Programs & Examples On #Sweeper

Sweepers are rails caching constructs that allow changes to models to sweep (clean/remove) cache contents, so keeping the cache entries in sync with data. Sweepers are a combination of observers and controller filters.

"No X11 DISPLAY variable" - what does it mean?

I have had the same issue in Ubuntu 14.04.01 when I tried to install JDK 8 and Netbeans if I launch the script inside a Byobu terminal (maybe with Screens happens the same).

Just exit Byobu and (in a graphical terminal) run the script.

How can I save a base64-encoded image to disk?

I think you are converting the data a bit more than you need to. Once you create the buffer with the proper encoding, you just need to write the buffer to the file.

var base64Data = req.rawBody.replace(/^data:image\/png;base64,/, "");

require("fs").writeFile("out.png", base64Data, 'base64', function(err) {
  console.log(err);
});

new Buffer(..., 'base64') will convert the input string to a Buffer, which is just an array of bytes, by interpreting the input as a base64 encoded string. Then you can just write that byte array to the file.

Update

As mentioned in the comments, req.rawBody is no longer a thing. If you are using express/connect then you should use the bodyParser() middleware and use req.body, and if you are doing this using standard Node then you need to aggregate the incoming data event Buffer objects and do this image data parsing in the end callback.

Making a WinForms TextBox behave like your browser's address bar

Actually GotFocus is the right event (message really) that you are interested in, since no matter how you get to the control you’ll get this even eventually. The question is when do you call SelectAll().

Try this:

public partial class Form1 : Form
{
    public Form1()
    {
        InitializeComponent();
        this.textBox1.GotFocus += new EventHandler(textBox1_GotFocus);
    }

    private delegate void SelectAllDelegate();
    private IAsyncResult _selectAllar = null; //So we can clean up afterwards.

    //Catch the input focus event
    void textBox1_GotFocus(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        //We could have gotten here many ways (including mouse click)
        //so there could be other messages queued up already that might change the selection.
        //Don't call SelectAll here, since it might get undone by things such as positioning the cursor.
        //Instead use BeginInvoke on the form to queue up a message
        //to select all the text after everything caused by the current event is processed.
        this._selectAllar = this.BeginInvoke(new SelectAllDelegate(this._SelectAll));
    }

    private void _SelectAll()
    {
        //Clean-up the BeginInvoke
        if (this._selectAllar != null)
        {
            this.EndInvoke(this._selectAllar);
        }
        //Now select everything.
        this.textBox1.SelectAll();
    }
}

How to backup a local Git repository?

You can backup the git repo with git-copy . git-copy saved new project as a bare repo, it means minimum storage cost.

git copy /path/to/project /backup/project.backup

Then you can restore your project with git clone

git clone /backup/project.backup project

How to place div in top right hand corner of page

Try css:

.topcorner{
    position:absolute;
    top:10px;
    right: 10px;
 }

you can play with the top and right properties.

If you want to float the div even when you scroll down, just change position:absolute; to position:fixed;.

Hope it helps.

fetch in git doesn't get all branches

This could be due to a face palm moment: if you switch between several clones it is easy to find yourself in the wrong source tree trying to pull a non-existent branch. It is easier when the clones have similar names, or the repos are distinct clones for the same project from each of multiple contributors. A new git clone would obviously seem to solve that "problem" when the real problem is losing focus or working context or both.

How to create a shared library with cmake?

I'm trying to learn how to do this myself, and it seems you can install the library like this:

cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 2.4.0)

project(mycustomlib)

# Find source files
file(GLOB SOURCES src/*.cpp)

# Include header files
include_directories(include)

# Create shared library
add_library(${PROJECT_NAME} SHARED ${SOURCES})

# Install library

# Install library headers
file(GLOB HEADERS include/*.h)

Difference between the annotations @GetMapping and @RequestMapping(method = RequestMethod.GET)

@GetMapping is a composed annotation that acts as a shortcut for @RequestMapping(method = RequestMethod.GET).

@GetMapping is the newer annotaion. It supports consumes

Consume options are :

consumes = "text/plain"
consumes = {"text/plain", "application/*"}

For Further details see: GetMapping Annotation

or read: request mapping variants

RequestMapping supports consumes as well

GetMapping we can apply only on method level and RequestMapping annotation we can apply on class level and as well as on method level

I indeed found an outdated version. So I reinstalled gulp with:

npm install gulp --global

That magically solved my problem.

How do I make a textbox that only accepts numbers?

I had created a Re-Usable Textbox Extension class for all sorts of validations and thought about sharing it.

All you need to do is raise a TextChange event and then call the Validate method. It looks like this:

private void tbxAmount_TextChanged(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
    tbxAmount.Validate(TextValidator.ValidationType.Amount);
}

Here is the extension class:

public static class TextValidator
{
    public enum ValidationType
    {
        Amount,
        Integer
    }

    /// <summary>
    /// Validate a textbox on text change.
    /// </summary>
    /// <param name="tbx"></param>
    /// <param name="validationType"></param>
    public static void Validate(this TextBox tbx, ValidationType validationType)
    {
        PerformValidation(tbx, validationType);
        tbx.Select(tbx.Text.Length, 0);
    }

    private static void PerformValidation(this TextBox tbx, ValidationType validationType)
    {
        char[] enteredString = tbx.Text.ToCharArray();
        switch (validationType)
        {
            case ValidationType.Amount:
                tbx.Text = AmountValidation(enteredString);
                break;

            case ValidationType.Integer:
                tbx.Text = IntegerValidation(enteredString);
                break;

            default:
                break;
        }

        tbx.SelectionStart = tbx.Text.Length;
    }

    private static string AmountValidation(char[] enteredString)
    {
        string actualString = string.Empty;
        int count = 0;
        foreach (char c in enteredString.AsEnumerable())
        {
            if (count >= 1 && c == '.')
            { actualString.Replace(c, ' '); actualString.Trim(); }
            else
            {
                if (Char.IsDigit(c))
                {
                    actualString = actualString + c;
                }

                if (c == '.')
                {
                    actualString = actualString + c; count++;
                }

                else
                {
                    actualString.Replace(c, ' ');
                    actualString.Trim();
                }
            }
        }
        return actualString;
    }

    private static string IntegerValidation(char[] enteredString)
    {
        string actualString = string.Empty;
        foreach (char c in enteredString.AsEnumerable())
        {
            if (Char.IsDigit(c))
            {
                actualString = actualString + c;
            }
            else
            {
                actualString.Replace(c, ' ');
                actualString.Trim();
            }
        }
        return actualString;
    }

Correct Way to Load Assembly, Find Class and Call Run() Method

Use an AppDomain

It is safer and more flexible to load the assembly into its own AppDomain first.

So instead of the answer given previously:

var asm = Assembly.LoadFile(@"C:\myDll.dll");
var type = asm.GetType("TestRunner");
var runnable = Activator.CreateInstance(type) as IRunnable;
if (runnable == null) throw new Exception("broke");
runnable.Run();

I would suggest the following (adapted from this answer to a related question):

var domain = AppDomain.CreateDomain("NewDomainName");
var t = typeof(TypeIWantToLoad);
var runnable = domain.CreateInstanceFromAndUnwrap(@"C:\myDll.dll", t.Name) as IRunnable;
if (runnable == null) throw new Exception("broke");
runnable.Run();

Now you can unload the assembly and have different security settings.

If you want even more flexibility and power for dynamic loading and unloading of assemblies, you should look at the Managed Add-ins Framework (i.e. the System.AddIn namespace). For more information, see this article on Add-ins and Extensibility on MSDN.

Get environment value in controller

It Doesn't work in Laravel 5.3+ if you want to try to access the value from the controller like below. It always returns null

<?php

    $value = env('MY_VALUE', 'default_value');

SOLUTION: Rather, you need to create a file in the configuration folder, say values.php and then write the code like below

File values.php

<?php

    return [

        'myvalue' => env('MY_VALUE',null),

        // Add other values as you wish

Then access the value in your controller with the following code

<?php

    $value = \Config::get('values.myvalue')

Where "values" is the filename followed by the key "myvalue".

After that I just changed to the proper version of python in the my IDE PyCharm.

Difference between acceptance test and functional test?

The relationship between the two: Acceptance test usually includes functional testing, but it may include additional tests. For example checking the labeling/documentation requirements.

Functional testing is when the product under test is placed into a test environment which can produce variety of stimulation (within the scope of the test) what the target environment typically produces or even beyond, while examining the response of the device under test.

For a physical product (not software) there are two major kind of Acceptance tests: design tests and manufacturing tests. Design tests typically use large number of product samples, which have passed manufacturing test. Different consumers may test the design different ways.

Acceptance tests are referred as verification when design is tested against product specification, and acceptance tests are referred as validation, when the product is placed in the consumer's real environment.

How to explicitly obtain post data in Spring MVC?

If you are using one of the built-in controller instances, then one of the parameters to your controller method will be the Request object. You can call request.getParameter("value1") to get the POST (or PUT) data value.

If you are using Spring MVC annotations, you can add an annotated parameter to your method's parameters:

@RequestMapping(value = "/someUrl")
public String someMethod(@RequestParam("value1") String valueOne) {
 //do stuff with valueOne variable here
}

I face the same problem and solved by adding the JAVA_HOME variable with updated version of java in my Ubuntu Machine(16.04). if you are using "Apache Maven 3.3.9" You need to upgrade your JAVA_HOME with java7 or more

Step to Do this

1-sudo vim /etc/environment

2-JAVA_HOME=JAVA Installation Directory (MyCase-/opt/dev/jdk1.7.0_45/)

3-Run echo $JAVA_HOME will give the JAVA_HOME set value

4-Now mvn -version will give the desired output

How can I create a self-signed cert for localhost?

Since this question is tagged with IIS and I can't find a good answer on how to get a trusted certificate I will give my 2 cents about it:

First use the command from @AuriRahimzadeh in PowerShell as administrator:

New-SelfSignedCertificate -DnsName "localhost" -CertStoreLocation "cert:\LocalMachine\My"

This is good but the certificate is not trusted and will result in the following error. It is because it is not installed in Trusted Root Certification Authorities.

enter image description here

Solve this by starting mmc.exe.

