Programs & Examples On #Specman

Specman is a simulator for `e` (IEEE 1647), an Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) hardware verification language that enables constrained-random stimulus generation and coverage.

Pythonic way of checking if a condition holds for any element of a list

Python has a built in any() function for exactly this purpose.

MySQL - How to select data by string length

You are looking for CHAR_LENGTH() to get the number of characters in a string.

For multi-byte charsets LENGTH() will give you the number of bytes the string occupies, while CHAR_LENGTH() will return the number of characters.

Iterator Loop vs index loop

With a vector iterators do no offer any real advantage. The syntax is uglier, longer to type and harder to read.

Iterating over a vector using iterators is not faster and is not safer (actually if the vector is possibly resized during the iteration using iterators will put you in big troubles).

The idea of having a generic loop that works when you will change later the container type is also mostly nonsense in real cases. Unfortunately the dark side of a strictly typed language without serious typing inference (a bit better now with C++11, however) is that you need to say what is the type of everything at each step. If you change your mind later you will still need to go around and change everything. Moreover different containers have very different trade-offs and changing container type is not something that happens that often.

The only case in which iteration should be kept if possible generic is when writing template code, but that (I hope for you) is not the most frequent case.

The only problem present in your explicit index loop is that size returns an unsigned value (a design bug of C++) and comparison between signed and unsigned is dangerous and surprising, so better avoided. If you use a decent compiler with warnings enabled there should be a diagnostic on that.

Note that the solution is not to use an unsiged as the index, because arithmetic between unsigned values is also apparently illogical (it's modulo arithmetic, and x-1 may be bigger than x). You instead should cast the size to an integer before using it. It may make some sense to use unsigned sizes and indexes (paying a LOT of attention to every expression you write) only if you're working on a 16 bit C++ implementation (16 bit was the reason for having unsigned values in sizes).

As a typical mistake that unsigned size may introduce consider:

void drawPolyline(const std::vector<P2d>& points)
{
    for (int i=0; i<points.size()-1; i++)
        drawLine(points[i], points[i+1]);
}

Here the bug is present because if you pass an empty points vector the value points.size()-1 will be a huge positive number, making you looping into a segfault. A working solution could be

for (int i=1; i<points.size(); i++)
    drawLine(points[i - 1], points[i]);

but I personally prefer to always remove unsinged-ness with int(v.size()).

PS: If you really don't want to think by to yourself to the implications and simply want an expert to tell you then consider that a quite a few world recognized C++ experts agree and expressed opinions on that unsigned values are a bad idea except for bit manipulations.

Discovering the ugliness of using iterators in the case of iterating up to second-last is left as an exercise for the reader.

convert array into DataFrame in Python

In general you can use pandas rename function here. Given your dataframe you could change to a new name like this. If you had more columns you could also rename those in the dictionary. The 0 is the current name of your column

import pandas as pd
import numpy as np
e = np.random.normal(size=100)
e_dataframe = pd.DataFrame(e)

e_dataframe.rename(index=str, columns={0:'new_column_name'})

Starting a node.js server

Run cmd and then run node server.js. In your example, you are trying to use the REPL to run your command, which is not going to work. The ellipsis is node.js expecting more tokens before closing the current scope (you can type code in and run it on the fly here)

How to use WPF Background Worker

You may want to also look into using Task instead of background workers.

The easiest way to do this is in your example is Task.Run(InitializationThread);.

There are several benefits to using tasks instead of background workers. For example, the new async/await features in .net 4.5 use Task for threading. Here is some documentation about Task https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.threading.tasks.task

How to get the current location latitude and longitude in android

Reading a binary file with python

Read the binary file content like this:

with open(fileName, mode='rb') as file: # b is important -> binary
    fileContent = file.read()

then "unpack" binary data using struct.unpack:

The start bytes: struct.unpack("iiiii", fileContent[:20])

The body: ignore the heading bytes and the trailing byte (= 24); The remaining part forms the body, to know the number of bytes in the body do an integer division by 4; The obtained quotient is multiplied by the string 'i' to create the correct format for the unpack method:

struct.unpack("i" * ((len(fileContent) -24) // 4), fileContent[20:-4])

The end byte: struct.unpack("i", fileContent[-4:])

Postgres password authentication fails

I came across this question, and the answers here didn't work for me; i couldn't figure out why i can't login and got the above error.

It turns out that postgresql saves usernames lowercase, but during authentication it uses both upper- and lowercase.

CREATE USER myNewUser WITH PASSWORD 'passWord';

will create a user with the username 'mynewuser' and password 'passWord'.

This means you have to authenticate with 'mynewuser', and not with 'myNewUser'. For a newbie in pgsql like me, this was confusing. I hope it helps others who run into this problem.

Is there a way for non-root processes to bind to "privileged" ports on Linux?

At startup:

iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 8080

Then you can bind to the port you forward to.

Why are unnamed namespaces used and what are their benefits?

Unnamed namespaces are a utility to make an identifier translation unit local. They behave as if you would choose a unique name per translation unit for a namespace:

namespace unique { /* empty */ }
using namespace unique;
namespace unique { /* namespace body. stuff in here */ }

The extra step using the empty body is important, so you can already refer within the namespace body to identifiers like ::name that are defined in that namespace, since the using directive already took place.

This means you can have free functions called (for example) help that can exist in multiple translation units, and they won't clash at link time. The effect is almost identical to using the static keyword used in C which you can put in in the declaration of identifiers. Unnamed namespaces are a superior alternative, being able to even make a type translation unit local.

namespace { int a1; }
static int a2;

Both a's are translation unit local and won't clash at link time. But the difference is that the a1 in the anonymous namespace gets a unique name.

Read the excellent article at comeau-computing Why is an unnamed namespace used instead of static? (Archive.org mirror).

How does GPS in a mobile phone work exactly?

There's 3 satellites at least that you must be able to receive from of the 24-32 out there, and they each broadcast a time from a synchronized atomic clock. The differences in those times that you receive at any one time tell you how long the broadcast took to reach you, and thus where you are in relation to the satellites. So, it sort of reads from something, but it doesn't connect to that thing. Note that this doesn't tell you your orientation, many GPSes fake that (and speed) by interpolating data points.

If you don't count the cost of the receiver, it's a free service. Apparently there's higher resolution services out there that are restricted to military use. Those are likely a fixed cost for a license to decrypt the signals along with a confidentiality agreement.

Now your device may support GPS tracking, in which case it might communicate, say via GPRS, to a database which will store the location the device has found itself to be at, so that multiple devices may be tracked. That would require some kind of connection.

Maps are either stored on the device or received over a connection. Navigation is computed based on those maps' databases. These likely are a licensed item with a cost associated, though if you use a service like Google Maps they have the license with NAVTEQ and others.

how to set background image in submit button?

Typically one would use one (or more) image tags, maybe in combination with setting div background images in css to act as the submit button. The actual submit would be done in javascript on the click event.

A tutorial on the subject.

How to find length of digits in an integer?

It can be done for integers quickly by using:

len(str(abs(1234567890)))

Which gets the length of the string of the absolute value of "1234567890"

abs returns the number WITHOUT any negatives (only the magnitude of the number), str casts/converts it to a string and len returns the string length of that string.

If you want it to work for floats, you can use either of the following:

# Ignore all after decimal place
len(str(abs(0.1234567890)).split(".")[0])

# Ignore just the decimal place
len(str(abs(0.1234567890)))-1

For future reference.

Shell script not running, command not found

Unix has a variable called PATH that is a list of directories where to find commands.

$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/Users/david/bin

If I type a command foo at the command line, my shell will first see if there's an executable command /usr/local/bin/foo. If there is, it will execute /usr/local/bin/foo. If not, it will see if there's an executable command /usr/bin/foo and if not there, it will look to see if /bin/foo exists, etc. until it gets to /Users/david/bin/foo.

If it can't find a command foo in any of those directories, it tell me command not found.

There are several ways I can handle this issue:

  • Use the commandbash foo since foo is a shell script.
  • Include the directory name when you eecute the command like /Users/david/foo or $PWD/foo or just plain ./foo.
  • Change your $PATH variable to add the directory that contains your commands to the PATH.

You can modify $HOME/.bash_profile or $HOME/.profile if .bash_profile doesn't exist. I did that to add in /usr/local/bin which I placed first in my path. This way, I can override the standard commands that are in the OS. For example, I have Ant 1.9.1, but the Mac came with Ant 1.8.4. I put my ant command in /usr/local/bin, so my version of antwill execute first. I also added $HOME/bin to the end of the PATH for my own commands. If I had a file like the one you want to execute, I'll place it in $HOME/bin to execute it.

JavaScript OOP in NodeJS: how?

This is an example that works out of the box. If you want less "hacky", you should use inheritance library or such.

Well in a file animal.js you would write:

var method = Animal.prototype;

function Animal(age) {
    this._age = age;
}

method.getAge = function() {
    return this._age;
};

module.exports = Animal;

To use it in other file:

var Animal = require("./animal.js");

var john = new Animal(3);

If you want a "sub class" then inside mouse.js:

var _super = require("./animal.js").prototype,
    method = Mouse.prototype = Object.create( _super );

method.constructor = Mouse;

function Mouse() {
    _super.constructor.apply( this, arguments );
}
//Pointless override to show super calls
//note that for performance (e.g. inlining the below is impossible)
//you should do
//method.$getAge = _super.getAge;
//and then use this.$getAge() instead of super()
method.getAge = function() {
    return _super.getAge.call(this);
};

module.exports = Mouse;

Also you can consider "Method borrowing" instead of vertical inheritance. You don't need to inherit from a "class" to use its method on your class. For instance:

 var method = List.prototype;
 function List() {

 }

 method.add = Array.prototype.push;

 ...

 var a = new List();
 a.add(3);
 console.log(a[0]) //3;

Declare variable MySQL trigger

Agree with neubert about the DECLARE statements, this will fix syntax error. But I would suggest you to avoid using openning cursors, they may be slow.

For your task: use INSERT...SELECT statement which will help you to copy data from one table to another using only one query.

INSERT ... SELECT Syntax.

Converting an array to a function arguments list

Yes. In current versions of JS you can use:

app[func]( ...args );

Users of ES5 and older will need to use the .apply() method:

app[func].apply( this, args );

Read up on these methods at MDN:

What is the proper way to check and uncheck a checkbox in HTML5?

<input type="checkbox" checked />

HTML5 does not require attributes to have values

Read and write a String from text file

Simplest way to read a file in Swift > 4.0

 let path = Bundle.main.path(forResource: "data", ofType: "txt") // file path for file "data.txt"
        do {
            var text = try String(contentsOfFile: path!)
        }
        catch(_){print("error")}
    }

npm install hangs

Check your .npmrc file for a registry entry (which identifies a server acting as a package cache.)

For me, npm install would hang partway through, and it was because of a old / non-responsive server listed in my .npmrc file. Remove the line or comment it out:

>cat ~/.npmrc
#registry=http://oldserver:4873

(And/or check with your IT / project lead as to why it's not working ;)

Data binding to SelectedItem in a WPF Treeview

Answer with attached properties and no external dependencies, should the need ever arise!

