DISABLE the Horizontal Scroll

I know it's too late, but there is an approach in javascript that can help you detect witch html element is causing the horizontal overflow -> scrollbar to appear

Here is a link to the post on CSS Tricks

var docWidth = document.documentElement.offsetWidth;
[].forEach.call(
  document.querySelectorAll('*'),
  function(el) {
    if (el.offsetWidth > docWidth) {
      console.log(el);
    }
  }
);

it Might return something like this:

<div class="div-with-extra-width">...</div>

then you just remove the extra width from the div or set it's max-width:100%

Hope this helps!

It fixed the problem for me :]

what does this mean ? image/png;base64?

It's an inlined image (png), encoded in base64. It can make a page faster: the browser doesn't have to query the server for the image data separately, saving a round trip.

(It can also make it slower if abused: these resources are not cached, so the bytes are included in each page load.)

Call and receive output from Python script in Java?

The best way to achieve would be to use Apache Commons Exec as I use it for production without problems even for Java 8 environment because of the fact that it lets you execute any external process (including python, bash etc) in synchronous and asynchronous way by using watchdogs.

 CommandLine cmdLine = new CommandLine("python");
 cmdLine.addArgument("/my/python/script/script.py");
 DefaultExecuteResultHandler resultHandler = new DefaultExecuteResultHandler();

 ExecuteWatchdog watchdog = new ExecuteWatchdog(60*1000);
 Executor executor = new DefaultExecutor();
 executor.setExitValue(1);
 executor.setWatchdog(watchdog);
 executor.execute(cmdLine, resultHandler);

 // some time later the result handler callback was invoked so we
 // can safely request the exit value
 resultHandler.waitFor();

Complete source code for a small but complete POC is shared here that addresses another concern in this post;

Maven plugin not using Eclipse's proxy settings

Maven plugin uses a settings file where the configuration can be set. Its path is available in Eclipse at Window|Preferences|Maven|User Settings. If the file doesn't exist, create it and put on something like this:

<settings xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/SETTINGS/1.0.0"
  xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
  xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/SETTINGS/1.0.0
                      http://maven.apache.org/xsd/settings-1.0.0.xsd">
  <localRepository/>
  <interactiveMode/>
  <usePluginRegistry/>
  <offline/>
  <pluginGroups/>
  <servers/>
  <mirrors/>
  <proxies>
    <proxy>
      <id>myproxy</id>
      <active>true</active>
      <protocol>http</protocol>
      <host>192.168.1.100</host>
      <port>6666</port>
      <username></username>
      <password></password>
      <nonProxyHosts>localhost|127.0.0.1</nonProxyHosts>
    </proxy>
  </proxies>
  <profiles/>
  <activeProfiles/>
</settings>

After editing the file, it's just a matter of clicking on Update Settings button and it's done. I've just done it and it worked :)

Android Canvas.drawText

It should be noted that the documentation recommends using a Layout rather than Canvas.drawText directly. My full answer about using a StaticLayout is here, but I will provide a summary below.

String text = "This is some text.";

TextPaint textPaint = new TextPaint();
textPaint.setAntiAlias(true);
textPaint.setTextSize(16 * getResources().getDisplayMetrics().density);
textPaint.setColor(0xFF000000);

int width = (int) textPaint.measureText(text);
StaticLayout staticLayout = new StaticLayout(text, textPaint, (int) width, Layout.Alignment.ALIGN_NORMAL, 1.0f, 0, false);
staticLayout.draw(canvas);

Here is a fuller example in the context of a custom view:

enter image description here

public class MyView extends View {

    String mText = "This is some text.";
    TextPaint mTextPaint;
    StaticLayout mStaticLayout;

    // use this constructor if creating MyView programmatically
    public MyView(Context context) {
        super(context);
        initLabelView();
    }

    // this constructor is used when created from xml
    public MyView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) {
        super(context, attrs);
        initLabelView();
    }

    private void initLabelView() {
        mTextPaint = new TextPaint();
        mTextPaint.setAntiAlias(true);
        mTextPaint.setTextSize(16 * getResources().getDisplayMetrics().density);
        mTextPaint.setColor(0xFF000000);

        // default to a single line of text
        int width = (int) mTextPaint.measureText(mText);
        mStaticLayout = new StaticLayout(mText, mTextPaint, (int) width, Layout.Alignment.ALIGN_NORMAL, 1.0f, 0, false);

        // New API alternate
        //
        // StaticLayout.Builder builder = StaticLayout.Builder.obtain(mText, 0, mText.length(), mTextPaint, width)
        //        .setAlignment(Layout.Alignment.ALIGN_NORMAL)
        //        .setLineSpacing(1, 0) // multiplier, add
        //        .setIncludePad(false);
        // mStaticLayout = builder.build();
    }

    @Override
    protected void onMeasure(int widthMeasureSpec, int heightMeasureSpec) {
        // Tell the parent layout how big this view would like to be
        // but still respect any requirements (measure specs) that are passed down.

        // determine the width
        int width;
        int widthMode = MeasureSpec.getMode(widthMeasureSpec);
        int widthRequirement = MeasureSpec.getSize(widthMeasureSpec);
        if (widthMode == MeasureSpec.EXACTLY) {
            width = widthRequirement;
        } else {
            width = mStaticLayout.getWidth() + getPaddingLeft() + getPaddingRight();
            if (widthMode == MeasureSpec.AT_MOST) {
                if (width > widthRequirement) {
                    width = widthRequirement;
                    // too long for a single line so relayout as multiline
                    mStaticLayout = new StaticLayout(mText, mTextPaint, width, Layout.Alignment.ALIGN_NORMAL, 1.0f, 0, false);
                }
            }
        }

        // determine the height
        int height;
        int heightMode = MeasureSpec.getMode(heightMeasureSpec);
        int heightRequirement = MeasureSpec.getSize(heightMeasureSpec);
        if (heightMode == MeasureSpec.EXACTLY) {
            height = heightRequirement;
        } else {
            height = mStaticLayout.getHeight() + getPaddingTop() + getPaddingBottom();
            if (heightMode == MeasureSpec.AT_MOST) {
                height = Math.min(height, heightRequirement);
            }
        }

        // Required call: set width and height
        setMeasuredDimension(width, height);
    }

    @Override
    protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
        super.onDraw(canvas);
        // do as little as possible inside onDraw to improve performance

        // draw the text on the canvas after adjusting for padding
        canvas.save();
        canvas.translate(getPaddingLeft(), getPaddingTop());
        mStaticLayout.draw(canvas);
        canvas.restore();

TypeError: Object of type 'bytes' is not JSON serializable

I was dealing with this issue today, and I knew that I had something encoded as a bytes object that I was trying to serialize as json with json.dump(my_json_object, write_to_file.json). my_json_object in this case was a very large json object that I had created, so I had several dicts, lists, and strings to look at to find what was still in bytes format.

The way I ended up solving it: the write_to_file.json will have everything up to the bytes object that is causing the issue.

In my particular case this was a line obtained through

for line in text:
    json_object['line'] = line.strip()

I solved by first finding this error with the help of the write_to_file.json, then by correcting it to:

for line in text:
    json_object['line'] = line.strip().decode()

How can I check if a directory exists?

The best way is probably trying to open it, using just opendir() for instance.

Note that it's always best to try to use a filesystem resource, and handling any errors occuring because it doesn't exist, rather than just checking and then later trying. There is an obvious race condition in the latter approach.

Node.js: Difference between req.query[] and req.params

I want to mention one important note regarding req.query , because currently I am working on pagination functionality based on req.query and I have one interesting example to demonstrate to you...

Example:

// Fetching patients from the database
exports.getPatients = (req, res, next) => {

const pageSize = +req.query.pageSize;
const currentPage = +req.query.currentPage;

const patientQuery = Patient.find();
let fetchedPatients;

// If pageSize and currentPage are not undefined (if they are both set and contain valid values)
if(pageSize && currentPage) {
    /**
     * Construct two different queries
     * - Fetch all patients
     * - Adjusted one to only fetch a selected slice of patients for a given page
     */
    patientQuery
        /**
         * This means I will not retrieve all patients I find, but I will skip the first "n" patients
         * For example, if I am on page 2, then I want to skip all patients that were displayed on page 1,
         *
         * Another example: if I am displaying 7 patients per page , I want to skip 7 items because I am on page 2,
         * so I want to skip (7 * (2 - 1)) => 7 items
         */
        .skip(pageSize * (currentPage - 1))

        /**
         * Narrow dont the amound documents I retreive for the current page
         * Limits the amount of returned documents
         *
         * For example: If I got 7 items per page, then I want to limit the query to only
         * return 7 items.
         */
        .limit(pageSize);
}
patientQuery.then(documents => {
    res.status(200).json({
        message: 'Patients fetched successfully',
        patients: documents
    });
  });
};

You will noticed + sign in front of req.query.pageSize and req.query.currentPage

Why? If you delete + in this case, you will get an error, and that error will be thrown because we will use invalid type (with error message 'limit' field must be numeric).

Important: By default if you extracting something from these query parameters, it will always be a string, because it's coming the URL and it's treated as a text.

If we need to work with numbers, and convert query statements from text to number, we can simply add a plus sign in front of statement.

Shortcut to create properties in Visual Studio?

In addition to Amra's answer, you can find other snippets by typing

Ctrl + K, Ctrl + X

Which is mapped to Edit.InsertSnippet in my Visual Studio and shows you the full list of snippets available.

Also remember that you can configure your own snippets by using the Snippets Manager, which is available in the Tools menu, Code Snippets Manager.... Basically you create a file *.snippet and use the Import button in the Code Snippets Manager to add it to Visual Studio. For a full tutorial you can go to the docs; Walkthrough: Create a code snippet.

In Visual Studio Code snippets are handled slightly different than in Visual Studio. You can access all snippets by typing Ctrl + Shift + P and type in snippet. Two options should be available, Insert Snippet and Preferences: Configure User Snippets.

