Java converting Image to BufferedImage

If you are getting back a sun.awt.image.ToolkitImage, you can cast the Image to that, and then use getBufferedImage() to get the BufferedImage.

So instead of your last line of code where you are casting you would just do:

BufferedImage buffered = ((ToolkitImage) image).getBufferedImage();

Filter an array using a formula (without VBA)

Today, in Office 365, Excel has so called 'array functions'. The filter function does exactly what you want. No need to use CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER anymore, a simple enter will suffice.

In Office 365, your problem would be simply solved by using:

=VLOOKUP(A3, FILTER(A2:C6, B2:B6="B"), 3, FALSE)

How do I multiply each element in a list by a number?

With map (not as good, but another approach to the problem):

list(map(lambda x: x*5,[5, 10, 15, 20, 25]))

also, if you happen to be using numpy or numpy arrays, you could use this:

import numpy as np
list(np.array(x) * 5)

How to send Request payload to REST API in java?

I tried with a rest client.

Headers :

  • POST /r/gerrit/rpc/ChangeDetailService HTTP/1.1
  • Host: git.eclipse.org
  • User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/18.0
  • Accept: application/json
  • Accept-Language: null
  • Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate,sdch
  • accept-charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.3
  • Content-Type: application/json; charset=UTF-8
  • Content-Length: 73
  • Connection: keep-alive

it works fine. I retrieve 200 OK with a good body.

Why do you set a status code in your request? and multiple declaration "Accept" with Accept:application/json,application/json,application/jsonrequest. just a statement is enough.

Try-catch block in Jenkins pipeline script

Look up the AbortException class for Jenkins. You should be able to use the methods to get back simple messages or stack traces. In a simple case, when making a call in a script block (as others have indicated), you can call getMessage() to get the string to echo to the user. Example:

script {
        try {
            sh "sudo docker rmi frontend-test"
        } catch (err) {
            echo err.getMessage()
            echo "Error detected, but we will continue."
        }
        ...continue with other code...
}

You can also use

re.findall(r"\[([A-Za-z0-9_]+)\]", string)

if there are many occurrences that you would like to find.

Single-threaded apartment - cannot instantiate ActiveX control

The problem you're running into is that most background thread / worker APIs will create the thread in a Multithreaded Apartment state. The error message indicates that the control requires the thread be a Single Threaded Apartment.

You can work around this by creating a thread yourself and specifying the STA apartment state on the thread.

var t = new Thread(MyThreadStartMethod);
t.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA);
t.Start();

Limit String Length

In Laravel, there is a string util function for this, and it is implemented this way:

public static function limit($value, $limit = 100, $end = '...')
{
    if (mb_strwidth($value, 'UTF-8') <= $limit) {
        return $value;
    }

    return rtrim(mb_strimwidth($value, 0, $limit, '', 'UTF-8')).$end;
}

Powershell: How can I stop errors from being displayed in a script?

You have a couple of options. The easiest involve using the ErrorAction settings.

-Erroraction is a universal parameter for all cmdlets. If there are special commands you want to ignore you can use -erroraction 'silentlycontinue' which will basically ignore all error messages generated by that command. You can also use the Ignore value (in PowerShell 3+):

Unlike SilentlyContinue, Ignore does not add the error message to the $Error automatic variable.

If you want to ignore all errors in a script, you can use the system variable $ErrorActionPreference and do the same thing: $ErrorActionPreference= 'silentlycontinue'

See about_CommonParameters for more info about -ErrorAction. See about_preference_variables for more info about $ErrorActionPreference.

Types in MySQL: BigInt(20) vs Int(20)

I wanted to add one more point is, if you are storing a really large number like 902054990011312 then one can easily see the difference of INT(20) and BIGINT(20). It is advisable to store in BIGINT.

count of entries in data frame in R

I think of this as a two-step process:

  1. subset the original data frame according to the filter supplied (Believe==FALSE); then

  2. get the row count of this subset

For the first step, the subset function is a good way to do this (just an alternative to ordinary index or bracket notation).

For the second step, i would use dim or nrow

One advantage of using subset: you don't have to parse the result it returns to get the result you need--just call nrow on it directly.

so in your case:

v = nrow(subset(Santa, Believe==FALSE))     # 'subset' returns a data.frame

or wrapped in an anonymous function:

>> fnx = function(fac, lev){nrow(subset(Santa, fac==lev))}

>> fnx(Believe, TRUE)
      3

Aside from nrow, dim will also do the job. This function returns the dimensions of a data frame (rows, cols) so you just need to supply the appropriate index to access the number of rows:

v = dim(subset(Santa, Believe==FALSE))[1]

An answer to the OP posted before this one shows the use of a contingency table. I don't like that approach for the general problem as recited in the OP. Here's the reason. Granted, the general problem of how many rows in this data frame have value x in column C? can be answered using a contingency table as well as using a "filtering" scheme (as in my answer here). If you want row counts for all values for a given factor variable (column) then a contingency table (via calling table and passing in the column(s) of interest) is the most sensible solution; however, the OP asks for the count of a particular value in a factor variable, not counts across all values. Aside from the performance hit (might be big, might be trivial, just depends on the size of the data frame and the processing pipeline context in which this function resides). And of course once the result from the call to table is returned, you still have to parse from that result just the count that you want.

So that's why, to me, this is a filtering rather than a cross-tab problem.

Handling MySQL datetimes and timestamps in Java

The MySQL documentation has information on mapping MySQL types to Java types. In general, for MySQL datetime and timestamps you should use java.sql.Timestamp. A few resources include:

EDIT:

As others have indicated, the suggestion of using strings may lead to issues.

Pad a number with leading zeros in JavaScript

This is not really 'slick' but it's faster to do integer operations than to do string concatenations for each padding 0.

function ZeroPadNumber ( nValue )
{
    if ( nValue < 10 )
    {
        return ( '000' + nValue.toString () );
    }
    else if ( nValue < 100 )
    {
        return ( '00' + nValue.toString () );
    }
    else if ( nValue < 1000 )
    {
        return ( '0' + nValue.toString () );
    }
    else
    {
        return ( nValue );
    }
}

This function is also hardcoded to your particular need (4 digit padding), so it's not generic.

Rollback to last git commit

If you want to remove newly added contents and files which are already staged (so added to the index) then you use:

git reset --hard

If you want to remove also your latest commit (is the one with the message "blah") then better to use:

git reset --hard HEAD^

To remove the untracked files (so new files not yet added to the index) and folders use:

git clean --force -d

PHP compare two arrays and get the matched values not the difference

I think the better answer for this questions is

array_diff()

because it Compares array against one or more other arrays and returns the values in array that are not present in any of the other arrays.

Whereas

array_intersect() returns an array containing all the values of array that are present in all the arguments. Note that keys are preserved.

Fragment onCreateView and onActivityCreated called twice

The two upvoted answers here show solutions for an Activity with navigation mode NAVIGATION_MODE_TABS, but I had the same issue with a NAVIGATION_MODE_LIST. It caused my Fragments to inexplicably lose their state when the screen orientation changed, which was really annoying. Thankfully, due to their helpful code I managed to figure it out.

Basically, when using a list navigation, ``onNavigationItemSelected()is automatically called when your activity is created/re-created, whether you like it or not. To prevent your Fragment'sonCreateView()from being called twice, this initial automatic call toonNavigationItemSelected()should check whether the Fragment is already in existence inside your Activity. If it is, return immediately, because there is nothing to do; if it isn't, then simply construct the Fragment and add it to the Activity like you normally would. Performing this check prevents your Fragment from needlessly being created again, which is what causesonCreateView()` to be called twice!

See my onNavigationItemSelected() implementation below.

public class MyActivity extends FragmentActivity implements ActionBar.OnNavigationListener
{
    private static final String STATE_SELECTED_NAVIGATION_ITEM = "selected_navigation_item";

    private boolean mIsUserInitiatedNavItemSelection;

    // ... constructor code, etc.

