What is the difference between Cloud, Grid and Cluster?

Cloud is a marketing term, with the bare minimum feature relating to fast automated provisioning of new servers. HA, utility billing, etc are all features people can lump on top to define it to their own liking.

Grid [Computing] is an extension of clusters where multiple loosely coupled systems are used to solve a single problem. They tend to be multi-tenant, sharing some likeness to Clouds, but tend to rely heavily upon custom frameworks that manage the interop between grid nodes.

Cluster hosting is a specialization of clusters where a load balancer is used to direct incoming traffic to one of many worker nodes. It predates grid computing and doesn't rely on a homogenous abstraction of the underlying nodes as much as Grid computing. A web farm tends to have very specialized machines dedicated to each component type and is far more optimized for that specific task.

For pure hosting, Grid computing is the wrong tool. If you have no idea what your traffic shape is, then a Cloud would be useful. For predictable usage that changes at a reasonable pace, then a traditional cluster is fine and the most efficient.

What I usually do is encapsulate the logic of the service in a separate class and start that from a 'runner' class. This runner class can be the actual service or just a console application. So your solution has (atleast) 3 projects:

Mismatch Detected for 'RuntimeLibrary'

I downloaded and extracted Crypto++ in C:\cryptopp. I used Visual Studio Express 2012 to build all the projects inside (as instructed in readme), and everything was built successfully. Then I made a test project in some other folder and added cryptolib as a dependency.

The conversion was probably not successful. The only thing that was successful was the running of VCUpgrade. The actual conversion itself failed but you don't know until you experience the errors you are seeing. For some of the details, see Visual Studio on the Crypto++ wiki.


Any ideas how to fix this?

To resolve your issues, you should download vs2010.zip if you want static C/C++ runtime linking (/MT or /MTd), or vs2010-dynamic.zip if you want dynamic C/C++ runtime linking (/MT or /MTd). Both fix the latent, silent failures produced by VCUpgrade.


vs2010.zip, vs2010-dynamic.zip and vs2005-dynamic.zip are built from the latest GitHub sources. As of this writing (JUN 1 2016), that's effectively pre-Crypto++ 5.6.4. If you are using the ZIP files with a down level Crypto++, like 5.6.2 or 5.6.3, then you will run into minor problems.

There are two minor problems I am aware. First is a rename of bench.cpp to bench1.cpp. Its error is either:

  • C1083: Cannot open source file: 'bench1.cpp': No such file or directory
  • LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "void __cdecl OutputResultOperations(char const *,char const *,bool,unsigned long,double)" (?OutputResultOperations@@YAXPBD0_NKN@Z)

The fix is to either (1) open cryptest.vcxproj in notepad, find bench1.cpp, and then rename it to bench.cpp. Or (2) rename bench.cpp to bench1.cpp on the filesystem. Please don't delete this file.

The second problem is a little trickier because its a moving target. Down level releases, like 5.6.2 or 5.6.3, are missing the latest classes available in GitHub. The missing class files include HKDF (5.6.3), RDRAND (5.6.3), RDSEED (5.6.3), ChaCha (5.6.4), BLAKE2 (5.6.4), Poly1305 (5.6.4), etc.

The fix is to remove the missing source files from the Visual Studio project files since they don't exist for the down level releases.

Another option is to add the missing class files from the latest sources, but there could be complications. For example, many of the sources subtly depend upon the latest config.h, cpu.h and cpu.cpp. The "subtlety" is you won't realize you are getting an under-performing class.

An example of under-performing class is BLAKE2. config.h adds compile time ARM-32 and ARM-64 detection. cpu.h and cpu.cpp adds runtime ARM instruction detection, which depends upon compile time detection. If you add BLAKE2 without the other files, then none of the detection occurs and you get a straight C/C++ implementation. You probably won't realize you are missing the NEON opportunity, which runs around 9 to 12 cycles-per-byte versus 40 cycles-per-byte or so for vanilla C/C++.