Then go to:

File -> Add or Remove Snap-ins -> Certificates -> Add -> Computer account -> Local computer. Click Finish.

Expand the Personal folder and you will see your localhost certificate:

enter image description here

Copy the certificate into Trusted Root Certification Authorities - Certificates folder.

The final step is to open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager or simply inetmgr.exe. From there go to your site, select Bindings... and Add... or Edit.... Set https and select your certificate from the drop down.

enter image description here

Your certificate is now trusted:

How to set order of repositories in Maven settings.xml

None of these answers were correct in my case.. the order seems dependent on the alphabetical ordering of the <id> tag, which is an arbitrary string. Hence this forced repo search order:

How to plot vectors in python using matplotlib

How about something like

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

V = np.array([[1,1], [-2,2], [4,-7]])
origin = np.array([[0, 0, 0],[0, 0, 0]]) # origin point

plt.quiver(*origin, V[:,0], V[:,1], color=['r','b','g'], scale=21)
plt.show()

enter image description here

Then to add up any two vectors and plot them to the same figure, do so before you call plt.show(). Something like:

plt.quiver(*origin, V[:,0], V[:,1], color=['r','b','g'], scale=21)
v12 = V[0] + V[1] # adding up the 1st (red) and 2nd (blue) vectors
plt.quiver(*origin, v12[0], v12[1])
plt.show()

enter image description here

NOTE: in Python2 use origin[0], origin[1] instead of *origin

How to retrieve current workspace using Jenkins Pipeline Groovy script?

How many spaces will Java String.trim() remove?

From the source code (decompiled) :

  public String trim()
  {
    int i = this.count;
    int j = 0;
    int k = this.offset;
    char[] arrayOfChar = this.value;
    while ((j < i) && (arrayOfChar[(k + j)] <= ' '))
      ++j;
    while ((j < i) && (arrayOfChar[(k + i - 1)] <= ' '))
      --i;
    return (((j > 0) || (i < this.count)) ? substring(j, i) : this);
  }

The two while that you can see mean all the characters whose unicode is below the space character's, at beginning and end, are removed.

CSS root directory

This problem that the "../" means step up (parent folder) link "../images/img.png" will not work because when you are using ajax like data passing to the web site from the server.

What you have to do is point the image location to root with "./" then the second folder (in this case the second folder is "images")

url("./images/img.png")

if you have folders like this

root -> content -> images

then you use url("./content/images/img.png"), remember your image will not visible in the editor window but when it passed to the browser using ajax it will display.

Picasso v/s Imageloader v/s Fresco vs Glide

Neither Glide nor Picasso is perfect. The way Glide loads an image to memory and do the caching is better than Picasso which let an image loaded far faster. In addition, it also helps preventing an app from popular OutOfMemoryError. GIF Animation loading is a killing feature provided by Glide. Anyway Picasso decodes an image with better quality than Glide.

Which one do I prefer? Although I use Picasso for such a very long time, I must admit that I now prefer Glide. But I would recommend you to change Bitmap Format to ARGB_8888 and let Glide cache both full-size image and resized one first. The rest would do your job great!

  • Method count of Picasso and Glide are at 840 and 2678 respectively.
  • Picasso (v2.5.1)'s size is around 118KB while Glide (v3.5.2)'s is around 430KB.
  • Glide creates cached images per size while Picasso saves the full image and process it, so on load it shows faster with Glide but uses more memory.
  • Glide use less memory by default with RGB_565.

+1 For Picasso Palette Helper.

There is a post that talk a lot about Picasso vs Glide post

How do you store Java objects in HttpSession?

You are not adding the object to the session, instead you are adding it to the request.
What you need is:

HttpSession session = request.getSession();
session.setAttribute("MySessionVariable", param);

In Servlets you have 4 scopes where you can store data.

  1. Application
  2. Session
  3. Request
  4. Page

R numbers from 1 to 100

Your mistake is looking for range, which gives you the range of a vector, for example:

range(c(10, -5, 100))

gives

 -5 100

Instead, look at the : operator to give sequences (with a step size of one):

1:100

or you can use the seq function to have a bit more control. For example,

##Step size of 2
seq(1, 100, by=2)

or

##length.out: desired length of the sequence
seq(1, 100, length.out=5)

Is there any way to start with a POST request using Selenium?

Selenium doesn't currently offer API for this, but there are several ways to initiate an HTTP request in your test. It just depends what language you are writing in.

In Java for example, it might look like this:

// setup the request
String request = "startpoint?stuff1=foo&stuff2=bar";
URL url = new URL(request);
HttpURLConnection connection = (HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection();
connection.setRequestMethod("POST");

// get a response - maybe "success" or "true", XML or JSON etc.
InputStream inputStream = connection.getInputStream();
BufferedReader bufferedReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(inputStream));
String line;
StringBuffer response = new StringBuffer();
while ((line = bufferedReader.readLine()) != null) {
    response.append(line);
    response.append('\r');
}
bufferedReader.close();

// continue with test
if (response.toString().equals("expected response"){
    // do selenium
}

Open window in JavaScript with HTML inserted

You can open a new popup window by following code:

var myWindow = window.open("", "newWindow", "width=500,height=700");
//window.open('url','name','specs');

Afterwards, you can add HTML using both myWindow.document.write(); or myWindow.document.body.innerHTML = "HTML";

What I will recommend is that first you create a new html file with any name. In this example I am using

newFile.html

And make sure to add all content in that file such as bootstrap cdn or jquery, means all the links and scripts. Then make a div with some id or use your body and give that a id. in this example I have given id="mainBody" to my newFile.html <body> tag

<body id="mainBody">

Then open this file using

<script>
var myWindow = window.open("newFile.html", "newWindow", "width=500,height=700");
</script>

And add whatever you want to add in your body tag. using following code

<script>
 var myWindow = window.open("newFile.html","newWindow","width=500,height=700");

   myWindow.onload = function(){
     let content = "<button class='btn btn-primary' onclick='window.print();'>Confirm</button>";
   myWindow.document.getElementById('mainBody').innerHTML = content;
    }

myWindow.window.close();
 </script>

it is as simple as that.

What is stability in sorting algorithms and why is it important?

Some more examples of the reason for wanting stable sorts. Databases are a common example. Take the case of a transaction data base than includes last|first name, date|time of purchase, item number, price. Say the data base is normally sorted by date|time. Then a query is made to make a sorted copy of the data base by last|first name, since a stable sort preserves the original order, even though the inquiry compare only involves last|first name, the transactions for each last|first name will be in data|time order.

A similar example is classic Excel, which limited sorts to 3 columns at a time. To sort 6 columns, a sort is done with the least significant 3 columns, followed by a sort with the most significant 3 columns.

A classic example of a stable radix sort is a card sorter, used to sort by a field of base 10 numeric columns. The cards are sorted from least significant digit to most significant digit. On each pass, a deck of cards is read and separated into 10 different bins according to the digit in that column. Then the 10 bins of cards are put back into the input hopper in order ("0" cards first, "9" cards last). Then another pass is done by the next column, until all columns are sorted. Actual card sorters have more than 10 bins since there are 12 zones on a card, a column can be blank, and there is a mis-read bin. To sort letters, 2 passes per column are needed, 1st pass for digit, 2nd pass for the 12 11 zone.

Later (1937) there were card collating (merging) machines that could merge two decks of cards by comparing fields. The input was two already sorted decks of cards, a master deck and an update deck. The collator merged the two decks into a a new mater bin and an archive bin, which was optionally used for master duplicates so that the new master bin would only have update cards in case of duplicates. This was probably the basis for the idea behind the original (bottom up) merge sort.

Input widths on Bootstrap 3

In Bootstrap 3

You can simply create a custom style:

.form-control-inline {
    min-width: 0;
    width: auto;
    display: inline;
}

Then add it to form controls like so:

<div class="controls">
    <select id="expirymonth" class="form-control form-control-inline">
        <option value="01">01 - January</option>
        <option value="02">02 - February</option>
        <option value="03">03 - March</option>
        <option value="12">12 - December</option>
    </select>
    <select id="expiryyear" class="form-control form-control-inline">
        <option value="2014">2014</option>
        <option value="2015">2015</option>
        <option value="2016">2016</option>
    </select>
</div>

This way you don't have to put extra markup for layout in your HTML.

Android Saving created bitmap to directory on sd card

You can also try this.

File file = new File(strDirectoy,imgname);
OutputStream fOut = new FileOutputStream(file);
bitmap.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.JPEG, 85, fOut);
fOut.flush();
fOut.close();
MediaStore.Images.Media.insertImage(getContentResolver(),file.getAbsolutePath(),file.getName(),file.getName());

Username and password in https url

When you put the username and password in front of the host, this data is not sent that way to the server. It is instead transformed to a request header depending on the authentication schema used. Most of the time this is going to be Basic Auth which I describe below. A similar (but significantly less often used) authentication scheme is Digest Auth which nowadays provides comparable security features.

With Basic Auth, the HTTP request from the question will look something like this:

GET / HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
Authorization: Basic Zm9vOnBhc3N3b3Jk

The hash like string you see there is created by the browser like this: base64_encode(username + ":" + password).

To outsiders of the HTTPS transfer, this information is hidden (as everything else on the HTTP level). You should take care of logging on the client and all intermediate servers though. The username will normally be shown in server logs, but the password won't. This is not guaranteed though. When you call that URL on the client with e.g. curl, the username and password will be clearly visible on the process list and might turn up in the bash history file.

When you send passwords in a GET request as e.g. http://example.com/login.php?username=me&password=secure the username and password will always turn up in server logs of your webserver, application server, caches, ... unless you specifically configure your servers to not log it. This only applies to servers being able to read the unencrypted http data, like your application server or any middleboxes such as loadbalancers, CDNs, proxies, etc. though.

