How do I find out what version of WordPress is running?

From experience with WordPress 3.8.3:

(1) Login as admin (2) Click on the W menu in the upper left corner (3) Click on menu item "About WordPress".

This will take you to .../wp-admin/about.php

There it will say "Welcome to WordPress 3.8.3"

How to remove all CSS classes using jQuery/JavaScript?

Of course.

$('#item')[0].className = '';
// or
document.getElementById('item').className = '';

How do I filter an array with AngularJS and use a property of the filtered object as the ng-model attribute?

Applying same filter in HTML with multiple columns, just example:

 variable = (array | filter : {Lookup1Id : subject.Lookup1Id, Lookup2Id : subject.Lookup2Id} : true)

LaTeX: Multiple authors in a two-column article

I put together a little test here:

\documentclass[10pt,twocolumn]{article}

\title{Article Title}
\author{
    First Author\\
    Department\\
    school\\
    email@edu
  \and
    Second Author\\
    Department\\
    school\\
    email@edu
    \and
    Third Author\\
    Department\\
    school\\
    email@edu
    \and
    Fourth Author\\
    Department\\
    school\\
    email@edu
}
\date{\today}

\begin{document}

\maketitle

\begin{abstract}
\ldots
\end{abstract}

\section{Introduction}
\ldots

\end{document}

Things to note, the title, author and date fields are declared before \begin{document}. Also, the multicol package is likely unnecessary in this case since you have declared twocolumn in the document class.

This example puts all four authors on the same line, but if your authors have longer names, departments or emails, this might cause it to flow over onto another line. You might be able to change the font sizes around a little bit to make things fit. This could be done by doing something like {\small First Author}. Here's a more detailed article on \LaTeX font sizes:

https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECN/Support/KB/Docs/LaTeXChangingTheFont

To italicize you can use {\it First Name} or \textit{First Name}.

Be careful though, if the document is meant for publication often times journals or conference proceedings have their own formatting guidelines so font size trickery might not be allowed.

How to set limits for axes in ggplot2 R plots?

Basically you have two options

scale_x_continuous(limits = c(-5000, 5000))

or

coord_cartesian(xlim = c(-5000, 5000))

Where the first removes all data points outside the given range and the second only adjusts the visible area. In most cases you would not see the difference, but if you fit anything to the data it would probably change the fitted values.

You can also use the shorthand function xlim (or ylim), which like the first option removes data points outside of the given range:

+ xlim(-5000, 5000)

For more information check the description of coord_cartesian.

The RStudio cheatsheet for ggplot2 makes this quite clear visually. Here is a small section of that cheatsheet:

How to create a Rectangle object in Java using g.fillRect method

Try this:

public void paint (Graphics g) {
    Rectangle r = new Rectangle(xPos,yPos,width,height);
    g.fillRect(r.getX(), r.getY(), r.getWidth(), r.getHeight());
}

[edit]

// With explicit casting
public void paint (Graphics g) {
        Rectangle r = new Rectangle(xPos, yPos, width, height);
        g.fillRect(
           (int)r.getX(),
           (int)r.getY(),
           (int)r.getWidth(),
           (int)r.getHeight()
        );
    }

Not able to launch IE browser using Selenium2 (Webdriver) with Java

Before you start with Internet Explorer and Selenium Webdriver Consider these two important rules.

  • The zoom level :Should be set to default (100%) and
  • The security zone settings : Should be same for all. The security settings should be set according to your organisation permissions.

How to set this?

  • Simply go to Internet explorer, do both the stuffs manually. Thats it. No secret.
  • Do it through your code.

Method 1:

DesiredCapabilities capabilities = DesiredCapabilities.internetExplorer();

    capabilities.setCapability(InternetExplorerDriver.IGNORE_ZOOM_SETTING, true);

    System.setProperty("webdriver.ie.driver","D:\\IEDriverServer_Win32_2.33.0\\IEDriverServer.exe");

    WebDriver driver= new InternetExplorerDriver(capabilities);

    driver.get(baseURl);

    //Identify your elements and go ahead testing...

This will definetly not show any error and browser will open and also will navigate to the URL.

BUT This will not identify any element and hence you can not proceed.

Why? Because we have simly suppressed the error and asked IE to open and get that URL. However Selenium will identify elements only if the browser zoom is 100% ie. default. So the final code would be

Method 2 The robust and full proof way:

DesiredCapabilities capabilities = DesiredCapabilities.internetExplorer();

    capabilities.setCapability(InternetExplorerDriver.IGNORE_ZOOM_SETTING, true);

    System.setProperty("webdriver.ie.driver","D:\\IEDriverServer_Win32_2.33.0\\IEDriverServer.exe");

    WebDriver driver= new InternetExplorerDriver(capabilities);

    driver.get(baseURl);

    driver.findElement(By.tagName("html")).sendKeys(Keys.chord(Keys.CONTROL,"0"));

    //Identify your elements and go ahead testing...

Hope this helps. Do let me know if further information is required.

annotation to make a private method public only for test classes

Or you can extract this method to some strategy object. In this case you can easily test extracted class and don't make method public or some magic with reflection/bytecode.

What is the meaning of prepended double colon "::"?

:: is a operator of defining the namespace.

For example, if you want to use cout without mentioning using namespace std; in your code you write this:

std::cout << "test";

When no namespace is mentioned, that it is said that class belongs to global namespace.

Redirect from a view to another view

It's because your statement does not produce output.

Besides all the warnings of Darin and lazy (they are right); the question still offerst something to learn.

If you want to execute methods that don't directly produce output, you do:

@{ Response.Redirect("~/Account/LogIn?returnUrl=Products");}

This is also true for rendering partials like:

@{ Html.RenderPartial("_MyPartial"); }

iPhone Safari Web App opens links in new window

This is an old question and many of the solutions here are using javascript. Since then, iOS 11.3 has been released and you can now use the scope member. The scope member is a URL like "/" where all paths under that scope will not open a new page.

The scope member is a string that represents the navigation scope of this web application's application context.

Here is my example:

{
  "name": "Test",
  "short_name": "Test",
  "lang": "en-US",
  "start_url": "/",
  "scope": "/",
  ...
}

You can also read more about it here. I also recommend using the generator which will provide this functionality.

If you specify the scope, everything works as expected similar to Android, destinations out of the scope will open in Safari — with a back button (the small one in the status bar) to your PWA.

iOS 8 UITableView separator inset 0 not working

Swift 2.0 Extension

I just wanted to share an extension I made to remove the margins from the tableview cell separators.

extension UITableViewCell {
    func removeMargins() {

        if self.respondsToSelector("setSeparatorInset:") {
            self.separatorInset = UIEdgeInsetsZero
        }

        if self.respondsToSelector("setPreservesSuperviewLayoutMargins:") {
            self.preservesSuperviewLayoutMargins = false
        }

        if self.respondsToSelector("setLayoutMargins:") {
            self.layoutMargins = UIEdgeInsetsZero
        }
    }
}

Used in context:

    let cell = tableView.dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier("Cell", forIndexPath: indexPath) as! CustomCell

    cell.removeMargins()
    return cell

How to convert an entire MySQL database characterset and collation to UTF-8?

Command Line Solution and Exclude Views

I am simply completing @Jasny's answer for others like @Brian and I who have views in our database.

If you have an error like this:

ERROR 1347 (HY000) at line 17: 'dbname.table_name' is not of type 'BASE TABLE'

It's because you probably have views and you need to exclude them. But when trying to exclude them, MySQL returns 2 columns instead of 1.

SHOW FULL TABLES WHERE Table_Type = 'BASE TABLE';
-- table_name1  BASE TABLE
-- table_name2  BASE TABLE

So we have to adapt Jasny's command with awk to extract only the 1st column which contains the table name.

DB="dbname"
(
    echo 'ALTER DATABASE `'"$DB"'` CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;'
    mysql "$DB" -e "SHOW FULL TABLES WHERE Table_Type = 'BASE TABLE'" --batch --skip-column-names \
    | awk '{print $1 }' \
    | xargs -I{} echo 'ALTER TABLE `'{}'` CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;'
) \
| mysql "$DB"

One-liner for simple copy/paste

DB="dbname"; ( echo 'ALTER DATABASE `'"$DB"'` CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;'; mysql "$DB" -e "SHOW FULL TABLES WHERE Table_Type = 'BASE TABLE'" --batch --skip-column-names | awk '{print $1 }' | xargs -I{} echo 'ALTER TABLE `'{}'` CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;' ) | mysql "$DB"

Use jQuery to change a second select list based on the first select list option

I built on sabithpocker's idea and made a more generalized version that lets you control more than one selectbox from a given trigger.

I assigned the selectboxes I wanted to be controlled the classname "switchable," and cloned them all like this:

$j(this).data('options',$j('select.switchable option').clone());

and used a specific naming convention for the switchable selects, which could also translate into classes. In my case, "category" and "issuer" were the select names, and "category_2" and "issuer_1" the class names.

Then I ran an $.each on the select.switchable groups, after making a copy of $(this) for use inside the function:

var that = this;
$j("select.switchable").each(function() {
    var thisname = $j(this).attr('name');
    var theseoptions = $j(that).data('options').filter( '.' + thisname + '_' + id );
    $j(this).html(theseoptions);
});

By using a classname on the ones you want to control, the function will safely ignore other selects elsewhere on the page (such as the last one in the example on Fiddle).

Here's a Fiddle with the complete code:

inserting characters at the start and end of a string

Strings are immutable so you can't insert characters into an existing string. You have to create a new string. You can use string concatenation to do what you want:

yourstring = "L" + yourstring + "LL"

Note that you can also create a string with n Ls by using multiplication:

m = 1
n = 2
yourstring = ("L" * m) + yourstring + ("L" * n)

Jetty: HTTP ERROR: 503/ Service Unavailable

I had the same problem. I solved it by removing the line break from the xml file. I did

<operationBindings>
    <OperationBinding>
        <operationType>update</operationType>
        <operationId>makePdf</operationId>
        <serverObject>
            <className>com.myclass</className>
            <lookupStyle>new</lookupStyle>
        </serverObject>
        <serverMethod>makePdf</serverMethod>
    </OperationBinding>
</operationBindings>

instead of ...

<serverObject>
            <className>com.myclass
</className>
            <lookupStyle>new</lookupStyle>
</serverObject>

Simulate Keypress With jQuery

The keypress event from jQuery is meant to do this sort of work. You can trigger the event by passing a string "keypress" to .trigger(). However to be more specific you can actually pass a jQuery.Event object (specify the type as "keypress") as well and provide any properties you want such as the keycode being the spacebar.

http://docs.jquery.com/Events/trigger#eventdata

Read the above documentation for more details.

submitting a GET form with query string params and hidden params disappear

In HTML5, this is per-spec behaviour.

See http://www.w3.org/TR/2011/WD-html5-20110525/association-of-controls-and-forms.html#form-submission-algorithm

Look at "4.10.22.3 Form submission algorithm", step 17. In the case of a GET form to an http/s URI with a query string:

Let destination be a new URL that is equal to the action except that its <query> component is replaced by query (adding a U+003F QUESTION MARK character (?) if appropriate).

So, your browser will trash the existing "?..." part of your URI and replace it with a new one based on your form.

In HTML 4.01, the spec produces invalid URIs - most browsers didn't actually do this though..

See http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/interact/forms.html#h-17.13.3, step four - the URI will have a ? appended, even if it already contains one.

What is the difference between `git merge` and `git merge --no-ff`?

Graphic answer to this question

Here is a site with a clear explanation and graphical illustration of using git merge --no-ff:

difference between git merge --no-ff and git merge

Until I saw this, I was completely lost with git. Using --no-ff allows someone reviewing history to clearly see the branch you checked out to work on. (that link points to github's "network" visualization tool) And here is another great reference with illustrations. This reference complements the first one nicely with more of a focus on those less acquainted with git.

Basic info for newbs like me

If you are like me, and not a Git-guru, my answer here describes handling the deletion of files from git's tracking without deleting them from the local filesystem, which seems poorly documented but often occurrence. Another newb situation is getting current code, which still manages to elude me.

Example Workflow

I updated a package to my website and had to go back to my notes to see my workflow; I thought it useful to add an example to this answer.

My workflow of git commands:

git checkout -b contact-form
(do your work on "contact-form")
git status
git commit -am "updated form in contact module"
git checkout master
git merge --no-ff contact-form
git branch -d contact-form
git push origin master

Below: actual usage, including explanations.
Note: the output below is snipped; git is quite verbose.

$ git status
# On branch master
# Changed but not updated:
# (use "git add/rm <file>..." to update what will be committed)
# (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory)
#
#       modified:   ecc/Desktop.php
#       modified:   ecc/Mobile.php
#       deleted:    ecc/ecc-config.php
#       modified:   ecc/readme.txt
#       modified:   ecc/test.php
#       deleted:    passthru-adapter.igs
#       deleted:    shop/mickey/index.php
#
# Untracked files:
# (use "git add <file>..." to include in what will be committed)
#
#       ecc/upgrade.php
#       ecc/webgility-config.php
#       ecc/webgility-config.php.bak
#       ecc/webgility-magento.php

Notice 3 things from above:
1) In the output you can see the changes from the ECC package's upgrade, including the addition of new files.
2) Also notice there are two files (not in the /ecc folder) I deleted independent of this change. Instead of confusing those file deletions with ecc, I'll make a different cleanup branch later to reflect those files' deletion.
3) I didn't follow my workflow! I forgot about git while I was trying to get ecc working again.

