The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request

995 is an error reported by the IO Completion Port. The error comes since you try to continue read from the socket when it has most likely been closed.

Receiving 0 bytes from EndRecieve means that the socket has been closed, as does most exceptions that EndRecieve will throw.

You need to start dealing with those situations.

Never ever ignore exceptions, they are thrown for a reason.

Update

There is nothing that says that the server does anything wrong. A connection can be lost for a lot of reasons such as idle connection being closed by a switch/router/firewall, shaky network, bad cables etc.

What I'm saying is that you MUST handle disconnections. The proper way of doing so is to dispose the socket and try to connect a new one at certain intervals.

As for the receive callback a more proper way of handling it is something like this (semi pseudo code):

public void OnDataReceived(IAsyncResult asyn)
{
    BLCommonFunctions.WriteLogger(0, "In :- OnDataReceived", ref swReceivedLogWriter, strLogPath, 0);

    try
    {
        SocketPacket client = (SocketPacket)asyn.AsyncState;

        int bytesReceived = client.thisSocket.EndReceive(asyn); //Here error is coming
        if (bytesReceived == 0)
        {
          HandleDisconnect(client);
          return;
        }
    }
    catch (Exception err)
    {
       HandleDisconnect(client);
    }

    try
    {
        string strHEX = BLCommonFunctions.ByteArrToHex(theSockId.dataBuffer);

        //do your handling here
    }
    catch (Exception err)
    {
        // Your logic threw an exception. handle it accordinhly
    }

    try
    {
       client.thisSocket.BeginRecieve(.. all parameters ..);
    }
    catch (Exception err)
    {
       HandleDisconnect(client);
    }
}

the reason to why I'm using three catch blocks is simply because the logic for the middle one is different from the other two. Exceptions from BeginReceive/EndReceive usually indicates socket disconnection while exceptions from your logic should not stop the socket receiving.

Convert double/float to string

sprintf can do this:

#include <stdio.h>
int main() {
  float w = 234.567;
  char x[__SIZEOF_FLOAT__];
  sprintf(x, "%g", w);
  puts(x);
}

How to parse XML using jQuery?

There is the $.parseXML function for this: http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.parseXML/

You can use it like this:

var xml = $.parseXML(yourfile.xml),
  $xml = $( xml ),
  $test = $xml.find('test');

console.log($test.text());

If you really want an object, you need a plugin for that. This plugin for instance, will convert your XML to JSON: http://www.fyneworks.com/jquery/xml-to-json/

What's a good (free) visual merge tool for Git? (on windows)

I've also used Meld. It's written in python. There is an official installer for Windows that works well.

Install it and then set it as your default mergetool.

$ git config --global merge.tool "meld"
$ git config --global mergetool.meld.path "C:\Program Files (x86)\Meld\Meld.exe"

If using a GUI GIT client, try the following (instructions for SourceTree, adjust accordingly)

  • In SourceTree, go to Tools/Options/Diff
  • In External Diff Tool, choose Custom
  • Enter C:\Program Files (x86)\Meld\meld.exe in Diff Command and $LOCAL $REMOTE in Arguments
  • In Merge Tool, choose Custom
  • Enter C:\Program Files (x86)\Meld\meld.exe in Diff Command and $LOCAL $MERGED $REMOTE in Arguments

What is the right way to populate a DropDownList from a database?

public void getClientNameDropDowndata()
{
    getConnection = Connection.SetConnection(); // to connect with data base Configure manager
    string ClientName = "Select  ClientName from Client ";
    SqlCommand ClientNameCommand = new SqlCommand(ClientName, getConnection);
    ClientNameCommand.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
    SqlDataReader ClientNameData;
    ClientNameData = ClientNameCommand.ExecuteReader();
    if (ClientNameData.HasRows)
    {
        DropDownList_ClientName.DataSource = ClientNameData;
        DropDownList_ClientName.DataValueField = "ClientName";
        DropDownList_ClientName.DataTextField="ClientName";
        DropDownList_ClientName.DataBind();
    }
    else
    {
        MessageBox.Show("No is found");
        CloseConnection = new Connection();
        CloseConnection.closeConnection(); // close the connection
    }
}

Using variables inside strings

In C# 6 you can use string interpolation:

string name = "John";
string result = $"Hello {name}";

The syntax highlighting for this in Visual Studio makes it highly readable and all of the tokens are checked.

How to delete row in gridview using rowdeleting event?

Your delete code looks like this

Gridview1.DeleteRow(e.RowIndex);
Gridview1.DataBind();

When you call Gridview1.DataBind() you will populate your gridview with the current datasource. So, it will delete all the existent rows, and it will add all the rows from CustomersSqlDataSource.

What you need to do is delete the row from the table that CustomersSqlDataSource querying.

You can do this very easy by setting a delete command to CustomersSqlDataSource, add a delete parameter, and then execute the delete command.

