Disabled form inputs do not appear in the request

I find this works easier. readonly the input field, then style it so the end user knows it's read only. inputs placed here (from AJAX for example) can still submit, without extra code.

<input readonly style="color: Grey; opacity: 1; ">

Remove file extension from a file name string

You can use

string extension = System.IO.Path.GetExtension(filename);

And then remove the extension manually:

string result = filename.Substring(0, filename.Length - extension.Length);

How to solve error message: "Failed to map the path '/'."

restarting IIS solved the same issue in my case. Seems like something fails in IIS. Didn't worth my panic, either.

IIS 7.5, btw.

Create PDF with Java

Following are few libraries to create PDF with Java:

  1. iText
  2. Apache PDFBox
  3. BFO

I have used iText for genarating PDF's with a little bit of pain in the past.

Or you can try using FOP: FOP is an XSL formatter written in Java. It is used in conjunction with an XSLT transformation engine to format XML documents into PDF.

Integer.valueOf() vs. Integer.parseInt()

First Question: Difference between parseInt and valueOf in java?

Second Question:

NumberFormat format = NumberFormat.getInstance(Locale.FRANCE);
Number number = format.parse("1,234");
double d = number.doubleValue();

Third Question:

DecimalFormat df = new DecimalFormat();
DecimalFormatSymbols symbols = new DecimalFormatSymbols();
symbols.setDecimalSeparator('.');
symbols.setGroupingSeparator(',');
df.setDecimalFormatSymbols(symbols);
df.parse(p);

Django CharField vs TextField

For eg.,. 2 fields are added in a model like below..

description = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True)
title = models.CharField(max_length=64, blank=True, null=True)

Below are the mysql queries executed when migrations are applied.

for TextField(description) the field is defined as a longtext

ALTER TABLE `sometable_sometable` ADD COLUMN `description` longtext NULL;

The maximum length of TextField of MySQL is 4GB according to string-type-overview.

for CharField(title) the max_length(required) is defined as varchar(64)

ALTER TABLE `sometable_sometable` ADD COLUMN `title` varchar(64) NULL;
ALTER TABLE `sometable_sometable` ALTER COLUMN `title` DROP DEFAULT;

WCF named pipe minimal example

Try this.

Here is the service part.

[ServiceContract]
public interface IService
{
    [OperationContract]
    void  HelloWorld();
}

public class Service : IService
{
    public void HelloWorld()
    {
        //Hello World
    }
}

Here is the Proxy

public class ServiceProxy : ClientBase<IService>
{
    public ServiceProxy()
        : base(new ServiceEndpoint(ContractDescription.GetContract(typeof(IService)),
            new NetNamedPipeBinding(), new EndpointAddress("net.pipe://localhost/MyAppNameThatNobodyElseWillUse/helloservice")))
    {

    }
    public void InvokeHelloWorld()
    {
        Channel.HelloWorld();
    }
}

And here is the service hosting part.

var serviceHost = new ServiceHost
        (typeof(Service), new Uri[] { new Uri("net.pipe://localhost/MyAppNameThatNobodyElseWillUse") });
    serviceHost.AddServiceEndpoint(typeof(IService), new NetNamedPipeBinding(), "helloservice");
    serviceHost.Open();

    Console.WriteLine("Service started. Available in following endpoints");
    foreach (var serviceEndpoint in serviceHost.Description.Endpoints)
    {
        Console.WriteLine(serviceEndpoint.ListenUri.AbsoluteUri);
    }

"Cannot allocate an object of abstract type" error

You must have some virtual function declared in one of the parent classes and never implemented in any of the child classes. Make sure that all virtual functions are implemented somewhere in the inheritence chain. If a class's definition includes a pure virtual function that is never implemented, an instance of that class cannot ever be constructed.

Failed to load the JNI shared Library (JDK)

Thank you misterfrb, I realised that Eclipse was giving this error, because I had just installed Oracle 10g Developer suite, and it was looking for the jvm.dll file in the C:\DevSuiteHome_1 folder (I must have opted to install JDK again along with developer suite).

After removing the DevSuiteHome lines from the paths variable and adding the correction location for 64-bit jvm.dll (not sure if this was necessary, didn't try without), Eclipse worked again, and Developer suite still does too.

remove / reset inherited css from an element

Technically what you are looking for is the unset value in combination with the shorthand property all:

The unset CSS keyword resets a property to its inherited value if it inherits from its parent, and to its initial value if not. In other words, it behaves like the inherit keyword in the first case, and like the initial keyword in the second case. It can be applied to any CSS property, including the CSS shorthand all.

.customClass {
  /* specific attribute */
  color: unset;
}

.otherClass{
  /* unset all attributes */
  all: unset;
  /* then set own attributes */
  color: red;
}

You can use the initial value as well, this will default to the initial browser value.

.otherClass{
  /* unset all attributes */
  all: initial;
  /* then set own attributes */
  color: red;
}

As an alternative:
If possible it is probably good practice to encapsulate the class or id in a kind of namespace:

.namespace .customClass{
  color: red;
}
<div class="namespace">
  <div class="customClass"></div>
</div>

because of the specificity of the selector this will only influence your own classes

It is easier to accomplish this in "preprocessor scripting languages" like SASS with nesting capabilities:

.namespace{
  .customClass{
    color: red
  }
}

Choice between vector::resize() and vector::reserve()

reserve when you do not want the objects to be initialized when reserved. also, you may prefer to logically differentiate and track its count versus its use count when you resize. so there is a behavioral difference in the interface - the vector will represent the same number of elements when reserved, and will be 100 elements larger when resized in your scenario.

Is there any better choice in this kind of scenario?

it depends entirely on your aims when fighting the default behavior. some people will favor customized allocators -- but we really need a better idea of what it is you are attempting to solve in your program to advise you well.

fwiw, many vector implementations will simply double the allocated element count when they must grow - are you trying to minimize peak allocation sizes or are you trying to reserve enough space for some lock free program or something else?

