onclick event function in JavaScript

Two observations:

  1. You should write

    <input type="button" value="button text" />

    instead of

    <input type="button">button text</input>

  2. You should rename your function. The function click() is already defined on a button (it simulates a click), and gets a higher priority then your method.

Note that there are a couple of suggestions here that are plain wrong, and you shouldn't spend to much time on them:

  • Do not use onclick="javascript:myfunc()". Only use the javascript: prefix inside the href attribute of a hyperlink: <a href="javascript:myfunc()">.
  • You don't have to end with a semicolon. onclick="foo()" and onclick="foo();" both work just fine.
  • Event attributes in HTML are not case sensitive, so onclick, onClick and ONCLICK all work. It is common practice to write attributes in lowercase: onclick. note that javascript itself is case sensitive, so if you write document.getElementById("...").onclick = ..., then it must be all lowercase.

DateTime.ToString() format that can be used in a filename or extension?

The below list of time format specifiers most commonly used.,

dd -- day of the month, from 01 through 31.

MM -- month, from 01 through 12.

yyyy -- year as a four-digit number.

hh -- hour, using a 12-hour clock from 01 to 12.

mm -- minute, from 00 through 59.

ss -- second, from 00 through 59.

HH -- hour, using a 24-hour clock from 00 to 23.

tt -- AM/PM designator.

Using the above you will be able to form a unique name to your file name.

Here i have provided example

string fileName = "fileName_" + DateTime.Now.ToString("MM-dd-yyyy_hh-mm-ss-tt") + ".pdf";

OR

If you don't prefer to use symbols you can try this also.,

string fileName = "fileName_" + DateTime.Now.ToString("MMddyyyyhhmmsstt") + ".pdf";

Hope this helps to someone now or in future. :)

What does the explicit keyword mean?

Constructors append implicit conversion. To suppress this implicit conversion it is required to declare a constructor with a parameter explicit.

In C++11 you can also specify an "operator type()" with such keyword http://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/language/explicit With such specification you can use operator in terms of explicit conversions, and direct initialization of object.

P.S. When using transformations defined BY USER (via constructors and type conversion operator) it is allowed only one level of implicit conversions used. But you can combine this conversions with other language conversions

  • up integral ranks (char to int, float to double);
  • standart conversions (int to double);
  • convert pointers of objects to base class and to void*;

Function that creates a timestamp in c#

If you want timestamps that correspond to actual real times BUT also want them to be unique (for a given application instance), you can use the following code:

public class HiResDateTime
{
   private static long lastTimeStamp = DateTime.UtcNow.Ticks;
   public static long UtcNowTicks
   {
       get
       {
           long orig, newval;
           do
           {
               orig = lastTimeStamp;
               long now = DateTime.UtcNow.Ticks;
               newval = Math.Max(now, orig + 1);
           } while (Interlocked.CompareExchange
                        (ref lastTimeStamp, newval, orig) != orig);

           return newval;
       }
   }
}

Can we pass model as a parameter in RedirectToAction?

Using TempData

Represents a set of data that persists only from one request to the next

[HttpPost]
public ActionResult FillStudent(Student student1)
{
    TempData["student"]= new Student();
    return RedirectToAction("GetStudent","Student");
}

[HttpGet]
public ActionResult GetStudent(Student passedStd)
{
    Student std=(Student)TempData["student"];
    return View();
}

Alternative way Pass the data using Query string

return RedirectToAction("GetStudent","Student", new {Name="John", Class="clsz"});

This will generate a GET Request like Student/GetStudent?Name=John & Class=clsz

Ensure the method you want to redirect to is decorated with [HttpGet] as the above RedirectToAction will issue GET Request with http status code 302 Found (common way of performing url redirect)

Convert a double to a QString

Building on @Kristian's answer, I had a desire to display a fixed number of decimal places. That can be accomplished with other arguments in the QString::number(...) function. For instance, I wanted 3 decimal places:

double value = 34.0495834;
QString strValue = QString::number(value, 'f', 3);
// strValue == "34.050"

The 'f' specifies decimal format notation (more info here, you can also specify scientific notation) and the 3 specifies the precision (number of decimal places). Probably already linked in other answers, but more info about the QString::number function can be found here in the QString documentation

Unix command-line JSON parser?

I prefer python -m json.tool which seems to be available per default on most *nix operating systems per default.

$ echo '{"foo":1, "bar":2}' | python -m json.tool
{
    "bar": 2,
    "foo": 1
}

Note: Depending on your version of python, all keys might get sorted alphabetically, which can or can not be a good thing. With python 2 it was the default to sort the keys, while in python 3.5+ they are no longer sorted automatically, but you have the option to sort by key explicitly:

$ echo '{"foo":1, "bar":2}' | python3 -m json.tool --sort-keys
{
    "bar": 2,
    "foo": 1
}

$http.get(...).success is not a function

This might be redundant but the above most voted answer says .then(function (success) and that didn't work for me as of Angular version 1.5.8. Instead use response then inside the block response.data got me my json data I was looking for.

$http({
    method: 'get',
    url: 'data/data.json'
}).then(function (response) {
    console.log(response, 'res');
    data = response.data;
},function (error){
    console.log(error, 'can not get data.');
});

Removing carriage return and new-line from the end of a string in c#

If you are using multiple platforms you are safer using this method.

value.TrimEnd(System.Environment.NewLine.ToCharArray());

It will account for different newline and carriage-return characters.

C# Connecting Through Proxy

Automatic proxy detection is a process by which a Web proxy server is identified by the system and used to send requests on behalf of the client. This feature is also known as Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD). When automatic proxy detection is enabled, the system attempts to locate a proxy configuration script that is responsible for returning the set of proxies that can be used for the request.

what does it mean "(include_path='.:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php')"?

If you look at the PHP constant PATH_SEPARATOR, you will see it being ":" for you.

If you break apart your string ".:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php" using that character, you will get 3 parts.

  • . (this means the current directory your code is in)
  • /usr/share/pear
  • /usr/share/php

Any attempts to include()/require() things, will look in these directories, in this order.

It is showing you that in the error message to let you know where it could NOT find the file you were trying to require()

For your first require, if that is being included from your index.php, then you dont need the dir stuff, just do...

require_once ( 'db/config.php');

Setting DataContext in XAML in WPF

There are several issues here.

  1. You can't assign DataContext as DataContext="{Binding Employee}" because it's a complex object which can't be assigned as string. So you have to use <Window.DataContext></Window.DataContext> syntax.
  2. You assign the class that represents the data context object to the view, not an individual property so {Binding Employee} is invalid here, you just have to specify an object.
  3. Now when you assign data context using valid syntax like below
   <Window.DataContext>
      <local:Employee/>
   </Window.DataContext>

know that you are creating a new instance of the Employee class and assigning it as the data context object. You may well have nothing in default constructor so nothing will show up. But then how do you manage it in code behind file? You have typecast the DataContext.

    private void my_button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
    {
        Employee e = (Employee) DataContext;
    }
  1. A second way is to assign the data context in the code behind file itself. The advantage then is your code behind file already knows it and can work with it.

    public partial class MainWindow : Window
    {
       Employee employee = new Employee();

       public MainWindow()
       {
           InitializeComponent();

           DataContext = employee;
       }
    }

How to show a GUI message box from a bash script in linux?

alert and notify-send seem to be the same thing. I use notify-send for non-input messages as it doesn't steal focus and I cannot find a way to stop zenity etc. from doing this.

e.g.

# This will display message and then disappear after a delay:
notify-send "job complete"

# This will display message and stay on-screen until clicked:
notify-send -u critical "job complete"

Trying to mock datetime.date.today(), but not working

Several solutions are discussed in http://blog.xelnor.net/python-mocking-datetime/. In summary:

Mock object - Simple and efficient but breaks isinstance() checks:

target = datetime.datetime(2009, 1, 1)
with mock.patch.object(datetime, 'datetime', mock.Mock(wraps=datetime.datetime)) as patched:
    patched.now.return_value = target
    print(datetime.datetime.now())

Mock class

import datetime
import mock

real_datetime_class = datetime.datetime

def mock_datetime_now(target, dt):
    class DatetimeSubclassMeta(type):
        @classmethod
        def __instancecheck__(mcs, obj):
            return isinstance(obj, real_datetime_class)

    class BaseMockedDatetime(real_datetime_class):
        @classmethod
        def now(cls, tz=None):
            return target.replace(tzinfo=tz)

        @classmethod
        def utcnow(cls):
            return target

    # Python2 & Python3 compatible metaclass
    MockedDatetime = DatetimeSubclassMeta('datetime', (BaseMockedDatetime,), {})

    return mock.patch.object(dt, 'datetime', MockedDatetime)

Use as:

with mock_datetime_now(target, datetime):

How can I tell if a Java integer is null?

parseInt() is just going to throw an exception if the parsing can't complete successfully. You can instead use Integers, the corresponding object type, which makes things a little bit cleaner. So you probably want something closer to:

Integer s = null;

try {
  s = Integer.valueOf(startField.getText());
}
catch (NumberFormatException e) {
  // ...
}

if (s != null) { ... }

Beware if you do decide to use parseInt()! parseInt() doesn't support good internationalization, so you have to jump through even more hoops:

try {
    NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getIntegerInstance(locale);
    nf.setParseIntegerOnly(true);
    nf.setMaximumIntegerDigits(9); // Or whatever you'd like to max out at.

    // Start parsing from the beginning.
    ParsePosition p = new ParsePosition(0);

    int val = format.parse(str, p).intValue();
    if (p.getIndex() != str.length()) {
        // There's some stuff after all the digits are done being processed.
    }

    // Work with the processed value here.
} catch (java.text.ParseFormatException exc) {
    // Something blew up in the parsing.
}

center MessageBox in parent form

I have changed a little bit previous answer and compose WPF version of the MessageBoxEx. This code works for me great. Feel free to notify about issues of the code.

Please note: I use GeneralObjects.MainWindowInstance at ctor to initialize class with my main window, but actually I use it for any window due to some kind of cache for last parent window. Therefore you can simple remove out everything from ctor.

public class MessageBoxEx
{
    private static HwndSource source_ = null;
    private static HwndSourceHook hook_ = null;

    static MessageBoxEx()
    {
        try
        {
            // create cached
            createHwndSource_(GeneralObjects.MainWindowInstance);

            hook_ = new HwndSourceHook(HwndSourceHook);
        }
        finally

            }
        }

Overlapping Views in Android

If you want to add you custom Overlay screen on Layout, you can create a Custom Linear Layout and get control of drawing and key events. You can my tutorial- Overlay on Android Layout- http://prasanta-paul.blogspot.com/2010/08/overlay-on-android-layout.html

Getting an element from a Set

you can use Iterator class

import java.util.Iterator;
import java.util.HashSet;

public class MyClass {
 public static void main(String[ ] args) {
 HashSet<String> animals = new HashSet<String>();
animals.add("fox");
animals.add("cat");
animals.add("dog");
animals.add("rabbit");

Iterator<String> it = animals.iterator();
while(it.hasNext()) {
  String value = it.next();
  System.out.println(value);
 }
 }
}

Oracle date format picture ends before converting entire input string

Perhaps you should check NLS_DATE_FORMAT and use the date string conforming the format. Or you can use to_date function within the INSERT statement, like the following:

insert into visit
values(123456,
       to_date('19-JUN-13', 'dd-mon-yy'),
       to_date('13-AUG-13 12:56 A.M.', 'dd-mon-yyyy hh:mi A.M.'));

Additionally, Oracle DATE stores date and time information together.