How to convert these strange characters? (ë, Ã, ì, ù, Ã)

Even though utf8_decode is a useful solution, I prefer to correct the encoding errors on the table itself. In my opinion it is better to correct the bad characters themselves than making "hacks" in the code. Simply do a replace on the field on the table. To correct the bad encoded characters from OP :

update <table> set <field> = replace(<field>, "ì", "ì")
update <table> set <field> = replace(<field>, "ù", "ù")

Where <table> is the name of the mysql table and <field> is the name of the column in the table. Here is a very good check-list for those typically bad encoded windows-1252 to utf-8 characters -> Debugging Chart Mapping Windows-1252 Characters to UTF-8 Bytes to Latin-1 Characters.

Remember to backup your table before trying to replace any characters with SQL!

I found that the direct cause for the error in my case was:

build -> advanced -> language version

this makes sense since the error is stating that there is an invalid option for language.

but, this was working fine before - so it must've been selected. what changed? turns out a member on my team upgraded to vs 2017, while i was still using 2015. after he made changes to the project, the language version was changed and i received that change over source control. but the version selected was not available to my version of vs, so it was blank - hence the error. after selecting a value in the language drop down (i chose default), a new error popped up. the new error was causing a build failure on any lines of code which used the newer version of c#. i changed the code to perform the same functions, but with my c# version syntax and problem solved.

so while the direct cause of the error was indeed an invalid selection of Language Version, the root cause was due to different vs/c# versions conflicting.

Using a scanner to accept String input and storing in a String Array

One of the problem with this code is here :

name += contactName[];

This instruction won't insert anything in the array. Instead it will concatenate the current value of the variable name with the string representation of the contactName array.

Instead use this:

contactName[index] = name;

this instruction will store the variable name in the contactName array at the index index.

The second problem you have is that you don't have the variable index.

What you can do is a loop with 12 iterations to fill all your arrays. (and index will be your iteration variable)

For me this issue went away by defining the imagetype to PNG.

Remember that whatever CSS overrides you define must be the same CSS specificity or greater in order to properly override Bootstrap's CSS.

The Navbar is transparent by default. If you only want to change the background color, it can be done simply by applying the color to the <navbar class="bg-custom">, but remember that won't change the other colors such as the links, hover and dropdown menu colors.

Rather than using sub queries in where condition which will increase the query time where records are huge.

I would suggest to use Inner Join as a better option to this problem.

In practice, this almost always happens due to large scans over big tables. It almost never happens in queries that use indexes efficiently.

If your query is like this:

, check that you have a composite index on (col1, col_primary_key).

If you don't have one, then you'll need either a full INDEX SCAN if the PRIMARY KEY is chosen, or a SORT if an index on col1 is chosen.

Both of them are very disk I/O consuming operations on large tables.

Git: How to pull a single file from a server repository in Git?

This scenario comes up when you -- or forces greater than you -- have mangled a file in your local repo and you just want to restore a fresh copy of the latest version of it from the repo. Simply deleting the file with /bin/rm (not git rm) or renaming/hiding it and then issuing a git pull will not work: git notices the file's absence and assumes you probably want it gone from the repo (git diff will show all lines deleted from the missing file).

git pull not restoring locally missing files has always frustrated me about git, perhaps since I have been influenced by other version control systems (e.g. svn update which I believe will restore files that have been locally hidden).

git reset --hard HEAD is an alternative way to restore the file of interest as it throws away any uncommitted changes you have. However, as noted here, git reset is is a potentially dangerous command if you have any other uncommitted changes that you care about.

The git fetch ... git checkout strategy noted above by @chrismillah is a nice surgical way to restore the file in question.

Angular 2 change event - model changes

That's a known issue. Currently you have to use a workaround like shown in your question.

#!/bin/bash

It's not 100% portable (some systems place bash in a location other than /bin), but the fact that a lot of existing scripts use #!/bin/bash pressures various operating systems to make /bin/bash at least a symlink to the main location.

The alternative of:

#!/usr/bin/env bash

has been suggested -- but there's no guarantee that the env command is in /usr/bin (and I've used systems where it isn't). Furthermore, this form will use the first instance of bash in the current users $PATH, which might not be a suitable version of the bash shell.

(But /usr/bin/env should work on any reasonably modern system, either because env is in /usr/bin or because the system does something to make it work. The system I referred to above was SunOS 4, which I probably haven't used in about 25 years.)

If you need a script to run on a system that doesn't have /bin/bash, you can modify the script to point to the correct location (that's admittedly inconvenient).

