How can I stop float left?

You could modify .adm and add

.adm{
 clear:both;
}

That should make it move to a new line

When do items in HTML5 local storage expire?

The lifecycle is controlled by the application/user.

From the standard:

User agents should expire data from the local storage areas only for security reasons or when requested to do so by the user. User agents should always avoid deleting data while a script that could access that data is running.

Python display text with font & color?

I have some code in my game that displays live score. It is in a function for quick access.

def texts(score):
   font=pygame.font.Font(None,30)
   scoretext=font.render("Score:"+str(score), 1,(255,255,255))
   screen.blit(scoretext, (500, 457))

and I call it using this in my while loop:

texts(score)

Set keyboard caret position in html textbox

Excerpted from Josh Stodola's Setting keyboard caret Position in a Textbox or TextArea with Javascript

A generic function that will allow you to insert the caret at any position of a textbox or textarea that you wish:

function setCaretPosition(elemId, caretPos) {
    var elem = document.getElementById(elemId);

    if(elem != null) {
        if(elem.createTextRange) {
            var range = elem.createTextRange();
            range.move('character', caretPos);
            range.select();
        }
        else {
            if(elem.selectionStart) {
                elem.focus();
                elem.setSelectionRange(caretPos, caretPos);
            }
            else
                elem.focus();
        }
    }
}

The first expected parameter is the ID of the element you wish to insert the keyboard caret on. If the element is unable to be found, nothing will happen (obviously). The second parameter is the caret positon index. Zero will put the keyboard caret at the beginning. If you pass a number larger than the number of characters in the elements value, it will put the keyboard caret at the end.

Tested on IE6 and up, Firefox 2, Opera 8, Netscape 9, SeaMonkey, and Safari. Unfortunately on Safari it does not work in combination with the onfocus event).

An example of using the above function to force the keyboard caret to jump to the end of all textareas on the page when they receive focus:

function addLoadEvent(func) {
    if(typeof window.onload != 'function') {
        window.onload = func;
    }
    else {
        if(func) {
            var oldLoad = window.onload;

            window.onload = function() {
                if(oldLoad)
                        oldLoad();

                func();
            }
        }
    }
}

// The setCaretPosition function belongs right here!

function setTextAreasOnFocus() {
/***
 * This function will force the keyboard caret to be positioned
 * at the end of all textareas when they receive focus.
 */
    var textAreas = document.getElementsByTagName('textarea');

    for(var i = 0; i < textAreas.length; i++) {
        textAreas[i].onfocus = function() {
            setCaretPosition(this.id, this.value.length);
        }
    }

    textAreas = null;
}

addLoadEvent(setTextAreasOnFocus);

How to disable the parent form when a child form is active?

For me this work for example here what happen is the main menu will be disabled when you open the registration form.

 frmUserRegistration frmMainMenu = new frmUserRegistration();
    frmMainMenu.ShowDialog(this);

Find files and tar them (with spaces)

There could be another way to achieve what you want. Basically,

  1. Use the find command to output path to whatever files you're looking for. Redirect stdout to a filename of your choosing.
  2. Then tar with the -T option which allows it to take a list of file locations (the one you just created with find!)

    find . -name "*.whatever" > yourListOfFiles
    tar -cvf yourfile.tar -T yourListOfFiles

Javascript variable access in HTML

<html>
<script>
var simpleText = "hello_world";
var finalSplitText = simpleText.split("_");
var splitText = finalSplitText[0];

window.onload = function() {
       //when the document is finished loading, replace everything
       //between the <a ...> </a> tags with the value of splitText
   document.getElementById("myLink").innerHTML=splitText;
}

</script>

<body>
<a id="myLink" href = test.html></a>
</body>
</html>

Can you test google analytics on a localhost address?

An easier tool to monitor the tracking tags is to use the Chrome extension (probably available, or the equivalent for other browsers) - Google Tag Assistant. This will show what tags are firing, what problems it has found, and even breaks out stuff like eCommerce values for easy reading. Also works with the Google Tag Manager, and can handle multiple sets of tags on the page.

What does upstream mean in nginx?

upstream defines a cluster that you can proxy requests to. It's commonly used for defining either a web server cluster for load balancing, or an app server cluster for routing / load balancing.

How to view file history in Git?

Use git log to view the commit history. Each commit has an associated revision specifier that is a hash key (e.g. 14b8d0982044b0c49f7a855e396206ee65c0e787 and b410ad4619d296f9d37f0db3d0ff5b9066838b39). To view the difference between two different commits, use git diff with the first few characters of the revision specifiers of both commits, like so:

# diff between commits 14b8... and b410...
git diff 14b8..b410
# only include diff of specified files
git diff 14b8..b410 path/to/file/a path/to/file/b

If you want to get an overview over all the differences that happened from commit to commit, use git log or git whatchanged with the patch option:

# include patch displays in the commit history
git log -p
git whatchanged -p
# only get history of those commits that touch specified paths
git log path/a path/b
git whatchanged path/c path/d

Reading an Excel file in PHP

It depends on how you want to use the data in the excel file. If you want to import it into mysql, you could simply save it as a CSV formatted file and then use fgetcsv to parse it.

How to see the changes in a Git commit?

It is also possible to review changes between two commits for a specific file.

git diff <commit_Id_1> <commit_Id_2> some_dir/file.txt

Is it possible to program Android to act as physical USB keyboard?

I've modified kernel on Nexus 7 to act like standard HID keyboard and mouse, without losing MTP/ADB/other USB functionality.

You can use usb-gadget-test commandline utility to send keystrokes and mouse movements to your PC. I want to create a remote admin app later, which will send key events and receive video from camera.

Kernel patch, binaries and instructions: https://github.com/pelya/android-keyboard-gadget

Edit: I've published a proper app to Google Play, if your Nexus 7 is rooted you can flash kernel right from the app, and send keypresses with it.

How to use orderby with 2 fields in linq?

What is NODE_ENV and how to use it in Express?

NODE_ENV is an environment variable made popular by the express web server framework. When a node application is run, it can check the value of the environment variable and do different things based on the value. NODE_ENV specifically is used (by convention) to state whether a particular environment is a production or a development environment. A common use-case is running additional debugging or logging code if running in a development environment.

Accessing NODE_ENV

You can use the following code to access the environment variable yourself so that you can perform your own checks and logic:

var environment = process.env.NODE_ENV

Assume production if you don't recognise the value:

var isDevelopment = environment === 'development'

if (isDevelopment) {
  setUpMoreVerboseLogging()
}

You can alternatively using express' app.get('env') function, but note that this is NOT RECOMMENDED as it defaults to "development", which may result in development code being accidentally run in a production environment - it's much safer if your app throws an error if this important value is not set (or if preferred, defaults to production logic as above).

Be aware that if you haven't explicitly set NODE_ENV for your environment, it will be undefined if you access it from process.env, there is no default.

Setting NODE_ENV

How to actually set the environment variable varies from operating system to operating system, and also depends on your user setup.

If you want to set the environment variable as a one-off, you can do so from the command line:

  • linux & mac: export NODE_ENV=production
  • windows: $env:NODE_ENV = 'production'

In the long term, you should persist this so that it isn't unset if you reboot - rather than list all the possible methods to do this, I'll let you search how to do that yourself!

Convention has dictated that there are two 'main' values you should use for NODE_ENV, either production or development, all lowercase. There's nothing to stop you from using other values, (test, for example, if you wish to use some different logic when running automated tests), but be aware that if you are using third-party modules, they may explicitly compare with 'production' or 'development' to determine what to do, so there may be side effects that aren't immediately obvious.

Finally, note that it's a really bad idea to try to set NODE_ENV from within a node application itself - if you do, it will only be applied to the process from which it was set, so things probably won't work like you'd expect them to. Don't do it - you'll regret it.