Below: rather than do the all-inclusive git commit -am "updated ecc package" I normally would, I only wanted to add the files in the /ecc folder. Those deleted files weren't specifically part of my git add, but because they already were tracked in git, I need to remove them from this branch's commit:

$ git checkout -b ecc
$ git add ecc/*
$ git reset HEAD passthru-adapter.igs
$ git reset HEAD shop/mickey/index.php
Unstaged changes after reset:
M       passthru-adapter.igs
M       shop/mickey/index.php

$ git commit -m "Webgility ecc desktop connector files; integrates with Quickbooks"

$ git checkout master
D       passthru-adapter.igs
D       shop/mickey/index.php
Switched to branch 'master'
$ git merge --no-ff ecc
$ git branch -d ecc
Deleted branch ecc (was 98269a2).
$ git push origin master

Script for automating the above

Having used this process 10+ times in a day, I have taken to writing batch scripts to execute the commands, so I made an almost-proper git_update.sh <branch> <"commit message"> script for doing the above steps. Here is the Gist source for that script.

Instead of git commit -am I am selecting files from the "modified" list produced via git status and then pasting those in this script. This came about because I made dozens of edits but wanted varied branch names to help group the changes.

How to set timer in android?

You can also use an animator for it:

int secondsToRun = 999;

ValueAnimator timer = ValueAnimator.ofInt(secondsToRun);
timer.setDuration(secondsToRun * 1000).setInterpolator(new LinearInterpolator());
timer.addUpdateListener(new ValueAnimator.AnimatorUpdateListener()
    {
        @Override
        public void onAnimationUpdate(ValueAnimator animation)
        {
            int elapsedSeconds = (int) animation.getAnimatedValue();
            int minutes = elapsedSeconds / 60;
            int seconds = elapsedSeconds % 60;

            textView.setText(String.format("%d:%02d", minutes, seconds));
        }
    });
timer.start();

Java Timer vs ExecutorService?

According to Java Concurrency in Practice:

  • Timer can be sensitive to changes in the system clock, ScheduledThreadPoolExecutor isn't.
  • Timer has only one execution thread, so long-running task can delay other tasks. ScheduledThreadPoolExecutor can be configured with any number of threads. Furthermore, you have full control over created threads, if you want (by providing ThreadFactory).
  • Runtime exceptions thrown in TimerTask kill that one thread, thus making Timer dead :-( ... i.e. scheduled tasks will not run anymore. ScheduledThreadExecutor not only catches runtime exceptions, but it lets you handle them if you want (by overriding afterExecute method from ThreadPoolExecutor). Task which threw exception will be canceled, but other tasks will continue to run.

If you can use ScheduledThreadExecutor instead of Timer, do so.

One more thing... while ScheduledThreadExecutor isn't available in Java 1.4 library, there is a Backport of JSR 166 (java.util.concurrent) to Java 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, which has the ScheduledThreadExecutor class.

PHP CSV string to array

You should use fgetcsv. Since you cannot import a file as a stream because the csv is a variable, then you should spoof the string as a file by using php://temp or php://memory first:

$fp = fopen("php://temp", 'r+');
fputs($fp, $csvText);
rewind($fp);

Then you will have no problem using fgetcsv:

$csv = [];
while ( ($data = fgetcsv($fp) ) !== FALSE ) {
    $csv[] = $data;
}

$data will be an array of a single csv line (which may include line breaks or commas, etc), as it should be.

Caveat: The memory limit of php://temp can be controlled by appending /maxmemory:NN, where NN is the maximum amount of data to keep in memory before using a temporary file, in bytes. (the default is 2 MB) http://www.php.net/manual/en/wrappers.php.php

How to play ringtone/alarm sound in Android

This is the way I've done:

Uri notification = RingtoneManager.getDefaultUri(RingtoneManager.TYPE_NOTIFICATION);
MediaPlayer mp = MediaPlayer.create(getApplicationContext(), notification);
mp.start();

It is similar to markov00's way, but uses MediaPlayer instead of Ringtone which prevents interrupting other sounds, like music, that might already be playing in the background.

How to set default values for Angular 2 component properties?

That is interesting subject. You can play around with two lifecycle hooks to figure out how it works: ngOnChanges and ngOnInit.

Basically when you set default value to Input that's mean it will be used only in case there will be no value coming on that component. And the interesting part it will be changed before component will be initialized.

Let's say we have such components with two lifecycle hooks and one property coming from input.

@Component({
  selector: 'cmp',
})
export class Login implements OnChanges, OnInit {
  @Input() property: string = 'default';

  ngOnChanges(changes) {
    console.log('Changed', changes.property.currentValue, changes.property.previousValue);
  }

  ngOnInit() {
    console.log('Init', this.property);
  }

}

Situation 1

Component included in html without defined property value

As result we will see in console: Init default

That's mean onChange was not triggered. Init was triggered and property value is default as expected.

Situation 2

Component included in html with setted property <cmp [property]="'new value'"></cmp>

As result we will see in console:

Changed new value Object {}

Init new value

And this one is interesting. Firstly was triggered onChange hook, which setted property to new value, and previous value was empty object! And only after that onInit hook was triggered with new value of property.

How to find all the subclasses of a class given its name?

This isn't as good an answer as using the special built-in __subclasses__() class method which @unutbu mentions, so I present it merely as an exercise. The subclasses() function defined returns a dictionary which maps all the subclass names to the subclasses themselves.

def traced_subclass(baseclass):
    class _SubclassTracer(type):
        def __new__(cls, classname, bases, classdict):
            obj = type(classname, bases, classdict)
            if baseclass in bases: # sanity check
                attrname = '_%s__derived' % baseclass.__name__
                derived = getattr(baseclass, attrname, {})
                derived.update( {classname:obj} )
                setattr(baseclass, attrname, derived)
             return obj
    return _SubclassTracer

def subclasses(baseclass):
    attrname = '_%s__derived' % baseclass.__name__
    return getattr(baseclass, attrname, None)

class BaseClass(object):
    pass

class SubclassA(BaseClass):
    __metaclass__ = traced_subclass(BaseClass)

class SubclassB(BaseClass):
    __metaclass__ = traced_subclass(BaseClass)

print subclasses(BaseClass)

Output:

What does 'index 0 is out of bounds for axis 0 with size 0' mean?

Essentially it means you don't have the index you are trying to reference. For example:

df = pd.DataFrame()
df['this']=np.nan
df['my']=np.nan
df['data']=np.nan
df['data'][0]=5 #I haven't yet assigned how long df[data] should be!
print(df)

will give me the error you are referring to, because I haven't told Pandas how long my dataframe is. Whereas if I do the exact same code but I DO assign an index length, I don't get an error:

df = pd.DataFrame(index=[0,1,2,3,4])
df['this']=np.nan
df['is']=np.nan
df['my']=np.nan
df['data']=np.nan
df['data'][0]=5 #since I've properly labelled my index, I don't run into this problem!
print(df)

Hope that answers your question!

How to fix JSP compiler warning: one JAR was scanned for TLDs yet contained no TLDs?

The warning comes up because Tomcat scans all Jars for TLDs (Tagging Library Definitions).

Step1: To see which JARs are throwing up this warning, insert he following line to tomcat/conf/logging.properties

org.apache.jasper.servlet.TldScanner.level = FINE

Now you should be able to see warnings with a detail of which JARs are causing the intial warning

Step2 Since skipping unneeded JARs during scanning can improve startup time and JSP compilation time, we will skip un-needed JARS in the catalina.properties file. You have two options here -

  1. List all the JARs under the tomcat.util.scan.StandardJarScanFilter.jarsToSkip. But this can get cumbersome if you have a lot jars or if the jars keep changing.
  2. Alternatively, Insert tomcat.util.scan.StandardJarScanFilter.jarsToSkip=* to skip all the jars

You should now not see the above warnings and if you have a considerably large application, it should save you significant time in deploying an application.

Note: Tested in Tomcat8

selecting rows with id from another table

Try this (subquery):

SELECT * FROM terms WHERE id IN
   (SELECT term_id FROM terms_relation WHERE taxonomy = "categ")

Or you can try this (JOIN):

SELECT t.* FROM terms AS t
   INNER JOIN terms_relation AS tr
   ON t.id = tr.term_id AND tr.taxonomy = "categ"

If you want to receive all fields from two tables:

SELECT t.id, t.name, t.slug, tr.description, tr.created_at, tr.updated_at
  FROM terms AS t
   INNER JOIN terms_relation AS tr
   ON t.id = tr.term_id AND tr.taxonomy = "categ"

How to find EOF through fscanf?

If you have integers in your file fscanf returns 1 until integer occurs. For example:

FILE *in = fopen("./task.in", "r");
int length = 0;
int counter;
int sequence;

for ( int i = 0; i < 10; i++ ) {
    counter = fscanf(in, "%d", &sequence);
    if ( counter == 1 ) {
        length += 1;
    }
}

To find out the end of the file with symbols you can use EOF. For example:

char symbol;
FILE *in = fopen("./task.in", "r");

for ( ; fscanf(in, "%c", &symbol) != EOF; ) {
    printf("%c", symbol);
}

Make body have 100% of the browser height

If you want to keep the margins on the body and don't want scroll bars, use the following css:

html { height:100%; }
body { position:absolute; top:0; bottom:0; right:0; left:0; }

Setting body {min-height:100%} will give you scroll bars.

How to make custom error pages work in ASP.NET MVC 4

Building on the answer posted by maxspan, I've put together a minimal sample project on GitHub showing all the working parts.

Basically, we just add an Application_Error method to global.asax.cs to intercept the exception and give us an opportunity to redirect (or more correctly, transfer request) to a custom error page.

    protected void Application_Error(Object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        // See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13905164/how-to-make-custom-error-pages-work-in-asp-net-mvc-4
        // for additional context on use of this technique

        var exception = Server.GetLastError();
        if (exception != null)
        {
            // This would be a good place to log any relevant details about the exception.
            // Since we are going to pass exception information to our error page via querystring,
            // it will only be practical to issue a short message. Further detail would have to be logged somewhere.

            // This will invoke our error page, passing the exception message via querystring parameter
            // Note that we chose to use Server.TransferRequest, which is only supported in IIS 7 and above.
            // As an alternative, Response.Redirect could be used instead.
            // Server.Transfer does not work (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/320439 )
            Server.TransferRequest("~/Error?Message=" + exception.Message);
        }

    }

Error Controller:

/// <summary>
/// This controller exists to provide the error page
/// </summary>
public class ErrorController : Controller
{
    /// <summary>
    /// This action represents the error page
    /// </summary>
    /// <param name="Message">Error message to be displayed (provided via querystring parameter - a design choice)</param>
    /// <returns></returns>
    public ActionResult Index(string Message)
    {
        // We choose to use the ViewBag to communicate the error message to the view
        ViewBag.Message = Message;
        return View();
    }

}

Error page View:

<!DOCTYPE html>

<html>
<head>
    <title>Error</title>
</head>
<body>

    <h2>My Error</h2>
    <p>@ViewBag.Message</p>
</body>
</html>

Nothing else is involved, other than disabling/removing filters.Add(new HandleErrorAttribute()) in FilterConfig.cs

public class FilterConfig
{
    public static void RegisterGlobalFilters(GlobalFilterCollection filters)
    {
        //filters.Add(new HandleErrorAttribute()); // <== disable/remove
    }
}

While very simple to implement, the one drawback I see in this approach is using querystring to deliver exception information to the target error page.

Use JavaScript to place cursor at end of text in text input element

Still the intermediate variable is needed, (see var val=) else the cursor behaves strange, we need it at the end.

<body onload="document.getElementById('userinput').focus();">

<input id="userinput" onfocus="var val=this.value; this.value=''; this.value= val;"
         class=large type="text" size="10" maxlength="50" value="beans" name="myinput">

How to run multiple .BAT files within a .BAT file

If you want to open many batch files at once you can use the call command. However, the call command closes the current bat file and goes to another. If you want to open many at once, you may want to try this:

@echo off
start cmd "call ex1.bat&ex2.bat&ex3.bat"

And so on or repeat start cmd "call..." for however many files. This works for Windows 7, but I am not sure about other systems.

Is there a command to refresh environment variables from the command prompt in Windows?

This works on windows 7: SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\CmdShortcuts

tested by typing echo %PATH% and it worked, fine. also set if you open a new cmd, no need for those pesky reboots any more :)

Can you delete multiple branches in one command with Git?

I made a small function that might be useful based off of the answer provided by @gawi (above).

removeBranchesWithPrefix() {
  git for-each-ref --format="%(refname:short)" refs/heads/$1\* | xargs git branch -d
}

Add that to your .bash_profile and restart your terminal. Then you can call from command-line like this:

removeBranchesWithPrefix somePrefix

Note

I have it currently setup for a soft delete, which means it won't delete the branches unless they've already been merged. If you like to live on the edge, change -d to -D and it will delete everything with the prefix regardless!

