To install g++ *WITHOUT* having to download the MASSIVE 4.7G xCode install, try this package:

The DMG files linked on that page are ~270M and much quicker to install. This was perfect for me, getting homebrew up and running with a minimum of hassle.

The github project itself is basically a script that repackages just the critical chunks of xCode for distribution. In order to run that script and build the DMG files, you'd need to already have an XCode install, which would kind of defeat the point, so the pre-built DMG files are hosted on the project page.

White space at top of page

If nothing of the above helps, check if there is margin-top set on some of the (some levels below) nested DOM element(s).

It will be not recognizable when you inspect body element itself in the debugger. It will only be visible when you unfold several elements nested down in body element in Chrome Dev Tools elements debugger and check if there is one of them with margin-top set.

The below is the upper part of a site screen shot and the corresponding Chrome Dev Tools view when you inspect body tag.

No sign of top margin here and you have resetted all the browser-scpecific CSS properties as per answers above but that unwanted white space is still here.

The following is a view when you inspect the right nested element. It is clearly seen the orange'ish top-margin is set on it. This is the one that causes the white space on top of body element.

On that found element replace margin-top with padding-top if you need space above it and yet not to leak it above the body tag.

There is a simple and very common technique by using 2 background images: a crisp and a blurry one. You set the crisp image as a background for the body and the blurry one as a background image for your container. The blurry image must be set to fixed positioning and the alignment is 100% perfect. I used it before and it works.

The width method no longer requires the dimensions plugin, because it has been added to the jQuery Core

What you need to do is get the padding, margin and border width-values of that particular div and add them to the result of the width method

Android Device not recognized by adb

Fundamentally, the issue has to do with not being able to get MTP+ADB working while for example PTP+ADB may work. In my case when I plugged Nexus 5, windows 7 will install only MTP driver completely ignoring ADB. I couldn't find a good solution for this problem anywhere else so here I provide steps (some of the steps I copied from other sources):

0) Unplug Nexus 5. Make sure you selected MTP and ADB.

1) Make sure that sdk\extras\google\usb_driverandroid_winusb.inf in Google SDK had the following lines (in two places in that file):

NOTE: VID_18D1 is Google VID, PID_4EE2 is PID for MTP+ADB, MI_01 means that ADB is on interface 1 (MTP is on interface 0).

You can check what is on what interface by plugging Nexus 5 into a Linux system and typing lsusb.

2) first delete all installed Google USB drivers. One good tool is called USBDeview and can be find at the following location: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html Download the tool and run it (there is no need to install it). Take a look at the colored status indicator on the far-left of the USBDeview window. Green indicates the the device functions properly. Pink means the device can unplug and works properly (although it may not actually work properly). Red indicates a disabled USB device. Gray (circled, below) means the device is installed, but not connected. Second, remove all gray items with the words “Google”, “Linux”, “ADB”, or “Android” in the title.

3) Now delete old cached Google *.inf files. Open a Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\INF directory. Somewhere in there there is an "oemN.inf" file (where N is a number that will vary on your system) that is a copy of the android_usb.inf -- the thing to do is to find which file and remove it. Windows keeps a cache of the INF files here and what we found is that sometimes an older cached copy is used instead of a newer version.

One simple way to find which one using the Windows Explorer: - In the explorer's Search box, enter "androidwinusb86.cat" without the quotes. - Typically the search will be empty because no filename has this pattern. - Go to Tools/Folder Options, click Search Tab and click Always search file name and contents. Click Apply - Search again. This time it should list a few files such as "oem90.inf" (you'll have one or more, with different numbers).

Now use the Windows Explorer and delete the "oemNN.*" files that matched above (only those with androidwinusb in them.).

4) We now want to disable installation of MTP by windows before windows discovers ADB. Now search for wpdmtp.* files in the same directory. Presence of these files will force install MTP disregarding ADB class in the same (composite) device. Move these files out of \inf folder

5) plug in the device again. This time, both MTP and Android ADB driver installation will fail.

6) Find Other devices in the Device Manager and when expanded it should show Nexus 5 and MTP. Right click and update Nexus 5 by navigating to the sdk\extras\google\usb_driver\android_winusb.inf.

