Programs & Examples On #Pythonpath

PYTHONPATH is an environment variable that augments the default search path for module files in Python.

django import error - No module named core.management

==================================SOLUTION=========================================

First goto: virtualenv

by running the command: source bin/activate

and install django because you are getting the error related to 'import django':

pip install django

Then run:

python manage.py runserver

(Note: please change 'runserver' to the program name you want to run)

For the same issue, it worked in my case. ==================================Synopsis=========================================

set pythonpath before import statements

This will add a path to your Python process / instance (i.e. the running executable). The path will not be modified for any other Python processes. Another running Python program will not have its path modified, and if you exit your program and run again the path will not include what you added before. What are you are doing is generally correct.

set.py:

import sys
sys.path.append("/tmp/TEST")

loop.py

import sys
import time
while True:
  print sys.path
  time.sleep(1)

run: python loop.py &

This will run loop.py, connected to your STDOUT, and it will continue to run in the background. You can then run python set.py. Each has a different set of environment variables. Observe that the output from loop.py does not change because set.py does not change loop.py's environment.

A note on importing

Python imports are dynamic, like the rest of the language. There is no static linking going on. The import is an executable line, just like sys.path.append....

How to configure custom PYTHONPATH with VM and PyCharm?

In Intellij v2017.2 you can go to:

run > edit configurations > click ... next to the field 'Environment variables' > click the green + sign

Name= PYTHONPATH

value= your_python_path

Python - add PYTHONPATH during command line module run

If you are running the command from a POSIX-compliant shell, like bash, you can set the environment variable like this:

PYTHONPATH="/path/to" python somescript.py somecommand

If it's all on one line, the PYTHONPATH environment value applies only to that one command.

$ echo $PYTHONPATH

$ python -c 'import sys;print("/tmp/pydir" in sys.path)'
False
$ PYTHONPATH=/tmp/pydir python -c 'import sys;print("/tmp/pydir" in sys.path)'
True
$ echo $PYTHONPATH

PyLint "Unable to import" error - how to set PYTHONPATH?

Do you have an empty __init__.py file in both directories to let python know that the dirs are modules?

The basic outline when you are not running from within the folder (ie maybe from pylint's, though I haven't used that) is:

topdir\
  __init__.py
  functions_etc.py
  subdir\
    __init__.py
    other_functions.py

This is how the python interpreter is aware of the module without reference to the current directory, so if pylint is running from its own absolute path it will be able to access functions_etc.py as topdir.functions_etc or topdir.subdir.other_functions, provided topdir is on the PYTHONPATH.

UPDATE: If the problem is not the __init__.py file, maybe just try copying or moving your module to c:\Python26\Lib\site-packages -- that is a common place to put additional packages, and will definitely be on your pythonpath. If you know how to do Windows symbolic links or the equivalent (I don't!), you could do that instead. There are many more options here: http://docs.python.org/install/index.html, including the option of appending sys.path with the user-level directory of your development code, but in practice I usually just symbolically link my local development dir to site-packages - copying it over has the same effect.

How to add to the PYTHONPATH in Windows, so it finds my modules/packages?

You can also add a .pth file containing the desired directory in either your c:\PythonX.X folder, or your \site-packages folder, which tends to be my preferred method when I'm developing a Python package.

See here for more information.

How do you properly determine the current script directory?

First.. a couple missing use-cases here if we're talking about ways to inject anonymous code..

code.compile_command()
code.interact()
imp.load_compiled()
imp.load_dynamic()
imp.load_module()
__builtin__.compile()
loading C compiled shared objects? example: _socket?)

But, the real question is, what is your goal - are you trying to enforce some sort of security? Or are you just interested in whats being loaded.

If you're interested in security, the filename that is being imported via exec/execfile is inconsequential - you should use rexec, which offers the following:

This module contains the RExec class, which supports r_eval(), r_execfile(), r_exec(), and r_import() methods, which are restricted versions of the standard Python functions eval(), execfile() and the exec and import statements. Code executed in this restricted environment will only have access to modules and functions that are deemed safe; you can subclass RExec add or remove capabilities as desired.

However, if this is more of an academic pursuit.. here are a couple goofy approaches that you might be able to dig a little deeper into..

Example scripts:

./deep.py

print ' >> level 1'
execfile('deeper.py')
print ' << level 1'

./deeper.py

print '\t >> level 2'
exec("import sys; sys.path.append('/tmp'); import deepest")
print '\t << level 2'

/tmp/deepest.py

print '\t\t >> level 3'
print '\t\t\t I can see the earths core.'
print '\t\t << level 3'

./codespy.py

import sys, os

def overseer(frame, event, arg):
    print "loaded(%s)" % os.path.abspath(frame.f_code.co_filename)

sys.settrace(overseer)
execfile("deep.py")
sys.exit(0)

Output

loaded(/Users/synthesizerpatel/deep.py)
>> level 1
loaded(/Users/synthesizerpatel/deeper.py)
    >> level 2
loaded(/Users/synthesizerpatel/<string>)
loaded(/tmp/deepest.py)
        >> level 3
            I can see the earths core.
        << level 3
    << level 2
<< level 1

Of course, this is a resource-intensive way to do it, you'd be tracing all your code.. Not very efficient. But, I think it's a novel approach since it continues to work even as you get deeper into the nest. You can't override 'eval'. Although you can override execfile().

Note, this approach only coveres exec/execfile, not 'import'. For higher level 'module' load hooking you might be able to use use sys.path_hooks (Write-up courtesy of PyMOTW).

Thats all I have off the top of my head.

How to get the PYTHONPATH in shell?

Python, at startup, loads a bunch of values into sys.path (which is "implemented" via a list of strings), including:

  • various hardcoded places
  • the value of $PYTHONPATH
  • probably some stuff from startup files (I'm not sure if Python has rcfiles)

$PYTHONPATH is only one part of the eventual value of sys.path.

If you're after the value of sys.path, the best way would be to ask Python (thanks @Codemonkey):

python -c "import sys; print sys.path"

How do I find out my python path using python?

You would probably also want this:

import sys
print(sys.path)

Or as a one liner from the terminal:

python -c "import sys; print('\n'.join(sys.path))"

Caveat: If you have multiple versions of Python installed you should use a corresponding command python2 or python3.

Effect of using sys.path.insert(0, path) and sys.path(append) when loading modules

Because python checks in the directories in sequential order starting at the first directory in sys.path list, till it find the .py file it was looking for.

Ideally, the current directory or the directory of the script is the first always the first element in the list, unless you modify it, like you did. From documentation -

As initialized upon program startup, the first item of this list, path[0], is the directory containing the script that was used to invoke the Python interpreter. If the script directory is not available (e.g. if the interpreter is invoked interactively or if the script is read from standard input), path[0] is the empty string, which directs Python to search modules in the current directory first. Notice that the script directory is inserted before the entries inserted as a result of PYTHONPATH.

So, most probably, you had a .py file with the same name as the module you were trying to import from, in the current directory (where the script was being run from).

Also, a thing to note about ImportErrors , lets say the import error says - ImportError: No module named main - it doesn't mean the main.py is overwritten, no if that was overwritten we would not be having issues trying to read it. Its some module above this that got overwritten with a .py or some other file.

Example -

My directory structure looks like -

 - test
    - shared
         - __init__.py
         - phtest.py
  - testmain.py

Now From testmain.py , I call from shared import phtest , it works fine.

Now lets say I introduce a shared.py in test directory` , example -

 - test
    - shared
         - __init__.py
         - phtest.py
  - testmain.py
  - shared.py

Now when I try to do from shared import phtest from testmain.py , I will get the error -

ImportError: cannot import name 'phtest'

As you can see above, the file that is causing the issue is shared.py , not phtest.py .

PYTHONPATH vs. sys.path

I hate PYTHONPATH. I find it brittle and annoying to set on a per-user basis (especially for daemon users) and keep track of as project folders move around. I would much rather set sys.path in the invoke scripts for standalone projects.

However sys.path.append isn't the way to do it. You can easily get duplicates, and it doesn't sort out .pth files. Better (and more readable): site.addsitedir.

And script.py wouldn't normally be the more appropriate place to do it, as it's inside the package you want to make available on the path. Library modules should certainly not be touching sys.path themselves. Instead, you'd normally have a hashbanged-script outside the package that you use to instantiate and run the app, and it's in this trivial wrapper script you'd put deployment details like sys.path-frobbing.

Add to python path mac os x

Mathew's answer works for the terminal python shell, but it didn't work for IDLE shell in my case because many versions of python existed before I replaced them all with Python2.7.7. How I solved the problem with IDLE.

  1. In terminal, cd /Applications/Python\ 2.7/IDLE.app/Contents/Resources/
  2. then sudo nano idlemain.py, enter password if required.
  3. after os.chdir(os.path.expanduser('~/Documents')) this line, I added sys.path.append("/Users/admin/Downloads....") NOTE: replace contents of the quotes with the directory where python module to be added
  4. to save the change, ctrl+x and enter Now open idle and try to import the python module, no error for me!!!

Why use sys.path.append(path) instead of sys.path.insert(1, path)?

If you have multiple versions of a package / module, you need to be using virtualenv (emphasis mine):

virtualenv is a tool to create isolated Python environments.

The basic problem being addressed is one of dependencies and versions, and indirectly permissions. Imagine you have an application that needs version 1 of LibFoo, but another application requires version 2. How can you use both these applications? If you install everything into /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages (or whatever your platform’s standard location is), it’s easy to end up in a situation where you unintentionally upgrade an application that shouldn’t be upgraded.

Or more generally, what if you want to install an application and leave it be? If an application works, any change in its libraries or the versions of those libraries can break the application.

Also, what if you can’t install packages into the global site-packages directory? For instance, on a shared host.

In all these cases, virtualenv can help you. It creates an environment that has its own installation directories, that doesn’t share libraries with other virtualenv environments (and optionally doesn’t access the globally installed libraries either).

That's why people consider insert(0, to be wrong -- it's an incomplete, stopgap solution to the problem of managing multiple environments.

Permanently add a directory to PYTHONPATH?

Inspired by andrei-deusteanu answer, here is my version. This allows you to create a number of additional paths in your site-packages directory.

import os

# Add paths here. Then Run this block of code once and restart kernel. Paths should now be set.
paths_of_directories_to_add = [r'C:\GIT\project1', r'C:\GIT\project2', r'C:\GIT\project3']

# Find your site-packages directory
pathSitePckgs = os.path.join(os.path.dirname(os.__file__), 'site-packages')

# Write a .pth file in your site-packages directory
pthFile = os.path.join(pathSitePckgs,'current_machine_paths.pth')
with open(pthFile,'w') as pth_file:
    pth_file.write('\n'.join(paths_of_directories_to_add))

print(pthFile)

PYTHONPATH on Linux

  1. PYTHONPATH is an environment variable
  2. Yes (see https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/24802/on-which-unix-distributions-is-python-installed-as-part-of-the-default-install)
  3. /usr/lib/python2.7 on Ubuntu
  4. you shouldn't install packages manually. Instead, use pip. When a package isn't in pip, it usually has a setuptools setup script which will install the package into the proper location (see point 3).
  5. if you use pip or setuptools, then you don't need to set PYTHONPATH explicitly

If you look at the instructions for pyopengl, you'll see that they are consistent with points 4 and 5.

adding directory to sys.path /PYTHONPATH

You could use:

import os
path = 'the path you want'
os.environ['PATH'] += ':'+path

JavaScript DOM: Find Element Index In Container

If you want to write this compactly all you need is:

var i = 0;
for (;yourElement.parentNode[i]!==yourElement;i++){}
indexOfYourElement = i;

We just cycle through the elements in the parent node, stopping when we find your element.