CustomersSqlDataSource.DeleteCommand = "DELETE FROM Customer Where CustomerID=@CustomerID"; // Customer is the name of the table where you take your data from. Maybe you named it different
CustomersSqlDataSource.DeleteParameters.Add("CustomerID", Gridview1.DataKeys[e.RowIndex].Values["CustomerID"].ToString());
CustomersSqlDataSource.Delete();
Gridview1.DataBind();

But take into account that this will delete the data from the database.

How to get day of the month?

You could start by reading the documentation for Date. Then you realize that Date’s methods are all deprecated and turn to Calender instead.

Calendar now = Calendar.getInstance();
System.out.println(now.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH));

How can I install packages using pip according to the requirements.txt file from a local directory?

Short answer

pip install -r /path/to/requirements.txt

or in another form:

python -m pip install -r /path/to/requirements.txt

Explanation

Here, -r is short form of --requirement and it asks the pip to install from the given requirements file.

pip will start installation only after checking the availability of all listed items in the requirements file and it won't start installation even if one requirement is unavailable.

One workaround to install the available packages is installing listed packages one by one. Use the following command for that. A red color warning will be shown to notify you about the unavailable packages.

cat requirements.txt | xargs -n 1 pip install

To ignore comments (lines starting with a #) and blank lines, use:

cat requirements.txt | cut -f1 -d"#" | sed '/^\s*$/d' | xargs -n 1 pip install

PHP array delete by value (not key)

here is one simple but understandable solution:

$messagesFiltered = [];
foreach ($messages as $message) {
    if (401 != $message) {
        $messagesFiltered[] = $message;
    }
}
$messages = $messagesFiltered;

Failed to allocate memory: 8

Everything else you read here and elsewhere is pure conjecture. The only sure-way to fix this problem is vote for this bug report.

The problem isn't related to emulator resolution or OpenGL, nor how much memory your computer has. I've got 24GB memory in my computer and most of the time I run with hw.ramSize=1024 I get error 8. Other times it works just fine without any configuration changes. I hope you caught that: I did not alter the emulator configuration at all and yet sometimes it runs and sometimes it fails.

There is a high probability it has something to do with memory fragmentation. I recommend reducing the value of hw.ramSize as a temporary workaround.

How can I change the text inside my <span> with jQuery?

Syntax:

  • return the element's text content: $(selector).text()
  • set the element's text content to content: $(selector).text(content)
  • set the element's text content using a callback function: $(selector).text(function(index, curContent))

JQuery - Change the text of a span element

Run automatically program on startup under linux ubuntu

sudo mv /filename /etc/init.d/
sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/filename
sudo update-rc.d filename defaults

Script should now start on boot. Note that this method also works with both hard links and symbolic links (ln).

Edit

At this point in the boot process PATH isn't set yet, so it is critical that absolute paths are used throughout. BUT, as pointed out in the comments by Steve HHH, explicitly declaring the full file path (/etc/init.d/filename) for the update-rc.d command is not valid in most versions of Linux. Per the manpage for update-rc.d, the second parameter is a script located in /etc/init.d/*. Updated above code to reflect this.

Another Edit

Also as pointed out in the comments (by Charles Brandt), /filename must be an init style script. A good template was also provided - https://github.com/fhd/init-script-template.

Another link to another article just to avoid possible link rot (although it would be saddening if GitHub died) - http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/442412-managing-linux-daemons-with-init-scripts

yetAnother Edit

As pointed out in the comments (by Russell Yan), This works only on default mode of update-rc.d.

According to manual of update-rc.d, it can run on two modes, "the machines using the legacy mode will have a file /etc/init.d/.legacy-bootordering", in which case you have to pass sequence and runlevel configuration through command line arguments.

The equivalent argument set for the above example is

sudo update-rc.d filename start 20 2 3 4 5 . stop 20 0 1 6 .

Is there a way to automatically generate getters and setters in Eclipse?

In Eclipse Juno, by default, ALT+SHIFT+S,R opens the getter/setter dialog box. Note you have to press all 4 keys.

Is unsigned integer subtraction defined behavior?

The result of a subtraction generating a negative number in an unsigned type is well-defined:

  1. [...] A computation involving unsigned operands can never overflow, because a result that cannot be represented by the resulting unsigned integer type is reduced modulo the number that is one greater than the largest value that can be represented by the resulting type. (ISO/IEC 9899:1999 (E) §6.2.5/9)

As you can see, (unsigned)0 - (unsigned)1 equals -1 modulo UINT_MAX+1, or in other words, UINT_MAX.

Note that although it does say "A computation involving unsigned operands can never overflow", which might lead you to believe that it applies only for exceeding the upper limit, this is presented as a motivation for the actual binding part of the sentence: "a result that cannot be represented by the resulting unsigned integer type is reduced modulo the number that is one greater than the largest value that can be represented by the resulting type." This phrase is not restricted to overflow of the upper bound of the type, and applies equally to values too low to be represented.

How do I convert an ANSI encoded file to UTF-8 with Notepad++?

Regarding this part:

When I convert it to UTF-8 without bom and close file, the file is again ANSI when I reopen.

The easiest solution is to avoid the problem entirely by properly configuring Notepad++.

