JavaScript: What are .extend and .prototype used for?

Some extend functions in third party libraries are more complex than others. Knockout.js for instance contains a minimally simple one that doesn't have some of the checks that jQuery's does:

function extend(target, source) {
    if (source) {
        for(var prop in source) {
            if(source.hasOwnProperty(prop)) {
                target[prop] = source[prop];
            }
        }
    }
    return target;
}

adding comment in .properties files

Writing the properties file with multiple comments is not supported. Why ?

PropertyFile.java

public class PropertyFile extends Task {

    /* ========================================================================
     *
     * Instance variables.
     */

    // Use this to prepend a message to the properties file
    private String              comment;

    private Properties          properties;

The ant property file task is backed by a java.util.Properties class which stores comments using the store() method. Only one comment is taken from the task and that is passed on to the Properties class to save into the file.

The way to get around this is to write your own task that is backed by commons properties instead of java.util.Properties. The commons properties file is backed by a property layout which allows settings comments for individual keys in the properties file. Save the properties file with the save() method and modify the new task to accept multiple comments through <comment> elements.

Java NIO: What does IOException: Broken pipe mean?

What causes a "broken pipe", and more importantly, is it possible to recover from that state?

It is caused by something causing the connection to close. (It is not your application that closed the connection: that would have resulted in a different exception.)

It is not possible to recover the connection. You need to open a new one.

If it cannot be recovered, it seems this would be a good sign that an irreversible problem has occurred and that I should simply close this socket connection. Is that a reasonable assumption?

Yes it is. Once you've received that exception, the socket won't ever work again. Closing it is is the only sensible thing to do.

Is there ever a time when this IOException would occur while the socket connection is still being properly connected in the first place (rather than a working connection that failed at some point)?

No. (Or at least, not without subverting proper behavior of the OS'es network stack, the JVM and/or your application.)

Is it wise to always call SocketChannel.isConnected() before attempting a SocketChannel.write() ...

In general, it is a bad idea to call r.isXYZ() before some call that uses the (external) resource r. There is a small chance that the state of the resource will change between the two calls. It is a better idea to do the action, catch the IOException (or whatever) resulting from the failed action and take whatever remedial action is required.

In this particular case, calling isConnected() is pointless. The method is defined to return true if the socket was connected at some point in the past. It does not tell you if the connection is still live. The only way to determine if the connection is still alive is to attempt to use it; e.g. do a read or write.

jQuery - add additional parameters on submit (NOT ajax)

You don't need to bind the submit event on the click of the submit button just bind the submit event and it will capture the submit event no mater how it gets triggered.

Think what you are wanting is to submit the sortable like you would via ajax. Try doing something like this:

var form = $('#event').submit(function () {
    $.each($('#attendance').sortable('toArray'),function(i, value){
        $("<input>").attr({
            'type':'hidden',
            'name':'attendace['+i+']'
        }).val(value).appendTo(form);
    });
});

Java 8 Stream and operation on arrays

Be careful if you have to deal with large numbers.

int[] arr = new int[]{Integer.MIN_VALUE, Integer.MIN_VALUE};
long sum = Arrays.stream(arr).sum(); // Wrong: sum == 0

The sum above is not 2 * Integer.MIN_VALUE. You need to do this in this case.

long sum = Arrays.stream(arr).mapToLong(Long::valueOf).sum(); // Correct

The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion?

I have SQL 2017 installed and this issue happens when the free trial / evaluation period ends, the solution to the problem is the following:

1 - Go to the windows start button, find the Microsoft SQL Server 20XX folder

2- Then, SQL Server 20XX Installation Center

3- On the left, select the option "Maintenance"

4- Then click on “Edition upgrade”

5- Then in the combox select "developer" option, and then click on “next” button

6- Click on the option "I accept the license terms" and then next

7- Finally, click on "Next" and click on "Upgrade", and wait approximately 15 minutes.

8- After this, restart the SQL Server service in "Services.msc" and open SQL again, it should work. For more information: watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVG35ahhjec

How do I mock a REST template exchange?

If your intention is test the service without care about the rest call, I will suggest to not use any annotation in your unit test to simplify the test.

So, my suggestion is refactor your service to receive the resttemplate using injection constructor. This will facilitate the test. Example:

@Service
class SomeService {
    @AutoWired
    SomeService(TestTemplateObjects restTemplateObjects) {
        this.restTemplateObjects = restTemplateObjects;
    }
}

The RestTemplate as component, to be injected and mocked after:

@Component
public class RestTemplateObjects {

    private final RestTemplate restTemplate;

    public RestTemplateObjects () {
        this.restTemplate = new RestTemplate();
        // you can add extra setup the restTemplate here, like errorHandler or converters
    }

    public RestTemplate getRestTemplate() {
        return restTemplate;
    }
}

And the test:

public void test() {

    when(mockedRestTemplateObject.get).thenReturn(mockRestTemplate);

    //mock restTemplate.exchange
    when(mockRestTemplate.exchange(...)).thenReturn(mockedResponseEntity);

    SomeService someService = new SomeService(mockedRestTemplateObject);
    someService.getListofObjectsA();
}

In this way, you have direct access to mock the rest template by the SomeService constructor.

How does jQuery work when there are multiple elements with the same ID value?

jQuery's id selector only returns one result. The descendant and multiple selectors in the second and third statements are designed to select multiple elements. It's similar to:

Statement 1

var length = document.getElementById('a').length;

...Yields one result.

Statement 2

var length = 0;
for (i=0; i<document.body.childNodes.length; i++) {
    if (document.body.childNodes.item(i).id == 'a') {
        length++;
    }
}

...Yields two results.

Statement 3

var length = document.getElementById('a').length + document.getElementsByTagName('div').length;

...Also yields two results.

Using ping in c#

using System.Net.NetworkInformation;

public static bool PingHost(string nameOrAddress)
{
    bool pingable = false;
    Ping pinger = null;

    try
    {
        pinger = new Ping();
        PingReply reply = pinger.Send(nameOrAddress);
        pingable = reply.Status == IPStatus.Success;
    }
    catch (PingException)
    {
        // Discard PingExceptions and return false;
    }
    finally
    {
        if (pinger != null)
        {
            pinger.Dispose();
        }
    }

    return pingable;
}

How to set the locale inside a Debian/Ubuntu Docker container?

I used this (after RUN apt-get install -y python3):

RUN apt-get install -y locales
RUN apt-get install -y language-pack-en
ENV LANG en_US.UTF-8
ENV LANGUAGE en_US:en
ENV LC_ALL en_US.UTF-8
RUN python3 -c "print('UTF8 works nice! ')"

And it prints UTF8 works nice! correctly.

Should I use int or Int32

Also consider Int16. If you need to store an Integer in memory in your application and you are concerned about the amount of memory used, then you could go with Int16 since it uses less memeory and has a smaller min/max range than Int32 (which is what int is.)

Python - How to sort a list of lists by the fourth element in each list?

Use sorted() with a key as follows -

>>> unsorted_list = [['a','b','c','5','d'],['e','f','g','3','h'],['i','j','k','4','m']]
>>> sorted(unsorted_list, key = lambda x: int(x[3]))
[['e', 'f', 'g', '3', 'h'], ['i', 'j', 'k', '4', 'm'], ['a', 'b', 'c', '5', 'd']]

The lambda returns the fourth element of each of the inner lists and the sorted function uses that to sort those list. This assumes that int(elem) will not fail for the list.

Or use itemgetter (As Ashwini's comment pointed out, this method would not work if you have string representations of the numbers, since they are bound to fail somewhere for 2+ digit numbers)

>>> from operator import itemgetter
>>> sorted(unsorted_list, key = itemgetter(3))
[['e', 'f', 'g', '3', 'h'], ['i', 'j', 'k', '4', 'm'], ['a', 'b', 'c', '5', 'd']]

Streaming Audio from A URL in Android using MediaPlayer?

Android MediaPlayer doesn't support streaming of MP3 natively until 2.2. In older versions of the OS it appears to only stream 3GP natively. You can try the pocketjourney code, although it's old (there's a new version here) and I had trouble making it sticky — it would stutter whenever it refilled the buffer.

The NPR News app for Android is open source and uses a local proxy server to handle MP3 streaming in versions of the OS before 2.2. You can see the relevant code in lines 199-216 (r94) here: http://code.google.com/p/npr-android-app/source/browse/Npr/src/org/npr/android/news/PlaybackService.java?r=7cf2352b5c3c0fbcdc18a5a8c67d836577e7e8e3

And this is the StreamProxy class: http://code.google.com/p/npr-android-app/source/browse/Npr/src/org/npr/android/news/StreamProxy.java?r=e4984187f45c39a54ea6c88f71197762dbe10e72

The NPR app is also still getting the "error (-38, 0)" sometimes while streaming. This may be a threading issue or a network change issue. Check the issue tracker for updates.

How to force HTTPS using a web.config file

For those using ASP.NET MVC. You can use the RequireHttpsAttribute to force all responses to be HTTPS:

GlobalFilters.Filters.Add(new RequireHttpsAttribute());

Other things you may also want to do to help secure your site:

  1. Force Anti-Forgery tokens to use SSL/TLS:

    AntiForgeryConfig.RequireSsl = true;

  2. Require Cookies to require HTTPS by default by changing the Web.config file:

    <system.web>
        <httpCookies httpOnlyCookies="true" requireSSL="true" />
    </system.web>

  3. Use the NWebSec.Owin NuGet package and add the following line of code to enable Strict Transport Security (HSTS) across the site. Don't forget to add the Preload directive below and submit your site to the HSTS Preload site. More information here and here. Note that if you are not using OWIN, there is a Web.config method you can read up on on the NWebSec site.

    // app is your OWIN IAppBuilder app in Startup.cs
    app.UseHsts(options => options.MaxAge(days: 720).Preload());

  4. Use the NWebSec.Owin NuGet package and add the following line of code to enable Public Key Pinning (HPKP) across the site. More information here and here.

    // app is your OWIN IAppBuilder app in Startup.cs
    app.UseHpkp(options => options
        .Sha256Pins(
            "Base64 encoded SHA-256 hash of your first certificate e.g. cUPcTAZWKaASuYWhhneDttWpY3oBAkE3h2+soZS7sWs=",
            "Base64 encoded SHA-256 hash of your second backup certificate e.g. M8HztCzM3elUxkcjR2S5P4hhyBNf6lHkmjAHKhpGPWE=")
        .MaxAge(days: 30));

  5. Include the https scheme in any URL's used. Content Security Policy (CSP) HTTP header and Subresource Integrity (SRI) do not play nice when you imit the scheme in some browsers. It is better to be explicit about HTTPS. e.g.