Move wpdmtp.* files back to \inf folder. Right click MTP device and update.

7) If necessary, confirm on your Nexus 5 that this PC has access to the phone.

8) If everything went as expected you should see in Device Manager the following:

  • Expand Android Device. Right click Android Composite ADB Interface, select Properties, choose tab Details, under Property select Hardware Ids. You should see USB\VID_18D1&PID_4EE2&MI_01

  • Expand Portable devices. Right click Nexus 5, select Properties, choose tab Details, under Property select Hardware Ids. You should see USB\VID_18D1&PID_4EE2&MI_00

Image vs zImage vs uImage

What is the difference between them?

Image: the generic Linux kernel binary image file.

zImage: a compressed version of the Linux kernel image that is self-extracting.

uImage: an image file that has a U-Boot wrapper (installed by the mkimage utility) that includes the OS type and loader information.
A very common practice (e.g. the typical Linux kernel Makefile) is to use a zImage file. Since a zImage file is self-extracting (i.e. needs no external decompressors), the wrapper would indicate that this kernel is "not compressed" even though it actually is.


Note that the author/maintainer of U-Boot considers the (widespread) use of using a zImage inside a uImage questionable:

Actually it's pretty stupid to use a zImage inside an uImage. It is much better to use normal (uncompressed) kernel image, compress it using just gzip, and use this as poayload for mkimage. This way U-Boot does the uncompresiong instead of including yet another uncompressor with each kernel image.

Which type of kernel image do I have to use?

You could choose whatever you want to program for.
For economy of storage, you should probably chose a compressed image over the uncompressed one.
Beware that executing the kernel (presumably the Linux kernel) involves more than just loading the kernel image into memory. Depending on the architecture (e.g. ARM) and the Linux kernel version (e.g. with or without DTB), there are registers and memory buffers that may have to be prepared for the kernel. In one instance there was also hardware initialization that U-Boot performed that had to be replicated.

ADDENDUM

I know that u-boot needs a kernel in uImage format.

That is accurate for all versions of U-Boot which only have the bootm command.
But more recent versions of U-Boot could also have the bootz command that can boot a zImage.

First, given that you have a complex data retrieval scenario, are you sure even SQLite is overkill?

You'll end up having an ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of SQLite, paraphrasing Greenspun's Tenth Rule.

That said, you are very right in saying that choosing a single data structure will impact one or more of searching, sorting or counting, so if performance is paramount and your data is constant, you could consider having more than one structure for different purposes.

Above all, measure what operations will be more common and decide which structure will end up costing less.

This has rudimentary error handling, as that sort of depends on what your application will do in such cases. But this uses file URLs and a more modern api to return the database URL, copying the initial version out of the bundle if it does not already exist, or a nil in case of error.

I came back to this problem now that we are finalizing the game and I just thought to post what worked for me.

This is the method for rotating the Matrix:

So it is prettey straight forward but I find it abit strange that I couldn't get it to work by setRotate followed by postTranslate. Maybe some knows why this doesn't work? Now all the bitmaps rotate properly but it is not without some minor decrease in bitmap quality :/

Is System.nanoTime() completely useless?

I am linking to what essentially is the same discussion where Peter Lawrey is providing a good answer. Why I get a negative elapsed time using System.nanoTime()?

Many people mentioned that in Java System.nanoTime() could return negative time. I for apologize for repeating what other people already said.

  1. nanoTime() is not a clock but CPU cycle counter.
  2. Return value is divided by frequency to look like time.
  3. CPU frequency may fluctuate.
  4. When your thread is scheduled on another CPU, there is a chance of getting nanoTime() which results in a negative difference. That's logical. Counters across CPUs are not synchronized.
  5. In many cases, you could get quite misleading results but you wouldn't be able to tell because delta is not negative. Think about it.
  6. (unconfirmed) I think you may get a negative result even on the same CPU if instructions are reordered. To prevent that, you'd have to invoke a memory barrier serializing your instructions.

It'd be cool if System.nanoTime() returned coreID where it executed.

This is stated really clear in EventEmitter's documentation.

What's wrong about using it?