    @Override
    public void onRestoreInstanceState(Bundle savedInstanceState)
    {
        super.onRestoreInstanceState(savedInstanceState);

        if (savedInstanceState.containsKey(STATE_SELECTED_NAVIGATION_ITEM))
        {
            getActionBar().setSelectedNavigationItem(savedInstanceState.getInt(STATE_SELECTED_NAVIGATION_ITEM));
        }
    }

    @Override
    public void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState)
    {
        outState.putInt(STATE_SELECTED_NAVIGATION_ITEM, getActionBar().getSelectedNavigationIndex());

        super.onSaveInstanceState(outState);
    }

    @Override
    public boolean onNavigationItemSelected(int position, long id)
    {
        Fragment fragment;
        switch (position)
        {
            // ... choose and construct fragment here
        }

        // is this the automatic (non-user initiated) call to onNavigationItemSelected()
        // that occurs when the activity is created/re-created?
        if (!mIsUserInitiatedNavItemSelection)
        {
            // all subsequent calls to onNavigationItemSelected() won't be automatic
            mIsUserInitiatedNavItemSelection = true;

            // has the same fragment already replaced the container and assumed its id?
            Fragment existingFragment = getSupportFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.container);
            if (existingFragment != null && existingFragment.getClass().equals(fragment.getClass()))
            {
                return true; //nothing to do, because the fragment is already there
            }
        }

        getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction().replace(R.id.container, fragment).commit();
        return true;
    }
}

I borrowed inspiration for this solution from here.

How to create Gmail filter searching for text only at start of subject line?

Regex is not on the list of search features, and it was on (more or less, as Better message search functionality (i.e. Wildcard and partial word search)) the list of pre-canned feature requests, so the answer is "you cannot do this via the Gmail web UI" :-(

There are no current Labs features which offer this. SIEVE filters would be another way to do this, that too was not supported, there seems to no longer be any definitive statement on SIEVE support in the Gmail help.

Updated for link rot The pre-canned list of feature requests was, er canned, the original is on archive.org dated 2012, now you just get redirected to a dumbed down page telling you how to give feedback. Lack of SIEVE support was covered in answer 78761 Does Gmail support all IMAP features?, since some time in 2015 that answer silently redirects to the answer about IMAP client configuration, archive.org has a copy dated 2014.

With the current search facility brackets of any form () {} [] are used for grouping, they have no observable effect if there's just one term within. Using (aaa|bbb) and [aaa|bbb] are equivalent and will both find words aaa or bbb. Most other punctuation characters, including \, are treated as a space or a word-separator, + - : and " do have special meaning though, see the help.

As of 2016, only the form "{term1 term2}" is documented for this, and is equivalent to the search "term1 OR term2".

You can do regex searches on your mailbox (within limits) programmatically via Google docs: http://www.labnol.org/internet/advanced-gmail-search/21623/ has source showing how it can be done (copy the document, then Tools > Script Editor to get the complete source).

You could also do this via IMAP as described here: Python IMAP search for partial subject and script something to move messages to different folder. The IMAP SEARCH verb only supports substrings, not regex (Gmail search is further limited to complete words, not substrings), further processing of the matches to apply a regex would be needed.

For completeness, one last workaround is: Gmail supports plus addressing, if you can change the destination address to [email protected] it will still be sent to your mailbox where you can filter by recipient address. Make sure to filter using the full email address to:[email protected]. This is of course more or less the same thing as setting up a dedicated Gmail address for this purpose :-)

Using Environment Variables with Vue.js

Important (in Vue 4 and likely Vue 3+ as well!): I set VUE_APP_VAR but could NOT see it by console logging process and opening the env object. I could see it by logging or referencing process.env.VUE_APP_VAR. I'm not sure why this is but be aware that you have to access the variable directly!

Setting environment variable in react-native?

you can also have different env scripts: production.env.sh development.env.sh production.env.sh

And then source them in when starting to work [which is just tied to an alias] so all the sh file has is export for each env variable:

export SOME_VAR=1234
export SOME_OTHER=abc

And then adding babel-plugin-transform-inline-environment-variables will allow access them in the code:

export const SOME_VAR: ?string = process.env.SOME_VAR;
export const SOME_OTHER: ?string = process.env.SOME_OTHER;

Best way to serialize/unserialize objects in JavaScript?

I wrote serialijse because I faced the same problem as you.

you can find it at https://github.com/erossignon/serialijse

It can be used in nodejs or in a browser and can serve to serialize and deserialize a complex set of objects from one context (nodejs) to the other (browser) or vice-versa.

var s = require("serialijse");

var assert = require("assert");

// testing serialization of a simple javascript object with date
function testing_javascript_serialization_object_with_date() {

    var o = {
        date: new Date(),
        name: "foo"
    };
    console.log(o.name, o.date.toISOString());

    // JSON will fail as JSON doesn't preserve dates
    try {
        var jstr = JSON.stringify(o);
        var jo = JSON.parse(jstr);
        console.log(jo.name, jo.date.toISOString());
    } catch (err) {
        console.log(" JSON has failed to preserve Date during stringify/parse ");
        console.log("  and has generated the following error message", err.message);
    }
    console.log("");

    var str = s.serialize(o);
    var so = s.deserialize(str);
    console.log(" However Serialijse knows how to preserve date during serialization/deserialization :");
    console.log(so.name, so.date.toISOString());
    console.log("");
}
testing_javascript_serialization_object_with_date();

How to uninstall Eclipse?

The steps are very simple and it'll take just few mins. 1.Go to your C drive and in that go to the 'USER' section. 2.Under 'USER' section go to your 'name(e.g-'user1') and then find ".eclipse" folder and delete that folder 3.Along with that folder also delete "eclipse" folder and you can find that you're work has been done completely.

How to find and replace all occurrences of a string recursively in a directory tree?

On macOS, none of the answers worked for me. I discovered that was due to differences in how sed works on macOS and other BSD systems compared to GNU.

In particular BSD sed takes the -i option but requires a suffix for the backup (but an empty suffix is permitted)

grep version from this answer.

grep -rl 'foo' ./ | LC_ALL=C xargs sed -i '' 's/foo/bar/g'

find version from this answer.

find . \( ! -regex '.*/\..*' \) -type f | LC_ALL=C xargs sed -i '' 's/foo/bar/g'

Don't omit the Regex to ignore . folders if you're in a Git repo. I realized that the hard way!

That LC_ALL=C option is to avoid getting sed: RE error: illegal byte sequence if sed finds a byte sequence that is not a valid UTF-8 character. That's another difference between BSD and GNU. Depending on the kind of files you are dealing with, you may not need it.

For some reason that is not clear to me, the grep version found more occurrences than the find one, which is why I recommend to use grep.

How can I convert a cv::Mat to a gray scale in OpenCv?

Using the C++ API, the function name has slightly changed and it writes now:

#include <opencv2/imgproc/imgproc.hpp>

cv::Mat greyMat, colorMat;
cv::cvtColor(colorMat, greyMat, CV_BGR2GRAY);

The main difficulties are that the function is in the imgproc module (not in the core), and by default cv::Mat are in the Blue Green Red (BGR) order instead of the more common RGB.

OpenCV 3

Starting with OpenCV 3.0, there is yet another convention. Conversion codes are embedded in the namespace cv:: and are prefixed with COLOR. So, the example becomes then:

#include <opencv2/imgproc/imgproc.hpp>

cv::Mat greyMat, colorMat;
cv::cvtColor(colorMat, greyMat, cv::COLOR_BGR2GRAY);

As far as I have seen, the included file path hasn't changed (this is not a typo).

How to open in default browser in C#

You can just write

System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("http://google.com");

EDIT: The WebBrowser control is an embedded copy of IE.
Therefore, any links inside of it will open in IE.

To change this behavior, you can handle the Navigating event.

How can I group by date time column without taking time into consideration

GROUP BY DATEADD(day, DATEDIFF(day, 0, MyDateTimeColumn), 0)

Or in SQL Server 2008 onwards you could simply cast to Date as @Oded suggested:

GROUP BY CAST(orderDate AS DATE)

Differences between TCP sockets and web sockets, one more time

When you send bytes from a buffer with a normal TCP socket, the send function returns the number of bytes of the buffer that were sent. If it is a non-blocking socket or a non-blocking send then the number of bytes sent may be less than the size of the buffer. If it is a blocking socket or blocking send, then the number returned will match the size of the buffer but the call may block. With WebSockets, the data that is passed to the send method is always either sent as a whole "message" or not at all. Also, browser WebSocket implementations do not block on the send call.

But there are more important differences on the receiving side of things. When the receiver does a recv (or read) on a TCP socket, there is no guarantee that the number of bytes returned corresponds to a single send (or write) on the sender side. It might be the same, it may be less (or zero) and it might even be more (in which case bytes from multiple send/writes are received). With WebSockets, the recipient of a message is event-driven (you generally register a message handler routine), and the data in the event is always the entire message that the other side sent.

