In other words, if you've already read in the file (as you said), and have a big block of data in memory, then to get the first line from it efficiently, do a split() on the newline character, once only, and take the first element from the resulting list.

Note that this does not include the \n character at the end of the line, but I'm assuming you don't want it anyway (and a single-line file may not even have one). Also note that although it's pretty short and quick, it does make a copy of the data, so for a really large blob of memory you may not consider it "efficient". As always, it depends...

The fillAfter is for the fade to remain after completing the animation. The interpolator handles interpolation of the animations, as you can guess. You can also use other types of interpolators, like Linear or Overshoot.

DLL and LIB files - what and why?

There are static libraries (LIB) and dynamic libraries (DLL) - but note that .LIB files can be either static libraries (containing object files) or import libraries (containing symbols to allow the linker to link to a DLL).

Libraries are used because you may have code that you want to use in many programs. For example if you write a function that counts the number of characters in a string, that function will be useful in lots of programs. Once you get that function working correctly you don't want to have to recompile the code every time you use it, so you put the executable code for that function in a library, and the linker can extract and insert the compiled code into your program. Static libraries are sometimes called 'archives' for this reason.

Dynamic libraries take this one step further. It seems wasteful to have multiple copies of the library functions taking up space in each of the programs. Why can't they all share one copy of the function? This is what dynamic libraries are for. Rather than building the library code into your program when it is compiled, it can be run by mapping it into your program as it is loaded into memory. Multiple programs running at the same time that use the same functions can all share one copy, saving memory. In fact, you can load dynamic libraries only as needed, depending on the path through your code. No point in having the printer routines taking up memory if you aren't doing any printing. On the other hand, this means you have to have a copy of the dynamic library installed on every machine your program runs on. This creates its own set of problems.

As an example, almost every program written in 'C' will need functions from a library called the 'C runtime library, though few programs will need all of the functions. The C runtime comes in both static and dynamic versions, so you can determine which version your program uses depending on particular needs.

I found an issue with Diagram and Schema in SQL-Server 2016 that could be useful to the subject. I was editing diagram (related to, and with lot of tables of, the "sales" schema) and added a new table, BUT forgot to declare it schema, so it was with the default "dbo". Then when I returned to, and opened up, the schema "sales" and tried to add an existent table... Bluf! THAT Triggered exactly the same error described in that thread. I would like to give you a background on Universal CRT this would help you in understanding as to why the system should be updated before installing vc_redist.x64.exe.

  1. A large portion of the C-runtime moved into the OS in Windows 10 (ucrtbase.dll) and is serviced just like any other OS DLL (e.g. kernel32.dll). It is no longer serviced by Visual Studio directly. MSU packages are the file type for Windows Updates.
  2. In order to get the Windows 10 Universal CRT to earlier OSes, Windows Update packages were created to bring this OS component downlevel. KB2999226 brings the Windows 10 RTM Universal CRT to downlevel platforms (Windows Vista through Windows 8.1). KB3118401 brings Windows 10 November Update to the Universal CRT to downlevel platforms.
    • Windows XP (latest SP) is an exception here. Windows Servicing does not provide downlevel packages for that OS, so Visual Studio (Visual C++) provides a mechanism to install the UCRT into System32 via the VCRedist and MSMs.
  3. The Windows Universal Runtime is included in the VC Redist exe package as it has dependency on the Windows Universal Runtime (KB2999226).
  4. Windows 10 is the only OS that ships the UCRT in-box. All prior OSes obtain the UCRT via Windows Update only. This applies to all Vista->8.1 and associated Server SKUs.

For Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 the Windows Universal Runtime must be installed via KB2999226. However it has a prerequisite update KB2919355 which contains updates that facilitate installing the KB2999226 package.

Why does KB2999226 not always install when the runtime is installed from the redistributable? What could prevent KB2999226 from installing as part of the runtime?

The UCRT MSU included in the VCRedist is installed by making a call into the Windows Update service and the KB can fail to install based upon Windows Update service activity/state:

  1. If the machine has not updated to the required servicing baseline, the UCRT MSU will be viewed as being “Not Applicable”. Ensure KB2919355 is installed. Also, there were known issues with KB2919355 so before this the following hotfix should be installed. KB2939087 KB2975061
  2. If the Windows Update service is installing other updates when the VCRedist installs, you can either see long delays or errors indicating the machine is busy.
    • This one can be resolved by waiting and trying again later (which may be why installing via Windows Update UI at a later time succeeds).
  3. If the Windows Update service is in a non-ready state, you can see errors reflecting that.