Angular2 will never guarantee us that EventEmitter will continue being an Observable. So that means refactoring our code if it changes. The only API we must access is its emit() method. We should never subscribe manually to an EventEmitter.

Is Eclipse the best IDE for Java?

I'd agree with some of the others out there saying that NetBeans and IntelliJ are both good IDEs. And I'd say that in using all three (Eclipse + other two), that Eclipse is by far my favorite. I found some of the documentation out-dated, but also found the support community very helpful. I started using Eclipse by jumping into the deep end of the pool: writing an RCP before ever learning the IDE. The IDE was intuitive to use, and when I found the right news groups to post to - most of my questions were already answered. The hardest thing for me (and frustrating, admittedly) was knowing how to phrase my search terms in order to get to the answer that was already posted.

Remember that Eclipse is still "relatively new" as an IDE player, though given that - it's pretty darn robust.

My only complaint about Eclipse is that with each new release, it seems to hog up more resources. With a mid-sized project/workspace, it takes seemingly forever to build (or rebuild) the project. Compared to IntelliJ, it's faster and more intuitive to use.

Since AngularJS does not have directive DOM manipulations as jQuery does, a proper way to modify attributes of one element will be using directive. Through link function of a directive, you have access to both element and its attributes.

Wrapping you whole input inside one directive, you can still introduce ng-model's methods through controller property.

This method will help to decouple the logic of ngmodel with placeholder from controller. If there is no logic between them, you can definitely go as Wagner Francisco said.

How to detect if JavaScript is disabled?

Why don't you just put a hijacked onClick() event handler that will fire only when JS is enabled, and use this to append a parameter (js=true) to the clicked/selected URL (you could also detect a drop down list and change the value- of add a hidden form field). So now when the server sees this parameter (js=true) it knows that JS is enabled and then do your fancy logic server-side.
The down side to this is that the first time a users comes to your site, bookmark, URL, search engine generated URL- you will need to detect that this is a new user so don't look for the NVP appended into the URL, and the server would have to wait for the next click to determine the user is JS enabled/disabled. Also, another downside is that the URL will end up on the browser URL and if this user then bookmarks this URL it will have the js=true NVP, even if the user does not have JS enabled, though on the next click the server would be wise to knowing whether the user still had JS enabled or not. Sigh.. this is fun...

Just to add another example in terms of mobile app development. In iOS and Android, we have Interface Builders, where we can define UI of the apps.

The UI drawn using these Builders is declarative in nature, where we drag and drop the components. The actual drawing happens underneath and performed by the framework and system.

But we can also draw the whole components in code, and that is imperative in nature.

Also, some new languages like Angular JS are focussing on designing UIs declaratively and we may see a lot of other languages offering the same support. Like Java doesn't have any good declarative way to draw native desktop apps in Java swing or Java FX but in the near future, they just might.

IntelliJ does not show project folders

Even after 5 years, and having some experience with idea, I still have this problem all the times. Here is the simplest solution.

  • Delete .idea
  • Start Idea and open project instead of import project

And then, open conf file for your framework, like pom.xml or build.sbt or build.gradle etc and it will automatically prompts to import project and when you click and when it finishes, your project is mostly setup correct.

Since I've already been where you are right now, I think I can "answer" you.

The fact is there is no easy way to make a GUI. GUI's are highly dependent on platform and OS specific code, that's why you should start reading your target platform/OS documentation on window management APIs. The good thing is: there are plenty of libraries that address these limitations and abstract architecture differences into a single multi-platform API. Those suggested before, GTK and Qt, are some of these libraries.

But even these are a little too complicated, since lots of new concepts, data types, namespaces and classes are introduced, all at once. For this reason, they use to come bundled with some GUI WYSIWYG editor. They pretty much make programming software with GUIs possible.

To sum it up, there are also non free "environments" for GUI development such as Visual Studio from Microsoft. For those with Delphi experience backgrounds, Visual Studio may be more familiar. There are also free alternatives to the full Visual Studio environment supplied from Microsoft: Visual Studio Express, which is more than enough for starting on GUI development.

PHP mkdir: Permission denied problem

Late answer for people who find this via google in the future. I ran into the same problem.