Note that you can do message based communication using TCP sockets, but you need some extra layer/encapsulation that is adding framing/message boundary data to the messages so that the original messages can be re-assembled from the pieces. In fact, WebSockets is built on normal TCP sockets and uses frame headers that contains the size of each frame and indicate which frames are part of a message. The WebSocket API re-assembles the TCP chunks of data into frames which are assembled into messages before invoking the message event handler once per message.

Initializing a member array in constructor initializer

  1. No, unfortunately.
  2. You just can't in the way you want, as it's not allowed by the grammar (more below). You can only use ctor-like initialization, and, as you know, that's not available for initializing each item in arrays.
  3. I believe so, as they generalize initialization across the board in many useful ways. But I'm not sure on the details.

In C++03, aggregate initialization only applies with syntax similar as below, which must be a separate statement and doesn't fit in a ctor initializer.

T var = {...};

How to call Stored Procedure in Entity Framework 6 (Code-First)?

Create Procedure in MYsql.

have a look at example 3 from http://www.php.net/manual/en/language.oop5.basic.php

$className = 'Foo';
$instance = new $className(); // Foo()

Alternatively, you can use np.shape(...)

For instance:

import numpy as np

a=[1,2,3]

and np.shape(a) will give an output of (3,)

Prevent HTML5 video from being downloaded (right-click saved)?

It seems like streaming the video through websocket is a viable option, as in stream the frames and draw them on a canvas sort of thing.

Video streaming over websockets using JavaScript

I think that would provide another level of protection making it more difficult for the client to acquire the video and of course solve your problem with "Save video as..." right-click context menu option ( overkill ?! ).

How do I convert between ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8 in Java?

        -moz-transform: translate3d(0,0,0);
         -ms-transform: translate3d(0,0,0);
          -o-transform: translate3d(0,0,0);
             transform: translate3d(0,0,0);

Basic CSS - how to overlay a DIV with semi-transparent DIV on top

Like the answer previous, but I'd put ::before, just for stacking purposes. If you want to include text over the overlay (a common use case), using ::before will should fix that.

.dimmed {
  position: relative;
}

.dimmed:before {
  content: " ";
  z-index: 10;
  display: block;
  position: absolute;
  height: 100%;
  top: 0;
  left: 0;
  right: 0;
  background: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5);
}

in your TEMPLATE_CONTEXT_PROCESSORS.

How can I return camelCase JSON serialized by JSON.NET from ASP.NET MVC controller methods?

Simpler is better IMO!

Why don't you do this?

public class CourseController : JsonController
{
    public ActionResult ManageCoursesModel()
    {
        return JsonContent(<somedata>);
    }
}

The simple base class controller

public class JsonController : BaseController
{
    protected ContentResult JsonContent(Object data)
    {
        return new ContentResult
        {
            ContentType = "application/json",
             Content = JsonConvert.SerializeObject(data, new JsonSerializerSettings {
              ContractResolver = new CamelCasePropertyNamesContractResolver() }),
            ContentEncoding = Encoding.UTF8
        };
    }
}

JavaFX How to set scene background image

One of the approaches may be like this:

1) Create a CSS file with name "style.css" and define an id selector in it:

#pane{
    -fx-background-image: url("background_image.jpg");
    -fx-background-repeat: stretch;
    -fx-background-size: 900 506;
    -fx-background-position: center center;
    -fx-effect: dropshadow(three-pass-box, black, 30, 0.5, 0, 0);
}

2) Set the id of the most top control (or any control) in the scene with value defined in CSS and load this CSS file into the scene:

  public class Test extends Application {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        launch(args);
    }

    @Override
    public void start(Stage primaryStage) {
        StackPane root = new StackPane();
        root.setId("pane");
        Scene scene = new Scene(root, 300, 250);
        scene.getStylesheets().addAll(this.getClass().getResource("style.css").toExternalForm());
        primaryStage.setScene(scene);
        primaryStage.show();
    }
}

You can also give an id to the control in a FXML file:

<StackPane id="pane" prefHeight="200" prefWidth="320" xmlns:fx="http://javafx.com/fxml" fx:controller="demo.Sample">
    <children>
    </children>
</StackPane>

Can I specify multiple users for myself in .gitconfig?

Get unicode value of a character

If you have Java 5, use char c = ...; String s = String.format ("\\u%04x", (int)c);

If your source isn't a Unicode character (char) but a String, you must use charAt(index) to get the Unicode character at position index.

Don't use codePointAt(index) because that will return 24bit values (full Unicode) which can't be represented with just 4 hex digits (it needs 6). See the docs for an explanation.

[EDIT] To make it clear: This answer doesn't use Unicode but the method which Java uses to represent Unicode characters (i.e. surrogate pairs) since char is 16bit and Unicode is 24bit. The question should be: "How can I convert char to a 4-digit hex number", since it's not (really) about Unicode.

How to convert an array to object in PHP?

Actually if you want to use this with multi-dimensional arrays you would want to use some recursion.

static public function array_to_object(array $array)
{
    foreach($array as $key => $value)
    {
        if(is_array($value))
        {
            $array[$key] = self::array_to_object($value);
        }
    }
    return (object)$array;
}

Asserting successive calls to a mock method

assert_has_calls is another approach to this problem.

From the docs:

assert_has_calls (calls, any_order=False)

assert the mock has been called with the specified calls. The mock_calls list is checked for the calls.

If any_order is False (the default) then the calls must be sequential. There can be extra calls before or after the specified calls.

If any_order is True then the calls can be in any order, but they must all appear in mock_calls.

Example:

>>> from unittest.mock import call, Mock
>>> mock = Mock(return_value=None)
>>> mock(1)
>>> mock(2)
>>> mock(3)
>>> mock(4)
>>> calls = [call(2), call(3)]
>>> mock.assert_has_calls(calls)
>>> calls = [call(4), call(2), call(3)]
>>> mock.assert_has_calls(calls, any_order=True)

Open Source HTML to PDF Renderer with Full CSS Support

Making a Bootstrap table column fit to content

Kind of an old question, but I arrived here looking for this. I wanted the table to be as small as possible, fitting to it's contents. The solution was to simply set the table width to an arbitrary small number (1px for example). I even created a CSS class to handle it:

.table-fit {
    width: 1px;
}

And use it like so:

<table class="table table-fit">

Spring Boot: Is it possible to use external application.properties files in arbitrary directories with a fat jar?

It's all explained here in the docs:

http://docs.spring.io/spring-boot/docs/current/reference/html/boot-features-external-config.html

Which explains that this is the order of precedence:

  • A /config subdir of the current directory.
  • The current directory
  • A classpath /config package
  • The classpath root

It also points out that you can define additional properties files for overrides like so:

java -jar myproject.jar
    --spring.config.location=classpath:/overrides.properties

If you use spring.config.location, then all the default locations for application.properties are also included. This means that you can set up default values in application.properties and override as required for a particular environment.

When should I write the keyword 'inline' for a function/method?

Oh man, one of my pet peeves.

inline is more like static or extern than a directive telling the compiler to inline your functions. extern, static, inline are linkage directives, used almost exclusively by the linker, not the compiler.

It is said that inline hints to the compiler that you think the function should be inlined. That may have been true in 1998, but a decade later the compiler needs no such hints. Not to mention humans are usually wrong when it comes to optimizing code, so most compilers flat out ignore the 'hint'.

  • static - the variable/function name cannot be used in other translation units. Linker needs to make sure it doesn't accidentally use a statically defined variable/function from another translation unit.

  • extern - use this variable/function name in this translation unit but don't complain if it isn't defined. The linker will sort it out and make sure all the code that tried to use some extern symbol has its address.

  • inline - this function will be defined in multiple translation units, don't worry about it. The linker needs to make sure all translation units use a single instance of the variable/function.

Note: Generally, declaring templates inline is pointless, as they have the linkage semantics of inline already. However, explicit specialization and instantiation of templates require inline to be used.

Specific answers to your questions:

  • When should I write the keyword 'inline' for a function/method in C++?

    Only when you want the function to be defined in a header. More exactly only when the function's definition can show up in multiple translation units. It's a good idea to define small (as in one liner) functions in the header file as it gives the compiler more information to work with while optimizing your code. It also increases compilation time.

  • When should I not write the keyword 'inline' for a function/method in C++?

    Don't add inline just because you think your code will run faster if the compiler inlines it.

  • When will the compiler not know when to make a function/method 'inline'?

    Generally, the compiler will be able to do this better than you. However, the compiler doesn't have the option to inline code if it doesn't have the function definition. In maximally optimized code usually all private methods are inlined whether you ask for it or not.

    As an aside to prevent inlining in GCC, use __attribute__(( noinline )), and in Visual Studio, use __declspec(noinline).