A somewhat obscure update: One system I use, Termux, a desktop-Linux-like layer that runs under Android, doesn't have /bin/bash (bash is /data/data/com.termux/files/usr/bin/bash) -- but it has special handling to support #!/bin/bash.

JavaFX - create custom button with image

There are a few different ways to accomplish this, I'll outline my favourites.

Use a ToggleButton and apply a custom style to it. I suggest this because your required control is "like a toggle button" but just looks different from the default toggle button styling.

My preferred method is to define a graphic for the button in css:

Some advantages of doing this are:

  1. You get the default toggle button behavior and don't have to re-implement it yourself by adding your own focus styling, mouse and key handlers etc.
  2. If your app gets ported to different platform such as a mobile device, it will work out of the box responding to touch events rather than mouse events, etc.
  3. Your styling is separated from your application logic so it is easier to restyle your application.

An alternate is to not use css and still use a ToggleButton, but set the image graphic in code:

Tools: replace not replacing in Android manifest

I just experienced the same behavior of tools:replace=... as described by the OP.

It turned out that the root cause for tools:replace being ignored by the manifest merger is a bug described here. It basically means that if you have a library in your project that contains a manifest with an <application ...> node containing a tools:ignore=... attribute, it can happen that the tools:replace=... attribute in the manifest of your main module will be ignored.

The tricky point here is that it can happen, but does not have to. In my case I had two libraries, library A with the tools:ignore=... attribute, library B with the attributes to be replaced in the respective manifests and the tools:replace=... attribute in the manifest of the main module. If the manifest of B was merged into the main manifest before the manifest of A everything worked as expected. In opposite merge order the error appeared.

The order in which these merges happen seems to be somewhat random. In my case changing the order in the dependencies section of build.gradle had no effect but changing the name of the flavor did it.

So, the only reliable workaround seems to be to unpack the problem causing library, remove the tools:ignore=... tag (which should be no problem as it is a hint for lint only) and pack the library again.

And vote for the bug to be fixed, of cause.

This might not be the exact thing you are looking for, but you can create a very similar effect by using rgba in combination with linear-gradient:

This creates a linear-gradient from black with 50% opacity (rgba(0,0,0,.5)) to transparent (rgba(0,0,0,0)) which starts being competently transparent 30% from the top. You can have it on a different side by adding a deg-value (linear-gradient(90deg, rgba(0,0,0,.5) 0%, rgba(0,0,0,0) 30%)) or switching the colors around. If you want really complex shadows like different angles on different sides you could even start layering linear-gradient.

You shouldn't use float unless you have to. In 99% of cases, double is a better choice.

Following @Matt's comment.

float has very little precision (6-7 digits) and shows significant rounding error fairly easily. double has another 9 digits of accuracy. The cost of using double instead of float is notional in 99% of cases however the cost of a subtle bug due to rounding error is much higher. For this reason, many developers recommend not using floating point at all and strongly recommend BigDecimal.

However I find that double can be used in most cases provided sensible rounding is used.

In this case, int x has 32-bit precision whereas float has a 24-bit precision, even dividing by 1 could have a rounding error. double on the other hand has 53-bit of precision which is more than enough to get a reasonably accurate result.

How to change max_allowed_packet size

If getting this error while performing a backup, max_allowed_packet can be set in the my.cnf particularly for mysqldump.

The "Lines" property of a TextBox is an array of strings. By definition, you cannot add elements to an existing string[], like you can to a List<string>. There is simply no method available for the purpose. You must instead create a new string[] based on the current Lines reference, and assign it to Lines.

Using a little Linq (.NET 3.5 or later):

This code is fine for adding one new line at a time based on user interaction, but for initializing a textbox with a few dozen new lines, it will perform very poorly. That chart is not showing percents. "#90" is not "90%". That chart shows the hexadecimal to decimal conversion. The hex number 90 (typically represented as 0x90) is equivalent to the decimal number 144.

Hexadecimal numbers are base-16, so each digit is a value between 0 and F. The maximum value for a two byte hex value (such as the transparency of a color) is 0xFF, or 255 in decimal. Thus 100% is 0xFF.

Best practices for API versioning?