HTML CSS Button Positioning

Use margins instead of line-height and then apply float to the buttons. By default they are displaying as inline-block, so when one is pushed down the hole line is pushed down with him. Float fixes this:

How to change fontFamily of TextView in Android

The valid value of android:fontFamily is defined in /system/etc/system_fonts.xml(4.x) or /system/etc/fonts.xml(5.x). But Device Manufacturer might modify it, so the actual font used by setting fontFamily value depends on the above-mentioned file of the specified device.

In AOSP, the Arial font is valid but must be defined using "arial" not "Arial", for example android:fontFamily="arial". Have a qucik look at Kitkat's system_fonts.xml

    <family>
    <nameset>
        <name>sans-serif</name>
        <name>arial</name>
        <name>helvetica</name>
        <name>tahoma</name>
        <name>verdana</name>
    </nameset>
    <fileset>
        <file>Roboto-Regular.ttf</file>
        <file>Roboto-Bold.ttf</file>
        <file>Roboto-Italic.ttf</file>
        <file>Roboto-BoldItalic.ttf</file>
    </fileset>
</family>

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

There are three relevant xml-attributes for defining a "font" in layout--android:fontFamily, android:typeface and android:textStyle. The combination of "fontFamily" and "textStyle" or "typeface" and "textStyle" can be used to change the appearance of font in text, so does used alone. Code snippet in TextView.java like this:

    private void setTypefaceFromAttrs(String familyName, int typefaceIndex, int styleIndex) {
    Typeface tf = null;
    if (familyName != null) {
        tf = Typeface.create(familyName, styleIndex);
        if (tf != null) {
            setTypeface(tf);
            return;
        }
    }
    switch (typefaceIndex) {
        case SANS:
            tf = Typeface.SANS_SERIF;
            break;

        case SERIF:
            tf = Typeface.SERIF;
            break;

        case MONOSPACE:
            tf = Typeface.MONOSPACE;
            break;
    }
    setTypeface(tf, styleIndex);
}

    public void setTypeface(Typeface tf, int style) {
    if (style > 0) {
        if (tf == null) {
            tf = Typeface.defaultFromStyle(style);
        } else {
            tf = Typeface.create(tf, style);
        }

        setTypeface(tf);
        // now compute what (if any) algorithmic styling is needed
        int typefaceStyle = tf != null ? tf.getStyle() : 0;
        int need = style & ~typefaceStyle;
        mTextPaint.setFakeBoldText((need & Typeface.BOLD) != 0);
        mTextPaint.setTextSkewX((need & Typeface.ITALIC) != 0 ? -0.25f : 0);
    } else {
        mTextPaint.setFakeBoldText(false);
        mTextPaint.setTextSkewX(0);
        setTypeface(tf);
    }
}

From the code We can see:

  1. if "fontFamily" is set, then the "typeface" will be ignored.
  2. "typeface" has standard and limited valid values. In fact, the values are "normal" "sans" "serif" and "monospace", they can be found in system_fonts.xml(4.x) or fonts.xml(5.x). Actually both "normal" and "sans" are the default font of system.
  3. "fontFamily" can be used to set all fonts of build-in fonts, while "typeface" only provide the typical fonts of "sans-serif" "serif" and "monospace"(the three main category of font type in the world).
  4. When only set "textStyle", We actually set the default font and the specified style. The effective value are "normal" "bold" "italic" and "bold | italic".

Android ListView headers

What I did to make the Date (e.g December 01, 2016) as header. I used the StickyHeaderListView library

https://github.com/emilsjolander/StickyListHeaders

Convert the date to long in millis [do not include the time] and make it as the header Id.

@Override
public long getHeaderId(int position) {
    return <date in millis>;
}

"unrecognized selector sent to instance" error in Objective-C

Another reason/solution to add to the list. This one is caused by iOS6.0 (and/or bad programming). In older versions the selector would match if the parameter types matched, but in iOS 6.0 I got crashes in previously working code where the name of the parameter wasn't correct.

I was doing something like

[objectName methodName:@"somestring" lat:latValue lng:lngValue];

but in the definition (both .h and .m) I had

(viod) methodName:(NSString *) latitude:(double)latitude longitude:(double)longitude;

This worked fine on iOS5 but not on 6, even the exact same build deployed to different devices.

I don't get why the compiler coudn't tell me this, anyway - problem soled.

CSS centred header image

If you set the margin to be margin:0 auto the image will be centered.

This will give top + bottom a margin of 0, and left and right a margin of 'auto'. Since the div has a width (200px), the image will be 200px wide and the browser will auto set the left and right margin to half of what is left on the page, which will result in the image being centered.

How to save username and password in Git?

If you are using the Git Credential Manager on Windows...

git config -l should show:

credential.helper=manager

However, if you are not getting prompted for a credential then follow these steps:

  1. Open Control Panel from the Start menu
  2. Select User Accounts
  3. Select Manage your credentials in the left hand menu
  4. Delete any credentials related to Git or GitHub

Also ensure you have not set HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY, NO_PROXY environmental variables if you have proxy and your Git server is on the internal network.

You can also test Git fetch/push/pull using git-gui which links to credential manager binaries in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Programs\Git\mingw64\libexec\git-core

How to implement and do OCR in a C# project?

Some online API's work pretty well: ocr.space and Google Cloud Vision. Both of these are free, as long as you do less than 1000 OCR's per month. You can drag & drop an image to do a quick manual test to see how they perform for your images.

I find OCR.space easier to use (no messing around with nuget libraries), but, for my purpose, Google Cloud Vision provided slightly better results than OCR.space.

Google Cloud Vision example:

GoogleCredential cred = GoogleCredential.FromJson(json);
Channel channel = new Channel(ImageAnnotatorClient.DefaultEndpoint.Host, ImageAnnotatorClient.DefaultEndpoint.Port, cred.ToChannelCredentials());
ImageAnnotatorClient client = ImageAnnotatorClient.Create(channel);
Image image = Image.FromStream(stream);

EntityAnnotation googleOcrText = client.DetectText(image).First();
Console.Write(googleOcrText.Description);

OCR.space example:

string uri = $"https://api.ocr.space/parse/imageurl?apikey=helloworld&url={imageUri}";
string responseString = WebUtilities.DoGetRequest(uri);
OcrSpaceResult result = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<OcrSpaceResult>(responseString);
if ((!result.IsErroredOnProcessing) && !String.IsNullOrEmpty(result.ParsedResults[0].ParsedText))
  return result.ParsedResults[0].ParsedText;

Hello World in Python

print("Hello, World!")

You are probably using Python 3.0, where print is now a function (hence the parenthesis) instead of a statement.

How to determine when a Git branch was created?

very simple

In the address bar of your web browser, type the following URL and press the Enter key to retrieve information of a GitHub repository.

https://api.github.com/repos/{:owner}/{:repository}

Note! In the URL above, replace the {:owner} and {:repository} parts with the values that can be found in the URL of the GitHub repository for which you want to know the creation date. For example, if the URL of the repository is https://github.com/ArthurGareginyan/batch-rename/, then the URL of it’s information will be https://api.github.com/repos/ArthurGareginyan/batch-rename.

Easiest way to flip a boolean value?

Clearly you need a flexible solution that can support types masquerading as boolean. The following allows for that:

template<typename T>    bool Flip(const T& t);

You can then specialize this for different types that might pretend to be boolean. For example:

template<>  bool Flip<bool>(const bool& b)  { return !b; }
template<>  bool Flip<int>(const int& i)    { return !(i == 0); }

An example of using this construct:

if(Flip(false))  { printf("flipped false\n"); }
if(!Flip(true))  { printf("flipped true\n"); }

if(Flip(0))  { printf("flipped 0\n"); }
if(!Flip(1)) { printf("flipped 1\n"); }

No, I'm not serious.

VBA: Counting rows in a table (list object)

MsgBox tbl.DataBodyRange.Rows.Count
Set tbl = Nothing

AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute

I ran into this problem when I checked out an older version of a repository from git. Git replaced my .py files, but left the untracked .pyc files. Since the .py files and .pyc files were out of sync, the import command in a .py file could not find the corresponding module in the .pyc files.