Try Settings -> Preferences -> New document -> Encoding -> choose UTF-8 without BOM, and check Apply to opened ANSI files.

notepad++ UTF-8 apply to opened ANSI files

That way all the opened ANSI files will be treated as UTF-8 without BOM.

For explanation what's going on, read the comments below this answer.

To fully learn about Unicode and UTF-8, read this excellent article from Joel Spolsky.

return results from a function (javascript, nodejs)

You are trying to execute an asynchronous function in a synchronous way, which is unfortunately not possible in Javascript.

As you guessed correctly, the roomId=results.... is executed when the loading from the DB completes, which is done asynchronously, so AFTER the resto of your code is completed.

Look at this article, it talks about .insert and not .find, but the idea is the same : http://metaduck.com/01-asynchronous-iteration-patterns.html

Capturing window.onbeforeunload

Yes what everybody says above.

For your immediate situation, instead of onChange, you can use onInput, new in html5. The input event is the same, but it'll fire upon every keystroke, regardless of the focus. Also works on selects and all the rest just like onChange.

CodeIgniter: Unable to connect to your database server using the provided settings Error Message

Problem solved!

I was having all my website set up first in XAMMP, then I had to transfer it to LAMP, in a SUSE installation of LAMP, where I got this error.

The problem is that these parameters in the database.php file should not be initialised. Just leave username and password blank. That's just it.

(My first and lame guess would be that's because of old version of mysql, as built-in installations come with older versions.

How to get everything after last slash in a URL?

Spring: How to inject a value to static field?

Spring uses dependency injection to populate the specific value when it finds the @Value annotation. However, instead of handing the value to the instance variable, it's handed to the implicit setter instead. This setter then handles the population of our NAME_STATIC value.

    @RestController
//or if you want to declare some specific use of the properties file then use
//@Configuration
//@PropertySource({"classpath:application-${youeEnvironment}.properties"})
public class PropertyController {

    @Value("${name}")//not necessary
    private String name;//not necessary

    private static String NAME_STATIC;

    @Value("${name}")
    public void setNameStatic(String name){
        PropertyController.NAME_STATIC = name;
    }
}

Switch case on type c#

Update C# 7

Yes: Source

switch(shape)
{
    case Circle c:
        WriteLine($"circle with radius {c.Radius}");

    case Rectangle s when (s.Length == s.Height):
        WriteLine($"{s.Length} x {s.Height} square");
        break;
    case Rectangle r:
        WriteLine($"{r.Length} x {r.Height} rectangle");
        break;
    default:
        WriteLine("<unknown shape>");
        break;
    case null:
        throw new ArgumentNullException(nameof(shape));
}

Prior to C# 7

No.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/peterhal/archive/2005/07/05/435760.aspx

We get a lot of requests for addditions to the C# language and today I'm going to talk about one of the more common ones - switch on type. Switch on type looks like a pretty useful and straightforward feature: Add a switch-like construct which switches on the type of the expression, rather than the value. This might look something like this:

switch typeof(e) {
        case int:    ... break;
        case string: ... break;
        case double: ... break;
        default:     ... break;
}

This kind of statement would be extremely useful for adding virtual method like dispatch over a disjoint type hierarchy, or over a type hierarchy containing types that you don't own. Seeing an example like this, you could easily conclude that the feature would be straightforward and useful. It might even get you thinking "Why don't those #*&%$ lazy C# language designers just make my life easier and add this simple, timesaving language feature?"

Unfortunately, like many 'simple' language features, type switch is not as simple as it first appears. The troubles start when you look at a more significant, and no less important, example like this:

class C {}
interface I {}
class D : C, I {}

switch typeof(e) {
case C: … break;
case I: … break;
default: … break;
}

How to check how many letters are in a string in java?

If you are counting letters, the above solution will fail for some unicode symbols. For example for these 5 characters sample.length() will return 6 instead of 5:

String sample = "\u760c\u0444\u03b3\u03b5\ud800\udf45"; // ???e

The codePointCount function was introduced in Java 1.5 and I understand gives better results for glyphs etc

sample.codePointCount(0, sample.length()) // returns 5

Reading a binary input stream into a single byte array in Java

I believe buffer length needs to be specified, as memory is finite and you may run out of it

Example:

InputStream in = new FileInputStream(strFileName);
    long length = fileFileName.length();

    if (length > Integer.MAX_VALUE) {
        throw new IOException("File is too large!");
    }

    byte[] bytes = new byte[(int) length];

    int offset = 0;
    int numRead = 0;

    while (offset < bytes.length && (numRead = in.read(bytes, offset, bytes.length - offset)) >= 0) {
        offset += numRead;
    }

    if (offset < bytes.length) {
        throw new IOException("Could not completely read file " + fileFileName.getName());
    }

    in.close();

What ports need to be open for TortoiseSVN to authenticate (clear text) and commit?

What's the first part of your Subversion repository URL?

  • If your URL looks like: http://subversion/repos/, then you're probably going over Port 80.
  • If your URL looks like: https://subversion/repos/, then you're probably going over Port 443.
  • If your URL looks like: svn://subversion/, then you're probably going over Port 3690.
  • If your URL looks like: svn+ssh://subversion/repos/, then you're probably going over Port 22.
  • If your URL contains a port number like: http://subversion/repos:8080, then you're using that port.