This is a good and a tricky question. The topic of URI design is at the same time the most prominent part of a REST API and, therefore, a potentially long-term commitment towards the users of that API.

Since evolution of an application and, to a lesser extent, its API is a fact of life and that it's even similar to the evolution of a seemingly complex product like a programming language, the URI design should have less natural constraints and it should be preserved over time. The longer the application's and API's lifespan, the greater the commitment to the users of the application and API.

On the other hand, another fact of life is that it is hard to foresee all the resources and their aspects that would be consumed through the API. Luckily, it is not necessary to design the entire API which will be used until Apocalypse. It is sufficient to correctly define all the resource end-points and the addressing scheme of every resource and resource instance.

Over time you may need to add new resources and new attributes to each particular resource, but the method that API users follow to access a particular resources should not change once a resource addressing scheme becomes public and therefore final.

This method applies to HTTP verb semantics (e.g. PUT should always update/replace) and HTTP status codes that are supported in earlier API versions (they should continue to work so that API clients that have worked without human intervention should be able to continue to work like that).

Furthermore, since embedding of API version into the URI would disrupt the concept of hypermedia as the engine of application state (stated in Roy T. Fieldings PhD dissertation) by having a resource address/URI that would change over time, I would conclude that API versions should not be kept in resource URIs for a long time meaning that resource URIs that API users can depend on should be permalinks.

Sure, it is possible to embed API version in base URI but only for reasonable and restricted uses like debugging a API client that works with the the new API version. Such versioned APIs should be time-limited and available to limited groups of API users (like during closed betas) only. Otherwise, you commit yourself where you shouldn't.

A couple of thoughts regarding maintenance of API versions that have expiration date on them. All programming platforms/languages commonly used to implement web services (Java, .NET, PHP, Perl, Rails, etc.) allow easy binding of web service end-point(s) to a base URI. This way it's easy to gather and keep a collection of files/classes/methods separate across different API versions.

From the API users POV, it's also easier to work with and bind to a particular API version when it's this obvious but only for limited time, i.e. during development.

From the API maintainer's POV, it's easier to maintain different API versions in parallel by using source control systems that predominantly work on files as the smallest unit of (source code) versioning.

However, with API versions clearly visible in URI there's a caveat: one might also object this approach since API history becomes visible/aparent in the URI design and therefore is prone to changes over time which goes against the guidelines of REST. I agree!

The way to go around this reasonable objection, is to implement the latest API version under versionless API base URI. In this case, API client developers can choose to either:

  • develop against the latest one (committing themselves to maintain the application protecting it from eventual API changes that might break their badly designed API client).

  • bind to a specific version of the API (which becomes apparent) but only for a limited time

For example, if API v3.0 is the latest API version, the following two should be aliases (i.e. behave identically to all API requests):

This status code can be used to indicate an obsolete/unsupported API version, informing API client that a versioned resource URI been replaced by a resource permalink.

  • 302 Found indicating that the requested resource temporarily is located at another location, while requested URI may still supported. This status code may be useful when the version-less URIs are temporarily unavailable and that a request should be repeated using the redirection address (e.g. pointing to the URI with APi version embedded) and we want to tell clients to keep using it (i.e. the permalinks).

git clone through ssh

Git 101:

git is a decentralized version control system. You do not necessary need a server to get up and running with git. Still you might want to do that as it looks cool, right? (It's also useful if you want to work on a single project from multiple computers.)

So to get a "server" running you need to run git init --bare <your_project>.git as this will create an empty repository, which you can then import on your machines without having to muck around in config files in your .git dir.

After this you could clone the repo on your clients as it is supposed to work, but I found that some clients (namely git-gui) will fail to clone a repo that is completely empty. To work around this you need to run cd <your_project>.git && touch <some_random_file> && git add <some_random_file> && git commit && git push origin master. (Note that you might need to configure your username and email for that machine's git if you hadn't done so in the past. The actual commands to run will be in the error message you get so I'll just omit them.)

So at this point you can clone the repository to any machine simply by running git clone <user>@<server>:<relative_path><your_project>.git. (As others have pointed out you might need to prefix it with ssh:// if you use the absolute path.) This assumes that you can already log in from your client to the server. (You'll also get bonus points for setting up a config file and keys for ssh, if you intend to push a lot of stuff to the remote server.)