  • Does it matter if an application is multithreaded when one writes 'inline' for a function/method?

    Multithreading doesn't affect inlining in any way.

NTFS performance and large volumes of files and directories

100,000 should be fine.

I have (anecdotally) seen people having problems with many millions of files and I have had problems myself with Explorer just not having a clue how to count past 60-something thousand files, but NTFS should be good for the volumes you're talking.

In case you're wondering, the technical (and I hope theoretical) maximum number of files is: 4,294,967,295

Is there any way to redraw tmux window when switching smaller monitor to bigger one?

tmux limits the dimensions of a window to the smallest of each dimension across all the sessions to which the window is attached. If it did not do this there would be no sensible way to display the whole window area for all the attached clients.

The easiest thing to do is to detach any other clients from the sessions when you attach:

tmux attach -d

Alternately, you can move any other clients to a different session before attaching to the session:

takeover() {
    # create a temporary session that displays the "how to go back" message
    tmp='takeover temp session'
    if ! tmux has-session -t "$tmp"; then
        tmux new-session -d -s "$tmp"
        tmux set-option -t "$tmp" set-remain-on-exit on
        tmux new-window -kt "$tmp":0 \
            'echo "Use Prefix + L (i.e. ^B L) to return to session."'
    fi

    # switch any clients attached to the target session to the temp session
    session="$1"
    for client in $(tmux list-clients -t "$session" | cut -f 1 -d :); do
        tmux switch-client -c "$client" -t "$tmp"
    done

    # attach to the target session
    tmux attach -t "$session"
}
takeover 'original session' # or the session number if you do not name sessions

The screen will shrink again if a smaller client switches to the session.

There is also a variation where you only "take over" the window (link the window into a new session, set aggressive-resize, and switch any other sessions that have that window active to some other window), but it is harder to script in the general case (and different to “exit” since you would want to unlink the window or kill the session instead of just detaching from the session).

Serialize form data to JSON

Trying to solve the same problem (validation without getting into complex plugins and libraries), I created jQuery.serializeJSON, that improves serializeArray to support any kind of nested objects.

This plugin got very popular, but in another project I was using Backbone.js, where I would like to write the validation logic in the Backbone.js models. Then I created Backbone.Formwell, which allows you to show the errors returned by the validation method directly in the form.

Is there an upper bound to BigInteger?

The number is held in an int[] - the maximum size of an array is Integer.MAX_VALUE. So the maximum BigInteger probably is (2 ^ 32) ^ Integer.MAX_VALUE.

Admittedly, this is implementation dependent, not part of the specification.

In Java 8, some information was added to the BigInteger javadoc, giving a minimum supported range and the actual limit of the current implementation:

BigInteger must support values in the range -2Integer.MAX_VALUE (exclusive) to +2Integer.MAX_VALUE (exclusive) and may support values outside of that range.

Implementation note: BigInteger constructors and operations throw ArithmeticException when the result is out of the supported range of -2Integer.MAX_VALUE (exclusive) to +2Integer.MAX_VALUE (exclusive).

Add missing dates to pandas dataframe

Here's a nice method to fill in missing dates into a dataframe, with your choice of fill_value, days_back to fill in, and sort order (date_order) by which to sort the dataframe:

def fill_in_missing_dates(df, date_col_name = 'date',date_order = 'asc', fill_value = 0, days_back = 30):

    df.set_index(date_col_name,drop=True,inplace=True)
    df.index = pd.DatetimeIndex(df.index)
    d = datetime.now().date()
    d2 = d - timedelta(days = days_back)
    idx = pd.date_range(d2, d, freq = "D")
    df = df.reindex(idx,fill_value=fill_value)
    df[date_col_name] = pd.DatetimeIndex(df.index)

    return df

Excel formula to get ranking position

You could also use the RANK function

=RANK(C2,$C$2:$C$7,0)

It would return data like your example:

  | A       | B        | C
1 | name    | position | points
2 | person1 | 1        | 10
3 | person2 | 2        | 9
4 | person3 | 2        | 9
5 | person4 | 2        | 9
6 | person5 | 5        | 8
7 | person6 | 6        | 7

The 'Points' column needs to be sorted into descending order.

How to display loading message when an iFrame is loading?

Yes, you could use a transparent div positioned over the iframe area, with a loader gif as only background.

Then you can attach an onload event to the iframe:

 $(document).ready(function() {

   $("iframe#id").load(function() {
      $("#loader-id").hide();
   });
});

Failed to build gem native extension (installing Compass)

I struggled with you same issue for about 3 hours. As of Compass 1.0.alpha19, the requirement is for the rvm version 1.9.3.

There are several uncollected posts, however what worked for me was the following:

  1. sudo gem uninstall sass
  2. sudo gem uninstall compass
  3. rvm install ruby-1.9.3-p448
  4. sudo gem install sass --pre
  5. sudo gem install compass --pre

and that did it. Hope it works for you as well!

How to Generate Unique Public and Private Key via RSA

The RSACryptoServiceProvider(CspParameters) constructor creates a keypair which is stored in the keystore on the local machine. If you already have a keypair with the specified name, it uses the existing keypair.

It sounds as if you are not interested in having the key stored on the machine.

So use the RSACryptoServiceProvider(Int32) constructor:

public static void AssignNewKey(){
    RSA rsa = new RSACryptoServiceProvider(2048); // Generate a new 2048 bit RSA key

    string publicPrivateKeyXML = rsa.ToXmlString(true);
    string publicOnlyKeyXML = rsa.ToXmlString(false);
    // do stuff with keys...
}

EDIT:

Alternatively try setting the PersistKeyInCsp to false:

public static void AssignNewKey(){
    const int PROVIDER_RSA_FULL = 1;
    const string CONTAINER_NAME = "KeyContainer";
    CspParameters cspParams;
    cspParams = new CspParameters(PROVIDER_RSA_FULL);
    cspParams.KeyContainerName = CONTAINER_NAME;
    cspParams.Flags = CspProviderFlags.UseMachineKeyStore;
    cspParams.ProviderName = "Microsoft Strong Cryptographic Provider";
    rsa = new RSACryptoServiceProvider(cspParams);

    rsa.PersistKeyInCsp = false;

    string publicPrivateKeyXML = rsa.ToXmlString(true);
    string publicOnlyKeyXML = rsa.ToXmlString(false);
    // do stuff with keys...
}

Concatenate two string literals

Since C++14 you can use two real string literals:

const string hello = "Hello"s;

const string message = hello + ",world"s + "!"s;

or

const string exclam = "!"s;

const string message = "Hello"s + ",world"s + exclam;

set background color: Android

Color.parseColor("#rrggbb")

instead of #rrggbb you should be using hex values 0 to F for rr, gg and bb:

e.g. Color.parseColor("#000000") or Color.parseColor("#FFFFFF")

Source

From documentation:

public static int parseColor (String colorString):

Parse the color string, and return the corresponding color-int. If the string cannot be parsed, throws an IllegalArgumentException exception. Supported formats are: #RRGGBB #AARRGGBB 'red', 'blue', 'green', 'black', 'white', 'gray', 'cyan', 'magenta', 'yellow', 'lightgray', 'darkgray', 'grey', 'lightgrey', 'darkgrey', 'aqua', 'fuschia', 'lime', 'maroon', 'navy', 'olive', 'purple', 'silver', 'teal'

So I believe that if you are using #rrggbb you are getting IllegalArgumentException in your logcat

Alternative:

Color mColor = new Color();
mColor.red(redvalue);
mColor.green(greenvalue);
mColor.blue(bluevalue);
li.setBackgroundColor(mColor);

Use of the MANIFEST.MF file in Java

Manifest.MF contains information about the files contained in the JAR file.

Whenever a JAR file is created a default manifest.mf file is created inside META-INF folder and it contains the default entries like this:

Manifest-Version: 1.0
Created-By: 1.7.0_06 (Oracle Corporation)

These are entries as “header:value” pairs. The first one specifies the manifest version and second one specifies the JDK version with which the JAR file is created.

Main-Class header: When a JAR file is used to bundle an application in a package, we need to specify the class serving an entry point of the application. We provide this information using ‘Main-Class’ header of the manifest file,

Main-Class: {fully qualified classname}

The ‘Main-Class’ value here is the class having main method. After specifying this entry we can execute the JAR file to run the application.

Class-Path header: Most of the times we need to access the other JAR files from the classes packaged inside application’s JAR file. This can be done by providing their fully qualified paths in the manifest file using ‘Class-Path’ header,

Class-Path: {jar1-name jar2-name directory-name/jar3-name}

This header can be used to specify the external JAR files on the same local network and not inside the current JAR.

