Originally I had a recursive function here which does not play well with sql server as it has a 32 nesting level limit which would result in an error like the below any time you attempt to make 32+ replacements with the function. Instead of trying to make a server level change to allow more nesting (which could be dangerous like allow never ending loops) switching to a while loop makes a lot more sense.

Maximum stored procedure, function, trigger, or view nesting level exceeded (limit 32).

#pragma once does have one drawback (other than being non-standard) and that is if you have the same file in different locations (we have this because our build system copies files around) then the compiler will think these are different files.

How to multi-line "Replace in files..." in Notepad++

This is a subjective opinion, but I think a text editor shouldn't do everything and the kitchen sink. I prefer lightweight flexible and powerful (in their specialized fields) editors. Although being mostly a Windows user, I like the Unix philosophy of having lot of specialized tools that you can pipe together (like the UnxUtils) rather than a monster doing everything, but not necessarily as you would like it!

Find in files is on the border of these extra features, but useful when you can double-click on a found line to open the file at the right line. Note that initially, in SciTE it was just a Tools call to grep or equivalent!
FTP is very close to off topic, although it can be seen as an extended open/save dialog.
Replace in files is too much IMO: it is dangerous (you can mess lot of files at once) if you have no preview, etc. I would rather use a specialized tool I chose, perhaps among those in Multi line search and replace tool.

To answer the question, looking at N++, I see a Run menu where you can launch any tool, with assignment of a name and shortcut key. I see also Plugins > NppExec, which seems able to launch stuff like sed (not tried it).

Options +FollowSymlinks if not set may give you a forbidden error in the logs like so:

Options FollowSymLinks or SymLinksIfOwnerMatch is off which implies that RewriteRule directive is forbidden

Rewrite base is required otherwise requests will be resolved to your server root which locally by default is not your project directory unless you have specifically configured your vhosts, so you need to set the path so that the request finds your project root directory. For example on my machine I have a /Users/me/Sites directory where I keep all my projects. Like the old OS X set up.

The next two lines effectively say if the path is not a directory or a file, so you need to make sure you have no files or directories the same as your app route paths.

The next condition says if request not ending with file extensions specified so add what you need there

And the [L] last one is saying to serve the index.html file - your app for all other requests.

If you still have problems then check the apache log, it will probably give you useful hints:

Recommended way to save uploaded files in a servlet application

Store it anywhere in an accessible location except of the IDE's project folder aka the server's deploy folder, for reasons mentioned in the answer to Uploaded image only available after refreshing the page:

  1. Changes in the IDE's project folder does not immediately get reflected in the server's work folder. There's kind of a background job in the IDE which takes care that the server's work folder get synced with last updates (this is in IDE terms called "publishing"). This is the main cause of the problem you're seeing.

  2. In real world code there are circumstances where storing uploaded files in the webapp's deploy folder will not work at all. Some servers do (either by default or by configuration) not expand the deployed WAR file into the local disk file system, but instead fully in the memory. You can't create new files in the memory without basically editing the deployed WAR file and redeploying it.

  3. Even when the server expands the deployed WAR file into the local disk file system, all newly created files will get lost on a redeploy or even a simple restart, simply because those new files are not part of the original WAR file.

It really doesn't matter to me or anyone else where exactly on the local disk file system it will be saved, as long as you do not ever use getRealPath() method. Using that method is in any case alarming.

The path to the storage location can in turn be definied in many ways. You have to do it all by yourself. Perhaps this is where your confusion is caused because you somehow expected that the server does that all automagically. Please note that @MultipartConfig(location) does not specify the final upload destination, but the temporary storage location for the case file size exceeds memory storage threshold.

So, the path to the final storage location can be definied in either of the following ways:

  • Hardcoded:

      File uploads = new File("/path/to/uploads");
    
  • Environment variable via SET UPLOAD_LOCATION=/path/to/uploads:

What is the underlying logic you want to implement? If, for instance, you want to test for the existence of a record to determine to insert or update then a better choice would be to use MERGE instead.

If you expect the record to exist most of the time, this is probably the most efficient way of doing things (although the CASE WHEN EXISTS solution is likely to be just as efficient):

You only need the ROWNUM line if SALES_TYPE is not unique. There's no point in doing a count when all you want to know is whether at least one record exists.

When should I use the Visitor Design Pattern?

One way to look at it is that the visitor pattern is a way of letting your clients add additional methods to all of your classes in a particular class hierarchy.

It is useful when you have a fairly stable class hierarchy, but you have changing requirements of what needs to be done with that hierarchy.

