PostgreSQL - fetch the row which has the Max value for a column

You can do it with window functions

SELECT t.*
FROM
    (SELECT
        *,
        ROW_NUMBER() OVER(PARTITION BY usr_id ORDER BY time_stamp DESC) as r
    FROM lives) as t
WHERE t.r = 1

C# "No suitable method found to override." -- but there is one

I ran into a similar situation with code that WAS working , then was not.

Turned while dragging / dropping code within a file, I moved an object into another set of braces. Took longer to figure out than I care to admit.

Bit once I move the code back into its proper place, the error resolved.

Python pandas: how to specify data types when reading an Excel file?

If you don't know the column names and you want to specify str data type to all columns:

table = pd.read_excel("path_to_filename")
cols = table.columns
conv = dict(zip(cols ,[str] * len(cols)))
table = pd.read_excel("path_to_filename", converters=conv)

How is a CSS "display: table-column" supposed to work?

The CSS table model is based on the HTML table model http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/tables.html

A table is divided into ROWS, and each row contains one or more cells. Cells are children of ROWS, they are NEVER children of columns.

"display: table-column" does NOT provide a mechanism for making columnar layouts (e.g. newspaper pages with multiple columns, where content can flow from one column to the next).

Rather, "table-column" ONLY sets attributes that apply to corresponding cells within the rows of a table. E.g. "The background color of the first cell in each row is green" can be described.

The table itself is always structured the same way it is in HTML.

In HTML (observe that "td"s are inside "tr"s, NOT inside "col"s):

<table ..>
  <col .. />
  <col .. />
  <tr ..>
    <td ..></td>
    <td ..></td>
  </tr>
  <tr ..>
    <td ..></td>
    <td ..></td>
  </tr>
</table>

Corresponding HTML using CSS table properties (Note that the "column" divs do not contain any contents -- the standard does not allow for contents directly in columns):

_x000D_
_x000D_
.mytable {_x000D_
  display: table;_x000D_
}_x000D_
.myrow {_x000D_
  display: table-row;_x000D_
}_x000D_
.mycell {_x000D_
  display: table-cell;_x000D_
}_x000D_
.column1 {_x000D_
  display: table-column;_x000D_
  background-color: green;_x000D_
}_x000D_
.column2 {_x000D_
  display: table-column;_x000D_
}
_x000D_
<div class="mytable">_x000D_
  <div class="column1"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="column2"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="myrow">_x000D_
    <div class="mycell">contents of first cell in row 1</div>_x000D_
    <div class="mycell">contents of second cell in row 1</div>_x000D_
  </div>_x000D_
  <div class="myrow">_x000D_
    <div class="mycell">contents of first cell in row 2</div>_x000D_
    <div class="mycell">contents of second cell in row 2</div>_x000D_
  </div>_x000D_
</div>

OPTIONAL: both "rows" and "columns" can be styled by assigning multiple classes to each row and cell as follows. This approach gives maximum flexibility in specifying various sets of cells, or individual cells, to be styled:

In today's flexible designs, which use <div> for multiple purposes, it is wise to put some class on each div, to help refer to it. Here, what used to be <tr> in HTML became class myrow, and <td> became class mycell. This convention is what makes the above CSS selectors useful.

PERFORMANCE NOTE: putting class names on each cell, and using the above multi-class selectors, is better performance than using selectors ending with *, such as .row1 * or even .row1 > *. The reason is that selectors are matched last first, so when matching elements are being sought, .row1 * first does *, which matches all elements, and then checks all the ancestors of each element, to find if any ancestor has class row1. This might be slow in a complex document on a slow device. .row1 > * is better, because only the immediate parent is examined. But it is much better still to immediately eliminate most elements, via .row1 .cell1. (.row1 > .cell1 is an even tighter spec, but it is the first step of the search that makes the biggest difference, so it usually isn't worth the clutter, and the extra thought process as to whether it will always be a direct child, of adding the child selector >.)

The key point to take away re performance is that the last item in a selector should be as specific as possible, and should never be *.

sql insert into table with select case values

If FName and LName contain NULL values, then you will need special handling to avoid unnecessary extra preceeding, trailing, and middle spaces. Also, if Address1 contains NULL values, then you need to have special handling to prevent adding unnecessary ', ' at the beginning of your address string.

If you are using SQL Server 2012, then you can use CONCAT (NULLs are automatically treated as empty strings) and IIF:

INSERT INTO TblStuff (FullName, Address, City, Zip)
SELECT FullName = REPLACE(RTRIM(LTRIM(CONCAT(FName, ' ', Middle, ' ', LName))), '  ', ' ')
    , Address = CONCAT(Address1, IIF(Address2 IS NOT NULL, CONCAT(', ', Address2), ''))
    , City
    , Zip
FROM tblImport (NOLOCK);

Otherwise, this will work:

INSERT INTO TblStuff (FullName, Address, City, Zip)
SELECT FullName = REPLACE(RTRIM(LTRIM(ISNULL(FName, '') + ' ' + ISNULL(Middle, '') + ' ' + ISNULL(LName, ''))), '  ', ' ')
    , Address = ISNULL(Address1, '') + CASE
        WHEN Address2 IS NOT NULL THEN ', ' + Address2
        ELSE '' END
    , City
    , Zip
FROM tblImport (NOLOCK);

I think required="required" has been deprecated in version 3 of bootstrap.

WSDL vs REST Pros and Cons

I know that this discussion is an old one, but after reading all the answers and commented, I believe that everyone missed the most important point about the difference between the 2 systems: SOAP uses complex types to not only give you the data, but validate it and keep it in the strict type designation it was defined for. A WSDL tells you what the data format is, what the data type is, allows you to add reg-ex pattern-style rules, and defines how many times a piece of data must be, and may be, allowed in a request/response. Rest on the other-hand has none of these mechanisms.

SOAP is complex and heavy because it allows you to send complex heavy hierarchical data. REST is plain text, with the origin and endpoint sorting out the rules.

SOAP is business independent, because it has all the data rules embedded in the document.

The difference between SOAP and REST is that SOAP is a self-contained business oriented schema. REST is a text document.

slf4j: how to log formatted message, object array, exception

As of SLF4J 1.6.0, in the presence of multiple parameters and if the last argument in a logging statement is an exception, then SLF4J will presume that the user wants the last argument to be treated as an exception and not a simple parameter. See also the relevant FAQ entry.

So, writing (in SLF4J version 1.7.x and later)

 logger.error("one two three: {} {} {}", "a", "b",
              "c", new Exception("something went wrong"));

or writing (in SLF4J version 1.6.x)

 logger.error("one two three: {} {} {}", new Object[] {"a", "b",
              "c", new Exception("something went wrong")});

will yield

one two three: a b c
java.lang.Exception: something went wrong
    at Example.main(Example.java:13)
    at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:597)
    at ...

The exact output will depend on the underlying framework (e.g. logback, log4j, etc) as well on how the underlying framework is configured. However, if the last parameter is an exception it will be interpreted as such regardless of the underlying framework.

How to update record using Entity Framework 6?

You should use the Entry() method in case you want to update all the fields in your object. Also keep in mind you cannot change the field id (key) therefore first set the Id to the same as you edit.

using(var context = new ...())
{
    var EditedObj = context
        .Obj
        .Where(x => x. ....)
        .First();

    NewObj.Id = EditedObj.Id; //This is important when we first create an object (NewObj), in which the default Id = 0. We can not change an existing key.

    context.Entry(EditedObj).CurrentValues.SetValues(NewObj);

    context.SaveChanges();
}

How to group an array of objects by key

With lodash/fp you can create a function with _.flow() that 1st groups by a key, and then map each group, and omits a key from each item:

jQuery Scroll to bottom of page/iframe

After this thread didn't work out for me for my specific need (scrolling inside a particular element, in my case a textarea) I found this out in the great beyond, which could prove helpful to someone else reading this discussion:

Alternative on planetcloud

Since I already had a cached version of my jQuery object (the myPanel in the code below is the jQuery object), the code I added to my event handler was simply this:

myPanel.scrollTop(myPanel[0].scrollHeight - myPanel.height());

How can Print Preview be called from Javascript?

It can be done using javascript. Say your html/aspx code goes this way:

<span>Main heading</span>
<asp:Label ID="lbl1" runat="server" Text="Contents"></asp:Label>
<asp:Label Text="Contractor Name" ID="lblCont" runat="server"></asp:Label>
<div id="forPrintPreview">
  <asp:Label Text="Company Name" runat="server"></asp:Label>
  <asp:GridView runat="server">

      //GridView Content goes here

  </asp:GridView
</div>

<input type="button" onclick="PrintPreview();" value="Print Preview" />

Here on click of "Print Preview" button we will open a window with data for print. Observe that 'forPrintPreview' is the id of a div. The function for Print preview goes this way:

function PrintPreview() {
 var Contractor= $('span[id*="lblCont"]').html();
 printWindow = window.open("", "", "location=1,status=1,scrollbars=1,width=650,height=600");
 printWindow.document.write('<html><head>');
 printWindow.document.write('<style type="text/css">@media print{.no-print, .no-print *{display: none !important;}</style>');
 printWindow.document.write('</head><body>');
 printWindow.document.write('<div style="width:100%;text-align:right">');

  //Print and cancel button
 printWindow.document.write('<input type="button" id="btnPrint" value="Print" class="no-print" style="width:100px" onclick="window.print()" />');
 printWindow.document.write('<input type="button" id="btnCancel" value="Cancel" class="no-print"  style="width:100px" onclick="window.close()" />');

 printWindow.document.write('</div>');

 //You can include any data this way.
 printWindow.document.write('<table><tr><td>Contractor name:'+ Contractor +'</td></tr>you can include any info here</table');

 printWindow.document.write(document.getElementById('forPrintPreview').innerHTML);
 //here 'forPrintPreview' is the id of the 'div' in current page(aspx).
 printWindow.document.write('</body></html>');
 printWindow.document.close();
 printWindow.focus();
}

Observe that buttons 'print' and 'cancel' has the css class 'no-print', So these buttons will not appear in the print.

ComboBox SelectedItem vs SelectedValue

If we want to bind to a dictionary ie

                              Margin="{StaticResource SmallMarginLeftBottom}"/>

Is it ok to use `any?` to check if an array is not empty?

I don't think it's bad to use any? at all. I use it a lot. It's clear and concise.

However if you are concerned about all nil values throwing it off, then you are really asking if the array has size > 0. In that case, this dead simple extension (NOT optimized, monkey-style) would get you close.

Object.class_eval do

  def size?
    respond_to?(:size) && size > 0
  end

end

> "foo".size?
 => true
> "".size?
 => false
> " ".size?
 => true
> [].size?
 => false
> [11,22].size?
 => true
> [nil].size?
 => true

This is fairly descriptive, logically asking "does this object have a size?". And it's concise, and it doesn't require ActiveSupport. And it's easy to build on.

Some extras to think about:

  1. This is not the same as present? from ActiveSupport.
  2. You might want a custom version for String, that ignores whitespace (like present? does).
  3. You might want the name length? for String or other types where it might be more descriptive.
  4. You might want it custom for Integer and other Numeric types, so that a logical zero returns false.

How to add a recyclerView inside another recyclerView

I ran into similar problem a while back and what was happening in my case was the outer recycler view was working perfectly fine but the the adapter of inner/second recycler view had minor issues all the methods like constructor got initiated and even getCount() method was being called, although the final methods responsible to generate view ie..

1. onBindViewHolder() methods never got called. --> Problem 1.

2. When it got called finally it never show the list items/rows of recycler view. --> Problem 2.

Reason why this happened :: When you put a recycler view inside another recycler view, then height of the first/outer recycler view is not auto adjusted. It is defined when the first/outer view is created and then it remains fixed. At that point your second/inner recycler view has not yet loaded its items and thus its height is set as zero and never changes even when it gets data. Then when onBindViewHolder() in your second/inner recycler view is called, it gets items but it doesn't have the space to show them because its height is still zero. So the items in the second recycler view are never shown even when the onBindViewHolder() has added them to it.

