Change color of PNG image via CSS?

I've been able to do this using SVG filter. You can write a filter that multiplies the color of source image with the color you want to change to. In the code snippet below, flood-color is the color we want to change image color to (which is Red in this case.) feComposite tells the filter how we're processing the color. The formula for feComposite with arithmetic is (k1*i1*i2 + k2*i1 + k3*i2 + k4) where i1 and i2 are input colors for in/in2 accordingly. So specifying only k1=1 means it will do just i1*i2, which means multiplying both input colors together.

Note: This only works with HTML5 since this is using inline SVG. But I think you might be able to make this work with older browser by putting SVG in a separate file. I haven't tried that approach yet.

MySQL/Writing file error (Errcode 28)

The error means that you dont have enough space to create temp files needed by MySQL.

The first thing you can try is to expand the size of your /tmp/ partition. If you are under LVM, check the lvextend command.

If you are not able to increase the size of your partition /tmp/ you can work in the MySQL configuration, edit the my.cnf (typically on /etc/mysql/my.cnf) file and look for this line:

tmpdir = /tmp/

Change it for whatever you want (example /var/tmp/). Just be sure to have space and assign write permission for the mysql user in the new directory.

As Gordon already posted this is the new Extension from Microsoft and uses the sqlsrv_* API instead of mssql_*

On Linux you do not have the requisite drivers and neither the SQLSERV Extension.

In short you need to install FreeTDS and YES you need to use mssql_* functions on linux. see update 2

To simplify things in the long run I would recommend creating a wrapper class with requisite functions which use the appropriate API (sqlsrv_* or mssql_*) based on which extension is loaded.

Update 2: You do not need to use mssql_* functions on linux. You can connect to an ms sql server using PDO + ODBC + FreeTDS. On windows, the best performing method to connect is via PDO + ODBC + SQL Native Client since the PDO + SQLSRV driver can be incredibly slow.

Even though it's too late, I'd like to give my input on this as it might clarify why the solution given by JB Nizet works. I stumbled upon this little problem working on a byte parser and to string conversion myself. When you copy from a bigger size integral type to a smaller size integral type as this java doc says this happens:

In addition to a possible loss of information about the magnitude of the numeric value, this may cause the sign of the resulting value to differ from the sign of the input value.

You can be sure that a byte is an integral type as this java doc says https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/datatypes.html byte: The byte data type is an 8-bit signed two's complement integer.

So in the case of casting an integer(32 bits) to a byte(8 bits), you just copy the last (least significant 8 bits) of that integer to the given byte variable.

Thanks to this article, I realized (with jQuery) I can use e.pageY and e.pageX instead of worrying about e.offsetY/X and e.clientY/X issue between browsers.

Through my trial and error, I started to use the clientX and clientY mouse coordinates in the jQuery event object. These coordinates gave me the X and Y offset of the mouse relative to the top-left corner of the browser's view port. As I was reading the jQuery 1.4 Reference Guide by Karl Swedberg and Jonathan Chaffer, however, I saw that they often referred to the pageX and pageY coordinates. After checking the updated jQuery documentation, I saw that these were the coordinates standardized by jQuery; and, I saw that they gave me the X and Y offset of the mouse relative to the entire document (not just the view port).

I liked this event.pageY idea because it would always be the same, as it was relative to the document. I can compare it to my :after's parent element using offset(), which returns its X and Y also relative to the document.

Therefore, I can come up with a range of "clickable" region on the entire page that never changes.

You are touching multiple issues here:

1) A stack trace should never be visibile to end users (for user experience and security purposes)

Yes, it should be accessible to diagnose problems of end-users, but end-user should not see them for two reasons:

  • They are very obscure and unreadable, the application will look very user-unfriendly.
  • Showing a stack trace to end-user might introduce a potential security risk. Correct me if I'm wrong, PHP actually prints function parameters in stack trace - brilliant, but very dangerous - if you would you get exception while connecting to the database, what are you likely to in the stacktrace?

2) Generating a stack trace is a relatively expensive process (though unlikely to be an issue in most 'exception'al circumstances)

Generating a stack trace happens when the exception is being created/thrown (that's why throwing an exception comes with a price), printing is not that expensive. In fact you can override Throwable#fillInStackTrace() in your custom exception effectively making throwing an exception almost as cheap as a simple GOTO statement.

3) Many logging frameworks will print the stack trace for you (ours does not and no, we can't change it easily)

Very good point. The main issue here is: if the framework logs the exception for you, do nothing (but make sure it does!) If you want to log the exception yourself, use logging framework like Logback or Log4J, to not put them on the raw console because it is very hard to control it.

With logging framework you can easily redirect stack traces to file, console or even send them to a specified e-mail address. With hardcoded printStackTrace() you have to live with the sysout.

4) Printing the stack trace does not constitute error handling. It should be combined with other information logging and exception handling.

Again: log SQLException correctly (with the full stack trace, using logging framework) and show nice: "Sorry, we are currently not able to process your request" message. Do you really think the user is interested in the reasons? Have you seen StackOverflow error screen? It's very humorous, but does not reveal any details. However it ensures the user that the problem will be investigated.

But he will call you immediately and you need to be able to diagnose the problem. So you need both: proper exception logging and user-friendly messages.


To wrap things up: always log exceptions (preferably using logging framework), but do not expose them to the end-user. Think carefully and about error-messages in your GUI, show stack traces only in development mode.

As others have pointed out, there are many web frameworks for Python.

But, seeing as you are just getting started with Python, a simple CGI script might be more appropriate:

  1. Rename your script to index.cgi. You also need to execute chmod +x index.cgi to give it execution privileges.

  2. Add these 2 lines in the beginning of the file:

After this the Python code should run just like in terminal, except the output goes to the browser. When you get that working, you can use the cgi module to get data back from the browser.
