CodeIgniter: Create new helper?

To create a new helper you can follow the instructions from The Pixel Developer, but my advice is not to create a helper just for the logic required by a particular part of a particular application. Instead, use that logic in the controller to set the arrays to their final intended values. Once you got that, you pass them to the view using the Template Parser Class and (hopefully) you can keep the view clean from anything that looks like PHP using simple variables or variable tag pairs instead of echos and foreachs. i.e:

I am not too sure, but you could try using a horizontal rule and pushing the text above its top margin. You will need a fixed width on your paragraph tag and a background too. It's a little hacky and I don't know if it will work on all browsers, and you need to set the negative margin based on the size of the font. Works on chrome though.

I did it this way. Firstly, don't push your changes or you are out of luck. Grab and install the collapse extension. Commit another dummy changeset. Then use collapse to combine the previous two changesets into one. It will prompt you for a new commit message, giving you the messages that you already have as a starting point. Android 2.0 and above onCreate of service is not invoked when started automatically (source). Instead onStartCommand is overridden and used. But in actual FirebaseInstanceIdService it is declared as final and can't be overridden. However, when we start service using startService(), if service is already running, its original instance is used (which is good). Our onCreate() (defined above) also got invoked!.

Use this in begining of MainActivity or at whichever point you think you need instance id.

What exactly does the "u" do? "git push -u origin master" vs "git push origin master"

In more simple terms:

Technically, the -u flag adds a tracking reference to the upstream server you are pushing to.

What is important here is that this lets you do a git pull without supplying any more arguments. For example, once you do a git push -u origin master, you can later call git pull and git will know that you actually meant git pull origin master.

Otherwise, you'd have to type in the whole command.

I had this problem today, and all one-liners here failed to me because the files contained spaces in the names.

Well, I can think of a CSS hack that will resolve this issue.

You could add the following line in your CSS file:

The above code will only be seen by IE6. The aspect ratio won't be perfect, but you could make it look somewhat normal. If you really wanted to make it perfect, you would need to write some javascript that would read the original picture width, and set the ratio accordingly to specify a height.

This is a very simple code I use and you manipulate it to change the colour and size of the table as you see fit.

It's a very elementary piece of code but it helps if you are not used to using functions.

VBA: Conditional - Is Nothing

Just becuase your class object has no variables does not mean that it is nothing. Declaring and object and creating an object are two different things. Look and see if you are setting/creating the object.

Take for instance the dictionary object - just because it contains no variables does not mean it has not been created.

Build error: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

Well, I solved the problem myself - though I still have no clue why. I decided to isolate the problem by removing all files from the project, then re-adding them and determining that way which file was the source of my trouble. So, one by one I reintroduced files to the project, compiled & cleaned each step of the way... until... I added the last one...

... and everything still worked fine.

I did a compare to the source control of my original .csproj; no real differences. And even when I tried reverting to the previous version of the .csproj, it still worked.

Black magic. If it works, sometimes it's better not to ask why - just accept it and move on...

EDIT: The problem is a recurring one, and I believe I've isolated it to when I have the form designer open of an abstract/generic form at compile time.

Lesson learned: Make sure the Form Designer of any abstract or generic forms or controls is closed before you compile! If not, you have to close VS and reopen!

jquery .live('click') vs .click()

Always use click if you not dynamically add elements.

live works by adding an event listener to the document root and listens for bubbled up events. An alternative is delegate, which works the same, but binds the event handler to the specified element.
This way, the event has not to bubble up the whole DOM and is caught earlier.

What causes the error "undefined reference to (some function)"?

It's a linker error. ld is the linker, so if you get an error message ending with "ld returned 1 exit status", that tells you that it's a linker error.

The error message tells you that none of the object files you're linking against contains a definition for avergecolumns. The reason for that is that the function you've defined is called averagecolumns (in other words: you misspelled the function name when calling the function (and presumably in the header file as well - otherwise you'd have gotten a different error at compile time)).

Full re-render, which would destroy and reinitialize component (calling all lifecycle hooks and rebuilding view) can be done by using ng-template, ng-container and ViewContainerRef in following way:

Gotta love those six different caught exceptions :). There are certainly some refactoring to simplify the code a bit. But, I like delfuego's -D options on the VM. I wish there was a javax.net.ssl.trustStore static property that I could just set. Just two lines of code and done. Anyone know where that would be?