The classic example is for compilers and the like. An Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) can accurately define the structure of the programming language, but the operations you might want to do on the AST will change as your project advances: code-generators, pretty-printers, debuggers, complexity metrics analysis.

Without the Visitor Pattern, every time a developer wanted to add a new feature, they would need to add that method to every feature in the base class. This is particularly hard when the base classes appear in a separate library, or are produced by a separate team.

(I have heard it argued that the Visitor pattern is in conflict with good OO practices, because it moves the operations of the data away from the data. The Visitor pattern is useful in precisely the situation that the normal OO practices fail.)

If your grep -i does not work then try using tr command to convert the the output of your file to lower case and then pipe it into standard grep with whatever you are looking for. (it sounds complicated but the actual command which I have provided for you is not !).

Notice the tr command does not change the content of your original file, it just converts it just before it feeds it into grep.

Convenient way to parse incoming multipart/form-data parameters in a Servlet

multipart/form-data encoded requests are indeed not by default supported by the Servlet API prior to version 3.0. The Servlet API parses the parameters by default using application/x-www-form-urlencoded encoding. When using a different encoding, the request.getParameter() calls will all return null. When you're already on Servlet 3.0 (Glassfish 3, Tomcat 7, etc), then you can use HttpServletRequest#getParts() instead. Also see this blog for extended examples.

Prior to Servlet 3.0, a de facto standard to parse multipart/form-data requests would be using Apache Commons FileUpload. Just carefully read its User Guide and Frequently Asked Questions sections to learn how to use it. I've posted an answer with a code example before here (it also contains an example targeting Servlet 3.0).

Java: Instanceof and Generics

Two options for runtime type checking with generics:

Option 1 - Corrupt your constructor

Let's assume you are overriding indexOf(...), and you want to check the type just for performance, to save yourself iterating the entire collection.

Make a filthy constructor like this:

public MyCollection<T>(Class<T> t) {

    this.t = t;
}

Then you can use isAssignableFrom to check the type.

Each time you instantiate your object you would have to repeat yourself:

new MyCollection<Apples>(Apples.class);

You might decide it isn't worth it. In the implementation of ArrayList.indexOf(...), they do not check that the type matches.

Option 2 - Let it fail

If you need to use an abstract method that requires your unknown type, then all you really want is for the compiler to stop crying about instanceof. If you have a method like this:

You can use it like this:

You are casting the object to T (your generic type), just to fool the compiler. Your cast does nothing at runtime, but you will still get a ClassCastException when you try to pass the wrong type of object into your abstract method.

NOTE 1: If you are doing additional unchecked casts in your abstract method, your ClassCastExceptions will get caught here. That could be good or bad, so think it through.

NOTE 2: You get a free null check when you use instanceof. Since you can't use it, you may need to check for null with your bare hands.

Interface vs Base class

An inheritor of a base class should have an "is a" relationship. Interface represents An "implements a" relationship. So only use a base class when your inheritors will maintain the is a relationship.

Error pushing to GitHub - insufficient permission for adding an object to repository database

I was getting this error because every time a user push some content, the group of the file changed to the user. And then if some other user tried to push into the repository, it caused permission error and the push was rejected. So one need to ask your sysadmin to change the settings of the repository so that group of any file in the repository is not changed for any push by any user.

To avoid such problem, please ensure that when you initialize your git repository, use the command "git init --shared=group".

In some cases when forcing jQuery ajax to do non-expected things, the beforeSend event is a great place to do it. For a while people were using beforeSend to override the mimeType before that was added into jQuery in 1.5.1. You should be able to modify just about anything on the jqXHR object in the before send event.

When you say $(document).ready(f), you tell script engine to do the following:

  1. get the object document and push it, since it's not in local scope, it must do a hash table lookup to find where document is, fortunately document is globally bound so it is a single lookup.
  2. find the object $ and select it, since it's not in local scope, it must do a hash table lookup, which may or may not have collisions.
  3. find the object f in global scope, which is another hash table lookup, or push function object and initialize it.
  4. call ready of selected object, which involves another hash table lookup into the selected object to find the method and invoke it.
  5. done.

In the best case, this is 2 hash table lookups, but that's ignoring the heavy work done by jQuery, where $ is the kitchen sink of all possible inputs to jQuery, so another map is likely there to dispatch the query to correct handler.

Alternatively, you could do this:

window.onload = function() {...}

which will

  1. find the object window in global scope, if the JavaScript is optimized, it will know that since window isn't changed, it has already the selected object, so nothing needs to be done.
  2. function object is pushed on the operand stack.
  3. check if onload is a property or not by doing a hash table lookup, since it is, it is called like a function.