Event for Handling the Focus of the EditText

For those of us who this above valid solution didnt work, there's another workaround here

 searchView.setOnQueryTextFocusChangeListener(new View.OnFocusChangeListener() {
        @Override
        public void onFocusChange(View view, boolean isFocused) {
            if(!isFocused)
            {
                Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this,"not focused",Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

            }
        }
    });

JSON.NET Error Self referencing loop detected for type

Fix 1: Ignoring circular reference globally

(I have chosen/tried this one, as have many others)

The json.net serializer has an option to ignore circular references. Put the following code in WebApiConfig.cs file:

 config.Formatters.JsonFormatter.SerializerSettings.ReferenceLoopHandling
= Newtonsoft.Json.ReferenceLoopHandling.Ignore;

The simple fix will make serializer to ignore the reference which will cause a loop. However, it has limitations:

  • The data loses the looping reference information
  • The fix only applies to JSON.net
  • The level of references can't be controlled if there is a deep reference chain

If you want to use this fix in a non-api ASP.NET project, you can add the above line to Global.asax.cs, but first add:

var config = GlobalConfiguration.Configuration;

If you want to use this in .Net Core project, you can change Startup.cs as:

  var mvc = services.AddMvc(options =>
        {
           ...
        })
        .AddJsonOptions(x => x.SerializerSettings.ReferenceLoopHandling = Newtonsoft.Json.ReferenceLoopHandling.Ignore);

Fix 2: Preserving circular reference globally

This second fix is similar to the first. Just change the code to:

config.Formatters.JsonFormatter.SerializerSettings.ReferenceLoopHandling
     = Newtonsoft.Json.ReferenceLoopHandling.Serialize;
config.Formatters.JsonFormatter.SerializerSettings.PreserveReferencesHandling
     = Newtonsoft.Json.PreserveReferencesHandling.Objects;

The data shape will be changed after applying this setting.

[
   {
      "$id":"1",
      "Category":{
         "$id":"2",
         "Products":[
            {
               "$id":"3",
               "Category":{
                  "$ref":"2"
               },
               "Id":2,
               "Name":"Yogurt"
            },
            {
               "$ref":"1"
            }
         ],
         "Id":1,
         "Name":"Diary"
      },
      "Id":1,
      "Name":"Whole Milk"
   },
   {
      "$ref":"3"
   }
]

The $id and $ref keeps the all the references and makes the object graph level flat, but the client code needs to know the shape change to consume the data and it only applies to JSON.NET serializer as well.

Fix 3: Ignore and preserve reference attributes

This fix is decorate attributes on model class to control the serialization behavior on model or property level. To ignore the property:

 public class Category
    {
        public int Id { get; set; }
        public string Name { get; set; }

        [JsonIgnore]
        [IgnoreDataMember]
        public virtual ICollection<Product> Products { get; set; }
    }

JsonIgnore is for JSON.NET and IgnoreDataMember is for XmlDCSerializer. To preserve reference:

 // Fix 3
        [JsonObject(IsReference = true)]
        public class Category
        {
            public int Id { get; set; }
            public string Name { get; set; }

           // Fix 3
           //[JsonIgnore]
           //[IgnoreDataMember]
           public virtual ICollection<Product> Products { get; set; }
       }

       [DataContract(IsReference = true)]
       public class Product
       {
           [Key]
           public int Id { get; set; }

           [DataMember]
           public string Name { get; set; }

           [DataMember]
           public virtual Category Category { get; set; }
       }

JsonObject(IsReference = true)] is for JSON.NET and [DataContract(IsReference = true)] is for XmlDCSerializer. Note that: after applying DataContract on class, you need to add DataMember to properties that you want to serialize.

The attributes can be applied on both json and xml serializer and gives more controls on model class.

Convert binary to ASCII and vice versa

if you don'y want to import any files you can use this:

with open("Test1.txt", "r") as File1:
St = (' '.join(format(ord(x), 'b') for x in File1.read()))
StrList = St.split(" ")

to convert a text file to binary.

and you can use this to convert it back to string:

StrOrgList = StrOrgMsg.split(" ")

for StrValue in StrOrgList:
    if(StrValue != ""):
        StrMsg += chr(int(str(StrValue),2))
print(StrMsg)

hope that is helpful, i've used this with some custom encryption to send over TCP.

Add new line in text file with Windows batch file

I believe you are using the

echo Text >> Example.txt

function?

If so the answer would be simply adding a "." (Dot) directly after the echo with nothing else there.

Example:

echo Blah
echo Blah 2
echo. #New line is added
echo Next Blah

C# IPAddress from string

You've probably miss-typed something above that bit of code or created your own class called IPAddress. If you're using the .net one, that function should be available.

Have you tried using System.Net.IPAddress just in case?

System.Net.IPAddress ipaddress = System.Net.IPAddress.Parse("127.0.0.1");  //127.0.0.1 as an example

The docs on Microsoft's site have a complete example which works fine on my machine.

Get Last Part of URL PHP

One of the most elegant solutions was here Get characters after last / in url

by DisgruntledGoat

$id = substr($url, strrpos($url, '/') + 1);

strrpos gets the position of the last occurrence of the slash; substr returns everything after that position.

Creating Scheduled Tasks

You can use Task Scheduler Managed Wrapper:

using System;
using Microsoft.Win32.TaskScheduler;

class Program
{
   static void Main(string[] args)
   {
      // Get the service on the local machine
      using (TaskService ts = new TaskService())
      {
         // Create a new task definition and assign properties
         TaskDefinition td = ts.NewTask();
         td.RegistrationInfo.Description = "Does something";

         // Create a trigger that will fire the task at this time every other day
         td.Triggers.Add(new DailyTrigger { DaysInterval = 2 });

         // Create an action that will launch Notepad whenever the trigger fires
         td.Actions.Add(new ExecAction("notepad.exe", "c:\\test.log", null));

         // Register the task in the root folder
         ts.RootFolder.RegisterTaskDefinition(@"Test", td);

         // Remove the task we just created
         ts.RootFolder.DeleteTask("Test");
      }
   }
}

Alternatively you can use native API or go for Quartz.NET. See this for details.

What's the right way to decode a string that has special HTML entities in it?