    <script src="https://ajax.aspnetcdn.com/ajax/bootstrap/3.3.4/bootstrap.min.js">
    </script>

  6. Use the ASP.NET MVC Boilerplate Visual Studio project template to generate a project with all of this and much more built in. You can also view the code on GitHub.

SQL Server Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >=

Try this:

SELECT
    od.Sku,
    od.mf_item_number,
    od.Qty,
    od.Price,
    s.SupplierId,
    s.SupplierName,
    s.DropShipFees,
    si.Price as cost
FROM
    OrderDetails od
    INNER JOIN Supplier s on s.SupplierId = od.Mfr_ID
    INNER JOIN Group_Master gm on gm.Sku = od.Sku
    INNER JOIN Supplier_Item si on si.SKU = od.Sku and si.SupplierId = s.SupplierID
WHERE
    od.invoiceid = '339740'

This will return multiple rows that are identical except for the cost column. Look at the different cost values that are returned and figure out what is causing the different values. Then ask somebody which cost value they want, and add the criteria to the query that will select that cost.

How to use jquery or ajax to update razor partial view in c#/asp.net for a MVC project

You'll need AJAX if you want to update a part of your page without reloading the entire page.

main cshtml view

<div id="refTable">
     <!-- partial view content will be inserted here -->
</div>

@Html.TextBox("yearSelect3", Convert.ToDateTime(tempItem3.Holiday_date).Year.ToString());
<button id="pY">PrevY</button>

<script>
    $(document).ready(function() {
        $("#pY").on("click", function() {
            var val = $('#yearSelect3').val();
            $.ajax({
                url: "/Holiday/Calendar",
                type: "GET",
                data: { year: ((val * 1) + 1) }
            })
            .done(function(partialViewResult) {
                $("#refTable").html(partialViewResult);
            });
        });
    });
</script>

You'll need to add the fields I have omitted. I've used a <button> instead of submit buttons because you don't have a form (I don't see one in your markup) and you just need them to trigger javascript on the client side.

The HolidayPartialView gets rendered into html and the jquery done callback inserts that html fragment into the refTable div.

HolidayController Update action

[HttpGet]
public ActionResult Calendar(int year)
{
    var dates = new List<DateTime>() { /* values based on year */ };
    HolidayViewModel model = new HolidayViewModel {
        Dates = dates
    };
    return PartialView("HolidayPartialView", model);
}

This controller action takes the year parameter and returns a list of dates using a strongly-typed view model instead of the ViewBag.

view model

public class HolidayViewModel
{
    IEnumerable<DateTime> Dates { get; set; }
}

HolidayPartialView.csthml

@model Your.Namespace.HolidayViewModel;

<table class="tblHoliday">
    @foreach(var date in Model.Dates)
    {
        <tr><td>@date.ToString("MM/dd/yyyy")</td></tr>
    }
</table>

This is the stuff that gets inserted into your div.

Binding ItemsSource of a ComboBoxColumn in WPF DataGrid

Pls, check if DataGridComboBoxColumn xaml below would work for you:

<DataGridComboBoxColumn
    SelectedValueBinding="{Binding CompanyID}"
    DisplayMemberPath="Name"
    SelectedValuePath="ID">

    <DataGridComboBoxColumn.ElementStyle>
        <Style TargetType="{x:Type ComboBox}">
            <Setter Property="ItemsSource" Value="{Binding Path=DataContext.CompanyItems, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type Window}}}" />
        </Style>
    </DataGridComboBoxColumn.ElementStyle>
    <DataGridComboBoxColumn.EditingElementStyle>
        <Style TargetType="{x:Type ComboBox}">
            <Setter Property="ItemsSource" Value="{Binding Path=DataContext.CompanyItems, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type Window}}}" />
        </Style>
    </DataGridComboBoxColumn.EditingElementStyle>
</DataGridComboBoxColumn>

Here you can find another solution for the problem you're facing: Using combo boxes with the WPF DataGrid

Close Android Application

I don't think you can do it in one line of code. Try opening your activities with startActivityForResult. As the result you can pass something like a CLOSE_FLAG, which will inform your parent activity that its child activity has finished.

That said, you should probably read this answer.

AngularJS: How can I pass variables between controllers?

Second Approach :

angular.module('myApp', [])
  .controller('Ctrl1', ['$scope',
    function($scope) {

    $scope.prop1 = "First";

    $scope.clickFunction = function() {
      $scope.$broadcast('update_Ctrl2_controller', $scope.prop1);
    };
   }
])
.controller('Ctrl2', ['$scope',
    function($scope) {
      $scope.prop2 = "Second";

        $scope.$on("update_Ctrl2_controller", function(event, prop) {
        $scope.prop = prop;

        $scope.both = prop + $scope.prop2;
    });
  }
])

Html :

<div ng-controller="Ctrl2">
  <p>{{both}}</p>
</div>

<button ng-click="clickFunction()">Click</button>

Python list iterator behavior and next(iterator)

For those who still do not understand.

>>> a = iter(list(range(10)))
>>> for i in a:
...    print(i)
...    next(a)
...
0 # print(i) printed this
1 # next(a) printed this
2 # print(i) printed this
3 # next(a) printed this
4 # print(i) printed this
5 # next(a) printed this
6 # print(i) printed this
7 # next(a) printed this
8 # print(i) printed this
9 # next(a) printed this

As others have already said, next increases the iterator by 1 as expected. Assigning its returned value to a variable doesn't magically changes its behaviour.

require(vendor/autoload.php): failed to open stream

This error occurs because of missing some files and the main reason is "Composer"

enter image description here

First Run these commands in CMD

php -r "copy('https://getcomposer.org/installer', 'composer-setup.php');"
php -r "if (hash_file('sha384', 'composer-setup.php') === 'e0012edf3e80b6978849f5eff0d4b4e4c79ff1609dd1e613307e16318854d24ae64f26d17af3ef0bf7cfb710ca74755a') { echo 'Installer verified'; } else { echo 'Installer corrupt'; unlink('composer-setup.php'); } echo PHP_EOL;"
php composer-setup.php
php -r "unlink('composer-setup.php');"

Then Create a New project

how to convert milliseconds to date format in android?

You can construct java.util.Date on milliseconds. And then converted it to string with java.text.DateFormat.

python request with authentication (access_token)

The requests package has a very nice API for HTTP requests, adding a custom header works like this (source: official docs):

>>> import requests
>>> response = requests.get(
... 'https://website.com/id', headers={'Authorization': 'access_token myToken'})

If you don't want to use an external dependency, the same thing using urllib2 of the standard library looks like this (source: the missing manual):

>>> import urllib2
>>> response = urllib2.urlopen(
... urllib2.Request('https://website.com/id', headers={'Authorization': 'access_token myToken'})

How to select count with Laravel's fluent query builder?

You can use an array in the select() to define more columns and you can use the DB::raw() there with aliasing it to followers. Should look like this:

$query = DB::table('category_issue')
    ->select(array('issues.*', DB::raw('COUNT(issue_subscriptions.issue_id) as followers')))
    ->where('category_id', '=', 1)
    ->join('issues', 'category_issue.issue_id', '=', 'issues.id')
    ->left_join('issue_subscriptions', 'issues.id', '=', 'issue_subscriptions.issue_id')
    ->group_by('issues.id')
    ->order_by('followers', 'desc')
    ->get();

should do the trick, after you have made a commit to your local repository.

how to make a jquery "$.post" request synchronous

From the Jquery docs: you specify the async option to be false to get a synchronous Ajax request. Then your callback can set some data before your mother function proceeds.

Here's what your code would look like if changed as suggested:

beforecreate: function(node,targetNode,type,to) {
    jQuery.ajax({
         url:    url,
         success: function(result) {
                      if(result.isOk == false)
                          alert(result.message);
                  },
         async:   false
    });
}

this is because $.ajax is the only request type that you can set the asynchronousity for

How can I disable all views inside the layout?

Use below recursive function to make your child views visible or gone. First argument is your parent view and second argument decides if you want childs of parent view visible or gone. true = visible false = gone

Correct way to delete cookies server-side

Setting "expires" to a past date is the standard way to delete a cookie.

Your problem is probably because the date format is not conventional. IE probably expects GMT only.

How to set time zone of a java.util.Date?

Convert the Date to String and do it with SimpleDateFormat.

    SimpleDateFormat readFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss");
    readFormat.setTimeZone(TimeZone.getTimeZone("GMT" + timezoneOffset));
    String dateStr = readFormat.format(date);
    SimpleDateFormat writeFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss");
    Date date = writeFormat.parse(dateStr);

T-SQL XOR Operator

How about this?

(A=1 OR B=1 OR C=1)
AND NOT (A=1 AND B=1 AND C=1)

And if A, B and C can have null values you would need the following:

(A=1 OR B=1 OR C=1)
AND NOT ( (A=1 AND A is not null) AND (B=1 AND B is not null) AND (C=1 AND C is not null) )

This is scalable to larger number of fields and hence more applicable.

What's the location of the JavaFX runtime JAR file, jfxrt.jar, on Linux?

The location of jfxrt.jar in JDK 1.8 (Windows) is:

C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_05\jre\lib\ext\jfxrt.jar

jQuery: get the file name selected from <input type="file" />

It is just such simple as writing:

$('input[type=file]').val()

Anyway, I suggest using name or ID attribute to select your input. And with event, it should look like this:

$('input[type=file]').change(function(e){
  $in=$(this);
  $in.next().html($in.val());
});

Custom exception type

Here is how you can create custom errors with completely identical to native Error's behaviour. This technique works only in Chrome and node.js for now. I also wouldn't recommend to use it if you don't understand what it does.

