How do I free memory in C?

You actually can't manually "free" memory in C, in the sense that the memory is released from the process back to the OS ... when you call malloc(), the underlying libc-runtime will request from the OS a memory region. On Linux, this may be done though a relatively "heavy" call like mmap(). Once this memory region is mapped to your program, there is a linked-list setup called the "free store" that manages this allocated memory region. When you call malloc(), it quickly looks though the free-store for a free block of memory at the size requested. It then adjusts the linked list to reflect that there has been a chunk of memory taken out of the originally allocated memory pool. When you call free() the memory block is placed back in the free-store as a linked-list node that indicates its an available chunk of memory.

If you request more memory than what is located in the free-store, the libc-runtime will again request more memory from the OS up to the limit of the OS's ability to allocate memory for running processes. When you free memory though, it's not returned back to the OS ... it's typically recycled back into the free-store where it can be used again by another call to malloc(). Thus, if you make a lot of calls to malloc() and free() with varying memory size requests, it could, in theory, cause a condition called "memory fragmentation", where there is enough space in the free-store to allocate your requested memory block, but not enough contiguous space for the size of the block you've requested. Thus the call to malloc() fails, and you're effectively "out-of-memory" even though there may be plenty of memory available as a total amount of bytes in the free-store.

How to install php-curl in Ubuntu 16.04

For Ubuntu 18.04 or PHP 7.2 users you can do:

apt-get install php7.2-curl

You can check your PHP version by running php -v to verify your PHP version and get the right curl version.

React-Native Button style not work

If you do not want to create your own button component, a quick and dirty solution is to wrap the button in a view, which allows you to at least apply layout styling.

For example this would create a row of buttons:

<View style={{flexDirection: 'row'}}>
    <View style={{flex:1 , marginRight:10}} >
        <Button title="Save" onPress={() => {}}></Button>
    </View>
    <View style={{flex:1}} >
        <Button title="Cancel" onPress={() => {}}></Button>
    </View>
</View>

Select from one table where not in another

Expanding on Sjoerd's anti-join, you can also use the easy to understand SELECT WHERE X NOT IN (SELECT) pattern.

SELECT pm.id FROM r2r.partmaster pm
WHERE pm.id NOT IN (SELECT pd.part_num FROM wpsapi4.product_details pd)

Note that you only need to use ` backticks on reserved words, names with spaces and such, not with normal column names.

On MySQL 5+ this kind of query runs pretty fast.
On MySQL 3/4 it's slow.

Make sure you have indexes on the fields in question
You need to have an index on pm.id, pd.part_num.

MySQL pivot table query with dynamic columns

Here's stored procedure, which will generate the table based on data from one table and column and data from other table and column.

The function 'sum(if(col = value, 1,0)) as value ' is used. You can choose from different functions like MAX(if()) etc.

delimiter //

  create procedure myPivot(
    in tableA varchar(255),
    in columnA varchar(255),
    in tableB varchar(255),
    in columnB varchar(255)
)
begin
  set @sql = NULL;
    set @sql = CONCAT('select group_concat(distinct concat(
            \'SUM(IF(',
        columnA,
        ' = \'\'\',',
        columnA,
        ',\'\'\', 1, 0)) AS \'\'\',',
        columnA,
            ',\'\'\'\') separator \', \') from ',
        tableA, ' into @sql');
    -- select @sql;

    PREPARE stmt FROM @sql;
    EXECUTE stmt;

    DEALLOCATE PREPARE stmt;
    -- select @sql;

    SET @sql = CONCAT('SELECT p.',
        columnB,
        ', ',
        @sql,
        ' FROM ', tableB, ' p GROUP BY p.',
        columnB,'');

    -- select @sql;

    /* */
    PREPARE stmt FROM @sql;
    EXECUTE stmt;
    /* */
    DEALLOCATE PREPARE stmt;
end//

delimiter ;

Can I install Python 3.x and 2.x on the same Windows computer?

I would assume so, I have Python 2.4, 2.5 and 2.6 installed side-by-side on the same computer.

How to use LINQ to select object with minimum or maximum property value

Another implementation, which could work with nullable selector keys, and for the collection of reference type returns null if no suitable elements found. This could be helpful then processing database results for example.

  public static class IEnumerableExtensions
  {
    /// <summary>
    /// Returns the element with the maximum value of a selector function.
    /// </summary>
    /// <typeparam name="TSource">The type of the elements of source.</typeparam>
    /// <typeparam name="TKey">The type of the key returned by keySelector.</typeparam>
    /// <param name="source">An IEnumerable collection values to determine the element with the maximum value of.</param>
    /// <param name="keySelector">A function to extract the key for each element.</param>
    /// <exception cref="System.ArgumentNullException">source or keySelector is null.</exception>
    /// <exception cref="System.InvalidOperationException">source contains no elements.</exception>
    /// <returns>The element in source with the maximum value of a selector function.</returns>
    public static TSource MaxBy<TSource, TKey>(this IEnumerable<TSource> source, Func<TSource, TKey> keySelector) => MaxOrMinBy(source, keySelector, 1);

    /// <summary>
    /// Returns the element with the minimum value of a selector function.
    /// </summary>
    /// <typeparam name="TSource">The type of the elements of source.</typeparam>
    /// <typeparam name="TKey">The type of the key returned by keySelector.</typeparam>
    /// <param name="source">An IEnumerable collection values to determine the element with the minimum value of.</param>
    /// <param name="keySelector">A function to extract the key for each element.</param>
    /// <exception cref="System.ArgumentNullException">source or keySelector is null.</exception>
    /// <exception cref="System.InvalidOperationException">source contains no elements.</exception>
    /// <returns>The element in source with the minimum value of a selector function.</returns>
    public static TSource MinBy<TSource, TKey>(this IEnumerable<TSource> source, Func<TSource, TKey> keySelector) => MaxOrMinBy(source, keySelector, -1);

    private static TSource MaxOrMinBy<TSource, TKey>
      (IEnumerable<TSource> source, Func<TSource, TKey> keySelector, int sign)
    {
      if (source == null) throw new ArgumentNullException(nameof(source));
      if (keySelector == null) throw new ArgumentNullException(nameof(keySelector));
      Comparer<TKey> comparer = Comparer<TKey>.Default;
      TKey value = default(TKey);
      TSource result = default(TSource);

      bool hasValue = false;

      foreach (TSource element in source)
      {
        TKey x = keySelector(element);
        if (x != null)
        {
          if (!hasValue)
          {
            value = x;
            result = element;
            hasValue = true;
          }
          else if (sign * comparer.Compare(x, value) > 0)
          {
            value = x;
            result = element;
          }
        }
      }

      if ((result != null) && !hasValue)
        throw new InvalidOperationException("The source sequence is empty");

      return result;
    }
  }

Example:

public class A
{
  public int? a;
  public A(int? a) { this.a = a; }
}

var b = a.MinBy(x => x.a);
var c = a.MaxBy(x => x.a);

Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set()

If you are running your application just on localhost and it is not yet live, I believe it is very difficult to send mail using this.

Once you put your application online, I believe that this problem should be automatically solved. By the way,ini_set() helps you to change the values in php.ini during run time.

This is the same question as Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25

Is Xamarin free in Visual Studio 2015?

If you go to the visualstudio.com Visual Studio 2015 RC cross-platform and mobile apps page, then read and scroll to the bottom, it appears that Microsoft is including Xamarin, and upon installing it you do have, as James said, the Xamarin Starter edition. In 2015 RC go to Tools, Xamarin Account to see your Xamarin license. I do not know the limitations, or any expiration date, of this Starter Xamarin Account.

Still, I don't know about you, but the Visual Studio 2015 RC "Community" edition I installed expires in less than 180 days. (Check the Help menu, go to "About...", and click on your license status to check.)

Let's say Xamarin Starter edition is free, but Visual Studio 2015 "Community" has an expiration date. So the bigger question might be whether Visual Studio 2015 "Community" will be free.

Without Xamarin though, Microsoft is offering C++ tools for cross-platform development, but scroll down to the bottom of the page and you might be surprised or confused at the download link description.

What is the best way to compare floats for almost-equality in Python?

I'm not aware of anything in the Python standard library (or elsewhere) that implements Dawson's AlmostEqual2sComplement function. If that's the sort of behaviour you want, you'll have to implement it yourself. (In which case, rather than using Dawson's clever bitwise hacks you'd probably do better to use more conventional tests of the form if abs(a-b) <= eps1*(abs(a)+abs(b)) + eps2 or similar. To get Dawson-like behaviour you might say something like if abs(a-b) <= eps*max(EPS,abs(a),abs(b)) for some small fixed EPS; this isn't exactly the same as Dawson, but it's similar in spirit.

jQuery: Wait/Delay 1 second without executing code

Javascript is an asynchronous programming language so you can't stop the execution for a of time; the only way you can [pseudo]stop an execution is using setTimeout() that is not a delay but a "delayed function callback".

How to make bootstrap column height to 100% row height?

You can solve that using display table.

Here is the updated JSFiddle that solves your problem.

CSS

.body {
    display: table;
    background-color: green;
}

.left-side {
    background-color: blue;
    float: none;
    display: table-cell;
    border: 1px solid;
}

.right-side {
    background-color: red;
    float: none;
    display: table-cell;
    border: 1px solid;
}

HTML

<div class="row body">
        <div class="col-xs-9 left-side">
            <p>sdfsdf</p>
            <p>sdfsdf</p>
            <p>sdfsdf</p>
            <p>sdfsdf</p>
            <p>sdfsdf</p>
            <p>sdfsdf</p>
        </div>
        <div class="col-xs-3 right-side">
            asdfdf
        </div>
    </div>

Pressed <button> selector

Should we include a little JS? Because CSS was not basically created for this job. CSS was just a style sheet to add styles to the HTML, but its pseudo classes can do something that the basic CSS can't do. For example button:active active is pseudo.

Reference:

http://css-tricks.com/pseudo-class-selectors/ You can learn more about pseudo here!