This is my favourite way of decoding HTML characters. The advantage of using this code is that tags are also preserved.

function decodeHtml(html) {
    var txt = document.createElement("textarea");
    txt.innerHTML = html;
    return txt.value;
}

Example: http://jsfiddle.net/k65s3/

Input:

Entity:&nbsp;Bad attempt at XSS:<script>alert('new\nline?')</script><br>

Output:

Entity: Bad attempt at XSS:<script>alert('new\nline?')</script><br>

Highlight text similar to grep, but don't filter out text

If you are looking for a pattern in a directory recursively, you can either first save it to file.

ls -1R ./ | list-of-files.txt

And then grep that, or pipe it to the grep search

ls -1R | grep --color -rE '[A-Z]|'

This will look of listing all files, but colour the ones with uppercase letters. If you remove the last | you will only see the matches.

I use this to find images named badly with upper case for example, but normal grep does not show the path for each file just once per directory so this way I can see context.

How do I iterate and modify Java Sets?

Firstly, I believe that trying to do several things at once is a bad practice in general and I suggest you think over what you are trying to achieve.

It serves as a good theoretical question though and from what I gather the CopyOnWriteArraySet implementation of java.util.Set interface satisfies your rather special requirements.

http://download.oracle.com/javase/1,5.0/docs/api/java/util/concurrent/CopyOnWriteArraySet.html

What does SQL clause "GROUP BY 1" mean?

It will group by the column position you put after the group by clause.

for example if you run 'SELECT SALESMAN_NAME, SUM(SALES) FROM SALES GROUP BY 1' it will group by SALESMAN_NAME.

One risk on doing that is if you run 'Select *' and for some reason you recreate the table with columns on a different order, it will give you a different result than you would expect.

How do I read image data from a URL in Python?

select the image in chrome, right click on it, click on Copy image address, paste it into a str variable (my_url) to read the image:

import shutil
import requests

my_url = 'https://www.washingtonian.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/6-30-17-goat-yoga-congressional-cemetery-1-994x559.jpg'
response = requests.get(my_url, stream=True)
with open('my_image.png', 'wb') as file:
    shutil.copyfileobj(response.raw, file)
del response

open it;

from PIL import Image

img = Image.open('my_image.png')
img.show()

How to add checkboxes to JTABLE swing

1) JTable knows JCheckbox with built-in Boolean TableCellRenderers and TableCellEditor by default, then there is contraproductive declare something about that,

2) AbstractTableModel should be useful, where is in the JTable required to reduce/restrict/change nested and inherits methods by default implemented in the DefaultTableModel,

3) consider using DefaultTableModel, (if you are not sure about how to works) instead of AbstractTableModel,

table_with_BooleanType_column

could be generated from simple code:

import javax.swing.*;
import javax.swing.table.*;

public class TableCheckBox extends JFrame {

    private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
    private JTable table;

    public TableCheckBox() {
        Object[] columnNames = {"Type", "Company", "Shares", "Price", "Boolean"};
        Object[][] data = {
            {"Buy", "IBM", new Integer(1000), new Double(80.50), false},
            {"Sell", "MicroSoft", new Integer(2000), new Double(6.25), true},
            {"Sell", "Apple", new Integer(3000), new Double(7.35), true},
            {"Buy", "Nortel", new Integer(4000), new Double(20.00), false}
        };
        DefaultTableModel model = new DefaultTableModel(data, columnNames);
        table = new JTable(model) {

            private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;

            /*@Override

            @Override
            public Class getColumnClass(int column) {
                switch (column) {
                    case 0:
                        return String.class;
                    case 1:
                        return String.class;
                    case 2:
                        return Integer.class;
                    case 3:

                }
            }
        };
        table.setPreferredScrollableViewportSize(table.getPreferredSize());
        JScrollPane scrollPane = new JScrollPane(table);
        getContentPane().add(scrollPane);
    }

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {

            @Override
            public void run() {
                TableCheckBox frame = new TableCheckBox();
                frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
                frame.pack();
                frame.setLocation(150, 150);
                frame.setVisible(true);

RequiredIf Conditional Validation Attribute

If you try to use "ModelState.Remove" or "ModelState["Prop"].Errors.Clear()" the "ModelState.IsValid" stil returns false.

Why not just removing the default "Required" Annotation from Model and make your custom validation before the "ModelState.IsValid" on Controller 'Post' action? Like this:

if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(yourClass.Property1) && String.IsNullOrEmpty(yourClass.dependantProperty))
            ModelState.AddModelError("dependantProperty", "It´s necessary to select some 'dependant'.");

Change location of log4j.properties

Yes, define log4j.configuration property

java -Dlog4j.configuration=file:/path/to/log4j.properties myApp

Note, that property value must be a URL.

For more read section 'Default Initialization Procedure' in Log4j manual.

Better way to get type of a Javascript variable?

function getType(obj) {
    if(obj && obj.constructor && obj.constructor.name) {
        return obj.constructor.name;
    }
    return Object.prototype.toString.call(obj).slice(8, -1).toLowerCase();
}

In my preliminary tests, this is working pretty well. The first case will print the name of any object created with "new", and the 2nd case should catch everything else.

I'm using (8, -1) because I'm assuming that the result is always going to start with [object and end with ] but I'm not certain that's true in every scenario.

Eclipse: All my projects disappeared from Project Explorer

If any of the previous methods don't work for you then delete your old workspace, create a new workspace and put it by default. You can do this by launching Eclipse twice - the second time it asks you for the workspace ;). Then re-import all your projects there and say "problem, goodbye".

Operand type clash: uniqueidentifier is incompatible with int

If you're accessing this via a View then try sp_recompile or refreshing views.

sp_recompile:

Causes stored procedures, triggers, and user-defined functions to be recompiled the next time that they are run. It does this by dropping the existing plan from the procedure cache forcing a new plan to be created the next time that the procedure or trigger is run. In a SQL Server Profiler collection, the event SP:CacheInsert is logged instead of the event SP:Recompile.

Arguments

[ @objname= ] 'object'

The qualified or unqualified name of a stored procedure, trigger, table, view, or user-defined function in the current database. object is nvarchar(776), with no default. If object is the name of a stored procedure, trigger, or user-defined function, the stored procedure, trigger, or function will be recompiled the next time that it is run. If object is the name of a table or view, all the stored procedures, triggers, or user-defined functions that reference the table or view will be recompiled the next time that they are run.

Return Code Values

0 (success) or a nonzero number (failure)

Remarks

sp_recompile looks for an object in the current database only.