Error.createCustromConstructor = (function() {

    function define(obj, prop, value) {
        Object.defineProperty(obj, prop, {
            value: value,
            configurable: true,
            enumerable: false,
            writable: true
        });
    }

    return function(name, init, proto) {
        var CustomError;
        proto = proto || {};
        function build(message) {
            var self = this instanceof CustomError
                ? this
                : Object.create(CustomError.prototype);
            Error.apply(self, arguments);
            Error.captureStackTrace(self, CustomError);
            if (message != undefined) {
                define(self, 'message', String(message));
            }
            define(self, 'arguments', undefined);
            define(self, 'type', undefined);
            if (typeof init == 'function') {
                init.apply(self, arguments);
            }
            return self;
        }
        eval('CustomError = function ' + name + '() {' +
            'return build.apply(this, arguments); }');
        CustomError.prototype = Object.create(Error.prototype);
        define(CustomError.prototype, 'constructor', CustomError);
        for (var key in proto) {
            define(CustomError.prototype, key, proto[key]);
        }
        Object.defineProperty(CustomError.prototype, 'name', { value: name });
        return CustomError;
    }

})();

As a reasult we get

/**
 * name The name of the constructor name
 * init   User-defined initialization function
 * proto It's enumerable members will be added to
 *        prototype of created constructor
 **/
Error.createCustromConstructor = function(name, init, proto)

Then you can use it like this:

var NotImplementedError = Error.createCustromConstructor('NotImplementedError');

And use NotImplementedError as you would Error:

throw new NotImplementedError();
var err = new NotImplementedError();
var err = NotImplementedError('Not yet...');

And it will behave is expected:

err instanceof NotImplementedError // -> true
err instanceof Error // -> true
NotImplementedError.prototype.isPrototypeOf(err) // -> true
Error.prototype.isPrototypeOf(err)               // -> true
err.constructor.name                             // -> NotImplementedError
err.name                                         // -> NotImplementedError
err.message                                      // -> Not yet...
err.toString()                                   // -> NotImplementedError: Not yet...
err.stack                                        // -> works fine!

Note, that error.stack works absolutle correct and won't include NotImplementedError constructor call (thanks to v8's Error.captureStackTrace()).

Note. There is ugly eval(). The only reason it is used is to get correct err.constructor.name. If you don't need it, you can a bit simplify everything.

ElasticSearch: Unassigned Shards, how to fix?

By default, Elasticsearch will re-assign shards to nodes dynamically. However, if you've disabled shard allocation (perhaps you did a rolling restart and forgot to re-enable it), you can re-enable shard allocation.

# v0.90.x and earlier
curl -XPUT 'localhost:9200/_settings' -d '{
    "index.routing.allocation.disable_allocation": false
}'

# v1.0+
curl -XPUT 'localhost:9200/_cluster/settings' -d '{
    "transient" : {
        "cluster.routing.allocation.enable" : "all"
    }
}'

Elasticsearch will then reassign shards as normal. This can be slow, consider raising indices.recovery.max_bytes_per_sec and cluster.routing.allocation.node_concurrent_recoveries to speed it up.

If you're still seeing issues, something else is probably wrong, so look in your Elasticsearch logs for errors. If you see EsRejectedExecutionException your thread pools may be too small.

Finally, you can explicitly reassign a shard to a node with the reroute API.

# Suppose shard 4 of index "my-index" is unassigned, so you want to
# assign it to node search03:
curl -XPOST 'localhost:9200/_cluster/reroute' -d '{
    "commands": [{
        "allocate": {
            "index": "my-index",
            "shard": 4,
            "node": "search03",
            "allow_primary": 1
        }
    }]
}'

Generate fixed length Strings filled with whitespaces

This code will have exactly the given amount of characters; filled with spaces or truncated on the right side:

private String leftpad(String text, int length) {
    return String.format("%" + length + "." + length + "s", text);
}

private String rightpad(String text, int length) {
    return String.format("%-" + length + "." + length + "s", text);
}

using mailto to send email with an attachment

Nope, this is not possible at all. There is no provision for it in the mailto: protocol, and it would be a gaping security hole if it were possible.

The best idea to send a file, but have the client send the E-Mail that I can think of is:

  • Have the user choose a file
  • Upload the file to a server
  • Have the server return a random file name after upload
  • Build a mailto: link that contains the URL to the uploaded file in the message body

ASP.NET MVC 4 Custom Authorize Attribute with Permission Codes (without roles)

I could do this with a custom attribute as follows.

[AuthorizeUser(AccessLevel = "Create")]
public ActionResult CreateNewInvoice()
{
    //...
    return View();
}

Custom Attribute class as follows.

public class AuthorizeUserAttribute : AuthorizeAttribute
{
    // Custom property
    public string AccessLevel { get; set; }

    protected override bool AuthorizeCore(HttpContextBase httpContext)
    {
        var isAuthorized = base.AuthorizeCore(httpContext);
        if (!isAuthorized)
        {
            return false;
        }

        string privilegeLevels = string.Join("", GetUserRights(httpContext.User.Identity.Name.ToString())); // Call another method to get rights of the user from DB

        return privilegeLevels.Contains(this.AccessLevel);
    }
}

You can redirect an unauthorised user in your custom AuthorisationAttribute by overriding the HandleUnauthorizedRequest method:

protected override void HandleUnauthorizedRequest(AuthorizationContext filterContext)
{
    filterContext.Result = new RedirectToRouteResult(
                new RouteValueDictionary(
                    new
                        {
                            controller = "Error",
                            action = "Unauthorised"
                        })
                );
}

Angular expression if array contains

You shouldn't overload the templates with complex logic, it's a bad practice. Remember to always keep it simple!

The better approach would be to extract this logic into reusable function on your $rootScope:

.run(function ($rootScope) {
  $rootScope.inArray = function (item, array) {
    return (-1 !== array.indexOf(item));
  };
})

Then, use it in your template:

<li ng-class="{approved: inArray(jobSet, selectedForApproval)}"></li>

I think everyone will agree that this example is much more readable and maintainable.

Angular.js vs Knockout.js vs Backbone.js

It depends on the nature of your application. And, since you did not describe it in great detail, it is an impossible question to answer. I find Backbone to be the easiest, but I work in Angular all day. Performance is more up to the coder than the framework, in my opinion.

Are you doing heavy DOM manipulation? I would use jQuery and Backbone.

Very data driven app? Angular with its nice data binding.

Game programming? None - direct to canvas; maybe a game engine.

Conditional Formatting (IF not empty)

Does this work for you:

enter image description here

You find this dialog on the Home ribbon, under the Styles group, the Conditional Formatting menu, New rule....

User Control - Custom Properties

It is very simple, just add a property:

public string Value {
  get { return textBox1.Text; }
  set { textBox1.Text = value; }
}

Using the Text property is a bit trickier, the UserControl class intentionally hides it. You'll need to override the attributes to put it back in working order:

[Browsable(true), EditorBrowsable(EditorBrowsableState.Always), Bindable(true)]
[DesignerSerializationVisibility(DesignerSerializationVisibility.Visible)]
public override string Text {
  get { return textBox1.Text; }
  set { textBox1.Text = value; }
}

How to turn off caching on Firefox?

Firefox 48 Developer Tools

Allows you to turn off cache only when toolbox is open, which is perfect for web development:

  • F12
  • gearbox on right upper corner
  • scroll down top Advanced settings
  • check "Disable Cache (when toolbox is open)"

https://stackoverflow.com/a/27397425/895245 has similar content, but positioning changed a bit since.

Python, print all floats to 2 decimal places in output

If you are looking for readability, I believe that this is that code:

print '%(kg).2f kg = %(lb).2f lb = %(gal).2f gal = %(l).2f l' % {
    'kg': var1,
    'lb': var2,
    'gal': var3,
    'l': var4,
}

%i or %d to print integer in C using printf()?

They are completely equivalent when used with printf(). Personally, I prefer %d, it's used more often (should I say "it's the idiomatic conversion specifier for int"?).

(One difference between %i and %d is that when used with scanf(), then %d always expects a decimal integer, whereas %i recognizes the 0 and 0x prefixes as octal and hexadecimal, but no sane programmer uses scanf() anyway so this should not be a concern.)

Get table column names in MySQL?

The mysql_list_fields function might interest you ; but, as the manual states :

This function is deprecated. It is preferable to use mysql_query() to issue a SQL SHOW COLUMNS FROM table [LIKE 'name'] statement instead.

Adding text to ImageView in Android

You can also use a TextView and set the background image to what you wanted in the ImageView. Furthermore if you were using the ImageView as a button you can set it to click-able

Here is some basic code for a TextView that shows an image with text on top of it.

<TextView
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="fill_parent"
    android:background="@drawable/your_image"
    android:text="your text here" />

There has been an error processing your request, Error log record number

I encountered a problem like this and it turns out that I accidentally changed the permission of the var/cache folder. Just delete the cache folder so magento could automatically create the folder with the right permissions.

rm -rf root/var/cache

Should a function have only one return statement?

My usual policy is to have only one return statement at the end of a function unless the complexity of the code is greatly reduced by adding more. In fact, I'm rather a fan of Eiffel, which enforces the only one return rule by having no return statement (there's just a auto-created 'result' variable to put your result in).

There certainly are cases where code can be made clearer with multiple returns than the obvious version without them would be. One could argue that more rework is needed if you have a function that is too complex to be understandable without multiple return statements, but sometimes it's good to be pragmatic about such things.

Android Bitmap to Base64 String

Try this, first scale your image to required width and height, just pass your original bitmap, required width and required height to the following method and get scaled bitmap in return:

For example: Bitmap scaledBitmap = getScaledBitmap(originalBitmap, 250, 350);

private Bitmap getScaledBitmap(Bitmap b, int reqWidth, int reqHeight)
{
    int bWidth = b.getWidth();
    int bHeight = b.getHeight();

    int nWidth = bWidth;
    int nHeight = bHeight;

    if(nWidth > reqWidth)
    {
        int ratio = bWidth / reqWidth;
        if(ratio > 0)
        {
            nWidth = reqWidth;
            nHeight = bHeight / ratio;
        }
    }

    if(nHeight > reqHeight)
    {
        int ratio = bHeight / reqHeight;
        if(ratio > 0)
        {
            nHeight = reqHeight;
            nWidth = bWidth / ratio;
        }
    }

    return Bitmap.createScaledBitmap(b, nWidth, nHeight, true);
}

Now just pass your scaled bitmap to the following method and get base64 string in return:

For example: String base64String = getBase64String(scaledBitmap);

private String getBase64String(Bitmap bitmap)
{
    ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();

    bitmap.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.JPEG, 100, baos);

    byte[] imageBytes = baos.toByteArray();

    String base64String = Base64.encodeToString(imageBytes, Base64.NO_WRAP);

    return base64String;
}

To decode the base64 string back to bitmap image:

byte[] decodedByteArray = Base64.decode(base64String, Base64.NO_WRAP);
Bitmap decodedBitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeByteArray(decodedByteArray, 0, decodedString.length);

Python - TypeError: 'int' object is not iterable

If the case is:

n=int(input())

Instead of -> for i in n: -> gives error- 'int' object is not iterable

Use -> for i in range(0,n): -> works fine..!