NOTE: I AM ON MAC OSX LION

What happens is that apache is being run as the user "_www" and doesn't have permissions to edit any files. You'll notice NO filesystem functions work via php.

How to fix:

Open a finder window and from the menu bar, choose Go > Go To Folder > /private/etc/apache2

now open httpd.conf

find:

User _www 
Group _www

change the username:

User <YOUR LOGIN USERNAME>

Now restart apache by running this form terminal:

sudo apachectl -k restart

If it still doesn't work, I happen to do the following before I did the above. Could be related.

Open terminal and run the following commands: (note, my webserver files are located at /Library/WebServer/www. Change according to your website location)

The reason behind this issue is that the activity being closed before the dialog is dismissed. There are various reasons for the above to happen. The ones mentioned in the posts above are also correct.

I got into a situation, because in the thread, I was calling a function which was throwing exception. Because of which the window was being dismissed and hence the exception.

CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER: return a string instead of displaying the calling page on the screen.

CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER: cUrl won't checkout the certificate

Lots of good answers already. I personally go with awk. For convenience, if you use bash, just add the below to your ~/.bash_profile. And, the next time you log in (or if you source your .bash_profile after this update), you will have a new nifty "nth" function available to pipe your files through.

Execute this or put it in your ~/.bash_profile (if using bash) and reopen bash (or execute source ~/.bach_profile)

Object Required Error in excel VBA

The Set statement is only used for object variables (like Range, Cell or Worksheet in Excel), while the simple equal sign '=' is used for elementary datatypes like Integer. You can find a good explanation for when to use set here.

The other problem is, that your variable g1val isn't actually declared as Integer, but has the type Variant. This is because the Dim statement doesn't work the way you would expect it, here (see example below). The variable has to be followed by its type right away, otherwise its type will default to Variant. You can only shorten your Dim statement this way:

Jaanna, the session parameters in Oracle SQL Developer are dependent on your client computer, while the NLS parameters on PL/SQL is from server.

For example the NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS on client computer can be ',.' while it's '.,' on server.

So when you run script from PL/SQL and Oracle SQL Developer the decimal separator can be completely different for the same script, unless you alter session with your expected NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS in the script.

One way to easily test your session parameter is to do:

Changing default encoding of Python?

First: reload(sys) and setting some random default encoding just regarding the need of an output terminal stream is bad practice. reload often changes things in sys which have been put in place depending on the environment - e.g. sys.stdin/stdout streams, sys.excepthook, etc.

Solving the encode problem on stdout

The best solution I know for solving the encode problem of print'ing unicode strings and beyond-ascii str's (e.g. from literals) on sys.stdout is: to take care of a sys.stdout (file-like object) which is capable and optionally tolerant regarding the needs:

  • When sys.stdout.encoding is None for some reason, or non-existing, or erroneously false or "less" than what the stdout terminal or stream really is capable of, then try to provide a correct .encoding attribute. At last by replacing sys.stdout & sys.stderr by a translating file-like object.

  • When the terminal / stream still cannot encode all occurring unicode chars, and when you don't want to break print's just because of that, you can introduce an encode-with-replace behavior in the translating file-like object.

Using beyond-ascii plain string literals in Python 2 / 2 + 3 code

The only good reason to change the global default encoding (to UTF-8 only) I think is regarding an application source code decision - and not because of I/O stream encodings issues: For writing beyond-ascii string literals into code without being forced to always use u'string' style unicode escaping. This can be done rather consistently (despite what anonbadger's article says) by taking care of a Python 2 or Python 2 + 3 source code basis which uses ascii or UTF-8 plain string literals consistently - as far as those strings potentially undergo silent unicode conversion and move between modules or potentially go to stdout. For that, prefer "# encoding: utf-8" or ascii (no declaration). Change or drop libraries which still rely in a very dumb way fatally on ascii default encoding errors beyond chr #127 (which is rare today).

And do like this at application start (and/or via sitecustomize.py) in addition to the SmartStdout scheme above - without using reload(sys):

Note: plains strings then are implicitely converted from utf-8 to unicode in SmartStdout before being converted to the output stream enconding.

