How do I install Maven with Yum?

This is what I went through on Amazon/AWS EMR v5. (Adapted from the previous answers), to have Maven and Java8.

sudo wget https://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/dchen/apache-maven/epel-apache-maven.repo -O /etc/yum.repos.d/epel-apache-maven.repo
sudo sed -i s/\$releasever/6/g /etc/yum.repos.d/epel-apache-maven.repo
sudo yum install -y apache-maven
sudo alternatives --config java

pick Java8

sudo alternatives --config javac

Now, if you run:

mvn -version

You should get:

How to rename a single column in a data.frame?

If you know that your dataframe has only one column, you can use: names(trSamp) <- "newname2"

Print DIV content by JQuery

your question doesn't sound as if you even tried it yourself, so i shouldn't even think of answering, but: if a hidden div can't be printed with that one line:

$('SelectorToPrint').printElement();

simply change it to:

$('SelectorToPrint').show().printElement();

which should make it work in all cases.

for the rest, there's no solution. the plugin will open the print-dialog for you where the user has to choose his printer. you simply can't find out if a printer is attached with javascript (and you (almost) can't print without print-dialog - if you're thinking about that).

NOTE:

The $.browser object has been removed in version 1.9.x of jQuery making this library unsupported.

How do I write data to csv file in columns and rows from a list in python?

The provided examples, using csv modules, are great! Besides, you can always simply write to a text file using formatted strings, like the following tentative example:

l = [[1, 2], [2, 3], [4, 5]]

out = open('out.csv', 'w')
for row in l:
    for column in row:
        out.write('%d;' % column)
    out.write('\n')
out.close()

I used ; as separator, because it works best with Excell (one of your requirements).

Hope it helps!

ant build.xml file doesn't exist

If you couldn't find the build.xml file in your project then you have to build it to be able to debug it and get your .apk

you can use this command-line to build:

android update project -p "project full path"

where "Project full path" -- Give your full path of your project location

after this you will find the build.xml then you can debug it.

Applying .gitignore to committed files

After editing .gitignore to match the ignored files, you can do git ls-files -ci --exclude-standard to see the files that are included in the exclude lists; you can then do

  • Linux/MacOS: git ls-files -ci --exclude-standard -z | xargs -0 git rm --cached
  • Windows (PowerShell): git ls-files -ci --exclude-standard | % { git rm --cached "$_" }
  • Windows (cmd.exe): for /F "tokens=*" %a in ('git ls-files -ci --exclude-standard') do @git rm --cached "%a"

to remove them from the repository (without deleting them from disk).

Edit: You can also add this as an alias in your .gitconfig file so you can run it anytime you like. Just add the following line under the [alias] section (modify as needed for Windows or Mac):

apply-gitignore = !git ls-files -ci --exclude-standard -z | xargs -0 git rm --cached

(The -r flag in xargs prevents git rm from running on an empty result and printing out its usage message, but may only be supported by GNU findutils. Other versions of xargs may or may not have a similar option.)

Now you can just type git apply-gitignore in your repo, and it'll do the work for you!

div with dynamic min-height based on browser window height

No hack or js needed. Just apply the following rule to your root element:

min-height: 100%;
height: auto;

It will automatically choose the bigger one from the two as its height, which means if the content is longer than the browser, it will be the height of the content, otherwise, the height of the browser. This is standard css.

Use of "instanceof" in Java

instanceof is a keyword that can be used to test if an object is of a specified type.

Example :

public class MainClass {
    public static void main(String[] a) {

    String s = "Hello";
    int i = 0;
    String g;
    if (s instanceof java.lang.String) {
       // This is going to be printed
       System.out.println("s is a String");
    }
    if (i instanceof Integer) {
       // This is going to be printed as autoboxing will happen (int -> Integer)
       System.out.println("i is an Integer");
    }
    if (g instanceof java.lang.String) {
       // This case is not going to happen because g is not initialized and
       // therefore is null and instanceof returns false for null.
       System.out.println("g is a String");
    }
}

Matplotlib - global legend and title aside subplots

suptitle seems the way to go, but for what it's worth, the figure has a transFigure property that you can use:

fig=figure(1)

.setAttribute("disabled", false); changes editable attribute to false

Just set the property directly: .

eleman.disabled = false;

Should I call Close() or Dispose() for stream objects?

This is an old question, but you can now write using statements without needing to block each one. They will be disposed of in reverse order when the containing block is finished.

using var responseStream = response.GetResponseStream();
using var reader = new StreamReader(responseStream);
using var writer = new StreamWriter(filename);

int chunkSize = 1024;
while (!reader.EndOfStream)
{
    char[] buffer = new char[chunkSize];
    int count = reader.Read(buffer, 0, chunkSize);
    if (count != 0)
    {
        writer.Write(buffer, 0, count);
    }
}

Fixed point vs Floating point number

The term ‘fixed point’ refers to the corresponding manner in which numbers are represented, with a fixed number of digits after, and sometimes before, the decimal point. With floating-point representation, the placement of the decimal point can ‘float’ relative to the significant digits of the number. For example, a fixed-point representation with a uniform decimal point placement convention can represent the numbers 123.45, 1234.56, 12345.67, etc, whereas a floating-point representation could in addition represent 1.234567, 123456.7, 0.00001234567, 1234567000000000, etc.

How do I get the information from a meta tag with JavaScript?

The other answers should probably do the trick, but this one is simpler and does not require jQuery:

document.head.querySelector("[property~=video][content]").content;

The original question used an RDFa tag with a property="" attribute. For the normal HTML <meta name="" …> tags you could use something like:

document.querySelector('meta[name="description"]').content

How can I check if a command exists in a shell script?