How to pass text in a textbox to JavaScript function?

This is what I have done. (Adapt from all of your answers)

<input name="textbox1" type="text" id="txt1"/>
<input name="buttonExecute" onclick="execute(document.getElementById('txt1').value)" type="button" value="Execute" />

It works. Thanks to all of you. :)

nginx 502 bad gateway

Similar setup here and looks like it was just a bug in my code. At the start of my app I looked for the offending URL and this worked: echo '<html>test</html>'; exit();

In my case, turns out the problem was an uninitialized variable that only failed under peculiar circumstances.

Can two or more people edit an Excel document at the same time?

Unfortunately, the file must be locked for updates unless you're using Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 together. This means that only one user per time can edit a file. The locking and version tracking capabilities of SharePoint are excellent, and this makes it a great tool for the type of collaboration you're talking about, but you would have to split documents into multiple files in order to extend the amount that could be edited at a time. For instance, we sometimes unmerge documents into technical, requirements, and financials sections so that the 3 experts required for the review can work concurrently. We then merge when everyone is finished.

How to run a script at the start up of Ubuntu?

First of all, the easiest way to run things at startup is to add them to the file /etc/rc.local.

Another simple way is to use @reboot in your crontab. Read the cron manpage for details.

However, if you want to do things properly, in addition to adding a script to /etc/init.d you need to tell ubuntu when the script should be run and with what parameters. This is done with the command update-rc.d which creates a symlink from some of the /etc/rc* directories to your script. So, you'd need to do something like:

update-rc.d yourscriptname start 2

However, real init scripts should be able to handle a variety of command line options and otherwise integrate to the startup process. The file /etc/init.d/README has some details and further pointers.

How can I trigger a JavaScript event click

.click() does not work with Android (look at mozilla docs, at mobile section). You can trigger the click event with this method:

function fireClick(node){
    if (document.createEvent) {
        var evt = document.createEvent('MouseEvents');
        evt.initEvent('click', true, false);
        node.dispatchEvent(evt);
    } else if (document.createEventObject) {
        node.fireEvent('onclick') ;
    } else if (typeof node.onclick == 'function') {
        node.onclick();
    }
}

How to generate a random number between a and b in Ruby?

UPDATE: Ruby 1.9.3 Kernel#rand also accepts ranges

rand(a..b)

http://www.rubyinside.com/ruby-1-9-3-introduction-and-changes-5428.html

Converting to array may be too expensive, and it's unnecessary.

(a..b).to_a.sample

Or

[*a..b].sample

Array#sample

Standard in Ruby 1.8.7+.
Note: was named #choice in 1.8.7 and renamed in later versions.

But anyway, generating array need resources, and solution you already wrote is the best, you can do.

res.sendFile absolute path

you can use send instead of sendFile so you wont face with error! this works will help you!

fs.readFile('public/index1.html',(err,data)=>{
if(err){
  consol.log(err);
}else {
res.setHeader('Content-Type', 'application/pdf');

for telling browser that your response is type of PDF

res.setHeader('Content-Disposition', 'attachment; filename='your_file_name_for_client.pdf');

if you want that file open immediately on the same page after user download it.write 'inline' instead attachment in above code.

res.send(data)

Hexadecimal value 0x00 is a invalid character

I also get the same error in an ASP.NET application when I saved some unicode data (Hindi) in the Web.config file and saved it with "Unicode" encoding.

It fixed the error for me when I saved the Web.config file with "UTF-8" encoding.

How do I read / convert an InputStream into a String in Java?

Well, you can program it for yourself... It's not complicated...

String Inputstream2String (InputStream is) throws IOException
    {
        final int PKG_SIZE = 1024;
        byte[] data = new byte [PKG_SIZE];
        StringBuilder buffer = new StringBuilder(PKG_SIZE * 10);
        int size;

        size = is.read(data, 0, data.length);
        while (size > 0)
        {
            String str = new String(data, 0, size);
            buffer.append(str);
            size = is.read(data, 0, data.length);
        }
        return buffer.toString();
    }

HTML form action and onsubmit issues

You should stop the submit procedure by returning false on the onsubmit callback.

<script>
    function checkRegistration(){
        if(!form_valid){
            alert('Given data is not correct');
            return false;
        }
        return true;
    }
</script>

<form onsubmit="return checkRegistration()"...

Here you have a fully working example. The form will submit only when you write google into input, otherwise it will return an error:

<script>
    function checkRegistration(){
        var form_valid = (document.getElementById('some_input').value == 'google');
        if(!form_valid){
            alert('Given data is incorrect');
            return false;
        }
        return true;
    }
</script>

<form onsubmit="return checkRegistration()" method="get" action="http://google.com">
    Write google to go to google...<br/>
    <input type="text" id="some_input" value=""/>
    <input type="submit" value="google it"/>
</form>

PHP substring extraction. Get the string before the first '/' or the whole string

You could create a helper function to take care of that:

/**
 * Return string before needle if it exists.
 *
 * @param string $str
 * @param mixed $needle
 * @return string
 */
function str_before($str, $needle)
{
    $pos = strpos($str, $needle);

    return ($pos !== false) ? substr($str, 0, $pos) : $str;
}

Here's a use case:

$sing = 'My name is Luka. I live on the second floor.';

echo str_before($sing, '.'); // My name is Luka

How do I call a function twice or more times consecutively?

You may try while loop as shown below;

def do1():
    # Do something

def do2(x):
    while x > 0:
        do1()
        x -= 1

do2(5)

Thus make call the do1 function 5 times.

What's the algorithm to calculate aspect ratio?

I think this does what you are asking for:

webdeveloper.com - decimal to fraction

Width/height gets you a decimal, converted to a fraction with ":" in place of '/' gives you a "ratio".

How can I get date in application run by node.js?

To create a new Date object in node.js, or JavaScript in general, just call it’s initializer

var d = new Date();

var d = new Date(dateString);

var d = new Date(jsonDate);

var d = new Date(year, month, day);

var d = new Date(year, month, day, hour, minute, second, millisecond);

Remember that Date objects can only be instantiated by calling Date or using it as a constructor; unlike other JavaScript object types, Date objects have no literal syntax

How to layout multiple panels on a jFrame? (java)

The JPanel is actually only a container where you can put different elements in it (even other JPanels). So in your case I would suggest one big JPanel as some sort of main container for your window. That main panel you assign a Layout that suits your needs ( here is an introduction to the layouts).

After you set the layout to your main panel you can add the paint panel and the other JPanels you want (like those with the text in it..).

  JPanel mainPanel = new JPanel();
  mainPanel.setLayout(new BoxLayout(mainPanel, BoxLayout.Y_AXIS));

  JPanel paintPanel = new JPanel();
  JPanel textPanel = new JPanel();

  mainPanel.add(paintPanel);
  mainPanel.add(textPanel);

This is just an example that sorts all sub panels vertically (Y-Axis). So if you want some other stuff at the bottom of your mainPanel (maybe some icons or buttons) that should be organized with another layout (like a horizontal layout), just create again a new JPanel as a container for all the other stuff and set setLayout(new BoxLayout(mainPanel, BoxLayout.X_AXIS).

As you will find out, the layouts are quite rigid and it may be difficult to find the best layout for your panels. So don't give up, read the introduction (the link above) and look at the pictures – this is how I do it :)

Or you can just use NetBeans to write your program. There you have a pretty easy visual editor (drag and drop) to create all sorts of Windows and Frames. (only understanding the code afterwards is ... tricky sometimes.)

EDIT

Since there are some many people interested in this question, I wanted to provide a complete example of how to layout a JFrame to make it look like OP wants it to.

The class is called MyFrame and extends swings JFrame

public class MyFrame extends javax.swing.JFrame{

    // these are the components we need.
    private final JSplitPane splitPane; // split the window in top and bottom
    private final JPanel topPanel; // container panel for the top
    private final JPanel bottomPanel; // container panel for the bottom
    private final JScrollPane scrollPane; // makes the text scrollable
    private final JTextArea textArea; // the text
    private final JPanel inputPanel; // under the text a container for all the input elements
    private final JTextField textField; // a textField for the text the user inputs
    private final JButton button; // and a "send" button

    public MyFrame(){

        // first, lets create the containers:
        // the splitPane devides the window in two components (here: top and bottom)
        // users can then move the devider and decide how much of the top component
        // and how much of the bottom component they want to see.
        splitPane = new JSplitPane();

        topPanel = new JPanel(); // our top component
        bottomPanel = new JPanel(); // our bottom component

        // in our bottom panel we want the text area and the input components
        scrollPane = new JScrollPane(); // this scrollPane is used to make the text area scrollable
        textArea = new JTextArea(); // this text area will be put inside the scrollPane

        // the input components will be put in a separate panel
        inputPanel = new JPanel();
        textField = new JTextField(); // first the input field where the user can type his text
        button = new JButton("send"); // and a button at the right, to send the text

        // now lets define the default size of our window and its layout:
        setPreferredSize(new Dimension(400, 400));     // let's open the window with a default size of 400x400 pixels
        // the contentPane is the container that holds all our components
        getContentPane().setLayout(new GridLayout()); // the default GridLayout is like a grid with 1 column and 1 row,
        // we only add one element to the window itself
        getContentPane().add(splitPane); // due to the GridLayout, our splitPane will now fill the whole window

        // let's configure our splitPane:
        splitPane.setOrientation(JSplitPane.VERTICAL_SPLIT); // we want it to split the window verticaly
        splitPane.setDividerLocation(200); // the initial position of the divider is 200 (our window is 400 pixels high)
        splitPane.setTopComponent(topPanel); // at the top we want our "topPanel"
        splitPane.setBottomComponent(bottomPanel); // and at the bottom we want our "bottomPanel"

        // our topPanel doesn't need anymore for this example. Whatever you want it to contain, you can add it here
        bottomPanel.setLayout(new BoxLayout(bottomPanel, BoxLayout.Y_AXIS)); // BoxLayout.Y_AXIS will arrange the content vertically

        bottomPanel.add(scrollPane); // first we add the scrollPane to the bottomPanel, so it is at the top
        scrollPane.setViewportView(textArea); // the scrollPane should make the textArea scrollable, so we define the viewport
        bottomPanel.add(inputPanel); // then we add the inputPanel to the bottomPanel, so it under the scrollPane / textArea

        // let's set the maximum size of the inputPanel, so it doesn't get too big when the user resizes the window
        inputPanel.setMaximumSize(new Dimension(Integer.MAX_VALUE, 75)); // we set the max height to 75 and the max width to (almost) unlimited
        inputPanel.setLayout(new BoxLayout(inputPanel, BoxLayout.X_AXIS));   // X_Axis will arrange the content horizontally

        inputPanel.add(textField); // left will be the textField
        inputPanel.add(button); // and right the "send" button

        pack(); // calling pack() at the end, will ensure that every layout and size we just defined gets applied before the stuff becomes visible
    }

    public static void main(String args[]){
        EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable(){
            @Override
            public void run(){
                new MyFrame().setVisible(true);
            }
        });
    }
}

Please be aware that this is only an example and there are multiple approaches to layout a window. It all depends on your needs and if you want the content to be resizable / responsive. Another really good approach would be the GridBagLayout which can handle quite complex layouting, but which is also quite complex to learn.