    • We recently investigated a failure with an error code indicating the WUSA service was shutting down.
  4. To identify if the prerequisite KB2919355 is installed there are 2 options:

    1. Registry key: 64bit hive

If you have done a rake rails:update or otherwise recently changed your config/initializers/session_store.rb, this may be a symptom of old cookies in the browser. Hopefully this is done in dev/test (it was for me), and you can just clear all browser cookies related to the domain in question.

The simplest way to append more text to the end of a file would be to use:

Be careful when getting the Parameters[].Value, since the type needs to be cast from object to what you're declaring it as. And the SqlDbType used when you create the SqlParameter needs to match the type in the database. If you're going to just output it to the console, you may just be using Parameters["@Param"].Value.ToString() (either explictly or implicitly via a Console.Write() or String.Format() call).

My best method is to try:

As $_POST is an array, if the script loads and no data is present in the $_POST variable it will have an array length of 0. This can be used in an IF statement.

You may also be wondering if this throws an "undefined index" error seeing as though we're checking if $_POST is set... In fact $_POST always exists, the "undefined index" error will only appear if you try to search for a $_POST array value that doesn't exist.

$_POST always exists in itself being either empty or has array values. $_POST['value'] may not exist, thus throwing an "undefined index" error.

Number of lines in a file in Java

Only way to know how many lines there are in file is to count them. You can of course create a metric from your data giving you an average length of one line and then get the file size and divide that with avg. length but that won't be accurate.

I guess maybe there's a bug in docs and to post binary data you should try using http://redmine/uploads url instead of http://redmine/uploads.xml.

Btw, I highly recommend very good and very popular Requests library for http in Python. It's much better than what's in the standard lib (urllib2). It supports authentication as well but I skipped it for brevity here.

I don't see any differences which would warrant different behavior you observe. Having said that it's not uncommon for http servers to inspect User-Agent header and vary behavior based on its value. Try to change headers sent by Requests one by one making them the same as those being sent by urllib2 and see when it stops working.

I don't know about openca, but I will try this answer since you got very little traffic so far.

A base dn is the point from where a server will search for users. So I would try to simply use admin as a login name.

If openca behaves like most ldap aware applications, this is what is going to happen :

  1. An ldap search for the user admin will be done by the server starting at the base dn (dc=example,dc=com).
  2. When the user is found, the full dn (cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com) will be used to bind with the supplied password.
  3. The ldap server will hash the password and compare with the stored hash value. If it matches, you're in.

Getting step 1 right is the hardest part, but mostly because we don't get to do it often. Things you have to look out for in your configuraiton file are :

  • The dn your application will use to bind to the ldap server. This happens at application startup, before any user comes to authenticate. You will have to supply a full dn, maybe something like cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com.
  • The authentication method. It is usually a "simple bind".
  • The user search filter. Look at the attribute named objectClass for your admin user. It will be either inetOrgPerson or user. There will be others like top, you can ignore them. In your openca configuration, there should be a string like (objectClass=inetOrgPerson). Whatever it is, make sure it matches your admin user's object Class. You can specify two object class with this search filter (|(objectClass=inetOrgPerson)(objectClass=user)).

Excel's interface for SQL Server queries will not let you have a custom parameters.  A way around this is to create a generic Microsoft Query, then add parameters, then paste your parametorized query in the connection's properties.  Here are the detailed steps for Excel 2010:

  1. Open Excel
  2. Goto Data tab
  3. From the From Other Sources button choose From Microsoft Query
  4. The "Choose Data Source" window will appear.  Choose a datasource and click OK.
  5. The Query Qizard
    1. Choose Column: window will appear.  The goal is to create a generic query. I recommend choosing one column from a small table.
    2. Filter Data: Just click Next
    3. Sort Order: Just click Next
    4. Finish: Just click Finish.
  6. The "Import Data" window will appear:
    1. Click the Properties... button.
      1. Choose the Definition tab
      2. In the "Command text:" section add a WHERE clause that includes Excel parameters.  It's important to add all the parameters that you want now.  For example, if I want two parameters I could add this:

I was getting the same error message but had a different issue. Posting for others that are stuck on same.

