Differences between utf8 and latin1

UTF-8 is prepared for world domination, Latin1 isn't.

If you're trying to store non-Latin characters like Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, Russian, etc using Latin1 encoding, then they will end up as mojibake. You may find the introductory text of this article useful (and even more if you know a bit Java).

Note that full 4-byte UTF-8 support was only introduced in MySQL 5.5. Before that version, it only goes up to 3 bytes per character, not 4 bytes per character. So, it supported only the BMP plane and not e.g. the Emoji plane. If you want full 4-byte UTF-8 support, upgrade MySQL to at least 5.5 or go for another RDBMS like PostgreSQL. In MySQL 5.5+ it's called utf8mb4.

How to draw checkbox or tick mark in GitHub Markdown table?

Try adding a - before the [] or [x]. That's an - followed by a blank space .

Below is an example from Github blog.

### Solar System Exploration, 1950s – 1960s

- [ ] Mercury
- [x] Venus
- [x] Earth (Orbit/Moon)
- [x] Mars
- [ ] Jupiter
- [ ] Saturn
- [ ] Uranus
- [ ] Neptune
- [ ] Comet Haley

It appears like below:

Resultant Image

Here's how one could do the same in a table:

| Task           | Time required | Assigned to   | Current Status | Finished |
|----------------|---------------|---------------|----------------|-----------|
| Calendar Cache | > 5 hours  |  | in progress | - [x] ok?
| Object Cache   | > 5 hours  |  | in progress | [x] item1<br/>[ ] item2
| Object Cache   | > 5 hours  |  | in progress | <ul><li>- [x] item1</li><li>- [ ] item2</li></ul>
| Object Cache   | > 5 hours  |  | in progress | <ul><li>[x] item1</li><li>[ ] item2</li></ul>

- [x] works
- [x] works too

Here's how it looks:

Calculate summary statistics of columns in dataframe

Now there is the pandas_profiling package, which is a more complete alternative to df.describe().

If your pandas dataframe is df, the below will return a complete analysis including some warnings about missing values, skewness, etc. It presents histograms and correlation plots as well.

import pandas_profiling
pandas_profiling.ProfileReport(df)

See the example notebook detailing the usage.

How to enable CORS in AngularJs

Answered by myself.

CORS angular js + restEasy on POST

Well finally I came to this workaround: The reason it worked with IE is because IE sends directly a POST instead of first a preflight request to ask for permission. But I still don't know why the filter wasn't able to manage an OPTIONS request and sends by default headers that aren't described in the filter (seems like an override for that only case ... maybe a restEasy thing ...)

So I created an OPTIONS path in my rest service that rewrites the reponse and includes the headers in the response using response header

I'm still looking for the clean way to do it if anybody faced this before.

difference between new String[]{} and new String[] in java

{} defines the contents of the array, in this case it is empty. These would both have an array of three Strings

String[] array = {"element1","element2","element3"};
String[] array = new String[] {"element1","element2","element3"};

while [] on the expression side (right side of =) of a statement defines the size of an intended array, e.g. this would have an array of 10 locations to place Strings

String[] array = new String[10];

...But...

String array = new String[10]{}; //The line you mentioned above

Was wrong because you are defining an array of length 10 ([10]), then defining an array of length 0 ({}), and trying to set them to the same array reference (array) in one statement. Both cannot be set.

Additionally

The array should be defined as an array of a given type at the start of the statement like String[] array. String array = /* array value*/ is saying, set an array value to a String, not to an array of Strings.

MS Excel showing the formula in a cell instead of the resulting value

If you are using Excel 2013 Than do the following File > Option > Advanced > Under Display options for this worksheet: uncheck the checkbox before Show formulas in cells instead of their calculated results This should resolve the issue.

Python check if website exists

You can simply use stream method to not download the full file. As in latest Python3 you won't get urllib2. It's best to use proven request method. This simple function will solve your problem.

def uri_exists(uri):
    r = requests.get(url, stream=True)
    if r.status_code == 200:
        return True
    else:
        return False

Java Initialize an int array in a constructor

private int[] data = new int[3];

This already initializes your array elements to 0. You don't need to repeat that again in the constructor.

In your constructor it should be:

data = new int[]{0, 0, 0};

java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError Unsupported major.minor version 51.0

I encountered the same issue, when jdk 1.7 was used to compile then jre 1.4 was used for execution.

My solution was to set environment variable PATH by adding pathname C:\glassfish3\jdk7\bin in front of the existing PATH setting. The updated value is "C:\glassfish3\jdk7\bin;C:\Sun\SDK\bin". After the update, the problem was gone.

Copy all values from fields in one class to another through reflection

My solution:

public static <T > void copyAllFields(T to, T from) {
        Class<T> clazz = (Class<T>) from.getClass();
        // OR:
        // Class<T> clazz = (Class<T>) to.getClass();
        List<Field> fields = getAllModelFields(clazz);

        if (fields != null) {
            for (Field field : fields) {
                try {
                    field.setAccessible(true);
                    field.set(to,field.get(from));
                } catch (IllegalAccessException e) {
                    e.printStackTrace();
                }
            }
        }
    }

public static List<Field> getAllModelFields(Class aClass) {
    List<Field> fields = new ArrayList<>();
    do {
        Collections.addAll(fields, aClass.getDeclaredFields());
        aClass = aClass.getSuperclass();
    } while (aClass != null);
    return fields;
}

Output data with no column headings using PowerShell

The -expandproperty does not work with more than 1 object. You can use this one :

Select-Object Name | ForEach-Object {$_.Name}

If there is more than one value then :

Select-Object Name, Country | ForEach-Object {$_.Name + " " + $Country}

Accessing dict keys like an attribute?

As noted by Doug there's a Bunch package which you can use to achieve the obj.key functionality. Actually there's a newer version called

NeoBunch

It has though a great feature converting your dict to a NeoBunch object through its neobunchify function. I use Mako templates a lot and passing data as NeoBunch objects makes them far more readable, so if you happen to end up using a normal dict in your Python program but want the dot notation in a Mako template you can use it that way:

from mako.template import Template
from neobunch import neobunchify

mako_template = Template(filename='mako.tmpl', strict_undefined=True)
data = {'tmpl_data': [{'key1': 'value1', 'key2': 'value2'}]}
with open('out.txt', 'w') as out_file:
    out_file.write(mako_template.render(**neobunchify(data)))

And the Mako template could look like:

% for d in tmpl_data:
Column1     Column2
${d.key1}   ${d.key2}
% endfor

Assembly Language - How to do Modulo?

If you don't care too much about performance and want to use the straightforward way, you can use either DIV or IDIV.

DIV or IDIV takes only one operand where it divides a certain register with this operand, the operand can be register or memory location only.

When operand is a byte: AL = AL / operand, AH = remainder (modulus).

Ex:

MOV AL,31h ; Al = 31h

DIV BL ; Al (quotient)= 08h, Ah(remainder)= 01h

when operand is a word: AX = (AX) / operand, DX = remainder (modulus).

Ex:

MOV AX,9031h ; Ax = 9031h

DIV BX ; Ax=1808h & Dx(remainder)= 01h

Meaning of end='' in the statement print("\t",end='')?

The default value of end is \n meaning that after the print statement it will print a new line. So simply stated end is what you want to be printed after the print statement has been executed

Eg: - print ("hello",end=" +") will print hello +

Difference between Destroy and Delete

Basically destroy runs any callbacks on the model while delete doesn't.

From the Rails API:

  • ActiveRecord::Persistence.delete

    Deletes the record in the database and freezes this instance to reflect that no changes should be made (since they can't be persisted). Returns the frozen instance.

    The row is simply removed with an SQL DELETE statement on the record's primary key, and no callbacks are executed.

    To enforce the object's before_destroy and after_destroy callbacks or any :dependent association options, use #destroy.

  • ActiveRecord::Persistence.destroy

    Deletes the record in the database and freezes this instance to reflect that no changes should be made (since they can't be persisted).

    There's a series of callbacks associated with destroy. If the before_destroy callback return false the action is cancelled and destroy returns false. See ActiveRecord::Callbacks for further details.

How to set height property for SPAN

this is to make display:inline-block work in all browsers:

Quirkly enough, in IE (6/7) , if you trigger hasLayout with "zoom:1" and then set the display to inline, it behaves as an inline block.

.inline-block {
    display: inline-block;
    zoom: 1;
    *display: inline;
}

How do I pass a datetime value as a URI parameter in asp.net mvc?

Split out the Year, Month, Day Hours and Mins

routes.MapRoute(
            "MyNewRoute",
            "{controller}/{action}/{Year}/{Month}/{Days}/{Hours}/{Mins}",
            new { controller="YourControllerName", action="YourActionName"}
        );

Use a cascading If Statement to Build up the datetime from the parameters passed into the Action

    ' Build up the date from the passed url or use the current date
    Dim tCurrentDate As DateTime = Nothing
    If Year.HasValue Then
        If Month.HasValue Then
            If Day.HasValue Then
                tCurrentDate = New Date(Year, Month, Day)
            Else
                tCurrentDate = New Date(Year, Month, 1)
            End If
        Else
            tCurrentDate = New Date(Year, 1, 1)
        End If
    Else
        tCurrentDate = StartOfThisWeek(Date.Now)
    End If

(Apologies for the vb.net but you get the idea :P)

How to combine two or more querysets in a Django view?

This recursive function concatenates array of querysets into one queryset.

def merge_query(ar):

How to use ADB Shell when Multiple Devices are connected? Fails with "error: more than one device and emulator"

For Windows, here's a quick 1 liner example of how to install a file..on multiple devices

FOR /F "skip=1"  %x IN ('adb devices') DO start adb -s %x install -r myandroidapp.apk

If you plan on including this in a batch file, replace %x with %%x, as below

FOR /F "skip=1"  %%x IN ('adb devices') DO start adb -s %%x install -r myandroidapp.apk

How to fire AJAX request Periodically?

I tried the below code,

    function executeQuery() {
  $.ajax({
    url: 'url/path/here',
    success: function(data) {
      // do something with the return value here if you like
    }
  });
  setTimeout(executeQuery, 5000); // you could choose not to continue on failure...
}

$(document).ready(function() {
  // run the first time; all subsequent calls will take care of themselves
  setTimeout(executeQuery, 5000);
});

This didn't work as expected for the specified interval,the page didn't load completely and the function was been called continuously. Its better to call setTimeout(executeQuery, 5000); outside executeQuery() in a separate function as below,

function executeQuery() {
  $.ajax({
    url: 'url/path/here',
    success: function(data) {
      // do something with the return value here if you like
    }
  });
  updateCall();
}

function updateCall(){
setTimeout(function(){executeQuery()}, 5000);
}

$(document).ready(function() {
  executeQuery();
});

This worked exactly as intended.