Java JTable setting Column Width

With JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_OFF, the table will not change the size of any of the columns for you, so it will take your preferred setting. If it is your goal to have the columns default to your preferred size, except to have the last column fill the rest of the pane, You have the option of using the JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_LAST_COLUMN autoResizeMode, but it might be most effective when used with TableColumn.setMaxWidth() instead of TableColumn.setPreferredWidth() for all but the last column.

Once you are satisfied that AUTO_RESIZE_LAST_COLUMN does in fact work, you can experiment with a combination of TableColumn.setMaxWidth() and TableColumn.setMinWidth()

How to change password using TortoiseSVN?

Replace the line in htpasswd file:

go to: http://www.htaccesstools.com/htpasswd-generator-windows/

(if the link is expired, search another generator from google.com)

Enter your username and password. The site will generate encrypted line. Copy that line and replace it with the previous line in the file "repo/htpasswd".

You might also need to 'clear' the 'Authentication data' from tortoisSVN -> settings -> saved data

How to open an elevated cmd using command line for Windows?

I'm not sure the tool ExecElevated.exe (13KB) will do the job....but it might. Or at least be useful for others with similar needs who came to this page as I did (but I didn't find the solution so I ended up creating the tool myself in .Net).

It will execute an application with elevated token (in admin mode). But you will get an UAC dialog to confirm! (maybe not if UAC has been disabled, haven't tested it).

And the account calling the tool must also have admin. rights of course.

Example of use:

ExecuteElevated.exe "C:\Utility\regjump.exe HKCU\Software\Classes\.pdf"

When does Java's Thread.sleep throw InterruptedException?

Datagrid binding in WPF

try to do this in the behind code

   public diagboxclass()
   {
         List<object> list = new List<object>();
         list = GetObjectList();
         Imported.ItemsSource = null;
         Imported.ItemsSource = list;
   }

Also be sure your list is effectively populated and as mentioned by Blindmeis, never use words that already are given a function in c#.

How to make HTML Text unselectable

I altered the jQuery plugin posted above so it would work on live elements.

(function ($) {
$.fn.disableSelection = function () {
    return this.each(function () {
        if (typeof this.onselectstart != 'undefined') {
            this.onselectstart = function() { return false; };
        } else if (typeof this.style.MozUserSelect != 'undefined') {
            this.style.MozUserSelect = 'none';
        } else {
            this.onmousedown = function() { return false; };
        }
    });
};
})(jQuery);

Then you could so something like:

$(document).ready(function() {
    $('label').disableSelection();

    // Or to make everything unselectable
    $('*').disableSelection();
});

Batch file to delete folders older than 10 days in Windows 7

FORFILES /S /D -10 /C "cmd /c IF @isdir == TRUE rd /S /Q @path"

I could not get Blorgbeard's suggestion to work, but I was able to get it to work with RMDIR instead of RD:

FORFILES /p N:\test /S /D -10 /C "cmd /c IF @isdir == TRUE RMDIR /S /Q @path"

Since RMDIR won't delete folders that aren't empty so I also ended up using this code to delete the files that were over 10 days and then the folders that were over 10 days old.

FOR /d %%K in ("n:\test*") DO (

FOR /d %%J in ("%%K*") DO (

FORFILES /P %%J /S /M . /D -10 /C "cmd /c del @file"

)

)

FORFILES /p N:\test /S /D -10 /C "cmd /c IF @isdir == TRUE RMDIR /S /Q @path"

I used this code to purge out the sub folders in the folders within test (example n:\test\abc\123 would get purged when empty, but n:\test\abc would not get purged

Javascript require() function giving ReferenceError: require is not defined

require is part of the Asynchronous Module Definition (AMD) API.

A browser implementation can be found via require.js and native support can be found in node.js.

The documentation for the library you are using should tell you what you need to use it, I suspect that it is intended to run under Node.js and not in browsers.

How to get value from form field in django framework?

Using a form in a view pretty much explains it.

The standard pattern for processing a form in a view looks like this:

def contact(request):
    if request.method == 'POST': # If the form has been submitted...
        form = ContactForm(request.POST) # A form bound to the POST data
        if form.is_valid(): # All validation rules pass
            # Process the data in form.cleaned_data
            # ...

            print form.cleaned_data['my_form_field_name']

            return HttpResponseRedirect('/thanks/') # Redirect after POST
    else:
        form = ContactForm() # An unbound form

    return render_to_response('contact.html', {

How to get an enum value from a string value in Java?

Here's a nifty utility I use:

/**
 * A common method for all enums since they can't have another base class
 * @param <T> Enum type
 * @param c enum type. All enums must be all caps.
 * @param string case insensitive
 * @return corresponding enum, or null
 */
public static <T extends Enum<T>> T getEnumFromString(Class<T> c, String string) {
    if( c != null && string != null ) {
        try {
            return Enum.valueOf(c, string.trim().toUpperCase());
        } catch(IllegalArgumentException ex) {
        }
    }
    return null;
}

Then in my enum class I usually have this to save some typing:

public static MyEnum fromString(String name) {
    return getEnumFromString(MyEnum.class, name);
}

If your enums are not all caps, just change the Enum.valueOf line.

Too bad I can't use T.class for Enum.valueOf as T is erased.

How to put a List<class> into a JSONObject and then read that object?

You could use a JSON serializer/deserializer like flexjson to do the conversion for you.

WPF MVVM: How to close a window

Simple approach is close window on saveComand Implementation. Use below code to close window.

Application.Current.Windows[1].Close();

It will close the child window.

Uploading files to file server using webclient class

when you manually open the IP address (via the RUN command or mapping a network drive), your PC will send your credentials over the pipe and the file server will receive authorization from the DC.

When ASP.Net tries, then it is going to try to use the IIS worker user (unless impersonation is turned on which will list a few other issues). Traditionally, the IIS worker user does not have authorization to work across servers (or even in other folders on the web server).

How to add a button to UINavigationBar?

Sample code to set the rightbutton on a NavigationBar.

UIBarButtonItem *rightButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"Done"
    style:UIBarButtonItemStyleDone target:nil action:nil];
UINavigationItem *item = [[UINavigationItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"Title"];
item.rightBarButtonItem = rightButton;
item.hidesBackButton = YES;
[bar pushNavigationItem:item animated:NO];

But normally you would have a NavigationController, enabling you to write:

UIBarButtonItem *rightButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"Done"
    style:UIBarButtonItemStyleDone target:nil action:nil];
self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = rightButton;

Python Request Post with param data

params is for GET-style URL parameters, data is for POST-style body information. It is perfectly legal to provide both types of information in a request, and your request does so too, but you encoded the URL parameters into the URL already.

Your raw post contains JSON data though. requests can handle JSON encoding for you, and it'll set the correct Content-Type header too; all you need to do is pass in the Python object to be encoded as JSON into the json keyword argument.

You could split out the URL parameters as well:

params = {'sessionKey': '9ebbd0b25760557393a43064a92bae539d962103', 'format': 'xml', 'platformId': 1}

then post your data with:

import requests

url = 'http://192.168.3.45:8080/api/v2/event/log'

data = {"eventType": "AAS_PORTAL_START", "data": {"uid": "hfe3hf45huf33545", "aid": "1", "vid": "1"}}
params = {'sessionKey': '9ebbd0b25760557393a43064a92bae539d962103', 'format': 'xml', 'platformId': 1}

requests.post(url, params=params, json=data)

The json keyword is new in requests version 2.4.2; if you still have to use an older version, encode the JSON manually using the json module and post the encoded result as the data key; you will have to explicitly set the Content-Type header in that case:

import requests
import json

headers = {'content-type': 'application/json'}
url = 'http://192.168.3.45:8080/api/v2/event/log'

data = {"eventType": "AAS_PORTAL_START", "data": {"uid": "hfe3hf45huf33545", "aid": "1", "vid": "1"}}
params = {'sessionKey': '9ebbd0b25760557393a43064a92bae539d962103', 'format': 'xml', 'platformId': 1}

requests.post(url, params=params, data=json.dumps(data), headers=headers)

What is the difference between typeof and instanceof and when should one be used vs. the other?

When checking for a function, one must always use typeof.

Here's the difference:

var f = Object.create(Function);

console.log(f instanceof Function); //=> true
console.log(typeof f === 'function'); //=> false

f(); // throws TypeError: f is not a function

This is why one must never use instanceof to check for a function.

In Java how does one turn a String into a char or a char into a String?

String g = "line";
//string to char
char c = g.charAt(0);
char[] c_arr = g.toCharArray();
//char to string
char[] charArray = {'a', 'b', 'c'};
String str = String.valueOf(charArray);
//(or iterate the charArray and append each character to str -> str+=charArray[i])

//or String s= new String(chararray);

Write Array to Excel Range

For some reason, converting to a 2 dimensional array didn't work for me. But the following approach did:

public void SetRow(Range range, string[] data)
{
    range.get_Resize(1, data.Length).Value2 = data;
}

std::string formatting like sprintf

One solution I've favoured is to do this with sprintf directly into the std::string buffer, after making said buffer big enough:

#include <string>
#include <iostream>

using namespace std;

string l_output;
l_output.resize(100);

for (int i = 0; i < 1000; ++i)
{
    memset (&l_output[0], 0, 100);
    sprintf (&l_output[0], "\r%i\0", i);

    cout << l_output;
    cout.flush();
}

So, create the std::string, resize it, access its buffer directly...

Is iterating ConcurrentHashMap values thread safe?

This might give you a good insight

ConcurrentHashMap achieves higher concurrency by slightly relaxing the promises it makes to callers. A retrieval operation will return the value inserted by the most recent completed insert operation, and may also return a value added by an insertion operation that is concurrently in progress (but in no case will it return a nonsense result). Iterators returned by ConcurrentHashMap.iterator() will return each element once at most and will not ever throw ConcurrentModificationException, but may or may not reflect insertions or removals that occurred since the iterator was constructed. No table-wide locking is needed (or even possible) to provide thread-safety when iterating the collection. ConcurrentHashMap may be used as a replacement for synchronizedMap or Hashtable in any application that does not rely on the ability to lock the entire table to prevent updates.

Regarding this:

However, iterators are designed to be used by only one thread at a time.

It means, while using iterators produced by ConcurrentHashMap in two threads are safe, it may cause an unexpected result in the application.

XOR operation with two strings in java

Note: this only works for low characters i.e. below 0x8000, This works for all ASCII characters.

I would do an XOR each charAt() to create a new String. Like

String s, key;

StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
for(int i = 0; i < s.length(); i++)
    sb.append((char)(s.charAt(i) ^ key.charAt(i % key.length())));
String result = sb.toString();

In response to @user467257's comment

If your input/output is utf-8 and you xor "a" and "æ", you are left with an invalid utf-8 string consisting of one character (decimal 135, a continuation character).

It is the char values which are being xor'ed, but the byte values and this produces a character whichc an be UTF-8 encoded.

public static void main(String... args) throws UnsupportedEncodingException {
    char ch1 = 'a';
    char ch2 = 'æ';
    char ch3 = (char) (ch1 ^ ch2);
    System.out.println((int) ch3 + " UTF-8 encoded is " + Arrays.toString(String.valueOf(ch3).getBytes("UTF-8")));
}

prints

135 UTF-8 encoded is [-62, -121]

LEFT OUTER JOIN in LINQ

Easy way is to use Let keyword. This works for me.

from AItem in Db.A
Let BItem = Db.B.Where(x => x.id == AItem.id ).FirstOrDefault()
Where SomeCondition
Select new YourViewModel
{
    X1 = AItem.a,
    X2 = AItem.b,
    X3 = BItem.c
}

This is a simulation of Left Join. If each item in B table not match to A item , BItem return null

Converting byte array to string in javascript

Too late to answer but if your input is in form of ASCII bytes, then you could try this solution:

function convertArrToString(rArr){
 //Step 1: Convert each element to character
 let tmpArr = new Array();
 rArr.forEach(function(element,index){
    tmpArr.push(String.fromCharCode(element));
});
//Step 2: Return the string by joining the elements
return(tmpArr.join(""));
}

function convertArrToHexNumber(rArr){
  return(parseInt(convertArrToString(rArr),16));
}

How to generate UML diagrams (especially sequence diagrams) from Java code?

You could also give the netbeans UML modeller a try. I have used it to generate javacode that I used in my eclipse projects. You can even import eclipse projects in netbeans and keep the eclipse settings synced with the netbeans project settings.

I tried several UML modellers for eclipse and wasn't satisfied with them. They were either unstable, complicated or just plain ugly. ;-)

Nodejs convert string into UTF-8

I had the same problem, when i loaded a text file via fs.readFile(), I tried to set the encodeing to UTF8, it keeped the same. my solution now is this:

myString = JSON.parse( JSON.stringify( myString ) )

after this an Ö is realy interpreted as an Ö.

Python: download a file from an FTP server

requests library doesn't support ftp links.