You can also easily do:

for (;yourElement.parentNode.getElementsByTagName("li")[i]!==yourElement;i++){}

if that's all you want to look through.

How do I set the path to a DLL file in Visual Studio?

The search path that the loader uses when you call LoadLibrary() can be altered by using the SetDllDirectory() function. So you could just call this and add the path to your dependency before you load it.

See also DLL Search Order.

It has to do with how the function is called- basically the order in which things are put on the the stack and who is responsible for cleanup.

Is there a code obfuscator for PHP?

Try this one: http://www.pipsomania.com/best_php_obfuscator.do

Recently I wrote it in Java to obfuscate my PHP projects, because I didnt find any good and compatible ready written on the net, I decided to put it online as saas, so everyone use it free. It does not change variable names between different scripts for maximum compatibility, but is obfuscating them very good, with random logic, every instruction too. Strings... everything. I believe its much better then this buggy codeeclipse, that is by the way written in PHP and very slow :)

How can I delete a newline if it is the last character in a file?

A very simple method for single-line files, requiring GNU echo from coreutils:

/bin/echo -n $(cat $file)

Does Java support default parameter values?

NO, But we have alternative in the form of function overloading.

called when no parameter passed

void operation(){

int a = 0;
int b = 0;

}

called when "a" parameter was passed

void operation(int a){

int b = 0;
//code

}

called when parameter b passed

void operation(int a , int b){
//code
}

vertical alignment of text element in SVG

After looking at the SVG Recommendation I've come to the understanding that the baseline properties are meant to position text relative to other text, especially when mixing different fonts and or languages. If you want to postion text so that it's top is at y then you need use dy = "y + the height of your text".

Most efficient way to append arrays in C#?

I believe if you have 2 arrays of the same type that you want to combine into a third array, there's a very simple way to do that.

here's the code:

String[] theHTMLFiles = Directory.GetFiles(basePath, "*.html");
String[] thexmlFiles = Directory.GetFiles(basePath, "*.xml");
List<String> finalList = new List<String>(theHTMLFiles.Concat<string>(thexmlFiles));
String[] finalArray = finalList.ToArray();

Is there a way to disable initial sorting for jquery DataTables?

Well I found the answer set "aaSorting" to an empty array:

$(document).ready( function() {
    $('#example').dataTable({
        /* Disable initial sort */
        "aaSorting": []
    });
})

For newer versions of Datatables (>= 1.10) use order option:

$(document).ready( function() {
    $('#example').dataTable({
        /* No ordering applied by DataTables during initialisation */
        "order": []
    });
})

I replaced WHERE with HAVING as said by @powerlord. But still showing an error.

403 Forbidden vs 401 Unauthorized HTTP responses

I think it is important to consider that, to a browser, 401 initiates an authentication dialog for the user to enter new credentials, while 403 does not. Browsers think that, if a 401 is returned, then the user should re-authenticate. So 401 stands for invalid authentication while 403 stands for a lack of permission.

Here are some cases under that logic where an error would be returned from authentication or authorization, with important phrases bolded.

  • A resource requires authentication but no credentials were specified.

401: The client should specify credentials.

  • The specified credentials are in an invalid format.

400: That's neither 401 nor 403, as syntax errors should always return 400.

  • The specified credentials reference a user which does not exist.

401: The client should specify valid credentials.

  • The specified credentials are invalid but specify a valid user (or don't specify a user if a specified user is not required).

401: Again, the client should specify valid credentials.

  • The specified credentials have expired.

401: This is practically the same as having invalid credentials in general, so the client should specify valid credentials.

  • The specified credentials are completely valid but do not suffice the particular resource, though it is possible that credentials with more permission could.

403: Specifying valid credentials would not grant access to the resource, as the current credentials are already valid but only do not have permission.

  • The particular resource is inaccessible regardless of credentials.

403: This is regardless of credentials, so specifying valid credentials cannot help.

  • The specified credentials are completely valid but the particular client is blocked from using them.

403: If the client is blocked, specifying new credentials will not do anything.

Convert List(of object) to List(of string)

Not possible without iterating to build a new list. You can wrap the list in a container that implements IList.

You can use LINQ to get a lazy evaluated version of IEnumerable<string> from an object list like this:

var stringList = myList.OfType<string>();

How can I multiply all items in a list together with Python?

The simple way is:

import numpy as np
np.exp(np.log(your_array).sum())

Bootstrap: Use .pull-right without having to hardcode a negative margin-top

Keep the h2 at the top, then pull-left on the p and pull-right on the login-box

<div class='container'>
  <div class='hero-unit'>

    <h2>Welcome</h2>

    <div class="pull-left">
      <p>Please log in</p>
    </div>

    <div id='login-box' class='pull-right control-group'>
        <div class='clearfix'>
            <input type='text' placeholder='Username' />
        </div>
        <div class='clearfix'>
            <input type='password' placeholder='Password' />
        </div>
        <button type='button' class='btn btn-primary'>Log in</button>
    </div>

    <div class="clearfix"></div>

  </div>
</div>

the default vertical-align on floated boxes is baseline, so the "Please log in" exactly lines up with the "Username" (check by changing the pull-right to pull-left).

How to replace spaces in file names using a bash script

Here's a (quite verbose) find -exec solution which writes "file already exists" warnings to stderr:

function trspace() {

   dir="${1}"
   replace_char="${2:-_}"
   find "${dir}" -xdev -depth -name $'*[ \t\r\n\v\f]*' -exec bash -c '
      for ((i=1; i<=$#; i++)); do
         name="${@:i:1}"
         dname="${name%/*}"
         bname="${name##*/}"
         newname="${dname}/${bname//[[:space:]]/${0}}"
         if [[ -e "${newname}" ]]; then
            echo "Warning: file already exists: ${newname}" 1>&2
         else
            mv "${name}" "${newname}"
         fi
      done
  ' "${replace_char}" '{}' +
}

How can I enable or disable the GPS programmatically on Android?

the GPS can be toggled by exploiting a bug in the power manager widget. see this xda thread for discussion.

here's some example code i use

private void turnGPSOn(){
    String provider = Settings.Secure.getString(getContentResolver(), Settings.Secure.LOCATION_PROVIDERS_ALLOWED);

    if(!provider.contains("gps")){ //if gps is disabled
        final Intent poke = new Intent();
        poke.setClassName("com.android.settings", "com.android.settings.widget.SettingsAppWidgetProvider");
        poke.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_ALTERNATIVE);
        poke.setData(Uri.parse("3"));
        sendBroadcast(poke);
    }
}

private void turnGPSOff(){
    String provider = Settings.Secure.getString(getContentResolver(), Settings.Secure.LOCATION_PROVIDERS_ALLOWED);

    if(provider.contains("gps")){ //if gps is enabled
        final Intent poke = new Intent();
        poke.setClassName("com.android.settings", "com.android.settings.widget.SettingsAppWidgetProvider");
        poke.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_ALTERNATIVE);
        poke.setData(Uri.parse("3"));
        sendBroadcast(poke);
    }
}

use the following to test if the existing version of the power control widget is one which will allow you to toggle the gps.

private boolean canToggleGPS() {
    PackageManager pacman = getPackageManager();
    PackageInfo pacInfo = null;

    try {
        pacInfo = pacman.getPackageInfo("com.android.settings", PackageManager.GET_RECEIVERS);
    } catch (NameNotFoundException e) {
        return false; //package not found
    }

    if(pacInfo != null){
        for(ActivityInfo actInfo : pacInfo.receivers){
            //test if recevier is exported. if so, we can toggle GPS.
            if(actInfo.name.equals("com.android.settings.widget.SettingsAppWidgetProvider") && actInfo.exported){
                return true;
            }
        }
    }

How to shutdown a Spring Boot Application in a correct way?

Spring Boot now supports graceful shut down (currently in pre-release versions, 2.3.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT)

When enabled, shutdown of the application will include a grace period of configurable duration. During this grace period, existing requests will be allowed to complete but no new requests will be permitted

You can enable it with:

server.shutdown.grace-period=30s

Match multiline text using regular expression

First, you're using the modifiers under an incorrect assumption.

Pattern.MULTILINE or (?m) tells Java to accept the anchors ^ and $ to match at the start and end of each line (otherwise they only match at the start/end of the entire string).

Pattern.DOTALL or (?s) tells Java to allow the dot to match newline characters, too.

Second, in your case, the regex fails because you're using the matches() method which expects the regex to match the entire string - which of course doesn't work since there are some characters left after (\\W)*(\\S)* have matched.

So if you're simply looking for a string that starts with User Comments:, use the regex

^\s*User Comments:\s*(.*)

with the Pattern.DOTALL option:

Pattern regex = Pattern.compile("^\\s*User Comments:\\s+(.*)", Pattern.DOTALL);
Matcher regexMatcher = regex.matcher(subjectString);
if (regexMatcher.find()) {
    ResultString = regexMatcher.group(1);
}

ResultString will then contain the text after User Comments:

How can I save a base64-encoded image to disk?

How to .gitignore all files/folder in a folder, but not the folder itself?

You can't commit empty folders in git. If you want it to show up, you need to put something in it, even just an empty file.

For example, add an empty file called .gitkeep to the folder you want to keep, then in your .gitignore file write:

# exclude everything
somefolder/*

# exception to the rule
!somefolder/.gitkeep

Commit your .gitignore and .gitkeep files and this should resolve your issue.

Changing SVG image color with javascript

Your SVG must be inline in your document in order to be styled with CSS. This can be done by writing the SVG markup directly into your HTML code, or by using SVG injection, which replaces the img element with the content from and SVG file with Javascript.

There is an open source library called SVGInject that does this for you. All you have to do is to add the attribute onload="SVGInject(this)" to you <img> tag.

A simple example using SVGInject looks like this:

<html>
  <head>
    <script src="svg-inject.min.js"></script>
  </head>
  <body>
    <img src="image.svg" onload="SVGInject(this)" />
  </body>
</html>

After the image is loaded the onload="SVGInject(this) will trigger the injection and the <img> element will be replaced by the contents of the SVG file provided in the src attribute.

Angular cookies

Update: angular2-cookie is now deprecated. Please use my ngx-cookie instead.

Old answer:

Here is angular2-cookie which is the exact implementation of Angular 1 $cookies service (plus a removeAll() method) that I created. It is using the same methods, only implemented in typescript with Angular 2 logic.

You can inject it as a service in the components providers array:

import {CookieService} from 'angular2-cookie/core';

@Component({
    selector: 'my-very-cool-app',
    template: '<h1>My Angular2 App with Cookies</h1>',
    providers: [CookieService]
})

After that, define it in the consturctur as usual and start using:

export class AppComponent {
  constructor(private _cookieService:CookieService){}

  getCookie(key: string){
    return this._cookieService.get(key);
  }
}

You can get it via npm:

npm install angular2-cookie --save

String replacement in Objective-C

You could use the method

- (NSString *)stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:(NSString *)target

...to get a new string with a substring replaced (See NSString documentation for others)

Example use

NSString *str = @"This is a string";

str = [str stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"string"
                                     withString:@"duck"];

How to write a Unit Test?