This may be too much to ask, but, ideally the keytool would not be used. Instead, the trustedStore would be created dynamically by the code and the cert is added at runtime.

There must be a better answer.

JCheckbox - ActionListener and ItemListener?

The difference is that ActionEvent is fired when the action is performed on the JCheckBox that is its state is changed either by clicking on it with the mouse or with a space bar or a mnemonic. It does not really listen to change events whether the JCheckBox is selected or deselected.

For instance, if JCheckBox c1 (say) is added to a ButtonGroup. Changing the state of other JCheckBoxes in the ButtonGroup will not fire an ActionEvent on other JCheckBox, instead an ItemEvent is fired.

Final words: An ItemEvent is fired even when the user deselects a check box by selecting another JCheckBox (when in a ButtonGroup), however ActionEvent is not generated like that instead ActionEvent only listens whether an action is performed on the JCheckBox (to which the ActionListener is registered only) or not. It does not know about ButtonGroup and all other selection/deselection stuff.

How to change the value of ${user} variable used in Eclipse templates

One would expect creating or changing template variables on a project-, workspace-, or environment-basis is a standard Eclipse feature. Sadly, it is not. More so, given that Eclipse plugins can define new variables and templates, there should be plugins out there providing a solution. If they are, they must be hard to find. mmm-TemplateVariable, which is available in the Eclipse Marketplace, is a step in the right direction for Maven users, giving the ability to include version, artifactId, etc. in templates.

Fortunately, EGit, which is an Eclipse tool for Git, provides very flexible means for including many different variables in code templates. The only requirement is that your project uses Git. If you don’t use Git, but are serious about software development, now is the time to learn (Pro Git book). If you are forced to use a legacy version control system, try changing some minds.

Thanks to the efforts of harmsk, EGit 4.0 and above includes the ability to use Git configuration key values in templates. This allows setting template values based on repository settings (project), user settings (account), and/or global settings (workstation).

The following example shows how to set up Eclipse and Git for a multi-user development workstation and use a custom Git configuration key in lieu of ${user} to provide more flexibility. Although the example is based on a Windows 10 installation of Eclipse Mars and Git for Windows, the example is applicable to Linux and OSX running Eclipse and Git using their respective command line tools.

To avoid possible confusion between Git’s user.name configuration key and Java’s user.name system property, a custom Git configuration key – user.author – will be used to provide an author’s name and/or credentials.

Configuring Templates

The format of a Git template variable is as follows

where <name> is any arbitrary variable name and <key> is the Git configuration key whose value should be used. Given that, changing the Comments?Types template to

From the command line

Git System Configuration - This configuration step makes changes to Git’s system-wide configuration applicable to all accounts on the workstation unless overridden by user or repository settings. Because system-wide configurations are part the underlying Git application (e.g. Git for Windows), changes will require Administrator privileges. Run Git Bash, cmd, or PowerShell as Administrator. The following command will set the system-wide author.

The purpose of this “author” is to serve as a reminder that it should be set elsewhere. This is particularly useful when new user accounts are being used on the workstation.

To verify this setting, create an empty Java project that uses Git or open an existing Git-based project. Create a class and use Source?Generate Element Comment from the context menu, ALT-SHIFT-J, or start a JavaDoc comment. The resulting @author tag should be followed by the warning.

The remaining configuration changes can be performed without Administrator privileges.

Git Global(User) Configuration - Global, or user, configurations are those associated with a specific user and will override system-wide configurations. These settings apply to all Git-based projects unless overridden by repository settings. In my case, the solution was to make every directory in the directory path readable and accessible by mysql (chmod a+rx). The directory was still specified by its relative path in the command line.

Note that without nextLine(), the bad input will trigger the same exception repeatedly in an infinite loop. You might want to use next() instead depending on the circumstance, but know that input like this has spaces will generate multiple exceptions.

When is layoutSubviews called?

I tracked the solution down to Interface Builder's insistence that springs cannot be changed on a view that has the simulated screen elements turned on (status bar, etc.). Since the springs were off for the main view, that view could not change size and hence was scrolled down in its entirety when the in-call bar appeared.

Turning the simulated features off, then resizing the view and setting the springs correctly caused the animation to occur and my method to be called.

