Twitter-Bootstrap-2 logo image on top of navbar

i use this code for navbar on bootstrap 3.2.0, the image should be at most 50px high, or else it will bleed the standard bs navbar.

Notice that i purposely do not use the class='navbar-brand' as that introduces padding on the image

<div class="navbar navbar-default navbar-fixed-top" role="navigation">
    <div class="container">
    <!-- Brand and toggle get grouped for better mobile display -->
    <div class="navbar-header">
      <button type="button" class="navbar-toggle" data-toggle="collapse" data-target=".navbar-ex1-collapse">
        <span class="sr-only">Toggle navigation</span>
        <span class="icon-bar"></span>
        <span class="icon-bar"></span>
        <span class="icon-bar"></span>
      </button>
      <a class="" href="/"><img src='img/anyWidthx50.png'/></a>
    </div>

    <!-- Collect the nav links, forms, and other content for toggling -->
    <div class="collapse navbar-collapse navbar-ex1-collapse">
       <ul class="nav navbar-nav">
        <li class="active"><a href="#">Active Link</a></li>
        <li><a href="#">More Links</a></li>
      </ul>
    </div><!-- /.navbar-collapse -->

How to initialize a static array?

Nope, no difference. It's just syntactic sugar. Arrays.asList(..) creates an additional list.

Display the current date and time using HTML and Javascript with scrollable effects in hta application

<script>
    var today = new Date;
    document.getElementById('date').innerHTML= today.toDateString();
</script>

TypeScript: Property does not exist on type '{}'

Access the field with array notation to avoid strict type checking on single field:

data['propertyName']; //will work even if data has not declared propertyName

Alternative way is (un)cast the variable for single access:

(<any>data).propertyName;//access propertyName like if data has no type

The first is shorter, the second is more explicit about type (un)casting

You can also totally disable type checking on all variable fields:

let untypedVariable:any= <any>{}; //disable type checking while declaring the variable
untypedVariable.propertyName = anyValue; //any field in untypedVariable is assignable and readable without type checking

Note: This would be more dangerous than avoid type checking just for a single field access, since all consecutive accesses on all fields are untyped

Error: " 'dict' object has no attribute 'iteritems' "

The purpose of .iteritems() was to use less memory space by yielding one result at a time while looping. I am not sure why Python 3 version does not support iteritems()though it's been proved to be efficient than .items()

If you want to include a code that supports both the PY version 2 and 3,

try:
    iteritems
except NameError:
    iteritems = items

This can help if you deploy your project in some other system and you aren't sure about the PY version.

From what I've found online, this is a bug introduced in JDK 1.7.0_45. It appears to also be present in JDK 1.7.0_60. A bug report on Oracle's website states that, while there was a fix, it was removed before the JDK was released. I do not know why the fix was removed, but it confirms what we've already suspected -- the JDK is still broken.

The bug report claims that the error is benign and should not cause any run-time problems, though one of the comments disagrees with that. In my own experience, I have been able to work without any problems using JDK 1.7.0_60 despite seeing the message.

If this issue is causing serious problems, here are a few things I would suggest:

  • Revert back to JDK 1.7.0_25 until a fix is added to the JDK.

  • Keep an eye on the bug report so that you are aware of any work being done on this issue. Maybe even add your own comment so Oracle is aware of the severity of the issue.

  • Try the JDK early releases as they come out. One of them might fix your problem.

Instructions for installing the JDK on Mac OS X are available at JDK 7 Installation for Mac OS X. It also contains instructions for removing the JDK.

How do you run a single query through mysql from the command line?

From the mysql man page:

   You can execute SQL statements in a script file (batch file) like this:

       shell> mysql db_name < script.sql > output.tab

Put the query in script.sql and run it.

Stretch and scale a CSS image in the background - with CSS only

Use the Backstretch plugin. One could even have several images slide. It also works within containers. This way for example one could have only a portion of the background been covered with an background image.

Since even I could get it to work proves it to be an easy to use plugin :).

Initializing select with AngularJS and ng-repeat

Thanks to TheSharpieOne for pointing out the ng-selected option. If that had been posted as an answer rather than as a comment, I would have made that the correct answer.

Here's a working JSFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/coverbeck/FxM3B/5/.

I also updated the fiddle to use the title attribute, which I had left out in my original post, since it wasn't the cause of the problem (but it is the reason I want to use ng-repeat instead of ng-options).

HTML:

<body ng-app ng-controller="AppCtrl">
<div>Operator is: {{filterCondition.operator}}</div>
<select ng-model="filterCondition.operator">
   <option ng-repeat="operator in operators" title="{{operator.title}}" ng-selected="{{operator.value == filterCondition.operator}}" value="{{operator.value}}">{{operator.displayName}}</option>
</select>
</body>

JS:

function AppCtrl($scope) {

    $scope.filterCondition={
        operator: 'eq'
    }

    $scope.operators = [
        {value: 'eq', displayName: 'equals', title: 'The equals operator does blah, blah'},
        {value: 'neq', displayName: 'not equal', title: 'The not equals operator does yada yada'}
     ]
}

How can I access an internal class from an external assembly?

I see only one case that you would allow exposure to your internal members to another assembly and that is for testing purposes.

Saying that there is a way to allow "Friend" assemblies access to internals:

In the AssemblyInfo.cs file of the project you add a line for each assembly.

[assembly: InternalsVisibleTo("name of assembly here")]

this info is available here.

Hope this helps.

Switch on Enum in Java

You actually can switch on enums, but you can't switch on Strings until Java 7. You might consider using polymorphic method dispatch with Java enums rather than an explicit switch. Note that enums are objects in Java, not just symbols for ints like they are in C/C++. You can have a method on an enum type, then instead of writing a switch, just call the method - one line of code: done!

enum MyEnum {
    SOME_ENUM_CONSTANT {
        @Override
        public void method() {
            System.out.println("first enum constant behavior!");
        }
    },
    ANOTHER_ENUM_CONSTANT {
        @Override
        public void method() {
            System.out.println("second enum constant behavior!");
        }
    }; // note the semi-colon after the final constant, not just a comma!
    public abstract void method(); // could also be in an interface that MyEnum implements
}

void aMethodSomewhere(final MyEnum e) {
    doSomeStuff();
    e.method(); // here is where the switch would be, now it's one line of code!
    doSomeOtherStuff();
}

Build a basic Python iterator

Include the following code in your class code.

 def __iter__(self):
        for x in self.iterable:
            yield x

Make sure that you replace self.iterablewith the iterable which you iterate through.

Here's an example code

class someClass:
    def __init__(self,list):
        self.list = list
    def __iter__(self):
        for x in self.list:
            yield x

var = someClass([1,2,3,4,5])
for num in var:
    print(num)

Output

1
2
3
4
5

Note: Since strings are also iterable, they can also be used as an argument for the class

foo = someClass("Python")
for x in foo:
    print(x)

Output

P
y
t
h
o
n

size of NumPy array

This is called the "shape" in NumPy, and can be requested via the .shape attribute:

>>> a = zeros((2, 5))
>>> a.shape
(2, 5)

If you prefer a function, you could also use numpy.shape(a).

Predicate Delegates in C#

Leading on from Andrew's answer with regards to c#2 and c#3 ... you can also do them inline for a one off search function (see below).

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;

class Program
{
    static void Main()
    {
        List<int> list = new List<int> { 1, 2, 3 };

        List<int> newList = list.FindAll(delegate(int arg)
                           {
                               return arg> 2;
                           });
    }
}

Hope this helps.

How to run a PowerShell script

Use the -File parameter in front of the filename. The quotes make PowerShell think it is a string of commands.

C++ - Assigning null to a std::string

Many C APIs use a null pointer to indicate "use the default", e.g. mosquittopp. Here is the pattern I am using, based on David Cormack's answer:

    mosqpp::tls_set(
        MqttOptions->CAFile.length() > 0 ? MqttOptions->CAFile.c_str() : NULL,
        MqttOptions->CAPath.length() > 0 ? MqttOptions->CAPath.c_str() : NULL,
        MqttOptions->CertFile.length() > 0 ? MqttOptions->CertFile.c_str() : NULL,
        MqttOptions->KeyFile.length() > 0 ? MqttOptions->KeyFile.c_str() : NULL
    );

It is a little cumbersome, but allows one to keep everything as a std::string up until the API call itself.

Receiving "fatal: Not a git repository" when attempting to remote add a Git repo

For me, this was related to malformed ownership in my .git/ path. root owned .git/HEAD and .git/index, preventing the jenkins user from running the job.

Set default value of javascript object attributes

This sure sounds like the typical use of protoype-based objects:

// define a new type of object
var foo = function() {};

// define a default attribute and value that all objects of this type will have
foo.prototype.attribute1 = "defaultValue1";

// create a new object of my type
var emptyObj = new foo();
console.log(emptyObj.attribute1);       // outputs defaultValue1

Removing "http://" from a string

Try this out:

$url = 'http://techcrunch.com/startups/'; $url = str_replace(array('http://', 'https://'), '', $url);

EDIT:

Or, a simple way to always remove the protocol:

$url = 'https://www.google.com/'; $url = preg_replace('@^.+?\:\/\/@', '', $url);

Why does Git tell me "No such remote 'origin'" when I try to push to origin?

I'm guessing you didn't run this command after the commit failed so just actually run this to create the remote :

 git remote add origin https://github.com/VijayNew/NewExample.git

And the commit failed because you need to git add some files you want to track.

Time calculation in php (add 10 hours)?

Difference between webdriver.get() and webdriver.navigate()

navigate().to() and get() will work same when you use for the first time. When you use it more than once then using navigate().to() you can come to the previous page at any time whereas you can do the same using get().

Conclusion: navigate().to() holds the entire history of the current window and get() just reload the page and hold any history.

Writing an input integer into a cell

I've done this kind of thing with a form that contains a TextBox.

So if you wanted to put this in say cell H1, then use:

ActiveSheet.Range("H1").Value = txtBoxName.Text

onchange equivalent in angular2

We can use Angular event bindings to respond to any DOM event. The syntax is simple. We surround the DOM event name in parentheses and assign a quoted template statement to it. -- reference

Since change is on the list of standard DOM events, we can use it:

(change)="saverange()"

In your particular case, since you're using NgModel, you could break up the two-way binding like this instead:

[ngModel]="range" (ngModelChange)="saverange($event)"

Then

saverange(newValue) {
  this.range = newValue;
  this.Platform.ready().then(() => {
     this.rootRef.child("users").child(this.UserID).child('range').set(this.range)
  })
}

However, with this approach saverange() is called with every keystroke, so you're probably better off using (change).

connecting to mysql server on another PC in LAN

Since you have mysql on your local computer, you do not need to bother with the IP address of the machine. Just use localhost:

mysql -u user -p

or

mysql -hlocalhost -u user -p

If you cannot login with this, you must find out what usernames (user@host) exist in the MySQL Server locallly. Here is what you do:

Step 01) Startup mysql so that no passwords are require no passwords and denies TCP/IP connections

service mysql restart --skip-grant-tables --skip-networking

Keep in mind that standard SQL for adding users, granting and revoking privs are disabled.

