNode.removeChild(element) mimics exactly what is happening internally: First you go the parent node, then remove the reference to the child node.

As of DOM4, a helper function is provided to do the same thing: element.remove(). This works in 96% of browsers (as of 2020), but not IE 11. If you need to support older browsers, you can:

Object passed as parameter to another class, by value or reference?

"Objects" are NEVER passed in C# -- "objects" are not values in the language. The only types in the language are primitive types, struct types, etc. and reference types. No "object types".

The types Object, MyClass, etc. are reference types. Their values are "references" -- pointers to objects. Objects can only be manipulated through references -- when you do new on them, you get a reference, the . operator operates on a reference; etc. There is no way to get a variable whose value "is" an object, because there are no object types.

All types, including reference types, can be passed by value or by reference. A parameter is passed by reference if it has a keyword like ref or out. The SetObject method's obj parameter (which is of a reference type) does not have such a keyword, so it is passed by value -- the reference is passed by value.

Command prompt won't change directory to another drive

Use drive letter d for changing to D drive like:

  C:\> d:

When changing drives, you just need to type the drive letter, like d: (don't use the backslash, like d:\; it doesn't work).

You only use cd when moving between directories within the same drive.

Concatenate chars to form String in java

You can use StringBuilder:

    StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
    sb.append('a');
    sb.append('b');
    sb.append('c');
    String str = sb.toString()

Or if you already have the characters, you can pass a character array to the String constructor:

String str = new String(new char[]{'a', 'b', 'c'});

Calculate number of hours between 2 dates in PHP

How can I convert String to Int?

using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Data;
using System.Drawing;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Windows.Forms;

namespace example_string_to_int

    {
        public Form1()
        {
            InitializeComponent();
        }

        private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            string a = textBox1.Text;
            // This turns the text in text box 1 into a string
            int b;
            if (!int.TryParse(a, out b))
            {
                MessageBox.Show("This is not a number");
            }
            else
            {
                textBox2.Text = a+" is a number" ;
            }
            // Then this 'if' statement says if the string is not a number, display an error, else now you will have an integer.
        }
    }
}

This is how I would do it.

Change Date Format(DD/MM/YYYY) in SQL SELECT Statement

You will want to use a CONVERT() statement.

Try the following;

SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), SA.[RequestStartDate], 103) as 'Service Start Date', CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), SA.[RequestEndDate], 103) as 'Service End Date', FROM (......) SA WHERE.....

Log all requests from the python-requests module

When trying to get the Python logging system (import logging) to emit low level debug log messages, it suprised me to discover that given:

requests --> urllib3 --> http.client.HTTPConnection

that only urllib3 actually uses the Python logging system:

  • requests no
  • http.client.HTTPConnection no
  • urllib3 yes

Sure, you can extract debug messages from HTTPConnection by setting:

HTTPConnection.debuglevel = 1

but these outputs are merely emitted via the print statement. To prove this, simply grep the Python 3.7 client.py source code and view the print statements yourself (thanks @Yohann):

curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/python/cpython/3.7/Lib/http/client.py |grep -A1 debuglevel`

Presumably redirecting stdout in some way might work to shoe-horn stdout into the logging system and potentially capture to e.g. a log file.

Choose the 'urllib3' logger not 'requests.packages.urllib3'

To capture urllib3 debug information through the Python 3 logging system, contrary to much advice on the internet, and as @MikeSmith points out, you won’t have much luck intercepting:

log = logging.getLogger('requests.packages.urllib3')

instead you need to:

log = logging.getLogger('urllib3')

Debugging urllib3 to a log file

Here is some code which logs urllib3 workings to a log file using the Python logging system:

import requests
import logging
from http.client import HTTPConnection  # py3

# log = logging.getLogger('requests.packages.urllib3')  # useless
log = logging.getLogger('urllib3')  # works

log.setLevel(logging.DEBUG)  # needed
fh = logging.FileHandler("requests.log")
log.addHandler(fh)

requests.get('http://httpbin.org/')

the result:

Starting new HTTP connection (1): httpbin.org:80
http://httpbin.org:80 "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 3168

Enabling the HTTPConnection.debuglevel print() statements

If you set HTTPConnection.debuglevel = 1

from http.client import HTTPConnection  # py3
HTTPConnection.debuglevel = 1
requests.get('http://httpbin.org/')

you'll get the print statement output of additional juicy low level info:

send: b'GET / HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: httpbin.org\r\nUser-Agent: python-
requests/2.22.0\r\nAccept-Encoding: gzip, deflate\r\nAccept: */*\r\nConnection: keep-alive\r\n\r\n'
reply: 'HTTP/1.1 200 OK\r\n'
header: Access-Control-Allow-Credentials header: Access-Control-Allow-Origin
header: Content-Encoding header: Content-Type header: Date header: ...

Remember this output uses print and not the Python logging system, and thus cannot be captured using a traditional logging stream or file handler (though it may be possible to capture output to a file by redirecting stdout).