Mock a constructor with parameter

To my knowledge, you can't mock constructors with mockito, only methods. But according to the wiki on the Mockito google code page there is a way to mock the constructor behavior by creating a method in your class which return a new instance of that class. then you can mock out that method. Below is an excerpt directly from the Mockito wiki:

Pattern 1 - using one-line methods for object creation

To use pattern 1 (testing a class called MyClass), you would replace a call like

   Foo foo = new Foo( a, b, c );

with

   Foo foo = makeFoo( a, b, c );

and write a one-line method

   Foo makeFoo( A a, B b, C c ) {
        return new Foo( a, b, c );
   }

It's important that you don't include any logic in the method; just the one line that creates the object. The reason for this is that the method itself is never going to be unit tested.

When you come to test the class, the object that you test will actually be a Mockito spy, with this method overridden, to return a mock. What you're testing is therefore not the class itself, but a very slightly modified version of it.

Your test class might contain members like

  @Mock private Foo mockFoo;
  private MyClass toTest = spy(new MyClass());

Lastly, inside your test method you mock out the call to makeFoo with a line like

  doReturn( mockFoo )
      .when( toTest )
      .makeFoo( any( A.class ), any( B.class ), any( C.class ));

You can use matchers that are more specific than any() if you want to check the arguments that are passed to the constructor.

If you're just wanting to return a mocked object of your class I think this should work for you. In any case you can read more about mocking object creation here:

PDO mysql: How to know if insert was successful

Given that most recommended error mode for PDO is ERRMODE_EXCEPTION, no direct execute() result verification will ever work. As the code execution won't even reach the condition offered in other answers.

So, there are three possible scenarios to handle the query execution result in PDO:

  1. To tell the success, no verification is needed. Just keep with your program flow.
  2. To handle the unexpected error, keep with the same - no immediate handling code is needed. An exception will be thrown in case of a database error, and it will bubble up to the site-wide error handler that eventually will result in a common 500 error page.
  3. To handle the expected error, like a duplicate primary key, and if you have a certain scenario to handle this particular error, then use a try..catch operator.

For a regular PHP user it sounds a bit alien - how's that, not to verify the direct result of the operation? - but this is exactly how exceptions work - you check the error somewhere else. Once for all. Extremely convenient.

So, in a nutshell: in a regular code you don't need any error handling at all. Just keep your code as is:

$stmt->bindParam(':field1', $field1, PDO::PARAM_STR);
$stmt->bindParam(':field2', $field2, PDO::PARAM_STR);
$stmt->execute();
echo "Success!"; // whatever

On success it will tell you so, on error it will show you the regular error page that your application is showing for such an occasion.

Only in case you have a handling scenario other than just reporting the error, put your insert statement in a try..catch operator, check whether it was the error you expected and handle it; or - if the error was any different - re-throw the exception, to make it possible to be handled by the site-wide error handler usual way. Below is the example code from my article on error handling with PDO:

try {
     $pdo->prepare("INSERT INTO users VALUES (NULL,?,?,?,?)")->execute($data);
} catch (PDOException $e) {
    if ($e->getCode() == 1062) {
        // Take some action if there is a key constraint violation, i.e. duplicate name
    } else {
        throw $e;
    }
}
echo "Success!";

In the code above we are checking for the particular error to take some action and re-throwing the exception for the any other error (no such table for example) which will be reported to a programmer.

While again - just to tell a user something like "Your insert was successful" no condition is ever needed.

Refresh (reload) a page once using jQuery?

You don't have a jQuery refresh function, because this is JavaScript basics.

Try this:

<body onload="if (location.href.indexOf('reload')==-1) location.replace(location.href+'?reload');">

When do items in HTML5 local storage expire?

Workaround using angular and localforage:

angular.module('app').service('cacheService', function() {

  return {
    set: function(key, value, expireTimeInSeconds) {
      return localforage.setItem(key, {
        data: value,
        timestamp: new Date().getTime(),
        expireTimeInMilliseconds: expireTimeInSeconds * 1000
      })
    },
    get: function(key) {
      return localforage.getItem(key).then(function(item) {
        if(!item || new Date().getTime() > (item.timestamp + item.expireTimeInMilliseconds)) {
          return null
        } else {
          return item.data
        }
      })
    }
  }

})

Include jQuery in the JavaScript Console

It's pretty easy to do this manually, as the other answers explain. But there's also the jQuerify plug-in.

Use -notlike to filter out multiple strings in PowerShell

Yep, but you have to put the array first in the expression:

Creating a PDF from a RDLC Report in the Background

This is easy to do, you can render the report as a PDF, and save the resulting byte array as a PDF file on disk. To do this in the background, that's more a question of how your app is written. You can just spin up a new thread, or use a BackgroundWorker (if this is a WinForms app), etc. There, of course, may be multithreading issues to be aware of.

Warning[] warnings;
string[] streamids;
string mimeType;
string encoding;
string filenameExtension;

byte[] bytes = reportViewer.LocalReport.Render(
    "PDF", null, out mimeType, out encoding, out filenameExtension,
    out streamids, out warnings);

using (FileStream fs = new FileStream("output.pdf", FileMode.Create))
{
    fs.Write(bytes, 0, bytes.Length);
}

All possible array initialization syntaxes

These are the current declaration and initialization methods for a simple array.

    string[] array = new string[3];
    string[] array2 = new string[] { "1", "2" ,"3" };
    string[] array3 = { "1", "2" ,"3" };
    string[] array4 = new[] { "1", "2" ,"3" };

Proxy Basic Authentication in C#: HTTP 407 error

I had a similar problem due to a password protected proxy server and couldn't find much in the way of information out there - hopefully this helps someone. I wanted to pick up the credentials as used by the customer's browser. However, the CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials and DefaultNetworkCredentials aren't working when the proxy has it's own username and password even though I had entered these details to ensure thatInternet explorer and Edge had access.

The solution for me in the end was to use a nuget package called "CredentialManagement.Standard" and the below code:

using WebClient webClient = new WebClient();
var request = WebRequest.Create("http://google.co.uk");
var proxy = request.Proxy.GetProxy(new Uri("http://google.co.uk"));

var cmgr = new CredentialManagement.Credential() { Target = proxy.Host };
if (cmgr.Load())
{
    var credentials = new NetworkCredential(cmgr.Username, cmgr.Password);
    webClient.Proxy.Credentials = credentials;
    webClient.Credentials = credentials;
}

This grabs credentials from 'Credentials Manager' - which can be found via Windows - click Start then search for 'Credentials Manager'. Credentials for the proxy that were manually entered when prompted by the browser will be in the Windows Credentials section.

Can I use a case/switch statement with two variables?

I don't believe a switch/case is any faster than a series of if/elseif's. They do the same thing, but if/elseif's you can check multiple variables. You cannot use a switch/case on more than one value.

A select query selecting a select statement

I was over-complicating myself. After taking a long break and coming back, the desired output could be accomplished by this simple query:

FROM Sandwiches
GROUP BY Sandwiches.[Sandwiches Type], Sandwiches.Bread;

Thanks for answering, it helped my train of thought.

How can I obfuscate (protect) JavaScript?

I can recommend JavaScript Utility by Patrick J. O'Neil. It can obfuscate/compact and compress and it seems to be pretty good at these. That said, I never tried integrating it in a build script of any kind.

As for obfuscating vs. minifying - I am not a big fan of the former. It makes debugging impossible (Error at line 1... "wait, there is only one line") and they always take time to unpack. But if you need to... well.

PYTHONPATH on Linux

  1. PYTHONPATH is an environment variable
  2. Yes (see https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/24802/on-which-unix-distributions-is-python-installed-as-part-of-the-default-install)
  3. /usr/lib/python2.7 on Ubuntu
  4. you shouldn't install packages manually. Instead, use pip. When a package isn't in pip, it usually has a setuptools setup script which will install the package into the proper location (see point 3).
  5. if you use pip or setuptools, then you don't need to set PYTHONPATH explicitly

If you look at the instructions for pyopengl, you'll see that they are consistent with points 4 and 5.

How do I undo 'git add' before commit?

If you type:

git status

Git will tell you what is staged, etc., including instructions on how to unstage:

use "git reset HEAD <file>..." to unstage

I find Git does a pretty good job of nudging me to do the right thing in situations like this.

Note: Recent Git versions (1.8.4.x) have changed this message:

(use "git rm --cached <file>..." to unstage)

What is lexical scope?

There is an important part of the conversation surrounding lexical and dynamic scoping that is missing: a plain explanation of the lifetime of the scoped variable - or when the variable can be accessed.

Dynamic scoping only very loosely corresponds to "global" scoping in the way that we traditionally think about it (the reason I bring up the comparison between the two is that it has already been mentioned - and I don't particularly like the linked article's explanation); it is probably best we don't make the comparison between global and dynamic - though supposedly, according to the linked article, "...[it] is useful as a substitute for globally scoped variables."

So, in plain English, what's the important distinction between the two scoping mechanisms?

Lexical scoping has been defined very well throughout the answers above: lexically scoped variables are available - or, accessible - at the local level of the function in which it was defined.

However - as it is not the focus of the OP - dynamic scoping has not received a great deal of attention and the attention it has received means it probably needs a bit more (that's not a criticism of other answers, but rather a "oh, that answer made we wish there was a bit more"). So, here's a little bit more:

Dynamic scoping means that a variable is accessible to the larger program during the lifetime of the function call - or, while the function is executing. Really, Wikipedia actually does a nice job with the explanation of the difference between the two. So as not to obfuscate it, here is the text that describes dynamic scoping:

...[I]n dynamic scoping (or dynamic scope), if a variable name's scope is a certain function, then its scope is the time-period during which the function is executing: while the function is running, the variable name exists, and is bound to its variable, but after the function returns, the variable name does not exist.

Using momentjs to convert date to epoch then back to date

There are a few things wrong here:

  • First, terminology. "Epoch" refers to the starting point of something. The "Unix Epoch" is Midnight, January 1st 1970 UTC. You can't convert an arbitrary "date string to epoch". You probably meant "Unix Time", which is often erroneously called "Epoch Time".

  • .unix() returns Unix Time in whole seconds, but the default moment constructor accepts a timestamp in milliseconds. You should instead use .valueOf() to return milliseconds. Note that calling .unix()*1000 would also work, but it would result in a loss of precision.

  • You're parsing a string without providing a format specifier. That isn't a good idea, as values like 1/2/2014 could be interpreted as either February 1st or as January 2nd, depending on the locale of where the code is running. (This is also why you get the deprecation warning in the console.) Instead, provide a format string that matches the expected input, such as:

    moment("10/15/2014 9:00", "M/D/YYYY H:mm")

  • .calendar() has a very specific use. If you are near to the date, it will return a value like "Today 9:00 AM". If that's not what you expected, you should use the .format() function instead. Again, you may want to pass a format specifier.

  • To answer your questions in comments, No - you don't need to call .local() or .utc().

Putting it all together:

var ts = moment("10/15/2014 9:00", "M/D/YYYY H:mm").valueOf();
var m = moment(ts);
var s = m.format("M/D/YYYY H:mm");
alert("Values are: ts = " + ts + ", s = " + s);

On my machine, in the US Pacific time zone, it results in:

Values are: ts = 1413388800000, s = 10/15/2014 9:00

Since the input value is interpreted in terms of local time, you will get a different value for ts if you are in a different time zone.

Also note that if you really do want to work with whole seconds (possibly losing precision), moment has methods for that as well. You would use .unix() to return the timestamp in whole seconds, and moment.unix(ts) to parse it back to a moment.

var ts = moment("10/15/2014 9:00", "M/D/YYYY H:mm").unix();
var m = moment.unix(ts);

Changing Node.js listening port

I usually manually set the port that I am listening on in the app.js file (assuming you are using express.js

var server = app.listen(8080, function() {
    console.log('Ready on port %d', server.address().port);
});

This will log Ready on port 8080 to your console.