In the best case, this costs a single hash table lookup, which is necessary because onload must be fetched.

Ideally, jQuery would compile their queries to strings that can be pasted to do what you wanted jQuery to do but without the runtime dispatching of jQuery. This way you have an option of either

  1. do dynamic dispatch of jquery like we do today.
  2. have jQuery compile your query to pure JavaScript string that can be passed to eval to do what you want.
  3. copy the result of 2 directly into your code, and skip the cost of eval.

I am on a 64 bit system, and I only got this to work after installing both the 32 and 64 bit versions of the redistributable. I did not try the 64 bit version by itself due to the other posters' warnings about using the 32 bit version (and am too lazy to uninstall the 32 bit version now that I have it working), so I don't know if the 32 bit version is needed or not in cases like mine.

Not if you treat it as simply a recommendation. But if your treat it as a hard and fast rule?, yes, it is invalid.

Stylesheet loads block script execution, so if you have a <script> after a <link rel="stylesheet" ...> the page will not finish parsing - and DOMContentLoaded will not fire - until the stylesheet is loaded.

It appears that you need to know what each script relies on and make sure that execution of the script is delayed until after the right completion event. If the script relies only on the DOM, it can resume in ondomready/domcontentloaded, if it relies on images to be loaded or stylesheets to be applied, then if I read the above reference correctly, that code must be deferred until the onload event.

I don't think that one sock size fits all, even though that is the way they are sold and I know that one shoe size does not fit all. I don't think that there is a definitive answer to which to load first, styles or script. It is more a case by case decision of what must be loaded in what order and what can be deferred until later as not being on the "critical path".

To speak to the observer that commented that it is better to delay the users ability to interact until the sheet is pretty. There are many of you out there and you annoy your counterparts that feel the opposite. They came to a site to accomplish a purpose and delays to their ability to interact with a site while waiting for things that don't matter to finish loading are very frustrating. I am not saying that you are wrong, only that you should be aware that there is another faction that exists that does not share your priority.

This question particularly applies to all of the ads being placed on web sites. I would love it if site authors rendered just placeholder divs for the ad content and made sure that their site was loaded and interactive before injecting the ads in an onload event. Even then I would like to see the ads loaded serially instead of all at once because they impact my ability to even scroll the site content while the bloated ads are loading. But that is just one persons point of view.

  • Know your users and what they value.
  • Know your users and what browsing environment they use.
  • Know what each file does, and what its pre-requisites are. Making everything work will take precedence over both speed and pretty.
  • Use tools that show you the network time line when developing.
  • Test in each of the environments that your users use. It may be needed to dynamically (server side, when creating the page) alter the order of loading based on the users environment.
  • When in doubt, alter the order and measure again.
  • It is possible that intermixing styles and scripts in the load order will be optimal; not all of one then all of the other.
  • Experiment not just what order to load the files but where. Head? In Body? After Body? DOM Ready/Loaded? Loaded?
  • Consider async and defer options when appropriate to reduce the net delay the user will experience before being able to interact with the page. Test to determine if they help or hurt.
  • There will always be trade offs to consider when evaluating the optimal load order. Pretty vs. Responsive being just one.

I exported my project as Jar and even though the Manifest was present it gave me the error no main manifest attribute in jar even though the Manifest file was present in the Jar. Try-catch speeding up my code?

Well, the way you're timing things looks pretty nasty to me. It would be much more sensible to just time the whole loop:

That way you're not at the mercy of tiny timings, floating point arithmetic and accumulated error.

Having made that change, see whether the "non-catch" version is still slower than the "catch" version.

EDIT: Okay, I've tried it myself - and I'm seeing the same result. Very odd. I wondered whether the try/catch was disabling some bad inlining, but using [MethodImpl(MethodImplOptions.NoInlining)] instead didn't help...

Basically you'll need to look at the optimized JITted code under cordbg, I suspect...

EDIT: A few more bits of information:

  • Putting the try/catch around just the n++; line still improves performance, but not by as much as putting it around the whole block
  • If you catch a specific exception (ArgumentException in my tests) it's still fast
  • If you print the exception in the catch block it's still fast
  • If you rethrow the exception in the catch block it's slow again
  • If you use a finally block instead of a catch block it's slow again
  • If you use a finally block as well as a catch block, it's fast

Weird...

EDIT: Okay, we have disassembly...