An extra problem in debugging this is that the simulator quits the app when the in-call status is toggled via the menu. Quit app = no debugger.

decimal vs double! - Which one should I use and when?

My question is when should a use a double and when should I use a decimal type?

decimal for when you work with values in the range of 10^(+/-28) and where you have expectations about the behaviour based on base 10 representations - basically money.

double for when you need relative accuracy (i.e. losing precision in the trailing digits on large values is not a problem) across wildly different magnitudes - double covers more than 10^(+/-300). Scientific calculations are the best example here.

The most important factor is that double, being implemented as a binary fraction, cannot accurately represent many decimal fractions (like 0.1) at all and its overall number of digits is smaller since it is 64-bit wide vs. 128-bit for decimal. Finally, financial applications often have to follow specific rounding modes (sometimes mandated by law). decimal supports these; double does not.

You have two typing errors in your code:

and after the printf() parenthesis you need a semicolon.

Also, depending on the compiler, so simple a cycle might just be optimized out, giving you a time of 0 microseconds whatever you do.

Finally, the time calculation is wrong. You only take into accounts the seconds, ignoring the microseconds. You need to get the difference between seconds, multiply by one million, then add "after" tv_usec and subtract "before" tv_usec. You gain nothing by casting an integer number of seconds to a float.

I'd suggest checking out the man page for struct timeval.

  • find: the unix command for finding files / directories / links etc.

  • rm -rf {}: recursively force remove the directory; the {} part is where the find result gets substituted into from the previous part.

Alternatively, use:

Which is a bit more efficient, because it amounts to:

With modern versions of find, you can replace the ; with + and it will do the equivalent of the xargs call for you, passing as many files as will fit on each exec system call:

Just use that mac's Keychain Access application to export both the certificate and the private key. Select both using shift or command and right click to export to a .p12 file.

Visual Studio Code Automatic Imports

I got this working by installing the various plugins below.

Most of the time things just import by themselves as soon as I type the class name. Alternatively, a lightbulb appears that you can click on. Or you can push F1, and type "import..." and there are various options there too. I kinda use all of them. Also F1 Implement for implementing an interface is helpful, but doesn't always work.

It most likely means the hostname can't be resolved.

If it doesn't work there, it's not going to work in the Bottle example. You can try '127.0.0.1' instead of 'localhost' in case that's the problem.

grep a tab in UNIX

There are basically two ways to address it:

  1. (Recommended) Use regular expression syntax supported by grep(1). Modern grep(1) supports two forms of POSIX 1003.2 regex syntax: basic (obsolete) REs, and modern REs. Syntax is described in details on re_format(7) and regex(7) man pages which are part of BSD and Linux systems respectively. The GNU grep(1) also supports Perl-compatible REs as provided by the pcre(3) library.

    In regex language the tab symbol is usually encoded by \t atom. The atom is supported by BSD extended regular expressions (egrep, grep -E on BSD compatible system), as well as Perl-compatible REs (pcregrep, GNU grep -P).

    Both basic regular expressions and Linux extended REs apparently have no support for the \t. Please consult UNIX utility man page to know which regex language it supports (hence the difference between sed(1), awk(1), and pcregrep(1) regular expressions).

    Therefore, on Linux:

    $ grep -P '\t' FILE ...
    

    On BSD alike system:

    $ egrep '\t' FILE ...
    $ grep -E '\t' FILE ...
    
  2. Pass the tab character into pattern. This is straightforward when you edit a script file:

    However, when working in an interactive shell you may need to rely on shell and terminal capabilities to type the proper symbol into the line. On most terminals this can be done through Ctrl+V key combination which instructs terminal to treat the next input character literally (the V is for "verbatim"):

    Some shells may offer advanced support for command typesetting. Such, in bash(1) words of the form $'string' are treated specially:

UIView's frame, bounds, center, origin, when to use what?

Marco's answer above is correct, but just to expand on the question of "under what context"...

frame - this is the property you most often use for normal iPhone applications. most controls will be laid out relative to the "containing" control so the frame.origin will directly correspond to where the control needs to display, and frame.size will determine how big to make the control.

center - this is the property you will likely focus on for sprite based games and animations where movement or scaling may occur. By default animation and rotation will be based on the center of the UIView. It rarely makes sense to try and manage such objects by the frame property.

bounds - this property is not a positioning property, but defines the drawable area of the UIView "relative" to the frame. By default this property is usually (0, 0, width, height). Changing this property will allow you to draw outside of the frame or restrict drawing to a smaller area within the frame. A good discussion of this can be found at the link below. It is uncommon for this property to be manipulated unless there is specific need to adjust the drawing region. The only exception is that most programs will use the [[UIScreen mainScreen] bounds] on startup to determine the visible area for the application and setup their initial UIView's frame accordingly.