Package version related headers: When the JAR file is used for package versioning the following headers are used as specified by the Java language specification:

Headers in a manifest
Header                  | Definition
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Name | The name of the specification.
Specification-Title | The title of the specification.
Specification-Version | The version of the specification.
Specification-Vendor | The vendor of the specification.
Implementation-Title | The title of the implementation.
Implementation-Version | The build number of the implementation.
Implementation-Vendor | The vendor of the implementation.

Package sealing related headers:

We can also specify if any particular packages inside a JAR file should be sealed meaning all the classes defined in that package must be archived in the same JAR file. This can be specified with the help of ‘Sealed’ header,

Name: {package/some-package/} Sealed:true

Here, the package name must end with ‘/’.

Enhancing security with manifest files:

We can use manifest files entries to ensure the security of the web application or applet it packages with the different attributes as ‘Permissions’, ‘Codebae’, ‘Application-Name’, ‘Trusted-Only’ and many more.

META-INF folder:

This folder is where the manifest file resides. Also, it can contain more files containing meta data about the application. For example, in an EJB module JAR file, this folder contains the EJB deployment descriptor for the EJB module along with the manifest file for the JAR. Also, it contains the xml file containing mapping of an abstract EJB references to concrete container resources of the application server on which it will be run.

How to Serialize a list in java?

As pointed out already, most standard implementations of List are serializable. However you have to ensure that the objects referenced/contained within the list are also serializable.

What is the __del__ method, How to call it?

As mentioned earlier, the __del__ functionality is somewhat unreliable. In cases where it might seem useful, consider using the __enter__ and __exit__ methods instead. This will give a behaviour similar to the with open() as f: pass syntax used for accessing files. __enter__ is automatically called when entering the scope of with, while __exit__ is automatically called when exiting it. See this question for more details.

Download large file in python with requests

Not exactly what OP was asking, but... it's ridiculously easy to do that with urllib:

from urllib.request import urlretrieve
url = 'http://mirror.pnl.gov/releases/16.04.2/ubuntu-16.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso'
dst = 'ubuntu-16.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso'
urlretrieve(url, dst)

Or this way, if you want to save it to a temporary file:

from urllib.request import urlopen
from shutil import copyfileobj
from tempfile import NamedTemporaryFile
url = 'http://mirror.pnl.gov/releases/16.04.2/ubuntu-16.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso'
with urlopen(url) as fsrc, NamedTemporaryFile(delete=False) as fdst:
    copyfileobj(fsrc, fdst)

I watched the process:

watch 'ps -p 18647 -o pid,ppid,pmem,rsz,vsz,comm,args; ls -al *.iso'

And I saw the file growing, but memory usage stayed at 17 MB. Am I missing something?

Get GMT Time in Java

You can’t

First, you are asking the impossible. An old-fashioned Date object hasn’t got, as in cannot have a time zone or GMT offset.

But the date is always is interpreted in my local time zone.

I suppose that you have printed the Date or done something else that implicitly calls it toString method. I believe that this is the only time that the Date is interpreted in your time zone. More precisely in the current default time zone of your JVM. On the other hand this is unavoidable. Date.toString() does behave in that way, it picks up the JVM’s time zone setting and uses it for rendering the string to be returned.

You can with java.time

You shouldn’t use a Date, though. That class is poorly designed and fortunately long outdated. Also java.time, the modern Java date and time API that replaces it, has a class or two for dates and times with offset from GMT or UTC. I am considering GMT and UTC synonymous for now, strictly speaking they are not.

    OffsetDateTime now = OffsetDateTime.now(ZoneOffset.UTC);
    System.out.println("Time now in UTC (GMT) is " + now);

When I ran this snippet just now, the output was:

Time now in UTC (GMT) is 2019-06-17T11:51:38.246188Z

The trailing Z of the output means UTC.

Why doesn't list have safe "get" method like dictionary?

Dictionaries are for look ups. It makes sense to ask if an entry exists or not. Lists are usually iterated. It isn't common to ask if L[10] exists but rather if the length of L is 11.

Does HTTP use UDP?

The answer: Yes

Reason: See the OSI model.

Explaination:

HTTP is an application layer protocol, which could be encapsulated with a protocol that uses UDP, providing arguably faster reliable communication than TCP. The server daemon and client would obviously need to support this new protocol. Quake 2 protocol proves that UDP can be used over TCP to provide a basis for a structured communication system insuring flow control (e.g. chunk ids).

How to fix Error: "Could not find schema information for the attribute/element" by creating schema

Simple: In Visual Studio Report designer
1. Open the report in design mode and delete the dataset from the RDLC File
2. Open solution Explorer and delete the actual (corrupted) XSD file
3. Add the dataset back to the RDLC file.
4. The above procedure will create the new XSD file.
5. More detailed is below.

In Visual Studio, Open your RDLC file Report in Design mode. Click on the report and then Select View and then Report Data from the top line menu. Select Datasets and then Right Click and delete the dataset from the report. Next Open Solution Explorer, if it is not already open in your Visual Studio. Locate the XSD file (It should be the same name as the dataset you just deleted from the report). Now go back and right click again on the report data Datasets, and select Add Dataset . This will create a new XSD file and write the dataset properties to the report. Now your error message will be gone and any missing data will now appear in your reports.

Javascript one line If...else...else if statement

tl;dr

Yes, you can... If a then a, else if b then if c then c(b), else b, else null

a ? a : (b ? (c ? c(b) : b) : null)

a
  ? a
  : b
      ? c
        ? c(b)
        : b
      : null

longer version

Ternary operator ?: used as inline if-else is right associative. In short this means that the rightmost ? gets fed first and it takes exactly one closest operand on the left and two, with a :, on the right.

Practically speaking, consider the following statement (same as above):

a ? a : b ? c ? c(b) : b : null

The rightmost ? gets fed first, so find it and its surrounding three arguments and consecutively expand to the left to another ?.

   a ? a : b ? c ? c(b) : b : null
                 ^                  <---- RTL
1.            |1-?-2----:-3|
             ^ <-
2.        |1-?|--2---------|:-3---|
     ^ <-
3.|1-?-2-:|--3--------------------|

result: a ? a : (b ? (c ? c(b) : b) : null)

This is how computers read it:

  1. Term a is read.
    Node: a
  2. Nonterminal ? is read.
    Node: a ?
  3. Term a is read.
    Node: a ? a
  4. Nonterminal : is read.
    Node: a ? a :
  5. Term b is read.
    Node: a ? a : b
  6. Nonterminal ? is read, triggering the right-associativity rule. Associativity decides:
    node: a ? a : (b ?
  7. Term c is read.
    Node: a ? a : (b ? c
  8. Nonterminal ? is read, re-applying the right-associativity rule.
    Node: a ? a : (b ? (c ?
  9. Term c(b) is read.
    Node: a ? a : (b ? (c ? c(b)
  10. Nonterminal : is read.
    Node: a ? a : (b ? (c ? c(b) :
  11. Term b is read.
    Node: a ? a : (b ? (c ? c(b) : b
  12. Nonterminal : is read. The ternary operator ?: from previous scope is satisfied and the scope is closed.
    Node: a ? a : (b ? (c ? c(b) : b) :
  13. Term null is read.
    Node: a ? a : (b ? (c ? c(b) : b) : null
  14. No tokens to read. Close remaining open parenthesis.
    #Result is: a ? a : (b ? (c ? c(b) : b) : null)

Better readability

The ugly oneliner from above could (and should) be rewritten for readability as:
(Note that the indentation does not implicitly define correct closures as brackets () do.)

a
  ? a
  : b
      ? c
        ? c(b)
        : b
      : null

for example

return a + some_lengthy_variable_name > another_variable
        ? "yep"
        : "nop"

This approach comes with subtle limitations as explained in the link below. For proper solution, see Nullish coalescing in Bonus2.

function f(mayBeNullOrFalsy) {
  var cantBeNull = mayBeNullOrFalsy || 42                    // "default" value
  var alsoCantBe = mayBeNullOrFalsy ? mayBeNullOrFalsy : 42  // ugly...
  ..
}

Short-circuit evaluation

false && (anything) // is short-circuit evaluated to false.
true || (anything) // is short-circuit evaluated to true.

  another = another ?? 37 // same effect
  ..
}

An error has occured. Please see log file - eclipse juno

In my mac machine, I checked whether I installed two java versions or not. I got this error. Because i installed two java at a time.