Basic auth is standardized and implemented by browsers by showing this little username/password popup you might have seen already. When you put the username/password into an HTML form sent via GET or POST, you have to implement all the login/logout logic yourself (which might be an advantage and allows you to more control over the login/logout flow for the added "cost" of having to implement this securely again). But you should never transfer usernames and passwords by GET parameters. If you have to, use POST instead. The prevents the logging of this data by default.

When implementing an authentication mechanism with a user/password entry form and a subsequent cookie-based session as it is commonly used today, you have to make sure that the password is either transported with POST requests or one of the standardized authentication schemes above only.

Concluding I could say, that transfering data that way over HTTPS is likely safe, as long as you take care that the password does not turn up in unexpected places. But that advice applies to every transfer of any password in any way.

What's the difference between SCSS and Sass?

Its syntax is different, and that's the main pro (or con, depending on your perspective).

I'll try not to repeat much of what others said, you can easily google that but instead, I'd like to say a couple of things from my experience using both, sometimes even in the same project.

SASS pro

  • cleaner - if you are coming from Python, Ruby (you can even write props with symbol-like syntax) or even the CoffeeScript world, it will come very natural to you - writing mixins, functions and generally any reusable stuff in .sass is much 'easier' and readable than in .scss (subjective).

SASS cons

  • whitespace sensitive (subjective), I don't mind it in other languages but here in CSS it just bothers me (issues: copying, tab vs space war, etc).
  • no inline rules (this was game breaking for me), you can't do body color: red like you can in .scss body {color: red}
  • importing other vendor stuff, copying vanilla CSS snippets - not impossible but very boring after some time. The solution is to either have .scss files (alongside with .sass files) in your project or to convert them to .sass.

Other than this - they do the same job.

Now, what I like to do is to write mixins and variables in .sass and code that will actually compile to CSS in .scss if possible (ie Visual studio doesn't have support for .sass but whenever I work on Rails projects I usually combine two of them, not in one file ofc).

Lately, I'm considering giving Stylus a chance (for a full-time CSS preprocessor) because it allows you to combine two syntaxes in one file (among some other features). That may not be a good direction for a team to take but when you are maintaining it alone - it's ok. The stylus is actually most flexible when syntax is in question.

And finaly mixin for .scss vs .sass syntax comparison:

// SCSS
@mixin cover {
  $color: red;
  @for $i from 1 through 5 {
    &.bg-cover#{$i} { background-color: adjust-hue($color, 15deg * $i) }
  }
}
.wrapper { @include cover }

// SASS
=cover
  $color: red
  @for $i from 1 through 5
    &.bg-cover#{$i}
      background-color: adjust-hue($color, 15deg * $i)
.wrapper
  +cover

SQL Server ORDER BY date and nulls last

A bit late, but maybe someone finds it useful.

For me, ISNULL was out of question due to the table scan. UNION ALL would need me to repeat a complex query, and due to me selecting only the TOP X it would not have been very efficient.

If you are able to change the table design, you can:

  1. Add another field, just for sorting, such as Next_Contact_Date_Sort.

  2. Create a trigger that fills that field with a large (or small) value, depending on what you need:

    CREATE TRIGGER FILL_SORTABLE_DATE ON YOUR_TABLE AFTER INSERT,UPDATE AS
    BEGIN
        SET NOCOUNT ON;
        IF (update(Next_Contact_Date)) BEGIN
        UPDATE YOUR_TABLE SET Next_Contact_Date_Sort=IIF(YOUR_TABLE.Next_Contact_Date IS NULL, 99/99/9999, YOUR_TABLE.Next_Contact_Date_Sort) FROM inserted i WHERE YOUR_TABLE.key1=i.key1 AND YOUR_TABLE.key2=i.key2
        END
    END

Escape regex special characters in a Python string

Use re.escape

>>> import re
>>> re.escape(r'\ a.*$')
'\\\\\\ a\\.\\*\\$'
>>> print(re.escape(r'\ a.*$'))
\\\ a\.\*\$
>>> re.escape('www.stackoverflow.com')
'www\\.stackoverflow\\.com'
>>> print(re.escape('www.stackoverflow.com'))
www\.stackoverflow\.com

Repeating it here:

re.escape(string)

Return string with all non-alphanumerics backslashed; this is useful if you want to match an arbitrary literal string that may have regular expression metacharacters in it.

As of Python 3.7 re.escape() was changed to escape only characters which are meaningful to regex operations.

Using setDate in PreparedStatement

Not sure, but what I think you're looking for is to create a java.util.Date from a String, then convert that java.util.Date to a java.sql.Date.

try this:

private static java.sql.Date getCurrentDate(String date) {

    java.util.Date today;
    java.sql.Date rv = null;
    try {

        SimpleDateFormat format = new SimpleDateFormat("dd-MM-yyyy");
        today = format.parse(date);
        rv = new java.sql.Date(today.getTime());
        System.out.println(rv.getTime());

    } catch (Exception e) {
        System.out.println("Exception: " + e.getMessage());
    } finally {
        return rv;
    }

}

Will return a java.sql.Date object for setDate();

The function above will print out a long value:

1375934400000

JAVA - using FOR, WHILE and DO WHILE loops to sum 1 through 100

- First to me Iterating and Looping are 2 different things.

Eg: Increment a variable till 5 is Looping.

    int count = 0;

    for (int i=0 ; i<5 ; i++){

        count = count + 1;

   }

Eg: Iterate over the Array to print out its values, is about Iteration

    int[] arr = {5,10,15,20,25};

    for (int i=0 ; i<arr.length ; i++){

        System.out.println(arr[i]);

   }

Now about all the Loops:

- Its always better to use For-Loop when you know the exact nos of time you gonna Loop, and if you are not sure of it go for While-Loop. Yes out there many geniuses can say that it can be done gracefully with both of them and i don't deny with them...but these are few things which makes me execute my program flawlessly...

For Loop :

int sum = 0;

for (int i = 1; i <= 100; i++) {

  sum += i;

}

 System.out.println("The sum is " + sum);

The Difference between While and Do-While is as Follows :

- While is a Entry Control Loop, Condition is checked in the Beginning before entering the loop.

- Do-While is a Exit Control Loop, Atleast once the block is always executed then the Condition is checked.

While Loop :

int sum = 0;
int i = 0;       // i is 0 Here

    while (i<100) {

      sum += i;
      i++;

    }

  System.out.println("The sum is " + sum);

do-While :

int sum = 0;
int i = 0;      // i is 0 Here

    do{

      sum += i;
       i++
    }while(i < 100; );

     System.out.println("The sum is " + sum);

From Java 5 we also have For-Each Loop to iterate over the Collections, even its handy with Arrays.

ArrayList<String> arr = new ArrayList<String>();

arr.add("Vivek");
arr.add("Is");
arr.add("Good");
arr.add("Boy");

for (String str : arr){ // str represents the value in each index of arr

    System.out.println(str);

 }

How do servlets work? Instantiation, sessions, shared variables and multithreading

Session in Java servlets is the same as session in other languages such as PHP. It is unique to the user. The server can keep track of it in different ways such as cookies, url rewriting etc. This Java doc article explains it in the context of Java servlets and indicates that exactly how session is maintained is an implementation detail left to the designers of the server. The specification only stipulates that it must be maintained as unique to a user across multiple connections to the server. Check out this article from Oracle for more information about both of your questions.

Edit There is an excellent tutorial here on how to work with session inside of servlets. And here is a chapter from Sun about Java Servlets, what they are and how to use them. Between those two articles, you should be able to answer all of your questions.

How to add Action bar options menu in Android Fragments

You need to call setHasOptionsMenu(true) in onCreate().

For backwards compatibility it's better to place this call as late as possible at the end of onCreate() or even later in onActivityCreated() or something like that.

How to create file execute mode permissions in Git on Windows?

There's no need to do this in two commits, you can add the file and mark it executable in a single commit:

C:\Temp\TestRepo>touch foo.sh

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git add foo.sh

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git ls-files --stage
100644 e69de29bb2d1d6434b8b29ae775ad8c2e48c5391 0       foo.sh

As you note, after adding, the mode is 0644 (ie, not executable). However, we can mark it as executable before committing:

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git update-index --chmod=+x foo.sh

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git ls-files --stage
100755 e69de29bb2d1d6434b8b29ae775ad8c2e48c5391 0       foo.sh

And now the file is mode 0755 (executable).

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git commit -m"Executable!"
[master (root-commit) 1f7a57a] Executable!
 1 file changed, 0 insertions(+), 0 deletions(-)
 create mode 100755 foo.sh

And now we have a single commit with a single executable file.

Can't change z-index with JQuery

Setting the style.zIndex property has no effect on non-positioned elements, that is, the element must be either absolutely positioned, relatively positioned, or fixed.

So I would try:

$(this).parent().css('position', 'relative');
$(this).parent().css('z-index', 3000);

}

Use of min and max functions in C++

As Richard Corden pointed, use C++ functions min and max defined in std namespace. They provide type safety, and help to avoid comparing mixed types (i.e. float point vs integer) what sometimes may be undesirable.

If you find that C++ library you use defines min/max as macros as well, it may cause conflicts, then you can prevent unwanted macro substitution calling the min/max functions this way (notice extra brackets):

(std::min)(x, y)
(std::max)(x, y)

Remember, this will effectively disable Argument Dependant Lookup (ADL, also called Koenig lookup), in case you want to rely on ADL.

SQLSTATE[HY093]: Invalid parameter number: parameter was not defined

This error you are receiving :

SQLSTATE[HY093]: Invalid parameter number: parameter was not defined

is because the number of elements in $values & $matches is not the same or $matches contains more than 1 element.

If $matches contains more than 1 element, than the insert will fail, because there is only 1 column name referenced in the query(hash)

If $values & $matches do not contain the same number of elements then the insert will also fail, due to the query expecting x params but it is receiving y data $matches.

I believe you will also need to ensure the column hash has a unique index on it as well.

