Is the question author aware of context menus? Stacking up buttons in a listview has performance implications, will clutter your UI and violate the recommended UI design for the platform.

On the flipside; context menus - by nature of not having a passive representation - are not obvious to the end user. Consider documenting the behaviour?

Substitute multiple whitespace with single whitespace in Python

For completeness, you can also use:

Is JavaScript a pass-by-reference or pass-by-value language?

It's interesting in JavaScript. Consider this example:

  • If obj1 was not a reference at all, then changing obj1.item would have no effect on the obj1 outside of the function.
  • If the argument was a proper reference, then everything would have changed. num would be 100, and obj2.item would read "changed".

Instead, the situation is that the item passed in is passed by value. But the item that is passed by value is itself a reference. Technically, this is called call-by-sharing.

In practical terms, this means that if you change the parameter itself (as with num and obj2), that won't affect the item that was fed into the parameter. But if you change the internals of the parameter, that will propagate back up (as with obj1).

When to use React setState callback

Sometimes we need a code block where we need to perform some operation right after setState where we are sure the state is being updated. That is where setState callback comes into play

For example, there was a scenario where I needed to enable a modal for 2 customers out of 20 customers, for the customers where we enabled it, there was a set of time taking API calls, so it looked like this

is there to move to a new line between incrementing i.

So the first print statement prints all of the elements of Grid[0][j]. When the innermost for loop has completed, the "\n" gets printed and then all of the elements of Grid[1][j] are printed on the next line, and this is repeated until you have a 10x10 grid of the elements of the 2-dimensional array, Grid.

There is still a lot of confusion in understanding the scope of "protected internal" accessors, though most have the definition defined correctly. This helped me to understand the confusion between "protected" and "protected internal":

public is really public inside and outside the assembly (public internal / public external)

protected is really protected inside and outside the assembly (protected internal / protected external) (not allowed on top level classes)

private is really private inside and outside the assembly (private internal / private external) (not allowed on top level classes)

internal is really public inside the assembly but excluded outside the assembly like private (public internal / excluded external)

protected internal is really public inside the assembly but protected outside the assembly (public internal / protected external) (not allowed on top level classes)

As you can see protected internal is a very strange beast. Not intuitive.

That now begs the question why didn't Microsoft create a (protected internal / excluded external), or I guess some kind of "private protected" or "internal protected"? lol. Seems incomplete?

Added to the confusion is the fact you can nest public or protected internal nested members inside protected, internal, or private types. Why would you access a nested "protected internal" inside an internal class that excludes outside assembly access?

Microsoft says such nested types are limited by their parent type scope, but that's not what the compiler says. You can compiled protected internals inside internal classes which should limit scope to just the assembly.

To me this feels like incomplete design. They should have simplified scope of all types to a system that clearly consider inheritance but also security and hierarchy of nested types. This would have made the sharing of objects extremely intuitive and granular rather than discovering accessibility of types and members based on an incomplete scoping system.

When should an Excel VBA variable be killed or set to Nothing?

VBA uses a garbage collector which is implemented by reference counting.

There can be multiple references to a given object (for example, Dim aw = ActiveWorkbook creates a new reference to Active Workbook), so the garbage collector only cleans up an object when it is clear that there are no other references. Setting to Nothing is an explicit way of decrementing the reference count. The count is implicitly decremented when you exit scope.

Strictly speaking, in modern Excel versions (2010+) setting to Nothing isn't necessary, but there were issues with older versions of Excel (for which the workaround was to explicitly set)

One thing should be pointed out is that the running time of For Loop or While Loop is O(n square) because get(i) operation takes O(n) time(see this for details). The other 3 ways take linear time and performs better.

Your exception message looks rather suspicious to me, but it might help you to know that "[Lcom.rsa.authagent.authapi.realmstat.AUTHw" means that the actual type of the object that you were trying to cast was com.rsa.authagent.authapi.realmstat.AUTHw[]; i.e. it was an array object.