The former inserts a snippet from your list of snippets (using the Language Mode which you can see in the status bar), and with the latter you can create your own snippets for any Language Mode.

If you know the shortname you can just type that and use Tab to expand the snippet. For inserting a C# property you have three snippets available, prop, propfull, and propg, for different purposes.

ES6 modules implementation, how to load a json file

json-loader doesn't load json file if it's array, in this case you need to make sure it has a key, for example

Override default Spring-Boot application.properties settings in Junit Test

You can use @TestPropertySource to override values in application.properties. From its javadoc:

test property sources can be used to selectively override properties defined in system and application property sources

For example:

@RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
@SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = ExampleApplication.class)
@TestPropertySource(locations="classpath:test.properties")
public class ExampleApplicationTests {

}

Send an Array with an HTTP Get

That depends on what the target server accepts. There is no definitive standard for this. See also a.o. Wikipedia: Query string:

While there is no definitive standard, most web frameworks allow multiple values to be associated with a single field (e.g. field1=value1&field1=value2&field2=value3).[4][5]

Generally, when the target server uses a strong typed programming language like Java (Servlet), then you can just send them as multiple parameters with the same name. The API usually offers a dedicated method to obtain multiple parameter values as an array.

foo=value1&foo=value2&foo=value3
String[] foo = request.getParameterValues("foo"); // [value1, value2, value3]

The request.getParameter("foo") will also work on it, but it'll return only the first value.

String foo = request.getParameter("foo"); // value1

And, when the target server uses a weak typed language like PHP or RoR, then you need to suffix the parameter name with braces [] in order to trigger the language to return an array of values instead of a single value.

foo[]=value1&foo[]=value2&foo[]=value3
$foo = $_GET["foo"]; // [value1, value2, value3]
echo is_array($foo); // true

In case you still use foo=value1&foo=value2&foo=value3, then it'll return only the first value.

$foo = $_GET["foo"]; // value1
echo is_array($foo); // false

Do note that when you send foo[]=value1&foo[]=value2&foo[]=value3 to a Java Servlet, then you can still obtain them, but you'd need to use the exact parameter name including the braces.

String[] foo = request.getParameterValues("foo[]"); // [value1, value2, value3]

How to make all controls resize accordingly proportionally when window is maximized?

Just thought i'd share this with anyone who needs more clarity on how to achieve this:

myCanvas is a Canvas control and Parent to all other controllers. This code works to neatly resize to any resolution from 1366 x 768 upward. Tested up to 4k resolution 4096 x 2160

Take note of all the MainWindow property settings (WindowStartupLocation, SizeToContent and WindowState) - important for this to work correctly - WindowState for my user case requirement was Maximized

What does git rev-parse do?

git rev-parse is an ancillary plumbing command primarily used for manipulation.

One common usage of git rev-parse is to print the SHA1 hashes given a revision specifier. In addition, it has various options to format this output such as --short for printing a shorter unique SHA1.

There are other use cases as well (in scripts and other tools built on top of git) that I've used for:

  • --verify to verify that the specified object is a valid git object.
  • --git-dir for displaying the abs/relative path of the the .git directory.
  • Checking if you're currently within a repository using --is-inside-git-dir or within a work-tree using --is-inside-work-tree
  • Checking if the repo is a bare using --is-bare-repository
  • Printing SHA1 hashes of branches (--branches), tags (--tags) and the refs can also be filtered based on the remote (using --remote)
  • --parse-opt to normalize arguments in a script (kind of similar to getopt) and print an output string that can be used with eval

Massage just implies that it is possible to convert the info from one form into another i.e. a transformation command. These are some quick examples I can think of:

  • a branch or tag name into the commit's SHA1 it is pointing to so that it can be passed to a plumbing command which only accepts SHA1 values for the commit.
  • a revision range A..B for git log or git diff into the equivalent arguments for the underlying plumbing command as B ^A

Displaying one div on top of another

Use CSS position: absolute; followed by top: 0px; left 0px; in the style attribute of each DIV. Replace the pixel values with whatever you want.

You can use z-index: x; to set the vertical "order" (which one is "on top"). Replace x with a number, higher numbers are on top of lower numbers.

Here is how your new code would look:

<div>
  <div id="backdrop" style="z-index: 1; position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px;"><img alt="" src='/backdrop.png' /></div>
  <div id="curtain" style="z-index: 2; position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; background-image:url(/curtain.png);background-position:100px 200px; height:250px; width:500px;">&nbsp;</div>
</div>

Explode PHP string by new line

PHP_EOL is ostensibly used to find the newline character in a cross-platform-compatible way, so it handles DOS/Unix issues.

Try this:

$myString = "Prepare yourself to be caught
You in the hood gettin' shot
We going throw hell of blows
got my whole frame froze";

$myArray = explode(PHP_EOL, $myString);

print_r($myArray);

Array vs. Object efficiency in JavaScript

I had a similar problem that I am facing where I need to store live candlesticks from an event source limited to x items. I could have them stored in an object where the timestamp of each candle would act as the key and the candle itself would act as the value. Another possibility was that I could store it in an array where each item was the candle itself. One problem about live candles is that they keep sending updates on the same timestamp where the latest update holds the most recent data therefore you either update an existing item or add a new one. So here is a nice benchmark that attempts to combine all 3 possibilities. Arrays in the solution below are atleast 4x faster on average. Feel free to play

"use strict";

const EventEmitter = require("events");
let candleEmitter = new EventEmitter();

//Change this to set how fast the setInterval should run
const frequency = 1;

setInterval(() => {
    // Take the current timestamp and round it down to the nearest second
    let time = Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000) * 1000;
    let open = Math.random();
    let high = Math.random();
    let low = Math.random();
    let close = Math.random();
    let baseVolume = Math.random();
    let quoteVolume = Math.random();

    //Clear the console everytime before printing fresh values
    console.clear()

    candleEmitter.emit("candle", {
        symbol: "ABC:DEF",
        time: time,
        open: open,
        high: high,
        low: low,
        close: close,
        baseVolume: baseVolume,
        quoteVolume: quoteVolume
    });

}, frequency)

// Test 1 would involve storing the candle in an object
candleEmitter.on('candle', storeAsObject)

// Test 2 would involve storing the candle in an array

Conclusion 10 is the limit here

Storing as objects 4183 nanoseconds 10
Storing as array 373 nanoseconds 10

AngularJS: Uncaught Error: [$injector:modulerr] Failed to instantiate module?

I had to change the js file, so to include "function()" at the beginning of it, and also "()" at the end line. That solved the problem

Edit existing excel workbooks and sheets with xlrd and xlwt

As I wrote in the edits of the op, to edit existing excel documents you must use the xlutils module (Thanks Oliver)

Here is the proper way to do it:

#xlrd, xlutils and xlwt modules need to be installed.
#Can be done via pip install <module>
from xlrd import open_workbook
from xlutils.copy import copy

rb = open_workbook("names.xls")
wb = copy(rb)

s = wb.get_sheet(0)
s.write(0,0,'A1')
wb.save('names.xls')

This replaces the contents of the cell located at a1 in the first sheet of "names.xls" with the text "a1", and then saves the document.

How can labels/legends be added for all chart types in chart.js (chartjs.org)?

Strangely, I didn't find anything about legends and labels in the Chart.js documentation. It seems like you can't do it with chart.js alone.

I used https://github.com/bebraw/Chart.js.legend which is extremely light, to generate the legends.

'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown when there is still plenty of memory free

You may want to read this: "“Out Of Memory” Does Not Refer to Physical Memory" by Eric Lippert.

In short, and very simplified, "Out of memory" does not really mean that the amount of available memory is too small. The most common reason is that within the current address space, there is no contiguous portion of memory that is large enough to serve the wanted allocation. If you have 100 blocks, each 4 MB large, that is not going to help you when you need one 5 MB block.

Key Points:

  • the data storage that we call “process memory” is in my opinion best visualized as a massive file on disk.
  • RAM can be seen as merely a performance optimization
  • Total amount of virtual memory your program consumes is really not hugely relevant to its performance
  • "running out of RAM" seldom results in an “out of memory” error. Instead of an error, it results in bad performance because the full cost of the fact that storage is actually on disk suddenly becomes relevant.

difference between @size(max = value ) and @min(value) @max(value)

@Min and @Max are used for validating numeric fields which could be String(representing number), int, short, byte etc and their respective primitive wrappers.

@Size is used to check the length constraints on the fields.

As per documentation @Size supports String, Collection, Map and arrays while @Min and @Max supports primitives and their wrappers. See the documentation.

Convert a date format in epoch

tl;dr

ZonedDateTime.parse(
                        "Jun 13 2003 23:11:52.454 UTC" ,
                        DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern ( "MMM d uuuu HH:mm:ss.SSS z" )
                    )
              .toInstant()
              .toEpochMilli()

This Answer expands on the Answer by Lockni.

DateTimeFormatter

First define a formatting pattern to match your input string by creating a DateTimeFormatter object.

String input = "Jun 13 2003 23:11:52.454 UTC";
DateTimeFormatter f = DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern ( "MMM d uuuu HH:mm:ss.SSS z" );

ZonedDateTime

Parse the string as a ZonedDateTime. You can think of that class as: ( Instant + ZoneId ).

ZonedDateTime zdt = ZonedDateTime.parse ( "Jun 13 2003 23:11:52.454 UTC" , f );

zdt.toString(): 2003-06-13T23:11:52.454Z[UTC]

Table of types of date-time classes in modern java.time versus legacy.

Count-from-epoch

I do not recommend tracking date-time values as a count-from-epoch. Doing so makes debugging tricky as humans cannot discern a meaningful date-time from a number so invalid/unexpected values may slip by. Also such counts are ambiguous, in granularity (whole seconds, milli, micro, nano, etc.) and in epoch (at least two dozen in by various computer systems).

But if you insist you can get a count of milliseconds from the epoch of first moment of 1970 in UTC (1970-01-01T00:00:00) through the Instant class. Be aware this means data-loss as you are truncating any nanoseconds to milliseconds.