The queries used by stored procedures, or triggers, and user-defined functions are optimized only when they are compiled. As indexes or other changes that affect statistics are made to the database, compiled stored procedures, triggers, and user-defined functions may lose efficiency. By recompiling stored procedures and triggers that act on a table, you can reoptimize the queries.

Export SQL query data to Excel

For anyone coming here looking for how to do this in C#, I have tried the following method and had success in dotnet core 2.0.3 and entity framework core 2.0.3

First create your model class.

public class User
{
    public string Name { get; set; }
    public int Address { get; set; }
    public int ZIP { get; set; }
    public string Gender { get; set; }
}

Then install EPPlus Nuget package. (I used version 4.0.5, probably will work for other versions as well.)

Install-Package EPPlus -Version 4.0.5

The create ExcelExportHelper class, which will contain the logic to convert dataset to Excel rows. This class do not have dependencies with your model class or dataset.

public class ExcelExportHelper
    {
        public static string ExcelContentType
        {
            get
            { return "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet"; }
        }

        public static DataTable ListToDataTable<T>(List<T> data)
        {
            PropertyDescriptorCollection properties = TypeDescriptor.GetProperties(typeof(T));
            DataTable dataTable = new DataTable();

            for (int i = 0; i < properties.Count; i++)
            {
                PropertyDescriptor property = properties[i];
                dataTable.Columns.Add(property.Name, Nullable.GetUnderlyingType(property.PropertyType) ?? property.PropertyType);
            }

            object[] values = new object[properties.Count];
            foreach (T item in data)
            {
                for (int i = 0; i < values.Length; i++)
                {
                    values[i] = properties[i].GetValue(item);
                }

                dataTable.Rows.Add(values);
            }
            return dataTable;
        }

        public static byte[] ExportExcel(DataTable dataTable, string heading = "", bool showSrNo = false, params string[] columnsToTake)
        {

            byte[] result = null;
            using (ExcelPackage package = new ExcelPackage())

Now add this method where you want to generate the excel file, probably for a method in the controller. You can pass parameters for your stored procedure as well. Note that the return type of the method is FileContentResult. Whatever query you execute, important thing is you must have the results in a List.

[HttpPost]
public async Task<FileContentResult> Create([Bind("Id,StartDate,EndDate")] GetReport getReport)
{
    DateTime startDate = getReport.StartDate;
    DateTime endDate = getReport.EndDate;

    // call the stored procedure and store dataset in a List.
    List<User> users = _context.Reports.FromSql("exec dbo.SP_GetEmpReport @start={0}, @end={1}", startDate, endDate).ToList();
    //set custome column names
    string[] columns = { "Name", "Address", "ZIP", "Gender"};
    byte[] filecontent = ExcelExportHelper.ExportExcel(users, "Users", true, columns);
    // set file name.
    return File(filecontent, ExcelExportHelper.ExcelContentType, "Report.xlsx");
}

Detect If Browser Tab Has Focus

Important Edit: This answer is outdated. Since writing it, the Visibility API (mdn, example, spec) has been introduced. It is the better way to solve this problem.

var focused = true;

window.onfocus = function() {
    focused = true;
};
window.onblur = function() {
    focused = false;
};

AFAIK, focus and blur are all supported on...everything. (see http://www.quirksmode.org/dom/events/index.html )

Reading int values from SqlDataReader

you can use

reader.GetInt32(3);

to read an 32 bit int from the data reader.

If you know the type of your data I think its better to read using the Get* methods which are strongly typed rather than just reading an object and casting.

Have you considered using

reader.GetInt32(reader.GetOrdinal(columnName))

rather than accessing by position. This makes your code less brittle and will not break if you change the query to add new columns before the existing ones. If you are going to do this in a loop, cache the ordinal first.

get DATEDIFF excluding weekends using sql server

If you hate CASE statements as much as I do, and want to be able to use the solution inline in your queries, just get the difference of days and subtract the count of weekend days and you'll have the desired result:

declare @d1 datetime, @d2 datetime,  @days int
select @d1 = '2018/10/01',  @d2 = '2018/11/01'

SET @days = DateDiff(dd, @d1, @d2) - DateDiff(ww, @d1, @d2)*2
print @days

(The only caveat--or at least point to keep in mind--is that this calculation is not inclusive of the last date, so you might need to add one day to the end date to achieve an inclusive result)

Javascript - Regex to validate date format

Please find in the below code which enables to perform the date validation for any of the supplied format or based on user locale to validate start/from and end/to dates. There could be some better approaches but have come up with this. Have tested it for the formats like: MM/dd/yyyy, dd/MM/yyyy, yyyy-MM-dd, yyyy.MM.dd, yyyy/MM/dd and dd-MM-yyyy.

Note supplied date format and date string go hand in hand.

    <script type="text/javascript">
function validate(format) {

    if(isAfterCurrentDate(document.getElementById('start').value, format)) {
        alert('Date is after the current date.');
    } else {

    }
    if(isBeforeCurrentDate(document.getElementById('start').value, format)) {
        alert('Date is before current date.');
    } else {
        alert('Date is not before current date.');
    }
    if(isCurrentDate(document.getElementById('start').value, format)) {
        alert('Date is current date.');
    } else {
        alert('Date is not a current date.');
    }

How to determine if one array contains all elements of another array

Depending on how big your arrays are you might consider an efficient algorithm O(n log n)

def equal_a(a1, a2)
  a1sorted = a1.sort
  a2sorted = a2.sort
  return false if a1.length != a2.length
  0.upto(a1.length - 1) do
    |i| return false if a1sorted[i] != a2sorted[i]
  end
end

Sorting costs O(n log n) and checking each pair costs O(n) thus this algorithm is O(n log n). The other algorithms cannot be faster (asymptotically) using unsorted arrays.

How to read an entire file to a string using C#?

You can use like this

public static string ReadFileAndFetchStringInSingleLine(string file)
    {
        StringBuilder sb;
        try
        {
            sb = new StringBuilder();
            using (FileStream fs = File.Open(file, FileMode.Open))
            {
                using (BufferedStream bs = new BufferedStream(fs))
                {
                    using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(bs))
                    {
                        string str;
                        while ((str = sr.ReadLine()) != null)
                        {
                            sb.Append(str);
                        }
                    }
                }
            }
            return sb.ToString();
        }
        catch (Exception ex)
        {
            return "";
        }
    }

Hope this will help you.