Solution :: you have to create your custom LinearLayoutManager for the second recycler view and that is it. To create your own LinearLayoutManager: Create a Java class with the name CustomLinearLayoutManager and paste the code below into it. NO CHANGES REQUIRED

public class CustomLinearLayoutManager extends LinearLayoutManager {

    private static final String TAG = CustomLinearLayoutManager.class.getSimpleName();

    public CustomLinearLayoutManager(Context context) {
        super(context);

    }

    public CustomLinearLayoutManager(Context context, int orientation, boolean reverseLayout) {
        super(context, orientation, reverseLayout);
    }

    private int[] mMeasuredDimension = new int[2];

    @Override
    public void onMeasure(RecyclerView.Recycler recycler, RecyclerView.State state, int widthSpec, int heightSpec) {

        final int widthMode = View.MeasureSpec.getMode(widthSpec);
        final int heightMode = View.MeasureSpec.getMode(heightSpec);
        final int widthSize = View.MeasureSpec.getSize(widthSpec);
        final int heightSize = View.MeasureSpec.getSize(heightSpec);

        int width = 0;
        int height = 0;
        for (int i = 0; i < getItemCount(); i++) {
            measureScrapChild(recycler, i, View.MeasureSpec.makeMeasureSpec(i, View.MeasureSpec.UNSPECIFIED),
                    View.MeasureSpec.makeMeasureSpec(i, View.MeasureSpec.UNSPECIFIED),
                    mMeasuredDimension);

            if (getOrientation() == HORIZONTAL) {
                width = width + mMeasuredDimension[0];
                if (i == 0) {
                    height = mMeasuredDimension[1];
                }
            } else {
                height = height + mMeasuredDimension[1];
                if (i == 0) {
                    width = mMeasuredDimension[0];
                }
            }
        }
        switch (widthMode) {
            case View.MeasureSpec.EXACTLY:
                width = widthSize;

            case View.MeasureSpec.AT_MOST:
            case View.MeasureSpec.UNSPECIFIED:

Command not found when using sudo

Ok this is my solution: in ~/.bash_aliases just add the following:

# ADDS MY PATH WHEN SET AS ROOT
if [ $(id -u) = "0" ]; then
   export PATH=$PATH:/home/your_user/bin
fi

Voila! Now you can execute your own scripts with sudo or set as ROOT without having to do an export PATH=$PATH:/home/your_user/bin everytime.

Notice that I need to be explicit when adding my PATH since HOME for superuser is /root

Difference between git checkout --track origin/branch and git checkout -b branch origin/branch

The two commands have the same effect (thanks to Robert Siemer’s answer for pointing it out).

The practical difference comes when using a local branch named differently:

  • git checkout -b mybranch origin/abranch will create mybranch and track origin/abranch
  • git checkout --track origin/abranch will only create 'abranch', not a branch with a different name.

(That is, as commented by Sebastian Graf, if the local branch did not exist already.
If it did, you would need git checkout -B abranch origin/abranch)

Note: with Git 2.23 (Q3 2019), that would use the new command git switch:

git switch -c <branch> --track <remote>/<branch>

If the branch exists in multiple remotes and one of them is named by the checkout.defaultRemote configuration variable, we'll use that one for the purposes of disambiguation, even if the <branch> isn't unique across all remotes.
Set it to e.g. checkout.defaultRemote=origin to always checkout remote branches from there if <branch> is ambiguous but exists on the 'origin' remote.

Here, '-c' is the new '-b'.

First, some background: Tracking means that a local branch has its upstream set to a remote branch:

# git config branch.<branch-name>.remote origin
# git config branch.<branch-name>.merge refs/heads/branch

git checkout -b branch origin/branch will:

  • create/reset branch to the point referenced by origin/branch.
  • create the branch branch (with git branch) and track the remote tracking branch origin/branch.

When a local branch is started off a remote-tracking branch, Git sets up the branch (specifically the branch.<name>.remote and branch.<name>.merge configuration entries) so that git pull will appropriately merge from the remote-tracking branch.
This behavior may be changed via the global branch.autosetupmerge configuration flag. That setting can be overridden by using the --track and --no-track options, and changed later using git branch --set-upstream-to.

And git checkout --track origin/branch will do the same as git branch --set-upstream-to):

 # or, since 1.7.0
 git branch --set-upstream upstream/branch branch
 # or, since 1.8.0 (October 2012)
 git branch --set-upstream-to upstream/branch branch
 # the short version remains the same:
 git branch -u upstream/branch branch

It would also set the upstream for 'branch'.

(Note: git1.8.0 will deprecate git branch --set-upstream and replace it with git branch -u|--set-upstream-to: see git1.8.0-rc1 announce)

Having an upstream branch registered for a local branch will:

  • tell git to show the relationship between the two branches in git status and git branch -v.
  • directs git pull without arguments to pull from the upstream when the new branch is checked out.

See "How do you make an existing git branch track a remote branch?" for more.

response.sendRedirect() from Servlet to JSP does not seem to work

You can use this:

response.sendRedirect(String.format("%s%s", request.getContextPath(), "/views/equipment/createEquipment.jsp"));

The last part is your path in your web-app

Java 11 package javax.xml.bind does not exist

According to the release-notes, Java 11 removed the Java EE modules:

java.xml.bind (JAXB) - REMOVED
  • Java 8 - OK
  • Java 9 - DEPRECATED
  • Java 10 - DEPRECATED
  • Java 11 - REMOVED

See JEP 320 for more info.

You can fix the issue by using alternate versions of the Java EE technologies. Simply add Maven dependencies that contain the classes you need:

<dependency>
  <groupId>javax.xml.bind</groupId>
  <artifactId>jaxb-api</artifactId>
  <version>2.3.0</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
  <groupId>com.sun.xml.bind</groupId>
  <artifactId>jaxb-core</artifactId>
  <version>2.3.0</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
  <groupId>com.sun.xml.bind</groupId>
  <artifactId>jaxb-impl</artifactId>
  <version>2.3.0</version>
</dependency>

Jakarta EE 8 update (Mar 2020)

Instead of using old JAXB modules you can fix the issue by using Jakarta XML Binding from Jakarta EE 8:

<dependency>
  <groupId>jakarta.xml.bind</groupId>
  <artifactId>jakarta.xml.bind-api</artifactId>
  <version>2.3.3</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
  <groupId>com.sun.xml.bind</groupId>
  <artifactId>jaxb-impl</artifactId>
  <version>2.3.3</version>
  <scope>runtime</scope>
</dependency>

Jakarta EE 9 update (Nov 2020)

Use latest release of Eclipse Implementation of JAXB 3.0.0:

<dependency>
  <groupId>jakarta.xml.bind</groupId>
  <artifactId>jakarta.xml.bind-api</artifactId>
  <version>3.0.0</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
  <groupId>com.sun.xml.bind</groupId>
  <artifactId>jaxb-impl</artifactId>
  <version>3.0.0</version>
  <scope>runtime</scope>
</dependency>

Note: Jakarta EE 9 adopts new API package namespace jakarta.xml.bind.*, so update import statements:

javax.xml.bind -> jakarta.xml.bind

MySQL the right syntax to use near '' at line 1 error

the problem is because you have got the query over multiple lines using the " " that PHP is actually sending all the white spaces in to MySQL which is causing it to error out.

Either put it on one line or append on each line :o)

Sqlyog must be trimming white spaces on each line which explains why its working.

Example:

$qr2="INSERT INTO wp_bp_activity
      (
            user_id,
 (this stuff)component,
     (is)      `type`,
    (a)        `action`,
  (problem)  content,
             primary_link,
             item_id,....

String formatting: % vs. .format vs. string literal

% gives better performance than format from my test.

Test code:

Python 2.7.2:

import timeit
print 'format:', timeit.timeit("'{}{}{}'.format(1, 1.23, 'hello')")
print '%:', timeit.timeit("'%s%s%s' % (1, 1.23, 'hello')")

Result:

> format: 0.470329046249
> %: 0.357107877731

Python 3.5.2

import timeit
print('format:', timeit.timeit("'{}{}{}'.format(1, 1.23, 'hello')"))
print('%:', timeit.timeit("'%s%s%s' % (1, 1.23, 'hello')"))

Result

> format: 0.5864730989560485
> %: 0.013593495357781649

It looks in Python2, the difference is small whereas in Python3, % is much faster than format.

Thanks @Chris Cogdon for the sample code.

Edit 1:

Tested again in Python 3.7.2 in July 2019.

Result:

> format: 0.86600608
> %: 0.630180146

There is not much difference. I guess Python is improving gradually.

Edit 2:

After someone mentioned python 3's f-string in comment, I did a test for the following code under python 3.7.2 :

import timeit
print('format:', timeit.timeit("'{}{}{}'.format(1, 1.23, 'hello')"))
print('%:', timeit.timeit("'%s%s%s' % (1, 1.23, 'hello')"))
print('f-string:', timeit.timeit("f'{1}{1.23}{\"hello\"}'"))

Result:

format: 0.8331376779999999
%: 0.6314778750000001
f-string: 0.766649943

It seems f-string is still slower than % but better than format.

How can I truncate a string to the first 20 words in PHP?

To Nearest Space

Truncates to nearest preceding space of target character. Demo

  • $str The string to be truncated
  • $chars The amount of characters to be stripped, can be overridden by $to_space
  • $to_space boolean for whether or not to truncate from space near $chars limit

Function

function truncateString($str, $chars, $to_space, $replacement="...") {
   if($chars > strlen($str)) return $str;

   $str = substr($str, 0, $chars);
   $space_pos = strrpos($str, " ");
   if($to_space && $space_pos >= 0)
       $str = substr($str, 0, strrpos($str, " "));

   return($str . $replacement);
}

Sample

<?php

$str = "this is a string that is just some text for you to test with";

print(truncateString($str, 20, false) . "\n");
print(truncateString($str, 22, false) . "\n");
print(truncateString($str, 24, true) . "\n");
print(truncateString($str, 26, true, " :)") . "\n");
print(truncateString($str, 28, true, "--") . "\n");

?>

Output

this is a string tha...
this is a string that ...
this is a string that...
this is a string that is :)
this is a string that is--

How can I view the contents of an ElasticSearch index?

I can recommend Elasticvue, which is modern, free and open source. It allows accessing your ES instance via browser add-ons quite easily (supports Firefox, Chrome, Edge). But there are also further ways.

Just make sure you set cors values in elasticsearch.yml appropiate.

How to enable CORS in ASP.NET Core

Got this working with .Net Core 3.1 as follows

1.Make sure you place the UseCors code between app.UseRouting(); and app.UseAuthentication();

        app.UseHttpsRedirection();

        app.UseRouting();
        app.UseCors("CorsApi");

        app.UseAuthentication();
        app.UseAuthorization();

        app.UseEndpoints(endpoints => {
            endpoints.MapControllers();
        });

2.Then place this code in the ConfigureServices method

services.AddCors(options =>
        {
            options.AddPolicy("CorsApi",
                builder => builder.WithOrigins("http://localhost:4200", "http://mywebsite.com")
            .AllowAnyHeader()
            .AllowAnyMethod());
        });

3.And above the base controller I placed this

[EnableCors("CorsApi")]
[Route("api/[controller]")]
[ApiController]
public class BaseController : ControllerBase

Now all my controllers will inherit from the BaseController and will have CORS enabled

How to set up googleTest as a shared library on Linux

The following method avoids manually messing with the /usr/lib directory while also requiring minimal change in your CMakeLists.txt file. It also lets your package manager cleanly uninstall libgtest-dev.

The idea is that when you get the libgtest-dev package via

sudo apt install libgtest-dev

The source is stored in location /usr/src/googletest

You can simply point your CMakeLists.txt to that directory so that it can find the necessary dependencies

Simply replace FindGTest with add_subdirectory(/usr/src/googletest gtest)

At the end, it should look like this

add_subdirectory(/usr/src/googletest gtest)
target_link_libraries(your_executable gtest)

How do you add an action to a button programmatically in xcode

Try this:

Swift 4

myButton.addTarget(self,
                   action: #selector(myAction),
                   for: .touchUpInside)

Objective-C

[myButton addTarget:self
             action:@selector(myAction)
   forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];

You can find a rich source of information in Apple's Documentation. Have a look at the UIButton's documentation, it will reveal that UIButton is a descendant of UIControl, which implements the method to add targets.

You'll need to pay attention to whether add colon or not after myAction in action:@selector(myAction)

Here's the reference.

How to decode a Base64 string?

Base64 encoding converts three 8-bit bytes (0-255) into four 6-bit bytes (0-63 aka base64). Each of the four bytes indexes an ASCII string which represents the final output as four 8-bit ASCII characters. The indexed string is typically 'A-Za-z0-9+/' with '=' used as padding. This is why encoded data is 4/3 longer.

Base64 decoding is the inverse process. And as one would expect, the decoded data is 3/4 as long.

While base64 encoding can encode plain text, its real benefit is encoding non-printable characters which may be interpreted by transmitting systems as control characters.

I suggest the original poster render $z as bytes with each bit having meaning to the application. Rendering non-printable characters as text typically invokes Unicode which produces glyphs based on your system's localization.