This is a very generic question and there is a lot of ways it can be answered.

If you want to use JUnit to create the tests, you need to create your testcase class, then create individual test methods that test specific functionality of your class/module under tests (single testcase classes are usually associated with a single "production" class that is being tested) and inside these methods execute various operations and compare the results with what would be correct. It is especially important to try and cover as many corner cases as possible.

In your specific example, you could for example test the following:

  1. A simple addition between two positive numbers. Add them, then verify the result is what you would expect.
  2. An addition between a positive and a negative number (which returns a result with the sign of the first argument).
  3. An addition between a positive and a negative number (which returns a result with the sign of the second argument).
  4. An addition between two negative numbers.
  5. An addition that results in an overflow.

To verify the results, you can use various assertXXX methods from the org.junit.Assert class (for convenience, you can do 'import static org.junit.Assert.*'). These methods test a particular condition and fail the test if it does not validate (with a specific message, optionally).

Example testcase class in your case (without the methods contents defined):

import static org.junit.Assert.*;

public class AdditionTests {
    @Test
    public void testSimpleAddition() { ... }

    @Test
    public void testPositiveNegativeAddition() { ... }

    @Test
    public void testNegativePositiveAddition() { ... }

    @Test
    public void testNegativeAddition() { ... }

    @Test
    public void testOverflow() { ... }
}

If you are not used to writing unit tests but instead test your code by writing ad-hoc tests that you then validate "visually" (for example, you write a simple main method that accepts arguments entered using the keyboard and then prints out the results - and then you keep entering values and validating yourself if the results are correct), then you can start by writing such tests in the format above and validating the results with the correct assertXXX method instead of doing it manually. This way, you can re-run the test much easier then if you had to do manual tests.

Storing Images in DB - Yea or Nay?

No, due to page splits. You're essentially defining rows that can be 1KB - n MB so your database will have a lot of empty spaces in its pages which is bad for performance.

What does template <unsigned int N> mean?

Yes, it is a non-type parameter. You can have several kinds of template parameters

  • Type Parameters.
    • Types
    • Templates (only classes and alias templates, no functions or variable templates)
  • Non-type Parameters
    • Pointers
    • References
    • Integral constant expressions

What you have there is of the last kind. It's a compile time constant (so-called constant expression) and is of type integer or enumeration. After looking it up in the standard, i had to move class templates up into the types section - even though templates are not types. But they are called type-parameters for the purpose of describing those kinds nonetheless. You can have pointers (and also member pointers) and references to objects/functions that have external linkage (those that can be linked to from other object files and whose address is unique in the entire program). Examples:

Template type parameter:

template<typename T>
struct Container {
    T t;
};

// pass type "long" as argument.
Container<long> test;

Template integer parameter:

template<unsigned int S>
struct Vector {
    unsigned char bytes[S];
};

// pass 3 as argument.
Vector<3> test;

Template pointer parameter (passing a pointer to a function)

template<void (*F)()>
struct FunctionWrapper {
    static void call_it() { F(); }
};

// pass address of function do_it as argument.
void do_it() { }
FunctionWrapper<&do_it> test;

Template reference parameter (passing an integer)

template<int &A>
struct SillyExample {
    static void do_it() { A = 10; }
};

// pass flag as argument
int flag;
SillyExample<flag> test;

Template template parameter.

template<template<typename T> class AllocatePolicy>
struct Pool {
    void allocate(size_t n) {
        int *p = AllocatePolicy<int>::allocate(n);
    }
};

// pass the template "allocator" as argument.
template<typename T>
struct allocator { static T * allocate(size_t n) { return 0; } };
Pool<allocator> test;

A template without any parameters is not possible. But a template without any explicit argument is possible - it has default arguments:

template<unsigned int SIZE = 3>
struct Vector {
    unsigned char buffer[SIZE];
};

Vector<> test;

Syntactically, template<> is reserved to mark an explicit template specialization, instead of a template without parameters:

template<>
struct Vector<3> {
    // alternative definition for SIZE == 3
};

Dynamically Dimensioning A VBA Array?

You have to use the ReDim statement to dynamically size arrays.

Public Sub Test()
    Dim NumberOfZombies As Integer
    NumberOfZombies = 20000
    Dim Zombies() As New Zombie
    ReDim Zombies(NumberOfZombies)

End Sub

This can seem strange when you already know the size of your array, but there you go!

In C++, what is a virtual base class?

Virtual base classes, used in virtual inheritance, is a way of preventing multiple "instances" of a given class appearing in an inheritance hierarchy when using multiple inheritance.

Consider the following scenario:

class A { public: void Foo() {} };
class B : public A {};
class C : public A {};
class D : public B, public C {};

The above class hierarchy results in the "dreaded diamond" which looks like this:

  A
 / \
B   C
 \ /
  D

An instance of D will be made up of B, which includes A, and C which also includes A. So you have two "instances" (for want of a better expression) of A.

When you have this scenario, you have the possibility of ambiguity. What happens when you do this:

D d;
d.Foo(); // is this B's Foo() or C's Foo() ??

Virtual inheritance is there to solve this problem. When you specify virtual when inheriting your classes, you're telling the compiler that you only want a single instance.

class A { public: void Foo() {} };
class B : public virtual A {};
class C : public virtual A {};
class D : public B, public C {};

This means that there is only one "instance" of A included in the hierarchy. Hence

D d;
d.Foo(); // no longer ambiguous

This is a mini summary. For more information, have a read of this and this. A good example is also available here.

Excel is not updating cells, options > formula > workbook calculation set to automatic

I had this happen in a worksheet today. Neither F9 nor turning on Iterative Calculation made the cells in question update, but double-clicking the cell and pressing Enter did. I searched the Excel Help and found this in the help article titled Change formula recalculation, iteration, or precision:

CtrlAltF9:
Recalculate all formulas in all open workbooks, regardless of whether they have changed since the last recalculation.

CtrlShiftAltF9:
Check dependent formulas, and then recalculate all formulas in all open workbooks, regardless of whether they have changed since the last recalculation.

So I tried CtrlShiftAltF9, and sure enough, all of my non-recalculating formulas finally recalculated!

How to push both value and key into PHP array

I was just looking for the same thing and I realized that, once again, my thinking is different because I am old school. I go all the way back to BASIC and PERL and sometimes I forget how easy things really are in PHP.

I just made this function to take all settings from the database where their are 3 columns. setkey, item (key) & value (value) and place them into an array called settings using the same key/value without using push just like above.

Pretty easy & simple really

// Get All Settings
$settings=getGlobalSettings();

// Apply User Theme Choice
$theme_choice = $settings['theme'];

.. etc etc etc ....

function getGlobalSettings(){

    $dbc = mysqli_connect(wds_db_host, wds_db_user, wds_db_pass) or die("MySQL Error: " . mysqli_error());
    mysqli_select_db($dbc, wds_db_name) or die("MySQL Error: " . mysqli_error());
    $MySQL = "SELECT * FROM systemSettings";
    $result = mysqli_query($dbc, $MySQL);
    while($row = mysqli_fetch_array($result))
        {
        $settings[$row['item']] = $row['value'];   // NO NEED FOR PUSH
        }
    mysqli_close($dbc);
return $settings;
}

So like the other posts explain... In php there is no need to "PUSH" an array when you are using

Key => Value

AND... There is no need to define the array first either.

$array=array();

Don't need to define or push. Just assign $array[$key] = $value; It is automatically a push and a declaration at the same time.

I must add that for security reasons, (P)oor (H)elpless (P)rotection, I means Programming for Dummies, I mean PHP.... hehehe I suggest that you only use this concept for what I intended. Any other method could be a security risk. There, made my disclaimer!

How to determine total number of open/active connections in ms sql server 2005

As @jwalkerjr mentioned, you should be disposing of connections in code (if connection pooling is enabled, they are just returned to the connection pool). The prescribed way to do this is using the 'using' statement:

// Execute stored proc to read data from repository
using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(this.connectionString))
{
    using (SqlCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand())
    {
        cmd.CommandText = "LoadFromRepository";
        cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
        cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@ID", fileID);

        conn.Open();
        using (SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection))
        {
            if (rdr.Read())
            {
                filename = SaveToFileSystem(rdr, folderfilepath);
            }
        }
    }
}

Convert char array to a int number in C

It's not what the question asks but I used @Rich Drummond 's answer for a char array read in from stdin which is null terminated.

char *buff;
size_t buff_size = 100;
int choice;
do{
    buff = (char *)malloc(buff_size *sizeof(char));
    getline(&buff, &buff_size, stdin);
    choice = atoi(buff);
    free(buff);

}while((choice<1)&&(choice>9));

TypeError: string indices must be integers, not str // working with dict

Actually I think that more general approach to loop through dictionary is to use iteritems():

# get tuples of term, courses
for term, term_courses in courses.iteritems():
    # get tuples of course number, info
    for course, info in term_courses.iteritems():
        # loop through info
        for k, v in info.iteritems():
            print k, v

output:

assistant Peter C.
prereq cs101
...
name Programming a Robotic Car
teacher Sebastian

Or, as Matthias mentioned in comments, if you don't need keys, you can just use itervalues():

for term_courses in courses.itervalues():
    for info in term_courses.itervalues():
        for k, v in info.iteritems():
            print k, v

How to mute an html5 video player using jQuery

If you don't want to jQuery, here's the vanilla JavaScript:

///Mute
var video = document.getElementById("your-video-id");
video.muted= true;

//Unmute
var video = document.getElementById("your-video-id");
video.muted= false;

It will work for audio too, just put the element's id and it will work (and change the var name if you want, to 'media' or something suited for both audio/video as you like).

initialize a vector to zeros C++/C++11

You don't need initialization lists for that:

Understanding colors on Android (six characters)

An 8-digit hex color value is a representation of ARGB (Alpha, Red, Green, Blue), whereas a 6-digit value just assumes 100% opacity (fully opaque) and defines just the RGB values. So to make this be fully opaque, you can either use #FF555555, or just #555555. Each 2-digit hex value is one byte, representing values from 0-255.

How to add click event to a iframe with JQuery

You can solve it very easily, just wrap that iframe in wrapper, and track clicks on it.

Like this:

<div id="iframe_id_wrapper"> <iframe id="iframe_id" src="http://something.com"></iframe> </div>

And disable pointer events on iframe itself.

#iframe_id { pointer-events: none; }

After this changes your code will work like expected.

$('#iframe_id_wrapper').click(function() { //run function that records clicks });

How to click a link whose href has a certain substring in Selenium?

You can do this:

//first get all the <a> elements
List<WebElement> linkList=driver.findElements(By.tagName("a"));

//now traverse over the list and check
for(int i=0 ; i<linkList.size() ; i++)
{
    if(linkList.get(i).getAttribute("href").contains("long"))
    {
        linkList.get(i).click();
        break;
    }
}

in this what we r doing is first we are finding all the <a> tags and storing them in a list.After that we are iterating the list one by one to find <a> tag whose href attribute contains long string. And then we click on that particular <a> tag and comes out of the loop.

Error in contrasts when defining a linear model in R

The answers by the other authors have already addressed the problem of factors with only one level or NAs.