How to check if a file exists in a folder?

Since nobody said how to check if the file exists AND get the current folder the executable is in (Working Directory):

if (File.Exists(Directory.GetCurrentDirectory() + @"\YourFile.txt")) {
                //do stuff
}

The @"\YourFile.txt" is not case sensitive, that means stuff like @"\YoUrFiLe.txt" and @"\YourFile.TXT" or @"\yOuRfILE.tXt" is interpreted the same.

Add object to ArrayList at specified index

Suppose you want to add an item at a position, then the list size must be more than the position.

add(2, item): this syntax means, move the old item at position 2 to next index and add the item at 2nd position.

If there is no item in 2nd position, then this will not work, It'll throw an exception.

That means if you want to add something in position 2,

your list size must be at least (2 + 1) =3, so the items are available at 0,1,2 Position.

in that way it is ensured that the position 2 is accessed safely and there would be no exception.

how to increase sqlplus column output length?

I've just used the following command:

SET LIN[ESIZE] 200

(from http://ss64.com/ora/syntax-sqlplus-set.html).

EDIT: For clarity, valid commands are SET LIN 200 or SET LINESIZE 200.

This works fine, but you have to ensure your console window is wide enough. If you're using SQL Plus direct from MS Windows Command Prompt, the console window will automatically wrap the line at whatever the "Screen Buffer Size Width" property is set to, regardless of any SQL Plus LINESIZE specification.

As suggested by @simplyharsh, you can also configure individual columns to display set widths, using COLUMN col_name FORMAT Ax (where x is the desired length, in characters) - this is useful if you have one or two extra large columns and you just wish to show a summary of their values in the console screen.

Converting an int or String to a char array on Arduino

Just as a reference, here is an example of how to convert between String and char[] with a dynamic length -

// Define
String str = "This is my string";

// Length (with one extra character for the null terminator)
int str_len = str.length() + 1;

// Prepare the character array (the buffer)
char char_array[str_len];

// Copy it over
str.toCharArray(char_array, str_len);

Yes, this is painfully obtuse for something as simple as a type conversion, but sadly it's the easiest way.

What is the difference between 127.0.0.1 and localhost

Wikipedia sums this up well:

On modern computer systems, localhost as a hostname translates to an IPv4 address in the 127.0.0.0/8 (loopback) net block, usually 127.0.0.1, or ::1 in IPv6.

The only difference is that it would be looking up in the DNS for the system what localhost resolves to. This lookup is really, really quick. For instance, to get to stackoverflow.com you typed in that to the address bar (or used a bookmarklet that pointed here). Either way, you got here through a hostname. localhost provides a similar functionality.

Mongoose's find method with $or condition does not work properly

I solved it through googling:

var ObjectId = require('mongoose').Types.ObjectId;
var objId = new ObjectId( (param.length < 12) ? "123456789012" : param );
// You should make string 'param' as ObjectId type. To avoid exception,
// the 'param' must consist of more than 12 characters.

User.find( { $or:[ {'_id':objId}, {'name':param}, {'nickname':param} ]},
  function(err,docs){
    if(!err) res.send(docs);
});

Which characters need to be escaped in HTML?

Basically, there are three main characters which should be always escaped in your HTML and XML files, so they don't interact with the rest of the markups, so as you probably expect, two of them gonna be the syntax wrappers, which are <>, they are listed as below:

 1)  &lt; (<)

 2)  &gt; (>)

 3)  &amp; (&)

Also we may use double-quote (") as " and the single quote (') as &apos

Avoid putting dynamic content in <script> and <style>.These rules are not for applied for them. For example, if you have to include JSON in a , replace < with \x3c, the U+2028 character with \u2028, and U+2029 with \u2029 after JSON serialisation.)

HTML Escape Characters: Complete List: http://www.theukwebdesigncompany.com/articles/entity-escape-characters.php

So you need to escape <, or & when followed by anything that could begin a character reference. Also The rule on ampersands is the only such rule for quoted attributes, as the matching quotation mark is the only thing that will terminate one. But if you don’t want to terminate the attribute value there, escape the quotation mark.

Changing to UTF-8 means re-saving your file:

Using the character encoding UTF-8 for your page means that you can avoid the need for most escapes and just work with characters. Note, however, that to change the encoding of your document, it is not enough to just change the encoding declaration at the top of the page or on the server. You need to re-save your document in that encoding. For help understanding how to do that with your application read Setting encoding in web authoring applications.

Invisible or ambiguous characters:

A particularly useful role for escapes is to represent characters that are invisible or ambiguous in presentation.

One example would be Unicode character U+200F RIGHT-TO-LEFT MARK. This character can be used to clarify directionality in bidirectional text (eg. when using the Arabic or Hebrew scripts). It has no graphic form, however, so it is difficult to see where these characters are in the text, and if they are lost or forgotten they could create unexpected results during later editing. Using ? (or its numeric character reference equivalent ?) instead makes it very easy to spot these characters.

An example of an ambiguous character is U+00A0 NO-BREAK SPACE. This type of space prevents line breaking, but it looks just like any other space when used as a character. Using   makes it quite clear where such spaces appear in the text.

C++ terminate called without an active exception

First you define a thread. And if you never call join() or detach() before calling the thread destructor, the program will abort.

As follows, calling a thread destructor without first calling join (to wait for it to finish) or detach is guarenteed to immediately call std::terminate and end the program.

Either implicitly detaching or joining a joinable() thread in its destructor could result in difficult to debug correctness (for detach) or performance (for join) bugs encountered only when an exception is raised. Thus the programmer must ensure that the destructor is never executed while the thread is still joinable.

Regex matching beginning AND end strings

If you're searching for hits within a larger text, you don't want to use ^ and $ as some other responders have said; those match the beginning and end of the text. Try this instead:

\bdbo\.\w+_fn\b

\b is a word boundary: it matches a position that is either preceded by a word character and not followed by one, or followed by a word character and not preceded by one. This regex will find what you're looking for in any of these strings:

dbo.functionName_fn
foo dbo.functionName_fn bar
(dbo.functionName_fn)

...but not in this one:

foodbo.functionName_fnbar

\w+ matches one or more "word characters" (letters, digits, or _). If you need something more inclusive, you can try \S+ (one or more non-whitespace characters) or .+? (one or more of any characters except linefeeds, non-greedily). The non-greedy +? prevents it from accidentally matching something like dbo.func1_fn dbo.func2_fn as if it were just one hit.

