Programs & Examples On #Typesetting

Typesetting is the process of arranging glyphs (like "characters") in the assembly of "words, paragraphs, pages, and documents" in a beautifully-arranged manner. Often includes substitution of one-to-three "characters" into a single "ligature-glyph", such as a single "character" for "ff".

Get started with Latex on Linux

First you'll need to Install it:

  • If you're using a distro which packages LaTeX (almost all will do) then look for texlive or tetex. TeX Live is the newer of the two, and is replacing tetex on most distributions now.

If you're using Debian or Ubuntu, something like:

<code>apt-get install texlive</code>

..will get it installed.

RedHat or CentOS need:

<code>yum install tetex</code>

Note : This needs root permissions, so either use su to switch user to root, or prefix the commands with sudo, if you aren't already logged in as the root user.

Next you'll need to get a text editor. Any editor will do, so whatever you are comfortable with. You'll find that advanced editors like Emacs (and vim) add a lot of functionality and so will help with ensuring that your syntax is correct before you try and build your document output.

Create a file called test.tex and put some content in it, say the example from the LaTeX primer:

\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article}
\begin{document}

The foundations of the rigorous study of \emph{analysis}
were laid in the nineteenth century, notably by the
mathematicians Cauchy and Weierstrass. Central to the
study of this subject are the formal definitions of
\emph{limits} and \emph{continuity}.

Let $D$ be a subset of $\bf R$ and let
$f \colon D \to \mathbf{R}$ be a real-valued function on
$D$. The function $f$ is said to be \emph{continuous} on
$D$ if, for all $\epsilon > 0$ and for all $x \in D$,
there exists some $\delta > 0$ (which may depend on $x$)
such that if $y \in D$ satisfies
\[ |y - x| < \delta \]
then
\[ |f(y) - f(x)| < \epsilon. \]

One may readily verify that if $f$ and $g$ are continuous
functions on $D$ then the functions $f+g$, $f-g$ and
$f.g$ are continuous. If in addition $g$ is everywhere
non-zero then $f/g$ is continuous.

\end{document}

Once you've got this file you'll need to run latex on it to produce some output (as a .dvi file to start with, which is possible to convert to many other formats):

latex test.tex

This will print a bunch of output, something like this:

=> latex test.tex

This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4)

Output written on test.dvi (1 page, 1508 bytes).
Transcript written on test.log.

..don't worry about most of this output -- the important part is the Output written on test.dvi line, which says that it was successful.

Now you need to view the output file with xdvi:

xdvi test.dvi &

This will pop up a window with the beautifully formatted output in it. Hit `q' to quit this, or you can leave it open and it will automatically update when the test.dvi file is modified (so whenever you run latex to update the output).

To produce a PDF of this you simply run pdflatex instead of latex:

pdflatex test.tex

..and you'll have a test.pdf file created instead of the test.dvi file.

After this is all working fine, I would suggest going to the LaTeX primer page and running through the items on there as you need features for documents you want to write.

Future things to consider include:

  • Use tools such as xfig or dia to create diagrams. These can be easily inserted into your documents in a variety of formats. Note that if you are creating PDFs then you shouldn't use EPS (encapsulated postscript) for images -- use pdf exported from your diagram editor if possible, or you can use the epstopdf package to automatically convert from (e)ps to pdf for figures included with \includegraphics.

  • Start using version control on your documents. This seems excessive at first, but being able to go back and look at earlier versions when you are writing something large can be extremely useful.

  • Use make to run latex for you. When you start on having bibliographies, images and other more complex uses of latex you'll find that you need to run it over multiple files or multiple times (the first time updates the references, and the second puts references into the document, so they can be out-of-date unless you run latex twice...). Abstracting this into a makefile can save a lot of time and effort.

  • Use a better editor. Something like Emacs + AUCTeX is highly competent. This is of course a highly subjective subject, so I'll leave it at that (that and that Emacs is clearly the best option :)

Unable to specify the compiler with CMake

Never try to set the compiler in the CMakeLists.txt file.

See the CMake FAQ about how to use a different compiler:

https://gitlab.kitware.com/cmake/community/wikis/FAQ#how-do-i-use-a-different-compiler

(Note that you are attempting method #3 and the FAQ says "(avoid)"...)

We recommend avoiding the "in the CMakeLists" technique because there are problems with it when a different compiler was used for a first configure, and then the CMakeLists file changes to try setting a different compiler... And because the intent of a CMakeLists file should be to work with multiple compilers, according to the preference of the developer running CMake.

The best method is to set the environment variables CC and CXX before calling CMake for the very first time in a build tree.

After CMake detects what compilers to use, it saves them in the CMakeCache.txt file so that it can still generate proper build systems even if those variables disappear from the environment...

If you ever need to change compilers, you need to start with a fresh build tree.

How do I capitalize first letter of first name and last name in C#?

To get round some of the issues/problems that have ben highlighted I would suggest converting the string to lower case first and then call the ToTitleCase method. You could then use IndexOf(" Mc") or IndexOf(" O\'") to determine special cases that need more specific attention.

inputString = inputString.ToLower();
inputString = CultureInfo.CurrentCulture.TextInfo.ToTitleCase(inputString);
int indexOfMc = inputString.IndexOf(" Mc");
if(indexOfMc  > 0)
{
   inputString.Substring(0, indexOfMc + 3) + inputString[indexOfMc + 3].ToString().ToUpper() + inputString.Substring(indexOfMc + 4);
}

Running AngularJS initialization code when view is loaded

Since AngularJS 1.5 we should use $onInit which is available on any AngularJS component. Taken from the component lifecycle documentation since v1.5 its the preffered way:

$onInit() - Called on each controller after all the controllers on an element have been constructed and had their bindings initialized (and before the pre & post linking functions for the directives on this element). This is a good place to put initialization code for your controller.

var myApp = angular.module('myApp',[]);
myApp.controller('MyCtrl', function ($scope) {

    //default state
    $scope.name = '';

    //all your init controller goodness in here
    this.$onInit = function () {
      $scope.name = 'Superhero';
    }
});

>> Fiddle Demo

An advanced example of using component lifecycle:

The component lifecycle gives us the ability to handle component stuff in a good way. It allows us to create events for e.g. "init", "change" or "destroy" of an component. In that way we are able to manage stuff which is depending on the lifecycle of an component. This little example shows to register & unregister an $rootScope event listener $on. By knowing, that an event $on binded on $rootScope will not be undinded when the controller loses its reference in the view or getting destroyed we need to destroy a $rootScope.$on listener manually. A good place to put that stuff is $onDestroy lifecycle function of an component:

var myApp = angular.module('myApp',[]);

myApp.controller('MyCtrl', function ($scope, $rootScope) {

  var registerScope = null;

  this.$onInit = function () {
    //register rootScope event
    registerScope = $rootScope.$on('someEvent', function(event) {
        console.log("fired");
    });
  }

  this.$onDestroy = function () {
    //unregister rootScope event by calling the return function
    registerScope();
  }
});

Application.WorksheetFunction.Match method

You are getting this error because the value cannot be found in the range. String or integer doesn't matter. Best thing to do in my experience is to do a check first to see if the value exists.

I used CountIf below, but there is lots of different ways to check existence of a value in a range.

Public Sub test()

Dim rng As Range
Dim aNumber As Long

aNumber = 666

Set rng = Sheet5.Range("B16:B615")

    If Application.WorksheetFunction.CountIf(rng, aNumber) > 0 Then

        rowNum = Application.WorksheetFunction.Match(aNumber, rng, 0)

    Else
        MsgBox aNumber & " does not exist in range " & rng.Address
    End If

End Sub

ALTERNATIVE WAY

Public Sub test()
    Dim rng As Range
    Dim aNumber As Variant
    Dim rowNum As Long

    aNumber = "2gg"

    Set rng = Sheet5.Range("B1:B20")

    If Not IsError(Application.Match(aNumber, rng, 0)) Then
        rowNum = Application.Match(aNumber, rng, 0)
        MsgBox rowNum
    Else
        MsgBox "error"
    End If
End Sub

OR

Public Sub test()
    Dim rng As Range
    Dim aNumber As Variant
    Dim rowNum As Variant

    aNumber = "2gg"

    Set rng = Sheet5.Range("B1:B20")

    rowNum = Application.Match(aNumber, rng, 0)

    If Not IsError(rowNum) Then
        MsgBox rowNum
    Else
        MsgBox "error"
    End If
End Sub

Is it safe to store a JWT in localStorage with ReactJS?

It is safe to store your token in localStorage as long as you encrypt it. Below is a compressed code snippet showing one of many ways you can do it.

    import SimpleCrypto from 'simple-crypto-js';

    const saveToken = (token = '') => {
          const encryptInit = new SimpleCrypto('PRIVATE_KEY_STORED_IN_ENV_FILE');
          const encryptedToken = encryptInit.encrypt(token);

          localStorage.setItem('token', encryptedToken);
     }

Then, before using your token decrypt it using PRIVATE_KEY_STORED_IN_ENV_FILE

PostgreSQL create table if not exists

There is no CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS... but you can write a simple procedure for that, something like:

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION execute(TEXT) RETURNS VOID AS $$
BEGIN
  EXECUTE $1;
END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql;

SELECT
  execute($$
      CREATE TABLE sch.foo
      (
        i integer
      )
  $$)
WHERE
  NOT exists
  (
    SELECT *
    FROM information_schema.tables
    WHERE table_name = 'foo'
      AND table_schema = 'sch'
  );

How to force garbage collection in Java?

If you are running out of memory and getting an OutOfMemoryException you can try increasing the amount of heap space available to java by starting you program with java -Xms128m -Xmx512m instead of just java. This will give you an initial heap size of 128Mb and a maximum of 512Mb, which is far more than the standard 32Mb/128Mb.

Biggest advantage to using ASP.Net MVC vs web forms

The problem with MVC is that even for "experts" it eats up a lot of valuable time and requires lot of effort. Businesses are driven by the basic thing "Quick Solution that works" regardless of technology behind it. WebForms is a RAD technology that saves time and money. Anything that requires more time is not acceptable by businesses.

How to find the size of an int[]?

int arr1[] = {8, 15, 3, 7};
int n = sizeof(arr1)/sizeof(arr1[0]);

So basically sizeof(arr1) is giving the size of the object being pointed to, each element maybe occupying multiple bits so dividing by the number of bits per element (sizeof(arr1[0]) gives you the actual number of elements you're looking for, i.e. 4 in my example.

How can one grab a stack trace in C?

For Windows, CaptureStackBackTrace() is also an option, which requires less preparation code on the user's end than StackWalk64() does. (Also, for a similar scenario I had, CaptureStackBackTrace() ended up working better (more reliably) than StackWalk64().)

How to escape a JSON string containing newline characters using JavaScript?

When using any form of Ajax, detailed documentation for the format of responses received from the CGI server seems to be lacking on the Web. Some entries here point out that newlines in returned text or json data must be escaped to prevent infinite loops (hangs) in JSON conversion (possibly created by throwing an uncaught exception), whether done automatically by jQuery or manually using Javascript system or library JSON parsing calls.