You can create an attached property that is bindable and has a getter and setter:

public class TreeViewHelper
{
    private static Dictionary<DependencyObject, TreeViewSelectedItemBehavior> behaviors = new Dictionary<DependencyObject, TreeViewSelectedItemBehavior>();

    public static object GetSelectedItem(DependencyObject obj)
    {
        return (object)obj.GetValue(SelectedItemProperty);
    }

    public static void SetSelectedItem(DependencyObject obj, object value)
    {
        obj.SetValue(SelectedItemProperty, value);
    }

    // Using a DependencyProperty as the backing store for SelectedItem. This enables animation, styling, binding, etc...
    public static readonly DependencyProperty SelectedItemProperty =
        DependencyProperty.RegisterAttached("SelectedItem", typeof(object), typeof(TreeViewHelper), new UIPropertyMetadata(null, SelectedItemChanged));

    private static void SelectedItemChanged(DependencyObject obj, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e)
    {
        if (!(obj is TreeView))
            return;

        if (!behaviors.ContainsKey(obj))
            behaviors.Add(obj, new TreeViewSelectedItemBehavior(obj as TreeView));

        TreeViewSelectedItemBehavior view = behaviors[obj];
        view.ChangeSelectedItem(e.NewValue);
    }

    private class TreeViewSelectedItemBehavior
    {
        TreeView view;
        public TreeViewSelectedItemBehavior(TreeView view)
        {
            this.view = view;
            view.SelectedItemChanged += (sender, e) => SetSelectedItem(view, e.NewValue);
        }

        internal void ChangeSelectedItem(object p)
        {
            TreeViewItem item = (TreeViewItem)view.ItemContainerGenerator.ContainerFromItem(p);
            item.IsSelected = true;
        }
    }
}

Add the namespace declaration containing that class to your XAML and bind as follows (local is how I named the namespace declaration):

        <TreeView ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Root.Children}" local:TreeViewHelper.SelectedItem="{Binding Path=SelectedItem, Mode=TwoWay}">

    </TreeView>

Now you can bind the selected item, and also set it in your view model to change it programmatically, should that requirement ever arise. This is, of course, assuming that you implement INotifyPropertyChanged on that particular property.

Can I change a column from NOT NULL to NULL without dropping it?

Sure you can.

ALTER TABLE myTable ALTER COLUMN myColumn int NULL

Just substitute int for whatever datatype your column is.

Couldn't process file resx due to its being in the Internet or Restricted zone or having the mark of the web on the file

None of the suggestions above worked for me so I created a new file with a slightly different name and copied the contents of the offending file into the new file, renamed the offending file and renamed the new file with the offending file's name. Worked like a charm. Problem solved.

Passing command line arguments from Maven as properties in pom.xml

You can give variable names as project files. For instance in you plugin configuration give only one tag as below:-

<projectFile>${projectName}</projectFile>

Then on command line you can pass the project name as parameter:-

mvn [your-command] -DprojectName=[name of project]

GIT_DISCOVERY_ACROSS_FILESYSTEM not set

Check whether you are actually under a github repo.

So, listing of .git/ should give you results..otherwise you may be some level outside your repo.

Now, cd to your repo and you are good to go.

Where is jarsigner?

%JAVA_HOME%\bin\jarsigner

You can find jarsigner there. Install jdk first.

Chrome doesn't delete session cookies

I just had this problem of Chrome storing a Session ID but I do not like the idea of disabling the option to continue where I left off. I looked at the cookies for the website and found a Session ID cookie for the login page. Deleting that did not correct my problem. I search for the domain and found there was another Session ID cookie on the domain. Deleting both Session ID cookies manually fixed the problem and I did not close and reopen the browser which could have restored the cookies.

C# Convert string from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 (Latin1) H

Seems bit strange code. To get string from Utf8 byte stream all you need to do is:

string str = Encoding.UTF8.GetString(utf8ByteArray);

If you need to save iso-8859-1 byte stream to somewhere then just use: additional line of code for previous:

byte[] iso88591data = Encoding.GetEncoding("ISO-8859-1").GetBytes(str);

Import text file as single character string

The readr package has a function to do everything for you.

install.packages("readr") # you only need to do this one time on your system
library(readr)
mystring <- read_file("path/to/myfile.txt")

This replaces the version in the package stringr.

How to get disk capacity and free space of remote computer

I remote into the computer using Enter-PSsession pcName then I type Get-PSDrive

That will list all drives and space used and remaining. If you need to see all the info formated, pipe it to FL like this: Get-PSdrive | FL *

How can I replace every occurrence of a String in a file with PowerShell?

I prefer using the File-class of .NET and its static methods as seen in the following example.

$content = [System.IO.File]::ReadAllText("c:\bla.txt").Replace("[MYID]","MyValue")
[System.IO.File]::WriteAllText("c:\bla.txt", $content)

This has the advantage of working with a single String instead of a String-array as with Get-Content. The methods also take care of the encoding of the file (UTF-8 BOM, etc.) without you having to take care most of the time.

Also the methods don't mess up the line endings (Unix line endings that might be used) in contrast to an algorithm using Get-Content and piping through to Set-Content.

So for me: Fewer things that could break over the years.

A little-known thing when using .NET classes is that when you have typed in "[System.IO.File]::" in the PowerShell window you can press the Tab key to step through the methods there.

Plotting a 2D heatmap with Matplotlib

For a 2d numpy array, simply use imshow() may help you:

    plt.colorbar()
    plt.show()

test_array = np.arange(100 * 100).reshape(100, 100)
heatmap2d(test_array)

How can I copy the content of a branch to a new local branch?

With Git 2.15 (Q4 2017), "git branch" learned "-c/-C" to create a new branch by copying an existing one.

See commit c8b2cec (18 Jun 2017) by Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason (avar).
See commit 52d59cc, commit 5463caa (18 Jun 2017) by Sahil Dua (sahildua2305).
(Merged by Junio C Hamano -- gitster -- in commit 3b48045, 03 Oct 2017)

branch: add a --copy (-c) option to go with --move (-m)

Add the ability to --copy a branch and its reflog and configuration, this uses the same underlying machinery as the --move (-m) option except the reflog and configuration is copied instead of being moved.

This is useful for e.g. copying a topic branch to a new version, e.g. work to work-2 after submitting the work topic to the list, while preserving all the tracking info and other configuration that goes with the branch, and unlike --move keeping the other already-submitted branch around for reference.

Note: when copying a branch, you remain on your current branch.
As Junio C Hamano explains, the initial implementation of this new feature was modifying HEAD, which was not good:

When creating a new branch B by copying the branch A that happens to be the current branch, it also updates HEAD to point at the new branch.
It probably was made this way because "git branch -c A B" piggybacked its implementation on "git branch -m A B",

This does not match the usual expectation.
If I were sitting on a blue chair, and somebody comes and repaints it to red, I would accept ending up sitting on a chair that is now red (I am also OK to stand, instead, as there no longer is my favourite blue chair).

But if somebody creates a new red chair, modelling it after the blue chair I am sitting on, I do not expect to be booted off of the blue chair and ending up on sitting on the new red one.

How to avoid the need to specify the WSDL location in a CXF or JAX-WS generated webservice client?

Update for CXF 3.1.7

In my case I put the WSDL files in src/main/resources and added this path to my Srouces in Eclipse (Right Click on Project-> Build Path -> Configure Build Path...-> Source[Tab] -> Add Folder).

Here is how my pom file looks like and as can be seen there is NO wsdlLocation option needed:

       <plugin>
            <groupId>org.apache.cxf</groupId>
            <artifactId>cxf-codegen-plugin</artifactId>
            <version>${cxf.version}</version>
            <executions>
                <execution>
                    <id>generate-sources</id>
                    <phase>generate-sources</phase>
                    <configuration>
                        <sourceRoot>${project.build.directory}/generated/cxf</sourceRoot>
                        <wsdlOptions>
                            <wsdlOption>

                            </wsdlOption>
                        </wsdlOptions>
                    </configuration>
                    <goals>

"This project is incompatible with the current version of Visual Studio"

As for me, I realized there was another web project in the solution that my VS2017 was loading fine, so I copied over the ProjectTypeGuids element of it over to the project that wasn't loading. Its diff was:

-    <ProjectTypeGuids>{E3E379DF-F4C6-4180-9B81-6769533ABE47};{349c5851-65df-11da-9384-00065b846f21};{fae04ec0-301f-11d3-bf4b-00c04f79efbc}</ProjectTypeGuids>
+    <ProjectTypeGuids>{349c5851-65df-11da-9384-00065b846f21};{fae04ec0-301f-11d3-bf4b-00c04f79efbc}</ProjectTypeGuids>

After this, it loads. Don't ask me why.

Traversing text in Insert mode

While in insert mode, use CtrlO to go to normal mode for just one command:

CTRL-O h  move cursor left
CTRL-O l  move cursor right
CTRL-O j  move cursor down
CTRL-O k  move cursor up

which is probably the simplest way to do what you want and is easy to remember.

Other very useful control keys in insert mode:

CTRL-W delete word to the left of cursor
CTRL-O D delete everything to the right of cursor
CTRL-U delete everything to the left of cursor
CTRL-H    backspace/delete
CTRL-J insert newline (easier than reaching for the return key)
CTRL-T    indent current line
CTRL-D    un-indent current line

these will eliminate many wasteful switches back to normal mode.

In Chart.js set chart title, name of x axis and y axis?

If you have already set labels for your axis like how @andyhasit and @Marcus mentioned, and would like to change it at a later time, then you can try this:

What is PHPSESSID?

It's the identifier for your current session in PHP. If you delete it, you won't be able to access/make use of session variables. I'd suggest you keep it.

How to output to the console and file?

Here's a small improvement that to @UltraInstinct's Tee class, modified to be a context manager and also captures any exceptions.

import traceback
import sys

# Context manager that copies stdout and any exceptions to a log file
class Tee(object):
    def __init__(self, filename):
        self.file = open(filename, 'w')
        self.stdout = sys.stdout

    def __enter__(self):
        sys.stdout = self

    def __exit__(self, exc_type, exc_value, tb):
        sys.stdout = self.stdout
        if exc_type is not None:
            self.file.write(traceback.format_exc())
        self.file.close()

    def write(self, data):
        self.file.write(data)
        self.stdout.write(data)

    def flush(self):
        self.file.flush()
        self.stdout.flush()

To use the context manager:

print("Print")
with Tee('test.txt'):
    print("Print+Write")
    raise Exception("Test")
print("Print")

How to list files and folder in a dir (PHP)

use this function http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?t=71882

function getDirectory( $path = '.', $level = 0 ){

$ignore = array( 'cgi-bin', '.', '..' );
// Directories to ignore when listing output. Many hosts
// will deny PHP access to the cgi-bin.