Base64decode("the answer to life the universe and everything") = 00101010

How to fix: Handler "PageHandlerFactory-Integrated" has a bad module "ManagedPipelineHandler" in its module list

I added the ISAPI/CGI paths for .Net 4. Which didn't fix the issue. So I then ran a repair on the .Net V4 (Client and Extended) installation. Which asked for a reboot. This fixed it for me.

ScalaTest in sbt: is there a way to run a single test without tags?

This is now supported (since ScalaTest 2.1.3) within interactive mode:

testOnly *MySuite -- -z foo

to run only the tests whose name includes the substring "foo".

For exact match rather than substring, use -t instead of -z.

Android Stop Emulator from Command Line

If you don't want to have to know the serial name of your device for adb -s emulator-5554 emu kill, then you can just use adb -e emu kill to kill a single emulator. This won't kill anything if you have more than one emulator running at once, but it's useful for automation where you start and stop a single emulator for a test.

configuring project ':app' failed to find Build Tools revision

It happens because Build Tools revision 24.4.1 doesn't exist.

The latest version is 23.0.2.
These tools is included in the SDK package and installed in the <sdk>/build-tools/ directory.

Don't confuse the Android SDK Tools with SDK Build Tools.

Change in your build.gradle

Getting the difference between two repositories

Once you have both branches in one repository you can do a git diff. And getting them in one repository is as easy as

git fetch /the/other/repo/.git refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/other/*

Angular2: custom pipe could not be found

I encountered a similar issue, but putting it in my page’s module didn’t work.

I had created a component, which needed a pipe. This component was declared and exported in a ComponentsModule file, which holds all of the app’s custom components.

I had to put my PipesModule in my ComponentsModule as an import, in order for these components to use these pipes and not in the page’s module using that component.

Laravel Check If Related Model Exists

In php 7.2+ you can't use count on the relation object, so there's no one-fits-all method for all relations. Use query method instead as @tremby provided below:

$model->relation()->exists()

generic solution working on all the relation types (pre php 7.2):

if (count($model->relation))
{
  // exists
}

This will work for every relation since dynamic properties return Model or Collection. Both implement ArrayAccess.

So it goes like this:

single relations: hasOne / belongsTo / morphTo / morphOne

// no related model
$model->relation; // null
count($model->relation); // 0 evaluates to false

// there is one
$model->relation; // Eloquent Model
count($model->relation); // 1 evaluates to true

to-many relations: hasMany / belongsToMany / morphMany / morphToMany / morphedByMany

// no related collection
$model->relation; // Collection with 0 items evaluates to true
count($model->relation); // 0 evaluates to false

// there are related models
$model->relation; // Collection with 1 or more items, evaluates to true as well
count($model->relation); // int > 0 that evaluates to true

Why does ENOENT mean "No such file or directory"?

It's simply “No such directory entry”. Since directory entries can be directories or files (or symlinks, or sockets, or pipes, or devices), the name ENOFILE would have been too narrow in its meaning.

Android notification is not showing

Notifications may not be shown if you show the notifications rapidly one after the other or cancel an existing one, then right away show it again (e.g. to trigger a heads-up-notification to notify the user about a change in an ongoing notification). In these cases the system may decide to just block the notification when it feels they might become too overwhelming/spammy for the user.

Please note, that at least on stock Android (tested with 10) from the outside this behavior looks a bit random: it just sometimes happens and sometimes it doesn't. My guess is, there is a very short time threshold during which you are not allowed to send too many notifications. Calling NotificationManager.cancel() and then NotificationManager.notify() might then sometimes cause this behavior.

If you have the option, when updating a notification don't cancel it before, but just call NotificationManager.notify() with the updated notification. This doesn't seem to trigger the aforementioned blocking by the system.

VSCode single to double quote automatic replace

For newbies like me:

Converting String array to java.util.List

import java.util.Collections;

List myList = new ArrayList();
String[] myArray = new String[] {"Java", "Util", "List"};

Collections.addAll(myList, myArray);

When to use a linked list over an array/array list?

I think that main difference is whether you frequently need to insert or remove stuff from the top of the list.

With an array, if you remove something from the top of list than the complexity is o(n) because all of the indices of the array elements will have to shift.

With a linked list, it is o(1) because you need only create the node, reassign the head and assign the reference to next as the previous head.

When frequently inserting or removing at the end of the list, arrays are preferable because the complexity will be o(1), no reindexing is required, but for a linked list it will be o(n) because you need to go from the head to the last node.

I think that searching in both linked list and arrays will be o(log n) because you will be probably be using a binary search.

What would be the best method to code heading/title for <ul> or <ol>, Like we have <caption> in <table>?

Though this is old, I'm updating it for others who might find this question when searching later.

@Matt Kelliher:

Using the css :before and a data-* attribute for the list is a great idea, but can be modified slightly to be more handicap accessible as well:

HTML:

<ul aria-label="Vehicle Models Available:">
    <li>Dodge Shadow</li>
    <li>Ford Focus</li>
    <li>Chevy Lumina</li>
</ul>

CSS:

ul:before{
    content:attr(aria-label);
    font-size:120%;
    font-weight:bold;
    margin-left:-15px;
}

This will make a list with the "header" pseudo element above it with text set to the value in the aria-label attribute. You can then easily style it to your needs.

The benefit of this over using a data-* attribute is that aria-label will be read off by screen readers as a "label" for the list, which is semantically correct for your intended use of this data.

Note: IE8 supports :before attributes, but must use the single colon version (and must have a valid doctype defined). IE7 does not support :before, but Modernizer or Selectivizr should fix that issue for you. All modern browsers support the older :before syntax, but prefer that the ::before syntax be used. Generally the best way to handle this is to have an external stylesheet for IE7/8 that uses the old format and a general stylesheet using the new format, but in practice, most just use the old single colon format since it is still 100% cross browser, even if not technically valid for CSS3.

Excel how to find values in 1 column exist in the range of values in another

Use the formula by tigeravatar:

=COUNTIF($B$2:$B$5,A2)>0 – tigeravatar Aug 28 '13 at 14:50

as conditional formatting. Highlight column A. Choose conditional formatting by forumula. Enter the formula (above) - this finds values in col B that are also in A. Choose a format (I like to use FILL and a bold color).

To find all of those values, highlight col A. Data > Filter and choose Filter by color.

What is the python keyword "with" used for?

In python the with keyword is used when working with unmanaged resources (like file streams). It is similar to the using statement in VB.NET and C#. It allows you to ensure that a resource is "cleaned up" when the code that uses it finishes running, even if exceptions are thrown. It provides 'syntactic sugar' for try/finally blocks.

From Python Docs:

The with statement clarifies code that previously would use try...finally blocks to ensure that clean-up code is executed. In this section, I’ll discuss the statement as it will commonly be used. In the next section, I’ll examine the implementation details and show how to write objects for use with this statement.

The with statement is a control-flow structure whose basic structure is:

with expression [as variable]:
    with-block

The expression is evaluated, and it should result in an object that supports the context management protocol (that is, has __enter__() and __exit__() methods).

Update fixed VB callout per Scott Wisniewski's comment. I was indeed confusing with with using.

Change value of input and submit form in JavaScript

No. When your input type is submit, you should have an onsubmit event declared in the markup and then do the changes you want. Meaning, have an onsubmit defined in your form tag.

Otherwise change the input type to a button and then define an onclick event for that button.

Bound method error

I think you meant print test.sorted_word_list instead of print test.sort_word_list.

In addition list.sort() sorts a list in place and returns None, so you probably want to change sort_word_list() to do the following:

self.sorted_word_list = sorted(self.word_list)

You should also consider either renaming your num_words() function, or changing the attribute that the function assigns to, because currently you overwrite the function with an integer on the first call.

NSArray + remove item from array

This category may be to your taste. But! Be frugal with its usage; since we are converting to a NSMutableArray and back again, it's not at all efficient.

@implementation NSArray (mxcl)

- (NSArray *)arrayByRemovingObject:(id)obj
{
    if (!obj) return [self copy]; // copy because all array* methods return new arrays
    NSMutableArray *mutableArray = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray:self];
    [mutableArray removeObject:obj];
    return [NSArray arrayWithArray:mutableArray];
}

@end

If hasClass then addClass to parent

You can't use $(this) since jQuery doesn't know what it is there. You seem to be overcomplicating things. You can do $('#content h1.aktiv').hide(). There's no reason to test to see if the class exists.

Loop through files in a folder using VBA?

Fluid width with equally spaced DIVs

If you know the number of elements per "row" and the width of the container you can use a selector to add a margin to the elements you need to cause a justified look.

I had rows of three divs I wanted justified so used the:

.tile:nth-child(3n+2) { margin: 0 10px }

this allows the center div in each row to have a margin that forces the 1st and 3rd div to the outside edges of the container

Also great for other things like borders background colors etc

java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.Long cannot be cast to java.lang.Integer in java 1.6

The number of results can (theoretically) be greater than the range of an integer. I would refactor the code and work with the returned long value instead.

What is the difference between i++ and ++i?

The typical answer to this question, unfortunately posted here already, is that one does the increment "before" remaining operations and the other does the increment "after" remaining operations. Though that intuitively gets the idea across, that statement is on the face of it completely wrong. The sequence of events in time is extremely well-defined in C#, and it is emphatically not the case that the prefix (++var) and postfix (var++) versions of ++ do things in a different order with respect to other operations.

It is unsurprising that you'll see a lot of wrong answers to this question. A great many "teach yourself C#" books also get it wrong. Also, the way C# does it is different than how C does it. Many people reason as though C# and C are the same language; they are not. The design of the increment and decrement operators in C# in my opinion avoids the design flaws of these operators in C.

There are two questions that must be answered to determine what exactly the operation of prefix and postfix ++ are in C#. The first question is what is the result? and the second question is when does the side effect of the increment take place?

It is not obvious what the answer to either question is, but it is actually quite simple once you see it. Let me spell out for you precisely what x++ and ++x do for a variable x.

For the prefix form (++x):

  1. x is evaluated to produce the variable
  2. The value of the variable is copied to a temporary location
  3. The temporary value is incremented to produce a new value (not overwriting the temporary!)
  4. The new value is stored in the variable
  5. The result of the operation is the new value (i.e. the incremented value of the temporary)

For the postfix form (x++):

  1. x is evaluated to produce the variable
  2. The value of the variable is copied to a temporary location
  3. The temporary value is incremented to produce a new value (not overwriting the temporary!)
  4. The new value is stored in the variable
  5. The result of the operation is the value of the temporary

Some things to notice:

First, the order of events in time is exactly the same in both cases. Again, it is absolutely not the case that the order of events in time changes between prefix and postfix. It is entirely false to say that the evaluation happens before other evaluations or after other evaluations. The evaluations happen in exactly the same order in both cases as you can see by steps 1 through 4 being identical. The only difference is the last step - whether the result is the value of the temporary, or the new, incremented value.

You can easily demonstrate this with a simple C# console app:

public class Application
{
    public static int currentValue = 0;

    public static void Main()
    {
        Console.WriteLine("Test 1: ++x");
        (++currentValue).TestMethod();

        Console.WriteLine("\nTest 2: x++");
        (currentValue++).TestMethod();

        Console.WriteLine("\nTest 3: ++x");
        (++currentValue).TestMethod();

        Console.ReadKey();
    }
}

public static class ExtensionMethods
{
    public static void TestMethod(this int passedInValue)
    {
        Console.WriteLine("Current:{0} Passed-in:{1}",
            Application.currentValue,
            passedInValue);
    }
}

Here are the results...

Test 1: ++x
Current:1 Passed-in:1

Test 2: x++
Current:2 Passed-in:1

Test 3: ++x
Current:3 Passed-in:3

In the first test, you can see that both currentValue and what was passed in to the TestMethod() extension show the same value, as expected.

However, in the second case, people will try to tell you that the increment of currentValue happens after the call to TestMethod(), but as you can see from the results, it happens before the call as indicated by the 'Current:2' result.

In this case, first the value of currentValue is stored in a temporary. Next, an incremented version of that value is stored back in currentValue but without touching the temporary which still stores the original value. Finally that temporary is passed to TestMethod(). If the increment happened after the call to TestMethod() then it would write out the same, non-incremented value twice, but it does not.

It's important to note that the value returned from both the currentValue++ and ++currentValue operations are based on the temporary and not the actual value stored in the variable at the time either operation exits.

Recall in the order of operations above, the first two steps copy the then-current value of the variable into the temporary. That is what's used to calculate the return value; in the case of the prefix version, it's that temporary value incremented while in the case of the suffix version, it's that value directly/non-incremented. The variable itself is not read again after the initial storage into the temporary.