Your code:

The code that you're having the basic but helpfull. And yes :active will only occur once the click event is triggered.

button {
font-size: 18px;
border: 2px solid gray;
border-radius: 100px;
width: 100px;
height: 100px;
}

button:active {
font-size: 18px;
border: 2px solid red;
border-radius: 100px;
width: 100px;
height: 100px;
}

This is what CSS would do, what rlemon suggested is good, but that would as he suggested would require a tag.

How to use CSS:

You can use :focus too. :focus would work once the click is made and would stay untill you click somewhere else, this was the CSS, you were trying to use CSS, so use :focus to make the buttons change.

What JS would do:

The JavaScript's jQuery library is going to help us for this code. Here is the example:

$('button').click(function () {
  $(this).css('border', '1px solid red');
}

This will make sure that the button stays red even if the click gets out. To change the focus type (to change the color of red to other) you can use this:

$('button').click(function () {
  $(this).css('border', '1px solid red');
  // find any other button with a specific id, and change it back to white like
  $('button#red').css('border', '1px solid white');
}

This way, you will create a navigation menu. Which will automatically change the color of the tabs as you click on them. :)

Hope you get the answer. Good luck! Cheers.

How do I use modulus for float/double?

I thought the regular modulus operator would work for this in java, but it can't be hard to code. Just divide the numerator by the denominator, and take the integer portion of the result. Multiply that by the denominator, and subtract the result from the numerator.

x = n / d
xint = Integer portion of x
result = n - d * xint

Changing the CommandTimeout in SQL Management studio

Right click in the query pane, select Query Options... and in the Execution->General section (the default when you first open it) there is an Execution time-out setting.

Entity Framework and Connection Pooling

  1. Connection pooling is handled as in any other ADO.NET application. Entity connection still uses traditional database connection with traditional connection string. I believe you can turn off connnection pooling in connection string if you don't want to use it. (read more about SQL Server Connection Pooling (ADO.NET))
  2. Never ever use global context. ObjectContext internally implements several patterns including Identity Map and Unit of Work. Impact of using global context is different per application type.
  3. For web applications use single context per request. For web services use single context per call. In WinForms or WPF application use single context per form or per presenter. There can be some special requirements which will not allow to use this approach but in most situation this is enough.

If you want to know what impact has single object context for WPF / WinForm application check this article. It is about NHibernate Session but the idea is same.

Edit:

When you use EF it by default loads each entity only once per context. The first query creates entity instace and stores it internally. Any subsequent query which requires entity with the same key returns this stored instance. If values in the data store changed you still receive the entity with values from the initial query. This is called Identity map pattern. You can force the object context to reload the entity but it will reload a single shared instance.

Any changes made to the entity are not persisted until you call SaveChanges on the context. You can do changes in multiple entities and store them at once. This is called Unit of Work pattern. You can't selectively say which modified attached entity you want to save.

Combine these two patterns and you will see some interesting effects. You have only one instance of entity for the whole application. Any changes to the entity affect the whole application even if changes are not yet persisted (commited). In the most times this is not what you want. Suppose that you have an edit form in WPF application. You are working with the entity and you decice to cancel complex editation (changing values, adding related entities, removing other related entities, etc.). But the entity is already modified in shared context. What will you do? Hint: I don't know about any CancelChanges or UndoChanges on ObjectContext.

I think we don't have to discuss server scenario. Simply sharing single entity among multiple HTTP requests or Web service calls makes your application useless. Any request can just trigger SaveChanges and save partial data from another request because you are sharing single unit of work among all of them. This will also have another problem - context and any manipulation with entities in the context or a database connection used by the context is not thread safe.

Even for a readonly application a global context is not a good choice because you probably want fresh data each time you query the application.

How best to determine if an argument is not sent to the JavaScript function

There are significant differences. Let's set up some test cases:

var unused; // value will be undefined
Test("test1", "some value");
Test("test2");
Test("test3", unused);
Test("test4", null);
Test("test5", 0);
Test("test6", "");

With the first method you describe, only the second test will use the default value. The second method will default all but the first (as JS will convert undefined, null, 0, and "" into the boolean false. And if you were to use Tom's method, only the fourth test will use the default!

Which method you choose really depends on your intended behavior. If values other than undefined are allowable for argument2, then you'll probably want some variation on the first; if a non-zero, non-null, non-empty value is desired, then the second method is ideal - indeed, it is often used to quickly eliminate such a wide range of values from consideration.

What is pluginManagement in Maven's pom.xml?

pluginManagement: is an element that is seen along side plugins. Plugin Management contains plugin elements in much the same way, except that rather than configuring plugin information for this particular project build, it is intended to configure project builds that inherit from this one. However, this only configures plugins that are actually referenced within the plugins element in the children. The children have every right to override pluginManagement definitions.

How to save a plot as image on the disk?

To add to these answers, if you have an R script containing calls that generate plots to screen (the native device), then these can all be saved to a pdf file (the default device for a non-interactive shell) "Rplots.pdf" (the default name) by redirecting the script into R from the terminal (assuming you are running linux or OS X), e.g.:

R < myscript.R --no-save

This could be converted to jpg/png as necessary

Differences between SP initiated SSO and IDP initiated SSO

In IDP Init SSO (Unsolicited Web SSO) the Federation process is initiated by the IDP sending an unsolicited SAML Response to the SP. In SP-Init, the SP generates an AuthnRequest that is sent to the IDP as the first step in the Federation process and the IDP then responds with a SAML Response. IMHO ADFSv2 support for SAML2.0 Web SSO SP-Init is stronger than its IDP-Init support re: integration with 3rd Party Fed products (mostly revolving around support for RelayState) so if you have a choice you'll want to use SP-Init as it'll probably make life easier with ADFSv2.

Here are some simple SSO descriptions from the PingFederate 8.0 Getting Started Guide that you can poke through that may help as well -- https://documentation.pingidentity.com/pingfederate/pf80/index.shtml#gettingStartedGuide/task/idpInitiatedSsoPOST.html

Update and left outer join statements

The Left join in this query is pointless:

UPDATE md SET md.status = '3'
FROM pd_mounting_details AS md
LEFT OUTER JOIN pd_order_ecolid AS oe ON md.order_data = oe.id

It would update all rows of pd_mounting_details, whether or not a matching row exists in pd_order_ecolid. If you wanted to only update matching rows, it should be an inner join.

If you want to apply some condition based on the join occurring or not, you need to add a WHERE clause and/or a CASE expression in your SET clause.

What is the meaning of git reset --hard origin/master?

git reset --hard origin/master

says: throw away all my staged and unstaged changes, forget everything on my current local branch and make it exactly the same as origin/master.

You probably wanted to ask this before you ran the command. The destructive nature is hinted at by using the same words as in "hard reset".

How to specify a local file within html using the file: scheme?

For apache look up SymLink or you can solve via the OS with Symbolic Links or on linux set up a library link/etc

My answer is one method specifically to windows 10.

So my method involves mapping a network drive to U:/ (e.g. I use G:/ for Google Drive)

open cmd and type hostname (example result: LAPTOP-G666P000, you could use your ip instead, but using a static hostname for identifying yourself makes more sense if your network stops)

Press Windows_key + E > right click 'This PC' > press N (It's Map Network drive, NOT add a network location)

If you are right clicking the shortcut on the desktop you need to press N then enter

Fill out U: or G: or Z: or whatever you want Example Address: \\LAPTOP-G666P000\c$\Users\username\

Then you can use <a href="file:///u:/2ndFile.html"><button type="submit">Local file</button> like in your question

related: You can also use this method for FTPs, and setup multiple drives for different relative paths on that same network.

related2: I have used http://localhost/c$ etc before on some WAMP/apache servers too before, you can use .htaccess for control/security but I recommend to not do so on a live/production machine -- or any other symlink documentroot example you can google

How do you remove a specific revision in the git history?

So here is the scenario that I faced, and how I solved it.

[branch-a]

[Hundreds of commits] -> [R] -> [I]

here R is the commit that I needed to be removed, and I is a single commit that comes after R

I made a revert commit and squashed them together

git revert [commit id of R]
git rebase -i HEAD~3

During the interactive rebase squash the last 2 commits.

They should be pretty much the same. The difference isn't going to matter. I would go with sprintf since it requires less code.

How to configure SMTP settings in web.config

Set IIS to forward your mail to the remote server. The specifics vary greatly depending on the version of IIS. For IIS 7.5:

  1. Open IIS Manager
  2. Connect to your server if needed
  3. Select the server node; you should see an SMTP option on the right in the ASP.NET section
  4. Double-click the SMTP icon.
  5. Select the "Deliver e-mail to SMTP server" option and enter your server name, credentials, etc.

How do I find Waldo with Mathematica?

My guess at a "bulletproof way to do this" (think CIA finding Waldo in any satellite image any time, not just a single image without competing elements, like striped shirts)... I would train a Boltzmann machine on many images of Waldo - all variations of him sitting, standing, occluded, etc.; shirt, hat, camera, and all the works. You don't need a large corpus of Waldos (maybe 3-5 will be enough), but the more the better.

This will assign clouds of probabilities to various elements occurring in whatever the correct arrangement, and then establish (via segmentation) what an average object size is, fragment the source image into cells of objects which most resemble individual people (considering possible occlusions and pose changes), but since Waldo pictures usually include a LOT of people at about the same scale, this should be a very easy task, then feed these segments of the pre-trained Boltzmann machine. It will give you probability of each one being Waldo. Take one with the highest probability.

This is how OCR, ZIP code readers, and strokeless handwriting recognition work today. Basically you know the answer is there, you know more or less what it should look like, and everything else may have common elements, but is definitely "not it", so you don't bother with the "not it"s, you just look of the likelihood of "it" among all possible "it"s you've seen before" (in ZIP codes for example, you'd train BM for just 1s, just 2s, just 3s, etc., then feed each digit to each machine, and pick one that has most confidence). This works a lot better than a single neural network learning features of all numbers.

