Coalesce will return the first non-null argument passed to it from left to right. If all arguemnts are null, it'll return null, but we're forcing an empty string there, so no null values will be returned.

Also note that the COALESCE operator is supported in standard SQL. This is not the case of IFNULL. So it is a good practice to get use the former. Additionally, bear in mind that COALESCE supports more than 2 parameters and it will iterate over them until a non-null coincidence is found.

You can write to the Excel "database" the same way. As you can see, you can select the version number to use so that you can downgrade Excel versions for the machine with Excel 2003. Actually, the same is true for using the Interop. You can use the lower version and it should work with Excel 2003 even though you only have the higher version on your development PC.

First of all, never use a for in loop to enumerate over an array. Never. Use good old for(var i = 0; i<arr.length; i++).

The reason behind this is the following: each object in JavaScript has a special field called prototype. Everything you add to that field is going to be accessible on every object of that type. Suppose you want all arrays to have a cool new function called filter_0 that will filter zeroes out.

This is a standard way to extend objects and add new methods. Lots of libraries do this. However, let's look at how for in works now:

Do you see? It suddenly thinks filter_0 is another array index. Of course, it is not really a numeric index, but for in enumerates through object fields, not just numeric indexes. So we're now enumerating through every numeric index and filter_0. But filter_0 is not a field of any particular array object, every array object has this property now.

Luckily, all objects have a hasOwnProperty method, which checks if this field really belongs to the object itself or if it is simply inherited from the prototype chain and thus belongs to all the objects of that type.

Yes, you can do this, but I doubt that it would improve performances, unless your query has a real large latency.

You could do:

If COST_QUERY_SETUP is really huge (e.g., you're calling some network service which is real slow) then, yes, you might still end up on top.

Otherwise, I'd try with indexing on id, or modifying the architecture.

In MySQL I think you could do this more easily with a multiple INSERT ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE (but am not sure, never tried).

As stated, unit tests are designed to run without interaction.

However, you can debug unit tests, just like any other code. The easiest way is to use the Debug button in the Test Results tab.

Being able to debug means being able to use breakpoints. Being able to use breakpoints, then, means being able to use Tracepoints, which I find extremely useful in every day debugging.

Essentially, Tracepoints allow you to write to the Output window (or, more accurately, to standard output). Optionally, you can continue to run, or you can stop like a regular breakpoint. This gives you the "functionality" you are asking for, without the need to rebuild your code, or fill it up with debug information.

Simply add a breakpoint, and then right-click on that breakpoint. Select the "When Hit..." option:

If you're displaying a user-readable file name, you do not want to use lastPathComponent. Instead, pass the full path to NSFileManager's displayNameAtPath: method. Including dependencies in a jar with Maven

This post may be a bit old, but I also had the same problem recently. The first solution proposed by John Stauffer is a good one, but I had some problems as I am working this spring. The spring's dependency-jars I use have some property files and xml-schemas declaration which share the same paths and names. Although these jars come from the same versions, the jar-with-dependencies maven-goal was overwriting theses file with the last file found.

In the end, the application was not able to start as the spring jars could not find the correct properties files. In this case the solution propose by Rop have solved my problem.

Also since then, the spring-boot project now exist. It has a very cool way to manage this problem by providing a maven goal which overload the package goal and provide its own class loader. See spring-boots Reference Guide

Why doesn't GCC optimize aaaaaa to (aaa)(aaa)?

GCC does actually optimize a*a*a*a*a*a to (a*a*a)*(a*a*a) when a is an integer. I tried with this command:

There are a lot of gcc flags but nothing fancy. They mean: Read from stdin; use O2 optimization level; output assembly language listing instead of a binary; the listing should use Intel assembly language syntax; the input is in C language (usually language is inferred from input file extension, but there is no file extension when reading from stdin); and write to stdout.

Here's the important part of the output. I've annotated it with some comments indicating what's going on in the assembly language:

If, for some reason, you finally need an array, you can do two things:

Use a List and then convert it to an array with myList.toArray()
Use an array of certain size. If you need more or less size, you can modify it with java.util.Arrays methods.

If you need to call the base constructor but not right away because your new (derived) class needs to do some data manipulation, the best solution is to resort to factory method. Transparent ARGB hex value

Transparency is controlled by the alpha channel (AA in #AARRGGBB). Maximal value (255 dec, FF hex) means fully opaque. Minimum value (0 dec, 00 hex) means fully transparent. Values in between are semi-transparent, i.e. the color is mixed with the background color.