Step 02) Show users and hosts

select concat(''',user,'''@''',host,'''') userhost,password from mysql.user;

Step 03) Check your password to make sure it works

select user,host from mysql.user where password=password('YourMySQLPassword');

If your password produces no output for this query, you have a bad password.

If your password produces output for this query, look at the users and hosts. If your host value is '%', your should be able to connect from anywhere. If your host is 'localhost', you should be able to connect locally.

Make user you have 'root'@'localhost' defined.

Once you have done what is needed, just restart mysql normally

service mysql restart

If you are able to connect successfully on the macbook, run this query:

SELECT USER(),CURRENT_USER();

USER() reports how you attempted to authenticate in MySQL

CURRENT_USER() reports how you were allowed to authenticate in MySQL

Let us know what happens !!!

UPDATE 2012-02-13 20:47 EDT

Login to the remote server and repeat Step 1-3

See if any user allows remote access (i.e, host in mysql.user is '%'). If you do not, then add 'user'@'%' to mysql.user.

Finding the source code for built-in Python functions?

Let's go straight to your question.

Finding the source code for built-in Python functions?

The source code is located at Python/bltinmodule.c

To find the source code in the GitHub repository go here. You can see that all in-built functions start with builtin_<name_of_function>, for instance, sorted() is implemented in builtin_sorted.

For your pleasure I'll post the implementation of sorted():

builtin_sorted(PyObject *self, PyObject *const *args, Py_ssize_t nargs, PyObject *kwnames)
{
    PyObject *newlist, *v, *seq, *callable;

    /* Keyword arguments are passed through list.sort() which will check
       them. */
    if (!_PyArg_UnpackStack(args, nargs, "sorted", 1, 1, &seq))
        return NULL;

    newlist = PySequence_List(seq);
    if (newlist == NULL)
        return NULL;

    callable = _PyObject_GetAttrId(newlist, &PyId_sort);
    if (callable == NULL) {
        Py_DECREF(newlist);
        return NULL;
    }

    assert(nargs >= 1);
    v = _PyObject_FastCallKeywords(callable, args + 1, nargs - 1, kwnames);
    Py_DECREF(callable);
    if (v == NULL) {
        Py_DECREF(newlist);
        return NULL;
    }
    Py_DECREF(v);
    return newlist;
}

As you may have noticed, that's not Python code, but C code.

How to remove backslash on json_encode() function?

If you using PHP 5.2, json_encode just expect only 1 parameter when call it. This is an alternative to unescape slash of json values:

stripslashes(json_encode($array))

Don't use it if your data is complicated.

MySQL - SELECT WHERE field IN (subquery) - Extremely slow why?

I find this to be the most efficient for finding if a value exists, logic can easily be inverted to find if a value doesn't exist (ie IS NULL);

SELECT * FROM primary_table st1
LEFT JOIN comparision_table st2 ON (st1.relevant_field = st2.relevant_field)
WHERE st2.primaryKey IS NOT NULL

*Replace relevant_field with the name of the value that you want to check exists in your table

*Replace primaryKey with the name of the primary key column on the comparison table.

When is the @JsonProperty property used and what is it used for?

I think OldCurmudgeon and StaxMan are both correct but here is one sentence answer with simple example for you.

@JsonProperty(name), tells Jackson ObjectMapper to map the JSON property name to the annotated Java field's name.

//example of json that is submitted
"Car":{
  "Type":"Ferrari",
}

//where it gets mapped
public static class Car {
  @JsonProperty("Type")
  public String type;
 }

I am like using something like it for it.

In nodeJs is there a way to loop through an array without using array size?

In ES5 there is no efficient way to iterate over a sparse array without using the length property. In ES6 you can use for...of. Take this examples:

_x000D_
'use strict';_x000D_
_x000D_
var arr = ['one', 'two', undefined, 3, 4],_x000D_

_x000D_
arr[6] = 'five';_x000D_

All array methods which you can use to iterate safely over dense arrays use the length property of an object created by calling ToObject internaly. See for instance the algorithm used in the forEach method: http://www.ecma-international.org/ecma-262/5.1/#sec-15.4.4.18 However in es6, you can use for...of safely for iterating over sparse arrays.

How do you declare string constants in C?

The main disadvantage of the #define method is that the string is duplicated each time it is used, so you can end up with lots of copies of it in the executable, making it bigger.

Getting time difference between two times in PHP

You can use strtotime() for time calculation. Here is an example:

$checkTime = strtotime('09:00:59');
echo 'Check Time : '.date('H:i:s', $checkTime);
echo '<hr>';

$loginTime = strtotime('09:01:00');
$diff = $checkTime - $loginTime;
echo 'Login Time : '.date('H:i:s', $loginTime).'<br>';
echo ($diff < 0)? 'Late!' : 'Right time!'; echo '<br>';
echo 'Time diff in sec: '.abs($diff);

echo '<hr>';

$loginTime = strtotime('09:00:59');
$diff = $checkTime - $loginTime;
echo 'Login Time : '.date('H:i:s', $loginTime).'<br>';
echo ($diff < 0)? 'Late!' : 'Right time!';

echo '<hr>';

$loginTime = strtotime('09:00:00');
$diff = $checkTime - $loginTime;
echo 'Login Time : '.date('H:i:s', $loginTime).'<br>';
echo ($diff < 0)? 'Late!' : 'Right time!';

Demo

Check the already-asked question - how to get time difference in minutes:

Subtract the past-most one from the future-most one and divide by 60.

Times are done in unix format so they're just a big number showing the number of seconds from January 1 1970 00:00:00 GMT

Tracking CPU and Memory usage per process

Under Windows 10, the Task Manager can show you cumulative CPU hours. Just head to the "App history" tab and "Delete usage history". Now leave things running for an hour or two:

Windows 10 Cumulative CPU time

What this does NOT do is break down usage in browsers by tab. Quite often inactive tabs will do a tremendous amount of work, with each open tab using energy and slowing your PC.

Animate text change in UILabel

Objective-C

To achieve a true cross-dissolve transition (old label fading out while new label fading in), you don't want fade to invisible. It would result in unwanted flicker even if text is unchanged.

Use this approach instead:

CATransition *animation = [CATransition animation];
animation.timingFunction = [CAMediaTimingFunction functionWithName:kCAMediaTimingFunctionEaseInEaseOut];
animation.type = kCATransitionFade;
animation.duration = 0.75;
[aLabel.layer addAnimation:animation forKey:@"kCATransitionFade"];

// This will fade:
aLabel.text = "New"

When and how should I use a ThreadLocal variable?

In Java, if you have a datum that can vary per-thread, your choices are to pass that datum around to every method that needs (or may need) it, or to associate the datum with the thread. Passing the datum around everywhere may be workable if all your methods already need to pass around a common "context" variable.

If that's not the case, you may not want to clutter up your method signatures with an additional parameter. In a non-threaded world, you could solve the problem with the Java equivalent of a global variable. In a threaded word, the equivalent of a global variable is a thread-local variable.

How does numpy.histogram() work?

import numpy as np
hist, bin_edges = np.histogram([1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3], bins = range(5))

Below, hist indicates that there are 0 items in bin #0, 2 in bin #1, 4 in bin #3, 1 in bin #4.

print(hist)
# array([0, 2, 4, 1])

bin_edges indicates that bin #0 is the interval [0,1), bin #1 is [1,2), ..., bin #3 is [3,4).

print (bin_edges)
# array([0, 1, 2, 3, 4]))

Play with the above code, change the input to np.histogram and see how it works.

But a picture is worth a thousand words:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
plt.bar(bin_edges[:-1], hist, width = 1)
plt.xlim(min(bin_edges), max(bin_edges))
plt.show()

rails generate model

The error shows you either didn't create the rails project yet or you're not in the rails project directory.

Suppose if you're working on myapp project. You've to move to that project directory on your command line and then generate the model. Here are some steps you can refer.

Example: Assuming you didn't create the Rails app yet:

$> rails new myapp
$> cd myapp

Now generate the model from your commandline.

$> rails generate model your_model_name

What is the difference between <%, <%=, <%# and -%> in ERB in Rails?

Rails does not use the stdlib's ERB by default, it uses erubis. Sources: this dev's comment, ActionView's gemspec, accepted merge request I did while writing this.

There are behavior differences between them, in particular on how the hyphen operators %- and -% work.

Documentation is scarce, Where is Ruby's ERB format "officially" defined? so what follows are empirical conclusions.

All tests suppose:

require 'erb'
require 'erubis'

When you can use -

  • ERB: you must pass - to trim_mode option of ERB.new to use it.
  • erubis: enabled by default.

Examples:

begin ERB.new("<%= 'a' -%>\nb").result; rescue SyntaxError ; else raise; end
ERB.new("<%= 'a' -%>\nb"  , nil, '-') .result == 'ab'  or raise
Erubis::Eruby.new("<%= 'a' -%>  \n b").result == 'a b' or raise

What -% does:

  • ERB: remove the next character if it is a newline.

  • erubis:

    • in <% %> (without =), - is useless because <% %> and <% -%> are the same. <% %> removes the current line if it only contains whitespaces, and does nothing otherwise.

    • in <%= -%> (with =):

      • remove the entire line if it only contains whitespaces
      • else, if there is a non-space before the tag, and only whitesapces after, remove the whitespces that come after
      • else, there is a non-space after the tag: do nothing

Examples:

# Remove
ERB.new("a \nb <% 0 -%>\n c", nil, '-').result == "a \nb  c" or raise

# Don't do anything: not followed by newline, but by space:
ERB.new("a\n<% 0 -%> \nc", nil, '-').result == "a\nb \nc" or raise

# Remove the current line because only whitesapaces:
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <% 0 %> \nb").result == 'b' or raise

# Same as above, thus useless because longer.
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <% 0 -%> \nb").result == 'b' or raise

# Don't do anything because line not empty.
Erubis::Eruby.new("a <% 0 %> \nb").result == "a  \nb" or raise
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <% 0 %> a\nb").result == "  a\nb" or raise
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <% 0 -%> a\nb").result == "  a\nb" or raise

# Don't remove the current line because of `=`:
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <%= 0 %> \nb").result == " 0 \nb" or raise

# Remove the current line even with `=`:
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <%= 0 -%> \nb").result == " 0b"   or raise

# Remove forward only because of `-` and non space before:
Erubis::Eruby.new("a <%= 0 -%> \nb").result == "a 0b"   or raise

# Don't do anything because non-whitespace forward:
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <%= 0 -%> a\nb").result == " 0 a\nb"   or raise

What %- does:

  • ERB: remove whitespaces before tag and after previous newlines, but only if there are only whitespaces before.