Try the code here:

<?php

/*** mysql hostname ***/
$hostname = 'localhost';

/*** mysql username ***/
$username = 'root';

/*** mysql password ***/
$password = '';

try {
    $dbh = new PDO("mysql:host=$hostname;dbname=test", $username, $password);
    /*** echo a message saying we have connected ***/
    echo 'Connected to database';
    }
catch(PDOException $e)
    {
    echo $e->getMessage();
    }

$matches = array('1');
$count = count($matches);
for($i = 0; $i < $count; ++$i) {
    $values[] = '?';
}

// INSERT INTO DATABASE
$sql = "INSERT INTO hashes (hash) VALUES (" . implode(', ', $values) . ") ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE hash='hash'";
$stmt = $dbh->prepare($sql);
$data = $stmt->execute($matches);

//Error reporting if something went wrong...
var_dump($dbh->errorInfo());

?>

You will need to adapt it a little.

Table structure I used is here:

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `hashes` (
  `hashid` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  `hash` varchar(250) NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (`hashid`),
  UNIQUE KEY `hash1` (`hash`)
) ENGINE=InnoDB  DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=1 ;

Code was run on my XAMPP Server which is using PHP 5.3.8 with MySQL 5.5.16.

I hope this helps.

Can't create handler inside thread which has not called Looper.prepare()

The error is self-explanatory... doInBackground() runs on a background thread which, since it is not intended to loop, is not connected to a Looper.

You most likely don't want to directly instantiate a Handler at all... whatever data your doInBackground() implementation returns will be passed to onPostExecute() which runs on the UI thread.

ADDED FOLLOWING THE STACKTRACE APPEARING IN QUESTION:

Looks like you're trying to start an AsyncTask from a GL rendering thread... don't do that cos they won't ever Looper.loop() either. AsyncTasks are really designed to be run from the UI thread only.

The least disruptive fix would probably be to call Activity.runOnUiThread() with a Runnable that kicks off your AsyncTask.

What does the CSS rule "clear: both" do?

Mr. Alien's answer is perfect, but anyway I don't recommend to use <div class="clear"></div> because it just a hack which makes your markup dirty. This is useless empty div in terms of bad structure and semantic, this also makes your code not flexible. In some browsers this div causes additional height and you have to add height: 0; which even worse. But real troubles begin when you want to add background or border around your floated elements - it just will collapse because web was designed badly. I do recommend to wrap floated elements into container which has clearfix CSS rule. This is hack as well, but beautiful, more flexible to use and readable for human and SEO robots.

Only using @JsonIgnore during serialization, but not deserialization

Since version 2.6: a more intuitive way is to use the com.fasterxml.jackson.annotation.JsonProperty annotation on the field:

@JsonProperty(access = Access.WRITE_ONLY)
private String myField;

Even if a getter exists, the field value is excluded from serialization.

JavaDoc says:

/**
 * Access setting that means that the property may only be written (set)
 * for deserialization,
 * but will not be read (get) on serialization, that is, the value of the property
 * is not included in serialization.
 */
WRITE_ONLY

In case you need it the other way around, just use Access.READ_ONLY.

How to count the number of observations in R like Stata command count

The with function will let you use shorthand column references and sum will count TRUE results from the expression(s).

sum(with(aaa, sex==1 & group1==2))
## [1] 3

sum(with(aaa, sex==1 & group2=="A"))
## [1] 2

As @mnel pointed out, you can also do:

nrow(aaa[aaa$sex==1 & aaa$group1==2,])
## [1] 3

nrow(aaa[aaa$sex==1 & aaa$group2=="A",])
## [1] 2

The benefit of that is that you can do:

nrow(aaa)
## [1] 6

And, the behaviour matches Stata's count almost exactly (syntax notwithstanding).

Error inflating class android.support.design.widget.NavigationView

I solved it downgrading in gradle from

compile 'com.android.support:design:23.1.0'

to

compile 'com.android.support:design:23.0.1'

It seems like I always get problems when I update any component of Android Studio. Getting tired of it.

How to check if a database exists in SQL Server?

I like @Eduardo's answer and I liked the accepted answer. I like to get back a boolean from something like this, so I wrote it up for you guys.

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.DatabaseExists(@dbname nvarchar(128))
RETURNS bit
AS
BEGIN
    declare @result bit = 0
    SELECT @result = CAST(
        CASE WHEN db_id(@dbname) is not null THEN 1
        ELSE 0
        END
    AS BIT)
    return @result
END
GO

Now you can use it like this:

select [dbo].[DatabaseExists]('master') --returns 1
select [dbo].[DatabaseExists]('slave') --returns 0

How to spawn a process and capture its STDOUT in .NET?

I just tried this very thing and the following worked for me:

StringBuilder outputBuilder;
ProcessStartInfo processStartInfo;
Process process;

outputBuilder = new StringBuilder();

processStartInfo = new ProcessStartInfo();
processStartInfo.CreateNoWindow = true;
processStartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true;
processStartInfo.RedirectStandardInput = true;
processStartInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
processStartInfo.Arguments = "<insert command line arguments here>";
processStartInfo.FileName = "<insert tool path here>";

process = new Process();
process.StartInfo = processStartInfo;
// enable raising events because Process does not raise events by default
process.EnableRaisingEvents = true;
// attach the event handler for OutputDataReceived before starting the process
process.OutputDataReceived += new DataReceivedEventHandler
(
    delegate(object sender, DataReceivedEventArgs e)
    {
        // append the new data to the data already read-in
        outputBuilder.Append(e.Data);
    }
);
// start the process
// then begin asynchronously reading the output
// then wait for the process to exit
// then cancel asynchronously reading the output
process.Start();
process.BeginOutputReadLine();
process.WaitForExit();
process.CancelOutputRead();

// use the output
string output = outputBuilder.ToString();

The name 'InitializeComponent' does not exist in the current context

yeap, so many things can be... I would add this one... make sure the App.xaml points to your Namespace (where your app file is) + .App eg. x:Class="DX.App" <=== make sure this is App and not the Main Page name

Hope this works for you too.

How do I add slashes to a string in Javascript?

To be sure, you need to not only replace the single quotes, but as well the already escaped ones:

"first ' and \' second".replace(/'|\\'/g, "\\'")

Find size of object instance in bytes in c#

For anyone looking for a solution that doesn't require [Serializable] classes and where the result is an approximation instead of exact science. The best method I could find is json serialization into a memorystream using UTF32 encoding.

private static long? GetSizeOfObjectInBytes(object item)
{
    if (item == null) return 0;
    try
    {
        // hackish solution to get an approximation of the size
        var jsonSerializerSettings = new JsonSerializerSettings
        {
            DateFormatHandling = DateFormatHandling.IsoDateFormat,
            DateTimeZoneHandling = DateTimeZoneHandling.Utc,
            MaxDepth = 10,
            ReferenceLoopHandling = ReferenceLoopHandling.Ignore
        };
        var formatter = new JsonMediaTypeFormatter { SerializerSettings = jsonSerializerSettings };
        using (var stream = new MemoryStream()) {
            formatter.WriteToStream(item.GetType(), item, stream, Encoding.UTF32);
            return stream.Length / 4; // 32 bits per character = 4 bytes per character
        }
    }
    catch (Exception)
    {
        return null;
    }
}

No, this won't give you the exact size that would be used in memory. As previously mentioned, that is not possible. But it'll give you a rough estimation.

Note that this is also pretty slow.

Blank HTML SELECT without blank item in dropdown list

You can by setting selectedIndex to -1 using .prop: http://jsfiddle.net/R9auG/.

For older jQuery versions use .attr instead of .prop: http://jsfiddle.net/R9auG/71/.

CSS text-overflow in a table cell?

Why does this happen?

It seems this section on w3.org suggests that text-overflow applies only to block elements:

11.1. Overflow Ellipsis: the ‘text-overflow’ property

text-overflow      clip | ellipsis | <string>
Initial:           clip
APPLIES TO:        BLOCK CONTAINERS               <<<<
Inherited:         no
Percentages:       N/A
Media:             visual
Computed value:    as specified

The MDN says the same.

This jsfiddle has your code (with a few debug modifications), which works fine if it's applied to a div instead of a td. It also has the only workaround I could quickly think of, by wrapping the contents of the td in a containing div block. However, that looks like "ugly" markup to me, so I'm hoping someone else has a better solution. The code to test this looks like this:

_x000D_
_x000D_
td, div {_x000D_
  overflow: hidden;_x000D_
  text-overflow: ellipsis;_x000D_
  white-space: nowrap;_x000D_
  border: 1px solid red;_x000D_
  width: 80px;_x000D_
}
_x000D_
Works, but no tables anymore:_x000D_
<div>Lorem ipsum and dim sum yeah yeah yeah. Lorem ipsum and dim sum yeah yeah yeah. Lorem ipsum and dim sum yeah yeah yeah. Lorem ipsum and dim sum yeah yeah yeah. Lorem ipsum and dim sum yeah yeah yeah.</div>_x000D_
_x000D_
Works, but non-semantic markup required:_x000D_

Set Page Title using PHP

I know this is an old post but having read this I think this solution is much simpler (though technically it solves the problem with Javascript not PHP).

    <html>
    <head>
    <title>Ultan.me - Unset</title>
    <script type="text/javascript">
        function setTitle( text ) {
            document.title = text;
        }
    </script>
    <!-- other head info -->
    </head>

    <?php
    // Make the call to the DB to get the title text. See OP post for example
    $title_text = "Ultan.me - DB Title";

    // Use body onload to set the title of the page
    print "<body onload=\"setTitle( '$title_text' )\"   >";

    // Rest of your code here
    print "<p>Either use php to print stuff</p>";
    ?>
    <p>or just drop in and out of php</p>
    <?php

    // close the html page
    print "</body></html>";
    ?>

Splitting on last delimiter in Python string?

Does Java have something like C#'s ref and out keywords?