To download a file from FTP server you could:

import urllib

urllib.urlretrieve('ftp://server/path/to/file', 'file')
# if you need to pass credentials:
#   urllib.urlretrieve('ftp://username:password@server/path/to/file', 'file')

Or:

import shutil
import urllib2
from contextlib import closing

with closing(urllib2.urlopen('ftp://server/path/to/file')) as r:
    with open('file', 'wb') as f:
        shutil.copyfileobj(r, f)

Python3:

import shutil
import urllib.request as request
from contextlib import closing

with closing(request.urlopen('ftp://server/path/to/file')) as r:
    with open('file', 'wb') as f:
        shutil.copyfileobj(r, f)

Good NumericUpDown equivalent in WPF?

A control that is missing from the original set of WPF controls, but much used, is the NumericUpDown control. It is a neat way to get users to select a number from a fixed range, in a small area. A slider could be used, but for compact forms with little horizontal real-estate, the NumericUpDown is essential.

Solution A (via WindowsFormsHost)

You can use the Windows Forms NumericUpDown control in WPF by hosting it in a WindowsFormsHost. Pay attention that you have to include a reference to System.Windows.Forms.dll assembly.

<Window x:Class="WpfApplication61.MainWindow"
        xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
        xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
        xmlns:wf="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Forms;assembly=System.Windows.Forms"
        Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525">
    <StackPanel>
        <WindowsFormsHost>
            <wf:NumericUpDown/>
        </WindowsFormsHost>
...

Solution B (custom)

There are several commercial and codeplex versions around, but both involve installing 3rd party dlls and overheads to your project. Far simpler to build your own, and a aimple way to do that is with the ScrollBar.

A vertical ScrollBar with no Thumb (just the repeater buttons) is in fact just what we want. It inherits rom RangeBase, so it has all the properties we need, like Min, Max, and SmallChange (set to 1, to restrict it to Integer values)

So we change the ScrollBar ControlTemplate. First we remove the Thumb and Horizontal trigger actions. Then we group the remains into a grid and add a TextBlock for the number:

<Grid Margin="2">
    <Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
        <ColumnDefinition/>
        <ColumnDefinition />
    </Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
    <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" FontSize="20" MinWidth="25" Text="{Binding Value, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}"/>
    <Grid Grid.Column="1" x:Name="GridRoot" Width="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemParameters.VerticalScrollBarWidthKey}}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}">
        <Grid.RowDefinitions>
            <RowDefinition MaxHeight="18"/>
            <RowDefinition Height="0.00001*"/>
            <RowDefinition MaxHeight="18"/>
        </Grid.RowDefinitions>
        <RepeatButton x:Name="DecreaseRepeat" Command="ScrollBar.LineDownCommand" Focusable="False">
            <Grid>
                <Path x:Name="DecreaseArrow" Stroke="{TemplateBinding Foreground}" StrokeThickness="1" Data="M 0 4 L 8 4 L 4 0 Z"/>
            </Grid>
        </RepeatButton>
        <RepeatButton Grid.Row="2" x:Name="IncreaseRepeat" Command="ScrollBar.LineUpCommand" Focusable="False">
            <Grid>
                <Path x:Name="IncreaseArrow" Stroke="{TemplateBinding Foreground}" StrokeThickness="1" Data="M 0 0 L 4 4 L 8 0 Z"/>
            </Grid>
        </RepeatButton>
    </Grid>
</Grid>

Image convert to Base64

Exactly what you need:) You can choose callback version or Promise version. Note that promises will work in IE only with Promise polyfill lib.You can put this code once on a page, and this function will appear in all your files.

The loadend event is fired when progress has stopped on the loading of a resource (e.g. after "error", "abort", or "load" have been dispatched)

Callback version

        File.prototype.convertToBase64 = function(callback){
                var reader = new FileReader();
                reader.onloadend = function (e) {
                    callback(e.target.result, e.target.error);
                };
                reader.readAsDataURL(this);
        };

        $("#asd").on('change',function(){
          var selectedFile = this.files[0];
          selectedFile.convertToBase64(function(base64){
               alert(base64);
          })
        });

Promise version

    File.prototype.convertToBase64 = function(){
         return new Promise(function(resolve, reject) {
                var reader = new FileReader();
                reader.onloadend = function (e) {
                    resolve({
                      fileName: this.name,
                      result: e.target.result,
                      error: e.target.error
                    });
                };
                reader.readAsDataURL(this);
        }.bind(this));
    };

    FileList.prototype.convertAllToBase64 = function(regexp){
      // empty regexp if not set
      regexp = regexp || /.*/;
      //making array from FileList
      var filesArray = Array.prototype.slice.call(this);
      var base64PromisesArray = filesArray.
           filter(function(file){
             return (regexp).test(file.name)
           }).map(function(file){
             return file.convertToBase64();
           });
      return Promise.all(base64PromisesArray);

      this.files.convertAllToBase64(/\.(png|jpeg|jpg|gif)$/i).then(function(objArray){
            objArray.forEach(function(obj, i){

Difference between string and StringBuilder in C#

String

A String instance is immutable, that is, we cannot change it after it was created. If we perform any operation on a String it will return a new instance (creates a new instance in memory) instead of modifying the existing instance value.

StringBuilder

StringBuilder is mutable, that is, if we perform any operation on StringBuilder it will update the existing instance value and it will not create new instance.

Binary numbers in Python

Below is a re-write of a previously posted function:

def addBinary(a, b): # Example: a = '11' + b =' 100' returns as '111'.
    for ch in a: assert ch in {'0','1'}, 'bad digit: ' + ch
    for ch in b: assert ch in {'0','1'}, 'bad digit: ' + ch
    sumx = int(a, 2) + int(b, 2)
    return bin(sumx)[2:]

what is <meta charset="utf-8">?

The characters you are reading on your screen now each have a numerical value. In the ASCII format, for example, the letter 'A' is 65, 'B' is 66, and so on. If you look at a table of characters available in ASCII you will see that it isn't much use for someone who wishes to write something in Mandarin, Arabic, or Japanese. For characters / words from those languages to be displayed we needed another system of encoding them to and from numbers stored in computer memory.

UTF-8 is just one of the encoding methods that were invented to implement this requirement. It lets you write text in all kinds of languages, so French accents will appear perfectly fine, as will text like this

???? ????? (Bzia zbasa), ???????, Ç'kemi, ???, and even right-to-left writing such as this ?????? ?????

If you copy and paste the above text into notepad and then try to save the file as ANSI (another format) you will receive a warning that saving in this format will lose some of the formatting. Accept it, then re-load the text file and you'll see something like this

???? ????? (Bzia zbasa), ???????, Ç'kemi, ???, and even right-to-left writing such as this ?????? ?????

What is the equivalent of Java's final in C#?

http://en.csharp-online.net/CSharp_FAQ:_What_are_the_differences_between_CSharp_and_Java_constant_declarations

C# constants are declared using the const keyword for compile time constants or the readonly keyword for runtime constants. The semantics of constants is the same in both the C# and Java languages.

Check if argparse optional argument is set or not

Here is my solution to see if I am using an argparse variable

import argparse

ap = argparse.ArgumentParser()
ap.add_argument("-1", "--first", required=True)
ap.add_argument("-2", "--second", required=True)
ap.add_argument("-3", "--third", required=False)
# Combine all arguments into a list called args
args = vars(ap.parse_args())
if args["third"] is not None:
# do something

This might give more insight to the above answer which I used and adapted to work for my program.

Reducing MongoDB database file size

mongoDB -repair is not recommended in case of sharded cluster.

If using replica set sharded cluster, use compact command, it will rewrites and defragments all data and index files of all collections. syntax:

db.runCommand( { compact : "collection_name" } )

when used with force:true, compact runs on primary of replica set. e.g. db.runCommand ( { command : "collection_name", force : true } )

Other points to consider: -It blocks the operations. so recommended to execute in maintenance window. -If replica sets running on different servers, needs to be execute on each member separately - In case of sharded cluster, compact needs to execute on each shard member separately. Cannot execute against mongos instance.

Python virtualenv questions

Yes basically this is what virtualenv do , and this is what the activate command is for, from the doc here:

activate script

In a newly created virtualenv there will be a bin/activate shell script, or a Scripts/activate.bat batch file on Windows.

This will change your $PATH to point to the virtualenv bin/ directory. Unlike workingenv, this is all it does; it's a convenience. But if you use the complete path like /path/to/env/bin/python script.py you do not need to activate the environment first. You have to use source because it changes the environment in-place. After activating an environment you can use the function deactivate to undo the changes.

The activate script will also modify your shell prompt to indicate which environment is currently active.

so you should just use activate command which will do all that for you:

> \path\to\env\bin\activate.bat

Entity Framework rollback and remove bad migration

For EF 6 here's a one-liner if you're re-scaffolding a lot in development. Just update the vars and then keep using the up arrow in package manager console to rinse and repeat.

$lastGoodTarget = "OldTargetName"; $newTarget = "NewTargetName"; Update-Database -TargetMigration "$lastGoodTarget" -Verbose; Add-Migration "$newTarget" -Verbose -Force

Why is this necessary you ask? Not sure which versions of EF6 this applies but if your new migration target has already been applied then using '-Force' to re-scaffold in Add-Migration will not actually re-scaffold, but instead make a new file (this is a good thing though because you wouldn't want to lose your 'Down'). The above snippet does the 'Down' first if necessary then -Force works properly to re-scaffold.

How do I list one filename per output line in Linux?

Create excel ranges using column numbers in vba?

I really like stackPusher's ConvertToLetter function as a solution. However, in working with it I noticed several errors occurring at very specific inputs due to some flaws in the math. For example, inputting 392 returns 'N\', 418 returns 'O\', 444 returns 'P\', etc.

I reworked the function and the result produces the correct output for all input up to 703 (which is the first triple-letter column index, AAA).

Function ConvertToLetter2(iCol As Integer) As String
    Dim First As Integer
    Dim Second As Integer
    Dim FirstChar As String
    Dim SecondChar As String

    First = Int(iCol / 26)
    If First = iCol / 26 Then
        First = First - 1
    End If
    If First = 0 Then
        FirstChar = ""
    Else
        FirstChar = Chr(First + 64)
    End If

    Second = iCol Mod 26
    If Second = 0 Then
        SecondChar = Chr(26 + 64)
    Else
        SecondChar = Chr(Second + 64)
    End If

    ConvertToLetter2 = FirstChar & SecondChar

End Function

Solving Quadratic Equation

Below is the Program to Solve Quadratic Equation.

For Example: Solve x2 + 3x – 4 = 0

This quadratic happens to factor:

x2 + 3x – 4 = (x + 4)(x – 1) = 0

we already know that the solutions are x = –4 and x = 1.

enter image description here

    # import complex math module
    import cmath

    a = 1
    b = 5
    c = 6

    # To take coefficient input from the users
    # a = float(input('Enter a: '))
    # b = float(input('Enter b: '))
    # c = float(input('Enter c: '))

    # calculate the discriminant
    d = (b**2) - (4*a*c)

    # find two solutions
    sol1 = (-b-cmath.sqrt(d))/(2*a)
    sol2 = (-b+cmath.sqrt(d))/(2*a)

    print('The solution are {0} and {1}'.format(sol1,sol2))

Implementing i18n Without The Performance Hit Using a Pre-Processor as suggested by Thomas Bley

At work, we recently went through implementation of i18n on a couple of our properties, and one of the things we kept struggling with was the performance hit of dealing with on-the-fly translation, then I discovered this great blog post by Thomas Bley which inspired the way we're using i18n to handle large traffic loads with minimal performance issues.

Instead of calling functions for every translation operation, which as we know in PHP is expensive, we define our base files with placeholders, then use a pre-processor to cache those files (we store the file modification time to make sure we're serving the latest content at all times).

The Translation Tags

Thomas uses {tr} and {/tr} tags to define where translations start and end. Due to the fact that we're using TWIG, we don't want to use { to avoid confusion so we use [%tr%] and [%/tr%] instead. Basically, this looks like this:

`return [%tr%]formatted_value[%/tr%];`

Note that Thomas suggests using the base English in the file. We don't do this because we don't want to have to modify all of the translation files if we change the value in English.

The INI Files

Then, we create an INI file for each language, in the format placeholder = translated:

// lang/fr.ini
formatted_value = number_format($value * Model_Exchange::getEurRate(), 2, ',', ' ') . '€'

// lang/en_gb.ini
formatted_value = '£' . number_format($value * Model_Exchange::getStgRate())

// lang/en_us.ini
formatted_value = '$' . number_format($value)

It would be trivial to allow a user to modify these inside the CMS, just get the keypairs by a preg_split on \n or = and making the CMS able to write to the INI files.

The Pre-Processor Component

Essentially, Thomas suggests using a just-in-time 'compiler' (though, in truth, it's a preprocessor) function like this to take your translation files and create static PHP files on disk. This way, we essentially cache our translated files instead of calling a translation function for every string in the file:

// This function was written by Thomas Bley, not by me
function translate($file) {
  $cache_file = 'cache/'.LANG.'_'.basename($file).'_'.filemtime($file).'.php';
  // (re)build translation?
  if (!file_exists($cache_file)) {
    $lang_file = 'lang/'.LANG.'.ini';
    $lang_file_php = 'cache/'.LANG.'_'.filemtime($lang_file).'.php';

    // convert .ini file into .php file
    if (!file_exists($lang_file_php)) {
      file_put_contents($lang_file_php, '<?php $strings='.
        var_export(parse_ini_file($lang_file), true).';', LOCK_EX);
    }
    // translate .php into localized .php file
    $tr = function($match) use (&$lang_file_php) {
      static $strings = null;
      if ($strings===null) require($lang_file_php);
      return isset($strings[ $match[1] ]) ? $strings[ $match[1] ] : $match[1];
    };
    // replace all {t}abc{/t} by tr()
    file_put_contents($cache_file, preg_replace_callback(
      '/\[%tr%\](.*?)\[%\/tr%\]/', $tr, file_get_contents($file)), LOCK_EX);
  }
  return $cache_file;
}

Note: I didn't verify that the regex works, I didn't copy it from our company server, but you can see how the operation works.