Matplotlib scatter plot legend

if you are using matplotlib version 3.1.1 or above, you can try:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
from matplotlib.colors import ListedColormap

x = [1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9]
y = [0, 0, 5, 8, 8, 8]
classes = ['A', 'B', 'C']
values = [0, 0, 1, 2, 2, 2]
colours = ListedColormap(['r','b','g'])
scatter = plt.scatter(x, y,c=values, cmap=colours)
plt.legend(handles=scatter.legend_elements()[0], labels=classes)

How to reverse apply a stash?

git stash[save] takes your working directory state, and your index state, and stashes them away, setting index and working area to HEAD version.

git stash apply brings back those changes, so git reset --hard would remove them again.

git stash pop brings back those changes and removes top stashed change, so git stash [save] would return to previous (pre-pop) state in this case.

How to find length of digits in an integer?

If you want the length of an integer as in the number of digits in the integer, you can always convert it to string like str(133) and find its length like len(str(123)).

How do I pass a class as a parameter in Java?

Class as paramater. Example.

Three classes:

class TestCar {

    private int UnlockCode = 111;
    protected boolean hasAirCondition = true;
    String brand = "Ford";
    public String licensePlate = "Arizona 111";
}

--

class Terminal {

public void hackCar(TestCar car) {
     System.out.println(car.hasAirCondition);
     System.out.println(car.licensePlate);
     System.out.println(car.brand);
     }
}

--

class Story {

    public static void main(String args[]) {
        TestCar testCar = new TestCar();
        Terminal terminal = new Terminal();
        terminal.hackCar(testCar);
    }

}

In class Terminal method hackCar() take class TestCar as parameter.

Add multiple items to a list

Another useful way is with Concat.
More information in the official documentation.

List<string> first = new List<string> { "One", "Two", "Three" };
List<string> second = new List<string>() { "Four", "Five" };
first.Concat(second);

The output will be.

One

Looping over elements in jQuery

I have used the following before:

var my_form = $('#form-id');
var data = {};

$('input:not([type=checkbox]), input[type=checkbox]:selected, select, textarea', my_form).each(
    function() {
        var name = $(this).attr('name');
        var val = $(this).val();

        if (!data.hasOwnProperty(name)) {
            data[name] = new Array;
        }

        data[name].push(val);
    }
);

This is just written from memory, so might contain mistakes, but this should make an object called data that contains the values for all your inputs.

Note that you have to deal with checkboxes in a special way, to avoid getting the values of unchecked checkboxes. The same is probably true of radio inputs.

Also note using arrays for storing the values, as for one input name, you might have values from several inputs (checkboxes in particular).

Load properties file in JAR?

The problem is that you are using getSystemResourceAsStream. Use simply getResourceAsStream. System resources load from the system classloader, which is almost certainly not the class loader that your jar is loaded into when run as a webapp.

It works in Eclipse because when launching an application, the system classloader is configured with your jar as part of its classpath. (E.g. java -jar my.jar will load my.jar in the system class loader.) This is not the case with web applications - application servers use complex class loading to isolate webapplications from each other and from the internals of the application server. For example, see the tomcat classloader how-to, and the diagram of the classloader hierarchy used.

EDIT: Normally, you would call getClass().getResourceAsStream() to retrieve a resource in the classpath, but as you are fetching the resource in a static initializer, you will need to explicitly name a class that is in the classloader you want to load from. The simplest approach is to use the class containing the static initializer, e.g.

[public] class MyClass {
  static
  {
    ...
    props.load(MyClass.class.getResourceAsStream("/someProps.properties"));
  }
}

Declaring a variable and setting its value from a SELECT query in Oracle

SELECT INTO

DECLARE
   the_variable NUMBER;

BEGIN
   SELECT my_column INTO the_variable FROM my_table;
END;

Make sure that the query only returns a single row:

By default, a SELECT INTO statement must return only one row. Otherwise, PL/SQL raises the predefined exception TOO_MANY_ROWS and the values of the variables in the INTO clause are undefined. Make sure your WHERE clause is specific enough to only match one row

If no rows are returned, PL/SQL raises NO_DATA_FOUND. You can guard against this exception by selecting the result of an aggregate function, such as COUNT(*) or AVG(), where practical. These functions are guaranteed to return a single value, even if no rows match the condition.

A SELECT ... BULK COLLECT INTO statement can return multiple rows. You must set up collection variables to hold the results. You can declare associative arrays or nested tables that grow as needed to hold the entire result set.

The implicit cursor SQL and its attributes %NOTFOUND, %FOUND, %ROWCOUNT, and %ISOPEN provide information about the execution of a SELECT INTO statement.

Convert SVG to image (JPEG, PNG, etc.) in the browser

jbeard4 solution worked beautifully.

I'm using Raphael SketchPad to create an SVG. Link to the files in step 1.

For a Save button (id of svg is "editor", id of canvas is "canvas"):

$("#editor_save").click(function() {

// the canvg call that takes the svg xml and converts it to a canvas
canvg('canvas', $("#editor").html());

// the canvas calls to output a png
var canvas = document.getElementById("canvas");
var img = canvas.toDataURL("image/png");
// do what you want with the base64, write to screen, post to server, etc...
});

Checking out Git tag leads to "detached HEAD state"

Yes, it is normal. This is because you checkout a single commit, that doesnt have a head. Especially it is (sooner or later) not a head of any branch.

But there is usually no problem with that state. You may create a new branch from the tag, if this makes you feel safer :)

What is the difference between a JavaBean and a POJO?

Pojo - Plain old java object

pojo class is an ordinary class without any specialties,class totally loosely coupled from technology/framework.the class does not implements from technology/framework and does not extends from technology/framework api that class is called pojo class.

pojo class can implements interfaces and extend classes but the super class or interface should not be an technology/framework.

Examples :

1.

class ABC{
----
}

ABC class not implementing or extending from technology/framework that's why this is pojo class.

2.

class ABC extends HttpServlet{
---
}

ABC class extending from servlet technology api that's why this is not a pojo class.

3.

class ABC implements java.rmi.Remote{
----
}

ABC class implements from rmi api that's why this is not a pojo class.

4.

class ABC implements java.io.Serializable{
---
}

this interface is part of java language not a part of technology/framework.so this is pojo class.

5.

class ABC extends Thread{
--
}

here thread is also class of java language so this is also a pojo class.

6.

class ABC extends Test{
--
}

if Test class extends or implements from technologies/framework then ABC is also not a pojo class because it inherits the properties of Test class. if Test class is not a pojo class then ABC class also not a pojo class.

7.

now this point is an exceptional case

@Entity
class ABC{
--
}

@Entity is an annotation given by hibernate api or jpa api but still we can call this class as pojo class. class with annotations given from technology/framework is called pojo class by this exceptional case.

Timer function to provide time in nano seconds using C++

In general, for timing how long it takes to call a function, you want to do it many more times than just once. If you call your function only once and it takes a very short time to run, you still have the overhead of actually calling the timer functions and you don't know how long that takes.

For example, if you estimate your function might take 800 ns to run, call it in a loop ten million times (which will then take about 8 seconds). Divide the total time by ten million to get the time per call.

How to declare an array inside MS SQL Server Stored Procedure?

Great question and great idea, but in SQL you'll need to do this:

For data type datetime, something like this-

declare @BeginDate    datetime = '1/1/2016',
        @EndDate      datetime = '12/1/2016'
create table #months (dates datetime)
declare @var datetime = @BeginDate
   while @var < dateadd(MONTH, +1, @EndDate)
   Begin
          insert into #months Values(@var)
          set @var = Dateadd(MONTH, +1, @var)
   end

If all you really want is numbers, do this-

create table #numbas (digit int)
declare @var int = 1 --your starting digit
    while @var <= 12        --your ending digit
    begin
        insert into #numbas Values(@var)
        set @var = @var +1
    end

Nginx: stat() failed (13: permission denied)

I had the same issue, I am using Plesk Onyx 17 with Centos7. I could see this error in proxy_error_log under the affected domain's logs. All the dirs/files in /var/www/vhosts/ are owned by respective users (domain owners) and you can see that all of them are in psacln group. So solution was to add nginx also to this group, so he can see what he needs:

usermod -aG psacln nginx

And indeed, restart nginx and reload page with Ctrl+F5.

Follow steps given in https://michlstechblog.info/blog/python-install-python-with-pip-on-windows-by-the-embeddable-zip-file/. Replace x with version number of Python.

  1. Open the pythonxx.__pth file, located in your python folder.
  2. Edit the contents (e.g. D:\Pythonx.x.x to the following):
 D:\Pythonx.x.x
 D:\Pythonx.x.x\DLLs
 D:\Pythonx.x.x\lib
 D:\Pythonx.x.x\lib\plat-win
 D:\Pythonx.x.x\lib\site-packages

Validate phone number with JavaScript

I would suggest using something clearer (especially thinking to who will have to maintain the code)... what about:

var formats = "(999)999-9999|999-999-9999|9999999999";
var r = RegExp("^(" +
               formats
                 .replace(/([\(\)])/g, "\\$1")
                 .replace(/9/g,"\\d") +
               ")$");

where the regexp is built from a clear template ? Adding a new one would then be a no-brainer and may be even the customer itself could be able to do that in a "options" page.

How long would it take a non-programmer to learn C#, the .NET Framework, and SQL?

Well, it will take you forever. There is so much to learn about programming that 10 years are not enough.

http://norvig.com/21-days.html

Don't get me wrong, you will learn the basics quickly enough, but to become good at it will take much longer.

You should focus on an area and try to make some examples, if you choose web development, start with an hello world web page, then add some code to it. Learn about postbacks, viewstate and Sessions. Try to master ifs, cycles and functions, you really have a lot to cover, it's not easy to say "this is the best way to learn".

I guess in the end you will learn on a need to do basis.

How to convert URL parameters to a JavaScript object?