The solution was simply to delete the .pyc files, and let them be automatically regenerated.

handling DATETIME values 0000-00-00 00:00:00 in JDBC

Alternative answer, you can use this JDBC URL directly in your datasource configuration:

jdbc:mysql://yourserver:3306/yourdatabase?zeroDateTimeBehavior=convertToNull

Edit:

Source: MySQL Manual

Datetimes with all-zero components (0000-00-00 ...) — These values can not be represented reliably in Java. Connector/J 3.0.x always converted them to NULL when being read from a ResultSet.

Connector/J 3.1 throws an exception by default when these values are encountered as this is the most correct behavior according to the JDBC and SQL standards. This behavior can be modified using the zeroDateTimeBehavior configuration property. The allowable values are:

  • exception (the default), which throws an SQLException with an SQLState of S1009.
  • convertToNull, which returns NULL instead of the date.
  • round, which rounds the date to the nearest closest value which is 0001-01-01.

Update: Alexander reported a bug affecting mysql-connector-5.1.15 on that feature. See CHANGELOGS on the official website.

How to add a custom right-click menu to a webpage?

You should remember if you want to use the Firefox only solution, if you want to add it to the whole document you should add contextmenu="mymenu" to the <html> tag not to the body tag.
You should pay attention to this.

Calling a method inside another method in same class

Java implicitly assumes a reference to the current object for methods called like this. So

// Test2.java
public class Test2 {
    public void testMethod() {
        testMethod2();
    }

    // ...
}

Is exactly the same as

// Test2.java
public class Test2 {
    public void testMethod() {
        this.testMethod2();
    }

    // ...
}

I prefer the second version to make more clear what you want to do.

Getting output of system() calls in Ruby

Another way is:

f = open("|ls")
foo = f.read()

Note that's the "pipe" character before "ls" in open. This can also be used to feed data into the programs standard input as well as reading its standard output.

Jquery href click - how can I fire up an event?

You are binding the click event to anchors with an href attribute with value sign_new.

Either bind anchors with class sign_new or bind anchors with href value #sign_up. I would prefer the former.

In python, how do I cast a class object to a dict

It's hard to say without knowing the whole context of the problem, but I would not override __iter__.

I would implement __what_goes_here__ on the class.

Zip folder in C#

Following code uses a third-party ZIP component from Rebex:

// add content of the local directory C:\Data\
// to the root directory in the ZIP archive
// (ZIP archive C:\archive.zip doesn't have to exist)
Rebex.IO.Compression.ZipArchive.Add(@"C:\archive.zip", @"C:\Data\*", "");

Or if you want to add more folders without need to open and close archive multiple times:

using Rebex.IO.Compression;
...

// open the ZIP archive from an existing file
ZipArchive zip = new ZipArchive(@"C:\archive.zip", ArchiveOpenMode.OpenOrCreate);

// add first folder
zip.Add(@"c:\first\folder\*","\first\folder");

// add second folder
zip.Add(@"c:\second\folder\*","\second\folder");

// close the archive
zip.Close(ArchiveSaveAction.Auto);

You can download the ZIP component here.

Using a free, LGPL licensed SharpZipLib is a common alternative.

How to make flutter app responsive according to different screen size?

Using MediaQuery class:

MediaQueryData queryData;
queryData = MediaQuery.of(context);

MediaQuery: Establishes a subtree in which media queries resolve to the given data.

MediaQueryData: Information about a piece of media (e.g., a window).

To get Device Pixel Ratio:

queryData.devicePixelRatio

To get width and height of the device screen:

queryData.size.width
queryData.size.height

To get text scale factor:

queryData.textScaleFactor

Using AspectRatio class:

From doc:

A widget that attempts to size the child to a specific aspect ratio.

The widget first tries the largest width permitted by the layout constraints. The height of the widget is determined by applying the given aspect ratio to the width, expressed as a ratio of width to height.

For example, a 16:9 width:height aspect ratio would have a value of 16.0/9.0. If the maximum width is infinite, the initial width is determined by applying the aspect ratio to the maximum height.

Now consider a second example, this time with an aspect ratio of 2.0 and layout constraints that require the width to be between 0.0 and 100.0 and the height to be between 0.0 and 100.0. We'll select a width of 100.0 (the biggest allowed) and a height of 50.0 (to match the aspect ratio).

//example
new Center(
 child: new AspectRatio(
  aspectRatio: 100 / 100,
  child: new Container(
    decoration: new BoxDecoration(
      shape: BoxShape.rectangle,
      color: Colors.orange,
      )
    ),
  ),

You need to specify workseet. Change line

If Worksheet.Cells(i, 1).Value = "X" Then

to

If Worksheets("Sheet2").Cells(i, 1).Value = "X" Then

UPD:

Try to use following code (but it's not the best approach. As @SiddharthRout suggested, consider about using Autofilter):

Sub LastRowInOneColumn()
   Dim LastRow As Long
   Dim i As Long, j As Long

   'Find the last used row in a Column: column A in this example
   With Worksheets("Sheet2")
      LastRow = .Cells(.Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row
   End With

   MsgBox (LastRow)
   'first row number where you need to paste values in Sheet1'
   With Worksheets("Sheet1")
      j = .Cells(.Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row + 1
   End With

   For i = 1 To LastRow
       With Worksheets("Sheet2")
           If .Cells(i, 1).Value = "X" Then
               .Rows(i).Copy Destination:=Worksheets("Sheet1").Range("A" & j)
               j = j + 1
           End If
       End With
   Next i

What is log4j's default log file dumping path

By default, Log4j logs to standard output and that means you should be able to see log messages on your Eclipse's console view. To log to a file you need to use a FileAppender explicitly by defining it in a log4j.properties file in your classpath.

Create the following log4j.properties file in your classpath. This allows you to log your message to both a file as well as your console.

log4j.rootLogger=debug, stdout, file

log4j.appender.stdout=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender
log4j.appender.stdout.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout

# Pattern to output the caller's file name and line number.
log4j.appender.stdout.layout.ConversionPattern=%5p [%t] (%F:%L) - %m%n

log4j.appender.file=org.apache.log4j.FileAppender
log4j.appender.file.File=example.log
log4j.appender.file.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
log4j.appender.file.layout.ConversionPattern=%p %t %c - %m%n

Note: The above creates an example.log in your current working directory (i.e. Eclipse's project directory) so that the same log4j.properties could work with different projects without overwriting each other's logs.

Prevent Sequelize from outputting SQL to the console on execution of query?

I solved a lot of issues by using the following code. Issues were : -

  1. Not connecting with database
  2. Database connection Rejection issues
  3. Getting rid of logs in console (specific for this).
const sequelize = new Sequelize("test", "root", "root", {
  host: "127.0.0.1",
  dialect: "mysql",
  port: "8889",
  connectionLimit: 10,
  socketPath: "/Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.sock",
  // It will disable logging
  logging: false
});

Reading/Writing a MS Word file in PHP

You can use Antiword, it is a free MS Word reader for Linux and most popular OS.

$document_file = 'c:\file.doc';
$text_from_doc = shell_exec('/usr/local/bin/antiword '.$document_file);

Convert an image to grayscale

Bitmap d = new Bitmap(c.Width, c.Height);

for (int i = 0; i < c.Width; i++)
{
    for (int x = 0; x < c.Height; x++)
    {
        Color oc = c.GetPixel(i, x);
        int grayScale = (int)((oc.R * 0.3) + (oc.G * 0.59) + (oc.B * 0.11));
        Color nc = Color.FromArgb(oc.A, grayScale, grayScale, grayScale);
        d.SetPixel(i, x, nc);
    }
}

This way it also keeps the alpha channel.
Enjoy.

PHP - Get key name of array value

If you have a value and want to find the key, use array_search() like this:

$arr = array ('first' => 'a', 'second' => 'b', );
$key = array_search ('a', $arr);

$key will now contain the key for value 'a' (that is, 'first').

How to use protractor to check if an element is visible?

