Check if space is in a string

# The following would be a very simple solution.

print("")
string = input("Enter your string :")
noofspacesinstring = 0
for counter in string:
    if counter == " ":
       noofspacesinstring += 1
if noofspacesinstring == 0:
   message = "Your string is a single word"
else:
   message = "Your string is not a single word"
print("")
print(message)
print("")

How do I programmatically click a link with javascript?

If you only want to change the current page address, you can do that by simply doing this in Javascript :

location.href = "http://www.example.com/test";

Get local IP address in Node.js

Here is a multi-IP address version of jhurliman's answer:

function getIPAddresses() {

    var ipAddresses = [];

    var interfaces = require('os').networkInterfaces();
    for (var devName in interfaces) {
        var iface = interfaces[devName];
        for (var i = 0; i < iface.length; i++) {
            var alias = iface[i];
            if (alias.family === 'IPv4' && alias.address !== '127.0.0.1' && !alias.internal) {
                ipAddresses.push(alias.address);
            }
        }
    }
    return ipAddresses;
}

Python error when trying to access list by index - "List indices must be integers, not str"

player['score'] is your problem. player is apparently a list which means that there is no 'score' element. Instead you would do something like:

name, score = player[0], player[1]
return name + ' ' + str(score)

Of course, you would have to know the list indices (those are the 0 and 1 in my example).

Something like player['score'] is allowed in python, but player would have to be a dict.

You can read more about both lists and dicts in the python documentation.

jQuery "on create" event for dynamically-created elements

instead of...

$(".class").click( function() {
    // do something
});

You can write...

$('body').on('click', '.class', function() {
    // do something
});

Get the current URL with JavaScript?

_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log('document.location', document.location.href);_x000D_
console.log('location.pathname',  window.location.pathname); // Returns path only_x000D_
console.log('location.href', window.location.href); // Returns full URL
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

How do I pass a list as a parameter in a stored procedure?

Azure DB, Azure Data WH and from SQL Server 2016, you can use STRING_SPLIT to achieve a similar result to what was described by @sparrow.

Recycling code from @sparrow

WHERE user_id IN (SELECT value FROM STRING_SPLIT( @user_id_list, ',')

Simple and effective way of accepting a list of values into a Stored Procedure

Jquery and HTML FormData returns "Uncaught TypeError: Illegal invocation"

Adding processData: false to the $.ajax options will fix this issue.

How to find NSDocumentDirectory in Swift?

Swift 3.0 and 4.0

Directly getting first element from an array will potentially cause exception if the path is not found. So calling first and then unwrap is the better solution

if let documentsPathString = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(.documentDirectory, .userDomainMask, true).first {
    //This gives you the string formed path
}

if let documentsPathURL = FileManager.default.urls(for: .documentDirectory, in: .userDomainMask).first {
    //This gives you the URL of the path
}

What is the most accurate way to retrieve a user's correct IP address in PHP?

We use:

/**
 * Get the customer's IP address.
 *
 * @return string
 */
public function getIpAddress() {
    if (!empty($_SERVER['HTTP_CLIENT_IP'])) {
        return $_SERVER['HTTP_CLIENT_IP'];
    } else if (!empty($_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR'])) {
        $ips = explode(',', $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR']);
        return trim($ips[count($ips) - 1]);
    } else {
        return $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
    }
}

The explode on HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR is because of weird issues we had detecting IP addresses when Squid was used.

How to hide console window in python?

If all you want to do is run your Python Script on a windows computer that has the Python Interpreter installed, converting the extension of your saved script from '.py' to '.pyw' should do the trick.

But if you're using py2exe to convert your script into a standalone application that would run on any windows machine, you will need to make the following changes to your 'setup.py' file.

The following example is of a simple python-GUI made using Tkinter:

from distutils.core import setup
import py2exe
setup (console = ['tkinter_example.pyw'],
       options = { 'py2exe' : {'packages':['Tkinter']}})

Change "console" in the code above to "windows"..

from distutils.core import setup
import py2exe
setup (windows = ['tkinter_example.pyw'],
       options = { 'py2exe' : {'packages':['Tkinter']}})

This will only open the Tkinter generated GUI and no console window.

When should static_cast, dynamic_cast, const_cast and reinterpret_cast be used?

(A lot of theoretical and conceptual explanation has been given above)

Below are some of the practical examples when I used static_cast, dynamic_cast, const_cast, reinterpret_cast.

(Also referes this to understand the explaination : http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/typecasting/)

static_cast :

OnEventData(void* pData)

{
  ......

  // pData is a void* pData,

  //  EventData is a structure e.g.
  //  typedef struct _EventData {
  //  std::string id;
  //  std:: string remote_id;
  //  } EventData;

  // On Some Situation a void pointer *pData
  // has been static_casted as
  // EventData* pointer

  EventData *evtdata = static_cast<EventData*>(pData);
  .....
}

dynamic_cast :

void DebugLog::OnMessage(Message *msg)
{
    static DebugMsgData *debug;
    static XYZMsgData *xyz;

    if(debug = dynamic_cast<DebugMsgData*>(msg->pdata)){
        // debug message
    }
    else if(xyz = dynamic_cast<XYZMsgData*>(msg->pdata)){
        // xyz message
    }
    else/* if( ... )*/{
        // ...
    }
}

const_cast :

// *Passwd declared as a const

const unsigned char *Passwd

// on some situation it require to remove its constness

const_cast<unsigned char*>(Passwd)

reinterpret_cast :

typedef unsigned short uint16;

// Read Bytes returns that 2 bytes got read.

bool ByteBuffer::ReadUInt16(uint16& val) {
  return ReadBytes(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&val), 2);
}

javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: Remote host closed connection during handshake during web service communicaiton

Java 7 defaults to TLS 1.0, which can cause this error when that protocol is not accepted. I ran into this problem with a Tomcat application and a server that would not accept TLS 1.0 connections any longer. I added

-Dhttps.protocols=TLSv1.1,TLSv1.2

to the Java options and that fixed it. (Tomcat was running Java 7.)

Select last row in MySQL

Almost every database table, there's an auto_increment column(generally id )

If you want the last of all the rows in the table,

SELECT columns FROM table ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 1;

OR

You can combine two queries into single query that looks like this:

SELECT columns FROM table WHERE id=(SELECT MAX(id) FROM table);

How to add Active Directory user group as login in SQL Server

You can use T-SQL:

use master
GO
CREATE LOGIN [NT AUTHORITY\LOCALSERVICE] FROM WINDOWS WITH
DEFAULT_DATABASE=yourDbName
GO
CREATE LOGIN [NT AUTHORITY\NETWORKSERVICE] FROM WINDOWS WITH
DEFAULT_DATABASE=yourDbName

I use this as a part of restore from production server to testing machine:

USE master
GO
ALTER DATABASE yourDbName SET OFFLINE WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE
RESTORE DATABASE yourDbName FROM DISK = 'd:\DropBox\backup\myDB.bak'
ALTER DATABASE yourDbName SET ONLINE
GO
CREATE LOGIN [NT AUTHORITY\LOCALSERVICE] FROM WINDOWS WITH
DEFAULT_DATABASE=yourDbName
GO
CREATE LOGIN [NT AUTHORITY\NETWORKSERVICE] FROM WINDOWS WITH
DEFAULT_DATABASE=yourDbName
GO

You will need to use localized name of services in case of German or French Windows, see How to create a SQL Server login for a service account on a non-English Windows?

What's the best way to get the last element of an array without deleting it?

Short and sweet.

I came up with solution to remove error message and preserve one-liner form and efficient performance:

$lastEl = array_values(array_slice($array, -1))[0];

-- previous solution

$lastEl = array_pop((array_slice($array, -1)));

Note: The extra parentheses are needed to avoid a PHP Strict standards: Only variables should be passed by reference.

Why would a "java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out" exception occur when URL is up?

Connection timeouts (assuming a local network and several client machines) typically result from

a) some kind of firewall on the way that simply eats the packets without telling the sender things like "No Route to host"

b) packet loss due to wrong network configuration or line overload

c) too many requests overloading the server

d) a small number of simultaneously available threads/processes on the server which leads to all of them being taken. This happens especially with requests that take a long time to run and may combine with c).

Hope this helps.

What does %>% mean in R

The infix operator %>% is not part of base R, but is in fact defined by the package magrittr (CRAN) and is heavily used by dplyr (CRAN).

It works like a pipe, hence the reference to Magritte's famous painting The Treachery of Images.

What the function does is to pass the left hand side of the operator to the first argument of the right hand side of the operator. In the following example, the data frame iris gets passed to head():

library(magrittr)
iris %>% head()
  Sepal.Length Sepal.Width Petal.Length Petal.Width Species
1          5.1         3.5          1.4         0.2  setosa
2          4.9         3.0          1.4         0.2  setosa
3          4.7         3.2          1.3         0.2  setosa
4          4.6         3.1          1.5         0.2  setosa
5          5.0         3.6          1.4         0.2  setosa
6          5.4         3.9          1.7         0.4  setosa

Thus, iris %>% head() is equivalent to head(iris).

Often, %>% is called multiple times to "chain" functions together, which accomplishes the same result as nesting. For example in the chain below, iris is passed to head(), then the result of that is passed to summary().

iris %>% head() %>% summary()

Thus iris %>% head() %>% summary() is equivalent to summary(head(iris)). Some people prefer chaining to nesting because the functions applied can be read from left to right rather than from inside out.

Javascript change color of text and background to input value

Things seems a little confused in the code in your question, so I am going to give you an example of what I think you are try to do.

First considerations are about mixing HTML, Javascript and CSS:

Why is using onClick() in HTML a bad practice?

Unobtrusive Javascript

Inline Styles vs Classes

I will be removing inline content and splitting these into their appropriate files.

Next, I am going to go with the "click" event and displose of the "change" event, as it is not clear that you want or need both.

Your function changeBackground sets both the backround color and the text color to the same value (your text will not be seen), so I am caching the color value as we don't need to look it up in the DOM twice.

CSS

#TheForm {
    margin-left: 396px;
}
#submitColor {
    margin-left: 48px;
    margin-top: 5px;
}

HTML

<form id="TheForm">
    <input id="color" type="text" />
    <br/>
    <input id="submitColor" value="Submit" type="button" />
</form>
<span id="coltext">This text should have the same color as you put in the text box</span>

Javascript

function changeBackground() {
    var color = document.getElementById("color").value; // cached

    // The working function for changing background color.
    document.bgColor = color;

    // The code I'd like to use for changing the text simultaneously - however it does not work.
    document.getElementById("coltext").style.color = color;
}

document.getElementById("submitColor").addEventListener("click", changeBackground, false);

Color Values

CSS colors are defined using a hexadecimal (hex) notation for the combination of Red, Green, and Blue color values (RGB). The lowest value that can be given to one of the light sources is 0 (hex 00). The highest value is 255 (hex FF).