How do I show a running clock in Excel?

See the below code (taken from this post)

Put this code in a Module in VBA (Developer Tab -> Visual Basic)

Dim TimerActive As Boolean
Sub StartTimer()
    Start_Timer
End Sub
Private Sub Start_Timer()
    TimerActive = True
    Application.OnTime Now() + TimeValue("00:01:00"), "Timer"
End Sub
Private Sub Stop_Timer()
    TimerActive = False
End Sub
Private Sub Timer()
    If TimerActive Then
        ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1).Value = Time
        Application.OnTime Now() + TimeValue("00:01:00"), "Timer"
    End If
End Sub

You can invoke the "StartTimer" function when the workbook opens and have it repeat every minute by adding the below code to your workbooks Visual Basic "This.Workbook" class in the Visual Basic editor.

Private Sub Workbook_Open()
    Module1.StartTimer
End Sub

Now, every time 1 minute passes the Timer procedure will be invoked, and set cell A1 equal to the current time.

Wrapping text inside input type="text" element HTML/CSS

You can not use input for it, you need to use textarea instead. Use textarea with the wrap="soft"code and optional the rest of the attributes like this:

<textarea name="text" rows="14" cols="10" wrap="soft"> </textarea>

Atributes: To limit the amount of text in it for example to "40" characters you can add the attribute maxlength="40" like this: <textarea name="text" rows="14" cols="10" wrap="soft" maxlength="40"></textarea> To hide the scroll the style for it. if you only use overflow:scroll; or overflow:hidden; or overflow:auto; it will only take affect for one scroll bar. If you want different attributes for each scroll bar then use the attributes like this overflow:scroll; overflow-x:auto; overflow-y:hidden; in the style area: To make the textarea not resizable you can use the style with resize:none; like this:

<textarea name="text" rows="14" cols="10" wrap="soft" maxlength="40" style="overflow:hidden; resize:none;></textarea>

That way you can have or example a textarea with 14 rows and 10 cols with word wrap and max character length of "40" characters that works exactly like a input text box does but with rows instead and without using input text.

NOTE: textarea works with rows unlike like input <input type="text" name="tbox" size="10"></input> that is made to not work with rows at all.

How to set variables in HIVE scripts

There are multiple options to set variables in Hive.

If you're looking to set Hive variable from inside the Hive shell, you can set it using hivevar. You can set string or integer datatypes. There are no problems with them.

SET hivevar:which_date=20200808;
select ${which_date};

If you're planning to set variables from shell script and want to pass those variables into your Hive script (HQL) file, you can use --hivevar option while calling hive or beeline command.

# shell script will invoke script like this
beeline --hivevar tablename=testtable -f select.hql
-- select.hql file
select * from <dbname>.${tablename};

C/C++ check if one bit is set in, i.e. int variable

i was trying to read a 32-bit integer which defined the flags for an object in PDFs and this wasn't working for me

what fixed it was changing the define:

#define CHECK_BIT(var,pos) ((var & (1 << pos)) == (1 << pos))

the operand & returns an integer with the flags that both have in 1, and it wasn't casting properly into boolean, this did the trick

Using an Alias in a WHERE clause

This is not possible directly, because chronologically, WHERE happens before SELECT, which always is the last step in the execution chain.

You can do a sub-select and filter on it:

SELECT * FROM
(
  SELECT A.identifier
    , A.name
    , TO_NUMBER(DECODE( A.month_no
      , 1, 200803
      , 2, 200804
      , 3, 200805
      , 4, 200806
      , 5, 200807
      , 6, 200808
      , 7, 200809
      , 8, 200810
      , 9, 200811
      , 10, 200812
      , 11, 200701
      , 12, 200702
      , NULL)) as MONTH_NO
    , TO_NUMBER(TO_CHAR(B.last_update_date, 'YYYYMM')) as UPD_DATE
  FROM table_a A
    , table_b B
  WHERE A.identifier = B.identifier
) AS inner_table
WHERE
  MONTH_NO > UPD_DATE

How to generate different random numbers in a loop in C++?

Don't know men. I found the best way for me after testing different ways like 10 minutes. ( Change the numbers in code to get big or small random number.)

    int x;
srand ( time(NULL) );
x = rand() % 1000 * rand() % 10000 ;
cout<<x;

How to gracefully handle the SIGKILL signal in Java

There are ways to handle your own signals in certain JVMs -- see this article about the HotSpot JVM for example.

By using the Sun internal sun.misc.Signal.handle(Signal, SignalHandler) method call you are also able to register a signal handler, but probably not for signals like INT or TERM as they are used by the JVM.

To be able to handle any signal you would have to jump out of the JVM and into Operating System territory.

What I generally do to (for instance) detect abnormal termination is to launch my JVM inside a Perl script, but have the script wait for the JVM using the waitpid system call.

I am then informed whenever the JVM exits, and why it exited, and can take the necessary action.

Testing if value is a function

I think the source of confusion is the distinction between a node's attribute and the corresponding property.

You're using:

$("a.button").parents("form").attr("onsubmit")

You're directly reading the onsubmit attribute's value (which must be a string). Instead, you should access the onsubmit property of the node:

$("a.button").parents("form").prop("onsubmit")

Here's a quick test:

<form id="form1" action="foo1.htm" onsubmit="return valid()"></form>
<script>
window.onload = function () {
    var form1 = document.getElementById("form1");

    function log(s) {
        document.write("<div>" + s + "</div>");
    }

    function info(v) {
        return "(" + typeof v + ") " + v;
    }

    log("form1 onsubmit property: " + info(form1.onsubmit));
    log("form1 onsubmit attribute: " + info(form1.getAttribute("onsubmit")));
};
</script>

This yields:

form1 onsubmit property: (function) function onsubmit(event) { return valid(); }
form1 onsubmit attribute: (string) return valid()

How to create a hex dump of file containing only the hex characters without spaces in bash?

tldr;

$ od -t x1 -A n -v <empty.zip | tr -dc '[:xdigit:]' && echo
504b0506000000000000000000000000000000000000
$

Explanation:

Use the od tool to print single hexadecimal bytes (-t x1) --- without address offsets (-A n) and without eliding repeated "groups" (-v) --- from empty.zip, which has been redirected to standard input. Pipe that to tr which deletes (-d) the complement (-c) of the hexadecimal character set ('[:xdigit:]'). You can optionally print a trailing newline (echo) as I've done here to separate the output from the next shell prompt.

Understanding dispatch_async

Swift version

This is the Swift version of David's Objective-C answer. You use the global queue to run things in the background and the main queue to update the UI.

DispatchQueue.global(qos: .background).async {

    // Background Thread

    DispatchQueue.main.async {
        // Run UI Updates
    }
}

The database must have a name (example DB1), try this one:

OracleConnection con = new OracleConnection("data source=DB1;user id=fastecit;password=fastecit");

In case the TNS is not defined you can also try this one:

OracleConnection con = new OracleConnection("Data Source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=localhost)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=DB1)));

Using a SELECT statement within a WHERE clause

This is a correlated sub-query.

(It is a "nested" query - this is very non-technical term though)

The inner query takes values from the outer-query (WHERE st.Date = ScoresTable.Date) thus it is evaluated once for each row in the outer query.

There is also a non-correlated form in which the inner query is independent as as such is only executed once.

e.g.

 SELECT * FROM ScoresTable WHERE Score =
   (SELECT MAX(Score) FROM Scores)

There is nothing wrong with using subqueries, except where they are not needed :)

Your statement may be rewritable as an aggregate function depending on what columns you require in your select statement.

SELECT Max(score), Date FROM ScoresTable
Group By Date

How to define unidirectional OneToMany relationship in JPA

My bible for JPA work is the Java Persistence wikibook. It has a section on unidirectional OneToMany which explains how to do this with a @JoinColumn annotation. In your case, i think you would want:

@OneToMany
@JoinColumn(name="TXTHEAD_CODE")
private Set<Text> text;

I've used a Set rather than a List, because the data itself is not ordered.

The above is using a defaulted referencedColumnName, unlike the example in the wikibook. If that doesn't work, try an explicit one:

@OneToMany
@JoinColumn(name="TXTHEAD_CODE", referencedColumnName="DATREG_META_CODE")
private Set<Text> text;

FloatingActionButton example with Support Library

So in your build.gradle file, add this:

compile 'com.android.support:design:27.1.1'

AndroidX Note: Google is introducing new AndroidX extension libraries to replace the older Support Libraries. To use AndroidX, first make sure you've updated your gradle.properties file, edited build.gradle to set compileSdkVersion to 28 (or higher), and use the following line instead of the previous compile one.

implementation 'com.google.android.material:material:1.0.0'

Next, in your themes.xml or styles.xml or whatever, make sure you set this- it's your app's accent color-- and the color of your FAB unless you override it (see below):

        <item name="colorAccent">@color/floating_action_button_color</item>

In the layout's XML:

<RelativeLayout
 ...
 xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto">

       <android.support.design.widget.FloatingActionButton
            android:id="@+id/myFAB"
            android:layout_width="wrap_content"
            android:layout_height="wrap_content"
            android:src="@drawable/ic_plus_sign"
            app:elevation="4dp"
            ... />

</RelativeLayout>

Or if you are using the AndroidX material library above, you'd instead use this:

<RelativeLayout
 ...
 xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto">

       <com.google.android.material.floatingactionbutton.FloatingActionButton
            android:id="@+id/myFAB"
            android:layout_width="wrap_content"
            android:layout_height="wrap_content"
            android:srcCompat="@drawable/ic_plus_sign"
            app:elevation="4dp"
            ... />

</RelativeLayout>

You can see more options in the docs (material docs here) (setRippleColor, etc.), but one of note is:

    app:fabSize="mini"

Another interesting one-- to change the background color of just one FAB, add:

    app:backgroundTint="#FF0000"

(for example to change it to red) to the XML above.

Anyway, in code, after the Activity/Fragment's view is inflated....

    FloatingActionButton myFab = (FloatingActionButton)  myView.findViewById(R.id.myFAB);
    myFab.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
        public void onClick(View v) {
            doMyThing();
        }
    });

Observations:

  • If you have one of those buttons that's on a "seam" splitting two views (using a RelativeLayout, for example) with, say, a negative bottom layout margin to overlap the border, you'll notice an issue: the FAB's size is actually very different on lollipop vs. pre-lollipop. You can actually see this in AS's visual layout editor when you flip between APIs-- it suddenly "puffs out" when you switch to pre-lollipop. The reason for the extra size seems to be that the shadow expands the size of the view in every direction. So you have to account for this when you're adjusting the FAB's margins if it's close to other stuff.
  • Here's a way to remove or change the padding if there's too much:

    if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT < Build.VERSION_CODES.LOLLIPOP) {
        RelativeLayout.LayoutParams p = (RelativeLayout.LayoutParams) myFab.getLayoutParams();
        p.setMargins(0, 0, 0, 0); // get rid of margins since shadow area is now the margin
        myFab.setLayoutParams(p);
    }

  • Also, I was going to programmatically place the FAB on the "seam" between two areas in a RelativeLayout by grabbing the FAB's height, dividing by two, and using that as the margin offset. But myFab.getHeight() returned zero, even after the view was inflated, it seemed. Instead I used a ViewTreeObserver to get the height only after it's laid out and then set the position. See this tip here. It looked like this:

        ViewTreeObserver viewTreeObserver = closeButton.getViewTreeObserver();
        if (viewTreeObserver.isAlive()) {
            viewTreeObserver.addOnGlobalLayoutListener(new ViewTreeObserver.OnGlobalLayoutListener() {
                @Override
                public void onGlobalLayout() {
                    if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT < Build.VERSION_CODES.JELLY_BEAN) {
                        closeButton.getViewTreeObserver().removeGlobalOnLayoutListener(this);
                    } else {
                        closeButton.getViewTreeObserver().removeOnGlobalLayoutListener(this);
                    }
                    // not sure the above is equivalent, but that's beside the point for this example...
                    RelativeLayout.LayoutParams params = (RelativeLayout.LayoutParams) closeButton.getLayoutParams();
                    params.setMargins(0, 0, 16, -closeButton.getHeight() / 2); // (int left, int top, int right, int bottom)
                    closeButton.setLayoutParams(params);
                }
            });
        }

    Not sure if this is the right way to do it, but it seems to work.