To get a fully transparent color set the alpha to zero. RR, GG and BB are irrelevant in this case because no color will be visible. This means #00FFFFFF ("transparent White") is the same color as #00F0F8FF ("transparent AliceBlue"). To keep it simple one chooses black (#00000000) or white (#00FFFFFF) if the color does not matter.

First, make your code correct, without worrying about timing yet: i.e. a function that makes or receives a connection and performs 100 or 500 or whatever number of updates on that connection, then closes the connection. Once you have your code working correctly is the correct point at which to think about using timeit on it!

Function to Calculate a CRC16 Checksum

crcany will generate efficient C code for any CRC, and includes a library of over one hundred known CRC definitions.

Efficient CRC code uses tables instead of bit-wise calculations. crcany generates both byte-wise routines and word-wise routines, the latter tuned to the architecture they are generated on. Word-wise is the fastest. Byte-wise is still much faster than bit-wise, but the implementation is more easily portable over architectures.

You do not seem to have a protocol definition with a specific CRC definition that you need to match. In this case, you can pick any 16-bit CRC in the catalog, and you will get good performance.

If you have a relatively low bit error rate, e.g. single digit number of errors per packet, and you want to maximize your error detection performance, you would need to look at the packet size you are applying the CRC to, assuming that that is constant or bounded, and look at the performance of the best polynomials in Philip Koopman's extensive research. The classic CRCs, such as the CCITT/Kermit 16-bit CRC or the X.25 16-bit CRC are not the best performers.

One of the good 16-bit performers in Koopman's tables that is also in the catalog of CRCs used in practice is CRC-16/DNP. It has very good performance detecting up to 6-bit errors in a packet. Following is the code generated by crcany for that CRC definition. This code assumes a little-endian architecture for the word-wise calculation, e.g. Intel x86 and x86-64, and it assumes that uintmax_t is 64 bits. crcany can be used to generate alternative code for big-endian and other word sizes.

Following single line of code will avoid the duplicate rows of a DataTable:

dataTable.DefaultView.ToTable(true, "employeeid");

Where:

first parameter in ToTable() is a boolean which indicates whether you want distinct rows or not.
second parameter in the ToTable() is the column name based on which we have to select distinct rows. Only these columns will be in the returned datatable.

The same can be done from a DataSet, by accessing a specific DataTable:

The entity type <type> is not part of the model for the current context

Clearing the cache is too annoying when you need to clear the cache 30 times an hour.. so I installed a Chrome Extension called Classic Cache Killer that clears the cache on every page load.

Now my mock json, javascript, css, html and data refreshes every time on every page load.

I never have to worry if I need to clear my cache.

There are about 20 cache cleaners for Chrome I found, but this one seemed lightweight and zero effort. In an update, Cache Killer can now stay "always on".

It's rather simple. Private setters allow you to create read-only public or protected properties.

That's it. That's the only reason.

Yes, you can create a read-only property by only specifying the getter, but with auto-implmeneted properties you are required to specify both get and set, so if you want an auto-implemented property to be read-only, you must use private setters. There is no other way to do it.

It's true that Private setters were not created specificlly for auto-implemented read-only properties, but their use is a bit more esoteric for other reasons, largely centering around read-only properties and the use of reflection and serialization.

I just want to echo sam9046's modest comment as an alternative and potentially much easier solution that worked in my case: uninstall and install homebrew again from scratch. No sudo commands required.

You can also browse/modify the uninstall script from that link above if you need to ensure it won't affect your previously installed packages. In my case this was just my home machine so I just started over.

Write-back vs Write-Through caching?

Write-back and write-through describe policies when a write hit occurs, that is when the cache has the requested information. In these examples, we assume a single processor is writing to main memory with a cache.

Write-through: The information is written to the cache and memory, and the write finishes when both have finished. This has the advantage of being simpler to implement, and the main memory is always consistent (in sync) with the cache (for the uniprocessor case - if some other device modifies main memory, then this policy is not enough), and a read miss never results in writes to main memory. The obvious disadvantage is that every write hit has to do two writes, one of which accesses slower main memory.