Hex values are written as 3 double digit numbers, starting with a # sign.

Update: as pointed out by @Ian

Hex can be either 3 or 6 characters long

Source: W3C

Numerical color values

The format of an RGB value in hexadecimal notation is a ‘#’ immediately followed by either three or six hexadecimal characters. The three-digit RGB notation (#rgb) is converted into six-digit form (#rrggbb) by replicating digits, not by adding zeros. For example, #fb0 expands to #ffbb00. This ensures that white (#ffffff) can be specified with the short notation (#fff) and removes any dependencies on the color depth of the display.

Here is an alternative function that will check that your input is a valid CSS Hex Color, it will set the text color only or throw an alert if it is not valid.

For regex testing, I will use this pattern

/^#(?:[0-9a-f]{3}){1,2}$/i

but if you were regex matching and wanted to break the numbers into groups then you would require a different pattern

function changeBackground() {
    var color = document.getElementById("color").value.trim(),
        rxValidHex = /^#(?:[0-9a-f]{3}){1,2}$/i;

    if (rxValidHex.test(color)) {
        document.getElementById("coltext").style.color = color;
    } else {
        alert("Invalid CSS Hex Color");
    }
}

document.getElementById("submitColor").addEventListener("click", changeBackground, false);

On jsfiddle

Here is a further modification that will allow colours by name along with by hex.

function changeBackground() {
    var names = ["AliceBlue", "AntiqueWhite", "Aqua", "Aquamarine", "Azure", "Beige", "Bisque", "Black", "BlanchedAlmond", "Blue", "BlueViolet", "Brown", "BurlyWood", "CadetBlue", "Chartreuse", "Chocolate", "Coral", "CornflowerBlue", "Cornsilk", "Crimson", "Cyan", "DarkBlue", "DarkCyan", "DarkGoldenRod", "DarkGray", "DarkGrey", "DarkGreen", "DarkKhaki", "DarkMagenta", "DarkOliveGreen", "Darkorange", "DarkOrchid", "DarkRed", "DarkSalmon", "DarkSeaGreen", "DarkSlateBlue", "DarkSlateGray", "DarkSlateGrey", "DarkTurquoise", "DarkViolet", "DeepPink", "DeepSkyBlue", "DimGray", "DimGrey", "DodgerBlue", "FireBrick", "FloralWhite", "ForestGreen", "Fuchsia", "Gainsboro", "GhostWhite", "Gold", "GoldenRod", "Gray", "Grey", "Green", "GreenYellow", "HoneyDew", "HotPink", "IndianRed", "Indigo", "Ivory", "Khaki", "Lavender", "LavenderBlush", "LawnGreen", "LemonChiffon", "LightBlue", "LightCoral", "LightCyan", "LightGoldenRodYellow", "LightGray", "LightGrey", "LightGreen", "LightPink", "LightSalmon", "LightSeaGreen", "LightSkyBlue", "LightSlateGray", "LightSlateGrey", "LightSteelBlue", "LightYellow", "Lime", "LimeGreen", "Linen", "Magenta", "Maroon", "MediumAquaMarine", "MediumBlue", "MediumOrchid", "MediumPurple", "MediumSeaGreen", "MediumSlateBlue", "MediumSpringGreen", "MediumTurquoise", "MediumVioletRed", "MidnightBlue", "MintCream", "MistyRose", "Moccasin", "NavajoWhite", "Navy", "OldLace", "Olive", "OliveDrab", "Orange", "OrangeRed", "Orchid", "PaleGoldenRod", "PaleGreen", "PaleTurquoise", "PaleVioletRed", "PapayaWhip", "PeachPuff", "Peru", "Pink", "Plum", "PowderBlue", "Purple", "Red", "RosyBrown", "RoyalBlue", "SaddleBrown", "Salmon", "SandyBrown", "SeaGreen", "SeaShell", "Sienna", "Silver", "SkyBlue", "SlateBlue", "SlateGray", "SlateGrey", "Snow", "SpringGreen", "SteelBlue", "Tan", "Teal", "Thistle", "Tomato", "Turquoise", "Violet", "Wheat", "White", "WhiteSmoke", "Yellow", "YellowGreen"],
        color = document.getElementById("color").value.trim(),
        rxValidHex = /^#(?:[0-9a-f]{3}){1,2}$/i,
        formattedName = color.charAt(0).toUpperCase() + color.slice(1).toLowerCase();

How to calculate percentage when old value is ZERO

There are a couple of things to consider.

If your growth is 0 for that month, it'd be 0 in change from 0. So it is meaningful in that sense. You could adjust by adding a small number, so it'd be change from 0.1 to 0.1. Then change and percentage change would be 0 and 0%.

Then to think about case where you change from 0 to 20. Such practice would result in massive reporting issues. Depending on what small number you choose to add, eg if you use 0.1 or 0.001, your percentage change would be 100 fold difference. So there is a problem with such practice.

It is possible however if you have a change from 1 to 20, then the %change would be 19/1=1900%. Here the % change doesn't make too much sense when you start off so low, it becomes very sensitive to any change and may skew your results if other data points are on different scale.

So it is important to understand your data, and in this case, how frequent you encounter 0s and extreme numbers in your data.

How can I display just a portion of an image in HTML/CSS?

One way to do it is to set the image you want to display as a background in a container (td, div, span etc) and then adjust background-position to get the sprite you want.

OS X Terminal Colors

If you are using tcsh, then edit your ~/.cshrc file to include the lines:

setenv CLICOLOR 1
setenv LSCOLORS dxfxcxdxbxegedabagacad

Where, like Martin says, LSCOLORS specifies the color scheme you want to use.

In c, in bool, true == 1 and false == 0?

You neglected to say which version of C you are concerned about. Let's assume it's this one:

http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg14/www/docs/n1570.pdf

As you can see by reading the specification, the standard definitions of true and false are 1 and 0, yes.

If your question is about a different version of C, or about non-standard definitions for true and false, then ask a more specific question.

What is the Swift equivalent of isEqualToString in Objective-C?

I addition to @JJSaccolo answer, you can create custom equals method as new String extension like:

extension String {
     func isEqualToString(find: String) -> Bool {
        return String(format: self) == find
    }
}

And usage:

let a = "abc"
let b = "abc"

if a.isEqualToString(b) {
     println("Equals")
}

For sure original operator == might be better (works like in Javascript) but for me isEqual method gives some code clearness that we compare Strings

Removing Spaces from a String in C?

if you are still interested, this function removes spaces from the beginning of the string, and I just had it working in my code:

void removeSpaces(char *str1)
{
    char *str2;
    str2=str1;
    while (*str2==' ') str2++;
    if (str2!=str1) memmove(str1,str2,strlen(str2)+1);
}

How do I solve this "Cannot read property 'appendChild' of null" error?

For all those facing a similar issue, I came across this same issue when i was trying to run a particular code snippet, shown below.

<html>
    <head>
        <script>
                var div, container = document.getElementById("container")
                for(var i=0;i<5;i++){
                    div = document.createElement("div");
                    div.onclick = function() {
                        alert("This is a box #"+i);
                    };
                    container.appendChild(div);
                }
            </script>

    </head>
    <body>
        <div id="container"></div>
    </body>
 </html>

https://codepen.io/pcwanderer/pen/MMEREr

Looking at the error in the console for the above code.

Since the document.getElementById is returning a null and as null does not have a attribute named appendChild, therefore a error is thrown. To solve the issue see the code below.

        #container{

                        alert("This is a box #"+i);
                    };
                    container.appendChild(div);
                }
            </script>

Preserve line breaks in angularjs

the css solution works, however you do not really get control on the styling. In my case I wanted a bit more space after the line break. Here is a directive I created to handle this (typescript):

function preDirective(): angular.IDirective {
    return {
        restrict: 'C',
        priority: 450,
        link: (scope, el, attr, ctrl) => {
            scope.$watch(
                () => el[0].innerHTML,
                (newVal) => {
                    let lineBreakIndex = newVal.indexOf('\n');
                    if (lineBreakIndex > -1 && lineBreakIndex !== newVal.length - 1 && newVal.substr(lineBreakIndex + 1, 4) != '</p>') {
                        let newHtml = `<p>${replaceAll(el[0].innerHTML, '\n\n', '\n').split('\n').join('</p><p>')}</p>`;
                        el[0].innerHTML = newHtml;
                    }
                }
            )
        }
    };

    function replaceAll(str, find, replace) {
        return str.replace(new RegExp(escapeRegExp(find), 'g'), replace);
    }

    function escapeRegExp(str) {
        return str.replace(/([.*+?^=!:${}()|\[\]\/\\])/g, "\\$1");
    }
}

angular.module('app').directive('pre', preDirective);

Use:

<div class="pre">{{item.description}}</div>

All it does is wraps each part of the text in to a <p> tag. After that you can style it however you want.

ArrayBuffer to base64 encoded string

This works fine for me:

var base64String = btoa(String.fromCharCode.apply(null, new Uint8Array(arrayBuffer)));

In ES6, the syntax is a little simpler:

let base64String = btoa(String.fromCharCode(...new Uint8Array(arrayBuffer)));

As pointed out in the comments, this method may result in a runtime error in some browsers when the ArrayBuffer is large. The exact size limit is implementation dependent in any case.

Simplest way to form a union of two lists

Using LINQ's Union

Enumerable.Union(ListA,ListB);

How to add a new column to an existing sheet and name it?

For your question as asked

Columns(3).Insert
Range("c1:c4") = Application.Transpose(Array("Loc", "uk", "us", "nj"))

If you had a way of automatically looking up the data (ie matching uk against employer id) then you could do that in VBA

Split string and get first value only

These are the two options I managed to build, not having the luxury of working with var type, nor with additional variables on the line:

string f = "aS.".Substring(0, "aS.".IndexOf("S"));
Console.WriteLine(f);

string s = "aS.".Split("S".ToCharArray(),StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries)[0];
Console.WriteLine(s);

This is what it gets:

Selecting only first-level elements in jquery

Once you have the initial ul, you can use the children() method, which will only consider the immediate children of the element. As @activa points out, one way to easily select the root element is to give it a class or an id. The following assumes you have a root ul with id root.

$('ul#root').children('li');

Fastest way to duplicate an array in JavaScript - slice vs. 'for' loop

There is a much cleaner solution:

var srcArray = [1, 2, 3];
var clonedArray = srcArray.length === 1 ? [srcArray[0]] : Array.apply(this, srcArray);

The length check is required, because the Array constructor behaves differently when it is called with exactly one argument.