What is the use of GO in SQL Server Management Studio & Transact SQL?

Since Management Studio 2005 it seems that you can use GO with an int parameter, like:

INSERT INTO mytable DEFAULT VALUES
GO 10

The above will insert 10 rows into mytable. Generally speaking, GO will execute the related sql commands n times.

JDK on OSX 10.7 Lion

You can download the 10.7 Lion JDK from http://connect.apple.com.

  1. Sign in and click the java section on the right.

  2. The jdk is installed into a different location then previous. This will result in IDEs (such as Eclipse) being unable to locate source code and javadocs.

  3. At the time of writing the JDK ended up here:

    /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0_26-b03-383.jdk/Contents/Home

  4. Open up eclipse preferences and go to Java --> Installed JREs page

  5. Rather than use the "JVM Contents (MacOS X Default) we will need to use the JDK location

  6. At the time of writing Search is not aware of the new JDK location; we we will need to click on the Add button

  7. From the Add JRE wizard choose "MacOS X VM" for the JRE Type

  8. For the JRE Definition Page we need to fill in the following:

    • JRE Home: /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0_26-b03-383.jdk/Contents/Home
  9. The other fields will now auto fill, with the default JRE name being "Home". You can quickly correct this to something more meaningful:

    • JRE name: System JDK
  10. Finish the wizard and return to the Installed JREs page

  11. Choose "System JDK" from the list

  12. You can now develop normally with:

    • javadocs correctly shown for base classes
    • source code correctly shown when debugging

How should I throw a divide by zero exception in Java without actually dividing by zero?

Do this:

How to add a second css class with a conditional value in razor MVC 4

I believe that there can still be and valid logic on views. But for this kind of things I agree with @BigMike, it is better placed on the model. Having said that the problem can be solved in three ways:

Your answer (assuming this works, I haven't tried this):

<div class="details @(@Model.Details.Count > 0 ? "show" : "hide")">

Second option:

@if (Model.Details.Count > 0) {
    <div class="details show">
}
else {
    <div class="details hide">
}

Third option:

<div class="@("details " + (Model.Details.Count>0 ? "show" : "hide"))">

How to limit depth for recursive file list?

Checkout the -maxdepth flag of find

Here I used 1 as max level depth, -type d means find only directories, which then ls -ld lists contents of, in long format.

How to determine the content size of a UIWebView?

Xcode8 swift3.1:

  1. Set webView height to 0 first.

MySQL export into outfile : CSV escaping chars

Here is what worked here: Simulates Excel 2003 (Save as CSV format)

SELECT
REPLACE( IFNULL(notes, ''), '\r\n' , '\n' )   AS notes
FROM sometables
INTO OUTFILE '/tmp/test.csv'
FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' ENCLOSED BY '"' ESCAPED BY '"'
LINES TERMINATED BY '\r\n';
  1. Excel saves \r\n for line separators.
  2. Excel saves \n for newline characters within column data
  3. Have to replace \r\n inside your data first otherwise Excel will think its a start of the next line.

C++ Dynamic Shared Library on Linux

The following shows an example of a shared class library shared.[h,cpp] and a main.cpp module using the library. It's a very simple example and the makefile could be made much better. But it works and may help you:

shared.h defines the class:

class myclass {
   int myx;

  public:

    myclass() { myx=0; }
    void setx(int newx);
    int  getx();
};

shared.cpp defines the getx/setx functions:

#include "shared.h"

void myclass::setx(int newx) { myx = newx; }
int  myclass::getx() { return myx; }

main.cpp uses the class,

#include <iostream>
#include "shared.h"

using namespace std;

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
  myclass m;

  cout << m.getx() << endl;
  m.setx(10);
  cout << m.getx() << endl;
}

and the makefile that generates libshared.so and links main with the shared library:

main: libshared.so main.o
    $(CXX) -o main  main.o -L. -lshared

libshared.so: shared.cpp
    $(CXX) -fPIC -c shared.cpp -o shared.o
    $(CXX) -shared  -Wl,-soname,libshared.so -o libshared.so shared.o

clean:
    $rm *.o *.so

To actual run 'main' and link with libshared.so you will probably need to specify the load path (or put it in /usr/local/lib or similar).

The following specifies the current directory as the search path for libraries and runs main (bash syntax):

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.
./main

To see that the program is linked with libshared.so you can try ldd:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ldd main

Prints on my machine:

  ~/prj/test/shared$ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ldd main
    linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xb7f88000)
    libshared.so => ./libshared.so (0xb7f85000)
    libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0xb7e74000)
    libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0xb7e4e000)
    libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xb7e41000)
    libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0xb7cfa000)
    /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7f89000)

How would you make two <div>s overlap?

If you want the logo to take space, you are probably better of floating it left and then moving down the content using margin, sort of like this:

#logo {
    float: left;
    margin: 0 10px 10px 20px;
}

#content {
    margin: 10px 0 0 10px;
}

or whatever margin you want.

Getting number of elements in an iterator in Python

There are two ways to get the length of "something" on a computer.

The first way is to store a count - this requires anything that touches the file/data to modify it (or a class that only exposes interfaces -- but it boils down to the same thing).

The other way is to iterate over it and count how big it is.

JavaScript - Replace all commas in a string

var mystring = "this,is,a,test"
mystring.replace(/,/g, "newchar");

Use the global(g) flag

How to pass multiple parameter to @Directives (@Components) in Angular with TypeScript?

to pass many options you can pass a object to a @Input decorator with custom data in a single line.

In the template

<li *ngFor = 'let opt of currentQuestion.options'
                [selectable] = 'opt'
                [myOptions] ="{first: opt.val1, second: opt.val2}" // these are your multiple parameters
                (selectedOption) = 'onOptionSelection($event)' >
     {{opt.option}}
</li>

so in Directive class

@Directive({
  selector: '[selectable]'
})

export class SelectableDirective{
  private el: HTMLElement;
  @Input('selectable') option:any;
  @Input('myOptions') data;

How to remove space from string?

You can also use echo to remove blank spaces, either at the beginning or at the end of the string, but also repeating spaces inside the string.

$ myVar="    kokor    iiij     ook      "
$ echo "$myVar"
    kokor    iiij     ook
$ myVar=`echo $myVar`
$
$ # myVar is not set to "kokor iiij ook"
$ echo "$myVar"
kokor iiij ook

How to use goto statement correctly

If you look up continue and break they accept a "Label". Experiment with that. Goto itself won't work.

public class BreakContinueWithLabel {

    public static void main(String args[]) {

        int[] numbers= new int[]{100,18,21,30};

        //Outer loop checks if number is multiple of 2
        OUTER:  //outer label
        for(int i = 0; i<numbers.length; i++){
            if(i % 2 == 0){
                System.out.println("Odd number: " + i +
                                   ", continue from OUTER label");
                continue OUTER;
            }

            INNER:
            for(int j = 0; j<numbers.length; j++){
                System.out.println("Even number: " + i +
                                   ", break  from INNER label");
                break INNER;
            }
        }
    }

Detecting IE11 using CSS Capability/Feature Detection

Perhaps Layout Engine v0.7.0 is a good solution for your situation. It uses browser feature detection and can detect not only IE11 and IE10, but also IE9, IE8, and IE7. It also detects other popular browsers, including some mobile browsers. It adds a class to the html tag, is easy to use, and it's performed well under some fairly deep testing.

How do I 'svn add' all unversioned files to SVN?

This method should handle filenames which have any number/combination of spaces in them...

svn status /home/websites/website1 | grep -Z "^?" | sed s/^?// | sed s/[[:space:]]*// | xargs -i svn add \"{}\"

Here is an explanation of what that command does:

  • List all changed files.
  • Limit this list to lines with '?' at the beginning - i.e. new files.
  • Remove the '?' character at the beginning of the line.
  • Remove the spaces at the beginning of the line.
  • Pipe the filenames into xargs to run the svn add multiple times.

Use the -i argument to xargs to handle being able to import files names with spaces into 'svn add' - basically, -i sets {} to be used as a placeholder so we can put the " characters around the filename used by 'svn add'.

An advantage of this method is that this should handle filenames with spaces in them.

check if command was successful in a batch file

Goodness I had a hard time finding the answer to this... Here it is:

cd thisDoesntExist

  echo Huh.

What is SaaS, PaaS and IaaS? With examples

I know this question has been answered a while ago but this could help.

What do the following terms mean?

SaaS

Software as a Service - Essentially, any application that runs with its contents from the cloud is referred to as Software as a Service, As long as you do not own it.

Some examples are Gmail, Netflix, OneDrive etc.

AUDIENCE: End users, everybody

IaaS

Infrastructure as a Service means that the provider allows a portion of their computing power to its customers, It is purchased by the potency of the computing power and they are bundled in Virtual Machines. A company like Google Cloud platform, AWS, Alibaba Cloud can be referred to as IaaS providers because they sell processing powers (servers, storage, networking) to their users in terms of Virtual Machines.

AUDIENCE: IT professionals, System Admins

PaaS

Platform as a Service is more like the middle-man between IaaS and SaaS, Instead of a customer having to deal with the nitty-gritty of servers, networks and storage, everything is readily available by the PaaS providers. Essentially a development environment is initialized to make building applications easier.

Examples would be Heroku, AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Google App Engine etc

AUDIENCE: Software developers.

There are various cloud services available today, such as Amazon's EC2 and AWS, Apache Hadoop, Microsoft Azure and many others. Which category does each belong to and why?

Amazon EC2 and AWS - is an Infrastructure as a Service because you'll need System Administrators to manage the working process of your operating system. There is no abstraction to build a fully featured app ordinarily. Microsoft Azure would also fall under this category following the aforementioned guidelines.

I really haven't used Apache Hadoop, so I really cannot say.

pop/remove items out of a python tuple

Yes we can do it. First convert the tuple into an list, then delete the element in the list after that again convert back into tuple.

Demo:

my_tuple = (10, 20, 30, 40, 50)

# converting the tuple to the list
my_list = list(my_tuple)
print my_list  # output: [10, 20, 30, 40, 50]

# Here i wanna delete second element "20"
my_list.pop(1) # output: [10, 30, 40, 50]
# As you aware that pop(1) indicates second position

# Here i wanna remove the element "50"
my_list.remove(50) # output: [10, 30, 40]

# again converting the my_list back to my_tuple
my_tuple = tuple(my_list)

print my_tuple # output: (10, 30, 40)

Ruby, remove last N characters from a string?