How to Call It

Again, this example is from Thomas Bley, not from me:

// instead of
require("core/example.php");
echo (new example())->now();

// we write
define('LANG', 'en_us');
require(translate('core/example.php'));
echo (new example())->now();

We store the language in a cookie (or session variable if we can't get a cookie) and then retrieve it on every request. You could combine this with an optional $_GET parameter to override the language, but I don't suggest subdomain-per-language or page-per-language because it'll make it harder to see which pages are popular and will reduce the value of inbound links as you'll have them more scarcely spread.

Why use this method?

We like this method of preprocessing for three reasons:

  1. The huge performance gain from not calling a whole bunch of functions for content which rarely changes (with this system, 100k visitors in French will still only end up running translation replacement once).
  2. It doesn't add any load to our database, as it uses simple flat-files and is a pure-PHP solution.
  3. The ability to use PHP expressions within our translations.

Getting Translated Database Content

We just add a column for content in our database called language, then we use an accessor method for the LANG constant which we defined earlier on, so our SQL calls (using ZF1, sadly) look like this:

$query = select()->from($this->_name)
                 ->where('language = ?', User::getLang())
                 ->where('id       = ?', $articleId)
                 ->limit(1);

Our articles have a compound primary key over id and language so article 54 can exist in all languages. Our LANG defaults to en_US if not specified.

URL Slug Translation

I'd combine two things here, one is a function in your bootstrap which accepts a $_GET parameter for language and overrides the cookie variable, and another is routing which accepts multiple slugs. Then you can do something like this in your routing:

"/wilkommen" => "/welcome/lang/de"
... etc ...

These could be stored in a flat file which could be easily written to from your admin panel. JSON or XML may provide a good structure for supporting them.

Notes Regarding A Few Other Options

PHP-based On-The-Fly Translation

I can't see that these offer any advantage over pre-processed translations.

Front-end Based Translations

I've long found these interesting, but there are a few caveats. For example, you have to make available to the user the entire list of phrases on your website that you plan to translate, this could be problematic if there are areas of the site you're keeping hidden or haven't allowed them access to.

You'd also have to assume that all of your users are willing and able to use Javascript on your site, but from my statistics, around 2.5% of our users are running without it (or using Noscript to block our sites from using it).

Database-Driven Translations

PHP's database connectivity speeds are nothing to write home about, and this adds to the already high overhead of calling a function on every phrase to translate. The performance & scalability issues seem overwhelming with this approach.

How to get the number of characters in a string

I should point out that none of the answers provided so far give you the number of characters as you would expect, especially when you're dealing with emojis (but also some languages like Thai, Korean, or Arabic). VonC's suggestions will output the following:

fmt.Println(utf8.RuneCountInString("??")) // Outputs "6".
fmt.Println(len([]rune("??"))) // Outputs "6".

That's because these methods only count Unicode code points. There are many characters which can be composed of multiple code points.

Same for using the Normalization package:

var ia norm.Iter
ia.InitString(norm.NFKD, "??")
nc := 0
for !ia.Done() {
    nc = nc + 1
    ia.Next()
}
fmt.Println(nc) // Outputs "6".

Normalization is not really the same as counting characters and many characters cannot be normalized into a one-code-point equivalent.

masakielastic's answer comes close but only handles modifiers (the rainbow flag contains a modifier which is thus not counted as its own code point):

fmt.Println(GraphemeCountInString("??"))  // Outputs "5".
fmt.Println(GraphemeCountInString2("??")) // Outputs "5".

The correct way to split Unicode strings into (user-perceived) characters, i.e. grapheme clusters, is defined in the Unicode Standard Annex #29. The rules can be found in Section 3.1.1. The github.com/rivo/uniseg package implements these rules so you can determine the correct number of characters in a string:

fmt.Println(uniseg.GraphemeClusterCount("??")) // Outputs "2".

How to handle configuration in Go

The JSON format worked for me quite well. The standard library offers methods to write the data structure indented, so it is quite readable.

See also this golang-nuts thread.

The benefits of JSON are that it is fairly simple to parse and human readable/editable while offering semantics for lists and mappings (which can become quite handy), which is not the case with many ini-type config parsers.

Example usage:

conf.json:

{
    "Users": ["UserA","UserB"],
    "Groups": ["GroupA"]
}

Program to read the configuration

import (
    "encoding/json"
    "os"
    "fmt"
)

type Configuration struct {
    Users    []string
    Groups   []string
}

file, _ := os.Open("conf.json")
defer file.Close()
decoder := json.NewDecoder(file)
configuration := Configuration{}
err := decoder.Decode(&configuration)
if err != nil {
  fmt.Println("error:", err)
}
fmt.Println(configuration.Users) // output: [UserA, UserB]

Should I use .done() and .fail() for new jQuery AJAX code instead of success and error

When we are going to migrate JQuery from 1.x to 2x or 3.x in our old existing application , then we will use .done,.fail instead of success,error as JQuery up gradation is going to be deprecated these methods.For example when we make a call to server web methods then server returns promise objects to the calling methods(Ajax methods) and this promise objects contains .done,.fail..etc methods.Hence we will the same for success and failure response. Below is the example(it is for POST request same way we can construct for request type like GET...)

 $.ajax({
            type: "POST",
            url: url,
            data: '{"name" :"sheo"}',
            contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
            async: false,
            cache: false
            }).done(function (Response) {
                  //do something when get response })
           .fail(function (Response) {
                    //do something when any error occurs.
                });

How to force garbage collector to run?

System.GC.Collect() forces garbage collector to run. This is not recommended but can be used if situations arise.

What is the difference between json.dumps and json.load?

dumps takes an object and produces a string:

>>> a = {'foo': 3}
>>> json.dumps(a)
'{"foo": 3}'

load would take a file-like object, read the data from that object, and use that string to create an object:

with open('file.json') as fh:
    a = json.load(fh)

Note that dump and load convert between files and objects, while dumps and loads convert between strings and objects. You can think of the s-less functions as wrappers around the s functions:

def dump(obj, fh):
    fh.write(dumps(obj))

def load(fh):
    return loads(fh.read())

How to efficiently use try...catch blocks in PHP

There is no reason against using a single block for multiple operations, since any thrown exception will prevent the execution of further operations after the failed one. At least as long as you can conclude which operation failed from the exception caught. That is as long as it is fine if some operations are not processed.

However I'd say that returning the exception makes only limited sense. A return value of a function should be the expected result of some action, not the exception. If you need to react on the exception in the calling scope then either do not catch the exception here inside your function, but in the calling scope or re-throw the exception for later processing after having done some debug logging and the like.

Unit testing void methods?

Test its side-effects. This includes:

  • Does it throw any exceptions? (If it should, check that it does. If it shouldn't, try some corner cases which might if you're not careful - null arguments being the most obvious thing.)
  • Does it play nicely with its parameters? (If they're mutable, does it mutate them when it shouldn't and vice versa?)
  • Does it have the right effect on the state of the object/type you're calling it on?

Of course, there's a limit to how much you can test. You generally can't test with every possible input, for example. Test pragmatically - enough to give you confidence that your code is designed appropriately and implemented correctly, and enough to act as supplemental documentation for what a caller might expect.

Maven home (M2_HOME) not being picked up by IntelliJ IDEA

Got to this answer ? probably the answers above are to long ...

just type in :

echo "setenv M2_HOME $M2_HOME" | sudo tee -a /etc/launchd.conf

and restart your mac (thats it!)

restarting is annoying ? just use the command :

grep -E "^setenv" /etc/launchd.conf | xargs -t -L 1 launchctl

and restart IntelliJ IDEA

SSL certificate is not trusted - on mobile only

The most likely reason for the error is that the certificate authority that issued your SSL certificate is trusted on your desktop, but not on your mobile.

If you purchased the certificate from a common certification authority, it shouldn't be an issue - but if it is a less common one it is possible that your phone doesn't have it. You may need to accept it as a trusted publisher (although this is not ideal if you are pushing the site to the public as they won't be willing to do this.)

You might find looking at a list of Trusted CAs for Android helps to see if yours is there or not.

Difference between Hashing a Password and Encrypting it

Hashing:

It is a one-way algorithm and once hashed can not rollback and this is its sweet point against encryption.

Encryption

If we perform encryption, there will a key to do this. If this key will be leaked all of your passwords could be decrypted easily.

On the other hand, even if your database will be hacked or your server admin took data from DB and you used hashed passwords, the hacker will not able to break these hashed passwords. This would actually practically impossible if we use hashing with proper salt and additional security with PBKDF2.

If you want to take a look at how should you write your hash functions, you can visit here.

There are many algorithms to perform hashing.

  1. MD5 - Uses the Message Digest Algorithm 5 (MD5) hash function. The output hash is 128 bits in length. The MD5 algorithm was designed by Ron Rivest in the early 1990s and is not a preferred option today.

  2. SHA1 - Uses Security Hash Algorithm (SHA1) hash published in 1995. The output hash is 160 bits in length. Although most widely used, this is not a preferred option today.

  3. HMACSHA256, HMACSHA384, HMACSHA512 - Use the functions SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 of the SHA-2 family. SHA-2 was published in 2001. The output hash lengths are 256, 384, and 512 bits, respectively,as the hash functions’ names indicate.

Plot mean and standard deviation

plt.errorbar can be used to plot x, y, error data (as opposed to the usual plt.plot)

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np

x = np.array([1, 2, 3, 4, 5])
y = np.power(x, 2) # Effectively y = x**2
e = np.array([1.5, 2.6, 3.7, 4.6, 5.5])

plt.errorbar(x, y, e, linestyle='None', marker='^')

plt.show()

plt.errorbar accepts the same arguments as plt.plot with additional yerr and xerr which default to None (i.e. if you leave them blank it will act as plt.plot).

Difference between final and effectively final

A variable is final or effectively final when it's initialized once and it's never mutated in its owner class. And we can't initialize it in loops or inner classes.

Final:

final int number;
number = 23;

Effectively Final:

int number;
number = 34;

Note: Final and Effective Final are similar(Their value don't change after assignment) but just that effective Final variables are not declared with Keyword final.

Why can't I use Docker CMD multiple times to run multiple services?

You are right, the second Dockerfile will overwrite the CMD command of the first one. Docker will always run a single command, not more. So at the end of your Dockerfile, you can specify one command to run. Not more.

But you can execute both commands in one line:

FROM centos+ssh
EXPOSE 22
EXPOSE 4149
CMD service sshd start && /opt/mq/sbin/rabbitmq-server start

What you could also do to make your Dockerfile a little bit cleaner, you could put your CMD commands to an extra file:

FROM centos+ssh
EXPOSE 22
EXPOSE 4149
CMD sh /home/centos/all_your_commands.sh

And a file like this:

service sshd start &
/opt/mq/sbin/rabbitmq-server start

How can I run an EXE program from a Windows Service using C#?

You can execute an .exe from a Windows service very well in Windows XP. I have done it myself in the past.

You need to make sure you had checked the option "Allow to interact with the Desktop" in the Windows service properties. If that is not done, it will not execute.

I need to check in Windows 7 or Vista as these versions requires additional security privileges so it may throw an error, but I am quite sure it can be achieved either directly or indirectly. For XP I am certain as I had done it myself.

How to set 24-hours format for date on java?

LocalDateTime#plusHours

LocalDateTime is modelled on ISO-8601 standards and was introduced with Java-8 as part of JSR-310 implementation.

Use LocalDateTime#plusHours to get a copy of this LocalDateTime with the specified number of hours added.

import java.time.LocalDateTime;
import java.time.ZoneId;
import java.time.format.DateTimeFormatter;
import java.util.Locale;

public class Main {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        // ZoneId.systemDefault() returns the timezone of your JVM. It is also the
        // default timezone for date-time type i.e.
        // LocalDateTime.now(ZoneId.systemDefault()) is same as LocalDateTime.now().
        // Change the timezone as per your requirement e.g. ZoneId.of("Europe/London")
        LocalDateTime ldt = LocalDateTime.now(ZoneId.systemDefault());
        System.out.println(ldt);

        LocalDateTime after8Hours = ldt.plusHours(8);
        System.out.println(after8Hours);

        // Custom format
        DateTimeFormatter dtfTimeFormat24H = DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern("dd/MM/uuuu HH:mm:ss", Locale.ENGLISH);
        DateTimeFormatter dtfTimeFormat12h = DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern("dd/MM/uuuu hh:mm:ss a", Locale.ENGLISH);
        System.out.println(dtfTimeFormat24H.format(after8Hours));
        System.out.println(dtfTimeFormat12h.format(after8Hours));
    }
}

Output:

Some important notes:

  1. A date-time object is supposed to store the information about date, time, timezone etc., not about the formatting. You can format a date-time object into a String with the pattern of your choice using date-time formatting API.
    • The date-time formatting API for the modern date-time types is in the package, java.time.format e.g. java.time.format.DateTimeFormatter, java.time.format.DateTimeFormatterBuilder etc.
    • The date-time formatting API for the legacy date-time types is in the package, java.text e.g. java.text.SimpleDateFormat, java.text.DateFormat etc.
  2. The java.util.Date object is not a real date-time object like the modern date-time types; rather, it represents the milliseconds from the Epoch of January 1, 1970. When you print an object of java.util.Date, its toString method returns the date-time in the JVM's timezone, calculated from this milliseconds value. If you need to print the date-time in a different timezone, you will need to set the timezone to SimpleDateFormat and obtain the formatted string from it.
  3. The date-time API of java.util and their formatting API, SimpleDateFormat are outdated and error-prone. It is recommended to stop using them completely and switch to the modern date-time API.