Converting a Uniform Distribution to a Normal Distribution

The Ziggurat algorithm is pretty efficient for this, although the Box-Muller transform is easier to implement from scratch (and not crazy slow).

"break;" out of "if" statement?

As already mentioned that, break-statement works only with switches and loops. Here is another way to achieve what is being asked. I am reproducing https://stackoverflow.com/a/257421/1188057 as nobody else mentioned it. It's just a trick involving the do-while loop.

do {
  // do something
  if (error) {
    break;
  }
  // do something else
  if (error) {
    break;
  }
  // etc..
} while (0);

Though I would prefer the use of goto-statement.

How to search in array of object in mongodb

The right way is:

db.users.find({awards: {$elemMatch: {award:'National Medal', year:1975}}})

$elemMatch allows you to match more than one component within the same array element.

Without $elemMatch mongo will look for users with National Medal in some year and some award in 1975s, but not for users with National Medal in 1975.

See MongoDB $elemMatch Documentation for more info. See Read Operations Documentation for more information about querying documents with arrays.

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError in junit

If you have more than one version of java, it may interfere with your program.

I suggest you download JCreator.

When you do, click configure, options, and JDK Profiles. Delete the old versions of Java from the list. Then click the play button. Your program should appear.

If it doesn't, press ctrl+alt+O and then press the play button again.

Default instance name of SQL Server Express

When installing SQL Express, you'll usually get a named instance called SQLExpress, which as others have said you can connect to with localhost\SQLExpress.

If you're looking to get a 'default' instance, which doesn't have a name, you can do that as well. If you put MSSQLServer as the name when installing, it will create a default instance which you can connect to by just specifying 'localhost'.

See here for details... MSDN Instance Configuration

How do I set multipart in axios with react?

If you are sending alphanumeric data try changing

'Content-Type': 'multipart/form-data'

to

'Content-Type': 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded'

If you are sending non-alphanumeric data try to remove 'Content-Type' at all.

If it still does not work, consider trying request-promise (at least to test whether it is really axios problem or not)

How to have an auto incrementing version number (Visual Studio)?

If you add an AssemblyInfo class to your project and amend the AssemblyVersion attribute to end with an asterisk, for example:

[assembly: AssemblyVersion("2.10.*")]

Visual studio will increment the final number for you according to these rules (thanks galets, I had that completely wrong!)

To reference this version in code, so you can display it to the user, you use reflection. For example,

Version version = System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetName().Version;
DateTime buildDate = new DateTime(2000, 1, 1)
                        .AddDays(version.Build).AddSeconds(version.Revision * 2);
string displayableVersion = $"{version} ({buildDate})";

Three important gotchas that you should know

From @ashes999:

It's also worth noting that if both AssemblyVersion and AssemblyFileVersion are specified, you won't see this on your .exe.

From @BrainSlugs83:

Setting only the 4th number to be * can be bad, as the version won't always increment. The 3rd number is the number of days since the year 2000, and the 4th number is the number of seconds since midnight (divided by 2) [IT IS NOT RANDOM]. So if you built the solution late in a day one day, and early in a day the next day, the later build would have an earlier version number. I recommend always using X.Y.* instead of X.Y.Z.* because your version number will ALWAYS increase this way.

Newer versions of Visual Studio give this error:

(this thread begun in 2009)

The specified version string contains wildcards, which are not compatible with determinism. Either remove wildcards from the version string, or disable determinism for this compilation.

See this SO answer which explains how to remove determinism (https://stackoverflow.com/a/58101474/1555612)

Allowing Java to use an untrusted certificate for SSL/HTTPS connection

Another option is to get a ".pem" (public key) file for that particular server, and install it locally into the heart of your JRE's "cacerts" file (use the keytool helper application), then it will be able to download from that server without complaint, without compromising the entire SSL structure of your running JVM and enabling download from other unknown cert servers...

How do I read all classes from a Java package in the classpath?

Back when applets were common place, one might have a URL on the classpath. When the classloader required a class, it would search all the locations on the classpath, including http resources. Because you can have things like URLs and directories on the classpath, there is no easy way to get a definitive list of the classes.

However, you can get pretty close. Some of the Spring libraries are doing this now. You can get all the jar's on the classpath, and open them up like files. You can then take this list of files, and create a data structure containing your classes.

SQL Server 2012 column identity increment jumping from 6 to 1000+ on 7th entry

This is all perfectly normal. Microsoft added sequences in SQL Server 2012, finally, i might add and changed the way identity keys are generated. Have a look here for some explanation.

If you want to have the old behaviour, you can:

  1. use trace flag 272 - this will cause a log record to be generated for each generated identity value. The performance of identity generation may be impacted by turning on this trace flag.
  2. use a sequence generator with the NO CACHE setting (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff878091.aspx)

Stop form from submitting , Using Jquery

Again, AJAX is async. So the showMsg function will be called only after success response from the server.. and the form submit event will not wait until AJAX success.

Move the e.preventDefault(); as first line in the click handler.

$("form").submit(function (e) {
      e.preventDefault(); // this will prevent from submitting the form.
      ...

See below code,

I want it to be allowed HasJobInProgress == False

$(document).ready(function () {
    $("form").submit(function (e) {
        e.preventDefault(); //prevent default form submit
        $.ajax({
            url: '@Url.Action("HasJobInProgress", "ClientChoices")/',
            data: { id: '@Model.ClientId' },
            success: function (data) {
                showMsg(data);
            },
            cache: false
        });
    });
});
$("#cancelButton").click(function () {
    window.location = '@Url.Action("list", "default", new { clientId = Model.ClientId })';
});
$("[type=text]").focus(function () {
    $(this).select();
});
function showMsg(hasCurrentJob) {
    if (hasCurrentJob == "True") {
        alert("The current clients has a job in progress. No changes can be saved until current job completes");
        return false;
    } else {
       $("form").unbind('submit').submit();

How to convert an array to object in PHP?

I also had this issue, but I noticed that json_decode converts JSON array to object.

So, I came about my solution by using json_encode($PHPArray) which returns A JSON string of object, then I decoded the string with Json_decode($string) and it would return a perfectly structured object. Shorthand

$object = json_decode(json_encode($array));

Or

$jsonString = json_encode($array);
$object = json_decode($jsonString);

Difference between a User and a Login in SQL Server

I think there is a really good MSDN blog post about this topic by Laurentiu Cristofor:

The first important thing that needs to be understood about SQL Server security is that there are two security realms involved - the server and the database. The server realm encompasses multiple database realms. All work is done in the context of some database, but to get to do the work, one needs to first have access to the server and then to have access to the database.

Access to the server is granted via logins. There are two main categories of logins: SQL Server authenticated logins and Windows authenticated logins. I will usually refer to these using the shorter names of SQL logins and Windows logins. Windows authenticated logins can either be logins mapped to Windows users or logins mapped to Windows groups. So, to be able to connect to the server, one must have access via one of these types or logins - logins provide access to the server realm.

But logins are not enough, because work is usually done in a database and databases are separate realms. Access to databases is granted via users.

Users are mapped to logins and the mapping is expressed by the SID property of logins and users. A login maps to a user in a database if their SID values are identical. Depending on the type of login, we can therefore have a categorization of users that mimics the above categorization for logins; so, we have SQL users and Windows users and the latter category consists of users mapped to Windows user logins and of users mapped to Windows group logins.

Let's take a step back for a quick overview: a login provides access to the server and to further get access to a database, a user mapped to the login must exist in the database.

Is there a developers api for craigslist.org

Ultimately no. You can query for listings with a search string from an RSS feed such as this:

http://YOURCITY.craigslist.org/search/sss?format=rss&query=SearchString

As far as posting, craiglist has not opened their API. However, this SO Question may shed some light and a possible solution - although not a very reliable one.

Converting dict to OrderedDict

If you can't edit this part of code where your dict was defined you can still order it at any point in any way you want, like this:

from collections import OrderedDict

order_of_keys = ["key1", "key2", "key3", "key4", "key5"]
list_of_tuples = [(key, your_dict[key]) for key in order_of_keys]
your_dict = OrderedDict(list_of_tuples)

How to overload __init__ method based on argument type?

My preferred solution is:

class MyClass:
    _data = []
    __init__(self,data=None):
        # do init stuff
        if not data: return
        self._data = list(data) # list() copies the list, instead of pointing to it.

Then invoke it with either MyClass() or MyClass([1,2,3]).

Hope that helps. Happy Coding!

HTML Button : Navigate to Other Page - Different Approaches

I use method 3 because it's the most understandable for others (whenever you see an <a> tag, you know it's a link) and when you are part of a team, you have to make simple things ;).

And finally I don't think it's useful and efficient to use JS simply to navigate to an other page.

Save range to variable

Just to clarify, there is a big difference between these two actions, as suggested by Jean-François Corbett.

One action is to copy / load the actual data FROM the Range("A2:A9") INTO a Variant Array called vArray (Changed to avoid confusion between Variant Array and Sheet both called Src):

vArray = Sheets("Src").Range("A2:A9").Value

while the other simply sets up a Range variable (SrcRange) with the ADDRESS of the range Sheets("Src").Range("A2:A9"):

Set SrcRange = Sheets("Src").Range("A2:A9")

In this case, the data is not copied, and remains where it is, but can now be accessed in much the same way as an Array. That is often perfectly adequate, but if you need to repeatedly access, test or calculate with that data, loading it into an Array first will be MUCH faster.

For example, say you want to check a "database" (large sheet) against a list of known Suburbs and Postcodes. Both sets of data are in separate sheets, but if you want it to run fast, load the suburbs and postcodes into an Array (lives in memory), then run through each line of the main database, testing against the array data. This will be much faster than if you access both from their original sheets.

How to add custom validation to an AngularJS form?

Update:

Improved and simplified version of previous directive (one instead of two) with same functionality:

.directive('myTestExpression', ['$parse', function ($parse) {
    return {
        restrict: 'A',
        require: 'ngModel',
        link: function (scope, element, attrs, ctrl) {
            var expr = attrs.myTestExpression;
            var watches = attrs.myTestExpressionWatch;

            ctrl.$validators.mytestexpression = function (modelValue, viewValue) {
                return expr == undefined || (angular.isString(expr) && expr.length < 1) || $parse(expr)(scope, { $model: modelValue, $view: viewValue }) === true;
            };

            if (angular.isString(watches)) {
                angular.forEach(watches.split(",").filter(function (n) { return !!n; }), function (n) {
                    scope.$watch(n, function () {
                        ctrl.$validate();
                    });
                });
            }
        }
    };
}])

Example usage:

<input ng-model="price1"
       my-test-expression="$model > 0"
       my-test-expression-watch="price2,someOtherWatchedPrice" />
<input ng-model="price2"
       my-test-expression="$model > 10"
       my-test-expression-watch="price1"
       required />

Result: Mutually dependent test expressions where validators are executed on change of other's directive model and current model.