I ported the get, post, put, delete functions to new router file while refactoring, and forgot to edit the paths. Example:

I suggest you to go to Query Browser and do the following:

  1. Go to schemata and find the table you want to alter.

  2. Right click and select copy create statement.

  3. Open a result tab and paste the create statement their.

  4. Go to the last line of the create statement and look for the Auto_Increment=N, (Where N is a current number for auto_increment field.)

  5. Replace N with 1.

  6. Press ctrl+enter.

Auto_increment should reset to one once you enter new row int the table.

I don't know what will happen if you try to add a row where an auto_increment field value already exist.

Array of arrays (Python/NumPy)

You'll have problems creating lists without commas. It shouldn't be too hard to transform your data so that it uses commas as separating character.

Once you have commas in there, it's a relatively simple list creation operations:

array1 = [1,2,3]
array2 = [4,5,6]

array3 = [array1, array2]

array4 = [7,8,9]
array5 = [10,11,12]

array3 = [array3, [array4, array5]]

When testing we get:

print(array3)

[[[1, 2, 3], [4, 5, 6]], [[7, 8, 9], [10, 11, 12]]]

And if we test with indexing it works correctly reading the matrix as made up of 2 rows and 2 columns:

array3[0][1]
[4, 5, 6]

array3[1][1]

XAMPP Port 80 in use by "Unable to open process" with PID 4

Simply set Apache to listen on a different port. This can be done by clicking on the "Config" button on the same line as the "Apache" module, select the "httpd.conf" file in the dropdown, then change the "Listen 80" line to "Listen 8080". Save the file and close it.

Now it avoids Port 80 and uses Port 8080 instead without issue. The only additional thing you need to do is make sure to put localhost:8080 in the browser so the browser knows to look on Port 8080. Otherwise it defaults to Port 80 and won't find your local site.

Java generics uses type erasure. The bit in the angle brackets (<Integer> and <String>) gets removed, so you'd end up with two methods that have an identical signature (the add(Set) you see in the error). That's not allowed because the runtime wouldn't know which to use for each case.

If Java ever gets reified generics, then you could do this, but that's probably unlikely now.

Set and Get Methods in java?

The above answers summarize the role of getters and setters better than I could, however I did want to add that your code should ideally be structured to reduce the use of pure getters and setters, i.e. those without complex constructions, validation, and so forth, as they break encapsulation. This doesn't mean you can't ever use them (stivlo's answer shows an example of a good use of getters and setters), just try to minimize how often you use them.

The problem is that getters and setters can act as a workaround for direct access of private data. Private data is called private because it's not meant to be shared with other objects; it's meant as a representation of the object's state. Allowing other objects to access an object's private fields defeats the entire purpose of setting it private in the first place. Moreover, you introduce coupling for every getter or setter you write. Consider this, for example:

What happens if, somewhere down the road, you decide you don't need foo anymore, or you want to make it an integer? Every object that uses the setFoo method now needs to be changed along with foo.

The reason I like Rcpp so much is that I don't always get how R Core thinks, and with Rcpp, more often than not, I don't have to.

Speaking philosophically, you're in a state of sin with regards to the functional paradigm, which tries to ensure that every value appears independent of every other value; changing one value should never cause a visible change in another value, the way you get with pointers sharing representation in C.

The problems arise when functional programming signals the small craft to move out of the way, and the small craft replies "I'm a lighthouse". Making a long series of small changes to a large object which you want to process on in the meantime puts you square into lighthouse territory.

In the C++ STL, push_back() is a way of life. It doesn't try to be functional, but it does try to accommodate common programming idioms efficiently.

With some cleverness behind the scenes, you can sometimes arrange to have one foot in each world. Snapshot based file systems are a good example (which evolved from concepts such as union mounts, which also ply both sides).