  • erubis: useless because <%- %> is the same as <% %> (without =), and this cannot be used with = which is the only case where -% can be useful. So never use this.

Examples:

# Remove
ERB.new("a \n  <%- 0 %> b\n c", nil, '-').result == "a \n b\n c" or raise

# b is not whitespace: do nothing:
ERB.new("a \nb  <%- 0 %> c\n d", nil, '-').result == "a \nb   c\n d" or raise

What %- and -% do together

The exact combination of both effects separately.

source of historical stock data

Intro:
From yahoo you can get EOD (end of day) historical prices, or real-time prices. The EOD prices are amazingly simple to download. See my blog for explanations on how to get the data and for C# code examples.

I'm in the process of writing a real-time data feed "engine" that downloads and stores the real-time prices in a database. The engine will initially be able to download historical prices from Yahoo and Interactive Brokers and it will be able to store the data in a database of your choice: MS SQL, MySQL, SQLite, etc. It's open source, but I'll post more information on my blog when I get closer to releasing it (within a couple of days).

Another option is eclipse trader... it allows you to record the historical data with granularity as low as 1 minute and stores the prices locally in a text file. It basically downloads the real-time data from Yahoo with a 15 minute delay. Since I wanted a more robust solution and I'm working on a big school project for which we need data, I decided to write my own data feed engine (which I mentioned above).

Sample Code:
Here is sample C# code that demonstrates how to download real-time data:

public void Start()
{
    string url = "http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=MSFT+GOOG&f=snl1d1t1ohgdr";
    //Get page showing the table with the chosen indices
    HttpWebRequest request = null;
    IDatabase database =
        DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase(
        DatabaseFactory.DatabaseType.SQLite);

    //csv content
    try
    {
        while (true)
        {
            using (Stream file = File.Create("quotes.csv"))
            {
                request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.CreateDefault(new Uri(url));
                request.Timeout = 30000;
                using (var response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse())
                using (Stream input = response.GetResponseStream())
                {
                    CopyStream(input, file);
                }
            }
            Console.WriteLine("------------------------------------------------");
            database.InsertData(Directory.GetCurrentDirectory() + "/quotes.csv");

            File.Delete("quotes.csv");
            Thread.Sleep(10000); // 10 seconds
        }
    }
    catch (Exception exc)
    {
        Console.WriteLine(exc.ToString());
        Console.ReadKey();
    }
}

Database:
On the database side I use an OleDb connection to the CSV file to populate a DataSet and then I update my actual database via the DataSet, it basically makes it possible to match all of the columns from the CSV file returned from Yahoo directly to your database (if your database does not support batch inserts of CSV data, like SQLite). Otherwise, inserting the data is a one-liner... just batch insert the CSV into your database.

You can read more about the formatting of the url here: http://www.gummy-stuff.org/Yahoo-data.htm

How to change the button text for 'Yes' and 'No' buttons in the MessageBox.Show dialog?

I didn't think it would be that simple! go to this link: https://www.codeproject.com/Articles/18399/Localizing-System-MessageBox

Download the source. Take the MessageBoxManager.cs file, add it to your project. Now just register it once in your code (for example in the Main() method inside your Program.cs file) and it will work every time you call MessageBox.Show():

    MessageBoxManager.OK = "Alright";
    MessageBoxManager.Yes = "Yep!";
    MessageBoxManager.No = "Nope";
    MessageBoxManager.Register();

See this answer for the source code here for MessageBoxManager.cs.

How to set cellpadding and cellspacing in table with CSS?

Use padding on the cells and border-spacing on the table. The former will give you cellpadding while the latter will give you cellspacing.

table { border-spacing: 5px; } /* cellspacing */

th, td { padding: 5px; } /* cellpadding */

What do I need to do to get Internet Explorer 8 to accept a self signed certificate?

If you are doing some local testing and that you add some alias in the hosts files say

127.0.0.1 www.mysite.com

and try to use any of the above procedures you will fail. The reason is that you will import a certificate for localhost. The certificate URL won't match.

In that situation you will have to generate a self-signed certificate and THEN import it as described above.

If you are using Xampp the generation of the correct certificate can be done easily using c:\xampp\apache\makecert.bat

Is null reference possible?

Yes:

#include <iostream>
#include <functional>

struct null_ref_t {
   template <typename T>
   operator T&() {
      union TypeSafetyBreaker {
         T *ptr;

         // see https://stackoverflow.com/questions/38691282/use-of-union-with-reference
         std::reference_wrapper<T> ref;
      };

      TypeSafetyBreaker ptr = {.ptr = nullptr};

      // unwrap the reference
      return ptr.ref.get();
   }
};

null_ref_t nullref;

int main() {
   int &a = nullref;

   // Segmentation fault
   a = 4;
   return 0;
}

Updating version numbers of modules in a multi-module Maven project

versions:update-child-modules sounds like what you're looking for. You could do versions:set as mentioned, but this is a light-weight way to update the parent version numbers. For the child modules, it's my opinion that you should remove the <version> definitions, since they will inherit the parent module's version number.

Swap two items in List<T>

Maybe someone will think of a clever way to do this, but you shouldn't. Swapping two items in a list is inherently side-effect laden but LINQ operations should be side-effect free. Thus, just use a simple extension method:

static class IListExtensions {
    public static void Swap<T>(
        this IList<T> list,
        int firstIndex,
        int secondIndex
    ) {
        Contract.Requires(list != null);
        Contract.Requires(firstIndex >= 0 && firstIndex < list.Count);
        Contract.Requires(secondIndex >= 0 && secondIndex < list.Count);
        if (firstIndex == secondIndex) {
            return;
        }
        T temp = list[firstIndex];
        list[firstIndex] = list[secondIndex];
        list[secondIndex] = temp;
    }
}

Setting state on componentDidMount()

It is not an anti-pattern to call setState in componentDidMount. In fact, ReactJS provides an example of this in their documentation:

You should populate data with AJAX calls in the componentDidMount lifecycle method. This is so you can use setState to update your component when the data is retrieved.

Example From Doc

componentDidMount() {
    fetch("https://api.example.com/items")
      .then(res => res.json())
      .then(
        (result) => {
          this.setState({
            isLoaded: true,
            items: result.items
          });
        },
        // Note: it's important to handle errors here
        // instead of a catch() block so that we don't swallow
        // exceptions from actual bugs in components.
        (error) => {
          this.setState({
            isLoaded: true,
            error
          });
        }
      )
  }

How to correctly set Http Request Header in Angular 2

The simpler and current approach for adding header to a single request is:

// Step 1

const yourHeader: HttpHeaders = new HttpHeaders({
    Authorization: 'Bearer JWT-token'
});

// POST request

this.http.post(url, body, { headers: yourHeader });

// GET request

this.http.get(url, { headers: yourHeader });

How to write PNG image to string with the PIL?

With modern (as of mid-2017 Python 3.5 and Pillow 4.0):

StringIO no longer seems to work as it used to. The BytesIO class is the proper way to handle this. Pillow's save function expects a string as the first argument, and surprisingly doesn't see StringIO as such. The following is similar to older StringIO solutions, but with BytesIO in its place.

from io import BytesIO
from PIL import Image

image = Image.open("a_file.png")
faux_file = BytesIO()
image.save(faux_file, 'png')

Disabling the button after once click

If when you set disabled="disabled" immediately after the user clicks the button, and the form doesn't submit because of that, you could try two things:

//First choice [given myForm = your form]:
myInputButton.disabled = "disabled";
myForm.submit()

//Second choice:
setTimeout(disableFunction, 1);
//so the form will submit and then almost instantly, the button will be disabled

Although I honestly bet there will be a better way to do this, than that.

Plot multiple boxplot in one graph

You should get your data in a specific format by melting your data (see below for how melted data looks like) before you plot. Otherwise, what you have done seems to be okay.

require(reshape2)
df <- read.csv("TestData.csv", header=T)
# melting by "Label". `melt is from the reshape2 package.
# do ?melt to see what other things it can do (you will surely need it)
df.m <- melt(df, id.var = "Label")
> df.m # pasting some rows of the melted data.frame

#     Label variable      value

require(ggplot2)
ggplot(data = df.m, aes(x=variable, y=value)) + geom_boxplot(aes(fill=Label))

boxplot_ggplot2

Edit: I realise that you might need to facet. Here's an implementation of that as well:

p <- ggplot(data = df.m, aes(x=variable, y=value)) +
             geom_boxplot(aes(fill=Label))
p + facet_wrap( ~ variable, scales="free")

ggplot2_faceted

Edit 2: How to add x-labels, y-labels, title, change legend heading, add a jitter?

p <- ggplot(data = df.m, aes(x=variable, y=value))
p <- p + geom_boxplot(aes(fill=Label))
p <- p + geom_jitter()
p <- p + facet_wrap( ~ variable, scales="free")
p <- p + xlab("x-axis") + ylab("y-axis") + ggtitle("Title")
p <- p + guides(fill=guide_legend(title="Legend_Title"))
p

ggplot2_geom_plot

Edit 3: How to align geom_point() points to the center of box-plot? It could be done using position_dodge. This should work.

require(ggplot2)
p <- ggplot(data = df.m, aes(x=variable, y=value))
p <- p + geom_boxplot(aes(fill = Label))
# if you want color for points replace group with colour=Label
p <- p + geom_point(aes(y=value, group=Label), position = position_dodge(width=0.75))
p <- p + facet_wrap( ~ variable, scales="free")
p <- p + xlab("x-axis") + ylab("y-axis") + ggtitle("Title")
p <- p + guides(fill=guide_legend(title="Legend_Title"))

Get java.nio.file.Path object from java.io.File

From the documentation:

Paths associated with the default provider are generally interoperable with the java.io.File class. Paths created by other providers are unlikely to be interoperable with the abstract path names represented by java.io.File. The toPath method may be used to obtain a Path from the abstract path name represented by a java.io.File object. The resulting Path can be used to operate on the same file as the java.io.File object. In addition, the toFile method is useful to construct a File from the String representation of a Path.