This is using the C# 2 compiler and .NET 2 (32-bit) CLR, disassembling with mdbg (as I don't have cordbg on my machine). I still see the same performance effects, even under the debugger. The fast version uses a try block around everything between the variable declarations and the return statement, with just a catch{} handler. Obviously the slow version is the same except without the try/catch. The calling code (i.e. Main) is the same in both cases, and has the same assembly representation (so it's not an inlining issue).

In each case the * shows where the debugger entered in a simple "step-into".

EDIT: Okay, I've now looked through the code and I think I can see how each version works... and I believe the slower version is slower because it uses fewer registers and more stack space. For small values of n that's possibly faster - but when the loop takes up the bulk of the time, it's slower.

Possibly the try/catch block forces more registers to be saved and restored, so the JIT uses those for the loop as well... which happens to improve the performance overall. It's not clear whether it's a reasonable decision for the JIT to not use as many registers in the "normal" code.

EDIT: Just tried this on my x64 machine. The x64 CLR is much faster (about 3-4 times faster) than the x86 CLR on this code, and under x64 the try/catch block doesn't make a noticeable difference.

You can't easily communicate back to the CPU from within GLSL. Using glslDevil or other tools is your best bet.

A printf would require trying to get back to the CPU from the GPU running the GLSL code. Instead, you can try pushing ahead to the display. Instead of trying to output text, output something visually distinctive to the screen. For example you can paint something a specific color only if you reach the point of your code where you want add a printf. If you need to printf a value you can set the color according to that value.

Depending on your version of Tomcat, this might be a simple problem (bug) with a 0-byte log file. Take a look at /var/log/tomcatX.Y where X.Y is your version you're working with and check if the log file catalina.out is read- and writeable. If it has 0 byte and is not accessible, then simply delete it and re-start Tomcat. This solved the problem for us a few times already.

Surprisingly (well, at least for me) the native way using list comprehension is the fastest and about 10x faster than the numpy-way. Running the two numpy-ways without the final list saves about one µs which is still in the 10x difference.

Note that, when I surrounded each code snippet with a call to len, to ensure that Generators run till the end, the timing stayed the same.

You could deal with a json array and the sort function. It is a pretty easy maintanable structure to manipulate (ex: sorting).

Untested, but here's the idea. That would support multiple ordering and sequential ordering if you pass in a array in which you put the columns in the order they should be ordered by.

I would not recommend you to start session just to get some unique id. Instead, use such things as uniqid() because it's intended to return unique id.

However, if you already have session, then, of course, use session_id() to get your session id - but do not rely on that, because "unique id" isn't same as "session id" in common sense: for example, multiple tabs in most browsers will use same process, thus, use same session identifier in result - and, therefore, different connections will have same id. It's your decision about desired behavior, I've mentioned this just to show the difference between session id and unique id.

The behavior depends on which version your repository has. Subversion 1.5 allows 4 types of merge:

  3. merge [-c M[,N...] | -r N:M ...] SOURCE[@REV] [WCPATH]

Subversion before 1.5 only allowed the first 2 formats.

Technically you can perform all merges with the first two methods, but the last two enable subversion 1.5's merge tracking.

TortoiseSVN's options merge a range or revisions maps to method 3 when your repository is 1.5+ or to method one when your repository is older.

When merging features over to a release/maintenance branch you should use the 'Merge a range of revisions' command.

Only when you want to merge all features of a branch back to a parent branch (commonly trunk) you should look into using 'Reintegrate a branch'.

And the last command -Merge two different trees- is only usefull when you want to step outside the normal branching behavior. (E.g. Comparing different releases and then merging the differenct to yet another branch)

You can't do it with the layout alone, I've tried. I ended up writing a very simple class to handle it, you can check it out on github. SquareImage.java Its part of a larger project but nothing a little copy and paste can't fix (licensed under Apache 2.0)

Essentially you just need to set the height/width equal to the other dimension (depending on which way you want to scale it)

Note: You can make it square without a custom class using the scaleType attribute but the view's bounds extend beyond the visible image, which makes it an issue if you are placing other views near it.

The problem, as the Traceback says, comes from the line x[i+1] = x[i] + ( t[i+1] - t[i] ) * f( x[i], t[i] ). Let's replace it in its context:

  • x is an array equal to [x0 * n], so its length is 1
  • you're iterating from 0 to n-2 (n doesn't matter here), and i is the index. In the beginning, everything is ok (here there's no beginning apparently... :( ), but as soon as i + 1 >= len(x) <=> i >= 0, the element x[i+1] doesn't exist. Here, this element doesn't exist since the beginning of the for loop.