Test expression has local $model variable which you should use to compare it to other variables.

Previously:

I've made an attempt to improve @Plantface code by adding extra directive. This extra directive very useful if our expression needs to be executed when changes are made in more than one ngModel variables.

.directive('ensureExpression', ['$parse', function($parse) {
    return {
        restrict: 'A',
        require: 'ngModel',
        controller: function () { },
        scope: true,
        link: function (scope, element, attrs, ngModelCtrl) {
            scope.validate = function () {
                var booleanResult = $parse(attrs.ensureExpression)(scope);
                ngModelCtrl.$setValidity('expression', booleanResult);
            };

            scope.$watch(attrs.ngModel, function(value) {
                scope.validate();
            });
        }
    };
}])

.directive('ensureWatch', ['$parse', function ($parse) {
    return {
        restrict: 'A',
        require: 'ensureExpression',
        link: function (scope, element, attrs, ctrl) {
            angular.forEach(attrs.ensureWatch.split(",").filter(function (n) { return !!n; }), function (n) {
                scope.$watch(n, function () {
                    scope.validate();
                });
            });
        }
    };
}])

Example how to use it to make cross validated fields:

<input name="price1"
       ng-model="price1"
       ensure-expression="price1 > price2"
       ensure-watch="price2" />
<input name="price2"
       ng-model="price2"
       ensure-expression="price2 > price3"
       ensure-watch="price3" />
<input name="price3"
       ng-model="price3"
       ensure-expression="price3 > price1 && price3 > price2"
       ensure-watch="price1,price2" />

ensure-expression is executed to validate model when ng-model or any of ensure-watch variables is changed.

Evenly distributing n points on a sphere

This answer is based on the same 'theory' that is outlined well by this answer

I'm adding this answer as:
-- None of the other options fit the 'uniformity' need 'spot-on' (or not obviously-clearly so). (Noting to get the planet like distribution looking behavior particurally wanted in the original ask, you just reject from the finite list of the k uniformly created points at random (random wrt the index count in the k items back).)
--The closest other impl forced you to decide the 'N' by 'angular axis', vs. just 'one value of N' across both angular axis values ( which at low counts of N is very tricky to know what may, or may not matter (e.g. you want '5' points -- have fun ) )
--Furthermore, it's very hard to 'grok' how to differentiate between the other options without any imagery, so here's what this option looks like (below), and the ready-to-run implementation that goes with it.

How to implement and do OCR in a C# project?

If anyone is looking into this, I've been trying different options and the following approach yields very good results. The following are the steps to get a working example:

  1. Add .NET Wrapper for tesseract to your project. It can be added via NuGet package Install-Package Tesseract(https://github.com/charlesw/tesseract).
  2. Go to the Downloads section of the official Tesseract project (https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/ EDIT: It's now located here: https://github.com/tesseract-ocr/langdata).
  3. Download the preferred language data, example: tesseract-ocr-3.02.eng.tar.gz English language data for Tesseract 3.02.
  4. Create tessdata directory in your project and place the language data files in it.
  5. Go to Properties of the newly added files and set them to copy on build.
  6. Add a reference to System.Drawing.
  7. From .NET Wrapper repository, in the Samples directory copy the sample phototest.tif file into your project directory and set it to copy on build.
  8. Create the following two files in your project (just to get started):

PHP regular expression - filter number only

To remove anything that is not a number:

$output = preg_replace('/[^0-9]/', '', $input);

Explanation:

  • [0-9] matches any number between 0 and 9 inclusively.
  • ^ negates a [] pattern.
  • So, [^0-9] matches anything that is not a number, and since we're using preg_replace, they will be replaced by nothing '' (second argument of preg_replace).

Throwing multiple exceptions in a method of an interface in java

I think you are asking for something like the code below:

public interface A
{
    void foo()
        throws AException;
}

public class B
    implements A
{
    @Overrides
    public void foo()
        throws AException,
               BException
    {
    }
}

This will not work unless BException is a subclass of AException. When you override a method you must conform to the signature that the parent provides, and exceptions are part of the signature.

The solution is to declare the the interface also throws a BException.

The reason for this is you do not want code like:

public class Main
{
    public static void main(final String[] argv)
    {
        A a;

        a = new B();

        try
        {
            a.foo();
        }
        catch(final AException ex)
        {
        }
        // compiler will not let you write a catch BException if the A interface
        // doesn't say that it is thrown.
    }
}

What would happen if B::foo threw a BException? The program would have to exit as there could be no catch for it. To avoid situations like this child classes cannot alter the types of exceptions thrown (except that they can remove exceptions from the list).

Eclipse gives “Java was started but returned exit code 13”

I installed 32 bits ADT and It works fine without changing my configuration (Windows 7 64 bits, Java 6 32 bits).

How can I parse a YAML file from a Linux shell script?

Hard to say because it depends on what you want the parser to extract from your YAML document. For simple cases, you might be able to use grep, cut, awk etc. For more complex parsing you would need to use a full-blown parsing library such as Python's PyYAML or YAML::Perl.

How to make GREP select only numeric values?

grep will print any lines matching the pattern you provide. If you only want to print the part of the line that matches the pattern, you can pass the -o option:

-o, --only-matching Print only the matched (non-empty) parts of a matching line, with each such part on a separate output line.

Like this:

echo 'Here is a line mentioning 99% somewhere' | grep -o '[0-9]+'

Git: list only "untracked" files (also, custom commands)

All previous answers which I checked would list the files to be committed, too. Here is a simple and easy solution that only lists files which are not yet in the repo and not subject to .gitignore.

git status --porcelain | awk '/^\?\?/ { print $2; }'

or

git status --porcelain | grep -v '\?\?'

How to find char in string and get all the indexes?

I would go with Lev, but it's worth pointing out that if you end up with more complex searches that using re.finditer may be worth bearing in mind (but re's often cause more trouble than worth - but sometimes handy to know)

test = "ooottat"
[ (i.start(), i.end()) for i in re.finditer('o', test)]
# [(0, 1), (1, 2), (2, 3)]

[ (i.start(), i.end()) for i in re.finditer('o+', test)]
# [(0, 3)]

Accessing Websites through a Different Port?

If your question is about IIS(or other server) configuration - yes, it's possible. All you need is to create ports mapping under your Default Site or Virtual Directory and assign specific ports to the site you need. For example it is sometimes very useful for web services, when default port is assigned to some UI front-end and you want to assign service to the same address but with different port.

What's the difference between an Angular component and module

A module in Angular 2 is something which is made from components, directives, services etc. One or many modules combine to make an Application. Modules breakup application into logical pieces of code. Each module performs a single task.

Components in Angular 2 are classes where you write your logic for the page you want to display. Components control the view (html). Components communicate with other components and services.

jQuery to serialize only elements within a div

You can improve the speed of your code if you restrict the items jQuery will look at.

Use the selector :input instead of * to achieve it.

$('#divId :input').serialize()

This will make your code faster because the list of items is shorter.

Is it possible to display inline images from html in an Android TextView?

You could also write your own parser to pull the URL of all the images and then dynamically create new imageviews and pass in the urls.

Accessing an SQLite Database in Swift

Configure your Swift project to handle SQLite C calls:

Create bridging header file to the project. See the Importing Objective-C into Swift section of the Using Swift with Cocoa and Objective-C. This bridging header should import sqlite3.h:

Add the libsqlite3.0.dylib to your project. See Apple's documentation regarding adding library/framework to one's project.

in_array multiple values

Intersect the targets with the haystack and make sure the intersection is precisely equal to the targets:

$haystack = array(...);

$target = array('foo', 'bar');

if(count(array_intersect($haystack, $target)) == count($target)){
    // all of $target is in $haystack
}

Note that you only need to verify the size of the resulting intersection is the same size as the array of target values to say that $haystack is a superset of $target.

To verify that at least one value in $target is also in $haystack, you can do this check:

 if(count(array_intersect($haystack, $target)) > 0){
     // at least one of $target is in $haystack
 }

Generate random numbers with a given (numerical) distribution

Make a list of items, based on their weights:

items = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
probabilities= [0.1, 0.05, 0.05, 0.2, 0.4, 0.2]
# if the list of probs is normalized (sum(probs) == 1), omit this part
prob = sum(probabilities) # find sum of probs, to normalize them
c = (1.0)/prob # a multiplier to make a list of normalized probs
probabilities = map(lambda x: c*x, probabilities)
print probabilities

ml = max(probabilities, key=lambda x: len(str(x)) - str(x).find('.'))
ml = len(str(ml)) - str(ml).find('.') -1
amounts = [ int(x*(10**ml)) for x in probabilities]
itemsList = list()
for i in range(0, len(items)): # iterate through original items
  itemsList += items[i:i+1]*amounts[i]

# choose from itemsList randomly
print itemsList

An optimization may be to normalize amounts by the greatest common divisor, to make the target list smaller.

Also, this might be interesting.

What is "overhead"?

It's the resources required to set up an operation. It might seem unrelated, but necessary.

It's like when you need to go somewhere, you might need a car. But, it would be a lot of overhead to get a car to drive down the street, so you might want to walk. However, the overhead would be worth it if you were going across the country.

In computer science, sometimes we use cars to go down the street because we don't have a better way, or it's not worth our time to "learn how to walk".

Automatically resize jQuery UI dialog to the width of the content loaded by ajax

Adding to Vladimir Kornea's answer.

I wanted a way to set the width unless the screen was too small, then a dynamic width. Not truly "responsive" bit works well for most cases.

, 'open': function(){
   var resposive_width = ($( window ).width() > 640) ? 640 : ($( window ).width() - 20);
   $(this).dialog('option', 'width', resposive_width)
 }

Background image jumps when address bar hides iOS/Android/Mobile Chrome

Simple answer if your background allows, why not set background-size: to something just covering device width with media queries and use alongside the :after position: fixed; hack here.

IE: background-size: 901px; for any screens <900px? Not perfect or responsive but worked a charm for me on mobile <480px as i'm using an abstract BG.

How to echo or print an array in PHP?

You can use print_r, var_dump and var_export funcations of php:

print_r: Convert into human readble form

<?php
echo "<pre>";
 print_r($results);
echo "</pre>";
?>

var_dump(): will show you the type of the thing as well as what's in it.

var_dump($results);

foreach loop: using for each loop you can iterate each and every value of an array.

foreach($results['data'] as $result) {
    echo $result['type'].'<br>';
}

Should a function have only one return statement?

I would say you should have as many as required, or any that make the code cleaner (such as guard clauses).

I have personally never heard/seen any "best practices" say that you should have only one return statement.

For the most part, I tend to exit a function as soon as possible based on a logic path (guard clauses are an excellent example of this).