  • It seems you can make the shadow-space of the button smaller by decreasing the elevation.
  • If you want the FAB on a "seam" you can use layout_anchor and layout_anchorGravity here is an example:

    <android.support.design.widget.FloatingActionButton
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        app:layout_anchor="@id/appbar"
        app:layout_anchorGravity="bottom|right|end"
        android:src="@drawable/ic_discuss"
        android:layout_margin="@dimen/fab_margin"
        android:clickable="true"/>

Remember that you can automatically have the button jump out of the way when a Snackbar comes up by wrapping it in a CoordinatorLayout.

Dynamically Add C# Properties at Runtime

Have you taken a look at ExpandoObject?

see: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/csharpfaq/archive/2009/10/01/dynamic-in-c-4-0-introducing-the-expandoobject.aspx

From MSDN:

The ExpandoObject class enables you to add and delete members of its instances at run time and also to set and get values of these members. This class supports dynamic binding, which enables you to use standard syntax like sampleObject.sampleMember instead of more complex syntax like sampleObject.GetAttribute("sampleMember").

Allowing you to do cool things like:

dynamic dynObject = new ExpandoObject();
dynObject.SomeDynamicProperty = "Hello!";
dynObject.SomeDynamicAction = (msg) =>
    {
        Console.WriteLine(msg);
    };

dynObject.SomeDynamicAction(dynObject.SomeDynamicProperty);

Based on your actual code you may be more interested in:

public static dynamic GetDynamicObject(Dictionary<string, object> properties)
{
    return new MyDynObject(properties);
}

public sealed class MyDynObject : DynamicObject
{
    private readonly Dictionary<string, object> _properties;

    public MyDynObject(Dictionary<string, object> properties)
    {
        _properties = properties;
    }

    public override IEnumerable<string> GetDynamicMemberNames()
    {
        return _properties.Keys;
    }

    public override bool TryGetMember(GetMemberBinder binder, out object result)
    {
        if (_properties.ContainsKey(binder.Name))
        {
            result = _properties[binder.Name];
            return true;
        }
        else
        {
            result = null;
            return false;
        }
    }

    public override bool TrySetMember(SetMemberBinder binder, object value)
    {
        if (_properties.ContainsKey(binder.Name))
        {
            _properties[binder.Name] = value;
            return true;
        }
        else
        {
            return false;
        }
    }
}

That way you just need:

var dyn = GetDynamicObject(new Dictionary<string, object>()
    {
        {"prop1", 12},
    });

Console.WriteLine(dyn.prop1);
dyn.prop1 = 150;

Deriving from DynamicObject allows you to come up with your own strategy for handling these dynamic member requests, beware there be monsters here: the compiler will not be able to verify a lot of your dynamic calls and you won't get intellisense, so just keep that in mind.

Integer.valueOf() vs. Integer.parseInt()

Integer.valueOf() returns an Integer object, while Integer.parseInt() returns an int primitive.

How can I open a website in my web browser using Python?

From the doc.

The webbrowser module provides a high-level interface to allow displaying Web-based documents to users. Under most circumstances, simply calling the open() function from this module will do the right thing.

You have to import the module and use open() function. This will open https://nabinkhadka.com.np in the browser.

To open in new tab:

import webbrowser
webbrowser.open('https://nabinkhadka.com.np', new = 2)

Also from the doc.

If new is 0, the url is opened in the same browser window if possible. If new is 1, a new browser window is opened if possible. If new is 2, a new browser page (“tab”) is opened if possible

So according to the value of new, you can either open page in same browser window or in new tab etc.

Also you can specify as which browser (chrome, firebox, etc.) to open. Use get() function for this.

Should operator<< be implemented as a friend or as a member function?

operator<< implemented as a friend function:

#include <iostream>
#include <string>
using namespace std;

class Samp
{
public:
    int ID;
    string strName;
    friend std::ostream& operator<<(std::ostream &os, const Samp& obj);
};
 std::ostream& operator<<(std::ostream &os, const Samp& obj)
    {
        os << obj.ID<< “ ” << obj.strName;
        return os;
    }

int main()
{
   Samp obj, obj1;
    obj.ID = 100;
    obj.strName = "Hello";
    obj1=obj;
    cout << obj <<endl<< obj1;

}

OUTPUT:
100 Hello
100 Hello

This can be a friend function only because the object is on the right hand side of operator<< and argument cout is on the left hand side. So this can't be a member function to the class, it can only be a friend function.

php mail setup in xampp

XAMPP should have come with a "fake" sendmail program. In that case, you can use sendmail as well:

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
; http://php.net/smtp
;SMTP = localhost
; http://php.net/smtp-port
;smtp_port = 25

; For Win32 only.
; http://php.net/sendmail-from
;sendmail_from = [email protected]

; For Unix only. You may supply arguments as well (default: "sendmail -t -i").
; http://php.net/sendmail-path
sendmail_path = "C:/xampp/sendmail/sendmail.exe -t -i"

Sendmail should have a sendmail.ini with it; it should be configured as so:

# Example for a user configuration file

# Set default values for all following accounts.
defaults
logfile "C:\xampp\sendmail\sendmail.log"

# Mercury
#account Mercury
#host localhost
#from postmaster@localhost
#auth off

# A freemail service example
account ACCOUNTNAME_HERE
tls on
tls_certcheck off
host smtp.gmail.com
from EMAIL_HERE
auth on
user EMAIL_HERE
password PASSWORD_HERE

# Set a default account
account default : ACCOUNTNAME_HERE

Of course, replace ACCOUNTNAME_HERE with an arbitrary account name, replace EMAIL_HERE with a valid email (such as a Gmail or Hotmail), and replace PASSWORD_HERE with the password to your email. Now, you should be able to send mail. Remember to restart Apache (from the control panel or the batch files) to allow the changes to PHP to work.

SQL use CASE statement in WHERE IN clause

I realize this has been answered, but there is a slight issue with the accepted solution. It will return false positives. Easy to fix:

SELECT * FROM Products P
WHERE (@Status='published' and P.Status IN (1,3))
   or (@Status='standby' and P.Status IN  (2,5,9,6))
   or (@Status='deleted' and P.Status IN (4,5,8,10))
   or (@Status not in ('published','standby','deleted') and P.Status IN (1,2))

Parentheses aren't needed (although perhaps easier to read hence why I included them).

What is a "static" function in C?

First: It's generally a bad idea to include a .cpp file in another file - it leads to problems like this :-) The normal way is to create separate compilation units, and add a header file for the included file.

Secondly:

C++ has some confusing terminology here - I didn't know about it until pointed out in comments.

a) static functions - inherited from C, and what you are talking about here. Outside any class. A static function means that it isn't visible outside the current compilation unit - so in your case a.obj has a copy and your other code has an independent copy. (Bloating the final executable with multiple copies of the code).

b) static member function - what Object Orientation terms a static method. Lives inside a class. You call this with the class rather than through an object instance.

These two different static function definitions are completely different. Be careful - here be dragons.

How do I use PHP namespaces with autoload?

Class1 is not in the global scope.

See below for a working example:

<?php

function __autoload($class)
{
    $parts = explode('\\', $class);
    require end($parts) . '.php';
}

use Person\Barnes\David as MyPerson;

$class = new MyPerson\Class1();

Edit (2009-12-14):

Just to clarify, my usage of "use ... as" was to simplify the example.

The alternative was the following:

$class = new Person\Barnes\David\Class1();

or

use Person\Barnes\David\Class1;

// ...

$class = new Class1();

Return multiple fields as a record in PostgreSQL with PL/pgSQL

you can do this using OUT parameter and CROSS JOIN

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION get_object_fields(my_name text, OUT f1 text, OUT f2 text)
AS $$
SELECT t1.name, t2.name
FROM  table1 t1
CROSS JOIN table2 t2
WHERE t1.name = my_name AND t2.name = my_name;
$$ LANGUAGE SQL;

then use it as a table:

select get_object_fields( 'Pending') ;
get_object_fields
-------------------
(Pending,code)
(1 row)

or

select * from get_object_fields( 'Pending');
f1    |   f
---------+---------
Pending | code
(1 row)

or

select (get_object_fields( 'Pending')).f1;
f1
---------
Pending
(1 row)

In Go's http package, how do I get the query string on a POST request?

There are two ways of getting query params:

  1. Using reqeust.URL.Query()
  2. Using request.Form

In second case one has to be careful as body parameters will take precedence over query parameters. A full description about getting query params can be found here

https://golangbyexample.com/net-http-package-get-query-params-golang

Apache error: _default_ virtualhost overlap on port 443

To resolve the issue on a Debian/Ubuntu system modify the /etc/apache2/ports.conf settings file by adding NameVirtualHost *:443 to it. My ports.conf is the following at the moment:

# /etc/apache/ports.conf
# If you just change the port or add more ports here, you will likely also
# have to change the VirtualHost statement in
# /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default
# This is also true if you have upgraded from before 2.2.9-3 (i.e. from
# Debian etch). See /usr/share/doc/apache2.2-common/NEWS.Debian.gz and
# README.Debian.gz

NameVirtualHost *:80
Listen 80

<IfModule mod_ssl.c>
    # If you add NameVirtualHost *:443 here, you will also have to change
    # the VirtualHost statement in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default-ssl
    # to <VirtualHost *:443>
    # Server Name Indication for SSL named virtual hosts is currently not
    # supported by MSIE on Windows XP.

    NameVirtualHost *:443

    Listen 443
</IfModule>

<IfModule mod_gnutls.c>
    NameVirtualHost *:443
    Listen 443
</IfModule>

Furthermore ensure that 'sites-available/default-ssl' is not enabled, type a2dissite default-ssl to disable the site. While you're at it type a2dissite by itself to get a list and see if there is any other site settings that you have enabled that might be mapping onto port 443.

How do I select the "last child" with a specific class name in CSS?

$('.class')[$(this).length - 1]

or

$( "p" ).last().addClass( "selected" );

Setting up Eclipse with JRE Path

This may sound dumb, but it may be a fresh, or damaged install, so is the JDK installed? If not, go to the download site and download the latest version of Java JRE. Like I said, this may sound dumb, but it solved my problem.

Difference between modes a, a+, w, w+, and r+ in built-in open function?

Same info, just in table form

                  | r   r+   w   w+   a   a+
------------------|--------------------------
read              | +   +        +        +
write             |     +    +   +    +   +
write after seek  |     +    +   +
create            |          +   +    +   +
truncate          |          +   +
position at start | +   +    +   +
position at end   |                   +   +

where meanings are: (just to avoid any misinterpretation)

  • read - reading from file is allowed
  • write - writing to file is allowed

  • create - file is created if it does not exist yet

  • trunctate - during opening of the file it is made empty (all content of the file is erased)

  • position at start - after file is opened, initial position is set to the start of the file

  • position at end - after file is opened, initial position is set to the end of the file

Note: a and a+ always append to the end of file - ignores any seek movements.
BTW. interesting behavior at least on my win7 / python2.7, for new file opened in a+ mode:
write('aa'); seek(0, 0); read(1); write('b') - second write is ignored
write('aa'); seek(0, 0); read(2); write('b') - second write raises IOError

Pyspark: display a spark data frame in a table format

The show method does what you're looking for.