Today, I stumbled upon the same error when using the rstatix::anova_test() function but my factors were okay (more than one level, no NAs, no character vectors, ...). Instead, I could fix the error by dropping all variables in the dataframe that are not included in the model. I don't know what's the reason for this behavior but just knowing about this might also be helpful when encountering this error.

Using JQuery to open a popup window and print

You should put the print function in your view-details.php file and call it once the file is loaded, by either using

});

Understanding Python super() with __init__() methods

I'm trying to understand super()

The reason we use super is so that child classes that may be using cooperative multiple inheritance will call the correct next parent class function in the Method Resolution Order (MRO).

In Python 3, we can call it like this:

class ChildB(Base):
    def __init__(self):
        super().__init__()

In Python 2, we were required to use it like this, but we'll avoid this here:

        super(ChildB, self).__init__()

Without super, you are limited in your ability to use multiple inheritance because you hard-wire the next parent's call:

        Base.__init__(self) # Avoid this.

I further explain below.

"What difference is there actually in this code?:"

class ChildA(Base):
    def __init__(self):
        Base.__init__(self)

class ChildB(Base):
    def __init__(self):
        super().__init__()

The primary difference in this code is that in ChildB you get a layer of indirection in the __init__ with super, which uses the class in which it is defined to determine the next class's __init__ to look up in the MRO.

I illustrate this difference in an answer at the canonical question, How to use 'super' in Python?, which demonstrates dependency injection and cooperative multiple inheritance.

If Python didn't have super

Here's code that's actually closely equivalent to super (how it's implemented in C, minus some checking and fallback behavior, and translated to Python):

class ChildB(Base):
    def __init__(self):
        mro = type(self).mro()
        check_next = mro.index(ChildB) + 1 # next after *this* class.
        while check_next < len(mro):
            next_class = mro[check_next]
            if '__init__' in next_class.__dict__:
                next_class.__init__(self)
                break
            check_next += 1

Written a little more like native Python:

class ChildB(Base):
    def __init__(self):
        mro = type(self).mro()
        for next_class in mro[mro.index(ChildB) + 1:]: # slice to end
            if hasattr(next_class, '__init__'):
                next_class.__init__(self)
                break

If we didn't have the super object, we'd have to write this manual code everywhere (or recreate it!) to ensure that we call the proper next method in the Method Resolution Order!

How does super do this in Python 3 without being told explicitly which class and instance from the method it was called from?

It gets the calling stack frame, and finds the class (implicitly stored as a local free variable, __class__, making the calling function a closure over the class) and the first argument to that function, which should be the instance or class that informs it which Method Resolution Order (MRO) to use.

Since it requires that first argument for the MRO, using super with static methods is impossible as they do not have access to the MRO of the class from which they are called.

Criticisms of other answers:

super() lets you avoid referring to the base class explicitly, which can be nice. . But the main advantage comes with multiple inheritance, where all sorts of fun stuff can happen. See the standard docs on super if you haven't already.

It's rather hand-wavey and doesn't tell us much, but the point of super is not to avoid writing the parent class. The point is to ensure that the next method in line in the method resolution order (MRO) is called. This becomes important in multiple inheritance.

I'll explain here.

class Base(object):
    def __init__(self):
        print("Base init'ed")

class ChildA(Base):
    def __init__(self):
        print("ChildA init'ed")
        Base.__init__(self)

class ChildB(Base):
    def __init__(self):
        print("ChildB init'ed")
        super().__init__()

And let's create a dependency that we want to be called after the Child:

class UserDependency(Base):
    def __init__(self):
        print("UserDependency init'ed")
        super().__init__()

Now remember, ChildB uses super, ChildA does not:

class UserA(ChildA, UserDependency):
    def __init__(self):
        print("UserA init'ed")
        super().__init__()

class UserB(ChildB, UserDependency):
    def __init__(self):
        print("UserB init'ed")
        super().__init__()

And UserA does not call the UserDependency method:

>>> UserA()
UserA init'ed
ChildA init'ed
Base init'ed
<__main__.UserA object at 0x0000000003403BA8>

But UserB does in-fact call UserDependency because ChildB invokes super:

>>> UserB()
UserB init'ed
ChildB init'ed
UserDependency init'ed
Base init'ed
<__main__.UserB object at 0x0000000003403438>

Criticism for another answer

In no circumstance should you do the following, which another answer suggests, as you'll definitely get errors when you subclass ChildB:

super(self.__class__, self).__init__()  # DON'T DO THIS! EVER.

(That answer is not clever or particularly interesting, but in spite of direct criticism in the comments and over 17 downvotes, the answerer persisted in suggesting it until a kind editor fixed his problem.)

Explanation: Using self.__class__ as a substitute for the class name in super() will lead to recursion. super lets us look up the next parent in the MRO (see the first section of this answer) for child classes. If you tell super we're in the child instance's method, it will then lookup the next method in line (probably this one) resulting in recursion, probably causing a logical failure (in the answerer's example, it does) or a RuntimeError when the recursion depth is exceeded.

>>> class Polygon(object):
...     def __init__(self, id):
...         self.id = id
...
>>> class Rectangle(Polygon):
... def __init__(self, id, width, height):
...         super(self.__class__, self).__init__(id)
...         self.shape = (width, height)
...
>>> class Square(Rectangle):
...     pass
...
>>> Square('a', 10, 10)
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
  File "<stdin>", line 3, in __init__
TypeError: __init__() missing 2 required positional arguments: 'width' and 'height'

Python 3's new super() calling method with no arguments fortunately allows us to sidestep this issue.

Android webview slow

It depends on the web application being loaded. Try some of the approaches below:

Set higher render priority (deprecated from API 18+):

webview.getSettings().setRenderPriority(RenderPriority.HIGH);

Enable/disable hardware acceleration:

if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.KITKAT) {
    // chromium, enable hardware acceleration
    webView.setLayerType(View.LAYER_TYPE_HARDWARE, null);
} else {
    // older android version, disable hardware acceleration
    webView.setLayerType(View.LAYER_TYPE_SOFTWARE, null);
}

Disable the cache (if you have problems with your content):

webview.getSettings().setCacheMode(WebSettings.LOAD_NO_CACHE);

Convert String to SecureString

Here is a cheap linq trick.

            /* and now : seal the deal */
            sec.MakeReadOnly();

Print all key/value pairs in a Java ConcurrentHashMap

I tested your code and works properly. I've added a small demo with another way to print all the data in the map:

ConcurrentHashMap<String, Integer> map = new ConcurrentHashMap<String, Integer>();
map.put("A", 1);
map.put("B", 2);
map.put("C", 3);

for (String key : map.keySet()) {
    System.out.println(key + " " + map.get(key));
}

for (Map.Entry<String, Integer> entry : map.entrySet()) {
    String key = entry.getKey().toString();
    Integer value = entry.getValue();
    System.out.println("key, " + key + " value " + value);

Android Canvas.drawText

Worked this out, turns out that android.R.color.black is not the same as Color.BLACK. Changed the code to:

Paint paint = new Paint();
paint.setColor(Color.WHITE);
paint.setStyle(Style.FILL);
canvas.drawPaint(paint);

paint.setColor(Color.BLACK);
paint.setTextSize(20);
canvas.drawText("Some Text", 10, 25, paint);

and it all works fine now!!

Simple two column html layout without using tables

Well, if you want the super easiest method, just put

<div class="left">left</div>
<div class="right">right</div>

.left {
    float: left;
}

though you may need more than that depending on what other layout requirements you have.

How to create custom exceptions in Java?

For a checked exception:

public class MyCustomException extends Exception { }

Technically, anything that extends Throwable can be an thrown, but exceptions are generally extensions of the Exception class so that they're checked exceptions (except RuntimeException or classes based on it, which are not checked), as opposed to the other common type of throwable, Errors which usually are not something designed to be gracefully handled beyond the JVM internals.

You can also make exceptions non-public, but then you can only use them in the package that defines them, as opposed to across packages.

As far as throwing/catching custom exceptions, it works just like the built-in ones - throw via

throw new MyCustomException()

and catch via

catch (MyCustomException e) { }

Twitter Bootstrap Tabs: Go to Specific Tab on Page Reload or Hyperlink

This works in Bootstrap 3 and improves dubbe and flynfish 's 2 top answers by integrating GarciaWebDev 's answer as well (which allows for url parameters after the hash and is straight from Bootstrap authors on the github issue tracker):

    activeTab && activeTab.tab('show');
}

What is the correct way to read from NetworkStream in .NET

Networking code is notoriously difficult to write, test and debug.

You often have lots of things to consider such as:

  • what "endian" will you use for the data that is exchanged (Intel x86/x64 is based on little-endian) - systems that use big-endian can still read data that is in little-endian (and vice versa), but they have to rearrange the data. When documenting your "protocol" just make it clear which one you are using.

  • are there any "settings" that have been set on the sockets which can affect how the "stream" behaves (e.g. SO_LINGER) - you might need to turn certain ones on or off if your code is very sensitive

  • how does congestion in the real world which causes delays in the stream affect your reading/writing logic

If the "message" being exchanged between a client and server (in either direction) can vary in size then often you need to use a strategy in order for that "message" to be exchanged in a reliable manner (aka Protocol).

Here are several different ways to handle the exchange:

  • have the message size encoded in a header that precedes the data - this could simply be a "number" in the first 2/4/8 bytes sent (dependent on your max message size), or could be a more exotic "header"

  • use a special "end of message" marker (sentinel), with the real data encoded/escaped if there is the possibility of real data being confused with an "end of marker"

  • use a timeout....i.e. a certain period of receiving no bytes means there is no more data for the message - however, this can be error prone with short timeouts, which can easily be hit on congested streams.

  • have a "command" and "data" channel on separate "connections"....this is the approach the FTP protocol uses (the advantage is clear separation of data from commands...at the expense of a 2nd connection)

Each approach has its pros and cons for "correctness".

The code below uses the "timeout" method, as that seems to be the one you want.

See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bk6w7hs8.aspx. You can get access to the NetworkStream on the TCPClient so you can change the ReadTimeout.

string SendCmd(string cmd, string ip, int port)
{
  var client = new TcpClient(ip, port);
  var data = Encoding.GetEncoding(1252).GetBytes(cmd);
  var stm = client.GetStream();
  // Set a 250 millisecond timeout for reading (instead of Infinite the default)
  stm.ReadTimeout = 250;
  stm.Write(data, 0, data.Length);
  byte[] resp = new byte[2048];
  var memStream = new MemoryStream();
  int bytesread = stm.Read(resp, 0, resp.Length);
  while (bytesread > 0)
  {
      memStream.Write(resp, 0, bytesread);
      bytesread = stm.Read(resp, 0, resp.Length);
  }
  return Encoding.GetEncoding(1252).GetString(memStream.ToArray());
}

As a footnote for other variations on this writing network code...when doing a Read where you want to avoid a "block", you can check the DataAvailable flag and then ONLY read what is in the buffer checking the .Length property e.g. stm.Read(resp, 0, stm.Length);

Is it possible in Java to catch two exceptions in the same catch block?

http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/exceptions/catch.html covers catching multiple exceptions in the same block.

 try {
     // your code
} catch (Exception1 | Exception2 ex) {
     // Handle 2 exceptions in Java 7
}

I'm making study cards, and this thread was helpful, just wanted to put in my two cents.