What's the difference between `raw_input()` and `input()` in Python 3?

Python 2:

  • raw_input() takes exactly what the user typed and passes it back as a string.

  • input() first takes the raw_input() and then performs an eval() on it as well.

The main difference is that input() expects a syntactically correct python statement where raw_input() does not.

Python 3:

  • raw_input() was renamed to input() so now input() returns the exact string.
  • Old input() was removed.

If you want to use the old input(), meaning you need to evaluate a user input as a python statement, you have to do it manually by using eval(input()).

How do I mock a service that returns promise in AngularJS Jasmine unit test?

You can use a stubbing library like sinon to mock your service. You can then return $q.when() as your promise. If your scope object's value comes from the promise result, you will need to call scope.$root.$digest().

var scope, controller, datacontextMock, customer;
  beforeEach(function () {
        module('app');
        inject(function ($rootScope, $controller,common, datacontext) {
            scope = $rootScope.$new();
            var $q = common.$q;
            datacontextMock = sinon.stub(datacontext);
            customer = {id:1};
           datacontextMock.customer.returns($q.when(customer));

            controller = $controller('Index', { $scope: scope });

        })
    });

    it('customer id to be 1.', function () {

            scope.$root.$digest();
            expect(controller.customer.id).toBe(1);

    });

In what cases will HTTP_REFERER be empty

HTTP_REFERER - sent by the browser, stating the last page the browser viewed!

If you trusting [HTTP_REFERER] for any reason that is important, you should not, since it can be faked easily:

  1. Some browsers limit access to not allow HTTP_REFERER to be passed
  2. Type a address in the address bar will not pass the HTTP_REFERER
  3. open a new browser window will not pass the HTTP_REFERER, because HTTP_REFERER = NULL
  4. has some browser addon that blocks it for privacy reasons. Some firewalls and AVs do to.

Try this firefox extension, you'll be able to set any headers you want:

@Master of Celebration:

Firefox:

extensions: refspoof, refontrol, modify headers, no-referer

Completely disable: the option is available in about:config under "network.http.sendRefererHeader" and you want to set this to 0 to disable referer passing.

Google chrome / Chromium:

extensions: noref, spoofy, external noreferrer

Completely disable: Chnage ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Preferences or ~/.config/chromium/Default/Preferences and set this:

{
   ...
   "enable_referrers": false,
   ...
}

Or simply add --no-referrers to shortcut or in cli:

google-chrome --no-referrers

Opera:

Completely disable: Settings > Preferences > Advanced > Network, and uncheck "Send referrer information"

Spoofing web service:

http://referer.us/

Standalone filtering proxy (spoof any header):

Privoxy

Spoofing http_referer when using wget

‘--referer=url’

Spoofing http_referer when using curl

-e, --referer

Spoofing http_referer wth telnet

GET /index.html HTTP/1.0 (press return)
Referer: http://www.hah-hah.com (press return)
(press return again)

Declare multiple module.exports in Node.js

This is just for my reference as what I was trying to achieve can be accomplished by this.

In the module.js

We can do something like this

    module.exports = function ( firstArg, secondArg ) {

    function firstFunction ( ) { ... }

    function secondFunction ( ) { ... }

    function thirdFunction ( ) { ... }

      return { firstFunction: firstFunction, secondFunction: secondFunction,
 thirdFunction: thirdFunction };

    }

In the main.js

var name = require('module')(firstArg, secondArg);

Where is the documentation for the values() method of Enum?

Run this

    for (Method m : sex.class.getDeclaredMethods()) {
        System.out.println(m);
    }

you will see

public static test.Sex test.Sex.valueOf(java.lang.String)
public static test.Sex[] test.Sex.values()

These are all public methods that "sex" class has. They are not in the source code, javac.exe added them

Notes:

  1. never use sex as a class name, it's difficult to read your code, we use Sex in Java

  2. when facing a Java puzzle like this one, I recommend to use a bytecode decompiler tool (I use Andrey Loskutov's bytecode outline Eclispe plugin). This will show all what's inside a class

How to import an existing directory into Eclipse?

The thing that works best for me when that happens is :

  1. Create a new eclipse project(JAVA)

  2. Take your source file (contents of the src folder!!!) and drag from finder and drop into the src folder in eclipse IDE

  3. Make sure you add your external jars and stuff and tada you're done!!

and it will work, avoiding the error message comm: file 2 is not in sorted order when doing comm -12 a.txt b.txt.

Difference between OpenJDK and Adoptium/AdoptOpenJDK

Update: AdoptOpenJDK has changed its name to Adoptium, as part of its move to the Eclipse Foundation.

OpenJDK ? source code
Adoptium/AdoptOpenJDK ? builds

Difference between OpenJDK and AdoptOpenJDK

The first provides source-code, the other provides builds of that source-code.

Several vendors of Java & OpenJDK

Adoptium of the Eclipse Foundation, formerly known as AdoptOpenJDK, is only one of several vendors distributing implementations of the Java platform. These include:

  • Eclipse Foundation (Adoptium/AdoptOpenJDK)
  • Azul Systems
  • Oracle
  • Red Hat / IBM
  • BellSoft
  • SAP
  • Amazon AWS
  • … and more

See this flowchart of mine to help guide you in picking a vendor for an implementation of the Java platform. Click/tap to zoom.

python 3.x ImportError: No module named 'cStringIO'

From Python 3.0 changelog;

The StringIO and cStringIO modules are gone. Instead, import the io module and use io.StringIO or io.BytesIO for text and data respectively.

npm install errors with Error: ENOENT, chmod

I recently upgraded to node 4.2.1 on a Windows 7 x64 machine. When running

npm install -g bower

I got a similar error:

npm ERR! enoent ENOENT: no such file or directory, open 'C:\Users\THE_USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\npm-THE_HASH'

Thinking it was related to the AppData path, I played around with

npm config edit

and

npm config edit --global

to change the prefix, cache and tmp fields but received the same error with the new paths:

npm ERR! enoent ENOENT: no such file or directory, open 'C:\Users\THE_USERNAME\npm-temp\npm-THE_HASH'

All commands were run as Administrator, so I had full permissions.

Then I thought there were some issues with existing files so I ran:

npm cache clean

But got the same error. However, there were still some temp files lying around. Manually removing all temp data with cygwin finally fixed the problem for me:

rm -rf bower bower.cmd node_modules etc

If you only have Windows cmd, you could use something like

rmdir /S THE_TEMP_DIR

to remove all subdirectories (although if you have deeply nested node dependencies, this is notoriously problematic)

So, maybe there is some issues with upgrading npm and having versions of bower or other packages hanging around. In my case that seemed to be the problem

sys.path different in Jupyter and Python - how to import own modules in Jupyter?

The verified solution doesn't work for me, since my notebook is not in my sys.path. This works however;

File changed listener in Java

There is a commercial cross-desktop library for files and folders watching called JxFileWatcher. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.teamdev.com/jxfilewatcher/

Format XML string to print friendly XML string

Check the following link: How to pretty-print XML (Unfortunately, the link now returns 404 :()

The method in the link takes an XML string as an argument and returns a well-formed (indented) XML string.

I just copied the sample code from the link to make this answer more comprehensive and convenient.

public static String PrettyPrint(String XML)
{
    String Result = "";

    MemoryStream MS = new MemoryStream();
    XmlTextWriter W = new XmlTextWriter(MS, Encoding.Unicode);
    XmlDocument D   = new XmlDocument();

    try
    {
        // Load the XmlDocument with the XML.
        D.LoadXml(XML);

        W.Formatting = Formatting.Indented;

        // Write the XML into a formatting XmlTextWriter
        D.WriteContentTo(W);
        W.Flush();
        MS.Flush();

        // Have to rewind the MemoryStream in order to read
        // its contents.
        MS.Position = 0;

        // Read MemoryStream contents into a StreamReader.
        StreamReader SR = new StreamReader(MS);

        // Extract the text from the StreamReader.
        String FormattedXML = SR.ReadToEnd();

        Result = FormattedXML;
    }
    catch (XmlException)
    {
    }

    MS.Close();
    W.Close();

    return Result;
}

Select value from list of tuples where condition

One solution to this would be a list comprehension, with pattern matching inside your tuple:

>>> mylist = [(25,7),(26,9),(55,10)]
>>> [age for (age,person_id) in mylist if person_id == 10]
[55]

Another way would be using map and filter:

>>> map( lambda (age,_): age, filter( lambda (_,person_id): person_id == 10, mylist) )
[55]

What are access specifiers? Should I inherit with private, protected or public?

The explanation from Scott Meyers in Effective C++ might help understand when to use them:

Public inheritance should model "is-a relationship," whereas private inheritance should be used for "is-implemented-in-terms-of" - so you don't have to adhere to the interface of the superclass, you're just reusing the implementation.

How can I declare optional function parameters in JavaScript?

With ES6: This is now part of the language:

function myFunc(a, b = 0) {
   // function body
}

Please keep in mind that ES6 checks the values against undefined and not against truthy-ness (so only real undefined values get the default value - falsy values like null will not default).

With ES5:

function myFunc(a,b) {
  b = b || 0;

  // b will be set either to b or to 0.
}

This works as long as all values you explicitly pass in are truthy. Values that are not truthy as per MiniGod's comment: null, undefined, 0, false, ''

It's pretty common to see JavaScript libraries to do a bunch of checks on optional inputs before the function actually starts.

Linux command-line call not returning what it should from os.system?

If you're only interested in the output from the process, it's easiest to use subprocess' check_output function:

output = subprocess.check_output(["command", "arg1", "arg2"]);

Then output holds the program output to stdout. Check the link above for more info.

How can I pass a parameter to a t-sql script?