In each case where programmers post this problem, inadequate solutions are presented (most often replacing \n by \\n on the sending side) and the matter is dropped. Their inadequacy is revealed when passing string values that accidentally embed control escape sequences, such as Windows pathnames. An example is "C:\Chris\Roberts.php", which contains the control characters ^c and ^r, which can cause JSON conversion of the string {"file":"C:\Chris\Roberts.php"} to loop forever. One way of generating such values is deliberately to attempt to pass PHP warning and error messages from server to client, a reasonable idea.

By definition, Ajax uses HTTP connections behind the scenes. Such connections pass data using GET and POST, both of which require encoding sent data to avoid incorrect syntax, including control characters.

This gives enough of a hint to construct what seems to be a solution (it needs more testing): to use rawurlencode on the PHP (sending) side to encode the data, and unescape on the Javascript (receiving) side to decode the data. In some cases, you will apply these to entire text strings, in other cases you will apply them only to values inside JSON.

If this idea turns out to be correct, simple examples can be constructed to help programmers at all levels solve this problem once and for all.

Divide a number by 3 without using *, /, +, -, % operators

Using counters is a basic solution:

int DivBy3(int num) {
    int result = 0;
    int counter = 0;
    while (1) {
        if (num == counter)       //Modulus 0
            return result;
        counter = abs(~counter);  //++counter

        if (num == counter)       //Modulus 1
            return result;
        counter = abs(~counter);  //++counter

        if (num == counter)       //Modulus 2
            return result;
        counter = abs(~counter);  //++counter

        result = abs(~result);    //++result
    }
}

It is also easy to perform a modulus function, check the comments.

JPA Query.getResultList() - use in a generic way

I had the same problem and a simple solution that I found was:

List<Object[]> results = query.getResultList();
for (Object[] result: results) {
    SomeClass something = (SomeClass)result[1];
    something.doSomething;
}

I know this is defenitly not the most elegant solution nor is it best practice but it works, at least for me.

Running Node.Js on Android

You can use Node.js for Mobile Apps.

It works on Android devices and simulators, with pre-built binaries for armeabi-v7a, x86, arm64-v8a, x86_64. It also works on iOS, though that's outside the scope of this question.

Like JXcore, it is used to host a Node.js engine in the same process as the app, in a dedicated thread. Unlike JXcore, it is basically pure Node.js, built as a library, with a few portability fixes to run on Android. This means that it's much easier to keep the project up to date with mainline Node.js.

Plugins for Cordova and React Native are also available. The plugins provide a communication layer between the JavaScript side of those frameworks and the Node.js side. They also simplify development by taking care of a few things automatically, like packaging modules and cross-compiling native modules at build time.

Full disclosure: I work for the company that develops Node.js for Mobile Apps.

How can I generate a random number in a certain range?

So you would want the following:

int random;
int max;
int min;

...somewhere in your code put the method to get the min and max from the user when they click submit and then use them in the following line of code:

random = Random.nextInt(max-min+1)+min;

This will set random to a random number between the user selected min and max. Then you will do:

TextView.setText(random.toString());

Extracting double-digit months and days from a Python date

Look at the types of those properties:

In [1]: import datetime

In [2]: d = datetime.date.today()

In [3]: type(d.month)
Out[3]: <type 'int'>

In [4]: type(d.day)
Out[4]: <type 'int'>

Both are integers. So there is no automatic way to do what you want. So in the narrow sense, the answer to your question is no.

If you want leading zeroes, you'll have to format them one way or another. For that you have several options:

In [5]: '{:02d}'.format(d.month)
Out[5]: '03'

In [6]: '%02d' % d.month
Out[6]: '03'

In [7]: d.strftime('%m')
Out[7]: '03'

In [8]: f'{d.month:02d}'
Out[8]: '03'

MassAssignmentException in Laravel

Protected $fillable=array('Fields you want to fill using array');

The opposite of fillable is guardable.

JavaScript array to CSV

If your data contains any newlines or commas, you will need to escape those first:

const escape = text =>
    text.replace(/\\/g, "\\\\")
        .replace(/\n/g, "\\n")
        .replace(/,/g, "\\,")

escaped_array = test_array.map(fields => fields.map(escape))

Then simply do:

csv = escaped_array.map(fields => fields.join(","))
                .join("\n")

If you want to make it downloadable in-browser:

dl = "data:text/csv;charset=utf-8," + csv
window.open(encodeURI(dl))

how to git commit a whole folder?

When you “add” something in Git, you add it to the staging area. When you commit, you then commit what’s in the staging area, meaning it’s possible to commit only a sub-set of changed files at any one time.

In your case, you want to add the folder to the staging area, and then just do a normal commit:

$ git add foldername
$ git commit -m 'Helpful commit message'

PostgreSQL database service

The solution was simply to comment the lines "work_mem=256MB" and "maintenance_work_mem=$3GB" in the file postgresql.conf and try to start the postgresql service. (start -> run -> services.msc) and look for the postgresql-[version] service then right click and start.

Call a stored procedure with parameter in c#

The .NET Data Providers consist of a number of classes used to connect to a data source, execute commands, and return recordsets. The Command Object in ADO.NET provides a number of Execute methods that can be used to perform the SQL queries in a variety of fashions.

A stored procedure is a pre-compiled executable object that contains one or more SQL statements. In many cases stored procedures accept input parameters and return multiple values . Parameter values can be supplied if a stored procedure is written to accept them. A sample stored procedure with accepting input parameter is given below :

  CREATE PROCEDURE SPCOUNTRY
  @COUNTRY VARCHAR(20)
  AS
  SELECT PUB_NAME FROM publishers WHERE COUNTRY = @COUNTRY
  GO

The above stored procedure is accepting a country name (@COUNTRY VARCHAR(20)) as parameter and return all the publishers from the input country. Once the CommandType is set to StoredProcedure, you can use the Parameters collection to define parameters.

  command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
  param = new SqlParameter("@COUNTRY", "Germany");
  param.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
  param.DbType = DbType.String;
  command.Parameters.Add(param);

The above code passing country parameter to the stored procedure from C# application.

How do synchronized static methods work in Java and can I use it for loading Hibernate entities?

To address the question more generally...

Keep in mind that using synchronized on methods is really just shorthand (assume class is SomeClass):

synchronized static void foo() {
    ...
}

is the same as

static void foo() {
    synchronized(SomeClass.class) {
        ...
    }
}

and

synchronized void foo() {
    ...
}

is the same as

void foo() {
    synchronized(this) {
        ...
    }
}

You can use any object as the lock. If you want to lock subsets of static methods, you can

class SomeClass {
    private static final Object LOCK_1 = new Object() {};
    private static final Object LOCK_2 = new Object() {};
    static void foo() {
        synchronized(LOCK_1) {...}
    }
    static void fee() {

    }
    static void fie() {
        synchronized(LOCK_2) {...}
    }
    static void fo() {
        synchronized(LOCK_2) {...}
    }
}

(for non-static methods, you would want to make the locks be non-static fields)

Hibernate Criteria Query to get specific columns

You can use JPQL as well as JPA Criteria API for any kind of DTO projection(Mapping only selected columns to a DTO class) . Look at below code snippets showing how to selectively select various columns instead of selecting all columns . These example also show how to select various columns from joining multiple columns . I hope this helps .

JPQL code :

String dtoProjection = "new com.katariasoft.technologies.jpaHibernate.college.data.dto.InstructorDto"
                + "(i.id, i.name, i.fatherName, i.address, id.proofNo, "
                + " v.vehicleNumber, v.vechicleType, s.name, s.fatherName, "
                + " si.name, sv.vehicleNumber , svd.name) ";

        List<InstructorDto> instructors = queryExecutor.fetchListForJpqlQuery(
                "select " + dtoProjection + " from Instructor i " + " join i.idProof id " + " join i.vehicles v "
                        + " join i.students s " + " join s.instructors si " + " join s.vehicles sv "
                        + " join sv.documents svd " + " where i.id > :id and svd.name in (:names) "
                        + " order by i.id , id.proofNo , v.vehicleNumber , si.name , sv.vehicleNumber , svd.name ",
                CollectionUtils.mapOf("id", 2, "names", Arrays.asList("1", "2")), InstructorDto.class);

        if (Objects.nonNull(instructors))
            instructors.forEach(i -> i.setName("Latest Update"));

        DataPrinters.listDataPrinter.accept(instructors);

JPA Criteria API code :

@Test
    public void fetchFullDataWithCriteria() {
        CriteriaBuilder cb = criteriaUtils.criteriaBuilder();
        CriteriaQuery<InstructorDto> cq = cb.createQuery(InstructorDto.class);

        // prepare from expressions
        Root<Instructor> root = cq.from(Instructor.class);
        Join<Instructor, IdProof> insIdProofJoin = root.join(Instructor_.idProof);
        Join<Instructor, Vehicle> insVehicleJoin = root.join(Instructor_.vehicles);
        Join<Instructor, Student> insStudentJoin = root.join(Instructor_.students);
        Join<Student, Instructor> studentInsJoin = insStudentJoin.join(Student_.instructors);
        Join<Student, Vehicle> studentVehicleJoin = insStudentJoin.join(Student_.vehicles);
        Join<Vehicle, Document> vehicleDocumentJoin = studentVehicleJoin.join(Vehicle_.documents);

        // prepare select expressions.
        CompoundSelection<InstructorDto> selection = cb.construct(InstructorDto.class, root.get(Instructor_.id),
                root.get(Instructor_.name), root.get(Instructor_.fatherName), root.get(Instructor_.address),
                insIdProofJoin.get(IdProof_.proofNo), insVehicleJoin.get(Vehicle_.vehicleNumber),
                insVehicleJoin.get(Vehicle_.vechicleType), insStudentJoin.get(Student_.name),
                insStudentJoin.get(Student_.fatherName), studentInsJoin.get(Instructor_.name),
                studentVehicleJoin.get(Vehicle_.vehicleNumber), vehicleDocumentJoin.get(Document_.name));

        // prepare where expressions.
        Predicate instructorIdGreaterThan = cb.greaterThan(root.get(Instructor_.id), 2);
        Predicate documentNameIn = cb.in(vehicleDocumentJoin.get(Document_.name)).value("1").value("2");
        Predicate where = cb.and(instructorIdGreaterThan, documentNameIn);

        // prepare orderBy expressions.
        List<Order> orderBy = Arrays.asList(cb.asc(root.get(Instructor_.id)),
                cb.asc(insIdProofJoin.get(IdProof_.proofNo)), cb.asc(insVehicleJoin.get(Vehicle_.vehicleNumber)),
                cb.asc(studentInsJoin.get(Instructor_.name)), cb.asc(studentVehicleJoin.get(Vehicle_.vehicleNumber)),
                cb.asc(vehicleDocumentJoin.get(Document_.name)));

        // prepare query
        cq.select(selection).where(where).orderBy(orderBy);
        DataPrinters.listDataPrinter.accept(queryExecutor.fetchListForCriteriaQuery(cq));

jQuery fade out then fade in

With async functions and promises, it now can work as simply as this:

async function foobar() {
  await $("#example").fadeOut().promise();
  doSomethingElse();
  await $("#example").fadeIn().promise();

Initializing IEnumerable<string> In C#

You cannot instantiate an interface - you must provide a concrete implementation of IEnumerable.