Dropping the last n characters is the same as keeping the first length - n characters.

Active Support includes String#first and String#last methods which provide a convenient way to keep or drop the first/last n characters:

require 'active_support/core_ext/string/access'

"foobarbaz".first(3)  # => "foo"
"foobarbaz".first(-3) # => "foobar"
"foobarbaz".last(3)   # => "baz"
"foobarbaz".last(-3)  # => "barbaz"

Update query PHP MySQL

You have to have single quotes around any VARCHAR content in your queries. So your update query should be:

mysql_query("UPDATE blogEntry SET content = '$udcontent', title = '$udtitle' WHERE id = $id");

Also, it is bad form to update your database directly with the content from a POST. You should sanitize your incoming data with the mysql_real_escape_string function.

How to create a .NET DateTime from ISO 8601 format

Although MSDN says that "s" and "o" formats reflect the standard, they seem to be able to parse only a limited subset of it. Especially it is a problem if the string contains time zone specification. (Neither it does for basic ISO8601 formats, or reduced precision formats - however this is not exactly your case.) That is why I make use of custom format strings when it comes to parsing ISO8601. Currently my preferred snippet is:

static readonly string[] formats = {
    // Basic formats
    "yyyyMMddTHHmmsszzz",
    "yyyyMMddTHHmmsszz",
    "yyyyMMddTHHmmssZ",
    // Extended formats
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mm:sszzz",
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mm:sszz",
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mm:ssZ",
    // All of the above with reduced accuracy
    "yyyyMMddTHHmmzzz",
    "yyyyMMddTHHmmzz",
    "yyyyMMddTHHmmZ",
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mmzzz",
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mmzz",
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mmZ",
    // Accuracy reduced to hours
    "yyyyMMddTHHzzz",
    "yyyyMMddTHHzz",
    "yyyyMMddTHHZ",
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHHzzz",
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHHzz",
    "yyyy-MM-ddTHHZ"
    };

public static DateTime ParseISO8601String ( string str )
{
    return DateTime.ParseExact ( str, formats,
        CultureInfo.InvariantCulture, DateTimeStyles.None );
}

If you don't mind parsing TZ-less strings (I do), you can add an "s" line to greatly extend the number of covered format alterations.

I think is better to change the logical function in the plugin. Around row 552 i change this:

                return $(this).css('z-index') !== 'auto';
            }).first().css('z-index'))+10;

into this:

            var zIndex = parseInt(this.element.parents().filter(function(){
                return $(this).css('z-index') !== 'auto';
            }).first().css('z-index')) + 10 * 1000; //think is enought

What is a good way to handle exceptions when trying to read a file in python?

I guess I misunderstood what was being asked. Re-re-reading, it looks like Tim's answer is what you want. Let me just add this, however: if you want to catch an exception from open, then open has to be wrapped in a try. If the call to open is in the header of a with, then the with has to be in a try to catch the exception. There's no way around that.

So the answer is either: "Tim's way" or "No, you're doing it correctly.".

How do I create a new Git branch from an old commit?

git checkout -b NEW_BRANCH_NAME COMMIT_ID

This will create a new branch called 'NEW_BRANCH_NAME' and check it out.

("check out" means "to switch to the branch")

git branch NEW_BRANCH_NAME COMMIT_ID

This just creates the new branch without checking it out.

in the comments many people seem to prefer doing this in two steps. here's how to do so in two steps:

git checkout COMMIT_ID
# you are now in the "detached head" state
git checkout -b NEW_BRANCH_NAME

Get time of specific timezone

The best way to do this is to use getLocaleString, like this:

Create a date object:

date = new Date(0)

If you are in Berlin, this should convert to this string:

Thu Jan 01 1970 01:00:00 GMT+0100 (CET)

Get the hours in Athens:

date.toLocaleString('de-DE', {hour: '2-digit',   hour12: false, timeZone: 'Europe/Athens' })

'02'

Get the hours in Shanghai:

date.toLocaleString('de-DE', {hour: '2-digit',   hour12: false, timeZone: 'Asia/Shanghai' })

'08'

SQL - using alias in Group By

Caution that using alias in the Group By (for services that support it, such as postgres) can have unintended results. For example, if you create an alias that already exists in the inner statement, the Group By will chose the inner field name.

-- Working example in postgres
select col1 as col1_1, avg(col3) as col2_1
from
    (select gender as col1, maritalstatus as col2,
    yearlyincome as col3 from customer) as layer_1
group by col1_1;

-- Failing example in postgres
select col2 as col1, avg(col3)
from
    (select gender as col1, maritalstatus as col2,
    yearlyincome as col3 from customer) as layer_1
group by col1;

Java 8 Lambda function that throws exception?

By default, Java 8 Function does not allow to throw exception and as suggested in multiple answers there are many ways to achieve it, one way is:

@FunctionalInterface
public interface FunctionWithException<T, R, E extends Exception> {
    R apply(T t) throws E;
}

Define as:

private FunctionWithException<String, Integer, IOException> myMethod = (str) -> {
    if ("abc".equals(str)) {
        throw new IOException();
    }
  return 1;
};

And add throws or try/catch the same exception in caller method.

Effectively use async/await with ASP.NET Web API

You are not leveraging async / await effectively because the request thread will be blocked while executing the synchronous method ReturnAllCountries()

The thread that is assigned to handle a request will be idly waiting while ReturnAllCountries() does it's work.

If you can implement ReturnAllCountries() to be asynchronous, then you would see scalability benefits. This is because the thread could be released back to the .NET thread pool to handle another request, while ReturnAllCountries() is executing. This would allow your service to have higher throughput, by utilizing threads more efficiently.

Synchronous request in Node.js

I'd use a recursive function with a list of apis

var host = 'www.example.com';

function callAPIs ( host, APIs ) {
  var API = APIs.shift();

    var body = '';
    res.on('data', function (d) {
      body += d;
    });
    res.on('end', function () {
      if( APIs.length ) {
        callAPIs ( host, APIs );
      }
    });
  });
}

callAPIs( host, APIs );

edit: request version

var request = require('request');
var APIs = [ '/api_1.php', '/api_2.php', '/api_3.php' ];
var host = 'www.example.com';
var APIs = APIs.map(function (api) {
  return 'http://' + host + api;
});

function callAPIs ( host, APIs ) {
  var API = APIs.shift();
  request(API, function(err, res, body) {
    if( APIs.length ) {
      callAPIs ( host, APIs );
    }
  });
}

callAPIs( host, APIs );

edit: request/async version

var request = require('request');
var async = require('async');
var APIs = [ '/api_1.php', '/api_2.php', '/api_3.php' ];
var host = 'www.example.com';
var APIs = APIs.map(function (api) {
  return 'http://' + host + api;
});

async.eachSeries(function (API, cb) {
  request(API, function (err, res, body) {
    cb(err);
  });
}, function (err) {
  //called when all done, or error occurs
});

Display a RecyclerView in Fragment

Make sure that you have the correct layout, and that the RecyclerView id is inside the layout. Otherwise, you will be getting this error. I had the same problem, then I noticed the layout was wrong.

         @Override
         public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
             Bundle savedInstanceState) {

==> make sure you are getting the correct layout here. R.layout...

             View rootView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_colors, container, false);

apache server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting

Here's an approach that could resolve your problem, and if not would help with troubleshooting.

  1. Create a second Apache virtual server identical to the current one

  2. Send all "normal" user traffic to the original virtual server

  3. Send special or long-running traffic to the new virtual server

Special or long-running traffic could be report-generation, maintenance ops or anything else you don't expect to complete in <<1 second. This can happen serving APIs, not just web pages.

If your resource utilization is low but you still exceed MaxClients, the most likely answer is you have new connections arriving faster than they can be serviced. Putting any slow operations on a second virtual server will help prove if this is the case. Use the Apache access logs to quantify the effect.

Handling Enter Key in Vue.js

Event Modifiers

You can refer to event modifiers in vuejs to prevent form submission on enter key.

It is a very common need to call event.preventDefault() or event.stopPropagation() inside event handlers.

Although we can do this easily inside methods, it would be better if the methods can be purely about data logic rather than having to deal with DOM event details.

To address this problem, Vue provides event modifiers for v-on. Recall that modifiers are directive postfixes denoted by a dot.

<form v-on:submit.prevent="<method>">
  ...
</form>

As the documentation states, this is syntactical sugar for e.preventDefault() and will stop the unwanted form submission on press of enter key.

Here is a working fiddle.

Illegal pattern character 'T' when parsing a date string to java.util.Date

There are two answers above up-to-now and they are both long (and tl;dr too short IMHO), so I write summary from my experience starting to use new java.time library (applicable as noted in other answers to Java version 8+). ISO 8601 sets standard way to write dates: YYYY-MM-DD so the format of date-time is only as below (could be 0, 3, 6 or 9 digits for milliseconds) and no formatting string necessary:

import java.time.Instant;
public static void main(String[] args) {
    String date="2010-10-02T12:23:23Z";
    try {
        Instant myDate = Instant.parse(date);
    } catch (ParseException e) {
        // TODO Auto-generated catch block
        e.printStackTrace();
    }
}

I did not need it, but as getting year is in code from the question, then:
it is trickier, cannot be done from Instant directly, can be done via Calendar in way of questions Get integer value of the current year in Java and Converting java.time to Calendar but IMHO as format is fixed substring is more simple to use:

myDate.toString().substring(0,4);

Split / Explode a column of dictionaries into separate columns with pandas

my_df = pd.DataFrame.from_dict(my_dict, orient='index', columns=['my_col'])

.. would have parsed the dict properly (putting each dict key into a separate df column, and key values into df rows), so the dicts would not get squashed into a single column in the first place.

Representing null in JSON

Let's evaluate the parsing of each:

http://jsfiddle.net/brandonscript/Y2dGv/

var json1 = '{}';
var json2 = '{"myCount": null}';
var json3 = '{"myCount": 0}';
var json4 = '{"myString": ""}';
var json5 = '{"myString": "null"}';
var json6 = '{"myArray": []}';

console.log(JSON.parse(json1)); // {}
console.log(JSON.parse(json2)); // {myCount: null}
console.log(JSON.parse(json3)); // {myCount: 0}
console.log(JSON.parse(json4)); // {myString: ""}
console.log(JSON.parse(json5)); // {myString: "null"}
console.log(JSON.parse(json6)); // {myArray: []}

The tl;dr here:

The fragment in the json2 variable is the way the JSON spec indicates null should be represented. But as always, it depends on what you're doing -- sometimes the "right" way to do it doesn't always work for your situation. Use your judgement and make an informed decision.