Instant instant = zdt.toInstant ();

instant.toString(): 2003-06-13T23:11:52.454Z

long millisSinceEpoch = instant.toEpochMilli() ;

About java.time

The java.time framework is built into Java 8 and later. These classes supplant the troublesome old legacy date-time classes such as java.util.Date, Calendar, & SimpleDateFormat.

To learn more, see the Oracle Tutorial. And search Stack Overflow for many examples and explanations. Specification is JSR 310.

The Joda-Time project, now in maintenance mode, advises migration to the java.time classes.

You may exchange java.time objects directly with your database. Use a JDBC driver compliant with JDBC 4.2 or later. No need for strings, no need for java.sql.* classes.

Where to obtain the java.time classes?

The ThreeTen-Extra project extends java.time with additional classes. This project is a proving ground for possible future additions to java.time. You may find some useful classes here such as Interval, YearWeek, YearQuarter, and more.

Use querystring variables in MVC controller

I figured it out...finally found another article on it.

string start = Request.QueryString["start"];

string end = Request.QueryString["end"];

How to get the day name from a selected date?

If you want to know the day of the week for your code to do something with it, DateTime.Now.DayOfWeek will do the job.

If you want to display the day of week to the user, DateTime.Now.ToString("dddd") will give you the localized day name, according to the current culture (MSDN info on the "dddd" format string).

How to use OAuth2RestTemplate?

I have different approach if you want access token and make call to other resource system with access token in header

Spring Security comes with automatic security: oauth2 properties access from application.yml file for every request and every request has SESSIONID which it reads and pull user info via Principal, so you need to make sure inject Principal in OAuthUser and get accessToken and make call to resource server

This is your application.yml, change according to your auth server:

security:
  oauth2:
    client:
      clientId: 233668646673605

How to refresh datagrid in WPF

Try mydatagrid.Items.Refresh()

MySQL with Node.js

node-mysql is probably one of the best modules out there used for working with MySQL database which is actively maintained and well documented.

What does 'URI has an authority component' mean?

I found out that the URL of the application conflicted with a module in the Sun GlassFish. So, in the file sun-web.xml I renamed the <context-root>/servlets-samples</context-root>.

It is now working.

Adding a HTTP header to the Angular HttpClient doesn't send the header, why?

The instances of the new HttpHeader class are immutable objects. Invoking class methods will return a new instance as result. So basically, you need to do the following:

let headers = new HttpHeaders();
headers = headers.set('Content-Type', 'application/json; charset=utf-8');

or

const headers = new HttpHeaders({'Content-Type':'application/json; charset=utf-8'});

Update: adding multiple headers

let headers = new HttpHeaders();
headers = headers.set('h1', 'v1').set('h2','v2');

or

const headers = new HttpHeaders({'h1':'v1','h2':'v2'});

Update: accept object map for HttpClient headers & params

Since 5.0.0-beta.6 is now possible to skip the creation of a HttpHeaders object an directly pass an object map as argument. So now its possible to do the following:

http.get('someurl',{
   headers: {'header1':'value1','header2':'value2'}
});

Manually install Gradle and use it in Android Studio

I used like this,

distributionUrl=file\:///E\:/Android/Gradle/gradle-5.4.1-all.zip

And its worked for me.

Displaying Image in Java

If you want to load/process/display images I suggest you use an image processing framework. Using Marvin, for instance, you can do that easily with just a few lines of source code.

Source code:

public class Example extends JFrame{

    MarvinImagePlugin prewitt           = MarvinPluginLoader.loadImagePlugin("org.marvinproject.image.edge.prewitt");
    MarvinImagePlugin errorDiffusion    = MarvinPluginLoader.loadImagePlugin("org.marvinproject.image.halftone.errorDiffusion");
    MarvinImagePlugin emboss            = MarvinPluginLoader.loadImagePlugin("org.marvinproject.image.color.emboss");

    public Example(){
        super("Example");

        // Layout
        setLayout(new GridLayout(2,2));

        // Load images
        MarvinImage img1 = MarvinImageIO.loadImage("./res/car.jpg");
        MarvinImage img2 = new MarvinImage(img1.getWidth(), img1.getHeight());
        MarvinImage img3 = new MarvinImage(img1.getWidth(), img1.getHeight());
        MarvinImage img4 = new MarvinImage(img1.getWidth(), img1.getHeight());

        // Image Processing plug-ins
        errorDiffusion.process(img1, img2);
        prewitt.process(img1, img3);
        emboss.process(img1, img4);

        // Set panels
        addPanel(img1);
        addPanel(img2);
        addPanel(img3);
        addPanel(img4);

        setSize(560,380);
        setVisible(true);
    }

    public void addPanel(MarvinImage image){
        MarvinImagePanel imagePanel = new MarvinImagePanel();
        imagePanel.setImage(image);
        add(imagePanel);
    }

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        new Example().setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    }
}

jquery draggable: how to limit the draggable area?

See excerpt from official documentation for containment option:

containment

Default: false

Constrains dragging to within the bounds of the specified element or region.
Multiple types supported:

  • Selector: The draggable element will be contained to the bounding box of the first element found by the selector. If no element is found, no containment will be set.
  • Element: The draggable element will be contained to the bounding box of this element.
  • String: Possible values: "parent", "document", "window".
  • Array: An array defining a bounding box in the form [ x1, y1, x2, y2 ].

Code examples:
Initialize the draggable with the containment option specified:

$( ".selector" ).draggable({
    containment: "parent"
});

Get or set the containment option, after initialization:

// Getter
var containment = $( ".selector" ).draggable( "option", "containment" );
// Setter
$( ".selector" ).draggable( "option", "containment", "parent" );

How to configure slf4j-simple

I noticed that Eemuli said that you can't change the log level after they are created - and while that might be the design, it isn't entirely true.

I ran into a situation where I was using a library that logged to slf4j - and I was using the library while writing a maven mojo plugin.

Maven uses a (hacked) version of the slf4j SimpleLogger, and I was unable to get my plugin code to reroute its logging to something like log4j, which I could control.

And I can't change the maven logging config.

So, to quiet down some noisy info messages, I found I could use reflection like this, to futz with the SimpleLogger at runtime.

import org.slf4j.Logger;
import org.slf4j.LoggerFactory;
import org.slf4j.spi.LocationAwareLogger;
    try
    {
        Logger l = LoggerFactory.getLogger("full.classname.of.noisy.logger"); //This is actually a MavenSimpleLogger, but due to various classloader issues, can't work with the directly.
        Field f = l.getClass().getSuperclass().getDeclaredField("currentLogLevel");
        f.setAccessible(true);
        f.set(l, LocationAwareLogger.WARN_INT);
    }
    catch (Exception e)
    {
        getLog().warn("Failed to reset the log level of " + loggerName + ", it will continue being noisy.", e);
    }

Of course, note, this isn't a very stable / reliable solution... as it will break the next time the maven folks change their logger.

Java get String CompareTo as a comparator object

This is a generic Comparator for any kind of Comparable object, not just String:

package util;

import java.util.Comparator;

/**
 * The Default Comparator for classes implementing Comparable.
 *
 * @param <E> the type of the comparable objects.
 *
 * @author Michael Belivanakis (michael.gr)
 */
public final class DefaultComparator<E extends Comparable<E>> implements Comparator<E>
{
    @SuppressWarnings( "rawtypes" )
    private static final DefaultComparator<?> INSTANCE = new DefaultComparator();

    /**
     * Get an instance of DefaultComparator for any type of Comparable.
     *
     * @param <T> the type of Comparable of interest.
     *
     * @return an instance of DefaultComparator for comparing instances of the requested type.
     */
    public static <T extends Comparable<T>> Comparator<T> getInstance()
    {
        @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
        Comparator<T> result = (Comparator<T>)INSTANCE;
        return result;
    }

    private DefaultComparator()
    {
    }

    @Override
    public int compare( E o1, E o2 )
    {
        if( o1 == o2 )
            return 0;
        if( o1 == null )
            return 1;
        if( o2 == null )
            return -1;
        return o1.compareTo( o2 );
    }
}

How to use with String:

Comparator<String> stringComparator = DefaultComparator.getInstance();

How to create a BKS (BouncyCastle) format Java Keystore that contains a client certificate chain

Not sure you resolved this issue or not, but this is how I do it and it works on Android:

  1. Use openssl to merge client's cert(cert must be signed by a CA that accepted by server) and private key into a PCKS12 format key pair: openssl pkcs12 -export -in clientcert.pem -inkey clientkey.pem -out client.p12
  2. You may need patch your JRE to umlimited strength encryption depends on your key strength: copy the jar files fromJCE 5.0 unlimited strength Jurisdiction Policy FIles and override those in your JRE (eg.C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\security)
  3. Use Portecle tool mentioned above and create a new keystore with BKS format
  4. Import PCKS12 key pair generated in step 1 and save it as BKS keystore. This keystore works with Android client authentication.
  5. If you need to do certificate chain, you can use this IBM tool:KeyMan to merge client's PCKS12 key pair with CA cert. But it only generate JKS keystore, so you again need Protecle to convert it to BKS format.

Is there a way to have printf() properly print out an array (of floats, say)?