How do I enable/disable log levels in Android?

The better way is to use SLF4J API + some of its implementation.

For Android applications you can use the following:

  1. Android Logger is the lightweight but easy-to-configure SLF4J implementation (< 50 Kb).
  2. LOGBack is the most powerful and optimized implementation but its size is about 1 Mb.
  3. Any other by your taste: slf4j-android, slf4android.

Difference between array_push() and $array[] =

The difference is in the line below to "because in that way there is no overhead of calling a function."

array_push() will raise a warning if the first argument is not an array. This differs from the $var[] behaviour where a new array is created.

MVC web api: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource

That problem happens when you try to access from a different domain or different port.

If you're using Visual Studio, then go to Tools > NuGet Package Manager > Package Manager Console. There you have to install the NuGet Package Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Cors

Install-Package Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Cors

Then, in PROJECT > App_Start > WebApiConfig, enable CORS

public static class WebApiConfig
{
    public static void Register(HttpConfiguration config)
    {

        //Enable CORS. Note that the domain doesn't have / in the end.
        config.EnableCors(new EnableCorsAttribute("https://tiagoperes.eu",headers:"*",methods:"*"));

        ....

    }
}

Once installed successfully, build the solution and that should suffice

Retrieve last 100 lines logs

len=`cat filename | wc -l`
len=$(( $len + 1 ))
l=$(( $len - 99 ))
sed -n "${l},${len}p" filename

first line takes the length (Total lines) of file then +1 in the total lines after that we have to fatch 100 records so, -99 from total length then just put the variables in the sed command to fetch the last 100 lines from file

I hope this will help you.

PHP array delete by value (not key)

As per your requirement "each value can only be there for once" if you are just interested in keeping unique values in your array, then the array_unique() might be what you are looking for.

Input:

$input = array(4, "4", "3", 4, 3, "3");
$result = array_unique($input);
var_dump($result);

Result:

array(2) {
  [0] => int(4)
  [2] => string(1) "3"
}

How can I get the concatenation of two lists in Python without modifying either one?

you could always create a new list which is a result of adding two lists.

>>> k = [1,2,3] + [4,7,9]
>>> k
[1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9]

Lists are mutable sequences so I guess it makes sense to modify the original lists by extend or append.

How do I convert a String to an InputStream in Java?

You could use a StringReader and convert the reader to an input stream using the solution in this other stackoverflow post.

Difference between readFile() and readFileSync()

fs.readFile takes a call back which calls response.send as you have shown - good. If you simply replace that with fs.readFileSync, you need to be aware it does not take a callback so your callback which calls response.send will never get called and therefore the response will never end and it will timeout.

You need to show your readFileSync code if you're not simply replacing readFile with readFileSync.

Also, just so you're aware, you should never call readFileSync in a node express/webserver since it will tie up the single thread loop while I/O is performed. You want the node loop to process other requests until the I/O completes and your callback handling code can run.

Inner join with 3 tables in mysql

The correct statement should be :

SELECT
  student.firstname,
  student.lastname,
  exam.name,
  exam.date,
  grade.grade
FROM grade
  INNER JOIN student
    ON student.studentId = grade.fk_studentId
  INNER JOIN exam
    ON exam.examId = grade.fk_examId
ORDER BY exam.date

A table is refered to other on the basis of the foreign key relationship defined. You should refer the ids properly if you wish the data to show as queried. So you should refer the id's to the proper foreign keys in the table rather than just on the id which doesn't define a proper relation

Amazon S3 boto - how to create a folder?

With AWS SDK .Net works perfectly, just add "/" at the end of the folder name string:

var folderKey =  folderName + "/"; //end the folder name with "/"
AmazonS3 client = Amazon.AWSClientFactory.CreateAmazonS3Client(AWSAccessKey, AWSSecretKey);
var request = new PutObjectRequest();
request.WithBucketName(AWSBucket);
request.WithKey(folderKey);
request.WithContentBody(string.Empty);
S3Response response = client.PutObject(request);

Then refresh your AWS console, and you will see the folder

How to make a browser display a "save as dialog" so the user can save the content of a string to a file on his system?

In case anyone is still wondering...

I did it like this:

<a href="data:application/xml;charset=utf-8,your code here" download="filename.html">Save</a>

cant remember my source but it uses the following techniques\features:

  1. html5 download attribute
  2. data uri's

Found the reference:

http://paxcel.net/blog/savedownload-file-using-html5-javascript-the-download-attribute-2/

EDIT: As you can gather from the comments this does NOT work in

  1. Internet Explorer (works in Edge v13 though)
  2. iOS Safari
  3. Opera Mini

Getting the document object of an iframe

This is the code I use:

var ifrm = document.getElementById('myFrame');
ifrm = (ifrm.contentWindow) ? ifrm.contentWindow : (ifrm.contentDocument.document) ? ifrm.contentDocument.document : ifrm.contentDocument;
ifrm.document.open();
ifrm.document.write('Hello World!');
ifrm.document.close();

contentWindow vs. contentDocument

  • IE (Win) and Mozilla (1.7) will return the window object inside the iframe with oIFrame.contentWindow.
  • Safari (1.2.4) doesn't understand that property, but does have oIframe.contentDocument, which points to the document object inside the iframe.
  • To make it even more complicated, Opera 7 uses oIframe.contentDocument, but it points to the window object of the iframe. Because Safari has no way to directly access the window object of an iframe element via standard DOM (or does it?), our fully modern-cross-browser-compatible code will only be able to access the document within the iframe.

Logging framework incompatibility

You are mixing the 1.5.6 version of the jcl bridge with the 1.6.0 version of the slf4j-api; this won't work because of a few changes in 1.6.0. Use the same versions for both, i.e. 1.6.1 (the latest). I use the jcl-over-slf4j bridge all the time and it works fine.

Error: expected type-specifier before 'ClassName'

First of all, let's try to make your code a little simpler:

// No need to create a circle unless it is clearly necessary to
// demonstrate the problem

// Your Rect2f defines a default constructor, so let's use it for simplicity.
shared_ptr<Shape> rect(new Rect2f());

Okay, so now we see that the parentheses are clearly balanced. What else could it be? Let's check the following code snippet's error:

int main() {
    delete new T();
}

This may seem like weird usage, and it is, but I really hate memory leaks. However, the output does seem useful:

In function 'int main()':
Line 2: error: expected type-specifier before 'T'

Aha! Now we're just left with the error about the parentheses. I can't find what causes that; however, I think you are forgetting to include the file that defines Rect2f.

    var num = parseFloat(document.getElementById('textbox').value);
    var new_num = num.toFixed(2);
    document.getElementById('textbox').value = new_num;
};

print highest value in dict with key

The clue is to work with the dict's items (i.e. key-value pair tuples). Then by using the second element of the item as the max key (as opposed to the dict key) you can easily extract the highest value and its associated key.

 mydict = {'A':4,'B':10,'C':0,'D':87}
>>> max(mydict.items(), key=lambda k: k[1])
('D', 87)
>>> min(mydict.items(), key=lambda k: k[1])
('C', 0)

How to change the plot line color from blue to black?

The usual way to set the line color in matplotlib is to specify it in the plot command. This can either be done by a string after the data, e.g. "r-" for a red line, or by explicitely stating the color argument.

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

plt.plot([1,2,3], [2,3,1], "r-") # red line
plt.plot([1,2,3], [5,5,3], color="blue") # blue line

plt.show()

See also the plot command's documentation.

In case you already have a line with a certain color, you can change that with the lines2D.set_color() method.

line, = plt.plot([1,2,3], [4,5,3], color="blue")
line.set_color("black")

Setting the color of a line in a pandas plot is also best done at the point of creating the plot:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import pandas as pd

df = pd.DataFrame({ "x" : [1,2,3,5], "y" : [3,5,2,6]})
df.plot("x", "y", color="r") #plot red line

plt.show()

If you want to change this color later on, you can do so by

plt.gca().get_lines()[0].set_color("black")

This will get you the first (possibly the only) line of the current active axes.
In case you have more axes in the plot, you could loop through them

for ax in plt.gcf().axes:
    ax.get_lines()[0].set_color("black")

and if you have more lines you can loop over them as well.

How to get item count from DynamoDB?

With the aws dynamodb cli you can get it via scan as follows:

aws dynamodb scan --table-name <TABLE_NAME> --select "COUNT"

The response will look similar to this:

{
    "Count": 123,
    "ScannedCount": 123,
    "ConsumedCapacity": null
}

notice that this information is in real time in contrast to the describe-table api

SQL Server "AFTER INSERT" trigger doesn't see the just-inserted row

UPDATE: DELETE from a trigger works on both MSSql 7 and MSSql 2008.

I'm no relational guru, nor a SQL standards wonk. However - contrary to the accepted answer - MSSQL deals just fine with both recursive and nested trigger evaluation. I don't know about other RDBMSs.

The relevant options are 'recursive triggers' and 'nested triggers'. Nested triggers are limited to 32 levels, and default to 1. Recursive triggers are off by default, and there's no talk of a limit - but frankly, I've never turned them on, so I don't know what happens with the inevitable stack overflow. I suspect MSSQL would just kill your spid (or there is a recursive limit).

Of course, that just shows that the accepted answer has the wrong reason, not that it's incorrect. However, prior to INSTEAD OF triggers, I recall writing ON INSERT triggers that would merrily UPDATE the just inserted rows. This all worked fine, and as expected.

A quick test of DELETEing the just inserted row also works:

 CREATE TABLE Test ( Id int IDENTITY(1,1), Column1 varchar(10) )
 GO

 CREATE TRIGGER trTest ON Test
 FOR INSERT
 AS
    SET NOCOUNT ON
    DELETE FROM Test WHERE Column1 = 'ABCDEF'
 GO

 INSERT INTO Test (Column1) VALUES ('ABCDEF')
 --SCOPE_IDENTITY() should be the same, but doesn't exist in SQL 7
 PRINT @@IDENTITY --Will print 1. Run it again, and it'll print 2, 3, etc.
 GO

 SELECT * FROM Test --No rows
 GO

You have something else going on here.

ADB not responding. You can wait more,or kill "adb.exe" process manually and click 'Restart'

None of the above helped me completely. Although Oventoaster made me think. I had a couple of adb on my system. Removed them almost all.

I am running android studio on ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.

So I checked manually /home/xxxxx/Android/Sdk/platform-tools/adb

where xxxxx was my linux username

this gave

/home/xxxxx/Android/Sdk/platform-tools/adb: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

https://stackoverflow.com/a/27415749/4453157

solved it for me.

ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis

Firstly, in histories_T, you are referencing table T_customer (should be T_customers) and secondly, you are missing the FOREIGN KEY clause that REFERENCES orders; which is not being created (or dropped) with the code you provided.

There may be additional errors as well, and I admit Oracle has never been very good at describing the cause of errors - "Mutating Tables" is a case in point.

Let me know if there additional problems you are missing.

Select All distinct values in a column using LINQ

Interestingly enough I tried both of these in LinqPad and the variant using group from Dmitry Gribkov by appears to be quicker. (also the final distinct is not required as the result is already distinct.

My (somewhat simple) code was:

public class Pair
{
    public int id {get;set;}
    public string Arb {get;set;}
}

void Main()
{

    var theList = new List<Pair>();
    var randomiser = new Random();
    for (int count = 1; count < 10000; count++)
    {
        theList.Add(new Pair
        {
            id = randomiser.Next(1, 50),
            Arb = "not used"
        });
    }

    var timer = new Stopwatch();
    timer.Start();
    var distinct = theList.GroupBy(c => c.id).Select(p => p.First().id);
    timer.Stop();
    Debug.WriteLine(timer.Elapsed);

    timer.Start();
    var otherDistinct = theList.Select(p => p.id).Distinct();
    timer.Stop();
    Debug.WriteLine(timer.Elapsed);
}

What is __init__.py for?

It facilitates importing other python files. When you placed this file in a directory (say stuff)containing other py files, then you can do something like import stuff.other.

root\
    stuff\
         other.py

    morestuff\
         another.py

Without this __init__.py inside the directory stuff, you couldn't import other.py, because Python doesn't know where the source code for stuff is and unable to recognize it as a package.

Changing capitalization of filenames in Git

Starting Git 2.0.1 (June 25th, 2014), a git mv will just work on a case insensitive OS.

See commit baa37bf by David Turner (dturner-tw).

mv: allow renaming to fix case on case insensitive filesystems

"git mv hello.txt Hello.txt" on a case insensitive filesystem always triggers "destination already exists" error, because these two names refer to the same path from the filesystem's point of view and requires the user to give "--force" when correcting the case of the path recorded in the index and in the next commit.

Detect this case and allow it without requiring "--force".

git mv hello.txt Hello.txt just works (no --force required anymore).

The other alternative is:

git config --global core.ignorecase false

And rename the file directly; git add and commit.

generate random string for div id

I would suggest that you start with some sort of placeholder, you may have this already, but its somewhere to append the div.

<div id="placeholder"></div>

Now, the idea is to dynamically create a new div, with your random id:

var rndId = randomString(8);
var div = document.createElement('div');
div.id = rndId
div.innerHTML = "Whatever you want the content of your div to be";

this can be apended to your placeholder as follows:

document.getElementById('placeholder').appendChild(div);

You can then use that in your jwplayer code:

jwplayer(rndId).setup(...);

Live example: http://jsfiddle.net/pNYZp/

Sidenote: Im pretty sure id's must start with an alpha character (ie, no numbers) - you might want to change your implementation of randomstring to enforce this rule. (ref)

Get Application Name/ Label via ADB Shell or Terminal

adb shell pm list packages will give you a list of all installed package names.

You can then use dumpsys | grep -A18 "Package \[my.package\]" to grab the package information such as version identifiers etc

Laravel Eloquent get results grouped by days

Here is how I do it. A short example, but made my query much more manageable

onKeyPress Vs. onKeyUp and onKeyDown

Just wanted to share a curiosity:

when using the onkeydown event to activate a JS method, the charcode for that event is NOT the same as the one you get with onkeypress!

For instance the numpad keys will return the same charcodes as the number keys above the letter keys when using onkeypress, but NOT when using onkeydown !

Took me quite a few seconds to figure out why my script which checked for certain charcodes failed when using onkeydown!

Demo: https://www.w3schools.com/code/tryit.asp?filename=FMMBXKZLP1MK

and yes. I do know the definition of the methods are different.. but the thing that is very confusing is that in both methods the result of the event is retrieved using event.keyCode.. but they do not return the same value.. not a very declarative implementation.

Convert a Unicode string to a string in Python (containing extra symbols)

If you have a Unicode string, and you want to write this to a file, or other serialised form, you must first encode it into a particular representation that can be stored. There are several common Unicode encodings, such as UTF-16 (uses two bytes for most Unicode characters) or UTF-8 (1-4 bytes / codepoint depending on the character), etc. To convert that string into a particular encoding, you can use:

>>> s= u'£10'
>>> s.encode('utf8')
'\xc2\x9c10'
>>> s.encode('utf16')
'\xff\xfe\x9c\x001\x000\x00'

This raw string of bytes can be written to a file. However, note that when reading it back, you must know what encoding it is in and decode it using that same encoding.

When writing to files, you can get rid of this manual encode/decode process by using the codecs module. So, to open a file that encodes all Unicode strings into UTF-8, use:

import codecs
f = codecs.open('path/to/file.txt','w','utf8')
f.write(my_unicode_string)  # Stored on disk as UTF-8

Do note that anything else that is using these files must understand what encoding the file is in if they want to read them. If you are the only one doing the reading/writing this isn't a problem, otherwise make sure that you write in a form understandable by whatever else uses the files.

In Python 3, this form of file access is the default, and the built-in open function will take an encoding parameter and always translate to/from Unicode strings (the default string object in Python 3) for files opened in text mode.

alert() not working in Chrome

Take a look at this thread: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=4158

The problem is caused by javascript method "window.open(URL, windowName[, windowFeatures])". If the 3rd parameter windowFeatures is specified, then alert box doesn't work in the popup constrained window in Chrome, here is a simplified reduction:

http://go/reductions/4158/test-home-constrained.html

If the 3rd parameter windowFeatures is ignored, then alert box works in the popup in Chrome(the popup is actually opened as a new tab in Chrome), like this:

http://go/reductions/4158/test-home-newtab.html

it doesn't happen in IE7, Firefox3 or Safari3, it's a chrome specific issue.

See also attachments for simplified reductions

Less aggressive compilation with CSS3 calc

A very common usecase of calc is take 100% width and adding some margin around the element.

One can do so with:

@someMarginVariable = 15px;

margin: @someMarginVariable;
width: calc(~"100% - "@someMarginVariable*2);
width: -moz-calc(~"100% - "@someMarginVariable*2);
width: -webkit-calc(~"100% - "@someMarginVariable*2);

PHP function use variable from outside

Alternatively, you can bring variables in from the outside scope by using closures with the use keyword.

$myVar = "foo";
$myFunction = function($arg1, $arg2) use ($myVar)
{
 return $arg1 . $myVar . $arg2;
};

Directly assigning values to C Pointers

First Program with comments

#include <stdio.h>

int main(){
    int *ptr; //Create a pointer that points to random memory address

    *ptr = 20;            //Dereference that pointer,
                          // and assign a value to random memory address.
                          //Depending on external (not inside your program) state
                          // this will either crash or SILENTLY CORRUPT another
                          // data structure in your program.

    printf("%d", *ptr); //Print contents of same random memory address
                          // May or may not crash, depending on who owns this address

    return 0;
}

Second Program with comments

#include <stdio.h>

int main(){
    int *ptr; //Create pointer to random memory address

    int q = 50;            //Create local variable with contents int 50

    ptr = &q; //Update address targeted by above created pointer to point
                           // to local variable your program properly created

    printf("%d", *ptr); //Happily print the contents of said local variable (q)
    return 0;
}

The key is you cannot use a pointer until you know it is assigned to an address that you yourself have managed, either by pointing it at another variable you created or to the result of a malloc call.

Using it before is creating code that depends on uninitialized memory which will at best crash but at worst work sometimes, because the random memory address happens to be inside the memory space your program already owns. God help you if it overwrites a data structure you are using elsewhere in your program.

How can I check if a Perl array contains a particular value?

This blog post discusses the best answers to this question.

As a short summary, if you can install CPAN modules then the most readable solutions are:

any(@ingredients) eq 'flour';

or

@ingredients->contains('flour');

However, a more common idiom is:

any { $_ eq 'flour' } @ingredients

But please don't use the first() function! It doesn't express the intent of your code at all. Don't use the ~~ "Smart match" operator: it is broken. And don't use grep() nor the solution with a hash: they iterate through the whole list.

any() will stop as soon as it finds your value.

How to change font-color for disabled input?

How do I get the SharedPreferences from a PreferenceActivity in Android?

having to pass context around everywhere is really annoying me. the code becomes too verbose and unmanageable. I do this in every project instead...

public class global {
    public static Activity globalContext = null;

and set it in the main activity create

@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
    Thread.setDefaultUncaughtExceptionHandler(new CustomExceptionHandler(
            global.sdcardPath,
            ""));
    super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

    //Start
    //Debug.startMethodTracing("appname.Trace1");

    global.globalContext = this;

also all preference keys should be language independent, I'm shocked nobody has mentioned that.

getText(R.string.yourPrefKeyName).toString()

now call it very simply like this in one line of code

global.globalContext.getSharedPreferences(global.APPNAME_PREF, global.MODE_PRIVATE).getBoolean("isMetric", true);

How do you read a file into a list in Python?

f = open("file.txt")
lines = f.readlines()

Look over here. readlines() returns a list containing one line per element. Note that these lines contain the \n (newline-character) at the end of the line. You can strip off this newline-character by using the strip()-method. I.e. call lines[index].strip() in order to get the string without the newline character.

As joaquin noted, do not forget to f.close() the file.

Converting strint to integers is easy: int("12").

How to draw an overlay on a SurfaceView used by Camera on Android?

SurfaceView probably does not work like a regular View in this regard.

Instead, do the following:

  1. Put your SurfaceView inside of a FrameLayout or RelativeLayout in your layout XML file, since both of those allow stacking of widgets on the Z-axis
  2. Move your drawing logic into a separate custom View class
  3. Add an instance of the custom View class to the layout XML file as a child of the FrameLayout or RelativeLayout, but have it appear after the SurfaceView

This will cause your custom View class to appear to float above the SurfaceView.

See here for a sample project that layers popup panels above a SurfaceView used for video playback.

With that feature on you can use $('img').jqprint(); and jqprint for jquery will only print that image automatically called from your web application.

what is the difference between uint16_t and unsigned short int incase of 64 bit processor?

uint16_t is unsigned 16-bit integer.

unsigned short int is unsigned short integer, but the size is implementation dependent. The standard only says it's at least 16-bit (i.e, minimum value of UINT_MAX is 65535). In practice, it usually is 16-bit, but you can't take that as guaranteed.

Note:

  1. If you want a portable unsigned 16-bit integer, use uint16_t.
  2. inttypes.h and stdint.h are both introduced in C99. If you are using C89, define your own type.
  3. uint16_t may not be provided in certain implementation(See reference below), but unsigned short int is always available.