JSON1 {}

This returns an empty object. There is no data there, and it's only going to tell you that whatever key you're looking for (be it myCount or something else) is of type undefined.

JSON2 {"myCount": null}

In this case, myCount is actually defined, albeit its value is null. This is not the same as both "not undefined and not null", and if you were testing for one condition or the other, this might succeed whereas JSON1 would fail.

This is the definitive way to represent null per the JSON spec.

JSON3 {"myCount": 0}

In this case, myCount is 0. That's not the same as null, and it's not the same as false. If your conditional statement evaluates myCount > 0, then this might be worthwhile to have. Moreover, if you're running calculations based on the value here, 0 could be useful. If you're trying to test for null however, this is actually not going to work at all.

JSON4 {"myString": ""}

In this case, you're getting an empty string. Again, as with JSON2, it's defined, but it's empty. You could test for if (obj.myString == "") but you could not test for null or undefined.

JSON5 {"myString": "null"}

This is probably going to get you in trouble, because you're setting the string value to null; in this case, obj.myString == "null" however it is not == null.

JSON6 {"myArray": []}

This will tell you that your array myArray exists, but it's empty. This is useful if you're trying to perform a count or evaluation on myArray. For instance, say you wanted to evaluate the number of photos a user posted - you could do myArray.length and it would return 0: defined, but no photos posted.

What is a stack pointer used for in microprocessors?

On some CPUs, there is a dedicated set of registers for the stack. When a call instruction is executed, one register is loaded with the program counter at the same time as a second register is loaded with the contents of the first, a third register is be loaded with the second, and a fourth with the third, etc. When a return instruction is executed, the program counter is latched with the contents of the first stack register and the same time as that register is latched from the second; that second register is loaded from a third, etc. Note that such hardware stacks tend to be rather small (many the smaller PIC series micros, for example, have a two-level stack).

While a hardware stack does have some advantages (push and pop don't add any time to a call/return, for example) having registers which can be loaded with two sources adds cost. If the stack gets very big, it will be cheaper to replace the push-pull registers with an addressable memory. Even if a small dedicated memory is used for this, it's cheaper to have 32 addressable registers and a 5-bit pointer register with increment/decrement logic, than it is to have 32 registers each with two inputs. If an application might need more stack than would easily fit on the CPU, it's possible to use a stack pointer along with logic to store/fetch stack data from main RAM.

Switch statement fallthrough in C#?

A jump statement such as a break is required after each case block, including the last block whether it is a case statement or a default statement. With one exception, (unlike the C++ switch statement), C# does not support an implicit fall through from one case label to another. The one exception is if a case statement has no code.

jQuery.getJSON - Access-Control-Allow-Origin Issue

It's simple, use $.getJSON() function and in your URL just include

callback=?

as a parameter. That will convert the call to JSONP which is necessary to make cross-domain calls. More info: http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.getJSON/

Process escape sequences in a string in Python

unicode_escape doesn't work in general

It turns out that the string_escape or unicode_escape solution does not work in general -- particularly, it doesn't work in the presence of actual Unicode.

If you can be sure that every non-ASCII character will be escaped (and remember, anything beyond the first 128 characters is non-ASCII), unicode_escape will do the right thing for you. But if there are any literal non-ASCII characters already in your string, things will go wrong.

unicode_escape is fundamentally designed to convert bytes into Unicode text. But in many places -- for example, Python source code -- the source data is already Unicode text.

The only way this can work correctly is if you encode the text into bytes first. UTF-8 is the sensible encoding for all text, so that should work, right?

The following examples are in Python 3, so that the string literals are cleaner, but the same problem exists with slightly different manifestations on both Python 2 and 3.

>>> s = 'naïve \\t test'
>>> print(s.encode('utf-8').decode('unicode_escape'))
naïve   test

Well, that's wrong.

The new recommended way to use codecs that decode text into text is to call codecs.decode directly. Does that help?

>>> import codecs
>>> print(codecs.decode(s, 'unicode_escape'))
naïve   test

Not at all. (Also, the above is a UnicodeError on Python 2.)

The unicode_escape codec, despite its name, turns out to assume that all non-ASCII bytes are in the Latin-1 (ISO-8859-1) encoding. So you would have to do it like this:

>>> print(s.encode('latin-1').decode('unicode_escape'))
naïve    test

But that's terrible. This limits you to the 256 Latin-1 characters, as if Unicode had never been invented at all!

>>> print('Erno \\t Rubik'.encode('latin-1').decode('unicode_escape'))
UnicodeEncodeError: 'latin-1' codec can't encode character '\u0151'
in position 3: ordinal not in range(256)

Adding a regular expression to solve the problem

(Surprisingly, we do not now have two problems.)

What we need to do is only apply the unicode_escape decoder to things that we are certain to be ASCII text. In particular, we can make sure only to apply it to valid Python escape sequences, which are guaranteed to be ASCII text.

The plan is, we'll find escape sequences using a regular expression, and use a function as the argument to re.sub to replace them with their unescaped value.

import re
import codecs

ESCAPE_SEQUENCE_RE = re.compile(r'''
    ( \\U........      # 8-digit hex escapes
    | \\u....          # 4-digit hex escapes
    | \\x..            # 2-digit hex escapes
    | \\[0-7]{1,3}     # Octal escapes
    | \\N\{[^}]+\}     # Unicode characters by name
    | \\[\\'"abfnrtv]  # Single-character escapes
    )''', re.UNICODE | re.VERBOSE)

def decode_escapes(s):
    def decode_match(match):
        return codecs.decode(match.group(0), 'unicode-escape')

    return ESCAPE_SEQUENCE_RE.sub(decode_match, s)

And with that:

>>> print(decode_escapes('Erno \\t Rubik'))
Erno     Rubik

Blurry text after using CSS transform: scale(); in Chrome

 transform-origin: 0% 0;

What does map(&:name) mean in Ruby?

Here :name is the symbol which point to the method name of tag object. When we pass &:name to map, it will treat name as a proc object. For short, tags.map(&:name) acts as:

tags.map do |tag|
  tag.name
end

Importing files from different folder

Note: This answer was intended for a very specific question. For most programmers coming here from a search engine, this is not the answer you are looking for. Typically you would structure your files into packages (see other answers) instead of modifying the search path.

By default, you can't. When importing a file, Python only searches the directory that the entry-point script is running from and sys.path which includes locations such as the package installation directory (it's actually a little more complex than this, but this covers most cases).

However, you can add to the Python path at runtime:

# some_file.py
import sys
# insert at 1, 0 is the script path (or '' in REPL)
sys.path.insert(1, '/path/to/application/app/folder')

import file

Android BroadcastReceiver within Activity

What do I do wrong?

The source code of ToastDisplay is OK (mine is similar and works), but it will only receive something, if it is currently in foreground (you register receiver in onResume). But it can not receive anything if a different activity (in this case SendBroadcast activity) is shown.

Instead you probably want to startActivity ToastDisplay from the first activity?

BroadcastReceiver and Activity make sense in a different use case. In my application I need to receive notifications from a background GPS tracking service and show them in the activity (if the activity is in the foreground).

There is no need to register the receiver in the manifest. It would be even harmful in my use case - my receiver manipulates the UI of the activity and the UI would not be available during onReceive if the activity is not currently shown. Instead I register and unregister the receiver for activity in onResume and onPause as described in BroadcastReceiver documentation:

You can either dynamically register an instance of this class with Context.registerReceiver() or statically publish an implementation through the tag in your AndroidManifest.xml.

TypeError: 'int' object is not callable

I was also facing this issue but in a little different scenario.

Scenario:

param = 1

def param():
    .....
def func():
    if param:
        var = {passing a dict here}
        param(var)

It looks simple and a stupid mistake here, but due to multiple lines of codes in the actual code, it took some time for me to figure out that the variable name I was using was same as my function name because of which I was getting this error.

Changed function name to something else and it worked.

So, basically, according to what I understood, this error means that you are trying to use an integer as a function or in more simple terms, the called function name is also used as an integer somewhere in the code. So, just try to find out all occurrences of the called function name and look if that is being used as an integer somewhere.

I struggled to find this, so, sharing it here so that someone else may save their time, in case if they get into this issue.

Hope this helps!

When to use NSInteger vs. int

On iOS, it currently does not matter if you use int or NSInteger. It will matter more if/when iOS moves to 64-bits.

Simply put, NSIntegers are ints in 32-bit code (and thus 32-bit long) and longs on 64-bit code (longs in 64-bit code are 64-bit wide, but 32-bit in 32-bit code). The most likely reason for using NSInteger instead of long is to not break existing 32-bit code (which uses ints).

CGFloat has the same issue: on 32-bit (at least on OS X), it's float; on 64-bit, it's double.

Update: With the introduction of the iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad Mini with Retina, and iOS 7, you can now build 64-bit code on iOS.

Update 2: Also, using NSIntegers helps with Swift code interoperability.

    TotalY = (SELECT SUM(Y) from DetailTbl where DetailTbl.MasterID = MasterTbl.ID),
    TotalZ = (SELECT SUM(Z) from DetailTbl where DetailTbl.MasterID = MasterTbl.ID)
WHERE
    ....

Specifying and saving a figure with exact size in pixels

This worked for me, based on your code, generating a 93Mb png image with color noise and the desired dimensions:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy

w = 7195
h = 3841

im_np = numpy.random.rand(h, w)

fig = plt.figure(frameon=False)
fig.set_size_inches(w,h)
ax = plt.Axes(fig, [0., 0., 1., 1.])
ax.set_axis_off()
fig.add_axes(ax)
ax.imshow(im_np, aspect='normal')
fig.savefig('figure.png', dpi=1)

How to set the first option on a select box using jQuery?

I had a problem using the defaultSelected property in the answer by @Jens Roland in jQuery v1.9.1. A more generic way (with many dependent selects) would be to put a data-default attribute in your dependent selects and then iterate through them when reseting.

<select id="name0" >
    <option value="">reset</option>
    <option value="1">Text 1</option>
    <option value="2">Text 2</option>
    <option value="3">Text 3</option>
</select>

<select id="name1" class="name" data-default="1">
    <option value="">select all</option>
    <option value="1" selected="true">Text 1</option>
    <option value="2">Text 2</option>
    <option value="3">Text 3</option>
</select>

<select id="name2" class="name" data-default="2">
    <option value="">select all</option>
    <option value="1">Text 1</option>
    <option value="2" selected="true">Text 2</option>
    <option value="3">Text 3</option>
</select>

And the javascript...