For example, given the following dataframe of 3 rows, I can print just the first two rows like this:

df = sqlContext.createDataFrame([("foo", 1), ("bar", 2), ("baz", 3)], ('k', 'v'))
df.show(n=2)

which yields:

+---+---+
|  k|  v|
+---+---+
|foo|  1|
|bar|  2|
+---+---+
only showing top 2 rows

typesafe select onChange event using reactjs and typescript

Since upgrading my typings to react 0.14.43 (I'm not sure exactly when this was introduced), the React.FormEvent type is now generic and this removes the need for a cast.

import React = require('react');

interface ITestState {
    selectedValue: string;
}

export class Test extends React.Component<{}, ITestState> {

    constructor() {
        super();
        this.state = { selectedValue: "A" };
    }

    change(event: React.FormEvent<HTMLSelectElement>) {
        // No longer need to cast to any - hooray for react!
        var safeSearchTypeValue: string = event.currentTarget.value;

        console.log(safeSearchTypeValue); // in chrome => B

        this.setState({
            selectedValue: safeSearchTypeValue
        });
    }

    render() {
        return (
            <div>
                <label htmlFor="searchType">Safe</label>
                <select className="form-control" id="searchType" onChange={ e => this.change(e) } value={ this.state.selectedValue }>
                    <option value="A">A</option>
                    <option value="B">B</option>
                </select>
                <h1>{this.state.selectedValue}</h1>
            </div>
        );
    }
}

How to move a file?

This is what I'm using at the moment:

import os, shutil
path = "/volume1/Users/Transfer/"
moveto = "/volume1/Users/Drive_Transfer/"
files = os.listdir(path)
files.sort()
for f in files:
    src = path+f
    dst = moveto+f
    shutil.move(src,dst)

Now fully functional. Hope this helps you.

Edit:

I've turned this into a function, that accepts a source and destination directory, making the destination folder if it doesn't exist, and moves the files. Also allows for filtering of the src files, for example if you only want to move images, then you use the pattern '*.jpg', by default, it moves everything in the directory

import os, shutil, pathlib, fnmatch

def move_dir(src: str, dst: str, pattern: str = '*'):
    if not os.path.isdir(dst):
        pathlib.Path(dst).mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
    for f in fnmatch.filter(os.listdir(src), pattern):
        shutil.move(os.path.join(src, f), os.path.join(dst, f))

HTML/JavaScript: Simple form validation on submit

You have several errors there.

First, you have to return a value from the function in the HTML markup: <form name="ff1" method="post" onsubmit="return validateForm();">

Second, in the JSFiddle, you place the code inside onLoad which and then the form won't recognize it - and last you have to return true from the function if all validation is a success - I fixed some issues in the update:

https://jsfiddle.net/mj68cq0b/

function validateURL(url) {
    var reurl = /^(http[s]?:\/\/){0,1}(www\.){0,1}[a-zA-Z0-9\.\-]+\.[a-zA-Z]{2,5}[\.]{0,1}/;
    return reurl.test(url);
}

function validateForm()
{
    // Validate URL
    var url = $("#frurl").val();
    if (validateURL(url)) { } else {
        alert("Please enter a valid URL, remember including http://");
        return false;
    }

    // Validate Title
    var title = $("#frtitle").val();
    if (title=="" || title==null) {
        alert("Please enter only alphanumeric values for your advertisement title");
        return false;
    }

    // Validate Email
    var email = $("#fremail").val();
    if ((/(.+)@(.+){2,}\.(.+){2,}/.test(email)) || email=="" || email==null) { } else {
        alert("Please enter a valid email");
        return false;
    }
  return true;
}

How do I pass along variables with XMLHTTPRequest

Yes that's the correct method to do it with a GET request.

However, please remember that multiple query string parameters should be separated with &

eg. ?variable1=value1&variable2=value2

How can I prevent java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "N/A"?

Integer.parseInt(str) throws NumberFormatException if the string does not contain a parsable integer. You can hadle the same as below.

int a;
String str = "N/A";

try {
   a = Integer.parseInt(str);
} catch (NumberFormatException nfe) {
  // Handle the condition when str is not a number.
}

Cursor inside cursor

This smells of something that should be done with a JOIN instead. Can you share the larger problem with us?

Hey, I should be able to get this down to a single statement, but I haven't had time to play with it further yet today and may not get to. In the mean-time, know that you should be able to edit the query for your inner cursor to create the row numbers as part of the query using the ROW_NUMBER() function. From there, you can fold the inner cursor into the outer by doing an INNER JOIN on it (you can join on a sub query). Finally, any SELECT statement can be converted to an UPDATE using this method:

UPDATE [YourTable/Alias]
   SET [Column] = q.Value
FROM
(
   ... complicate select query here ...
) q

Where [YourTable/Alias] is a table or alias used in the select query.

How to vertically align <li> elements in <ul>?

I assume that since you're using an XML declaration, you're not worrying about IE or older browsers.

So you can use display:table-cell and display:table-row like so:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
    <title></title>
    <style type="text/css">
        .toolbar ul {
            display:table-row;
        }
        .toolbar ul li
        {
            display: table-cell;
            height: 100px;
            list-style-type: none;
            margin: 10px;
            vertical-align: middle;
        }
        .toolbar ul li a {
            display:table-cell;
            vertical-align: middle;
            height:100px;
            border: solid 1px black;
        }
        .toolbar ul li.button a {
            height:50px;
            border: solid 1px black;
        }
    </style>
</head>
<body>
    <div class="toolbar">
        <ul>
            <li><a href="#">first item<br />
                first item<br />
                first item</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">second item</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">last item</a></li>
            <li class="button"><a href="#">button<br />
                button</a></li>
        </ul>
    </div>

Does functional programming replace GoF design patterns?

Design Patterns in Dynamic Programming by Peter Norvig has thoughtful coverage of this general theme, though about 'dynamic' languages instead of 'functional' (there's overlap).

Can't install any packages in Node.js using "npm install"

The repository is not down, it looks like they've changed how they host files (I guess they have restored some old code):

Now you have to add the /package-name/ before the -

Eg:

http://registry.npmjs.org/-/npm-1.1.48.tgz
http://registry.npmjs.org/npm/-/npm-1.1.48.tgz

There are 3 ways to solve it:

  • Use a complete mirror:
  • Use a public proxy:

    --registry http://165.225.128.50:8000

  • Host a local proxy:

    https://github.com/hughsk/npm-quickfix

git clone https://github.com/hughsk/npm-quickfix.git
cd npm-quickfix
npm set registry http://localhost:8080/
node index.js

I'd personally go with number 3 and revert to npm set registry http://registry.npmjs.org/ as soon as this get resolved.

Stay tuned here for more info: https://github.com/isaacs/npm/issues/2694

Detect changed input text box

You can use the input Javascript event in jQuery like this:

$('#inputDatabaseName').on('input',function(e){
    alert('Changed!')
});

In pure JavaScript:

document.querySelector("input").addEventListener("change",function () {
  alert("Input Changed");
})

Or like this:

<input id="inputDatabaseName" onchange="youFunction();"
onkeyup="this.onchange();" onpaste="this.onchange();" oninput="this.onchange();"/>

Check if a string is a valid date using DateTime.TryParse

If you want your dates to conform a particular format or formats then use DateTime.TryParseExact otherwise that is the default behaviour of DateTime.TryParse

DateTime.TryParse

This method tries to ignore unrecognized data, if possible, and fills in missing month, day, and year information with the current date. If s contains only a date and no time, this method assumes the time is 12:00 midnight. If s includes a date component with a two-digit year, it is converted to a year in the current culture's current calendar based on the value of the Calendar.TwoDigitYearMax property. Any leading, inner, or trailing white space character in s is ignored.

If you want to confirm against multiple formats then look at DateTime.TryParseExact Method (String, String[], IFormatProvider, DateTimeStyles, DateTime) overload. Example from the same link:

string[] formats= {"M/d/yyyy h:mm:ss tt", "M/d/yyyy h:mm tt",
                   "MM/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss", "M/d/yyyy h:mm:ss",
                   "M/d/yyyy hh:mm tt", "M/d/yyyy hh tt",
                   "M/d/yyyy h:mm", "M/d/yyyy h:mm",
                   "MM/dd/yyyy hh:mm", "M/dd/yyyy hh:mm"};
string[] dateStrings = {"5/1/2009 6:32 PM", "05/01/2009 6:32:05 PM",
                        "5/1/2009 6:32:00", "05/01/2009 06:32",
                        "05/01/2009 06:32:00 PM", "05/01/2009 06:32:00"};
DateTime dateValue;

foreach (string dateString in dateStrings)
{
   if (DateTime.TryParseExact(dateString, formats,
                              new CultureInfo("en-US"),
                              DateTimeStyles.None,
                              out dateValue))
      Console.WriteLine("Converted '{0}' to {1}.", dateString, dateValue);
   else
      Console.WriteLine("Unable to convert '{0}' to a date.", dateString);
}
// The example displays the following output:
//       Converted '5/1/2009 6:32 PM' to 5/1/2009 6:32:00 PM.
//       Converted '05/01/2009 6:32:05 PM' to 5/1/2009 6:32:05 PM.
//       Converted '5/1/2009 6:32:00' to 5/1/2009 6:32:00 AM.
//       Converted '05/01/2009 06:32' to 5/1/2009 6:32:00 AM.
//       Converted '05/01/2009 06:32:00 PM' to 5/1/2009 6:32:00 PM.
//       Converted '05/01/2009 06:32:00' to 5/1/2009 6:32:00 AM.

Synchronous request in Node.js

...4 years later...

Here is an original solution with the framework Danf (you don't need any code for this kind of things, only some config):

// config/common/config/sequences.js

'use strict';

module.exports = {
    executeMySyncQueries: {
        operations: [
            {
                order: 0,
                service: 'danf:http.router',
                method: 'follow',
                arguments: [
                    'www.example.com/api_1.php',
                    'GET'
                ],
                scope: 'response1'
            },
            {
                order: 1,
                service: 'danf:http.router',
                method: 'follow',
                arguments: [
                    'www.example.com/api_2.php',
                    'GET'
                ],
                scope: 'response2'
            },
            {
                order: 2,
                service: 'danf:http.router',
                method: 'follow',
                arguments: [
                    'www.example.com/api_3.php',
                    'GET'
                ],
                scope: 'response3'
            }
        ]
    }
};

Use the same order value for operations you want to be executed in parallel.

If you want to be even shorter, you can use a collection process:

// config/common/config/sequences.js

'use strict';

module.exports = {
    executeMySyncQueries: {
        operations: [
            {
                service: 'danf:http.router',
                method: 'follow',
                // Process the operation on each item
                // of the following collection.
                collection: {
                    // Define the input collection.
                    input: [
                        'www.example.com/api_1.php',
                        'www.example.com/api_2.php',
                        'www.example.com/api_3.php'
                    ],
                    // Define the async method used.
                    // You can specify any collection method
                    // of the async lib.
                    // '--' is a shorcut for 'forEachOfSeries'
                    // which is an execution in series.
                    method: '--'
                },
                arguments: [
                    // Resolve reference '@@.@@' in the context
                    // of the input item.
                    '@@.@@',
                    'GET'
                ],
                // Set the responses in the property 'responses'
                // of the stream.
                scope: 'responses'
            }
        ]
    }
};

Take a look at the overview of the framework for more informations.