Reference: C11(ISO/IEC 9899:201x) §7.20 Integer types

For each type described herein that the implementation provides) shall declare that typedef name and define the associated macros. Conversely, for each type described herein that the implementation does not provide, shall not declare that typedef name nor shall it define the associated macros. An implementation shall provide those types described as ‘‘required’’, but need not provide any of the others (described as ‘optional’’).

mailto link multiple body lines

You can use URL encoding to encode the newline as %0A.

While the above appears to work in many cases, user olibre points out that the RFC governing the mailto URI scheme specifies that %0D%0A (carriage return + line feed) should be used instead of %0A (line feed). See also: Newline Representations.

HTML-Tooltip position relative to mouse pointer

For default tooltip behavior simply add the title attribute. This can't contain images though.

<div title="regular tooltip">Hover me</div>

Before you clarified the question I did this up in pure JavaScript, hope you find it useful. The image will pop up and follow the mouse.

jsFiddle

JavaScript

var tooltipSpan = document.getElementById('tooltip-span');

window.onmousemove = function (e) {
    var x = e.clientX,
        y = e.clientY;
    tooltipSpan.style.top = (y + 20) + 'px';
    tooltipSpan.style.left = (x + 20) + 'px';
};

CSS

.tooltip span {
    display:none;
}
.tooltip:hover span {
    display:block;
    position:fixed;
    overflow:hidden;
}

Extending for multiple elements

One solution for multiple elements is to update all tooltip span's and setting them under the cursor on mouse move.

jsFiddle

var tooltips = document.querySelectorAll('.tooltip span');

window.onmousemove = function (e) {
    var x = (e.clientX + 20) + 'px',
        y = (e.clientY + 20) + 'px';
    for (var i = 0; i < tooltips.length; i++) {
        tooltips[i].style.top = y;
        tooltips[i].style.left = x;
    }
};

HTTP Status 500 - Servlet.init() for servlet Dispatcher threw exception

You map your dispatcher on *.do:

<servlet-mapping>
   <servlet-name>Dispatcher</servlet-name>

but your controller is mapped on an url without .do:

How does the getView() method work when creating your own custom adapter?

LayoutInflater is used to generate dynamic views of the XML for the ListView item or in onCreateView of the fragment.

ConvertView is basically used to recycle the views which are not in the view currently. Say you have a scrollable ListView. On scrolling down or up, the convertView gives the view which was scrolled. This reusage saves memory.

The parent parameter of the getView() method gives a reference to the parent layout which has the listView. Say you want to get the Id of any item in the parent XML you can use:

ViewParent nv = parent.getParent();

while (nv != null) {

    if (View.class.isInstance(nv)) {
        final View button = ((View) nv).findViewById(R.id.remove);
        if (button != null) {
            // FOUND IT!
            // do something, then break;
            button.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {

                @Override
                public void onClick(View v) {
                    // TODO Auto-generated method stub
                    Log.d("Remove", "Remove clicked");

                    ((Button) button).setText("Hi");
                }
            });
        }
        break;
    }

 }

How do you do natural logs (e.g. "ln()") with numpy in Python?

You could simple just do the reverse by making the base of log to e.

import math

math.log(e, 10) = 2.302585093
ln(10) = 2.30258093

Position last flex item at the end of container

This flexbox principle also works horizontally

During calculations of flex bases and flexible lengths, auto margins are treated as 0.
Prior to alignment via justify-content and align-self, any positive free space is distributed to auto margins in that dimension.

Setting an automatic left margin for the Last Item will do the work.

.last-item {
  margin-left: auto;
}

Laravel - check if Ajax request

You are using the wrong Request class. If you want to use the Facade like: Request::ajax() you have to import this class:

use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Request;

And not Illumiante\Http\Request

Another solution would be injecting an instance of the real request class:

public function index(Request $request){
    if($request->ajax()){
        return "AJAX";
    }

(Now here you have to import Illuminate\Http\Request)

What does $ mean before a string?

Cool feature. I just want to point out the emphasis on why this is better than string.format if it is not apparent to some people.

I read someone saying order string.format to "{0} {1} {2}" to match the parameters. You are not forced to order "{0} {1} {2}" in string.format, you can also do "{2} {0} {1}". However, if you have a lot of parameters, like 20, you really want to sequence the string to "{0} {1} {2} ... {19}". If it is a shuffled mess, you will have a hard time lining up your parameters.

With $, you can add parameter inline without counting your parameters. This makes the code much easier to read and maintain.

The downside of $ is, you cannot repeat the parameter in the string easily, you have to type it. For example, if you are tired of typing System.Environment.NewLine, you can do string.format("...{0}...{0}...{0}", System.Environment.NewLine), but, in $, you have to repeat it. You cannot do $"{0}" and pass it to string.format because $"{0}" returns "0".

On the side note, I have read a comment in another duplicated tpoic. I couldn't comment, so, here it is. He said that

string msg = n + " sheep, " + m + " chickens";

creates more than one string objects. This is not true actually. If you do this in a single line, it only creates one string and placed in the string cache.

1) string + string + string + string;
2) string.format()
3) stringBuilder.ToString()
4) $""

All of them return a string and only creates one value in the cache.

On the other hand:

string+= string2;
string+= string2;
string+= string2;
string+= string2;

Creates 4 different values in the cache because there are 4 ";".

Thus, it will be easier to write code like the following, but you would create five interpolated string as Carlos Muñoz corrected:

string msg = $"Hello this is {myName}, " +
  $"My phone number {myPhone}, " +
  $"My email {myEmail}, " +
  $"My address {myAddress}, and " +
  $"My preference {myPreference}.";

This creates one single string in the cache while you have very easy to read code. I am not sure about the performance, but, I am sure MS will optimize it if not already doing it.

CREATE TABLE LIKE A1 as A2

For MySQL, you can do it like this:

CREATE TABLE New_Users   SELECT * FROM Old_Users group by ID;

jQuery Array of all selected checkboxes (by class)

var matches = [];
$(".className:checked").each(function() {
    matches.push(this.value);
});

getElementsByClassName not working

There are several issues:

  1. Class names (and IDs) are not allowed to start with a digit.
  2. You have to pass a class to getElementsByClassName().
  3. You have to iterate of the result set.

Example (untested):

<script type="text/javascript">
function hideTd(className){
    var elements = document.getElementsByClassName(className);
    for(var i = 0, length = elements.length; i < length; i++) {
       if( elements[i].textContent == ''){
          elements[i].style.display = 'none';
       }
    }

  }
</script>
</head>
<body onload="hideTd('td');">
<table border="1">
  <tr>
    <td class="td">not empty</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td class="td"></td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td class="td"></td>
  </tr>
</table>
</body>

Note that getElementsByClassName() is not available up to and including IE8.

Update:

Alternatively you can give the table an ID and use:

var elements = document.getElementById('tableID').getElementsByTagName('td');

to get all td elements.

To hide the parent row, use the parentNode property of the element:

elements[i].parentNode.style.display = "none";

What is the difference between cache and persist?

Cache() and persist() both the methods are used to improve performance of spark computation. These methods help to save intermediate results so they can be reused in subsequent stages.

The only difference between cache() and persist() is ,using Cache technique we can save intermediate results in memory only when needed while in Persist() we can save the intermediate results in 5 storage levels(MEMORY_ONLY, MEMORY_AND_DISK, MEMORY_ONLY_SER, MEMORY_AND_DISK_SER, DISK_ONLY).

I tried everything here (and some otherplaces), and what worked for me (after doing all of these, the registry changes are mandatory I think) was to change the setting for Icon Overlays\Status Cache from Default to Shell, and I also checked "Show overlays and context menu only in explorer". Not sure which of those two did it but it works now.

A good Sorted List for Java

You need no sorted list. You need no sorting at all.

I need to add/remove keys from the list when object is added / removed from database.

But not immediately, the removal can wait. Use an ArrayList containing the ID's all alive objects plus at most some bounded percentage of deleted objects. Use a separate HashSet to keep track of deleted objects.

private List<ID> mostlyAliveIds = new ArrayList<>();
private Set<ID> deletedIds = new HashSet<>();

I want to randomly select few dozens of element from the whole list.

ID selectOne(Random random) {
    checkState(deletedIds.size() < mostlyAliveIds.size());
    while (true) {
        int index = random.nextInt(mostlyAliveIds.size());
        ID id = mostlyAliveIds.get(index);
        if (!deletedIds.contains(ID)) return ID;
    }
}

Set<ID> selectSome(Random random, int count) {
    checkArgument(deletedIds.size() <= mostlyAliveIds.size() - count);
    Set<ID> result = new HashSet<>();
    while (result.size() < count) result.add(selectOne(random));
}

For maintaining the data, do something like

void insert(ID id) {
    if (!deletedIds.remove(id)) mostlyAliveIds.add(ID);
}

void delete(ID id) {
    if (!deletedIds.add(id)) {
         throw new ImpossibleException("Deleting a deleted element);
    }
    if (deletedIds.size() > 0.1 * mostlyAliveIds.size()) {
        mostlyAliveIds.removeAll(deletedIds);
        deletedIds.clear();
    }
}

The only tricky part is the insert which has to check if an already deleted ID was resurrected.

The delete ensures that no more than 10% of elements in mostlyAliveIds are deleted IDs. When this happens, they get all removed in one sweep (I didn't check the JDK sources, but I hope, they do it right) and the show goes on.

With no more than 10% of dead IDs, the overhead of selectOne is no more than 10% on the average.

I'm pretty sure that it's faster than any sorting as the amortized complexity is O(n).

Firebug like plugin for Safari browser

Why do you want to use Firebug if Safari already comes with great Developer tools? :)

As Matt said, you can enable them from the preferences menu.

Here you will find an overview, summarized, of the Safari's Web inspector, and how to use it:

Ignore python multiple return value

The best solution probably is to name things instead of returning meaningless tuples (unless there is some logic behind the order of the returned items). You can for example use a dictionary:

def func():
    return {'lat': 1, 'lng': 2}

latitude = func()['lat']

You could even use namedtuple if you want to add extra information about what you are returning (it's not just a dictionary, it's a pair of coordinates):

from collections import namedtuple

Coordinates = namedtuple('Coordinates', ['lat', 'lng'])

def func():
    return Coordinates(lat=1, lng=2)

latitude = func().lat

If the objects within your dictionary/tuple are strongly tied together then it may be a good idea to even define a class for it. That way you'll also be able to define more complex operations. A natural question that follows is: When should I be using classes in Python?

Most recent versions of python (= 3.7) have dataclasses which you can use to define classes with very few lines of code:

from dataclasses import dataclass

@dataclass
class Coordinates:
    lat: float = 0
    lng: float = 0

def func():
    return Coordinates(lat=1, lng=2)

latitude = func().lat

The primary advantage of dataclasses over namedtuple is that its easier to extend, but there are other differences. Note that by default, dataclasses are mutable, but you can use @dataclass(frozen=True) instead of @dataclass to force them being immutable.

Is there an equivalent to background-size: cover and contain for image elements?

Solution #1 - The object-fit property (Lacks IE support)

Just set object-fit: cover; on the img .