Write-back: The information is written to a block in the cache. The modified cache block is only written to memory when it is replaced (in effect, a lazy write). A special bit for each cache block, the dirty bit, marks whether or not the cache block has been modified while in the cache. If the dirty bit is not set, the cache block is "clean" and a write miss does not have to write the block to memory.

The advantage is that writes can occur at the speed of the cache, and if writing within the same block only one write to main memory is needed (when the previous block is being replaced). The disadvantages are that this protocol is harder to implement, main memory can be not consistent (not in sync) with the cache, and reads that result in replacement may cause writes of dirty blocks to main memory.

The policies for a write miss are detailed in my first link.

These protocols don't take care of the cases with multiple processors and multiple caches, as is common in modern processors. For this, more complicated cache coherence mechanisms are required. Write-through caches have simpler protocols since a write to the cache is immediately reflected in memory.

Flatten an irregular list of lists

This will flatten a list or dictionary (or list of lists or dictionaries of dictionaries etc). It assumes that the values are strings and it creates a string that concatenates each item with a separator argument. If you wanted you could use the separator to split the result into a list object afterward. It uses recursion if the next value is a list or a string. Use the key argument to tell whether you want the keys or the values (set key to false) from the dictionary object.

JavaScript: Create and destroy class instance through class method

1- There is no way to actually destroy an object in javascript, but using delete, we could remove a reference from an object:

var obj = {};
obj.mypointer = null;
delete obj.mypointer;

2- The important point about the delete keyword is that it does not actually destroy the object BUT if only after deleting that reference to the object, there is no other reference left in the memory pointed to the same object, that object would be marked as collectible. The delete keyword deletes the reference but doesn't GC the actual object. it means if you have several references of the same object, the object will be collected just after you delete all the pointed references.

3- there are also some tricks and workarounds that could help us out, when we want to make sure we do not leave any memory leaks behind. for instance if you have an array consisting several objects, without any other pointed reference to those objects, if you recreate the array all those objects would be killed. For instance if you have var array = [{}, {}] overriding the value of the array like array = [] would remove the references to the two objects inside the array and those two objects would be marked as collectible.

4- for your solution the easiest way is just this:

As mentioned above, either setting storage.instance = null or delete storage.instance would suffice to remove the reference to the object and allow it to be cleaned up by the GC. The difference is that if you set it to null then the storage object still has a property called instance (with the value null). If you delete storage.instance then the storage object no longer has a property named instance.

and WHAT ABOUT destroy method ??

the paradoxical point here is if you use instance.destroy in the destroy function you have no access to the actual instance pointer, and it won't let you delete it.

The only way is to pass the reference to the destroy function and then delete it:

In my case this solved the restriction/situation just perfectly. No need to hack Firefox or servers. Just load your javascript/html file with that small php file into the server and you're done.

If you followed the examples from the link to MSDN and it's not working, then your problem is not the Image control. Using the string property that I suggested, try this:

I wasn't quite sure where I would store the start position, so I want to elaborate on David Boikes comment. I found that I could store that variable in the ui.item object itself and retrieve it in the stop function as so:

Notice that you will have to use the same case you used when you created the user using double quotes. Say you created "Dell-Sys" then you will have to issue exact the same whenever you refer to that user.

I think the best you do is to drop that user and recreate without illegal identifier characters and without double quotes so you can later refer to it in any case you want.

What you've done by following those directions is created an entirely new Python installation, separate from the system Python that is managed by Ubuntu packages.

The accepted answer by dr jimbob (using make altinstall) got me most of the way there, with python2.7 in /usr/local/bin but I also needed to install some third party modules. The nice thing is that easy_install gets its installation locations from the version of Python you are running, but I found I still needed to install easy_install for Python 2.7 otherwise I would get ImportError: No module named pkg_resources. So I did this:

In the terminal, you are running the node application and it is running your script. That is a very different execution environment than directly running your script in the browser. While the Javascript language is largely the same (both V8 if you're running the Chrome browser), the rest of the execution environment such as libraries available are not the same.

node.js is a server-side Javascript execution environment that combines the V8 Javascript engine with a bunch of server-side libraries. require() is one such feature that node.js adds to the environment. So, when you run node in the terminal, you are running an environment that contains require().

require() is not a feature that is built into the browser. That is a specific feature of node.js, not of a browser. So, when you try to have the browser run your script, it does not have require().

There are ways to run some forms of node.js code in a browser (but not all). For example, you can get browser substitutes for require() that work similarly (though not identically).