Put more simply, the postfix version returns the value that was read from the variable (i.e. the value of the temporary) while the prefix version returns the value that was written back to the variable (i.e. the incremented value of the temporary). Neither return the variable's value.

This is important to understand because the variable itself could be volatile and have changed on another thread which means the return value of those operations could differ from the current value stored in the variable.

It is surprisingly common for people to get very confused about precedence, associativity, and the order in which side effects are executed, I suspect mostly because it is so confusing in C. C# has been carefully designed to be less confusing in all these regards. For some additional analysis of these issues, including me further demonstrating the falsity of the idea that prefix and postfix operations "move stuff around in time" see:

https://ericlippert.com/2009/08/10/precedence-vs-order-redux/

which led to this SO question:

int[] arr={0}; int value = arr[arr[0]++]; Value = 1?

Injection of autowired dependencies failed;

The error shows that com.bd.service.ArticleService is not a registered bean. Add the packages in which you have beans that will be autowired in your application context:

<context:component-scan base-package="com.bd.service"/>
<context:component-scan base-package="com.bd.controleur"/>

Alternatively, if you want to include all subpackages in com.bd:

<context:component-scan base-package="com.bd">
     <context:include-filter type="aspectj" expression="com.bd.*" />
</context:component-scan>

As a side note, if you're using Spring 3.1 or later, you can take advantage of the @ComponentScan annotation, so that you don't have to use any xml configuration regarding component-scan. Use it in conjunction with @Configuration.

@Controller
@RequestMapping("/Article/GererArticle")
@Configuration
@ComponentScan("com.bd.service") // No need to include component-scan in xml
public class ArticleControleur {

    @Autowired
    ArticleService articleService;
    ...
}

SQL Server: Attach incorrect version 661

To clarify, a database created under SQL Server 2008 R2 was being opened in an instance of SQL Server 2008 (the version prior to R2). The solution for me was to simply perform an upgrade installation of SQL Server 2008 R2. I can only speak for the Express edition, but it worked.

Oddly, though, the Web Platform Installer indicated that I had Express R2 installed. The better way to tell is to ask the database server itself:

SELECT @@VERSION

How to upload, display and save images using node.js and express

First of all, you should make an HTML form containing a file input element. You also need to set the form's enctype attribute to multipart/form-data:

<form method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data" action="/upload">
    <input type="file" name="file">
    <input type="submit" value="Submit">
</form>

Assuming the form is defined in index.html stored in a directory named public relative to where your script is located, you can serve it this way:

const http = require("http");
const path = require("path");
const fs = require("fs");

const express = require("express");

const app = express();
const httpServer = http.createServer(app);

const PORT = process.env.PORT || 3000;

httpServer.listen(PORT, () => {
  console.log(`Server is listening on port ${PORT}`);
});

// put the HTML file containing your form in a directory named "public" (relative to where this script is located)
app.get("/", express.static(path.join(__dirname, "./public")));

Once that's done, users will be able to upload files to your server via that form. But to reassemble the uploaded file in your application, you'll need to parse the request body (as multipart form data).

In Express 3.x you could use express.bodyParser middleware to handle multipart forms but as of Express 4.x, there's no body parser bundled with the framework. Luckily, you can choose from one of the many available multipart/form-data parsers out there. Here, I'll be using multer:

You need to define a route to handle form posts:

const multer = require("multer");

const handleError = (err, res) => {
  res
    .status(500)
    .contentType("text/plain")
    .end("Oops! Something went wrong!");
};

const upload = multer({
  dest: "/path/to/temporary/directory/to/store/uploaded/files"
  // you might also want to set some limits: https://github.com/expressjs/multer#limits
});

app.post(
  "/upload",
  upload.single("file" /* name attribute of <file> element in your form */),
  (req, res) => {
    const tempPath = req.file.path;
    const targetPath = path.join(__dirname, "./uploads/image.png");

    if (path.extname(req.file.originalname).toLowerCase() === ".png") {
      fs.rename(tempPath, targetPath, err => {
        if (err) return handleError(err, res);

        res
          .status(200)
          .contentType("text/plain")
          .end("File uploaded!");
      });
    } else {
      fs.unlink(tempPath, err => {
        if (err) return handleError(err, res);

        res
          .status(403)
          .contentType("text/plain")
          .end("Only .png files are allowed!");
      });
    }
  }
);

In the example above, .png files posted to /upload will be saved to uploaded directory relative to where the script is located.

In order to show the uploaded image, assuming you already have an HTML page containing an img element:

<img src="/image.png" />

you can define another route in your express app and use res.sendFile to serve the stored image:

app.get("/image.png", (req, res) => {
  res.sendFile(path.join(__dirname, "./uploads/image.png"));
});

PHP exec() vs system() vs passthru()

They have slightly different purposes.

  • exec() is for calling a system command, and perhaps dealing with the output yourself.
  • system() is for executing a system command and immediately displaying the output - presumably text.
  • passthru() is for executing a system command which you wish the raw return from - presumably something binary.

Regardless, I suggest you not use any of them. They all produce highly unportable code.

How does String substring work in Swift

Swift 5
let desiredIndex: Int = 7 let substring = str[String.Index(encodedOffset: desiredIndex)...]
This substring variable will give you the result.
Simply here Int is converted to Index and then you can split the strings. Unless you will get errors.

JavaScript displaying a float to 2 decimal places

Don't know how I got to this question, but even if it's many years since this has been asked, I would like to add a quick and simple method I follow and it has never let me down:

var fixedNum = parseFloat(num).toFixed( 2 );

Access IP Camera in Python OpenCV

An IP camera can be accessed in opencv by providing the streaming URL of the camera in the constructor of cv2.VideoCapture.

Usually, RTSP or HTTP protocol is used by the camera to stream video. An example of IP camera streaming URL is as follows:

rtsp://192.168.1.64/1

It can be opened with OpenCV like this:

capture = cv2.VideoCapture('rtsp://192.168.1.64/1')

Most of the IP cameras have a username and password to access the video. In such case, the credentials have to be provided in the streaming URL as follows:

capture = cv2.VideoCapture('rtsp://username:[email protected]/1')

What is the difference between a JavaBean and a POJO?

A JavaBean follows certain conventions. Getter/setter naming, having a public default constructor, being serialisable etc. See JavaBeans Conventions for more details.

A POJO (plain-old-Java-object) isn't rigorously defined. It's a Java object that doesn't have a requirement to implement a particular interface or derive from a particular base class, or make use of particular annotations in order to be compatible with a given framework, and can be any arbitrary (often relatively simple) Java object.

How to open standard Google Map application from my application?

Using String format will help but you must be care full with the locale. In germany float will be separates with in comma instead an point.

Using String.format("geo:%f,%f",5.1,2.1); on locale english the result will be "geo:5.1,2.1" but with locale german you will get "geo:5,1,2,1"

You should use the English locale to prevent this behavior.

String uri = String.format(Locale.ENGLISH, "geo:%f,%f", latitude, longitude);
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse(uri));
context.startActivity(intent);

To set an label to the geo point you can extend your geo uri by using:

!!! but be carefull with this the geo-uri is still under develoment http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-mayrhofer-geo-uri-00

String uri = String.format(Locale.ENGLISH, "geo:%f,%f?z=%d&q=%f,%f (%s)",
                           latitude, longitude, zoom, latitude, longitude, label);
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse(uri));
context.startActivity(intent);

Update Angular model after setting input value with jQuery

You have to use the following code in order to update the scope of the specific input model as follows

$('button').on('click', function(){
    var newVal = $(this).data('val');
    $('select').val(newVal).change();

    var scope = angular.element($("select")).scope();
    scope.$apply(function(){
        scope.selectValue = newVal;
    });
});

Symfony2 Setting a default choice field selection

From the docs:

public Form createNamed(string|FormTypeInterface $type, string $name, mixed $data = null, array $options = array())

mixed $data = null is the default options. So for example I have a field called status and I implemented it as so:

$default = array('Status' => 'pending');

$filter_form = $this->get('form.factory')->createNamedBuilder('filter', 'form', $default)
        ->add('Status', 'choice', array(
            'choices' => array(
                '' => 'Please Select...',
                'rejected' => 'Rejected',
                'incomplete' => 'Incomplete',
                'pending' => 'Pending',
                'approved' => 'Approved',
                'validated' => 'Validated',
                'processed' => 'Processed'
            )
        ))->getForm();

make html text input field grow as I type?

Here you can try something like this

EDIT: REVISED EXAMPLE (added one new solution) http://jsfiddle.net/jszjz/10/

Code explanation

var jqThis = $('#adjinput'), //object of the input field in jQuery
    fontSize = parseInt( jqThis.css('font-size') ) / 2, //its font-size
    //its min Width (the box won't become smaller than this
    minWidth= parseInt( jqThis.css('min-width') ),
    //its maxWidth (the box won't become bigger than this)
    maxWidth= parseInt( jqThis.css('max-width') );

jqThis.bind('keydown', function(e){ //on key down
   var newVal = (this.value.length * fontSize); //compute the new width

   if( newVal > minWidth && newVal <= maxWidth ) //check to see if it is within Min and Max
       this.style.width = newVal + 'px'; //update the value.
});

and the css is pretty straightforward too

#adjinput{
    max-width:200px !important;
    width:40px;
    min-width:40px;
    font-size:11px;
}

EDIT: Another solution is to havethe user type what he wants and on blur (focus out), grab the string (in the same font size) place it in a div - count the div's width - and then with a nice animate with a cool easing effect update the input fields width. The only drawback is that the input field will remain "small" while the user types. Or you can add a timeout : ) you can check such a kind of solution on the fiddle above too!

Renaming a branch in GitHub

Just remove the old branch and create new one.

Example (solely renaming the remote branch):

git push origin :refs/heads/oldname
git push origin newname:refs/heads/newname

You also probably should rename local branch and change settings for where to push/pull.

How to get the index of an item in a list in a single step?

How about the List.FindIndex Method:

int index = myList.FindIndex(a => a.Prop == oProp);

This method performs a linear search; therefore, this method is an O(n) operation, where n is Count.

If the item is not found, it will return -1

RabbitMQ / AMQP: single queue, multiple consumers for same message?

Can I have each consumer receive the same messages? Ie, both consumers get message 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6? What is this called in AMQP/RabbitMQ speak? How is it normally configured?

No, not if the consumers are on the same queue. From RabbitMQ's AMQP Concepts guide:

it is important to understand that, in AMQP 0-9-1, messages are load balanced between consumers.

This seems to imply that round-robin behavior within a queue is a given, and not configurable. Ie, separate queues are required in order to have the same message ID be handled by multiple consumers.

Is this commonly done? Should I just have the exchange route the message into two separate queues, with a single consumer, instead?

No it's not, single queue/multiple consumers with each each consumer handling the same message ID isn't possible. Having the exchange route the message onto into two separate queues is indeed better.

As I don't require too complex routing, a fanout exchange will handle this nicely. I didn't focus too much on Exchanges earlier as node-amqp has the concept of a 'default exchange' allowing you to publish messages to a connection directly, however most AMQP messages are published to a specific exchange.

Here's my fanout exchange, both sending and receiving:

var amqp = require('amqp');
var connection = amqp.createConnection({ host: "localhost", port: 5672 });
var count = 1;

connection.on('ready', function () {
  connection.exchange("my_exchange", options={type:'fanout'}, function(exchange) {

    var sendMessage = function(exchange, payload) {
      console.log('about to publish')
      var encoded_payload = JSON.stringify(payload);
      exchange.publish('', encoded_payload, {})
    }

    // Recieve messages
    connection.queue("my_queue_name", function(queue){
      console.log('Created queue')
      queue.bind(exchange, '');
      queue.subscribe(function (message) {
        console.log('subscribed to queue')
        var encoded_payload = unescape(message.data)
        var payload = JSON.parse(encoded_payload)
        console.log('Recieved a message:')
        console.log(payload)
      })
    })

    setInterval( function() {
      var test_message = 'TEST '+count
      sendMessage(exchange, test_message)
      count += 1;
    }, 2000)
 })

This is untested, but I believe the syntax should work for a lambda query. As you join more tables with this syntax you have to drill further down into the new objects to reach the values you want to manipulate.

var fullEntries = dbContext.tbl_EntryPoint
    .Join(
        dbContext.tbl_Entry,
        entryPoint => entryPoint.EID,
        entry => entry.EID,
        (entryPoint, entry) => new { entryPoint, entry }
    )
    .Join(
        dbContext.tbl_Title,
        combinedEntry => combinedEntry.entry.TID,
        title => title.TID,
        (combinedEntry, title) => new
        {
            UID = combinedEntry.entry.OwnerUID,
            TID = combinedEntry.entry.TID,
            EID = combinedEntry.entryPoint.EID,
            Title = title.Title
        }
    )
    .Where(fullEntry => fullEntry.UID == user.UID)
    .Take(10);

Can I disable a CSS :hover effect via JavaScript?