_x000D_
_x000D_
body {
  margin: 0;
}
img {
  display: block;
  width: 100vw;
  height: 100vh;
  object-fit: cover; /* or object-fit: contain; */
}
_x000D_
<img src="http://lorempixel.com/1500/1000" />
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

See MDN - regarding object-fit: cover:

The replaced content is sized to maintain its aspect ratio while filling the element’s entire content box. If the object's aspect ratio does not match the aspect ratio of its box, then the object will be clipped to fit.

And for object-fit: contain:

The replaced content is scaled to maintain its aspect ratio while fitting within the element’s content box. The entire object is made to fill the box, while preserving its aspect ratio, so the object will be "letterboxed" if its aspect ratio does not match the aspect ratio of the box.

Also, see this Codepen demo which compares object-fit: cover applied to an image with background-size: cover applied to a background image

Solution #2 - Replace the img with a background image with css

_x000D_
_x000D_
body {
  margin: 0;
}
img {
  position: fixed;
  width: 0;
  height: 0;
  padding: 50vh 50vw;
  background: url(http://lorempixel.com/1500/1000/city/Dummy-Text) no-repeat;
  background-size: cover;
}

String split on new line, tab and some number of spaces

Just use .strip(), it removes all whitespace for you, including tabs and newlines, while splitting. The splitting itself can then be done with data_string.splitlines():

[s.strip() for s in data_string.splitlines()]

Output:

>>> [s.strip() for s in data_string.splitlines()]
['Name: John Smith', 'Home: Anytown USA', 'Phone: 555-555-555', 'Other Home: Somewhere Else', 'Notes: Other data', 'Name: Jane Smith', 'Misc: Data with spaces']

You can even inline the splitting on : as well now:

>>> [s.strip().split(': ') for s in data_string.splitlines()]
[['Name', 'John Smith'], ['Home', 'Anytown USA'], ['Phone', '555-555-555'], ['Other Home', 'Somewhere Else'], ['Notes', 'Other data'], ['Name', 'Jane Smith'], ['Misc', 'Data with spaces']]

Mismatch Detected for 'RuntimeLibrary'

I downloaded and extracted Crypto++ in C:\cryptopp. I used Visual Studio Express 2012 to build all the projects inside (as instructed in readme), and everything was built successfully. Then I made a test project in some other folder and added cryptolib as a dependency.

The conversion was probably not successful. The only thing that was successful was the running of VCUpgrade. The actual conversion itself failed but you don't know until you experience the errors you are seeing. For some of the details, see Visual Studio on the Crypto++ wiki.

Any ideas how to fix this?

To resolve your issues, you should download vs2010.zip if you want static C/C++ runtime linking (/MT or /MTd), or vs2010-dynamic.zip if you want dynamic C/C++ runtime linking (/MT or /MTd). Both fix the latent, silent failures produced by VCUpgrade.

vs2010.zip, vs2010-dynamic.zip and vs2005-dynamic.zip are built from the latest GitHub sources. As of this writing (JUN 1 2016), that's effectively pre-Crypto++ 5.6.4. If you are using the ZIP files with a down level Crypto++, like 5.6.2 or 5.6.3, then you will run into minor problems.

There are two minor problems I am aware. First is a rename of bench.cpp to bench1.cpp. Its error is either:

  • C1083: Cannot open source file: 'bench1.cpp': No such file or directory
  • LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "void __cdecl OutputResultOperations(char const *,char const *,bool,unsigned long,double)" (?OutputResultOperations@@YAXPBD0_NKN@Z)

The fix is to either (1) open cryptest.vcxproj in notepad, find bench1.cpp, and then rename it to bench.cpp. Or (2) rename bench.cpp to bench1.cpp on the filesystem. Please don't delete this file.

The second problem is a little trickier because its a moving target. Down level releases, like 5.6.2 or 5.6.3, are missing the latest classes available in GitHub. The missing class files include HKDF (5.6.3), RDRAND (5.6.3), RDSEED (5.6.3), ChaCha (5.6.4), BLAKE2 (5.6.4), Poly1305 (5.6.4), etc.

The fix is to remove the missing source files from the Visual Studio project files since they don't exist for the down level releases.

Another option is to add the missing class files from the latest sources, but there could be complications. For example, many of the sources subtly depend upon the latest config.h, cpu.h and cpu.cpp. The "subtlety" is you won't realize you are getting an under-performing class.

An example of under-performing class is BLAKE2. config.h adds compile time ARM-32 and ARM-64 detection. cpu.h and cpu.cpp adds runtime ARM instruction detection, which depends upon compile time detection. If you add BLAKE2 without the other files, then none of the detection occurs and you get a straight C/C++ implementation. You probably won't realize you are missing the NEON opportunity, which runs around 9 to 12 cycles-per-byte versus 40 cycles-per-byte or so for vanilla C/C++.

C# DataRow Empty-check

I created an extension method (gosh I wish Java had these) called IsEmpty as follows:

public static bool IsEmpty(this DataRow row)
{
    return row == null || row.ItemArray.All(i => i is DBNull);
}

The other answers here are correct. I just felt mine lent brevity in its succinct use of Linq to Objects. BTW, this is really useful in conjunction with Excel parsing since users may tack on a row down the page (thousands of lines) with no regard to how that affects parsing the data.

In the same class, I put any other helpers I found useful, like parsers so that if the field contains text that you know should be a number, you can parse it fluently. Minor pro tip for anyone new to the idea. (Anyone at SO, really? Nah!)

With that in mind, here is an enhanced version:

public static bool IsEmpty(this DataRow row)
{
    return row == null || row.ItemArray.All(i => i.IsNullEquivalent());
}

public static bool IsNullEquivalent(this object value)
{
    return value == null
           || value is DBNull
           || string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(value.ToString());
}

Now you have another useful helper, IsNullEquivalent which can be used in this context and any other, too. You could extend this to include things like "n/a" or "TBD" if you know that your data has placeholders like that.

How can I clear the content of a file?

Try using something like

File.Create

Creates or overwrites a file in the specified path.

What evaluates to True/False in R?

If you think about it, comparing numbers to logical statements doesn't make much sense. However, since 0 is often associated with "Off" or "False" and 1 with "On" or "True", R has decided to allow 1 == TRUE and 0 == FALSE to both be true. Any other numeric-to-boolean comparison should yield false, unless it's something like 3 - 2 == TRUE.

How to write a CSS hack for IE 11?

So I found my own solution to this problem in the end.

After searching through Microsoft documentation I managed to find a new IE11 only style msTextCombineHorizontal

In my test, I check for IE10 styles and if they are a positive match, then I check for the IE11 only style. If I find it, then it's IE11+, if I don't, then it's IE10.

Code Example: Detect IE10 and IE11 by CSS Capability Testing (JSFiddle)

I will update the code example with more styles when I discover them.

NOTE: This will almost certainly identify IE12 and IE13 as "IE11", as those styles will probably carry forward. I will add further tests as new versions roll out, and hopefully be able to rely again on Modernizr.

I'm using this test for fallback behavior. The fallback behavior is just less glamorous styling, it doesn't have reduced functionality.

How do I prevent site scraping?

Late answer - and also this answer probably isn't the one you want to hear...

Myself already wrote many (many tens) of different specialized data-mining scrapers. (just because I like the "open data" philosophy).

Here are already many advices in other answers - now i will play the devil's advocate role and will extend and/or correct their effectiveness.

First:

  • if someone really wants your data
  • you can't effectively (technically) hide your data
  • if the data should be publicly accessible to your "regular users"

Trying to use some technical barriers aren't worth the troubles, caused:

  • to your regular users by worsening their user-experience
  • to regular and welcomed bots (search engines)
  • etc...

Plain HMTL - the easiest way is parse the plain HTML pages, with well defined structure and css classes. E.g. it is enough to inspect element with Firebug, and use the right Xpaths, and/or CSS path in my scraper.

You could generate the HTML structure dynamically and also, you can generate dynamically the CSS class-names (and the CSS itself too) (e.g. by using some random class names) - but

  • you want to present the informations to your regular users in consistent way
  • e.g. again - it is enough to analyze the page structure once more to setup the scraper.
  • and it can be done automatically by analyzing some "already known content"
    • once someone already knows (by earlier scrape), e.g.:
    • what contains the informations about "phil collins"
    • enough display the "phil collins" page and (automatically) analyze how the page is structured "today" :)

You can't change the structure for every response, because your regular users will hate you. Also, this will cause more troubles for you (maintenance) not for the scraper. The XPath or CSS path is determinable by the scraping script automatically from the known content.

Ajax - little bit harder in the start, but many times speeds up the scraping process :) - why?

When analyzing the requests and responses, i just setup my own proxy server (written in perl) and my firefox is using it. Of course, because it is my own proxy - it is completely hidden - the target server see it as regular browser. (So, no X-Forwarded-for and such headers). Based on the proxy logs, mostly is possible to determine the "logic" of the ajax requests, e.g. i could skip most of the html scraping, and just use the well-structured ajax responses (mostly in JSON format).

So, the ajax doesn't helps much...

Some more complicated are pages which uses much packed javascript functions.

Here is possible to use two basic methods:

  • unpack and understand the JS and create a scraper which follows the Javascript logic (the hard way)
  • or (preferably using by myself) - just using Mozilla with Mozrepl for scrape. E.g. the real scraping is done in full featured javascript enabled browser, which is programmed to clicking to the right elements and just grabbing the "decoded" responses directly from the browser window.

Such scraping is slow (the scraping is done as in regular browser), but it is

  • very easy to setup and use
  • and it is nearly impossible to counter it :)
  • and the "slowness" is needed anyway to counter the "blocking the rapid same IP based requests"

The User-Agent based filtering doesn't helps at all. Any serious data-miner will set it to some correct one in his scraper.

Require Login - doesn't helps. The simplest way beat it (without any analyze and/or scripting the login-protocol) is just logging into the site as regular user, using Mozilla and after just run the Mozrepl based scraper...

Remember, the require login helps for anonymous bots, but doesn't helps against someone who want scrape your data. He just register himself to your site as regular user.

Using frames isn't very effective also. This is used by many live movie services and it not very hard to beat. The frames are simply another one HTML/Javascript pages what are needed to analyze... If the data worth the troubles - the data-miner will do the required analyze.

IP-based limiting isn't effective at all - here are too many public proxy servers and also here is the TOR... :) It doesn't slows down the scraping (for someone who really wants your data).

Very hard is scrape data hidden in images. (e.g. simply converting the data into images server-side). Employing "tesseract" (OCR) helps many times - but honestly - the data must worth the troubles for the scraper. (which many times doesn't worth).

On the other side, your users will hate you for this. Myself, (even when not scraping) hate websites which doesn't allows copy the page content into the clipboard (because the information are in the images, or (the silly ones) trying to bond to the right click some custom Javascript event. :)

The hardest are the sites which using java applets or flash, and the applet uses secure https requests itself internally. But think twice - how happy will be your iPhone users... ;). Therefore, currently very few sites using them. Myself, blocking all flash content in my browser (in regular browsing sessions) - and never using sites which depends on Flash.