Actually there is neither ref nor out keyword equivalent in Java language as far as I know. However I've just transformed a C# code into Java that uses out parameter and will advise what I've just done. You should wrap whatever object into a wrapper class and pass the values wrapped in wrapper object instance as follows;

A Simple Example For Using Wrapper

Here is the Wrapper Class;

public class Wrapper {
    public Object ref1; // use this as ref
    public Object ref2; // use this as out

    public Wrapper(Object ref1) {
        this.ref1 = ref1;
    }
}

And here is the test code;

public class Test {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        String abc = "abc";
        changeString(abc);
        System.out.println("Initial object: " + abc); //wont print "def"

        Wrapper w = new Wrapper(abc);
        changeStringWithWrapper(w);
        System.out.println("Updated object: " + w.ref1);
        System.out.println("Out     object: " + w.ref2);
    }

    // This won't work
    public static void changeString(String str) {
        str = "def";
    }

    // This will work
    public static void changeStringWithWrapper(Wrapper w) {
        w.ref1 = "def";
        w.ref2 = "And this should be used as out!";
    }

}

A Real World Example

A C#.NET method using out parameter

Here there is a C#.NET method that is using out keyword;

public bool Contains(T value)
{
    BinaryTreeNode<T> parent;
    return FindWithParent(value, out parent) != null;
}

private BinaryTreeNode<T> FindWithParent(T value, out BinaryTreeNode<T> parent)
{
    BinaryTreeNode<T> current = _head;
    parent = null;

    while(current != null)
    {
        int result = current.CompareTo(value);

        if (result > 0)
        {
            parent = current;
            current = current.Left;
        }
        else if (result < 0)
        {
            parent = current;
            current = current.Right;
        }
        else
        {
            break;
        }
    }

    return current;
}

Java Equivalent of the C# code that is using the out parameter

And the Java equivalent of this method with the help of wrapper class is as follows;

public boolean contains(T value) {
    BinaryTreeNodeGeneration<T> result = findWithParent(value);

    return (result != null);
}

private BinaryTreeNodeGeneration<T> findWithParent(T value) {
    BinaryTreeNode<T> current = head;
    BinaryTreeNode<T> parent = null;
    BinaryTreeNodeGeneration<T> resultGeneration = new BinaryTreeNodeGeneration<T>();
    resultGeneration.setParentNode(null);

    while(current != null) {
        int result = current.compareTo(value);

        if(result >0) {
            parent = current;
            current = current.left;
        } else if(result < 0) {
            parent = current;
            current = current.right;
        } else {
            break;
        }
    }

    resultGeneration.setChildNode(current);
    resultGeneration.setParentNode(parent);

    return resultGeneration;
}

Wrapper Class

And the wrapper class used in this Java code is as below;

public class BinaryTreeNodeGeneration<TNode extends Comparable<TNode>>  {

    private BinaryTreeNode<TNode>   parentNode;
    private BinaryTreeNode<TNode>   childNode;

    public BinaryTreeNodeGeneration() {
        this.parentNode = null;
        this.childNode = null;
    }

    public BinaryTreeNode<TNode> getParentNode() {
        return parentNode;
    }

    public void setParentNode(BinaryTreeNode<TNode> parentNode) {
        this.parentNode = parentNode;
    }

    public BinaryTreeNode<TNode> getChildNode() {
        return childNode;
    }

    public void setChildNode(BinaryTreeNode<TNode> childNode) {
        this.childNode = childNode;
    }

}

How to get the instance id from within an ec2 instance?

Motivation: User would like to Retrieve aws instance metadata.

Solution: The IP address 169.254.169.254 is a link-local address (and is valid only from the instance) aws gives us link with dedicated Restful API for Retrieving metadata of our running instance (Note that you are not billed for HTTP requests used to retrieve instance metadata and user data) . for Additional Documentation

Example:

//Request:
curl http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/instance-id

//Response

How to view/delete local storage in Firefox?

As 'localStorage' is just another object, you can: create, view, and edit it in the 'Console'. Simply enter 'localStorage' as a command and press enter, it'll display a string containing the key-value pairs of localStorage (Tip: Click on that string for formatted output, i.e. to display each key-value pair in each line).

Getting the computer name in Java

I agree with peterh's answer, so for those of you who like to copy and paste instead of 60 more seconds of Googling:

private String getComputerName()
{
    Map<String, String> env = System.getenv();
    if (env.containsKey("COMPUTERNAME"))
        return env.get("COMPUTERNAME");
    else if (env.containsKey("HOSTNAME"))
        return env.get("HOSTNAME");
    else
        return "Unknown Computer";
}

I have tested this in Windows 7 and it works. If peterh was right the else if should take care of Mac and Linux. Maybe someone can test this? You could also implement Brian Roach's answer inside the else if you wanted extra robustness.

What's the difference between StaticResource and DynamicResource in WPF?

I was also confused about them. See this example below:

<Window x:Class="WpfApplicationWPF.CommandsWindow"
        xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
        xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
        Title="CommandsWindow" Height="300" Width="300">

    <StackPanel>
        <Button Name="ButtonNew"
                Click="ButtonNew_Click"
                Background="{DynamicResource PinkBrush}">NEW</Button>
        <Image Name="ImageNew"
               Source="pack://application:,,,/images/winter.jpg"></Image>
    </StackPanel>

    <Window.Background>
        <DynamicResource ResourceKey="PinkBrush"></DynamicResource>
    </Window.Background>

</Window>

Here I have used dynamic resource for button and window and have not declared it anywhere.Upon runtime, the ResourceDictionary of the hierarchy will be checked.Since I have not defined it, I guess the default will be used.

If I add the code below to click event of Button, since they use DynamicResource, the background will be updated accordingly.

private void ButtonNew_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
{
    this.Resources.Add(  "PinkBrush"
                         ,new SolidColorBrush(SystemColors.DesktopColor)
                       );
}

If they had used StaticResource:

  • The resource has to be declared in XAML
  • And that too "before" they are used.

Hope I cleared some confusion.

Removing all non-numeric characters from string in Python

Just to add another option to the mix, there are several useful constants within the string module. While more useful in other cases, they can be used here.

>>> from string import digits
>>> ''.join(c for c in "abc123def456" if c in digits)
'123456'

There are several constants in the module, including:

  • ascii_letters (abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
  • hexdigits (0123456789abcdefABCDEF)

If you are using these constants heavily, it can be worthwhile to covert them to a frozenset. That enables O(1) lookups, rather than O(n), where n is the length of the constant for the original strings.

>>> digits = frozenset(digits)
>>> ''.join(c for c in "abc123def456" if c in digits)
'123456'

How to store NULL values in datetime fields in MySQL?

MySQL does allow NULL values for datetime fields. I just tested it:

mysql> create table datetimetest (testcolumn datetime null default null);
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.10 sec)

mysql> insert into datetimetest (testcolumn) values (null);
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)

mysql> select * from datetimetest;
+------------+
| testcolumn |
+------------+
| NULL       |
+------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

I'm using this version:

mysql> select version();
+-----------+
| version() |
+-----------+
| 5.0.45    |
+-----------+
1 row in set (0.03 sec)

EDIT #1: I see in your edit that the error message you are getting in PHP indicates that you are passing an empty string (i.e. ''), not null. An empty string is different than null and is not a valid datetime value which is why you are getting that error message. You must pass the special sql keyword null if that's what you mean. Also, don't put any quotes around the word null. See my insert statement above for an example of how to insert null.

EDIT #2: Are you using PDO? If so, when you bind your null param, make sure to use the [PDO::PARAM_NULL][1] type when binding a null. See the answer to this stackoverflow question on how to properly insert null using PDO.

jQuery - How to dynamically add a validation rule

In case you want jquery validate to auto pick validations on dynamically added items, you can simply remove and add validation on the whole form like below

//remove validations on entire form
$("#yourFormId")
    .removeData("validator")
    .removeData("unobtrusiveValidation");

//Simply add it again
$.validator
    .unobtrusive
    .parse("#yourFormId");

How to type a new line character in SQL Server Management Studio

You're talking about right-clicking on a table and selecting "Edit Top 50 Rows", right?

I tried [Ctl][Enter] and [Alt][Enter], but neither of those works.

Even when I insert data with CR/LF (using a standard INSERT statement), it shows up here in a single line with a rectangle representing the control codes.

Turn off enclosing <p> tags in CKEditor 3.0

Edit the source (or turn off rich text) and replace the p tag with a div. Then style the div any which way you want.

ckEditor won't add any wrapper element on the next submit as you've got the div in there.

(This solved my issue, I'm using Drupal and need small snippets of html which the editor always added the extra, but the rest of the time I want the wrapping p tag).

Trying to make some order:

it all works - all but the firefox bookmarking function. for some reason the 'window.sidebar.addPanel' is not a function for the debugger, though it is working fine.

The problem is that it takes its values from the calling <a ..> tag: title as the bookmark name and href as the bookmark address. so this is my code:

How to git reset --hard a subdirectory?

For the case of simply discarding changes, the git checkout -- path/ or git checkout HEAD -- path/ commands suggested by other answers work great. However, when you wish to reset a directory to a revision other than HEAD, that solution has a significant problem: it doesn't remove files which were deleted in the target revision.

So instead, I have begun using the following command:

git diff --cached commit -- subdir | git apply -R --index

This works by finding the diff between the target commit and the index, then applying that diff in reverse to the working directory and index. Basically, this means that it makes the contents of the index match the contents of the revision you specified. The fact that git diff takes a path argument allows you to limit this effect to a specific file or directory.

Since this command fairly long and I plan on using it frequently, I have set up an alias for it which I named reset-checkout:

git config --global alias.reset-checkout '!f() { git diff --cached "$@" | git apply -R --index; }; f'

You can use it like this:

git reset-checkout 451a9a4 -- path/to/directory

Or just:

git reset-checkout 451a9a4

Detecting installed programs via registry

You could use MSI API to enumerate everything installed by Windows Installer but that won't list all the software available on a machine. Without knowing more about what you need I think the concept of "installed" is a little vague. There are many ways to deploy software to a system ranging from big complicated installers to ZIP files and everything in between.