Normally, the next steps to solving a problem like this are:

  • examining the stacktrace to figure out which line of which class threw the exception,
  • examining the corresponding source code, to see what the expected type, and
  • tracing back to see where the object with the "wrong" type came from.

Can't connect Nexus 4 to adb: unauthorized

I solved this problem without deleting any keys. Here's how:

  1. My device was connected to my computer via USB
  2. I made sure Eclipse and android device monitor weren't running.
  3. Typed at the commandline prompt: adb kill-server
  4. Typed at the commandline prompt: adb start-server
  5. After adb was restarted, I got a prompt on my device to authorize which I allowed.

Note that if you are closing each line with ;, the SET IDENTITY_INSERT mytable ON command will not hold for the following lines.

i.e.
a query like

Gives the error
Cannot insert explicit value for identity column in table 'mytable' when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF.

But a query like this will work:

It seems like the SET IDENTITY_INSERT command only holds for a transaction, and the ; will signify the end of a transaction.

How do you overcome the svn 'out of date' error?

I moved the dir to my local machine for safe-keeping, then svn deleted the stupid directory, then committed. When I tried to add the folder from my local machine it STILL threw the error (SVN move did the same thing when I tried to rename the folder). So I reverted, then I did a mkdir DIRNAME, added, and committed. Then I added the contents in and committed, and it worked.

How to play videos in android from assets folder or raw folder?

If I remember well, I had the same kind of issue when loading stuff from the asset folder but with a database. It seems that the stuff in your asset folder can have 2 stats : compressed or not.
If it is compressed, then you are allowed 1 Mo of memory to uncompress it, otherwise you will get this kind of exception. There are several bug reports about that because the documentation is not clear. So if you still want to to use your format, you have to either use an uncompressed version, or give an extension like .mp3 or .png to your file. I know it's a bit crazy but I load a database with a .mp3 extension and it works perfectly fine. This other solution is to package your application with a special option to tell it not to compress certain extension. But then you need to build your app manually and add "zip -0" option.
The advantage of an uncompressed assest is that the phase of zip-align before publication of an application will align the data correctly so that when loaded in memory it can be directly mapped.

So, solutions :

  • change the extension of the file to .mp3 or .png and see if it works
  • build your app manually and use the zip-0 option

Why do people hate SQL cursors so much?

In Oracle PL/SQL cursors will not result in table locks and it is possible to use bulk-collecting/bulk-fetching.

In Oracle 10 the often used implicit cursor

  for x in (select ....) loop
    --do something 
  end loop;

fetches implicitly 100 rows at a time. Explicit bulk-collecting/bulk-fetching is also possible.

However PL/SQL cursors are something of a last resort, use them when you are unable to solve a problem with set-based SQL.

Another reason is parallelization, it is easier for the database to parallelize big set-based statements than row-by-row imperative code. It is the same reason why functional programming becomes more and more popular (Haskell, F#, Lisp, C# LINQ, MapReduce ...), functional programming makes parallelization easier. The number CPUs per computer is rising so parallelization becomes more and more an issue.

Redirect all to index.php using htaccess

To redirect everything that doesnt exist to index.php , you can also use the FallBackResource directive

FallbackResource /index.php

It works same as the ErrorDocument , when you request a non-existent path or file on the server, the directive silently forwords the request to index.php .

If you want to redirect everything (including existant files or folders ) to index.php , you can use something like the following :

RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule ^((?!index\.php).+)$ /index.php [L]

Note the pattern ^((?!index\.php).+)$ matches any uri except index.php we have excluded the destination path to prevent infinite looping error.

An alternative solution would be to create a servlet that sends a redirect to the desired default webapp and map that servlet to all urls in the ROOT webapp.

I know that both Oracle and SqlServer have the capability to send email. You might have to work with your DBA to get that feature enabled and/or get the privilege to use it. Of course I can see how that might present its own set of problems and red tape. Assuming you can access the feature, it is fairly simple to have a batch file login to a database and send mail.