If R Core wanted to do this, underlying vector storage could function like a union mount. One reference to the vector storage might be valid for subscripts 1:N, while another reference to the same storage is valid for subscripts 1:(N+1). There could be reserved storage not yet validly referenced by anything but convenient for a quick push_back(). You don't violate the functional concept when appending outside the range that any existing reference considers valid.

Eventually appending rows incrementally, you run out of reserved storage. You'll need to create new copies of everything, with the storage multiplied by some increment. The STL implementations I've use tend to multiply storage by 2 when extending allocation. I thought I read in R Internals that there is a memory structure where the storage increments by 20%. Either way, growth operations occur with logarithmic frequency relative to the total number of elements appended. On an amortized basis, this is usually acceptable.

As tricks behind the scenes go, I've seen worse. Every time you push_back() a new row onto the dataframe, a top level index structure would need to be copied. The new row could append onto shared representation without impacting any old functional values. I don't even think it would complicate the garbage collector much; since I'm not proposing push_front() all references are prefix references to the front of the allocated vector storage.

Java Process with Input/Output Stream

Firstly, I would recommend replacing the line

ProcessBuilder is new in Java 5 and makes running external processes easier. In my opinion, its most significant improvement over Runtime.getRuntime().exec() is that it allows you to redirect the standard error of the child process into its standard output. This means you only have one InputStream to read from. Before this, you needed to have two separate Threads, one reading from stdout and one reading from stderr, to avoid the standard error buffer filling while the standard output buffer was empty (causing the child process to hang), or vice versa.

Next, the loops (of which you have two)

only exit when the reader, which reads from the process's standard output, returns end-of-file. This only happens when the bash process exits. It will not return end-of-file if there happens at present to be no more output from the process. Instead, it will wait for the next line of output from the process and not return until it has this next line.

Since you're sending two lines of input to the process before reaching this loop, the first of these two loops will hang if the process hasn't exited after these two lines of input. It will sit there waiting for another line to be read, but there will never be another line for it to read.

I compiled your source code (I'm on Windows at the moment, so I replaced /bin/bash with cmd.exe, but the principles should be the same), and I found that:

  • after typing in two lines, the output from the first two commands appears, but then the program hangs,
  • if I type in, say, echo test, and then exit, the program makes it out of the first loop since the cmd.exe process has exited. The program then asks for another line of input (which gets ignored), skips straight over the second loop since the child process has already exited, and then exits itself.
  • if I type in exit and then echo test, I get an IOException complaining about a pipe being closed. This is to be expected - the first line of input caused the process to exit, and there's nowhere to send the second line.

I have seen a trick that does something similar to what you seem to want, in a program I used to work on. This program kept around a number of shells, ran commands in them and read the output from these commands. The trick used was to always write out a 'magic' line that marks the end of the shell command's output, and use that to determine when the output from the command sent to the shell had finished.

I took your code and I replaced everything after the line that assigns to writer with the following loop:

The two echo --EOF-- commands in the line sent to the shell are there to ensure that output from the command is terminated with --EOF-- even in the result of an error from the command.

Of course, this approach has its limitations. These limitations include:

  • if I enter a command that waits for user input (e.g. another shell), the program appears to hang,
  • it assumes that each process run by the shell ends its output with a newline,
  • it gets a bit confused if the command being run by the shell happens to write out a line --EOF--.
  • bash reports a syntax error and exits if you enter some text with an unmatched ).

These points might not matter to you if whatever it is you're thinking of running as a scheduled task is going to be restricted to a command or a small set of commands which will never behave in such pathological ways.

EDIT: improve exit handling and other minor changes following running this on Linux.

How to fix nginx throws 400 bad request headers on any header testing tools?

I had the same issue and tried everything. This 400 happened for an upstream proxy. Debug logged showed absolutely nothing.

The problem was in duplicate proxy_set_header Host $http_host directive, which I didn't notice initially. Removing duplicate one solved the issue immediately. I wish nginx was saying something other than 400 in this scenario, as nginx -t didn't complain at all.

P.S. this happened while migrating from older nginx 1.10 to the newer 1.19. Before it was tolerated apparently.

And when you type a URL in the browser the request will be issued with standard headers. Anyway REST Apis are not meant to be consumed by typing the endpoint in the address bar of a browser.

The most common scenario is that your server consumes a third party REST Api.