The question doesn't specify a shell, so for those using fish (friendly interactive shell):

if command -v foo > /dev/null
  echo exists
else
  echo does not exist
end

For basic POSIX compatibility, we use the -v flag which is an alias for --search or -s.

How can I turn a string into a list in Python?

The list() function [docs] will convert a string into a list of single-character strings.

>>> list('hello')
['h', 'e', 'l', 'l', 'o']

Even without converting them to lists, strings already behave like lists in several ways. For example, you can access individual characters (as single-character strings) using brackets:

>>> s = "hello"
>>> s[1]
'e'
>>> s[4]
'o'

You can also loop over the characters in the string as you can loop over the elements of a list:

>>> for c in 'hello':
...     print c + c,
...
hh ee ll ll oo

How to delete stuff printed to console by System.out.println()?

There are two different ways to clear the terminal in BlueJ. You can get BlueJ to automatically clear the terminal before every interactive method call. To do this, activate the 'Clear screen at method call' option in the 'Options' menu of the terminal. You can also clear the terminal programmatically from within your program. Printing a formfeed character (Unicode 000C) clears the BlueJ terminal, for example:

System.out.print('\u000C');

Applications are expected to have a root view controller at the end of application launch

With my first view being MenuViewController I added:

MenuViewController *menuViewController = [[MenuViewController alloc]init];
self.window.rootViewController = menuViewController;

}

That worked.

Callback function for JSONP with jQuery AJAX

$.ajax({
        url: 'http://url.of.my.server/submit',
        dataType: "jsonp",
        jsonp: 'callback',
        jsonpCallback: 'jsonp_callback'
    });

jsonp is the querystring parameter name that is defined to be acceptable by the server while the jsonpCallback is the javascript function name to be executed at the client.
When you use such url:

url: 'http://url.of.my.server/submit?callback=?'

the question mark ? at the end instructs jQuery to generate a random function while the predfined behavior of the autogenerated function will just invoke the callback -the sucess function in this case- passing the json data as a parameter.

$.ajax({
        url: 'http://url.of.my.server/submit?callback=?',
        success: function (data, status) {
            mySurvey.closePopup();
        },
        error: function (xOptions, textStatus) {
            mySurvey.closePopup();
        }
    });

The same goes here if you are using $.getJSON with ? placeholder it will generate a random function while the predfined behavior of the autogenerated function will just invoke the callback:

$.getJSON('http://url.of.my.server/submit?callback=?',function(data){
//process data here
});

Why can't I use the 'await' operator within the body of a lock statement?

Hmm, looks ugly, seems to work.

                resetEvent.Reset();

                return new ExitDisposable(obj) as IDisposable;
            });
    }

    private static readonly IDictionary<object, WeakReference> ResetEventMap =
        new Dictionary<object, WeakReference>();

    private static ManualResetEvent ResetEventFor(object @lock)

        if (!ResetEventMap.ContainsKey(@lock) ||
            !ResetEventMap[@lock].IsAlive)
        {
            ResetEventMap[@lock] =
                new WeakReference(new ManualResetEvent(true));
        }

        return ResetEventMap[@lock].Target as ManualResetEvent;
    }

    private static void CleanUp()
    {
        ResetEventMap.Where(kv => !kv.Value.IsAlive)
                     .ToList()
                     .ForEach(kv => ResetEventMap.Remove(kv));
    }

    private class ExitDisposable : IDisposable
    {
        private readonly object _lock;

        public ExitDisposable(object @lock)
        {
            _lock = @lock;
        }

        public void Dispose()
        {
            ResetEventFor(_lock).Set();
        }

Converting a factor to numeric without losing information R (as.numeric() doesn't seem to work)

First, factor consists of indices and levels. This fact is very very important when you are struggling with factor.

For example,

> z <- factor(letters[c(3, 2, 3, 4)])

# human-friendly display, but internal structure is invisible
> z
[1] c b c d
Levels: b c d

# internal structure of factor
> unclass(z)
[1] 2 1 2 3
attr(,"levels")
[1] "b" "c" "d"

here, z has 4 elements.
The index is 2, 1, 2, 3 in that order.
The level is associated with each index: 1 -> b, 2 -> c, 3 -> d.

Then, as.numeric converts simply the index part of factor into numeric.
as.character handles the index and levels, and generates character vector expressed by its level.

?as.numeric says that Factors are handled by the default method.

Maximum size of a varchar(max) variable

As far as I can tell there is no upper limit in 2008.

In SQL Server 2005 the code in your question fails on the assignment to the @GGMMsg variable with

Attempting to grow LOB beyond maximum allowed size of 2,147,483,647 bytes.

the code below fails with

REPLICATE: The length of the result exceeds the length limit (2GB) of the target large type.

However it appears these limitations have quietly been lifted. On 2008

DECLARE @y VARCHAR(MAX) = REPLICATE(CAST('X' AS VARCHAR(MAX)),92681);

SET @y = REPLICATE(@y,92681);

SELECT LEN(@y)

Returns

8589767761

I ran this on my 32 bit desktop machine so this 8GB string is way in excess of addressable memory

Running

select internal_objects_alloc_page_count
from sys.dm_db_task_space_usage
WHERE session_id = @@spid

Returned

internal_objects_alloc_page_co
------------------------------
2144456

so I presume this all just gets stored in LOB pages in tempdb with no validation on length. The page count growth was all associated with the SET @y = REPLICATE(@y,92681); statement. The initial variable assignment to @y and the LEN calculation did not increase this.

The reason for mentioning this is because the page count is hugely more than I was expecting. Assuming an 8KB page then this works out at 16.36 GB which is obviously more or less double what would seem to be necessary. I speculate that this is likely due to the inefficiency of the string concatenation operation needing to copy the entire huge string and append a chunk on to the end rather than being able to add to the end of the existing string. Unfortunately at the moment the .WRITE method isn't supported for varchar(max) variables.