Why use 'git rm' to remove a file instead of 'rm'?

If you just use rm, you will need to follow it up with git add <fileRemoved>. git rm does this in one step.

You can also use git rm --cached which will remove the file from the index (staging it for deletion on the next commit), but keep your copy in the local file system.

Convert String with Dot or Comma as decimal separator to number in JavaScript

I realise I'm late to the party, but I wanted a solution for this that properly handled digit grouping as well as different decimal separators for currencies. As none of these fully covered my use case I wrote my own solution which may be useful to others:

function parsePotentiallyGroupedFloat(stringValue) {
    stringValue = stringValue.trim();
    var result = stringValue.replace(/[^0-9]/g, '');
    if (/[,\.]\d{2}$/.test(stringValue)) {
        result = result.replace(/(\d{2})$/, '.$1');
    }
    return parseFloat(result);
}

This should strip out any non-digits and then check whether there was a decimal point (or comma) followed by two digits and insert the decimal point if needed.

It's worth noting that I aimed this specifically for currency and as such it assumes either no decimal places or exactly two. It's pretty hard to be sure about whether the first potential decimal point encountered is a decimal point or a digit grouping character (e.g., 1.542 could be 1542) unless you know the specifics of the current locale, but it should be easy enough to tailor this to your specific use case by changing \d{2}$ to something that will appropriately match what you expect to be after the decimal point.

fileReader.readAsBinaryString to upload files

(Following is a late but complete answer)

FileReader methods support

FileReader.readAsBinaryString() is deprecated. Don't use it! It's no longer in the W3C File API working draft:

void abort();
void readAsArrayBuffer(Blob blob);
void readAsText(Blob blob, optional DOMString encoding);
void readAsDataURL(Blob blob);

NB: Note that File is a kind of extended Blob structure.

Mozilla still implements readAsBinaryString() and describes it in MDN FileApi documentation:

void abort();
void readAsArrayBuffer(in Blob blob); Requires Gecko 7.0
void readAsBinaryString(in Blob blob);
void readAsDataURL(in Blob file);
void readAsText(in Blob blob, [optional] in DOMString encoding);

The reason behind readAsBinaryString() deprecation is in my opinion the following: the standard for JavaScript strings are DOMString which only accept UTF-8 characters, NOT random binary data. So don't use readAsBinaryString(), that's not safe and ECMAScript-compliant at all.

We know that JavaScript strings are not supposed to store binary data but Mozilla in some sort can. That's dangerous in my opinion. Blob and typed arrays (ArrayBuffer and the not-yet-implemented but not necessary StringView) were invented for one purpose: allow the use of pure binary data, without UTF-8 strings restrictions.

XMLHttpRequest upload support

XMLHttpRequest.send() has the following invocations options:

void send();
void send(ArrayBuffer data);
void send(Blob data);
void send(Document data);
void send(DOMString? data);
void send(FormData data);

XMLHttpRequest.sendAsBinary() has the following invocations options:

void sendAsBinary(   in DOMString body );

sendAsBinary() is NOT a standard and may not be supported in Chrome.

Solutions

So you have several options:

  1. send() the FileReader.result of FileReader.readAsArrayBuffer ( fileObject ). It is more complicated to manipulate (you'll have to make a separate send() for it) but it's the RECOMMENDED APPROACH.
  2. send() the FileReader.result of FileReader.readAsDataURL( fileObject ). It generates useless overhead and compression latency, requires a decompression step on the server-side BUT it's easy to manipulate as a string in Javascript.
  3. Being non-standard and sendAsBinary() the FileReader.result of FileReader.readAsBinaryString( fileObject )

MDN states that:

The best way to send binary content (like in files upload) is using ArrayBuffers or Blobs in conjuncton with the send() method. However, if you want to send a stringifiable raw data, use the sendAsBinary() method instead, or the StringView (Non native) typed arrays superclass.

select 'A' as [value]
into #tmp
union
select 'B'
union
select 'C'

and then

SELECT
blah
FROM    foo
WHERE myField IN (select [value] from #tmp)

or

SELECT
f.blah
FROM foo f INNER JOIN #tmp t ON f.myField = t.[value]

How to read data From *.CSV file using javascript?

I am using d3.js for parsing csv file. Very easy to use. Here is the docs.

Steps:

  • npm install d3-request

Using Es6;

import { csv } from 'd3-request';
import url from 'path/to/data.csv';

csv(url, function(err, data) {
 console.log(data);
})

Please see docs for more.

Update - d3-request is deprecated. you can use d3-fetch

How to check if cursor exists (open status)

You can use the CURSOR_STATUS function to determine its state.

Ruby: Easiest Way to Filter Hash Keys?

Put this in an initializer

class Hash
  def filter(*args)
    return nil if args.try(:empty?)
    if args.size == 1
      args[0] = args[0].to_s if args[0].is_a?(Symbol)
      self.select {|key| key.to_s.match(args.first) }
    else
      self.select {|key| args.include?(key)}
    end
  end
end

Then you can do

{a: "1", b: "b", c: "c", d: "d"}.filter(:a, :b) # =>  {a: "1", b: "b"}

or

{a: "1", b: "b", c: "c", d: "d"}.filter(/^a/)  # =>  {a: "1"}

Saving ssh key fails

In Windows I had to create the environment variable HOME pointing to my user profile first (C:\Users\<name>) or whatever directory you prefer.

Then start a new command line window, create a a .ssh directory in your user profile or choosen diretory using mkdir ".ssh" command.

After doing that I was able to use the ssh-keygen without any path problems.

Creating a new directory in C

I want to write a program that (...) creates the directory and a (...) file inside of it

because this is a very common question, here is the code to create multiple levels of directories and than call fopen. I'm using a gnu extension to print the error message with printf.

void rek_mkdir(char *path) {
    char *sep = strrchr(path, '/');
    if(sep != NULL) {
        *sep = 0;
        rek_mkdir(path);
        *sep = '/';
    }
    if(mkdir(path, 0777) && errno != EEXIST)
        printf("error while trying to create '%s'\n%m\n", path);
}

FILE *fopen_mkdir(char *path, char *mode) {
    char *sep = strrchr(path, '/');
    if(sep) {
        char *path0 = strdup(path);
        path0[ sep - path ] = 0;
        rek_mkdir(path0);
        free(path0);
    }
    return fopen(path,mode);
}

How to pass model attributes from one Spring MVC controller to another controller?