$dh = @opendir( $path );
// Open the directory to the handle $dh

while( false !== ( $file = readdir( $dh ) ) ){
// Loop through the directory

    if( !in_array( $file, $ignore ) ){
    // Check that this file is not to be ignored

        $spaces = str_repeat( '&nbsp;', ( $level * 4 ) );
        // Just to add spacing to the list, to better
        // show the directory tree.

        if( is_dir( "$path/$file" ) ){
        // Its a directory, so we need to keep reading down...

            echo "<strong>$spaces $file</strong><br />";

// Close the directory handle
}

and call the function like that

getDirectory( "." );
// Get the current directory

getDirectory( "./files/includes" );
// Get contents of the "files/includes" folder

how to "execute" make file

As paxdiablo said make -f pax.mk would execute the pax.mk makefile, if you directly execute it by typing ./pax.mk, then you would get syntax error.

Also you can just type make if your file name is makefile/Makefile.

Suppose you have two files named makefile and Makefile in the same directory then makefile is executed if make alone is given. You can even pass arguments to makefile.

Check out more about makefile at this Tutorial : Basic understanding of Makefile

Getting Error "Form submission canceled because the form is not connected"

Adding for posterity since this isn't chrome related but this was the first thread that showed up on google when searching for this form submission error.

In our case we attached a function to replace the current div html with a "loading" animation on submission - since it occurred before the form was submitted there was no longer any form or data to submit.

Very obvious error in retrospect but in case anyone ends up here it might save them some time in the future.

Removing border from table cells

You might want to try this: http://jsfiddle.net/QPKVX/

How to print all session variables currently set?

session_start();

How is length implemented in Java Arrays?

According to the Java Language Specification (specifically §10.7 Array Members) it is a field:

  • The public final field length, which contains the number of components of the array (length may be positive or zero).

Internally the value is probably stored somewhere in the object header, but that is an implementation detail and depends on the concrete JVM implementation.

The HotSpot VM (the one in the popular Oracle (formerly Sun) JRE/JDK) stores the size in the object-header:

[...] arrays have a third header field, for the array size.

Spring RestTemplate timeout

Here is a really simple way to set the timeout:

RestTemplate restTemplate = new RestTemplate(getClientHttpRequestFactory());

private ClientHttpRequestFactory getClientHttpRequestFactory() {
    int timeout = 5000;
    HttpComponentsClientHttpRequestFactory clientHttpRequestFactory =
      new HttpComponentsClientHttpRequestFactory();
    clientHttpRequestFactory.setConnectTimeout(timeout);
    return clientHttpRequestFactory;
}

Is there a command for formatting HTML in the Atom editor?

Atom does not have a built-in command for formatting html. However, you can install the atom-beautify package to get this behavior.

  1. Press CTRL + SHFT + P to bring up the command palette (CMD + SHFT + P on a Mac).
  2. Type Install Packages to bring up the package manager.
  3. Type beautify into the search box.
  4. Choose atom-beautify or one of the other packages and click Install.
  5. Now you can use the default keybinding for atom-beautify CTRL + ALT + B to beautify your HTML (CTRL + OPTION + B on a Mac).

BeautifulSoup getText from between <p>, not picking up subsequent paragraphs

This works well for specific articles where the text is all wrapped in <p> tags. Since the web is an ugly place, it's not always the case.

Often, websites will have text scattered all over, wrapped in different types of tags (e.g. maybe in a <span> or a <div>, or an <li>).

To find all text nodes in the DOM, you can use soup.find_all(text=True).

This is going to return some undesired text, like the contents of <script> and <style> tags. You'll need to filter out the text contents of elements you don't want.

blacklist = [
  'style',
  'script',
  # other elements,
]

text_elements = [t for t in soup.find_all(text=True) if t.parent.name not in blacklist]

If you are working with a known set of tags, you can tag the opposite approach:

whitelist = [
  'p'
]

text_elements = [t for t in soup.find_all(text=True) if t.parent.name in whitelist]

Get Unix timestamp with C++

I created a global define with more information:

#include <iostream>
#include <ctime>
#include <iomanip>

#define __FILENAME__ (__builtin_strrchr(__FILE__, '/') ? __builtin_strrchr(__FILE__, '/') + 1 : __FILE__)    // only show filename and not it's path (less clutter)
#define INFO std::cout << std::put_time(std::localtime(&time_now), "%y-%m-%d %OH:%OM:%OS") << " [INFO] " << __FILENAME__ << "(" << __FUNCTION__ << ":" << __LINE__ << ") >> "
#define ERROR std::cout << std::put_time(std::localtime(&time_now), "%y-%m-%d %OH:%OM:%OS") << " [ERROR] " << __FILENAME__ << "(" << __FUNCTION__ << ":" << __LINE__ << ") >> "

static std::time_t time_now = std::time(nullptr);

Use it like this:

INFO << "Hello world" << std::endl;
ERROR << "Goodbye world" << std::endl;

Sample output:

16-06-23 21:33:19 [INFO] main.cpp(main:6) >> Hello world
16-06-23 21:33:19 [ERROR] main.cpp(main:7) >> Goodbye world

Put these lines in your header file. I find this very useful for debugging, etc.

Copy existing project with a new name in Android Studio

I had problems with this following:

https://google-developer-training.github.io/android-developer-fundamentals-course-concepts-v2/appendix/appendix-utilities/appendix-utilities.html

on Android Studio version: 3.3.2

until I killed the .idea/workspace.xml file.

$ cp -rv Testcopysource/ TestCopyDest
$ rm TestCopyDest/.idea/workspace.xml
$ stdio.sh & # Run Android Studio on Linux

Prior to doing that Android Studio would still point to the original source folder and all renames were applied to the original source files (within Testcopysource in my example above).

Create a custom event in Java

You probably want to look into the observer pattern.

Here's some sample code to get yourself started:

import java.util.*;

// An interface to be implemented by everyone interested in "Hello" events
interface HelloListener {
    void someoneSaidHello();
}

// Someone who says "Hello"
class Initiater {
    private List<HelloListener> listeners = new ArrayList<HelloListener>();

    public void addListener(HelloListener toAdd) {
        listeners.add(toAdd);
    }

    public void sayHello() {
        System.out.println("Hello!!");

        // Notify everybody that may be interested.
        for (HelloListener hl : listeners)
            hl.someoneSaidHello();
    }
}

// Someone interested in "Hello" events
class Responder implements HelloListener {
    @Override
    public void someoneSaidHello() {
        System.out.println("Hello there...");
    }
}

class Test {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        Initiater initiater = new Initiater();
        Responder responder = new Responder();

        initiater.addListener(responder);

        initiater.sayHello(); // Prints "Hello!!!" and "Hello there..."
    }
}

How to remove close button on the jQuery UI dialog?

Here is another option just using CSS that does not over ride every dialog on the page.

The CSS

.no-close .ui-dialog-titlebar-close {display: none }

The HTML

<div class="selector" title="No close button">
    This is a test without a close button
</div>

The Javascript.

$( ".selector" ).dialog({ dialogClass: 'no-close' });

Working Example

Sharepoint: How do I filter a document library view to show the contents of a subfolder?

Try this, pick or create one column and make that value required so that it's always populated such as title. A field that doesn't hold the name of the folder. Then in your filter put the filter you wanted that will select only the files you want. Then add an or to your filter, select your "required" field then set it equal to and leave the filter blank. Since all folders will have a blank in this required field your folders will show up with your files.

How to jump back to NERDTree from file in tab?

NERDTree opens up in another window. That split view you're seeing? They're called windows in vim parlance. All the window commands start with CTRL-W. To move from adjacent windows that are left and right of one another, you can change focus to the window to the left of your current window with CTRL-w h, and move focus to the right with CTRL-w l. Likewise, CTRL-w j and CTRL-w k will move you between horizontally split windows (i.e., one window is above the other). There's a lot more you can do with windows as described here.

You can also use the :NERDTreeToggle command to make your tree open and close. I usually bind that do t.

How do you query for "is not null" in Mongo?

In pymongo you can use:

db.mycollection.find({"IMAGE URL":{"$ne":None}});

Because pymongo represents mongo "null" as python "None".

What does the "yield" keyword do?

All of the answers here are great; but only one of them (the most voted one) relates to how your code works. Others are relating to generators in general, and how they work.

So I won't repeat what generators are or what yields do; I think these are covered by great existing answers. However, after spending few hours trying to understand a similar code to yours, I'll break it down how it works.

Your code traverse a binary tree structure. Let's take this tree for example:

    5
   / \
  3   6
 / \   \
1   4   8

And another simpler implementation of a binary-search tree traversal:

class Node(object):
..
def __iter__(self):
    if self.has_left_child():
        for child in self.left:
            yield child

    yield self.val

    if self.has_right_child():
        for child in self.right:
            yield child

The execution code is on the Tree object, which implements __iter__ as this:

def __iter__(self):

    class EmptyIter():
        def next(self):
            raise StopIteration

    if self.root:
        return self.root.__iter__()
    return EmptyIter()

The while candidates statement can be replaced with for element in tree; Python translate this to

it = iter(TreeObj)  # returns iter(self.root) which calls self.root.__iter__()
for element in it:
    .. process element ..

Because Node.__iter__ function is a generator, the code inside it is executed per iteration. So the execution would look like this:

  1. root element is first; check if it has left childs and for iterate them (let's call it it1 because its the first iterator object)
  2. it has a child so the for is executed. The for child in self.left creates a new iterator from self.left, which is a Node object itself (it2)
  3. Same logic as 2, and a new iterator is created (it3)
  4. Now we reached the left end of the tree. it3 has no left childs so it continues and yield self.value
  5. On the next call to next(it3) it raises StopIteration and exists since it has no right childs (it reaches to the end of the function without yield anything)
  6. it1 and it2 are still active - they are not exhausted and calling next(it2) would yield values, not raise StopIteration
  7. Now we are back to it2 context, and call next(it2) which continues where it stopped: right after the yield child statement. Since it has no more left childs it continues and yields it's self.val.

The catch here is that every iteration creates sub-iterators to traverse the tree, and holds the state of the current iterator. Once it reaches the end it traverse back the stack, and values are returned in the correct order (smallest yields value first).

Your code example did something similar in a different technique: it populated a one-element list for every child, then on the next iteration it pops it and run the function code on the current object (hence the self).

I hope this contributed a little to this legendary topic. I spent several good hours drawing this process to understand it.

How to generate random colors in matplotlib?

I'm calling scatter inside a loop and want each plot in a different color.

Based on that, and on your answer: It seems to me that you actually want n distinct colors for your datasets; you want to map the integer indices 0, 1, ..., n-1 to distinct RGB colors. Something like:

mapping index to color

Here is the function to do it:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

def get_cmap(n, name='hsv'):
    '''Returns a function that maps each index in 0, 1, ..., n-1 to a distinct
    RGB color; the keyword argument name must be a standard mpl colormap name.'''
    return plt.cm.get_cmap(name, n)

Usage in your pseudo-code snippet in the question:

cmap = get_cmap(len(data))
for i, (X, Y) in enumerate(data):
   scatter(X, Y, c=cmap(i))

I generated the figure in my answer with the following code:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

def get_cmap(n, name='hsv'):
    '''Returns a function that maps each index in 0, 1, ..., n-1 to a distinct
    RGB color; the keyword argument name must be a standard mpl colormap name.'''
    return plt.cm.get_cmap(name, n)

def main():
    N = 30
    fig=plt.figure()
    ax=fig.add_subplot(111)
    plt.axis('scaled')
    ax.set_xlim([ 0, N])
    ax.set_ylim([-0.5, 0.5])
    cmap = get_cmap(N)
    for i in range(N):
        rect = plt.Rectangle((i, -0.5), 1, 1, facecolor=cmap(i))
        ax.add_artist(rect)
    ax.set_yticks([])
    plt.show()

if __name__=='__main__':
    main()

Tested with both Python 2.7 & matplotlib 1.5, and with Python 3.5 & matplotlib 2.0. It works as expected.