You have to loop through the array and printf() each element:

for(int i=0;i<10;++i) {
  printf("%.2f ", foo[i]);
}

printf("\n");

Changing plot scale by a factor in matplotlib

As you have noticed, xscale and yscale does not support a simple linear re-scaling (unfortunately). As an alternative to Hooked's answer, instead of messing with the data, you can trick the labels like so:

ticks = ticker.FuncFormatter(lambda x, pos: '{0:g}'.format(x*scale))
ax.xaxis.set_major_formatter(ticks)

A complete example showing both x and y scaling:

import numpy as np
import pylab as plt
import matplotlib.ticker as ticker

# Generate data
x = np.linspace(0, 1e-9)
y = 1e3*np.sin(2*np.pi*x/1e-9) # one period, 1k amplitude

# setup figures
fig = plt.figure()
ax1 = fig.add_subplot(121)
ax2 = fig.add_subplot(122)
# plot two identical plots
ax1.plot(x, y)
ax2.plot(x, y)

# Change only ax2
scale_x = 1e-9
scale_y = 1e3
ticks_x = ticker.FuncFormatter(lambda x, pos: '{0:g}'.format(x/scale_x))
ax2.xaxis.set_major_formatter(ticks_x)

ticks_y = ticker.FuncFormatter(lambda x, pos: '{0:g}'.format(x/scale_y))
ax2.yaxis.set_major_formatter(ticks_y)

ax1.set_xlabel("meters")
ax1.set_ylabel('volt')
ax2.set_xlabel("nanometers")
ax2.set_ylabel('kilovolt')

plt.show()

And finally I have the credits for a picture:

Left: ax1 no scaling, right: ax2 y axis scaled to kilo and x axis scaled to nano

Note that, if you have text.usetex: true as I have, you may want to enclose the labels in $, like so: '${0:g}$'.

How to declare a variable in a template in Angular

update 3

Issue 2451 is fixed in Angular 4.0.0

See also

update 2

This isn't supported.

There are template variables but it's not supported to assign arbitrary values. They can only be used to refer to the elements they are applied to, exported names of directives or components and scope variables for structural directives like ngFor,

See also https://github.com/angular/angular/issues/2451

Update 1

@Directive({
  selector: '[var]',
  exportAs: 'var'
})
class VarDirective {
  @Input() var:any;
}

and initialize it like

<div #aVariable="var" var="abc"></div>

or

<div #aVariable="var" [var]="'abc'"></div>

and use the variable like

<div>{{aVariable.var}}</div>

(not tested)

  • #aVariable creates a reference to the VarDirective (exportAs: 'var')
  • var="abc" instantiates the VarDirective and passes the string value "abc" to it's value input.
  • aVariable.var reads the value assigned to the var directives var input.

Can’t delete docker image with dependent child images

What worked to me was to use the REPOSITORY:TAG combination rather than IMAGE ID.

When I tried to delete a docker image with the command docker rmi <IMAGE ID> with no containers associated with this image I had the message:

$ docker rmi 3f66bec2c6bf
Error response from daemon: conflict: unable to delete 3f66bec2c6bf (cannot be forced) - image has dependent child images

I could delete with success when I used the command docker rmi RPOSITORY:TAG

$ docker rmi ubuntu:18.04v1
Untagged: ubuntu:18.04v1

Doctrine findBy 'does not equal'

There is now a an approach to do this, using Doctrine's Criteria.

A full example can be seen in How to use a findBy method with comparative criteria, but a brief answer follows.

use \Doctrine\Common\Collections\Criteria;

// Add a not equals parameter to your criteria
$criteria = new Criteria();
$criteria->where(Criteria::expr()->neq('prize', 200));

// Find all from the repository matching your criteria
$result = $entityRepository->matching($criteria);

onKeyPress Vs. onKeyUp and onKeyDown

This article by Jan Wolter is the best piece I have came across, you can find the archived copy here if link is dead.

It explains all browser key events really well,

The keydown event occurs when the key is pressed, followed immediately by the keypress event. Then the keyup event is generated when the key is released.

To understand the difference between keydown and keypress, it is useful to distinguish between characters and keys. A key is a physical button on the computer's keyboard. A character is a symbol typed by pressing a button. On a US keyboard, hitting the 4 key while holding down the Shift key typically produces a "dollar sign" character. This is not necessarily the case on every keyboard in the world. In theory, the keydown and keyup events represent keys being pressed or released, while the keypress event represents a character being typed. In practice, this is not always the way it is implemented.

For a while, some browers fired an additional event, called textInput, immediately after keypress. Early versions of the DOM 3 standard intended this as a replacement for the keypress event, but the whole notion was later revoked. Webkit supported this between versions 525 and 533, and I'm told IE supported it, but I never detected that, possibly because Webkit required it to be called textInput while IE called it textinput.

There is also an event called input, supported by all browsers, which is fired just after a change is made to to a textarea or input field. Typically keypress will fire, then the typed character will appear in the text area, then input will fire. The input event doesn't actually give any information about what key was typed - you'd have to inspect the textbox to figure it out what changed - so we don't really consider it a key event and don't really document it here. Though it was originally defined only for textareas and input boxes, I believe there is some movement toward generalizing it to fire on other types of objects as well.

Get the value of checked checkbox?

For modern browsers:

var checkedValue = document.querySelector('.messageCheckbox:checked').value;

By using jQuery:

var checkedValue = $('.messageCheckbox:checked').val();

Pure javascript without jQuery:

var checkedValue = null;
var inputElements = document.getElementsByClassName('messageCheckbox');
for(var i=0; inputElements[i]; ++i){
      if(inputElements[i].checked){
           checkedValue = inputElements[i].value;
           break;
      }
}

Print to the same line and not a new line?

This works for me, hacked it once to see if it is possible, but never actually used in my program (GUI is so much nicer):

import time
f = '%4i %%'
len_to_clear = len(f)+1
clear = '\x08'* len_to_clear
print 'Progress in percent:'+' '*(len_to_clear),
for i in range(123):
    print clear+f % (i*100//123),
    time.sleep(0.4)
raw_input('\nDone')

RSA stands for Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard Adleman.

Using python PIL to turn a RGB image into a pure black and white image

A PIL only solution for creating a bi-level (black and white) image with a custom threshold:

from PIL import Image
img = Image.open('mB96s.png')
thresh = 200
fn = lambda x : 255 if x > thresh else 0
r = img.convert('L').point(fn, mode='1')
r.save('foo.png')

With just

r = img.convert('1')
r.save('foo.png')

you get a dithered image.

From left to right the input image, the black and white conversion result and the dithered result:

Input Image Black and White Result Dithered Result

You can click on the images to view the unscaled versions.

Remove part of a string

Use regular expressions. In this case, you can use gsub:

gsub("^.*?_","_","ATGAS_1121")
[1] "_1121"

This regular expression matches the beginning of the string (^), any character (.) repeated zero or more times (*), and underscore (_). The ? makes the match "lazy" so that it only matches are far as the first underscore. That match is replaced with just an underscore. See ?regex for more details and references

PostgreSQL psql terminal command

Insert data through ajax into mysql database

The ajax is going to be a javascript snippet that passes information to a small php file that does what you want. So in your page, instead of all that php, you want a little javascript, preferable jquery:

function fun()
{
    $.get('\addEmail.php', {email : $(this).val()}, function(data) {
        //here you would write the "you ve been successfully subscribed" div
    });
}

also you input would have to be:

<input type="button" value="subscribe" class="submit" onclick="fun();" />

last the file addEmail.php should look something like:

mysql_connect("localhost","root","");
mysql_select_db("eciticket_db");

error_reporting(E_ALL && ~E_NOTICE);

$email=mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['email']);
$sql="INSERT INTO newsletter_email(email) VALUES ('$email')";
$result=mysql_query($sql);
if($result){
echo "You have been successfully subscribed.";
}
 if(!$sql)
die(mysql_error());

mysql_close();

Also sergey is right, you should use mysqli. That's not everything, but enough to get you started.

How do I see which version of Swift I'm using?

This reddit post helped me: https://www.reddit.com/r/swift/comments/4o8atc/xcode_8_which_swift/d4anpet

Xcode 8 uses Swift 3.0 as default. But you can turn on Swift 2.3. Go to project's Build Settings and set 'Use Legacy Swift Language Version' to YES.

Are there any log file about Windows Services Status?

Through the Computer management console, navigate through Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System. Every services that change state will be logged here.

You'll see info like: The XXXX service entered the running state or The XXXX service entered the stopped state, etc.

How to exit an if clause

So here i understand you're trying to break out of the outer if code block

if some_condition:
    ...
    if condition_a:
       # do something
       # and then exit the outer if block
       ...
    if condition_b:
       # do something
       # and then exit the outer if block
# more code here

One way out of this is that you can test for for a false condition in the outer if block, which will then implicitly exit out of the code block, you then use an else block to nest the other ifs to do something

if test_for_false:
    # Exit the code(which is the outer if code)

else:
    if condition_a:
        # Do something

    if condition_b:
        # Do something

Setting the focus to a text field

For me the easiest way to get it to work, is to put the component.requestFocus(); line, after the setVisible(true); line, at the bottom of your frame or panel constructor.

This probably has something to do with asking for the focus, after all components have been created, because creating a new component, after asking for the focus request, will make your component loose te focus, and make the focus go to your newly created component. At least, that's what I assume.

Eclipse reported "Failed to load JNI shared library"

Yep, in Windows 7 64 bit you have C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86). You can find Java folders in both of them, but you must add C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin to environment variable PATH.

z-index not working with position absolute

z-index only applies to elements that have been given an explicit position. Add position:relative to #popupContent and you should be good to go.

Getting NetworkCredential for current user (C#)

If the web service being invoked uses windows integrated security, creating a NetworkCredential from the current WindowsIdentity should be sufficient to allow the web service to use the current users windows login. However, if the web service uses a different security model, there isn't any way to extract a users password from the current identity ... that in and of itself would be insecure, allowing you, the developer, to steal your users passwords. You will likely need to provide some way for your user to provide their password, and keep it in some secure cache if you don't want them to have to repeatedly provide it.

Edit: To get the credentials for the current identity, use the following:

Uri uri = new Uri("http://tempuri.org/");
ICredentials credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
NetworkCredential credential = credentials.GetCredential(uri, "Basic");

Validating IPv4 addresses with regexp

Try this:

\b(([1-9]|[1-9][0-9]|1[0-9][0-9]|2[0-5][0-5])\.([1-9]|[1-9][0-9]|1[0-9][0-9]|2[0-5][0-5])\.([1-9]|[1-9][0-9]|1[0-9][0-9]|2[0-5][0-5])\.(2[0-5][0-5]|1[0-9][0-9]|[1-9][0-9]|[1-9]))\b

Why is "1000000000000000 in range(1000000000000001)" so fast in Python 3?