(emphasis mine)

So, for toFile:

Returns a File object representing this path.

And toPath:

Returns a java.nio.file.Path object constructed from the this abstract path.

Convert INT to VARCHAR SQL

SELECT cast(CAST([field_name] AS bigint) as nvarchar(255)) FROM table_name

Can (domain name) subdomains have an underscore "_" in it?

Individual TLD's can place their own rules & restrictions on domains names as they see fit, such as to accomodate local languages.

For example, according to the CIRA, Canada's .ca domain names are allowed:

  • Letters a through z, and the following accented characters: é ë ê è â à æ ô Å“ ù û ü ç î ï ÿ. Note that Domain Names are not case sensitive. This means there will be no distinction made between upper case letters and lower case letters (A = a);

  • The numbers 0123456789, and

  • The hyphen character ("-) (although it cannot be used to start or end a Domain Name).

The maximum length is 63 characters, except each accented character reduces that limit by 4 characters.

(Source)

Incidentally, this allows for around 4 Quadragintillion domain name possibilities (not counting sub-domains) for dot-ca domains.

Nested jQuery.each() - continue/break

The problem here is that while you can return false from within the .each callback, the .each function itself returns the jQuery object. So you have to return a false at both levels to stop the iteration of the loop. Also since there is not way to know if the inner .each found a match or not, we will have to use a shared variable using a closure that gets updated.

Each inner iteration of words refers to the same notFound variable, so we just need to update it when a match is found, and then return it. The outer closure already has a reference to it, so it can break out when needed.

$(sentences).each(function() {
    var s = this;
    var notFound = true;

    $(words).each(function() {
        return (notFound = (s.indexOf(this) == -1));
    });

    return notFound;
});

You can try your example here.

How to simulate key presses or a click with JavaScript?

Or even shorter, with only standard modern Javascript:

var first_link = document.getElementsByTagName('a')[0];
first_link.dispatchEvent(new MouseEvent('click'));

The new MouseEvent constructor takes a required event type name, then an optional object (at least in Chrome). So you could, for example, set some properties of the event:

first_link.dispatchEvent(new MouseEvent('click', {bubbles: true, cancelable: true}));

C# binary literals

Update

C# 7.0 now has binary literals, which is awesome.

[Flags]
enum Days
{
    None = 0,
    Sunday    = 0b0000001,
    Monday    = 0b0000010,   // 2
    Tuesday   = 0b0000100,   // 4
    Wednesday = 0b0001000,   // 8
    Thursday  = 0b0010000,   // 16
    Friday    = 0b0100000,   // etc.
    Saturday  = 0b1000000,
    Weekend = Saturday | Sunday,
    Weekdays = Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday
}

Original Post

Since the topic seems to have turned to declaring bit-based flag values in enums, I thought it would be worth pointing out a handy trick for this sort of thing. The left-shift operator (<<) will allow you to push a bit to a specific binary position. Combine that with the ability to declare enum values in terms of other values in the same class, and you have a very easy-to-read declarative syntax for bit flag enums.

[Flags]
enum Days
{
    None        = 0,
    Sunday      = 1,
    Monday      = 1 << 1,   // 2
    Tuesday     = 1 << 2,   // 4
    Wednesday   = 1 << 3,   // 8
    Thursday    = 1 << 4,   // 16
    Friday      = 1 << 5,   // etc.
    Saturday    = 1 << 6,
    Weekend     = Saturday | Sunday,
    Weekdays    = Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday
}

RegEx for valid international mobile phone number

Posting a note here for users looking into this into the future. Google's libphonenumber is what you most likely would want to use. There is wrappers for PHP, node.js, Java, etc. to use the data which Google has been collecting and reduces the requirements for maintaining large arrays of regex patterns to apply.

How can I define fieldset border color?

I added it for all fieldsets with

fieldset {
        border: 1px solid lightgray;
    }

I didnt work if I set it separately using for example

border-color : red

. Then a black line was drawn next to the red line.

Turning off hibernate logging console output

Executing:

java.util.logging.Logger.getLogger("org.hibernate").setLevel(Level.OFF);

before hibernate's initialization worked for me.

Note: the line above will turn every logging off (Level.OFF). If you want to be less strict, you can use

java.util.logging.Logger.getLogger("org.hibernate").setLevel(Level.SEVERE);

that is silent enough. (Or check the java.util.logging.Level class for more levels).

Injecting $scope into an angular service function()

Well (a long one) ... if you insist to have $scope access inside a service, you can:

Create a getter/setter service

ngapp.factory('Scopes', function (){
  var mem = {};
  return {
    store: function (key, value) { mem[key] = value; },
    get: function (key) { return mem[key]; }
  };

Inject it and store the controller scope in it

ngapp.controller('myCtrl', ['$scope', 'Scopes', function($scope, Scopes) {
  Scopes.store('myCtrl', $scope);
}]);

Now, get the scope inside another service

ngapp.factory('getRoute', ['Scopes', '$http', function(Scopes, $http){
  // there you are
  var $scope = Scopes.get('myCtrl');
}]);

What is float in Java?

Make it

float b= 3.6f;

A floating-point literal is of type float if it is suffixed with an ASCII letter F or f; otherwise its type is double and it can optionally be suffixed with an ASCII letter D or d

get next and previous day with PHP

Very easy with the dateTime() object, too.

$tomorrow = new DateTime('tomorrow');
echo $tomorrow->format("Y-m-d"); // Tomorrow's date

$yesterday = new DateTime('yesterday');
echo $yesterday->format("Y-m-d"); // Yesterday's date

printf and long double

From the printf manpage:

l (ell) A following integer conversion corresponds to a long int or unsigned long int argument, or a following n conversion corresponds to a pointer to a long int argument, or a following c conversion corresponds to a wint_t argument, or a following s conversion corresponds to a pointer to wchar_t argument.

and

L A following a, A, e, E, f, F, g, or G conversion corresponds to a long double argument. (C99 allows %LF, but SUSv2 does not.)

So, you want %Le , not %le

Edit: Some further investigation seems to indicate that Mingw uses the MSVC/win32 runtime(for stuff like printf) - which maps long double to double. So mixing a compiler (like gcc) that provides a native long double with a runtime that does not seems to .. be a mess.

How to rearrange Pandas column sequence?

You could also do something like this:

df = df[['x', 'y', 'a', 'b']]

You can get the list of columns with:

cols = list(df.columns.values)

The output will produce something like this:

['a', 'b', 'x', 'y']

...which is then easy to rearrange manually before dropping it into the first function

How to get size in bytes of a CLOB column in Oracle?

It only works till 4000 byte, What if the clob is bigger than 4000 bytes then we use this

declare
v_clob_size clob;

begin

      v_clob_size:= (DBMS_LOB.getlength(v_clob)) / 1024 / 1024;
      DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line('CLOB Size   ' || v_clob_size);
end;

or

select (DBMS_LOB.getlength(your_column_name))/1024/1024 from your_table

How to watch for a route change in AngularJS?

This is for the total beginner... like me:

HTML:

Imported a csv-dataset to R but the values becomes factors

When importing csv data files the import command should reflect both the data seperation between each column (;) and the float-number seperator for your numeric values (for numerical variable = 2,5 this would be ",").

The command for importing a csv, therefore, has to be a bit more comprehensive with more commands:

    stuckey <- read.csv2("C:/kalle/R/stuckey.csv", header=TRUE, sep=";", dec=",")

This should import all variables as either integers or numeric.

How to convert a String into an ArrayList?

Ok i'm going to extend on the answers here since a lot of the people who come here want to split the string by a whitespace. This is how it's done:

List<String> List = new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList(s.split("\\s+")));

Splitting a table cell into two columns in HTML

I came here for a similar problem I was facing with my table headers.

@MrMisterMan's answer, as well as others, were really helpful, but the borders were beating my game. So, I did some research to find the use rowspan.

Here's what I did and I guess it might help others facing something similar.

proper name for python * operator?

I believe it's most commonly called the "splat operator." Unpacking arguments is what it does.

What is a "slug" in Django?

It's a descriptive part of the URL that is there to make it more human descriptive, but without necessarily being required by the web server - in What is a "slug" in Django? the slug is 'in-django-what-is-a-slug', but the slug is not used to determine the page served (on this site at least)

What is the difference between Integrated Security = True and Integrated Security = SSPI?

Let me start with Integrated Security = false

false User ID and Password are specified in the connection string.
true Windows account credentials are used for authentication.

Recognized values are true, false, yes, no, and SSPI.

If User ID and Password are specified and Integrated Security is set to true, then User ID and Password will be ignored and Integrated Security will be used

C - reading command line parameters

There's also a C standard built-in library to get command line arguments: getopt

You can check it on Wikipedia or in Argument-parsing helpers for C/Unix.

How to confirm RedHat Enterprise Linux version?

That is the release version of RHEL, or at least the release of RHEL from which the package supplying /etc/redhat-release was installed. A file like that is probably the closest you can come; you could also look at /etc/lsb-release.

It is theoretically possible to have packages installed from a mix of versions (e.g. upgrading part of the system to 5.5 while leaving other parts at 5.4), so if you depend on the versions of specific components you will need to check for those individually.

Connecting to Oracle Database through C#?

The next approach work to me with Visual Studio 2013 Update 4 1- From Solution Explorer right click on References then select add references 2- Assemblies > Framework > System.Data.OracleClient > OK and after that you free to add using System.Data.OracleClient in your application and deal with database like you do with Sql Server database except changing the prefix from Sql to Oracle as in SqlCommand become OracleCommand for example to link to Oracle XE

OracleConnection oraConnection = new OracleConnection(@"Data Source=XE; User ID=system; Password=*myPass*");
public void Open()
{
if (oraConnection.State != ConnectionState.Open)
{
oraConnection.Open();
}
}
public void Close()
{
if (oraConnection.State == ConnectionState.Open)
{
oraConnection.Close();
}}

and to execute some command like INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE using stored procedure we can use the following method

public void ExecuteCMD(string storedProcedure, OracleParameter[] param)
{
OracleCommand oraCmd = new OracleCommand();
oraCmd,CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
oraCmd.CommandText = storedProcedure;
oraCmd.Connection = oraConnection;

if(param!=null)
{
oraCmd.Parameters.AddRange(param);
}
try
{
oraCmd.ExecuteNoneQuery();
}
catch (Exception)
{
MessageBox.Show("Sorry We've got Unknown Error","Connection Error",MessageBoxButtons.OK,MessageBoxIcon.Error);
}
}

One DbContext per web request... why?