Conda version pip install -r requirements.txt --target ./lib

You can always try this:

/home/user/anaconda3/bin/pip install -r requirements.txt

This simply uses the pip installed in the conda environment. If pip is not preinstalled in your environment you can always run the following command

conda install pip

What is reflection and why is it useful?

One of my favorite uses of reflection is the below Java dump method. It takes any object as a parameter and uses the Java reflection API to print out every field name and value.

import java.lang.reflect.Array;
import java.lang.reflect.Field;

public static String dump(Object o, int callCount) {
    callCount++;
    StringBuffer tabs = new StringBuffer();
    for (int k = 0; k < callCount; k++) {
        tabs.append("\t");
    }
    StringBuffer buffer = new StringBuffer();
    Class oClass = o.getClass();
    if (oClass.isArray()) {
        buffer.append("\n");
        buffer.append(tabs.toString());
        buffer.append("[");
        for (int i = 0; i < Array.getLength(o); i++) {
            if (i < 0)
                buffer.append(",");
            Object value = Array.get(o, i);
            if (value.getClass().isPrimitive() ||
                    value.getClass() == java.lang.Long.class ||
                    value.getClass() == java.lang.String.class ||
                    value.getClass() == java.lang.Integer.class ||
                    value.getClass() == java.lang.Boolean.class
                    ) {
                buffer.append(value);
            } else {
                buffer.append(dump(value, callCount));
            }
        }
        buffer.append(tabs.toString());
        buffer.append("]\n");
    } else {
        buffer.append("\n");

Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {XXXX} failed due to the following error: 80040154

Had a related issue with a different, but similar fix:

I had a Windows service project set to "Any-CPU" using a 64-bit DLL. Same error message. Tried a whole bunch of things, but nothing worked. Finally, I went into project Properties -> Build and noticed that project had "Prefer 32-bit" checked. Unchecked this and no more error.

My guess is that the windows service was expecting a 32-bit DLL, and couldn't find it.

How to convert a string into double and vice versa?

olliej's rounding method is wrong for negative numbers

  • 2.4 rounded is 2 (olliej's method gets this right)
  • -2.4 rounded is -2 (olliej's method returns -1)

Here's an alternative

  int myInt = (int)(myDouble + (myDouble>0 ? 0.5 : -0.5))

You could of course use a rounding function from math.h

How do I define global variables in CoffeeScript?

Since coffeescript is rarely used on it's own, you can use global variable supplied by either node.js or browserify (and any descendants like coffeeify, gulp build scripts, etc).

In node.js global is global namespace.

In browserify global is equal to window.

So, just:

somefunc = ->
  global.variable = 123

How to abort an interactive rebase if --abort doesn't work?

Try to follow the advice you see on the screen, and first reset your master's HEAD to the commit it expects.

git update-ref refs/heads/master b918ac16a33881ce00799bea63d9c23bf7022d67

Then, abort the rebase again.

Optional. String that specifies the name of the window. This name is used as the value for the TARGET attribute on a form or an anchor element.

  • _blank The sURL is loaded into a new, unnamed window.
  • _media The url is loaded in the Media Bar in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and later. This feature is no longer supported. By default the url is loaded into a new browser window or tab.
  • _parent The sURL is loaded into the current frame's parent. If the frame has no parent, this value acts as the value _self.
  • _search Disabled in Windows Internet Explorer 7, see Security and Compatibility in Internet Explorer 7 for details. Otherwise, the sURL is opened in the browser's search pane in Internet Explorer 5 or later.
  • _self The current document is replaced with the specified sURL.
  • _top sURL replaces any framesets that may be loaded. If there are no framesets defined, this value acts as the value _self.

if using another wname, window.open won't execute...

What are the benefits of learning Vim?

If you're a programmer who edits a lot of text, then it's important to learn an A Serious Text Editor. Which Serious Text Editor you learn is not terribly important and is largely dependent on the types of environments you expect to be editing in.

The reason is that these editors are highly optimized to perform the kinds of tasks that you will be doing a lot. For example, consider adding the same bit of text to the end of every line. This is trivial in A Serious Text Editor, but ridiculously cumbersome otherwise.

Usually vim's killer features are considered: A) that it's available on pretty much every Unix you'll ever encounter and B) your fingers very rarely have to leave the home row, which means you'll be able to edit text very, very quickly. It's also usually very fast and lightweight even when editing huge files.

There are plenty of alternatives, however. Emacs is the most common example, of course, and it's much more than just an advanced text editor if you really dig into it. I'm personally a very happy TextMate user now after years of using vim/gvim.

The trick to switching to any of these is to force yourself to use them the way they were intended. For example, in vim, if you're manually performing every step in a multi-step process or if you're using the arrow keys or the mouse then there's probably a better way to do it. Stop what you're doing and look it up.

If you do nothing else, learn the basic navigation controls for both vim and Emacs since they pop up all over the place. For example, you can use Emacs-style controls in any text input field in Mac OS, in most Unix shells, in Eclipse, etc. You can use vim-style controls in the less(1) command, on Slashdot, on gmail, etc.

Have fun!

How to add border radius on table row

Use border-collapse:seperate; and border-spacing:0; but only use border-right and border-bottom for the tds, with border-top applied to th and border-left applied to only tr td:nth-child(1).

You can then apply border radius to the corner tds (using nth-child to find them)

How to select all instances of a variable and edit variable name in Sublime

This worked for me. Put your cursor at the beginning of the word you want to replace, then

CtrlK, CtrlD, CtrlD ...

That should select as many instances of the word as you like, then you can just type the replacement.

I don't believe so. Once you want to go bigger than a signed long, I think BigInteger is the only (out of the box) way to go.

Disable a Maven plugin defined in a parent POM

The following works for me when disabling Findbugs in a child POM:

<plugin>
    <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
    <artifactId>findbugs-maven-plugin</artifactId>
    <executions>
        <execution>
            <id>ID_AS_IN_PARENT</id> <!-- id is necessary sometimes -->
            <phase>none</phase>
        </execution>
    </executions>
</plugin>

Note: the full definition of the Findbugs plugin is in our parent/super POM, so it'll inherit the version and so-on.

In Maven 3, you'll need to use:

 <configuration>
      <skip>true</skip>
 </configuration>

for the plugin.

What is the maximum length of data I can put in a BLOB column in MySQL?

May or may not be accurate, but according to this site: http://www.htmlite.com/mysql003.php.

BLOB A string with a maximum length of 65535 characters.

The MySQL manual says:

The maximum size of a BLOB or TEXT object is determined by its type, but the largest value you actually can transmit between the client and server is determined by the amount of available memory and the size of the communications buffers

I think the first site gets their answers from interpreting the MySQL manual, per http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/storage-requirements.html

I could not access the context object directly.
My solution is as following:

How does numpy.newaxis work and when to use it?

You started with a one-dimensional list of numbers. Once you used numpy.newaxis, you turned it into a two-dimensional matrix, consisting of four rows of one column each.

You could then use that matrix for matrix multiplication, or involve it in the construction of a larger 4 x n matrix.

Get only records created today in laravel

No need to use Carbon::today because laravel uses function now() instead as a helper function

So to get any records that have been created today you can use the below code:

Model::whereDay('created_at', now()->day)->get();

You need to use whereDate so created_at will be converted to date.

How to parse a JSON and turn its values into an Array?

for your example:

{'profiles': [{'name':'john', 'age': 44}, {'name':'Alex','age':11}]}

you will have to do something of this effect:

JSONObject myjson = new JSONObject(the_json);
JSONArray the_json_array = myjson.getJSONArray("profiles");

this returns the array object.

Then iterating will be as follows:

    int size = the_json_array.length();
    ArrayList<JSONObject> arrays = new ArrayList<JSONObject>();
    for (int i = 0; i < size; i++) {
        JSONObject another_json_object = the_json_array.getJSONObject(i);
            //Blah blah blah...
            arrays.add(another_json_object);
    }

//Finally
JSONObject[] jsons = new JSONObject[arrays.size()];
arrays.toArray(jsons);

//The end...

You will have to determine if the data is an array (simply checking that charAt(0) starts with [ character).

Hope this helps.

Query to list number of records in each table in a database

I think that the shortest, fastest and simplest way would be:

SELECT
    object_name(object_id) AS [Table],
    SUM(row_count) AS [Count]
FROM
    sys.dm_db_partition_stats
WHERE
    --object_schema_name(object_id) = 'dbo' AND
    index_id < 2
GROUP BY
    object_id

What does '&' do in a C++ declaration?

#include<iostream>
using namespace std;
int add(int &number);

int main ()
{
            int number;
            int result;
            number=5;
            cout << "The value of the variable number before calling the function : " << number << endl;
            result=add(&number);
            cout << "The value of the variable number after the function is returned : " << number << endl;
            cout << "The value of result : " << result << endl;
            return(0);
}

int add(int &p)
{
            *p=*p+100;
            return(*p);
}

This is invalid code on several counts. Running it through g++ gives:

crap.cpp: In function ‘int main()’:
crap.cpp:11: error: invalid initialization of non-const reference of type ‘int&’ from a temporary of type ‘int*’
crap.cpp:3: error: in passing argument 1 of ‘int add(int&)’
crap.cpp: In function ‘int add(int&)’:
crap.cpp:19: error: invalid type argument of ‘unary *’
crap.cpp:19: error: invalid type argument of ‘unary *’
crap.cpp:20: error: invalid type argument of ‘unary *’

A valid version of the code reads:

#include<iostream>
using namespace std;
int add(int &number);

int main ()
{
            int number;
            int result;
            number=5;
            cout << "The value of the variable number before calling the function : " << number << endl;
            result=add(number);
            cout << "The value of the variable number after the function is returned : " << number << endl;
            cout << "The value of result : " << result << endl;
            return(0);
}

int add(int &p)
{
            p=p+100;
            return p;
}

What is happening here is that you are passing a variable "as is" to your function. This is roughly equivalent to:

int add(int *p)
{
      *p=*p+100;
      return *p;
}

However, passing a reference to a function ensures that you cannot do things like pointer arithmetic with the reference. For example:

int add(int &p)
{
            *p=*p+100;
            return p;
}

is invalid.

If you must use a pointer to a reference, that has to be done explicitly:

int add(int &p)
{
                    int* i = &p;
            i=i+100L;
            return *i;
}

Which on a test run gives (as expected) junk output:

The value of the variable number before calling the function : 5
The value of the variable number after the function is returned : 5
The value of result : 1399090792

How to specify a local file within html using the file: scheme?

The file: URL scheme refers to a file on the client machine. There is no hostname in the file: scheme; you just provide the path of the file. So, the file on your local machine would be file:///~User/2ndFile.html. Notice the three slashes; the hostname part of the URL is empty, so the slash at the beginning of the path immediately follows the double slash at the beginning of the URL. You will also need to expand the user's path; ~ does no expand in a file: URL. So you would need file:///home/User/2ndFile.html (on most Unixes), file:///Users/User/2ndFile.html (on Mac OS X), or file:///C:/Users/User/2ndFile.html (on Windows).

Many browsers, for security reasons, do not allow linking from a file that is loaded from a server to a local file. So, you may not be able to do this from a page loaded via HTTP; you may only be able to link to file: URLs from other local pages.

Set the text in a span

This is because you have wrong selector. According to your markup, .ui-icon and .ui-icon-circle-triangle-w" should point to the same <span> element. So you should use:

$(".ui-icon.ui-icon-circle-triangle-w").html("<<");

or

$(".ui-datepicker-prev .ui-icon").html("<<");

or

$(".ui-datepicker-prev span").html("<<");

Android SQLite Example

Sqlite helper class helps us to manage database creation and version management. SQLiteOpenHelper takes care of all database management activities. To use it,
1.Override onCreate(), onUpgrade() methods of SQLiteOpenHelper. Optionally override onOpen() method.
2.Use this subclass to create either a readable or writable database and use the SQLiteDatabase's four API methods insert(), execSQL(), update(), delete() to create, read, update and delete rows of your table.