The other answers explained it well already, but I'd like to offer another experiment illustrating the nature of range objects:

>>> r = range(5)
>>> for i in r:
        print(i, 2 in r, list(r))

0 True [0, 1, 2, 3, 4]
1 True [0, 1, 2, 3, 4]
2 True [0, 1, 2, 3, 4]
3 True [0, 1, 2, 3, 4]
4 True [0, 1, 2, 3, 4]

As you can see, a range object is an object that remembers its range and can be used many times (even while iterating over it), not just a one-time generator.

How to get filename without extension from file path in Ruby

Jonathon's answer is better, but to let you know somelist[-1] is one of the LastIndexOf notations available.

As krusty.ar mentioned somelist.last apparently is too.

irb(main):003:0* f = 'C:\\path\\file.txt'
irb(main):007:0> f.split('\\')

Linq to SQL .Sum() without group ... into

Try:

itemsCard.ToList().Select(c=>c.Price).Sum();

Actually this would perform better:

var itemsInCart = from o in db.OrderLineItems
              where o.OrderId == currentOrder.OrderId
              select new { o.WishListItem.Price };
var sum = itemsCard.ToList().Select(c=>c.Price).Sum();

Because you'll only be retrieving one column from the database.

How can I select the record with the 2nd highest salary in database Oracle?

select * from emp where sal=(select max(sal) from emp where sal<(select max(sal) from emp))

so in our emp table(default provided by oracle) here is the output

Ajax call Into MVC Controller- Url Issue

starting from mihai-labo's answer, why not skip declaring the requrl variable altogether and put the url generating code directly in front of "url:", like:

 $.ajax({
    type: "POST",
    url: '@Url.Action("Action", "Controller", null, Request.Url.Scheme, null)',
    data: "{queryString:'" + searchVal + "'}",
    contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
    dataType: "html",
    success: function (data) {
        alert("here" + data.d.toString());
    }
});

How to check if std::map contains a key without doing insert?

Potatoswatter's answer is all right, but I prefer to use find or lower_bound instead. lower_bound is especially useful because the iterator returned can subsequently be used for a hinted insertion, should you wish to insert something with the same key.

map<K, V>::iterator iter(my_map.lower_bound(key));
if (iter == my_map.end() || key < iter->first) {    // not found
    // ...
    my_map.insert(iter, make_pair(key, value));     // hinted insertion
} else {
    // ... use iter->second here
}

How do I schedule a task to run at periodic intervals?

What is the difference between primary, unique and foreign key constraints, and indexes?

Primary Key and Unique Key are Entity integrity constraints

Primary key allows each row in a table to be uniquely identified and ensures that no duplicate rows exist and no null values are entered.

Unique key constraint is used to prevent the duplication of key values within the rows of a table and allow null values. (In oracle one null is not equal to another null).

  • KEY or INDEX refers to a normal non-unique index. Non-distinct values for the index are allowed, so the index may contain rows with identical values in all columns of the index. These indexes don't enforce any structure on your data so they are used only for speeding up queries.
  • UNIQUE refers to an index where all rows of the index must be unique. That is, the same row may not have identical non-NULL values for all columns in this index as another row. As well as being used to speed up queries, UNIQUE indexes can be used to enforce structure on data, because the database system does not allow this distinct values rule to be broken when inserting or updating data. Your database system may allow a UNIQUE index on columns which allow NULL values, in which case two rows are allowed to be identical if they both contain a NULL value (NULL is considered not equal to itself), though this is probably undesirable depending on your application.
  • PRIMARY acts exactly like a UNIQUE index, except that it is always named 'PRIMARY', and there may be only one on a table (and there should always be one; though some database systems don't enforce this). A PRIMARY index is intended as a way to uniquely identify any row in the table, so it shouldn't be used on any columns which allow NULL values. Your PRIMARY index should always be on the smallest number of columns that are sufficient to uniquely identify a row. Often, this is just one column containing a unique auto-incremented number, but if there is anything else that can uniquely identify a row, such as "countrycode" in a list of countries, you can use that instead.
  • FULLTEXT indexes are different to all of the above, and their behaviour differs more between database systems. Unlike the above three, which are typically b-tree (allowing for selecting, sorting or ranges starting from left most column) or hash (allowing for selection starting from left most column), FULLTEXT indexes are only useful for full text searches done with the MATCH() / AGAINST() clause.

Is it possible to cherry-pick a commit from another git repository?

You can do it in one line as following. Hope you are in git repository which need the cherry-picked change and you have checked out to correct branch.

git fetch ssh://[email protected]:7999/repo_to_get_it_from.git branchToPickFrom && git cherry-pick 02a197e9533
#

git fetch [branch URL] [Branch to cherry-pick from] && git cherry-pick [commit ID]

numpy.where() detailed, step-by-step explanation / examples

Here is a little more fun. I've found that very often NumPy does exactly what I wish it would do - sometimes it's faster for me to just try things than it is to read the docs. Actually a mixture of both is best.

I think your answer is fine (and it's OK to accept it if you like). This is just "extra".

import numpy as np

a = np.arange(4,10).reshape(2,3)

wh = np.where(a>7)
gt = a>7
x  = np.where(gt)

print "wh: ", wh
print "gt: ", gt
print "x:  ", x

gives:

wh:  (array([1, 1]), array([1, 2]))
gt:  [[False False False]
      [False  True  True]]
x:   (array([1, 1]), array([1, 2]))

... but:

print "a[wh]: ", a[wh]
print "a[gt]  ", a[gt]
print "a[x]:  ", a[x]

gives:

a[wh]:  [8 9]
a[gt]   [8 9]
a[x]:   [8 9]

How can I start an interactive console for Perl?

Not only did Matt Trout write an article about a REPL, he actually wrote one - Devel::REPL

I've used it a bit and it works fairly well, and it's under active development.

BTW, I have no idea why someone modded down the person who mentioned using "perl -e" from the console. This isn't really a REPL, true, but it's fantastically useful, and I use it all the time.

jQuery append() vs appendChild()

append is a jQuery method to append some content or HTML to an element.

$('#example').append('Some text or HTML');

appendChild is a pure DOM method for adding a child element.

document.getElementById('example').appendChild(newElement);

The real difference between "int" and "unsigned int"

The problem is that you invoked Undefined Behaviour.

When you invoke UB anything can happen.

The assignments are ok; there is an implicit conversion in the first line

int x = 0xFFFFFFFF;
unsigned int y = 0xFFFFFFFF;

However, the call to printf, is not ok

printf("%d, %d, %u, %u", x, y, x, y);

It is UB to mismatch the % specifier and the type of the argument.
In your case you specify 2 ints and 2 unsigned ints in this order by provide 1 int, 1 unsigned int, 1 int, and 1 unsigned int.

Don't do UB!

javascript : sending custom parameters with window.open() but its not working

To concatenate strings, use the + operator.

To insert data into a URI, encode it for URIs.

Bad:

var url = "http://localhost:8080/login?cid='username'&pwd='password'"

Good:

var url_safe_username = encodeURIComponent(username);
var url_safe_password = encodeURIComponent(password);
var url = "http://localhost:8080/login?cid=" + url_safe_username + "&pwd=" + url_safe_password;

The server will have to process the query string to make use of the data. You can't assign to arbitrary form fields.

… but don't trigger new windows or pass credentials in the URI (where they are exposed to over the shoulder attacks and may be logged).

How do I use the Tensorboard callback of Keras?

If you are using google-colab simple visualization of the graph would be :

import tensorboardcolab as tb

tbc = tb.TensorBoardColab()
tensorboard = tb.TensorBoardColabCallback(tbc)

history = model.fit(x_train,# Features
                    y_train, # Target vector
                    batch_size=batch_size, # Number of observations per batch
                    epochs=epochs, # Number of epochs
                    callbacks=[early_stopping, tensorboard], # Early stopping
                    verbose=1, # Print description after each epoch
                    validation_split=0.2, #used for validation set every each epoch
                    validation_data=(x_test, y_test)) # Test data-set to evaluate the model in the end of training

Easy way to concatenate two byte arrays

If you don't want to mess with arrays' sizes, just use the magic of string concatenation:

byte[] c = (new String(a, "l1") + new String(b, "l1")).getBytes("l1");

Or define somewhere in your code

// concatenation charset
static final java.nio.charset.Charset cch = java.nio.charset.StandardCharsets.ISO_8859_1;

and use

byte[] c = (new String(a, cch) + new String(b, cch)).getBytes(cch);

This, of course, also works with more than two string concatenations using the + addition operator.

Both "l1" and ISO_8859_1 indicate the Western Latin 1 character set that encodes each character as a single byte. As no multi-byte translations are performed the characters in the string will have the same values as the bytes (except that they will always be interpreted as positive values, as char is unsigned). At least for the Oracle provided runtime, any byte will therefore be correctly "decoded" and then "encoded" again.

Beware that strings do expand the byte array considerately, requiring additional memory. Strings may also be interned and will therefore not easy be removed. Strings are also immutable, so the values inside them cannot be destroyed. You should therefore not concatenate sensitive arrays this way nor should you use this method for larger byte arrays. Giving a clear indication of what you are doing would also be required, as this method of array concatenation is not a common solution.

Reset push notification settings for app

As ianolito said, setting the date should work:

You can achieve the latter without actually waiting a day by setting the system clock forward a day or more, turning the device off completely, then turning the device back on.

I noticed on my device (iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.2) setting the system clock a day forward or even a few days did not work for me. So I set the date forward a month and then it did work and my application showed the notifications prompt again.

Hope this helps for anyone, it can be kind of head aching!

sed: print only matching group

The cut command is designed for this exact situation. It will "cut" on any delimiter and then you can specify which chunks should be output.