$('#name0').change(function(){
    if($('#name0').val() == '') {
        $('select.name').each(function(index){
          $(this).val($(this).data('default'))
        })
    } else {
      $('select.name').val($('#name0').val() );
    }
});

See http://jsfiddle.net/8hvqN/ for a working version of the above.

jQuery remove options from select

find() takes a selector, not a value. This means you need to use it in the same way you would use the regular jQuery function ($('selector')).

Therefore you need to do something like this:

$(this).find('[value="X"]').remove();

See the jQuery find docs.

JNI and Gradle in Android Studio

Android Studio 2.2 came out with the ability to use ndk-build and cMake. Though, we had to wait til 2.2.3 for the Application.mk support. I've tried it, it works...though, my variables aren't showing up in the debugger. I can still query them via command line though.

You need to do something like this:

externalNativeBuild{
   ndkBuild{
        path "Android.mk"
    }
}

defaultConfig {
  externalNativeBuild{
    ndkBuild {
      arguments "NDK_APPLICATION_MK:=Application.mk"
      cFlags "-DTEST_C_FLAG1"  "-DTEST_C_FLAG2"
      cppFlags "-DTEST_CPP_FLAG2"  "-DTEST_CPP_FLAG2"
      abiFilters "armeabi-v7a", "armeabi"
    }
  }
}

See http://tools.android.com/tech-docs/external-c-builds

NB: The extra nesting of externalNativeBuild inside defaultConfig was a breaking change introduced with Android Studio 2.2 Preview 5 (July 8, 2016). See the release notes at the above link.

Android. Fragment getActivity() sometimes returns null

It seems that I found a solution to my problem. Very good explanations are given here and here. Here is my example:

pulic class MyActivity extends FragmentActivity{

private ViewPager pager;
private TitlePageIndicator indicator;
private TabsAdapter adapter;
private Bundle savedInstanceState;

 @Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {

    ....
    this.savedInstanceState = savedInstanceState;
    pager = (ViewPager) findViewById(R.id.pager);;
    indicator = (TitlePageIndicator) findViewById(R.id.indicator);
    adapter = new TabsAdapter(getSupportFragmentManager(), false);

    if (savedInstanceState == null){
        adapter.addFragment(new FirstFragment());
        adapter.addFragment(new SecondFragment());
    }else{
        Integer  count  = savedInstanceState.getInt("tabsCount");
        String[] titles = savedInstanceState.getStringArray("titles");
        for (int i = 0; i < count; i++){
            adapter.addFragment(getFragment(i), titles[i]);
        }
    }

    indicator.notifyDataSetChanged();
    adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();

    // push first task
    FirstTask firstTask = new FirstTask(MyActivity.this);
    // set first fragment as listener
    firstTask.setTaskListener((TaskListener) getFragment(0));
    firstTask.execute();

}

private Fragment getFragment(int position){
     return savedInstanceState == null ? adapter.getItem(position) : getSupportFragmentManager().findFragmentByTag(getFragmentTag(position));
}

private String getFragmentTag(int position) {
    return "android:switcher:" + R.id.pager + ":" + position;
}

 @Override
protected void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState) {
    super.onSaveInstanceState(outState);
    outState.putInt("tabsCount",      adapter.getCount());
    outState.putStringArray("titles", adapter.getTitles().toArray(new String[0]));
}

 indicator.setOnPageChangeListener(new ViewPager.OnPageChangeListener() {
        @Override
        public void onPageSelected(int position) {
            Fragment currentFragment = adapter.getItem(position);
            ((Taskable) currentFragment).executeTask();
        }

        @Override
        public void onPageScrolled(int i, float v, int i1) {}

        @Override
        public void onPageScrollStateChanged(int i) {}
 });

The main idea in this code is that, while running your application normally, you create new fragments and pass them to the adapter. When you are resuming your application fragment manager already has this fragment's instance and you need to get it from fragment manager and pass it to the adapter.

UPDATE

Also, it is a good practice when using fragments to check isAdded before getActivity() is called. This helps avoid a null pointer exception when the fragment is detached from the activity. For example, an activity could contain a fragment that pushes an async task. When the task is finished, the onTaskComplete listener is called.

@Override
public void onTaskComplete(List<Feed> result) {

    progress.setVisibility(View.GONE);
    progress.setIndeterminate(false);
    list.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);

    if (isAdded()) {

        adapter = new FeedAdapter(getActivity(), R.layout.feed_item, result);
        list.setAdapter(adapter);
        adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
    }

}

If we open the fragment, push a task, and then quickly press back to return to a previous activity, when the task is finished, it will try to access the activity in onPostExecute() by calling the getActivity() method. If the activity is already detached and this check is not there:

if (isAdded())

then the application crashes.

In R, dealing with Error: ggplot2 doesn't know how to deal with data of class numeric

The error happens because of you are trying to map a numeric vector to data in geom_errorbar: GVW[1:64,3]. ggplot only works with data.frame.

In general, you shouldn't subset inside ggplot calls. You are doing so because your standard errors are stored in four separate objects. Add them to your original data.frame and you will be able to plot everything in one call.

Here with a dplyr solution to summarise the data and compute the standard error beforehand.

library(dplyr)
d <- GVW %>% group_by(Genotype,variable) %>%
    summarise(mean = mean(value),se = sd(value) / sqrt(n()))

ggplot(d, aes(x = variable, y = mean, fill = Genotype)) +
  geom_bar(position = position_dodge(), stat = "identity",
      colour="black", size=.3) +
  geom_errorbar(aes(ymin = mean - se, ymax = mean + se),
      size=.3, width=.2, position=position_dodge(.9)) +
  xlab("Time") +
  ylab("Weight [g]") +
  scale_fill_hue(name = "Genotype", breaks = c("KO", "WT"),
      labels = c("Knock-out", "Wild type")) +
  ggtitle("Effect of genotype on weight-gain") +
  scale_y_continuous(breaks = 0:20*4) +
  theme_bw()

How to save .xlsx data to file as a blob

The answer above is correct. Please be sure that you have a string data in base64 in the data variable without any prefix or stuff like that just raw data.

Here's what I did on the server side (asp.net mvc core):

string path = Path.Combine(folder, fileName);
Byte[] bytes = System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes(path);
string base64 = Convert.ToBase64String(bytes);

On the client side, I did the following code:

const xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();

xhr.open("GET", url);
xhr.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "text/plain");

xhr.onload = () => {
    var bin = atob(xhr.response);
    var ab = s2ab(bin); // from example above
    var blob = new Blob([ab], { type: 'application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet;' });

    var link = document.createElement('a');
    link.href = window.URL.createObjectURL(blob);
    link.download = 'demo.xlsx';

    document.body.appendChild(link);

    link.click();

    document.body.removeChild(link);
};

xhr.send();

And it works perfectly for me.

How to declare a variable in SQL Server and use it in the same Stored Procedure

What's going wrong with what you have? What error do you get, or what result do or don't you get that doesn't match your expectations?

I can see the following issues with that SP, which may or may not relate to your problem:

  • You have an extraneous ) after @BrandName in your SELECT (at the end)
  • You're not setting @CategoryID or @BrandName to anything anywhere (they're local variables, but you don't assign values to them)

Edit Responding to your comment: The error is telling you that you haven't declared any parameters for the SP (and you haven't), but you called it with parameters. Based on your reply about @CategoryID, I'm guessing you wanted it to be a parameter rather than a local variable. Try this:

CREATE PROCEDURE AddBrand
   @BrandName nvarchar(50),
   @CategoryID int
AS
BEGIN
   DECLARE @BrandID int

   SELECT @BrandID = BrandID FROM tblBrand WHERE BrandName = @BrandName

   INSERT INTO tblBrandinCategory (CategoryID, BrandID) VALUES (@CategoryID, @BrandID)
END

You would then call this like this:

EXEC AddBrand 'Gucci', 23

...assuming the brand name was 'Gucci' and category ID was 23.

Artificially create a connection timeout error

If you are on a unix machine, you can start a port listening using netcat:

nc -l 8099

Then, modify you service to call whatever it usually does to that port e.g. http://localhost:8099/some/sort/of/endpoint

Then, your service will open the connection and write data, but will never get a response, and so will give you a Read Time Out (rather than Connection Refused)

Pass Javascript Variable to PHP POST

You can do this using Ajax. I have a function that I use for something like this:

function ajax(elementID,filename,str,post)
{
    var ajax;
    if (window.XMLHttpRequest)
    {
        ajax=new XMLHttpRequest();//IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari
    }
    else if (ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"))
    {
        ajax=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");//IE6/5
    }
    else if (ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"))
    {
        ajax=new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");//other
    }
    else
    {
        alert("Error: Your browser does not support AJAX.");
        return false;
    }
    ajax.onreadystatechange=function()
    {
        if (ajax.readyState==4&&ajax.status==200)
        {
            document.getElementById(elementID).innerHTML=ajax.responseText;
        }
    }
    if (post==false)
    {
        ajax.open("GET",filename+str,true);
        ajax.send(null);
    }
    else
    {
        ajax.open("POST",filename,true);
        ajax.setRequestHeader("Content-type","application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
        ajax.send(str);
    }
    return ajax;
}

The first parameter is the element you want to change. The second parameter is the name of the filename you're loading into the element you're changing. The third parameter is the GET or POST data you're using, so for example "total=10000&othernumber=999". The last parameter is true if you want use POST or false if you want to GET.

Guid is all 0's (zeros)?

In the spirit of being complete, the answers that instruct you to use Guid.NewGuid() are correct.

In addressing your subsequent edit, you'll need to post the code for your RequestObject class. I'm suspecting that your guid property is not marked as a DataMember, and thus is not being serialized over the wire. Since default(Guid) is the same as new Guid() (i.e. all 0's), this would explain the behavior you're seeing.

Style input type file?

After looking around on Google for a long time, trying out several solutions, both CSS, JavaScript and JQuery, i found that most of them were using an Image as the button. Some of them were hard to use, but i did manage to piece together something that ended out working out for me.

The important parts for me was:

  • The Browse button had to be a Button (not an image).
  • The button had to have a hover effect (to make it look nice).
  • The Width of both the Text and the button had to be easy to adjust.
  • The solution had to work in IE8, FF, Chrome and Safari.

This is the solution i came up with. And hope it can be of use to others as well.

Change the width of .file_input_textbox to change the width of the textbox.

Change the width of both .file_input_div, .file_input_button and .file_input_button_hover to change the width of the button. You might need to tweak a bit on the positions also. I never figured out why...

To test this solution, make a new html file and paste the content into it.