Continuous Integration vs. Continuous Delivery vs. Continuous Deployment

Continuous Integration

I Agree with your university's definition. Continuous Integration is a strategy for how a developer can integrate code to the mainline continuously - as opposed to frequently.

You might claim that it's merely a branching strategy in your version control system.

It has to do with the size of the tasks you assign to a developer; If a task is estimated to take 4-5 man-days then the developer will have no incitement to deliver anything for the next 4-5 days, because he's not done with anything - yet.

So size matters:

small task = continuous integration
big task   = frequent integration

The ideal task size is not bigger than a day's work. This way a developer will naturally have at least one integration per day.

Continuous Delivery

There are basically three schools within Continuous Delivery:

Continuous Delivery is a natural extension of Continuous Integration

This school, looks at the Addison-Wesley "Martin Fowler" signature series and makes the assumption that since the 2007 release was called "Continuous Integration" and the one that followed in 2011 was called "Continuous Delivery" they are probably volume 1+2 of the same conceptual idea that has to do with continuous something.

Continuous Delivery has to do with Agile Software Development

This school takes off-set in the idea that Continuous Delivery is all about being able to support the principles in the agile movement, not just as a conceptual idea or a letter of intent but for real - in real life.

Taking offset in the first principle in the Agile Manifesto where the term "continuous delivery" is actually used for the first time:

Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software.

This school claims that "Continuous Delivery" is a paradigm that embraces everything required to implement an automated verification of your "definition of done".

This school accepts that "Continuous Delivery" and the buzz word or megatrend "DevOps" are flip sides of the same coin, in the sense that they both try to embrace or encapsulate this new paradigm or approach and not just a technique.

Continuous Delivery is a synonym to Continuous Deployment

The third school advocates that Continuous Deployment and Continuous Delivery can be used interchangeably to mean the same thing.

When something is ready in the hands of the developers, it's immediately delivered to the end-users, which in most cases will mean that it should be deployed to the production environment. Hence "Deploy" and "Deliver" means the same.

Which school to join

Your university clearly joined the first school and claims that we're referring to volume 1+2 of the same publication series. My opinion is that this is a misuse of the term Continuous Delivery.

I personally advocate for the understanding that Continuous Delivery is related to implementing a real-life support for the ideas and concepts stated by the agile movement. So I joined the school that says the term embraces a whole paradigm - like "DevOps".

The school that uses delivery as a synonym to deploy is mostly advocated by tool vendors who create deployment consoles, trying to get a bit of hype from the more widespread use of the term Continuous Delivery.

Continuous Deployment

The focus on Continuous Deployment is mostly relevant in domains where the end user's access to software updates relies on the update of some centralized source for this information and where this centralized source is not always easy to update because it's monolithic or has (too) high coherence by nature (web, SOA, Databases etc.).

For a lot of domains that produces software where there is no centralized source of information (devices, consumer products, client installations etc.) or where the centralized source for information is easy to update (app stores artifact management systems, Open Source repositories etc.), there is almost no hype about the term Continuous Deployment at all. They just deploy; it's not a big thing - it's not a pain that requires special focus.

The fact that Continuous Deployment is not something that is generically interesting to everyone is also an argument that the school that claims that "delivery" and "deploy" are synonyms got it all wrong. Because Continuous Delivery actually makes perfectly good sense to everyone - even if you are doing embedded software in devices or releasing Open Source plugins for a framework.

Your university's definition that Continuous Deployment is a natural next step of Continuous Delivery implicitly assumes that every delivery that is QA'ed should go become available to the end-users immediately, is closer to the definition that my tribe use to describe the term "Continous Release", which, in turn, is another concept that doesn't generically makes sense to everyone either.