But, you won't be running a web server in your browser as that is not something the browser has the capability to do.

You may be interested in browserify which lets you use node-style modules in a browser using require() statements.

I would prefer to shelve changes instead of stashing them if I am not sharing my changes elsewhere.

Stashing is a git feature and doesn't give you the option to select specific files or changes inside a file. Shelving can do that but this is an IDE-specific feature, not a git feature:

As you can see I am able to choose to specify which files/lines to include on my shelve. Note that I can't do that with stashing.

Beware using shelves in the IDE may limit the portability of your patches because those changes are not stored in a .git folder.

AES Encryption for an NSString on the iPhone

I have put together a collection of categories for NSData and NSString which uses solutions found on Jeff LaMarche's blog and some hints by Quinn Taylor here on Stack Overflow.

It uses categories to extend NSData to provide AES256 encryption and also offers an extension of NSString to BASE64-encode encrypted data safely to strings.

Here's an example to show the usage for encrypting strings:

WHICH APPROACH SHOULD YOU USE?

If your component has several inputs, then, if you use ngOnChanges(), you will get all changes for all the inputs at once within ngOnChanges(). Using this approach, you can also compare current and previous values of the input that has changed and take actions accordingly.

However, if you want to do something when only a particular single input changes (and you don't care about the other inputs), then it might be simpler to use an input property setter. However, this approach does not provide a built in way to compare previous and current values of the changed input (which you can do easily with the ngOnChanges lifecycle method).

EDIT 2017-07-25: ANGULAR CHANGE DETECTION MAY STILL NOT FIRE UNDER SOME CIRCUMSTANCES

Normally, change detection for both setter and ngOnChanges will fire whenever the parent component changes the data it passes to the child, provided that the data is a JS primitive datatype(string, number, boolean). However, in the following scenarios, it will not fire and you have to take extra actions in order to make it work.

If you are using a nested object or array (instead of a JS primitive data type) to pass data from Parent to Child, change detection (using either setter or ngchanges) might not fire, as also mentioned in the answer by user: muetzerich. For solutions look here.
If you are mutating data outside of the angular context (i.e., externally), then angular will not know of the changes. You may have to use ChangeDetectorRef or NgZone in your component for making angular aware of external changes and thereby triggering change detection. Refer to this.

What's the difference between .so, .la and .a library files?

.so files are dynamic libraries. The suffix stands for "shared object", because all the applications that are linked with the library use the same file, rather than making a copy in the resulting executable.

.a files are static libraries. The suffix stands for "archive", because they're actually just an archive (made with the ar command -- a predecessor of tar that's now just used for making libraries) of the original .o object files.

Static and dynamic libraries each have pros and cons.

Dynamic libraries are especially useful for system libraries, like libc. These libraries often need to include code that's dependent on the specific OS and version, because kernel interfaces have changed. If you link a program with a static system library, it will only run on the version of the OS that this library version was written for. But if you use a dynamic library, it will automatically pick up the library that's installed on the system you run on.

jQuery makes it easy to set any attributes for an element - just use the .attr() method:

So in order not to confuse the Java Developer with the strange behavior that might occur for those coming from Javascript background. I guess that's why they force us to use final, this is not the JVM limitation.

Let's look at the Javascript example below:

In Javascript, the counter value will be 100, because there is only one counter variable from the beginning to end.

So any changes after the inner object creation (like line 1), it will not affect the inner object. So it will make confusion between two different outcome and behaviour (between Java and Javascript).

I believe that's why, Java decide to force it to be final, so the data is 'consistent' from the beginning to end.

Heap just guarantees that elements on higher levels are greater (for max-heap) or smaller (for min-heap) than elements on lower levels

I love the above answer and putting my comment just more specific to my need and usage. I had to get the n locations list find the distance from each location to specific point say (0,0) and then return the a m locations having smaller distance. I used Priority Queue which is Heap. For finding distances and putting in heap it took me n(log(n)) n-locations log(n) each insertion. Then for getting m with shortest distances it took m(log(n)) m-locations log(n) deletions of heaping up.

I if would have to do this with BST, it would have taken me n(n) worst case insertion.(Say the first value is very smaller and all other comes sequentially longer and longer and the tree spans to right child only or left child in case of smaller and smaller. The min would have taken O(1) time but again I had to balance. So from my situation and all above answers what I got is when you are only after the values at min or max priority basis go for heap.