User -> Library -> Java -> JavaVirtualMachines -> version 1.8.0 and version 11.0.1 has been installed.

I removed version 11.0.1. Now its working fine.

Android Recyclerview vs ListView with Viewholder

If you use RecycleView, first you need more efford to setup. You need to give more time to setup simple Item onclick, border, touch event and other simple thing. But end product will be perfect.

So decision is yours. I suggest, if you design simple app like phonebook loading, where simple click of item is enough, you can implement listview. But if you design like social media home page with unlimited scrolling. Several different decoration between item, much control of individual item than use recycle view.

How to open some ports on Ubuntu?

If you want to open it for a range and for a protocol

ufw allow 11200:11299/tcp
ufw allow 11200:11299/udp

iterating over each character of a String in ruby 1.8.6 (each_char)

But now you can do much more:

a = "cruel world"

a.scan(/\w+/)        #=> ["cruel", "world"]

a.scan(/.../)        #=> ["cru", "el ", "wor"]

a.scan(/(...)/)      #=> [["cru"], ["el "], ["wor"]]

a.scan(/(..)(..)/)   #=> [["cr", "ue"], ["l ", "wo"]]

How to find out "The most popular repositories" on Github?

Ranking by stars or forks is not working. Each promoted or created by a famous company repository is popular at the beginning. Also it is possible to have a number of them which are in trend right now (publications, marketing, events). It doesn't mean that those repositories are useful/popular.

The gitmostwanted.com project (repo at github) analyses GH Archive data in order to highlight the most interesting repositories and exclude others. Just compare the results with mentioned resources.

Update rows in one table with data from another table based on one column in each being equal

update
  table1 t1
set
  (
    t1.column1,
    t1.column2
      ) = (
    select
      t2.column1,
      t2.column2
    from
      table2  t2
    where
      t2.column1 = t1.column1
     )
    where exists (
      select
        null
      from
        table2 t2
      where
        t2.column1 = t1.column1
      );

Or this (if t2.column1 <=> t1.column1 are many to one and anyone of them is good):

update
  table1 t1
set
  (
    t1.column1,
    t1.column2
      ) = (
    select
      t2.column1,
      t2.column2
    from
      table2  t2
    where
      t2.column1 = t1.column1
    and
      rownum = 1
     )
    where exists (
      select
        null
      from
        table2 t2
      where
        t2.column1 = t1.column1

SQL Count for each date

When you cast a DateTime to an int it "truncates" at noon, you might want to strip the day out like so

Classpath resource not found when running as jar

resource.getFile() expects the resource itself to be available on the file system, i.e. it can't be nested inside a jar file. This is why it works when you run your application in STS but doesn't work once you've built your application and run it from the executable jar. Rather than using getFile() to access the resource's contents, I'd recommend using getInputStream() instead. That'll allow you to read the resource's content regardless of where it's located.

Using Keras & Tensorflow with AMD GPU

If you have access to other AMD gpu's please see here: https://github.com/ROCmSoftwarePlatform/hiptensorflow/tree/hip/rocm_docs

This should get you going in the right direction for tensorflow on the ROCm platform, but Selly's post about https://rocm.github.io/hardware.html is the deal with this route. That page is not an exhaustive list, I found out on my own that the Xeon E5 v2 Ivy Bridge works fine with ROCm even though they list v3 or newer, graphics cards however are a bit more picky. gfx8 or newer with a few small exceptions, polaris and maybe others as time goes on.

UPDATE - It looks like hiptensorflow has an option for opencl support during configure. I would say investigate the link even if you don't have gfx8+ or polaris gpu if the opencl implementation works. It is a long winded process but an hour or three (depending on hardware) following a well written instruction isn't too much to lose to find out.

How to remove default mouse-over effect on WPF buttons?

This Link helped me alot http://www.codescratcher.com/wpf/remove-default-mouse-over-effect-on-wpf-buttons/

Define a style in UserControl.Resources or Window.Resources

 <Window.Resources>
        <Style x:Key="MyButton" TargetType="Button">
            <Setter Property="OverridesDefaultStyle" Value="True" />
            <Setter Property="Cursor" Value="Hand" />
            <Setter Property="Template">
                <Setter.Value>
                    <ControlTemplate TargetType="Button">
                        <Border Name="border" BorderThickness="0" BorderBrush="Black" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}">
                            <ContentPresenter HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" />
                        </Border>
                        <ControlTemplate.Triggers>
                            <Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True">
                                <Setter Property="Opacity" Value="0.8" />
                            </Trigger>
                        </ControlTemplate.Triggers>
                    </ControlTemplate>
                </Setter.Value>
            </Setter>
        </Style>
    </Window.Resources>

Then add the style to your button this way Style="{StaticResource MyButton}"

<Button Name="btnSecond" Width="350" Height="120" Margin="15" Style="{StaticResource MyButton}">
    <Button.Background>
        <ImageBrush ImageSource="/Remove_Default_Button_Effect;component/Images/WithStyle.jpg"></ImageBrush>
    </Button.Background>
</Button>

Modelling an elevator using Object-Oriented Analysis and Design

I've seen many variants of this problem. One of the main differences (that determines the difficulty) is whether there is some centralized attempt to have a "smart and efficient system" that would have load balancing (e.g., send more idle elevators to lobby in morning). If that is the case, the design will include a whole subsystem with really fun design.

A full design is obviously too much to present here and there are many altenatives. The breadth is also not clear. In an interview, they'll try to figure out how you would think. However, these are some of the things you would need:

  1. Representation of the central controller (assuming there is one).

  2. Representations of elevators

  3. Representations of the interface units of the elevator (these may be different from elevator to elevator). Obviously also call buttons on every floor, etc.

  4. Representations of the arrows or indicators on each floor (almost a "view" of the elevator model).

  5. Representation of a human and cargo (may be important for factoring in maximal loads)

  6. Representation of the building (in some cases, as certain floors may be blocked at times, etc.)

Cross domain POST request is not sending cookie Ajax Jquery

You cannot set or read cookies on CORS requests through JavaScript. Although CORS allows cross-origin requests, the cookies are still subject to the browser's same-origin policy, which means only pages from the same origin can read/write the cookie. withCredentials only means that any cookies set by the remote host are sent to that remote host. You will have to set the cookie from the remote server by using the Set-Cookie header.

Select objects based on value of variable in object using jq

I had a similar related question: What if you wanted the original object format back (with key names, e.g. FOO, BAR)?

Jq provides to_entries and from_entries to convert between objects and key-value pair arrays. That along with map around the select

These functions convert between an object and an array of key-value pairs. If to_entries is passed an object, then for each k: v entry in the input, the output array includes {"key": k, "value": v}.

from_entries does the opposite conversion, and with_entries(foo) is a shorthand for to_entries | map(foo) | from_entries, useful for doing some operation to all keys and values of an object. from_entries accepts key, Key, name, Name, value and Value as keys.

jq15 < json 'to_entries | map(select(.value.location=="Stockholm")) | from_entries'

{
  "FOO": {
    "name": "Donald",
    "location": "Stockholm"
  },
  "BAR": {
    "name": "Walt",
    "location": "Stockholm"
  }
}

Using the with_entries shorthand, this becomes:

jq15 < json 'with_entries(select(.value.location=="Stockholm"))'
{
  "FOO": {
    "name": "Donald",
    "location": "Stockholm"
  },
  "BAR": {
    "name": "Walt",
    "location": "Stockholm"
  }
}

How to access the local Django webserver from outside world

Pick one or more from:

  • Your application isn't successfully listening on the intended IP:PORT
    • Because you haven't configured it successfully
    • Because the user doesn't have permission to
  • Your application is listening successfully on the intended IP:PORT, but clients can't reach it because
    • The server local iptables prevents it.
    • A firewall prevents it.

So, you can check that your application is listening successfully by running lsof -i as root on the machine and look for a python entry with the corresponding port you've specified.

Non-root users generally cannot bind to ports < 1024.

You'll need to look at iptables -nvL to see if there's a rule that would prevent access to the ip:port that you are trying to bind your application to.

If there is an upstream firewall and you don't know much about it, you'll need to talk to your network administrators.

How to quickly clear a JavaScript Object?

Well, at the risk of making things too easy...

for (var member in myObject) delete myObject[member];

...would seem to be pretty effective in cleaning the object in one line of code with a minimum of scary brackets. All members will be truly deleted instead of left as garbage.

Obviously if you want to delete the object itself, you'll still have to do a separate delete() for that.

The value of a string in database depends of your value in your UI, but generally, it's an empty string '' if you specify the parameter in your query or stored procedure.