Another issue to watch out for with Entity Framework specifically is when using a combination of creating new entities, lazy loading, and then using those new entities (from the same context). If you don't use IDbSet.Create (vs just new), Lazy loading on that entity doesn't work when its retrieved out of the context it was created in. Example:

 public class Foo {
     public string Id {get; set; }
     public string BarId {get; set; }
     // lazy loaded relationship to bar
     public virtual Bar Bar { get; set;}
 }
 var foo = new Foo {
     Id = "foo id"
     BarId = "some existing bar id"
 };
 dbContext.Set<Foo>().Add(foo);
 dbContext.SaveChanges();

 // some other code, using the same context
 var foo = dbContext.Set<Foo>().Find("foo id");
 var barProp = foo.Bar.SomeBarProp; // fails with null reference even though we have BarId set.

Set QLineEdit to accept only numbers

QLineEdit::setValidator(), for example:

myLineEdit->setValidator( new QIntValidator(0, 100, this) );

or

myLineEdit->setValidator( new QDoubleValidator(0, 100, 2, this) );

See: QIntValidator, QDoubleValidator, QLineEdit::setValidator

"Large data" workflows using pandas

If your datasets are between 1 and 20GB, you should get a workstation with 48GB of RAM. Then Pandas can hold the entire dataset in RAM. I know its not the answer you're looking for here, but doing scientific computing on a notebook with 4GB of RAM isn't reasonable.

Using RegEx in SQL Server

You will have to build a CLR procedure that provides regex functionality, as this article illustrates.

Their example function uses VB.NET:

Imports System
Imports System.Data.Sql
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Server
Imports System.Data.SqlTypes
Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices
Imports System.Text.RegularExpressions
Imports System.Collections 'the IEnumerable interface is here

                                            ByVal Options As SqlInt32) As SqlBoolean
            If (input.IsNull OrElse pattern.IsNull) Then
                Return SqlBoolean.False

Jquery to open Bootstrap v3 modal of remote url

In bootstrap-3.3.7.js you will see the following code.

if (this.options.remote) {
  this.$element
    .find('.modal-content')
    .load(this.options.remote, $.proxy(function () {
      this.$element.trigger('loaded.bs.modal')
    }, this))
}

So the bootstrap is going to replace the remote content into <div class="modal-content"> element. This is the default behavior by framework. So the problem is in your remote content itself, it should contain <div class="modal-header">, <div class="modal-body">, <div class="modal-footer"> by design.

Batch / Find And Edit Lines in TXT file

You can do like this:

rename %CURR_DIR%\ftp\mywish1.txt text.txt
for /f %%a in (%CURR_DIR%\ftp\text.txt) do (
if "%%a" EQU "ex3" (
echo ex5 >> %CURR_DIR%\ftp\mywish1.txt
) else (
echo %%a >> %CURR_DIR%\ftp\mywish1.txt
)
)
del %CURR_DIR%\ftp\text.txt

How to cast Object to its actual type?

If your MyFunction() method is defined only in one class (and its descendants), try

void MyMethod(Object obj)
{
    var o = obj as MyClass;
    if (o != null)
        o.MyFunction();
}

If you have a large number in unrelated classes defining the function you want to call, you should define an interface and make your classes define that interface:

interface IMyInterface
{
    void MyFunction();
}

void MyMethod(Object obj)
{
    var o = obj as IMyInterface;
    if (o != null)
        o.MyFunction();
}

Error: unmappable character for encoding UTF8 during maven compilation

This happens in the following scenario: When working on Windows, the IDE is more than likely configured to edit files in Cp1252, which is a Microsoft adaptation of latin-11. The developer checks in, and the Continuous Integration server (usually running on Linux, which nowadays is all utf8) picks up the file, and tries to compile as a UTF-8 file, hence the warning.

Try changing the encoding to cp1252. This works. To avoid future problems of this kind, use the same encoding on all the developer machines.

Good luck...

CASE statement in SQLite query

The syntax is wrong in this clause (and similar ones)

    CASE lkey WHEN lkey > 5 THEN
        lkey + 2
    ELSE
        lkey
    END

It's either

    CASE WHEN [condition] THEN [expression] ELSE [expression] END

or

    CASE [expression] WHEN [value] THEN [expression] ELSE [expression] END

So in your case it would read:

    CASE WHEN lkey > 5 THEN
        lkey + 2
    ELSE
        lkey
    END

Check out the documentation (The CASE expression):

Most efficient way to prepend a value to an array

Example of prepending in-place:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var A = [7,8,9]_x000D_
var B = [1,2,3]_x000D_
_x000D_
A.unshift(...B)_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(A) // [1,2,3,7,8,9]
_x000D_

Mockito - NullpointerException when stubbing Method

For future readers, another cause for NPE when using mocks is forgetting to initialize the mocks like so:

@Mock
SomeMock someMock;

@InjectMocks
SomeService someService;

@Before
public void setup(){
    MockitoAnnotations.initMocks(this); //without this you will get NPE
}

@Test
public void someTest(){
    Mockito.when(someMock.someMethod()).thenReturn("some result");
   // ...
}

Also make sure you are using JUnit for all annotations. I once accidently created a test with @Test from testNG so the @Before didn't work with it (in testNG the annotation is @BeforeTest)

Postgresql, update if row with some unique value exists, else insert

This has been asked many times. A possible solution can be found here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/6527838/552671

This solution requires both an UPDATE and INSERT.

UPDATE table SET field='C', field2='Z' WHERE id=3;
INSERT INTO table (id, field, field2)
       SELECT 3, 'C', 'Z'
       WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM table WHERE id=3);

With Postgres 9.1 it is possible to do it with one query: https://stackoverflow.com/a/1109198/2873507

How do you echo a 4-digit Unicode character in Bash?

So long as your text-editors can cope with Unicode (presumably encoded in UTF-8) you can enter the Unicode code-point directly.

For instance, in the Vim text-editor you would enter insert mode and press Ctrl + V + U and then the code-point number as a 4-digit hexadecimal number (pad with zeros if necessary). So you would type Ctrl + V + U 2 6 2 0. See: What is the easiest way to insert Unicode characters into a document?

At a terminal running Bash you would type CTRL+SHIFT+U and type in the hexadecimal code-point of the character you want. During input your cursor should show an underlined u. The first non-digit you type ends input, and renders the character. So you could be able to print U+2620 in Bash using the following:

echo CTRL+SHIFT+U2620ENTERENTER

(The first enter ends Unicode input, and the second runs the echo command.)

TypeError: 'list' object cannot be interpreted as an integer

For me i was getting this error because i needed to put the arrays in paratheses. The error is a bit tricky in this case...

ie. concatenate((a, b)) is right

not concatenate(a, b)

hope that helps.

Store text file content line by line into array

Try this:

String[] arr = new String[3];// if size is fixed otherwise use ArrayList.
int i=0;
while((str = in.readLine()) != null)
    arr[i++] = str;

System.out.println(Arrays.toString(arr));

Easiest way to make lua script wait/pause/sleep/block for a few seconds?

You can use:

os.execute("sleep 1") -- I think you can do every command of CMD using os.execute("command")

or you can use:

function wait(waitTime)
    timer = os.time()
    repeat until os.time() > timer + waitTime
end

wait(YourNumberHere)

How to force JS to do math instead of putting two strings together

parseInt() should do the trick

var number = "25";
var sum = parseInt(number, 10) + 10;
var pin = number + 10;

Gives you

sum == 35
pin == "2510"

http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/jsref_parseint.asp

Note: The 10 in parseInt(number, 10) specifies decimal (base-10). Without this some browsers may not interpret the string correctly. See MDN: parseInt.

Convert file path to a file URI?

The solutions above do not work on Linux.

Using .NET Core, attempting to execute new Uri("/home/foo/README.md") results in an exception:

Unhandled Exception: System.UriFormatException: Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined.
   at System.Uri.CreateThis(String uri, Boolean dontEscape, UriKind uriKind)
   at System.Uri..ctor(String uriString)
   ...

You need to give the CLR some hints about what sort of URL you have.

This works:

Uri fileUri = new Uri(new Uri("file://"), "home/foo/README.md");

...and the string returned by fileUri.ToString() is "file:///home/foo/README.md"

This works on Windows, too.

new Uri(new Uri("file://"), @"C:\Users\foo\README.md").ToString()

...emits "file:///C:/Users/foo/README.md"

Python socket receive - incoming packets always have a different size

That's the nature of TCP: the protocol fills up packets (lower layer being IP packets) and sends them. You can have some degree of control over the MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit).

In other words: you must devise a protocol that rides on top of TCP where your "payload delineation" is defined. By "payload delineation" I mean the way you extract the unit of message your protocol supports. This can be as simple as "every NULL terminated strings".

jQuery Cross Domain Ajax

Looks like the inner JSON struct is passed along as a string. You'll have to JSON.parse() it once more to get that data as an object.

try {
  responseData = JSON.parse(responseData);
}
catch (e) {}

Edit: Try the following:

$.ajax({
    type: 'GET',
    dataType: "json",
    url: "http://someotherdomain.com/service.svc",
    success: function (responseData, textStatus, jqXHR) {
        console.log("in");
        var data = JSON.parse(responseData['AuthenticateUserResult']);
        console.log(data);
    },
    error: function (responseData, textStatus, errorThrown) {
        alert('POST failed.');
    }
});

How to get Maven project version to the bash command line

One alternative would be to parse with yq (https://github.com/kislyuk/yq) like so:

cat pom.xml | xq -r '.project.version'

Notice the executable is xq not yq

To get xq, install yq like so pip install yq

Is there an opposite to display:none?

I ran into this challenge when building an app where I wanted a table hidden for certain users but not for others.

Initially I set it up as display:none but then display:inline-block for those users who I wanted to see it but I experienced the formatting issues you might expect (columns consolidating or generally messy).

The way I worked around it was to show the table first and then do "display:none" for those users who I didn't want to see it. This way, it formatted normally but then disappeared as needed.

Bit of a lateral solution but might help someone!

<div style display="none" > inside a table not working

Semantically what you are trying is invalid html, table element cannot have a div element as a direct child. What you can do is, get your div element inside a td element and than try to hide it

Returning Arrays in Java

You need to do something with the return value...

import java.util.Arrays;

public class trial1{

    public static void main(String[] args){
        int[] B = numbers();
        System.out.println(Arrays.toString(B));
    }

    public static int[] numbers(){
        int[] A = {1,2,3};
        return A;
    }
}

Provide an image for WhatsApp link sharing

2020 standards

It takes a few steps to get the perfect preview for WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and bookmark icons for pc's and mobile devices. If you like reading go to ogp.me - but make sure to read steps 1 - 6 in this answer to get the best WhatsApp preview.