Here are the few code snippet which can be used for framework which use Typescript, protractor, jasmine

browser.wait(until.visibilityOf(OversightAutomationOR.lblContentModal), 3000, "Modal text is present");

// Asserting a text

OversightAutomationOR.lblContentModal.getText().then(text => {

Compare dates in MySQL

That is SQL Server syntax for converting a date to a string. In MySQL you can use the DATE function to extract the date from a datetime:

SELECT *
FROM players
WHERE DATE(us_reg_date) BETWEEN '2000-07-05' AND '2011-11-10'

But if you want to take advantage of an index on the column us_reg_date you might want to try this instead:

SELECT *
FROM players
WHERE us_reg_date >= '2000-07-05'
  AND us_reg_date < '2011-11-10' + interval 1 day

Set font-weight using Bootstrap classes

You should use bootstarp's variables to control your font-weight if you want a more customized value and/or you're following a scheme that needs to be repeated ; Variables are used throughout the entire project as a way to centralize and share commonly used values like colors, spacing, or font stacks;

you can find all the documentation at http://getbootstrap.com/css.

Changing API level Android Studio

In Android studio open build.gradle and edit the following section:

defaultConfig {
    applicationId "com.demo.myanswer"
    minSdkVersion 14
    targetSdkVersion 23
    versionCode 1
    versionName "1.0"
}

here you can change minSdkVersion from 12 to 14

How can I explicitly free memory in Python?

You can't explicitly free memory. What you need to do is to make sure you don't keep references to objects. They will then be garbage collected, freeing the memory.

In your case, when you need large lists, you typically need to reorganize the code, typically using generators/iterators instead. That way you don't need to have the large lists in memory at all.

Changing default shell in Linux

Try linux command chsh.

The detailed command is chsh -s /bin/bash. It will prompt you to enter your password. Your default login shell is /bin/bash now. You must log out and log back in to see this change.

The following is quoted from man page:

The chsh command changes the user login shell. This determines the name of the users initial login command. A normal user may only change the login shell for her own account, the superuser may change the login shell for any account

This command will change the default login shell permanently.

Note: If your user account is remote such as on Kerberos authentication (e.g. Enterprise RHEL) then you will not be able to use chsh.

Detect Android phone via Javascript / jQuery

I think Michal's answer is the best, but we can take it a step further and dynamically load an Android CSS as per the original question:

var isAndroid = /(android)/i.test(navigator.userAgent);
if (isAndroid) {
    var css = document.createElement("link");
    css.setAttribute("rel", "stylesheet");
    css.setAttribute("type", "text/css");
    css.setAttribute("href", "/css/android.css");
    document.body.appendChild(css);
}

Sass Nesting for :hover does not work

You can easily debug such things when you go through the generated CSS. In this case the pseudo-selector after conversion has to be attached to the class. Which is not the case. Use "&".

http://sass-lang.com/documentation/file.SASS_REFERENCE.html#parent-selector

.class {
    margin:20px;
    &:hover {
        color:yellow;
    }

Commenting in a Bash script inside a multiline command

In addition to the examples by DigitalRoss, here's another form that you can use if you prefer $() instead of backticks `

echo abc $(: comment) \
     def $(: comment) \
     xyz

Of course, you can use the colon syntax with backticks as well:

echo abc `: comment` \
     def `: comment` \
     xyz

Additional Notes

The reason $(#comment) doesn't work is because once it sees the #, it treats the rest of the line as comments, including the closing parentheses: comment). So the parentheses is never closed.

Backticks parse differently and will detect the closing backtick even after a #.

Set variable with multiple values and use IN

You need a table variable:

declare @values table
(
    Value varchar(1000)

insert into @values values ('A')
insert into @values values ('B')
insert into @values values ('C')

select blah
from foo
where myField in (select value from @values)

    {
        int mSelectedRowIndex = dgvProducts.SelectedCells[0].RowIndex;

        DataGridViewRow mSelectedRow = dgvProducts.Rows[mSelectedRowIndex];

        string mCatagoryName = Convert.ToString(mSelectedRow.Cells[1].Value);

        SomeOtherMethod(mProductName); // Passing the name to where ever you need it

        this.close();
    }
}

How to encode the plus (+) symbol in a URL

The + character has a special meaning in a URL => it means whitespace - . If you want to use the literal + sign, you need to URL encode it to %2b:

body=Hi+there%2bHello+there

Here's an example of how you could properly generate URLs in .NET:

var uriBuilder = new UriBuilder("https://mail.google.com/mail");

var values = HttpUtility.ParseQueryString(string.Empty);
values["view"] = "cm";
values["tf"] = "0";
values["to"] = "[email protected]";
values["su"] = "some subject";
values["body"] = "Hi there+Hello there";

uriBuilder.Query = values.ToString();

Console.WriteLine(uriBuilder.ToString());

The result

https://mail.google.com:443/mail?view=cm&tf=0&to=someemail%40somedomain.com&su=some+subject&body=Hi+there%2bHello+there

Missing MVC template in Visual Studio 2015

I'm going to add my 2 cents in case someone finds himself in a position like mine. I too was looking for an MVC project type and could not see it. All I saw is a "Web Application Project". So I freaked out and rushed into trying all solutions listed on this page.

But.

IT IS ACTUALLY THERE.

Can I use a binary literal in C or C++?

You can also use inline assembly like this:

int i;

__asm {
    mov eax, 00000000000000000000000000000000b
    mov i,   eax
}

std::cout << i;

Okay, it might be somewhat overkill, but it works.

C Linking Error: undefined reference to 'main'

You should provide output file name after -o option. In your case runexp.o is treated as output file name, not input object file and thus your main function is undefined.

Adding click event for a button created dynamically using jQuery

Use

will give you the value of the button

Define constant variables in C++ header

You generally shouldn't use e.g. const int in a header file, if it's included in several source files. That is because then the variables will be defined once per source file (translation units technically speaking) because global const variables are implicitly static, taking up more memory than required.

You should instead have a special source file, Constants.cpp that actually defines the variables, and then have the variables declared as extern in the header file.

Something like this header file:

// Protect against multiple inclusions in the same source file
#ifndef CONSTANTS_H
#define CONSTANTS_H

extern const int CONSTANT_1;

#endif

And this in a source file:

const int CONSTANT_1 = 123;

How can I call a shell command in my Perl script?

How to run a shell script from a Perl program

1. Using system system($command, @arguments);

For example:

system("sh", "script.sh", "--help" );

system("sh script.sh --help");

System will execute the $command with @arguments and return to your script when finished. You may check $! for certain errors passed to the OS by the external application. Read the documentation for system for the nuances of how various invocations are slightly different.

2. Using exec

This is very similar to the use of system, but it will terminate your script upon execution. Again, read the documentation for exec for more.

3. Using backticks or qx//

my $output = `script.sh --option`;

my $output = qx/script.sh --option/;

The backtick operator and it's equivalent qx//, excute the command and options inside the operator and return that commands output to STDOUT when it finishes.

There are also ways to run external applications through creative use of open, but this is advanced use; read the documentation for more.

Makefile: How to correctly include header file and its directory?

The preprocessor is looking for StdCUtil/split.h in

and in

  • $INC_DIR (i.e. ../StdCUtil/ = /root/Core/../StdCUtil/ = /root/StdCUtil/). So ../StdCUtil/ + StdCUtil/split.h = ../StdCUtil/StdCUtil/split.h and the file is missing

You can fix the error changing the $INC_DIR variable (best solution):

$INC_DIR = ../

or the include directive:

#include "split.h"

but in this way you lost the "path syntax" that makes it very clear what namespace or module the header file belongs to.

Reference:

EDIT/UPDATE

It should also be

CXX = g++
CXXFLAGS = -c -Wall -I$(INC_DIR)

...

%.o: %.cpp $(DEPS)
    $(CXX) -o $@ $< $(CXXFLAGS)

What are the benefits to marking a field as `readonly` in C#?

Be careful with private readonly arrays. If these are exposed a client as an object (you might do this for COM interop as I did) the client can manipulate array values. Use the Clone() method when returning an array as an object.

Why is my Spring @Autowired field null?