To solve this, you must replace x[i+1] = x[i] + ( t[i+1] - t[i] ) * f( x[i], t[i] ) by x.append(x[i] + ( t[i+1] - t[i] ) * f( x[i], t[i] )).

You can use nslookup on the IP. Reverse DNS is defined with the .in-addr.arpa domain.

Single quotes in words can't and don't broke the string. In case string have only one inside quote e.g. 'he don't want' oracle throws more relevant quoted string not properly terminated error, but in case of two SQL command not properly ended is thrown.

Headers can be Toolbars, LinearLayouts, RelativeLayouts, or whatever type of view you use to create a header.

The scrollable area can be any type of scroll content including ListView, ScrollView, WebView, RecyclerView, RelativeLayout, LinearLayout or whatever you want.

There's even support for nested headers.

It is indeed a complex undertaking to synchronize headers (toolbars) and scrollable content the way it's done in Google Newsstand.

This library doesn't require implementing any kind of onScrollListener.

The solutions listed above by others are only half baked solutions that don't take into consideration that the top edge of the scrollable content area beneath the toolbar has to initially be aligned to the bottom edge of the toolbar and then during scrolling the content area needs to be repositioned and possibly resized. The JBHeaderScroll handles all these issues.

So the recommended solution is to write a a server side script to parse the Accept-Language header & pass it to client for setting the language of the website. It's weird that why the server would be needed to detect the language preference of client but that's how it is as of now There are other various hacks available to detect the language but reading the Accept-Language header is the recommended solution as per my understanding.

Quickly create a large file on a Linux system

The GPL mkfile is just a (ba)sh script wrapper around dd; BSD's mkfile just memsets a buffer with non-zero and writes it repeatedly. I would not expect the former to out-perform dd. The latter might edge out dd if=/dev/zero slightly since it omits the reads, but anything that does significantly better is probably just creating a sparse file.

Absent a system call that actually allocates space for a file without writing data (and Linux and BSD lack this, probably Solaris as well) you might get a small improvement in performance by using ftrunc(2)/truncate(1) to extend the file to the desired size, mmap the file into memory, then write non-zero data to the first bytes of every disk block (use fgetconf to find the disk block size).

As said in recent comments, string::localeCompare supports case insensitive comparisons (among other powerful things).

Here's a simple example

PKIX path building failed: unable to find valid certification path to requested target

Java 8 Solution: I just had this problem and solved it by adding the remote site's certificate to my Java keystore. My solution was based on the solution at the myshittycode blog, which was based on a previous solution in mykong's blog. These blog article solutions boil down to downloading a program called InstallCert, which is a Java class you can run from the command line to obtain the certificate. You then proceed to install the certificate in Java's keystore.

The InstallCert Readme worked perfectly for me. You just need to run the following commands:

  1. javac InstallCert.java
  2. java InstallCert [host]:[port] (Enter the given list number of the certificate you want to add in the list when you run the command - likely just 1)
  3. keytool -exportcert -alias [host]-1 -keystore jssecacerts -storepass changeit -file [host].cer
  4. sudo keytool -importcert -alias [host] -keystore [path to system keystore] -storepass changeit -file [host].cer

I understand the ZooKeeper in general but had problems with the terms "quorum" and "split brain" so maybe I can share my findings with you (I consider myself also a layman).

Let's say we have a ZooKeeper cluster of 5 servers. One of the servers will become the leader and the others will become followers.

  • These 5 servers form a quorum. Quorum simply means "these servers can vote upon who should be the leader".

  • So the voting is based on majority. Majority simply means "more than half" so more than half of the number of servers must agree for a specific server to become the leader.

  • So there is this bad thing that may happen called "split brain". A split brain is simply this, as far as I understand: The cluster of 5 servers splits into two parts, or let's call it "server teams", with maybe one part of 2 and the other of 3 servers. This is really a bad situation as if both "server teams" must execute a specific order how would you decide wich team should be preferred? They might have received different information from the clients. So it is really important to know what "server team" is still relevant and which one can/should be ignored.

  • Majority is also the reason you should use an odd number of servers. If you have 4 servers and a split brain where 2 servers seperate then both "server teams" could say "hey, we want to decide who is the leader!" but how should you decide which 2 servers you should choose? With 5 servers it's simple: The server team with 3 servers has the majority and is allowed to select the new leader.

  • Even if you just have 3 servers and one of them fails the other 2 still form the majority and can agree that one of them will become the new leader.

I realize once you think about it some time and understand the terms it's not so complicated anymore. I hope this also helps anyone in understanding these terms.