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1 Incorrect syntax near ' '

For the OP's command:

select compid,2, convert(datetime, '01/01/' + CONVERT(char(4),cal_yr) ,101) ,0,  Update_dt, th1, th2, th3_pc , Update_id, Update_dt,1
from  #tmp_CTF**

I get this error:

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near '*'.

when debugging something like this split the long line up so you'll get a better row number:

select compid
,2
, convert(datetime
, '01/01/'
+ CONVERT(char(4)
,cal_yr)
,101)
,0
,  Update_dt
, th1
, th2
, th3_pc
, Update_id
, Update_dt
,1
from  #tmp_CTF**

this now results in:

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 16
Incorrect syntax near '*'.

which is probably just from the OP not putting the entire command in the question, or use [ ] braces to signify the table name:

from [#tmp_CTF**]

if that is the table name.

openpyxl - adjust column width size

All the above answers are generating an issue which is that col[0].column is returning number while worksheet.column_dimensions[column] accepts only character such as 'A', 'B', 'C' in place of column. I've modified @Virako's code and it is working fine now.

import re
import openpyxl
..
for col in _ws.columns:
    max_lenght = 0
    print(col[0])
    col_name = re.findall('\w\d', str(col[0]))
    col_name = col_name[0]
    col_name = re.findall('\w', str(col_name))[0]
    print(col_name)
    for cell in col:
        try:
            if len(str(cell.value)) > max_lenght:
                max_lenght = len(cell.value)
        except:
            pass
    adjusted_width = (max_lenght+2)
    _ws.column_dimensions[col_name].width = adjusted_width

How to multi-line "Replace in files..." in Notepad++

Actually it's way easier to use ToolBucket plugin for Notepad++ to multiline replace.

To activate it just go to N++ menu:

Plugins > Plugin Manager > Show Plugin Manager > Check ToolBucket > Install.

Restart N++ and press ALT + SHIFT + F to multiline edit.

Select all contents of textbox when it receives focus (Vanilla JS or jQuery)

The answers here helped me up to a point, but I had a problem on HTML5 Number input fields when clicking the up/down buttons in Chrome.

If you click one of the buttons, and left the mouse over the button the number would keep changing as if you were holding the mouse button because the mouseup was being thrown away.

I solved this by removing the mouseup handler as soon as it had been triggered as below:

    $("input:number").focus(function () {
        var $elem = $(this);
        $elem.select().mouseup(function (e) {
            e.preventDefault();
            $elem.unbind(e.type);
        });
    });

Hope this helps people in the future...

Determining complexity for recursive functions (Big O notation)

I see that for the accepted answer (recursivefn5), some folks are having issues with the explanation. so I'd try to clarify to the best of my knowledge.

  1. The for loop runs for n/2 times because at each iteration, we are increasing i (the counter) by a factor of 2. so say n = 10, the for loop will run 10/2 = 5 times i.e when i is 0,2,4,6 and 8 respectively.

  2. In the same regard, the recursive call is reduced by a factor of 5 for every time it is called i.e it runs for n/5 times. Again assume n = 10, the recursive call runs for 10/5 = 2 times i.e when n is 10 and 5 and then it hits the base case and terminates.

  3. Calculating the total run time, the for loop runs n/2 times for every time we call the recursive function. since the recursive fxn runs n/5 times (in 2 above),the for loop runs for (n/2) * (n/5) = (n^2)/10 times, which translates to an overall Big O runtime of O(n^2) - ignoring the constant (1/10)...

How do you synchronise projects to GitHub with Android Studio?

For Android Studio 0.8.9: VCS --> Import into version contraol --> Share project on Github. It doesn't give you option to share in a specific repository or at least I couldn't find (my limitation!).

You can add your github info here: File --> Settings --> Version COntraol --> Github.

            empStr = '';
            j++;
        }else{
            empStr=empStr+str[i];
        }
    }
    for(var z=chunk.length-1;z>=0;z--){

Parsing ISO 8601 date in Javascript

According to MSDN, the JavaScript Date object does not provide any specific date formatting methods (as you may see with other programming languages). However, you can use a few of the Date methods and formatting to accomplish your goal:

function dateToString (date) {
  // Use an array to format the month numbers
  var months = [
    "January",
    "February",
    "March",
    ...
  ];

  // Use an object to format the timezone identifiers
  var timeZones = {
    "360": "EST",
    ...
  };

  var month = months[date.getMonth()];
  var day = date.getDate();
  var year = date.getFullYear();

  var hours = date.getHours();
  var minutes = date.getMinutes();
  var time = (hours > 11 ? (hours - 11) : (hours + 1)) + ":" + minutes + (hours > 11 ? "PM" : "AM");
  var timezone = timeZones[date.getTimezoneOffset()];

  // Returns formatted date as string (e.g. January 28, 2011 - 7:30PM EST)
  return month + " " + day + ", " + year + " - " + time + " " + timezone;
}

var date = new Date("2011-01-28T19:30:00-05:00");

alert(dateToString(date));

You could even take it one step further and override the Date.toString() method:

function dateToString () { // No date argument this time
  // Use an array to format the month numbers
  var months = [
    "January",
    "February",
    "March",
    ...
  ];

  // Use an object to format the timezone identifiers
  var timeZones = {
    "360": "EST",
    ...
  };

  var month = months[*this*.getMonth()];
  var day = *this*.getDate();
  var year = *this*.getFullYear();

  var hours = *this*.getHours();
  var minutes = *this*.getMinutes();
  var time = (hours > 11 ? (hours - 11) : (hours + 1)) + ":" + minutes + (hours > 11 ? "PM" : "AM");
  var timezone = timeZones[*this*.getTimezoneOffset()];

  // Returns formatted date as string (e.g. January 28, 2011 - 7:30PM EST)
  return month + " " + day + ", " + year + " - " + time + " " + timezone;
}

var date = new Date("2011-01-28T19:30:00-05:00");
Date.prototype.toString = dateToString;

alert(date.toString());

In git, what is the difference between merge --squash and rebase?

Let's start by the following example:

enter image description here

Now we have 3 options to merge changes of feature branch into master branch:

  1. Merge commits
    Will keep all commits history of the feature branch and move them into the master branch
    Will add extra dummy commit.

  2. Rebase and merge
    Will append all commits history of the feature branch in the front of the master branch
    Will NOT add extra dummy commit.

  3. Squash and merge
    Will group all feature branch commits into one commit then append it in the front of the master branch
    Will add extra dummy commit.

You can find below how the master branch will look after each one of them.

enter image description here

In all cases:
We can safely DELETE the feature branch.

Fastest JavaScript summation

For your specific case, just use the reduce method of Arrays:

var sumArray = function() {
    // Use one adding function rather than create a new one each
    // time sumArray is called
    function add(a, b) {
        return a + b;
    }

    return function(arr) {
        return arr.reduce(add);
    };
}();

alert( sumArray([2, 3, 4]) );

Checking for empty or null JToken in a JObject

As of C# 7 you could also use this:

if (clientsParsed["objects"] is JArray clients)
{
    foreach (JObject item in clients.Children())
    {
        if (item["thisParameter"] as JToken itemToken)
        {
            command.Parameters["@MyParameter"].Value = JTokenToSql(itemToken);
        }
    }
}

The is Operator checks the Type and if its corrects the Value is inside the clients variable.

Installing specific laravel version with composer create-project

Have a look:

Laravel 4.2 Documentation

Syntax (Via Composer):

composer create-project laravel/laravel {directory} 4.2 --prefer-dist

Example:

composer create-project laravel/laravel my_laravel_dir 4.2

Where 4.2 is your version of laravel.

Note: It will take the latest version of Laravel automatically If you will not provide any version.

base_url() function not working in codeigniter

Prevent overwriting a file using cmd if exist

I noticed some issues with this that might be useful for someone just starting, or a somewhat inexperienced user, to know. First...

CD /D "C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Start Menu\Programs\"

two things one is that a /D after the CD may prove to be useful in making sure the directory is changed but it's not really necessary, second, if you are going to pass this from user to user you have to add, instead of your name, the code %username%, this makes the code usable on any computer, as long as they have your setup.exe file in the same location as you do on your computer. of course making sure of that is more difficult. also...

start \\filer\repo\lab\"software"\"myapp"\setup.exe

the start code here, can be set up like that, but the correct syntax is

start "\\filter\repo\lab\software\myapp\" setup.exe

This will run: setup.exe, located in: \filter\repo\lab...etc.\

Java: unparseable date exception

What you're basically doing here is relying on Date#toString() which already has a fixed pattern. To convert a Java Date object into another human readable String pattern, you need SimpleDateFormat#format().

private String modifyDateLayout(String inputDate) throws ParseException{
    Date date = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss z").parse(inputDate);
    return new SimpleDateFormat("dd.MM.yyyy HH:mm:ss").format(date);
}

By the way, the "unparseable date" exception can here only be thrown by SimpleDateFormat#parse(). This means that the inputDate isn't in the expected pattern "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss z". You'll probably need to modify the pattern to match the inputDate's actual pattern.

Update: Okay, I did a test:

public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
    String inputDate = "2010-01-04 01:32:27 UTC";
    String newDate = new Test().modifyDateLayout(inputDate);
    System.out.println(newDate);
}

This correctly prints:

03.01.2010 21:32:27

(I'm on GMT-4)

Update 2: as per your edit, you really got a ParseException on that. The most suspicious part would then be the timezone of UTC. Is this actually known at your Java environment? What Java version and what OS version are you using? Check TimeZone.getAvailableIDs(). There must be a UTC in between.