Tar archiving that takes input from a list of files

Yes:

tar -cvf allfiles.tar -T mylist.txt

Flexbox: 4 items per row

You've got flex-wrap: wrap on the container. That's good, because it overrides the default value, which is nowrap (source). This is the reason items don't wrap to form a grid in some cases.

In this case, the main problem is flex-grow: 1 on the flex items.

The flex-grow property doesn't actually size flex items. Its task is to distribute free space in the container (source). So no matter how small the screen size, each item will receive a proportional part of the free space on the line.

More specifically, there are eight flex items in your container. With flex-grow: 1, each one receives 1/8 of the free space on the line. Since there's no content in your items, they can shrink to zero width and will never wrap.

The solution is to define a width on the items. Try this:

_x000D_
_x000D_
.parent {_x000D_
  display: flex;_x000D_
  flex-wrap: wrap;_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
.child {_x000D_
  flex: 1 0 21%; /* explanation below */_x000D_
  margin: 5px;_x000D_
  height: 100px;_x000D_
  background-color: blue;_x000D_
}
_x000D_
<div class="parent">_x000D_
  <div class="child"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="child"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="child"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="child"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="child"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="child"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="child"></div>_x000D_
  <div class="child"></div>_x000D_
</div>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

With flex-grow: 1 defined in the flex shorthand, there's no need for flex-basis to be 25%, which would actually result in three items per row due to the margins.

Since flex-grow will consume free space on the row, flex-basis only needs to be large enough to enforce a wrap. In this case, with flex-basis: 21%, there's plenty of space for the margins, but never enough space for a fifth item.

Is there a way to compile node.js source files?

You can use the Closure compiler to compile your javascript.

You can also use CoffeeScript to compile your coffeescript to javascript.

What do you want to achieve with compiling?

The task of compiling arbitrary non-blocking JavaScript down to say, C sounds very daunting.

There really isn't that much speed to be gained by compiling to C or ASM. If you want speed gain offload computation to a C program through a sub process.

Why is using onClick() in HTML a bad practice?

You're probably talking about unobtrusive Javascript, which would look like this:

<a href="#" id="someLink">link</a>

with the logic in a central javascript file looking something like this:

$('#someLink').click(function(){
    popup('/map/', 300, 300, 'map');
    return false;
});

The advantages are

  • behaviour (Javascript) is separated from presentation (HTML)
  • no mixing of languages
  • you're using a javascript framework like jQuery that can handle most cross-browser issues for you
  • You can add behaviour to a lot of HTML elements at once without code duplication

Clear android application user data

This command worked for me:

adb shell pm clear packageName

Aligning a button to the center

For me it worked using flexbox, which is in my opinion the cleanest solution.

Add a css class around the parent div / element with :

.parent {
display: flex;
}

and for the button use:

.button {
justify-content: center;
}

You should use a parent div, otherwise the button doesn't 'know' what the middle of the page / element is.

If this is not working, try :

#wrapper {
    display:flex;
    justify-content: center;
}

Laravel Eloquent: How to get only certain columns from joined tables

For Laravel >= 5.2

Use the ->pluck() method

$roles = DB::table('roles')->pluck('title');

If you would like to retrieve an array containing the values of a single column, you may use the pluck method

For Laravel <= 5.1

Use the ->lists() method

$roles = DB::table('roles')->lists('title');

This method will return an array of role titles. You may also specify a custom key column for the returned array:

Ignore Typescript Errors "property does not exist on value of type"

I was able to get past this in typescript using something like:

let x = [ //data inside array ];
let y = new Map<any, any>();
for (var i=0; i<x.length; i++) {
    y.set(x[i], //value for this key here);
}

This seemed to be the only way that I could use the values inside X as keys for the map Y and compile.

Multiple left-hand assignment with JavaScript

var var1 = 1, var2 = 1, var3 = 1;

In this case var keyword is applicable to all the three variables.

var var1 = 1,
    var2 = 1,
    var3 = 1;

which is not equivalent to this:

var var1 = var2 = var3 = 1;

In this case behind the screens var keyword is only applicable to var1 due to variable hoisting and rest of the expression is evaluated normally so the variables var2, var3 are becoming globals

Javascript treats this code in this order:

/*
var 1 is local to the particular scope because of var keyword
var2 and var3 will become globals because they've used without var keyword
*/

var var1; //only variable declarations will be hoisted.

var1= var2= var3 = 1;

How to create a directive with a dynamic template in AngularJS?

If you want to use AngularJs Directive with dynamic template, you can use those answers,But here is more professional and legal syntax of it.You can use templateUrl not only with single value.You can use it as a function,which returns a value as url.That function has some arguments,which you can use.

Python+OpenCV: cv2.imwrite

enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here

Alternatively, with MTCNN and OpenCV(other dependencies including TensorFlow also required), you can:

1 Perform face detection(Input an image, output all boxes of detected faces):

from mtcnn.mtcnn import MTCNN
import cv2

face_detector = MTCNN()

img = cv2.imread("Anthony_Hopkins_0001.jpg")
detect_boxes = face_detector.detect_faces(img)
print(detect_boxes)

[{'box': [73, 69, 98, 123], 'confidence': 0.9996458292007446, 'keypoints': {'left_eye': (102, 116), 'right_eye': (150, 114), 'nose': (129, 142), 'mouth_left': (112, 168), 'mouth_right': (146, 167)}}]

2 save all detected faces to separate files:

for i in range(len(detect_boxes)):
    box = detect_boxes[i]["box"]
    face_img = img[box[1]:(box[1] + box[3]), box[0]:(box[0] + box[2])]
    cv2.imwrite("face-{:03d}.jpg".format(i+1), face_img)

3 or Draw rectangles of all detected faces:

for box in detect_boxes:
    box = box["box"]
    pt1 = (box[0], box[1]) # top left
    pt2 = (box[0] + box[2], box[1] + box[3]) # bottom right
    cv2.rectangle(img, pt1, pt2, (0,255,0), 2)
cv2.imwrite("detected-boxes.jpg", img)

Adding 'serial' to existing column in Postgres

TL;DR

Here's a version where you don't need a human to read a value and type it out themselves.

CREATE SEQUENCE foo_a_seq OWNED BY foo.a;
SELECT setval('foo_a_seq', coalesce(max(a), 0) + 1, false) FROM foo;
ALTER TABLE foo ALTER COLUMN a SET DEFAULT nextval('foo_a_seq');

Another option would be to employ the reusable Function shared at the end of this answer.

A non-interactive solution

Just adding to the other two answers, for those of us who need to have these Sequences created by a non-interactive script, while patching a live-ish DB for instance.

That is, when you don't wanna SELECT the value manually and type it yourself into a subsequent CREATE statement.

In short, you can not do:

CREATE SEQUENCE foo_a_seq
    START WITH ( SELECT max(a) + 1 FROM foo );

... since the START [WITH] clause in CREATE SEQUENCE expects a value, not a subquery.

Note: As a rule of thumb, that applies to all non-CRUD (i.e.: anything other than INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE) statements in pgSQL AFAIK.

However, setval() does! Thus, the following is absolutely fine:

SELECT setval('foo_a_seq', max(a)) FROM foo;

If there's no data and you don't (want to) know about it, use coalesce() to set the default value:

SELECT setval('foo_a_seq', coalesce(max(a), 0)) FROM foo;
--                         ^      ^         ^
--                       defaults to:       0

However, having the current sequence value set to 0 is clumsy, if not illegal.
Using the three-parameter form of setval would be more appropriate:

--                                             vvv
SELECT setval('foo_a_seq', coalesce(max(a), 0) + 1, false) FROM foo;
--                                                  ^   ^
--                                                is_called

Setting the optional third parameter of setval to false will prevent the next nextval from advancing the sequence before returning a value, and thus:

the next nextval will return exactly the specified value, and sequence advancement commences with the following nextval.

— from this entry in the documentation

On an unrelated note, you also can specify the column owning the Sequence directly with CREATE, you don't have to alter it later:

CREATE SEQUENCE foo_a_seq OWNED BY foo.a;

In summary:

CREATE SEQUENCE foo_a_seq OWNED BY foo.a;
SELECT setval('foo_a_seq', coalesce(max(a), 0) + 1, false) FROM foo;
ALTER TABLE foo ALTER COLUMN a SET DEFAULT nextval('foo_a_seq');

Using a Function

Alternatively, if you're planning on doing this for multiple columns, you could opt for using an actual Function.

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION make_into_serial(table_name TEXT, column_name TEXT) RETURNS INTEGER AS $$
DECLARE
    start_with INTEGER;
    sequence_name TEXT;
BEGIN
    sequence_name := table_name || '_' || column_name || '_seq';
    EXECUTE 'SELECT coalesce(max(' || column_name || '), 0) + 1 FROM ' || table_name
            INTO start_with;
    EXECUTE 'CREATE SEQUENCE ' || sequence_name ||
            ' START WITH ' || start_with ||
            ' OWNED BY ' || table_name || '.' || column_name;
    EXECUTE 'ALTER TABLE ' || table_name || ' ALTER COLUMN ' || column_name ||
            ' SET DEFAULT nextVal(''' || sequence_name || ''')';
    RETURN start_with;
END;
$$ LANGUAGE plpgsql VOLATILE;

Use it like so:

INSERT INTO foo (data) VALUES ('asdf');
-- ERROR: null value in column "a" violates not-null constraint

SELECT make_into_serial('foo', 'a');
INSERT INTO foo (data) VALUES ('asdf');
-- OK: 1 row(s) affected

org.hibernate.PersistentObjectException: detached entity passed to persist

Most likely the problem lies outside the code you are showing us here. You are trying to update an object that is not associated with the current session. If it is not the Invoice, then maybe it is an InvoiceItem that has already been persisted, obtained from the db, kept alive in some sort of session and then you try to persist it on a new session. This is not possible. As a general rule, never keep your persisted objects alive across sessions.

The solution will ie in obtaining the whole object graph from the same session you are trying to persist it with. In a web environment this would mean:

  • Obtain the session
  • Fetch the objects you need to update or add associations to. Preferabley by their primary key
  • Alter what is needed
  • Save/update/evict/delete what you want
  • Close/commit your session/transaction

If you keep having issues post some of the code that is calling your service.

Html.BeginForm and adding properties

As part of htmlAttributes,e.g.

Or you can pass null for action and controller to get the same default target as for BeginForm() without any parameters:

Html.BeginForm(
    null, null, FormMethod.Post, new { enctype="multipart/form-data"})

When to use static methods

I found a nice description, when to use static methods:

There is no hard and fast, well written rules, to decide when to make a method static or not, But there are few observations based upon experience, which not only help to make a method static but also teaches when to use static method in Java. You should consider making a method static in Java :

  1. If a method doesn't modify state of object, or not using any instance variables.

  2. You want to call method without creating instance of that class.

  3. A method is good candidate of being static, if it only work on arguments provided to it e.g. public int factorial(int number){}, this method only operate on number provided as argument.

  4. Utility methods are also good candidate of being static e.g. StringUtils.isEmpty(String text), this a utility method to check if a String is empty or not.

  5. If function of method will remain static across class hierarchy e.g. equals() method is not a good candidate of making static because every Class can redefine equality.

How to decrypt hash stored by bcrypt

To answer the original posters question.... to 'decrypt' the password, you have to do what a password cracker would do.