Android Camera Preview Stretched

OK, so I think there is no sufficient answer for general camera preview stretching problem. Or at least I didn't find one. My app also suffered this stretching syndrome and it took me a while to puzzle together a solution from all the user answers on this portal and internet.

I tried @Hesam's solution but it didn't work and left my camera preview majorly distorted.

My commentary:

The point of all this is, that although you calculate the optimal camera size in getOptimalPreviewSize() you only pick the closest ratio to fit your screen. So unless the ratio is exactly the same the preview will stretch.

Why will it stretch? Because your FrameLayout camera preview is set in layout.xml to match_parent in width and height. So that is why the preview will stretch to full screen.

What needs to be done is to set camera preview layout width and height to match the chosen camera size ratio, so the preview keeps its aspect ratio and won't distort.

I tried to use the CameraPreview class to do all the calculations and layout changes, but I couldn't figure it out. I tried to apply this solution, but SurfaceView doesn't recognize getChildCount () or getChildAt (int index). I think, I got it working eventually with a reference to maLayoutPreview, but it was misbehaving and applied the set ratio to my whole app and it did so after first picture was taken. So I let it go and moved the layout modifications to the MainActivity.

In CameraPreview I changed prSupportedPreviewSizes and getOptimalPreviewSize() to public so I can use it in MainActivity. Then I needed the display dimensions (minus the navigation/status bar if there is one) and chosen optimal camera size. I tried to get the RelativeLayout (or FrameLayout) size instead of display size, but it was returning zero value. This solution didn't work for me. The layout got it's value after onWindowFocusChanged (checked in the log).

So I have my methods for calculating the layout dimensions to match the aspect ratio of chosen camera size. Now you just need to set LayoutParams of your camera preview layout. Change the width, height and center it in parent.

There are two choices how to calculate the preview dimensions. Either you want it to fit the screen with black bars (if windowBackground is set to null) on the sides or top/bottom. Or you want the preview zoomed to full screen. I left comment with more information in calcCamPrevDimensions().

Be aware that the function File.GetLastWriteTime does not always work as expected, the values are sometimes not instantaneously updated by the OS. You may get an old Timestamp, even if the file has been modified right before.

a) live with the occasional omissions.

b) Build up an active component realising the observer pattern (eg. a tcp server client structure), communicating the changes directly instead of writing / reading files. Fast and flexible, but another dependency and a possible point of failure (and some work, of course).

c) Ensure the signalling process by replacing the content of a dedicated signal file that other processes regularly read. It´s not that smart as it´s a polling procedure and has a greater overhead than calling File.GetLastWriteTime, but if not checking the content from too many places too often, it will do the work.

What are FTL files

An ftl file could just have a series of html tags just as a JSP page or it can have freemarker template coding for representing the objects passed on from a controller java file.

DateTime Picker can be used to pick both date and time that is why it is called 'Date and Time Picker'. You can set the "Format" property to "Custom" and set combination of different format specifiers to represent/pick date/time in different formats in the "Custom Format" property. However if you want to change Date, then the pop-up calendar can be used whereas in case of Time selection (in the same control you are bound to use up/down keys to change values.

You can play around with different combinations for format specifiers to suit your need e.g MMMM will give "August" whereas MM will give "Aug"

Regarding int main():

According to the Standard, argv points to a NULL-terminated array (of pointers to null-terminated strings). (5.1.2.2.1:1).

That is, argv = (char **){ argv[0], ..., argv[argc - 1], 0 };.

Hence, size calculation is performed by a function which is a trivial modification of strlen().

argc is only there to make argv length calculation O(1).

The count-until-NULL method will NOT work for generic array input. You will need to manually specify size as a second argument.

Comparing arrays in C#

I know this is an old topic, but I think it is still relevant, and would like to share an implementation of an array comparison method which I feel strikes the right balance between performance and elegance.

System not declared in scope?

Chances are that you've not included the header file that declares system().

In order to be able to compile C++ code that uses functions which you don't (manually) declare yourself, you have to pull in the declarations. These declarations are normally stored in so-called header files that you pull into the current translation unit using the #include preprocessor directive. As the code does not #include the header file in which system() is declared, the compilation fails.