Facebook Graph API : get larger pictures in one request

The best way to get all friends (who are using the App too, of course) with correct picture sizes is to use field expansion, either with one of the size tags (square, small, normal, large):

/me/friends?fields=picture.type(large)

(edit: this does not work anymore)

...or you can specify the width/height:

me/friends?fields=picture.width(100).height(100)

Btw, you can also write it like this:

me?fields=friends{picture.type(large)}

Angular2 dynamic change CSS property

Just use standard CSS variables:

Your global css (eg: styles.css)

body {
  --my-var: #000
}

In your component's css or whatever it is:

span {
  color: var(--my-var)
}

Then you can change the value of the variable directly with TS/JS by setting inline style to html element:

document.querySelector("body").style.cssText = "--my-var: #000";

Otherwise you can use jQuery for it:

$("body").css("--my-var", "#fff");

HTML controls the semantic meaning of the elements. CSS controls the layout/style of the page. Use CSS when you are controlling your layout.

In short, never use size=""

adding multiple entries to a HashMap at once in one statement

Here's a simple class that will accomplish what you want

import java.util.HashMap;

public class QuickHash extends HashMap<String,String> {
    public QuickHash(String...KeyValuePairs) {
        super(KeyValuePairs.length/2);
        for(int i=0;i<KeyValuePairs.length;i+=2)
            put(KeyValuePairs[i], KeyValuePairs[i+1]);
    }
}

And then to use it

Map<String, String> Foo=QuickHash(
    "a", "1",
    "b", "2"
);

This yields {a:1, b:2}

What is boilerplate code?

You can refer to it as "snippets" or more accurately "collection of snippets" . The term I think was coined from the press and printing industry, where they used actual "plates" and then re-used them as chunks again.. In modern-day internet it is a part of an ongoing (annoying IMHO) trend of using fancy terms for simple things in order to look more trendy and sophisticated . see RESPONSIVE = adaptable / fluid.

curl POST format for CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS

According to the PHP manual, data passed to cURL as a string should be URLencoded. See the page for curl_setopt() and search for CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS.

Create table (structure) from existing table

Its probably also worth mentioning that you can do the following:

Right click the table you want to duplicate > Script Table As > Create To > New Query Editor Window

Then, where is says the name of the table you just right clicked in the script that has been generated, change the name to what ever you want your new table to be called and click Execute

How do I use MySQL through XAMPP?

  • After successful installation execute xampp-control.exe in XAMPP folder
  • Start Apache and MySQL enter image description here

  • Open browser and in url type localhost or 127.0.0.1

  • then you are welcomed with dashboard

By default your port is listing with 80.If you want you can change it to your desired port number in httpd.conf file.(If port 80 is already using with other app then you have to change it).

For example you changed port number 80 to 8090 then you can run as 'localhost:8090' or '127.0.0.1:8090'

Which browsers support <script async="async" />?

There's two parts to this question, really.

  1. Q: Which browsers support the "async" attribute on a script tag in markup?

    A: IE10p2+, Chrome 11+, Safari 5+, Firefox 3.6+

  2. Q: Which browsers support the new spec that defines behavior for the "async" property in JavaScript, on a dynamically created script element?

    A: IE10p2+, Chrome 12+, Safari 5.1+, Firefox 4+

As for Opera, they are very close to releasing a version which will support both types of async. I've been working with them closely on this, and it should come out soon (I hope!).

More info on ordered-async (aka, "async=false") can be found here: http://wiki.whatwg.org/wiki/Dynamic_Script_Execution_Order

Also, to test if a browser supports the new dynamic async property behavior: http://test.getify.com/test-async/

spark submit add multiple jars in classpath

I was trying to connect to mysql from the python code that was executed using spark-submit.

I was using HDP sandbox that was using Ambari. Tried lot of options such as --jars, --driver-class-path, etc, but none worked.

Solution

Copy the jar in /usr/local/miniconda/lib/python2.7/site-packages/pyspark/jars/

As of now I'm not sure if it's a solution or a quick hack, but since I'm working on POC so it kind of works for me.

Android ImageView's onClickListener does not work

Ok,

I managed to solve this tricky issue. The thing was like I was using FrameLayout. Don't know why but it came to my mind that may be the icon would be getting hidden behind some other view.

I tried putting the icon at the end of my layout and now I am able to see the Toast as well as the Log.

Thank you everybody for taking time to solve the issue.. Was surely tricky..

How to write string literals in python without having to escape them?

If you're dealing with very large strings, specifically multiline strings, be aware of the triple-quote syntax:

a = r"""This is a multiline string
with more than one line
in the source code."""

C++ error: "Array must be initialized with a brace enclosed initializer"

You can't initialize arrays like this:

int cipher[Array_size][Array_size]=0;

The syntax for 2D arrays is:

int cipher[Array_size][Array_size]={{0}};

Note the curly braces on the right hand side of the initialization statement.

for 1D arrays:

int tomultiply[Array_size]={0};

Flask ImportError: No Module Named Flask

The only way I could solve was by adding my users python dir to myapp.wsgi file. As an example:

sys.path.append('/home/deployer/anaconda3/lib/python3.5/site-packages')

I guess that if you install the packages in the global enviroment, you should have no problem, but I had my python packages installed as user.

Python ImportError: No module named wx

Windows:

  1. Go to C:\Python27\Lib\site-packages\ find the folder wx-<version>-msw or similar

  2. Move the wx from the above folder to C:\Python27\Lib\site-packages\

How do I shutdown, restart, or log off Windows via a bat file?

The most common ways to use the shutdown command are:

  • shutdown -s — Shuts down.
  • shutdown -r — Restarts.
  • shutdown -l — Logs off.
  • shutdown -h — Hibernates.

    Note: There is a common pitfall wherein users think -h means "help" (which it does for every other command-line program... except shutdown.exe, where it means "hibernate"). They then run shutdown -h and accidentally turn off their computers. Watch out for that.

  • shutdown -i — "Interactive mode". Instead of performing an action, it displays a GUI dialog.

  • shutdown -a — Aborts a previous shutdown command.

The commands above can be combined with these additional options:

  • -f — Forces programs to exit. Prevents the shutdown process from getting stuck.
  • -t <seconds> — Sets the time until shutdown. Use -t 0 to shutdown immediately.
  • -c <message> — Adds a shutdown message. The message will end up in the Event Log.
  • -y — Forces a "yes" answer to all shutdown queries.

    Note: This option is not documented in any official documentation. It was discovered by these StackOverflow users.

I want to make sure some other really good answers are also mentioned along with this one. Here they are in no particular order.

Android webview launches browser when calling loadurl

I was facing the same problem and I found the solution Android's official Documentation about WebView

Here is my onCreateView() method and here i used two methods to open the urls

Method 1 is opening url in Browser and

Method 2 is opening url in your desired WebView.
And I am using Method 2 for my Application and this is my code:

public class MainActivity extends Activity {
   private WebView myWebView;

     @Override
     public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState) {

      View rootView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_webpage_detail, container, false);

      // Show the dummy content as text in a TextView.
      if (mItem != null) {

         /* Method : 1
          This following line is working fine BUT when we click the menu item then it opens the URL in BROWSER not in WebView */
         //((WebView)   rootView.findViewById(R.id.detail_area)).loadUrl(mItem.url);

        // Method : 2
        myWebView = (WebView) rootView.findViewById(R.id.detail_area); // get your WebView form your xml file
        myWebView.setWebViewClient(new WebViewClient()); // set the WebViewClient
        myWebView.loadUrl(mItem.url); // Load your desired url
    }

    return rootView;
}                                                                                               }

Failed to open the HAX device! HAX is not working and emulator runs in emulation mode emulator

I had the same problem recently.

First you need to install HAXM in the Android SDK Manager (from the error message I think you already did that). This will enable the emulator to use the HAXM framework, and for this it needs to open the HAX device. On your system this cannot be found, hence the error message.

To make this device available, you need to install the HAXM driver from Intel. You can find it here: http://software.intel.com/en-us/android/articles/intel-hardware-accelerated-execution-manager (You also need to enable virtualization in your computer BIOS).

Hope this helps.

How would you make two <div>s overlap?

If you want the logo to take space, you are probably better of floating it left and then moving down the content using margin, sort of like this:

#logo {
    float: left;
    margin: 0 10px 10px 20px;
}

#content {
    margin: 10px 0 0 10px;
}

or whatever margin you want.

check if a number already exist in a list in python

You could probably use a set object instead. Just add numbers to the set. They inherently do not replicate.

How do I convert between ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8 in Java?

Which worked for me: ("üzüm baglari" is the correct written in Turkish)

Convert ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8:

String decodedToUTF8 = new String(encodedWithISO88591.getBytes("ISO-8859-1"), "UTF-8");
//Result, decodedToUTF8 --> "üzüm baglari"

Convert UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1

String encodedWithUTF8 = "üzüm baglari";
String decodedToISO88591 = new String(encodedWithUTF8.getBytes("UTF-8"), "ISO-8859-1");
//Result, decodedToISO88591 --> "üzüm baÄları"

What does the shrink-to-fit viewport meta attribute do?

As stats on iOS usage, indicating that iOS 9.0-9.2.x usage is currently at 0.17%. If these numbers are truly indicative of global use of these versions, then it’s even more likely to be safe to remove shrink-to-fit from your viewport meta tag.

After 9.2.x. IOS remove this tag check on its' browser.

How to increase MaximumErrorCount in SQL Server 2008 Jobs or Packages?

If I have open a package in BIDS ("Business Intelligence Development Studio", the tool you use to design the packages), and do not select any item in it, I have a "Properties" pane in the bottom right containing - among others, the MaximumErrorCount property. If you do not see it, maybe it is minimized and you have to open it (have a look at tabs in the right).

If you cannot find it this way, try the menu: View/Properties Window.

Or try the F4 key.

Spring MVC Controller redirect using URL parameters instead of in response

http://jira.springframework.org/browse/SPR-6464 provided me with what I needed to get things working until Spring MVC offers the functionality (potentially in the 3.0.2 release). Although I simply implemented the classes they have temporarily and added the filter to my web application context. Works great!