In other words, you'd run a program to read from a large list of potential passwords (a password dictionary) and you'd hash each one using bcrypt and the salt and complexity from the password you're trying to decipher. If you're lucky you'll find a match, but if the password is a strong one then you likely won't find a match.

Bcrypt has the added security characteristic of being a slow hash. If your password had been hashed with md5 (terrible choice) then you'd be able to check billions of passwords per second, but since it's hashed using bcrypt you will be able to check far fewer per second.

The fact that bcrypt is slow to hash and salted is what makes it a good choice for password storage even today. That being said I believe NIST recommends the PBKDF2 for password hashing.

Is it possible to change a UIButtons background color?

Another possibility (the best and most beautiful imho):

Create a UISegmentedControl with 2 segments in the required background color in Interface Builder. Set the type to 'bar'. Then, change it to having only one segment. Interface builder does not accept one segment so you have to do that programmatically.

Therefore, create an IBOutlet for this button and add this to the viewDidLoad of your view:

[segmentedButton removeSegmentAtIndex:1 animated:NO];

Now you have a beautiful glossy, colored button with the specified background color. For actions, use the 'value changed' event.

(I have found this on http://chris-software.com/index.php/2009/05/13/creating-a-nice-glass-buttons/). Thanks Chris!

Best way to randomize an array with .NET

This post has already been pretty well answered - use a Durstenfeld implementation of the Fisher-Yates shuffle for a fast and unbiased result. There have even been some implementations posted, though I note some are actually incorrect.

I wrote a couple of posts a while back about implementing full and partial shuffles using this technique, and (this second link is where I'm hoping to add value) also a follow-up post about how to check whether your implementation is unbiased, which can be used to check any shuffle algorithm. You can see at the end of the second post the effect of a simple mistake in the random number selection can make.

Google Maps: Auto close open InfoWindows?

Here is what I used if you are using many markers in a for loop (Django here). You can set an index on each marker and set that index every time you open a window. Closing the previously saved index:

markers = Array();
infoWindows = Array();
var prev_infowindow =false;
{% for obj in objects %}
var contentString = 'your content'
var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({
            content: contentString,
          });
var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
               position: {lat: {{ obj.lat }}, lng: {{ obj.lon }}},
               map: map,
               title: '{{ obj.name }}',
               infoWindowIndex : {{ forloop.counter0 }}
          });
google.maps.event.addListener(marker, 'click',
            function(event)
            {
           if( prev_infowindow ) {
               infoWindows[prev_infowindow].close();
                }
                prev_infowindow = this.infoWindowIndex;
                infoWindows[this.infoWindowIndex].open(map, this);
            }
        );

        infoWindows.push(infowindow);
        markers.push(marker);

      {% endfor %}

What's the difference between primitive and reference types?

These are the primitive types in Java:

  • boolean
  • byte
  • short
  • char
  • int
  • long
  • float
  • double

All the other types are reference types: they reference objects.

This is the first part of the Java tutorial about the basics of the language.

Laravel - Eloquent "Has", "With", "WhereHas" - What do they mean?

Document has already explain the usage. So I am using SQL to explain these methods

Example:

Assuming there is an Order (orders) has many OrderItem (order_items).

And you have already build the relationship between them.

// App\Models\Order:
public function orderItems() {
    return $this->hasMany('App\Models\OrderItem', 'order_id', 'id');
}

These three methods are all based on a relationship.

With

Result: with() return the model object and its related results.

Advantage: It is eager-loading which can prevent the N+1 problem.

When you are using the following Eloquent Builder:

Order::with('orderItems')->get();

Laravel change this code to only two SQL:

// get all orders:
SELECT * FROM orders;

// get the order_items based on the orders' id above
SELECT * FROM order_items WHERE order_items.order_id IN (1,2,3,4...);

And then laravel merge the results of the second SQL as different from the results of the first SQL by foreign key. At last return the collection results.

So if you selected columns without the foreign_key in closure, the relationship result will be empty:

Order::with(['orderItems' => function($query) {
           // $query->sum('quantity');
           $query->select('quantity'); // without `order_id`
       }
])->get();

#=> result:
[{  id: 1,
    code: '00001',
    orderItems: [],    // <== is empty
  },{
    id: 2,
    code: '00002',
    orderItems: [],    // <== is empty
  }...
}]

Has

Has will return the model's object that its relationship is not empty.

Order::has('orderItems')->get();

Laravel change this code to one SQL:

select * from `orders` where exists (
    select * from `order_items` where `order`.`id` = `order_item`.`order_id`
)

whereHas

whereHas and orWhereHas methods to put where conditions on your has queries. These methods allow you to add customized constraints to a relationship constraint.

Order::whereHas('orderItems', function($query) {
   $query->where('status', 1);
})->get();

Laravel change this code to one SQL:

select * from `orders` where exists (
    select *
    from `order_items`
    where `orders`.`id` = `order_items`.`order_id` and `status` = 1
)

Arrays are probably one of those things that can only be evaluated at runtime. Constants must be evaluated at compile time. Try using "readonly" instead of "const".

Getting the class of the element that fired an event using JQuery

Try:

$(document).ready(function() {
    $("a").click(function(event) {
       alert(event.target.id+" and "+$(event.target).attr('class'));
    });
});

Angular2 dynamic change CSS property

Just use standard CSS variables:

Your global css (eg: styles.css)

body {
  --my-var: #000
}

In your component's css or whatever it is:

span {
  color: var(--my-var)
}

Then you can change the value of the variable directly with TS/JS by setting inline style to html element:

document.querySelector("body").style.cssText = "--my-var: #000";

Otherwise you can use jQuery for it:

$("body").css("--my-var", "#fff");

Why do you need to put #!/bin/bash at the beginning of a script file?

It can be useful to someone that uses a different system that does not have that library readily available. If that is not declared and you have some functions in your script that are not supported by that system, you should declare #/bin/bash. I've ran into this problem before at work and now I just include it as a practice.

XML Document to String

Assuming doc is your instance of org.w3c.dom.Document:

TransformerFactory tf = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
Transformer transformer = tf.newTransformer();
transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.OMIT_XML_DECLARATION, "yes");
StringWriter writer = new StringWriter();
transformer.transform(new DOMSource(doc), new StreamResult(writer));
String output = writer.getBuffer().toString().replaceAll("\n|\r", "");

E: gnupg, gnupg2 and gnupg1 do not seem to be installed, but one of them is required for this operation

I faced the same issue:

E: gnupg, gnupg2 and gnupg1 do not seem to be installed, but one of them is required for this operation

I resolved by using the following commands:

apt-get update
apt-get install gnupg

Sort a List of Object in VB.NET

If you need a custom string sort, you can create a function that returns a number based on the order you specify.

For example, I had pictures that I wanted to sort based on being front side or clasp. So I did the following:

Private Function sortpictures(s As String) As Integer
    If Regex.IsMatch(s, "FRONT") Then
        Return 0
    ElseIf Regex.IsMatch(s, "SIDE") Then
        Return 1
    ElseIf Regex.IsMatch(s, "CLASP") Then
        Return 2
    Else
        Return 3
    End If
End Function

Then I call the sort function like this:

list.Sort(Function(elA As String, elB As String)
                  Return sortpictures(elA).CompareTo(sortpictures(elB))
              End Function)

How to use OUTPUT parameter in Stored Procedure

There are a several things you need to address to get it working

  1. The name is wrong its not @ouput its @code
  2. You need to set the parameter direction to Output.
  3. Don't use AddWithValue since its not supposed to have a value just you Add.
  4. Use ExecuteNonQuery if you're not returning rows

Try

SqlParameter output = new SqlParameter("@code", SqlDbType.Int);
output.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;
cmd.Parameters.Add(output);
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
MessageBox.Show(output.Value.ToString());

updating table rows in postgres using subquery

There are many ways to update the rows.

When it comes to UPDATE the rows using subqueries, you can use any of these approaches.

  1. Approach-1 [Using direct table reference]
UPDATE
  <table1>
SET
  customer=<table2>.customer,
  address=<table2>.address,
  partn=<table2>.partn
FROM
  <table2>
WHERE
  <table1>.address_id=<table2>.address_i;

Explanation: table1 is the table which we want to update, table2 is the table, from which we'll get the value to be replaced/updated. We are using FROM clause, to fetch the table2's data. WHERE clause will help to set the proper data mapping.

  1. Approach-2 [Using SubQueries]
UPDATE
  <table1>
SET
  customer=subquery.customer,
  address=subquery.address,
  partn=subquery.partn
FROM
  (
    SELECT
      address_id, customer, address, partn
    FROM  /* big hairy SQL */ ...
  ) AS subquery
WHERE
  dummy.address_id=subquery.address_id;

Explanation: Here we are using subquerie inside the FROM clause, and giving an alias to it. So that it will act like the table.

  1. Approach-3 [Using multiple Joined tables]
UPDATE
  <table1>
SET
  customer=<table2>.customer,
  address=<table2>.address,
  partn=<table2>.partn
FROM
  <table2> as t2
  JOIN <table3> as t3
  ON
    t2.id = t3.id
WHERE
  <table1>.address_id=<table2>.address_i;

Explanation: Sometimes we face the situation in that table join is so important to get proper data for the update. To do so, Postgres allows us to Join multiple tables inside the FROM clause.

  1. Approach-4 [Using WITH statement]

    • 4.1 [Using simple query]
WITH subquery AS (
    SELECT
      address_id,
      customer,
      address,
      partn
    FROM
      <table1>;
)
UPDATE <table-X>
SET customer = subquery.customer,
    address  = subquery.address,
    partn    = subquery.partn
FROM subquery
WHERE <table-X>.address_id = subquery.address_id;
  • 4.2 [Using query with complex JOIN]
WITH subquery AS (
    SELECT address_id, customer, address, partn
    FROM
      <table1> as t1
    JOIN
      <table2> as t2
    ON
      t1.id = t2.id;
    -- You can build as COMPLEX as this query as per your need.
)
UPDATE <table-X>
SET customer = subquery.customer,
    address  = subquery.address,
    partn    = subquery.partn
FROM subquery
WHERE <table-X>.address_id = subquery.address_id;

Explanation: From Postgres 9.1, this(WITH) concept has been introduces. Using that We can make any complex queries and generate desire result. Here we are using this approach to update the table.

I hope, this would be helpful.

How to initialize a nested struct?

One gotcha arises when you want to instantiate a public type defined in an external package and that type embeds other types that are private.

Example:

package animals

type otherProps{
  Name string
  Width int
}

type Duck{
  Weight int
  otherProps
}

How do you instantiate a Duck in your own program? Here's the best I could come up with:

package main

import "github.com/someone/animals"

func main(){
  var duck animals.Duck
  // Can't instantiate a duck with something.Duck{Weight: 2, Name: "Henry"} because `Name` is part of the private type `otherProps`
  duck.Weight = 2
  duck.Width = 30
  duck.Name = "Henry"
}

Is there a Newline constant defined in Java like Environment.Newline in C#?

As of Java 7:

System.lineSeparator()

Java API : System.lineSeparator

Returns the system-dependent line separator string. It always returns the same value - the initial value of the system property line.separator. On UNIX systems, it returns "\n"; on Microsoft Windows systems it returns "\r\n".

Creating instance list of different objects

I believe your best shot is to declare the list as a list of objects:

List<Object> anything = new ArrayList<Object>();

Then you can put whatever you want in it, like:

anything.add(new Employee(..))