Two options save vijay.sql

declare
begin
execute immediate
'CREATE TABLE DMS_POP_WKLY_REFRESH_'||to_char(sysdate,'YYYYMMDD')||' NOLOGGING PARALLEL AS
SELECT wk.*,bbc.distance_km ,NVL(bbc.tactical_broadband_offer,0) tactical_broadband_offer ,
       sel.tactical_select_executive_flag,
       sel.agent_name,
       res.DMS_RESIGN_CAMPAIGN_CODE,
       pclub.tactical_select_flag
FROM   spineowner.pop_wkly_refresh_20100201 wk,
       dms_bb_coverage_102009 bbc,
       dms_select_executive_group sel,
       DMS_RESIGN_CAMPAIGN_26052009 res,
       DMS_PRIORITY_CLUB pclub
WHERE  wk.mpn = bbc.mpn(+)
AND    wk.mpn = sel.mpn (+)
AND    wk.mpn = res.mpn (+)
AND    wk.mpn = pclub.mpn (+)'
end;
/

The above will generate table names automatically based on sysdate. If you still need to pass as variable, then save vijay.sql as

declare
begin
execute immediate
'CREATE TABLE DMS_POP_WKLY_REFRESH_'||&1||' NOLOGGING PARALLEL AS
SELECT wk.*,bbc.distance_km ,NVL(bbc.tactical_broadband_offer,0) tactical_broadband_offer ,
       sel.tactical_select_executive_flag,
       sel.agent_name,
       res.DMS_RESIGN_CAMPAIGN_CODE,
       pclub.tactical_select_flag
FROM   spineowner.pop_wkly_refresh_20100201 wk,
       dms_bb_coverage_102009 bbc,
       dms_select_executive_group sel,
       DMS_RESIGN_CAMPAIGN_26052009 res,
       DMS_PRIORITY_CLUB pclub
WHERE  wk.mpn = bbc.mpn(+)
AND    wk.mpn = sel.mpn (+)
AND    wk.mpn = res.mpn (+)
AND    wk.mpn = pclub.mpn (+)'
end;
/

and then run as sqlplus -s username/password @vijay.sql '20100101'

Getting RSA private key from PEM BASE64 Encoded private key file

Make sure your id_rsa file doesn't have any extension like .txt or .rtf. Rich Text Format adds additional characters to your file and those gets added to byte array. Which eventually causes invalid private key error. Long story short, Copy the file, not content.

How to get single value of List<object>

Define a class like this :

public class myclass {
       string id ;
       string title ;
       string content;
 }

 public class program {
        public void Main () {
               List<myclass> objlist = new List<myclass> () ;
               foreach (var value in objlist)  {
                       TextBox1.Text = value.id ;
                       TextBox2.Text= value.title;
                       TextBox3.Text= value.content ;
                }
         }
  }

I tried to draw a sketch and you can improve it in many ways. Instead of defining class "myclass", you can define struct.

Batch file to map a drive when the folder name contains spaces

I'm not sure this will help you to much by I once needed a batch file to open a game, the .exe was in a folder with blanks (duh!) and I tried : START "C:\Fold 1\fold 2\game.exe" and START C:\Fold 1\fold 2\game.exe - None worked, then I tried

   START C:\"Fold 1"\"fold 2"\game.exe and it worked

Hope it helps :)

What does java.lang.Thread.interrupt() do?

public void interrupt()

Interrupts this thread.

Unless the current thread is interrupting itself, which is always permitted, the checkAccess method of this thread is invoked, which may cause a SecurityException to be thrown.

If this thread is blocked in an invocation of the wait(), wait(long), or wait(long, int) methods of the Object class, or of the join(), join(long), join(long, int), sleep(long), or sleep(long, int), methods of this class, then its interrupt status will be cleared and it will receive an InterruptedException.

If this thread is blocked in an I/O operation upon an interruptible channel then the channel will be closed, the thread's interrupt status will be set, and the thread will receive a ClosedByInterruptException.

If this thread is blocked in a Selector then the thread's interrupt status will be set and it will return immediately from the selection operation, possibly with a non-zero value, just as if the selector's wakeup method were invoked.

If none of the previous conditions hold then this thread's interrupt status will be set.

Interrupting a thread that is not alive need not have any effect.

Throws: SecurityException - if the current thread cannot modify this thread

This was the input I had entered on terminal: mysql> create table todos (description, completed);

Solution: For each column type you must specify the type of content they will contain. This could either be text, integer, variable, boolean there are many different types of data.

mysql> create table todos (description text, completed boolean);

Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.02 sec)

It now passed successfully.

X-UA-Compatible is set to IE=edge, but it still doesn't stop Compatibility Mode

Additionally, X-UA-Compatible must be the first meta tag in the head section

<head>
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge,chrome=1">
</head>

By the way, the correct order or the main head tags are:

<head>
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge,chrome=1">
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title>Site Title</title>
    <!-- other tags -->
</head>

This way

  1. we set the render engine to use before IExplorer begins to process
  2. the document then we set the encoding to use for all browser
  3. then we print the title, which will be processed with the already defined encoding.

Tomcat 7.0.43 "INFO: Error parsing HTTP request header"

In our case it turned out that the error happened because we have a custom filter in our application which does HttpServletResponse sendRedirect() to other url.

For some reason, the redirection is not closing the keep-alive status of the connection, hence the timeout exception.

We checked with Tomcat Docs and when we disabled the maxKeepAliveRequests by setting it's value to 1 and the error stopped showing up.

For now we do not have the actual solution to the error.

Python strptime() and timezones?

Since strptime returns a datetime object which has tzinfo attribute, We can simply replace it with desired timezone.

>>> import datetime

>>> date_time_str = '2018-06-29 08:15:27.243860'
>>> date_time_obj = datetime.datetime.strptime(date_time_str, '%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S.%f').replace(tzinfo=datetime.timezone.utc)
>>> date_time_obj.tzname()
'UTC'

File Not Found when running PHP with Nginx

Probably it's too late to answer but a couple things since this is a really annoying error. Following solution worked on Mac OS X Yosemite.

  1. It's the best if you have

fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;

  1. The include with fast cgi params should go above that line.

  2. All your directories down to the PHP file you're executing (including that file too) should have a+x permissions, e.g.

sudo chmod a+x /Users/
sudo chmod a+x /Users/oleg/
sudo chmod a+x /Users/oleg/www/
sudo chmod a+x /Users/oleg/www/a.php

How do I create a self-signed certificate for code signing on Windows?

As stated in the answer, in order to use a non deprecated way to sign your own script, one should use New-SelfSignedCertificate.

  1. Generate the key:
New-SelfSignedCertificate -DnsName [email protected] -Type CodeSigning -CertStoreLocation cert:\CurrentUser\My
  1. Export the certificate without the private key:
Export-Certificate -Cert (Get-ChildItem Cert:\CurrentUser\My -CodeSigningCert)[0] -FilePath code_signing.crt

The [0] will make this work for cases when you have more than one certificate... Obviously make the index match the certificate you want to use... or use a way to filtrate (by thumprint or issuer).

  1. Import it as Trusted Publisher
Import-Certificate -FilePath .\code_signing.crt -Cert Cert:\CurrentUser\TrustedPublisher
  1. Import it as a Root certificate authority.
Import-Certificate -FilePath .\code_signing.crt -Cert Cert:\CurrentUser\Root
  1. Sign the script (assuming here it's named script.ps1, fix the path accordingly).
Set-AuthenticodeSignature .\script.ps1 -Certificate (Get-ChildItem Cert:\CurrentUser\My -CodeSigningCert)

Obviously once you have setup the key, you can simply sign any other scripts with it.

React - uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'setState' of undefined

This error can be resolved by various methods-

  • If you are using ES5 syntax, then as per React js Documentation you have to use bind method.

    Something like this for the above example:

    this.delta = this.delta.bind(this)

  • If you are using ES6 syntax,then you need not use bind method,you can do it with something like this:

    delta=()=>{ this.setState({ count : this.state.count++ }); }

Converting LastLogon to DateTime format

DateTime.FromFileTime should do the trick:

PS C:\> [datetime]::FromFileTime(129948127853609000)

Monday, October 15, 2012 3:13:05 PM

Then depending on how you want to format it, check out standard and custom datetime format strings.

PS C:\> [datetime]::FromFileTime(129948127853609000).ToString('d MMMM')
15 October
PS C:\> [datetime]::FromFileTime(129948127853609000).ToString('g')
10/15/2012 3:13 PM

If you want to integrate this into your one-liner, change your select statement to this:

... | Select Name, manager, @{N='LastLogon'; E={[DateTime]::FromFileTime($_.LastLogon)}} | ...

HTML table needs spacing between columns, not rows

If you can use inline styling, you can set the left and right padding on each td.. Or you use an extra td between columns and set a number of non-breaking spaces as @rene kindly suggested.

ASP.NET Web API application gives 404 when deployed at IIS 7

You may need to install Hotfix KB980368.

This article describes a update that enables certain Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 or IIS 7.5 handlers to handle requests whose URLs do not end with a period. Specifically, these handlers are mapped to "." request paths. Currently, a handler that is mapped to a "." request path handles only requests whose URLs end with a period. For example, the handler handles only requests whose URLs resemble the following URL:

http://www.example.com/ExampleSite/ExampleFile.

After you apply this update, handlers that are mapped to a "*." request path can handle requests whose URLs end with a period and requests whose URLs do not end with a period. For example, the handler can now handle requests that resemble the following URLs:

http://www.example.com/ExampleSite/ExampleFile

http://www.example.com/ExampleSite/ExampleFile.

After this patch is applied, ASP.NET 4 applications can handle requests for extensionless URLs. Therefore, managed HttpModules that run prior to handler execution will run. In some cases, the HttpModules can return errors for extensionless URLs. For example, an HttpModule that was written to expect only .aspx requests may now return errors when it tries to access the HttpContext.Session property.

How to get last 7 days data from current datetime to last 7 days in sql server

I don't think you have data for every single day for the past seven days. Days for which no data exist, will obviously not show up.

Try this and validate that you have data for EACH day for the past 7 days

SELECT DISTINCT CreatedDate
FROM News
WHERE CreatedDate >= DATEADD(day,-7, GETDATE())
ORDER BY CreatedDate

EDIT - Copied from your comment

i have dec 19th -1 row data,18th -2 rows,17th -3 rows,16th -3 rows,15th -3 rows,12th -2 rows, 11th -4 rows,9th -1 row,8th -1 row

You don't have data for all days. That is your problem and not the query. If you execute the query today - 22nd - you will only get data for 19th, 18th,17th,16th and 15th. You have no data for 20th, 21st and 22nd.

EDIT - To get data for the last 7 days, where data is available you can try

select id,
NewsHeadline as news_headline,
NewsText as news_text,
state,
CreatedDate as created_on
from News
WHERE CreatedDate IN (SELECT DISTINCT TOP 7 CreatedDate from News
order by createddate DESC)

Is there a code obfuscator for PHP?

I'm not sure you can label obfuscation of an interpreted language as pointless (I'm unable to add a comment to Schwern's post, so here goes a new entry).