In simple words there are mainly two reasons for an @Autowired field to be null

  • YOUR CLASS IS NOT A SPRING BEAN.

  • THE FIELD IS NOT A BEAN.

org.hibernate.hql.internal.ast.QuerySyntaxException: table is not mapped

In Apache Derby DB, refrain from using table names as "user" or so because they are reserved keywords on Apache Derby but will work fine on MySql.

In the Query, you must specify the name of the Entity class that you want to fetch the data from in the FROM clause of the Query.

List<User> users=session.createQuery("from User").list();

Here, User is the name of my Java Entity class(Consider the casing of the name as in Java it matters.)

How do I import a pre-existing Java project into Eclipse and get up and running?

I think you'll have to import the project via the file->import wizard:

http://www.coderanch.com/t/419556/vc/Open-existing-project-Eclipse

It's not the last step, but it will start you on your way.

I also feel your pain - there is really no excuse for making it so difficult to do a simple thing like opening an existing project. I truly hope that the Eclipse designers focus on making the IDE simpler to use (tho I applaud their efforts at trying different approaches - but please, Eclipse designers, if you are listening, never complicate something simple).

jQuery - Dynamically Create Button and Attach Event Handler

Your problem is that you're converting the button into an HTML snippet when you add it to the table, but that snippet is not the same object as the one that has the click handler on it.

$("#myButton").click(function () {
    var test = $('<button>Test</button>').click(function () {

    var tr = $('<tr>').insertBefore('#addNodeTable tr:last');
    var td = $('<td>').append(test).appendTo(tr);
});

How to create a custom string representation for a class object?

Just adding to all the fine answers, my version with decoration:

from __future__ import print_function
import six

def classrep(rep):
    def decorate(cls):
        class RepMetaclass(type):
            def __repr__(self):
                return rep

        class Decorated(six.with_metaclass(RepMetaclass, cls)):
            pass

        return Decorated
    return decorate

@classrep("Wahaha!")
class C(object):
    pass

print(C)

stdout:

Wahaha!

The down sides:

  1. You can't declare C without a super class (no class C:)
  2. C instances will be instances of some strange derivation, so it's probably a good idea to add a __repr__ for the instances as well.

Exercises to improve my Java programming skills

If you wanted to learn some GUI, may be tic tac toe is good. Even for console, I still find that is a fun problem. Not challenging but a little bit fun. Later you can advance some other games or port that game to GUI, client server or java applet for the web. I think if you want to learn something and get fun as well, game is a good choice:)

Cell spacing in UICollectionView

So in UICollectionViewDelegateFlowLayout, change implement the next methods, the trick is u have to use both of them, and the documentation was not really pointing me to think in that direction. :D

When is a language considered a scripting language?

Your criteria sounds about right, but is always a bit fuzzy. For instance, Java is both compiled (to bytecode) and then interpreted (by the JVM). Yet it is normally not categorized as a scripting language.

This might be because Java is statically typed. Whereas JavaScript, Ruby, Python, Perl, etc. are not (all of which are often called scripting languages).

What is the difference between Forking and Cloning on GitHub?

In case you did what the questioner hinted at (forgot to fork and just locally cloned a repo, made changes and now need to issue a pull request) you can get back on track:

  1. fork the repo you want to send pull request to
  2. push your local changes to your remote
  3. issue pull request

In Android, how do I set margins in dp programmatically?

This method will let you set the Margin in DP

public void setMargin(Context con,ViewGroup.LayoutParams params,int dp) {

        final float scale = con.getResources().getDisplayMetrics().density;
        // convert the DP into pixel
        int pixel =  (int)(dp * scale + 0.5f);

        ViewGroup.MarginLayoutParams s =(ViewGroup.MarginLayoutParams)params;
        s.setMargins(pixel,pixel,pixel,pixel);

        yourView.setLayoutParams(params);
}

UPDATE

You can change the parameter that suits your need.

How to remove files that are listed in the .gitignore but still on the repository?

I can't say it's an appropriate solution but you can try this.

Steps

  • I am hoping that you have already cloned your repo.
  • Now copy the file somewhere outside of your project.
  • Add that filename with a location in gitigonre file.
  • Remove that file from your local project.
  • Push your code to remote origin.
  • And now add that copied file into your project it'll be ignored.

This is just a hack solution if you want to maintain the history and don't to create mass in it.

If you don't want to use this solution please kindly ignore and try to avoid devote it. Because I am really trying to increase my score on this side

Deprecated meaning?

If there are true answers to those questions, it would be different per software vendor and would be defined by the vendor. I don't know of any true industry standards that are followed with regards to this matter.

Historically with Microsoft, they'll mark something as deprecated and state they'll remove it in a future version. That can be several versions before they actually get rid of it though.

Image change every 30 seconds - loop

setInterval function is the one that has to be used. Here is an example for the same without any fancy fading option. Simple Javascript that does an image change every 30 seconds. I have assumed that the images were kept in a separate images folder and hence _images/ is present at the beginning of every image. You can have your own path as required to be set.

CODE:

var im = document.getElementById("img");

var images = ["_images/image1.jpg","_images/image2.jpg","_images/image3.jpg"];
var index=0;

function changeImage()
{
  im.setAttribute("src", images[index]);
  index++;
  if(index >= images.length)
  {
    index=0;
  }
}

setInterval(changeImage, 30000);

Installing Python 3 on RHEL

In addition to gecco's answer I would change step 3 from:

./configure

to:

./configure --prefix=/opt/python3

Then after installation you could also:

# ln -s /opt/python3/bin/python3 /usr/bin/python3

It is to ensure that installation will not conflict with python installed with yum.

See explanation I have found on Internet:

Display loading image while post with ajax

Let's say you have a tag someplace on the page which contains your loading message:

<div id='loadingmessage' style='display:none'>

function getData(p){
    var page=p;
    $('#loadingmessage').show(); // show the loading message.
    $.ajax({
        url: "loadData.php?id=<? echo $id; ?>",
        type: "POST",
        cache: false,
        data: "&page="+ page,
        success : function(html){
            $(".content").html(html);
            $('#loadingmessage').hide(); // hide the loading message
        }
    });

RS256 vs HS256: What's the difference?

There is a difference in performance.

Simply put HS256 is about 1 order of magnitude faster than RS256 for verification but about 2 orders of magnitude faster than RS256 for issuing (signing).

 640,251  91,464.3 ops/s
  86,123  12,303.3 ops/s (RS256 verify)
   7,046   1,006.5 ops/s (RS256 sign)

Don't get hung up on the actual numbers, just think of them with respect of each other.

How can bcrypt have built-in salts?

I believe that phrase should have been worded as follows:

bcrypt has salts built into the generated hashes to prevent rainbow table attacks.

The bcrypt utility itself does not appear to maintain a list of salts. Rather, salts are generated randomly and appended to the output of the function so that they are remembered later on (according to the Java implementation of bcrypt). Put another way, the "hash" generated by bcrypt is not just the hash. Rather, it is the hash and the salt concatenated.

Attach the Java Source Code

What worked for me (with JDK7) was the following:

  1. Download the openjdk-xy-sources.jar from GrepCode,
  2. rename the file to src.zip,
  3. copy src.zip to the root folder of the JRE/JDK added to eclipse (the one with bin and lib folders in it)
  4. restart eclipse

Alternatively, if you don't want to write to your JDK folder, you could also attach src.zip to (at least) rt.jar in eclipse in the Window | Preferences menu in Java | Installed JREs.

If you're not comfortable with downloading the sources from GrepCode, you could also get them from openJDK directly. This requires requires a bit more effort, though. Replace step one above by the following steps:

  1. Download the JDK sources from here,
  2. extract all folders from the zip file's *openjdk\jdk\src\share\classes* folder,
  3. create a file src.zip and add these folders to it,
  4. copy src.zip to the root folder of the JRE/JDK added to eclipse (the one with bin and lib folders in it)
  5. restart eclipse

A third alternative to acquire src.zip is to download the unofficial OpenJDK builds from here. The src.zip is contained within the downloaded zip.