Evidently, you will not be able to read anything out of the list without a proper casting:

Employee mike = (Employee) anything.get(0);

I would discourage the use of raw types like:

List anything = new ArrayList()

Since the whole purpose of generics is precisely to avoid them, in the future Java may no longer suport raw types, the raw types are considered legacy and once you use a raw type you are not allowed to use generics at all in a given reference. For instance, take a look a this another question: Combining Raw Types and Generic Methods

How to run SUDO command in WinSCP to transfer files from Windows to linux

JQuery $.ajax() post - data in a java servlet

You don't want a string, you really want a JS map of key value pairs. E.g., change:

 data: myDataVar.toString(),

with:

var myKeyVals = { A1984 : 1, A9873 : 5, A1674 : 2, A8724 : 1, A3574 : 3, A1165 : 5 }

var saveData = $.ajax({
      type: 'POST',
      url: "someaction.do?action=saveData",
      data: myKeyVals,
      dataType: "text",
      success: function(resultData) { alert("Save Complete") }
});
saveData.error(function() { alert("Something went wrong"); });

jQuery understands key value pairs like that, it does NOT understand a big string. It passes it simply as a string.

UPDATE: Code fixed.

How do you get current active/default Environment profile programmatically in Spring?

As already mentioned earlier. You could autowire Environment:

@Autowire
private Environment environment;

only you could do check for the needed environment much easier:

if (environment.acceptsProfiles(Profiles.of("test"))) {
    doStuffForTestEnv();
} else {
    doStuffForOtherProfiles();
}

git diff between two different files

I believe using --no-index is what you're looking for:

git diff [<options>] --no-index [--] <path> <path>

as mentioned in the git manual:

This form is to compare the given two paths on the filesystem. You can omit the --no-index option when running the command in a working tree controlled by Git and at least one of the paths points outside the working tree, or when running the command outside a working tree controlled by Git.

How to write to a CSV line by line?

General way:

##text=List of strings to be written to file
with open('csvfile.csv','wb') as file:
    for line in text:
        file.write(line)
        file.write('\n')

OR

Using CSV writer :

import csv
with open(<path to output_csv>, "wb") as csv_file:
        writer = csv.writer(csv_file, delimiter=',')
        for line in data:
            writer.writerow(line)

OR

Simplest way:

f = open('csvfile.csv','w')
f.write('hi there\n') #Give your csv text here.
## Python will convert \n to os.linesep
f.close()

How to import a new font into a project - Angular 5

You can try creating a css for your font with font-face (like explained here)

Step #1

Create a css file with font face and place it somewhere, like in assets/fonts

customfont.css

@font-face {
    font-family: YourFontFamily;
    src: url("/assets/font/yourFont.otf") format("truetype");
}

Step #2

Add the css to your .angular-cli.json in the styles config

"styles":[
 //...your other styles
 "assets/fonts/customFonts.css"
 ]

Do not forget to restart ng serve after doing this

Step #3

Use the font in your code

component.css

span {font-family: YourFontFamily; }

Converting a float to a string without rounding it

Some form of rounding is often unavoidable when dealing with floating point numbers. This is because numbers that you can express exactly in base 10 cannot always be expressed exactly in base 2 (which your computer uses).

For example:

>>> .1
0.10000000000000001

In this case, you're seeing .1 converted to a string using repr:

>>> repr(.1)
'0.10000000000000001'

I believe python chops off the last few digits when you use str() in order to work around this problem, but it's a partial workaround that doesn't substitute for understanding what's going on.

>>> str(.1)
'0.1'

I'm not sure exactly what problems "rounding" is causing you. Perhaps you would do better with string formatting as a way to more precisely control your output?

e.g.

>>> '%.5f' % .1
'0.10000'
>>> '%.5f' % .12345678
'0.12346'

Best Practice for Forcing Garbage Collection in C#

Not sure if it is a best practice, but when working with large amounts of images in a loop (i.e. creating and disposing a lot of Graphics/Image/Bitmap objects), i regularly let the GC.Collect.

I think I read somewhere that the GC only runs when the program is (mostly) idle, and not in the middle of a intensive loop, so that could look like an area where manual GC could make sense.

running multiple bash commands with subprocess

I just stumbled on a situation where I needed to run a bunch of lines of bash code (not separated with semicolons) from within python. In this scenario the proposed solutions do not help. One approach would be to save a file and then run it with Popen, but it wasn't possible in my situation.

What I ended up doing is something like:

commands = '''
echo "a"
echo "b"
echo "c"
echo "d"
'''

process = subprocess.Popen('/bin/bash', stdin=subprocess.PIPE, stdout=subprocess.PIPE)
out, err = process.communicate(commands)
print out

So I first create the child bash process and after I tell it what to execute. This approach removes the limitations of passing the command directly to the Popen constructor.

creating charts with angularjs

I've created an angular directive for xCharts which is a nice js chart library http://tenxer.github.io/xcharts/. You can install it using bower, quite easy: https://github.com/radu-cigmaian/ng-xCharts

Highcharts is also a solution, but it is not free for comercial use.

Can I call a constructor from another constructor (do constructor chaining) in C++?

If you want to be evil, you can use the in-place "new" operator:

class Foo() {
    Foo() { /* default constructor deliciousness */ }
    Foo(Bar myParam) {
      new (this) Foo();
      /* bar your param all night long */
    }
};

Seems to work for me.

edit

As @ElvedinHamzagic points out, if Foo contained an object which allocated memory, that object might not be freed. This complicates things further.

A more general example:

class Foo() {
private:
  std::vector<int> Stuff;
public:
    Foo()
      : Stuff(42)
    {
      /* default constructor deliciousness */
    }

    Foo(Bar myParam)
    {
      this->~Foo();
      new (this) Foo();
      /* bar your param all night long */
    }
};

Looks a bit less elegant, for sure. @JohnIdol's solution is much better.

python 2 instead of python 3 as the (temporary) default python?

You can use virtualenv

# Use this to create your temporary python "install"
# (Assuming that is the correct path to the python interpreter you want to use.)
virtualenv -p /usr/bin/python2.7 --distribute temp-python

# Type this command when you want to use your temporary python.
# While you are using your temporary python you will also have access to a temporary pip,
# which will keep all packages installed with it separate from your main python install.
# A shorter version of this command would be ". temp-python/bin/activate"
source temp-python/bin/activate

# When you no longer wish to use you temporary python type
deactivate

Enjoy!

How to deal with bad_alloc in C++?

You can catch it like any other exception:

try {
  foo();
}
catch (const std::bad_alloc&) {
  return -1;
}

Quite what you can usefully do from this point is up to you, but it's definitely feasible technically.

In general you cannot, and should not try, to respond to this error. bad_alloc indicates that a resource cannot be allocated because not enough memory is available. In most scenarios your program cannot hope to cope with that, and terminating soon is the only meaningful behaviour.

Worse, modern operating systems often over-allocate: on such systems, malloc and new can return a valid pointer even if there is not enough free memory left – std::bad_alloc will never be thrown, or is at least not a reliable sign of memory exhaustion. Instead, attempts to access the allocated memory will then result in a segmentation fault, which is not catchable (you can handle the segmentation fault signal, but you cannot resume the program afterwards).

The only thing you could do when catching std::bad_alloc is to perhaps log the error, and try to ensure a safe program termination by freeing outstanding resources (but this is done automatically in the normal course of stack unwinding after the error gets thrown if the program uses RAII appropriately).

In certain cases, the program may attempt to free some memory and try again, or use secondary memory (= disk) instead of RAM but these opportunities only exist in very specific scenarios with strict conditions:

  1. The application must ensure that it runs on a system that does not overcommit memory, i.e. it signals failure upon allocation rather than later.
  2. The application must be able to free memory immediately, without any further accidental allocations in the meantime.

It’s exceedingly rare that applications have control over point 1 — userspace applications never do, it’s a system-wide setting that requires root permissions to change.1

OK, so let’s assume you’ve fixed point 1. What you can now do is for instance use a LRU cache for some of your data (probably some particularly large business objects that can be regenerated or reloaded on demand). Next, you need to put the actual logic that may fail into a function that supports retry — in other words, if it gets aborted, you can just relaunch it:

lru_cache<widget> widget_cache;

double perform_operation(int widget_id) {
    std::optional<widget> maybe_widget = widget_cache.find_by_id(widget_id);
    if (not maybe_widget) {
        maybe_widget = widget_cache.store(widget_id, load_widget_from_disk(widget_id));
    }
    return maybe_widget->frobnicate();
}

…

for (int num_attempts = 0; num_attempts < MAX_NUM_ATTEMPTS; ++num_attempts) {
    try {
        return perform_operation(widget_id);
    } catch (std::bad_alloc const&) {
        if (widget_cache.empty()) throw; // memory error elsewhere.
        widget_cache.remove_oldest();
    }
}

// Handle too many failed attempts here.

But even here, using std::set_new_handler instead of handling std::bad_alloc provides the same benefit and would be much simpler.

1 If you’re creating an application that does control point 1, and you’re reading this answer, please shoot me an email, I’m genuinely curious about your circumstances.

What is the C++ Standard specified behavior of new in c++?

The usual notion is that if new operator cannot allocate dynamic memory of the requested size, then it should throw an exception of type std::bad_alloc.
However, something more happens even before a bad_alloc exception is thrown:

C++03 Section 3.7.4.1.3: says

An allocation function that fails to allocate storage can invoke the currently installed new_handler(18.4.2.2), if any. [Note: A program-supplied allocation function can obtain the address of the currently installed new_handler using the set_new_handler function (18.4.2.3).] If an allocation function declared with an empty exception-specification (15.4), throw(), fails to allocate storage, it shall return a null pointer. Any other allocation function that fails to allocate storage shall only indicate failure by throw-ing an exception of class std::bad_alloc (18.4.2.1) or a class derived from std::bad_alloc.

Consider the following code sample:

#include <iostream>
#include <cstdlib>

// function to call if operator new can't allocate enough memory or error arises
void outOfMemHandler()
{
    std::cerr << "Unable to satisfy request for memory\n";

    std::abort();
}

int main()
{
    //set the new_handler
    std::set_new_handler(outOfMemHandler);

    //Request huge memory size, that will cause ::operator new to fail
    int *pBigDataArray = new int[100000000L];

    return 0;
}

In the above example, operator new (most likely) will be unable to allocate space for 100,000,000 integers, and the function outOfMemHandler() will be called, and the program will abort after issuing an error message.

As seen here the default behavior of new operator when unable to fulfill a memory request, is to call the new-handler function repeatedly until it can find enough memory or there is no more new handlers. In the above example, unless we call std::abort(), outOfMemHandler() would be called repeatedly. Therefore, the handler should either ensure that the next allocation succeeds, or register another handler, or register no handler, or not return (i.e. terminate the program). If there is no new handler and the allocation fails, the operator will throw an exception.

What is the new_handler and set_new_handler?

new_handler is a typedef for a pointer to a function that takes and returns nothing, and set_new_handler is a function that takes and returns a new_handler.

Something like:

typedef void (*new_handler)();
new_handler set_new_handler(new_handler p) throw();

set_new_handler's parameter is a pointer to the function operator new should call if it can't allocate the requested memory. Its return value is a pointer to the previously registered handler function, or null if there was no previous handler.

How to handle out of memory conditions in C++?