Terminating a script in PowerShell

I realize this is an old post but I find myself coming back to this thread a lot as it is one of the top search results when searching for this topic. However, I always leave more confused then when I came due to the conflicting information. Ultimately I always have to perform my own tests to figure it out. So this time I will post my findings.

TL;DR Most people will want to use Exit to terminate a running scripts. However, if your script is merely declaring functions to later be used in a shell, then you will want to use Return in the definitions of said functions.

Exit vs Return vs Break

  • Exit: This will "exit" the currently running context. If you call this command from a script it will exit the script. If you call this command from the shell it will exit the shell.

    If a function calls the Exit command it will exit what ever context it is running in. So if that function is only called from within a running script it will exit that script. However, if your script merely declares the function so that it can be used from the current shell and you run that function from the shell, it will exit the shell because the shell is the context in which the function contianing the Exit command is running.

    Note: By default if you right click on a script to run it in PowerShell, once the script is done running, PowerShell will close automatically. This has nothing to do with the Exit command or anything else in your script. It is just a default PowerShell behavior for scripts being ran using this specific method of running a script. The same is true for batch files and the Command Line window.

  • Return: This will return to the previous call point. If you call this command from a script (outside any functions) it will return to the shell. If you call this command from the shell it will return to the shell (which is the previous call point for a single command ran from the shell). If you call this command from a function it will return to where ever the function was called from.

    Execution of any commands after the call point that it is returned to will continue from that point. If a script is called from the shell and it contains the Return command outside any functions then when it returns to the shell there are no more commands to run thus making a Return used in this way essentially the same as Exit.

  • Break: This will break out of loops and switch cases. If you call this command while not in a loop or switch case it will break out of the script. If you call Break inside a loop that is nested inside a loop it will only break out of the loop it was called in.

    There is also an interesting feature of Break where you can prefix a loop with a label and then you can break out of that labeled loop even if the Break command is called within several nested groups within that labeled loop.

How to make exe files from a node.js app?

I was using below technology:

  1. @vercel/ncc (this make sure we bundle all necessary dependency into single file)
  2. pkg (this to make exe file)

Let do below:

  1. npm i -g @vercel/ncc

  2. ncc build app.ts -o dist (my entry file is app.ts, output is in dist folder, make sure you run in folder where package.json and app.ts reside, after run above you may see the index.js file in the folder dist)

  3. npm install -g pkg (installing pkg)

  4. pkg index.js (make sure you are in the dist folder above)

git clone: Authentication failed for <URL>

After trying almost everything on this thread and others, continuing to Google, the only thing that worked for me, in the end, was to start Visual Studio as my AD user via command line:

cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2019\Community\Common7\IDE
runas /netonly /user:<comp\name.surname> devenv.exe

Original issue: [1]: https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/problem/304224/git-failed-with-a-fatal-errorauthentication-failed.html

My situation is I'm on a personal machine connecting to a company's internal/local devops server (not cloud-based) that uses AD authorization. I had no issue with TFS, but with git could not get the clone to work (Git failed with a fatal error. Authentication failed for [url]) until I did that.

groovy: safely find a key in a map and return its value

The whole point of using Maps is direct access. If you know for sure that the value in a map will never be Groovy-false, then you can do this:

def mymap = [name:"Gromit", likes:"cheese", id:1234]
def key = "likes"

if(mymap[key]) {
    println mymap[key]
}

However, if the value could potentially be Groovy-false, you should use:

if(mymap.containsKey(key)) {
    println mymap[key]
}

The easiest solution, though, if you know the value isn't going to be Groovy-false (or you can ignore that), and want a default value, is like this:

def value = mymap[key] ?: "default"

All three of these solutions are significantly faster than your examples, because they don't scan the entire map for keys. They take advantage of the HashMap (or LinkedHashMap) design that makes direct key access nearly instantaneous.

How to darken an image on mouseover?

What are the best use cases for Akka framework

I've recently implemented the canonical map-reduce example in Akka: Word count. So it's one use case of Akka: better performance. It was more of a experiment of JRuby and Akka's actors than anything else, but it also shows that Akka is not Scala or Java only: it works on all languages on top of JVM.

Expression must be a modifiable L-value

lvalue means "left value" -- it should be assignable. You cannot change the value of text since it is an array, not a pointer.

Either declare it as char pointer (in this case it's better to declare it as const char*):

const char *text;
if(number == 2)
    text = "awesome";
else
    text = "you fail";

Or use strcpy:

char text[60];
if(number == 2)
    strcpy(text, "awesome");
else
    strcpy(text, "you fail");

Implementing a HashMap in C

Well if you know the basics behind them, it shouldn't be too hard.

Generally you create an array called "buckets" that contain the key and value, with an optional pointer to create a linked list.

When you access the hash table with a key, you process the key with a custom hash function which will return an integer. You then take the modulus of the result and that is the location of your array index or "bucket". Then you check the unhashed key with the stored key, and if it matches, then you found the right place.

Otherwise, you've had a "collision" and must crawl through the linked list and compare keys until you match. (note some implementations use a binary tree instead of linked list for collisions).

Check out this fast hash table implementation:

https://attractivechaos.wordpress.com/2009/09/29/khash-h/

How to configure Git post commit hook

As the previous answer did show an example of how the full hook might look like here is the code of my working post-receive hook:

#!/usr/bin/python

import sys
from subprocess import call

if __name__ == '__main__':
    for line in sys.stdin.xreadlines():
        old, new, ref = line.strip().split(' ')
        if ref == 'refs/heads/master':
            print "=============================================="
            print "Pushing to master. Triggering jenkins. "
            print "=============================================="
            sys.stdout.flush()
            call(["curl", "-sS", "http://jenkinsserver/git/notifyCommit?url=ssh://user@gitserver/var/git/repo.git"])

In this case I trigger jenkins jobs only when pushing to master and not other branches.

How Stuff and 'For Xml Path' work in SQL Server?

This article covers various ways of concatenating strings in SQL, including an improved version of your code which doesn't XML-encode the concatenated values.

SELECT ID, abc = STUFF
(
    (
        SELECT ',' + name
        FROM temp1 As T2
        -- You only want to combine rows for a single ID here:
        WHERE T2.ID = T1.ID
        ORDER BY name
        FOR XML PATH (''), TYPE
    ).value('.', 'varchar(max)')
, 1, 1, '')
FROM temp1 As T1
GROUP BY id

To understand what's happening, start with the inner query:

SELECT ',' + name
FROM temp1 As T2
WHERE T2.ID = 42 -- Pick a random ID from the table
ORDER BY name
FOR XML PATH (''), TYPE

Because you're specifying FOR XML, you'll get a single row containing an XML fragment representing all of the rows.

Because you haven't specified a column alias for the first column, each row would be wrapped in an XML element with the name specified in brackets after the FOR XML PATH. For example, if you had FOR XML PATH ('X'), you'd get an XML document that looked like:

<X>,aaa</X>
<X>,bbb</X>
...

But, since you haven't specified an element name, you just get a list of values:

,aaa,bbb,...

The .value('.', 'varchar(max)') simply retrieves the value from the resulting XML fragment, without XML-encoding any "special" characters. You now have a string that looks like:

',aaa,bbb,...'

The STUFF function then removes the leading comma, giving you a final result that looks like:

'aaa,bbb,...'

It looks quite confusing at first glance, but it does tend to perform quite well compared to some of the other options.

For myself, using Jquery lib 2.1.1 the following did NOT work the way I expected:

Set element data attribute value:

$('.my-class').data('num', 'myValue');
console.log($('#myElem').data('num'));// as expected = 'myValue'

BUT the element itself remains without the attribute:

<div class="my-class"></div>

I needed the DOM updated so I could later do $('.my-class[data-num="myValue"]') //current length is 0

So I had to do

$('.my-class').attr('data-num', 'myValue');

To get the DOM to update:

<div class="my-class" data-num="myValue"></div>

Whether the attribute exists or not $.attr will overwrite.

from jquery $.ajax to angular $http

The AngularJS way of calling $http would look like:

$http({
    url: "http://example.appspot.com/rest/app",
    method: "POST",
    data: {"foo":"bar"}
}).then(function successCallback(response) {
        // this callback will be called asynchronously
        // when the response is available
        $scope.data = response.data;
    }, function errorCallback(response) {
        // called asynchronously if an error occurs
        // or server returns response with an error status.
        $scope.error = response.statusText;
});

or could be written even simpler using shortcut methods:

$http.post("http://example.appspot.com/rest/app", {"foo":"bar"})
.then(successCallback, errorCallback);

There are number of things to notice:

  • AngularJS version is more concise (especially using .post() method)
  • AngularJS will take care of converting JS objects into JSON string and setting headers (those are customizable)
  • Callback functions are named success and error respectively (also please note parameters of each callback) - Deprecated in angular v1.5
  • use then function instead.
  • More info of then usage can be found here

The above is just a quick example and some pointers, be sure to check AngularJS documentation for more: http://docs.angularjs.org/api/ng.$http

Differences between arm64 and aarch64

AArch64 is the 64-bit state introduced in the Armv8-A architecture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture#ARMv8-A). The 32-bit state which is backwards compatible with Armv7-A and previous 32-bit Arm architectures is referred to as AArch32. Therefore the GNU triplet for the 64-bit ISA is aarch64. The Linux kernel community chose to call their port of the kernel to this architecture arm64 rather than aarch64, so that's where some of the arm64 usage comes from.