Your milestones could be..., so you can try this method - just remember - you will probably loose some of your users. Also remember, some SWF files are decompilable. ;)

Captcha (the good ones - like reCaptcha) helps a lot - but your users will hate you... - just imagine, how your users will love you when they need solve some captchas in all pages showing informations about the music artists.

Probably don't need to continue - you already got into the picture.

Now what you should do:

Remember: It is nearly impossible to hide your data, if you on the other side want publish them (in friendly way) to your regular users.

So,

  • make your data easily accessible - by some API
    • this allows the easy data access
    • e.g. offload your server from scraping - good for you
  • setup the right usage rights (e.g. for example must cite the source)
  • remember, many data isn't copyright-able - and hard to protect them
  • add some fake data (as you already done) and use legal tools
    • as others already said, send an "cease and desist letter"
    • other legal actions (sue and like) probably is too costly and hard to win (especially against non US sites)

Think twice before you will try to use some technical barriers.

Rather as trying block the data-miners, just add more efforts to your website usability. Your user will love you. The time (&energy) invested into technical barriers usually aren't worth - better to spend the time to make even better website...

Also, data-thieves aren't like normal thieves.

If you buy an inexpensive home alarm and add an warning "this house is connected to the police" - many thieves will not even try to break into. Because one wrong move by him - and he going to jail...

So, you investing only few bucks, but the thief investing and risk much.

But the data-thief hasn't such risks. just the opposite - ff you make one wrong move (e.g. if you introduce some BUG as a result of technical barriers), you will loose your users. If the the scraping bot will not work for the first time, nothing happens - the data-miner just will try another approach and/or will debug the script.

In this case, you need invest much more - and the scraper investing much less.

Just think where you want invest your time & energy...

Ps: english isn't my native - so forgive my broken english...

Combining two expressions (Expression<Func<T, bool>>)

I think this works fine, isn't it ?

Func<T, bool> expr1 = (x => x.Att1 == "a");
Func<T, bool> expr2 = (x => x.Att2 == "b");
Func<T, bool> expr1ANDexpr2 = (x => expr1(x) && expr2(x));
Func<T, bool> expr1ORexpr2 = (x => expr1(x) || expr2(x));
Func<T, bool> NOTexpr1 = (x => !expr1(x));

How do you loop through each line in a text file using a windows batch file?

The accepted answer is good, but has two limitations.
It drops empty lines and lines beginning with ;

To read lines of any content, you need the delayed expansion toggling technic.

@echo off
SETLOCAL DisableDelayedExpansion
FOR /F "usebackq delims=" %%a in (`"findstr /n ^^ text.txt"`) do (
    set "var=%%a"
    SETLOCAL EnableDelayedExpansion
    set "var=!var:*:=!"
    echo(!var!
    ENDLOCAL
)

Findstr is used to prefix each line with the line number and a colon, so empty lines aren't empty anymore.

DelayedExpansion needs to be disabled, when accessing the %%a parameter, else exclamation marks ! and carets ^ will be lost, as they have special meanings in that mode.

But to remove the line number from the line, the delayed expansion needs to be enabled.
set "var=!var:*:=!" removes all up to the first colon (using delims=: would remove also all colons at the beginning of a line, not only the one from findstr).
The endlocal disables the delayed expansion again for the next line.

The only limitation is now the line length limit of ~8191, but there seems no way to overcome this.

Space between two divs

If you don't require support for IE6:

h1 {margin-bottom:20px;}
div + div {margin-top:10px;}

The second line adds spacing between divs, but will not add any before the first div or after the last one.

History or log of commands executed in Git

If you are using CentOS or another Linux flavour then just do Ctrl+R at the prompt and type git.

If you keep hitting Ctrl+R this will do a reverse search through your history for commands that start with git

How can I delete a newline if it is the last character in a file?

head -n -1 abc > newfile
tail -n 1 abc | tr -d '\n' >> newfile

Edit 2:

Here is an awk version (corrected) that doesn't accumulate a potentially huge array:

awk '{if (line) print line; line=$0} END {printf $0}' abc

Is it possible to select the last n items with nth-child?

If you are using jQuery in your project, or are willing to include it you can call nth-last-child through its selector API (this is this simulated it will cross browser). Here is a link to an nth-last-child plugin. If you took this method of targeting the elements you were interested in:

$('ul li:nth-last-child(1)').addClass('last');

And then style again the last class instead of the nth-child or nth-last-child pseudo selectors, you will have a much more consistent cross browser experience.

How do I SET the GOPATH environment variable on Ubuntu? What file must I edit?

If you've setup anything that needs modification of environment variables e.g. Java, Go etc this will be very familiar.

I will assume that you have the following directory structure somewhere as your Go path:

\---[folder name]
    +---bin
    +---pkg
    \---src
  • open a new terminal
  • type sudo nano /etc/environment
  • find PATH=... and go the end of it and add a colon : after the last path then paste in your full go path e.g. /home/user/gocode

and you're done, This should make it persistent through the system.

Ansible date variable

I tried the lookup('pipe,'date') method and got trouble when I push the playbook to the tower. The tower is somehow using UTC timezone. All play executed as early as the + hours of my TZ will give me one day later of the actual date.

For example: if my TZ is Asia/Manila I supposed to have UTC+8. If I execute the playbook earlier than 8:00am in Ansible Tower, the date will follow to what was in UTC+0. It took me a while until I found this case. It let me use the date option '-d \"+8 hours\" +%F'. Now it gives me the exact date that I wanted.

Below is the variable I set in my playbook:

  vars:
    cur_target_wd: "{{ lookup('pipe','date -d \"+8 hours\" +%Y/%m-%b/%d-%a') }}"

That will give me the value of "cur_target_wd = 2020/05-May/28-Thu" even I run it earlier than 8:00am now.

What is the difference between functional and non-functional requirements?

Functional requirements are those which are related to the technical functionality of the system.

non-functional requirement is a requirement that specifies criteria that can be used to judge the operation of a system in particular conditions, rather than specific behaviors.

For example if you consider a shopping site, adding items to cart, browsing different items, applying offers and deals and successfully placing orders comes under functional requirements.

Where as performance of the system in peak hours, time taken for the system to retrieve data from DB, security of the user data, ability of the system to handle if large number of users login comes under non functional requirements.

System.MissingMethodException: Method not found?

Just in case it helps anyone, although it's an old issue, my problem was a bit odd.

I had this error while using Jenkins.

Eventually found out that the system date was manually set to a future date, which caused dll to be compiled with that future date. When the date was set back to normal, MSBuild interpreted that the file was newer and didn't require recompile of the project.

create multiple tag docker image

How not to do it:

When building an image, you could also tag it this way.

docker build -t ubuntu:14.04 .

Then you build it again with another tag:

docker build -t ubuntu:latest .

If your Dockerfile makes good use of the cache, the same image should come out, and it effectively does the same as retagging the same image. If you do docker images then you will see that they have the same ID.

There's probably a case where this goes wrong though... But like @david-braun said, you can't create tags with Dockerfiles themselves, just with the docker command.

How can I compare two strings in java and define which of them is smaller than the other alphabetically?

You can use

str1.compareTo(str2);

If str1 is lexicographically less than str2, a negative number will be returned, 0 if equal or a positive number if str1 is greater.

E.g.,

"a".compareTo("b"); // returns a negative number, here -1
"a".compareTo("a"); // returns  0
"b".compareTo("a"); // returns a positive number, here 1
"b".compareTo(null); // throws java.lang.NullPointerException

How to format a UTC date as a `YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss` string using NodeJS?

If you're using Node.js, you're sure to have EcmaScript 5, and so Date has a toISOString method. You're asking for a slight modification of ISO8601:

new Date().toISOString()
> '2012-11-04T14:51:06.157Z'

So just cut a few things out, and you're set:

new Date().toISOString().
  replace(/T/, ' ').      // replace T with a space
  replace(/\..+/, '') // delete the dot and everything after
> '2012-11-04 14:55:45'

Or, in one line: new Date().toISOString().replace(/T/, ' ').replace(/\..+/, '')

ISO8601 is necessarily UTC (also indicated by the trailing Z on the first result), so you get UTC by default (always a good thing).

Add column with number of days between dates in DataFrame pandas

Assuming these were datetime columns (if they're not apply to_datetime) you can just subtract them:

df['A'] = pd.to_datetime(df['A'])
df['B'] = pd.to_datetime(df['B'])

In [11]: df.dtypes  # if already datetime64 you don't need to use to_datetime
Out[11]:
A    datetime64[ns]
B    datetime64[ns]
dtype: object

In [12]: df['A'] - df['B']
Out[12]:
one   -58 days
two   -26 days
dtype: timedelta64[ns]

In [13]: df['C'] = df['A'] - df['B']

In [14]: df
Out[14]:
             A          B        C
one 2014-01-01 2014-02-28 -58 days
two 2014-02-03 2014-03-01 -26 days

Note: ensure you're using a new of pandas (e.g. 0.13.1), this may not work in older versions.

C# switch on type

I have used this form of switch-case on rare occasion. Even then I have found another way to do what I wanted. If you find that this is the only way to accomplish what you need, I would recommend @Mark H's solution.

If this is intended to be a sort of factory creation decision process, there are better ways to do it. Otherwise, I really can't see why you want to use the switch on a type.

Here is a little example expanding on Mark's solution. I think it is a great way to work with types:

Dictionary<Type, Action> typeTests;

public ClassCtor()
{
    typeTests = new Dictionary<Type, Action> ();

    typeTests[typeof(int)] = () => DoIntegerStuff();
    typeTests[typeof(string)] = () => DoStringStuff();
    typeTests[typeof(bool)] = () => DoBooleanStuff();
}

private void DoBooleanStuff()
{
   //do stuff
}

private void DoStringStuff()
{
    //do stuff
}

private void DoIntegerStuff()
{
    //do stuff
}

public Action CheckTypeAction(Type TypeToTest)
{
    if (typeTests.Keys.Contains(TypeToTest))
        return typeTests[TypeToTest];

    return null; // or some other Action delegate
}

How can I concatenate a string and a number in Python?

If it worked the way you expected it to (resulting in "abc9"), what would "9" + 9 deliver? 18 or "99"?

To remove this ambiguity, you are required to make explicit what you want to convert in this case:

"abc" + str(9)

Is it possible to change the radio button icon in an android radio button group

You can put custom image in radiobutton like normal button. for that create one XML file in drawable folder e.g

<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<item android:drawable="@drawable/sub_screens_aus_hl"
    android:state_pressed="true"/>
<item android:drawable="@drawable/sub_screens_aus"
    android:state_checked="true"/>
<item android:drawable="@drawable/sub_screens_aus"
    android:state_focused="true" />
<item android:drawable="@drawable/sub_screens_aus_dis" />
</selector>

Here you can use 3 different images for radiobutton

and use this file to RadioButton like:

android:button="@drawable/aus"
android:layout_height="120dp"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"

I second the google doc, or you could use an online collaborative board that multiple people can edit.