A CLASSPATH entry is either a directory at the head of a package hierarchy of .class files, or a .jar file. If you're expecting ./lib to include all the .jar files in that directory, it won't. You have to name them explicitly.

pandas read_csv index_col=None not working with delimiters at the end of each line

Re: craigts's response, for anyone having trouble with using either False or None parameters for index_col, such as in cases where you're trying to get rid of a range index, you can instead use an integer to specify the column you want to use as the index. For example:

df = pd.read_csv('file.csv', index_col=0)

The above will set the first column as the index (and not add a range index in my "common case").

Update

Given the popularity of this answer, I thought i'd add some context/ a demo:

# Setting up the dummy data
In [1]: df = pd.DataFrame({"A":[1, 2, 3], "B":[4, 5, 6]})

In [2]: df
Out[2]:
   A  B
0  1  4
1  2  5
2  3  6

In [3]: df.to_csv('file.csv', index=None)
File[3]:
A  B
1  4
2  5
3  6

Reading without index_col or with None/False will all result in a range index:

In [4]: pd.read_csv('file.csv')
Out[4]:
   A  B
0  1  4
1  2  5
2  3  6

# Note that this is the default behavior, so the same as In [4]
In [5]: pd.read_csv('file.csv', index_col=None)
Out[5]:
   A  B
0  1  4
1  2  5
2  3  6

In [6]: pd.read_csv('file.csv', index_col=False)
Out[6]:
   A  B
0  1  4
1  2  5
2  3  6

However, if we specify that "A" (the 0th column) is actually the index, we can avoid the range index:

In [7]: pd.read_csv('file.csv', index_col=0)
Out[7]:
   B
A
1  4
2  5
3  6

How do I use StringUtils in Java?

StringUtils is part of Apache Commons Lang (http://commons.apache.org/lang/, and as the name suggest it provides some nice utilities for dealing with Strings, going beyond what is offered in java.lang.String. It consists of over 50 static methods.

There are two different versions available, the newer org.apache.commons.lang3.StringUtils and the older org.apache.commons.lang.StringUtils. There are not really any significant differences between the two. lang3.StringUtils requires Java 5.0 and is probably the version you'll want to use.

Directory.GetFiles: how to get only filename, not full path?

You can use System.IO.Path.GetFileName to do this.

E.g.,

string[] files = Directory.GetFiles(dir);
foreach(string file in files)
    Console.WriteLine(Path.GetFileName(file));

While you could use FileInfo, it is much more heavyweight than the approach you are already using (just retrieving file paths). So I would suggest you stick with GetFiles unless you need the additional functionality of the FileInfo class.

How can I delete multiple lines in vi?

If you prefer a non-visual mode method and acknowledge the line numbers, I would like to suggest you an another straightforward way.

Example

I want to delete text from line 45 to line 101.

My method suggests you to type a below command in command-mode:

45Gd101G

It reads:

Go to line 45 (45G) then delete text (d) from the current line to the line 101 (101G).

Note that on vim you might use gg in stead of G.

Compare to the @Bonnie Varghese's answer which is:

:45,101d[enter]

The command above from his answer requires 9 times typing including enter, where my answer require 8 - 10 times typing. Thus, a speed of my method is comparable.

Personally, I myself prefer 45Gd101G over :45,101d because I like to stick to the syntax of the vi's command, in this case is:

+---------+----------+--------------------+
| syntax  | <motion> | <operator><motion> |
+---------+----------+--------------------+
| command |   45G    |        d101G       |
+---------+----------+--------------------+

sqlalchemy IS NOT NULL select

column_obj != None will produce a IS NOT NULL constraint:

In a column context, produces the clause a != b. If the target is None, produces a IS NOT NULL.

or use isnot() (new in 0.7.9):

Implement the IS NOT operator.

Normally, IS NOT is generated automatically when comparing to a value of None, which resolves to NULL. However, explicit usage of IS NOT may be desirable if comparing to boolean values on certain platforms.

Demo:

>>> from sqlalchemy.sql import column
>>> column('YourColumn') != None
<sqlalchemy.sql.elements.BinaryExpression object at 0x10c8d8b90>
>>> str(column('YourColumn') != None)
'"YourColumn" IS NOT NULL'
>>> column('YourColumn').isnot(None)
<sqlalchemy.sql.elements.BinaryExpression object at 0x104603850>
>>> str(column('YourColumn').isnot(None))
'"YourColumn" IS NOT NULL'

Server.UrlEncode vs. HttpUtility.UrlEncode

I had significant headaches with these methods before, I recommend you avoid any variant of UrlEncode, and instead use Uri.EscapeDataString - at least that one has a comprehensible behavior.

Let's see...

HttpUtility.UrlEncode(" ") == "+" //breaks ASP.NET when used in paths, non-
                                  //standard, undocumented.
Uri.EscapeUriString("a?b=e") == "a?b=e" // makes sense, but rarely what you
                                        // want, since you still need to
                                        // escape special characters yourself

But my personal favorite has got to be HttpUtility.UrlPathEncode - this thing is really incomprehensible. It encodes:

  • " " ==> "%20"
  • "100% true" ==> "100%%20true" (ok, your url is broken now)
  • "test A.aspx#anchor B" ==> "test%20A.aspx#anchor%20B"
  • "test A.aspx?hmm#anchor B" ==> "test%20A.aspx?hmm#anchor B" (note the difference with the previous escape sequence!)

It also has the lovelily specific MSDN documentation "Encodes the path portion of a URL string for reliable HTTP transmission from the Web server to a client." - without actually explaining what it does. You are less likely to shoot yourself in the foot with an Uzi...

In short, stick to Uri.EscapeDataString.

In my case the problem was that I had added "default-character-set=utf8" to my.cnf and that was corrupting the file. Instead change that line for "character_set_server=utf8". That should solve it, hope this helps.

PHP Fatal error: Class 'PDO' not found

Ensure they are being called in the php.ini file

If the PDO is displayed in the list of currently installed php modules, you will want to check the php.ini file in the relevant folder to ensure they are being called. Somewhere in the php.ini file you should see the following:

extension=pdo.so
extension=pdo_sqlite.so
extension=pdo_mysql.so
extension=sqlite.so

If they are not present, simply add the lines above to the bottom of the php.ini file and save it.

What is the best way to conditionally apply a class?

I faced a similar problem recently and decided to just create a conditional filter:

  angular.module('myFilters', []).
    /**
     * "if" filter
     * Simple filter useful for conditionally applying CSS classes and decouple
     * view from controller
     */
    filter('if', function() {
      return function(input, value) {
        if (typeof(input) === 'string') {
          input = [input, ''];
        }
        return value? input[0] : input[1];
      };
    });

It takes a single argument, which is either a 2-element array or a string, which gets turned into an array that is appended an empty string as the second element:

<li ng-repeat="item in products | filter:search | orderBy:orderProp |
  page:pageNum:pageLength" ng-class="'opened'|if:isOpen(item)">
  ...
</li>

Selecting non-blank cells in Excel with VBA

If you are looking for the last row of a column, use:

Sub SelectFirstColumn()
   SelectEntireColumn (1)
End Sub

Sub SelectSecondColumn()
    SelectEntireColumn (2)
End Sub

Sub SelectEntireColumn(columnNumber)
    Dim LastRow
    Sheets("sheet1").Select
    LastRow = ActiveSheet.Columns(columnNumber).SpecialCells(xlLastCell).Row

    ActiveSheet.Range(Cells(1, columnNumber), Cells(LastRow, columnNumber)).Select
End Sub

Other commands you will need to get familiar with are copy and paste commands:

Sub CopyOneToTwo()
    SelectEntireColumn (1)
    Selection.Copy

    Sheets("sheet1").Select
    ActiveSheet.Range("B1").PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues
End Sub

Finally, you can reference worksheets in other workbooks by using the following syntax:

Dim book2
Set book2 = Workbooks.Open("C:\book2.xls")
book2.Worksheets("sheet1")

Convert JSONArray to String Array

You might want to take a look at JSONArray.toList(), which returns a List containing Maps and Lists, which represent your JSON structure. So you can use it with Java Streams like this:

JSONArray array = new JSONArray(jsonString);
List<String> result = array.toList().stream()
        .filter(Map.class::isInstance)
        .map(Map.class::cast)
        .map(o -> o.get("name"))
        .filter(String.class::isInstance)
        .map(String.class::cast)
        .collect(Collectors.toList());

This might just be useful even for more complex objects.

Alternatively you can just use an IntStream to iterate over all items in the JSONArray and map all names:

JSONArray array = new JSONArray(jsonString);
List<String> result = IntStream.range(0, array.length())
        .mapToObj(array::getJSONObject)
        .map(o -> o.getString("name"))
        .collect(Collectors.toList());

.NET Excel Library that can read/write .xls files

I'd recommend NPOI. NPOI is FREE and works exclusively with .XLS files. It has helped me a lot.

Detail: you don't need to have Microsoft Office installed on your machine to work with .XLS files if you use NPOI.

What does "commercial use" exactly mean?

If the usage of something is part of the process of you making money, then it's generally considered a commercial use. If the purpose of the site is to, through some means or another, directly or indirectly, make you money, then it's probably commercial use.

If, on the other hand, something is merely incidental (not part of the process of production/working, but instead simply tacked on to the side), there are potential grounds for it not to be considered commercial use.

Pointer vs. Reference

You should pass a pointer if you are going to modify the value of the variable. Even though technically passing a reference or a pointer are the same, passing a pointer in your use case is more readable as it "advertises" the fact that the value will be changed by the function.

What’s the best way to check if a file exists in C++? (cross platform)

I am a happy boost user and would certainly use Andreas' solution. But if you didn't have access to the boost libs you can use the stream library:

ifstream file(argv[1]);
if (!file)
{
    // Can't open file
}

It's not quite as nice as boost::filesystem::exists since the file will actually be opened...but then that's usually the next thing you want to do anyway.

How do I print the content of httprequest request?

You can print the request type using:

request.getMethod();

You can print all the headers as mentioned here:

Enumeration<String> headerNames = request.getHeaderNames();
while(headerNames.hasMoreElements()) {
  String headerName = headerNames.nextElement();
  System.out.println("Header Name - " + headerName + ", Value - " + request.getHeader(headerName));
}

To print all the request params, use this:

Enumeration<String> params = request.getParameterNames();
while(params.hasMoreElements()){
 String paramName = params.nextElement();
 System.out.println("Parameter Name - "+paramName+", Value - "+request.getParameter(paramName));
}

request is the instance of HttpServletRequest

You can beautify the outputs as you desire.

Can I automatically increment the file build version when using Visual Studio?