What does -Xmn jvm option stands for

-Xmn : the size of the heap for the young generation Young generation represents all the objects which have a short life of time. Young generation objects are in a specific location into the heap, where the garbage collector will pass often. All new objects are created into the young generation region (called "eden"). When an object survive is still "alive" after more than 2-3 gc cleaning, then it will be swap has an "old generation" : they are "survivor" .

When should the xlsm or xlsb formats be used?

They're all similar in that they're essentially zip files containing the actual file components. You can see the contents just by replacing the extension with .zip and opening them up. The difference with xlsb seems to be that the components are not XML-based but are in a binary format: supposedly this is beneficial when working with large files.

Create an enum with string values

//to access the enum with its string value you can convert it to object

How to remove multiple indexes from a list at the same time?

Old question, but I have an answer.

First, peruse the elements of the list like so:

for x in range(len(yourlist)):
    print '%s: %s' % (x, yourlist[x])

Then, call this function with a list of the indexes of elements you want to pop. It's robust enough that the order of the list doesn't matter.

def multipop(yourlist, itemstopop):
    result = []
    itemstopop.sort()
    itemstopop = itemstopop[::-1]
    for x in itemstopop:
        result.append(yourlist.pop(x))
    return result

As a bonus, result should only contain elements you wanted to remove.

In [73]: mylist = ['a','b','c','d','charles']

In [76]: for x in range(len(mylist)):

      mylist[x])

....:

0: a

1: b

2: c

3: d

4: charles

...

In [77]: multipop(mylist, [0, 2, 4])

Out[77]: ['charles', 'c', 'a']

...

In [78]: mylist

Out[78]: ['b', 'd']

How to get the previous URL in JavaScript?

If you want to go to the previous page without knowing the url, you could use the new History api.

history.back(); //Go to the previous page
history.forward(); //Go to the next page in the stack
history.go(index); //Where index could be 1, -1, 56, etc.

But you can't manipulate the content of the history stack on browser that doesn't support the HTML5 History API

Android - Activity vs FragmentActivity?

If you use the Eclipse "New Android Project" wizard in a recent ADT bundle, you'll automatically get tabs implemented as a Fragments. This makes the conversion of your application to the tablet format much easier in the future.

For simple single screen layouts you may still use Activity.

Reading JSON POST using PHP

Hello this is a snippet from an old project of mine that uses curl to get ip information from some free ip databases services which reply in json format. I think it might help you.

$ip_srv = array("http://freegeoip.net/json/$this->ip","http://smart-ip.net/geoip-json/$this->ip");

getUserLocation($ip_srv);

Function:

function getUserLocation($services) {

        $ctx = stream_context_create(array('http' => array('timeout' => 15))); // 15 seconds timeout

        for ($i = 0; $i < count($services); $i++) {

            // Configuring curl options
            $options = array (
                CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER => true, // return web page
                //CURLOPT_HEADER => false, // don't return headers
                CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER => array('Content-type: application/json'),
                CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION => true, // follow redirects
                CURLOPT_ENCODING => "", // handle compressed
                CURLOPT_USERAGENT => "test", // who am i

                CURLOPT_MAXREDIRS => 10 // stop after 10 redirects
            );

            // Initializing curl
            $ch = curl_init($services[$i]);
            curl_setopt_array ( $ch, $options );

            $header = curl_getinfo ( $ch );
            $httpCode = curl_getinfo ( $ch, CURLINFO_HTTP_CODE );

Appending an element to the end of a list in Scala

This is similar to one of the answers but in different way :

scala> val x = List(1,2,3)
x: List[Int] = List(1, 2, 3)

scala> val y = x ::: 4 :: Nil
y: List[Int] = List(1, 2, 3, 4)

Oracle - Best SELECT statement for getting the difference in minutes between two DateTime columns?

By default, oracle date subtraction returns a result in # of days.

So just multiply by 24 to get # of hours, and again by 60 for # of minutes.

Example:

select
  round((second_date - first_date) * (60 * 24),2) as time_in_minutes
from
  (
  select
    to_date('01/01/2008 01:30:00 PM','mm/dd/yyyy hh:mi:ss am') as first_date
   ,to_date('01/06/2008 01:35:00 PM','mm/dd/yyyy HH:MI:SS AM') as second_date
  from
    dual

Xcode 9 Swift Language Version (SWIFT_VERSION)

maybe you need to download toolchain. This error occurs when you don't have right version of swift compiler.

How to generate a Makefile with source in sub-directories using just one makefile

The reason is that your rule

%.o: %.cpp
       ...

expects the .cpp file to reside in the same directory as the .o your building. Since test.exe in your case depends on build/widgets/apple.o (etc), make is expecting apple.cpp to be build/widgets/apple.cpp.

You can use VPATH to resolve this:

VPATH = src/widgets

BUILDDIR = build/widgets

$(BUILDDIR)/%.o: %.cpp
      ...

When attempting to build "build/widgets/apple.o", make will search for apple.cpp in VPATH. Note that the build rule has to use special variables in order to access the actual filename make finds:

$(BUILDDIR)/%.o: %.cpp
        $(CC) $< -o $@

Where "$<" expands to the path where make located the first dependency.

Also note that this will build all the .o files in build/widgets. If you want to build the binaries in different directories, you can do something like

build/widgets/%.o: %.cpp
        ....

build/ui/%.o: %.cpp
        ....

build/tests/%.o: %.cpp
        ....

I would recommend that you use "canned command sequences" in order to avoid repeating the actual compiler build rule:

define cc-command
$(CC) $(CFLAGS) $< -o $@
endef

You can then have multiple rules like this:

build1/foo.o build1/bar.o: %.o: %.cpp
    $(cc-command)

build2/frotz.o build2/fie.o: %.o: %.cpp
    $(cc-command)

What is an alternative to execfile in Python 3?

While exec(open("filename").read()) is often given as an alternative to execfile("filename"), it misses important details that execfile supported.

The following function for Python3.x is as close as I could get to having the same behavior as executing a file directly. That matches running python /path/to/somefile.py.

def execfile(filepath, globals=None, locals=None):
    if globals is None:
        globals = {}
    globals.update({
        "__file__": filepath,
        "__name__": "__main__",
    })
    with open(filepath, 'rb') as file:
        exec(compile(file.read(), filepath, 'exec'), globals, locals)

# execute the file
execfile("/path/to/somefile.py")

Notes:

  • Uses binary reading to avoid encoding issues
  • Guaranteed to close the file (Python3.x warns about this)
  • Defines __main__, some scripts depend on this to check if they are loading as a module or not for eg. if __name__ == "__main__"
  • Setting __file__ is nicer for exception messages and some scripts use __file__ to get the paths of other files relative to them.
  • Takes optional globals & locals arguments, modifying them in-place as execfile does - so you can access any variables defined by reading back the variables after running.

  • Unlike Python2's execfile this does not modify the current namespace by default. For that you have to explicitly pass in globals() & locals().

How do I fit an image (img) inside a div and keep the aspect ratio?

For me, the following CSS worked (tested in Chrome, Firefox and Safari).

There are multiple things working together:

  • max-height: 100%;, max-width: 100%; and height: auto;, width: auto; make the img scale to whichever dimension first reaches 100% while keeping the aspect ratio
  • position: relative; in the container and position: absolute; in the child together with top: 50%; and left: 50%; center the top left corner of the img in the container
  • transform: translate(-50%, -50%); moves the img back to the left and top by half its size, thus centering the img in the container

CSS:

.container {
    height: 48px;
    width: 48px;

    position: relative;
}

.container > img {
    max-height: 100%;
    max-width: 100%;
    height: auto;
    width: auto;

    position: absolute;
    top: 50%;
    left: 50%;

    transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
}

How to create NSIndexPath for TableView

For Swift 3 it's now: IndexPath(row: rowIndex, section: sectionIndex)

When should you use constexpr capability in C++11?

constexpr functions are really nice and a great addition to c++. However, you are right in that most of the problems it solves can be inelegantly worked around with macros.

However, one of the uses of constexpr has no C++03 equivalent, typed constants.

// This is bad for obvious reasons.
#define ONE 1;

// This works most of the time but isn't fully typed.
enum { TWO = 2 };

// This doesn't compile
enum { pi = 3.1415f };

// This is a file local lvalue masquerading as a global
// rvalue. It works most of the time. But May subtly break
// with static initialization order issues, eg pi = 0 for some files.
static const float pi = 3.1415f;

// This is a true constant rvalue
constexpr float pi = 3.1415f;

// Haven't you always wanted to do this?
// constexpr std::string awesome = "oh yeah!!!";
// UPDATE: sadly std::string lacks a constexpr ctor

struct A
{
   static const int four = 4;
   static const int five = 5;
   constexpr int six = 6;
};

int main()
{
   &A::four; // linker error
   &A::six; // compiler error

   // EXTREMELY subtle linker error
   int i = rand()? A::four: A::five;
   // It not safe use static const class variables with the ternary operator!
}

//Adding this to any cpp file would fix the linker error.
//int A::four;
//int A::six;

What's the best way to parse a JSON response from the requests library?

You can use json.loads:

import json
import requests

response = requests.get(...)
json_data = json.loads(response.text)

This converts a given string into a dictionary which allows you to access your JSON data easily within your code.

Or you can use @Martijn's helpful suggestion, and the higher voted answer, response.json().

How to identify which columns are not "NA" per row in a matrix?

Try:

which( !is.na(p), arr.ind=TRUE)

Which I think is just as informative and probably more useful than the output you specified, But if you really wanted the list version, then this could be used:

> apply(p, 1, function(x) which(!is.na(x)) )
[[1]]
[1] 2 3

[[2]]
[1] 4 7

[[3]]
integer(0)

[[4]]
[1] 5

[[5]]
integer(0)

Or even with smushing together with paste:

lapply(apply(p, 1, function(x) which(!is.na(x)) ) , paste, collapse=", ")

The output from which function the suggested method delivers the row and column of non-zero (TRUE) locations of logical tests:

> which( !is.na(p), arr.ind=TRUE)
     row col
[1,]   1   2
[2,]   1   3
[3,]   2   4
[4,]   4   5
[5,]   2   7

Without the arr.ind parameter set to non-default TRUE, you only get the "vector location" determined using the column major ordering the R has as its convention. R-matrices are just "folded vectors".