For instance: echo "foo bar <foo> bla 1 2 3.4" | cut -d " " -f 6-7

Will result in output of: 2 3.4

-d sets the delimiter

-f selects the range of 'fields' to output, in this case, it's the 6th through 7th chunks of the original string. You can also specify the range as a list, such as 6,7.

Is it possible to use the instanceof operator in a switch statement?

You can't. The switch statement can only contain case statements which are compile time constants and which evaluate to an integer (Up to Java 6 and a string in Java 7).

What you are looking for is called "pattern matching" in functional programming.

Complex one: using nth-child selector in CSS and specify special padding values for these two, which works in modern browsers.

SQL Client for Mac OS X that works with MS SQL Server

This will be the second question in a row I've answered with this, so I think it's worth pointing out that I have no affiliation with this product, but I use it and love it and think it's the right answer to this question too: DbVisualizer.

Why is “while ( !feof (file) )” always wrong?

It's wrong because (in the absence of a read error) it enters the loop one more time than the author expects. If there is a read error, the loop never terminates.

Consider the following code:

/* WARNING: demonstration of bad coding technique!! */

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

FILE *Fopen(const char *path, const char *mode);

int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
    FILE *in;
    unsigned count;

    in = argc > 1 ? Fopen(argv[1], "r") : stdin;
    count = 0;

    /* WARNING: this is a bug */
    while( !feof(in) ) {  /* This is WRONG! */
        fgetc(in);
        count++;
    }
    printf("Number of characters read: %u\n", count);
    return EXIT_SUCCESS;
}

FILE * Fopen(const char *path, const char *mode)
{
    FILE *f = fopen(path, mode);
    if( f == NULL ) {
        perror(path);
        exit(EXIT_FAILURE);
    }
    return f;
}

This program will consistently print one greater than the number of characters in the input stream (assuming no read errors). Consider the case where the input stream is empty:

$ ./a.out < /dev/null
Number of characters read: 1

In this case, feof() is called before any data has been read, so it returns false. The loop is entered, fgetc() is called (and returns EOF), and count is incremented. Then feof() is called and returns true, causing the loop to abort.

This happens in all such cases. feof() does not return true until after a read on the stream encounters the end of file. The purpose of feof() is NOT to check if the next read will reach the end of file. The purpose of feof() is to determine the status of a previous read function and distinguish between an error condition and the end of the data stream. If fread() returns 0, you must use feof/ferror to decide whether an error occurred or if all of the data was consumed. Similarly if fgetc returns EOF. feof() is only useful after fread has returned zero or fgetc has returned EOF. Before that happens, feof() will always return 0.

It is always necessary to check the return value of a read (either an fread(), or an fscanf(), or an fgetc()) before calling feof().

Even worse, consider the case where a read error occurs. In that case, fgetc() returns EOF, feof() returns false, and the loop never terminates. In all cases where while(!feof(p)) is used, there must be at least a check inside the loop for ferror(), or at the very least the while condition should be replaced with while(!feof(p) && !ferror(p)) or there is a very real possibility of an infinite loop, probably spewing all sorts of garbage as invalid data is being processed.

So, in summary, although I cannot state with certainty that there is never a situation in which it may be semantically correct to write "while(!feof(f))" (although there must be another check inside the loop with a break to avoid a infinite loop on a read error), it is the case that it is almost certainly always wrong. And even if a case ever arose where it would be correct, it is so idiomatically wrong that it would not be the right way to write the code. Anyone seeing that code should immediately hesitate and say, "that's a bug". And possibly slap the author (unless the author is your boss in which case discretion is advised.)

SQL update fields of one table from fields of another one

This is a great help. The code

works perfectly.

noted that you need a bracket "" in

System.Security.SecurityException when writing to Event Log

Had a similar issue with all of our 2008 servers. The security log stopped working altogether because of a GPO that took the group Authenticated Users and read permission away from the key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\security

Putting this back per Microsoft's recommendation corrected the issue. I suspect giving all authenticated users read at a higher level will also correct your problem.

Bad File Descriptor with Linux Socket write() Bad File Descriptor C

The value you have passed as the file descriptor is not valid. It is either negative or does not represent a currently open file or socket.

So you have either closed the socket before calling write() or you have corrupted the value of 'sockfd' somewhere in your code.

It would be useful to trace all calls to close(), and the value of 'sockfd' prior to the write() calls.

Your technique of only printing error messages in debug mode seems to me complete madness, and in any case calling another function between a system call and perror() is invalid, as it may disturb the value of errno. Indeed it may have done so in this case, and the real underlying error may be different.

How to start an application using android ADB tools?

Also, I want to mention one more thing.

When you start an application from adb shell am, it automatically adds FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK flag which makes behavior change. See the code.

For example, if you launch Play Store activity from adb shell am, pressing 'Back' button(hardware back button) wouldn't take you your app, instead it would take you previous Play Store activity if there was some(If there was not Play store task, then it would take you your app). FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK documentation says :

if a task is already running for the activity you are now starting, then a new activity will not be started; instead, the current task will simply be brought to the front of the screen with the state it was last in

This caused me to spend a few hours to find out what went wrong.

So, keep in mind that adb shell am add FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK flag.

else replace(replace(replace(right(cast(getdate() as varchar),7),'AM',''),'PM',''),' ','') end as [Time]

How to implement "select all" check box in HTML?

Simple and to the POINT:

jQuery - Upon Clicking a button or div or a label element. Check off all checkboxes on the page. Keep in mind you'll have to adjust :checkbox to make it more specific.

jQuery("#My-Button").click(function() {

  jQuery(':checkbox').each(function() {
    if(this.checked == true) {
      this.checked = false;
    } else {
      this.checked = true;
    }
  });

});

How to sort a list of strings?

Please use sorted() function in Python3

items = ["love", "like", "play", "cool", "my"]
sorted(items2)

Can not deserialize instance of java.util.ArrayList out of START_OBJECT token

The problem is the JSON - this cannot, by default, be deserialized into a Collection because it's not actually a JSON Array - that would look like this:

[
    {
        "name": "Test order1",
        "detail": "ahk ks"
    },
    {
        "name": "Test order2",
        "detail": "Fisteku"
    }
]

Since you're not controlling the exact process of deserialization (RestEasy does) - a first option would be to simply inject the JSON as a String and then take control of the deserialization process:

Collection<COrder> readValues = new ObjectMapper().readValue(
    jsonAsString, new TypeReference<Collection<COrder>>() { }
);

You would loose a bit of the convenience of not having to do that yourself, but you would easily sort out the problem.

Another option - if you cannot change the JSON - would be to construct a wrapper to fit the structure of your JSON input - and use that instead of Collection<COrder>.

Hope this helps.

How to show current user name in a cell?

The simplest way is to create a VBA macro that wraps that function, like so:

How do I call paint event?

I found the Invalidate() creating too much of flickering. Here's my situation. A custom control I am developing draws its whole contents via handling the Paint event.

this.Paint += this.OnPaint;

This handler calls a custom routine that does the actual painting.

private void OnPaint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e)
{
    this.DrawFrame(e.Graphics);
}

To simulate scrolling I want to repaint my control every time the cursor moves while the left mouse button is pressed. My first choice was using the Invalidate() like the following.

private void RedrawFrame()
{
    var r = new Rectangle(
        0, 0, this.Width, this.Height);

    this.Invalidate(r);
    this.Update();
}

The control scrolls OK but flickers far beyond any comfortable level. So I decided, instead of repainting the control, to call my custom DrawFrame() method directly after handling the MouseMove event. That produced a smooth scrolling with no flickering.

private void RedrawFrame()
{
    var g = Graphics.FromHwnd(this.Handle);
    this.DrawFrame(g);
}

This approach may not be applicable to all situations, but so far it suits me well.

Check if a String contains numbers Java

ASCII is at the start of UNICODE, so you can do something like this:

I'm sure you can figure out the other values...

What is the equivalent of bigint in C#?

I just had a script that returned the primary key of an insert and used a

SELECT @@identity

on my bigint primary key, and I get a cast error using long - that was why I started this search. The correct answer, at least in my case, is that the type returned by that select is NUMERIC which equates to a decimal type. Using a long will cause a cast exception.

This is one reason to check your answers in more than one Google search (or even on Stack Overflow!).

To quote a database administrator who helped me out:

... BigInt is not the same as INT64 no matter how much they look alike. Part of the reason is that SQL will frequently convert Int/BigInt to Numeric as part of the normal processing. So when it goes to OLE or .NET the required conversion is NUMERIC to INT.

We don't often notice since the printed value looks the same.

Java: How to resolve java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/xml/bind/JAXBException

The JAXB APIs are considered to be Java EE APIs and therefore are no longer contained on the default classpath in Java SE 9. In Java 11, they are completely removed from the JDK.

Java 9 introduces the concepts of modules, and by default, the java.se aggregate module is available on the classpath (or rather, module-path). As the name implies, the java.se aggregate module does not include the Java EE APIs that have been traditionally bundled with Java 6/7/8.

Fortunately, these Java EE APIs that were provided in JDK 6/7/8 are still in the JDK, but they just aren't on the classpath by default. The extra Java EE APIs are provided in the following modules:

java.activation
java.corba
java.transaction
java.xml.bind << This one contains the JAXB APIs
java.xml.ws
java.xml.ws.annotation

Quick and dirty solution: (JDK 9/10 only)

To make the JAXB APIs available at runtime, specify the following command-line option:

--add-modules java.xml.bind

But I still need this to work with Java 8!!!

If you try specifying --add-modules with an older JDK, it will blow up because it's an unrecognized option. I suggest one of two options:

  1. You can set any Java 9+ only options using the JDK_JAVA_OPTIONS environment variable. This environment variable is automatically read by the java launcher for Java 9+.
  2. You can add the -XX:+IgnoreUnrecognizedVMOptions to make the JVM silently ignore unrecognized options, instead of blowing up. But beware! Any other command-line arguments you use will no longer be validated for you by the JVM. This option works with Oracle/OpenJDK as well as IBM JDK (as of JDK 8sr4).