I have created an application to increment the file version automatically.

  1. Download Application
  2. add the following line to pre-build event command line

    C:\temp\IncrementFileVersion.exe $(SolutionDir)\Properties\AssemblyInfo.cs

  3. Build the project

To keep it simple the app only throws messages if there is an error, to confirm it worked fine you will need to check the file version in 'Assembly Information'

Note : You will have to reload the solution in Visual studio for 'Assembly Information' button to populate the fields, however your output file will have the updated version.

For suggestions and requests please email me at [email protected]

How much faster is C++ than C#?

I would put it this way: programmers who write faster code, are the ones who are the more informed of what makes current machines go fast, and incidentally they are also the ones who use an appropriate tool that allows for precise low-level and deterministic optimisation techniques. For these reasons, these people are the ones who use C/C++ rather than C#. I would go as far as stating this as a fact.

UnhandledPromiseRejectionWarning: This error originated either by throwing inside of an async function without a catch block

I suggest removing the below code from getMails

 .catch(error => { throw error})

In your main function you should put await and related code in Try block and also add one catch block where you failure code.

you function gmaiLHelper.getEmails should return a promise which has reject and resolve in it.

Now while calling and using await put that in try catch block(remove the .catch) as below.

router.get("/emailfetch", authCheck, async (req, res) => {
  //listing messages in users mailbox
try{
  let emailFetch = await gmaiLHelper.getEmails(req.user._doc.profile_id , '/messages', req.user.accessToken)
}
catch (error) {
 // your catch block code goes here
})

Check if string contains only whitespace

I used following:

if str and not str.isspace():
  print('not null and not empty nor whitespace')
else:
  print('null or empty or whitespace')

Fastest way to iterate over all the chars in a String

String.toCharArray() creates new char array, means allocation of memory of string length, then copies original char array of string using System.arraycopy() and then returns this copy to caller. String.charAt() returns character at position i from original copy, that's why String.charAt() will be faster than String.toCharArray(). Although, String.toCharArray() returns copy and not char from original String array, where String.charAt() returns character from original char array. Code below returns value at the specified index of this string.

public char charAt(int index) {
    if ((index < 0) || (index >= value.length)) {
        throw new StringIndexOutOfBoundsException(index);
    }
    return value[index];
}

code below returns a newly allocated character array whose length is the length of this string

public char[] toCharArray() {
    // Cannot use Arrays.copyOf because of class initialization order issues
    char result[] = new char[value.length];
    System.arraycopy(value, 0, result, 0, value.length);
    return result;
}

For a boolean field, what is the naming convention for its getter/setter?

Setter: public void setCurrent(boolean val)
Getter: public boolean getCurrent()

For booleans you can also use

Daemon Threads Explanation

Some threads do background tasks, like sending keepalive packets, or performing periodic garbage collection, or whatever. These are only useful when the main program is running, and it's okay to kill them off once the other, non-daemon, threads have exited.

Without daemon threads, you'd have to keep track of them, and tell them to exit, before your program can completely quit. By setting them as daemon threads, you can let them run and forget about them, and when your program quits, any daemon threads are killed automatically.

Python re.sub replace with matched content

A backreference to the whole match value is \g<0>, see re.sub documentation:

The backreference \g<0> substitutes in the entire substring matched by the RE.

See the Python demo:

print(re.sub(r':[a-z]+', r'<span>\g<0></span>', method))
# => images/<span>:id</span>/huge

How to save an HTML5 Canvas as an image on a server?

I played with this two weeks ago, it's very simple. The only problem is that all the tutorials just talk about saving the image locally. This is how I did it:

1) I set up a form so I can use a POST method.

2) When the user is done drawing, he can click the "Save" button.

3) When the button is clicked I take the image data and put it into a hidden field. After that I submit the form.

document.getElementById('my_hidden').value = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
document.forms["form1"].submit();

4) When the form is submited I have this small php script:

<?php
$upload_dir = somehow_get_upload_dir();  //implement this function yourself
$img = $_POST['my_hidden'];
$img = str_replace('data:image/png;base64,', '', $img);
$img = str_replace(' ', '+', $img);
$data = base64_decode($img);
$file = $upload_dir."image_name.png";
$success = file_put_contents($file, $data);
header('Location: '.$_POST['return_url']);
?>

Save a file in json format using Notepad++

You can do using a simple notepad and save as FILENAME.json

That's all.

echo notfound
...

does this without any need for if.

How to order citations by appearance using BibTeX?

The datatool package offers a nice way to sort bibliography by an arbitrary criterion, by converting it first into some database format.

Short example, taken from here and posted for the record:

\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{databib}

\begin{document}
% First argument is the name of new datatool database
% Second argument is list of .bib files
\DTLloadbbl{mybibdata}{acmtr}
% Sort database in order of year starting from most recent
\DTLsort{Year=descending}{mybibdata}
% Add citations
\nocite{*}

% Display bibliography
\DTLbibliography{mybibdata}
\end{document}

Php artisan make:auth command is not defined

In Laravel 6.0 make:auth no longer exists. Read more here

A- Shorthand:

Update Nov 18th: Taylor just released Laravel Installer 2.3.0 added a new "--auth" flag to create a new project with the authentication scaffolding installed!

To update laravel installer read here

It means we can do:

laravel new project --auth

cd project

php artisan migrate

npm install
npm run dev

Which is a shorthand of commands in the Section B. Also read more here

B - Details:

Follow these three steps

Step 1 - First do this:

laravel new project

cd project

composer require laravel/ui --dev

Note: Laravel UI Composer package is a new first-party package that extracts the UI portion of a Laravel project ( frontend scaffolding typically provided with previous releases of Laravel ) into a separate laravel/ui package. The separate package enables the Laravel team to update, develop and version UI scaffolding package separately from the primary framework and the main Laravel codebase.

Step 2 - Then do this:

php artisan ui bootstrap --auth
php artisan migrate

or

php artisan ui vue --auth
php artisan migrate

instead of

php artisan make:auth ( which works for Laravel 5.8 and older versions )

More Options here

php artisan ui:auth

The above command will generate only the auth routes, a HomeController, auth views, and a app.blade.php layout file.

You can also generate the views only with:

php artisan ui:auth --views

The console command will prompt you to confirm overwriting auth files if you've already run the command before.

// Generate basic scaffolding...
php artisan ui vue
php artisan ui react

and also:

// Generate login / registration scaffolding...
php artisan ui vue --auth
php artisan ui react --auth

To see differences read this article

Step 3 - Then you need to do:

npm install
npm run dev

MongoDB distinct aggregation

Distinct and the aggregation framework are not inter-operable.

Instead you just want:

db.zips.aggregate([
    {$group:{_id:{city:'$city', state:'$state'}, numberOfzipcodes:{$sum:1}}},
    {$sort:{numberOfzipcodes:-1}},
    {$group:{_id:'$_id.state', city:{$first:'$_id.city'},
              numberOfzipcode:{$first:'$numberOfzipcodes'}}}
]);

What is the use of the square brackets [] in sql statements?

Column names can contain characters and reserved words that will confuse the query execution engine, so placing brackets around them at all times prevents this from happening. Easier than checking for an issue and then dealing with it, I guess.

Default argument values in JavaScript functions

You cannot add default values for function parameters. But you can do this:

 if (typeof paramA == "undefined"){
   paramA = defaultValue;
 }
 if (typeof paramB == "undefined"){
   paramB = defaultValue;
 }
}

iOS 8 Snapshotting a view that has not been rendered results in an empty snapshot

In my case ( XCode 7 and iOS 9 ), I use UINavigationController "hidden", so Ihave to add UINavigationControllerDelegate to present camera or roll and it work like it is supposed to! And pickerControllerDelegate.self doesn't display error either!

HorizontalScrollView within ScrollView Touch Handling

I've found out that somethimes one ScrollView regains focus and the other loses focus. You can prevent that, by only granting one of the scrollView focus:

    scrollView1= (ScrollView) findViewById(R.id.scrollscroll);
    scrollView1.setAdapter(adapter);
    scrollView1.setOnTouchListener(new View.OnTouchListener() {

        @Override
        public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event) {
            scrollView1.getParent().requestDisallowInterceptTouchEvent(true);
            return false;
        }
    });

Hive query output to file

This will put the results in tab delimited file(s) under a directory:

INSERT OVERWRITE LOCAL DIRECTORY '/home/hadoop/YourTableDir'
ROW FORMAT DELIMITED
FIELDS TERMINATED BY '\t'
STORED AS TEXTFILE
SELECT * FROM table WHERE id > 100;

Why do we usually use || over |? What is the difference?

|| is a logical or and | is a bit-wise or.

Will iOS launch my app into the background if it was force-quit by the user?

UPDATE2:

You can achieve this using the new PushKit framework, introduced in iOS 8. Though PushKit is used for VoIP. So your usage should be for VoIP related otherwise there is risk of app rejection. (See this answer).

UDPDATE1:

The documentation has been clarified for iOS8. The documentation can be read here. Here is a relevant excerpt:

Use this method to process incoming remote notifications for your app. Unlike the application:didReceiveRemoteNotification: method, which is called only when your app is running in the foreground, the system calls this method when your app is running in the foreground or background. In addition, if you enabled the remote notifications background mode, the system launches your app (or wakes it from the suspended state) and puts it in the background state when a push notification arrives. However, the system does not automatically launch your app if the user has force-quit it. In that situation, the user must relaunch your app or restart the device before the system attempts to launch your app automatically again.

Although this was not made clear by the WWDC video, a quick search on the developer forums turned this up:

https://devforums.apple.com/message/873265#873265 (login required)

Also keep in mind that if you kill your app from the app switcher (i.e. swiping up to kill the app) then the OS will never relaunch the app regardless of push notification or background fetch. In this case the user has to manually relaunch the app once and then from that point forward the background activities will be invoked. -pmarcos

That post was by an Apple employee so I think i can trust that this information is correct.

So it looks like when the app is killed from the app switcher (by swiping up), the app will never be launched, even for scheduled background fetches.

How to print to console when using Qt

Writing to stdout

If you want something that, like std::cout, writes to your application's standard output, you can simply do the following (credit to CapelliC):

QTextStream(stdout) << "string to print" << endl;

If you want to avoid creating a temporary QTextStream object, follow Yakk's suggestion in the comments below of creating a function to return a static handle for stdout:

inline QTextStream& qStdout()
{
    static QTextStream r{stdout};
    return r;
}

...

foreach(QString x, strings)
    qStdout() << x << endl;

Remember to flush the stream periodically to ensure the output is actually printed.

Writing to stderr

Note that the above technique can also be used for other outputs. However, there are more readable ways to write to stderr (credit to Goz and the comments below his answer):

qDebug() << "Debug Message"; // CAN BE REMOVED AT COMPILE TIME!
qWarning() << "Warning Message";
qCritical() << "Critical Error Message";
qFatal("Fatal Error Message"); // WILL KILL THE PROGRAM!

qDebug() is closed if QT_NO_DEBUG_OUTPUT is turned on at compile-time.

(Goz notes in a comment that for non-console apps, these can print to a different stream than stderr.)