Zooming MKMapView to fit annotation pins?

Just sharing my observations on this:

If you are using xCode > 6 with "inferred" sizes for the screens (see "simulated metrics" on the file inspector) in storyboard, calling

- (void)showAnnotations:(NSArray *)annotations animated:(BOOL)animated

in viewDidLoad will result in a too large zoom level on iPhones with 4 inches because the layout for the map is still on the size of the wider screens from the storyboard.

You can move your call to showAnnotations... to viewDidAppear. Then the size of the map has already been adjusted to the smaller screen of an iPhone 4.

Or alternatively change the value "inferred" in the file inspector under "simulated metrics" to iphone 4-inch.

Java Set retain order?

Get the IP address of the machine

I found the ioctl solution problematic on os x (which is POSIX compliant so should be similiar to linux). However getifaddress() will let you do the same thing easily, it works fine for me on os x 10.5 and should be the same below.

I've done a quick example below which will print all of the machine's IPv4 address, (you should also check the getifaddrs was successful ie returns 0).

I've updated it show IPv6 addresses too.

#include <stdio.h>
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <ifaddrs.h>
#include <netinet/in.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <arpa/inet.h>

int main (int argc, const char * argv[]) {
    struct ifaddrs * ifAddrStruct=NULL;
    struct ifaddrs * ifa=NULL;
    void * tmpAddrPtr=NULL;

    getifaddrs(&ifAddrStruct);

    for (ifa = ifAddrStruct; ifa != NULL; ifa = ifa->ifa_next) {
        if (!ifa->ifa_addr) {
            continue;
        }
        if (ifa->ifa_addr->sa_family == AF_INET) { // check it is IP4
            // is a valid IP4 Address
            tmpAddrPtr=&((struct sockaddr_in *)ifa->ifa_addr)->sin_addr;
            char addressBuffer[INET_ADDRSTRLEN];
            inet_ntop(AF_INET, tmpAddrPtr, addressBuffer, INET_ADDRSTRLEN);
            printf("%s IP Address %s\n", ifa->ifa_name, addressBuffer);
        } else if (ifa->ifa_addr->sa_family == AF_INET6) { // check it is IP6
            // is a valid IP6 Address
            tmpAddrPtr=&((struct sockaddr_in6 *)ifa->ifa_addr)->sin6_addr;
            char addressBuffer[INET6_ADDRSTRLEN];
            inet_ntop(AF_INET6, tmpAddrPtr, addressBuffer, INET6_ADDRSTRLEN);
            printf("%s IP Address %s\n", ifa->ifa_name, addressBuffer);
        }
    }
    if (ifAddrStruct!=NULL) freeifaddrs(ifAddrStruct);
    return 0;
}

Call JavaScript function on DropDownList SelectedIndexChanged Event:

You can use the ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(); to call any of your javascript event/Client Event from the server. For example, to display a message using javascript's alert();, you can do this:

protected void ddl_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Response.write("<script>alert('This is my message');</script>");
 //----or alternatively and to be more proper
 ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, this.GetType(), "callJSFunction", "alert('This is my message')", true);
}

To be exact for you, do this...

protected void ddl_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
 ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, this.GetType(), "callJSFunction", "CalcTotalAmt();", true);
}

How can I get a favicon to show up in my django app?

Came across this while looking for help. I was trying to implement the favicon in my Django project and it was not showing -- wanted to add to the conversation.

While trying to implement the favicon in my Django project I renamed the 'favicon.ico' file to 'my_filename.ico' –– the image would not show. After renaming to 'favicon.ico' resolved the issue and graphic displayed. below is the code that resolved my issue:

<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/png" href="{% static 'img/favicon.ico' %}" />

Why does Git treat this text file as a binary file?

If git check-attr --all -- src/my_file.txt indicates that your file is flagged as binary, and you haven't set it as binary in .gitattributes, check for it in /.git/info/attributes.

Angularjs $http post file and form data

I recently wrote a directive that supports native multiple file uploads. The solution I've created relies on a service to fill the gap you've identified with the $http service. I've also included a directive, which provides an easy API for your angular module to use to post the files and data.

Example usage:

<lvl-file-upload
    auto-upload='false'
    choose-file-button-text='Choose files'
    upload-file-button-text='Upload files'
    upload-url='http://localhost:3000/files'
    max-files='10'
    max-file-size-mb='5'
    get-additional-data='getData(files)'
    on-done='done(files, data)'
    on-progress='progress(percentDone)'
    on-error='error(files, type, msg)'/>

You can find the code on github, and the documentation on my blog

It would be up to you to process the files in your web framework, but the solution I've created provides the angular interface to getting the data to your server. The angular code you need to write is to respond to the upload events

angular
    .module('app', ['lvl.directives.fileupload'])
    .controller('ctl', ['$scope', function($scope) {
        $scope.done = function(files,data} { /*do something when the upload completes*/ };
        $scope.progress = function(percentDone) { /*do something when progress is reported*/ };
        $scope.error = function(file, type, msg) { /*do something if an error occurs*/ };
        $scope.getAdditionalData = function() { /* return additional data to be posted to the server*/ };

    });

Can we pass parameters to a view in SQL?

No, a view is queried no differently to SELECTing from a table.

To do what you want, use a table-valued user-defined function with one or more parameters

PHP mysql insert date format

HTML:

<div class="form-group">
  <label for="pt_date" class="col-2 col-form-label">Date</label>
  <input class="form-control" type="date" value=<?php echo  date("Y-m-d") ;?> id="pt_date" name="pt_date">

How do I POST urlencoded form data with $http without jQuery?

The problem is the JSON string format, You can use a simple URL string in data:

$http({
    method: 'POST',
    url: url,
    headers: {'Content-Type': 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded'},
    data: 'username='+$scope.userName+'&password='+$scope.password
}).success(function () {});

typeof !== "undefined" vs. != null

You can also use the void operator to obtain an undefined value:

if (input !== void 0) {
    // do stuff
}

(And yes, as noted in another answer, this will throw an error if the variable was not declared, but this case can often be ruled out either by code inspection, or by code refactoring, e.g. using window.input !== void 0 for testing global variables or adding var input.)

If you need the port number also, you can use

Request.Url.Authority

Example:

string url = Request.Url.Authority + HttpContext.Current.Request.RawUrl.ToString();

if (Request.ServerVariables["HTTPS"] == "on")
{
    url = "https://" + url;
}
else
{
    url = "http://" + url;

How to debug apk signed for release?

Be sure that android:debuggable="true" is set in the application tag of your manifest file, and then:

  1. Plug your phone into your computer and enable USB debugging on the phone
  2. Open eclipse and a workspace containing the code for your app
  3. In Eclipse, go to Window->Show View->Devices
  4. Look at the Devices view which should now be visible, you should see your device listed
  5. If your device isn't listed, you'll have to track down the ADB drivers for your phone before continuing
  6. If you want to step through code, set a breakpoint somewhere in your app
  7. Open the app on your phone
  8. In the Devices view, expand the entry for your phone if it isn't already expanded, and look for your app's package name.
  9. Click on the package name, and in the top right of the Devices view you should see a green bug along with a number of other small buttons. Click the green bug.
  10. You should now be attached/debugging your app.

Batch script: how to check for admin rights

Anders solution worked for me but I wasn't sure how to invert it to get the opposite (when you weren't an admin).

Here's my solution. It has two cases an IF and ELSE case, and some ascii art to ensure people actually read it. :)

Minimal Version

Rushyo posted this solution here: How to detect if CMD is running as Administrator/has elevated privileges?

NET SESSION >nul 2>&1
IF %ERRORLEVEL% EQU 0 (
    ECHO Administrator PRIVILEGES Detected!
) ELSE (
    ECHO NOT AN ADMIN!
)

Version which adds an Error Messages, Pauses, and Exits

@rem ----[ This code block detects if the script is being running with admin PRIVILEGES If it isn't it pauses and then quits]-------
echo OFF
NET SESSION >nul 2>&1
IF %ERRORLEVEL% EQU 0 (

) ELSE (
   echo ######## ########  ########   #######  ########

Works on WinXP --> Win8 (including 32/64 bit versions).

Best programming based games

Core Wars is the classic, of course. But Rocky's Boots is another one. Imagine! There was a time (1982) when you could sell a commercial game based on logic gates!

First Or Create

An update:

As of Laravel 5.3 doing this in a single step is possible; the firstOrCreate method now accepts an optional second array as an argument.

The first array argument is the array on which the fields/values are matched, and the second array is the additional fields to use in the creation of the model if no match is found via matching the fields/values in the first array:

See documentation

Modifying a subset of rows in a pandas dataframe

Here is from pandas docs on advanced indexing:

The section will explain exactly what you need! Turns out df.loc (as .ix has been deprecated -- as many have pointed out below) can be used for cool slicing/dicing of a dataframe. And. It can also be used to set things.

df.loc[selection criteria, columns I want] = value

So Bren's answer is saying 'find me all the places where df.A == 0, select column B and set it to np.nan'

Image resizing client-side with JavaScript before upload to the server

The answer to this is yes - in HTML 5 you can resize images client-side using the canvas element. You can also take the new data and send it to a server. See this tutorial:

Java: How to convert String[] to List or Set

If you really want to use a set:

output:

ImageView - have height match width?

Maybe this will answer your question:

<ImageView
    android:id="@+id/cover_image"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:scaleType="fitCenter"
    android:adjustViewBounds="true" />

You can ignore the scaleType attribute for this particular situation.

Using multiple case statements in select query

There are two ways to write case statements, you seem to be using a combination of the two

case a.updatedDate
    when 1760 then 'Entered on' + a.updatedDate
    when 1710 then 'Viewed on' + a.updatedDate
    else 'Last Updated on' + a.updateDate
end

or

case
    when a.updatedDate = 1760 then 'Entered on' + a.updatedDate
    when a.updatedDate = 1710 then 'Viewed on' + a.updatedDate
    else 'Last Updated on' + a.updateDate
end

are equivalent. They may not work because you may need to convert date types to varchars to append them to other varchars.

Is there a way to follow redirects with command line cURL?

I had a similar problem. I am posting my solution here because I believe it might help one of the commenters.