How to add a recyclerView inside another recyclerView

you can use LayoutInflater to inflate your dynamic data as a layout file.

UPDATE : first create a LinearLayout inside your CardView's layout and assign an ID for it. after that create a layout file that you want to inflate. at last in your onBindViewHolder method in your "RAdaper" class. write these codes :

  mInflater = (LayoutInflater) context.getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);

  view = mInflater.inflate(R.layout.my_list_custom_row, parent, false);

after that you can initialize data and ClickListeners with your RAdapter Data. hope it helps.

this and this may useful :)

Importing files from different folder

If the purpose of loading a module from a specific path is to assist you during the development of a custom module, you can create a symbolic link in the same folder of the test script that points to the root of the custom module. This module reference will take precedence over any other modules installed of the same name for any script run in that folder.

I tested this on Linux but it should work in any modern OS that supports symbolic links.

One advantage to this approach is that you can you can point to a module that's sitting in your own local SVC branch working copy which can greatly simplify the development cycle time and reduce failure modes of managing different versions of the module.

Android Studio - UNEXPECTED TOP-LEVEL EXCEPTION:

Like everyone else said here, the support library (com.android.support) is being included more than once in your project. Try adding this in your build.gradle at the root level and it should exclude the support library from being exported via other project dependencies.

configurations {
    all*.exclude group: 'com.android.support', module: 'support-v4'
}

Create web service proxy in Visual Studio from a WSDL file

Since the true Binding URL for the web service is located in the file, you could do these simple steps from your local machine:

1) Save the file to your local computer for example:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Desktop\Webservice1.asmx

2) In Visual Studio Right Click on your project > Choose Add Web Reference, A dialog will open.

3) In the URL Box Copy the local file location above C:\Documents and Settings[user]\Desktop\Webservice1.asmx, Click Next

4) Now you will see the functions appear, choose your name for the reference, Click add reference

5) You are done! you can start using it as a namespace in your application don't worry that you used a local file, because anyway the true URL for the service is located in the file at the Binding section

jQuery events .load(), .ready(), .unload()

window load will wait for all resources to be loaded.

document ready waits for the document to be initialized.

unload well, waits till the document is being unloaded.

the order is: document ready, window load, ... ... ... ... window unload.

always use document ready unless you need to wait for your images to load.

shorthand for document ready:

$(function(){
    // yay!
});

SQL Update to the SUM of its joined values

This is a valid error. See this. Following (and others suggested below) are the ways to achieve this:-

UPDATE P
SET extrasPrice = t.TotalPrice
FROM BookingPitches AS P INNER JOIN
 (
  SELECT
    PitchID,
    SUM(Price) TotalPrice
  FROM
     BookingPitchExtras
  GROUP BY PitchID
  ) t
ON t.PitchID = p.ID

Change a column type from Date to DateTime during ROR migration

There's a change_column method, just execute it in your migration with datetime as a new type.

Jersey stopped working with InjectionManagerFactory not found

The only way I could solve it was via:

org.glassfish.jersey.core jersey-server ${jersey-2-version}

<dependency>
    <groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.containers</groupId>
    <artifactId>jersey-container-servlet</artifactId>
    <version>${jersey-2-version}</version>
</dependency>

<dependency>
    <groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.inject</groupId>
    <artifactId>jersey-hk2</artifactId>
    <version>${jersey-2-version}</version>
</dependency>

<!-- https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.glassfish.jersey.core/jersey-common -->
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.core</groupId>
    <artifactId>jersey-common</artifactId>
    <version>${jersey-2-version}</version>

<dependency>
    <groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.containers</groupId>
    <artifactId>jersey-container-servlet-core</artifactId>
    <version>${jersey-2-version}</version>
</dependency>

So, only if I added jersey-container-servlet and jersey-hk2 would it run without errors

Disable form autofill in Chrome without disabling autocomplete

I was recently faced with this problem, and with no simple solution since my fields can be prepopulated, I wanted to share an elegant hack I came up with by setting password type in the ready event.

Don't declare your input field as type password when creating it, but add a ready event listener to add it for you:

function createSecretTextInput(name,parent){
    var createInput = document.createElement("input");
    createInput.setAttribute('name', name);
    createInput.setAttribute('class', 'secretText');
    createInput.setAttribute('id', name+'SecretText');
    createInput.setAttribute('value', 'test1234');

    if(parent==null)
       document.body.appendChild(createInput);
    else
        document.getElementById(parent).appendChild(createInput);

    $(function(){
        document.getElementById(name+'SecretText').setAttribute('type', 'password');
    });
};

createSecretTextInput('name', null);

SQL Server: Make all UPPER case to Proper Case/Title Case

On Server Server 2016 and newer, you can use STRING_SPLIT

with t as (
    select 'GOOFYEAR Tire and Rubber Company' as n
    union all
    select 'THE HAPPY BEAR' as n
    union all
    select 'MONK HOUSE SALES' as n
    union all
    select 'FORUM COMMUNICATIONS' as n
)
select
    n,
    (
        select ' ' + (
            upper(left(value, 1))
            + lower(substring(value, 2, 999))
        )
        from (
            select value
            from string_split(t.n, ' ')
        ) as sq
        for xml path ('')
    ) as title_cased
from t

Example

X close button only using css

As a pure CSS solution for the close or 'times' symbol you can use the ISO code with the content property. I often use this for :after or :before pseudo selectors.

The content code is \00d7.

Example

div:after{
  display: inline-block;
  content: "\00d7"; /* This will render the 'X' */
}

You can then style and position the pseudo selector in any way you want. Hope this helps someone :).

How to add facebook share button on my website?

Android: how to refresh ListView contents?

I think refilling the same adapter with different data would be more or most better technique. Put this method in your Adapter class with right argument (the data list you want to display as names in my case) Call this where u update the data of list with updated list (names in my case)

public void refill(ArrayList<BeanDatabase> names) {
    list.clear();
    list.addAll(names);
    list.notifyDataSetChanged();
}

If you change the adapter or set the adapter again and again on when the list updates, then force close error would surely cause problems at some point. (Error:List data been updated but adapter doesn't notify the List View)

C# List of objects, how do I get the sum of a property

Here is example code you could run to make such test:

var f = 10000000;
var p = new int[f];

for(int i = 0; i < f; ++i)
{
    p[i] = i % 2;
}

var time = DateTime.Now;
p.Sum();
Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now - time);

int x = 0;
time = DateTime.Now;
foreach(var item in p){
   x += item;
}
Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now - time);

x = 0;
time = DateTime.Now;
for(int i = 0, j = f; i < j; ++i){
   x += p[i];
}
Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now - time);

The same example for complex object is:

void Main()
{
    var f = 10000000;
    var p = new Test[f];

    for(int i = 0; i < f; ++i)
    {
        p[i] = new Test();
        p[i].Property = i % 2;
    }

    var time = DateTime.Now;
    p.Sum(k => k.Property);
    Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now - time);

    int x = 0;
    time = DateTime.Now;
    foreach(var item in p){
        x += item.Property;
    }
    Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now - time);

    x = 0;
    time = DateTime.Now;
    for(int i = 0, j = f; i < j; ++i){
        x += p[i].Property;
    }
    Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now - time);
}

class Test
{
    public int Property { get; set; }
}

My results with compiler optimizations off are:

00:00:00.0570370 : Sum()
00:00:00.0250180 : Foreach()
00:00:00.0430272 : For(...)

and for second test are:

00:00:00.1450955 : Sum()
00:00:00.0650430 : Foreach()
00:00:00.0690510 : For()

it looks like LINQ is generally slower than foreach(...) but what is weird for me is that foreach(...) appears to be faster than for loop.

How to Ignore "Duplicate Key" error in T-SQL (SQL Server)

INSERT INTO KeyedTable(KeyField, Otherfield)
SELECT n.* FROM
    (SELECT 'PossibleDupeLiteral' AS KeyField, 'OtherfieldValue' AS Otherfield
     UNION ALL
     SELECT 'PossibleDupeLiteral', 'OtherfieldValue2'
    )
LEFT JOIN KeyedTable k
    ON k.KeyField=n.KeyField
WHERE k.KeyField IS NULL

This tells the Server to look for the same data (hopefully the same speedy way it does to check for duplicate keys) and insert nothing if it finds it.

I like the IGNORE_DUP_KEY solution too, but then anyone who relies on errors to catch problems will be mystified when the server silently ignores their dupe-key errors.

The reason I choose this over Philip Kelley's solution is that you can provide several rows of data and only have the missing ones actually get in:

Maximum number of rows of CSV data in excel sheet

CSV files have no limit of rows you can add to them. Excel won't hold more that the 1 million lines of data if you import a CSV file having more lines.

Excel will actually ask you whether you want to proceed when importing more than 1 million data rows. It suggests to import the remaining data by using the text import wizard again - you will need to set the appropriate line offset.

How do I convert datetime.timedelta to minutes, hours in Python?

Do you want to print the date in that format? This is the Python documentation: http://docs.python.org/2/library/datetime.html#strftime-strptime-behavior

>>> a = datetime.datetime(2013, 1, 7, 10, 31, 34, 243366)
>>> print a.strftime('%Y %d %B, %M:%S%p')
>>> 2013 07 January, 31:34AM

For the timedelta:

>>> a =  datetime.timedelta(0,5,41038)
>>> print '%s seconds, %s microseconds' % (a.seconds, a.microseconds)

But please notice, you should make sure it has the related value. For the above cases, it doesn't have the hours and minute values, and you should calculate from the seconds.

Missing `server' JVM (Java\jre7\bin\server\jvm.dll.)

To Fix The "Missing "server" JVM at C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\server\jvm.dll, please install or use the JRE or JDK that contains these missing components.

Follow these steps:

Go to oracle.com and install Java JRE7 (Check if Java 6 is not installed already)

After that, go to C:/Program files/java/jre7/bin

Here, create an folder called Server

Now go into the C:/Program files/java/jre7/bin/client folder

Copy all the data in this folder into the new C:/Program files/java/jre7/bin/Server folder

SQL Server replace, remove all after certain character

Could use CASE WHEN to leave those with no ';' alone.

    SELECT
    CASE WHEN CHARINDEX(';', MyText) > 0 THEN
    LEFT(MyText, CHARINDEX(';', MyText)-1) ELSE
    MyText END
    FROM MyTable

Can we open pdf file using UIWebView on iOS?

use this for open pdf file in webview

NSString *path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"mypdf" ofType:@"pdf"];
NSURL *targetURL = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:path];
NSURLRequest *request = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:targetURL];
UIWebView *webView=[[UIWebView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 300, 300)];
[[webView scrollView] setContentOffset:CGPointMake(0,500) animated:YES];
[webView stringByEvaluatingJavaScriptFromString:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"window.scrollTo(0.0, 50.0)"]];
[webView loadRequest:request];
[self.view addSubview:webView];
[webView release];

isset() and empty() - what to use

You can just use empty() - as seen in the documentation, it will return false if the variable has no value.

An example on that same page:

<?php
$var = 0;

// Evaluates to true because $var is empty
if (empty($var)) {
    echo '$var is either 0, empty, or not set at all';
}

// Evaluates as true because $var is set
if (isset($var)) {
    echo '$var is set even though it is empty';
}
?>

You can use isset if you just want to know if it is not NULL. Otherwise it seems empty() is just fine to use alone.