Alternate quick solution: (JDK 9/10 only)

Note that you can make all of the above Java EE modules available at run time by specifying the --add-modules java.se.ee option. The java.se.ee module is an aggregate module that includes java.se.ee as well as the above Java EE API modules. Note, this doesn't work on Java 11 because java.se.ee was removed in Java 11.

Proper long-term solution: (JDK 9 and beyond)

The Java EE API modules listed above are all marked @Deprecated(forRemoval=true) because they are scheduled for removal in Java 11. So the --add-module approach will no longer work in Java 11 out-of-the-box.

What you will need to do in Java 11 and forward is include your own copy of the Java EE APIs on the classpath or module path. For example, you can add the JAX-B APIs as a Maven dependency like this:

<!-- API, java.xml.bind module -->
<dependency>
    <groupId>jakarta.xml.bind</groupId>
    <artifactId>jakarta.xml.bind-api</artifactId>
    <version>2.3.2</version>
</dependency>

<!-- Runtime, com.sun.xml.bind module -->
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.glassfish.jaxb</groupId>
    <artifactId>jaxb-runtime</artifactId>
    <version>2.3.2</version>
</dependency>

See the JAXB Reference Implementation page for more details on JAXB.

For full details on Java modularity, see JEP 261: Module System

For Gradle or Android Studio developer: (JDK 9 and beyond)

Add the following dependencies to your build.gradle file:

dependencies {
    // JAX-B dependencies for JDK 9+
    implementation "jakarta.xml.bind:jakarta.xml.bind-api:2.3.2"
    implementation "org.glassfish.jaxb:jaxb-runtime:2.3.2"
}

CSS transition shorthand with multiple properties?

Syntax:

transition: <property> || <duration> || <timing-function> || <delay> [, ...];

Note that the duration must come before the delay, if the latter is specified.

Individual transitions combined in shorthand declarations:

-webkit-transition: height 0.3s ease-out, opacity 0.3s ease 0.5s;
-moz-transition: height 0.3s ease-out, opacity 0.3s ease 0.5s;
-o-transition: height 0.3s ease-out, opacity 0.3s ease 0.5s;
transition: height 0.3s ease-out, opacity 0.3s ease 0.5s;

Or just transition them all:

-webkit-transition: all 0.3s ease-out;
-moz-transition: all 0.3s ease-out;
-o-transition: all 0.3s ease-out;
transition: all 0.3s ease-out;

Here is a straightforward example. Here is another one with the delay property.

Edit: previously listed here were the compatibilities and known issues regarding transition. Removed for readability.

Bottom-line: just use it. The nature of this property is non-breaking for all applications and compatibility is now well above 94% globally.

If you still want to be sure, refer to http://caniuse.com/css-transitions

How to create a md5 hash of a string in C?

It would appear that you should

  • Create a struct MD5context and pass it to MD5Init to get it into a proper starting condition
  • Call MD5Update with the context and your data
  • Call MD5Final to get the resulting hash

These three functions and the structure definition make a nice abstract interface to the hash algorithm. I'm not sure why you were shown the core transform function in that header as you probably shouldn't interact with it directly.

The author could have done a little more implementation hiding by making the structure an abstract type, but then you would have been forced to allocate the structure on the heap every time (as opposed to now where you can put it on the stack if you so desire).

Case insensitive string compare in LINQ-to-SQL

Remember that there is a difference between whether the query works and whether it works efficiently! A LINQ statement gets converted to T-SQL when the target of the statement is SQL Server, so you need to think about the T-SQL that would be produced.

Using String.Equals will most likely (I am guessing) bring back all of the rows from SQL Server and then do the comparison in .NET, because it is a .NET expression that cannot be translated into T-SQL.

In other words using an expression will increase your data access and remove your ability to make use of indexes. It will work on small tables and you won't notice the difference. On a large table it could perform very badly.

That's one of the problems that exists with LINQ; people no longer think about how the statements they write will be fulfilled.

In this case there isn't a way to do what you want without using an expression - not even in T-SQL. Therefore you may not be able to do this more efficiently. Even the T-SQL answer given above (using variables with collation) will most likely result in indexes being ignored, but if it is a big table then it is worth running the statement and looking at the execution plan to see if an index was used.

Can anyone explain me StandardScaler?

Following is a simple working example to explain how standarization calculation works. The theory part is already well explained in other answers.

>>>import numpy as np
>>>data = [[6, 2], [4, 2], [6, 4], [8, 2]]
>>>a = np.array(data)

>>>np.std(a, axis=0)
array([1.41421356, 0.8660254 ])

>>>np.mean(a, axis=0)
array([6. , 2.5])

>>>from sklearn.preprocessing import StandardScaler
>>>scaler = StandardScaler()
>>>scaler.fit(data)
>>>print(scaler.mean_)

#Xchanged = (X-µ)/s  WHERE s is Standard Deviation and µ is mean
>>>z=scaler.transform(data)
>>>z

Calculation

As you can see in the output, mean is [6. , 2.5] and std deviation is [1.41421356, 0.8660254 ]

Data is (0,1) position is 2 Standardization = (2 - 2.5)/0.8660254 = -0.57735027

Data in (1,0) position is 4 Standardization = (4-6)/1.41421356 = -1.414

Notice: Undefined variable: _SESSION in "" on line 9

First, you'll need to add session_start() at the top of any page that you wish to use SESSION variables on.

Also, you should check to make sure the variable is set first before using it:

    echo $_SESSION['SESS_fname'];
}

Or, simply:

echo (isset($_SESSION['SESS_fname']) ? $_SESSION['SESS_fname'] : "Visitor");

How to stop tracking and ignore changes to a file in Git?

Lots of people advise you to use git update-index --assume-unchanged. Indeed, this may be a good solution, but only in the short run.

What you probably want to do is this: git update-index --skip-worktree.

(The third option, which you probably don't want is: git rm --cached. It will keep your local file, but will be marked as removed from the remote repository.)

Difference between the first two options?

  • assume-unchanged is to temporary allow you to hide modifications from a file. If you want to hide modifications done to a file, modify the file, then checkout another branch, you'll have to use no-assume-unchanged then probably stash modifications done.
  • skip-worktree will follow you whatever the branch you checkout, with your modifications!

Use case of assume-unchanged

It assumes this file should not be modified, and gives you a cleaner output when doing git status. But when checking out to another branch, you need to reset the flag and commit or stash changes before so. If you pull with this option activated, you'll need to solve conflicts and git won't auto merge. It actually only hides modifications (git status won't show you the flagged files).

I like to use it when I only want to stop tracking changes for a while + commit a bunch of files (git commit -a) related to the same modification.

Use case of skip-worktree

You have a setup class containing parameters (eg. including passwords) that your friends have to change accordingly to their setup.

  • 1: Create a first version of this class, fill in fields you can fill and leave others empty/null.
  • 2: Commit and push it to the remote server.
  • 3: git update-index --skip-worktree MySetupClass.java
  • 4: Update your configuration class with your own parameters.
  • 5: Go back to work on another functionnality.

The modifications you do will follow you whatever the branch. Warning: if your friends also want to modify this class, they have to have the same setup, otherwise their modifications would be pushed to the remote repository. When pulling, the remote version of the file should overwrite yours.

PS: do one or the other, but not both as you'll have undesirable side-effects. If you want to try another flag, you should disable the latter first.

How to revert to origin's master branch's version of file

If you didn't commit it to the master branch yet, its easy:

  • get off the master branch (like git checkout -b oops/fluke/dang)
  • commit your changes there (like git add -u; git commit;)
  • go back the master branch (like git checkout master)

Your changes will be saved in branch oops/fluke/dang; master will be as it was.

Merge PDF files with PHP

I've done this before. I had a pdf that I generated with fpdf, and I needed to add on a variable amount of PDFs to it.

So I already had an fpdf object and page set up (http://www.fpdf.org/) And I used fpdi to import the files (http://www.setasign.de/products/pdf-php-solutions/fpdi/) FDPI is added by extending the PDF class:

class PDF extends FPDI
{

}

    $pdffile = "Filename.pdf";
    $pagecount = $pdf->setSourceFile($pdffile);
    for($i=0; $i<$pagecount; $i++){
        $pdf->AddPage();
        $tplidx = $pdf->importPage($i+1, '/MediaBox');
        $pdf->useTemplate($tplidx, 10, 10, 200);
    }

This basically makes each pdf into an image to put into your other pdf. It worked amazingly well for what I needed it for.

make iframe height dynamic based on content inside- JQUERY/Javascript

I found that the accepted answer didn't suffice, since X-FRAME-OPTIONS: Allow-From isn't supported in safari or chrome. Went with a different approach instead, found in a presentation given by Ben Vinegar from Disqus. The idea is to add an event listener to the parent window, and then inside the iframe, use window.postMessage to send an event to the parent telling it to do something (resize the iframe).