For me, the obstacle was that the page required a login and then gave me a new URL through javascript. Here is what I had to do:

curl -c cookiejar -g -O -J -L -F "j_username=username" -F "j_password=password" <URL>

Note that j_username and j_password is the name of the fields for my website's login form. You will have to open the source of the webpage to see what the 'name' of the username field and the 'name' of the password field is in your case. After that I go an html file with java script in which the new URL was embedded. After parsing this out just resubmit with the new URL:

curl -c cookiejar -g -O -J -L -F "j_username=username" -F "j_password=password" <NEWURL>

try/catch with InputMismatchException creates infinite loop

To complement the AmitD answer:

Just copy/pasted your program and had this output:

Error!
Enter first num:
.... infinite times ....

As you can see, the instruction:

n1 = input.nextInt();

Is continuously throwing the Exception when your double number is entered, and that's because your stream is not cleared. To fix it, follow the AmitD answer.

iOS: Modal ViewController with transparent background

It's a bit of hacky way, but for me this code works (iOS 6):

AppDelegate *appDelegate = (AppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate];

[self presentViewController:self.signInViewController animated:YES completion:^{
    [self.signInViewController dismissViewControllerAnimated:NO completion:^{
        appDelegate.window.rootViewController.modalPresentationStyle = UIModalPresentationCurrentContext;
        [self presentViewController:self.signInViewController animated:NO completion:nil];
        appDelegate.window.rootViewController.modalPresentationStyle = UIModalPresentationFullScreen;

    }];
}];

This code works also on iPhone

Add column to dataframe with constant value

You can use insert to specify where you want to new column to be. In this case, I use 0 to place the new column at the left.

df.insert(0, 'Name', 'abc')

  Name Date Open High Low Close
0  abc  01-01-2015   565   600  400    450

remove all special characters in java

use [\\W+] or "[^a-zA-Z0-9]" as regex to match any special characters and also use String.replaceAll(regex, String) to replace the spl charecter with an empty string. remember as the first arg of String.replaceAll is a regex you have to escape it with a backslash to treat em as a literal charcter.

          String c= "hjdg$h&jk8^i0ssh6";
        Pattern pt = Pattern.compile("[^a-zA-Z0-9]");
        Matcher match= pt.matcher(c);
        while(match.find())
        {
            String s= match.group();
        c=c.replaceAll("\\"+s, "");
        }
        System.out.println(c);

Get folder name of the file in Python

You are looking to use dirname. If you only want that one directory, you can use os.path.basename,

When put all together it looks like this:

os.path.basename(os.path.dirname('dir/sub_dir/other_sub_dir/file_name.txt'))

That should get you "other_sub_dir"

The following is not the ideal approach, but I originally proposed,using os.path.split, and simply get the last item. which would look like this:

os.path.split(os.path.dirname('dir/sub_dir/other_sub_dir/file_name.txt'))[-1]

Replace console output in Python

In python 3 you can do this to print on the same line:

print('', end='\r')

Especially useful to keep track of the latest update and progress.

I would also recommend tqdm from here if one wants to see the progress of a loop. It prints the current iteration and total iterations as a progression bar with an expected time of finishing. Super useful and quick. Works for python2 and python3.

Removing nan values from an array

@jmetz's answer is probably the one most people need; however it yields a one-dimensional array, e.g. making it unusable to remove entire rows or columns in matrices.

To do so, one should reduce the logical array to one dimension, then index the target array. For instance, the following will remove rows which have at least one NaN value:

x = x[~numpy.isnan(x).any(axis=1)]

See more detail here.

Converting date between DD/MM/YYYY and YYYY-MM-DD?

Your example code is wrong. This works:

import datetime

datetime.datetime.strptime("21/12/2008", "%d/%m/%Y").strftime("%Y-%m-%d")

The call to strptime() parses the first argument according to the format specified in the second, so those two need to match. Then you can call strftime() to format the result into the desired final format.

} catch(Exception e){

What's the function like sum() but for multiplication? product()?

There isn't one built in, but it's simple to roll your own, as demonstrated here:

import operator
def prod(factors):
    return reduce(operator.mul, factors, 1)

How do you check if a string is not equal to an object or other string value in java?

you'll want to use && to see that it is not equal to "AM" AND not equal to "PM"

if(!TimeOfDayStringQ.equals("AM") && !TimeOfDayStringQ.equals("PM")) {
    System.out.println("Sorry, incorrect input.");
    System.exit(1);
}

to be clear you can also do

if(!(TimeOfDayStringQ.equals("AM") || TimeOfDayStringQ.equals("PM"))){
    System.out.println("Sorry, incorrect input.");
    System.exit(1);
}

to have the not (one or the other) phrase in the code (remember the (silent) brackets)

jQuery: print_r() display equivalent?

I've made a jQuery plugin for the equivalent of

<pre>
<?php echo print_r($data) ?>
</pre>

You can download it at https://github.com/tomasvanrijsse/jQuery.dump

count number of rows in a data frame in R based on group

Try using the count function in dplyr:

library(dplyr)
dat1_frame %>%
    count(MONTH.YEAR)

I am not sure how you got MONTH-YEAR as a variable name. My R version does not allow for such a variable name, so I replaced it with MONTH.YEAR.

As a side note, the mistake in your code was that dat1_frame %.% group_by(MONTH-YEAR) without a summarise function returns the original data frame without any modifications. So, you want to use

dat1_frame %>%
    group_by(MONTH.YEAR) %>%
    summarise(count=n())

Normalization in DOM parsing with java - how does it work?

As an extension to @JBNizet's answer for more technical users here's what implementation of org.w3c.dom.Node interface in com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.dom.ParentNode looks like, gives you the idea how it actually works.

public void normalize() {
    // No need to normalize if already normalized.
    if (isNormalized()) {
        return;
    }
    if (needsSyncChildren()) {
        synchronizeChildren();
    }
    ChildNode kid;
    for (kid = firstChild; kid != null; kid = kid.nextSibling) {
         kid.normalize();
    }
    isNormalized(true);
}

It traverses all the nodes recursively and calls kid.normalize()
This mechanism is overridden in org.apache.xerces.dom.ElementImpl

public void normalize() {
     // No need to normalize if already normalized.
     if (isNormalized()) {
         return;
     }
     if (needsSyncChildren()) {
         synchronizeChildren();
     }
     ChildNode kid, next;
     for (kid = firstChild; kid != null; kid = next) {
         next = kid.nextSibling;

         // If kid is a text node, we need to check for one of two
         // conditions:
         // 1) There is an adjacent text node
         // 2) There is no adjacent text node, but kid is
         //      an empty text node.
         if ( kid.getNodeType() == Node.TEXT_NODE )
         {
             // If an adjacent text node, merge it with kid
             if ( next!=null && next.getNodeType() == Node.TEXT_NODE )
             {
                 ((Text)kid).appendData(next.getNodeValue());
                 removeChild( next );
                 next = kid; // Don't advance; there might be another.
             }
             else
             {
                 // If kid is empty, remove it
                 if ( kid.getNodeValue() == null || kid.getNodeValue().length() == 0 ) {
                     removeChild( kid );
                 }
             }
         }

         // Otherwise it might be an Element, which is handled recursively
         else if (kid.getNodeType() == Node.ELEMENT_NODE) {
             kid.normalize();
         }
     }

     // We must also normalize all of the attributes
     if ( attributes!=null )
     {
         for( int i=0; i<attributes.getLength(); ++i )
         {
             Node attr = attributes.item(i);
             attr.normalize();
         }
     }

    // changed() will have occurred when the removeChild() was done,
    // so does not have to be reissued.

     isNormalized(true);
 }

Hope this saves you some time.

Select all elements with a "data-xxx" attribute without using jQuery

Pandas sort by group aggregate and column

Groupby A:

In [0]: grp = df.groupby('A')

Within each group, sum over B and broadcast the values using transform. Then sort by B:

In [1]: grp[['B']].transform(sum).sort('B')
Out[1]:
          B
2 -2.829710
5 -2.829710
1  0.253651
4  0.253651
0  0.551377
3  0.551377

Index the original df by passing the index from above. This will re-order the A values by the aggregate sum of the B values:

In [2]: sort1 = df.ix[grp[['B']].transform(sum).sort('B').index]

In [3]: sort1
Out[3]:
     A         B      C
2  baz -0.528172  False
5  baz -2.301539   True
1  bar -0.611756   True
4  bar  0.865408  False
0  foo  1.624345  False
3  foo -1.072969   True

Finally, sort the 'C' values within groups of 'A' using the sort=False option to preserve the A sort order from step 1:

In [4]: f = lambda x: x.sort('C', ascending=False)

In [5]: sort2 = sort1.groupby('A', sort=False).apply(f)

In [6]: sort2
Out[6]:
         A         B      C
A
baz 5  baz -2.301539   True
    2  baz -0.528172  False
bar 1  bar -0.611756   True
    4  bar  0.865408  False
foo 3  foo -1.072969   True
    0  foo  1.624345  False

Clean up the df index by using reset_index with drop=True:

In [7]: sort2.reset_index(0, drop=True)
Out[7]:
     A         B      C
5  baz -2.301539   True
2  baz -0.528172  False
1  bar -0.611756   True
4  bar  0.865408  False
3  foo -1.072969   True
0  foo  1.624345  False

How to send a stacktrace to log4j?

You pass the exception directly to the logger, e.g.

try {
   ...
} catch (Exception e) {
    log.error( "failed!", e );
}

It's up to log4j to render the stack trace.

What is the difference between 'E', 'T', and '?' for Java generics?

It's more convention than anything else.

  • T is meant to be a Type
  • E is meant to be an Element (List<E>: a list of Elements)
  • K is Key (in a Map<K,V>)
  • V is Value (as a return value or mapped value)

They are fully interchangeable (conflicts in the same declaration notwithstanding).

Closing Applications

System.Windows.Forms.Application.Exit() - Informs all message pumps that they must terminate, and then closes all application windows after the messages have been processed. This method stops all running message loops on all threads and closes all windows of the application. This method does not force the application to exit. The Exit() method is typically called from within a message loop, and forces Run() to return. To exit a message loop for the current thread only, call ExitThread(). This is the call to use if you are running a Windows Forms application. As a general guideline, use this call if you have called System.Windows.Forms.Application.Run().

System.Environment.Exit(exitCode) - Terminates this process and gives the underlying operating system the specified exit code. This call requires that you have SecurityPermissionFlag.UnmanagedCode permissions. If you do not, a SecurityException error occurs. This is the call to use if you are running a console application.