I can't guarantee the first four since it's possible to reconfigure everything to use different ports, of if you go through a proxy of some sort.

If you're using a VPN, you may have to configure your VPN client to reroute these to their correct ports. A lot of places don't configure their correctly VPNs to do this type of proxying. It's either because they have some sort of anal-retentive IT person who's being overly security conscious, or because they simply don't know any better. Even worse, they'll give you a client where this stuff can't be reconfigured.

The only way around that is to log into a local machine over the VPN, and then do everything from that system.

Meaning of $? (dollar question mark) in shell scripts

$? returns the exit value of the last executed command. echo $? prints that value on console. zero implies a successful execution while non-zero values are mapped to various reason for failure.

Hence when scripting; I tend to use the following syntax

if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
 # do something
else
 # do something else

The comparison is to be done on equals to 0 or not equals 0.

how to evenly distribute elements in a div next to each other?

Make all spans used inline-block elements. Create an empty stretch span with a 100% width beneath the list of spans containing the menu items. Next make the div containing the spans text-align: justified. This would then force the inline-block elements [your menu items] to evenly distribute.

Asserting successive calls to a mock method

assert_has_calls is another approach to this problem.

From the docs:

assert_has_calls (calls, any_order=False)

assert the mock has been called with the specified calls. The mock_calls list is checked for the calls.

If any_order is False (the default) then the calls must be sequential. There can be extra calls before or after the specified calls.

If any_order is True then the calls can be in any order, but they must all appear in mock_calls.

Example:

>>> from unittest.mock import call, Mock
>>> mock = Mock(return_value=None)
>>> mock(1)
>>> mock(2)
>>> mock(3)
>>> mock(4)
>>> calls = [call(2), call(3)]
>>> mock.assert_has_calls(calls)
>>> calls = [call(4), call(2), call(3)]
>>> mock.assert_has_calls(calls, any_order=True)

Can you control how an SVG's stroke-width is drawn?

As people above have noted you'll either have to recalculate an offset to the stroke's path coordinates or double its width and then mask one side or the other, because not only does SVG not natively support Illustrator's stroke alignment, but PostScript doesn't either.

The specification for strokes in Adobe's PostScript Manual 2nd edition states: "4.5.1 Stroking: The stroke operator draws a line of some thickness along the current path. For each straight or curved segment in the path, stroke draws a line that is centered on the segment with sides parallel to the segment." (emphasis theirs)

The rest of the specification has no attributes for offsetting the line's position. When Illustrator lets you align inside or outside, it's recalculating the actual path's offset (because it's still computationally cheaper than overprinting then masking). The path coordinates in the .ai document are reference, not what gets rastered or exported to a final format.

Because Inkscape's native format is spec SVG, it can't offer a feature the spec lacks.

How to convert current date to epoch timestamp?

Use strptime to parse the time, and call time() on it to get the Unix timestamp.

Multiple contexts with the same path error running web service in Eclipse using Tomcat

How do I commit only some files?

If you have already staged files, simply unstage them:

git reset HEAD [file-name-A.ext] [file-name-B.ext]

Then add them bit by bit back in.

How to find numbers from a string?

Regular expressions are built to parse. While the syntax can take a while to pick up on this approach is very efficient, and is very flexible for handling more complex string extractions/replacements

Sub Tester()
     MsgBox CleanString("3d1fgd4g1dg5d9gdg")
End Sub

Function CleanString(strIn As String) As String
    Dim objRegex

How to list all properties of a PowerShell object

I like

 Get-WmiObject Win32_computersystem | format-custom *

That seems to expand everything.

There's also a show-object command in the PowerShellCookbook module that does it in a GUI. Jeffrey Snover, the PowerShell creator, uses it in his unplugged videos (recommended).

Although most often I use

Get-WmiObject Win32_computersystem | fl *

It avoids the .format.ps1xml file that defines a table or list view for the object type, if there are any. The format file may even define column headers that don't match any property names.

Javascript Append Child AFTER Element

You need to append the new element to existing element's parent before element's next sibling. Like:

var parentGuest = document.getElementById("one");
var childGuest = document.createElement("li");
childGuest.id = "two";
parentGuest.parentNode.insertBefore(childGuest, parentGuest.nextSibling);

Or if you want just append it, then:

var parentGuest = document.getElementById("one");
var childGuest = document.createElement("li");
childGuest.id = "two";
parentGuest.parentNode.appendChild(childGuest);

Why can't I use a list as a dict key in python?

A Dictionary is a HashMap it stores map of your keys, value converted to a hashed new key and value mapping.

something like (psuedo code):

{key : val}
hash(key) = val

If you are wondering which are available options that can be used as key for your dictionary. Then

anything which is hashable(can be converted to hash, and hold static value i.e immutable so as to make a hashed key as stated above) is eligible but as list or set objects can be vary on the go so hash(key) should also needs to vary just to be in sync with your list or set.