Combine the two above - maximise all possible logging to console

To maximise all possible logging, you must settle for console/stdout output with this:

import requests
import logging
from http.client import HTTPConnection  # py3

log = logging.getLogger('urllib3')
log.setLevel(logging.DEBUG)

# logging from urllib3 to console
ch = logging.StreamHandler()
ch.setLevel(logging.DEBUG)
log.addHandler(ch)

# print statements from `http.client.HTTPConnection` to console/stdout
HTTPConnection.debuglevel = 1

requests.get('http://httpbin.org/')

giving the full range of output:

Starting new HTTP connection (1): httpbin.org:80
send: b'GET / HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: httpbin.org\r\nUser-Agent: python-requests/2.22.0\r\nAccept-Encoding: gzip, deflate\r\nAccept: */*\r\nConnection: keep-alive\r\n\r\n'
reply: 'HTTP/1.1 200 OK\r\n'
http://httpbin.org:80 "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 3168
header: Access-Control-Allow-Credentials header: Access-Control-Allow-Origin
header: Content-Encoding header: ...

Saving images in Python at a very high quality

If you are using Matplotlib and are trying to get good figures in a LaTeX document, save as an EPS. Specifically, try something like this after running the commands to plot the image:

plt.savefig('destination_path.eps', format='eps')

I have found that EPS files work best and the dpi parameter is what really makes them look good in a document.

To specify the orientation of the figure before saving, simply call the following before the plt.savefig call, but after creating the plot (assuming you have plotted using an axes with the name ax):

ax.view_init(elev=elevation_angle, azim=azimuthal_angle)

Where elevation_angle is a number (in degrees) specifying the polar angle (down from vertical z axis) and the azimuthal_angle specifies the azimuthal angle (around the z axis).

I find that it is easiest to determine these values by first plotting the image and then rotating it and watching the current values of the angles appear towards the bottom of the window just below the actual plot. Keep in mind that the x, y, z, positions appear by default, but they are replaced with the two angles when you start to click+drag+rotate the image.

Why do we have to normalize the input for an artificial neural network?

When you use unnormalized input features, the loss function is likely to have very elongated valleys. When optimizing with gradient descent, this becomes an issue because the gradient will be steep with respect some of the parameters. That leads to large oscillations in the search space, as you are bouncing between steep slopes. To compensate, you have to stabilize optimization with small learning rates.

Consider features x1 and x2, where range from 0 to 1 and 0 to 1 million, respectively. It turns out the ratios for the corresponding parameters (say, w1 and w2) will also be large.

Normalizing tends to make the loss function more symmetrical/spherical. These are easier to optimize because the gradients tend to point towards the global minimum and you can take larger steps.

LIKE operator in LINQ

Regex? no. But for that query you can just use:

 string filter = "BALTIMORE";
 (blah) .Where(row => row.PortName.Contains(filter)) (blah)

If you really want SQL LIKE, you can use System.Data.Linq.SqlClient.SqlMethods.Like(...), which LINQ-to-SQL maps to LIKE in SQL Server.

The operation cannot be completed because the DbContext has been disposed error

Change this:

using (var dataContext = new dataContext())
{
    users = dataContext.Users.Where(x => x.AccountID == accountId && x.IsAdmin == false);

    if(users.Any())
    {
        ret = users.Select(x => x.ToInfo()).ToList();
    }

 }

to this:

using (var dataContext = new dataContext())
{
    return = dataContext.Users.Where(x => x.AccountID == accountId && x.IsAdmin == false).Select(x => x.ToInfo()).ToList();
}

The gist is that you only want to force the enumeration of the context dataset once. Let the caller deal with empty set scenario, as they should.

How is Docker different from a virtual machine?

With a virtual machine, we have a server, we have a host operating system on that server, and then we have a hypervisor. And then running on top of that hypervisor, we have any number of guest operating systems with an application and its dependent binaries, and libraries on that server. It brings a whole guest operating system with it. It's quite heavyweight. Also there's a limit to how much you can actually put on each physical machine.

Enter image description here

Docker containers on the other hand, are slightly different. We have the server. We have the host operating system. But instead a hypervisor, we have the Docker engine, in this case. In this case, we're not bringing a whole guest operating system with us. We're bringing a very thin layer of the operating system, and the container can talk down into the host OS in order to get to the kernel functionality there. And that allows us to have a very lightweight container.

All it has in there is the application code and any binaries and libraries that it requires. And those binaries and libraries can actually be shared across different containers if you want them to be as well. And what this enables us to do, is a number of things. They have much faster startup time. You can't stand up a single VM in a few seconds like that. And equally, taking them down as quickly.. so we can scale up and down very quickly and we'll look at that later on.

Enter image description here

Every container thinks that it’s running on its own copy of the operating system. It’s got its own file system, own registry, etc. which is a kind of a lie. It’s actually being virtualized.