> which( !is.na(p) )
[1]  6 11 17 24 32

Insert content into iFrame

You really don't need jQuery for that:

var doc = document.getElementById('iframe').contentWindow.document;
doc.open();
doc.write('Test');
doc.close();

jsFiddle Demo

If you absolutely have to use jQuery, you should use contents():

var $iframe = $('#iframe');
$iframe.ready(function() {
    $iframe.contents().find("body").append('Test');
});

jsFiddle Demo

Please don't forget that if you're using jQuery, you'll need to hook into the DOMReady function as follows:

$(function() {
    var $iframe = $('#iframe');
    $iframe.ready(function() {
        $iframe.contents().find("body").append('Test');
    });
});

Username and password in https url

When you put the username and password in front of the host, this data is not sent that way to the server. It is instead transformed to a request header depending on the authentication schema used. Most of the time this is going to be Basic Auth which I describe below. A similar (but significantly less often used) authentication scheme is Digest Auth which nowadays provides comparable security features.

With Basic Auth, the HTTP request from the question will look something like this:

GET / HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
Authorization: Basic Zm9vOnBhc3N3b3Jk

The hash like string you see there is created by the browser like this: base64_encode(username + ":" + password).

To outsiders of the HTTPS transfer, this information is hidden (as everything else on the HTTP level). You should take care of logging on the client and all intermediate servers though. The username will normally be shown in server logs, but the password won't. This is not guaranteed though. When you call that URL on the client with e.g. curl, the username and password will be clearly visible on the process list and might turn up in the bash history file.

When you send passwords in a GET request as e.g. http://example.com/login.php?username=me&password=secure the username and password will always turn up in server logs of your webserver, application server, caches, ... unless you specifically configure your servers to not log it. This only applies to servers being able to read the unencrypted http data, like your application server or any middleboxes such as loadbalancers, CDNs, proxies, etc. though.

Basic auth is standardized and implemented by browsers by showing this little username/password popup you might have seen already. When you put the username/password into an HTML form sent via GET or POST, you have to implement all the login/logout logic yourself (which might be an advantage and allows you to more control over the login/logout flow for the added "cost" of having to implement this securely again). But you should never transfer usernames and passwords by GET parameters. If you have to, use POST instead. The prevents the logging of this data by default.

When implementing an authentication mechanism with a user/password entry form and a subsequent cookie-based session as it is commonly used today, you have to make sure that the password is either transported with POST requests or one of the standardized authentication schemes above only.

Concluding I could say, that transfering data that way over HTTPS is likely safe, as long as you take care that the password does not turn up in unexpected places. But that advice applies to every transfer of any password in any way.

How to match "anything up until this sequence of characters" in a regular expression?

This will make sense about regex.

  1. The exact word can be get from the following regex command:

("(.*?)")/g

Here, we can get the exact word globally which is belonging inside the double quotes. For Example, If our search text is,

This is the example for "double quoted" words

then we will get "double quoted" from that sentence.

Get loop count inside a Python FOR loop

Using zip function we can get both element and index.

countries = ['Pakistan','India','China','Russia','USA']

for index, element zip(range(0,countries),countries):

         print('Index : ',index)
         print(' Element : ', element,'\n')

output : Index : 0 Element : Pakistan ...

Getting a 'source: not found' error when using source in a bash script

If you're writing a bash script, call it by name:

#!/bin/bash

/bin/sh is not guaranteed to be bash. This caused a ton of broken scripts in Ubuntu some years ago (IIRC).

The source builtin works just fine in bash; but you might as well just use dot like Norman suggested.

Checking for empty queryset in Django

If you have a huge number of objects, this can (at times) be much faster:

try:
    orgs[0]
    # If you get here, it exists...
except IndexError:
    # Doesn't exist!

On a project I'm working on with a huge database, not orgs is 400+ ms and orgs.count() is 250ms. In my most common use cases (those where there are results), this technique often gets that down to under 20ms. (One case I found, it was 6.)

Could be much longer, of course, depending on how far the database has to look to find a result. Or even faster, if it finds one quickly; YMMV.

EDIT: This will often be slower than orgs.count() if the result isn't found, particularly if the condition you're filtering on is a rare one; as a result, it's particularly useful in view functions where you need to make sure the view exists or throw Http404. (Where, one would hope, people are asking for URLs that exist more often than not.)

How can I pass a parameter to a setTimeout() callback?

After doing some research and testing, the only correct implementation is:

setTimeout(yourFunctionReference, 4000, param1, param2, paramN);

setTimeout will pass all extra parameters to your function so they can be processed there.

The anonymous function can work for very basic stuff, but within instance of a object where you have to use "this", there is no way to make it work. Any anonymous function will change "this" to point to window, so you will lose your object reference.

Format date to MM/dd/yyyy in JavaScript

ISO compliant dateString

If your dateString is RFC282 and ISO8601 compliant:
pass your string into the Date Constructor:

const dateString = "2020-10-30T12:52:27+05:30"; // ISO8601 compliant dateString
const D = new Date(dateString);                 // {object Date}

from here you can extract the desired values by using Date Getters:

D.getMonth() + 1  // 10 (PS: +1 since Month is 0-based)
D.getDate()       // 30
D.getFullYear()   // 2020

Non-standard date string

If you use a non standard date string:
destructure the string into known parts, and than pass the variables to the Date Constructor:

new Date(year, monthIndex [, day [, hours [, minutes [, seconds [, milliseconds]]]]])

const dateString = "30/10/2020 12:52:27";
const [d, M, y, h, m, s] = dateString.match(/\d+/g);

// PS: M-1 since Month is 0-based
const D = new Date(y, M-1, d, h, m, s);  // {object Date}

D.getMonth() + 1  // 10 (PS: +1 since Month is 0-based)
D.getDate()       // 30
D.getFullYear()   // 2020

How to detect shake event with android?

Since SensorListener is deprecated so use the following code:

/* put this into your activity class */
private SensorManager mSensorManager;
private float mAccel; // acceleration apart from gravity
private float mAccelCurrent; // current acceleration including gravity
private float mAccelLast; // last acceleration including gravity

private final SensorEventListener mSensorListener = new SensorEventListener() {

  public void onSensorChanged(SensorEvent se) {
    float x = se.values[0];
    float y = se.values[1];
    float z = se.values[2];
    mAccelLast = mAccelCurrent;
    mAccelCurrent = (float) Math.sqrt((double) (x*x + y*y + z*z));
    float delta = mAccelCurrent - mAccelLast;
    mAccel = mAccel * 0.9f + delta; // perform low-cut filter
  }

  public void onAccuracyChanged(Sensor sensor, int accuracy) {
  }
};

@Override
protected void onResume() {
  super.onResume();
  mSensorManager.registerListener(mSensorListener, mSensorManager.getDefaultSensor(Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER), SensorManager.SENSOR_DELAY_NORMAL);
}

@Override
protected void onPause() {
  mSensorManager.unregisterListener(mSensorListener);
  super.onPause();
}

Then:

/* do this in onCreate */
mSensorManager = (SensorManager) getSystemService(Context.SENSOR_SERVICE);
mSensorManager.registerListener(mSensorListener, mSensorManager.getDefaultSensor(Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER), SensorManager.SENSOR_DELAY_NORMAL);
mAccel = 0.00f;
mAccelCurrent = SensorManager.GRAVITY_EARTH;
mAccelLast = SensorManager.GRAVITY_EARTH;

Recommended website resolution (width and height)?

Try to target 1024 as the minimum width. Try how it looks at 800, but don't bother too much making that work. At 800x600 almost none of the major websites are going to work, so people working at that resolution are going to have problems all the time anyway.

If you're going to go for a liquid layout, make sure that text doesn't get too wide, because when lines are too long, they become hard to read. That's the main reason why most websites have a fixed width.

CORS - How do 'preflight' an httprequest?

During the preflight request, you should see the following two headers: Access-Control-Request-Method and Access-Control-Request-Headers. These request headers are asking the server for permissions to make the actual request. Your preflight response needs to acknowledge these headers in order for the actual request to work.

For example, suppose the browser makes a request with the following headers:

Origin: http://yourdomain.com
Access-Control-Request-Method: POST
Access-Control-Request-Headers: X-Custom-Header

Your server should then respond with the following headers:

Access-Control-Allow-Origin: http://yourdomain.com
Access-Control-Allow-Methods: GET, POST
Access-Control-Allow-Headers: X-Custom-Header

Pay special attention to the Access-Control-Allow-Headers response header. The value of this header should be the same headers in the Access-Control-Request-Headers request header, and it can not be '*'.

Once you send this response to the preflight request, the browser will make the actual request. You can learn more about CORS here: http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/cors/

How to know/change current directory in Python shell?

Changing the current directory is not the way to deal with finding modules in Python.

Rather, see the docs for The Module Search Path for how Python finds which module to import.

Here is a relevant bit from Standard Modules section:

The variable sys.path is a list of strings that determines the interpreter’s search path for modules. It is initialized to a default path taken from the environment variable PYTHONPATH, or from a built-in default if PYTHONPATH is not set. You can modify it using standard list operations:

>>> import sys
>>> sys.path.append('/ufs/guido/lib/python')

In answer your original question about getting and setting the current directory:

>>> help(os.getcwd)

getcwd(...)
    getcwd() -> path

    Return a string representing the current working directory.

>>> help(os.chdir)

chdir(...)
    chdir(path)

    Change the current working directory to the specified path.

Artisan, creating tables in database

Difference between abstraction and encapsulation?