Use a second class that has only the hover assigned:

HTML

 <a class="myclass myclass_hover" href="#">My anchor</a>

CSS

 .myclass {
   /* all anchor styles */
 }
 .myclass_hover:hover {
   /* example color */
   color:#00A;
 }

Now you can use Jquery to remove the class, for instance if the element has been clicked:

JQUERY

 $('.myclass').click( function(e) {
    e.preventDefault();
    $(this).removeClass('myclass_hover');
 });

Hope this answer is helpful.

Xcode: failed to get the task for process

I had this same problem, however in a little bit different situation. One day my application launches fine (using developer provision), then I do some minor editing to my Entitlements file, and after that it stops working. The application installed fine on my device, however every time I tried to launch it, it exited instantly (after the opening animation). (As I made edits to other files too, I did not suspect the following problem)

The problem was in the Entitlements file format, seems so that the following declarations are not the same:

Correct:

<key>get-task-allow</key>
<true/>

Incorrect:

<key>get-task-allow</key>
<true />

Altough it's an XML format, do not use spaces in the tag or the Xcode will not be able to connect to the process.

I was using developer provisioning profile all along.

Edit: Also make sure the line ending in your Entitlements file are \n (LF) instead of \r\n (CRLF). If you edit the entitlements file on Windows using CRLF line endings may cause your application to fail to launch.

Open existing file, append a single line

using (StreamWriter w = File.AppendText("myFile.txt"))
{
  w.WriteLine("hello");
}

Prevent div from moving while resizing the page

1 - remove the margin from your BODY CSS.

2 - wrap all of your html in a wrapper <div id="wrapper"> ... all your body content </div>

3 - Define the CSS for the wrapper:

This will hold everything together, centered on the page.

#wrapper {
    margin-left:auto;
    margin-right:auto;
    width:960px;
}

Send an Array with an HTTP Get

That depends on what the target server accepts. There is no definitive standard for this. See also a.o. Wikipedia: Query string:

While there is no definitive standard, most web frameworks allow multiple values to be associated with a single field (e.g. field1=value1&field1=value2&field2=value3).[4][5]

Generally, when the target server uses a strong typed programming language like Java (Servlet), then you can just send them as multiple parameters with the same name. The API usually offers a dedicated method to obtain multiple parameter values as an array.

foo=value1&foo=value2&foo=value3
String[] foo = request.getParameterValues("foo"); // [value1, value2, value3]

The request.getParameter("foo") will also work on it, but it'll return only the first value.

String foo = request.getParameter("foo"); // value1

And, when the target server uses a weak typed language like PHP or RoR, then you need to suffix the parameter name with braces [] in order to trigger the language to return an array of values instead of a single value.

foo[]=value1&foo[]=value2&foo[]=value3
$foo = $_GET["foo"]; // [value1, value2, value3]
echo is_array($foo); // true

In case you still use foo=value1&foo=value2&foo=value3, then it'll return only the first value.

$foo = $_GET["foo"]; // value1
echo is_array($foo); // false

Do note that when you send foo[]=value1&foo[]=value2&foo[]=value3 to a Java Servlet, then you can still obtain them, but you'd need to use the exact parameter name including the braces.

String[] foo = request.getParameterValues("foo[]"); // [value1, value2, value3]

Run certain code every n seconds

My humble take on the subject, a generalization of Alex Martelli's answer, with start() and stop() control:

from threading import Timer

class RepeatedTimer(object):
    def __init__(self, interval, function, *args, **kwargs):
        self._timer     = None
        self.interval   = interval
        self.function   = function
        self.args       = args
        self.kwargs     = kwargs
        self.is_running = False
        self.start()

    def _run(self):
        self.is_running = False
        self.start()
        self.function(*self.args, **self.kwargs)

    def start(self):
        if not self.is_running:
            self._timer = Timer(self.interval, self._run)
            self._timer.start()
            self.is_running = True

    def stop(self):
        self._timer.cancel()
        self.is_running = False

Usage:

from time import sleep

def hello(name):
    print "Hello %s!" % name

print "starting..."
rt = RepeatedTimer(1, hello, "World") # it auto-starts, no need of rt.start()
try:
    sleep(5) # your long-running job goes here...
finally:
    rt.stop() # better in a try/finally block to make sure the program ends!

Features:

  • Standard library only, no external dependencies
  • start() and stop() are safe to call multiple times even if the timer has already started/stopped
  • function to be called can have positional and named arguments
  • You can change interval anytime, it will be effective after next run. Same for args, kwargs and even function!

RestTemplate: How to send URL and query parameters together

I would use buildAndExpand from UriComponentsBuilder to pass all types of URI parameters.

For example:

String url = "http://test.com/solarSystem/planets/{planet}/moons/{moon}";

// URI (URL) parameters
Map<String, String> urlParams = new HashMap<>();
urlParams.put("planets", "Mars");
urlParams.put("moons", "Phobos");

// Query parameters
UriComponentsBuilder builder = UriComponentsBuilder.fromUriString(url)
        // Add query parameter
        .queryParam("firstName", "Mark")
        .queryParam("lastName", "Watney");

System.out.println(builder.buildAndExpand(urlParams).toUri());
/**
 * Console output:
 * http://test.com/solarSystem/planets/Mars/moons/Phobos?firstName=Mark&lastName=Watney
 */

restTemplate.exchange(builder.buildAndExpand(urlParams).toUri() , HttpMethod.PUT,
        requestEntity, class_p);

/**
 * Log entry:
 * org.springframework.web.client.RestTemplate Created PUT request for "http://test.com/solarSystem/planets/Mars/moons/Phobos?firstName=Mark&lastName=Watney"
 */

ORA-01017 Invalid Username/Password when connecting to 11g database from 9i client

I know this post was about 11g, but a bug in the 12c client with how it encrypts passwords may be to blame for this error if you decide to use that one and you:

  • Don't have the password case-sensitivity issue (i.e. you tried ALTER SYSTEM SET SEC_CASE_SENSITIVE_LOGON = FALSE and resetting the password and still doesn't work),
  • Put quotes around your password in your connection string and it still doesn't help,
  • You've verified all of your environmental variables (ORACLE_HOME, PATH, TNS_ADMIN), and the TNS_ADMIN registry string at HKLM\Software\Oracle\KEY_OraClient12Home is in place,
  • You've verified your connection string and user name/password combination works in Net Manager, and
  • You can connect using SQL*Plus, Oracle SQL Developer using the same credentials.

All the basic checks.

Fix: Try setting HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\FIPSAlgorithmPolicy\Enabled to 0 in the registry (regedit) to disable FIPS.

How to disable the back button in the browser using JavaScript

One cannot disable the browser back button functionality. The only thing that can be done is prevent them.

The below JavaScript code needs to be placed in the head section of the page where you don’t want the user to revisit using the back button:

<script>
    function preventBack() {
        window.history.forward();
    }

    setTimeout("preventBack()", 0);
    window.onunload = function() {
        null
    };
</script>

Suppose there are two pages Page1.php and Page2.php and Page1.php redirects to Page2.php.

Hence to prevent user from visiting Page1.php using the back button you will need to place the above script in the head section of Page1.php.

how to open .mat file without using MATLAB?

A .mat-file is a compressed binary file. It is not possible to open it with a text editor (except you have a special plugin as Dennis Jaheruddin says). Otherwise you will have to convert it into a text file (csv for example) with a script. This could be done by python for example: Read .mat files in Python.

Retrieving parameters from a URL

I know this is a bit late but since I found myself on here today, I thought that this might be a useful answer for others.

import urlparse
url = 'http://example.com/?q=abc&p=123'
parsed = urlparse.urlparse(url)
params = urlparse.parse_qsl(parsed.query)
for x,y in params:
    print "Parameter = "+x,"Value = "+y

With parse_qsl(), "Data are returned as a list of name, value pairs."

Polymorphism vs Overriding vs Overloading

overloading is when you define 2 methods with the same name but different parameters

overriding is where you change the behavior of the base class via a function with the same name in a subclass.

So Polymorphism is related to overriding but not really overloading.

However if someone gave me a simple answer of "overriding" for the question "What is polymorphism?" I would ask for further explanation.

What is the difference between Unidirectional and Bidirectional JPA and Hibernate associations?

The main differenece is that bidirectional relationship provides navigational access in both directions, so that you can access the other side without explicit queries. Also it allows you to apply cascading options to both directions.

Note that navigational access is not always good, especially for "one-to-very-many" and "many-to-very-many" relationships. Imagine a Group that contains thousands of Users:

  • How would you access them? With so many Users, you usually need to apply some filtering and/or pagination, so that you need to execute a query anyway (unless you use collection filtering, which looks like a hack for me). Some developers may tend to apply filtering in memory in such cases, which is obviously not good for performance. Note that having such a relationship can encourage this kind of developers to use it without considering performance implications.

  • How would you add new Users to the Group? Fortunately, Hibernate looks at the owning side of relationship when persisting it, so you can only set User.group. However, if you want to keep objects in memory consistent, you also need to add User to Group.users. But it would make Hibernate to fetch all elements of Group.users from the database!

So, I can't agree with the recommendation from the Best Practices. You need to design bidirectional relationships carefully, considering use cases (do you need navigational access in both directions?) and possible performance implications.

How to remove a key from Hash and get the remaining hash in Ruby/Rails?

There are many ways to remove a key from a hash and get the remaining hash in Ruby.

  1. .slice => It will return selected keys and not delete them from the original hash. Use slice! if you want to remove the keys permanently else use simple slice.

    2.2.2 :074 > hash = {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}
    2.2.2 :075 > hash.slice("one","two")
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2}
    2.2.2 :076 > hash
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}

  2. .delete => It will delete the selected keys from the original hash(it can accept only one key and not more than one).

    2.2.2 :094 > hash = {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}
    2.2.2 :095 > hash.delete("one")
     => 1
    2.2.2 :096 > hash
     => {"two"=>2, "three"=>3}

  3. .except => It will return the remaining keys but not delete anything from the original hash. Use except! if you want to remove the keys permanently else use simple except.

    2.2.2 :097 > hash = {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}
    2.2.2 :098 > hash.except("one","two")
     => {"three"=>3}
    2.2.2 :099 > hash
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}

  4. .delete_if => In case you need to remove a key based on a value. It will obviously remove the matching keys from the original hash.

    2.2.2 :115 > hash = {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3, "one_again"=>1}
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3, "one_again"=>1}
    2.2.2 :116 > value = 1
     => 1
    2.2.2 :117 > hash.delete_if { |k,v| v == value }
     => {"two"=>2, "three"=>3}
    2.2.2 :118 > hash
     => {"two"=>2, "three"=>3}

  5. .compact => It is used to remove all nil values from the hash. Use compact! if you want to remove the nil values permanently else use simple compact.

    2.2.2 :119 > hash = {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3, "nothing"=>nil, "no_value"=>nil}
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3, "nothing"=>nil, "no_value"=>nil}
    2.2.2 :120 > hash.compact
     => {"one"=>1, "two"=>2, "three"=>3}

Results based on Ruby 2.2.2.

What is an idempotent operation?

Idempotent Operations: Operations that have no side-effects if executed multiple times.
Example: An operation that retrieves values from a data resource and say, prints it

Non-Idempotent Operations: Operations that would cause some harm if executed multiple times. (As they change some values or states)
Example: An operation that withdraws from a bank account

Turn Pandas Multi-Index into column

This doesn't really apply to your case but could be helpful for others (like myself 5 minutes ago) to know. If one's multindex have the same name like this:

                         value
Trial        Trial
    1              0        13
                   1         3
                   2         4
    2              0       NaN
                   1        12
    3              0        34

df.reset_index(inplace=True) will fail, cause the columns that are created cannot have the same names.

So then you need to rename the multindex with df.index = df.index.set_names(['Trial', 'measurement']) to get:

                           value
Trial    measurement

    1              0        13
    1              1         3
    1              2         4
    2              0       NaN
    2              1        12
    3              0        34

And then df.reset_index(inplace=True) will work like a charm.

I encountered this problem after grouping by year and month on a datetime-column(not index) called live_date, which meant that both year and month were named live_date.

How do I push amended commit to the remote Git repository?