<html>
<head>

<style type="text/css">

.file_input_textbox {height:25px;width:200px;float:left; }
.file_input_div     {position: relative;width:80px;height:26px;overflow: hidden; }
.file_input_button  {width: 80px;position:absolute;top:0px;
                     border:1px solid #F0F0EE;padding:2px 8px 2px 8px; font-weight:bold; height:25px; margin:0px; margin-right:5px; }
.file_input_button_hover{width:80px;position:absolute;top:0px;
                     border:1px solid #0A246A; background-color:#B2BBD0;padding:2px 8px 2px 8px; height:25px; margin:0px; font-weight:bold; margin-right:5px; }
.file_input_hidden  {font-size:45px;position:absolute;right:0px;top:0px;cursor:pointer;
                     opacity:0;filter:alpha(opacity=0);-ms-filter:"alpha(opacity=0)";-khtml-opacity:0;-moz-opacity:0; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
    <input type="text" id="fileName" class="file_input_textbox" readonly="readonly">
 <div class="file_input_div">
  <input id="fileInputButton" type="button" value="Browse" class="file_input_button" />
  <input type="file" class="file_input_hidden"
      onchange="javascript: document.getElementById('fileName').value = this.value"
      onmouseover="document.getElementById('fileInputButton').className='file_input_button_hover';"
      onmouseout="document.getElementById('fileInputButton').className='file_input_button';" />
</div>

How to change Jquery UI Slider handle

The CSS class that can be changed to add a image to the JQuery slider handle is called ".ui-slider-horizontal .ui-slider-handle".

The following code shows a demo:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <link type="text/css" href="http://jqueryui.com/latest/themes/base/ui.all.css" rel="stylesheet" />
  <script type="text/javascript" src="http://jqueryui.com/latest/jquery-1.3.2.js"></script>
  <script type="text/javascript" src="http://jqueryui.com/latest/ui/ui.core.js"></script>
  <script type="text/javascript" src="http://jqueryui.com/latest/ui/ui.slider.js"></script>
  <style type="text/css">
  .ui-slider-horizontal .ui-state-default {background: white url(http://stackoverflow.com/content/img/so/vote-arrow-down.png) no-repeat scroll 50% 50%;}
  </style>
  <script type="text/javascript">
  $(document).ready(function(){
    $("#slider").slider();
  });
  </script>
</head>
<body>
<div id="slider"></div>
</body>
</html>

I think registering a handle option was the old way of doing it and no longer supported in JQuery-ui 1.7.2?

How to copy a map?

You are not copying the map, but the reference to the map. Your delete thus modifies the values in both your original map and the super map. To copy a map, you have to use a for loop like this:

for k,v := range originalMap {
  newMap[k] = v
}

Here's an example from the now-retired SO documentation:

// Create the original map
originalMap := make(map[string]int)
originalMap["one"] = 1
originalMap["two"] = 2

// Create the target map
targetMap := make(map[string]int)

// Copy from the original map to the target map
for key, value := range originalMap {
  targetMap[key] = value
}

How do you validate a URL with a regular expression in Python?

Nowadays, in 90% of case if you working with URL in Python you probably use python-requests. Hence the question here - why not reuse URL validation from requests?

from requests.models import PreparedRequest
import requests.exceptions

def check_url(url):
    prepared_request = PreparedRequest()
    try:
        prepared_request.prepare_url(url, None)
        return prepared_request.url
    except requests.exceptions.MissingSchema, e:
        raise SomeException

Features:

  • Don't reinvent the wheel
  • DRY
  • Work offline
  • Minimal resource

How do you take a git diff file, and apply it to a local branch that is a copy of the same repository?

Copy the diff file to the root of your repository, and then do:

git apply yourcoworkers.diff

More information about the apply command is available on its man page.

By the way: A better way to exchange whole commits by file is the combination of the commands git format-patch on the sender and then git am on the receiver, because it also transfers the authorship info and the commit message.

If the patch application fails and if the commits the diff was generated from are actually in your repo, you can use the -3 option of apply that tries to merge in the changes.

It also works with Unix pipe as follows:

git diff d892531 815a3b5 | git apply

Create zip file and ignore directory structure

You can use -j.

-j
--junk-paths
          Store just the name of a saved file (junk the path), and do not
          store directory names. By default, zip will store the full path
          (relative to the current directory).

Closing Bootstrap modal onclick

If the button tag is inside the div element who contains the modal, you can do something like:

<button class="btn btn-default" data-dismiss="modal" aria-label="Close">Cancel</button>

Why would $_FILES be empty when uploading files to PHP?

Here another cause I found: When using JQuery Mobile and the form attribute data-ajax is set to true, the FILES array will be empty. So set data-ajax to false.

How do I change Bootstrap 3's glyphicons to white?

You can just create your own .white class and add it to the glyphicon element.

.white, .white a {
  color: #fff;
}
<i class="glyphicon glyphicon-home white"></i>

Which "href" value should I use for JavaScript links, "#" or "javascript:void(0)"?

Bootstrap modals from before 4.0 have a basically undocumented behavior that they will load hrefs from a elements using AJAX unless they are exactly #. If you are using Bootstrap 3, javascript:void(0); hrefs will cause javascript errors:

AJAX Error: error GET javascript:void(0);

In these cases you would need to upgrade to bootstrap 4 or change the href.

Set cURL to use local virtual hosts

For setting up virtual hosts on Apache http-servers that are not yet connected via DNS, I like to use:

curl -s --connect-to ::host-name: http://project1.loc/post.json

Where host-name ist the IP address or the DNS name of the machine on which the web-server is running. This also works well for https-Sites.

Where is the Docker daemon log?

In my environment(docker for mac 17.07), there is no log file at ~/Library/Containers/com.docker.docker/Data/com.docker.driver.amd64-linux/log/d??ocker.log

Instead I can find log file as below.

  1. Enter into VM.

    $ screen ~/Library/Containers/com.docker.docker/Data/com.docker.driver.amd64-linux/tty
    or
    $ screen ~/Library/Containers/com.docker.docker/Data/vms/0/tty

  2. Check log file

    / # tail -f /var/log/docker.log

TypeError: method() takes 1 positional argument but 2 were given

Something else to consider when this type of error is encountered:

I was running into this error message and found this post helpful. Turns out in my case I had overridden an __init__() where there was object inheritance.

The inherited example is rather long, so I'll skip to a more simple example that doesn't use inheritance:

class MyBadInitClass:
    def ___init__(self, name):
        self.name = name

    def name_foo(self, arg):
        print(self)
        print(arg)
        print("My name is", self.name)

class MyNewClass:
    def new_foo(self, arg):
        print(self)
        print(arg)

my_new_object = MyNewClass()
my_new_object.new_foo("NewFoo")
my_bad_init_object = MyBadInitClass(name="Test Name")
my_bad_init_object.name_foo("name foo")

Result is:

<__main__.MyNewClass object at 0x033C48D0>
NewFoo
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "C:/Users/Orange/PycharmProjects/Chapter9/bad_init_example.py", line 41, in <module>
    my_bad_init_object = MyBadInitClass(name="Test Name")
TypeError: object() takes no parameters

PyCharm didn't catch this typo. Nor did Notepad++ (other editors/IDE's might).

Granted, this is a "takes no parameters" TypeError, it isn't much different than "got two" when expecting one, in terms of object initialization in Python.

Addressing the topic: An overloading initializer will be used if syntactically correct, but if not it will be ignored and the built-in used instead. The object won't expect/handle this and the error is thrown.

In the case of the sytax error: The fix is simple, just edit the custom init statement:

def __init__(self, name):
    self.name = name

Add column in dataframe from list

IIUC, if you make your (unfortunately named) List into an ndarray, you can simply index into it naturally.

>>> import numpy as np
>>> m = np.arange(16)*10
>>> m[df.A]
array([  0,  40,  50,  60, 150, 150, 140, 130])
>>> df["D"] = m[df.A]
>>> df
    A   B   C    D
0   0 NaN NaN    0
1   4 NaN NaN   40
2   5 NaN NaN   50
3   6 NaN NaN   60
4  15 NaN NaN  150
5  15 NaN NaN  150
6  14 NaN NaN  140
7  13 NaN NaN  130

Here I built a new m, but if you use m = np.asarray(List), the same thing should work: the values in df.A will pick out the appropriate elements of m.

Note that if you're using an old version of numpy, you might have to use m[df.A.values] instead-- in the past, numpy didn't play well with others, and some refactoring in pandas caused some headaches. Things have improved now.

Use multiple custom fonts using @font-face?

You simply add another @font-face rule:

@font-face {
    font-family: CustomFont;
    src: url('CustomFont.ttf');
}

@font-face {
    font-family: CustomFont2;
    src: url('CustomFont2.ttf');
}

If your second font still doesn't work, make sure you're spelling its typeface name and its file name correctly, your browser caches are behaving, your OS isn't messing around with a font of the same name, etc.

Can local storage ever be considered secure?

No.

localStorage is accessible by any webpage, and if you have the key, you can change whatever data you want.

That being said, if you can devise a way to safely encrypt the keys, it doesn't matter how you transfer the data, if you can contain the data within a closure, then the data is (somewhat) safe.

Have nginx access_log and error_log log to STDOUT and STDERR of master process

For a debug purpose:

/usr/sbin/nginx -g "daemon off;error_log /dev/stdout debug;"

For a classic purpose

/usr/sbin/nginx -g "daemon off;error_log /dev/stdout info;"

Require

Under the server bracket on the config file

access_log /dev/stdout;

Math.random() versus Random.nextInt(int)

another important point is that Random.nextInt(n) is repeatable since you can create two Random object with the same seed. This is not possible with Math.random().

Can an interface extend multiple interfaces in Java?

Can an interface extend multiple interfaces in java?

Answer is: Yes.

According to JLS

An interface may be declared to be a direct extension of one or more other interfaces, meaning that it implicitly specifies all the member types, abstract methods, and constants of the interfaces it extends, except for any member types and constants that it may hide.

Phone validation regex

Consider:

^\+?[0-9]{3}-?[0-9]{6,12}$

This only allows + at the beginning; it requires 3 digits, followed by an optional dash, followed by 6-12 more digits.

Note that the original regex allows 'phone numbers' such as 70+12---12+92, which is a bit more liberal than you probably had in mind.

The question was amended to add:

+077-1-23-45-67 and +077-123-45-6-7

You now probably need to be using a regex system that supports alternatives:

^\+?[0-9]{3}-?([0-9]{7}|[0-9]-[0-9]{2}-[0-9]{2}-[0-9]{2}|[0-9]{3}-[0-9]{2}-[0-9]-[0-9])$

The first alternative is seven digits; the second is 1-23-45-67; the third is 123-45-6-7. These all share the optional plus + followed by 3 digits and an optional dash - prefix.

The comment below mentions another pattern:

+077-12-34-567

It is not at all clear what the general pattern should be - maybe one or more digits separated by dashes; digits at front and back?