Change border color on <select> HTML form

No, the <select> control is a system-level control, not a client-level control in IE. A few versions back it didn't even play nicely-with z-index, putting itself on top of virtually everything.

To do anything fancy you'll have to emulate the functionality using CSS and your own elements.

Powershell: Get FQDN Hostname

to get the fqdn corresponding to the first IpAddress, it took this command:

PS C:\Windows\system32> [System.Net.Dns]::GetHostByAddress([System.Net.Dns]::GetHostByName($env:computerName).AddressList[0]).HostName
WIN-1234567890.fritz.box

where [System.Net.Dns]::GetHostByName($env:computerName).AddressList[0] represents the first IpAddress-Object and [System.Net.Dns]::GetHostByAddress gets the dns-object out of it.

If I took the winning solution on my standalone Windows, I got only:

PS C:\Windows\system32> (Get-WmiObject win32_computersystem).DNSHostName+"."+(Get-WmiObject win32_computersystem).Domain
WIN-1234567890.WORKGROUP

How to set time to midnight for current day?

Related, so I thought I would post for others. If you want to find the UTC of the start of today (for your timezone) the following code works for any UTC offset (-23.5 thru +23.5). This looks like we add X hours then subtract X hours, but the important thing is the ".Date" after the add.

double utcOffset= 10.0; // Set to your UTC offset in hours (eg. Melbourne Australia)
var now = DateTime.UtcNow;

var startOfToday = now.AddHours(utcOffset - 24.0).Date;
startOfToday = startOfToday.AddHours(24.0 - utcOffset);

Change the Theme in Jupyter Notebook?

After I changed the theme it behaved strangely. The font size was small, cannot see the toolbar and I really didn't like the new look.

For those who want to restore the original theme, you can do it as follows:

jt -r

You need to restart Jupyter the first time you do it and later refresh is enough to enable the new theme.

How to write a SQL DELETE statement with a SELECT statement in the WHERE clause?

Did something like that once:

CREATE TABLE exclusions(excl VARCHAR(250));
INSERT INTO exclusions(excl)

       ('%Placeholders%'),
       ('%Stages%'),
       ('%master_stage_1205x465%'),

       ('%chosen-sprite.png'),
('%WebResource.axd');

Declare and Initialize String Array in VBA

Dim myStringArray() As String
*code*
redim myStringArray(size_of_your_array)

Then you can do something static like this:

myStringArray = { item_1, item_2, ... }

Or something iterative like this:

Dim x
For x = 0 To size_of_your_array
    myStringArray(x) = data_source(x).Name
Next x

Alter Table Add Column Syntax

This is how Adding new column to Table

ALTER TABLE [tableName]
ADD ColumnName Datatype

E.g

ALTER TABLE [Emp]
ADD Sr_No Int

And If you want to make it auto incremented

ALTER TABLE [Emp]
ADD Sr_No Int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL

Grab a segment of an array in Java without creating a new array on heap

@unique72 answer as a simple function or line, you may need to replace Object, with the respective class type you wish to 'slice'. Two variants are given to suit various needs.

/// Extract out array from starting position onwards
public static Object[] sliceArray( Object[] inArr, int startPos ) {
    return Arrays.asList(inArr).subList(startPos, inArr.length).toArray();
}

/// Extract out array from starting position to ending position
public static Object[] sliceArray( Object[] inArr, int startPos, int endPos ) {
    return Arrays.asList(inArr).subList(startPos, endPos).toArray();
}

parent & child with position fixed, parent overflow:hidden bug

You could consider using CSS clip: rect(top, right, bottom, left); to clip a fixed positioned element to a parent. See demo at http://jsfiddle.net/lmeurs/jf3t0fmf/.

Beware, use with care!

Though the clip style is widely supported, main disadvantages are that:

  1. The parent's position cannot be static or relative (one can use an absolutely positioned parent inside a relatively positioned container);
  2. The rect coordinates do not support percentages, though the auto value equals 100%, ie. clip: rect(auto, auto, auto, auto);;
  3. Possibillities with child elements are limited in at least IE11 & Chrome34, ie. we cannot set the position of child elements to relative or absolute or use CSS3 transform like scale.

See http://tympanus.net/codrops/2013/01/16/understanding-the-css-clip-property/ for more info.

EDIT: Chrome seems to handle positioning of and CSS3 transforms on child elements a lot better when applying backface-visibility, so just to be sure we added:

-webkit-backface-visibility: hidden;
-moz-backface-visibility: hidden;
backface-visibility: hidden;

to the main child element.

Also note that it's not fully supported by older / mobile browsers or it might take some extra effort. See our implementation for the menu at bellafuchsia.com.

  1. IE8 shows the menu well, but menu links are not clickable;
  2. IE9 does not show the menu under the fold;
  3. iOS Safari <5 does not show the menu well;
  4. iOS Safari 5+ repaints the clipped content on scroll after scrolling;
  5. FF (at least 13+), IE10+, Chrome and Chrome for Android seem to play nice.

EDIT 2014-11-02: Demo URL has been updated.

How to change the type of a field?

Convert String field to Integer:

db.db-name.find({field-name: {$exists: true}}).forEach(function(obj) {
    obj.field-name = new NumberInt(obj.field-name);
    db.db-name.save(obj);
});

Convert Integer field to String:

db.db-name.find({field-name: {$exists: true}}).forEach(function(obj) {
    obj.field-name = "" + obj.field-name;
    db.db-name.save(obj);
});

"error: assignment to expression with array type error" when I assign a struct field (C)

typedef struct{
     char name[30];
     char surname[30];
     int age;
} data;

defines that data should be a block of memory that fits 60 chars plus 4 for the int (see note)

[----------------------------,------------------------------,----]
 ^ this is name ^ this is surname ^ this is age

This allocates the memory on the stack.

data s1;

Assignments just copies numbers, sometimes pointers.

This fails

s1.name = "Paulo";

because the compiler knows that s1.name is the start of a struct 64 bytes long, and "Paulo" is a char[] 6 bytes long (6 because of the trailing \0 in C strings)
Thus, trying to assign a pointer to a string into a string.

To copy "Paulo" into the struct at the point name and "Rossi" into the struct at point surname.

memcpy(s1.name,    "Paulo", 6);
memcpy(s1.surname, "Rossi", 6);
s1.age = 1;

You end up with

[Paulo0----------------------,Rossi0-------------------------,0001]

strcpy does the same thing but it knows about \0 termination so does not need the length hardcoded.

Alternatively you can define a struct which points to char arrays of any length.

typedef struct {
  char *name;
  char *surname;
  int age;
} data;

This will create

[----,----,----]

This will now work because you are filling the struct with pointers.

s1.name = "Paulo";
s1.surname = "Rossi";
s1.age = 1;

Something like this

[---4,--10,---1]

Where 4 and 10 are pointers.

Note: the ints and pointers can be different sizes, the sizes 4 above are 32bit as an example.

Connecting to Oracle Database through C#?

Using Nuget

  1. Right click Project, select Manage NuGet packages...
  2. Select the Browse tab, search for Oracle and install Oracle.ManagedDataAccess

Oracle NuGet package

  1. In code use the following command (Ctrl+. to automatically add the using directive).

  2. Note the different DataSource string which in comparison to Java is different.

    // create connection
    OracleConnection con = new OracleConnection();

    // create connection string using builder
    OracleConnectionStringBuilder ocsb = new OracleConnectionStringBuilder();
    ocsb.Password = "autumn117";
    ocsb.UserID = "john";
    ocsb.DataSource = "database.url:port/databasename";

    // connect
    con.ConnectionString = ocsb.ConnectionString;
    con.Open();
    Console.WriteLine("Connection established (" + con.ServerVersion + ")");

When do I need to do "git pull", before or after "git add, git commit"?

You want your change to sit on top of the current state of the remote branch. So probably you want to pull right before you commit yourself. After that, push your changes again.