Here is a very simple and clean way to push your changes after you have already made a commit --amend:

git reset --soft HEAD^
git stash
git push -f origin master
git stash pop
git commit -a
git push origin master

Which does the following:

  • Reset branch head to parent commit.
  • Stash this last commit.
  • Force push to remote. The remote now doesn't have the last commit.
  • Pop your stash.
  • Commit cleanly.
  • Push to remote.

Remember to change "origin" and "master" if applying this to a different branch or remote.

        var scrollpos = sessionStorage.getItem('scrollpos');
        if (scrollpos) {
            window.scrollTo(0, scrollpos);
            sessionStorage.removeItem('scrollpos');
        }
    });

    window.addEventListener("beforeunload", function (e) {
        sessionStorage.setItem('scrollpos', window.scrollY);
    });
</script>

PHP float with 2 decimal places: .00

You can show float numbers

  • with a certain number of decimals
  • with a certain format (localised)

i.e.

$myNonFormatedFloat = 5678.9

$myGermanNumber = number_format($myNonFormatedFloat, 2, ',', '.'); // -> 5.678,90

$myAngloSaxonianNumber = number_format($myNonFormatedFloat, 2, '.', ','); // -> 5,678.90

Note that, the

1st argument is the float number you would like to format

2nd argument is the number of decimals

3rd argument is the character used to visually separate the decimals

4th argument is the character used to visually separate thousands

Filter data.frame rows by a logical condition

we can use data.table library

  library(data.table)
  expr <- data.table(expr)
  expr[cell_type == "hesc"]
  expr[cell_type %in% c("hesc","fibroblast")]

or filter using %like% operator for pattern matching

 expr[cell_type %like% "hesc"|cell_type %like% "fibroblast"]

What is the reason for the error message "System cannot find the path specified"?

There is not only 1 %SystemRoot%\System32 on Windows x64. There are 2 such directories.

The real %SystemRoot%\System32 directory is for 64-bit applications. This directory contains a 64-bit cmd.exe.

But there is also %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64 for 32-bit applications. This directory is used if a 32-bit application accesses %SystemRoot%\System32. It contains a 32-bit cmd.exe.

32-bit applications can access %SystemRoot%\System32 for 64-bit applications by using the alias %SystemRoot%\Sysnative in path.

For more details see the Microsoft documentation about File System Redirector.

So the subdirectory run was created either in %SystemRoot%\System32 for 64-bit applications and 32-bit cmd is run for which this directory does not exist because there is no subdirectory run in %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64 which is %SystemRoot%\System32 for 32-bit cmd.exe or the subdirectory run was created in %SystemRoot%\System32 for 32-bit applications and 64-bit cmd is run for which this directory does not exist because there is no subdirectory run in %SystemRoot%\System32 as this subdirectory exists only in %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64.

The following code could be used at top of the batch file in case of subdirectory run is in %SystemRoot%\System32 for 64-bit applications:

@echo off
set "SystemPath=%SystemRoot%\System32"
if not "%ProgramFiles(x86)%" == "" if exist %SystemRoot%\Sysnative\* set "SystemPath=%SystemRoot%\Sysnative"

Every console application in System32\run directory must be executed with %SystemPath% in the batch file, for example %SystemPath%\run\YourApp.exe.

How it works?

There is no environment variable ProgramFiles(x86) on Windows x86 and therefore there is really only one %SystemRoot%\System32 as defined at top.

But there is defined the environment variable ProgramFiles(x86) with a value on Windows x64. So it is additionally checked on Windows x64 if there are files in %SystemRoot%\Sysnative. In this case the batch file is processed currently by 32-bit cmd.exe and only in this case %SystemRoot%\Sysnative needs to be used at all. Otherwise %SystemRoot%\System32 can be used also on Windows x64 as when the batch file is processed by 64-bit cmd.exe, this is the directory containing the 64-bit console applications (and the subdirectory run).

Note: %SystemRoot%\Sysnative is not a directory! It is not possible to cd to %SystemRoot%\Sysnative or use if exist %SystemRoot%\Sysnative or if exist %SystemRoot%\Sysnative\. It is a special alias existing only for 32-bit executables and therefore it is necessary to check if one or more files exist on using this path by using if exist %SystemRoot%\Sysnative\cmd.exe or more general if exist %SystemRoot%\Sysnative\*.

can you add HTTPS functionality to a python flask web server?

Deploy Flask on a real web server, rather than with the built-in (development) server.

See the Deployment Options chapter of the Flask documentation. Servers like Nginx and Apache both can handle setting up HTTPS servers rather than HTTP servers for your site.

The standalone WSGI servers listed would typically be deployed behind Nginx and Apache in a proxy-forwarding configuration, where the front-end server handles the SSL encryption for you still.

and you have to check it ,that your App. is working without any failures or not, and if everything is ok, you can commit your changes.

SQL server stored procedure return a table

I do this frequently using Table Types to ensure more consistency and simplify code. You can't technically return "a table", but you can return a result set and using INSERT INTO .. EXEC ... syntax, you can clearly call a PROC and store the results into a table type. In the following example I'm actually passing a table into a PROC along with another param I need to add logic, then I'm effectively "returning a table" and can then work with that as a table variable.

/****** Check if my table type and/or proc exists and drop them ******/
IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.objects WHERE type = 'P' AND name = 'returnTableTypeData')
DROP PROCEDURE returnTableTypeData
GO
IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.types WHERE is_table_type = 1 AND name = 'myTableType')
DROP TYPE myTableType
GO

/****** Create the type that I'll pass into the proc and return from it ******/
CREATE TYPE [dbo].[myTableType] AS TABLE(
    [someInt] [int] NULL,
    [somenVarChar] [nvarchar](100) NULL
)
GO

CREATE PROC returnTableTypeData
    @someInputInt INT,
    @myInputTable myTableType READONLY --Must be readonly because
AS
BEGIN

    --Return the subset of data consistent with the type
    SELECT
        *
    FROM
        @myInputTable
    WHERE
        someInt < @someInputInt

END
GO

DECLARE @myInputTableOrig myTableType
DECLARE @myUpdatedTable myTableType

INSERT INTO @myInputTableOrig ( someInt,somenVarChar )
VALUES ( 0, N'Value 0' ), ( 1, N'Value 1' ), ( 2, N'Value 2' )

INSERT INTO @myUpdatedTable EXEC returnTableTypeData @someInputInt=1, @myInputTable=@myInputTableOrig

Refused to load the font 'data:font/woff.....'it violates the following Content Security Policy directive: "default-src 'self'". Note that 'font-src'

From personal experience, it is always a best, first step to run your site in Incognito (Chrome), Private Browsing (Firefox), and InPrivate (IE11 && Edge) to remove the interference of add-ons/extensions. These can still interfere with testing in this mode if they are enabled explicitly in their settings. However, it is an easy first step to troubleshooting an issue.

The reason I am here, was due to Web of Trust (WoT) adding content to my page, and my page having had very strict Content Security Policy:

Header set Content-Security-Policy "default-src 'none'; font-src 'self' data:; style-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline' data:; img-src 'self' data:; script-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline'; connect-src 'self';"

This caused many errors. I was looking more for an answer on how to tell the extension to not try and run on this site programatically. This way when people have extensions, they just won't run on my site. I imagine if this were possible, ad blockers would have been banned on sites long ago. So my research is a bit naive. Hope this helps anyone else trying to diagnose an issue that is not specifically tied to the handful of mentioned extensions in other answers.

How can I access localhost from another computer in the same network?

You need to find what your local network's IP of that computer is. Then other people can access to your site by that IP.

You can find your local network's IP by go to Command Prompt or press Windows + R then type in ipconfig. It will give out some information and your local IP should look like 192.168.1.x.

Can you blur the content beneath/behind a div?

If you want to enable unblur, you cannot just add the blur CSS to the body, you need to blur each visible child one level directly under the body and then remove the CSS to unblur. The reason is because of the "Cascade" in CSS, you cannot undo the cascading of the CSS blur effect for a child of the body. Also, to blur the body's background image you need to use the pseudo element :before

How do I install Python OpenCV through Conda?

It doesn't seem like the page you linked includes opencv any more. (Funny, I do recall it being included at a previous point as well.)

In any case, installation of OpenCV into Anaconda, although unavailable through conda, is pretty trivial. You just need to download one file.

  1. Download OpenCV from https://opencv.org/releases/ and extract
  2. From the extracted folder, copy the file from the extracted directory: opencv/build/python/2.7/(either x86 or x64, depending on your Anaconda version)/cv2.pyd to your Anaconda site-packages directory, e.g., C:\Anaconda\Lib\site-packages
  3. To get FFmpeg within opencv to work, you'll have to add the directory that FFmpeg is located in to the path (e.g., opencv/sources/3rdparty/ffmpeg). Then you'll have to find the DLL file in that folder (e.g., opencv_ffmpeg_64.dll) and copy or rename it to a filename that includes the opencv version you are installing, (e.g., opencv_ffmpeg249_64) for 2.4.9.

Now at the Python prompt you should be able to type "import cv2"...to verify that it works, type "print cv2.__version__", and it should print out the OpenCV version you downloaded.

How to make a browser display a "save as dialog" so the user can save the content of a string to a file on his system?

There is a new spec called the Native File System API that allows you to do this properly like this:

const result = await window.chooseFileSystemEntries({ type: "save-file" });

There is a demo here, but I believe it is using an origin trial so it may not work in your own website unless you sign up or enable a config flag, and it obviously only works in Chrome. If you're making an Electron app this might be an option though.

Swift do-try-catch syntax

enum NumberError: Error {
  case NegativeNumber(number: Int)
  case ZeroNumber
  case OddNumber(number: Int)
}

extension NumberError: CustomStringConvertible {
         var description: String {
         switch self {
             case .NegativeNumber(let number):
                 return "Negative number \(number) is Passed."
             case .OddNumber(let number):
                return "Odd number \(number) is Passed."
             case .ZeroNumber:
                return "Zero is Passed."
      }
   }
}

 func validateEvenNumber(_ number: Int) throws ->Int {
     if number == 0 {
        throw NumberError.ZeroNumber
     } else if number < 0 {
        throw NumberError.NegativeNumber(number: number)
     } else if number % 2 == 1 {
         throw NumberError.OddNumber(number: number)
     }
    return number
}

Now Validate Number :

 do {
     let number = try validateEvenNumber(0)
     print("Valid Even Number: \(number)")
  } catch let error as NumberError {
     print(error.description)
  }

How to tell Maven to disregard SSL errors (and trusting all certs)?

You can disable SSL certificate checking by adding one or more of these command line parameters:

  • -Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.insecure=true - enable use of relaxed SSL check for user generated certificates.
  • -Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.allowall=true - enable match of the server's X.509 certificate with hostname. If disabled, a browser like check will be used.
  • -Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.ignore.validity.dates=true - ignore issues with certificate dates.

Official documentation: http://maven.apache.org/wagon/wagon-providers/wagon-http/

Here's the oneliner for an easy copy-and-paste:

-Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.insecure=true -Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.allowall=true -Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.ignore.validity.dates=true

Ajay Gautam suggested that you could also add the above to the ~/.mavenrc file as not to have to specify it every time at command line:

$ cat ~/.mavenrc
MAVEN_OPTS="-Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.insecure=true -Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.allowall=true -Dmaven.wagon.http.ssl.ignore.validity.dates=true"

Mailto links do nothing in Chrome but work in Firefox?

The usual <a href="mailto:[email protected]"></a> should work, but remember you must have a default email program set on your computer. For ex, I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 and the default email is thunderbird, which works fine.

How can I read input from the console using the Scanner class in Java?

Here is the complete class which performs the required operation:

import java.util.Scanner;

public class App {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
        final int valid = 6;

        Scanner one = new Scanner(System.in);
        System.out.println("Enter your username: ");
        String s = one.nextLine();

        if (s.length() < valid) {
            System.out.println("Enter a valid username");
            System.out.println(
                "User name must contain " + valid + " characters");
            System.out.println("Enter again: ");
            s = one.nextLine();
        }

        System.out.println("Username accepted: " + s);

        Scanner two = new Scanner(System.in);
        System.out.println("Enter your age: ");
        int a = two.nextInt();
        System.out.println("Age accepted: " + a);

        Scanner three = new Scanner(System.in);
        System.out.println("Enter your sex: ");
        String sex = three.nextLine();
        System.out.println("Sex accepted: " + sex);
    }
}

How to read strings from a Scanner in a Java console application?