You can try :

hash(<your key here>)

If it works fine it can be used as key for your dictionary or else convert it to something hashable.

Inshort :

  1. Convert that list to tuple(<your list>).
  2. Convert that list to str(<your list>).

Java SSLException: hostname in certificate didn't match

A cleaner approach ( only for test environment) in httpcliet4.3.3 is as follows.

CloseableHttpClient httpclient = HttpClients.custom().setSSLSocketFactory(sslsf).build();

Min/Max-value validators in asp.net mvc

Here is how I would write a validator for MaxValue

public class MaxValueAttribute : ValidationAttribute
    {
        private readonly int _maxValue;

        public MaxValueAttribute(int maxValue)
        {
            _maxValue = maxValue;
        }

        public override bool IsValid(object value)
        {
            return (int) value <= _maxValue;
        }
    }

The MinValue Attribute should be fairly the same

How do I set up the database.yml file in Rails?

The database.yml is a file that is created with new rails applications in /config and defines the database configurations that your application will use in different environments. Read this for details.

Example database.yml:

  adapter: sqlite3
  database: db/development.sqlite3
  pool: 5
  timeout: 5000

test:
  adapter: sqlite3
  database: db/test.sqlite3
  pool: 5
  timeout: 5000

production:
  adapter: mysql
  encoding: utf8
  database: your_db
  username: root
  password: your_pass
  socket: /tmp/mysql.sock
  host: your_db_ip     #defaults to 127.0.0.1

How to auto-scroll to end of div when data is added?

Apply function to each column in a data frame observing each columns existing data type

The reason that max works with apply is that apply is coercing your data frame to a matrix first, and a matrix can only hold one data type. So you end up with a matrix of characters. sapply is just a wrapper for lapply, so it is not surprising that both yield the same error.

The default behavior when you create a data frame is for categorical columns to be stored as factors. Unless you specify that it is an ordered factor, operations like max and min will be undefined, since R is assuming that you've created an unordered factor.

You can change this behavior by specifying options(stringsAsFactors = FALSE), which will change the default for the entire session, or you can pass stringsAsFactors = FALSE in the data.frame() construction call itself. Note that this just means that min and max will assume "alphabetical" ordering by default.

Or you can manually specify an ordering for each factor, although I doubt that's what you want to do.

Regardless, sapply will generally yield an atomic vector, which will entail converting everything to characters in many cases. One way around this is as follows:

#Some test data
d <- data.frame(v1 = runif(10), v2 = letters[1:10],
                v3 = rnorm(10), v4 = LETTERS[1:10],stringsAsFactors = TRUE)

d[4,] <- NA

#Similar function to DWin's answer
fun <- function(x){
    if(is.numeric(x)){max(x,na.rm = 1)}
    else{max(as.character(x),na.rm=1)}
}

#Use colwise from plyr package
colwise(fun)(d)
         v1 v2       v3 v4

Need to remove href values when printing in Chrome

I encountered a similar problem only with a nested img in my anchor:

<a href="some/link">
   <img src="some/src">
</a>

When I applied

@media print {
   a[href]:after {
      content: none !important;
   }
}

I lost my img and the entire anchor width for some reason, so instead I used:

@media print {
   a[href]:after {
      visibility: hidden;
   }
}

which worked perfectly.

Bonus tip: inspect print preview

How to hide only the Close (x) button?

Well, you can hide it, by removing the entire system menu:

private const int WS_SYSMENU = 0x80000;
protected override CreateParams CreateParams
{
    get
    {
        CreateParams cp = base.CreateParams;
        cp.Style &= ~WS_SYSMENU;
        return cp;
    }
}

Of course, doing so removes the minimize and maximize buttons.

If you keep the system menu but remove the close item then the close button remains but is disabled.

The final alternative is to paint the non-client area yourself. That's pretty hard to get right.

Align Div at bottom on main Div

This isn't really possible in HTML unless you use absolute positioning or javascript. So one solution would be to give this CSS to #bottom_link:

#bottom_link {
    position:absolute;
    bottom:0;
}

Otherwise you'd have to use some javascript. Here's a jQuery block that should do the trick, depending on the simplicity of the page.

$('#bottom_link').css({
    position: 'relative',
    top: $(this).parent().height() - $(this).height()
});

Why does "return list.sort()" return None, not the list?

Python has two kinds of sorts: a sort method (or "member function") and a sort function. The sort method operates on the contents of the object named -- think of it as an action that the object is taking to re-order itself. The sort function is an operation over the data represented by an object and returns a new object with the same contents in a sorted order.

Given a list of integers named l the list itself will be reordered if we call l.sort():

>>> l = [1, 5, 2341, 467, 213, 123]
>>> l.sort()
>>> l
[1, 5, 123, 213, 467, 2341]

This method has no return value. But what if we try to assign the result of l.sort()?

>>> l = [1, 5, 2341, 467, 213, 123]
>>> r = l.sort()
>>> print(r)
None

r now equals actually nothing. This is one of those weird, somewhat annoying details that a programmer is likely to forget about after a period of absence from Python (which is why I am writing this, so I don't forget again).