Example to create a MyEmployees table and to select and insert records:

public class MyDatabaseHelper extends SQLiteOpenHelper {

    private static final String DATABASE_NAME = "DBName";

    private static final int DATABASE_VERSION = 2;

    // Database creation sql statement
    private static final String DATABASE_CREATE = "create table MyEmployees
                                 ( _id integer primary key,name text not null);";

    public MyDatabaseHelper(Context context) {
        super(context, DATABASE_NAME, null, DATABASE_VERSION);
    }

    // Method is called during creation of the database
    @Override
    public void onCreate(SQLiteDatabase database) {
        database.execSQL(DATABASE_CREATE);
    }

    // Method is called during an upgrade of the database,
    @Override
    public void onUpgrade(SQLiteDatabase database,int oldVersion,int newVersion){
        Log.w(MyDatabaseHelper.class.getName(),
                         "Upgrading database from version " + oldVersion + " to "
                         + newVersion + ", which will destroy all old data");
        database.execSQL("DROP TABLE IF EXISTS MyEmployees");
        onCreate(database);
    }
}

Now you can use this class as below,

public class MyDB{

    private MyDatabaseHelper dbHelper;

    private SQLiteDatabase database;

    public final static String EMP_TABLE="MyEmployees"; // name of table

    public final static String EMP_ID="_id"; // id value for employee
    public final static String EMP_NAME="name"; // name of employee

    /**
     *
     * @param context
     */
    public MyDB(Context context){
        dbHelper = new MyDatabaseHelper(context);
        database = dbHelper.getWritableDatabase();
    }

    public long createRecords(String id, String name){
        ContentValues values = new ContentValues();
        values.put(EMP_ID, id);
        values.put(EMP_NAME, name);
        return database.insert(EMP_TABLE, null, values);
    }

    public Cursor selectRecords() {
        String[] cols = new String[] {EMP_ID, EMP_NAME};
        Cursor mCursor = database.query(true, EMP_TABLE,cols,null
            , null, null, null, null, null);
        if (mCursor != null) {
            mCursor.moveToFirst();
        }
        return mCursor; // iterate to get each value.
    }
}

Now you can use MyDB class in you activity to have all the database operations. The create records will help you to insert the values similarly you can have your own functions for update and delete.

Twitter Bootstrap Datepicker within modal window

I think is better to change the logical function in the plugin. Around row 552 i change this:

            var zIndex = parseInt(this.element.parents().filter(function(){
                return $(this).css('z-index') !== 'auto';
            }).first().css('z-index'))+10;

into this:

            var zIndex = parseInt(this.element.parents().filter(function(){
                return $(this).css('z-index') !== 'auto';
            }).first().css('z-index')) + 10 * 1000; //think is enought

Compare 2 arrays which returns difference

var arrayDiff = function (firstArr, secondArr) {
    var i, o = [], fLen = firstArr.length, sLen = secondArr.length, len;

    if (fLen > sLen) {
        len = sLen;
    } else if (fLen < sLen) {
        len = fLen;
    } else {
        len = sLen;
    }
    for (i=0; i < len; i++) {
        if (firstArr[i] !== secondArr[i]) {
            o.push({idx: i, elem1: firstArr[i], elem2: secondArr[i]});  //idx: array index
        }
    }

    if (fLen > sLen) {  // first > second
        for (i=sLen; i< fLen; i++) {
            o.push({idx: i, 0: firstArr[i], 1: undefined});
        }
    } else if (fLen < sLen) {
        for (i=fLen; i< sLen; i++) {
            o.push({idx: i, 0: undefined, 1: secondArr[i]});
        }
    }

    return o;
};

Javascript, viewing [object HTMLInputElement]

When you get a value from client make and that a value for example.

var current_text = document.getElementById('user_text').value;
        var http = new XMLHttpRequest();
        http.onreadystatechange = function () {

            if (http.readyState == 4 &&  http.status == 200 ){
                var response = http.responseText;
              document.getElementById('server_response').value = response;
                console.log(response.value);

            }

CSS list-style-image size

Thanks to Chris for the starting point here is a improvement which addresses the resizing of the images used, the use of first-child is just to indicate you could use a variety of icons within the list to give you full control.

ul li:first-child:before {
    content: '';
    display: inline-block;
    height: 25px;
    width: 35px;
    background-image: url('../images/Money.png');
    background-size: contain;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    margin-left: -35px;
}

This seems to work well in all modern browsers, you will need to ensure that the width and the negative margin left have the same value, hope it helps

It will return a DF of 1 column (series values) + 1 index (0....n)

How to get difference between two dates in Year/Month/Week/Day?

Use Noda Time:

var ld1 = new LocalDate(2012, 1, 1);
var ld2 = new LocalDate(2013, 12, 25);
var period = Period.Between(ld1, ld2);

Debug.WriteLine(period);        // "P1Y11M24D"  (ISO8601 format)
Debug.WriteLine(period.Years);  // 1
Debug.WriteLine(period.Months); // 11
Debug.WriteLine(period.Days);   // 24

Java Singleton and Synchronization

What is the best way to implement Singleton in Java, in a multithreaded environment?

Refer to this post for best way to implement Singleton.

What is an efficient way to implement a singleton pattern in Java?

What happens when multiple threads try to access getInstance() method at the same time?

It depends on the way you have implemented the method.If you use double locking without volatile variable, you may get partially constructed Singleton object.

Refer to this question for more details:

Why is volatile used in this example of double checked locking

Can we make singleton's getInstance() synchronized?

Is synchronization really needed, when using Singleton classes?

Not required if you implement the Singleton in below ways

  1. static intitalization
  2. enum
  3. LazyInitalaization with Initialization-on-demand_holder_idiom

Refer to this question fore more details

INSTALL_FAILED_DUPLICATE_PERMISSION... C2D_MESSAGE

I've found a solution that works for me.

In My Device (Nexus 7) Android 5.0. Lollipop I follow these steps.

After Uninstalling App You will find App Name under Apps List of the Downloaded tab.

  • Go to Settings
  • Apps
  • At the bottom of the list, you will find YourApp with a "NOT INSTALLED" Tag
  • Open
  • Click on OptionMenu and Select "Uninstall for all Users"

After these steps, I successfully install the new app and it's running well.

How do I add PHP code/file to HTML(.html) files?

AJAX is also a possibility. Effectively you would want data from the php page. Once you have the data you can format in anyway in javascript and display.

var xmlhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
var url = "risingStars.php";

xmlhttp.onreadystatechange = function () {
    if (this.readyState == 4 && this.status == 200) {
        getDbData(this.responseText);
    }
}
xmlhttp.open("GET", url, true);
xmlhttp.send();

function getDbData(response) {

//do whatever you want with respone
}

How to set upload_max_filesize in .htaccess?

Both commands are correct

php_value post_max_size 30M
php_value upload_max_filesize 30M

BUT to use the .htaccess you have to enable rewrite_module in Apache config file. In httpd.conf find this line:

# LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

and remove the #.

Change arrow colors in Bootstraps carousel

Currently Bootstrap 4 uses a background-image with embbed SVG data info that include the color of the SVG shape. Something like:

.carousel-control-prev-icon { background-image:url("data:image/svg+xml;charset=utf8,%3Csvg xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg' fill='%23fff' viewBox='0 0 8 8'%3E%3Cpath d='M5.25 0l-4 4 4 4 1.5-1.5-2.5-2.5 2.5-2.5-1.5-1.5z'/%3E%3C/svg%3E"); }

Note the part about fill='%23fff' it fills the shape with a color, in this case #fff (white), for red simply replace with #f00

Finally, it is safe to include this (same change for next-icon):

.carousel-control-prev-icon {background-image: url("data:image/svg+xml;charset=utf8,%3Csvg xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg' fill='%23f00' viewBox='0 0 8 8'%3E%3Cpath d='M5.25 0l-4 4 4 4 1.5-1.5-2.5-2.5 2.5-2.5-1.5-1.5z'/%3E%3C/svg%3E"); }

nano error: Error opening terminal: xterm-256color

  1. edit your .bash_profile file

    vim .bash_profile

  2. commnet

    #export TERM=xterm-256color

  3. add this

    export TERMINFO=/usr/share/terminfo

    export TERM=xterm-basic

    to your .bash_profile

  4. finally

    run:

Why use #ifndef CLASS_H and #define CLASS_H in .h file but not in .cpp?

The CLASS_H is an include guard; it's used to avoid the same header file being included multiple times (via different routes) within the same CPP file (or, more accurately, the same translation unit), which would lead to multiple-definition errors.

Include guards aren't needed on CPP files because, by definition, the contents of the CPP file are only read once.

You seem to have interpreted the include guards as having the same function as import statements in other languages (such as Java); that's not the case, however. The #include itself is roughly equivalent to the import in other languages.

Python Script Uploading files via FTP

To avoid getting the encryption error you can also try out below commands

ftp = ftplib.FTP_TLS("ftps.dummy.com")
ftp.login("username", "password")
ftp.prot_p()
file = open("filename", "rb")
ftp.storbinary("STOR filename", file)
file.close()
ftp.close()

ftp.prot_p() ensure that your connections are encrypted

IntelliJ - show where errors are

In my case, I unknowingly unchecked 'Error Stripe Mark' option (Idea 2018.2: Settings > Editor > Color Scheme > General and expand `Error and Warnings' & click 'Error').

Fix is to check 'Error Stripe Mark' option of 'Error' (as highlighted in the below image). Now you will see the error marks in scrollbar area.

How can I introduce multiple conditions in LIKE operator?

This is a good use of a temporary table.

CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE patterns (
  pattern VARCHAR(20)
);

INSERT INTO patterns VALUES ('ABC%'), ('XYZ%'), ('PQR%');

SELECT t.* FROM tbl t JOIN patterns p ON (t.col LIKE p.pattern);

In the example patterns, there's no way col could match more than one pattern, so you can be sure you'll see each row of tbl at most once in the result. But if your patterns are such that col could match more than one, you should use the DISTINCT query modifier.

SELECT DISTINCT t.* FROM tbl t JOIN patterns p ON (t.col LIKE p.pattern);

How to move or copy files listed by 'find' command in unix?

If you're using GNU find,

find . -mtime 1 -exec cp -t ~/test/ {} +

This works as well as piping the output into xargs while avoiding the pitfalls of doing so (it handles embedded spaces and newlines without having to use find ... -print0 | xargs -0 ...).

What's the difference between subprocess Popen and call (how can I use them)?

There are two ways to do the redirect. Both apply to either subprocess.Popen or subprocess.call.

  1. Set the keyword argument shell = True or executable = /path/to/the/shell and specify the command just as you have it there.

  2. Since you're just redirecting the output to a file, set the keyword argument

    stdout = an_open_writeable_file_object

    where the object points to the output file.

subprocess.Popen is more general than subprocess.call.

Popen doesn't block, allowing you to interact with the process while it's running, or continue with other things in your Python program. The call to Popen returns a Popen object.

call does block. While it supports all the same arguments as the Popen constructor, so you can still set the process' output, environmental variables, etc., your script waits for the program to complete, and call returns a code representing the process' exit status.

returncode = call(*args, **kwargs)

is basically the same as calling

returncode = Popen(*args, **kwargs).wait()

call is just a convenience function. It's implementation in CPython is in subprocess.py:

def call(*popenargs, timeout=None, **kwargs):
    """Run command with arguments. Wait for command to complete or
    timeout, then return the returncode attribute.

    The arguments are the same as for the Popen constructor. Example:

    retcode = call(["ls", "-l"])
    """
    with Popen(*popenargs, **kwargs) as p:
        try:
            return p.wait(timeout=timeout)
        except:
            p.kill()
            p.wait()
            raise

As you can see, it's a thin wrapper around Popen.

Set HTML element's style property in javascript

You can try grabbing the cssText and className.

var css1 = table.rows[1].style.cssText;
var css2 = table.rows[2].style.cssText;
var class1 = table.rows[1].className;
var class2 = table.rows[2].className;

// sort

// loop
    if (i%2==0) {
        table.rows[i].style.cssText = css1;
        table.rows[i].className = class1;
    } else {
        table.rows[i].style.cssText = css2;
        table.rows[i].className = class2;
    }

Not entirely sure about browser compatibility with cssText, though.

Get value of Span Text

The accepted answer is close... but no cigar!

Use textContent instead of innerHTML if you strictly want a string to be returned to you.

innerHTML can have the side effect of giving you a node element if there's other dom elements in there. textContent will guard against this possibility.

Deleting elements from std::set while iterating

This behaviour is implementation specific. To guarantee the correctness of the iterator you should use "it = numbers.erase(it);" statement if you need to delete the element and simply incerement iterator in other case.

Create a shortcut on Desktop

You can use this ShellLink.cs class to create the shortcut.

To get the desktop directory, use:

var dir = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.DesktopDirectory);

or use Environment.SpecialFolder.CommonDesktopDirectory to create it for all users.

Validating URL in Java

Just important to point that the URL object handle both validation and connection. Then, only protocols for which a handler has been provided in sun.net.www.protocol are authorized (file, ftp, gopher, http, https, jar, mailto, netdoc) are valid ones. For instance, try to make a new URL with the ldap protocol:

new URL("ldap://myhost:389")

You will get a java.net.MalformedURLException: unknown protocol: ldap.

You need to implement your own handler and register it through URL.setURLStreamHandlerFactory(). Quite overkill if you just want to validate the URL syntax, a regexp seems to be a simpler solution.