You are entering a null value to nextInt, it will fail if you give a null value...

i have added a null check to the piece of code

Try this code:

import java.util.Scanner;
class MyClass
{
     public static void main(String args[]){

                Scanner scanner = new Scanner(System.in);
                int eid,sid;
                String ename;
                System.out.println("Enter Employeeid:");
                     eid=(scanner.nextInt());
                System.out.println("Enter EmployeeName:");
                     ename=(scanner.next());
                System.out.println("Enter SupervisiorId:");
                    if(scanner.nextLine()!=null&&scanner.nextLine()!=""){//null check
                     sid=scanner.nextInt();
                     }//null check
        }
}

How to add dividers and spaces between items in RecyclerView?

Here's how I would do it in Kotlin, for simple space between Items with default size of 10dp:

class SimpleItemDecoration(context: Context, space: Int = 10) : RecyclerView.ItemDecoration() {

    private val spaceInDp = ConvertUtil.dpToPx(context, space)

    override fun getItemOffsets(outRect: Rect, view: View, parent: RecyclerView, state: RecyclerView.State) {

        outRect.left = spaceInDp
        outRect.right = spaceInDp
        outRect.bottom = spaceInDp
        // Add top margin only for the first item to avoid double space between items
        if (parent.getChildAdapterPosition(view) == 0) {
            outRect.top = spaceInDp
        }
    }
}

and here is the dpToPx method:

fun dpToPx(context: Context, dp: Int): Int {
        return (dp * context.resources.displayMetrics.density).toInt()
    }

How to validate phone number in laravel 5.2?

One possible solution would to use regex.

'phone' => 'required|regex:/(01)[0-9]{9}/'

This will check the input starts with 01 and is followed by 9 numbers. By using regex you don't need the numeric or size validation rules.

If you want to reuse this validation method else where, it would be a good idea to create your own validation rule for validating phone numbers.

Docs: Custom Validation

In your AppServiceProvider's boot method:

Validator::extend('phone_number', function($attribute, $value, $parameters)
{
    return substr($value, 0, 2) == '01';
});

This will allow you to use the phone_number validation rule anywhere in your application, so your form validation could be:

'phone' => 'required|numeric|phone_number|size:11'

In your validator extension you could also check if the $value is numeric and 11 characters long.

What is the Maximum Size that an Array can hold?

This answer is about .NET 4.5

According to MSDN, the index for array of bytes cannot be greater than 2147483591. For .NET prior to 4.5 it also was a memory limit for an array. In .NET 4.5 this maximum is the same, but for other types it can be up to 2146435071.

This is the code for illustration:

    static void Main(string[] args)
    {
        // -----------------------------------------------
        // Pre .NET 4.5 or gcAllowVeryLargeObjects unset
        const int twoGig = 2147483591; // magic number from .NET

        var type = typeof(int); // type to use
        var size = Marshal.SizeOf(type); // type size
        var num = twoGig / size; // max element count

        var arr20 = Array.CreateInstance(type, num);
        var arr21 = new byte[num];

        // -----------------------------------------------
        // .NET 4.5 with x64 and gcAllowVeryLargeObjects set
        var arr451 = new byte[2147483591];
        var arr452 = Array.CreateInstance(typeof(int), 2146435071);
        var arr453 = new byte[2146435071]; // another magic number

        return;
    }

Is there a simple way to convert C++ enum to string?

That's pretty much the only way it can be done (an array of string could work also).

The problem is, once a C program is compiled, the binary value of the enum is all that is used, and the name is gone.

Swap DIV position with CSS only

Someone linked me this: What is the best way to move an element that's on the top to the bottom in Responsive design.

The solution in that worked perfectly. Though it doesn’t support old IE, that doesn’t matter for me, since I’m using responsive design for mobile. And it works for most mobile browsers.

Basically, I had this:

@media (max-width: 30em) {
  .container {
    display: -webkit-box;
    display: -moz-box;
    display: -ms-flexbox;
    display: -webkit-flex;
    display: flex;
    -webkit-box-orient: vertical;
    -moz-box-orient: vertical;
    -webkit-flex-direction: column;
    -ms-flex-direction: column;
    flex-direction: column;
    /* optional */
    -webkit-box-align: start;
    -moz-box-align: start;
    -ms-flex-align: start;
    -webkit-align-items: flex-start;
    align-items: flex-start;
  }

  .container .first_div {
    -webkit-box-ordinal-group: 2;
    -moz-box-ordinal-group: 2;
    -ms-flex-order: 2;
    -webkit-order: 2;
    order: 2;
  }

  .container .second_div {
    -webkit-box-ordinal-group: 1;
    -moz-box-ordinal-group: 1;
    -ms-flex-order: 1;
    -webkit-order: 1;
    order: 1;
  }
}

This worked better than floats for me, because I needed them stacked on top of each other and I had about five different divs that I had to swap around the position of.

Consider marking event handler as 'passive' to make the page more responsive

Also encounter this in select2 dropdown plugin in Laravel. Changing the value as suggested by Alfred Wallace from

this.element.addEventListener(t, e, !1)

to

this.element.addEventListener(t, e, { passive: true} )

solves the issue. Why he has a down vote, I don't know but it works for me.

Virtualhost For Wildcard Subdomain and Static Subdomain

<VirtualHost *:80>

Should work. The first entry will become the default if you don't get an explicit match. So if you had app.otherexample.com point to it, it would be caught be app1.example.com.

Is the order of elements in a JSON list preserved?

Practically speaking, if the keys were of type NaN, the browser will not change the order.

The following script will output "One", "Two", "Three":

var foo={"3":"Three", "1":"One", "2":"Two"};
for(bar in foo) {
    alert(foo[bar]);
}

Whereas the following script will output "Three", "One", "Two":

var foo={"@3":"Three", "@1":"One", "@2":"Two"};
for(bar in foo) {
    alert(foo[bar]);
}

How to break nested loops in JavaScript?

You need to name your outer loop and break that loop, rather than your inner loop - like this.

outer_loop:
for(i=0;i<5;i++) {
    for(j=i+1;j<5;j++) {
        break outer_loop;
    }
    alert(1);
}

Font Awesome & Unicode

Add font weight 900..its working for me

font-weight: 900;

Remove element of a regular array

First step
You need to convert the array into a list, you could write an extension method like this

// Convert An array of string to a list of string
public static List<string> ConnvertArrayToList(this string [] array) {

    // DECLARE a list of string and add all element of the array into it

    List<string> myList = new List<string>();
    foreach( string s in array){
        myList.Add(s);
    }
    return myList;
}

Second step
Write an extension method to convert back the list into an array

// convert a list of string to an array
public static string[] ConvertListToArray(this List<string> list) {

    string[] array = new string[list.Capacity];
    array = list.Select(i => i.ToString()).ToArray();
    return array;
}

Last steps
Write your final method, but remember to remove the element at index before converting back to an array like the code show

public static string[] removeAt(string[] array, int index) {

    List<string> myList = array.ConnvertArrayToList();
    myList.RemoveAt(index);
    return myList.ConvertListToArray();
}

examples codes could be find on my blog, keep tracking.

Two Divs next to each other, that then stack with responsive change

With a mediaquery based on a min-width you could achieve something like http://jsbin.com/aruyiq/1/edit

CSS

.wrapper {
  border : 2px dotted #ccc; padding: 2px;
}

.wrapper div {
   width: 100%;
   min-height: 200px;
   padding: 10px;
   -webkit-box-sizing: border-box;
   -moz-box-sizing: border-box;
   box-sizing: border-box;
}
#one { background-color: gray; }
#two { background-color: white; }

@media screen and (min-width: 600px) {
   .wrapper {
      height: auto; overflow: hidden; // clearing
   }
   #one { width: 200px; float: left; }
   #two { margin-left: 200px; }
}

In my example the breakpoint is 600px but you could adapt it to your needs.

For loop in Oracle SQL

You will certainly be able to do that using WITH clause, or use analytic functions available in Oracle SQL.

With some effort you'd be able to get anything out of them in terms of cycles as in ordinary procedural languages. Both approaches are pretty powerful compared to ordinary SQL.

http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_with_clause.htm

http://www.orafaq.com/node/55

It requires some effort though. Don't be afraid to post a concrete example.

Using simple pseudo table DUAL helps too.

how to implement a long click listener on a listview

or try this code:

listView.setOnItemLongClickListener(new AdapterView.OnItemLongClickListener() {

            public boolean onItemLongClick(AdapterView<?> arg0, View v,
                    int index, long arg3) {

    Toast.makeText(list.this,myList.getItemAtPosition(index).toString(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
                return false;
            }
});

Android: how do I check if activity is running?

You can use a static variable within the activity.

class MyActivity extends Activity {
     static boolean active = false;

      @Override
      public void onStart() {
         super.onStart();
         active = true;
      }

      @Override
      public void onStop() {
         super.onStop();
         active = false;
      }
}

The only gotcha is that if you use it in two activities that link to each other then onStop on the first is sometimes called after onStart in second. So both might be true briefly.

Depending on what you are trying to do (update the current activity from a service?). You could just register a static listener in the service in your activity onStart method then the correct listener will be available when your service wants to update the UI.

Make a link use POST instead of GET

You don't need JavaScript for this. Just wanted to make that clear, since as of the time this answer was posted, all of the answers to this question involve the use of JavaScript in some way or another.

You can do this rather easily with pure HTML and CSS by creating a form with hidden fields containing the data you want to submit, then styling the submit button of the form to look like a link.

For example:

_x000D_
_x000D_
.inline {_x000D_
  display: inline;_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
.link-button {_x000D_
  background: none;_x000D_
  border: none;_x000D_
  color: blue;_x000D_
  text-decoration: underline;_x000D_
  cursor: pointer;_x000D_
  font-size: 1em;_x000D_
  font-family: serif;_x000D_
}_x000D_
.link-button:focus {_x000D_
  outline: none;_x000D_
}_x000D_
.link-button:active {_x000D_
  color:red;_x000D_
}
_x000D_
<a href="some_page">This is a regular link</a>_x000D_
_x000D_
<form method="post" action="some_page" class="inline">_x000D_
  <input type="hidden" name="extra_submit_param" value="extra_submit_value">_x000D_
  <button type="submit" name="submit_param" value="submit_value" class="link-button">_x000D_
    This is a link that sends a POST request_x000D_
  </button>_x000D_
</form>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

The exact CSS you use may vary depending on how regular links on your site are styled.

How to get AIC from Conway–Maxwell-Poisson regression via COM-poisson package in R?

I figured out myself.

cmp calls ComputeBetasAndNuHat which returns a list which has objective as minusloglik

So I can change the function cmp to get this value.

How does one convert a grayscale image to RGB in OpenCV (Python)?

One you convert your image to gray-scale you cannot got back. You have gone from three channel to one, when you try to go back all three numbers will be the same. So the short answer is no you cannot go back. The reason your backtorgb function this throwing that error is because it needs to be in the format:

CvtColor(input, output, CV_GRAY2BGR)

OpenCV use BGR not RGB, so if you fix the ordering it should work, though your image will still be gray.

MS Access DB Engine (32-bit) with Office 64-bit

If both versions of Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 can't coexists, then your only solution is to complain to Microsoft, regarding loading 64 bits versions of this in your 32 bits app is impossible directly, what you can do is a service that runs in 64 bits that comunicates with another 32 bits service or your application via pipes or networks sockets, but it may require a significant effort.

Git - Ignore files during merge

Example:

  1. You have two branches: master, develop
  2. You created file in develop branch and want to ignore it while merging

Code:

git config --global merge.ours.driver true
git checkout master
echo "path/file_to_ignore merge=ours" >> .gitattributes
git merge develop

You can also ignore files with same extension

for example all files with .txt extension:

echo "*.txt merge=ours" >> .gitattributes

What's the difference between @JoinColumn and mappedBy when using a JPA @OneToMany association

JPA is a layered API, the different levels have their own annotations. The highest level is the (1) Entity level which describes persistent classes then you have the (2) relational database level which assume the entities are mapped to a relational database and (3) the java model.

Level 1 annotations: @Entity, @Id, @OneToOne, @OneToMany, @ManyToOne, @ManyToMany. You can introduce persistency in your application using these high level annotations alone. But then you have to create your database according to the assumptions JPA makes. These annotations specify the entity/relationship model.

Level 2 annotations: @Table, @Column, @JoinColumn, ... Influence the mapping from entities/properties to the relational database tables/columns if you are not satisfied with JPA's defaults or if you need to map to an existing database. These annotations can be seen as implementation annotations, they specify how the mapping should be done.

In my opinion it is best to stick as much as possible to the high level annotations and then introduce the lower level annotations as needed.

To answer the questions: the @OneToMany/mappedBy is nicest because it only uses the annotations from the entity domain. The @oneToMany/@JoinColumn is also fine but it uses an implementation annotation where this is not strictly necessary.