To fix this issue, find out which header file provides you with the declaration of system() and include that. As mentioned in several other answers, you most likely want to add #include <cstdlib>

Apache doesn't support SSL on name-based virtual host, only on IP based Virtual Hosts.

Unlike SSL, the TLS specification allows for name-based hosts (SNI as mentioned by someone else), but Apache doesn't yet support this feature. It supposedly will in a future release when compiled against openssl 0.9.8.

Also, mod_gnutls claims to support SNI, but I've never actually tried it.

The property 'value' does not exist on value of type 'HTMLElement'

Based on Tomasz Nurkiewiczs answer, the "problem" is that typescript is typesafe. :) So the document.getElementById() returns the type HTMLElement which does not contain a value property. The subtype HTMLInputElement does however contain the value property.

So a solution is to cast the result of getElementById() to HTMLInputElement like this:

If you need to take grapheme clusters into account, use regexp or unicode module. Counting the number of code points(runes) or bytes also is needed for validaiton since the length of grapheme cluster is unlimited. First, don't use * in select, affects their performance and hinder the use of the group by and order by. Try this query:

You are right. This is a badly documented issue. But you can change the font size parameter (by opposition to font scale) directly after building the plot. Check the following example:

Android: Pass data(extras) to a fragment

Two things. First I don't think you are adding the data that you want to pass to the fragment correctly. What you need to pass to the fragment is a bundle, not an intent. For example if I wanted send an int value to a fragment I would create a bundle, put the int into that bundle, and then set that bundle as an argument to be used when the fragment was created.

Second to retrieve that information you need to get the arguments sent to the fragment. You then extract the value based on the key you identified it with. For example in your fragment:

What you are getting changes depending on what you put. Also the default value is usually null but does not need to be. It depends on if you set a default value for that argument.

Lastly I do not think you can do this in onCreateView. I think you must retrieve this data within your fragment's onActivityCreated method. My reasoning is as follows. onActivityCreated runs after the underlying activity has finished its own onCreate method. If you are placing the information you wish to retrieve within the bundle durring your activity's onCreate method, it will not exist during your fragment's onCreateView. Try using this in onActivityCreated and just update your ListView contents later.

If you have enough memory, I've found some performance gains by reading the entire file into a memory stream, and then opening a stream reader on that to read the lines. As long as you actually plan on reading the whole file anyway, this can yield some improvements.

Remember one thing: if any function's return condition gets satisfied, no matter it has loaded the local variables or not, it will immediately return from stack with it's stack frame. It means that whenever any recursive function get base condition satisfied and we put a return after base condition, the base condition will not wait to load local variables which are located in the “else” part of program. It will immediately return the current frame from the stack following which the next frame is now in the activation record.

Have in mind that the path where you want to refer to, it takes your baseUrl as the base of the route you are pointing to and it's mandatory as described on the doc.

The character '@' is not mandatory.

After you set it up on that way, you can easily use it like this:

the only thing you might notice is that the intellisense does not work in the current latest version, so I would suggest to follow an index convention for importing/exporting files.

and you got

then you have uninstalled pip instead install pip. This could be the reason of your problem.

String contains - ignore case

You can use

org.apache.commons.lang3.StringUtils.containsIgnoreCase(CharSequence str,
                                     CharSequence searchStr);

Checks if CharSequence contains a search CharSequence irrespective of case, handling null. Case-insensitivity is defined as by String.equalsIgnoreCase(String).

A null CharSequence will return false.

This one will be better than regex as regex is always expensive in terms of performance.

  • don't want to use Apache commons library
  • don't want to go with the expensive regex/Pattern based solutions,
  • don't want to create additional string object by using toLowerCase,

you can implement your own custom containsIgnoreCase using java.lang.String.regionMatches

Printing tuple with string formatting in Python

Try this to get an answer:

>>>d = ('1', '2') 
>>> print("Value: %s" %(d))
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: not all arguments converted during string formatting

If we put only-one tuple inside (), it makes a tuple itself:

>>> (d)
('1', '2')

This means the above print statement will look like: print("Value: %s" %('1', '2')) which is an error!

Hence:

>>> (d,)
(('1', '2'),)
>>> 

Above will be fed correctly to the print's arguments.