The function sorted(), on the other hand, will not do anything to the contents of l, but will return a new, sorted list with the same contents as l:

>>> l = [1, 5, 2341, 467, 213, 123]
>>> r = sorted(l)
>>> l
[1, 5, 2341, 467, 213, 123]
>>> r
[1, 5, 123, 213, 467, 2341]

Be aware that the returned value is not a deep copy, so be cautious about side-effecty operations over elements contained within the list as usual:

>>> spam = [8, 2, 4, 7]
>>> eggs = [3, 1, 4, 5]
>>> l = [spam, eggs]
>>> r = sorted(l)
>>> l
[[8, 2, 4, 7], [3, 1, 4, 5]]
>>> r
[[3, 1, 4, 5], [8, 2, 4, 7]]
>>> spam.sort()
>>> eggs.sort()
>>> l
[[2, 4, 7, 8], [1, 3, 4, 5]]
>>> r
[[1, 3, 4, 5], [2, 4, 7, 8]]

Programmatically change UITextField Keyboard type

Prevent line-break of span element

white-space: nowrap is the correct solution but it will prevent any break in a line. If you only want to prevent line breaks between two elements it gets a bit more complicated:

<p>
    <span class="text">Some text</span>
    <span class="icon"></span>
</p>

To prevent breaks between the spans but to allow breaks between "Some" and "text" can be done by:

p {
    white-space: nowrap;
}

.text {
    white-space: normal;
}

That's good enough for Firefox. In Chrome you additionally need to replace the whitespace between the spans with an &nbsp;. (Removing the whitespace doesn't work.)

How do you rebase the current branch's changes on top of changes being merged in?

You've got what rebase does backwards. git rebase master does what you're asking for — takes the changes on the current branch (since its divergence from master) and replays them on top of master, then sets the head of the current branch to be the head of that new history. It doesn't replay the changes from master on top of the current branch.

How to implement one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many relationships while designing tables?

One to one (1-1) relationship: This is relationship between primary & foreign key (primary key relating to foreign key only one record). this is one to one relationship.

One to Many (1-M) relationship: This is also relationship between primary & foreign keys relationships but here primary key relating to multiple records (i.e. Table A have book info and Table B have multiple publishers of one book).

Many to Many (M-M): Many to many includes two dimensions, explained fully as below with sample.

-- This table will hold our phone calls.
CREATE TABLE dbo.PhoneCalls
(
   ID INT IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL,
   CallTime DATETIME NOT NULL DEFAULT GETDATE(),

What are the time complexities of various data structures?

Arrays

  • Set, Check element at a particular index: O(1)
  • Searching: O(n) if array is unsorted and O(log n) if array is sorted and something like a binary search is used,
  • As pointed out by Aivean, there is no Delete operation available on Arrays. We can symbolically delete an element by setting it to some specific value, e.g. -1, 0, etc. depending on our requirements
  • Similarly, Insert for arrays is basically Set as mentioned in the beginning

ArrayList:

  • Add: Amortized O(1)
  • Remove: O(n)
  • Contains: O(n)
  • Size: O(1)

Linked List:

  • Inserting: O(1), if done at the head, O(n) if anywhere else since we have to reach that position by traveseing the linkedlist linearly.
  • Deleting: O(1), if done at the head, O(n) if anywhere else since we have to reach that position by traveseing the linkedlist linearly.
  • Searching: O(n)

Doubly-Linked List:

  • Inserting: O(1), if done at the head or tail, O(n) if anywhere else since we have to reach that position by traveseing the linkedlist linearly.
  • Deleting: O(1), if done at the head or tail, O(n) if anywhere else since we have to reach that position by traveseing the linkedlist linearly.
  • Searching: O(n)

Stack:

  • Push: O(1)
  • Pop: O(1)
  • Top: O(1)
  • Search (Something like lookup, as a special operation): O(n) (I guess so)

Queue/Deque/Circular Queue:

  • Insert: O(1)
  • Remove: O(1)
  • Size: O(1)

Binary Search Tree:

  • Insert, delete and search: Average case: O(log n), Worst Case: O(n)

Red-Black Tree:

  • Insert, delete and search: Average case: O(log n), Worst Case: O(log n)

Heap/PriorityQueue (min/max):

  • Find Min/Find Max: O(1)
  • Insert: O(log n)
  • Delete Min/Delete Max: O(log n)
  • Extract Min/Extract Max: O(log n)
  • Lookup, Delete (if at all provided): O(n), we will have to scan all the elements as they are not ordered like BST

HashMap/Hashtable/HashSet:

  • Insert/Delete: O(1) amortized
  • Re-size/hash: O(n)
  • Contains: O(1)

Display last git commit comment

Generally:

git log -n

will show you the last n commit messages

More elegantly - if you want a quick overview of your commits

git log --oneline -n

This will Show just the first line of the last n commit messages.

You can save this as a git alias or a shell alias with a shorter command. I've got it in my shell as glog, for example, and I can see my last 10 commit messages with glog -10.