Please note: some apps or websites use cache or even store the website preview to their database. This means when you're testing your link in WhatsApp or Facebook for example, you'll most likely not see any difference right away. Using another link (another page) will do the trick. But as soon as you use that link once, this "please note" section starts all over again.

Step 1: title

Maximum of 65 characters

<title>your keyword rich title of the website and/or webpage</title>

Step 2: description

Maximum of 155 characters

<meta name="description" content="description of your website/webpage, make sure you use keywords!">

Step 3: og:title

Maximum 35 characters

<meta property="og:title" content="short title of your website/webpage" />

Step 4: og:url

Full link to the current webpage address

<meta property="og:url" content="https://www.example.com/webpage/" />

Step 5: og:description

Maximum 65 characters

<meta property="og:description" content="description of your website/webpage">

Step 6: og:image

Image(JPG or PNG) with a size less than 300KB and minimum dimensions of 300 x 200 *. This image should be served via a HTTPS connection with a valid non-self-signed certificate.

<meta property="og:image" content="//cdn.example.com/uploads/images/webpage_300x200.png">

* @RichDeBourke mentioned this to me, but apparently WhatsApp has increased its maximum image size (dimensions as well as file size). I did some tests: it does not work consistently every time on every device. I tested 2.x Mb images and even that seemed to work 9/10 times. <300KB is the safest approach, but you should be fine using larger images as of 18-02-2020. I would recommend keeping the file size below 2MB, though. And definitely throw your image through TinyPNG or any other image compression algorithm if you haven't already.

If you completed the steps above, you can now see your preview in WhatsApp! However, be aware of the "please note" section above.

Step 7: og:type

In order for your object to be represented within the graph, you need to specify its type. Here's a list of the global types available: http://ogp.me/#types. You can also specify your own types.

<meta property="og:type" content="article" />

Step 8: og:locale

The locale of the resource. You can also use og:locale:alternate if you have other language translations available.

If you don't specify og:locale, it defaults to en_US.

<meta property="og:locale" content="en_GB" />
<meta property="og:locale:alternate" content="fr_FR" />
<meta property="og:locale:alternate" content="es_ES" />

Step 9: Twitter

For the best Twitter support read this.

Step 10: Facebook

For the best Facebook support read this.

Step 11: favicon

For the best favicon support for all browsers and devices read this.

Bonus step 12: video/audio

It's also possible to share audio/video. Facebook and twitter for example share videos very well. Read ogp.me.

ModelState.IsValid == false, why?

About "can it be that 0 errors and IsValid == false": here's MVC source code from https://github.com/Microsoft/referencesource/blob/master/System.Web/ModelBinding/ModelStateDictionary.cs#L37-L41

public bool IsValid {
    get {
        return Values.All(modelState => modelState.Errors.Count == 0);
    }
}

Now, it looks like it can't be. Well, that's for ASP.NET MVC v1.

Xcode 7 error: "Missing iOS Distribution signing identity for ..."

I imported the new Apple WWDR Certificate that expires in 2023, but I was still getting problems and my developer certificates were showing the invalid issuer error.

In keychain access, go to View -> Show Expired Certificates, then in your login keychain highlight the expired WWDR Certificate and delete it. I also had the same expired certificate in my System keychain, so I deleted it from there too.(Important)

After deleting the expired cert from the login and System keychains, I was able to build for Distribution again.

How to call multiple JavaScript functions in onclick event?

You can compose all the functions into one and call them.Libraries like Ramdajs has a function to compose multiple functions into one.

<a href="#" onclick="R.compose(fn1,fn2,fn3)()">Click me To fire some functions</a>

or you can put the composition as a seperate function in js file and call it

const newFunction = R.compose(fn1,fn2,fn3);

<a href="#" onclick="newFunction()">Click me To fire some functions</a>

how do I make a single legend for many subplots with matplotlib?

You just have to ask for the legend once, outside of your loop.

For example, in this case I have 4 subplots, with the same lines, and a single legend.

from matplotlib.pyplot import *

ficheiros = ['120318.nc', '120319.nc', '120320.nc', '120321.nc']

fig = figure()
fig.suptitle('concentration profile analysis')

for a in range(len(ficheiros)):
    # dados is here defined
    level = dados.variables['level'][:]

    ax = fig.add_subplot(2,2,a+1)
    xticks(range(8), ['0h','3h','6h','9h','12h','15h','18h','21h'])
    ax.set_xlabel('time (hours)')
    ax.set_ylabel('CONC ($\mu g. m^{-3}$)')

    for index in range(len(level)):
        conc = dados.variables['CONC'][4:12,index] * 1e9
        ax.plot(conc,label=str(level[index])+'m')

    dados.close()

ax.legend(bbox_to_anchor=(1.05, 0), loc='lower left', borderaxespad=0.)
         # it will place the legend on the outer right-hand side of the last axes

Multi-key dictionary in c#?

I think you would need a Tuple2 like class. Be sure that it's GetHashCode() and Equals() is based upon the two contained elements.

ORA-00904: invalid identifier

I had the same exception in JPA 2 using eclipse link. I had an @embedded class with one to one relationship with an entity. By mistake ,in the embedded class, i had also the annotation @Table("TRADER"). When the DB was created by the JPA from the entities it also created a table TRADER (which was a wrong as the Trader entity was embedded to the main entity) and the existence of that table was causing the above exception every time i was trying to persist my entity. After deleting the TRADER table the exception disappered.

Powershell script to locate specific file/file name?

To search the whole computer:

gdr -PSProvider 'FileSystem' | %{ ls -r $_.root} 2>$null | where { $_.name -eq "httpd.exe" }

jQuery events .load(), .ready(), .unload()

window load will wait for all resources to be loaded.

document ready waits for the document to be initialized.

unload well, waits till the document is being unloaded.

the order is: document ready, window load, ... ... ... ... window unload.

always use document ready unless you need to wait for your images to load.

shorthand for document ready:

$(function(){
    // yay!
});

Fastest way to iterate over all the chars in a String

This is just micro-optimisation that you shouldn't worry about.

char[] chars = str.toCharArray();

returns you a copy of str character arrays (in JDK, it returns a copy of characters by calling System.arrayCopy).

Other than that, str.charAt() only checks if the index is indeed in bounds and returns a character within the array index.

The first one doesn't create additional memory in JVM.

Setting values of input fields with Angular 6

You should use the following:

       <td><input id="priceInput-{{orderLine.id}}" type="number" [(ngModel)]="orderLine.price"></td>

You will need to add the FormsModule to your app.module in the inputs section as follows:

import { FormsModule } from '@angular/forms';

@NgModule({
  declarations: [
    ...
  ],
  imports: [
    BrowserModule,
    FormsModule
  ],
  ..

The use of the brackets around the ngModel are as follows:

  • The [] show that it is taking an input from your TS file. This input should be a public member variable. A one way binding from TS to HTML.

  • The () show that it is taking output from your HTML file to a variable in the TS file. A one way binding from HTML to TS.

  • The [()] are both (e.g. a two way binding)

See here for more information: https://angular.io/guide/template-syntax

I would also suggest replacing id="priceInput-{{orderLine.id}}" with something like this [id]="getElementId(orderLine)" where getElementId(orderLine) returns the element Id in the TS file and can be used anywere you need to reference the element (to avoid simple bugs like calling it priceInput1 in one place and priceInput-1 in another. (if you still need to access the input by it's Id somewhere else)

Get value (String) of ArrayList<ArrayList<String>>(); in Java

listOfSomething.Clear();
listOfSomething.Add("first");
collection.Add(listOfSomething);

You are clearing the list here and adding one element ("first"), the 1st reference of listOfSomething is updated as well sonce both reference the same object, so when you access the second element myList.get(1) (which does not exist anymore) you get the null.

Notice both collection.Add(listOfSomething); save two references to the same arraylist object.

You need to create two different instances for two elements:

ArrayList<ArrayList<String>> collection = new ArrayList<ArrayList<String>>();

ArrayList<String> listOfSomething1 = new ArrayList<String>();
listOfSomething1.Add("first");
listOfSomething1.Add("second");

ArrayList<String> listOfSomething2 = new ArrayList<String>();
listOfSomething2.Add("first");

collection.Add(listOfSomething1);
collection.Add(listOfSomething2);

Python: avoid new line with print command

Utilize a trailing comma to prevent a new line from being presented:

print "this should be"; print "on the same line"

Should be:

print "this should be", "on the same line"

In addition, you can just attach the variable being passed to the end of the desired string by:

print "Nope, that is not a two. That is a", x

You can also use:

print "Nope, that is not a two. That is a %d" % x #assuming x is always an int

You can access additional documentation regarding string formatting utilizing the % operator (modulo).

Getting Integer value from a String using javascript/jquery

Is this logically possible??.. I guess the approach that you must take is this way :

Str1 ="test123.00"
Str2 ="yes50.00"

This will be impossible to tackle unless you have delimiter in between test and 123.00

eg: Str1 = "test-123.00"

Then you can split this way

Str2 = Str1.split("-");

This will return you an array of words split with "-"

Then you can do parseFloat(Str2[1]) to get the floating value i.e 123.00

How do I enable EF migrations for multiple contexts to separate databases?

The 2nd call to Enable-Migrations is failing because the Configuration.cs file already exists. If you rename that class and file, you should be able to run that 2nd Enable-Migrations, which will create another Configuration.cs.

You will then need to specify which configuration you want to use when updating the databases.

Update-Database -ConfigurationTypeName MyRenamedConfiguration

Delete topic in Kafka 0.8.1.1

First, you run this command to delete your topic:

$ bin/kafka-topics.sh --delete --bootstrap-server localhost:9092 --topic <topic_name>

List active topics to check delete completely:

$ bin/kafka-topics.sh --list --bootstrap-server localhost:9092

How do you add swap to an EC2 instance?

A fix for this problem is to add swap (i.e. paging) space to the instance.

Paging works by creating an area on your hard drive and using it for extra memory, this memory is much slower than normal memory however much more of it is available.

To add this extra space to your instance you type:

sudo /bin/dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/swap.1 bs=1M count=1024
sudo /sbin/mkswap /var/swap.1
sudo chmod 600 /var/swap.1
sudo /sbin/swapon /var/swap.1

If you need more than 1024 then change that to something higher.