Addition

I've also tested the behaviour with concatenating nvarchar(max) + nvarchar(max) and nvarchar(max) + varchar(max). Both of these allow the 2GB limit to be exceeded. Trying to then store the results of this in a table then fails however with the error message Attempting to grow LOB beyond maximum allowed size of 2147483647 bytes. again. The script for that is below (may take a long time to run).

DECLARE @y1 VARCHAR(MAX) = REPLICATE(CAST('X' AS VARCHAR(MAX)),2147483647);
SET @y1 = @y1 + @y1;
SELECT LEN(@y1), DATALENGTH(@y1)  /*4294967294, 4294967292*/

DECLARE @y2 NVARCHAR(MAX) = REPLICATE(CAST('X' AS NVARCHAR(MAX)),1073741823);
SET @y2 = @y2 + @y2;
SELECT LEN(@y2), DATALENGTH(@y2)  /*2147483646, 4294967292*/

DECLARE @y3 NVARCHAR(MAX) = @y2 + @y1
SELECT LEN(@y3), DATALENGTH(@y3)   /*6442450940, 12884901880*/

/*This attempt fails*/

How to trigger an event after using event.preventDefault()

A more recent version of the accepted answer.

Brief version:

$('#form').on('submit', function(e, options) {
    options = options || {};

    if ( !options.lots_of_stuff_done ) {
        e.preventDefault();
        $.ajax({
            /* do lots of stuff */
        }).then(function() {
            // retrigger the submit event with lots_of_stuff_done set to true
            $(e.currentTarget).trigger('submit', { 'lots_of_stuff_done': true });
        });
    } else {
        /* allow default behavior to happen */
    }

});

A good use case for something like this is where you may have some legacy form code that works, but you've been asked to enhance the form by adding something like email address validation before submitting the form. Instead of digging through the back-end form post code, you could write an API and then update your front-end code to hit that API first before allowing the form to do it's traditional POST.

To do that, you can implement code similar to what I've written here:

$('#signup_form').on('submit', function(e, options) {
    options = options || {};

    if ( !options.email_check_complete ) {

        e.preventDefault(); // Prevent form from submitting.
        $.ajax({
            url: '/api/check_email'
            type: 'get',
            contentType: 'application/json',
            data: {
                'email_address': $('email').val()
            }
        })
        .then(function() {
            // e.type === 'submit', if you want this to be more dynamic
            $(e.currentTarget).trigger(e.type, { 'email_check_complete': true });
        })
        .fail(function() {
            alert('Email address is not valid. Please fix and try again.');
        })

    } else {

        /**
             Do traditional <form> post.
             This code will be hit on the second pass through this handler because
             the 'email_check_complete' option was passed in with the event.
         */

        $('#notifications').html('Saving your personal settings...').fadeIn();

    }

});

Add custom headers to WebView resource requests - android

As mentioned before, you can do this:

 WebView  host = (WebView)this.findViewById(R.id.webView);
 String url = "<yoururladdress>";

 Map <String, String> extraHeaders = new HashMap<String, String>();
 extraHeaders.put("Authorization","Bearer");
 host.loadUrl(url,extraHeaders);

I tested this and on with a MVC Controller that I extended the Authorize Attribute to inspect the header and the header is there.

Not able to access adb in OS X through Terminal, "command not found"

The problem is: adb is not in your PATH. This is where the shell looks for executables. You can check your current PATH with echo $PATH.

Bash will first try to look for a binary called adb in your Path, and not in the current directory. Therefore, if you are currently in the platform-tools directory, just call

./adb --help

The dot is your current directory, and this tells Bash to use adb from there.

But actually, you should add platform-tools to your PATH, as well as some other tools that the Android SDK comes with. This is how you do it:

  1. Find out where you installed the Android SDK. This might be (where $HOME is your user's home directory) one of the following (or verify via Configure > SDK Manager in the Android Studio startup screen):

    • Linux: $HOME/Android/Sdk
    • macOS: $HOME/Library/Android/sdk
  2. Find out which shell profile to edit, depending on which file is used:

    • Linux: typically $HOME/.bashrc
    • macOS: typically $HOME/.bash_profile
    • With Zsh: $HOME/.zshrc
  3. Open the shell profile from step two, and at the bottom of the file, add the following lines. Make sure to replace the path with the one where you installed platform-tools if it differs:

    export ANDROID_HOME="$HOME/Android/Sdk"
    export PATH="$ANDROID_HOME/tools:$ANDROID_HOME/tools/bin:$ANDROID_HOME/platform-tools:$PATH"

  4. Save the profile file, then, re-start the terminal or run source ~/.bashrc (or whatever you just modified).

Note that setting ANDROID_HOME is required for some third party frameworks, so it does not hurt to add it.

How can I create a Java method that accepts a variable number of arguments?

This is known as varargs see the link here for more details

In past java releases, a method that took an arbitrary number of values required you to create an array and put the values into the array prior to invoking the method. For example, here is how one used the MessageFormat class to format a message:

Object[] arguments = {
    new Integer(7),
    new Date(),
    "a disturbance in the Force"
};
    String result = MessageFormat.format(
        "At {1,time} on {1,date}, there was {2} on planet "
         + "{0,number,integer}.", arguments);

It is still true that multiple arguments must be passed in an array, but the varargs feature automates and hides the process. Furthermore, it is upward compatible with preexisting APIs. So, for example, the MessageFormat.format method now has this declaration:

public static String format(String pattern,
                            Object... arguments);

How to create a XML object from String in Java?

If you can create a string xml you can easily transform it to the xml document object e.g. -

String xmlString = "<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"utf-8\"?><a><b></b><c></c></a>";

DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
DocumentBuilder builder;
try {
    builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
    Document document = builder.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(xmlString)));
} catch (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
}

You can use the document object and xml parsing libraries or xpath to get back the ip address.