So in the parent document, add an event listener:

window.addEventListener('message', function(e) {
  var $iframe = jQuery("#myIframe");
  var eventName = e.data[0];
  var data = e.data[1];
  switch(eventName) {
    case 'setHeight':
      $iframe.height(data);
      break;
  }
}, false);

And inside the iframe, write a function to post the message:

function resize() {
  var height = document.getElementsByTagName("html")[0].scrollHeight;
  window.parent.postMessage(["setHeight", height], "*");
}

Finally, inside the iframe, add an onLoad to the body tag to fire the resize function:

<body onLoad="resize();">

Javascript: output current datetime in YYYY/mm/dd hh:m:sec format

You can build it manually:

var m = new Date();
var dateString = m.getUTCFullYear() +"/"+ (m.getUTCMonth()+1) +"/"+ m.getUTCDate() + " " + m.getUTCHours() + ":" + m.getUTCMinutes() + ":" + m.getUTCSeconds();

and to force two digits on the values that require it, you can use something like this:

("0000" + 5).slice(-2)

Which would look like this:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var m = new Date();_x000D_
var dateString =_x000D_
    m.getUTCFullYear() + "/" +_x000D_
    ("0" + (m.getUTCMonth()+1)).slice(-2) + "/" +_x000D_
    ("0" + m.getUTCDate()).slice(-2) + " " +_x000D_
    ("0" + m.getUTCHours()).slice(-2) + ":" +_x000D_
    ("0" + m.getUTCMinutes()).slice(-2) + ":" +_x000D_
    ("0" + m.getUTCSeconds()).slice(-2);_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(dateString);
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

Plot size and resolution with R markdown, knitr, pandoc, beamer

I think that is a frequently asked question about the behavior of figures in beamer slides produced from Pandoc and markdown. The real problem is, R Markdown produces PNG images by default (from knitr), and it is hard to get the size of PNG images correct in LaTeX by default (I do not know why). It is fairly easy, however, to get the size of PDF images correct. One solution is to reset the default graphical device to PDF in your first chunk:

```{r setup, include=FALSE}
knitr::opts_chunk$set(dev = 'pdf')
```

Then all the images will be written as PDF files, and LaTeX will be happy.

Your second problem is you are mixing up the HTML units with LaTeX units in out.width / out.height. LaTeX and HTML are very different technologies. You should not expect \maxwidth to work in HTML, or 200px in LaTeX. Especially when you want to convert Markdown to LaTeX, you'd better not set out.width / out.height (use fig.width / fig.height and let LaTeX use the original size).

HTML img tag: title attribute vs. alt attribute?

I believe alt is required for strict XHTML compliance.

As others have noted, title is for tooltips (nice to have), alt is for accessibility. Nothing wrong with using both, but alt should always be there.

Delete duplicate elements from an array

Try following from Removing duplicates from an Array(simple):

Array.prototype.removeDuplicates = function (){
  var temp=new Array();
  this.sort();
  for(i=0;i<this.length;i++){
    if(this[i]==this[i+1]) {continue}
    temp[temp.length]=this[i];
  }
  return temp;
}

Edit:

This code doesn't need sort:

Array.prototype.removeDuplicates = function (){
  var temp=new Array();
  label:for(i=0;i<this.length;i++){
        for(var j=0; j<temp.length;j++ ){//check duplicates
            if(temp[j]==this[i])//skip if already present
               continue label;
        }
        temp[temp.length] = this[i];
  }
  return temp;
 }

(But not a tested code!)

How to change the opacity (alpha, transparency) of an element in a canvas element after it has been drawn?

Some simpler example code for using globalAlpha:

ctx.save();
ctx.globalAlpha = 0.4;
ctx.drawImage(img, x, y);
ctx.restore();

If you need img to be loaded:

var img = new Image();
img.onload = function() {
    ctx.save();
    ctx.globalAlpha = 0.4;
    ctx.drawImage(img, x, y);
    ctx.restore()
};
img.src = "http://...";

Notes:

  • Set the 'src' last, to guarantee that your onload handler is called on all platforms, even if the image is already in the cache.

  • Wrap changes to stuff like globalAlpha between a save and restore (in fact use them lots), to make sure you don't clobber settings from elsewhere, particularly when bits of drawing code are going to be called from events.

Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=2.0.0.0

Short:
In you have this problem with a pure Web API project (and thus don't need razor), try to add it anyway, rebuild, then remove it.

Long story:
I had this problem with a brand-new pure Web API project, except that the stacktrace pointed "System.Web.Mvc" as Calling assembly (see Darin's answer). No reference to MVC, Razor or anything like that in my project though...
I decided to add the MVC packages (AspNet.Mvc, AspNet.WebPages and AspNet.Razor) to check if there was any subsequent problem.
The WebApi app then launched perfectly fine. Then I removed the exact same packages and everything was still OK.

Hope it helps someone.

Set disable attribute based on a condition for Html.TextBoxFor

I like the extension method approach so you don't have to pass through all possible parameters.
However using Regular expressions can be quite tricky (and somewhat slower) so I used XDocument instead:

public static MvcHtmlString SetDisabled(this MvcHtmlString html, bool isDisabled)
{
    var xDocument = XDocument.Parse(html.ToHtmlString());
    if (!(xDocument.FirstNode is XElement element))
    {
        return html;
    }

    element.SetAttributeValue("disabled", isDisabled ? "disabled" : null);
    return MvcHtmlString.Create(element.ToString());
}

Use the extension method like this:
@Html.EditorFor(m => m.MyProperty).SetDisabled(Model.ExpireDate == null)

Media Queries: How to target desktop, tablet, and mobile?

Don't target specific devices or sizes!

The general wisdom is not to target specific devices or sizes, but to reframe the term 'breakpoint':

  • develop the site for mobile first using percentages or ems, not pixels,
  • then try it in a larger viewport and note where it begins to fail,
  • redesign the layout and add a CSS media query just to handle the broken parts,
  • repeat the process until you reach the next breakpoint.

You can use responsivepx.com to find the 'natural' breakpoints, as in 'breakpoints are dead' by Marc Drummond.

Use natural breakpoints

The 'breakpoints' then become the actual point at which your mobile design begins to 'break' i.e. cease to be usable or visually pleasing. Once you have a good working mobile site, without media queries, you can stop being concerned about specific sizes and simply add media queries that handle successively larger viewports.

If you're not trying to pin design to exact screen size, this approach works by removing the need to target specific devices. The integrity of the design itself at each breakpoint ensures that it will hold up at any size. In other words, if a menu/content section/whatever stops being usable at a certain size, design a breakpoint for that size, not for a specific device size.

See Lyza Gardner's post on behavioral breakpoints, and also Zeldman's post about Ethan Marcotte and how responsive web design evolved from the initial idea.

Use semantic markup

Further, the simpler and more semantic the DOM structure with nav, header, main, section, footer etc. (avoiding abominations like div class="header" with nested inner div tags) the easier it will be to engineer responsiveness, especially avoiding floats by using CSS Grid Layout (Sarah Drasner's grid generator is a great tool for this) and flexbox for arranging and re-ordering according to your RWD design plan.

svn list of files that are modified in local copy

Using Powershell you can do this:

# Regex: Excludes unmodified (first 7 columns blank). To exclude more add criteria to negative look ahead.
# -u: svn gets updates
$regex = '^(?!\s{7}).{7}\s+(.+)';

This will include property changes. These show in column 2. It will also catch other differences in files that show in columns 3-7.

How to compare LocalDate instances Java 8

Using equals() LocalDate does override equals:

int compareTo0(LocalDate otherDate) {
    int cmp = (year - otherDate.year);
    if (cmp == 0) {
        cmp = (month - otherDate.month);
        if (cmp == 0) {
            cmp = (day - otherDate.day);
        }
    }
    return cmp;
}

If you are not happy with the result of equals(), you are good using the predefined methods of LocalDate.

Notice that all of those method are using the compareTo0() method and just check the cmp value. if you are still getting weird result (which you shouldn't), please attach an example of input and output

best OCR (Optical character recognition) example in android

Like you I also faced many problems implementing OCR in Android, but after much Googling I found the solution, and it surely is the best example of OCR.

Let me explain using step-by-step guidance.

First, download the source code from https://github.com/rmtheis/tess-two.

Import all three projects. After importing you will get an error. To solve the error you have to create a res folder in the tess-two project

enter image description here

First, just create res folder in tess-two by tess-two->RightClick->new Folder->Name it "res"

After doing this in all three project the error should be gone.

Now download the source code from https://github.com/rmtheis/android-ocr, here you will get best example.

Now you just need to import it into your workspace, but first you have to download android-ndk from this site:

http://developer.android.com/tools/sdk/ndk/index.html i have windows 7 - 32 bit PC so I have download http://dl.google.com/android/ndk/android-ndk-r9-windows-x86.zip this file

Now extract it suppose I have extract it into E:\Software\android-ndk-r9 so I will set this path on Environment Variable

Right Click on MyComputer->Property->Advance-System-Settings->Advance->Environment Variable-> find PATH on second below Box and set like path like below picture

enter image description here

done it

Now open cmd and go to on D:\Android Workspace\tess-two like below

enter image description here

If you have successfully set up environment variable of NDK then just type ndk-build just like above picture than enter you will not get any kind of error and all file will be compiled successfully:

Now download other source code also from https://github.com/rmtheis/tess-two , and extract and import it and give it name OCRTest, like in my PC which is in D:\Android Workspace\OCRTest

enter image description here

Import test-two in this and run OCRTest and run it; you will get the best example of OCR.

Sorting an ArrayList of objects using a custom sorting order

This page tells you all you need to know about sorting collections, such as ArrayList.

Basically you need to

  • make your Contact class implement the Comparable interface by
    • creating a method public int compareTo(Contact anotherContact) within it.
  • Once you do this, you can just call Collections.sort(myContactList);,
    • where myContactList is ArrayList<Contact> (or any other collection of Contact).

There's another way as well, involving creating a Comparator class, and you can read about that from the linked page as well.

Example:

public class Contact implements Comparable<Contact> {

    ....

    //return -1 for less than, 0 for equals, and 1 for more than
    public compareTo(Contact anotherContact) {
        int result = 0;
        result = getName().compareTo(anotherContact.getName());
        if (result != 0)
        {
            return result;
        }
        result = getNunmber().compareTo(anotherContact.getNumber());
        if (result != 0)
        {
            return result;
        }
        ...
    }
}

What is the difference between print and puts?

A big difference is if you are displaying arrays. Especially ones with NIL. For example:

print [nil, 1, 2]

gives

[nil, 1, 2]

but

puts [nil, 1, 2]

gives

1
2

Note, no appearing nil item (just a blank line) and each item on a different line.

Get the system date and split day, month and year

DateTime datevalue = (Convert.ToDateTime(sDate.ToString()));

String mn = datevalue.Month.ToString();
String yy = datevalue.Year.ToString();

OR

Alternatively, you can use split function to split string date into day, month and year here.

Hope, it will helps you... Cheers. !!