To enable it by default after reboot, add this line to /etc/fstab:

/var/swap.1   swap    swap    defaults        0   0

Remove empty lines in a text file via grep

If removing empty lines means lines including any spaces, use:

grep '\S' FILE

For example:

$  printf "line1\n\nline2\n \nline3\n\t\nline4\n" > FILE
$  cat -v FILE
line1

line2

line3

line4
$  grep '\S' FILE
line1

line3
line4
$  grep . FILE

Python initializing a list of lists

The problem is that they're all the same exact list in memory. When you use the [x]*n syntax, what you get is a list of n many x objects, but they're all references to the same object. They're not distinct instances, rather, just n references to the same instance.

To make a list of 3 different lists, do this:

x = [[] for i in range(3)]

This gives you 3 separate instances of [], which is what you want

[[]]*n is similar to

l = []
x = []
for i in range(n):
    x.append(l)

While [[] for i in range(3)] is similar to:

x = []
for i in range(n):
    x.append([])   # appending a new list!

In [20]: x = [[]] * 4

In [21]: [id(i) for i in x]
Out[21]: [164363948, 164363948, 164363948, 164363948] # same id()'s for each list,i.e same object

In [22]: x=[[] for i in range(4)]

In [23]: [id(i) for i in x]
Out[23]: [164382060, 164364140, 164363628, 164381292] #different id(), i.e unique objects this time

GoogleMaps API KEY for testing

There seems no way to have google maps api key free without credit card. To test the functionality of google map you can use it while leaving the api key field "EMPTY". It will show a message saying "For Development Purpose Only". And that way you can test google map functionality without putting billing information for google map api key.

As per https://android.stackexchange.com/a/78183/239063 you can run a one line command in Linux to add in an appropriate tar header to extract it.

( printf "\x1f\x8b\x08\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00" ; tail -c +25 backup.ab ) | tar xfvz -

Replace backup.ab with the path to your file.

Using a custom typeface in Android

Using pospi's suggestion and working with the 'tag' property like Richard did, i created a custom class that loads my custom fonts and applies them to the views according to their tags.

So basicly, instead of setting the TypeFace in the attribute android:fontFamily you are using the android:tag attritube and set it to one of the defined enums.

public class Fonts {
    private AssetManager mngr;

    public Fonts(Context context) {
        mngr = context.getAssets();
    }
    private enum AssetTypefaces {
        RobotoLight,
        RobotoThin,
        RobotoCondensedBold,
        RobotoCondensedLight,
        RobotoCondensedRegular
    }

    private Typeface getTypeface(AssetTypefaces font) {
        Typeface tf = null;
        switch (font) {
            case RobotoLight:
                tf = Typeface.createFromAsset(mngr,"fonts/Roboto-Light.ttf");
                break;
            case RobotoThin:
                tf = Typeface.createFromAsset(mngr,"fonts/Roboto-Thin.ttf");
                break;
            case RobotoCondensedBold:
                tf = Typeface.createFromAsset(mngr,"fonts/RobotoCondensed-Bold.ttf");
                break;
            case RobotoCondensedLight:
                tf = Typeface.createFromAsset(mngr,"fonts/RobotoCondensed-Light.ttf");
                break;
            case RobotoCondensedRegular:
                tf = Typeface.createFromAsset(mngr,"fonts/RobotoCondensed-Regular.ttf");
                break;
            default:
                tf = Typeface.DEFAULT;
                break;
        }
        return tf;
    }
    public void setupLayoutTypefaces(View v) {
        try {
            if (v instanceof ViewGroup) {
                ViewGroup vg = (ViewGroup) v;
                for (int i = 0; i < vg.getChildCount(); i++) {
                    View child = vg.getChildAt(i);
                    setupLayoutTypefaces(child);
                }
            } else if (v instanceof TextView) {
                if (v.getTag().toString().equals(AssetTypefaces.RobotoLight.toString())){
                    ((TextView)v).setTypeface(getTypeface(AssetTypefaces.RobotoLight));
                }else if (v.getTag().toString().equals(AssetTypefaces.RobotoCondensedRegular.toString())) {

In your Activity or Fragment you just call

Fonts fonts = new Fonts(getActivity());
fonts.setupLayoutTypefaces(mainLayout);

Callback after all asynchronous forEach callbacks are completed

You shouldn't need a callback for iterating through a list. Just add the end() call after the loop.

posts.forEach(function(v, i){
   res.write(v + ". Index " + i);
});
res.end();

What is the @Html.DisplayFor syntax for?

I think the main benefit would be when you define your own Display Templates, or use Data annotations.

So for example if your title was a date, you could define

[DisplayFormat(DataFormatString = "{0:d}")]

and then on every page it would display the value in a consistent manner. Otherwise you may have to customise the display on multiple pages. So it does not help much for plain strings, but it does help for currencies, dates, emails, urls, etc.

For example instead of an email address being a plain string it could show up as a link:

<a href="mailto:@ViewData.Model">@ViewData.TemplateInfo.FormattedModelValue</a>

Stop embedded youtube iframe?

Talvi's answer may still work, but that Youtube Javascript API has been marked as deprecated. You should now be using the newer Youtube IFrame API.

The documentation provides a few ways to accomplish video embedding, but for your goal, you'd include the following:

//load the IFrame Player API code asynchronously
var tag = document.createElement('script');

tag.src = "https://www.youtube.com/iframe_api";
var firstScriptTag = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0];
firstScriptTag.parentNode.insertBefore(tag, firstScriptTag);

//will be youtube player references once API is loaded
var players = [];

//gets called once the player API has loaded
function onYouTubeIframeAPIReady() {
    $('.myiframeclass').each(function() {
        var frame = $(this);

        //create each instance using the individual iframe id
        var player = new YT.Player(frame.attr('id'));

        players.push(player);
    });
}

//global stop button click handler
$('#mybutton').click(function(){

    //loop through each Youtube player instance and call stopVideo()
    for (var i in players) {
        var player = players[i];
        player.stopVideo();
    }
});

How do you strip a character out of a column in SQL Server?

This is done using the REPLACE function

To strip out "somestring" from "SomeColumn" in "SomeTable" in the SELECT query:

SELECT REPLACE([SomeColumn],'somestring','') AS [SomeColumn] FROM [SomeTable]

To update the table and strip out "somestring" from "SomeColumn" in "SomeTable"

UPDATE [SomeTable] SET [SomeColumn] = REPLACE([SomeColumn], 'somestring', '')

Javascript: Setting location.href versus location

A couple of years ago, location did not work for me in IE and location.href did (and both worked in other browsers). Since then I have always just used location.href and never had trouble again. I can't remember which version of IE that was.

Iterator invalidation rules

Since this question draws so many votes and kind of becomes an FAQ, I guess it would be better to write a separate answer to mention one significant difference between C++03 and C++11 regarding the impact of std::vector's insertion operation on the validity of iterators and references with respect to reserve() and capacity(), which the most upvoted answer failed to notice.

C++ 03:

Reallocation invalidates all the references, pointers, and iterators referring to the elements in the sequence. It is guaranteed that no reallocation takes place during insertions that happen after a call to reserve() until the time when an insertion would make the size of the vector greater than the size specified in the most recent call to reserve().

C++11:

Reallocation invalidates all the references, pointers, and iterators referring to the elements in the sequence. It is guaranteed that no reallocation takes place during insertions that happen after a call to reserve() until the time when an insertion would make the size of the vector greater than the value of capacity().

So in C++03, it is not "unless the new container size is greater than the previous capacity (in which case all iterators and references are invalidated)" as mentioned in the other answer, instead, it should be "greater than the size specified in the most recent call to reserve()". This is one thing that C++03 differs from C++11. In C++03, once an insert() causes the size of the vector to reach the value specified in the previous reserve() call (which could well be smaller than the current capacity() since a reserve() could result a bigger capacity() than asked for), any subsequent insert() could cause reallocation and invalidate all the iterators and references. In C++11, this won't happen and you can always trust capacity() to know with certainty that the next reallocation won't take place before the size overpasses capacity().

In conclusion, if you are working with a C++03 vector and you want to make sure a reallocation won't happen when you perform insertion, it's the value of the argument you previously passed to reserve() that you should check the size against, not the return value of a call to capacity(), otherwise you may get yourself surprised at a "premature" reallocation.

Using the slash character in Git branch name

Are you sure branch labs does not already exist (as in this thread)?

You can't have both a file, and a directory with the same name.

You're trying to get git to do basically this:

% cd .git/refs/heads
% ls -l
total 0
-rw-rw-r-- 1 jhe jhe 41 2009-11-14 23:51 labs
-rw-rw-r-- 1 jhe jhe 41 2009-11-14 23:51 master
% mkdir labs
mkdir: cannot create directory 'labs': File exists

You're getting the equivalent of the "cannot create directory" error.
When you have a branch with slashes in it, it gets stored as a directory hierarchy under .git/refs/heads.

how to convert numeric to nvarchar in sql command

If the culture of the result doesn't matters or we're only talking of integer values, CONVERT or CAST will be fine.

However, if the result must match a specific culture, FORMAT might be the function to go:

DECLARE @value DECIMAL(19,4) = 1505.5698
SELECT CONVERT(NVARCHAR, @value)        -->  1505.5698
SELECT FORMAT(@value, 'N2', 'en-us')    --> 1,505.57
SELECT FORMAT(@value, 'N2', 'de-de')    --> 1.505,57

For more information on FORMAT see here.

Of course, formatting the result should be a matter of the UI layer of the software.

How can I use JQuery to post JSON data?

You're passing an object, not a JSON string. When you pass an object, jQuery uses $.param to serialize the object into name-value pairs.

If you pass the data as a string, it won't be serialized:

$.ajax({
    type: 'POST',
    url: '/form/',
    data: '{"name":"jonas"}', // or JSON.stringify ({name: 'jonas'}),
    success: function(data) { alert('data: ' + data); },
    contentType: "application/json",
    dataType: 'json'

Creating and Naming Worksheet in Excel VBA

CSS text-overflow in a table cell?

I solved this using an absolutely positioned div inside the cell (relative).

td {
    position: relative;
}
td > div {
    position: absolute;
    white-space: nowrap;
    overflow: hidden;
    text-overflow: ellipsis;
    max-width: 100%;
}

That's it. Then you can either add a top: value to the div or vertically center it:

td > div {
    top: 0;
    bottom: 0;
    margin: auto 0;
    height: 1.5em; // = line height
}

To get some space on the right side, you can reduce the max-width a little.

is(':checked') will return true if at least one or more of the checkboxes are checked.