A release can be a very strategic or political thing and there is no reason to assume that everybody would want to do this all the time (unless they are an online bookstore a streaming service type of company). Nevertheless, companies that don't blindly release everything all the time may have any number of reasons why they would want to be masters of deployment anyway, so they too do Continuous Deployment. Not of release to production, but of release-candidates to production-like environments.

Again I believe your university got it wrong. They are mistaking "Continuous Deployment" for "Continuous Release".

Continuous deployment is simply the discipline of continuously being able to move the result of a development process to a production-like environment where functional testing can be executed in full scale.

The Continuous Delivery Storyline

The Continuous Integration process is the first two actions in the state-transition diagram. which - if successful - kicks off the Continuous Delivery pipeline that implements the definition of done. Deployment is just one of the many actions that will have to be done continuously in this pipeline. Ideally, the process is automated from the point where the developer commits to the VCS to the point where the pipeline has confirmed that we have a valid release candidate.

Why does range(start, end) not include end?

Although there are some useful algorithmic explanations here, I think it may help to add some simple 'real life' reasoning as to why it works this way, which I have found useful when introducing the subject to young newcomers:

With something like 'range(1,10)' confusion can arise from thinking that pair of parameters represents the "start and end".

It is actually start and "stop".

Now, if it were the "end" value then, yes, you might expect that number would be included as the final entry in the sequence. But it is not the "end".

Others mistakenly call that parameter "count" because if you only ever use 'range(n)' then it does, of course, iterate 'n' times. This logic breaks down when you add the start parameter.

So the key point is to remember its name: "stop". That means it is the point at which, when reached, iteration will stop immediately. Not after that point.

So, while "start" does indeed represent the first value to be included, on reaching the "stop" value it 'breaks' rather than continuing to process 'that one as well' before stopping.

One analogy that I have used in explaining this to kids is that, ironically, it is better behaved than kids! It doesn't stop after it supposed to - it stops immediately without finishing what it was doing. (They get this ;) )

Another analogy - when you drive a car you don't pass a stop/yield/'give way' sign and end up with it sitting somewhere next to, or behind, your car. Technically you still haven't reached it when you do stop. It is not included in the 'things you passed on your journey'.

How to perform Unwind segue programmatically?

SWIFT 4:

1. Create an @IBAction with segue inside controller you want to unwind to:

How to cherry pick a range of commits and merge into another branch?

When it comes to a range of commits, cherry-picking is was not practical.

As mentioned below by Keith Kim, Git 1.7.2+ introduced the ability to cherry-pick a range of commits (but you still need to be aware of the consequence of cherry-picking for future merge)

git cherry-pick" learned to pick a range of commits
(e.g. "cherry-pick A..B" and "cherry-pick --stdin"), so did "git revert"; these do not support the nicer sequencing control "rebase [-i]" has, though.

damian comments and warns us:

In the "cherry-pick A..B" form, A should be older than B.
If they're the wrong order the command will silently fail.

If you want to pick the range B through D (including B) that would be B^..D (instead of B..D).
See "Git create branch from range of previous commits?" as an illustration.

As Jubobs mentions in the comments:

This assumes that B is not a root commit; you'll get an "unknown revision" error otherwise.

Note: as of Git 2.9.x/2.10 (Q3 2016), you can cherry-pick a range of commit directly on an orphan branch (empty head): see "How to make existing branch an orphan in git".


Original answer (January 2010)

A rebase --onto would be better, where you replay the given range of commit on top of your integration branch, as Charles Bailey described here.
(also, look for "Here is how you would transplant a topic branch based on one branch to another" in the git rebase man page, to see a practical example of git rebase --onto)

If your current branch is integration:

# Checkout a new temporary branch at the current location
git checkout -b tmp

# Move the integration branch to the head of the new patchset
git branch -f integration last_SHA-1_of_working_branch_range

# Rebase the patchset onto tmp, the old location of integration
git rebase --onto tmp first_SHA-1_of_working_branch_range~1 integration

That will replay everything between:

  • after the parent of first_SHA-1_of_working_branch_range (hence the ~1): the first commit you want to replay
  • up to "integration" (which points to the last commit you want to replay, from the working branch)

to "tmp" (which points to where integration was pointing before)

If there is any conflict when one of those commits is replayed:

  • either solve it and run "git rebase --continue".
  • or skip this patch, and instead run "git rebase --skip"
  • or cancel the all thing with a "git rebase --abort" (and put back the integration branch on the tmp branch)

After that rebase --onto, integration will be back at the last commit of the integration branch (that is "tmp" branch + all the replayed commits)

With cherry-picking or rebase --onto, do not forget it has consequences on subsequent merges, as described here.