Disable color change of anchor tag when visited

If you just want the anchor color to stay the same as the anchor's parent element you can leverage inherit:

a, a:visited, a:hover, a:active {
  color: inherit;
}

Notice there is no need to repeat the rule for each selector; just use a comma separated list of selectors (order matters for anchor pseudo elements). Also, you can apply the pseudo selectors to a class if you want to selectively disable the special anchor colors:

.special-link, .special-link:visited, .special-link:hover, .special-link:active {
  color: inherit;
}

Your question only asks about the visited state, but I assumed you meant all of the states. You can remove the other selectors if you want to allow color changes on all but visited.

Ellipsis for overflow text in dropdown boxes

NOTE: As of July 2020, text-overflow: ellipsis works for <select> on Chrome

HTML is limited in what it specifies for form controls. That leaves room for operating system and browser makers to do what they think is appropriate on that platform (like the iPhone’s modal select which, when open, looks totally different from the traditional pop-up menu).

If it bugs you, you can use a customizable replacement, like Chosen, which looks distinct from the native select.

Or, file a bug against a major operating system or browser. For all we know, the way text is cut off in selects might be the result of a years-old oversight that everyone copied, and it might be time for a change.

Why are iframes considered dangerous and a security risk?

As soon as you're displaying content from another domain, you're basically trusting that domain not to serve-up malware.

There's nothing wrong with iframes per se. If you control the content of the iframe, they're perfectly safe.

Download a file from NodeJS Server using Express

For static files like pdfs, Word docs, etc. just use Express's static function in your config:

// Express config
var app = express().configure(function () {
    this.use('/public', express.static('public')); // <-- This right here
});

And then just put all your files inside that 'public' folder, for example:

/public/docs/my_word_doc.docx

And then a regular old link will allow the user to download it:

<a href="public/docs/my_word_doc.docx">My Word Doc</a>

How do I fix 'Invalid character value for cast specification' on a date column in flat file?

The proper data type for "2010-12-20 00:00:00.0000000" value is DATETIME2(7) / DT_DBTIME2 ().

But used data type for CYCLE_DATE field is DATETIME - DT_DATE. This means milliseconds precision with accuracy down to every third millisecond (yyyy-mm-ddThh:mi:ss.mmL where L can be 0,3 or 7).

The solution is to change CYCLE_DATE date type to DATETIME2 - DT_DBTIME2.

Python: Get relative path from comparing two absolute paths

os.path.commonprefix() and os.path.relpath() are your friends:

>>> print os.path.commonprefix(['/usr/var/log', '/usr/var/security'])
'/usr/var'
>>> print os.path.commonprefix(['/tmp', '/usr/var']) # No common prefix: the root is the common prefix
'/'

You can thus test whether the common prefix is one of the paths, i.e. if one of the paths is a common ancestor:

paths = […, …, …]
common_prefix = os.path.commonprefix(list_of_paths)
if common_prefix in paths:
    …

You can then find the relative paths:

relative_paths = [os.path.relpath(path, common_prefix) for path in paths]

You can even handle more than two paths, with this method, and test whether all the paths are all below one of them.

PS: depending on how your paths look like, you might want to perform some normalization first (this is useful in situations where one does not know whether they always end with '/' or not, or if some of the paths are relative). Relevant functions include os.path.abspath() and os.path.normpath().

PPS: as Peter Briggs mentioned in the comments, the simple approach described above can fail:

>>> os.path.commonprefix(['/usr/var', '/usr/var2/log'])
'/usr/var'

even though /usr/var is not a common prefix of the paths. Forcing all paths to end with '/' before calling commonprefix() solves this (specific) problem.

PPPS: as bluenote10 mentioned, adding a slash does not solve the general problem. Here is his followup question: How to circumvent the fallacy of Python's os.path.commonprefix?

PPPPS: starting with Python 3.4, we have pathlib, a module that provides a saner path manipulation environment. I guess that the common prefix of a set of paths can be obtained by getting all the prefixes of each path (with PurePath.parents()), taking the intersection of all these parent sets, and selecting the longest common prefix.

PPPPPS: Python 3.5 introduced a proper solution to this question: os.path.commonpath(), which returns a valid path.

Displaying a Table in Django from Database

If you want to table do following steps:-

views.py:

def view_info(request):
    objs=Model_name.objects.all()
    ............
    return render(request,'template_name',{'objs':obj})

.html page

 {% for item in objs %}
    <tr>
         <td>{{ item.field1 }}</td>
         <td>{{ item.field2 }}</td>
         <td>{{ item.field3 }}</td>
         <td>{{ item.field4 }}</td>
    </tr>
       {% endfor %}

Jquery mouseenter() vs mouseover()

This example demonstrates the difference between the mousemove, mouseenter and mouseover events:

https://jsfiddle.net/z8g613yd/

HTML:

<div onmousemove="myMoveFunction()">
    <p>onmousemove: <br> <span id="demo">Mouse over me!</span></p>
</div>

<div onmouseenter="myEnterFunction()">
    <p>onmouseenter: <br> <span id="demo2">Mouse over me!</span></p>
</div>

<div onmouseover="myOverFunction()">
    <p>onmouseover: <br> <span id="demo3">Mouse over me!</span></p>
</div>