NOTE: All of the Qt print methods assume that const char* arguments are ISO-8859-1 encoded strings with terminating \0 characters.

Java int to String - Integer.toString(i) vs new Integer(i).toString()

Simple way is just concatenate "" with integer:

int i = 100;

String s = "" + i;

now s will have 100 as string value.

Set a:hover based on class

Try this:

.menu a.main-nav-item:hover { }

In order to understand how this works it is important to read this the way the browser does. The a defines the element, the .main-nav-item qualifies the element to only those which have that class, and finally the psuedo-class :hover is applied to the qualified expression that comes before.

Basically it boils down to this:

Apply this hover rule to all anchor elements with the class main-nav-item that are a descendant child of any element with the class menu.

What is "X-Content-Type-Options=nosniff"?

# prevent mime based attacks
Header set X-Content-Type-Options "nosniff"

This header prevents "mime" based attacks. This header prevents Internet Explorer from MIME-sniffing a response away from the declared content-type as the header instructs the browser not to override the response content type. With the nosniff option, if the server says the content is text/html, the browser will render it as text/html.

Default string initialization: NULL or Empty?

It depends.

Do you need to be able to tell if the value is missing (is it possible for it to not be defined)?

Is the empty string a valid value for the usage of that string?

If you answered "yes" to both, then you'll want to use null. Otherwise you can't tell the difference between "no value" and "empty string".

If you don't need to know if there's no value then the empty string is probably safer, as it allows you to skip null checks wherever you use it.

How do I create a branch?

Branching in Subversion is facilitated by a very very light and efficient copying facility.

Branching and tagging are effectively the same. Just copy a whole folder in the repository to somewhere else in the repository using the svn copy command.

Basically this means that it is by convention what copying a folder means - whether it be a backup, tag, branch or whatever. Depending upon how you want to think about things (normally depending upon which SCM tool you have used in the past) you need to set up a folder structure within your repository to support your style.

Common styles are to have a bunch of folders at the top of your repository called tags, branches, trunk, etc. - that allows you to copy your whole trunk (or sub-sets) into the tags and/or branches folders. If you have more than one project you might want to replicate this kind of structure under each project:

It can take a while to get used to the concept - but it works - just make sure you (and your team) are clear on the conventions that you are going to use. It is also a good idea to have a good naming convention - something that tells you why the branch/tag was made and whether it is still appropriate - consider ways of archiving branches that are obsolete.

How can I copy a Python string?

Is there a version of JavaScript's String.indexOf() that allows for regular expressions?

I needed a regexIndexOf function also for an array, so I programed one myself. However I doubt, that it's optimized, but i guess it should work properly.

Array.prototype.regexIndexOf = function (regex, startpos = 0) {
    len = this.length;
    for(x = startpos; x < len; x++){
        if(typeof this[x] != 'undefined' && (''+this[x]).match(regex)){
            return x;
        }
    }
    return -1;
}

arr = [];
arr.push(null);
arr.push(NaN);
arr[3] = 7;
arr.push('asdf');
arr.push('qwer');
arr.push(9);
arr.push('...');
console.log(arr);
arr.regexIndexOf(/\d/, 4);

Subquery returned more than 1 value.This is not permitted when the subquery follows =,!=,<,<=,>,>= or when the subquery is used as an expression

You can use IN operator as below

select * from dbo.books where isbn IN
(select isbn from dbo.lending where lended_date between @fdate and @tdate)

Javascript array value is undefined ... how do I test for that

predQuery[preId]=='undefined'

You're testing against the string 'undefined'; you've confused this test with the typeof test which would return a string. You probably mean to be testing against the special value undefined:

predQuery[preId]===undefined

Note the strict-equality operator to avoid the generally-unwanted match null==undefined.

However there are two ways you can get an undefined value: either preId isn't a member of predQuery, or it is a member but has a value set to the special undefined value. Often, you only want to check whether it's present or not; in that case the in operator is more appropriate:

!(preId in predQuery)

How to clone object in C++ ? Or Is there another solution?

If your object is not polymorphic (and a stack implementation likely isn't), then as per other answers here, what you want is the copy constructor. Please note that there are differences between copy construction and assignment in C++; if you want both behaviors (and the default versions don't fit your needs), you'll have to implement both functions.

If your object is polymorphic, then slicing can be an issue and you might need to jump through some extra hoops to do proper copying. Sometimes people use as virtual method called clone() as a helper for polymorphic copying.

Finally, note that getting copying and assignment right, if you need to replace the default versions, is actually quite difficult. It is usually better to set up your objects (via RAII) in such a way that the default versions of copy/assign do what you want them to do. I highly recommend you look at Meyer's Effective C++, especially at items 10,11,12.

Error when trying to access XAMPP from a network

This answer is for XAMPP on Ubuntu.

The manual for installation and download is on (site official)

http://www.apachefriends.org/it/xampp-linux.html

After to start XAMPP simply call this command:

sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start

You should now see something like this on your screen:

Starting XAMPP 1.8.1...
LAMPP: Starting Apache...
LAMPP: Starting MySQL...
LAMPP started.

If you have this

Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.8.1...

. The solution is

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop

And the restast with sudo //opt/lampp/lampp restart

You to fix most of the security weaknesses simply call the following command:

/opt/lampp/lampp security

After the change this file

sudo kate //opt/lampp/etc/extra/httpd-xampp.conf

How to set column widths to a jQuery datatable?

Try setting the width on the table itself:

<table id="ratesandcharges1" class="grid" style="width: 650px;">

You'll have to adjust the 650 by a couple pixels to account for whatever padding, margins, and borders you have.

You'll probably still have some issues though. I don't see enough horizontal space for all those columns without mangling the headers, reducing the font sizes, or some other bit of ugliness.

No module named serial

  1. Firstly uninstall pyserial using the command pip uninstall pyserial
  2. Then go to https://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/
  3. download the suitable pyserial version and then go to the directory where the file is downloaded and open cmd there
  4. then type pip install "filename"(without quotes)

Why cannot cast Integer to String in java?

Casting is different than converting in Java, to use informal terminology.

Casting an object means that object already is what you're casting it to, and you're just telling the compiler about it. For instance, if I have a Foo reference that I know is a FooSubclass instance, then (FooSubclass)Foo tells the compiler, "don't change the instance, just know that it's actually a FooSubclass.

On the other hand, an Integer is not a String, although (as you point out) there are methods for getting a String that represents an Integer. Since no no instance of Integer can ever be a String, you can't cast Integer to String.

How can I alias a default import in JavaScript?

defaultMember already is an alias - it doesn't need to be the name of the exported function/thing. Just do

import alias from 'my-module';

Alternatively you can do

import {default as alias} from 'my-module';

but that's rather esoteric.

Pass array to MySQL stored routine

I've come up with an awkward but functional solution for my problem. It works for a one-dimensional array (more dimensions would be tricky) and input that fits into a varchar:

  declare pos int; -- Keeping track of the next item's position
  declare item varchar(100); -- A single item of the input
  declare breaker int; -- Safeguard for while loop

  -- The string must end with the delimiter
  if right(inputString, 1) <> '|' then
     set inputString = concat(inputString, '|');
  end if;

  DROP TABLE IF EXISTS MyTemporaryTable;
  CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE MyTemporaryTable ( columnName varchar(100) );
  set breaker = 0;

  while (breaker < 2000) && (length(inputString) > 1) do
     -- Iterate looking for the delimiter, add rows to temporary table.
     set breaker = breaker + 1;
     set pos = INSTR(inputString, '|');
     set item = LEFT(inputString, pos - 1);
     set inputString = substring(inputString, pos + 1);
     insert into MyTemporaryTable values(item);
  end while;

For example, input for this code could be the string Apple|Banana|Orange. MyTemporaryTable will be populated with three rows containing the strings Apple, Banana, and Orange respectively.

I thought the slow speed of string handling would render this approach useless, but it was quick enough (only a fraction of a second for a 1,000 entries array).

Hope this helps somebody.

How to install pip in CentOS 7?

Update 2019

I tried easy_install at first but it doesn't install packages in a clean and intuitive way. Also when it comes time to remove packages it left a lot of artifacts that needed to be cleaned up.

sudo yum install epel-release
sudo yum install python34-pip
pip install package

Was the solution that worked for me, it installs "pip3" as pip on the system. It also uses standard rpm structure so it clean in its removal. I am not sure what process you would need to take if you want both python2 and python3 package manager on your system.

What's the opposite of 'make install', i.e. how do you uninstall a library in Linux?

Make

Make is the program that’s used to install the program that’s compiled from the source code. It’s not the Linux package manager so it doesn’t keep track of the files it installs. This makes it difficult to uninstall the files afterward.

The Make Install command copies the built program and packages into the library directory and specified locations from the makefile. These locations can vary based on the examination that’s performed by the configure script.

CheckInstall

CheckInstall is the program that’s used to install or uninstall programs that are compiled from the source code. It monitors and copies the files that are installed using the make program. It also installs the files using the Linux package manager which allows it to be uninstalled like any regular package.

The CheckInstall command is used to call the Make Install command. It monitors the files that are installed and creates a binary package from them. It also installs the binary package with the Linux package manager.

Replace "source_location.deb" and "name" with your information from the Screenshot.

Execute the following commands in the source package directory:

  1. Install CheckInstall sudo apt-get install checkinstall
  2. Run the Configure script sudo ./configure
  3. Run the Make command sudo make
  4. Run CheckInstall sudo checkinstall
  5. Reinstall the package sudo dpkg --install --force-overwrite source_location.deb
  6. Remove the package sudo apt remove name

Here's an article article I wrote that covers the whole process with explanations.

paint() and repaint() in Java

Difference between Paint() and Repaint() method

Paint():

This method holds instructions to paint this component. Actually, in Swing, you should change paintComponent() instead of paint(), as paint calls paintBorder(), paintComponent() and paintChildren(). You shouldn't call this method directly, you should call repaint() instead.

Repaint():

This method can't be overridden. It controls the update() -> paint() cycle. You should call this method to get a component to repaint itself. If you have done anything to change the look of the component, but not its size ( like changing color, animating, etc. ) then call this method.

How to set a tkinter window to a constant size

There are 2 solutions for your problem:

  1. Either you set a fixed size of the Tkinter window; mw.geometry('500x500')

OR

  1. Make the Frame adjust to the size of the window automatically;back.place(x = 0, y = 0, relwidth = 1, relheight = 1)

*The second option should be used in place of back.pack()

Closing database connections in Java

When you are done with using your Connection, you need to explicitly close it by calling its close() method in order to release any other database resources (cursors, handles, etc.) the connection may be holding on to.

Actually, the safe pattern in Java is to close your ResultSet, Statement, and Connection (in that order) in a finally block when you are done with them. Something like this:

Connection conn = null;
PreparedStatement ps = null;
ResultSet rs = null;

try {
    // Do stuff
    ...