Postgresql column reference "id" is ambiguous

You need the table name/alias in the SELECT part (maybe (vg.id, name)) :

SELECT (vg.id, name) FROM v_groups vg
inner join people2v_groups p2vg on vg.id = p2vg.v_group_id
where p2vg.people_id =0;

Getting "The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure" when SMTP server has a valid certificate

Old post but as you said "why is it not using the correct certificate" I would like to offer an way to find out which SSL certificate is used for SMTP (see here) which required openssl:

openssl s_client -connect exchange01.int.contoso.com:25 -starttls smtp

This will outline the used SSL certificate for the SMTP service. Based on what you see here you can replace the wrong certificate (like you already did) with a correct one (or trust the certificate manually).

What are the "standard unambiguous date" formats for string-to-date conversion in R?

As a complement to @JoshuaUlrich answer, here is the definition of function as.Date.character:

as.Date.character
function (x, format = "", ...)
{
    charToDate <- function(x) {
        xx <- x[1L]
        if (is.na(xx)) {
            j <- 1L
            while (is.na(xx) && (j <- j + 1L) <= length(x)) xx <- x[j]
            if (is.na(xx))
                f <- "%Y-%m-%d"
        }
        if (is.na(xx) || !is.na(strptime(xx, f <- "%Y-%m-%d",
            tz = "GMT")) || !is.na(strptime(xx, f <- "%Y/%m/%d",
            tz = "GMT")))
            return(strptime(x, f))
        stop("character string is not in a standard unambiguous format")
    }
    res <- if (missing(format))
        charToDate(x)
    else strptime(x, format, tz = "GMT")
    as.Date(res)
}
<bytecode: 0x265b0ec>
<environment: namespace:base>

So basically if both strptime(x, format="%Y-%m-%d") and strptime(x, format="%Y/%m/%d") throws an NA it is considered ambiguous and if not unambiguous.

Output (echo/print) everything from a PHP Array

If you want to format the output on your own, simply add another loop (foreach) to iterate through the contents of the current row:

while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
    foreach ($row as $columnName => $columnData) {
        echo 'Column name: ' . $columnName . ' Column data: ' . $columnData . '<br />';
    }
}

Or if you don't care about the formatting, use the print_r function recommended in the previous answers.

while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
    echo '<pre>';
    print_r ($row);
    echo '</pre>';
}

print_r() prints only the keys and values of the array, opposed to var_dump() whichs also prints the types of the data in the array, i.e. String, int, double, and so on. If you do care about the data types - use var_dump() over print_r().

UPDATE if exists else INSERT in SQL Server 2008

Many people will suggest you use MERGE, but I caution you against it. By default, it doesn't protect you from concurrency and race conditions any more than multiple statements, but it does introduce other dangers:

http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/3074/use-caution-with-sql-servers-merge-statement/

Even with this "simpler" syntax available, I still prefer this approach (error handling omitted for brevity):

SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE;
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
UPDATE dbo.table SET ... WHERE PK = @PK;
IF @@ROWCOUNT = 0
BEGIN
  INSERT dbo.table(PK, ...) SELECT @PK, ...;
END
COMMIT TRANSACTION;

A lot of folks will suggest this way:

SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE;
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM dbo.table WHERE PK = @PK)
BEGIN
  UPDATE ...
END
ELSE
BEGIN
  INSERT ...
END
COMMIT TRANSACTION;

But all this accomplishes is ensuring you may need to read the table twice to locate the row(s) to be updated. In the first sample, you will only ever need to locate the row(s) once. (In both cases, if no rows are found from the initial read, an insert occurs.)

Others will suggest this way:

BEGIN TRY
  INSERT ...
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
  IF ERROR_NUMBER() = 2627
    UPDATE ...
END CATCH

However, this is problematic if for no other reason than letting SQL Server catch exceptions that you could have prevented in the first place is much more expensive, except in the rare scenario where almost every insert fails. I prove as much here:

Not sure what you think you gain by having a single statement; I don't think you gain anything. MERGE is a single statement but it still has to really perform multiple operations anyway - even though it makes you think it doesn't.

Event detect when css property changed using Jquery

Note

Mutation events have been deprecated since this post was written, and may not be supported by all browsers. Instead, use a mutation observer.

Yes you can. DOM L2 Events module defines mutation events; one of them - DOMAttrModified is the one you need. Granted, these are not widely implemented, but are supported in at least Gecko and Opera browsers.

Try something along these lines:

document.documentElement.addEventListener('DOMAttrModified', function(e){
  if (e.attrName === 'style') {
    console.log('prevValue: ' + e.prevValue, 'newValue: ' + e.newValue);
  }
}, false);

document.documentElement.style.display = 'block';

You can also try utilizing IE's "propertychange" event as a replacement to DOMAttrModified. It should allow to detect style changes reliably.

OpenVPN failed connection / All TAP-Win32 adapters on this system are currently in use

I found a solution to this. It's bloody witchcraft, but it works.

When you install the client, open Control Panel > Network Connections.

You'll see a disabled network connection that was added by the TAP installer (Local Area Connection 3 or some such).

Right Click it, click Enable.

The device will not reset itself to enabled, but that's ok; try connecting w/ the client again. It'll work.

Is there a better jQuery solution to this.form.submit();?

Your question in somewhat confusing in that that you don't explain what you mean by "current element".

If you have multiple forms on a page with all kinds of input elements and a button of type "submit", then hitting "enter" upon filling any of it's fields will trigger submission of that form. You don't need any Javascript there.

But if you have multiple "submit" buttons on a form and no other inputs (e.g. "edit row" and/or "delete row" buttons in table), then the line you posted could be the way to do it.

Another way (no Javascript needed) could be to give different values to all your buttons (that are of type "submit"). Like this:

<form action="...">
    <input type="hidden" name="rowId" value="...">
    <button type="submit" name="myaction" value="edit">Edit</button>
    <button type="submit" name="myaction" value="delete">Delete</button>
</form>

When you click a button only the form containing the button will be submitted, and only the value of the button you hit will be sent (along other input values).

Then on the server you just read the value of the variable "myaction" and decide what to do.

What's the key difference between HTML 4 and HTML 5?

You might be interested in this list of HTML5 elements and attributes.

Also, please note that it's "HTML 4", not "HTML4". Indeed, for HTML 5, both variants are used, but there is an important difference in meaning. HTML 5 refers to the name of the W3C specification, whereas "HTML5" is the document type of those HTML files with a text/html MIME type that follow this spec. The same goes for XHTML 5 vs. XHTML5.

Java Replacing multiple different substring in a string at once (or in the most efficient way)

If the string you are operating on is very long, or you are operating on many strings, then it could be worthwhile using a java.util.regex.Matcher (this requires time up-front to compile, so it won't be efficient if your input is very small or your search pattern changes frequently).

Below is a full example, based on a list of tokens taken from a map. (Uses StringUtils from Apache Commons Lang).

Map<String,String> tokens = new HashMap<String,String>();
tokens.put("cat", "Garfield");
tokens.put("beverage", "coffee");

String template = "%cat% really needs some %beverage%.";

// Create pattern of the format "%(cat|beverage)%"
String patternString = "%(" + StringUtils.join(tokens.keySet(), "|") + ")%";
Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile(patternString);
Matcher matcher = pattern.matcher(template);

StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
while(matcher.find()) {
    matcher.appendReplacement(sb, tokens.get(matcher.group(1)));
}
matcher.appendTail(sb);

System.out.println(sb.toString());

Once the regular expression is compiled, scanning the input string is generally very quick (although if your regular expression is complex or involves backtracking then you would still need to benchmark in order to confirm this!)

Ruby capitalize every word first letter

In Rails:

"kirk douglas".titleize => "Kirk Douglas"
#this also works for 'kirk_douglas'

end

w/o Rails (load rails's ActiveSupport to patch #titleize method to String)

require 'active_support/core_ext'
"kirk douglas".titleize #=> "Kirk Douglas"

(some) string use cases handled by #titleize

  • "kirk_douglas"
  • "kirk-douglas"

#titleize gotchas

Rails's titleize will convert things like dashes and underscores into spaces and can produce other unexpected results, especially with case-sensitive situations as pointed out by @JamesMcMahon:

"hEy lOok".titleize #=> "H Ey Lo Ok"

because it is meant to handle camel-cased code like:

"kirkDouglas".titleize #=> "Kirk Douglas"

To deal with this edge case you could clean your string with #downcase first before running #titleize. Of course if you do that you will wipe out any camelCased word separations:

"kirkDouglas".downcase.titleize #=> "Kirkdouglas"

In HTML5, can the <header> and <footer> tags appear outside of the <body> tag?

A head element followed by a body element.

You can either define the BODY element in the source code:

<html>
    <body>
        ... web-page ...
    </body>
</html>

or you can omit the BODY element:

<html>
    ... web-page ...
</html>

However, it is invalid to place the BODY element inside the web-page content (in-between other elements or text content), like so:

<html>
    ... content ...
    <body>
        ... content ...
    </body>
    ... content ...
</html>

        //should return an object with three keys:
        // name
        // totalScore
        // gamesPlayed

Calling JavaScript Function From CodeBehind

Calling a JavaScript function from code behind

Step 1 Add your Javascript code

<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">
    function Func() {
        alert("hello!")
    }
</script>

Step 2 Add 1 Script Manager in your webForm and Add 1 button too

Step 3 Add this code in your button click event

ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this.Page, Page.GetType(), "text", "Func()", true);

Running EXE with parameters

System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("PATH to exe", "Command Line Arguments");

Enter triggers button click

By pressing 'Enter' on focused <input type="text"> you trigger 'click' event on the first positioned element: <button> or <input type="submit">. If you press 'Enter' in <textarea>, you just make a new text line.

See the example here.

Your code prevents to make a new text line in <textarea>, so you have to catch key press only for <input type="text">.

But why do you need to press Enter in text field? If you want to submit form by pressing 'Enter', but the <button> must stay the first in the layout, just play with the markup: put the <input type="submit"> code before the <button> and use CSS to save the layout you need.

Catching 'Enter' and saving markup:

$('input[type="text"]').keypress(function (e) {
    var code = e.keyCode || e.which;
    if (code === 13)
    e.preventDefault();
    $("form").submit(); /*add this, if you want to submit form by pressing `Enter`*/
});

Ambiguous overload call to abs(double)

Its boils down to this: math.h is from C and was created over 10 years ago. In math.h, due to its primitive nature, the abs() function is "essentially" just for integer types and if you wanted to get the absolute value of a double, you had to use fabs(). When C++ was created it took math.h and made it cmath. cmath is essentially math.h but improved for C++. It improved things like having to distinguish between fabs() and abs, and just made abs() for both doubles and integer types. In summary either: Use math.h and use abs() for integers, fabs() for doubles or use cmath and just have abs for everything (easier and recommended)

Hope this helps anyone who is having the same problem!

How should I multiple insert multiple records?

Following up @Tim Mahy - There's two possible ways to feed SqlBulkCopy: a DataReader or via DataTable. Here the code for DataTable:

DataTable dt = new DataTable();
dt.Columns.Add(new DataColumn("Id", typeof(string)));
dt.Columns.Add(new DataColumn("Name", typeof(string)));
foreach (Entry entry in entries)
    dt.Rows.Add(new string[] { entry.Id, entry.Name });

using (SqlBulkCopy bc = new SqlBulkCopy(connection))
{ // the following 3 lines might not be neccessary
    bc.DestinationTableName = "Entries";
    bc.ColumnMappings.Add("Id", "Id");
    bc.ColumnMappings.Add("Name", "Name");

    bc.WriteToServer(dt);
}

Missing include "bits/c++config.h" when cross compiling 64 bit program on 32 bit in Ubuntu

On my 64 bit system I noticed that the following directory existed:

/usr/include/c++/4.4/x86_64-linux-gnu/32/bits

It would then make sense that on my 32 bit system that had been setup for 64bit cross compiling there should be a corresponding directory like:

/usr/include/c++/4.4/i686-linux-gnu/64/bits

I double checked and this directory did not exist. Running g++ with the verbose parameter showed that the compiler was actually looking for something in this location:

The error regarding the ignoring nonexistent directory was the clue. Unfortunately, I still don't know what package I need to install to have this directory show up so I just copied the /usr/include/c++/4.4/x86_64-linux-gnu/bits directory from my 64 bit machine to /usr/include/c++/4.4/i686-linux-gnu/64/bits on my 32 machine.