This happens when child scopes are in play - like child routes or ng-repeats. The child-scope creates it's own value and a name conflict is born as illustrated here:

Design Patterns web based applications

IMHO, there is not much difference in case of web application if you look at it from the angle of responsibility assignment. However, keep the clarity in the layer. Keep anything purely for the presentation purpose in the presentation layer, like the control and code specific to the web controls. Just keep your entities in the business layer and all features (like add, edit, delete) etc in the business layer. However rendering them onto the browser to be handled in the presentation layer. For .Net, the ASP.NET MVC pattern is very good in terms of keeping the layers separated. Look into the MVC pattern.

How do I convert from stringstream to string in C++?

std::stringstream::str() is the method you are looking for.

With std::stringstream:

template <class T>
std::string YourClass::NumericToString(const T & NumericValue)
{
    std::stringstream ss;
    ss << NumericValue;
    return ss.str();
}

std::stringstream is a more generic tool. You can use the more specialized class std::ostringstream for this specific job.

template <class T>
std::string YourClass::NumericToString(const T & NumericValue)
{
    std::ostringstream oss;
    oss << NumericValue;
    return oss.str();
}

If you are working with std::wstring type of strings, you must prefer std::wstringstream or std::wostringstream instead.

template <class T>
std::wstring YourClass::NumericToString(const T & NumericValue)
{
    std::wostringstream woss;
    woss << NumericValue;
    return woss.str();
}

if you want the character type of your string could be run-time selectable, you should also make it a template variable.

template <class CharType, class NumType>
std::basic_string<CharType> YourClass::NumericToString(const NumType & NumericValue)
{
    std::basic_ostringstream<CharType> oss;
    oss << NumericValue;
    return oss.str();
}

For all the methods above, you must include the following two header files.

#include <string>
#include <sstream>

Note that, the argument NumericValue in the examples above can also be passed as std::string or std::wstring to be used with the std::ostringstream and std::wostringstream instances respectively. It is not necessary for the NumericValue to be a numeric value.

Room - Schema export directory is not provided to the annotation processor so we cannot export the schema

As per the docs:

You can set annotation processor argument (room.schemaLocation) to tell Room to export the schema into a folder. Even though it is not mandatory, it is a good practice to have version history in your codebase and you should commit that file into your version control system (but don't ship it with your app!).

So if you don't need to check the schema and you want to get rid of the warning, just add exportSchema = false to your RoomDatabase, as follows.

@Database(entities = { YourEntity.class }, version = 1, exportSchema = false)
public abstract class AppDatabase extends RoomDatabase {
   //...
}

If you follow @mikejonesguy answer below, you will follow the good practice mentioned in the docs :). Basically you will get a .json file in your ../app/schemas/ folder. And it looks something like this:

{
  "formatVersion": 1,
  "database": {
    "version": 1,
    "identityHash": "53db508c5248423325bd5393a1c88c03",

          },
          {
            "fieldPath": "message",
            "columnName": "message",
            "affinity": "TEXT"
          },

            "columnName": "date",
            "affinity": "INTEGER"
          },
          {
            "fieldPath": "clientId",
            "columnName": "client_id",
            "affinity": "INTEGER"
          }
        ],
        "primaryKey": {
          "columnNames": [
            "id"
          ],
          "autoGenerate": true
        },
        "indices": [],
        "foreignKeys": []
      }
    ],
    "setupQueries": [

If my understanding is correct, you will get such a file with every database version update, so that you can easily follow the history of your db.

angular-cli where is webpack.config.js file - new angular6 does not support ng eject

There's a nice way to eject webpack.config.js from angular-cli. Just run:

$ ng eject

This will generate webpack.config.js in the root folder of your project, and you're free to configure it the way you want. The downside of this is that build/start scripts in your package.json will be replaced with the new commands and instead of

$ ng serve

you would have to do something like

$ npm run build & npm run start

This method should work in all the recent versions of angular-cli (I personally tried a few, with the oldest being 1.0.0-beta.21, and the latest 1.0.0-beta.32.3)

How should we manage jdk8 stream for null values

Stuart's answer provides a great explanation, but I'd like to provide another example.

I ran into this issue when attempting to perform a reduce on a Stream containing null values (actually it was LongStream.average(), which is a type of reduction). Since average() returns OptionalDouble, I assumed the Stream could contain nulls but instead a NullPointerException was thrown. This is due to Stuart's explanation of null v. empty.

So, as the OP suggests, I added a filter like so:

list.stream()
    .filter(o -> o != null)
    .reduce(..);

Or as tangens pointed out below, use the predicate provided by the Java API:

list.stream()
    .filter(Objects::nonNull)
    .reduce(..);

From the mailing list discussion Stuart linked: Brian Goetz on nulls in Streams

if(!toDate.before(nowDate)) {
    //display your report
} else {

How do I convert date/time from 24-hour format to 12-hour AM/PM?

I think you can use date() function to achive this

$date = '19:24:15 06/13/2013';
echo date('h:i:s a m/d/Y', strtotime($date));

This will output

07:24:15 pm 06/13/2013

Live Sample

h is used for 12 digit time
i stands for minutes
s seconds
a will return am or pm (use in uppercase for AM PM)
m is used for months with digits
d is used for days in digit
Y uppercase is used for 4 digit year (use it lowercase for two digit)

Updated

This is with DateTime

$date = new DateTime('19:24:15 06/13/2013');
echo $date->format('h:i:s a m/d/Y') ;

INSERT INTO @TABLE EXEC @query with SQL Server 2000

N.B. - this question and answer relate to the 2000 version of SQL Server. In later versions, the restriction on INSERT INTO @table_variable ... EXEC ... were lifted and so it doesn't apply for those later versions.

You'll have to switch to a temp table:

CREATE TABLE #tmp (code varchar(50), mount money)
DECLARE @q nvarchar(4000)
SET @q = 'SELECT coa_code, amount FROM T_Ledger_detail'

INSERT INTO  #tmp (code, mount)
EXEC sp_executesql (@q)

SELECT * from #tmp

From the documentation:

A table variable behaves like a local variable. It has a well-defined scope, which is the function, stored procedure, or batch in which it is declared.

Within its scope, a table variable may be used like a regular table. It may be applied anywhere a table or table expression is used in SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements. However, table may not be used in the following statements:

INSERT INTO table_variable EXEC stored_procedure

SELECT select_list INTO table_variable statements.

Deprecated: mysql_connect()

PDO class replaces these methods. Example for Mysql or MariaDB :

$BDD_SQL = new PDO('mysql:host='.BDD_SQL_SERVER.';dbname='.BDD_SQL_BASE.';charset=utf8',
        BDD_SQL_LOGIN, BDD_SQL_PWD,
        array(
          PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
          PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION, //launch exception if error
          PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE=> PDO::FETCH_ASSOC
                ));

Fluid or fixed grid system, in responsive design, based on Twitter Bootstrap

you may use this - https://github.com/chanakyachatterjee/JSLightGrid ..JSLightGrid. have a look.. I found this one really very useful. Good performance, very light weight, all important browser friendly and fluid in itself, so you don't really need bootstrap for the grid.

How do you make div elements display inline?

I just tend to make them fixed widths so that they add up to the total width of the page - probably only works if you are using a fixed width page. Also "float".

Swift GET request with parameters

When building a GET request, there is no body to the request, but rather everything goes on the URL. To build a URL (and properly percent escaping it), you can also use URLComponents.

var url = URLComponents(string: "https://www.google.com/search/")!

url.queryItems = [
    URLQueryItem(name: "q", value: "War & Peace")
]

The only trick is that most web services need + character percent escaped (because they'll interpret that as a space character as dictated by the application/x-www-form-urlencoded specification). But URLComponents will not percent escape it. Apple contends that + is a valid character in a query and therefore shouldn't be escaped. Technically, they are correct, that it is allowed in a query of a URI, but it has a special meaning in application/x-www-form-urlencoded requests and really should not be passed unescaped.

Apple acknowledges that we have to percent escaping the + characters, but advises that we do it manually:

var url = URLComponents(string: "https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/")!

url.queryItems = [
    URLQueryItem(name: "i", value: "1+2")
]

url.percentEncodedQuery = url.percentEncodedQuery?.replacingOccurrences(of: "+", with: "%2B")

This is an inelegant work-around, but it works, and is what Apple advises if your queries may include a + character and you have a server that interprets them as spaces.

So, combining that with your sendRequest routine, you end up with something like:

func sendRequest(_ url: String, parameters: [String: String], completion: @escaping ([String: Any]?, Error?) -> Void) {
    var components = URLComponents(string: url)!
    components.queryItems = parameters.map { (key, value) in
        URLQueryItem(name: key, value: value)
    }
    components.percentEncodedQuery = components.percentEncodedQuery?.replacingOccurrences(of: "+", with: "%2B")
    let request = URLRequest(url: components.url!)

    let task = URLSession.shared.dataTask(with: request) { data, response, error in
        guard let data = data, // is there data
            let response = response as? HTTPURLResponse, // is there HTTP response
            (200 ..< 300) ~= response.statusCode,         // is statusCode 2XX
            error == nil else { // was there no error, otherwise ...
                completion(nil, error)
                return
        }

        let responseObject = (try? JSONSerialization.jsonObject(with: data)) as? [String: Any]
        completion(responseObject, nil)
    }
    task.resume()
}

And you'd call it like:

sendRequest("someurl", parameters: ["foo": "bar"]) { responseObject, error in
    guard let responseObject = responseObject, error == nil else {
        print(error ?? "Unknown error")
        return
    }

    // use `responseObject` here
}

Personally, I'd use JSONDecoder nowadays and return a custom struct rather than a dictionary, but that's not really relevant here. Hopefully this illustrates the basic idea of how to percent encode the parameters into the URL of a GET request.

See previous revision of this answer for Swift 2 and manual percent escaping renditions.

How to execute command stored in a variable?

Unix shells operate a series of transformations on each line of input before executing them. For most shells it looks something like this (taken from the bash manpage):

  • initial word splitting
  • brace expansion
  • tilde expansion
  • parameter, variable and arithmetic expansion
  • command substitution
  • secondary word splitting
  • path expansion (aka globbing)
  • quote removal

Using $cmd directly gets it replaced by your command during the parameter expansion phase, and it then undergoes all following transformations.

Using eval "$cmd" does nothing until the quote removal phase, where $cmd is returned as is, and passed as a parameter to eval, whose function is to run the whole chain again before executing.

So basically, they're the same in most cases, and differ when your command makes use of the transformation steps up to parameter expansion. For example, using brace expansion:

$ cmd="echo foo{bar,baz}"
$ $cmd
foo{bar,baz}
$ eval "$cmd"
foobar foobaz