Using just redirectAttributes.addFlashAttribute(...) -> "redirect:..." worked as well, didn't have to "reinsert" the model attribute.

Thanks, aborskiy!

"Application tried to present modally an active controller"?

Just remove

[tabBarController presentModalViewController:viewController animated:YES];

and keep

[self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES];

Java constructor/method with optional parameters?

You can't have optional arguments that default to a certain value in Java. The nearest thing to what you are talking about is java varargs whereby you can pass an arbitrary number of arguments (of the same type) to a method.

How to use SortedMap interface in Java?

I would use TreeMap, which implements SortedMap. It is designed exactly for that.

Example:

Map<Integer, String> map = new TreeMap<Integer, String>();

// Add Items to the TreeMap
map.put(1, "One");
map.put(2, "Two");
map.put(3, "Three");

// Iterate over them
for (Map.Entry<Integer, String> entry : map.entrySet()) {
    System.out.println(entry.getKey() + " => " + entry.getValue());
}

See the Java tutorial page for SortedMap.
And here a list of tutorials related to TreeMap.

How to read a file into a variable in shell?

In cross-platform, lowest-common-denominator sh you use:

#!/bin/sh
value=`cat config.txt`
echo "$value"

In bash or zsh, to read a whole file into a variable without invoking cat:

#!/bin/bash
value=$(<config.txt)
echo "$value"

Invoking cat in bash or zsh to slurp a file would be considered a Useless Use of Cat.

Note that it is not necessary to quote the command substitution to preserve newlines.

Simple argparse example wanted: 1 argument, 3 results

You could also use plac (a wrapper around argparse).

As a bonus it generates neat help instructions - see below.

Example script:

#!/usr/bin/env python3
def main(
    arg: ('Argument with two possible values', 'positional', None, None, ['A', 'B'])
):
    """General help for application"""
    if arg == 'A':
        print("Argument has value A")
    elif arg == 'B':
        print("Argument has value B")

if __name__ == '__main__':
    import plac
    plac.call(main)

Example output:

No arguments supplied - example.py:

usage: example.py [-h] {A,B}
example.py: error: the following arguments are required: arg

Unexpected argument supplied - example.py C:

usage: example.py [-h] {A,B}
example.py: error: argument arg: invalid choice: 'C' (choose from 'A', 'B')

Correct argument supplied - example.py A :

Argument has value A

Full help menu (generated automatically) - example.py -h:

usage: example.py [-h] {A,B}

General help for application

positional arguments:
  {A,B} Argument with two possible values

optional arguments:
  -h, --help show this help message and exit

Short explanation:

The name of the argument usually equals the parameter name (arg).

The tuple annotation after arg parameter has the following meaning:

  • Description (Argument with two possible values)
  • Type of argument - one of 'flag', 'option' or 'positional' (positional)
  • Abbreviation (None)
  • Type of argument value - eg. float, string (None)
  • Restricted set of choices (['A', 'B'])

Switching the order of block elements with CSS

Update: Two lightweight CSS solutions:

Using flex, flex-flow and order:

Example1: Demo Fiddle

    body{
        display:flex;
        flex-flow: column;
    }
    #blockA{
        order:4;
    }
    #blockB{
        order:3;
    }
    #blockC{
        order:2;
    }

Alternatively, reverse the Y scale:

Example2: Demo Fiddle

body{
    -webkit-transform: scaleY(-1);
    transform: scaleY(-1);
}
div{
    -webkit-transform: scaleY(-1);
    transform: scaleY(-1);
}

How can I add a hint text to WPF textbox?

I used the got and lost focus events:

Private Sub txtSearchBox_GotFocus(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles txtSearchBox.GotFocus
    If txtSearchBox.Text = "Search" Then
        txtSearchBox.Text = ""
    Else

    End If

End Sub

Private Sub txtSearchBox_LostFocus(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles txtSearchBox.LostFocus
    If txtSearchBox.Text = "" Then
        txtSearchBox.Text = "Search"
    Else

    End If
End Sub

It works well, but the text is in gray still. Needs cleaning up. I was using VB.NET

Multiple inputs on one line

Yes, you can.

From cplusplus.com:

Because these functions are operator overloading functions, the usual way in which they are called is:

   strm >> variable;

Where strm is the identifier of a istream object and variable is an object of any type supported as right parameter. It is also possible to call a succession of extraction operations as:

   strm >> variable1 >> variable2 >> variable3; //...

which is the same as performing successive extractions from the same object strm.

Just replace strm with cin.

SQL Server: IF EXISTS ; ELSE

I know its been a while since the original post but I like using CTE's and this worked for me:

WITH cte_table_a
AS
(
    SELECT [id] [id]
    , MAX([value]) [value]
    FROM table_a
    GROUP BY [id]
)
UPDATE table_b
SET table_b.code = CASE WHEN cte_table_a.[value] IS NOT NULL THEN cte_table_a.[value] ELSE 124 END
FROM table_b
LEFT OUTER JOIN  cte_table_a
ON table_b.id = cte_table_a.id

What is hashCode used for? Is it unique?

This is from the msdn article here:

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/tomarcher/2006/05/10/are-hash-codes-unique/

"While you will hear people state that hash codes generate a unique value for a given input, the fact is that, while difficult to accomplish, it is technically feasible to find two different data inputs that hash to the same value. However, the true determining factors regarding the effectiveness of a hash algorithm lie in the length of the generated hash code and the complexity of the data being hashed."

So just use a hash algorithm suitable to your data size and it will have unique hashcodes.

    }
}, 100);

iptables block access to port 8000 except from IP address

You can always use iptables to delete the rules. If you have a lot of rules, just output them using the following command.

iptables-save > myfile

vi to edit them from the commend line. Just use the "dd" to delete the lines you no longer want.

iptables-restore < myfile and you're good to go.