^\+?[0-9]{3}-?[0-9](-[0-9]+)+$

This will allow the '+077-' prefix, followed by any sequence of digits alternating with dashes, with at least one digit between each dash and no dash at the end.

Adding div element to body or document in JavaScript

Instead of replacing everything with innerHTML try:

document.body.appendChild(myExtraNode);

Reading binary file and looping over each byte

Here's an example of reading Network endian data using Numpy fromfile addressing @Nirmal comments above:

dtheader= np.dtype([('Start Name','b', (4,)),
                ('Message Type', np.int32, (1,)),
                ('Instance', np.int32, (1,)),
                ('NumItems', np.int32, (1,)),
                ('Length', np.int32, (1,)),
                ('ComplexArray', np.int32, (1,))])
dtheader=dtheader.newbyteorder('>')

headerinfo = np.fromfile(iqfile, dtype=dtheader, count=1)

print(raw['Start Name'])

I hope this helps. The problem is that fromfile doesn't recognize and EOF and allow gracefully breaking out of the loop for files of arbitrary size.

Unresolved Import Issues with PyDev and Eclipse

There are two ways of solving this issue:

  • Delete the Python interpreter from "Python interpreters" and add it again.
  • Or just add the folder with the libraries in the interpreter you are using in your project, in my case I was using "bottle" and the folder I added was "c:\Python33\Lib\site-packages\bottle-0.11.6-py3.3.egg"

Now I don't see the error anymore, and the code completion feature works as well with "bottle".

Python 'If not' syntax

Yes, if bar is not None is more explicit, and thus better, assuming it is indeed what you want. That's not always the case, there are subtle differences: if not bar: will execute if bar is any kind of zero or empty container, or False. Many people do use not bar where they really do mean bar is not None.

How to implement history.back() in angular.js

Or you can simply use code :

onClick="javascript:history.go(-1);"

Like:

<a class="back" ng-class="icons">
   <img src="../media/icons/right_circular.png" onClick="javascript:history.go(-1);" />
</a>

Delete certain lines in a txt file via a batch file

Use the following:

type file.txt | findstr /v ERROR | findstr /v REFERENCE

This has the advantage of using standard tools in the Windows OS, rather than having to find and install sed/awk/perl and such.

See the following transcript for it in operation:

C:\>type file.txt
Good Line of data
bad line of C:\Directory\ERROR\myFile.dll
Another good line of data
bad line: REFERENCE
Good line

C:\>type file.txt | findstr /v ERROR | findstr /v REFERENCE
Good Line of data
Another good line of data
Good line

Node.js Port 3000 already in use but it actually isn't?

Maybe you can take this as reference. This single command line can kill the process running on given port.

npx kill-port 3000

To kill multiple ports.

npx kill-port 3000 8080 4200

do <something> N times (declarative syntax)

With lodash:

_.each([1, 2, 3], (item) => {
   doSomeThing(item);
});

//Or:
_.each([1, 2, 3], doSomeThing);

Or if you want to do something N times:

const N = 10;
_.times(N, () => {
   doSomeThing();
});

//Or shorter:
_.times(N, doSomeThing);

Refer to this link for lodash installation

When should I use GC.SuppressFinalize()?

SupressFinalize tells the system that whatever work would have been done in the finalizer has already been done, so the finalizer doesn't need to be called. From the .NET docs:

Objects that implement the IDisposable interface can call this method from the IDisposable.Dispose method to prevent the garbage collector from calling Object.Finalize on an object that does not require it.

In general, most any Dispose() method should be able to call GC.SupressFinalize(), because it should clean up everything that would be cleaned up in the finalizer.

SupressFinalize is just something that provides an optimization that allows the system to not bother queuing the object to the finalizer thread. A properly written Dispose()/finalizer should work properly with or without a call to GC.SupressFinalize().

Why is this error, 'Sequence contains no elements', happening?

If this is the offending line:

db.Responses.Where(y => y.ResponseId.Equals(item.ResponseId)).First();

Then it's because there is no object in Responses for which the ResponseId == item.ResponseId, and you can't get the First() record if there are no matches.

Try this instead:

var response
  = db.Responses.Where(y => y.ResponseId.Equals(item.ResponseId)).FirstOrDefault();

if (response != null)
{
    // take some alternative action
}
else
    temp.Response = response;

The FirstOrDefault() extension returns an objects default value if no match is found. For most objects (other than primitive types), this is null.

Saving timestamp in mysql table using php

Use datetime field type. It comes with many advantages like human readability (nobody reads timestamps) and MySQL functions.

To convert from a unix timestamp, you can use MySQL function FROM_UNIXTIME(1299762201428). To convert back you can use UNIX_TIMESTAMP: SELECT UNIX_TIMESTAMP(t_time) FROM table_name.

Of course, if you don't like MySQL function, you could always use PHP: 'INSERT INTO table_name SET t_time = ' . date('Y-m-d H:i:s', $unix_timestamp).

fatal: Not a valid object name: 'master'

copying Superfly Jon's comment into an answer:

To create a new branch without committing on master, you can use:

git checkout -b <branchname>

git clone: Authentication failed for <URL>

In case someone is facing this issue with Azure DevOps, there the fix is very easy, just adding Git credentials to a repository.

Omitting one Setter/Getter in Lombok

User the below code for omit/excludes from creating setter and getter. value key should use inside @Getter and @Setter.

@Getter(value = AccessLevel.NONE)
@Setter(value = AccessLevel.NONE)
private int mySecret;

Spring boot 2.3 version, this is working well.

Bitwise operation and usage

i didnt see it mentioned, This example will show you the (-) decimal operation for 2 bit values: A-B (only if A contains B)

this operation is needed when we hold an verb in our program that represent bits. sometimes we need to add bits (like above) and sometimes we need to remove bits (if the verb contains then)

111 #decimal 7
-
100 #decimal 4
--------------
011 #decimal 3

with python: 7 & ~4 = 3 (remove from 7 the bits that represent 4)

001 #decimal 1
-
100 #decimal 4
--------------
001 #decimal 1

with python: 1 & ~4 = 1 (remove from 1 the bits that represent 4 - in this case 1 is not 'contains' 4)..

Programmatically open new pages on Tabs

You can, in Firefox it works, add the attribute target="_newtab" to the anchor to force the opening of a new tab.

<a href="some url" target="_newtab">content of the anchor</a>

In javascript you can use

window.open('page.html','_newtab');

Said that, I partially agree with Sam. You shouldn't force user to open new pages or new tab without showing them a hint on what is going to happen before they click on the link.

Let me know if it works on other browser too (I don't have a chance to try it on other browser than Firefox at the moment).

Edit: added reference for ie7 Maybe this link can be useful

How do I create a timer in WPF?

Adding to the above. You use the Dispatch timer if you want the tick events marshalled back to the UI thread. Otherwise I would use System.Timers.Timer.

Google Chrome form autofill and its yellow background

If you want to get rid of it entirely, I've adjusted the code in the previous answers so it works on hover, active and focus too:

input:-webkit-autofill, input:-webkit-autofill:hover, input:-webkit-autofill:active, input:-webkit-autofill:focus {
    -webkit-box-shadow: 0 0 0 1000px white inset;
}

Run all SQL files in a directory

For executing every SQLfile on the same directory use the following command:

ls | awk '{print "@"$0}' > all.sql

This command will create a single SQL file with the names of every SQL file in the directory appended by "@".

After the all.sql is created simply execute all.sql with SQLPlus, this will execute every sql file in the all.sql.

C# List<> Sort by x then y

Do keep in mind that you don't need a stable sort if you compare all members. The 2.0 solution, as requested, can look like this:

 public void SortList() {
     MyList.Sort(delegate(MyClass a, MyClass b)
     {
         int xdiff = a.x.CompareTo(b.x);
         if (xdiff != 0) return xdiff;
         else return a.y.CompareTo(b.y);
     });
 }

Do note that this 2.0 solution is still preferable over the popular 3.5 Linq solution, it performs an in-place sort and does not have the O(n) storage requirement of the Linq approach. Unless you prefer the original List object to be untouched of course.

Duplicate Entire MySQL Database

This won't work for InnoDB. Use this workaround only if you are trying to copy MyISAM databases.

If locking the tables during backup, and, possibly, pausing MySQL during the database import is acceptable, mysqlhotcopy may work faster.

E.g.

Backup:

# mysqlhotcopy -u root -p password db_name /path/to/backup/directory

Restore:

cp /path/to/backup/directory/* /var/lib/mysql/db_name

mysqlhotcopy can also transfer files over SSH (scp), and, possibly, straight into the duplicate database directory.

E.g.

# mysqlhotcopy -u root -p password db_name /var/lib/mysql/duplicate_db_name

Create boolean column in MySQL with false as default value?

Use ENUM in MySQL for true / false it gives and accepts the true / false values without any extra code.

ALTER TABLE `itemcategory` ADD `aaa` ENUM('false', 'true') NOT NULL DEFAULT 'false'

How can I get the current user directory?

$env:USERPROFILE = "C:\\Documents and Settings\\[USER]\\"

What causes: "Notice: Uninitialized string offset" to appear?

Try to test and initialize your arrays before you use them :

if( !isset($catagory[$i]) ) $catagory[$i] = '' ;
if( !isset($task[$i]) ) $task[$i] = '' ;
if( !isset($fullText[$i]) ) $fullText[$i] = '' ;
if( !isset($dueDate[$i]) ) $dueDate[$i] = '' ;
if( !isset($empId[$i]) ) $empId[$i] = '' ;

If $catagory[$i] doesn't exist, you create (Uninitialized) one ... that's all ; => PHP try to read on your table in the address $i, but at this address, there's nothing, this address doesn't exist => PHP return you a notice, and it put nothing to you string. So you code is not very clean, it takes you some resources that down you server's performance (just a very little).

Take care about your MySQL tables default values

if( !isset($dueDate[$i]) ) $dueDate[$i] = '0000-00-00 00:00:00' ;

or

if( !isset($dueDate[$i]) ) $dueDate[$i] = 'NULL' ;

Alternate background colors for list items

You can do it by specifying alternating class names on the rows. I prefer using row0 and row1, which means you can easily add them in, if the list is being built programmatically:

for ($i = 0; $i < 10; ++$i) {
    echo '<tr class="row' . ($i % 2) . '">...</tr>';
}

Another way would be to use javascript. jQuery is being used in this example:

$('table tr:odd').addClass('row1');

Edit: I don't know why I gave examples using table rows... replace tr with li and table with ul and it applies to your example

Difference between private, public, and protected inheritance

1) Public Inheritance:

a. Private members of Base class are not accessible in Derived class.

b. Protected members of Base class remain protected in Derived class.

c. Public members of Base class remain public in Derived class.