If you want to compare two databases, use the procedure 'CompareDatabases'. Example :

EXEC master.dbo.CompareDatabases 'DB1', 'DB2'

Note : - I tried to make the procedures secure, but anyway, those procedures are only for testing and debugging. - If you want a complete solution for comparison use third party like (Visual Studio, ...)

How to change MySQL timezone in a database connection using Java?

useTimezone is an older workaround. MySQL team rewrote the setTimestamp/getTimestamp code fairly recently, but it will only be enabled if you set the connection parameter useLegacyDatetimeCode=false and you're using the latest version of mysql JDBC connector. So for example:

String url =
 "jdbc:mysql://localhost/mydb?useLegacyDatetimeCode=false

If you download the mysql-connector source code and look at setTimestamp, it's very easy to see what's happening:

If use legacy date time code = false, newSetTimestampInternal(...) is called. Then, if the Calendar passed to newSetTimestampInternal is NULL, your date object is formatted in the database's time zone:

this.tsdf = new SimpleDateFormat("''yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss", Locale.US);
this.tsdf.setTimeZone(this.connection.getServerTimezoneTZ());
timestampString = this.tsdf.format(x);

It's very important that Calendar is null - so make sure you're using:

setTimestamp(int,Timestamp).

... NOT setTimestamp(int,Timestamp,Calendar).

It should be obvious now how this works. If you construct a date: January 5, 2011 3:00 AM in America/Los_Angeles (or whatever time zone you want) using java.util.Calendar and call setTimestamp(1, myDate), then it will take your date, use SimpleDateFormat to format it in the database time zone. So if your DB is in America/New_York, it will construct the String '2011-01-05 6:00:00' to be inserted (since NY is ahead of LA by 3 hours).

To retrieve the date, use getTimestamp(int) (without the Calendar). Once again it will use the database time zone to build a date.

Note: The webserver time zone is completely irrelevant now! If you don't set useLegacyDatetimecode to false, the webserver time zone is used for formatting - adding lots of confusion.

Note:

It's possible MySQL my complain that the server time zone is ambiguous. For example, if your database is set to use EST, there might be several possible EST time zones in Java, so you can clarify this for mysql-connector by telling it exactly what the database time zone is:

String url =
 "jdbc:mysql://localhost/mydb?useLegacyDatetimeCode=false&serverTimezone=America/New_York";

You only need to do this if it complains.

Warning: mysqli_error() expects exactly 1 parameter, 0 given error

At first, the problem is because you did't put any parameter for mysqli_error. I can see that it has been solved based on the post here. Most probably, the next problem is cause by wrong file path for the included file.. .

Are you sure this code

$myConnection = mysqli_connect("$db_host","$db_username","$db_pass","$db_name") or die ("could not connect to mysql");

is in the 'scripts' folder and your main code file is on the same level as the script folder?

Str_replace for multiple items

str_replace() can take an array, so you could do:

$new_str = str_replace(str_split('\\/:*?"<>|'), ' ', $string);

Alternatively you could use preg_replace():

$new_str = preg_replace('~[\\\\/:*?"<>|]~', ' ', $string);

Maximum and Minimum values for ints

In Python integers will automatically switch from a fixed-size int representation into a variable width long representation once you pass the value sys.maxint, which is either 231 - 1 or 263 - 1 depending on your platform. Notice the L that gets appended here:

>>> 9223372036854775807
9223372036854775807
>>> 9223372036854775808
9223372036854775808L

From the Python manual:

Numbers are created by numeric literals or as the result of built-in functions and operators. Unadorned integer literals (including binary, hex, and octal numbers) yield plain integers unless the value they denote is too large to be represented as a plain integer, in which case they yield a long integer. Integer literals with an 'L' or 'l' suffix yield long integers ('L' is preferred because 1l looks too much like eleven!).

Python tries very hard to pretend its integers are mathematical integers and are unbounded. It can, for instance, calculate a googol with ease:

>>> 10**100
10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000L

'xmlParseEntityRef: no name' warnings while loading xml into a php file

PROBLEM

  • PHP function simplexml_load_file is throwing parsing error parser error : xmlParseEntityRef while trying to load the XML file from a URL.

CAUSE

  • XML returned by the URL is not a valid XML. It contains & value instead of &amp;. It is quite possible that there are other errors which aren't obvious at this point of time.

THINGS OUT OF OUR CONTROL

  • Ideally, we should make sure that a valid XML is feed into PHP simplexml_load_file function, but it looks like we don't have any control over how the XML is created.
  • It is also not possible to force simplexml_load_file to process an invalid XML file. It does not leave us with many options, other than fixing the XML file itself.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Convert Invalid XML to Valid XML. It can be done using PHP tidy extension. Further instructions can be found from http://php.net/manual/en/book.tidy.php

Once you are sure that the extension exists or is installed, please do the following.

/**
 * As per the question asked, the URL is loaded into a variable first,
 * which we can assume to be $xml
 */
$xml = <<<XML
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<project orderno="6" campaign_name="International Relief & Development for under developed nations">
    <invalid-data>Some other data containing & in it</invalid-data>
    <unclosed-tag>
</project>
XML;

/**
 * Whenever we use tidy it is best to pass some configuration options
 * similar to $tidyConfig. In this particular case we are making sure that
 * tidy understands that our input and output is XML.
 */
$tidyConfig = array (
    'indent' => true,
    'input-xml' => true,
    'output-xml' => true,
    'wrap' => 200
);

/**
 * Now we can use tidy to parse the string and then repair it.
 */
$tidy = new tidy;
$tidy->parseString($xml, $tidyConfig, 'utf8');
$tidy->cleanRepair();

/**
 * If we try to output the repaired XML string by echoing $tidy it should look like.