Loop until a specific user input

Your code won't work because you haven't assigned anything to n before you first use it. Try this:

def oracle():
    n = None
    while n != 'Correct':
        # etc...

A more readable approach is to move the test until later and use a break:

def oracle():
    guess = 50

    while True:
        print 'Current number = {0}'.format(guess)
        n = raw_input("lower, higher or stop?: ")
        if n == 'stop':
            break
        # etc...

Also input in Python 2.x reads a line of input and then evaluates it. You want to use raw_input.

Note: In Python 3.x, raw_input has been renamed to input and the old input method no longer exists.

Using 'starts with' selector on individual class names

While the top answer here is a workaround for the asker's particular case, if you're looking for a solution to actually using 'starts with' on individual class names:

You can use this custom jQuery selector, which I call :acp() for "A Class Prefix." Code is at the bottom of this post.

var test = $('div:acp("starting_text")');

This will select any and all <div> elements that have at least one class name beginning with the given string ("starting_text" in this example), regardless of whether that class is at the beginning or elsewhere in the class attribute strings.

<div id="1" class="apple orange lemon" />
<div id="2" class="orange applelemon banana" />
<div id="3" class="orange lemon apple" />
<div id="4" class="lemon orangeapple" />
<div id="5" class="lemon orange" />

var startsWithapp = $('div:acp("app")');

This will return elements 1, 2, and 3, but not 4 or 5.

Here's the declaration for the :acp custom selector, which you can put anywhere:

$(function(){
    $.expr[":"].acp = function(elem, index, m){
          var regString = '\\b' + m[3];
          var reg = new RegExp(regString, "g");
          return elem.className.match(reg);
    }
});

I made this because I do a lot of GreaseMonkey hacking of websites on which I have no backend control, so I often need to find elements with class names that have dynamic suffixes. It's been very useful.

SSL: error:0B080074:x509 certificate routines:X509_check_private_key:key values mismatch

If this happens and you are using Let's Encrypt / certbot, the reason is most likely that you used chain.pem instead of fullchain.pem.

It should be something like this:

ssl_certificate /etc/certbot/live/example.com/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/certbot/live/example.com/privkey.pem;

See certbot docs “Where are my certificates?”

SQL Server query to find all permissions/access for all users in a database

Here is my version, adapted from others. I spent 30 minutes just now trying to remember how I came up with this, and @Jeremy 's answer seems to be the core inspiration. I didn't want to update Jeremy's answer, just in case I introduced bugs, so I am posting my version of it here.

I suggest pairing the full script with some inspiration taken from Kenneth Fisher's T-SQL Tuesday: What Permissions Does a Specific User Have?: This will allow you to answer compliance/audit questions bottom-up, as opposed to top-down.

EXECUTE AS LOGIN = '<loginname>'

SELECT token.name AS GroupNames
FROM sys.login_token token
JOIN sys.server_principals grp
    ON token.sid = grp.sid
WHERE token.[type] = 'WINDOWS GROUP'
  AND grp.[type] = 'G'

REVERT

To understand what this covers, consider Contoso\DB_AdventureWorks_Accounting Windows AD Group with member Contoso\John.Doe. John.Doe authenticates to AdventureWorks via server_principal Contoso\DB_AdventureWorks_Logins Windows AD Group. If someone asks you, "What permissions does John.Doe have?", you cannot answer that question with just the below script. You need to then iterate through each row returned by the below script and join it to the above script. (You may also need to normalize for stale name values via looking up the SID in your Active Directory provider.)

Here is the script, without incorporating such reverse look-up logic.

Security Audit Report
1) List all access provisioned to a sql user or windows user/group directly
2) List all access provisioned to a sql user or windows user/group through a database or application role
3) List all access provisioned to the public role

Columns Returned:
UserName : SQL or Windows/Active Directory user account. This could also be an Active Directory group.
UserType : Value will be either 'SQL User' or 'Windows User'. This reflects the type of user defined for the
                  SQL Server user account.
PrinciaplUserName: if UserName is not blank, then UserName else DatabaseUserName
PrincipalType : Possible values are 'SQL User', 'Windows User', 'Database Role', 'Windows Group'
DatabaseUserName : Name of the associated user as defined in the database user account. The database user may not be the
                   same as the server user.
Role : The role name. This will be null if the associated permissions to the object are defined at directly
                   on the user account, otherwise this will be the name of the role that the user is a member of.
PermissionType : Type of permissions the user/role has on an object. Examples could include CONNECT, EXECUTE, SELECT
                   DELETE, INSERT, ALTER, CONTROL, TAKE OWNERSHIP, VIEW DEFINITION, etc.
                   This value may not be populated for all roles. Some built in roles have implicit permission
                   definitions.
PermissionState : Reflects the state of the permission type, examples could include GRANT, DENY, etc.
                   This value may not be populated for all roles. Some built in roles have implicit permission
                   definitions.
ObjectType : Type of object the user/role is assigned permissions on. Examples could include USER_TABLE,
                   SQL_SCALAR_FUNCTION, SQL_INLINE_TABLE_VALUED_FUNCTION, SQL_STORED_PROCEDURE, VIEW, etc.
                   This value may not be populated for all roles. Some built in roles have implicit permission
                   definitions.
ObjectName : Name of the object that the user/role is assigned permissions on.
                   This value may not be populated for all roles. Some built in roles have implicit permission
                   definitions.
ColumnName : Name of the column of the object that the user/role is assigned permissions on. This value
                   is only populated if the object is a table, view or a table value function.

How to add an image to the emulator gallery in android studio?

Workaround simple and quick. Upload file/photo on cloud (from outside the emulator) and download with browser on the emulator.

mysqli::query(): Couldn't fetch mysqli

Probably somewhere you have DBconnection->close(); and then some queries try to execute .

Hint: It's sometimes mistake to insert ...->close(); in __destruct() (because __destruct is event, after which there will be a need for execution of queries)

What is the "Temporary ASP.NET Files" folder for?

These are what's known as Shadow Copy Folders.

Simplistically....and I really mean it:

When ASP.NET runs your app for the first time, it copies any assemblies found in the /bin folder, copies any source code files (found for example in the App_Code folder) and parses your aspx, ascx files to c# source files. ASP.NET then builds/compiles all this code into a runnable application.

One advantage of doing this is that it prevents the possibility of .NET assembly DLL's #(in the /bin folder) becoming locked by the ASP.NET worker process and thus not updatable.

ASP.NET watches for file changes in your website and will if necessary begin the whole process all over again.

Theoretically the folder shouldn't need any maintenance, but from time to time, and only very rarely you may need to delete contents. That said, I work for a hosting company, we run up to 1200 sites per shared server and I haven't had to touch this folder on any of the 250 or so machines for years.

This is outlined in the MSDN article Understanding ASP.NET Dynamic Compilation

How to auto generate migrations with Sequelize CLI from Sequelize models?

It's 2020 and many of these answers no longer apply to the Sequelize v4/v5/v6 ecosystem.

The one good answer says to use sequelize-auto-migrations, but probably is not prescriptive enough to use in your project. So here's a bit more color...

Setup

My team uses a fork of sequelize-auto-migrations because the original repo is has not been merged a few critical PRs. #56 #57 #58 #59

$ yarn add github:scimonster/sequelize-auto-migrations#a063aa6535a3f580623581bf866cef2d609531ba

Edit package.json:

"scripts": {
  ...
  "db:makemigrations": "./node_modules/sequelize-auto-migrations/bin/makemigration.js",
  ...
}

Process

Note: Make sure you’re using git (or some source control) and database backups so that you can undo these changes if something goes really bad.

  1. Delete all old migrations if any exist.
  2. Turn off .sync()
  3. Create a mega-migration that migrates everything in your current models (yarn db:makemigrations --name "mega-migration").
  4. Commit your 01-mega-migration.js and the _current.json that is generated.
  5. if you've previously run .sync() or hand-written migrations, you need to “Fake” that mega-migration by inserting the name of it into your SequelizeMeta table. INSERT INTO SequelizeMeta Values ('01-mega-migration.js').
  6. Now you should be able to use this as normal…
  7. Make changes to your models (add/remove columns, change constraints)
  8. Run $ yarn db:makemigrations --name whatever
  9. Commit your 02-whatever.js migration and the changes to _current.json, and _current.bak.json.
  10. Run your migration through the normal sequelize-cli: $ yarn sequelize db:migrate.
  11. Repeat 7-10 as necessary

Known Gotchas

  1. Renaming a column will turn into a pair of removeColumn and addColumn. This will lose data in production. You will need to modify the up and down actions to use renameColumn instead.

For those who confused how to use renameColumn, the snippet would look like this. (switch "column_name_before" and "column_name_after" for the rollbackCommands)

{
    fn: "renameColumn",
    params: [
        "table_name",
        "column_name_before",
        "column_name_after",
        {
            transaction: transaction
        }
    ]
}
  1. If you have a lot of migrations, the down action may not perfectly remove items in an order consistent way.

  2. The maintainer of this library does not actively check it. So if it doesn't work for you out of the box, you will need to find a different community fork or another solution.

How to style the parent element when hovering a child element?

Another, simpler approach (to an old question)..
would be to place elements as siblings and use:

Adjacent Sibling Selector (+) or General Sibling Selector (~)

<div id="parent">
  <!-- control should come before the target... think "cascading" ! -->
  <button id="control">Hover Me!</button>
  <div id="target">I'm hovered too!</div>
</div>
#parent {
  position: relative;
  height: 100px;
}

/* Move button control to bottom. */
#control {
  position: absolute;
  bottom: 0;
}

#control:hover ~ #target {
  background: red;
}

Questions every good Java/Java EE Developer should be able to answer?

Many questions and interviews are available at http://www.techinterviews.com/interview-questions/java and I don't really see value in copy / pasting a selection of them.

No, it's up to you to create your own compilation of things you think are important. Personally, I proceed always in two steps: first a few questions to get a basic idea of the experience and skills, then a problem solving situation. I'm indeed not convinced that being able to answer any known questions makes you a good or bad unknown problems solver. So, I prefer to ask people to solve a given problem, to give them some requirements, and ask them to write code (but not on paper). I give them some time to come back to me and check how they did it, their coding style, how they used the suggested APIs, etc.

That all being said, my favorite question is "what don't you like about Java?" (in the spirit of this one). It is really a excellent question, it gives you an immediate feedback on how much a candidate has used Java and explored its API and if he just religious about it or not (as the OP wrote).

Update: As suggested by CPerkins, a better wording for the question suggested above might be "What would you most like to see changed in Java?". And indeed, I prefer this way.

What's the fastest algorithm for sorting a linked list?

You can copy it into an array and then sort it.

  • Copying into array O(n),

  • sorting O(nlgn) (if you use a fast algorithm like merge sort ),

  • copying back to linked list O(n) if necessary,

so it is gonna be O(nlgn).

note that if you do not know the number of elements in the linked list you won't know the size of array. If you are coding in java you can use an Arraylist for example.

Apache Tomcat :java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused

There is one more explanation for this Connection Refused problem, that I missed from answers above. In my case I had thread running (quartz scheduler) started from context listener (in contextInitialized), never to be stopped (like in contextDestroyed).

This in turn caused the server port associated to be closed, where as the container kept on running (hence: connection refused on the server port).

I fixed it stopping quartz in contextDestroyed and I didn't experience this issue ever since.

See here for similar issues: Tomcat doesn't stop. How can I debug this?

Get the full URL in PHP

Here is my solution - code is inspired by Tracy Debugger. It was changed for support different server ports. You can get full current URL including $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] or just the basic server URL. Check my function:

function getCurrentUrl($full = true) {
    if (isset($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'])) {
        $parse = parse_url(
            (isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && strcasecmp($_SERVER['HTTPS'], 'off') ? 'https://' : 'http://') .
            (isset($_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']) ? $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] : (isset($_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']) ? $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] : '')) . (($full) ? $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] : null)
        );
        $parse['port'] = $_SERVER["SERVER_PORT"]; // Setup protocol for sure (80 is default)
        return http_build_url('', $parse);
    }
}

Here is test code:

// Follow $_SERVER variables was set only for test
$_SERVER['HTTPS'] = 'off'; // on
$_SERVER['SERVER_PORT'] = '9999'; // Setup
$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] = 'some.crazy.server.5.name:8088'; // Port is optional there
$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] = '/150/tail/single/normal?get=param';

echo getCurrentUrl();
// http://some.crazy.server.5.name:9999/150/tail/single/normal?get=param

echo getCurrentUrl(false);
// http://some.crazy.server.5.name:9999/

How do you performance test JavaScript code?

I think JavaScript performance (time) testing is quite enough. I found a very handy article about JavaScript performance testing here.