If you are counting on retrieving schemas or DTDs over the internet, you're building a slow, chatty, fragile application. What happens when that remote server hosting the file takes planned or unplanned downtime? Your app breaks. Is that OK?

URL's for schemas and the like are best thought of as unique identifiers. Not as requests to actually access that file remotely. Do some google searching on "XML catalog". An XML catalog allows you to host such resources locally, resolving the slowness, chattiness and fragility.

It's basically a permanently cached copy of the remote content. And that's OK, since the remote content will never change. If there's ever an update, it'd be at a different URL. Making the actual retrieval of the resource over the internet especially silly.

Before going into Bucketing, we need to understand what Partitioning is. Let us take the below table as an example. Note that I have given only 12 records in the below example for beginner level understanding. In real-time scenarios you might have millions of records.

PARTITIONING
---------------------
Partitioning is used to obtain performance while querying the data. For example, in the above table, if we write the below sql, it need to scan all the records in the table which reduces the performance and increases the overhead.

select * from sales_table where product_id='P1'

To avoid full table scan and to read only the records related to product_id='P1' we can partition (split hive table's files) into multiple files based on the product_id column. By this the hive table's file will be split into two files one with product_id='P1' and other with product_id='P2'. Now when we execute the above query, it will scan only the product_id='P1' file.

The syntax for creating the partition is given below. Note that we should not use the product_id column definition along with the non-partitioned columns in the below syntax. This should be only in the partitioned by clause.

Cons : We should be very careful while partitioning. That is, it should not be used for the columns where number of repeating values are very less (especially primary key columns) as it increases the number of partitioned files and increases the overhead for the Name node.



BUCKETING
------------------
Bucketing is used to overcome the cons that I mentioned in the partitioning section. This should be used when there are very few repeating values in a column (example - primary key column). This is similar to the concept of index on primary key column in the RDBMS. In our table, we can take Sales_Id column for bucketing. It will be useful when we need to query the sales_id column.

Below is the syntax for bucketing.

Check existence of directory and create if doesn't exist

The use of file.exists() to test for the existence of the directory is a problem in the original post. If subDir included the name of an existing file (rather than just a path), file.exists() would return TRUE, but the call to setwd() would fail because you can't set the working directory to point at a file.

I would recommend the use of file_test(op="-d", subDir), which will return "TRUE" if subDir is an existing directory, but FALSE if subDir is an existing file or a non-existent file or directory. Similarly, checking for a file can be accomplished with op="-f".

Additionally, as described in another comment, the working directory is part of the R environment and should be controlled by the user, not a script. Scripts should, ideally, not change the R environment. To address this problem, I might use options() to store a globally available directory where I wanted all of my output.

So, consider the following solution, where someUniqueTag is just a programmer-defined prefix for the option name, which makes it unlikely that an option with the same name already exists. (For instance, if you were developing a package called "filer", you might use filer.mainDir and filer.subDir).

The following code would be used to set options that are available for use later in other scripts (thus avoiding the use of setwd() in a script), and to create the folder if necessary:

Actually, ECMAScript says on page 15: That an identifier may start with a $, an underscore or a UnicodeLetter, and then it goes on (just below that) to specify that a UnicodeLetter can be any character from the unicode catagories, Lo, Ll, Lu, Lt, Lm and Nl. Reorder / reset auto increment primary key

The best choice is to alter the column and remove the auto_increment attribute. Then issue another alter statement and put auto_increment back onto the column. This will reset the count to the max+1 of the current rows and thus preserve foreign key references back to this table, from other tables in your database, or any other key usage for that column.

Accessing the last entry in a Map

To answer your question in one sentence:

Per default, Maps don't have a last entry, it's not part of their contract.


And a side note: it's good practice to code against interfaces, not the implementation classes (see Effective Java by Joshua Bloch, Chapter 8, Item 52: Refer to objects by their interfaces).

So your declaration should read:

Map<String,Integer> map = new HashMap<String,Integer>();

(All maps share a common contract, so the client need not know what kind of map it is, unless he specifies a sub interface with an extended contract).