As far as I know the Apple backend for aarch64 was called arm64 whereas the LLVM community-developed backend was called aarch64 (as it is the canonical name for the 64-bit ISA) and later the two were merged and the backend now is called aarch64.

So AArch64 and ARM64 refer to the same thing.

Is there a way to get colored text in GitHubflavored Markdown?

You can not color plain text in a GitHub README.md file. You can however add color to code samples in your GitHub README.md file with the tags below.

To do this, just add tags, such as these samples, to your README.md file:

```json
   // Code for coloring
```
```html
   // Code for coloring
```
```js
   // Code for coloring
```
```css
   // Code for coloring
```
// etc.

**Colored Code Example, JavaScript:** place this code below, in your GitHub README.md file and see how it colors the code for you.
  import { Component } from '@angular/core';
  import { MovieService } from './services/movie.service';

  @Component({
    selector: 'app-root',
    templateUrl: './app.component.html',
    styleUrls: ['./app.component.css'],
    providers: [ MovieService ]
  })
  export class AppComponent {
    title = 'app works!';
  }

No "pre" or "code" tags are needed.

This is now covered in the GitHub Markdown documentation (about half way down the page, there's an example using Ruby). GitHub uses Linguist to identify and highlight syntax - you can find a full list of supported languages (as well as their markdown keywords) over in the Linguist's YAML file.

Update using LINQ to SQL

LINQ is a query tool (Q = Query) - so there is no magic LINQ way to update just the single row, except through the (object-oriented) data-context (in the case of LINQ-to-SQL). To update data, you need to fetch it out, update the record, and submit the changes:

using(var ctx = new FooContext()) {
    var obj = ctx.Bars.Single(x=>x.Id == id);
    obj.SomeProp = 123;
    ctx.SubmitChanges();
}

Or write an SP that does the same in TSQL, and expose the SP through the data-context:

using(var ctx = new FooContext()) {
    ctx.UpdateBar(id, 123);
}

Can't concat bytes to str

You can convert type of plaintext to string:

f.write(str(plaintext) + '\n')

You can also use the following command:

Best Practice for Forcing Garbage Collection in C#

I think you already listed the best practice and that is NOT to use it unless REALLY necessary. I would strongly recommend looking at your code in more detail, using profiling tools potentially if needed to answer these questions first.

  1. Do you have something in your code that is declaring items at a larger scope than needed
  2. Is the memory usage really too high
  3. Compare performance before and after using GC.Collect() to see if it really helps.

The import com.google.android.gms cannot be resolved

Above solutions should solve your problem. If these do not, make sure you update your Android sdk using SDK manager and install the latest lib project and then repeat the above steps again.

How to copy text to the client's clipboard using jQuery?

Copying to the clipboard is a tricky task to do in Javascript in terms of browser compatibility. The best way to do it is using a small flash. It will work on every browser. You can check it in this article.

Here's how to do it for Internet Explorer:

function copy (str)
{
    //for IE ONLY!
    window.clipboardData.setData('Text',str);
}

How to run a single test with Mocha?

run single test –by filename–

Actually, one can also run a single mocha test by filename (not just by „it()-string-grepping“) if you remove the glob pattern (e.g. ./test/**/*.spec.js) from your mocha.opts, respectively create a copy, without:

node_modules/.bin/mocha --opts test/mocha.single.opts test/self-test.spec.js

Here's my mocha.single.opts (it's only different in missing the aforementioned glob line)

--require ./test/common.js
--compilers js:babel-core/register
--reporter list
--recursive

Background: While you can override the various switches from the opts-File (starting with --) you can't override the glob. That link also has some explanations.

Hint: if node_modules/.bin/mocha confuses you, to use the local package mocha. You can also write just mocha, if you have it installed globally.

And if you want the comforts of package.json: Still: remove the **/*-ish glob from your mocha.opts, insert them here, for the all-testing, leave them away for the single testing:

"test": "mocha ./test/**/*.spec.js",
"test-watch": "mocha -R list -w ./test/**/*.spec.js",
"test-single": "mocha $1",
"test-single-watch": "mocha -R list -w $1",

usage:

> npm run test

respectively

> npm run test-single -- test/ES6.self-test.spec.js

(mind the --!)

HTTP status code 0 - Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain?

From my limited experience, I would say that the following two scenario could cause response status code: 0, keep in mind; their could be more, but I know of those two:

  • your connection maybe responding slowly.
  • or maybe the the back-end server is not available.

the thing is, status: 0 is slightly generic, and their could be more use cases that trigger an empty response body.

Inline CSS styles in React: how to implement a:hover?

Full CSS support is exactly the reason this huge amount of CSSinJS libraries, to do this efficiently, you need to generate actual CSS, not inline styles. Also inline styles are much slower in react in a bigger system. Disclaimer - I maintain JSS.

Array.size() vs Array.length

The .size() method is deprecated as of jQuery 1.8. Use the .length property instead

I think you should avoid writing side-effecting method. Return true or false from your method and you can check these methods in unit tests.

List of standard lengths for database fields

W3C's recommendation:

If designing a form or database that will accept names from people with a variety of backgrounds, you should ask yourself whether you really need to have separate fields for given name and family name.

… Bear in mind that names in some cultures can be quite a lot longer than your own. … Avoid limiting the field size for names in your database. In particular, do not assume that a four-character Japanese name in UTF-8 will fit in four bytes – you are likely to actually need 12.

https://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-personal-names

For database fields, VARCHAR(255) is a safe default choice, unless you can actually come up with a good reason to use something else. For typical web applications, performance won't be a problem. Don't prematurely optimize.

If you want window handles for ALL of your application's Windows for some reason, you can use the Application.Windows property to get at all the Windows and then use WindowInteropHandler to get at their handles as you have already demonstrated.

Why does integer division in C# return an integer and not a float?

While it is common for new programmer to make this mistake of performing integer division when they actually meant to use floating point division, in actual practice integer division is a very common operation. If you are assuming that people rarely use it, and that every time you do division you'll always need to remember to cast to floating points, you are mistaken.

First off, integer division is quite a bit faster, so if you only need a whole number result, one would want to use the more efficient algorithm.

Secondly, there are a number of algorithms that use integer division, and if the result of division was always a floating point number you would be forced to round the result every time. One example off of the top of my head is changing the base of a number. Calculating each digit involves the integer division of a number along with the remainder, rather than the floating point division of the number.

Because of these (and other related) reasons, integer division results in an integer. If you want to get the floating point division of two integers you'll just need to remember to cast one to a double/float/decimal.

Regex for allowing alphanumeric,-,_ and space

Character sets will help out a ton here. You want to create a matching set for the characters that you want to validate:

  • You can match alphanumeric with a \w, which is the same as [A-Za-z0-9_] in JavaScript (other languages can differ).
  • That leaves - and spaces, which can be combined into a matching set such as [\w\- ]. However, you may want to consider using \s instead of just the space character (\s also matches tabs, and other forms of whitespace)
    • Note that I'm escaping - as \- so that the regex engine doesn't confuse it with a character range like A-Z
  • Last up, you probably want to ensure that the entire string matches by anchoring the start and end via ^ and $

The full regex you're probably looking for is:

/^[\w\-\s]+$/

(Note that the + indicates that there must be at least one character for it to match; use a * instead, if a zero-length string is also ok)

Finally, http://www.regular-expressions.info/ is an awesome reference

Bonus Points: This regex does not match non-ASCII alphas. Unfortunately, the regex engine in most browsers does not support named character sets, but there are some libraries to help with that.

For languages/platforms that do support named character sets, you can use /^[\p{Letter}\d\_\-\s]+$/