To do so your server-side code forges a proper GET (/PUT/POST/DELETE) request pointing to a given endpoint (URL) setting (when needed, like your case) some headers and finally (maybe) sending some data (as typically occurrs in a POST request for example).

The code to forge the request, send it and finally get the response back depends on your server side language.

If you want to test a REST Api you may use curl tool from the command line.

curl makes a request and outputs the response to stdout (unless otherwise instructed).

Old thread, but I came up with a solution that I believe is cleaner since it does not disable every even bound to the object, and only prevent random and unwanted text selections on the page. Difference between os.getenv and os.environ.get

While there is no functional difference between os.environ.get and os.getenv, there is a massive difference between os.putenv and setting entries on os.environ. os.putenv is broken, so you should default to os.environ.get simply to avoid the way os.getenv encourages you to use os.putenv for symmetry.

os.putenv changes the actual OS-level environment variables, but in a way that doesn't show up through os.getenv, os.environ, or any other stdlib way of inspecting environment variables:

Perhaps an overkill if you need it just once, but you can use YaLinqo library* to filter collections (and perform any other transformations). This library allows peforming SQL-like queries on objects with fluent syntax. Its where function accepts a calback with two arguments: a value and a key. For example:

You can do it using -v (for --invert-match) option of grep as:

How to store date/time and timestamps in UTC time zone with JPA and Hibernate

You would think this common problem would be taken care of by Hibernate. But its not! There are a few "hacks" to get it right.

The one I use is to store the Date as a Long in the database. So I am always working with milliseconds after 1/1/70. I then have getters and setters on my Class that return/accept only Dates. So the API remains the same. The down side is that I have longs in the database. SO with SQL I can pretty much only do <,>,= comparisons -- not fancy date operators.

Another approach is to user a custom mapping type as described here: http://www.hibernate.org/100.html

I think the correct way to deal with this is to use a Calendar instead of a Date though. With the Calendar you can set the TimeZone before persisting.

If you create this object in Chicago:

Hibernate persists it as "12/31/1969 18:00:00". Dates should be devoid of timezone, so I'm not sure why the adjustment would be made.

Spring RestTemplate timeout

I finally got this working.

I think the fact that our project had two different versions of the commons-httpclient jar wasn't helping. Once I sorted that out I found you can do two things...

In code you can put the following:

The first time this code is called it will set the timeout for the HttpComponentsClientHttpRequestFactory class used by the RestTemplate. Therefore, all subsequent calls made by RestTemplate will use the timeout settings defined above.

I spent a lot of time trying different answers all around the internet, and I suspect the reasons why one thing works for some people and not for others is due to very small weird differences in application. For context, I needed to read in file names from a csv file that had strange and/or unmappable unicode characters and write them to a new csv file. For what it's worth, here's what worked for me:

Jenkins restrict view of jobs per user

I use combination of several plugins - for the basic assignment of roles and permission I use Role Strategy Plugin.

When I need to split some role depending on parameters (e.g. everybody with job-runner is able to run jobs, but user only user UUU is allowed to run the deployment job to deploy on machine MMM), I use Python Plugin and define a python script as first build step and end with sys.exit(-1) when the job is forbidden to be run with the given combination of parameters.

Build User Vars Plugin provides me the information about the user executing the job as environment variables.

VBA Excel 2-Dimensional Arrays

Here's A generic VBA Array To Range function that writes an array to the sheet in a single 'hit' to the sheet. This is much faster than writing the data into the sheet one cell at a time in loops for the rows and columns... However, there's some housekeeping to do, as you must specify the size of the target range correctly.

This 'housekeeping' looks like a lot of work and it's probably rather slow: but this is 'last mile' code to write to the sheet, and everything is faster than writing to the worksheet. Or at least, so much faster that it's effectively instantaneous, compared with a read or write to the worksheet, even in VBA, and you should do everything you possibly can in code before you hit the sheet.

A major component of this is error-trapping that I used to see turning up everywhere . I hate repetitive coding: I've coded it all here, and - hopefully - you'll never have to write it again.

That should work if the dates you saved in the DB are without time (just year, month, day).

Chances are that the dates you saved were new Date(), which includes the time components. To query those times you need to create a date range that includes all moments in a day.