"Dirty" local files are not an issue as long as there aren't any conflicts with the remote branch. If there are conflicts though, the merge will fail, so there is no risk or danger in pulling before committing local changes.

How to return 2 values from a Java method?

In my opinion the best is to create a new class which constructor is the function you need, e.g.:

public class pairReturn{
        //name your parameters:
        public int sth1;
        public double sth2;
        public pairReturn(int param){
            //place the code of your function, e.g.:
            sth1=param*5;
            sth2=param*10;
        }
    }

Then simply use the constructor as you would use the function:

pairReturn pR = new pairReturn(15);

and you can use pR.sth1, pR.sth2 as "2 results of the function"

Getting the encoding of a Postgres database

If you want to get database encodings:

psql -U postgres -h somehost --list

You'll see something like:

List of databases
           Name         |  Owner   | Encoding
------------------------+----------+----------
db1                     | postgres | UTF8

How do I make my ArrayList Thread-Safe? Another approach to problem in Java?

You can also use synchronized keyword for addFinisher method like this

    //Implement the one method in the RaceListener interface
    public synchronized void addFinisher(RaceCar finisher) {
        finishingOrder.add(finisher);
    }

So you can use ArrayList add method thread-safe with this way.

How to make Excel VBA variables available to multiple macros?

Create a "module" object and declare variables in there. Unlike class-objects that have to be instantiated each time, the module objects are always available. Therefore, a public variable, function, or property in a "module" will be available to all the other objects in the VBA project, macro, Excel formula, or even within a MS Access JET-SQL query def.

Get the string within brackets in Python

How about this ? Example illusrated using a file:

f = open('abc.log','r')
content = f.readlines()
for line in content:
    m = re.search(r"\[(.*?)\]", line)
    print m.group(1)

Hope this helps:

Magic regex : \[(.*?)\]

Explanation:

\[ : [ is a meta char and needs to be escaped if you want to match it literally.

(.*?) : match everything in a non-greedy way and capture it.

\] : ] is a meta char and needs to be escaped if you want to match it literally.

Change GitHub Account username

Yes, this is an old question. But it's misleading, as this was the first result in my search, and both the answers aren't correct anymore.

You can change your Github account name at any time.

To do this, click your profile picture > Settings > Account Settings > Change Username.

Links to your repositories will redirect to the new URLs, but they should be updated on other sites because someone who chooses your abandoned username can override the links. Links to your profile page will be 404'd.

For more information, see the official help page.

And furthermore, if you want to change your username to something else, but that specific username is being taken up by someone else who has been completely inactive for the entire time their account has existed, you can report their account for name squatting.

Those are hexidecimal digits, not characters. One digit = 4 bits.

Comparison of Android Web Service and Networking libraries: OKHTTP, Retrofit and Volley

I'm hoping someone can provide some concrete examples of best use cases for each.

Use Retrofit if you are communicating with a Web service. Use the peer library Picasso if you are downloading images. Use OkHTTP if you need to do HTTP operations that lie outside of Retrofit/Picasso.

Volley roughly competes with Retrofit + Picasso. On the plus side, it is one library. On the minus side, it is one undocumented, an unsupported, "throw the code over the wall and do an I|O presentation on it" library.

EDIT - Volley is now officially supported by Google. Kindly refer Google Developer Guide

From what I've read, seems like OkHTTP is the most robust of the 3

Retrofit uses OkHTTP automatically if available. There is a Gist from Jake Wharton that connects Volley to OkHTTP.

and could handle the requirements of this project (mentioned above).

Probably you will use none of them for "streaming download of audio and video", by the conventional definition of "streaming". Instead, Android's media framework will handle those HTTP requests for you.

That being said, if you are going to attempt to do your own HTTP-based streaming, OkHTTP should handle that scenario; I don't recall how well Volley would handle that scenario. Neither Retrofit nor Picasso are designed for that.

Open Excel file for reading with VBA without display

A much simpler approach that doesn't involve manipulating active windows:

Dim wb As Workbook
Set wb = Workbooks.Open("workbook.xlsx")
wb.Windows(1).Visible = False

From what I can tell the Windows index on the workbook should always be 1. If anyone knows of any race conditions that would make this untrue please let me know.

Git: Find the most recent common ancestor of two branches

git diff master...feature

shows all the new commits of your current (possibly multi-commit) feature branch.

man git-diff documents that:

git diff A...B

is the same as:

git diff $(git merge-base A B) B

but the ... is easier to type and remember.

As mentioned by Dave, the special case of HEAD can be omitted. So:

git diff master...HEAD

is the same as:

git diff master...

which is enough if the current branch is feature.

Finally, remember that order matters! Doing git diff feature...master will show changes that are on master not on feature.

I wish more git commands would support that syntax, but I don't think they do. And some even have different semantics for ...: What are the differences between double-dot ".." and triple-dot "..." in Git commit ranges?

configure Git to accept a particular self-signed server certificate for a particular https remote

Briefly:

  1. Get the self signed certificate
  2. Put it into some (e.g. ~/git-certs/cert.pem) file
  3. Set git to trust this certificate using http.sslCAInfo parameter

In more details:

Get self signed certificate of remote server

Assuming, the server URL is repos.sample.com and you want to access it over port 443.

There are multiple options, how to get it.

Get certificate using openssl

$ openssl s_client -connect repos.sample.com:443

Catch the output into a file cert.pem and delete all but part between (and including) -BEGIN CERTIFICATE- and -END CERTIFICATE-

Content of resulting file ~/git-certs/cert.pem may look like this:

Get certificate using your web browser

I use Redmine with Git repositories and I access the same URL for web UI and for git command line access. This way, I had to add exception for that domain into my web browser.

Using Firefox, I went to Options -> Advanced -> Certificates -> View Certificates -> Servers, found there the selfsigned host, selected it and using Export button I got exactly the same file, as created using openssl.

Note: I was a bit surprised, there is no name of the authority visibly mentioned. This is fine.

Having the trusted certificate in dedicated file

Previous steps shall result in having the certificate in some file. It does not matter, what file it is as long as it is visible to your git when accessing that domain. I used ~/git-certs/cert.pem

Note: If you need more trusted selfsigned certificates, put them into the same file:

-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----
MIIDnzCCAocCBE/xnXAwDQYJKoZIhvcNAQEFBQAwgZMxCzAJBgNVBAYTAkRFMRUw
...........
/27/jIdVQIKvHok2P/u9tvTUQA==
-----END CERTIFICATE-----
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----
AnOtHeRtRuStEdCeRtIfIcAtEgOeShErExxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxw
...........
/27/jIdVQIKvHok2P/u9tvTUQA==
-----END CERTIFICATE-----

This shall work (but I tested it only with single certificate).

Configure git to trust this certificate

$ git config --global http.sslCAInfo /home/javl/git-certs/cert.pem

You may also try to do that system wide, using --system instead of --global.

And test it: You shall now be able communicating with your server without resorting to:

$ git config --global http.sslVerify false #NO NEED TO USE THIS

If you already set your git to ignorance of ssl certificates, unset it:

$ git config --global --unset http.sslVerify

and you may also check, that you did it all correctly, without spelling errors:

$ git config --global --list

what should list all variables, you have set globally. (I mispelled http to htt).

How to set a cookie to expire in 1 hour in Javascript?

You can write this in a more compact way:

var now = new Date();
now.setTime(now.getTime() + 1 * 3600 * 1000);
document.cookie = "name=value; expires=" + now.toUTCString() + "; path=/";

And for someone like me, who wasted an hour trying to figure out why the cookie with expiration is not set up (but without expiration can be set up) in Chrome, here is in answer:

For some strange reason Chrome team decided to ignore cookies from local pages. So if you do this on localhost, you will not be able to see your cookie in Chrome. So either upload it on the server or use another browser.

Display current path in terminal only

If you just want to get the information of current directory, you can type:

pwd

and you don't need to use the Nautilus, or you can use a teamviewer software to remote connect to the computer, you can get everything you want.

How to convert numpy arrays to standard TensorFlow format?