How to subtract X days from a date using Java calendar?

You could use the add method and pass it a negative number. However, you could also write a simpler method that doesn't use the Calendar class such as the following

public static void addDays(Date d, int days)
{
    d.setTime( d.getTime() + (long)days*1000*60*60*24 );
}

This gets the timestamp value of the date (milliseconds since the epoch) and adds the proper number of milliseconds. You could pass a negative integer for the days parameter to do subtraction. This would be simpler than the "proper" calendar solution:

public static void addDays(Date d, int days)
{
    Calendar c = Calendar.getInstance();
    c.setTime(d);
    c.add(Calendar.DATE, days);
    d.setTime( c.getTime().getTime() );
}

Note that both of these solutions change the Date object passed as a parameter rather than returning a completely new Date. Either function could be easily changed to do it the other way if desired.

Do subclasses inherit private fields?

Most of the confusion in the question/answers here surrounds the definition of Inheritance.

Obviously, as @DigitalRoss explains an OBJECT of a subclass must contain its superclass's private fields. As he states, having no access to a private member doesn't mean its not there.

However. This is different than the notion of inheritance for a class. As is the case in the java world, where there is a question of semantics the arbiter is the Java Language Specification (currently 3rd edition).

As the JLS states (https://docs.oracle.com/javase/specs/jls/se8/html/jls-8.html#jls-8.2):

Members of a class that are declared private are not inherited by subclasses of that class. Only members of a class that are declared protected or public are inherited by subclasses declared in a package other than the one in which the class is declared.

This addresses the exact question posed by the interviewer: "do subCLASSES inherit private fields". (emphasis added by me)

The answer is No. They do not. OBJECTS of subclasses contain private fields of their superclasses. The subclass itself has NO NOTION of private fields of its superclass.

Is it semantics of a pedantic nature? Yes. Is it a useful interview question? Probably not. But the JLS establishes the definition for the Java world, and it does so (in this case) unambiguously.

EDITED (removed a parallel quote from Bjarne Stroustrup which due to the differences between java and c++ probably only add to the confusion. I'll let my answer rest on the JLS :)

Compare two files report difference in python

The difflib library is useful for this, and comes in the standard library. I like the unified diff format.

http://docs.python.org/2/library/difflib.html#difflib.unified_diff

import difflib
import sys

with open('/tmp/hosts0', 'r') as hosts0:
    with open('/tmp/hosts1', 'r') as hosts1:
        diff = difflib.unified_diff(
            hosts0.readlines(),
            hosts1.readlines(),
            fromfile='hosts0',
            tofile='hosts1',
        )
        for line in diff:
            sys.stdout.write(line)

Outputs:

--- hosts0
+++ hosts1
@@ -1,5 +1,4 @@
 one
 two
-dogs
 three

And here is a dodgy version that ignores certain lines. There might be edge cases that don't work, and there are surely better ways to do this, but maybe it will be good enough for your purposes.

import difflib
import sys

with open('/tmp/hosts0', 'r') as hosts0:
    with open('/tmp/hosts1', 'r') as hosts1:
        diff = difflib.unified_diff(
            hosts0.readlines(),
            hosts1.readlines(),
            fromfile='hosts0',
            tofile='hosts1',
            n=0,
        )
        for line in diff:
            for prefix in ('---', '+++', '@@'):
                if line.startswith(prefix):
                    break
            else:
                sys.stdout.write(line[1:])

How to round up with excel VBA round()?

Try this function, it's ok to round up a double

'---------------Start -------------
Function Round_Up(ByVal d As Double) As Integer
    Dim result As Integer
    result = Math.Round(d)
    If result >= d Then
        Round_Up = result
    Else
        Round_Up = result + 1
    End If
End Function

What exactly should be set in PYTHONPATH?

You don't have to set either of them. PYTHONPATH can be set to point to additional directories with private libraries in them. If PYTHONHOME is not set, Python defaults to using the directory where python.exe was found, so that dir should be in PATH.

javascript date + 7 days

_x000D_
_x000D_
var date = new Date();_x000D_
date.setDate(date.getDate() + 7);_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(date);
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

And yes, this also works if date.getDate() + 7 is greater than the last day of the month. See MDN for more information.

Checking if a string array contains a value, and if so, getting its position

you can try like this...you can use Array.IndexOf() , if you want to know the position also

       string [] arr = {"One","Two","Three"};
       var target = "One";
       var results = Array.FindAll(arr, s => s.Equals(target));

How do I show my global Git configuration?

You can also call git config -e to open the configuration file in your editor directly. The Git configuration file is much more readable that the -l output, so I always tend to use the -e flag.

So to summarise:

git config -l # List Git configuration settings (same as --list)
git config -e # Opens Git configuration in the default editor (same as --edit)
  • Without parameters it interacts with the local .git/config.
  • With --global it interacts with ~/.gitconfig.
  • And with --system it interacts with $(prefix)/etc/gitconfig.

(I couldn't really find what $(prefix) means, but it seems to default to $HOME.)

An exception of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException' occurred in System.Data.dll

There are some problems with your code. First I advise to use parametrized queries so you avoid SQL Injection attacks and also parameter types are discovered by framework:

var cmd = new SqlCommand("SELECT EmpName FROM Employee WHERE EmpID = @id", con);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@id", id.Text);

Second, as you are interested only in one value getting returned from the query, it is better to use ExecuteScalar:

var name = cmd.ExecuteScalar();

if (name != null)
{
   position = name.ToString();
   Response.Write("User Registration successful");
}
else
{
    Console.WriteLine("No Employee found.");
}

The last thing is to wrap SqlConnection and SqlCommand into using so any resources used by those will be disposed of:

string position;

using (SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection("server=free-pc\\FATMAH; Integrated Security=True; database=Workflow; "))
{
  con.Open();

  using (var cmd = new SqlCommand("SELECT EmpName FROM Employee WHERE EmpID = @id", con))
  {
    cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@id", id.Text);

    var name = cmd.ExecuteScalar();

    if (name != null)
    {
       position = name.ToString();
       Response.Write("User Registration successful");
    }
    else
    {
        Console.WriteLine("No Employee found.");
    }
  }
}

How to Position a table HTML?

You would want to use CSS to achieve that.

say you have a table with the attribute id="my_table"

You would want to write the following in your css file

#my_table{
    margin-top:10px //moves your table 10pixels down
    margin-left:10px //moves your table 10pixels right
}

if you do not have a CSS file then you may just add margin-top:10px, margin-left:10px to the style attribute in your table element like so

<table style="margin-top:10px; margin-left:10px;">
    ....
</table>

There are a lot of resources on the net describing CSS and HTML in detail

How to access SOAP services from iPhone

I've historically rolled my own access at a low level (XML generation and parsing) to deal with the occasional need to do SOAP style requests from Objective-C. That said, there's a library available called SOAPClient (soapclient) that is open source (BSD licensed) and available on Google Code (mac-soapclient) that might be of interest.

I won't attest to it's abilities or effectiveness, as I've never used it or had to work with it's API's, but it is available and might provide a quick solution for you depending on your needs.

Apple had, at one time, a very broken utility called WS-MakeStubs. I don't think it's available on the iPhone, but you might also be interested in an open-source library intended to replace that - code generate out Objective-C for interacting with a SOAP client. Again, I haven't used it - but I've marked it down in my notes: wsdl2objc

Confused about __str__ on list in Python

Answer to the question

As pointed out in another answer and as you can read in PEP 3140, str on a list calls for each item __repr__. There is not much you can do about that part.

If you implement __repr__, you will get something more descriptive, but if implemented correctly, not exactly what you expected.

Proper implementation

The fast, but wrong solution is to alias __repr__ to __str__.

__repr__ should not be set to __str__ unconditionally. __repr__ should create a representation, that should look like a valid Python expression that could be used to recreate an object with the same value. In this case, this would rather be Node(2) than 2.

A proper implementation of __repr__ makes it possible to recreate the object. In this example, it should also contain the other significant members, like neighours and distance.

An incomplete example:

class Node:

    def __init__(self, id, neighbours=[], distance=0):
        self.id = id
        self.neighbours = neighbours
        self.distance = distance

    def __str__(self):
        return str(self.id)

    def __repr__(self):
        return "Node(id={0.id}, neighbours={0.neighbours!r}, distance={0.distance})".format(self)
        # in an elaborate implementation, members that have the default
        # value could be left out, but this would hide some information

uno = Node(1)
due = Node(2)
tri = Node(3)
qua = Node(4)

print uno
print str(uno)
print repr(uno)

uno.neighbours.append([[due, 4], [tri, 5]])

print uno
print uno.neighbours
print repr(uno)

Note: print repr(uno) together with a proper implementation of __eq__ and __ne__ or __cmp__ would allow to recreate the object and check for equality.

Can you pass parameters to an AngularJS controller on creation?

The view should not dictate config

In Angular, the template should never dictate configuration, which is inherently what people desire when they want to pass arguments to controllers from a template file. This becomes a slippery slope. If config settings are hard-coded in templates (such as by a directive or controller argument attribute), you can no longer re-use that template for anything but that single use. Soon you'll want to re-use that template, but with different config and now in order to do so you'll either be pre-processing the templates to inject variables before it gets passed to angular or using massive directives to spit out giant blocks of HTML so you re-use all of the controller HTML except for the wrapper div and it's arguments. For small projects it's no big deal. For something big (what angular excels at), it gets ugly quick.

The Alternative: Modules

This type of configuration is what modules were designed to handle. In many angular tutorials people have a single module for their entire application, but really the system is designed and fully supports many small modules each which wrap small pieces of the total application. Ideally, controllers, modules etc would be declared in separate files and stitched together in specific re-usable chunks. When your application is designed this way, you get a lot of re-use in addition to easy controller arguments.

The example below has 2 modules, re-using the same controller, but each with their own config settings. That config settings are passed in via dependency injection using module.value. This adheres to the angular way because we have the following: constructor dependency injection, reusable controller code, reusable controller templates (the controller div could easily be included with ng-include), easily unit-testable system without HTML, and lastly re-usable modules as the vehicle for stitching the pieces together.

Here's an example:

<!-- index.html -->
<div id="module1">
    <div ng-controller="MyCtrl">
        <div>{{foo}}</div>
    </div>
</div>
<div id="module2">
    <div ng-controller="MyCtrl">
        <div>{{foo}}</div>
    </div>
</div>
<script>
    // part of this template, or a JS file designed to be used with this template
    angular.element(document).ready(function() {
        angular.bootstrap(document.getElementById("module1"), ["module1"]);
        angular.bootstrap(document.getElementById("module2"), ["module2"]);
    });
</script>

<!-- scripts which will likely in be in their seperate files -->
<script>
    // MyCtrl.js
    var MyCtrl = function($scope, foo) {
    $scope.foo = foo;
    }

    MyCtrl.$inject = ["$scope", "foo"];

    // Module1.js
    var module1 = angular.module('module1', []);
    module1.value("foo", "fooValue1");
    module1.controller("MyCtrl", MyCtrl);

    // Module2.js file
    var module2 = angular.module('module2', []);
    module2.value("foo", "fooValue2");
    module2.controller("MyCtrl", MyCtrl);
</script>

How to increase Bootstrap Modal Width?

I had a large grid that needed to be displayed in the modal and just applying the width on body was not working correctly as table was overflowing though it had bootstrap classes on it. I ended up applying same width on modal-body and modal-content :

<!--begin::Modal-->
<div class="modal fade" role="dialog" aria-labelledby="" aria-hidden="true">
    <div class="modal-dialog modal-lg modal-dialog-centered" role="document">
        <div class="modal-content" style="width:980px;">
            <div class="modal-header">
                <h5 class="modal-title" id="">Title</h5>
                <button type="button" class="close" data-dismiss="modal" aria-label="Close">
                    <span aria-hidden="true" class="la la-remove"></span>
                </button>
            </div>
            <form class="m-form m-form--fit m-form--label-align-right">
                <div class="modal-body" style="width:980px;">
                </div>
                <div class="modal-footer">
                    <button type="button" class="btn btn-brand m-btn" data-dismiss="modal">Close</button>

                </div>
            </form>
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

How to call a method with a separate thread in Java?

Create a class that implements the Runnable interface. Put the code you want to run in the run() method - that's the method that you must write to comply to the Runnable interface. In your "main" thread, create a new Thread class, passing the constructor an instance of your Runnable, then call start() on it. start tells the JVM to do the magic to create a new thread, and then call your run method in that new thread.

public class MyRunnable implements Runnable {

    private int var;

    public MyRunnable(int var) {
        this.var = var;
    }

    public void run() {
        // code in the other thread, can reference "var" variable
    }
}

public class MainThreadClass {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
        MyRunnable myRunnable = new MyRunnable(10);
        Thread t = new Thread(myRunnable)
        t.start();
    }
}

Take a look at Java's concurrency tutorial to get started.

If your method is going to be called frequently, then it may not be worth creating a new thread each time, as this is an expensive operation. It would probably be best to use a thread pool of some sort. Have a look at Future, Callable, Executor classes in the java.util.concurrent package.

Put this right before the closing Body tag at the bottom of the page.

<script>
    if (location.hash) {
        location.href = location.hash;
    }
</script>

jQuery is actually not required.