 <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
 <project orderno="6" campaign_name="International Relief &amp; Development for under developed nations">
      <invalid-data>Some other data containing &amp; in it</invalid-data>
      <unclosed-tag></unclosed-tag>
 </project>

 * As you can see that & is now fixed in campaign_name attribute
 * and also with-in invalid-data element. You can also see that the
 * <unclosed-tag> which didn't had a close tag, has been fixed too.
 */
echo $tidy;

/**
 * Now when we try to use simplexml_load_string to load the clean XML. When we
 * try to print_r it should look something like below.

 SimpleXMLElement Object
(
    [@attributes] => Array
        (
            [orderno] => 6
            [campaign_name] => International Relief & Development for under developed nations
        )

    [invalid-data] => Some other data containing & in it
    [unclosed-tag] => SimpleXMLElement Object
        (
        )

)

 */
 $simpleXmlElement = simplexml_load_string($tidy);
 print_r($simpleXmlElement);

CAUTION

The developer should try to compare the invalid XML with a valid XML (generated by tidy), to see there are no adverse side effects after using tidy. Tidy does an extremely good job of doing it correctly, but it never hurts to see it visually and to be 100% sure. In our case it should be as simple as comparing $xml with $tidy.

Notepad++ incrementally replace

http://docs.notepad-plus-plus.org/index.php/Inserting_Variable_Text

Notepad++ comes equipped with a Edit -> Column "Alt+C" Editor which can work on a rectangular selection in two different ways: Coledit.png inserting some fixed text on every line including and following the current line, at the column of the insertion point (aka caret). Initially selected text is left untouched. As the picture illustrates, a linear series of numbers can be inserted in the same manner. The starting value and increment are to be provided. Left padding with zeroes is an option, and the number may be entered in base 2, 8, 10 or 16 - this is how the computed values will be displayed too, padding being based on the largest.

Store an array in HashMap

If you want to store multiple values for a key (if I understand you correctly), you could try a MultiHashMap (available in various libraries, not only commons-collections).

How do I get SUM function in MySQL to return '0' if no values are found?

Use IFNULL or COALESCE:

SELECT IFNULL(SUM(Column1), 0) AS total FROM...

SELECT COALESCE(SUM(Column1), 0) AS total FROM...

The difference between them is that IFNULL is a MySQL extension that takes two arguments, and COALESCE is a standard SQL function that can take one or more arguments. When you only have two arguments using IFNULL is slightly faster, though here the difference is insignificant since it is only called once.

How to prevent page scrolling when scrolling a DIV element?

I needed to add this event to multiple elements that might have a scrollbar. For the cases where no scrollbar was present, the main scrollbar didn't work as it should. So i made a small change to @Šime code as follows:

$( '.scrollable' ).on( 'mousewheel DOMMouseScroll', function ( e ) {
    if($(this).prop('scrollHeight') > $(this).height())
    {
        var e0 = e.originalEvent, delta = e0.wheelDelta || -e0.detail;

        this.scrollTop += ( delta < 0 ? 1 : -1 ) * 30;
        e.preventDefault();
    }
});

Now, only elements with a scrollbar will prevent the main scroll from begin stopped.

Display open transactions in MySQL

How can I display these open transactions and commit or cancel them?

There is no open transaction, MySQL will rollback the transaction upon disconnect.
You cannot commit the transaction (IFAIK).

You display threads using

SHOW FULL PROCESSLIST

See: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/thread-information.html

It will not help you, because you cannot commit a transaction from a broken connection.

What happens when a connection breaks
From the MySQL docs: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-tips.html

4.5.1.6.3. Disabling mysql Auto-Reconnect

If the mysql client loses its connection to the server while sending a statement, it immediately and automatically tries to reconnect once to the server and send the statement again. However, even if mysql succeeds in reconnecting, your first connection has ended and all your previous session objects and settings are lost: temporary tables, the autocommit mode, and user-defined and session variables. Also, any current transaction rolls back.

This behavior may be dangerous for you, as in the following example where the server was shut down and restarted between the first and second statements without you knowing it:

Also see: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/auto-reconnect.html

How to diagnose and fix this
To check for auto-reconnection:

If an automatic reconnection does occur (for example, as a result of calling mysql_ping()), there is no explicit indication of it. To check for reconnection, call mysql_thread_id() to get the original connection identifier before calling mysql_ping(), then call mysql_thread_id() again to see whether the identifier has changed.

Make sure you keep your last query (transaction) in the client so that you can resubmit it if need be.
And disable auto-reconnect mode, because that is dangerous, implement your own reconnect instead, so that you know when a drop occurs and you can resubmit that query.

Purpose of Activator.CreateInstance with example?

Building off of deepee1 and this, here's how to accept a class name in a string, and then use it to read and write to a database with LINQ. I use "dynamic" instead of deepee1's casting because it allows me to assign properties, which allows us to dynamically select and operate on any table we want.

Type tableType = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetType("NameSpace.TableName");
ITable itable = dbcontext.GetTable(tableType);

//prints contents of the table
foreach (object y in itable) {
    string value = (string)y.GetType().GetProperty("ColumnName").GetValue(y, null);
    Console.WriteLine(value);
}

//inserting into a table
dynamic tableClass = Activator.CreateInstance(tableType);
//Alternative to using tableType, using Tony's tips
dynamic tableClass = Activator.CreateInstance(null, "NameSpace.TableName").Unwrap();
tableClass.Word = userParameter;
itable.InsertOnSubmit(tableClass);
dbcontext.SubmitChanges();

//sql equivalent
dbcontext.ExecuteCommand("INSERT INTO [TableNme]([ColumnName]) VALUES ({0})", userParameter);

What is the purpose of Looper and how to use it?