Or you can host a more robust excel doc in skydrive from MS. I haven't tried that yet.

Mura.ly is another one that I am playing with currently. It has unlimited collaborators, though I think you would probably have to invite them everytime?? with a free account.

Hope that helps!

What is the official name for a credit card's 3 digit code?

From Wikipedia,

The Card Security Code is located on the back of MasterCard, Visa and Discover credit or debit cards and is typically a separate group of 3 digits to the right of the signature strip. On American Express cards, the Card Security Code is a printed (NOT embossed) group of four digits on the front towards the right.

The Card Security Code (CSC), sometimes called Card Verification Value (CVV or CV2), Card Verification Value Code (CVVC), Card Verification Code (CVC), Verification Code (V-Code or V Code), or Card Code Verification (CCV)[1] is a security feature for credit or debit card transactions, giving increased protection against credit card fraud.

There are actually several types of security codes:

* The first code, called CVC1 or CVV1, is encoded on the magnetic stripe of the card and used for transactions in person.
* The second code, and the most cited, is CVV2 or CVC2. This CSC (also known as a CCID or Credit Card ID) is often asked for by merchants for them to secure "card not present" transactions occurring over the Internet, by mail, fax or over the phone. In many countries in Western Europe, due to increased attempts at card fraud, it is now mandatory to provide this code when the cardholder is not present in person.
* Contactless Card and Chip cards may supply their own codes generated electronically, such as iCVV or Dynamic CVV.

The CVC should not be confused with the standard card account number appearing in embossed or printed digits. (The standard card number undergoes a separate validation algorithm called the Luhn algorithm which serves to determine whether a given card's number is appropriate.)

The CVC should not be confused with PIN codes such as MasterCard SecureCode or Visa Verified by Visa. These codes are not printed or embedded in the card but are entered at the time of transaction using a keypad.

Detecting an undefined object property

I'm not sure where the origin of using === with typeof came from, and as a convention I see it used in many libraries, but the typeof operator returns a string literal, and we know that up front, so why would you also want to type check it too?

typeof x; // some string literal "string", "object", "undefined"
if (typeof x === "string") { // === is redundant because we already know typeof returns a string literal
if (typeof x == "string") {    // sufficient

Batch program to to check if process exists

TASKLIST does not set errorlevel.

echo off
tasklist /fi "imagename eq notepad.exe" |find ":" > nul
if errorlevel 1 taskkill /f /im "notepad.exe"
exit

should do the job, since ":" should appear in TASKLIST output only if the task is NOT found, hence FIND will set the errorlevel to 0 for not found and 1 for found

Nevertheless,

taskkill /f /im "notepad.exe"

will kill a notepad task if it exists - it can do nothing if no notepad task exists, so you don't really need to test - unless there's something else you want to do...like perhaps

echo off
tasklist /fi "imagename eq notepad.exe" |find ":" > nul
if errorlevel 1 taskkill /f /im "notepad.exe"&exit

which would appear to do as you ask - kill the notepad process if it exists, then exit - otherwise continue with the batch

Execute a large SQL script (with GO commands)

I hit this same issue and eventually just solved it by a simple string replace, replacing the word GO with a semi-colon (;)

All seems to be working fine while executing scripts with in-line comments, block comments, and GO commands

public static bool ExecuteExternalScript(string filePath)
{
    using (StreamReader file = new StreamReader(filePath))
    using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(dbConnStr))
    {
        StringBuilder sql = new StringBuilder();

        string line;
        while ((line = file.ReadLine()) != null)
        {
            // replace GO with semi-colon
            if (line == "GO")
                sql.Append(";");
            // remove inline comments
            else if (line.IndexOf("--") > -1)
                sql.AppendFormat(" {0} ", line.Split(new string[] { "--" }, StringSplitOptions.None)[0]);
            // just the line as it is
            else
                sql.AppendFormat(" {0} ", line);
        }
        conn.Open();

        SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(sql.ToString(), conn);
        cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
    }

    return true;

keytool error Keystore was tampered with, or password was incorrect

Works on Windows

open command prompt (press Windows Key + R then type "cmd" without quotations in the appearing dialogue box and then press Enter Key).

then type the code sniff below :

  1. cd C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_25\bin

then type following command

  1. keytool -list -keystore "C:/Documents and Settings/Your Name/.android/debug.keystore"

Then it will ask for Keystore password now. The default password is "android" type and enter or just hit enter "DONT TYPE ANY PASSWORD".

Excel: last character/string match in a string

tigeravatar and Jean-François Corbett suggested to use this formula to generate the string right of the last occurrence of the "\" character

=TRIM(RIGHT(SUBSTITUTE(A1,"\",REPT(" ",LEN(A1))),LEN(A1)))

If the character used as separator is space, " ", then the formula has to be changed to:

=SUBSTITUTE(RIGHT(SUBSTITUTE(A1," ",REPT("{",LEN(A1))),LEN(A1)),"{","")

No need to mention, the "{" character can be replaced with any character that would not "normally" occur in the text to process.

What is the fastest way to transpose a matrix in C++?

template <class T>
void transpose( const std::vector< std::vector<T> > & a,
std::vector< std::vector<T> > & b,
int width, int height)
{
    for (int i = 0; i < width; i++)
    {
        for (int j = 0; j < height; j++)
        {
            b[j][i] = a[i][j];
        }
    }
}

How to launch jQuery Fancybox on page load?

HTML:

<a id="hidden_link" href="LinkToImage"></a>

    $(document).ready(function() {
        $("#hidden_link").fancybox().trigger('click');
    });
</script>

how can I display tooltip or item information on mouse over?

The simplest way to get tooltips in most browsers is to set some text in the title attribute.

eg.

<img src="myimage.jpg" alt="a cat" title="My cat sat on a table" />

produces (hover your mouse over the image):

a cat http://www.imagechicken.com/uploads/1275939952008633500.jpg

Title attributes can be applied to most HTML elements.

What is the preferred/idiomatic way to insert into a map?

I have been running some time comparisons between the abovementioned versions:

function[0] = 42;
function.insert(std::map<int, int>::value_type(0, 42));
function.insert(std::pair<int, int>(0, 42));
function.insert(std::make_pair(0, 42));

Turns out that time differences between the insert versions are tiny.

#include <map>
#include <vector>
#include <boost/date_time/posix_time/posix_time.hpp>
using namespace boost::posix_time;
class Widget {
public:
    Widget() {
        m_vec.resize(100);
        for(unsigned long it = 0; it < 100;it++) {
            m_vec[it] = 1.0;
        }
    }
    Widget(double el)   {
        m_vec.resize(100);
        for(unsigned long it = 0; it < 100;it++) {
            m_vec[it] = el;
        }
    }
private:
    std::vector<double> m_vec;
};

int main(int argc, char* argv[]) {

    std::map<int,Widget> map_W;
    ptime t1 = boost::posix_time::microsec_clock::local_time();
    for(int it = 0; it < 10000;it++) {
        map_W.insert(std::pair<int,Widget>(it,Widget(2.0)));
    }
    ptime t2 = boost::posix_time::microsec_clock::local_time();
    time_duration diff = t2 - t1;
    std::cout << diff.total_milliseconds() << std::endl;

    std::map<int,Widget> map_W_2;
    ptime t1_2 = boost::posix_time::microsec_clock::local_time();
    for(int it = 0; it < 10000;it++) {
        map_W_2.insert(std::make_pair(it,Widget(2.0)));
    }
    ptime t2_2 = boost::posix_time::microsec_clock::local_time();
    time_duration diff_2 = t2_2 - t1_2;
    std::cout << diff_2.total_milliseconds() << std::endl;

    std::map<int,Widget> map_W_3;
    ptime t1_3 = boost::posix_time::microsec_clock::local_time();
    for(int it = 0; it < 10000;it++) {
        map_W_3[it] = Widget(2.0);
    }
    ptime t2_3 = boost::posix_time::microsec_clock::local_time();
    time_duration diff_3 = t2_3 - t1_3;
    std::cout << diff_3.total_milliseconds() << std::endl;

    std::map<int,Widget> map_W_0;
    ptime t1_0 = boost::posix_time::microsec_clock::local_time();
    for(int it = 0; it < 10000;it++) {
        map_W_0.insert(std::map<int,Widget>::value_type(it,Widget(2.0)));
    }
    ptime t2_0 = boost::posix_time::microsec_clock::local_time();
    time_duration diff_0 = t2_0 - t1_0;
    std::cout << diff_0.total_milliseconds() << std::endl;

    system("pause");
}

This gives respectively for the versions (I ran the file 3 times, hence the 3 consecutive time differences for each):

map_W.insert(std::pair<int,Widget>(it,Widget(2.0)));

2198 ms, 2078 ms, 2072 ms

map_W_2.insert(std::make_pair(it,Widget(2.0)));

2290 ms, 2037 ms, 2046 ms

 map_W_3[it] = Widget(2.0);

2592 ms, 2278 ms, 2296 ms

 map_W_0.insert(std::map<int,Widget>::value_type(it,Widget(2.0)));

2234 ms, 2031 ms, 2027 ms

Hence, results between different insert versions can be neglected (didn't perform a hypothesis test though)!

The map_W_3[it] = Widget(2.0); version takes about 10-15 % more time for this example due to an initialization with the default constructor for Widget.

What is the best way to search the Long datatype within an Oracle database?

You can use this example without using temp table:

DECLARE

  l_var VARCHAR2(32767); -- max length

BEGIN

FOR rec IN (SELECT ID, LONG_COLUMN FROM TABLE_WITH_LONG_COLUMN) LOOP
  l_var := rec.LONG_COLUMN;
  IF l_var LIKE '%350%' THEN -- is there '350' string?
    dbms_output.put_line('ID:' || rec.ID || ' COLUMN:' || rec.LONG_COLUMN);
  END IF;
END LOOP;

END;

Of course there is a problem if LONG has more than 32K characters.

How to consume a SOAP web service in Java

I will use CXF also you can think of AXIS 2 .

The best way to do it may be using JAX RS Refer this example

Example:

wsimport -p stockquote http://stockquote.xyz/quote?wsdl

This will generate the Java artifacts and compile them by importing the http://stockquote.xyz/quote?wsdl.

I

Catching exceptions from Guzzle

In my case I was throwing Exception on a namespaced file, so php tried to catch My\Namespace\Exception therefore not catching any exceptions at all.

Worth checking if catch (Exception $e) is finding the right Exception class.

Just try catch (\Exception $e) (with that \ there) and see if it works.

Reading integers from binary file in Python

When you read from a binary file, a data type called bytes is used. This is a bit like list or tuple, except it can only store integers from 0 to 255.

Try:

file_size = fin.read(4)
file_size0 = file_size[0]
file_size1 = file_size[1]
file_size2 = file_size[2]
file_size3 = file_size[3]

Or:

file_size = list(fin.read(4))

Instead of:

file_size = int(fin.read(4))