I hope it is best to use Application.Exit

Difference between == and === in JavaScript

=== and !== are strict comparison operators:

JavaScript has both strict and type-converting equality comparison. For strict equality the objects being compared must have the same type and:

  • Two strings are strictly equal when they have the same sequence of characters, same length, and same characters in corresponding positions.
  • Two numbers are strictly equal when they are numerically equal (have the same number value). NaN is not equal to anything, including NaN. Positive and negative zeros are equal to one another.
  • Two Boolean operands are strictly equal if both are true or both are false.
  • Two objects are strictly equal if they refer to the same Object.
  • Null and Undefined types are == (but not ===). [I.e. (Null==Undefined) is true but (Null===Undefined) is false]

Make element fixed on scroll

You want to use jQuery WayPoints. It is a very simple plugin and acheives exactly what you have described.

Most straightforward implementation

    $('.thing').waypoint(function(direction) {
  alert('Top of thing hit top of viewport.');
});

You will need to set some custom CSS to set exactly where it does become stuck, this is normal though for most ways to do it.

This page will show you all the examples and info that you need.

For future reference a example of it stopping and starting is this website. It is a "in the wild" example.

How to subtract X day from a Date object in Java?

@JigarJoshi it's the good answer, and of course also @Tim recommendation to use .joda-time.

I only want to add more possibilities to subtract days from a java.util.Date.

Apache-commons

One possibility is to use apache-commons-lang. You can do it using DateUtils as follows:

Date dateBefore30Days = DateUtils.addDays(new Date(),-30);

Of course add the commons-lang dependency to do only date subtract it's probably not a good options, however if you're already using commons-lang it's a good choice. There is also convenient methods to addYears,addMonths,addWeeks and so on, take a look at the api here.

Java 8

Another possibility is to take advantage of new LocalDate from Java 8 using minusDays(long days) method:

LocalDate dateBefore30Days = LocalDate.now(ZoneId.of("Europe/Paris")).minusDays(30);

Get enum values as List of String in Java 8

You could also do something as follow

public enum DAY {MON, TUES, WED, THU, FRI, SAT, SUN};
EnumSet.allOf(DAY.class).stream().map(e -> e.name()).collect(Collectors.toList())

or

EnumSet.allOf(DAY.class).stream().map(DAY::name).collect(Collectors.toList())

The main reason why I stumbled across this question is that I wanted to write a generic validator that validates whether a given string enum name is valid for a given enum type (Sharing in case anyone finds useful).

For the validation, I had to use Apache's EnumUtils library since the type of enum is not known at compile time.

@SuppressWarnings({ "unchecked", "rawtypes" })
public static void isValidEnumsValid(Class clazz, Set<String> enumNames) {
    Set<String> notAllowedNames = enumNames.stream()
            .filter(enumName -> !EnumUtils.isValidEnum(clazz, enumName))
            .collect(Collectors.toSet());

    if (notAllowedNames.size() > 0) {
        String validEnumNames = (String) EnumUtils.getEnumMap(clazz).keySet().stream()
            .collect(Collectors.joining(", "));

        throw new IllegalArgumentException("The requested values '" + notAllowedNames.stream()
                .collect(Collectors.joining(",")) + "' are not valid. Please select one more (case-sensitive) "
                + "of the following : " + validEnumNames);
    }
}

I was too lazy to write an enum annotation validator as shown in here https://stackoverflow.com/a/51109419/1225551

difference between System.out.println() and System.err.println()

Those commands use different output streams. By default both messages will be printed on console but it's possible for example to redirect one or both of these to a file.

java MyApp 2>errors.txt

This will redirect System.err to errors.txt file.

Python3 integer division

Try this:

Convert IEnumerable to DataTable

I also came across this problem. In my case, I didn't know the type of the IEnumerable. So the answers given above wont work. However, I solved it like this:

public static DataTable CreateDataTable(IEnumerable source)
    {
        var table = new DataTable();
        int index = 0;
        var properties = new List<PropertyInfo>();
        foreach (var obj in source)
        {
            if (index == 0)
            {
                foreach (var property in obj.GetType().GetProperties())
                {
                    if (Nullable.GetUnderlyingType(property.PropertyType) != null)
                    {
                        continue;
                    }
                    properties.Add(property);
                    table.Columns.Add(new DataColumn(property.Name, property.PropertyType));
                }
            }
            object[] values = new object[properties.Count];
            for (int i = 0; i < properties.Count; i++)
            {
                values[i] = properties[i].GetValue(obj);
            }
            table.Rows.Add(values);
            index++;
        }
        return table;
    }

Keep in mind that using this method, requires at least one item in the IEnumerable. If that's not the case, the DataTable wont create any columns.

Trimming text strings in SQL Server 2008

This function trims a string from left and right. Also it removes carriage returns from the string, an action which is not done by the LTRIM and RTRIM

IF OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.TRIM', N'FN') IS NOT NULL
    DROP FUNCTION dbo.TRIM;
GO
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.TRIM (@STR NVARCHAR(MAX)) RETURNS NVARCHAR(MAX)
BEGIN
    RETURN(LTRIM(RTRIM(REPLACE(REPLACE(@STR ,CHAR(10),''),CHAR(13),''))))
END;

How do I set a path in Visual Studio?

You have a couple of options:

  • You can add the path to the DLLs to the Executable files settings under Tools > Options > Projects and Solutions > VC++ Directories (but only for building, for executing or debugging here)
  • You can add them in your global PATH environment variable
  • You can start Visual Studio using a batch file as I described here and manipulate the path in that one
  • You can copy the DLLs into the executable file's directory :-)

Convert an array to string

You probably want something like this overload of String.Join:

String.Join<T> Method (String, IEnumerable<T>)

Docs:

In your example, you'd use

String.Join("", Client);

List<Object> and List<?>

List is an interface so you can't instanciate it. Use any of its implementatons instead e.g.

List<Object> object = new List<Object>();

About List : you can use any object as a generic param for it instance:

List<?> list = new ArrayList<String>();

or

List<?> list = new ArrayList<Integer>();

While using List<Object> this declaration is invalid because it will be type missmatch.

alertDialog.getButton(AlertDialog.BUTTON_POSITIVE).setTextColor(getResources().getColor(R.color.colorPrimary));
alertDialog.getButton(AlertDialog.BUTTON_NEGATIVE).setTextColor(getResources().getColor(R.color.colorPrimaryDark));

Recommended

I'll recommend adding a theme for AlertDialog in styles.xml so you don't have to write the same code again and again in each activity/dialog call. You can just create a style and apply that theme on the dialog box. So whenever you want to change the color of AlertDialog box, just change color in styles.xml and all the dialog boxes will be updated in the whole application.

<style name="AlertDialogTheme" parent="Theme.AppCompat.Light.Dialog.Alert">
    <item name="colorAccent">@color/colorPrimary</item>
</style>

And apply the theme in AlertDialog.Builder

AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(this, R.style.AlertDialogTheme);

How to keep the console window open in Visual C++?

For makefile projects, the accepted solution fails, due to a bug in Visual Studio (which is present at least up until version 2012 - I haven't yet tested 2013). This bug is detailed here.

In order to have the console pause after program termination on a makefile project, perform these steps (this may differ for versions other than 2010 - 2012):

1) Pass /SUBSYSTEM:CONSOLE to the linker. - EDIT: see below.

2) Open your project file (.vcxproj) in a text editor.

3) Inside the root <project> tag, insert the following:

<ItemDefinitionGroup>
  <Link>
    <SubSystem>Console</SubSystem>
  </Link>
</ItemDefinitionGroup>

4) Reload the project in your solution.

5) Run the program without debugging (CTRL + F5).

EDIT:

As per my comment below, setting the linker option /SUBSYSTEM:CONSOLE is actually irrelevant for makefile projects (and not necessarily even possible, if you are using a compiler other than MSVC). All that matters is that the setting is added to the .vcxproj file, as per step 3 above.

How get data from material-ui TextField, DropDownMenu components?

use the accepted answer / this was the answer to another (already deleted) question

@karopastal

add a ref attribute to your <TextField /> component and call getValue() on it, like this:

Component:

<TextField ref="myField" />

Using getValue:

this.refs.myField.getValue()

C++ - how to find the length of an integer

The number of digits of an integer n in any base is trivially obtained by dividing until you're done:

unsigned int number_of_digits = 0;

do {
     ++number_of_digits;
     n /= base;
} while (n);

Numeric for loop in Django templates

If the number is coming from a model, I found this to be a nice patch to the model:

def iterableQuantity(self):
    return range(self.quantity)

Update multiple columns in SQL

I did this in MySql and it updated multiple columns in a single record, so try this if you are using MySql as your server:

"UPDATE creditor_tb SET credit_amount='" & CDbl(cur_amount) & "'
                   , totalamount_to_pay='" & current_total & "',
        WHERE credit_id='" & lbcreditId.Text & "'".

However, I was coding in vb.net using MySql server, but you can take it to your favorite programming language as far as you are using MySql as your server.

Laravel Eloquent where field is X or null

Using coalesce() converts null to 0:

$query = Model::where('field1', 1)
    ->whereNull('field2')
    ->where(DB::raw('COALESCE(datefield_at,0)'), '<', $date)
;

Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints

Mine started working when I set AllowDBNull to True on a date field on a data table in the xsd file.

SQL Group By with an Order By

I don't know about MySQL, but in MS SQL, you can use the column index in the order by clause. I've done this before when doing counts with group bys as it tends to be easier to work with.

So

SELECT COUNT(id), `Tag` from `images-tags`
GROUP BY `Tag`
ORDER BY COUNT(id) DESC
LIMIT 20

Becomes

SELECT COUNT(id), `Tag` from `images-tags`
GROUP BY `Tag`
ORDER 1 DESC
LIMIT 20

Graphical DIFF programs for linux

Broadcast Receiver within a Service

The better pattern is to create a standalone BroadcastReceiver. This insures that your app can respond to the broadcast, whether or not the Service is running. In fact, using this pattern may remove the need for a constant-running Service altogether.

Register the BroadcastReceiver in your Manifest, and create a separate class/file for it.

Eg:

<receiver android:name=".FooReceiver" >
    <intent-filter >
        <action android:name="android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED" />
    </intent-filter>
</receiver>

When the receiver runs, you simply pass an Intent (Bundle) to the Service, and respond to it in onStartCommand().

Eg:

public class FooReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver {
    @Override
    public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
        // do your work quickly!
        // then call context.startService();
    }
}