Finding an elements XPath using IE Developer tool

This post suggests that you should be able to get the IE Developer Toolbar to show you the XPath for an element you click on if you turn on the "select element by click" option. http://blog.balfes.net/?p=62

capture div into image using html2canvas

I ran into the same type of error you described, but mine was due to the dom not being completely ready to go. I tested with both jQuery pulling the div and also getElementById just to make sure there wasn't something strange with the jQuery selector. Below is an example that works in Chrome:

<html>
<head>
<style type="text/css">
div {
    height: 50px;
    width: 50px;
    background-color: #2C7CC3;
}
</style>
<script type="text/javascript" src="html2canvas.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.9.1.js"></script>
<script language="javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
//var testdiv = document.getElementById("testdiv");
    html2canvas($("#testdiv"), {
        onrendered: function(canvas) {
            // canvas is the final rendered <canvas> element
            var myImage = canvas.toDataURL("image/png");
            window.open(myImage);
        }
    });
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
<div id="testdiv">
</div>
</body>
</html>

Replace multiple strings with multiple other strings

This worked for me:

String.prototype.replaceAll = function(search, replacement) {
    var target = this;
    return target.replace(new RegExp(search, 'g'), replacement);
};

function replaceAll(str, map){
    for(key in map){
        str = str.replaceAll(key, map[key]);
    }
    return str;
}

//testing...
var str = "bat, ball, cat";
var map = {
    'bat' : 'foo',
    'ball' : 'boo',
    'cat' : 'bar'
};
var new = replaceAll(str, map);
//result: "foo, boo, bar"

Getting hold of the outer class object from the inner class object

You could (but you shouldn't) use reflection for the job:

import java.lang.reflect.Field;

public class Outer {
    public class Inner {
    }

    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {

        // Create the inner instance
        Inner inner = new Outer().new Inner();

        // Get the implicit reference from the inner to the outer instance
        // ... make it accessible, as it has default visibility
        Field field = Inner.class.getDeclaredField("this$0");
        field.setAccessible(true);

        // Dereference and cast it
        Outer outer = (Outer) field.get(inner);
        System.out.println(outer);
    }
}

Of course, the name of the implicit reference is utterly unreliable, so as I said, you shouldn't :-)

Angular 4 - Observable catch error

catch needs to return an observable.

.catch(e => { console.log(e); return Observable.of(e); })

if you'd like to stop the pipeline after a caught error, then do this:

.catch(e => { console.log(e); return Observable.of(null); }).filter(e => !!e)

this catch transforms the error into a null val and then filter doesn't let falsey values through. This will however, stop the pipeline for ANY falsey value, so if you think those might come through and you want them to, you'll need to be more explicit / creative.

edit:

better way of stopping the pipeline is to do

.catch(e => Observable.empty())

Request UAC elevation from within a Python script?

It seems there's no way to elevate the application privileges for a while for you to perform a particular task. Windows needs to know at the start of the program whether the application requires certain privileges, and will ask the user to confirm when the application performs any tasks that need those privileges. There are two ways to do this:

  1. Write a manifest file that tells Windows the application might require some privileges
  2. Run the application with elevated privileges from inside another program

This two articles explain in much more detail how this works.

What I'd do, if you don't want to write a nasty ctypes wrapper for the CreateElevatedProcess API, is use the ShellExecuteEx trick explained in the Code Project article (Pywin32 comes with a wrapper for ShellExecute). How? Something like this:

When your program starts, it checks if it has Administrator privileges, if it doesn't it runs itself using the ShellExecute trick and exits immediately, if it does, it performs the task at hand.

As you describe your program as a "script", I suppose that's enough for your needs.

Cheers.

What does "var" mean in C#?

  • As the name suggested, var is variable without any data type.
  • If you don't know which type of data will be returned by any method, such cases are good for using var.
  • var is Implicit type which means system will define the data type itself. The compiler will infer its type based on the value to the right of the "=" operator.
  • int/string etc. are the explicit types as it is defined by you explicitly.
  • Var can only be defined in a method as a local variable
  • Multiple vars cannot be declared and initialized in a single statement. For example, var i=1, j=2; is invalid.
int i = 100;// explicitly typed
var j = 100; // implicitly typed

jQuery: Test if checkbox is NOT checked

An alternative way:

Here is a working example and here is the code, you should also use prop.

$('input[type="checkbox"]').mouseenter(function() {
    if ($(this).is(':checked')) {
        //$(this).prop('checked',false);
        alert("is checked");
    } else {
         //$(this).prop('checked',true);
        alert("not checked");
    }
});?

I commented out the way to toggle the checked attribute.

Partial Dependency (Databases)

I hope this explaination gives a more intuitive appeal to dependency than the answers previously given.

Functional Dependency

An analysis of dependency operates on the attribute level, i.e. one or more attribute is determined by another attribute, it comes before the concept of keys. 'The role of a key is based on the concept of determination. 'Determination is the state in which knowing the value of one attribute makes it possible to determine the value of another.' Database Systems 12ed

Functional dependency is when one or more attributes determine one or more attributes. For instance:

Social Security Number -> First Name, Last Name.

However, by definition of functional dependency:

(SSN, First Name) -> Last Name

This is also a valid functional dependency. The determinants (The attribute that which determines another attribution) are called super key.

Full Functional Dependency

Thus, as a subset of functional dependency, there is the concept of full functional dependency, where the bare minimal determinant is considered. We refer those bare minimal determinants collectively as one candidate key (weird linguistic quirk in my opinion, like the concept of vector).

Partial Functional Dependency

However, sometimes one of the attributes in the candidate key is sufficient to determine another attribute(s), BUT not all, in a relation (a table with no rows). That, is when you have a partial functional dependency within a relation.

Java: How To Call Non Static Method From Main Method?

You simply need to create an instance of ReportHandler:

ReportHandler rh = new ReportHandler(/* constructor args here */);
rh.executeBatchInsert(); // Having fixed name to follow conventions

The important point of instance methods is that they're meant to be specific to a particular instance of the class... so you'll need to create an instance first. That way the instance will have access to the right connection and prepared statement in your case. Just calling ReportHandler.executeBatchInsert, there isn't enough context.

It's really important that you understand that:

  • Instance methods (and fields etc) relate to a particular instance
  • Static methods and fields relate to the type itself, not a particular instance

Once you understand that fundamental difference, it makes sense that you can't call an instance method without creating an instance... For example, it makes sense to ask, "What is the height of that person?" (for a specific person) but it doesn't make sense to ask, "What is the height of Person?" (without specifying a person).

Assuming you're leaning Java from a book or tutorial, you should read up on more examples of static and non-static methods etc - it's a vital distinction to understand, and you'll have all kinds of problems until you've understood it.

Why won't my PHP app send a 404 error?

if($_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] == '/index.php'){
   header('HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found');
   echo "<h1>404 Not Found</h1>";
   echo "The page that you have requested could not be found.";
   die;
}

never simplify the echo statements, and never forget the semi colon like above, also why run a substr on the page, we can easily just run php_self

creating an array of structs in c++

You can't use an initialization-list for a struct after it's been initialized. You've already default-initialized the two Customer structs when you declared the array customerRecords. Therefore you're going to have either use member-access syntax to set the value of the non-static data members, initialize the structs using a list of initialization lists when you declare the array itself, or you can create a constructor for your struct and use the default operator= member function to initialize the array members.

So either of the following could work:

Customer customerRecords[2];
customerRecords[0].uid = 25;
customerRecords[0].name = "Bob Jones";
customerRecords[1].uid = 25;
customerRecords[1].namem = "Jim Smith";

Or if you defined a constructor for your struct like:

Customer::Customer(int id, string input_name): uid(id), name(input_name) {}

You could then do:

Customer customerRecords[2];
customerRecords[0] = Customer(25, "Bob Jones");
customerRecords[1] = Customer(26, "Jim Smith");

Or you could do the sequence of initialization lists that Tuomas used in his answer. The reason his initialization-list syntax works is because you're actually initializing the Customer structs at the time of the declaration of the array, rather than allowing the structs to be default-initialized which takes place whenever you declare an aggregate data-structure like an array.

How to round up the result of integer division?

HOW TO ROUND UP THE RESULT OF INTEGER DIVISION IN C#

I was interested to know what the best way is to do this in C# since I need to do this in a loop up to nearly 100k times. Solutions posted by others using Math are ranked high in the answers, but in testing I found them slow. Jarod Elliott proposed a better tactic in checking if mod produces anything.

int result = (int1 / int2);
if (int1 % int2 != 0) { result++; }

I ran this in a loop 1 million times and it took 8ms. Here is the code using Math:

int result = (int)Math.Ceiling((double)int1 / (double)int2);

Which ran at 14ms in my testing, considerably longer.

How to create a zip archive of a directory in Python?

Here's a modern approach, using pathlib, and a context manager. Puts the files directly in the zip, rather than in a subfolder.

def zip_dir(filename: str, dir_to_zip: pathlib.Path):
    with zipfile.ZipFile(filename, 'w', zipfile.ZIP_DEFLATED) as zipf:
        # Use glob instead of iterdir(), to cover all subdirectories.
        for directory in dir_to_zip.glob('**'):
            for file in directory.iterdir():
                if not file.is_file():
                    continue
                # Strip the first component, so we don't create an uneeded subdirectory
                # containing everything.
                zip_path = pathlib.Path(*file.parts[1:])
                # Use a string, since zipfile doesn't support pathlib directly.
                zipf.write(str(file), str(zip_path))

How can I pass a Bitmap object from one activity to another

You can create a bitmap transfer. try this....