Encapsulation means-hiding data like using getter and setter etc.

Abstraction means- hiding implementation using abstract class and interfaces etc.

Reading text files using read.table

From ?read.table: The number of data columns is determined by looking at the first five lines of input (or the whole file if it has less than five lines), or from the length of col.names if it is specified and is longer. This could conceivably be wrong if fill or blank.lines.skip are true, so specify col.names if necessary.

So, perhaps your data file isn't clean. Being more specific will help the data import:

d = read.table("foobar.txt",
               sep="\t",
               col.names=c("id", "name"),
               fill=FALSE,
               strip.white=TRUE)

will specify exact columns and fill=FALSE will force a two column data frame.

POST unchecked HTML checkboxes

you don't need to create a hidden field for all checkboxes just copy my code. it will change the value of checkbox if not checked the value will assign 0 and if checkbox checked then assign value into 1

$("form").submit(function () {

    var this_master = $(this);

    this_master.find('input[type="checkbox"]').each( function () {
        var checkbox_this = $(this);

        if( checkbox_this.is(":checked") == true ) {
            checkbox_this.attr('value','1');
        } else {
            checkbox_this.prop('checked',true);
            //DONT' ITS JUST CHECK THE CHECKBOX TO SUBMIT FORM DATA
            checkbox_this.attr('value','0');
        }
    })
})

The default for KeyValuePair

You can create a general (and generic) extension method, like this one:

public static class Extensions
{
    public static bool IsDefault<T>(this T value) where T : struct
    {
        bool isDefault = value.Equals(default(T));

        return isDefault;
    }
}

Usage:

// We have to set explicit default value '0' to avoid build error:
// Use of unassigned local variable 'intValue'
int intValue = 0;
long longValue = 12;
KeyValuePair<String, int> kvp1 = new KeyValuePair<String, int>("string", 11);
KeyValuePair<String, int> kvp2 = new KeyValuePair<String, int>();
List<KeyValuePair<String, int>> kvps = new List<KeyValuePair<String, int>> { kvp1, kvp2 };
KeyValuePair<String, int> kvp3 = kvps.FirstOrDefault(kvp => kvp.Value == 11);
KeyValuePair<String, int> kvp4 = kvps.FirstOrDefault(kvp => kvp.Value == 15);

Console.WriteLine(intValue.IsDefault()); // results 'True'
Console.WriteLine(longValue.IsDefault()); // results 'False'
Console.WriteLine(kvp1.IsDefault()); // results 'False'
Console.WriteLine(kvp2.IsDefault()); // results 'True'
Console.WriteLine(kvp3.IsDefault()); // results 'False'
Console.WriteLine(kvp4.IsDefault()); // results 'True'

The easiest way to transform collection to array?

With JDK/11, an alternate way of converting a Collection<Foo> to an Foo[] could be to make use of Collection.toArray(IntFunction<T[]> generator) as:

Foo[] foos = fooCollection.toArray(new Foo[0]); // before JDK 11
Foo[] updatedFoos = fooCollection.toArray(Foo[]::new); // after JDK 11

As explained by @Stuart on the mailing list(emphasis mine), the performance of this should essentially be the same as that of the existing Collection.toArray(new T[0]) --

The upshot is that implementations that use Arrays.copyOf() are the fastest, probably because it's an intrinsic.

It can avoid zero-filling the freshly allocated array because it knows the entire array contents will be overwritten. This is true regardless of what the public API looks like.

The implementation of the API within the JDK reads:

default <T> T[] toArray(IntFunction<T[]> generator) {
    return toArray(generator.apply(0));
}

The default implementation calls generator.apply(0) to get a zero-length array and then simply calls toArray(T[]). This goes through the Arrays.copyOf() fast path, so it's essentially the same speed as toArray(new T[0]).

Note:- Just that the API use shall be guided along with a backward incompatibility when used for code with null values e.g. toArray(null) since these calls would now be ambiguous because of existing toArray(T[] a) and would fail to compile.

How to completely hide the navigation bar in iPhone / HTML5

Remy Sharp has a good description of the process in his article "Doing it right: skipping the iPhone url bar":

Making the iPhone hide the url bar is fairly simple, you need run the following JavaScript:

window.scrollTo(0, 1);

However there's the question of when? You have to do this once the height is correct so that the iPhone can scroll to the first pixel of the document, otherwise it will try, then the height will load forcing the url bar back in to view.

You could wait until the images have loaded and the window.onload event fires, but this doesn't always work, if everything is cached, the event fires too early and the scrollTo never has a chance to jump. Here's an example using window.onload: http://jsbin.com/edifu4/4/

I personally use a timer for 1 second - which is enough time on a mobile device while you wait to render, but long enough that it doesn't fire too early:

setTimeout(function () {   window.scrollTo(0, 1); }, 1000);

However, you only want this to setup if it's an iPhone (or just mobile) browser, so a sneaky sniff (I don't generally encourage this, but I'm comfortable with this to prevent "normal" desktop browsers from jumping one pixel):

/mobile/i.test(navigator.userAgent) && setTimeout(function
() {   window.scrollTo(0, 1); }, 1000);

The very last part of this, and this is the part that seems to be missing from some examples I've seen around the web is this: if the user specifically linked to a url fragment, i.e. the url has a hash on it, you don't want to jump. So if I navigate to http://full-frontal.org/tickets#dayconf - I want the browser to scroll naturally to the element whose id is dayconf, and not jump to the top using scrollTo(0, 1):

/mobile/i.test(navigator.userAgent) && !location.hash &&
setTimeout(function () {   window.scrollTo(0, 1); }, 1000);?

Try this out on an iPhone (or simulator) http://jsbin.com/edifu4/10 and you'll see it will only scroll when you've landed on the page without a url fragment.

indexOf and lastIndexOf in PHP?

<?php
// sample array
$fruits3 = [
    "iron",
    1,
    "ascorbic",
    "potassium",
    "ascorbic",
    2,
    "2",
    "1",
];

// Let's say we are looking for the item "ascorbic", in the above array

//a PHP function matching indexOf() from JS
echo(array_search("ascorbic", $fruits3, true)); //returns "2"

// a PHP function matching lastIndexOf() from JS world
function lastIndexOf($needle, $arr)
{
    return array_search($needle, array_reverse($arr, true), true);
}

echo(lastIndexOf("ascorbic", $fruits3)); //returns "4"

// so these (above) are the two ways to run a function similar to indexOf and lastIndexOf()

HTML Table width in percentage, table rows separated equally

Use the property table-layout:fixed; on the table to get equally spaced cells. If a column has a width set, then no matter what the content is, it will be the specified width. Columns without a width set will divide whatever room is left over among themselves.

<table style='table-layout:fixed;'>
    <tbody>
        <tr>
            <td>gobble de gook</td>
            <td>mibs</td>
        </tr>
    </tbody>
</table>

Just to throw it out there, you could also use <colgroup><col span='#' style='width:#%;'/></colgroup>, which doesn't require repetition of style per table data or giving the table an id to use in a style sheet. I think setting the widths on the first row is enough though.

Spring: Returning empty HTTP Responses with ResponseEntity<Void> doesn't work

Personally, to deal with empty responses, I use in my Integration Tests the MockMvcResponse object like this :

MockMvcResponse response = RestAssuredMockMvc.given()
                .webAppContextSetup(webApplicationContext)
                .when()
                .get("/v1/ticket");

    assertThat(response.mockHttpServletResponse().getStatus()).isEqualTo(HttpStatus.NO_CONTENT.value());

and in my controller I return empty response in a specific case like this :

return ResponseEntity.noContent().build();

Git push/clone to new server

There are many ways to move repositories around, git bundle is a nice way if you have insufficient network availability. Since a Git repository is really just a directory full of files, you can "clone" a repository by making a copy of the .git directory in whatever way suits you best.

The most efficient way is to use an external repository somewhere (use GitHub or set up Gitosis), and then git push.

nginx 502 bad gateway

The 502 error appears because nginx cannot hand off to php5-cgi. You can try reconfiguring php5-cgi to use unix sockets as opposed to tcp .. then adjust the server config to point to the socket instead of the tcp ...

ps auxww | grep php5-cgi #-- is the process running?
netstat -an | grep 9000 # is the port open?

Ignore self-signed ssl cert using Jersey Client

After some searching and trawling through some old stackoverflow questions I've found a solution in a previously asked SO question:

Here's the code that I ended up using.

// Create a trust manager that does not validate certificate chains
TrustManager[] trustAllCerts = new TrustManager[]{new X509TrustManager(){
    public X509Certificate[] getAcceptedIssuers(){return null;}
    public void checkClientTrusted(X509Certificate[] certs, String authType){}
    public void checkServerTrusted(X509Certificate[] certs, String authType){}
}};

// Install the all-trusting trust manager
try {
    SSLContext sc = SSLContext.getInstance("TLS");
    sc.init(null, trustAllCerts, new SecureRandom());
    HttpsURLConnection.setDefaultSSLSocketFactory(sc.getSocketFactory());
} catch (Exception e) {
    ;
}

Java ByteBuffer to String

EDIT (2018): The edited sibling answer by @xinyongCheng is a simpler approach, and should be the accepted answer.

Your approach would be reasonable if you knew the bytes are in the platform's default charset. In your example, this is true because k.getBytes() returns the bytes in the platform's default charset.

More frequently, you'll want to specify the encoding. However, there's a simpler way to do that than the question you linked. The String API provides methods that converts between a String and a byte[] array in a particular encoding. These methods suggest using CharsetEncoder/CharsetDecoder "when more control over the decoding [encoding] process is required."

To get the bytes from a String in a particular encoding, you can use a sibling getBytes() method:

byte[] bytes = k.getBytes( StandardCharsets.UTF_8 );

To put bytes with a particular encoding into a String, you can use a different String constructor:

String v = new String( bytes, StandardCharsets.UTF_8 );

Note that ByteBuffer.array() is an optional operation. If you've constructed your ByteBuffer with an array, you can use that array directly. Otherwise, if you want to be safe, use ByteBuffer.get(byte[] dst, int offset, int length) to get bytes from the buffer into a byte array.