What is Looper?

Looper is a class which is used to execute the Messages(Runnables) in a queue. Normal threads have no such queue, e.g. simple thread does not have any queue. It executes once and after method execution finishes, the thread will not run another Message(Runnable).

Where we can use Looper class?

If someone wants to execute multiple messages(Runnables) then he should use the Looper class which is responsible for creating a queue in the thread. For example, while writing an application that downloads files from the internet, we can use Looper class to put files to be downloaded in the queue.

How it works?

There is prepare() method to prepare the Looper. Then you can use loop() method to create a message loop in the current thread and now your Looper is ready to execute the requests in the queue until you quit the loop.

Here is the code by which you can prepare the Looper.

class LooperThread extends Thread {
      public Handler mHandler;

      @Override
      public void run() {
          Looper.prepare();

          mHandler = new Handler() {
              @Override
              public void handleMessage(Message msg) {
                  // process incoming messages here
              }
          };

          Looper.loop();
      }
  }

Ignore <br> with CSS?

You can use span elements instead of the br if you want the white space method to work, as it depends on pseudo-elements which are "not defined" for replaced elements.

HTML

<p>
   To break lines<span class="line-break">in a paragraph,</span><span>don't use</span><span>the 'br' element.</span>
</p>

CSS

span {white-space: pre;}

span:after {content: ' ';}

span.line-break {display: block;}

span.line-break:after {content: none;}

DEMO

The line break is simply achieved by setting the appropriate span element to display:block.

By using IDs and/ or Classes in your HTML markup you can easily target every single or combination of span elements by CSS or use CSS selectors like nth-child().

So you can e.g. define different break points by using media queries for a responsive layout.

And you can also simply add/ remove/ toggle classes by Javascript (jQuery).

The "advantage" of this method is its robustness - works in every browser that supports pseudo-elements (see: Can I use - CSS Generated content).

As an alternative it is also possible to add a line break via pseudo-elements:

span.break:before {
    content: "\A";
    white-space: pre;
}

Switch case in C# - a constant value is expected

Now you can use nameof:

public static void Output<T>(IEnumerable<T> dataSource) where T : class
{
    string dataSourceName = typeof(T).Name;
    switch (dataSourceName)
    {
        case nameof(CustomerDetails):
            var t = 123;
            break;
        default:
            Console.WriteLine("Test");
    }
}

nameof(CustomerDetails) is basically identical to the string literal "CustomerDetails", but with a compile-time check that it refers to some symbol (to prevent a typo).

nameof appeared in C# 6.0, so after this question was asked.

What does "./" (dot slash) refer to in terms of an HTML file path location?

.  = This location
.. = Up a directory

So, ./foo.html is just foo.html. And it is optional, but may have relevance if a script generated the path (relevance to the script that is, not how the reference works).

Combining Two Images with OpenCV

For those who are looking to combine 2 color images into one, this is a slight mod on Andrey's answer which worked for me :

img2 = cv2.imread(imageFile2)

h1, w1 = img1.shape[:2]
h2, w2 = img2.shape[:2]

#create empty matrix
vis = np.zeros((max(h1, h2), w1+w2,3), np.uint8)

#combine 2 images
vis[:h1, :w1,:3] = img1
vis[:h2, w1:w1+w2,:3] = img2

Java, "Variable name" cannot be resolved to a variable

I've noticed bizarre behavior with Eclipse version 4.2.1 delivering me this error:

String cannot be resolved to a variable

With this Java code:

if (true)
    String my_variable = "somevalue";
    System.out.println("foobar");

You would think this code is very straight forward, the conditional is true, we set my_variable to somevalue. And it should print foobar. Right?

Wrong, you get the above mentioned compile time error. Eclipse is trying to prevent you from making a mistake by assuming that both statements are within the if statement.

If you put braces around the conditional block like this:

if (true){
    String my_variable = "somevalue"; }
    System.out.println("foobar");

Then it compiles and runs fine. Apparently poorly bracketed conditionals are fair game for generating compile time errors now.

Format a datetime into a string with milliseconds

I assume you mean you're looking for something that is faster than datetime.datetime.strftime(), and are essentially stripping the non-alpha characters from a utc timestamp.

You're approach is marginally faster, and I think you can speed things up even more by slicing the string:

>>> import timeit
>>> t=timeit.Timer('datetime.utcnow().strftime("%Y%m%d%H%M%S%f")','''
... from datetime import datetime''')
>>> t.timeit(number=10000000)
116.15451288223267

>>> def replaceutc(s):
...     return s\
...         .replace('-','') \
...         .replace(':','') \
...         .replace('.','') \
...         .replace(' ','') \
...         .strip()
...
>>> t=timeit.Timer('replaceutc(str(datetime.datetime.utcnow()))','''
... from __main__ import replaceutc

PDF files do not open in Internet Explorer with Adobe Reader 10.0 - users get an empty gray screen. How can I fix this for my users?

Hm, would it be possible to simply do this:

The first time your user opens a pdf, using Javascript you make a popout that basically says "If you cannot see your document, please click HERE". Make "HERE" a big button where it will explain to your user what's the problem. Also make another button "everything's fine". If the user clicks on this one, you remember it, so it isn't displayed in the future.

I'm trying to be practical. Going to great lengths trying to solve this kind of problem "properly" for a small subset of Adobe Reader versions doesn't sound very productive to me.

OpenSSL: unable to verify the first certificate for Experian URL

Here is what you can do:-

Exim SSL certificates

By default, the /etc/exim.conf will use the cert/key files:

/etc/exim.cert
/etc/exim.key

so if you're wondering where to set your files, that's where.