In the first class:

1) Create:

private static Bitmap bitmap_transfer;

2) Create getter and setter

public static Bitmap getBitmap_transfer() {
    return bitmap_transfer;
}

public static void setBitmap_transfer(Bitmap bitmap_transfer_param) {
    bitmap_transfer = bitmap_transfer_param;
}

3) Set the image:

ImageView image = (ImageView) view.findViewById(R.id.image);
image.buildDrawingCache();
setBitmap_transfer(image.getDrawingCache());

Then, in the second class:

ImageView image2 = (ImageView) view.findViewById(R.id.img2);
imagem2.setImageDrawable(new BitmapDrawable(getResources(), classe1.getBitmap_transfer()));

How to check if NSString begins with a certain character

This nice little bit of code I found by chance, and I have yet to see it suggested on Stack. It only works if the characters you want to remove or alter exist, which is convenient in many scenarios. If the character/s does not exist, it won't alter your NSString:

NSString = [yourString stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"YOUR CHARACTERS YOU WANT TO REMOVE" withString:@"CAN either be EMPTY or WITH TEXT REPLACEMENT"];

This is how I use it:

//declare what to look for
NSString * suffixTorRemove = @"&lt;/p&gt;";
NSString * prefixToRemove = @"&lt;p&gt;";
NSString * randomCharacter = @"&lt;/strong&gt;";
NSString * moreRandom = @"&lt;strong&gt;";
NSString * makeAndSign = @"&amp;amp;";

//I AM INSERTING A VALUE FROM A DATABASE AND HAVE ASSIGNED IT TO returnStr
returnStr = [returnStr stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:suffixTorRemove withString:@""];
returnStr = [returnStr stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:prefixToRemove withString:@""];
returnStr = [returnStr stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:randomCharacter withString:@""];
returnStr = [returnStr stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:moreRandom withString:@""];
returnStr = [returnStr stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:makeAndSign withString:@"&"];

//check the output
NSLog(@"returnStr IS NOW: %@", returnStr);

This one line is super easy to perform three actions in one:

  1. Checks your string for the character/s you do not want
  2. Can replaces them with whatever you like
  3. Does not affect surrounding code

What does mysql error 1025 (HY000): Error on rename of './foo' (errorno: 150) mean?

It is indeed a foreign key error, you can find out using perror:

shell$ perror 150
MySQL error code 150: Foreign key constraint is incorrectly formed

To find out more details about what failed, you can use SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS and look for the LATEST FOREIGN KEY ERROR section it contains details about what is wrong.

In your case, it is most likely cause something is referencing the country_id column.

How is __eq__ handled in Python and in what order?

When Python2.x sees a == b, it tries the following.

  • If type(b) is a new-style class, and type(b) is a subclass of type(a), and type(b) has overridden __eq__, then the result is b.__eq__(a).
  • If type(a) has overridden __eq__ (that is, type(a).__eq__ isn't object.__eq__), then the result is a.__eq__(b).
  • If type(b) has overridden __eq__, then the result is b.__eq__(a).
  • If none of the above are the case, Python repeats the process looking for __cmp__. If it exists, the objects are equal iff it returns zero.
  • As a final fallback, Python calls object.__eq__(a, b), which is True iff a and b are the same object.

If any of the special methods return NotImplemented, Python acts as though the method didn't exist.

Note that last step carefully: if neither a nor b overloads ==, then a == b is the same as a is b.

html5: display video inside canvas

Using canvas to display Videos

Displaying a video is much the same as displaying an image. The minor differences are to do with onload events and the fact that you need to render the video every frame or you will only see one frame not the animated frames.

The demo below has some minor differences to the example. A mute function (under the video click mute/sound on to toggle sound) and some error checking to catch IE9+ and Edge if they don't have the correct drivers.

Keeping answers current.

The previous answers by user372551 is out of date (December 2010) and has a flaw in the rendering technique used. It uses the setTimeout and a rate of 33.333..ms which setTimeout will round down to 33ms this will cause the frames to be dropped every two seconds and may drop many more if the video frame rate is any higher than 30. Using setTimeout will also introduce video shearing created because setTimeout can not be synced to the display hardware.

There is currently no reliable method that can determine a videos frame rate unless you know the video frame rate in advance you should display it at the maximum display refresh rate possible on browsers. 60fps

The given top answer was for the time (6 years ago) the best solution as requestAnimationFrame was not widely supported (if at all) but requestAnimationFrame is now standard across the Major browsers and should be used instead of setTimeout to reduce or remove dropped frames, and to prevent shearing.

The example demo.

Loads a video and set it to loop. The video will not play until the you click on it. Clicking again will pause. There is a mute/sound on button under the video. The video is muted by default.

Note users of IE9+ and Edge. You may not be able to play the video format WebM as it needs additional drivers to play the videos. They can be found at tools.google.com Download IE9+ WebM support

How can I find the number of years between two dates?

Thanks @Ole V.v for reviewing it: i have found some inbuilt library classes which does the same

    int noOfMonths = 0;
    org.joda.time.format.DateTimeFormatter formatter = DateTimeFormat
            .forPattern("yyyy-MM-dd");
    DateTime dt = formatter.parseDateTime(startDate);

    DateTime endDate11 = new DateTime();
    Months m = Months.monthsBetween(dt, endDate11);
    noOfMonths = m.getMonths();
    System.out.println(noOfMonths);

Read an Excel file directly from a R script

library(RODBC)
file.name <- "file.xls"
sheet.name <- "Sheet Name"

## Connect to Excel File Pull and Format Data
excel.connect <- odbcConnectExcel(file.name)
dat <- sqlFetch(excel.connect, sheet.name, na.strings=c("","-"))
odbcClose(excel.connect)

Personally, I like RODBC and can recommend it.

Function to Calculate a CRC16 Checksum

crcany will generate efficient C code for any CRC, and includes a library of over one hundred known CRC definitions.

Efficient CRC code uses tables instead of bit-wise calculations. crcany generates both byte-wise routines and word-wise routines, the latter tuned to the architecture they are generated on. Word-wise is the fastest. Byte-wise is still much faster than bit-wise, but the implementation is more easily portable over architectures.

You do not seem to have a protocol definition with a specific CRC definition that you need to match. In this case, you can pick any 16-bit CRC in the catalog, and you will get good performance.

If you have a relatively low bit error rate, e.g. single digit number of errors per packet, and you want to maximize your error detection performance, you would need to look at the packet size you are applying the CRC to, assuming that that is constant or bounded, and look at the performance of the best polynomials in Philip Koopman's extensive research. The classic CRCs, such as the CCITT/Kermit 16-bit CRC or the X.25 16-bit CRC are not the best performers.

One of the good 16-bit performers in Koopman's tables that is also in the catalog of CRCs used in practice is CRC-16/DNP. It has very good performance detecting up to 6-bit errors in a packet. Following is the code generated by crcany for that CRC definition. This code assumes a little-endian architecture for the word-wise calculation, e.g. Intel x86 and x86-64, and it assumes that uintmax_t is 64 bits. crcany can be used to generate alternative code for big-endian and other word sizes.

crc16dnp.h:

// The _bit, _byte, and _word routines return the CRC of the len bytes at mem,
// applied to the previous CRC value, crc. If mem is NULL, then the other
// arguments are ignored, and the initial CRC, i.e. the CRC of zero bytes, is
// returned. Those routines will all return the same result, differing only in
// speed and code complexity. The _rem routine returns the CRC of the remaining
// bits in the last byte, for when the number of bits in the message is not a
// multiple of eight. The low bits bits of the low byte of val are applied to
// crc. bits must be in 0..8.

#include <stddef.h>

// Compute the CRC a bit at a time.
unsigned crc16dnp_bit(unsigned crc, void const *mem, size_t len);

// Compute the CRC of the low bits bits in val.

// Compute the CRC a byte at a time.
unsigned crc16dnp_byte(unsigned crc, void const *mem, size_t len);

// Compute the CRC a word at a time.
unsigned crc16dnp_word(unsigned crc, void const *mem, size_t len);

crc16dnp.c:

#include <stdint.h>
#include "crc16dnp.h"

// This code assumes that unsigned is 4 bytes.

unsigned crc16dnp_bit(unsigned crc, void const *mem, size_t len) {
    unsigned char const *data = mem;

    }
    crc ^= 0xffff;
    return crc;
}

unsigned crc16dnp_rem(unsigned crc, unsigned val, unsigned bits) {
    crc = ~crc;
    crc &= 0xffff;
    val &= (1U << bits) - 1;
    crc ^= val;

Cannot delete or update a parent row: a foreign key constraint fails

I tried the solution mentioned by @Alino Manzi but it didn't work for me on the WordPress related tables using wpdb.

then I modified the code as below and it worked

SET FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS=OFF; //disabling foreign key

//run the queries which are giving foreign key errors

SET FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS=ON; // enabling foreign key

How to send a HTTP OPTIONS request from the command line?

The curl installed by default in Debian supports HTTPS since a great while back. (a long time ago there were two separate packages, one with and one without SSL but that's not the case anymore)

OPTIONS /path

You can send an OPTIONS request with curl like this:

curl -i -X OPTIONS http://example.org/path

You may also use -v instead of -i to see more output.

OPTIONS *

To send a plain * (instead of the path, see RFC 7231) with the OPTIONS method, you need curl 7.55.0 or later as then you can run a command line like:

curl -i --request-target "*" -X OPTIONS http://example.org

Press Keyboard keys using a batch file

Wow! Mean this that you must learn a different programming language just to send two keys to the keyboard? There are simpler ways for you to achieve the same thing. :-)

The Batch file below is an example that start another program (cmd.exe in this case), send a command to it and then send an Up Arrow key, that cause to recover the last executed command. The Batch file is simple enough to be understand with no problems, so you may modify it to fit your needs.

@if (@CodeSection == @Batch) @then

@echo off

rem Use %SendKeys% to send keys to the keyboard buffer
set SendKeys=CScript //nologo //E:JScript "%~F0"

// JScript section

var WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell");
WshShell.SendKeys(WScript.Arguments(0));

For a list of key names for SendKeys, see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8c6yea83(v=vs.84).aspx

For example:

LEFT ARROW    {LEFT}
RIGHT ARROW   {RIGHT}

How to solve java.lang.NullPointerException error?

A NullPointerException means that one of the variables you are passing is null, but the code tries to use it like it is not.

For example, If I do this:

Integer myInteger = null;
int n = myInteger.intValue();

The code tries to grab the intValue of myInteger, but since it is null, it does not have one: a null pointer exception happens.

What this means is that your getTask method is expecting something that is not a null, but you are passing a null. Figure out what getTask needs and pass what it wants!

Is there a method to generate a UUID with go language

The gorand package has a UUID method that returns a Version 4 (randomly generated) UUID in its canonical string representation ("xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx") and it's RFC 4122 compliant.

It also uses the crypto/rand package to ensure the most cryptographically secure generation of UUIDs across all platforms supported by Go.

import "github.com/leonelquinteros/gorand"

func main() {
    uuid, err := gorand.UUID()
    if err != nil {
        panic(err.Error())
    }

    println(uuid)
}

What is the Java equivalent for LINQ?