CSS:

div {
    width: 200px;
    height: 100px;
    border: 1px solid black;
    margin: 10px;
    float: left;
    padding: 30px;
    text-align: center;
    background-color: lightgray;
}

p {
    background-color: white;
    height: 50px;
}

p span {
    background-color: #86fcd4;
    padding: 0 20px;
}

JS:

var x = 0;
var y = 0;
var z = 0;

function myMoveFunction() {
    document.getElementById("demo").innerHTML = z += 1;
}

function myEnterFunction() {
    document.getElementById("demo2").innerHTML = x += 1;
}

function myOverFunction() {
    document.getElementById("demo3").innerHTML = y += 1;
}
  • onmousemove : occurs every time the mouse pointer is moved over the div element.
  • onmouseenter : only occurs when the mouse pointer enters the div element.
  • onmouseover : occurs when the mouse pointer enters the div element, and its child elements (p and span).

Print a list in reverse order with range()?

range(9,-1,-1)
    [9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0]

Is the correct form. If you use

reversed(range(10))

you wont get a 0 case. For instance, say your 10 isn't a magic number and a variable you're using to lookup start from reverse. If your n case is 0, reversed(range(0)) will not execute which is wrong if you by chance have a single object in the zero index.

Oracle PL/SQL string compare issue

To the first question:

Probably the message wasn't print out because you have the output turned off. Use these commands to turn it back on:

set serveroutput on
exec dbms_output.enable(1000000);

On the second question:

My PLSQL is quite rusty so I can't give you a full snippet, but you'll need to loop over the result set of the SQL query and CONCAT all the strings together.

LINQ with groupby and count

After calling GroupBy, you get a series of groups IEnumerable<Grouping>, where each Grouping itself exposes the Key used to create the group and also is an IEnumerable<T> of whatever items are in your original data set. You just have to call Count() on that Grouping to get the subtotal.

foreach(var line in data.GroupBy(info => info.metric)
                        .Select(group => new {
                             Metric = group.Key,
                             Count = group.Count()
                        })
                        .OrderBy(x => x.Metric))
{
     Console.WriteLine("{0} {1}", line.Metric, line.Count);
}

> This was a brilliantly quick reply but I'm having a bit of an issue with the first line, specifically "data.groupby(info=>info.metric)"

I'm assuming you already have a list/array of some class that looks like

class UserInfo {
    string name;
    int metric;
    ..etc..
}
...
List<UserInfo> data = ..... ;

When you do data.GroupBy(x => x.metric), it means "for each element x in the IEnumerable defined by data, calculate it's .metric, then group all the elements with the same metric into a Grouping and return an IEnumerable of all the resulting groups. Given your example data set of

    <DATA>           | Grouping Key (x=>x.metric) |
joe  1 01/01/2011 5  | 1
jane 0 01/02/2011 9  | 0
john 2 01/03/2011 0  | 2
jim  3 01/04/2011 1  | 3
jean 1 01/05/2011 3  | 1
jill 2 01/06/2011 5  | 2
jeb  0 01/07/2011 3  | 0
jenn 0 01/08/2011 7  | 0

it would result in the following result after the groupby:

(Group 1): [joe  1 01/01/2011 5, jean 1 01/05/2011 3]
(Group 0): [jane 0 01/02/2011 9, jeb  0 01/07/2011 3, jenn 0 01/08/2011 7]
(Group 2): [john 2 01/03/2011 0, jill 2 01/06/2011 5]
(Group 3): [jim  3 01/04/2011 1]

Getting an element from a Set

Why:

It seems that Set plays a useful role in providing a means of comparison. It is designed not to store duplicate elements.

Because of this intention/design, if one were to get() a reference to the stored object, then mutate it, it is possible that the design intentions of Set could be thwarted and could cause unexpected behavior.

From the JavaDocs

Great care must be exercised if mutable objects are used as set elements. The behavior of a set is not specified if the value of an object is changed in a manner that affects equals comparisons while the object is an element in the set.

How:

Now that Streams have been introduced one can do the following

mySet.stream()
.filter(object -> object.property.equals(myProperty))
.findFirst().get();

Check whether a string contains a substring

Case Insensitive Substring Example

This is an extension of Eugene's answer, which converts the strings to lower case before checking for the substring:

if (index(lc($str), lc($substr)) != -1) {
    print "$str contains $substr\n";
}

How to remove backslash on json_encode() function?

Simpler way would be

$mystring = json_encode($my_json,JSON_UNESCAPED_SLASHES);

How can I read user input from the console?

Console.Read() takes a character and returns the ascii value of that character.So if you want to take the symbol that was entered by the user instead of its ascii value (ex:if input is 5 then symbol = 5, ascii value is 53), you have to parse it using int.parse() but it raises a compilation error because the return value of Console.Read() is already int type. So you can get the work done by using Console.ReadLine() instead of Console.Read() as follows.

int userInput = int.parse(Console.ReadLine());

here, the output of the Console.ReadLine() would be a string containing a number such as "53".By passing it to the int.Parse() we can convert it to int type.