Difference between frontend, backend, and middleware in web development

There are in fact 3 questions in your question :

  • Define frontend, middle and back end
  • How and when do they overlap ?
  • Their associated usual bottlenecks.

What JB King has described is correct, but it is a particular, simple version, where in fact he mapped front, middle and bacn to an MVC layer. He mapped M to the back, V to the front, and C to the middle.

For many people, it is just fine, since they come from the ugly world where even MVC was not applied, and you could have direct DB calls in a view.

However in real, complex web applications, you indeed have two or three different layers, called front, middle and back. Each of them may have an associated database and a controller.

The front-end will be visible by the end-user. It should not be confused with the front-office, which is the UI for parameters and administration of the front. The front-end will usually be some kind of CMS or e-commerce Platform (Magento, etc.)

The middle-end is not compulsory and is where the business logics is. It will be based on a PIM, a MDM tool, or some kind of custom database where you enrich your produts or your articles (for CMS). It'll also be the place where you code business functions that need to be shared between differents frontends (for instance between the PC frontend and the API-based mobile application). Sometimes, an ESB or tool like ActiveMQ will be your middle-end

The back-end will be a 3rd layer, surrouding your source database or your ERP. It may be jsut the API wrting to and reading from your ERP. It may be your supplier DB, if you are doing e-commerce. In fact, it really depends on web projects, but it is always a central repository. It'll be accessed either through a DB call, through an API, or an Hibernate layer, or a full-featured back-end application

This description means that answering the other 2 questions is not possible in this thread, as bottlenecks really depend on what your 3 ends contain : what JB King wrote remains true for simple MVC architectures

at the time the question was asked (5 years ago), maybe the MVC pattern was not yet so widely adopted. Now, there is absolutely no reason why the MVC pattern would not be followed and a view would be tied to DB calls. If you read the question "Are there cases where they MUST overlap, and frontend/backend cannot be separated?" in a broader sense, with 3 different components, then there times when the 3 layers architecture is useless of course. Think of a simple personal blog, you'll not need to pull external data or poll RabbitMQ queues.

If you would like to use method (2) to fill in $templateCache you can do it like this:

MS Access - execute a saved query by name in VBA

You should investigate why VBA can't find queryname.

I have a saved query named qryAddLoginfoRow. It inserts a row with the current time into my loginfo table. That query runs successfully when called by name by CurrentDb.Execute.

My guess is that either queryname is a variable holding the name of a query which doesn't exist in the current database's QueryDefs collection, or queryname is the literal name of an existing query but you didn't enclose it in quotes.

Edit: You need to find a way to accept that queryname does not exist in the current db's QueryDefs collection. Add these 2 lines to your VBA code just before the CurrentDb.Execute line.

In python automatic garbage collection deallocates the variable (pandas DataFrame are also just another object in terms of python). There are different garbage collection strategies that can be tweaked (requires significant learning).

You can manually trigger the garbage collection using

PHP post_max_size overrides upload_max_filesize

upload_max_filesize is the limit of any single file. post_max_size is the limit of the entire body of the request, which could include multiple files.

Given post_max_size = 20M and upload_max_filesize = 6M you could upload up to 3 files of 6M each. If instead post_max_size = 6M and upload_max_filesize = 20M then you could only upload one 6M file before hitting post_max_size. It doesn't help to have upload_max_size > post_max_size.

It's not obvious how to recognize going over post_max_size. $_POST and $_FILES will be empty, but $_SERVER['CONTENT_LENGTH'] will be > 0. If the client just didn't upload any post variables or files, then $_SERVER['CONTENT_LENGTH'] will be 0.

My data set is using a Unix timestamp for the x-axis and a decimal for the y. Change those datatypes to fit your need. I do all the sum calculations in one iteration for the best possible performance.

Copy table without copying data

SHOW CREATE TABLE bar;

you will get a create statement for that table, edit the table name, or anything else you like, and then execute it.

This will allow you to copy the indexes and also manually tweak the table creation.

You can also run the query within a program.

Can I escape html special chars in javascript?

Came across this issue when building a DOM structure. This question helped me solve it. I wanted to use a double chevron as a path separator, but appending a new text node directly resulted in the escaped character code showing, rather than the character itself:
