Programs & Examples On #Paradox

Paradox was created by Borland, as an integrated database management system and application development language for desktops and servers. It ran originally under DOS and later under Windows. It is a file based database system with each table in a separate file or files. Paradox for DOS had a built-in scripting language known as PAL, and used tables through version 4.5. Paradox for Windows was a Windows application that included event processing.

nullable object must have a value

In this case oldDTE is null, so when you try to access oldDTE.Value the InvalidOperationException is thrown since there is no value. In your example you can simply do:

this.MyDateTime = newDT.MyDateTime;

Combine two data frames by rows (rbind) when they have different sets of columns

You could also just pull out the common column names.

> cols <- intersect(colnames(df1), colnames(df2))
> rbind(df1[,cols], df2[,cols])

Return different type of data from a method in java?

I create various return types using enum. It doesn't defined automatically. That implementation look like factory pattern.

public  enum  SmartReturn {

    IntegerType, DoubleType;

    @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
    public <T> T comeback(String value) {
        switch (this) {
            case IntegerType:
                return (T) Integer.valueOf(value);
            case DoubleType:
                return (T) Double.valueOf(value);
            default:
                return null;
        }
    }
}

Unit Test:

public class MultipleReturnTypeTest {

  @Test
  public void returnIntegerOrString() {
     Assert.assertTrue(SmartReturn.IntegerType.comeback("1") instanceof Integer);
     Assert.assertTrue(SmartReturn.DoubleType.comeback("1") instanceof Double);
  }

}

How to set breakpoints in inline Javascript in Google Chrome?

Using Visual Studio (2012) I had the same issue and switching to IIS Express solved the problem!

The script tag's type attribute did not factor into it.

For some reason the Visual Studio Development Server does not provide everything Chrome needs to enable the breakpoints.

Angularjs if-then-else construction in expression

You can easily use ng-show such as :

    <div ng-repeater="item in items">
        <div>{{item.description}}</div>
        <div ng-show="isExists(item)">available</div>
        <div ng-show="!isExists(item)">oh no, you don't have it</div>
    </div>

For more complex tests, you can use ng-switch statements :

    <div ng-repeater="item in items">
        <div>{{item.description}}</div>
        <div ng-switch on="isExists(item)">
            <span ng-switch-when="true">Available</span>
            <span ng-switch-default>oh no, you don't have it</span>
        </div>
    </div>

Change value of input placeholder via model?

The accepted answer still threw a Javascript error in IE for me (for Angular 1.2 at least). It is a bug but the workaround is to use ngAttr detailed on https://docs.angularjs.org/guide/interpolation

<input type="text" ng-model="inputText" ng-attr-placeholder="{{somePlaceholder}}" />

Issue: https://github.com/angular/angular.js/issues/5025

Copy Paste Values only( xlPasteValues )

this do things at a very fast way.

Kill detached screen session

For me a simple

works. This is from within the screen session.

Volley - POST/GET parameters

To provide POST parameter send your parameter as JSONObject in to the JsonObjectRequest constructor. 3rd parameter accepts a JSONObject that is used in Request body.

JSONObject paramJson = new JSONObject();

paramJson.put("key1", "value1");
paramJson.put("key2", "value2");

JsonObjectRequest jsonObjectRequest = new JsonObjectRequest(Request.Method.POST,url,paramJson,
    new Response.Listener<JSONObject>() {
        @Override
        public void onResponse(JSONObject response) {

        }
    },
    new Response.ErrorListener() {
        @Override
        public void onErrorResponse(VolleyError error) {

        }
    });
requestQueue.add(jsonObjectRequest);

Django - filtering on foreign key properties

This has been possible since the queryset-refactor branch landed pre-1.0. Ticket 4088 exposed the problem. This should work:

Asset.objects.filter(
    desc__contains=filter,
    project__name__contains="Foo").order_by("desc")

The Django Many-to-one documentation has this and other examples of following Foreign Keys using the Model API.

CentOS: Enabling GD Support in PHP Installation

The thing that did the trick for me eventually was:

yum install gd gd-devel php-gd

and then restart apache:

How do I import .sql files into SQLite 3?

You can also do:

Python creating a dictionary of lists

You can use defaultdict:

>>> from collections import defaultdict
>>> d = defaultdict(list)
>>> a = ['1', '2']
>>> for i in a:
...   for j in range(int(i), int(i) + 2):
...     d[j].append(i)
...
>>> d
defaultdict(<type 'list'>, {1: ['1'], 2: ['1', '2'], 3: ['2']})
>>> d.items()
[(1, ['1']), (2, ['1', '2']), (3, ['2'])]

How can query string parameters be forwarded through a proxy_pass with nginx?

From the proxy_pass documentation:

A special case is using variables in the proxy_pass statement: The requested URL is not used and you are fully responsible to construct the target URL yourself.

Since you're using $1 in the target, nginx relies on you to tell it exactly what to pass. You can fix this in two ways. First, stripping the beginning of the uri with a proxy_pass is trivial:

location /service/ {
  # Note the trailing slash on the proxy_pass.
  # It tells nginx to replace /service/ with / when passing the request.
  proxy_pass http://apache/;
}

Or if you want to use the regex location, just include the args:

location ~* ^/service/(.*) {
  proxy_pass http://apache/$1$is_args$args;
}

Convert unix time stamp to date in java

You need to convert it to milliseconds by multiplying the timestamp by 1000:

java.util.Date dateTime=new java.util.Date((long)timeStamp*1000);

Validate that text field is numeric usiung jQuery

I'm not certain when this was implemented, but currently you can use http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.isNumeric/

if($('#Field').val() != "")
{
    if($.isNumeric($('#Field').val()) {
        errors+= "Field must be numeric.<br/>";
        success = false;
    }
}

Working with dictionaries/lists in R

I'll just comment you can get a lot of mileage out of table when trying to "fake" a dictionary also, e.g.

> x <- c("a","a","b","b","b","c")
> (t <- table(x))
x
a b c
2 3 1
> names(t)
[1] "a" "b" "c"
> o <- order(as.numeric(t))
> names(t[o])
[1] "c" "a" "b"

etc.

Select all DIV text with single mouse click

$.fn.selectText = function () {
    return $(this).each(function (index, el) {
        if (document.selection) {
            var range = document.body.createTextRange();
            range.moveToElementText(el);
            range.select();
        } else if (window.getSelection) {
            var range = document.createRange();
            range.selectNode(el);
            window.getSelection().addRange(range);
        }
    });
}

Above answer is not working in Chrome because addRange remove previous added range. I didnt find any solution for this beside fake selection with css.

Using Google Text-To-Speech in Javascript

Very easy with responsive voice. Just include the js and voila!

Fastest JavaScript summation

What about summing both extremities? It would cut time in half. Like so:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8; sum = 0

2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7; sum = 10

3, 4, 5, 6; sum = 19

4, 5; sum = 28

sum = 37

One algorithm could be:

function sum_array(arr){
    let sum = 0,
        length = arr.length,
        half = Math.floor(length/2)

    for (i = 0; i < half; i++) {
        sum += arr[i] + arr[length - 1 - i]
    }
    if (length%2){
        sum += arr[half]
    }
    return sum
}

It performs faster when I test it on the browser with performance.now(). I think this is a better way. What do you guys think?

Can't get private key with openssl (no start line:pem_lib.c:703:Expecting: ANY PRIVATE KEY)

It looks like you have a certificate in DER format instead of PEM. This is why it works correctly when you provide the -inform PEM command line argument (which tells openssl what input format to expect).

It's likely that your private key is using the same encoding. It looks as if the openssl rsa command also accepts a -inform argument, so try:

openssl rsa -text -in file.key -inform DER

A PEM encoded file is a plain-text encoding that looks something like:

-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
MIGrAgEAAiEA0tlSKz5Iauj6ud3helAf5GguXeLUeFFTgHrpC3b2O20CAwEAAQIh
ALeEtAIzebCkC+bO+rwNFVORb0bA9xN2n5dyTw/Ba285AhEA9FFDtx4VAxMVB2GU
QfJ/2wIRANzuXKda/nRXIyRw1ArE2FcCECYhGKRXeYgFTl7ch7rTEckCEQDTMShw
8pL7M7DsTM7l3HXRAhAhIMYKQawc+Y7MNE4kQWYe
-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----

While DER is a binary encoding format.

Update

Sometimes keys are distributed in PKCS#8 format (which can be either PEM or DER encoded). Try this and see what you get:

openssl pkcs8 -in file.key -inform der

Error: Failed to execute 'appendChild' on 'Node': parameter 1 is not of type 'Node'

It's actually a simple answer.

Your function is returning a string rather than the div node. appendChild can only append a node.

For example, if you try to appendChild the string:

var z = '<p>test satu dua tiga</p>'; // is a string
document.body.appendChild(z);

The above code will never work. What will work is:

var z = document.createElement('p'); // is a node
z.innerHTML = 'test satu dua tiga';
document.body.appendChild(z);

.mp4 file not playing in chrome

Encountering the same problem, I solved this by reconverting the file with default mp4 settings in iMovie.

What is the difference between YAML and JSON?

GIT and YAML

The other answers are good. Read those first. But I'll add one other reason to use YAML sometimes: git.

Increasingly, many programming projects use git repositories for distribution and archival. And, while a git repo's history can equally store JSON and YAML files, the "diff" method used for tracking and displaying changes to a file is line-oriented. Since YAML is forced to be line-oriented, any small changes in a YAML file are easier to see by a human.

It is true, of course, that JSON files can be "made pretty" by sorting the strings/keys and adding indentation. But this is not the default and I'm lazy.

Personally, I generally use JSON for system-to-system interaction. I often use YAML for config files, static files, and tracked files. (I also generally avoid adding YAML relational anchors. Life is too short to hunt down loops.)

Also, if speed and space are really a concern, I don't use either. You might want to look at BSON.

How set maximum date in datepicker dialog in android?

Use setMaxDate().

For example, replace return new DatePickerDialog(this, pDateSetListener, pYear, pMonth, pDay) statement with something like this:

    DatePickerDialog dialog = new DatePickerDialog(this, pDateSetListener, pYear, pMonth, pDay);
    dialog.getDatePicker().setMaxDate(new Date().getTime());
    return dialog;

How to filter input type="file" dialog by specific file type?

Add a custom attribute to <input type="file" file-accept="jpg gif jpeg png bmp"> and read the filenames within javascript that matches the extension provided by the attribute file-accept. This will be kind of bogus, as a text file with any of the above extension will erroneously deteted as image.

How to uninstall Jenkins?

Fast and Lean PDF Viewer for iPhone / iPad / iOS - tips and hints?

I have build such kind of application using approximatively the same approach except :

  • I cache the generated image on the disk and always generate two to three images in advance in a separate thread.
  • I don't overlay with a UIImage but instead draw the image in the layer when zooming is 1. Those tiles will be released automatically when memory warnings are issued.

Whenever the user start zooming, I acquire the CGPDFPage and render it using the appropriate CTM. The code in - (void)drawLayer: (CALayer*)layer inContext: (CGContextRef) context is like :

CGAffineTransform currentCTM = CGContextGetCTM(context);
if (currentCTM.a == 1.0 && baseImage) {
    //Calculate ideal scale
    CGFloat scaleForWidth = baseImage.size.width/self.bounds.size.width;
    CGFloat scaleForHeight = baseImage.size.height/self.bounds.size.height;
    CGFloat imageScaleFactor = MAX(scaleForWidth, scaleForHeight);

    CGSize imageSize = CGSizeMake(baseImage.size.width/imageScaleFactor, baseImage.size.height/imageScaleFactor);
    CGRect imageRect = CGRectMake((self.bounds.size.width-imageSize.width)/2, (self.bounds.size.height-imageSize.height)/2, imageSize.width, imageSize.height);
    CGContextDrawImage(context, imageRect, [baseImage CGImage]);
} else {
    @synchronized(issue) {
        CGPDFPageRef pdfPage = CGPDFDocumentGetPage(issue.pdfDoc, pageIndex+1);
        pdfToPageTransform = CGPDFPageGetDrawingTransform(pdfPage, kCGPDFMediaBox, layer.bounds, 0, true);
        CGContextConcatCTM(context, pdfToPageTransform);
        CGContextDrawPDFPage(context, pdfPage);
    }
}

issue is the object containg the CGPDFDocumentRef. I synchronize the part where I access the pdfDoc property because I release it and recreate it when receiving memoryWarnings. It seems that the CGPDFDocumentRef object do some internal caching that I did not find how to get rid of.

HTTP error 403 in Python 3 Web Scraping

If you feel guilty about faking the user-agent as Mozilla (comment in the top answer from Stefano), it could work with a non-urllib User-Agent as well. This worked for the sites I reference:

    req = urlrequest.Request(link, headers={'User-Agent': 'XYZ/3.0'})
    urlrequest.urlopen(req, timeout=10).read()

My application is to test validity by scraping specific links that I refer to, in my articles. Not a generic scraper.

Create excel ranges using column numbers in vba?

These answers seem strangely convoluted. Unless I'm missing something...if you want to convert numbers to letters, you can just stock them all in an array using a for loop then call on the number associated with that column letter. Like so

For intloop = 1 To 26
    colcheck(intloop) = Chr$(64 + intloop)
    For lenloop = 1 To 26
        colcheck((intloop * 26) + lenloop) = Chr$(64 + intloop) & Chr$(64 + lenloop)
        For terloop = 1 To 26
            colcheck((intloop * 676) + (lenloop * 26) + terloop) = Chr$(64 + intloop) & Chr$(64 + lenloop) & Chr$(64 + terloop)
            For qualoop = 1 To 26
                colcheck((intloop * 17576) + (lenloop * 676) + (terloop * 26) + qualoop) = Chr$(64 + intloop) & Chr$(64 + lenloop) & Chr$(64 + terloop) & Chr$(64 + qualoop)
            Next qualoop
        Next terloop
    Next lenloop
Next intloop

Then just use colcheck(yourcolumnnumberhere) and you will get the column heading associated with that letter (i.e. colcheck(703) = AAA

PHP Get URL with Parameter

How to specify the default error page in web.xml?

You can also specify <error-page> for exceptions using <exception-type>, eg below:

<error-page>
    <exception-type>java.lang.Exception</exception-type>
    <location>/errorpages/exception.html</location>
</error-page>

Or map a error code using <error-code>:

<error-page>
    <error-code>404</error-code>
    <location>/errorpages/404error.html</location>
</error-page>

Hour from DateTime? in 24 hours format

Using ToString("HH:mm") certainly gives you what you want as a string.

If you want the current hour/minute as numbers, string manipulation isn't necessary; you can use the TimeOfDay property:

TimeSpan timeOfDay = fechaHora.TimeOfDay;
int hour = timeOfDay.Hours;
int minute = timeOfDay.Minutes;

Table columns, setting both min and max width with css

Tables work differently; sometimes counter-intuitively.

The solution is to use width on the table cells instead of max-width.

Although it may sound like in that case the cells won't shrink below the given width, they will actually.
with no restrictions on c, if you give the table a width of 70px, the widths of a, b and c will come out as 16, 42 and 12 pixels, respectively.
With a table width of 400 pixels, they behave like you say you expect in your grid above.
Only when you try to give the table too small a size (smaller than a.min+b.min+the content of C) will it fail: then the table itself will be wider than specified.

I made a snippet based on your fiddle, in which I removed all the borders and paddings and border-spacing, so you can measure the widths more accurately.

What is the difference between window, screen, and document in Javascript?

The window is the first thing that gets loaded into the browser. This window object has the majority of the properties like length, innerWidth, innerHeight, name, if it has been closed, its parents, and more.

The document object is your html, aspx, php, or other document that will be loaded into the browser. The document actually gets loaded inside the window object and has properties available to it like title, URL, cookie, etc. What does this really mean? That means if you want to access a property for the window it is window.property, if it is document it is window.document.property which is also available in short as document.property.

How to get all registered routes in Express?

express 3.x

Okay, found it myself ... it's just app.routes :-)

express 4.x

Applications - built with express()

app._router.stack

Routers - built with express.Router()

router.stack

Note: The stack includes the middleware functions too, it should be filtered to get the "routes" only.

Subclipse svn:ignore

It seems Subclipse only allows you to add a top-level folder to ignore list and not any sub folders under it. Not sure why it works this way. However, I found out by trial and error that if you directly add a sub-folder to version control, then it will allow you to add another folder at the same level to the ignore list.

alt text

For example, refer fig above, when I wanted to ignore the webapp folder without adding src, subclipse was not allowing me to do so. But when I added the java folder to version control, the "add to svn:ignore..." was enabled for webapp.

How to upgrade rubygems

Or:

gem update `gem outdated | cut -d ' ' -f 1`

Don't understand why UnboundLocalError occurs (closure)

To modify a global variable inside a function, you must use the global keyword.

When you try to do this without the line

global counter

inside of the definition of increment, a local variable named counter is created so as to keep you from mucking up the counter variable that the whole program may depend on.

Note that you only need to use global when you are modifying the variable; you could read counter from within increment without the need for the global statement.

How do I get the value of a registry key and ONLY the value using powershell

Given a key \SQL with two properties:

enter image description here

I'd grab the "MSSQLSERVER" one with the following in-cases where I wasn't sure what the property name was going to be to use dot-notation:

$regkey_property_name = 'MSSQLSERVER'
$regkey = get-item -Path 'HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names\SQL'
$regkey.GetValue($regkey_property_name)

A non-blocking read on a subprocess.PIPE in Python

Existing solutions did not work for me (details below). What finally worked was to implement readline using read(1) (based on this answer). The latter does not block:

from subprocess import Popen, PIPE
from threading import Thread
def process_output(myprocess): #output-consuming thread
    nextline = None
    buf = ''
    while True:
        #--- extract line using read(1)
        out = myprocess.stdout.read(1)
        if out == '' and myprocess.poll() != None: break
        if out != '':
            buf += out
            if out == '\n':
                nextline = buf
                buf = ''
        if not nextline: continue
        line = nextline
        nextline = None

        #--- do whatever you want with line here
        print 'Line is:', line
    myprocess.stdout.close()

myprocess = Popen('myprogram.exe', stdout=PIPE) #output-producing process
p1 = Thread(target=process_output, args=(dcmpid,)) #output-consuming thread
p1.daemon = True
p1.start()

#--- do whatever here and then kill process and thread if needed
if myprocess.poll() == None: #kill process; will automatically stop thread
    myprocess.kill()
    myprocess.wait()
if p1 and p1.is_alive(): #wait for thread to finish
    p1.join()

Why existing solutions did not work:

  1. Solutions that require readline (including the Queue based ones) always block. It is difficult (impossible?) to kill the thread that executes readline. It only gets killed when the process that created it finishes, but not when the output-producing process is killed.
  2. Mixing low-level fcntl with high-level readline calls may not work properly as anonnn has pointed out.
  3. Using select.poll() is neat, but doesn't work on Windows according to python docs.
  4. Using third-party libraries seems overkill for this task and adds additional dependencies.

How can I enable CORS on Django REST Framework

For Django versions > 1.10, according to the documentation, a custom MIDDLEWARE can be written as a function, let's say in the file: yourproject/middleware.py (as a sibling of settings.py):

def open_access_middleware(get_response):
    def middleware(request):
        response = get_response(request)
        response["Access-Control-Allow-Origin"] = "*"
        response["Access-Control-Allow-Headers"] = "*"
        return response
    return middleware

and finally, add the python path of this function (w.r.t. the root of your project) to the MIDDLEWARE list in your project's settings.py:

MIDDLEWARE = [
  .
  .
  'django.middleware.clickjacking.XFrameOptionsMiddleware',
  'yourproject.middleware.open_access_middleware'
]

Firewalld is a bit non-intuitive for the iptables veteran. For those who prefer an iptables-driven firewall with iptables-like syntax in an easy configurable tree, try replacing firewalld with fwtree: https://www.linuxglobal.com/fwtree-flexible-linux-tree-based-firewall/ and then do the following:

 echo '-p tcp --dport 80 -m conntrack --cstate NEW -j ACCEPT' > /etc/fwtree.d/filter/INPUT/80-allow.rule
 systemctl reload fwtree

UILabel - auto-size label to fit text?

Use [label sizeToFit]; to adjust the text in UILabel

What's the strangest corner case you've seen in C# or .NET?

In an API we're using, methods that return a domain object might return a special "null object". In the implementation of this, the comparison operator and the Equals() method are overridden to return true if it is compared with null.

So a user of this API might have some code like this:

return test != null ? test : GetDefault();

or perhaps a bit more verbose, like this:

if (test == null)
    return GetDefault();
return test;

where GetDefault() is a method returning some default value that we want to use instead of null. The surprise hit me when I was using ReSharper and following it's recommendation to rewrite either of this to the following:

return test ?? GetDefault();

If the test object is a null object returned from the API instead of a proper null, the behavior of the code has now changed, as the null coalescing operator actually checks for null, not running operator= or Equals().

MySQL select one column DISTINCT, with corresponding other columns

As pointed out by fyrye, the accepted answer pertains to older versions of MySQL in which ONLY_FULL_GROUP_BY had not yet been introduced. With MySQL 8.0.17 (used in this example), unless you disable ONLY_FULL_GROUP_BY you would get the following error message:

mysql> SELECT id, firstName, lastName FROM table_name GROUP BY firstName;

ERROR 1055 (42000): Expression #1 of SELECT list is not in GROUP BY clause and contains nonaggregated column 'mydatabase.table_name.id' which is not functionally dependent on columns in GROUP BY clause; this is incompatible with sql_mode=only_full_group_by

One way to work around this not mentioned by fyrye, but described in https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/group-by-handling.html, is to apply the ANY_VALUE() function to the columns which are not in the GROUP BY clause (id and lastName in this example):

mysql> SELECT ANY_VALUE(id) as id, firstName, ANY_VALUE(lastName) as lastName FROM table_name GROUP BY firstName;
+----+-----------+----------+
| id | firstName | lastName |
+----+-----------+----------+
|  1 | John      | Doe      |
|  2 | Bugs      | Bunny    |
+----+-----------+----------+
2 rows in set (0.01 sec)

As written in the aforementioned docs,

In this case, MySQL ignores the nondeterminism of address values within each name group and accepts the query. This may be useful if you simply do not care which value of a nonaggregated column is chosen for each group. ANY_VALUE() is not an aggregate function, unlike functions such as SUM() or COUNT(). It simply acts to suppress the test for nondeterminism.

Excel VBA select range at last row and column

Another simple way:

ActiveSheet.Rows(ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows.Count+1).Select
Selection.EntireRow.Delete

or simpler:

ActiveSheet.Rows(ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows.Count+1).EntireRow.Delete

Using a list as a data source for DataGridView

First, I don't understand why you are adding all the keys and values count times, Index is never used.

I tried this example :

        var source = new BindingSource();
        List<MyStruct> list = new List<MyStruct> { new MyStruct("fff", "b"),  new MyStruct("c","d") };
        source.DataSource = list;
        grid.DataSource = source;

and that work pretty well, I get two columns with the correct names. MyStruct type exposes properties that the binding mechanism can use.

    class MyStruct
   {
    public string Name { get; set; }
    public string Adres { get; set; }

    public MyStruct(string name, string adress)
    {
        Name = name;
        Adres = adress;
    }
  }

Try to build a type that takes one key and value, and add it one by one. Hope this helps.

How to stop event propagation with inline onclick attribute?

For ASP.NET web pages (not MVC), you can use Sys.UI.DomEvent object as wrapper of native event.

<div onclick="event.stopPropagation();" ...

or, pass event as a parameter to inner function:

<div onclick="someFunction(event);" ...

and in someFunction:

function someFunction(event){
    event.stopPropagation(); // here Sys.UI.DomEvent.stopPropagation() method is used
    // other onclick logic
}

How to use PDO to fetch results array in PHP?

There are three ways to fetch multiple rows returned by PDO statement.

The simplest one is just to iterate over PDOStatement itself:

$stmt = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * FROM auction WHERE name LIKE ?")
$stmt->execute(array("%$query%"));
// iterating over a statement
foreach($stmt as $row) {
    echo $row['name'];
}

another one is to fetch rows using fetch() method inside a familiar while statement:

$stmt = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * FROM auction WHERE name LIKE ?")
$stmt->execute(array("%$query%"));
// using while
while($row = $stmt->fetch()) {
    echo $row['name'];
}

but for the modern web application we should have our datbase iteractions separated from output and thus the most convenient method would be to fetch all rows at once using fetchAll() method:

$stmt = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * FROM auction WHERE name LIKE ?")
$stmt->execute(array("%$query%"));
// fetching rows into array
$data = $stmt->fetchAll();

or, if you need to preprocess some data first, use the while loop and collect the data into array manually

$result = [];
$stmt = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * FROM auction WHERE name LIKE ?")
$stmt->execute(array("%$query%"));
// using while
while($row = $stmt->fetch()) {
    $result[] = [
        'newname' => $row['oldname'],
        // etc
    ];
}

and then output them in a template:

<ul>
<?php foreach($data as $row): ?>
    <li><?=$row['name']?></li>
<?php endforeach ?>
</ul>

Note that PDO supports many sophisticated fetch modes, allowing fetchAll() to return data in many different formats.

Getting a count of rows in a datatable that meet certain criteria

Try this

int numberOfRecords = dtFoo.Select("IsActive = 'Y'").Count<DataRow>();
Console.WriteLine("Count: " + numberOfRecords.ToString());

How to correctly iterate through getElementsByClassName

If you use the new querySelectorAll you can call forEach directly.

document.querySelectorAll('.edit').forEach(function(button) {
    // Now do something with my button
});

Per the comment below. nodeLists do not have a forEach function.

If using this with babel you can add Array.from and it will convert non node lists to a forEach array. Array.from does not work natively in browsers below and including IE 11.

Array.from(document.querySelectorAll('.edit')).forEach(function(button) {
    // Now do something with my button
});

At our meetup last night I discovered another way to handle node lists not having forEach

[...document.querySelectorAll('.edit')].forEach(function(button) {
    // Now do something with my button
});

Evaluating a mathematical expression in a string

This is a massively late reply, but I think useful for future reference. Rather than write your own math parser (although the pyparsing example above is great) you could use SymPy. I don't have a lot of experience with it, but it contains a much more powerful math engine than anyone is likely to write for a specific application and the basic expression evaluation is very easy:

>>> import sympy
>>> x, y, z = sympy.symbols('x y z')
>>> sympy.sympify("x**3 + sin(y)").evalf(subs={x:1, y:-3})
0.858879991940133

Very cool indeed! A from sympy import * brings in a lot more function support, such as trig functions, special functions, etc., but I've avoided that here to show what's coming from where.

Convert json to a C# array?

Old question but worth adding an answer if using .NET Core 3.0 or later. JSON serialization/deserialization is built into the framework (System.Text.Json), so you don't have to use third party libraries any more. Here's an example based off the top answer given by @Icarus

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;

namespace ConsoleApp
{
    class Program
    {
        static void Main(string[] args)
        {
            var json = "[{\"Name\":\"John Smith\", \"Age\":35}, {\"Name\":\"Pablo Perez\", \"Age\":34}]";

            // use the built in Json deserializer to convert the string to a list of Person objects
            var people = System.Text.Json.JsonSerializer.Deserialize<List<Person>>(json);

            foreach (var person in people)
            {
                Console.WriteLine(person.Name + " is " + person.Age + " years old.");
            }
        }

        public class Person
        {
            public int Age { get; set; }
            public string Name { get; set; }
        }
    }
}

Java Code for calculating Leap Year

The correct implementation is:

public static boolean isLeapYear(int year) {
  Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance();
  cal.set(Calendar.YEAR, year);
  return cal.getActualMaximum(Calendar.DAY_OF_YEAR) > 365;
}

But if you are going to reinvent this wheel then:

public static boolean isLeapYear(int year) {
  if (year % 4 != 0) {
    return false;
  } else if (year % 400 == 0) {
    return true;
  } else if (year % 100 == 0) {
    return false;
  } else {
    return true;
  }
}

Avoid browser popup blockers

Based on Jason Sebring's very useful tip, and on the stuff covered here and there, I found a perfect solution for my case:

Pseudo code with Javascript snippets:

  1. immediately create a blank popup on user action

     var importantStuff = window.open('', '_blank');

    (Enrich the call to window.open with whatever additional options you need.)

    Optional: add some "waiting" info message. Examples:

    a) An external HTML page: replace the above line with

     var importantStuff = window.open('http://example.com/waiting.html', '_blank');

    b) Text: add the following line below the above one:

     importantStuff.document.write('Loading preview...');

  2. fill it with content when ready (when the AJAX call is returned, for instance)

     importantStuff.location.href = 'https://example.com/finally.html';

    Alternatively, you could close the window here if you don't need it after all (if ajax request fails, for example - thanks to @Goose for the comment):

     importantStuff.close();

I actually use this solution for a mailto redirection, and it works on all my browsers (windows 7, Android). The _blank bit helps for the mailto redirection to work on mobile, btw.

Disable password authentication for SSH

I followed these steps (for Mac).

In /etc/ssh/sshd_config change

#ChallengeResponseAuthentication yes
#PasswordAuthentication yes

to

ChallengeResponseAuthentication no
PasswordAuthentication no

Now generate the RSA key:

ssh-keygen -t rsa -P '' -f ~/.ssh/id_rsa

(For me an RSA key worked. A DSA key did not work.)

A private key will be generated in ~/.ssh/id_rsa along with ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub (public key).

Now move to the .ssh folder: cd ~/.ssh

Enter rm -rf authorized_keys (sometimes multiple keys lead to an error).

Enter vi authorized_keys

Enter :wq to save this empty file

Enter cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Restart the SSH:

sudo launchctl stop com.openssh.sshd
sudo launchctl start com.openssh.sshd

A required class was missing while executing org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-war-plugin:2.1.1:war

My solution below is for cases when default maven repositories are not accessible (e.g. due to firewalls).

In case the default repository is not accessible appropriate local <pluginRepository> has to be specified in the settings.xml. If it's the same as your local artifact repository it still needs to be added to the <pluginRepositories> section for plugin jars to be found. Regular <repositories> section is not used to fetch plugin jars.

In my case, however, the issue was caused by the fact that there were multiple plugin repositories defined in that section.

The first repository in the list did not contain the required maven-filtering jar.

I had to change the order of <pluginRepository> definitions to ensure the first one contains maven-filtering.

Changing of repository definitions typically requires to clean ~/.m2/repository and start fresh.

Optional Parameters in Web Api Attribute Routing

For an incoming request like /v1/location/1234, as you can imagine it would be difficult for Web API to automatically figure out if the value of the segment corresponding to '1234' is related to appid and not to deviceid.

I think you should change your route template to be like [Route("v1/location/{deviceOrAppid?}", Name = "AddNewLocation")] and then parse the deiveOrAppid to figure out the type of id.

Also you need to make the segments in the route template itself optional otherwise the segments are considered as required. Note the ? character in this case. For example: [Route("v1/location/{deviceOrAppid?}", Name = "AddNewLocation")]

Node.js server that accepts POST requests

Receive POST and GET request in nodejs :

1).Server

    var http = require('http');
    var server = http.createServer ( function(request,response){

    response.writeHead(200,{"Content-Type":"text\plain"});
    if(request.method == "GET")
        {
            response.end("received GET request.")
        }
    else if(request.method == "POST")
        {
            response.end("received POST request.");
        }
    else
        {
            response.end("Undefined request .");
        }
});

server.listen(8000);
console.log("Server running on port 8000");

2). Client :

var http = require('http');

var option = {
    hostname : "localhost" ,
    port : 8000 ,
    method : "POST",
    path : "/"
}

    var request = http.request(option , function(resp){
       resp.on("data",function(chunck){
           console.log(chunck.toString());
       })
    })
    request.end();

Difference between os.getenv and os.environ.get

While there is no functional difference between os.environ.get and os.getenv, there is a massive difference between os.putenv and setting entries on os.environ. os.putenv is broken, so you should default to os.environ.get simply to avoid the way os.getenv encourages you to use os.putenv for symmetry.

os.putenv changes the actual OS-level environment variables, but in a way that doesn't show up through os.getenv, os.environ, or any other stdlib way of inspecting environment variables:

>>> import os
>>> os.environ['asdf'] = 'fdsa'
>>> os.environ['asdf']
'fdsa'
>>> os.putenv('aaaa', 'bbbb')
>>> os.getenv('aaaa')
>>> os.environ.get('aaaa')

You'd probably have to make a ctypes call to the C-level getenv to see the real environment variables after calling os.putenv. (Launching a shell subprocess and asking it for its environment variables might work too, if you're very careful about escaping and --norc/--noprofile/anything else you need to do to avoid startup configuration, but it seems a lot harder to get right.)

Rendering a template variable as HTML

autoescape:

{% endautoescape %}

Android ImageButton with a selected state?

This works for me:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <!-- NOTE: order is important (the first matching state(s) is what is rendered) -->
    <item
        android:state_selected="true"
        android:drawable="@drawable/info_icon_solid_with_shadow" />
    <item
        android:drawable="@drawable/info_icon_outline_with_shadow" />
 </selector>

And then in java:

//assign the image in code (or you can do this in your layout xml with the src attribute)
imageButton.setImageDrawable(getBaseContext().getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable....));

//set the click listener
imageButton.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {

    public void onClick(View button) {
        //Set the button's appearance
        button.setSelected(!button.isSelected());

        if (button.isSelected()) {
            //Handle selected state change
        } else {
            //Handle de-select state change
        }

    }

});

For smooth transition you can also mention animation time:

<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:exitFadeDuration="@android:integer/config_mediumAnimTime">

Script parameters in Bash

I needed to make sure that my scripts are entirely portable between various machines, shells and even cygwin versions. Further, my colleagues who were the ones I had to write the scripts for, are programmers, so I ended up using this:

for ((i=1;i<=$#;i++));
do

    if [ ${!i} = "-s" ]
    then ((i++))
        var1=${!i};

    elif [ ${!i} = "-log" ];
    then ((i++))
        logFile=${!i};

    elif [ ${!i} = "-x" ];
    then ((i++))
        var2=${!i};

    elif [ ${!i} = "-p" ];
    then ((i++))
        var3=${!i};

    elif [ ${!i} = "-b" ];
    then ((i++))
        var4=${!i};

    elif [ ${!i} = "-l" ];
    then ((i++))
        var5=${!i};

    elif [ ${!i} = "-a" ];
    then ((i++))
        var6=${!i};
    fi

done;

Rationale: I included a launcher.sh script as well, since the whole operation had several steps which were quasi independent on each other (I'm saying "quasi", because even though each script could be run on its own, they were usually all run together), and in two days I found out, that about half of my colleagues, being programmers and all, were too good to be using the launcher file, follow the "usage", or read the HELP which was displayed every time they did something wrong and they were making a mess of the whole thing, running scripts with arguments in the wrong order and complaining that the scripts didn't work properly. Being the choleric I am I decided to overhaul all my scripts to make sure that they are colleague-proof. The code segment above was the first thing.

Csv is over to this boundary, like ordinary text file. So you will be care of the transfer between two formats.

Best way to check if a URL is valid

Using filter_var() will fail for urls with non-ascii chars, e.g. (http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guimarães). The following function encode all non-ascii chars (e.g. http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guimar%C3%A3es) before calling filter_var().

If targetSdkVersion is higher than 24, then FileProvider is used to grant access.

Create an xml file(Path: res\xml) provider_paths.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<paths xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <external-path name="external_files" path="."/>
</paths>

Add a Provider in AndroidManifest.xml

<provider
    android:name="android.support.v4.content.FileProvider"
    android:authorities="${applicationId}.provider"
    android:exported="false"
    android:grantUriPermissions="true">
    <meta-data
        android:name="android.support.FILE_PROVIDER_PATHS"
        android:resource="@xml/provider_paths"/>
</provider>

and replace

return Uri.fromFile(getOutputMediaFile(type));

To

               return FileProvider.getUriForFile(this,  BuildConfig.APPLICATION_ID + ".provider", getOutputMediaFile(type));

Property getters and setters

Update: Swift 4

In the below class setter and getter is applied to variable sideLength

class Triangle: {
    var sideLength: Double = 0.0

    init(sideLength: Double, name: String) { //initializer method
        self.sideLength = sideLength
        super.init(name: name)
        numberOfSides = 3
    }

    var perimeter: Double {
        get { // getter
            return 3.0 * sideLength
        }
        set(newValue) { //setter
            sideLength = newValue / 4.0
        }
   }

Creating object

var triangle = Triangle(sideLength: 3.9, name: "a triangle")

Getter

print(triangle.perimeter) // invoking getter

Setter

triangle.perimeter = 9.9 // invoking setter

How do I format a number to a dollar amount in PHP

PHP also has money_format().

Here's an example:

echo money_format('$%i', 3.4); // echos '$3.40'

This function actually has tons of options, go to the documentation I linked to to see them.

Note: money_format is undefined in Windows.

UPDATE: Via the PHP manual: https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.money-format.php

WARNING: This function [money_format] has been DEPRECATED as of PHP 7.4.0. Relying on this function is highly discouraged.

Instead, look into NumberFormatter::formatCurrency.

    $number = "123.45";
    $formatter = new NumberFormatter('en_US', NumberFormatter::CURRENCY);
    return $formatter->formatCurrency($number, 'USD');

Using column alias in WHERE clause of MySQL query produces an error

Standard SQL disallows references to column aliases in a WHERE clause. This restriction is imposed because when the WHERE clause is evaluated, the column value may not yet have been determined. For example, the following query is illegal:

SELECT id, COUNT(*) AS cnt FROM tbl_name WHERE cnt > 0 GROUP BY id;

How to write the code for the back button?

Basically my code sends data to the next page like so:

**Referring Page**

**Page with button**
$prev = $_GET['prev'];
echo "<a href='$prev'><button id='back'>Back</button></a>";

Pattern! The group names a (sub)pattern for later use in the regex. See the documentation here for details about how such groups are used.

Is it possible to break a long line to multiple lines in Python?

If you want to assign a long str to variable, you can do it as below:

net_weights_pathname = (
    '/home/acgtyrant/BigDatas/'
    'model_configs/lenet_iter_10000.caffemodel')

Do not add any comma, or you will get a tuple which contains many strs!

How to write a shell script that runs some commands as superuser and some commands not as superuser, without having to babysit it?

Well, you have some options.

You could configure sudo to not prompt for a password. This is not recommended, due to the security risks.

You could write an expect script to read the password and supply it to sudo when required, but that's clunky and fragile.

I would recommend designing the script to run as root and drop its privileges whenever they're not needed. Simply have it sudo -u someotheruser command for the commands that don't require root.

(If they have to run specifically as the user invoking the script, then you could have the script save the uid and invoke a second script via sudo with the id as an argument, so it knows who to su to..)

What is the function __construct used for?

I believe that function __construct () {...} is a piece of code that can be reused again and again in substitution for TheActualFunctionName () {...}. If you change the CLASS Name you do not have to change within the code because the generic __construct refers always to the actual class name...whatever it is. You code less...or?

Error: No module named psycopg2.extensions

I had such problem when trying to run python script as a sudo, while psycopg2 was installed via pip3 to my own user's directory.

I managed to resolve the issue for myself removing pip3 version, and just installing it via apt:

pip3 uninstall psycopg2
sudo apt install python3-psycopg2

Add newly created specific folder to .gitignore in Git

For this there are two cases

Case 1: File already added to git repo.

Case 2: File newly created and its status still showing as untracked file when using

git status

If you have case 1:

STEP 1: Then run

git rm --cached filename

to remove it from git repo cache

if it is a directory then use

git rm -r --cached  directory_name

STEP 2: If Case 1 is over then create new file named .gitignore in your git repo

STEP 3: Use following to tell git to ignore / assume file is unchanged

git update-index --assume-unchanged path/to/file.txt

STEP 4: Now, check status using git status open .gitignore in your editor nano, vim, geany etc... any one, add the path of the file / folder to ignore. If it is a folder then user folder_name/* to ignore all file.

If you still do not understand read the article git ignore file link.

How often should Oracle database statistics be run?

At my last job we ran statistics once a week. If I remember correctly, we scheduled them on a Thursday night, and on Friday the DBAs were very careful to monitor the longest running queries for anything unexpected. (Friday was picked because it was often just after a code release, and tended to be a fairly low traffic day.) When they saw a bad query they would find a better query plan and save that one so it wouldn't change again unexpectedly. (Oracle has tools to do this for you automatically, you tell it the query to optimize and it does.)

Many organizations avoid running statistics out of fear of bad query plans popping up unexpectedly. But this usually means that their query plans get worse and worse over time. And when they do run statistics then they encounter a number of problems. The resulting scramble to fix those issues confirms their fears about the dangers of running statistics. But if they ran statistics regularly, used the monitoring tools as they are supposed to, and fixed issues as they came up then they would have fewer headaches, and they wouldn't encounter them all at once.

How to check whether dynamically attached event listener exists or not?

If I understand well you can only check if a listener has been checked but not which listener is presenter specifically.

So some ad hoc code would fill the gap to handle your coding flow. A practical method would be to create a state using variables. For example, attach a listener's checker as following:

var listenerPresent=false

then if you set a listener just change the value:

listenerPresent=true

then inside your eventListener 's callback you can assign specific functionalities inside and in this same way, distribute the access to functionalities depending of some state as variable for example:

accessFirstFunctionality=false
accessSecondFunctionality=true
accessThirdFunctionality=true

NSNotificationCenter addObserver in Swift

In swift 2.2 - XCode 7.3, we use #selector for NSNotificationCenter

 NSNotificationCenter.defaultCenter().addObserver(self, selector: #selector(rotate), name: UIDeviceOrientationDidChangeNotification, object: nil)

implements Closeable or implements AutoCloseable

Closeable extends AutoCloseable, and is specifically dedicated to IO streams: it throws IOException instead of Exception, and is idempotent, whereas AutoCloseable doesn't provide this guarantee.

This is all explained in the javadoc of both interfaces.

Implementing AutoCloseable (or Closeable) allows a class to be used as a resource of the try-with-resources construct introduced in Java 7, which allows closing such resources automatically at the end of a block, without having to add a finally block which closes the resource explicitely.

Your class doesn't represent a closeable resource, and there's absolutely no point in implementing this interface: an IOTest can't be closed. It shouldn't even be possible to instantiate it, since it doesn't have any instance method. Remember that implementing an interface means that there is a is-a relationship between the class and the interface. You have no such relationship here.

Filter multiple values on a string column in dplyr

You need %in% instead of ==:

library(dplyr)
target <- c("Tom", "Lynn")
filter(dat, name %in% target)  # equivalently, dat %>% filter(name %in% target)

Produces

  days name
1   88 Lynn
2   11  Tom
3    1  Tom
4  222 Lynn
5    2 Lynn

To understand why, consider what happens here:

dat$name == target
# [1] FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE TRUE

Basically, we're recycling the two length target vector four times to match the length of dat$name. In other words, we are doing:

 Lynn == Tom
  Tom == Lynn
Chris == Tom
 Lisa == Lynn
 ... continue repeating Tom and Lynn until end of data frame

In this case we don't get an error because I suspect your data frame actually has a different number of rows that don't allow recycling, but the sample you provide does (8 rows). If the sample had had an odd number of rows I would have gotten the same error as you. But even when recycling works, this is clearly not what you want. Basically, the statement dat$name == target is equivalent to saying:

return TRUE for every odd value that is equal to "Tom" or every even value that is equal to "Lynn".

It so happens that the last value in your sample data frame is even and equal to "Lynn", hence the one TRUE above.

To contrast, dat$name %in% target says:

for each value in dat$name, check that it exists in target.

Very different. Here is the result:

[1] TRUE TRUE FALSE FALSE FALSE TRUE TRUE TRUE

Note your problem has nothing to do with dplyr, just the mis-use of ==.

Now, if you use normal textView like:

<TextView
                android:id="@+id/original"
                android:layout_width="wrap_content"
                android:layout_height="wrap_content"

Simply use

<yourpackagename.TextViewEx
                android:id="@+id/changed"
                android:layout_width="wrap_content"
                android:layout_height="wrap_content"
                android:text="@string/lorum_ipsum" />

Define a variable and set justify to be true,

TextViewEx changed = (TextViewEx) findViewById(R.id.changed);
changed.setText(getResources().getString(R.string.lorum_ipsum),true);

Import Android volley to Android Studio

How to use Visual Studio C++ Compiler?

In Visual Studio, you can't just open a .cpp file and expect it to run. You must create a project first, or open the .cpp in some existing project.

In your case, there is no project, so there is no project to build.

Go to File --> New --> Project --> Visual C++ --> Win32 Console Application. You can uncheck "create a directory for solution". On the next page, be sure to check "Empty project".

Then, You can add .cpp files you created outside the Visual Studio by right clicking in the Solution explorer on folder icon "Source" and Add->Existing Item.

Obviously You can create new .cpp this way too (Add --> New). The .cpp file will be created in your project directory.

Then you can press ctrl+F5 to compile without debugging and can see output on console window.

Using Spring RestTemplate in generic method with generic parameter

I feel like there's a much easier way to do this... Just define a class with the type parameters that you want. e.g.:

final class MyClassWrappedByResponse extends ResponseWrapper<MyClass> {
    private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
}

Now change your code above to this and it should work:

public ResponseWrapper<MyClass> makeRequest(URI uri) {
    ResponseEntity<MyClassWrappedByResponse> response = template.exchange(
        uri,
        HttpMethod.POST,
        null,
        MyClassWrappedByResponse.class
    return response;
}

notifyDataSetChanged example

I recently wrote on this topic, though this post it old, I thought it will be helpful to someone who wants to know how to implement BaseAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged() step by step and in a correct way.

Please follow How to correctly implement BaseAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged() in Android or the newer blog BaseAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged().

Commit only part of a file in Git

Much like jdsumsion's answer you can also stash your current work but then use a difftool like meld to pull selected changes from the stash. That way you can even edit the hunks manually very easy, which is a bit of a pain when in git add -p:

$ git stash -u
$ git difftool -d -t meld stash
$ git commit -a -m "some message"
$ git stash pop

Using the stash method gives you the opportunity to test, if your code still works, before you commit it.

How to run a javascript function during a mouseover on a div

Disabling enter key for form

For a non-javascript solution, try putting a <button disabled>Submit</button> into your form, positioned before any other submit buttons/inputs. I suggest immediately after the <form> opening tag (and using CSS to hide it, accesskey='-1' to get it out of the tab sequence, etc)

AFAICT, user agents look for the first submit button when ENTER is hit in an input, and if that button is disabled will then stop looking for another.

A form element's default button is the first submit button in tree order whose form owner is that form element.

If the user agent supports letting the user submit a form implicitly (for example, on some platforms hitting the "enter" key while a text field is focused implicitly submits the form), then doing so for a form whose default button has a defined activation behavior must cause the user agent to run synthetic click activation steps on that default button.

Consequently, if the default button is disabled, the form is not submitted when such an implicit submission mechanism is used. (A button has no activation behavior when disabled.)

https://www.w3.org/TR/html5/forms.html#implicit-submission

However, I do know that Safari 10 MacOS misbehaves here, submitting the form even if the default button is disabled.

So, if you can assume javascript, insert <button onclick="return false;">Submit</button> instead. On ENTER, the onclick handler will get called, and since it returns false the submission process stops. Browsers I've tested this with won't even do the browser-validation thing (focussing the first invalid form control, displaying an error message, etc).

How to select into a variable in PL/SQL when the result might be null?

I know it's an old thread, but I still think it's worth to answer it.

select (
        SELECT COLUMN FROM MY_TABLE WHERE ....
        ) into v_column
from dual;

Example of use:

declare v_column VARCHAR2(100);
begin
  select (SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM ALL_TABLES WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'DOES NOT EXIST')
  into v_column
  from dual;
  DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('v_column=' || v_column);
end;

The best part is that you can choose any file from your computer and it will automatically place all the images of standard sizes into your project directory.

How to change the default collation of a table?

To change the default character set and collation of a table including those of existing columns (note the convert to clause):

alter table <some_table> convert to character set utf8mb4 collate utf8mb4_unicode_ci;

Edited the answer, thanks to the prompting of some comments:

Should avoid recommending utf8. It's almost never what you want, and often leads to unexpected messes. The utf8 character set is not fully compatible with UTF-8. The utf8mb4 character set is what you want if you want UTF-8. – Rich Remer Mar 28 '18 at 23:41

and

That seems quite important, glad I read the comments and thanks @RichRemer . Nikki , I think you should edit that in your answer considering how many views this gets. Is it possible to change a UIButtons background color?

colored UIButton

If you are not wanting to use images, and want it to look exactly like the Rounded Rect style, try this. Just place a UIView over the UIButton, with an identical frame and auto resize mask, set the alpha to 0.3, and set the background to a color. Then use the snippet below to clip the rounded edges off the colored overlay view. Also, uncheck the 'User Interaction Enabled' checkbox in IB on the UIView to allow touch events to cascade down to the UIButton underneath.

One side effect is that your text will also be colorized.

#import <QuartzCore/QuartzCore.h>

colorizeOverlayView.layer.cornerRadius = 10.0f;
colorizeOverlayView.layer.masksToBounds = YES;

How to use android emulator for testing bluetooth application?

Download Androidx86 from this This is an iso file, so you'd
need something like VMWare or VirtualBox to run it When creating the virtual machine, you need to set the type of guest OS as Linux instead of Other.

After creating the virtual machine set the network adapter to 'Bridged'. · Start the VM and select 'Live CD VESA' at boot.

Now you need to find out the IP of this VM. Go to terminal in VM (use Alt+F1 & Alt+F7 to toggle) and use the netcfg command to find this.

Now you need open a command prompt and go to your android install folder (on host). This is usually C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>.

Type adb connect IP_ADDRESS. There done! Now you need to add Bluetooth. Plug in your USB Bluetooth dongle/Bluetooth device.

In VirtualBox screen, go to Devices>USB devices. Select your dongle.

Done! now your Android VM has Bluetooth. Try powering on Bluetooth and discovering/paring with other devices.

Now all that remains is to go to Eclipse and run your program. The Android AVD manager should show the VM as a device on the list.

Alternatively, Under settings of the virtual machine, Goto serialports -> Port 1 check Enable serial port select a port number then select port mode as disconnected click ok. now, start virtual machine. Under Devices -> USB Devices -> you can find your laptop bluetooth listed. You can simply check the option and start testing the android bluetooth application .

How to add elements of a string array to a string array list?

In Java 8, the syntax for this simplifies greatly and can be used to accomplish this transformation succinctly.

Do note, you will need to change your field from a concrete implementation to the List interface for this to work smoothly.

public class Wetland {
    private String name;
    private List<String> species;
    public Wetland(String name, String[] speciesArr) {
        this.name = name;
        species = Arrays.stream(speciesArr)
                        .collect(Collectors.toList());
    }
}

Pandas sum by groupby, but exclude certain columns

If you are looking for a more generalized way to apply to many columns, what you can do is to build a list of column names and pass it as the index of the grouped dataframe. In your case, for example:

columns = ['Y'+str(i) for year in range(1967, 2011)]

df.groupby('Country')[columns].agg('sum')

Public class is inaccessible due to its protection level

You could go into the designer of the web form and change the "webcontrols" to be "public" instead of "protected" but I'm not sure how safe that is. I prefer to make hidden inputs and have some jQuery set the values into those hidden inputs, then create public properties in the web form's class (code behind), and access the values that way.

How to read file binary in C#?

Well, reading it isn't hard, just use FileStream to read a byte[]. Converting it to text isn't really generally possible or meaningful unless you convert the 1's and 0's to hex. That's easy to do with the BitConverter.ToString(byte[]) overload. You'd generally want to dump 16 or 32 bytes in each line. You could use Encoding.ASCII.GetString() to try to convert the bytes to characters. A sample program that does this:

using System;
using System.IO;
using System.Text;

class Program {
    static void Main(string[] args) {
        // Read the file into <bits>
        var fs = new FileStream(@"c:\temp\test.bin", FileMode.Open);
        var len = (int)fs.Length;
        var bits = new byte[len];
        fs.Read(bits, 0, len);
        // Dump 16 bytes per line
        for (int ix = 0; ix < len; ix += 16) {
            var cnt = Math.Min(16, len - ix);
            var line = new byte[cnt];
            Array.Copy(bits, ix, line, 0, cnt);
            // Write address + hex + ascii
            Console.Write("{0:X6}  ", ix);
            Console.Write(BitConverter.ToString(line));
            Console.Write("  ");
            // Convert non-ascii characters to .
            for (int jx = 0; jx < cnt; ++jx)
                if (line[jx] < 0x20 || line[jx] > 0x7f) line[jx] = (byte)'.';
            Console.WriteLine(Encoding.ASCII.GetString(line));
        }
        Console.ReadLine();
    }
}

Python 3 Building an array of bytes

Here is a solution to getting an array (list) of bytes:

I found that you needed to convert the Int to a byte first, before passing it to the bytes():

bytes(int('0xA2', 16).to_bytes(1, "big"))

Then create a list from the bytes:

list(frame)

So your code should look like:

frame = b""
frame += bytes(int('0xA2', 16).to_bytes(1, "big"))
frame += bytes(int('0x01', 16).to_bytes(1, "big"))
frame += bytes(int('0x02', 16).to_bytes(1, "big"))
frame += bytes(int('0x03', 16).to_bytes(1, "big"))
frame += bytes(int('0x04', 16).to_bytes(1, "big"))
bytesList = list(frame)

The question was for an array (list) of bytes. You accepted an answer that doesn't tell how to get a list so I'm not sure if this is actually what you needed.

How to Load RSA Private Key From File

Two things. First, you must base64 decode the mykey.pem file yourself. Second, the openssl private key format is specified in PKCS#1 as the RSAPrivateKey ASN.1 structure. It is not compatible with java's PKCS8EncodedKeySpec, which is based on the SubjectPublicKeyInfo ASN.1 structure. If you are willing to use the bouncycastle library you can use a few classes in the bouncycastle provider and bouncycastle PKIX libraries to make quick work of this.

import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.FileReader;
import java.security.KeyPair;
import java.security.Security;

import org.bouncycastle.jce.provider.BouncyCastleProvider;
import org.bouncycastle.openssl.PEMKeyPair;
import org.bouncycastle.openssl.PEMParser;
import org.bouncycastle.openssl.jcajce.JcaPEMKeyConverter;

// ...

String keyPath = "mykey.pem";
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(keyPath));
Security.addProvider(new BouncyCastleProvider());
PEMParser pp = new PEMParser(br);
PEMKeyPair pemKeyPair = (PEMKeyPair) pp.readObject();
KeyPair kp = new JcaPEMKeyConverter().getKeyPair(pemKeyPair);
pp.close();
samlResponse.sign(Signature.getInstance("SHA1withRSA").toString(), kp.getPrivate(), certs);

About catching ANY exception

To catch all possible exceptions, catch BaseException. It's on top of the Exception hierarchy:

Python 3: https://docs.python.org/3.9/library/exceptions.html#exception-hierarchy

Python 2.7: https://docs.python.org/2.7/library/exceptions.html#exception-hierarchy

try:
    something()
except BaseException as error:
    print('An exception occurred: {}'.format(error))

But as other people mentioned, you would usually not need this, only for specific cases.

Google maps Places API V3 autocomplete - select first option on enter

Here is a solution that does not make a geocoding request that may return an incorrect result: http://jsfiddle.net/amirnissim/2D6HW/

It simulates a down-arrow keypress whenever the user hits return inside the autocomplete field. The ? event is triggered before the return event so it simulates the user selecting the first suggestion using the keyboard.

Here is the code (tested on Chrome and Firefox) :

<script src='https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.2/jquery.min.js'></script>
<script src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?sensor=false&libraries=places"></script>
<script>
    var pac_input = document.getElementById('searchTextField');

    (function pacSelectFirst(input) {
        // store the original event binding function
        var _addEventListener = (input.addEventListener) ? input.addEventListener : input.attachEvent;

        function addEventListenerWrapper(type, listener) {
            // Simulate a 'down arrow' keypress on hitting 'return' when no pac suggestion is selected,
            // and then trigger the original listener.
            if (type == "keydown") {
                var orig_listener = listener;
                listener = function(event) {
                    var suggestion_selected = $(".pac-item-selected").length > 0;
                    if (event.which == 13 && !suggestion_selected) {
                        var simulated_downarrow = $.Event("keydown", {
                            keyCode: 40,
                            which: 40
                        });
                        orig_listener.apply(input, [simulated_downarrow]);
                    }

                    orig_listener.apply(input, [event]);
                };
            }

            _addEventListener.apply(input, [type, listener]);
        }

        input.addEventListener = addEventListenerWrapper;
        input.attachEvent = addEventListenerWrapper;

        var autocomplete = new google.maps.places.Autocomplete(input);

    })(pac_input);
</script>

Inline <style> tags vs. inline css properties

I agree with the majority view that external stylesheets are the prefered method.

However, here are some practical exceptions:

  • Dynamic background images. CSS stylesheets are static files so you need to use an inline style to add a dynamic (from a database, CMS etc...) background-image style.

  • If an element needs to be hidden when the page loads, using an external stylesheet for this is not practical, since there will always be some delay before the stylesheet is processed and the element will be visible until that happens. style="display: none;" is the best way to achieve this.

  • If an application is going to give the user fine control over a particular CSS value, e.g. text color, then it may be necessary to add this to inline style elements or in-page <style></style> blocks. E.g. style="color:#{{ page.color }}", or <style> p.themed { color: #{{ page.color }}; }</style>

What does the "On Error Resume Next" statement do?

It enables error handling. The following is partly from https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/5hsw66as.aspx

' Enable error handling. When a run-time error occurs, control goes to the statement
' immediately following the statement where the error occurred, and execution
' continues from that point.
On Error Resume Next

SomeCodeHere

If Err.Number = 0 Then
    WScript.Echo "No Error in SomeCodeHere."
Else
  WScript.Echo "Error in SomeCodeHere: " & Err.Number & ", " & Err.Source & ", " & Err.Description
  ' Clear the error or you'll see it again when you test Err.Number
  Err.Clear
End If

SomeMoreCodeHere

If Err.Number <> 0 Then
  WScript.Echo "Error in SomeMoreCodeHere:" & Err.Number & ", " & Err.Source & ", " & Err.Description
  ' Clear the error or you'll see it again when you test Err.Number
  Err.Clear
End If

' Disables enabled error handler in the current procedure and resets it to Nothing.
On Error Goto 0

' There are also `On Error Goto -1`, which disables the enabled exception in the current
' procedure and resets it to Nothing, and `On Error Goto line`,
' which enables the error-handling routine that starts at the line specified in the
' required line argument. The line argument is any line label or line number. If a run-time
' error occurs, control branches to the specified line, making the error handler active.
' The specified line must be in the same procedure as the On Error statement,
' or a compile-time error will occur.

How to fix an UnsatisfiedLinkError (Can't find dependent libraries) in a JNI project

I found a great article by some friends at keepsafe that went through the same thing I did. It worked for me, so hopefully it helps you out as well! Have a read if you're interested (The Perils of Loading Native Libraries on Android) or just use

compile 'com.getkeepsafe.relinker:relinker:1.2.3'

and replace

System.loadLibrary("myLibrary");

with

ReLinker.loadLibrary(context, "mylibrary");

LEFT JOIN only first row

I've used something else (I think better...) and want to share it:

I created a VIEW that has a "group" clause

CREATE VIEW vCountries AS SELECT * PROVINCES GROUP BY country_code

SELECT * FROM client INNER JOIN vCountries on client_province = province_id

I want to say yet, that I think that we need to do this solution BECAUSE WE DID SOMETHING WRONG IN THE ANALYSIS... at least in my case... but sometimes it's cheaper to do this that to redesign everything...

I hope it helps!

How to import a module given the full path?

For Python 3.5+ use:

import importlib.util
spec = importlib.util.spec_from_file_location("module.name", "/path/to/file.py")
foo = importlib.util.module_from_spec(spec)
spec.loader.exec_module(foo)
foo.MyClass()

For Python 3.3 and 3.4 use:

from importlib.machinery import SourceFileLoader

foo = SourceFileLoader("module.name", "/path/to/file.py").load_module()
foo.MyClass()

(Although this has been deprecated in Python 3.4.)

For Python 2 use:

import imp

foo = imp.load_source('module.name', '/path/to/file.py')
foo.MyClass()

There are equivalent convenience functions for compiled Python files and DLLs.

SQL Server using wildcard within IN

You have the answer right there in your question. You cannot directly pass wildcard when using IN. However, you can use a sub-query.

Try this:

select *
from jobdetails
where job_no in (
select job_no
from jobdetails
where job_no like '0711%' or job_no like '0712%')
)

I know that this looks crazy, as you can just stick to using OR in your WHERE clause. why the subquery? How ever, the subquery approach will be useful when you have to match details from a different source.

What is the newline character in the C language: \r or \n?

It's \n. When you're reading or writing text mode files, or to stdin/stdout etc, you must use \n, and C will handle the translation for you. When you're dealing with binary files, by definition you are on your own.

Vertically align text to top within a UILabel

I wanted to have a label which was able to have multi-lines, a minimum font size, and centred both horizontally and vertically in it's parent view. I added my label programmatically to my view:

- (void) customInit {
    // Setup label
    self.label = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, self.frame.size.width, self.frame.size.height)];
    self.label.numberOfLines = 0;
    self.label.lineBreakMode = UILineBreakModeWordWrap;
    self.label.textAlignment = UITextAlignmentCenter;

    // Add the label as a subview
    self.autoresizesSubviews = YES;
    [self addSubview:self.label];
}

And then when I wanted to change the text of my label...

- (void) updateDisplay:(NSString *)text {
    if (![text isEqualToString:self.label.text]) {
        // Calculate the font size to use (save to label's font)
        CGSize textConstrainedSize = CGSizeMake(self.frame.size.width, INT_MAX);
        self.label.font = [UIFont systemFontOfSize:TICKER_FONT_SIZE];
        CGSize textSize = [text sizeWithFont:self.label.font constrainedToSize:textConstrainedSize];
        while (textSize.height > self.frame.size.height && self.label.font.pointSize > TICKER_MINIMUM_FONT_SIZE) {
            self.label.font = [UIFont systemFontOfSize:self.label.font.pointSize-1];
            textSize = [ticker.blurb sizeWithFont:self.label.font constrainedToSize:textConstrainedSize];
        }
        // In cases where the frame is still too large (when we're exceeding minimum font size),
        // use the views size
        if (textSize.height > self.frame.size.height) {
            textSize = [text sizeWithFont:self.label.font constrainedToSize:self.frame.size];
        }

        // Draw
        self.label.frame = CGRectMake(0, self.frame.size.height/2 - textSize.height/2, self.frame.size.width, textSize.height);
        self.label.text = text;
    }
    [self setNeedsDisplay];

python convert list to dictionary

Using the usual grouper recipe, you could do:

Python 2:

d = dict(itertools.izip_longest(*[iter(l)] * 2, fillvalue=""))

Python 3:

d = dict(itertools.zip_longest(*[iter(l)] * 2, fillvalue=""))

Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint. Cannot insert duplicate key in object

Pretty sure pk_OrderID is the PK of AC_Shipping_Addresses

And you are trying to insert a duplicate via the _Order.OrderNumber

Do a

select * from AC_Shipping_Addresses where pk_OrderID = 165863;

or select count(*) ....

Pretty sure you will get a row returned.

What it is telling you is you are already using pk_OrderID = 165863 and cannot have another row with that value.

if you want to not insert if there is a row

insert into table (pk, value)
select 11 as pk, 'val' as value
where not exists (select 1 from table where pk = 11)

How to remove all duplicate items from a list

The modern way to do it that maintains the order is:

>>> from collections import OrderedDict
>>> list(OrderedDict.fromkeys(lseparatedOrbList))

as discussed by Raymond Hettinger (python core dev) in this answer. In python 3.5 and above this is also the fastest way - see the linked answer for details. However the keys must be hashable (as is the case in your list I think)

batch file - counting number of files in folder and storing in a variable

The mugume david answer fails on an empty folder; Count is 1 instead of a 0 when looking for a pattern rather than all files. For example *.xml

This works for me:

Truncating a table in a stored procedure

You should know that it is not possible to directly run a DDL statement like you do for DML from a PL/SQL block because PL/SQL does not support late binding directly it only support compile time binding which is fine for DML. hence to overcome this type of problem oracle has provided a dynamic SQL approach which can be used to execute the DDL statements.The dynamic sql approach is about parsing and binding of sql string at the runtime. Also you should rememder that DDL statements are by default auto commit hence you should be careful about any of the DDL statement using the dynamic SQL approach incase if you have some DML (which needs to be commited explicitly using TCL) before executing the DDL in the stored proc/function.

You can use any of the following dynamic sql approach to execute a DDL statement from a pl/sql block.

1) Execute immediate

2) DBMS_SQL package

3) DBMS_UTILITY.EXEC_DDL_STATEMENT (parse_string IN VARCHAR2);

Hope this answers your question with explanation.

How can I return NULL from a generic method in C#?

Two options:

  • Return default(T) which means you'll return null if T is a reference type (or a nullable value type), 0 for int, '\0' for char, etc. (Default values table (C# Reference))
  • Restrict T to be a reference type with the where T : class constraint and then return null as normal

TypeScript and field initializers

You could have a class with optional fields (marked with ?) and a constructor that receives an instance of the same class.

class Person {
    name: string;     // required
    address?: string; // optional
    age?: number;     // optional

    constructor(person: Person) {
        Object.assign(this, person);
    }
}

let persons = [
    new Person({ name: "John" }),
    new Person({ address: "Earth" }),
    new Person({ age: 20, address: "Earth", name: "John" }),
];

In this case, you will not be able to omit the required fields. This gives you fine-grained control over the object construction.

You could use the constructor with the Partial type as noted in other answers:

public constructor(init?:Partial<Person>) {
    Object.assign(this, init);
}

The problem is that all fields become optional and it is not desirable in most cases.

}

sklearn error ValueError: Input contains NaN, infinity or a value too large for dtype('float64')

With this version of python 3:

/opt/anaconda3/bin/python --version
Python 3.6.0 :: Anaconda 4.3.0 (64-bit)

Looking at the details of the error, I found the lines of codes causing the failure:

/opt/anaconda3/lib/python3.6/site-packages/sklearn/utils/validation.py in _assert_all_finite(X)
     56             and not np.isfinite(X).all()):
     57 raise ValueError("Input contains NaN, infinity"
---> 58                          " or a value too large for %r." % X.dtype)
     59
     60

ValueError: Input contains NaN, infinity or a value too large for dtype('float64').

From this, I was able to extract the correct way to test what was going on with my data using the same test which fails given by the error message: np.isfinite(X)

Then with a quick and dirty loop, I was able to find that my data indeed contains nans:

print(p[:,0].shape)
index = 0
for i in p[:,0]:
    if not np.isfinite(i):
        print(index, i)
    index +=1

Now all I have to do is remove the values at these indexes.

How to verify Facebook access token?

Exchange Access Token for Mobile Number and Country Code (Server Side OR Client Side)

You can get the mobile number with your access_token with this API https://graph.accountkit.com/v1.1/me/?access_token=xxxxxxxxxxxx. Maybe, once you have the mobile number and the id, you can work with it to verify the user with your server & database.

xxxxxxxxxx above is the Access Token

Example Response :

{
   "id": "61940819992708",
   "phone": {
      "number": "+91XX82923912",
      "country_prefix": "91",
      "national_number": "XX82923912"
   }
}

Exchange Auth Code for Access Token (Server Side)

If you have an Auth Code instead, you can first get the Access Token with this API - https://graph.accountkit.com/v1.1/access_token?grant_type=authorization_code&code=xxxxxxxxxx&access_token=AA|yyyyyyyyyy|zzzzzzzzzz

xxxxxxxxxx, yyyyyyyyyy and zzzzzzzzzz above are the Auth Code, App ID and App Secret respectively.

Example Response

{
   "id": "619XX819992708",
   "access_token": "EMAWdcsi711meGS2qQpNk4XBTwUBIDtqYAKoZBbBZAEZCZAXyWVbqvKUyKgDZBniZBFwKVyoVGHXnquCcikBqc9ROF2qAxLRrqBYAvXknwND3dhHU0iLZCRwBNHNlyQZD",
   "token_refresh_interval_sec": XX92000
}

Note - This is preferred on the server-side since the API requires the APP Secret which is not meant to be shared for security reasons.

Good Luck.

What is the difference between signed and unsigned int

As you are probably aware, ints are stored internally in binary. Typically an int contains 32 bits, but in some environments might contain 16 or 64 bits (or even a different number, usually but not necessarily a power of two).

But for this example, let's look at 4-bit integers. Tiny, but useful for illustration purposes.

Since there are four bits in such an integer, it can assume one of 16 values; 16 is two to the fourth power, or 2 times 2 times 2 times 2. What are those values? The answer depends on whether this integer is a signed int or an unsigned int. With an unsigned int, the value is never negative; there is no sign associated with the value. Here are the 16 possible values of a four-bit unsigned int:

bits  value
0000    0
0001    1
0010    2
0011    3
0100    4
0101    5
0110    6
0111    7
1000    8
1001    9
1010   10
1011   11
1100   12
1101   13
1110   14
1111   15

... and Here are the 16 possible values of a four-bit signed int:

bits  value
0000    0
0001    1
0010    2
0011    3
0100    4
0101    5
0110    6
0111    7
1000   -8
1001   -7
1010   -6
1011   -5
1100   -4
1101   -3
1110   -2
1111   -1

As you can see, for signed ints the most significant bit is 1 if and only if the number is negative. That is why, for signed ints, this bit is known as the "sign bit".

Importing a csv into mysql via command line

Try this command

 load data local infile 'file.csv' into table table
 fields terminated by ','
 enclosed by '"'
 lines terminated by '\n'
 (column1, column2, column3,...)

The fields here are the actual table fields that the data needs to sit in. The enclosed by and lines terminated by are optional and can help if you have columns enclosed with double-quotes such as Excel exports, etc.

For further details check the manual.

For setting the first row as the table column names, just ignore the row from being read and add the values in the command.

Define global variable with webpack

Use DefinePlugin.

The DefinePlugin allows you to create global constants which can be configured at compile time.

new webpack.DefinePlugin(definitions)

Example:

plugins: [
  new webpack.DefinePlugin({
    PRODUCTION: JSON.stringify(true)
  })
  //...
]

Usage:

console.log(`Environment is in production: ${PRODUCTION}`);

How to continue a Docker container which has exited

These commands will work for any container (not only last exited ones). This way will work even after your system has rebooted. To do so, these commands will use "container id".

Steps:

  1. List all dockers by using this command and note the container id of the container you want to restart: docker ps -a

  2. Start your container using container id: docker start <container_id>

  3. Attach and run your container: docker attach <container_id>

Invoking a PHP script from a MySQL trigger

I was thinking about this exact issue for a case with long polling where I didn't want the php script to have to continually poll the db. Polling would need to be done somewhere, memory would probably be best. So if somehow the trigger could put the info into something like memcache, then php could poll that would would be much less intensive overall. Just need a method for mysql to use memcache. Perhaps into a predefined variable with a specific user id. Once the data is retrieved php could reset the var until the db sets it again. Not sure about timing issues though. Perhaps a second variable to store the previous key selected.

Name does not exist in the current context

I had this problem in my main project when I referenced a dll file.

The problem was that the main project that referenced the dll was targeting a lower framework version than that of the dll.

So I upped my target framework version (Right-click project -> Application -> Target framework) and the error disappeared.

How to sort a List of objects by their date (java collections, List<Object>)

Do not access or modify the collection in the Comparator. The comparator should be used only to determine which object is comes before another. The two objects that are to be compared are supplied as arguments.

Date itself is comparable, so, using generics:

class MovieComparator implements Comparator<Movie> {
    public int compare(Movie m1, Movie m2) {
       //possibly check for nulls to avoid NullPointerException
       return m1.getDate().compareTo(m2.getDate());
    }
}

And do not instantiate the comparator on each sort. Use:

private static final MovieComparator comparator = new MovieComparator();

How to install a specific version of a package with pip?

Accessing variables from other functions without using global variables

To make a variable calculated in function A visible in function B, you have three choices:

  • make it a global,
  • make it an object property, or
  • pass it as a parameter when calling B from A.

If your program is fairly small then globals are not so bad. Otherwise I would consider using the third method:

function A()
{
    var rand_num = calculate_random_number();
    B(rand_num);
}

function B(r)
{
    use_rand_num(r);
}

Calling startActivity() from outside of an Activity context

You can achieve it with addFlags instead of setFlags

myIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);

According to the documentation it does:

Add additional flags to the intent (or with existing flags value).

EDIT

Be aware if you are using flags that you change the history stack as Alex Volovoy's answer says:

...avoid setting flags as it will interfere with normal flow of event and history stack.

Encode String to UTF-8

In Java7 you can use:

import static java.nio.charset.StandardCharsets.*;

byte[] ptext = myString.getBytes(ISO_8859_1);
String value = new String(ptext, UTF_8);

This has the advantage over getBytes(String) that it does not declare throws UnsupportedEncodingException.

If you're using an older Java version you can declare the charset constants yourself:

import java.nio.charset.Charset;

public class StandardCharsets {
    public static final Charset ISO_8859_1 = Charset.forName("ISO-8859-1");
    public static final Charset UTF_8 = Charset.forName("UTF-8");
    //....
}

Passing javascript variable to html textbox

<form name="input" action="some.php" method="post">
 <input type="text" name="user" id="mytext">
 <input type="submit" value="Submit">
</form>

<script>
  var w = someValue;
document.getElementById("mytext").value = w;

</script>

//php on some.php page

echo $_POST['user'];

Browser Caching of CSS files

To the first part of your question - yes, browsers cache css files (if this is not disabled by browser's configuration). Many browsers have key combination to reload a page without a cache. If you made changes to css and want users to see them immediately instead of waiting next time when browser reloads the files without caching, you can change the way CSS ir served by adding some parameters to the url like this:

/style.css?modified=20012009

jquery clone div and append it after specific div

This works great if a straight copy is in order. If the situation calls for creating new objects from templates, I usually wrap the template div in a hidden storage div and use jquery's html() in conjunction with clone() applying the following technique:

<style>
#element-storage {
    display: none;
    top: 0;
    right: 0;
    position: fixed;
    width: 0;
    height: 0;
}
</style>

<script>
$("#new-div").append($("#template").clone().html(function(index, oldHTML){
    // .. code to modify template, e.g. below:
    var newHTML = "";
    newHTML = oldHTML.replace("[firstname]", "Tom");
    newHTML = newHTML.replace("[lastname]", "Smith");
    // newHTML = newHTML.replace(/[Example Replace String]/g, "Replacement"); // regex for global replace
    return newHTML;
}));
</script>

<div id="element-storage">
  <div id="template">
    <p>Hello [firstname] [lastname]</p>
  </div>
</div>

<div id="new-div">

</div>

Notepad++ Multi editing

Notepad++ has a powerful regex engine, capable to search and replace patterns at will.

In your scenario:

  1. Click the menu item Search\Replace...

  2. Fill the 'Find what' field with the search pattern:

    ^(\d{4})\s+(\w{3})\s+(\w{3})$

  3. Fill the replace pattern:

    Insert into tbl (\1, \2) where clm = \3

  4. Click the Replace All button.

And that's it.

MVC 3: How to render a view without its layout page when loaded via ajax?

I prefer, and use, your #1 option. I don't like #2 because to me View() implies you are returning an entire page. It should be a fully fleshed out and valid HTML page once the view engine is done with it. PartialView() was created to return arbitrary chunks of HTML.

I don't think it's a big deal to have a view that just calls a partial. It's still DRY, and allows you to use the logic of the partial in two scenarios.

Many people dislike fragmenting their action's call paths with Request.IsAjaxRequest(), and I can appreciate that. But IMO, if all you are doing is deciding whether to call View() or PartialView() then the branch is not a big deal and is easy to maintain (and test). If you find yourself using IsAjaxRequest() to determine large portions of how your action plays out, then making a separate AJAX action is probably better.

When to use Spring Security`s antMatcher()?

You need antMatcher for multiple HttpSecurity, see Spring Security Reference:

5.7 Multiple HttpSecurity

We can configure multiple HttpSecurity instances just as we can have multiple <http> blocks. The key is to extend the WebSecurityConfigurationAdapter multiple times. For example, the following is an example of having a different configuration for URL’s that start with /api/.

@EnableWebSecurity
public class MultiHttpSecurityConfig {
  @Autowired
  public void configureGlobal(AuthenticationManagerBuilder auth) { 1
      auth
          .inMemoryAuthentication()
              .withUser("user").password("password").roles("USER").and()
              .withUser("admin").password("password").roles("USER", "ADMIN");
  }

  @Configuration
  @Order(1)                                                        2
  public static class ApiWebSecurityConfigurationAdapter extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {
      protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
          http
              .antMatcher("/api/**")                               3
              .authorizeRequests()
                  .anyRequest().hasRole("ADMIN")
                  .and()
              .httpBasic();
      }
  }

  @Configuration                                                   4
  public static class FormLoginWebSecurityConfigurerAdapter extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {

      @Override
      protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
          http
              .authorizeRequests()
                  .anyRequest().authenticated()
                  .and()
              .formLogin();
      }
  }
}

1 Configure Authentication as normal

2 Create an instance of WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter that contains @Order to specify which WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter should be considered first.

3 The http.antMatcher states that this HttpSecurity will only be applicable to URLs that start with /api/

4 Create another instance of WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter. If the URL does not start with /api/ this configuration will be used. This configuration is considered after ApiWebSecurityConfigurationAdapter since it has an @Order value after 1 (no @Order defaults to last).

In your case you need no antMatcher, because you have only one configuration. Your modified code:

http
    .authorizeRequests()
        .antMatchers("/high_level_url_A/sub_level_1").hasRole('USER')
        .antMatchers("/high_level_url_A/sub_level_2").hasRole('USER2')
        .somethingElse() // for /high_level_url_A/**
        .antMatchers("/high_level_url_A/**").authenticated()
        .antMatchers("/high_level_url_B/sub_level_1").permitAll()
        .antMatchers("/high_level_url_B/sub_level_2").hasRole('USER3')
        .somethingElse() // for /high_level_url_B/**
        .antMatchers("/high_level_url_B/**").authenticated()
        .anyRequest().permitAll()

org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Premature end of file for *VALID* XML

This exception only happens if you are parsing an empty String/empty byte array.

below is a snippet on how to reproduce it:

String xml = ""; // <-- deliberately an empty string.
ByteArrayInputStream xmlStream = new java.io.ByteArrayInputStream(xml.getBytes());
Unmarshaller u = JAXBContext.newInstance(...)
u.setSchema(...);
u.unmarshal( xmlStream ); // <-- here it will fail

Should I use scipy.pi, numpy.pi, or math.pi?

>>> import math
>>> import numpy as np
>>> import scipy
>>> math.pi == np.pi == scipy.pi
True

So it doesn't matter, they are all the same value.

The only reason all three modules provide a pi value is so if you are using just one of the three modules, you can conveniently have access to pi without having to import another module. They're not providing different values for pi.

Manipulating an Access database from Java without ODBC

UCanAccess is a pure Java JDBC driver that allows us to read from and write to Access databases without using ODBC. It uses two other packages, Jackcess and HSQLDB, to perform these tasks. The following is a brief overview of how to get it set up.

Option 1: Using Maven

If your project uses Maven you can simply include UCanAccess via the following coordinates:

groupId: net.sf.ucanaccess
artifactId: ucanaccess

The following is an excerpt from pom.xml, you may need to update the <version> to get the most recent release:

  <dependencies>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>net.sf.ucanaccess</groupId>
        <artifactId>ucanaccess</artifactId>
        <version>4.0.4</version>
    </dependency>
  </dependencies>

Option 2: Manually adding the JARs to your project

As mentioned above, UCanAccess requires Jackcess and HSQLDB. Jackcess in turn has its own dependencies. So to use UCanAccess you will need to include the following components:

UCanAccess (ucanaccess-x.x.x.jar)
HSQLDB (hsqldb.jar, version 2.2.5 or newer)
Jackcess (jackcess-2.x.x.jar)
commons-lang (commons-lang-2.6.jar, or newer 2.x version)
commons-logging (commons-logging-1.1.1.jar, or newer 1.x version)

Fortunately, UCanAccess includes all of the required JAR files in its distribution file. When you unzip it you will see something like

ucanaccess-4.0.1.jar
  /lib/
    commons-lang-2.6.jar
    commons-logging-1.1.1.jar
    hsqldb.jar
    jackcess-2.1.6.jar

All you need to do is add all five (5) JARs to your project.

NOTE: Do not add loader/ucanload.jar to your build path if you are adding the other five (5) JAR files. The UcanloadDriver class is only used in special circumstances and requires a different setup. See the related answer here for details.

Eclipse: Right-click the project in Package Explorer and choose Build Path > Configure Build Path.... Click the "Add External JARs..." button to add each of the five (5) JARs. When you are finished your Java Build Path should look something like this

BuildPath.png

NetBeans: Expand the tree view for your project, right-click the "Libraries" folder and choose "Add JAR/Folder...", then browse to the JAR file.

nbAddJar.png

After adding all five (5) JAR files the "Libraries" folder should look something like this:

nbLibraries.png

IntelliJ IDEA: Choose File > Project Structure... from the main menu. In the "Libraries" pane click the "Add" (+) button and add the five (5) JAR files. Once that is done the project should look something like this:

That's it!

Now "U Can Access" data in .accdb and .mdb files using code like this

// assumes...
//     import java.sql.*;
Connection conn=DriverManager.getConnection(
        "jdbc:ucanaccess://C:/__tmp/test/zzz.accdb");
Statement s = conn.createStatement();
ResultSet rs = s.executeQuery("SELECT [LastName] FROM [Clients]");
while (rs.next()) {
    System.out.println(rs.getString(1));
}

Disclosure

At the time of writing this Q&A I had no involvement in or affiliation with the UCanAccess project; I just used it. I have since become a contributor to the project.

Hide/Show Action Bar Option Menu Item for different fragments

Even though the question is old and answered. There is a simpler answer to that than the above mentioned. You don't need to use any other variables. You can create the buttons on action bar whatever the fragment you want, instead of doing the visibility stuff(show/hide).

Add the following in the fragment whatever u need the menu item.

public void onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu, MenuInflater inflater) {
    inflater.inflate(R.menu.menu, menu);
    super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu, inflater);
}

Sample menu.xml file:

<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >
    <item
        android:id="@+id/action_addFlat"
        android:icon="@drawable/add"
        android:showAsAction="ifRoom|withText"
        android:title="@string/action_addFlat"/>
</menu>

Handling onclick events is as usual.

Converting Integer to Long

Integer i = 5; //example

Long l = Long.valueOf(i.longValue());

This avoids the performance hit of converting to a String. The longValue() method in Integer is just a cast of the int value. The Long.valueOf() method gives the vm a chance to use a cached value.