I think it's a little shortsighted to assume you know all the possible scenarios where someone would like to obfuscate code, and you assume that anyone will actually be willing to go to whatever necessary lengths to view that code once obfuscated. Consider my current scenario:

I work for a consulting company that is developing a large and fairly sophisticated PHP-based site. The project will be hosted on a client's server that is hosting other sites developed by other consultancies. Technically any code we write is owned by the client, so we can't license it. However, any other consultancy (competitor) with access to the server can copy our code without getting permission from the client first. We therefore have a genuine reason for obfuscation - to make the effort required for a competitor to understand our code more than the effort of creating a copy of our work from scratch.

pandas create new column based on values from other columns / apply a function of multiple columns, row-wise

The answers above are perfectly valid, but a vectorized solution exists, in the form of numpy.select. This allows you to define conditions, then define outputs for those conditions, much more efficiently than using apply:

First, define conditions:

conditions = [
    df['eri_hispanic'] == 1,
    df[['eri_afr_amer', 'eri_asian', 'eri_hawaiian', 'eri_nat_amer', 'eri_white']].sum(1).gt(1),
    df['eri_nat_amer'] == 1,
    df['eri_asian'] == 1,
    df['eri_afr_amer'] == 1,
    df['eri_hawaiian'] == 1,
    df['eri_white'] == 1,
]

Now, define the corresponding outputs:

outputs = [
    'Hispanic', 'Two Or More', 'A/I AK Native', 'Asian', 'Black/AA', 'Haw/Pac Isl.', 'White'
]

Finally, using numpy.select:

res = np.select(conditions, outputs, 'Other')
pd.Series(res)

0           White
1        Hispanic
2           White
3           White
4           Other
5           White
6     Two Or More
7           White
8    Haw/Pac Isl.
9           White
dtype: object

Why should numpy.select be used over apply? Here are some performance checks:

df = pd.concat([df]*1000)

In [42]: %timeit df.apply(lambda row: label_race(row), axis=1)
1.07 s ± 4.16 ms per loop (mean ± std. dev. of 7 runs, 1 loop each)

In [44]: %%timeit
    ...: conditions = [
    ...:     df['eri_hispanic'] == 1,
    ...:     df[['eri_afr_amer', 'eri_asian', 'eri_hawaiian', 'eri_nat_amer', 'eri_white']].sum(1).gt(1),
    ...:     df['eri_nat_amer'] == 1,
    ...:     df['eri_asian'] == 1,
    ...:     df['eri_afr_amer'] == 1,
    ...:     df['eri_hawaiian'] == 1,
    ...:     df['eri_white'] == 1,
    ...: ]
    ...:
    ...: outputs = [
    ...: 'Hispanic', 'Two Or More', 'A/I AK Native', 'Asian', 'Black/AA', 'Haw/Pac Isl.', 'White'
    ...: ]
    ...:
    ...: np.select(conditions, outputs, 'Other')
    ...:
    ...:
3.09 ms ± 17 µs per loop (mean ± std. dev. of 7 runs, 100 loops each)

Using numpy.select gives us vastly improved performance, and the discrepancy will only increase as the data grows.

how to create dynamic two dimensional array in java?

simple you want to inialize a 2d array and assign a size of array then a example is

   public static void main(String args[])
   {

    arr = new char[3][3];
    }

   //this is a way to inialize a 2d array in java....

How to replace sql field value

You could just use REPLACE:

UPDATE myTable SET emailCol = REPLACE(emailCol, '.com', '.org')`.

But take into account an email address such as [email protected] will be updated to [email protected].

If you want to be on a safer side, you should check for the last 4 characters using RIGHT, and append .org to the SUBSTRING manually instead. Notice the usage of UPPER to make the search for the .com ending case insensitive.

UPDATE myTable
SET emailCol = SUBSTRING(emailCol, 1, LEN(emailCol)-4) + '.org'
WHERE UPPER(RIGHT(emailCol,4)) = '.COM';

See it working in this SQLFiddle.

how to hide <li> bullets in navigation menu and footer links BUT show them for listing items

The example bellow explains how to remove bullets using a css style class. You can use , similar to css class, by identifier (#id), by parent tag, etc. The same way you can use to define a css to remove bullets from the page footer.

I've used this site as a starting point.

How to split a string in shell and get the last field

You can use string operators:

$ foo=1:2:3:4:5
$ echo ${foo##*:}
5

This trims everything from the front until a ':', greedily.

${foo  <-- from variable foo
  ##   <-- greedy front trim
  *    <-- matches anything
  :    <-- until the last ':'

How to read all rows from huge table?

At lest in my case the problem was on the client that tries to fetch the results.

Wanted to get a .csv with ALL the results.

I found the solution by using

psql -U postgres -d dbname -c "COPY (SELECT * FROM T) TO STDOUT WITH DELIMITER ','"

(where dbname the name of the db...) and redirecting to a file.

Facebook Architecture

Well Facebook has undergone MANY many changes and it wasn't originally designed to be efficient. It was designed to do it's job. I have absolutely no idea what the code looks like and you probably won't find much info about it (for obvious security and copyright reasons), but just take a look at the API. Look at how often it changes and how much of it doesn't work properly, anymore, or at all.

I think the biggest ace up their sleeve is the Hiphop. http://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/358 You can use HipHop yourself: https://github.com/facebook/hiphop-php/wiki

But if you ask me it's a very ambitious and probably time wasting task. Hiphop only supports so much, it can't simply convert everything to C++. So what does this tell us? Well, it tells us that Facebook is NOT fully taking advantage of the PHP language. It's not using the latest 5.3 and I'm willing to bet there's still a lot that is PHP 4 compatible. Otherwise, they couldn't use HipHop. HipHop IS A GOOD IDEA and needs to grow and expand, but in it's current state it's not really useful for that many people who are building NEW PHP apps.

There's also PHP to JAVA via things like Resin/Quercus. Again, it doesn't support everything...

Another thing to note is that if you use any non-standard PHP module, you aren't going to be able to convert that code to C++ or Java either. However...Let's take a look at PHP modules. They are ARE compiled in C++. So if you can build PHP modules that do things (like parse XML, etc.) then you are basically (minus some interaction) working at the same speed. Of course you can't just make a PHP module for every possible need and your entire app because you would have to recompile and it would be much more difficult to code, etc.

However...There are some handy PHP modules that can help with speed concerns. Though at the end of the day, we have this awesome thing known as "the cloud" and with it, we can scale our applications (PHP included) so it doesn't matter as much anymore. Hardware is becoming cheaper and cheaper. Amazon just lowered it's prices (again) speaking of.

So as long as you code your PHP app around the idea that it will need to one day scale...Then I think you're fine and I'm not really sure I'd even look at Facebook and what they did because when they did it, it was a completely different world and now trying to hold up that infrastructure and maintain it...Well, you get things like HipHop.

Now how is HipHop going to help you? It won't. It can't. You're starting fresh, you can use PHP 5.3. I'd highly recommend looking into PHP 5.3 frameworks and all the new benefits that PHP 5.3 brings to the table along with the SPL libraries and also think about your database too. You're most likely serving up content from a database, so check out MongoDB and other types of databases that are schema-less and document-oriented. They are much much faster and better for the most "common" type of web site/app.

Look at NEW companies like Foursquare and Smugmug and some other companies that are utilizing NEW technology and HOW they are using it. For as successful as Facebook is, I honestly would not look at them for "how" to build an efficient web site/app. I'm not saying they don't have very (very) talented people that work there that are solving (their) problems creatively...I'm also not saying that Facebook isn't a great idea in general and that it's not successful and that you shouldn't get ideas from it....I'm just saying that if you could view their entire source code, you probably wouldn't benefit from it.

Executing a command stored in a variable from PowerShell

Try invoking your command with Invoke-Expression:

Invoke-Expression $cmd1

Here is a working example on my machine:

$cmd = "& 'C:\Program Files\7-zip\7z.exe' a -tzip c:\temp\test.zip c:\temp\test.txt"
Invoke-Expression $cmd

iex is an alias for Invoke-Expression so you could do:

iex $cmd1

Swift error : signal SIGABRT how to solve it

I had the same problem. I made a button in the storyboard and connected it to the ViewController, and then later on deleted the button. So the connection was still there, but the button was not, and so I got the same error as you.

To Fix:

Go to the connection inspector (the arrow in the top right corner, in your storyboard), and delete any unused connections.

How to convert a DataTable to a string in C#?

I created my variant of class for your needs. I believe it is a bit more configurable than already provided variants. You can use it with all default settings just create an instance of a class and call StringifyDataTable method, or you can set additional options if needed.

public class DataTableStringifier
{
    public bool IsOuterBordersPresent { get; set; } //Whether outer borders of table needed
    public bool IsHeaderHorizontalSeparatorPresent { get; set; } // Whether horizontal line separator between table title and data is needed. Useful to set 'false' if you expect only 1 or 2 rows of data - no need for additional lines then
    public char ValueSeparator { get; set; } //Vertical line character
    public char HorizontalLinePadChar { get; set; } // Horizontal line character
    public char HorizontalLineSeparator { get; set; } // Horizontal border (between header and data) column separator (crossing of horizontal and vertical borders)
    public int ValueMargin { get; set; } // Horizontal margin from table borders (inner and outer) to cell values
    public int MaxColumnWidth { get; set; } // To avoid too wide columns with thousands of characters. Longer values will be cropped in the center
    public string LongValuesEllipses { get; set; } // Cropped values wil be inserted this string in the middle to mark the point of cropping

    public DataTableStringifier()
    {
        MaxColumnWidth = int.MaxValue;
        IsHeaderHorizontalSeparatorPresent = true;
        ValueSeparator = '|';
        ValueMargin = 1;
        HorizontalLinePadChar = '-';
        HorizontalLineSeparator = '+';
        LongValuesEllipses = "...";
        IsOuterBordersPresent = false;
    }

    public string StringifyDataTable(DataTable table)
    {

How to convert 1 to true or 0 to false upon model fetch

Assigning Comparison to property value

JavaScript

You could assign the comparison of the property to "1"

obj["isChecked"] = (obj["isChecked"]==="1");

This only evaluates for a String value of "1" though. Other variables evaulate to false like an actual typeof number would be false. (i.e. obj["isChecked"]=1)

If you wanted to be indiscrimate about "1" or 1, you could use:

obj["isChecked"] = (obj["isChecked"]=="1");

Example Outputs

console.log(obj["isChecked"]==="1"); // true
console.log(obj["isChecked"]===1); // false
console.log(obj["isChecked"]==1); // true
console.log(obj["isChecked"]==="0"); // false
console.log(obj["isChecked"]==="Elephant"); // false

PHP

Same concept in PHP

$obj["isChecked"] = ($obj["isChecked"] == "1");

The same operator limitations as stated above for JavaScript apply.

Double Not

The 'double not' also works. It's confusing when people first read it but it works in both languages for integer/number type values. It however does not work in JavaScript for string type values as they always evaluate to true:

JavaScript

!!"1"; //true
!!"0"; //true
!!1; //true
!!0; //false
!!parseInt("0",10); // false

PHP

echo !!"1"; //true
echo !!"0"; //false
echo !!1; //true
echo !!0; //false

Tomcat 7: How to set initial heap size correctly?

setenv.sh is better, because you can easily port such configuration from one machine to another, or from one Tomcat version to another. catalina.sh changes from one version of Tomcat to another. But you can keep your setenv.sh unchanged with any version of Tomcat.