So, other classes can use public members of Base class through Derived class object.

2) Protected Inheritance:

a. Private members of Base class are not accessible in Derived class.

b. Protected members of Base class remain protected in Derived class.

c. Public members of Base class too become protected members of Derived class.

So, other classes can't use public members of Base class through Derived class object; but they are available to subclass of Derived.

3) Private Inheritance:

a. Private members of Base class are not accessible in Derived class.

b. Protected & public members of Base class become private members of Derived class.

So, no members of Base class can be accessed by other classes through Derived class object as they are private in Derived class. So, even subclass of Derived class can't access them.

How can I read a text file in Android?

First you store your text file in to raw folder.

private void loadWords() throws IOException {
    Log.d(TAG, "Loading words...");
    final Resources resources = mHelperContext.getResources();
    InputStream inputStream = resources.openRawResource(R.raw.definitions);

Compile Views in ASP.NET MVC

Using Visual Studio's Productivity Power Tools (free) extension helps a bit. Specifically, the Solution Error Visualizer feature. With it, compilation errors marked visually in the solution explorer (in the source file where the error was found). For some reason, however, this feature does not work as with other errors anywhere else in the code.

With MVC views, any compile-time errors will still be underlined in red in their respective .cs files, but signaling these errors is not propagated upwards in the Solution Explorer (in no way, even not in the containing source file).

Thanks for BlueClouds for correcting my previous statement.

I have just reported this as an issue on the extension's github project.

twig: IF with multiple conditions

If I recall correctly Twig doesn't support || and && operators, but requires or and and to be used respectively. I'd also use parentheses to denote the two statements more clearly although this isn't technically a requirement.

{%if ( fields | length > 0 ) or ( trans_fields | length > 0 ) %}

Expressions

Expressions can be used in {% blocks %} and ${ expressions }.

Operator    Description
== Does the left expression equal the right expression?
+ Convert both arguments into a number and add them.
- Convert both arguments into a number and substract them.
* Convert both arguments into a number and multiply them.
/ Convert both arguments into a number and divide them.
% Convert both arguments into a number and calculate the rest of the integer division.
~ Convert both arguments into a string and concatenate them.
or True if the left or the right expression is true.
and True if the left and the right expression is true.
not         Negate the expression.

For more complex operations, it may be best to wrap individual expressions in parentheses to avoid confusion:

{% if (foo and bar) or (fizz and (foo + bar == 3)) %}

How to see the proxy settings on windows?

An update to @rleelr:
It's possible to view proxy settings in Google Chrome:

chrome://net-internals/#http2

Then select

View live HTTP/2 sessions

Then select one of the live sessions (you need to have some tabs open). There you find:

[...]
t=504112 [st= 0] +HTTP2_SESSION  [dt=?]
                  --> host = "play.google.com:443"
                  --> proxy = "PROXY www.xxx.yyy.zzz:8080"
[...]

How to execute Table valued function

You can execute it just as you select a table using SELECT clause. In addition you can provide parameters within parentheses.

Try with below syntax:

SELECT * FROM yourFunctionName(parameter1, parameter2)

Access a JavaScript variable from PHP

JS ist browser-based, PHP is server-based. You have to generate some browser-based request/signal to get the data from the JS into the PHP. Take a look into Ajax.

codeigniter model error: Undefined property

You have to load the db library first. In autoload.php add :

$autoload['libraries'] = array('database');

Also, try renaming User model class for "User_model".

What is the best place for storing uploaded images, SQL database or disk file system?

It depends on your requirements, specially volume, users and frequency of search. But, for small or medium office, the best option is to use an application like Apple Photos or Adobe Lighroom. They are specialized to store, catalog, index, and organize this kind of resource. But, for large organizations, with strong requirements of storage and high number of users, it is recommend instantiate an Content Management plataform with a Digital Asset Management, like Nuxeo or Alfresco; both offers very good resources do manage very large volumes of data with simplified methods to retrive them. And, very important: there is an free (open source) option for both platforms.

Finding the max/min value in an array of primitives using Java

    public int getMin(int[] values){
        int ret = values[0];
        for(int i = 1; i < values.length; i++)
            ret = Math.min(ret,values[i]);
        return ret;
    }

Setting HttpContext.Current.Session in a unit test

We had to mock HttpContext by using a HttpContextManager and calling the factory from within our application as well as the Unit Tests

public class HttpContextManager
{
    private static HttpContextBase m_context;
    public static HttpContextBase Current
    {
        get
        {
            if (m_context != null)
                return m_context;

            if (HttpContext.Current == null)
                throw new InvalidOperationException("HttpContext not available");

            return new HttpContextWrapper(HttpContext.Current);
        }
    }

    public static void SetCurrentContext(HttpContextBase context)
    {
        m_context = context;
    }
}

You would then replace any calls to HttpContext.Current with HttpContextManager.Current and have access to the same methods. Then when you're testing, you can also access the HttpContextManager and mock your expectations

This is an example using Moq:

private HttpContextBase GetMockedHttpContext()
{
    var context = new Mock<HttpContextBase>();
    var request = new Mock<HttpRequestBase>();
    var response = new Mock<HttpResponseBase>();
    var session = new Mock<HttpSessionStateBase>();
    var server = new Mock<HttpServerUtilityBase>();
    var user = new Mock<IPrincipal>();
    var identity = new Mock<IIdentity>();
    var urlHelper = new Mock<UrlHelper>();

    var routes = new RouteCollection();
    MvcApplication.RegisterRoutes(routes);
    var requestContext = new Mock<RequestContext>();
    requestContext.Setup(x => x.HttpContext).Returns(context.Object);
    context.Setup(ctx => ctx.Request).Returns(request.Object);
    context.Setup(ctx => ctx.Response).Returns(response.Object);
    context.Setup(ctx => ctx.Session).Returns(session.Object);
    context.Setup(ctx => ctx.Server).Returns(server.Object);
    context.Setup(ctx => ctx.User).Returns(user.Object);
    user.Setup(ctx => ctx.Identity).Returns(identity.Object);
    identity.Setup(id => id.IsAuthenticated).Returns(true);
    identity.Setup(id => id.Name).Returns("test");
    request.Setup(req => req.Url).Returns(new Uri("http://www.google.com"));
    request.Setup(req => req.RequestContext).Returns(requestContext.Object);
    requestContext.Setup(x => x.RouteData).Returns(new RouteData());
    request.SetupGet(req => req.Headers).Returns(new NameValueCollection());

    return context.Object;
}

and then to use it within your unit tests, I call this within my Test Init method

HttpContextManager.SetCurrentContext(GetMockedHttpContext());

you can then, in the above method add the expected results from Session that you're expecting to be available to your web service.

Formatting "yesterday's" date in python

all answers are correct, but I want to mention that time delta accepts negative arguments.

>>> yesterday = date.today() + timedelta(days=-1)
>>> print(yesterday.strftime('%m%d%y')) #for python2 remove parentheses

PostgreSQL - fetch the row which has the Max value for a column

I think you've got one major problem here: there's no monotonically increasing "counter" to guarantee that a given row has happened later in time than another. Take this example:

timestamp   lives_remaining   user_id   trans_id
10:00       4                 3         5
10:00       5                 3         6
10:00       3                 3         1
10:00       2                 3         2

You cannot determine from this data which is the most recent entry. Is it the second one or the last one? There is no sort or max() function you can apply to any of this data to give you the correct answer.

Increasing the resolution of the timestamp would be a huge help. Since the database engine serializes requests, with sufficient resolution you can guarantee that no two timestamps will be the same.

Alternatively, use a trans_id that won't roll over for a very, very long time. Having a trans_id that rolls over means you can't tell (for the same timestamp) whether trans_id 6 is more recent than trans_id 1 unless you do some complicated math.

Undefined symbols for architecture arm64

This issue occurred for me after installing a pod via Podfile and pod install. After trying a bunch of different fixes I finally just imported the Pod manually (dragging the necessary files into my project) and that solved the problem.

Uploading into folder in FTP?

The folder is part of the URL you set when you create request: "ftp://www.contoso.com/test.htm". If you use "ftp://www.contoso.com/wibble/test.htm" then the file will be uploaded to a folder named wibble.

You may need to first use a request with Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.MakeDirectory to make the wibble folder if it doesn't already exist.

Chrome Fullscreen API

The API only works during user interaction, so it cannot be used maliciously. Try the following code:

addEventListener("click", function() {
    var el = document.documentElement,
      rfs = el.requestFullscreen
        || el.webkitRequestFullScreen
        || el.mozRequestFullScreen
        || el.msRequestFullscreen
    ;

    rfs.call(el);
});

Entity framework code-first null foreign key

You must make your foreign key nullable:

public class User
{
    public int Id { get; set; }
    public int? CountryId { get; set; }
    public virtual Country Country { get; set; }
}

Best practices for API versioning?

We found it practical and useful to put the version in the URL. It makes it easy to tell what you're using at a glance. We do alias /foo to /foo/(latest versions) for ease of use, shorter / cleaner URLs, etc, as the accepted answer suggests.

Keeping backwards compatibility forever is often cost-prohibitive and/or very difficult. We prefer to give advanced notice of deprecation, redirects like suggested here, docs, and other mechanisms.

How to check if two arrays are equal with JavaScript?

If you wish to check arrays of objects for equality and order does NOT matter, i.e.

areEqual([{id: "0"}, {id: "1"}], [{id: "1"}, {id: "0"}]) // true

you'll want to sort the arrays first. lodash has all the tools you'll need, by combining sortBy and isEqual:

// arr1 & arr2: Arrays of objects
// sortProperty: the property of the object with which you want to sort
// Note: ensure every object in both arrays has your chosen sortProperty
// For example, arr1 = [{id: "v-test_id0"}, {id: "v-test_id1"}]
// and          arr2 = [{id: "v-test_id1"}, {id: "v-test_id0"}]
// sortProperty should be 'id'

function areEqual (arr1, arr2, sortProperty) {
  return _.areEqual(_.sortBy(arr1, sortProperty), _.sortBy(arr2, sortProperty))
}

EDIT: Since sortBy returns a new array, there is no need to clone your arrays before sorting. The original arrays will not be mutated.

Note that for lodash's isEqual, order does matter. The above example will return false if sortBy is not applied to each array first.

UTF-8 in Windows 7 CMD

This question has been already answered in Unicode characters in Windows command line - how?

You missed one step -> you need to use Lucida console fonts in addition to executing chcp 65001 from cmd console.