How can I trim leading and trailing white space?

Probably the best way is to handle the trailing white spaces when you read your data file. If you use read.csv or read.table you can set the parameterstrip.white=TRUE.

If you want to clean strings afterwards you could use one of these functions:

# Returns string without leading white space
trim.leading <- function (x)  sub("^\\s+", "", x)

# Returns string without trailing white space
trim.trailing <- function (x) sub("\\s+$", "", x)

# Returns string without leading or trailing white space
trim <- function (x) gsub("^\\s+|\\s+$", "", x)

To use one of these functions on myDummy$country:

 myDummy$country <- trim(myDummy$country)

To 'show' the white space you could use:

 paste(myDummy$country)

which will show you the strings surrounded by quotation marks (") making white spaces easier to spot.

How to append binary data to a buffer in node.js

Updated Answer for Node.js ~>0.8

Node is able to concatenate buffers on its own now.

var newBuffer = Buffer.concat([buffer1, buffer2]);

Old Answer for Node.js ~0.6

I use a module to add a .concat function, among others:

https://github.com/coolaj86/node-bufferjs

I know it isn't a "pure" solution, but it works very well for my purposes.

Do something if screen width is less than 960 px

I would suggest (jQuery needed) :

/*
 * windowSize
 * call this function to get windowSize any time
 */
function windowSize() {
  windowHeight = window.innerHeight ? window.innerHeight : $(window).height();
  windowWidth = window.innerWidth ? window.innerWidth : $(window).width();

}

//Init Function of init it wherever you like...
windowSize();

// For example, get window size on window resize
$(window).resize(function() {
  windowSize();
  console.log('width is :', windowWidth, 'Height is :', windowHeight);
  if (windowWidth < 768) {
    console.log('width is under 768px !');
  }
});

Added in CodePen : http://codepen.io/moabi/pen/QNRqpY?editors=0011

Then you can get easily window's width with the var : windowWidth and Height with : windowHeight

otherwise, get a js library : http://wicky.nillia.ms/enquire.js/

jQuery - Detect value change on hidden input field

This example returns the draft field value every time the hidden draft field changes its value (chrome browser):

var h = document.querySelectorAll('input[type="hidden"][name="draft"]')[0];
//or jquery.....
//var h = $('input[type="hidden"][name="draft"]')[0];

observeDOM(h, 'n', function(draftValue){
  console.log('dom changed draftValue:'+draftValue);
});

var observeDOM = (function(){
var MutationObserver = window.MutationObserver ||
window.WebKitMutationObserver;

  return function(obj, thistime, callback){
    if(typeof obj === 'undefined'){
      console.log('obj is undefined');
      return;
    }

    if( MutationObserver ){

        // define a new observer
        var obs = new MutationObserver(function(mutations, observer){

            if( mutations[0].addedNodes.length || mutations[0].removedNodes.length ){

               callback('pass other observations back...');

            }else if(mutations[0].attributeName == "value" ){

               // use callback to pass back value of hidden form field
               callback( obj.value );

            }

        });

        // have the observer observe obj for changes in children
        // note 'attributes:true' else we can't read the input attribute value
        obs.observe( obj, { childList:true, subtree:true, attributes:true  });

Position DIV relative to another DIV?

You need to set postion:relative of outer DIV and position:absolute of inner div.
Try this. Here is the Demo

    height: 30px;
    position: absolute;
    width: 100px;
    top:10px;

Capture Signature using HTML5 and iPad

Perhaps the best two browser techs for this are Canvas, with Flash as a back up.

We tried VML on IE as backup for Canvas, but it was much slower than Flash. SVG was slower then all the rest.

With jSignature ( http://willowsystems.github.com/jSignature/ ) we used Canvas as primary, with fallback to Flash-based Canvas emulator (FlashCanvas) for IE8 and less. Id' say worked very well for us.

How to clear Flutter's Build cache?

I was facing the same issue and i found out that I was having two terminals in visual studio code, On first terminal it was already running my flutter project and on the other terminal I was running different solutions shared in this thread. Due to this reason no solution was working for me. So there are two ways you can solve this problem. 1- Restart visual studio code (it will automatically close the terminals) 2- Stop the terminal in which flutter project is already running and then run flutter clean command.

Declaring an unsigned int in Java

For unsigned numbers you can use these classes from Guava library:

They support various operations:

  • plus
  • minus
  • times
  • mod
  • dividedBy

The thing that seems missing at the moment are byte shift operators. If you need those you can use BigInteger from Java.

How to prevent form from submitting multiple times from client side?

I tried vanstee's solution along with asp mvc 3 unobtrusive validation, and if client validation fails, code is still run, and form submit is disabled for good. I'm not able to resubmit after correcting fields. (see bjan's comment)

So I modified vanstee's script like this:

$("form").submit(function () {
    if ($(this).valid()) {
        $(this).submit(function () {
            return false;
        });
        return true;
    }
    else {
        return false;
    }
});

Passing string to a function in C - with or without pointers?

The accepted convention of passing C-strings to functions is to use a pointer:

void function(char* name)

When the function modifies the string you should also pass in the length:

void function(char* name, size_t name_length)

Your first example:

char *functionname(char *string name[256])

passes an array of pointers to strings which is not what you need at all.

Your second example:

char functionname(char string[256])

passes an array of chars. The size of the array here doesn't matter and the parameter will decay to a pointer anyway, so this is equivalent to:

char functionname(char *string)

See also this question for more details on array arguments in C.

What does the 'static' keyword do in a class?

It means that there is only one instance of "clock" in Hello, not one per each separate instance of the "Hello" class, or more-so, it means that there will be one commonly shared "clock" reference among all instances of the "Hello" class.

So if you were to do a "new Hello" anywhere in your code: A- in the first scenario (before the change, without using "static"), it would make a new clock every time a "new Hello" is called, but B- in the second scenario (after the change, using "static"), every "new Hello" instance would still share and use the initial and same "clock" reference first created.

Unless you needed "clock" somewhere outside of main, this would work just as well:

package hello;
public class Hello
{
    public static void main(String args[])
    {
      Clock clock=new Clock();
      clock.sayTime();
    }
}

Ruby sleep or delay less than a second?

sleep(1.0/24.0)

As to your follow up question if that's the best way: No, you could get not-so-smooth framerates because the rendering of each frame might not take the same amount of time.

You could try one of these solutions:

  • Use a timer which fires 24 times a second with the drawing code.
  • Create as many frames as possible, create the motion based on the time passed, not per frame.

Scroll Automatically to the Bottom of the Page

Sometimes the page extends on scroll to buttom (for example in social networks), to scroll down to the end (ultimate buttom of the page) I use this script:

var scrollInterval = setInterval(function() {
    document.documentElement.scrollTop = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
}, 50);

And if you are in browser's javascript console, it might be useful to be able to stop the scrolling, so add:

var stopScroll = function() { clearInterval(scrollInterval); };

And then use stopScroll();.

If you need to scroll to particular element, use:

var element = document.querySelector(".element-selector");
element.scrollIntoView();

Or universal script for autoscrolling to specific element (or stop page scrolling interval):

var notChangedStepsCount = 0;
var scrollInterval = setInterval(function() {
    var element = document.querySelector(".element-selector");
    if (element) {
        // element found
        clearInterval(scrollInterval);
        element.scrollIntoView();
    } else if((document.documentElement.scrollTop + window.innerHeight) != document.documentElement.scrollHeight) {
        // no element -> scrolling
        notChangedStepsCount = 0;
        document.documentElement.scrollTop = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
    } else if (notChangedStepsCount > 20) {
        // no more space to scroll
        clearInterval(scrollInterval);
    } else {
        // waiting for possible extension (autoload) of the page
        notChangedStepsCount++;
    }
}, 50);

Simply saying, Java context means Java native methods all together.

In next Java code two lines of code needs context: // (1) and // (2)

import java.io.*;

public class Runner{
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException { // (1)
        File file = new File("D:/text.txt");
        String text = "";
        BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file));
        String line;
        while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null){ // (2)
            text += line;
        }
        System.out.println(text);
    }
}

(1) needs context because is invoked by Java native method private native void java.lang.Thread.start0();

(2) reader.readLine() needs context because invokes Java native method public static native void java.lang.System.arraycopy(Object src, int srcPos, Object dest, int destPos, int length);

PS.

That is what BalusC is sayed about pattern Facade more strictly.

Filter dataframe rows if value in column is in a set list of values

Use the isin method:

Installing SetupTools on 64-bit Windows

Problem: you have 64-bit Python, and a 32-bit installer. This will cause problems for extension modules.

The reasons why the installer doesn't finds Python is the transparent 32-bit emulation from Windows 7. 64-bit and 32-bit programs will write to different parts of the Windows registry.

64-bit: HKLM|HKCU\SOFTWARE\

32-bit: HKLM|HKCU\SOFTWARE\wow6432node\.

This means that the 64-bit Python installer writes to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Python, but the 32-bit setuptools installer looks at HKLM\SOFTWARE\wow6432node\Python (this is handled by windows automatically, programs don't notice). This is expected behavior and not a bug.

Usually, you have these choices:

  • the "clean" way: use 32-bit Python if you have to use 32-bit modules or extensions
  • the other "clean" way: only use 64-bit installers when using 64-bit Python (see below)
  • what the answer above suggests: copy HKLM\SOFTWARE\Python to HKLM\SOFTWARE\wow6432node\Python, but this will cause problems with binary distributions, as 64-bit Python can't load 32-bit compiled modules (do NOT do this!)
  • install pure Python modules with setuptools instead of the distutils installer (easy_install or pip)

For setuptools itself, for example, you can't use a 32-bit installer for 64-bit Python as it includes binary files. But there's a 64-bit installer at http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/ (has many installers for other modules too). Nowadays, many packages on PyPi have binary distributions, so you can install them via pip.