Another advantage is, that it is easier to track the history of your changes if you add it to your backup or versioning system. If you look how you setenv.sh changes along the history, you will see only your own changes. Whereas if you use catalina.sh, you will always see not only your changes, but also changes that came with each newer version of the Tomcat.

Simple way to change the position of UIView?

CGRectOffset has since been replaced with the instance method offsetBy.

https://developer.apple.com/reference/coregraphics/cgrect/1454841-offsetby

For example, what used to be

aView.frame = CGRectOffset(aView.frame, 10, 10)

would now be

aView.frame = aView.frame.offsetBy(dx: CGFloat(10), dy: CGFloat(10))

How do you implement a class in C?

My approach would be to move the struct and all primarily-associated functions to a separate source file(s) so that it can be used "portably".

Depending on your compiler, you might be able to include functions into the struct, but that's a very compiler-specific extension, and has nothing to do with the last version of the standard I routinely used :)

Java ByteBuffer to String

the root of this question is how to decode bytes to string?

this can be done with the JAVA NIO CharSet:

public final CharBuffer decode(ByteBuffer bb)

FileChannel channel = FileChannel.open(
  Paths.get("files/text-latin1.txt", StandardOpenOption.READ);
ByteBuffer buffer = ByteBuffer.allocate(1024);
channel.read(buffer);

CharSet latin1 = StandardCharsets.ISO_8859_1;
CharBuffer latin1Buffer = latin1.decode(buffer);

String result = new String(latin1Buffer.array());
  • First we create a channel and read it in a buffer
  • Then decode method decodes a Latin1 buffer to a char buffer
  • We can then put the result, for instance, in a String

Data binding to SelectedItem in a WPF Treeview

This can be accomplished in a 'nicer' way using only binding and the GalaSoft MVVM Light library's EventToCommand. In your VM add a command which will be called when the selected item is changed, and initialize the command to perform whatever action is necessary. In this example I used a RelayCommand and will just set the SelectedCluster property.

public class ViewModel
{
    public ViewModel()
    {
        SelectedClusterChanged = new RelayCommand<Cluster>( c => SelectedCluster = c );
    }

    public RelayCommand<Cluster> SelectedClusterChanged { get; private set; }

    public Cluster SelectedCluster { get; private set; }
}

Then add the EventToCommand behavior in your xaml. This is really easy using blend.

<TreeView
      x:Name="lstClusters"
      ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Model.Clusters}"
      ItemTemplate="{StaticResource HoofdCLusterTemplate}">
    <i:Interaction.Triggers>
        <i:EventTrigger EventName="SelectedItemChanged">
            <GalaSoft_MvvmLight_Command:EventToCommand Command="{Binding SelectedClusterChanged}" CommandParameter="{Binding ElementName=lstClusters,Path=SelectedValue}"/>
        </i:EventTrigger>
    </i:Interaction.Triggers>
</TreeView>

No Entity Framework provider found for the ADO.NET provider with invariant name 'System.Data.SqlClient'

Instead of adding EntityFramework.SqlServer to host project you can ensure a static reference to it from your Model/entity project like this

static MyContext()
{
    var type = typeof(System.Data.Entity.SqlServer.SqlProviderServices);
    if(type == null)
        throw new Exception("Do not remove, ensures static reference to System.Data.Entity.SqlServer");
}

This will make the build process include the assembly with the host project.

python catch exception and continue try block

I don't think you want to do this. The correct way to use a try statement in general is as precisely as possible. I think it would be better to do:

try:
    do_smth1()
except Stmnh1Exception:
    # handle Stmnh1Exception

try:
    do_smth2()
except Stmnh2Exception:
    # handle Stmnh2Exception

What is perm space?

Perm space is used to keep informations for loaded classes and few other advanced features like String Pool(for highly optimized string equality testing), which usually get created by String.intern() methods. As your application(number of classes) will grow this space shall get filled quickly, since the garbage collection on this Space is not much effective to clean up as required, you quickly get Out of Memory : perm gen space error. After then, no application shall run on that machine effectively even after having a huge empty JVM.

Before starting your application you should java -XX:MaxPermSize to get rid of this error.

When do you use map vs flatMap in RxJava?

I just wanted to add that with flatMap, you don't really need to use your own custom Observable inside the function and you can rely on standard factory methods/operators:

Observable.from(jsonFile).flatMap(new Func1<File, Observable<String>>() {
    @Override public Observable<String> call(final File file) {
        try {
            String json = new Gson().toJson(new FileReader(file), Object.class);
            return Observable.just(json);
        } catch (FileNotFoundException ex) {
            return Observable.<String>error(ex);
        }
    }
});

Generally, you should avoid throwing (Runtime-) exceptions from onXXX methods and callbacks if possible, even though we placed as many safeguards as we could in RxJava.

Android Calling JavaScript functions in WebView

I figured out what the issue was : missing quotes in the testEcho() parameter. This is how I got the call to work:

How to center buttons in Twitter Bootstrap 3?

Update for Bootstrap 4:

Wrap the button with a div set with the 'd-flex' and 'justify-content-center' utility classes to take advantage of flexbox.

<!-- Button -->
<div class="form-group">
  <div class="d-flex justify-content-center">
    <button id="singlebutton" name="singlebutton" class="btn btn-primary">
      Next Step!
    </button>
  </div>
</div>

The benefit of using flexbox is being able to add additional elements/buttons on the same axis, but with their own separate alignment. It also opens up the possibility of vertical alignment with the 'align-items-start/center/end' classes, too.

You could wrap the label and button with another div to keep them aligned with each other.

What is "X-Content-Type-Options=nosniff"?

# prevent mime based attacks
Header set X-Content-Type-Options "nosniff"

This header prevents "mime" based attacks. This header prevents Internet Explorer from MIME-sniffing a response away from the declared content-type as the header instructs the browser not to override the response content type. With the nosniff option, if the server says the content is text/html, the browser will render it as text/html.

How to escape the % (percent) sign in C's printf?

You can escape it by posting a double '%' like this: %%

Using your example:

printf("hello%%");

Escaping '%' sign is only for printf. If you do:

char a[5];
strcpy(a, "%%");
printf("This is a's value: %s\n", a);

It will print: This is a's value: %%

Loop backwards using indices in Python?

Generally in Python, you can use negative indices to start from the back:

numbers = [10, 20, 30, 40, 50]
for i in xrange(len(numbers)):
    print numbers[-i - 1]

Result:

50
40
30
20

Create MSI or setup project with Visual Studio 2012

To create setup projects in Visual Studio 2012 with InstallShield Limited Edition, watch this video.

The InstallShield limited edition that cannot install services.

"ISLE is by far the worst installer option and the upgraded, read - paid for, version is cumbersome to use at best and impossible in most situations. InnoSetup, Nullsoft, Advanced, WiX, or just about any other installer is better. If you did a survey you would see that nobody is using ISLE. I don't know why you guys continue to associate with InstallShield. It damages your credibility. Any developer worth half his weight in salt knows ISLE is worthless and when you stand behind it we have to question Microsoft's judgment."

The WiX Toolset, which, while powerful is exceeding user-unfriendly and has a steep learning curve. There is even a downloadable template for installing Windows services (ref. VS2012: Installer for Windows services?).

How to compare two dates in Objective-C

NSDate *today = [NSDate date]; // it will give you current date
NSDate *newDate = [NSDate dateWithString:@"xxxxxx"]; // your date

NSComparisonResult result;
//has three possible values: NSOrderedSame,NSOrderedDescending, NSOrderedAscending

result = [today compare:newDate]; // comparing two dates

if(result==NSOrderedAscending)
    NSLog(@"today is less");
else if(result==NSOrderedDescending)
    NSLog(@"newDate is less");
else
    NSLog(@"Both dates are same");

There are other ways that you may use to compare an NSDate objects. Each of the methods will be more efficient at certain tasks. I have chosen the compare method because it will handle most of your basic date comparison needs.

Format numbers in JavaScript similar to C#

Here's a simple JS function to add commas to an integer number in string format. It will handle whole numbers or decimal numbers. You can pass it either a number or a string. It obviously returns a string.

function addCommas(str) {
    var parts = (str + "").split("."),
        main = parts[0],

Here's a set of test cases: http://jsfiddle.net/jfriend00/6y57j/

You can see it being used in this previous jsFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/jfriend00/sMnjT/. You can find functions that will handle decimal numbers too with a simple Google search for "javascript add commas".

Converting a number to a string can be done many ways. The easiest is just to add it to a string:

var myNumber = 3;
var myStr = "" + myNumber;   // "3"

Within, the context of your jsFiddle, you'd get commas into the counter by changing this line:

jTarget.text(current);

to this:

jTarget.text(addCommas(current));

You can see it working here: http://jsfiddle.net/jfriend00/CbjSX/

Call a url from javascript

Yes, what you are asking for is called AJAX or XMLHttpRequest. You can either use a library like jQuery to simplify making the call (due to cross-browser compatibility issues), or write your own handler.

In jQuery:

$.GET('url.asp', {data: 'here'}, function(data){ /* what to do with the data returned */ })

In plain vanilla javaScript (from w3c):

var xmlhttp;
function loadXMLDoc(url)
{
    xmlhttp=null;
if (window.XMLHttpRequest)
  {// code for all new browsers
      xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest();
  }
else if (window.ActiveXObject)
  {// code for IE5 and IE6
      xmlhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
  }
if (xmlhttp!=null)
  {
      xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=state_Change;
      xmlhttp.open("GET",url,true);
      xmlhttp.send(null);
  }
else
  {
      alert("Your browser does not support XMLHTTP.");
  }
}

function state_Change()
{
    if (xmlhttp.readyState==4)
      {// 4 = "loaded"
          if (xmlhttp.status==200)
            {// 200 = OK
             //xmlhttp.data and shtuff
            // ...our code here...
        }
  else
        {
            alert("Problem retrieving data");
        }
  }
}

Key Value Pair List

Using one of the subsets method in this question

var list = new List<KeyValuePair<string, int>>() {
    new KeyValuePair<string, int>("A", 1),
    new KeyValuePair<string, int>("B", 0),
    new KeyValuePair<string, int>("C", 0),
    new KeyValuePair<string, int>("D", 2),
    new KeyValuePair<string, int>("E", 8),
};

int input = 11;
var items = SubSets(list).FirstOrDefault(x => x.Sum(y => y.Value)==input);

"Correct" way to specifiy optional arguments in R functions

how about this?

fun <- function(x, ...){
  y=NULL
  parms=list(...)
  for (name in names(parms) ) {
    assign(name, parms[[name]])
  }
  print(is.null(y))
}

Then try:

> fun(1,y=4)
[1] FALSE
> fun(1)
[1] TRUE