} catch (SQLException ex) {
    // Exception handling stuff
    ...
} finally {
    if (rs != null) {
        try {
            rs.close();
        } catch (SQLException e) { /* Ignored */}
    }
    if (ps != null) {
        try {
            ps.close();
        } catch (SQLException e) { /* Ignored */}
    }
    if (conn != null) {
        try {
            conn.close();
        } catch (SQLException e) { /* Ignored */}
    }
}

The finally block can be slightly improved into (to avoid the null check):

} finally {
    try { rs.close(); } catch (Exception e) { /* Ignored */ }
    try { ps.close(); } catch (Exception e) { /* Ignored */ }
    try { conn.close(); } catch (Exception e) { /* Ignored */ }
}

But, still, this is extremely verbose so you generally end up using an helper class to close the objects in null-safe helper methods and the finally block becomes something like this:

} finally {
    DbUtils.closeQuietly(rs);
    DbUtils.closeQuietly(ps);
    DbUtils.closeQuietly(conn);
}

And, actually, the Apache Commons DbUtils has a DbUtils class which is precisely doing that, so there isn't any need to write your own.

for row in l:
    rowLength = len(row)
    if rowLength > maxCol:
        maxCol = rowLength
lTrans = []
for colIndex in range(maxCol):
    lTrans.append([])
    for row in l:
        if colIndex < len(row):
            lTrans[colIndex].append(row[colIndex])

Keep-alive header clarification

Where is this info kept ("this connection is between computer A and server F")?

A TCP connection is recognized by source IP and port and destination IP and port. Your OS, all intermediate session-aware devices and the server's OS will recognize the connection by this.

HTTP works with request-response: client connects to server, performs a request and gets a response. Without keep-alive, the connection to an HTTP server is closed after each response. With HTTP keep-alive you keep the underlying TCP connection open until certain criteria are met.

This allows for multiple request-response pairs over a single TCP connection, eliminating some of TCP's relatively slow connection startup.

When The IIS (F) sends keep alive header (or user sends keep-alive) , does it mean that (E,C,B) save a connection

No. Routers don't need to remember sessions. In fact, multiple TCP packets belonging to same TCP session need not all go through same routers - that is for TCP to manage. Routers just choose the best IP path and forward packets. Keep-alive is only for client, server and any other intermediate session-aware devices.

which is only for my session ?

Does it mean that no one else can use that connection

That is the intention of TCP connections: it is an end-to-end connection intended for only those two parties.

If so - does it mean that keep alive-header - reduce the number of overlapped connection users ?

Define "overlapped connections". See HTTP persistent connection for some advantages and disadvantages, such as:

  • Lower CPU and memory usage (because fewer connections are open simultaneously).
  • Enables HTTP pipelining of requests and responses.
  • Reduced network congestion (fewer TCP connections).
  • Reduced latency in subsequent requests (no handshaking).

if so , for how long does the connection is saved to me ? (in other words , if I set keep alive- "keep" till when?)

An typical keep-alive response looks like this:

Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=100

See Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Keep-Alive Header for example (a draft for HTTP/2 where the keep-alive header is explained in greater detail than both 2616 and 2086):

  • A host sets the value of the timeout parameter to the time that the host will allows an idle connection to remain open before it is closed. A connection is idle if no data is sent or received by a host.

  • The max parameter indicates the maximum number of requests that a client will make, or that a server will allow to be made on the persistent connection. Once the specified number of requests and responses have been sent, the host that included the parameter could close the connection.

However, the server is free to close the connection after an arbitrary time or number of requests (just as long as it returns the response to the current request). How this is implemented depends on your HTTP server.

Javascript - How to show escape characters in a string?

JavaScript uses the \ (backslash) as an escape characters for:

  • \' single quote
  • \" double quote
  • \ backslash
  • \n new line
  • \r carriage return
  • \t tab
  • \b backspace
  • \f form feed
  • \v vertical tab (IE < 9 treats '\v' as 'v' instead of a vertical tab ('\x0B'). If cross-browser compatibility is a concern, use \x0B instead of \v.)
  • \0 null character (U+0000 NULL) (only if the next character is not a decimal digit; else it’s an octal escape sequence)

Note that the \v and \0 escapes are not allowed in JSON strings.

how to modify the size of a column

Regardless of what error Oracle SQL Developer may indicate in the syntax highlighting, actually running your alter statement exactly the way you originally had it works perfectly:

ALTER TABLE TEST_PROJECT2 MODIFY proj_name VARCHAR2(300);

You only need to add parenthesis if you need to alter more than one column at once, such as:

ALTER TABLE TEST_PROJECT2 MODIFY (proj_name VARCHAR2(400), proj_desc VARCHAR2(400));

How can I delay a method call for 1 second?

Best way to do is :

[self performSelector:@selector(YourFunctionName)
           withObject:(can be Self or Object from other Classes)

you can also pass nil as withObject parameter.

example :

[self performSelector:@selector(subscribe) withObject:self afterDelay:3.0 ];

Windows command to get service status?

Maybe this could be the best way to start a service and check the result

Of course from inside a Batch like File.BAT put something like this example but just replace "NameOfSercive" with the service name you want and replace the REM lines with your own code:

@ECHO OFF

REM Put whatever your Batch may do before trying to start the service

net start NameOfSercive 2>nul
if errorlevel 2 goto AlreadyRunning
if errorlevel 1 goto Error

REM Put Whatever you want in case Service was not running and start correctly

GOTO ContinueWithBatch

:AlreadyRunning
REM Put Whatever you want in case Service was already running
GOTO ContinueWithBatch

:Error
REM Put Whatever you want in case Service fail to start
GOTO ContinueWithBatch

:ContinueWithBatch

REM Put whatever else your Batch may do

Another thing is to check for its state without changing it, for that there is a much more simple way to do it, just run:

net start

As that, without parameters it will show a list with all services that are started...

So a simple grep or find after it on a pipe would fit...

Of course from inside a Batch like File.BAT put something like this example but just replace "NameOfSercive" with the service name you want and replace the REM lines with your own code:

@ECHO OFF

REM Put here any code to be run before check for Service

SET TemporalFile=TemporalFile.TXT
NET START | FIND /N "NameOfSercive" > %TemporalFile%
SET CountLines=0
FOR /F %%X IN (%TemporalFile%) DO SET /A CountLines=1+CountLines
IF 0==%CountLines% GOTO ServiceIsNotRunning

REM Put here any code to be run if Service Is Running

GOTO ContinueWithBatch

:ServiceIsNotRunning

REM Put here any code to be run if Service Is Not Running

GOTO ContinueWithBatch
:ContinueWithBatch
DEL -P %TemporalFile% 2>nul
SET TemporalFile=

REM Put here any code to be run after check for Service

Hope this can help!! It is what i normally use.

Android ListView selected item stay highlighted

From Avinash Kumar Pankaj's example

View v;

then at oncreate method

v = new View(getActivity());

and then onlistitemclick method i wrote

public void onListItemClick(ListView listView, View view, int position,
       long id) {
   v.setBackgroundResource(0);
   view.setBackgroundResource(R.color.green);
   v = view;
}

It worked for me. Thank you.

I replaced

v = new View(getActivity());

to

v = new View(this);

and the code worked well.

It is necessary the xml files 'colors' and 'bg_key' from previous examples too, as well as ListView attribute android:background="@drawable/bg_key"

How to use C++ in Go

Update: I've succeeded in linking a small test C++ class with Go

If you wrap you C++ code with a C interface you should be able to call your library with cgo (see the example of gmp in $GOROOT/misc/cgo/gmp).

I'm not sure if the idea of a class in C++ is really expressible in Go, as it doesn't have inheritance.

Here's an example:

I have a C++ class defined as:

// foo.hpp
class cxxFoo {
public:
  int a;
  cxxFoo(int _a):a(_a){};
  ~cxxFoo(){};
  void Bar();
};

// foo.cpp
#include <iostream>
#include "foo.hpp"
void
cxxFoo::Bar(void){
  std::cout<<this->a<<std::endl;
}

which I want to use in Go. I'll use the C interface

// foo.h
#ifdef __cplusplus
extern "C" {
#endif
  typedef void* Foo;
  Foo FooInit(void);
  void FooFree(Foo);
  void FooBar(Foo);
#ifdef __cplusplus
}
#endif

(I use a void* instead of a C struct so the compiler knows the size of Foo)

The implementation is:

//cfoo.cpp
#include "foo.hpp"
#include "foo.h"
Foo FooInit()
{
  cxxFoo * ret = new cxxFoo(1);
  return (void*)ret;
}
void FooFree(Foo f)
{
  cxxFoo * foo = (cxxFoo*)f;
  delete foo;
}
void FooBar(Foo f)
{
  cxxFoo * foo = (cxxFoo*)f;
  foo->Bar();
}

with all that done, the Go file is:

// foo.go
package foo
// #include "foo.h"
import "C"
import "unsafe"
type GoFoo struct {
     foo C.Foo;
}
func New()(GoFoo){
     var ret GoFoo;
     ret.foo = C.FooInit();
     return ret;
}
func (f GoFoo)Free(){
     C.FooFree(unsafe.Pointer(f.foo));
}
func (f GoFoo)Bar(){
     C.FooBar(unsafe.Pointer(f.foo));
}

The makefile I used to compile this was:

// makefile
TARG=foo
CGOFILES=foo.go
include $(GOROOT)/src/Make.$(GOARCH)
include $(GOROOT)/src/Make.pkg
foo.o:foo.cpp
    g++ $(_CGO_CFLAGS_$(GOARCH)) -fPIC -O2 -o $@ -c $(CGO_CFLAGS) $<
cfoo.o:cfoo.cpp
    g++ $(_CGO_CFLAGS_$(GOARCH)) -fPIC -O2 -o $@ -c $(CGO_CFLAGS) $<
CGO_LDFLAGS+=-lstdc++
$(elem)_foo.so: foo.cgo4.o foo.o cfoo.o
    gcc $(_CGO_CFLAGS_$(GOARCH)) $(_CGO_LDFLAGS_$(GOOS)) -o $@ $^ $(CGO_LDFLAGS)

Try testing it with:

// foo_test.go
package foo
import "testing"
func TestFoo(t *testing.T){
    foo := New();
    foo.Bar();
    foo.Free();
}

You'll need to install the shared library with make install, then run make test. Expected output is:

gotest
rm -f _test/foo.a _gotest_.6
6g -o _gotest_.6 foo.cgo1.go foo.cgo2.go foo_test.go
rm -f _test/foo.a
gopack grc _test/foo.a _gotest_.6  foo.cgo3.6

Detecting iOS / Android Operating system

One can use navigator.platform to get the operating system on which browser is installed.

function getPlatform() {
   var platform = ["Win32", "Android", "iOS"];

   for (var i = 0; i < platform.length; i++) {

       if (navigator.platform.indexOf(platform[i]) >- 1) {

           return platform[i];
       }
   }
}

getPlatform();

Transfer data between iOS and Android via Bluetooth?

This question has been asked many times on this site and the definitive answer is: NO, you can't connect an Android phone to an iPhone over Bluetooth, and YES Apple has restrictions that prevent this.

Some possible alternatives:

  1. Bonjour over WiFi, as you mentioned. However, I couldn't find a comprehensive tutorial for it.
  2. Some internet based sync service, like Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3. These usually have libraries for several platforms.
  3. Direct TCP/IP communication over sockets. (How to write a small (socket) server in iOS)
  4. Bluetooth Low Energy will be possible once the issues on the Android side are solved (Communicating between iOS and Android with Bluetooth LE)

Coolest alternative: use the Bump API. It has iOS and Android support and really easy to integrate. For small payloads this can be the most convenient solution.