Possible Solutions

Sorted Maps:

There is a sub interface SortedMap that extends the map interface with order-based lookup methods and it has a sub interface NavigableMap that extends it even further. The standard implementation of this interface, TreeMap, allows you to sort entries either by natural ordering (if they implement the Comparable interface) or by a supplied Comparator.

You can access the last entry through the lastEntry method:

Linked maps:

There is also the special case of LinkedHashMap, a HashMap implementation that stores the order in which keys are inserted. I've implemented internet-based one-time activation on my company's software (C# .net) that requires a license key that refers to a license stored in the server's database. The software hits the server with the key and is given license information that is then encrypted locally using an RSA key generated from some variables (a combination of CPUID and other stuff that won't change often) on the client computer and then stores it in the registry.

It requires some server-side coding, but it has worked really well for us and I was able to use the same system when we expanded to browser-based software. It also gives your sales people great info about who, where and when the software is being used. Any licensing system that is only handled locally is fully vulnerable to exploitation, especially with reflection in .NET. But, like everyone else has said, no system is wholly secure.

In my opinion, if you aren't using web-based licensing, there's no real point to protecting the software at all. With the headache that DRM can cause, it's not fair to the users who have actually paid for it to suffer.

Issues were:

  1. IPV6 enabled
  2. Wrong DNS server

Here is how I fixed it:

IPV6 Disabling

  • Open Terminal
  • Type su and enter to log in as the super user
  • Enter the root password
  • Type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ to change directory to /etc/modprobe.d/
  • Type vi disableipv6.conf to create a new file there
  • Press Esc + i to insert data to file
  • Type install ipv6 /bin/true on the file to avoid loading IPV6 related modules
  • Type Esc + : and then wq for save and exit
  • Type reboot to restart fedora
  • After reboot open terminal and type lsmod | grep ipv6
  • If no result, it means you properly disabled IPV6

Add Google DNS server

  • Open Terminal
  • Type su and enter to log in as the super user
  • Enter the root password
  • Type cat /etc/resolv.conf to check what DNS server your Fedora using. Mostly this will be your Modem IP address.
  • Now we have to Find a powerful DNS server. Luckily there is a open DNS server maintain by Google.
  • Go to this page and find out what are the "Google Public DNS IP addresses"
  • Today those are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. But in future those may change.
  • Type vi /etc/resolv.conf to edit the resolv.conf file
  • Press Esc + i for insert data to file
  • Comment all the things in the file by inserting # at the begin of the each line. Do not delete anything because can be useful in future.
  • Type below two lines in the file

    nameserver 8.8.8.8
    nameserver 8.8.4.4

    -Type Esc + : and then wq for save and exit

  • Now you are done and everything works fine (Not necessary to restart).
  • But every time when you restart the computer your /etc/resolv.conf will be replaced by default. So I'll let you find a way to avoid that.

This can be done without regex which is more efficient:

map, along with select and each is one of Ruby's workhorses in my code.

It allows you to run an operation on each of your array's objects and return them all in the same place. An example would be to increment an array of numbers by one:

You can't "directly" mock static method (hence extension method) with mocking framework. You can try Moles (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/pex/downloads.aspx), a free tool from Microsoft that implements a different approach. Here is the description of the tool:

Moles is a lightweight framework for test stubs and detours in .NET that is based on delegates.

Moles may be used to detour any .NET method, including non-virtual/static methods in sealed types.

You can use Moles with any testing framework (it's independent about that).

Remove element of a regular array

LINQ one-line solution:

What is the correct way to check for string equality in JavaScript?

There are actually two ways in which strings can be made in javascript.

  1. var str = 'Javascript'; This creates a primitive string value.

  2. var obj = new String('Javascript'); This creates a wrapper object of type String.

    typeof str // string
    typeof obj // object

So the best way to check for equality is using the === operator because it checks value as well as type of both operands.

If you want to check for equality between two objects then using String.prototype.valueOf is the correct way.

new String('javascript').valueOf() == new String('javascript').valueOf()

Detach (move) subdirectory into separate Git repository

You want to clone your repository and then use git filter-branch to mark everything but the subdirectory you want in your new repo to be garbage-collected.