Now compiling with just the -m64 works correctly. The major drawback is that this is still not the correct way to do things and I am guessing the next time Update Manager installs and update to g++ things may break.

Can someone post a well formed crossdomain.xml sample?

This is what I've been using for development:

<?xml version="1.0" ?>

This is a very liberal approach, but is fine for my application.

As others have pointed out below, beware the risks of this.

Can jQuery check whether input content has changed?

Since the user can go into the OS menu and select paste using their mouse, there is no safe event that will trigger this for you. The only way I found that always works is to have a setInterval that checks if the input value has changed:

var inp = $('#input'),
    val = saved = inp.val(),
    tid = setInterval(function() {
        val = inp.val();
        if ( saved != val ) {
            console.log('#input has changed');
            saved = val;
    },50);

You can also set this up using a jQuery special event.

After trying several solutions, this worked for me:

  1. Go to IIS Manager
  2. Open the Site
  3. Click on Authentication
  4. Edit Anonymous Authentication.
  5. Select "Application pool identity"

The after_initialize callback pattern can be improved by simply doing the following

after_initialize :some_method_goes_here, :if => :new_record?

This has a non-trivial benefit if your init code needs to deal with associations, as the following code triggers a subtle n+1 if you read the initial record without including the associated.

  has_one :config
  after_initialize :init_config

  def init_config

Is it possible to write data to file using only JavaScript?

You can create files in browser using Blob and URL.createObjectURL. All recent browsers support this.

You can not directly save the file you create, since that would cause massive security problems, but you can provide it as a download link for the user. You can suggest a file name via the download attribute of the link, in browsers that support the download attribute. As with any other download, the user downloading the file will have the final say on the file name though.

var textFile = null,
  makeTextFile = function (text) {
    var data = new Blob([text], {type: 'text/plain'});

    // If we are replacing a previously generated file we need to
    // manually revoke the object URL to avoid memory leaks.
    if (textFile !== null) {
      window.URL.revokeObjectURL(textFile);
    }

    textFile = window.URL.createObjectURL(data);

    // returns a URL you can use as a href
    return textFile;
  };

Here's an example that uses this technique to save arbitrary text from a textarea.

If you want to immediately initiate the download instead of requiring the user to click on a link, you can use mouse events to simulate a mouse click on the link as Lifecube's answer did. I've created an updated example that uses this technique.

  var create = document.getElementById('create'),
    textbox = document.getElementById('textbox');

  create.addEventListener('click', function () {
    var link = document.createElement('a');
    link.setAttribute('download', 'info.txt');
    link.href = makeTextFile(textbox.value);
    document.body.appendChild(link);

    // wait for the link to be added to the document
    window.requestAnimationFrame(function () {
      var event = new MouseEvent('click');
      link.dispatchEvent(event);
      document.body.removeChild(link);
    });

  }, false);

Reportviewer tool missing in visual studio 2017 RC

** Update**: 11/19/2019

Microsoft has released a new version of the control 150.1400.0 in their Nuget library. My short testing shows that it works again in the forms designer where 150.1357.0 and 150.1358.0 did not. This includes being able to resize and modify the ReportViewer Tasks on the control itself.

** Update**: 8/18/2019

Removing the latest version and rolling back to 150.900.148.0 seems to work on multiple computers I'm using with VS2017 and VS2019.

You can roll back to 150.900.148 in the Nuget solution package manager. It works similarly to the previous versions. Use the drop down box to select the older version.

enter image description here

It may be easier to manually delete references to post 150.900 versions of ReportViewer and readd them than it is to fix them.

Remember to restart Visual Studio after changing the toolbox entry.

Update: 8/7/2019

A newer version of the ReportViewer control has been released, probably coinciding with Visual Studio 2019. I was working with V150.1358.0.

Following the directions in this answer gets the control in the designer's toolbox. But once dropped on the form it doesn't display. The control shows up below the form as a non-visual component.

This is working as designed according to Microsoft SQL BI support. This is the group responsible for the control.

While you still cannot interact with the control directly, these additional steps give a workaround so the control can be sized on the form. While now visible, the designer treats the control as if it didn't exist.

I've created a feedback request at the suggestion of Microsoft SQL BI support. Please consider voting on it to get Microsoft's attention.

Microsoft Azure Feedback page - Restore Designtime features of the WinForms ReportViewer Control

Additional steps:

  • After adding the reportviewer to the WinForm
  • Add a Panel Control to the WinForm.
  • In the form's form.designer.cs file, add the Reportviewer control to the panel.

      //
      // panel1
      //
      this.panel1.Controls.Add(this.reportViewer1);

  • Return to the form's designer, you should see the reportViewer on the panel

  • In the Properties panel select the ReportViewer in the controls list dropdown
  • Set the reportViewer's Dock property to Fill

Now you can position the reportViewer by actually interacting with the panel.

Update: Microsoft released a document on April 18, 2017 describing how to configure and use the reporting tool in Visual Studio 2017.

Visual Studio 2017 does not have the ReportViewer tool installed by default in the ToolBox. Installing the extension Microsoft Rdlc Report Designer for Visual Studio and then adding that to the ToolBox results in a non-visual component that appears below the form.

Microsoft Support had told me this is a bug, but as of April 21, 2017 it is "working as designed".

The following steps need to be followed for each project that requires ReportViewer.

  • If you have ReportViewer in the Toolbox, remove it. Highlight, right-click and delete.
    • You will have to have a project with a form open to do this.

Edited 8/7/2019 - It looks like the current version of the RDLC Report Designer extension no longer interferes. You need this to actually edit the reports.

  • If you have the Microsoft Rdlc Report Designer for Visual Studio extension installed, uninstall it.

  • Close your solution and restart Visual Studio. This is a crucial step, errors will occur if VS is not restarted when switching between solutions.

  • Open your solution.
  • Open the NuGet Package Manager Console (Tools/NuGet Package Manager/Package Manager Console)
  • At the PM> prompt enter this command, case matters.

    Install-Package Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportViewerControl.WinForms

    You should see text describing the installation of the package.

Now we can temporarily add the ReportViewer tool to the tool box.

  • Right-click in the toolbox and use Choose Items...

  • We need to browse to the proper DLL that is located in the solutions Packages folder, so hit the browse button.

  • In our example we can paste in the packages folder as shown in the text of Package Manager Console.

    C:\Users\jdoe\Documents\Projects\_Test\ReportViewerTest\WindowsFormsApp1\packages

  • Then double click on the folder named Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportViewerControl.Winforms.140.340.80

    The version number will probably change in the future.

  • Then double-click on lib and again on net40.

  • Finally, double click on the file Microsoft.ReportViewer.WinForms.dll

    You should see ReportViewer checked in the dialog. Scroll to the right and you will see the version 14.0.0.0 associated to it.

  • Click OK.

ReportViewer is now located in the ToolBox.

  • Drag the tool to the desired form(s).

  • Once completed, delete the ReportViewer tool from the tool box. You can't use it with another project.

  • You may save the project and are good to go.

Remember to restart Visual Studio any time you need to open a project with ReportViewer so that the DLL is loaded from the correct location. If you try and open a solution with a form with ReportViewer without restarting you will see errors indicating that the “The variable 'reportViewer1' is either undeclared or was never assigned.“.

If you add a new project to the same solution you need to create the project, save the solution, restart Visual Studio and then you should be able to add the ReportViewer to the form. I have seen it not work the first time and show up as a non-visual component.

When that happens, removing the component from the form, deleting the Microsoft.ReportViewer.* references from the project, saving and restarting usually works.

How do I execute a program using Maven?

With the global configuration that you have defined for the exec-maven-plugin:

<plugin>
  <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
  <artifactId>exec-maven-plugin</artifactId>
  <version>1.4.0</version>
  <configuration>
    <mainClass>org.dhappy.test.NeoTraverse</mainClass>
  </configuration>
</plugin>

invoking mvn exec:java on the command line will invoke the plugin which is configured to execute the class org.dhappy.test.NeoTraverse.

So, to trigger the plugin from the command line, just run:

mvn exec:java

Now, if you want to execute the exec:java goal as part of your standard build, you'll need to bind the goal to a particular phase of the default lifecycle. To do this, declare the phase to which you want to bind the goal in the execution element:

<plugin>
  <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
  <artifactId>exec-maven-plugin</artifactId>
  <version>1.4</version>
  <executions>
    <execution>
      <id>my-execution</id>
      <phase>package</phase>
      <goals>
        <goal>java</goal>
      </goals>
    </execution>
  </executions>
  <configuration>
    <mainClass>org.dhappy.test.NeoTraverse</mainClass>
  </configuration>
</plugin>

With this example, your class would be executed during the package phase. This is just an example, adapt it to suit your needs. Works also with plugin version 1.1.

Most efficient T-SQL way to pad a varchar on the left to a certain length?

I know this isn't adding much to the conversation at this point but I'm running a file generation procedure and its going incredibly slow. I've been using replicate and saw this trim method and figured I'd give it a shot.

You can see in my code where the switch between the two is in addition to the new @padding variable (and the limitation that now exists). I ran my procedure with the function in both states with the same results in execution time. So at least in SQLServer2016, I'm not seeing any difference in efficiency that other found.

Anyways, here's my UDF that I wrote years ago plus the changes today which is much the same as other's other than it has a LEFT/RIGHT param option and some error checking.

CREATE FUNCTION PadStringTrim
(
    @inputStr varchar(500),
    @finalLength int,
    @padChar varchar (1),
    @padSide varchar(1)
)
RETURNS VARCHAR(500)

AS BEGIN
    -- the point of this function is to avoid using replicate which is extremely slow in SQL Server
    -- to get away from this though we now have a limitation of how much padding we can add, so I've settled on a hundred character pad
    DECLARE @padding VARCHAR (100) = 'XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX'
    SET @padding = REPLACE(@padding, 'X', @padChar)

    SET @inputStr = RTRIM(LTRIM(@inputStr))

    IF LEN(@inputStr) > @finalLength
        RETURN '!ERROR!' -- can search for ! in the returned text

    ELSE IF(@finalLength > LEN(@inputStr))
        IF @padSide = 'L'
            SET @inputStr = RIGHT(@padding + @inputStr, @finalLength)
            --SET @inputStr = REPLICATE(@padChar, @finalLength - LEN(@inputStr)) + @inputStr
        ELSE IF @padSide = 'R'
            SET @inputStr = LEFT(@inputStr + @padding, @finalLength)
            --SET @inputStr = @inputStr + REPLICATE(@padChar, @finalLength - LEN(@inputStr))

    -- if LEN(@inputStr) = @finalLength we just return it
    RETURN @inputStr;
END

-- SELECT  dbo.PadStringTrim( tblAccounts.account, 20, '~' , 'R' ) from tblAccounts

php: catch exception and continue execution, is it possible?

Sure, just catch the exception where you want to continue execution...

  try
  {
      SomeOperation();
  }
  catch (SomeException $e)
  {
      // do nothing... php will ignore and continue
  }

Of course this has the problem of silently dropping what could be a very important error. SomeOperation() may fail causing other subtle, difficult to figure out problems, but you would never know if you silently drop the exception.