REMEMBER THAT IF YOU DON'T CONFIGURE YOUR OS TO SAVE THE RULES TO A FILE AND THEN LOAD THE FILE DURING THE BOOT THAT YOUR RULES WILL BE LOST.

Python List & for-each access (Find/Replace in built-in list)

Answering this has been good, as the comments have led to an improvement in my own understanding of Python variables.

As noted in the comments, when you loop over a list with something like for member in my_list the member variable is bound to each successive list element. However, re-assigning that variable within the loop doesn't directly affect the list itself. For example, this code won't change the list:

my_list = [1,2,3]
for member in my_list:
    member = 42
print my_list

Output:

[1, 2, 3]

If you want to change a list containing immutable types, you need to do something like:

my_list = [1,2,3]
for ndx, member in enumerate(my_list):
    my_list[ndx] += 42
print my_list

Output:

[43, 44, 45]

If your list contains mutable objects, you can modify the current member object directly:

class C:
    def __init__(self, n):
        self.num = n
    def __repr__(self):
        return str(self.num)

my_list = [C(i) for i in xrange(3)]
for member in my_list:
    member.num += 42
print my_list

[42, 43, 44]

Note that you are still not changing the list, simply modifying the objects in the list.

You might benefit from reading Naming and Binding.

Getting the actual usedrange

Timings on Excel 2013 fairly slow machine with a big bad used range million rows:

26ms Cells.Find xlPrevious method (as above)

0.4ms Sheet.UsedRange (just call it)

0.14ms Counta binary search + 0.4ms Used Range to start search (12 CountA calls)

So the Find xlPrevious is quite slow if that is of concern.

The CountA binary search approach is to first do a Used Range. Then chop the range in half and see if there are any non-empty cells in the bottom half, and then halve again as needed. It is tricky to get right.

Android webview slow

The solution for us was the opposite. We disabled hardware acceleration on the WebView only (rather than on the entire app in the manifest) by using this code:

if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= 11){
    webview.setLayerType(View.LAYER_TYPE_SOFTWARE, null);
}

CSS3 animations are smoother now. We are using Android 4.0.

CSS I want a div to be on top of everything

Yes, in order for the z-index to work, you'll need to give the element a position: absolute or a position: relative property.

But... pay attention to parents!

You have to go up the nodes of the elements to check if at the level of the common parent the first descendants have a defined z-index.

All other descendants can never be in the foreground if at the base there is a lower definite z-index.

In this snippet example, div1-2-1 has a z-index of 1000 but is nevertheless under the div1-1-1 which has a z-index of 3.

This is because div1-1 has a z-index greater than div1-2.

How can I tell jackson to ignore a property for which I don't have control over the source code?

Annotation based approach is better. But sometimes manual operation is needed. For this purpose you can use without method of ObjectWriter.

ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper().configure(DeserializationFeature.FAIL_ON_UNKNOWN_PROPERTIES, false)
ObjectWriter writer   = mapper.writer().withoutAttribute("property1").withoutAttribute("property2");
String       jsonText = writer.writeValueAsString(sourceObject);

What is a constant reference? (not a reference to a constant)

What is a constant reference (not a reference to a constant)
A Constant Reference is actually a Reference to a Constant.

A constant reference/ Reference to a constant is denoted by:

int const &i = j; //or Alternatively
const int &i = j;
i = 1;            //Compilation Error

It basically means, you cannot modify the value of type object to which the Reference Refers.
For Example:
Trying to modify value(assign 1) of variable j through const reference, i will results in error:

assignment of read-only reference ‘i’

icr=y; // Can change the object it is pointing to so it's not like a const pointer...
icr=99;

Doesn't change the reference, it assigns the value of the type to which the reference refers. References cannot be made to refer any other variable than the one they are bound to at Initialization.

First statement assigns the value y to i
Second statement assigns the value 99 to i

jQuery How to Get Element's Margin and Padding?

If the element you're analyzing does not have any margin, border or whatsoever defined you won't be able to return it. At tops you'll be able to get 'auto' which is normally the default.

From your example I can see that you have margT as variable. Not sure if're trying to get margin-top. If that's the case you should be using .css('margin-top').

You're also trying to get the stylization from 'img' which will result (if you have more than one) in an array.

What you should do is use the .each() jquery method.

For example:

jQuery('img').each(function() {
    // get margin top
    var margT = jQuery(this).css('margin-top');

    // Do something with margT
});

Python - Move and overwrite files and folders

If you also need to overwrite files with read only flag use this:

def copyDirTree(root_src_dir,root_dst_dir):
"""
Copy directory tree. Overwrites also read only files.
:param root_src_dir: source directory
:param root_dst_dir:  destination directory
"""
for src_dir, dirs, files in os.walk(root_src_dir):
    dst_dir = src_dir.replace(root_src_dir, root_dst_dir, 1)
    if not os.path.exists(dst_dir):
        os.makedirs(dst_dir)
    for file_ in files:
        src_file = os.path.join(src_dir, file_)
        dst_file = os.path.join(dst_dir, file_)
        if os.path.exists(dst_file):
            try:
                os.remove(dst_file)
            except PermissionError as exc:
                os.chmod(dst_file, stat.S_IWUSR)
                os.remove(dst_file)

        shutil.copy(src_file, dst_dir)

How to get second-highest salary employees in a table

Another intuitive way is :- Suppose we want to find Nth highest salary then

1) Sort Employee as per descending order of salary

2) Take first N records using rownum. So in this step Nth record here is Nth highest salary

3) Now sort this temporary result in ascending order. Thus Nth highest salary is now first record

4) Get first record from this temporary result.

It will be Nth highest salary.

select * from
 (select * from
   (select * from
       (select * from emp order by sal desc)
   where rownum<=:N )
 order by sal )
where rownum=1;

In case there are repeating salaries then in innermost query distinct can be used.

select * from
 (select * from
   (select * from
       (select distinct(sal) from emp order by 1 desc)
   where rownum<=:N )
 order by sal )
where rownum=1;

How to switch back to 'master' with git?

I'm trying to sort of get my head around what's going on over there. Is there anything IN your "example" folder? Git doesn't track empty folders.

If you branched and switched to your new branch then made a new folder and left it empty, and then did "git commit -a", you wouldn't get that new folder in the commit.

Which means it's untracked, which means checking out a different branch wouldn't remove it.