You can use tf.pack (tf.stack in TensorFlow 1.0.0) method for this purpose. Here is how to pack a random image of type numpy.ndarray into a Tensor:

import numpy as np
import tensorflow as tf
random_image = np.random.randint(0,256, (300,400,3))
random_image_tensor = tf.pack(random_image)
tf.InteractiveSession()
evaluated_tensor = random_image_tensor.eval()

UPDATE: to convert a Python object to a Tensor you can use tf.convert_to_tensor function.

Pass a datetime from javascript to c# (Controller)

try this

var date = new Date();
$.ajax(
   {
       type: "POST",
       url: "/Group/Refresh",
       contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
       data: "{ 'MyDate': " + date.getTimezoneOffset() + " }",
       success: function (result) {
           //do something
       },
       error: function (req, status, error) {
           //error
       }
   });

In C#

DateTime.Now.ToUniversalTime().AddMinutes(double.Parse(MyDate)).ToString();

What is android:ems attribute in Edit Text?

Taken from: http://www.w3.org/Style/Examples/007/units:

The em is simply the font size. In an element with a 2in font, 1em thus means 2in. Expressing sizes, such as margins and paddings, in em means they are related to the font size, and if the user has a big font (e.g., on a big screen) or a small font (e.g., on a handheld device), the sizes will be in proportion. Declarations such as 'text-indent: 1.5em' and 'margin: 1em' are extremely common in CSS.

em is basically CSS property for font sizes.

How to determine the screen width in terms of dp or dip at runtime in Android?

DisplayMetrics displayMetrics = new DisplayMetrics();

getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay().getMetrics(displayMetrics);

int width_px = Resources.getSystem().getDisplayMetrics().widthPixels;

int height_px =Resources.getSystem().getDisplayMetrics().heightPixels;

int pixeldpi = Resources.getSystem().getDisplayMetrics().densityDpi;

int width_dp = (width_px/pixeldpi)*160;
int height_dp = (height_px/pixeldpi)*160;

String concatenation: concat() vs "+" operator

I ran a similar test as @marcio but with the following loop instead:

String c = a;
for (long i = 0; i < 100000L; i++) {
    c = c.concat(b); // make sure javac cannot skip the loop
    // using c += b for the alternative
}

Just for good measure, I threw in StringBuilder.append() as well. Each test was run 10 times, with 100k reps for each run. Here are the results:

  • StringBuilder wins hands down. The clock time result was 0 for most the runs, and the longest took 16ms.
  • a += b takes about 40000ms (40s) for each run.
  • concat only requires 10000ms (10s) per run.

I haven't decompiled the class to see the internals or run it through profiler yet, but I suspect a += b spends much of the time creating new objects of StringBuilder and then converting them back to String.

Starting Docker as Daemon on Ubuntu

There are multiple popular repositories offering docker packages for Ubuntu. The package docker.io is (most likely) from the Ubuntu repository. Another popular one is http://get.docker.io/ubuntu which offers a package lxc-docker (I am running the latter because it ships updates faster). Make sure only one package is installed. Not quite sure if removal of the packages cleans up properly. If sudo service docker restart still does not work, you may have to clean up manually in /etc/.

How to sort List of objects by some property

Guava's ComparisonChain:

Collections.sort(list, new Comparator<ActiveAlarm>(){
            @Override
            public int compare(ActiveAlarm a1, ActiveAlarm a2) {
                 return ComparisonChain.start()
                       .compare(a1.timestarted, a2.timestarted)
                       //...
                       .compare(a1.timeEnded, a1.timeEnded).result();
            }});

Upload file to FTP using C#

public static void UploadFileToFtp(string url, string filePath, string username, string password)
{
    var fileName = Path.GetFileName(filePath);
    var request = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url + fileName);

    request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
    request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(username, password);
    request.UsePassive = true;
    request.UseBinary = true;
    request.KeepAlive = false;

    using (var fileStream = File.OpenRead(filePath))
    {
        using (var requestStream = request.GetRequestStream())
        {
            fileStream.CopyTo(requestStream);
            requestStream.Close();
        }
    }

    var response = (FtpWebResponse)request.GetResponse();
    Console.WriteLine("Upload done: {0}", response.StatusDescription);
    response.Close();
}

clientHeight/clientWidth returning different values on different browsers

i had a similar problem - firefox returned the correct value of obj.clientHeight but ie did not- it returned 0. I changed it to obj.offsetHeight and it worked. Seems there is some state that ie has for clientheight - that makes it iffy...

How can I convert a std::string to int?

std::istringstream ss(thestring);
ss >> thevalue;

To be fully correct you'll want to check the error flags.

How to read a file into a variable in shell?

As Ciro Santilli notes using command substitutions will drop trailing newlines. Their workaround adding trailing characters is great, but after using it for quite some time I decided I needed a solution that didn't use command substitution at all.

My approach now uses read along with the printf builtin's -v flag in order to read the contents of stdin directly into a variable.

# Reads stdin into a variable, accounting for trailing newlines. Avoids
# needing a subshell or command substitution.
# Note that NUL bytes are still unsupported, as Bash variables don't allow NULs.
# See https://stackoverflow.com/a/22607352/113632
read_input() {
  # Use unusual variable names to avoid colliding with a variable name
  # the user might pass in (notably "contents")
  : "${1:?Must provide a variable to read into}"
  if [[ "$1" == '_line' || "$1" == '_contents' ]]; then
    echo "Cannot store contents to $1, use a different name." >&2
    return 1
  fi

  local _line _contents=()
   while IFS='' read -r _line; do
     _contents+=("$_line"$'\n')
   done
   # include $_line once more to capture any content after the last newline
   printf -v "$1" '%s' "${_contents[@]}" "$_line"
}

This supports inputs with or without trailing newlines.

Example usage:

$ read_input file_contents < /tmp/file
# $file_contents now contains the contents of /tmp/file

Using global variables between files?

Your 2nd attempt will work perfectly, and is actually a really good way to handle variable names that you want to have available globally. But you have a name error in the last line. Here is how it should be:

# ../myproject/main.py

# Import globfile
import globfile

# Save myList into globfile
globfile.myList = []

# Import subfile
import subfile

# Do something
subfile.stuff()
print(globfile.myList[0])

See the last line? myList is an attr of globfile, not subfile. This will work as you want.

Nexus 7 (2013) and Win 7 64 - cannot install USB driver despite checking many forums and online resources

SkipSoft.net has some great toolkits. I ran into a similar problem with my Galaxy Nexus.... Ran the corresponding toolkit, which configured my system and downloaded the correct drivers. I then went into Windows Hardware manager after connecting the phone... Windows reported the exclamation that it couldn't find the device driver, so I ran update, and gave it the drivers directory the toolkit had created... and everything started working great. Hope this helps :)

EditText onClickListener in Android

This Works For me:

mEditInit = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.date_init);
mEditInit.setKeyListener(null);
mEditInit.setOnFocusChangeListener(new View.OnFocusChangeListener() {
        @Override
        public void onFocusChange(View v, boolean hasFocus) {
            if(hasFocus)
            {
                mEditInit.callOnClick();
            }
        }
    });
mEditInit.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
    @Override
    public void onClick(View v) {
        showDialog(DATEINIT_DIALOG);
    }

});

MySQL Workbench Dark Theme

For Ubuntu Users, the code_editor.xml is in

/usr/share/mysql-workbench/data

edit as you need, In Ubuntu which is a must need, some default used colours lacks contrast and it is unable to read, For a quick workaround you can also use this solution.

Visit this repo to get the full XML file.

In HTML5, should the main navigation be inside or outside the <header> element?

It's completely up to you. You can either put them in the header or not, as long as the elements within them are internal navigation elements only (i.e. don't link to external sites such as a twitter or facebook account) then it's fine.

They tend to get placed in a header simply because that's where navigation often goes, but it's not set in stone.

You can read more about it at HTML5 Doctor.

Setting the classpath in java using Eclipse IDE

Just had the same issue, for those having the same one it may be that you put the library on the modulepath rather than the classpath while adding it to your project