  1. To clone your local repository:

    git clone /XYZ /ABC
    

    (Note: the repository will be cloned using hard-links, but that is not a problem since the hard-linked files will not be modified in themselves - new ones will be created.)

  2. Now, let us preserve the interesting branches which we want to rewrite as well, and then remove the origin to avoid pushing there and to make sure that old commits will not be referenced by the origin:

I did not do so and got a WARNING: Ref 'refs/tags/v0.1' is unchanged for all tags (since they were all unrelated to the subproject); additionally, after removing such tags more space will be reclaimed. Apparently git filter-branch should be able to rewrite other tags, but I could not verify this. If you want to remove all tags, use git tag -l | xargs git tag -d.

  4. Then use filter-branch and reset to exclude the other files, so they can be pruned. Let's also add --tag-name-filter cat --prune-empty to remove empty commits and to rewrite tags (note that this will have to strip their signature):

    git filter-branch --tag-name-filter cat --prune-empty --subdirectory-filter ABC -- --all
    

    or alternatively, to only rewrite the HEAD branch and ignore tags and other branches:

    git filter-branch --tag-name-filter cat --prune-empty --subdirectory-filter ABC HEAD
    
  5. Then delete the backup reflogs so the space can be truly reclaimed (although now the operation is destructive)

    git reset --hard

    git reflog expire --expire=now --all
    git gc --aggressive --prune=now
    

    and now you have a local git repository of the ABC sub-directory with all its history preserved.

Note: For most uses, git filter-branch should indeed have the added parameter -- --all. Yes that's really --space-- all. This needs to be the last parameters for the command. As Matli discovered, this keeps the project branches and tags included in the new repo.

Edit: various suggestions from comments below were incorporated to make sure, for instance, that the repository is actually shrunk (which was not always the case before).

How to strip HTML tags from string in JavaScript?

Using the browser's parser is the probably the best bet in current browsers. The following will work, with the following caveats:

  • Your HTML is valid within a <div> element. HTML contained within <body> or <html> or <head> tags is not valid within a <div> and may therefore not be parsed correctly.
  • textContent (the DOM standard property) and innerText (non-standard) properties are not identical. Docker: adding a file from a parent directory

Since -f caused another problem, I developed another solution.

  • Create a base image in the parent folder
  • Added the required files.
  • Used this image as a base image for the project which in a descendant folder.

The -f flag does not solved my problem because my onbuild image looks for a file in a folder and had to call like this:

-f foo/bar/Dockerfile foo/bar

instead of

-f foo/bar/Dockerfile .

Also note that this is only solution for some cases as -f flag

What does 'wb' mean in this code, using Python?

The wb indicates that the file is opened for writing in binary mode.

When writing in binary mode, Python makes no changes to data as it is written to the file. In text mode (when the b is excluded as in just w or when you specify text mode with wt), however, Python will encode the text based on the default text encoding. Additionally, Python will convert line endings (\n) to whatever the platform-specific line ending is, which would corrupt a binary file like an exe or png file.

Text mode should therefore be used when writing text files (whether using plain text or a text-based format like CSV), while binary mode must be used when writing non-text files like images.

document.body.innerHTML = ''; does clear the body, yeah. But it clears the innerHTML as it is at the moment the code is ran. As you run the code before the images and the script are actually in the body, it tries to clear the body, but there's nothing to clear.

If you want to clear the body, you have to run the code after the body has been filled with content. You can do this by either placing the <script> block as the last child of body, so everything is loaded before the code is ran, or you have to use some way to listen to the dom:loaded event.

Windows ignores JAVA_HOME: how to set JDK as default?

I had Java 7 and 8 installed and I want to redirect to java 7 but the java version in my cmd prompt window shows Java 8.

It's worth mentioning, as @KeithThompson pointed out in the comments, that not all Unix systems support ACL. So probably the rlidwka concept doesn't apply here.