A pure "cherry-pick" solution is discussed here, and would involve something like:

If you want to use a patch approach then "git format-patch|git am" and "git cherry" are your options.
Currently, git cherry-pick accepts only a single commit, but if you want to pick the range B through D that would be B^..D in git lingo, so

But anyway, when you need to "replay" a range of commits, the word "replay" should push you to use the "rebase" feature of Git.

How to sort a dataframe by multiple column(s)

I learned about order with the following example which then confused me for a long time:

Below is a generalized way of sorting a data frame by every column without specifying column names. The code below shows how to sort from left to right or by right to left. This works if every column is numeric. I have not tried with a character column added.

The present thread is the first hit for ordering a data.frame in R. So, I thought my expanded version of that original do.call code might be useful.

The reason for this error is that EditorFor already iterates the List for you, so if you pass a collection to it, it would display the editor template once for each item in the collection.

I don't think IE supports the use of auto for setting height / width, so you could try giving this a numeric value (like Jarett suggests).

Parsing HTTP Response in Python

When I printed response.read() I noticed that b was preprended to the string (e.g. b'{"a":1,..). The "b" stands for bytes and serves as a declaration for the type of the object you're handling. Since, I knew that a string could be converted to a dict by using json.loads('string'), I just had to convert the byte type to a string type. I did this by decoding the response to utf-8 decode('utf-8'). Once it was in a string type my problem was solved and I was easily able to iterate over the dict.

I don't know if this is the fastest or most 'pythonic' way of writing this but it works and theres always time later of optimization and improvement! Full code for my solution:

Convert UTF-8 to base64 string

It's a little difficult to tell what you're trying to achieve, but assuming you're trying to get a Base64 string that when decoded is abcdef==, the following should work:

string base64 = Convert.ToBase64String(bytes);
Console.WriteLine(base64);

This will output: YWJjZGVmPT0= which is abcdef== encoded in Base64.

Edit:

To decode a Base64 string, simply use Convert.FromBase64String(). E.g.

At this point, bytes will be a byte[] (not a string). If we know that the byte array represents a string in UTF8, then it can be converted back to the string form using:

Coding Conventions - Naming Enums

This will probably not make me a lot of new friends, but it should be added that the C# people have a different guideline: The enum instances are "Pascal case" (upper/lower case mixed). See stackoverflow discussion and MSDN Enumeration Type Naming Guidelines.

As we are exchanging data with a C# system, I am tempted to copy their enums exactly, ignoring Java's "constants have uppercase names" convention. Thinking about it, I don't see much value in being restricted to uppercase for enum instances. For some purposes .name() is a handy shortcut to get a readable representation of an enum constant and a mixed case name would look nicer.

So, yes, I dare question the value of the Java enum naming convention. The fact that "the other half of the programming world" does indeed use a different style makes me think it is legitimate to doubt our own religion.

Difference between no-cache and must-revalidate

With Jeffrey Fox's interpretation about no-cache, i've tested under chrome 52.0.2743.116 m, the result shows that no-cache has the same behavior as must-revalidate, they all will NOT use local cache when server is unreachable, and, they all will use cache while tap browser's Back/Forward button when server is unreachable. As above, i think max-age=0, must-revalidate is identical to no-cache, at least in implementation.

  5. Under the "IP Addresses" section, set the TCP port under "IP All" (which is 1433 by default).
  6. Under the "IP Addresses" section, find subsections with IP address 127.0.0.1 (for IPv4) and ::1 (for IPv6) and set both "Enabled" and "Active" to "Yes", and TCP port to 1433.

The pyplot functions you are calling, axhline() and axvline() draw lines that span a portion of the axis range, regardless of coordinates. The parameters xmin or ymin use value 0.0 as the minimum of the axis and 1.0 as the maximum of the axis.

Instead, use plt.plot((x1, x2), (y1, y2), 'k-') to draw a line from the point (x1, y1) to the point (x2, y2) in color k. See pyplot.plot.

What's with the dollar sign ($"string")

It's the new feature in C# 6 called Interpolated Strings.