Now that Java 8 supports lambdas, it's possible to create Java APIs that closely resemble LINQ.

Jinq is one of these new LINQ-style libraries for Java.

I am the developer of this library. It is based on five years of research on using bytecode analysis to translate Java to database queries. Similar to how C#'s D-LINQ is a query layer that sits on top of the Entity Framework, Jinq is able to act as a query layer sitting on top of JPA or jOOQ. It has support for aggregation, groups, and subqueries. Even Erik Meijer (the creator of LINQ) has acknowledged Jinq.

Convert Mercurial project to Git

Another option is to create a free Kiln account -- kiln round trips between git and hg with 100% metadata retention, so you can use it for a one time convert or use it to access a repository using whichever client you prefer.

How can I limit possible inputs in a HTML5 "number" element?

This might help someone.

With a little of javascript you can search for all datetime-local inputs, search if the year the user is trying to input, greater that 100 years in the future:

$('input[type=datetime-local]').each(function( index ) {

    $(this).change(function() {
      var today = new Date();
      var date = new Date(this.value);
      var yearFuture = new Date();
      yearFuture.setFullYear(yearFuture.getFullYear()+100);

      if(date.getFullYear() > yearFuture.getFullYear()) {

        this.value = today.getFullYear() + this.value.slice(4);
      }
    })
  });

Xcopy Command excluding files and folders

It is same as above answers, but is simple in steps

c:\SRC\folder1

c:\SRC\folder2

c:\SRC\folder3

c:\SRC\folder4

to copy all above folders to c:\DST\ except folder1 and folder2.

Step1: create a file c:\list.txt with below content, one folder name per one line

folder1\

folder2\

Step2: Go to command pompt and run as below xcopy c:\SRC*.* c:\DST*.* /EXCLUDE:c:\list.txt

How do I show running processes in Oracle DB?

Keep in mind that there are processes on the database which may not currently support a session.

If you're interested in all processes you'll want to look to v$process (or gv$process on RAC)

Detecting Windows or Linux?

I think It's a best approach to use Apache lang dependency to decide which OS you're running programmatically through Java

import org.apache.commons.lang3.SystemUtils;

public class App {
    public static void main( String[] args ) {
        if(SystemUtils.IS_OS_WINDOWS_7)
            System.out.println("It's a Windows 7 OS");
        if(SystemUtils.IS_OS_WINDOWS_8)
            System.out.println("It's a Windows 8 OS");
        if(SystemUtils.IS_OS_LINUX)
            System.out.println("It's a Linux OS");
        if(SystemUtils.IS_OS_MAC)
            System.out.println("It's a MAC OS");
    }
}

Setting values on a copy of a slice from a DataFrame

This warning comes because your dataframe x is a copy of a slice. This is not easy to know why, but it has something to do with how you have come to the current state of it.

You can either create a proper dataframe out of x by doing

x = x.copy()

This will remove the warning, but it is not the proper way

You should be using the DataFrame.loc method, as the warning suggests, like this:

x.loc[:,'Mass32s'] = pandas.rolling_mean(x.Mass32, 5).shift(-2)

Converting a view to Bitmap without displaying it in Android?

Hope this helps

View view="some view instance";
view.setDrawingCacheEnabled(true);
Bitmap bitmap=view.getDrawingCache();
view.setDrawingCacheEnabled(false);

Update
getDrawingCache() method is deprecated in API level 28. So look for other alternative for API level > 28.

Move an item inside a list?

A slightly shorter solution, that only moves the item to the end, not anywhere is this:

l += [l.pop(0)]

For example:

>>> l = [1,2,3,4,5]
>>> l += [l.pop(0)]
>>> l
[2, 3, 4, 5, 1]

How to run a command in the background and get no output?

Use nohup if your background job takes a long time to finish or you just use SecureCRT or something like it login the server.

Redirect the stdout and stderr to /dev/null to ignore the output.

nohup /path/to/your/script.sh > /dev/null 2>&1 &

Highlight Bash/shell code in Markdown files

I found a good description at Markdown Cheatsheet:

Code blocks are part of the Markdown spec, but syntax highlighting isn't.

However, many renderers -- like GitHub's and Markdown Here -- support syntax highlighting. Which languages are supported and how those language names should be written will vary from renderer to renderer. Markdown Here supports highlighting for dozens of languages (and not-really-languages, like diffs and HTTP headers); to see the complete list, and how to write the language names, see the highlight.js demo page.

Although I could not find any official GitHub documentation about using highlight.js, I've tested lots of languages and seemed to be working

To see list of languages I used https://github.com/highlightjs/highlight.js/blob/master/SUPPORTED_LANGUAGES.md

Some shell samples:

Shell:      console, shell
Bash:       bash, sh, zsh
PowerShell: powershell, ps
DOS:        dos, bat, cmd

Example:

```bat
cd \
copy a b
ping 192.168.0.1
```

How to undo a SQL Server UPDATE query?

If you can catch this in time and you don't have the ability to ROLLBACK or use the transaction log, you can take a backup immediately and use a tool like Redgate's SQL Data Compare to generate a script to "restore" the affected data. This worked like a charm for me. :)

Check whether a path is valid

Try Uri.IsWellFormedUriString():

  • The string is not correctly escaped.

      http://www.example.com/path???/file name

  • The string is an absolute Uri that represents an implicit file Uri.

      c:\\directory\filename

  • The string is an absolute URI that is missing a slash before the path.

      file://c:/directory/filename

  • The string contains unescaped backslashes even if they are treated as forward slashes.

      http:\\host/path/file

  • The string represents a hierarchical absolute Uri and does not contain "://".

      www.example.com/path/file

  • The parser for the Uri.Scheme indicates that the original string was not well-formed.

      The example depends on the scheme of the URI.

How do you split a list into evenly sized chunks?

An abstraction would be

l = [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9]
n = 3
outList = []
for i in range(n, len(l) + n, n):
    outList.append(l[i-n:i])

print(outList)

This will print:

[[1, 2, 3], [4, 5, 6], [7, 8, 9]]

Datetime BETWEEN statement not working in SQL Server

You need to convert the date field to varchar to strip out the time, then convert it back to datetime, this will reset the time to '00:00:00.000'.

Timeout jQuery effects

Ben Alman wrote a sweet plugin for jQuery called doTimeout. It has a lot of nice features!

Check it out here: jQuery doTimeout: Like setTimeout, but better.

Java 8 - Difference between Optional.flatMap and Optional.map

You can refer below link to understand in detail (best explanation which I could find):

https://www.programmergirl.com/java-8-map-flatmap-difference/

Both map and flatMap - accept Function. The return type of map() is a single value whereas flatMap is returning stream of values

<R> Stream<R> map(Function<? super T, ? extends R> mapper)

<R> Stream<R> flatMap(Function<? super T, ? extends Stream<? extends R>> mapper)

Making a DateTime field in a database automatic?

Just right click on that column and select properties and write getdate()in Default value or binding.like image:

enter image description here

If you want do it in CodeFirst in EF you should add this attributes befor of your column definition:

[Databasegenerated(Databaseoption.computed)]

this attributes can found in System.ComponentModel.Dataannotion.Schema.

In my opinion first one is better:))

How do I choose the URL for my Spring Boot webapp?

In your src/main/resources put an application.properties or application.yml and put a server.contextPath in there.

server.contextPath=/your/context/here

When starting your application the application will be available at http://localhost:8080/your/context/here.

For a comprehensive list of properties to set see Appendix A. of the Spring Boot reference guide.

Instead of putting it in the application.properties you can also pass it as a system property when starting your application

java -jar yourapp.jar -Dserver.contextPath=/your/path/here

make arrayList.toArray() return more specific types

I got the answer...this seems to be working perfectly fine

public int[] test ( int[]b )
{
    ArrayList<Integer> l = new ArrayList<Integer>();
    Object[] returnArrayObject = l.toArray();
    int returnArray[] = new int[returnArrayObject.length];
    for (int i = 0; i < returnArrayObject.length; i++){
         returnArray[i] = (Integer)  returnArrayObject[i];
    }

    return returnArray;
}

How can I position my div at the bottom of its container?

Create another container div for the elements above #copyright. Just above copyright add a new div: <div style="clear:both;"></div> It will force the footer to be under everything else, just like in the case of using relative positioning (bottom:0px;).

Using for loop inside of a JSP

You concrete problem is caused because you're mixing discouraged and old school scriptlets <% %> with its successor EL ${}. They do not share the same variable scope. The allFestivals is not available in scriptlet scope and the i is not available in EL scope.

You should install JSTL (<-- click the link for instructions) and declare it in top of JSP as follows:

<%@taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core"%>

and then iterate over the list as follows:

<c:forEach items="${allFestivals}" var="festival">
    <tr>
        <td>${festival.festivalName}</td>
        <td>${festival.location}</td>
        <td>${festival.startDate}</td>
        <td>${festival.endDate}</td>
        <td>${festival.URL}</td>
    </tr>
</c:forEach>

(beware of possible XSS attack holes, use <c:out> accordingly)

Don't forget to remove the <jsp:useBean> as it has no utter value here when you're using a servlet as model-and-view controller. It would only lead to confusion. See also our servlets wiki page. Further you would do yourself a favour to disable scriptlets by the following entry in web.xml so that you won't accidently use them:

<jsp-config>
    <jsp-property-group>
        <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
        <scripting-invalid>true</scripting-invalid>
    </jsp-property-group>
</jsp-config>

Which regular expression operator means 'Don't' match this character?

You can use negated character classes to exclude certain characters: for example [^abcde] will match anything but a,b,c,d,e characters.

Instead of specifying all the characters literally, you can use shorthands inside character classes: [\w] (lowercase) will match any "word character" (letter, numbers and underscore), [\W] (uppercase) will match anything but word characters; similarly, [\d] will match the 0-9 digits while [\D] matches anything but the 0-9 digits, and so on.

If you use PHP you can take a look at the regex character classes documentation.