They're controlled by the exim.conf's options:

tls_certificate = /etc/exim.cert
tls_privatekey = /etc/exim.key

Intermediate Certificates

If you have a CA Root certificate (ca bundle, chain, etc.) you'll add the contents of your CA into the exim.cert, after your actual certificate.

Probably a good idea to make sure you have a copy of everything elsewhere in case you make an error.

Dovecot and ProFtpd should also read it correctly, so dovecot no longer needs the ssl_ca option. So for both cases, there is no need to make any changes to either the exim.conf or dovecot.conf(/etc/dovecot/conf/ssl.conf)

Converting Numpy Array to OpenCV Array

This is what worked for me...

import cv2
import numpy as np

#Created an image (really an ndarray) with three channels
new_image = np.ndarray((3, num_rows, num_cols), dtype=int)

#Did manipulations for my project where my array values went way over 255
#Eventually returned numbers to between 0 and 255

#Converted the datatype to np.uint8
new_image = new_image.astype(np.uint8)

#Separated the channels in my new image
new_image_red, new_image_green, new_image_blue = new_image

#Stacked the channels
new_rgb = np.dstack([new_image_red, new_image_green, new_image_blue])

#Displayed the image
cv2.imshow("WindowNameHere", new_rgbrgb)
cv2.waitKey(0)

ImportError: No module named - Python

Your modification of sys.path assumes the current working directory is always in main/. This is not the case. Instead, just add the parent directory to sys.path:

import sys
import os.path

sys.path.append(os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), '..'))
import gen_py.lib

Don't forget to include a file __init__.py in gen_py and lib - otherwise, they won't be recognized as Python modules.

Setting timezone to UTC (0) in PHP

The problem is that you're displaying time(), which is a UNIX timestamp based on GMT/UTC. That’s why it doesn’t change. date() on the other hand, formats the time based on that timestamp.

A timestamp is the number of seconds since the Unix Epoch (January 1 1970 00:00:00 GMT).

echo date('Y-m-d H:i:s T', time()) . "<br>\n";
date_default_timezone_set('UTC');
echo date('Y-m-d H:i:s T', time()) . "<br>\n";

Best way to convert string to bytes in Python 3?

It's easier than it is thought:

my_str = "hello world"
my_str_as_bytes = str.encode(my_str)

my_decoded_str = my_str_as_bytes.decode()
type(my_decoded_str) # ensure it is string representation

You could open the file in binary mode:

# ...
for line in wordlistfile:
    if hashlib.md5(line.rstrip(b'\n\r')).hexdigest() == control_hash:
       # collision

Accessing JPEG EXIF rotation data in JavaScript on the client side

If you only want the orientation tag and nothing else and don't like to include another huge javascript library I wrote a little code that extracts the orientation tag as fast as possible (It uses DataView and readAsArrayBuffer which are available in IE10+, but you can write your own data reader for older browsers):

For those using Typescript, you can use the following code:

export const getOrientation = (file: File, callback: Function) => {
  var reader = new FileReader();

  reader.onload = (event: ProgressEvent) => {

    if (! event.target) {
      return;
    }

    const file = event.target as FileReader;
    const view = new DataView(file.result as ArrayBuffer);

    if (view.getUint16(0, false) != 0xFFD8) {
        return callback(-2);
    }

    const length = view.byteLength
    let offset = 2;

    while (offset < length)
    {
        if (view.getUint16(offset+2, false) <= 8) return callback(-1);
        let marker = view.getUint16(offset, false);
        offset += 2;

        if (marker == 0xFFE1) {
          if (view.getUint32(offset += 2, false) != 0x45786966) {
            return callback(-1);
          }

          let little = view.getUint16(offset += 6, false) == 0x4949;
          offset += view.getUint32(offset + 4, little);
          let tags = view.getUint16(offset, little);

Qt. get part of QString

Use the left function:

QString yourString = "This is a string";
QString leftSide = yourString.left(5);
qDebug() << leftSide; // output "This "

Also have a look at mid() if you want more control.

Python print statement “Syntax Error: invalid syntax”

Use print("use this bracket -sample text")

In Python 3 print "Hello world" gives invalid syntax error.

To display string content in Python3 have to use this ("Hello world") brackets.

How to convert a .eps file to a high quality 1024x1024 .jpg?

For vector graphics, ImageMagick has both a render resolution and an output size that are independent of each other.

Try something like

convert -density 300 image.eps -resize 1024x1024 image.jpg

Which will render your eps at 300dpi. If 300 * width > 1024, then it will be sharp. If you render it too high though, you waste a lot of memory drawing a really high-res graphic only to down sample it again. I don't currently know of a good way to render it at the "right" resolution in one IM command.

The order of the arguments matters! The -density X argument needs to go before image.eps because you want to affect the resolution that the input file is rendered at.

This is not super obvious in the manpage for convert, but is hinted at:

convert [input-option] input-file [output-option] output-file

Issue using $_POST with a textarea

Using generic std::function objects with member functions in one class

If you need to store a member function without the class instance, you can do something like this:

class MyClass
{
public:
    void MemberFunc(int value)
    {
      //do something
    }
};

// Store member function binding
auto callable = std::mem_fn(&MyClass::MemberFunc);

// Call with late supplied 'this'
MyClass myInst;
callable(&myInst, 123);

What would the storage type look like without auto? Something like this:

std::_Mem_fn_wrap<void,void (__cdecl TestA::*)(int),TestA,int> callable

You can also pass this function storage to a standard function binding

std::function<void(int)> binding = std::bind(callable, &testA, std::placeholders::_1);
binding(123); // Call

Past and future notes: An older interface std::mem_func existed, but has since been deprecated. A proposal exists, post C++17, to make pointer to member functions callable. This would be most welcome.

Force youtube embed to start in 720p

(This answer was updated, as the previous method using vq isn't recognized anymore.)