Given the behavior of newa well designed user program should handle out of memory conditions by providing a proper new_handlerwhich does one of the following:

Make more memory available: This may allow the next memory allocation attempt inside operator new's loop to succeed. One way to implement this is to allocate a large block of memory at program start-up, then release it for use in the program the first time the new-handler is invoked.

Install a different new-handler: If the current new-handler can't make any more memory available, and of there is another new-handler that can, then the current new-handler can install the other new-handler in its place (by calling set_new_handler). The next time operator new calls the new-handler function, it will get the one most recently installed.

(A variation on this theme is for a new-handler to modify its own behavior, so the next time it's invoked, it does something different. One way to achieve this is to have the new-handler modify static, namespace-specific, or global data that affects the new-handler's behavior.)

Uninstall the new-handler: This is done by passing a null pointer to set_new_handler. With no new-handler installed, operator new will throw an exception ((convertible to) std::bad_alloc) when memory allocation is unsuccessful.

Throw an exception convertible to std::bad_alloc. Such exceptions are not be caught by operator new, but will propagate to the site originating the request for memory.

Not return: By calling abort or exit.

Input placeholders for Internet Explorer

With a jQuery implementation you can EASILY remove the default values when it is time to submit. Below is an example:

$('#submit').click(function(){
   var text = this.attr('placeholder');
   var inputvalue = this.val(); // you need to collect this anyways
   if (text === inputvalue) inputvalue = "";

   // $.ajax(... // do your ajax thing here

});

I know that you are looking for an overlay, but you might prefer the ease of this route (now knowing what I wrote above). If so, then I wrote this for my own projects and it works really nice (requires jQuery) and takes just a couple minutes to implement for your entire site. It offers grey text at first, light grey when in focus, and black when typing. It also offers the placeholder text whenever the input field is empty.

First set up your form and include your placeholder attributes on the input tags.

<input placeholder="enter your email here">

Just copy this code and save it as placeholder.js.

(function( $ ){

   $.fn.placeHolder = function() {
      var input = this;
      var text = input.attr('placeholder'); // make sure you have your placeholder attributes completed for each input field
      if (text) input.val(text).css({ color:'grey' });
      input.focus(function(){
         if (input.val() === text) input.css({ color:'lightGrey' }).selectRange(0,0).one('keydown', function(){
            input.val("").css({ color:'black' });
         });
      });
      input.blur(function(){
         if (input.val() == "" || input.val() === text) input.val(text).css({ color:'grey' });
      });
      input.keyup(function(){
        if (input.val() == "") input.val(text).css({ color:'lightGrey' }).selectRange(0,0).one('keydown', function(){
            input.val("").css({ color:'black' });
        });
      });
      input.mouseup(function(){
        if (input.val() === text) input.selectRange(0,0);
      });
   };

   $.fn.selectRange = function(start, end) {
      return this.each(function() {
        if (this.setSelectionRange) { this.setSelectionRange(start, end);
        } else if (this.createTextRange) {
            var range = this.createTextRange();
            range.collapse(true);
            range.moveEnd('character', end);
            range.moveStart('character', start);
            range.select();
        }
      });
   };

})( jQuery );

To use on just one input

$('#myinput').placeHolder();  // just one

This is how I recommend you implement it on all input fields on your site when the browser does not support HTML5 placeholder attributes:

var placeholder = 'placeholder' in document.createElement('input');
if (!placeholder) {
  $.getScript("../js/placeholder.js", function() {
      $(":input").each(function(){ // this will work for all input fields
        $(this).placeHolder();
      });
  });
}

how to call service method from ng-change of select in angularjs?

You have at least two issues in your code:

  • ng-change="getScoreData(Score)

    Angular doesn't see getScoreData method that refers to defined service

  • getScoreData: function (Score, callback)

    We don't need to use callback since GET returns promise. Use then instead.

Here is a working example (I used random address only for simulation):

HTML

<select ng-model="score"
        ng-change="getScoreData(score)"
        ng-options="score as score.name for score in  scores"></select>
    <pre>{{ScoreData|json}}</pre>

JS

var fessmodule = angular.module('myModule', ['ngResource']);

fessmodule.controller('fessCntrl', function($scope, ScoreDataService) {

    $scope.scores = [{
        name: 'Bukit Batok Street 1',
        URL: 'http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json?address=Singapore, SG, Singapore, 153 Bukit Batok Street 1&sensor=true'
    }, {
        name: 'London 8',
        URL: 'http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json?address=Singapore, SG, Singapore, London 8&sensor=true'
    }];

    $scope.getScoreData = function(score) {
        ScoreDataService.getScoreData(score).then(function(result) {
            $scope.ScoreData = result;
        }, function(result) {
            alert("Error: No data returned");
        });
    };

});

fessmodule.$inject = ['$scope', 'ScoreDataService'];

fessmodule.factory('ScoreDataService', ['$http', '$q', function($http) {

    var factory = {
        getScoreData: function(score) {
            console.log(score);
            var data = $http({
                method: 'GET',
                url: score.URL
            });

            return data;
        }
    }
    return factory;
}]);

MySQL - How to select rows where value is in array?

If the array element is not integer you can use something like below :

$skus  = array('LDRES10','LDRES12','LDRES11');   //sample data

if(!empty($skus)){
    $sql = "SELECT * FROM `products` WHERE `prodCode` IN ('" . implode("','", $skus) . "') "
}

PowerShell: Store Entire Text File Contents in Variable

Get-Content grabs data and dumps it into an array, line by line. Assuming there aren't other special requirements than you listed, you could just save your content into a variable?

$file = Get-Content c:\file\whatever.txt

Running just $file will return the full contents. Then you can just do $file.Count (because arrays already have a count method built in) to get the total # of lines.

Hope this helps! I'm not a scripting wiz, but this seemed easier to me than a lot of the stuff above.

What is the best way to compare 2 folder trees on windows?

You could also execute tree > tree.txt in both folders and then diff both tree.txt files with any file based diff tool (git diff).

How to fix SSL certificate error when running Npm on Windows?

The problem lies on your proxy. Because the location provider of your install package creates its own certificate and does not buy a verified one from an accepted authority, your proxy does not allow access to the targeted host. I assume that you bypass the proxy when using the Chrome Browser. So there is no checking.

There are some solutions to this problem. But all imply that you trust the package provider.

Possible solutions:

  1. As mentioned in other answers you can make an http:// access which may bypass your proxy. That's a bit dangerous, because the man in the middle can inject malware into you downloads.
  2. The wget suggests you to use a flag --no-check-certificate. This will add a proxy directive to your request. The proxy, if it understands the directive, does not check if the servers certificate is verified by an authority and passes the request. Perhaps there is a config with npm that does the same as the wget flag.
  3. You configure your proxy to accept CA npm. I don't know your proxy, so I can't give you a hint.

Difference between fprintf, printf and sprintf?

fprintf This is related with streams where as printf is a statement similar to fprintf but not related to streams, that is fprintf is file related

Stuck at ".android/repositories.cfg could not be loaded."

This happened on Windows 10 as well. I resolved it by creating an empty repositories.cfg file.

Does functional programming replace GoF design patterns?

Design Patterns in Dynamic Programming by Peter Norvig has thoughtful coverage of this general theme, though about 'dynamic' languages instead of 'functional' (there's overlap).

Publish to IIS, setting Environment Variable

You could alternatively pass in the desired ASPNETCORE_ENVIRONMENT into the dotnet publish command as an argument using:

/p:EnvironmentName=Staging

e.g.:

dotnet publish /p:Configuration=Release /p:EnvironmentName=Staging

This will generate out the web.config with the correct environment specified for your project:

<environmentVariables>
  <environmentVariable name="ASPNETCORE_ENVIRONMENT" value="Staging" />
</environmentVariables>

How do I split an int into its digits?

I don't necessarily recommend this (it's more efficient to work with the number rather than converting it to a string), but it's easy and it works :)

#include <algorithm>
#include <iostream>
#include <iterator>
#include <string>

#include <boost/lexical_cast.hpp>

int main()
{
    int n = 23984;
    std::string s = boost::lexical_cast<std::string>(n);
    std::copy(s.begin(), s.end(), std::ostream_iterator<char>(std::cout, "\n"));
    return 0;
}

Can we write our own iterator in Java?

You can implement your own Iterator. Your iterator could be constructed to wrap the Iterator returned by the List, or you could keep a cursor and use the List's get(int index) method. You just have to add logic to your Iterator's next method AND the hasNext method to take into account your filtering criteria. You will also have to decide if your iterator will support the remove operation.

How to get Client location using Google Maps API v3?

Try this :)

    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/jsapi"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function initialize() {
        var loc = {};
        var geocoder = new google.maps.Geocoder();
        if(google.loader.ClientLocation) {
            loc.lat = google.loader.ClientLocation.latitude;
            loc.lng = google.loader.ClientLocation.longitude;

            var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(loc.lat, loc.lng);
            geocoder.geocode({'latLng': latlng}, function(results, status) {
                if(status == google.maps.GeocoderStatus.OK) {
                    alert(results[0]['formatted_address']);
                };
            });
        }
    }

    google.load("maps", "3.x", {other_params: "sensor=false", callback:initialize});

MS Access - execute a saved query by name in VBA

You should investigate why VBA can't find queryname.

I have a saved query named qryAddLoginfoRow. It inserts a row with the current time into my loginfo table. That query runs successfully when called by name by CurrentDb.Execute.

CurrentDb.Execute "qryAddLoginfoRow"

My guess is that either queryname is a variable holding the name of a query which doesn't exist in the current database's QueryDefs collection, or queryname is the literal name of an existing query but you didn't enclose it in quotes.

Edit: You need to find a way to accept that queryname does not exist in the current db's QueryDefs collection. Add these 2 lines to your VBA code just before the CurrentDb.Execute line.

Debug.Print "queryname = '" & queryname & "'"
Debug.Print CurrentDb.QueryDefs(queryname).Name

The second of those 2 lines will trigger run-time error 3265, "Item not found in this collection." Then go to the Immediate window to verify the name of the query you're asking CurrentDb to Execute.

Can I use Homebrew on Ubuntu?

I just tried installing it using the ruby command but somehow the dependencies are not resolved hence brew does not completely install. But, try installing by cloning:

git clone https://github.com/Homebrew/linuxbrew.git ~/.linuxbrew

and then add the following to your .bash_profile:

export PATH="$HOME/.linuxbrew/bin:$PATH"
export MANPATH="$HOME/.linuxbrew/share/man:$MANPATH"
export INFOPATH="$HOME/.linuxbrew/share/info:$INFOPATH"

It should work..

Likelihood of collision using most significant bits of a UUID in Java

Use Time YYYYDDDD (Year + Day of Year) as prefix. This decreases database fragmentation in tables and indexes. This method returns byte[40]. I used it in a hybrid environment where the Active Directory SID (varbinary(85)) is the key for LDAP users and an application auto-generated ID is used for non-LDAP Users. Also the large number of transactions per day in transactional tables (Banking Industry) cannot use standard Int types for Keys

private static final DecimalFormat timeFormat4 = new DecimalFormat("0000;0000");

public static byte[] getSidWithCalendar() {
    Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance();
    String val = String.valueOf(cal.get(Calendar.YEAR));
    val += timeFormat4.format(cal.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_YEAR));
    val += UUID.randomUUID().toString().replaceAll("-", "");
    return val.getBytes();
}