Details on why you can't connect an arbitrary device to the iPhone. iOS allows only some bluetooth profiles to be used without the Made For iPhone (MFi) certification (HPF, A2DP, MAP...). The Serial Port Profile that you would require to implement the communication is bound to MFi membership. Membership to this program provides you to the MFi authentication module that has to be added to your hardware and takes care of authenticating the device towards the iPhone. Android phones don't have this module, so even though the physical connection may be possible to build up, the authentication step will fail. iPhone to iPhone communication is possible as both ends are able to authenticate themselves.

does linux shell support list data structure?

It supports lists, but not as a separate data structure (ignoring arrays for the moment).

The for loop iterates over a list (in the generic sense) of white-space separated values, regardless of how that list is created, whether literally:

for i in 1 2 3; do
    echo "$i"
done

or via parameter expansion:

listVar="1 2 3"
for i in $listVar; do
    echo "$i"
done

or command substitution:

for i in $(echo 1; echo 2; echo 3); do
    echo "$i"
done

An array is just a special parameter which can contain a more structured list of value, where each element can itself contain whitespace. Compare the difference:

array=("item 1" "item 2" "item 3")
for i in "${array[@]}"; do # The quotes are necessary here
    echo "$i"
done

list='"item 1" "item 2" "item 3"'
for i in $list; do
    echo $i
done
for i in "$list"; do
    echo $i
done
for i in ${array[@]}; do
    echo $i
done

Python csv string to array

You can convert a string to a file object using io.StringIO and then pass that to the csv module:

from io import StringIO
import csv

scsv = """text,with,Polish,non-Latin,letters
1,2,3,4,5,6
a,b,c,d,e,f
ges,zólty,waz,idzie,waska,drózka,
"""

f = StringIO(scsv)
reader = csv.reader(f, delimiter=',')
for row in reader:
    print('\t'.join(row))

simpler version with split() on newlines:

reader = csv.reader(scsv.split('\n'), delimiter=',')
for row in reader:
    print('\t'.join(row))

Or you can simply split() this string into lines using \n as separator, and then split() each line into values, but this way you must be aware of quoting, so using csv module is preferred.

On Python 2 you have to import StringIO as

from StringIO import StringIO

instead.

What is a practical, real world example of the Linked List?

I don't think there is a good analogy that could highlight the two important characteristics as opposed to an array: 1. efficient to insert after current item and 2. inefficient to find a specific item by index.

There's nothing like that because normally people don't deal with very large number of items where you need to insert or locate specific items. For example, if you have a bag of sand, that would be hundreds of millions of grains, but you don't need to locate a specific grain, and the order of grains isn't important.

When you deal with smaller collections, you can locate the needed item visually, or, in case of books in a library, you will have a dictinary-like organization.

The closest analogy is having a blind man who goes through linked items like links of chain, beads on a necklace, train cars, etc. He may be looking for specific item or needing to insert an item after current one. It might be good to add that the blind man can go through them very quickly, e.g. one million beads per second, but can only feel one link at a time, and cannot see the whole chain or part of it.

Note that this analogy is similar to a double-linked list, I can't think of a similar analogy with singly linked one, because having a physical connection implies ability to backtrack.

How can I reduce the waiting (ttfb) time

TTFB is something that happens behind the scenes. Your browser knows nothing about what happens behind the scenes.

You need to look into what queries are being run and how the website connects to the server.

This article might help understand TTFB, but otherwise you need to dig deeper into your application.

Why should I use core.autocrlf=true in Git?

For me.

Edit .gitattributes file.

add

*.dll binary

Then everything goes well.

Dictionary with list of strings as value

To do this manually, you'd need something like:

List<string> existing;
if (!myDic.TryGetValue(key, out existing)) {
    existing = new List<string>();
    myDic[key] = existing;
}
// At this point we know that "existing" refers to the relevant list in the
// dictionary, one way or another.
existing.Add(extraValue);

However, in many cases LINQ can make this trivial using ToLookup. For example, consider a List<Person> which you want to transform into a dictionary of "surname" to "first names for that surname". You could use:

var namesBySurname = people.ToLookup(person => person.Surname,
                                     person => person.FirstName);

Send form data using ajax

I have written myself a function that converts most of the stuff one may want to send via AJAX to GET of POST query.
Following part of the function might be of interest:

  if(data.tagName!=null&&data.tagName.toUpperCase()=="FORM") {
    //Get all the input elements in form
    var elem = data.elements;
    //Loop through the element array
    for(var i = 0; i < elem.length; i++) {
      //Ignore elements that are not supposed to be sent
      if(elem[i].disabled!=null&&elem[i].disabled!=false||elem[i].type=="button"||elem[i].name==null||(elem[i].type=="checkbox"&&elem[i].checked==false))
        continue;
      //Add & to any subsequent entries (that means every iteration except the first one)
      if(data_string.length>0)
        data_string+="&";
      //Get data for selectbox
      if (elem[i].tagName.toUpperCase() == "SELECT")
      {
        data_string += elem[i].name + "=" + encodeURIComponent(elem[i].options[elem[i].selectedIndex].value) ;
      }
      //Get data from checkbox
      else if(elem[i].type=="checkbox")
      {
        data_string += elem[i].name + "="+(elem[i].value==null?"on":elem[i].value);
      }
      //Get data from textfield
      else
      {
        data_string += elem[i].name + (elem[i].value!=""?"=" + encodeURIComponent(elem[i].value):"=");
      }
    }
    return data_string;
  }

It does not need jQuery since I don't use it. But I'm sure jquery's $.post accepts string as seconf argument.

Here is the whole function, other parts are not commented though. I can't promise there are no bugs in it:

function ajax_create_request_string(data, recursion) {
  var data_string = '';
  //Zpracovani formulare
  if(data.tagName!=null&&data.tagName.toUpperCase()=="FORM") {
    //Get all the input elements in form
    var elem = data.elements;
    //Loop through the element array
    for(var i = 0; i < elem.length; i++) {
      //Ignore elements that are not supposed to be sent
      if(elem[i].disabled!=null&&elem[i].disabled!=false||elem[i].type=="button"||elem[i].name==null||(elem[i].type=="checkbox"&&elem[i].checked==false))
        continue;
      //Add & to any subsequent entries (that means every iteration except the first one)
      if(data_string.length>0)
        data_string+="&";
      //Get data for selectbox
      if (elem[i].tagName.toUpperCase() == "SELECT")
      {
        data_string += elem[i].name + "=" + encodeURIComponent(elem[i].options[elem[i].selectedIndex].value) ;
      }
      //Get data from checkbox
      else if(elem[i].type=="checkbox")
      {
        data_string += elem[i].name + "="+(elem[i].value==null?"on":elem[i].value);
      }
      //Get data from textfield
      else
      {
        if(elem[i].className.indexOf("autoempty")!=-1) {
          data_string += elem[i].name+"=";
        }
        else
          data_string += elem[i].name + (elem[i].value!=""?"=" + encodeURIComponent(elem[i].value):"=");
      }
    }
    return data_string;
  }
  //Loop through array
  if(data instanceof Array) {
    for(var i=0; i<data.length; i++) {
      if(data_string!="")
        data_string+="&";
      data_string+=recursion+"["+i+"]="+data[i];
    }
    return data_string;
  }
  //Loop through object (like foreach)
  for(var i in data) {
    if(data_string!="")
      data_string+="&";
    if(typeof data[i]=="object") {
      if(recursion==null)
        data_string+= ajax_create_request_string(data[i], i);
      else
        data_string+= ajax_create_request_string(data[i], recursion+"["+i+"]");
    }
    else if(recursion==null)
      data_string+=i+"="+data[i];
    else
      data_string+=recursion+"["+i+"]="+data[i];

Android - Start service on boot

Following should work. I have verified. May be your problem is somewhere else.

Receiver:

public class MyReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver{

Android Crop Center of Bitmap

enter image description here

This can be achieved with: Bitmap.createBitmap(source, x, y, width, height)

if (srcBmp.getWidth() >= srcBmp.getHeight()){

  dstBmp = Bitmap.createBitmap(
     srcBmp,
     srcBmp.getWidth()/2 - srcBmp.getHeight()/2,
     0,
     srcBmp.getHeight(),
     srcBmp.getHeight()
     );

}else{

  dstBmp = Bitmap.createBitmap(
     srcBmp,
     0,
     srcBmp.getHeight()/2 - srcBmp.getWidth()/2,
     srcBmp.getWidth(),
     srcBmp.getWidth()
     );

Swift: Display HTML data in a label or textView

I know that this will look little over the top but ... This code will add html support to UILabel, UITextView, UIButton and you can easily add this support to any view that has attributed string support :

public protocol CSHasAttributedTextProtocol: AnyObject {
    func attributedText() -> NSAttributedString?
    func attributed(text: NSAttributedString?) -> Self
}

extension UIButton: CSHasAttributedTextProtocol {
    public func attributedText() -> NSAttributedString? {
        attributedTitle(for: .normal)
    }

    public func attributed(text: NSAttributedString?) -> Self {
        setAttributedTitle(text, for: .normal); return self
    }
}

extension UITextView: CSHasAttributedTextProtocol {
    public func attributedText() -> NSAttributedString? { attributedText }

    public func attributed(text: NSAttributedString?) -> Self { attributedText = text; return self }
}

extension UILabel: CSHasAttributedTextProtocol {
    public func attributedText() -> NSAttributedString? { attributedText }

}

Throw HttpResponseException or return Request.CreateErrorResponse?

The approach I have taken is to just throw exceptions from the api controller actions and have an exception filter registered that processes the exception and sets an appropriate response on the action execution context.

The filter exposes a fluent interface that provides a means of registering handlers for specific types of exceptions prior to registering the filter with global configuration.

The use of this filter enables centralized exception handling instead of spreading it across the controller actions. There are however cases where I will catch exceptions within the controller action and return a specific response if it does not make sense to centralize the handling of that particular exception.

Example registration of filter:

GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Filters.Add(
    new UnhandledExceptionFilterAttribute()
    .Register<KeyNotFoundException>(HttpStatusCode.NotFound)

    .Register<SecurityException>(HttpStatusCode.Forbidden)

    .Register<SqlException>(
        (exception, request) =>
        {
            var sqlException = exception as SqlException;

            if (sqlException.Number > 50000)
            {
                var response            = request.CreateResponse(HttpStatusCode.BadRequest);
                response.ReasonPhrase   = sqlException.Message.Replace(Environment.NewLine, String.Empty);

                return response;
            }
            else
            {
                return request.CreateResponse(HttpStatusCode.InternalServerError);
            }
        }
    )
);

Is there a function to split a string in PL/SQL?

There is apex_util.string_to_table - see my answer to this question.

Also, prior to the existence of the above function, I once posted a solution here on my blog.

Update

In later versions of APEX, apex_util.string_to_table is deprecated, and a similar function apex_string.split is preferred.