Specifying the height of the video will change the quality accordingly. example for html 5;

<iframe style='width:100%; height:800px;' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/xxxxxxxx'></iframe>

If you don't want to hardcode the width and height you can add a class to the iframe for css media queries.

Tested on a working server + passes the w3.org nuhtml validator.

Getting Chrome to accept self-signed localhost certificate

On the Mac, you can create a certificate that's fully trusted by Chrome and Safari at the system level by doing the following:

    # create a root authority cert
    ./create_root_cert_and_key.sh

    # create a wildcard cert for mysite.com
    ./create_certificate_for_domain.sh mysite.com

    # or create a cert for www.mysite.com, no wildcards
    ./create_certificate_for_domain.sh www.mysite.com www.mysite.com

The above uses the following scripts, and a supporting file v3.ext, to avoid subject alternative name missing errors

If you want to create a new self signed cert that's fully trusted using your own root authority, you can do it using these scripts.

create_root_cert_and_key.sh

    #!/usr/bin/env bash
    openssl genrsa -out rootCA.key 2048
    openssl req -x509 -new -nodes -key rootCA.key -sha256 -days 1024 -out rootCA.pem

create_certificate_for_domain.sh

    #!/usr/bin/env bash

    if [ -z "$1" ]
    then
      echo "Please supply a subdomain to create a certificate for";
      echo "e.g. www.mysite.com"
      exit;
    fi

    if [ ! -f rootCA.pem ]; then
      echo 'Please run "create_root_cert_and_key.sh" first, and try again!'
      exit;
    fi
    if [ ! -f v3.ext ]; then
      echo 'Please download the "v3.ext" file and try again!'
      exit;
    fi

    # Create a new private key if one doesnt exist, or use the xeisting one if it does

One more step - How to make the self signed certs fully trusted in Chrome/Safari

To allow the self signed certificates to be FULLY trusted in Chrome and Safari, you need to import a new certificate authority into your Mac. To do so follow these instructions, or the more detailed instructions on this general process on the mitmproxy website:

You can do this one of 2 ways, at the command line, using this command which will prompt you for your password:

$ sudo security add-trusted-cert -d -r trustRoot -k /Library/Keychains/System.keychain rootCA.pem

or by using the Keychain Access app:

  1. Open Keychain Access
  2. Choose "System" in the "Keychains" list
  3. Choose "Certificates" in the "Category" list
  4. Choose "File | Import Items..."
  5. Browse to the file created above, "rootCA.pem", select it, and click "Open"
  6. Select your newly imported certificate in the "Certificates" list.
  7. Click the "i" button, or right click on your certificate, and choose "Get Info"
  8. Expand the "Trust" option
  9. Change "When using this certificate" to "Always Trust"
  10. Close the dialog, and you'll be prompted for your password.
  11. Close and reopen any tabs that are using your target domain, and it'll be loaded securely!

and as a bonus, if you need java clients to trust the certificates, you can do so by importing your certs into the java keystore. Note this will remove the cert from the keystore if it already exists, as it needs to update it in case things change. It of course only does this for the certs being imported.

import_certs_in_current_folder_into_java_keystore.sh

KEYSTORE="$(/usr/libexec/java_home)/jre/lib/security/cacerts";

function running_as_root()
{
  if [ "$EUID" -ne 0 ]
    then echo "NO"
    exit
  fi

  echo "YES"
}

function import_certs_to_java_keystore
{
  for crt in *.crt; do
    echo prepping $crt
    keytool -delete -storepass changeit -alias alias__${crt} -keystore $KEYSTORE;
    keytool -import -file $crt -storepass changeit -noprompt --alias alias__${crt} -keystore $KEYSTORE
    echo
  done
}

if [ "$(running_as_root)" == "YES" ]
then
  import_certs_to_java_keystore
else
  echo "This script needs to be run as root!"
fi

Why use the params keyword?

It allows you to add as many base type parameters in your call as you like.

addTwoEach(10, 2, 4, 6)

whereas with the second form you have to use an array as parameter

addTwoEach(new int[] {10,2,4,6})

Retrieving data from a POST method in ASP.NET

You can get a form value posted to a page using code similiar to this (C#) -

string formValue;
if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(Request.Form["txtFormValue"]))
{
  formValue= Request.Form["txtFormValue"];
}

or this (VB)

Dim formValue As String
If Not String.IsNullOrEmpty(Request.Form("txtFormValue")) Then
    formValue = Request.Form("txtFormValue")
End If

Once you have the values you need you can then construct a SQL statement and and write the data to a database.

How to set JVM parameters for Junit Unit Tests?

You can use systemPropertyVariables (java.protocol.handler.pkgs is your JVM argument name):

    <version>2.12.4</version>

How to check whether a string is a valid HTTP URL?

Try this to validate HTTP URLs (uriName is the URI you want to test):

Uri uriResult;
bool result = Uri.TryCreate(uriName, UriKind.Absolute, out uriResult)
    && uriResult.Scheme == Uri.UriSchemeHttp;

Or, if you want to accept both HTTP and HTTPS URLs as valid (per J0e3gan's comment):

Uri uriResult;
bool result = Uri.TryCreate(uriName, UriKind.Absolute, out uriResult)
    && (uriResult.Scheme == Uri.UriSchemeHttp || uriResult.Scheme == Uri.UriSchemeHttps);

Problem in running .net framework 4.0 website on iis 7.0

If you look in the ISAPI And CGI Restrictions, and everything is already set to Allowed, then make sure that the ASP.NET v4.0.30319 handlers are even in the list. In my case they were not. This can be easy to overlook.

I added one for 32 %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_isapi.dll and another for 64 bit %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_isapi.dll. You can name them both the same ASP.NET v4.0.30319.