The easiest way to understand it is: an interpolated string expression creates a string by replacing the contained expressions with the ToString representations of the expressions' results.

For more details about this, please take a look at MSDN.

Now, think a little bit more about it. Why this feature is great?

For example, you have class Point:

Create 2 instances:

Now, you want to output it to the screen. The 2 ways that you usually use:

As you can see, concatenating string like this makes the code hard to read and error-prone. You may use string.Format() to make it nicer:

This creates a new problem:

  1. You have to maintain the number of arguments and index yourself. If the number of arguments and index are not the same, it will generate a runtime error.

For those reasons, we should use new feature:

The compiler now maintains the placeholders for you so you don’t have to worry about indexing the right argument because you simply place it right there in the string.

How to install python modules without root access?

You can run easy_install to install python packages in your home directory even without root access. There's a standard way to do this using site.USER_BASE which defaults to something like $HOME/.local or $HOME/Library/Python/2.7/bin and is included by default on the PYTHONPATH

To do this, create a .pydistutils.cfg in your home directory:

What is the .idea folder?

When you use the IntelliJ IDE, all the project-specific settings for the project are stored under the .idea folder.

Project settings are stored with each specific project as a set of xml files under the .idea folder. If you specify the default project settings, these settings will be automatically used for each newly created project.

Check this documentation for the IDE settings and here is their recommendation on Source Control and an example .gitignore file.

Note: If you are using git or some version control system, you might want to set this folder "ignore". Example - for git, add this directory to .gitignore. This way, the application is not IDE-specific.

Creating files in C++

Do this with a file stream. When a std::ofstream is closed, the file is created. I personally like the following code, because the OP only asks to create a file, not to write in it:

Your last for statement is missing a body.

Python expects an indented block to follow the line with the for, or to have content after the colon.

The first style is more common, so it says it expects some indented code to follow it. You have an elif at the same indent level.

Use .clf or .cla on your figure object instead of creating a new figure. From @DavidZwicker

Assuming you have imported pyplot as

plt.cla() clears an axis, i.e. the currently active axis in the current figure. It leaves the other axes untouched.

plt.clf() clears the entire current figure with all its axes, but leaves the window opened, such that it may be reused for other plots.

plt.close() closes a window, which will be the current window, if not specified otherwise. plt.close('all') will close all open figures.

The reason that del fig does not work is that the pyplot state-machine keeps a reference to the figure around (as it must if it is going to know what the 'current figure' is). This means that even if you delete your ref to the figure, there is at least one live ref, hence it will never be garbage collected.

Since I'm polling on the collective wisdom here for this answer, @JoeKington mentions in the comments that plt.close(fig) will remove a specific figure instance from the pylab state machine (plt._pylab_helpers.Gcf) and allow it to be garbage collected.

Using the is or as operators is the correct way if you know the interface type at compile time and have an instance of the type you are testing. Something that no one else seems to have mentioned is Type.IsAssignableFrom:

"Invalid signature file" when attempting to run a .jar

Some of your dependencies are likely signed jarfiles. When you combine them all into one big jarfile, the corresponding signature files are still present, and no longer match the "big combined" jarfile, so the runtime halts thinking the jar file has been tampered with (which it...has so to speak).

Assuming you're using ant, you can solve the problem by eliminating the signature files from your jarfile dependencies. Unfortunately, it's not possible to do this in one step in ant.

However, I was able to get this working with Ant in two steps, without specifically naming each jarfile dependency, by using:

Is your CSS in a stylesheet file or in a <style> block in a page? If it's in a stylesheet then the relative path must be relative to the CSS stylesheet (not the document that references it). If it's in a page then it must be relative to the current resource path. If you're using non-filesystem-based resource paths (i.e. using URL rewriting or URL routing) then this will cause problems and it's best to always use absolute paths.

Going by your relative path it looks like you store your images separately from your stylesheets. I don't think this is a good idea - I support storing images and other resources, like fonts, in the same directory as the stylesheet itself, as it simplifies paths and is also a more logical filesystem arrangement.

You've simply got it backwards. Specifying a minimum width would make the select menu always be at least that width, so it will continue expanding to 90% no matter what the window size is, also being at least the size of its longest option.

You need to use max-width instead. This way, it will let the select menu expand to its longest option, but if that expands past your set maximum of 90% width, crunch it down to that width.
