Programs & Examples On #Favicon

Favicon is an icon associated with particular website. It is often displayed in a web browser in address field (usually left to the URL), on tab bar, or in bookmarks.

Why does my favicon not show up?

Try adding the profile attribute to your head tag and use "image/x-icon" for the type attribute:

<head profile="http://www.w3.org/2005/10/profile">
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="img/favicon.ico">

If the above code doesn't work, try using the full icon path for the href attribute:

<head profile="http://www.w3.org/2005/10/profile">
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="http://example.com/img/favicon.ico">

How to set custom favicon in Express?

You must install middleware to serve the favicon.

I tried this just now:

app.use(express.favicon(path.join(__dirname, 'public','images','favicon.ico')));

and got this error message back:

Error: Most middleware (like favicon) is no longer bundled with Express and must be installed separately. Please see https://github.com/senchalabs/connect#middleware.

I think we can take that as being definitive.

Adding a favicon to a static HTML page

Convert your image file to Base64 string with a tool like this and then replace the YourBase64StringHere placeholder in the below snippet with your string and put the line in your HTML head section:

<link href="data:image/x-icon;base64,YourBase64StringHere" rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" />

This will work 100% in browsers.

Favicon dimensions?

Short answer

The favicon is supposed to be a set of 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 pictures in ICO format. ICO format is different than PNG. Non-square pictures are not supported.

To generate the favicon, for many reasons explained below, I advise you to use this favicon generator. Full disclosure: I'm the author of this site.

Long, comprehensive answer

Favicon must be square. Desktop browsers and Apple iOS do not support non-square icons.

The favicon is supported by several files:

  • A favicon.ico icon.
  • Some other PNG icons.

In order to get the best results across desktop browsers (Windows/IE, MacOS/Safari, etc.), you need to combine both types of icons.

favicon.ico

Although all desktop browsers can deal with this icon, it is primarily for older version of IE.

The ICO format is different of the PNG format. This point is tricky because some browsers are smart enough to process a PNG picture correctly, even when it was wrongly renamed with an ICO extension.

An ICO file can contain several pictures and Microsoft recommends to put 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 versions of the icon in favicon.ico. For example, IE will use the 16x16 version for the address bar, and the 32x32 for a task bar shortcut.

Declare the favicon with:

<link rel="icon" href="/path/to/icons/favicon.ico">

However, it is recommended to place favicon.ico in the root directory of the web site and to not declare it at all and let the modern browsers pick the PNG icons.

PNG icons

Modern desktop browsers (IE11, recent versions of Chrome, Firefox...) prefer to use PNG icons. The usual expected sizes are 16x16, 32x32 and "as big as possible". For example, MacOS/Safari uses the 196x196 icon if it is the biggest it can find.

What are the recommended sizes? Pick your favorite platforms:

The PNG icons are declared with:

<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/path/to/icons/favicon-16x16.png" sizes="16x16">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/path/to/icons/favicon-32x32.png" sizes="32x32">
...

Beware: Firefox does not support the sizes attribute and uses the last PNG icon it finds. Make sure to declare the 32x32 picture last: it is good enough for Firefox, and that will prevent it from downloading a big picture it does not need. edit: fixed in 2016.

Also note that Chrome does not support the sizes attribute and tends to load all declared icons. Better not declare too many icons. edit: fixed in 2018.

Mobile platforms

This question is about desktop favicon so there is no need to delve too much in this topic.

Apple defines touch icon for the iOS platform. iOS does not support non-square icon. It simply rescales non-square pictures to make them square (look for the Kioskea example).

Android Chrome relies on the Apple touch icon and also defines a 192x192 PNG icon.

Microsoft defines the tile picture and the browserconfig.xml file.

Conclusion

Generating a favicon that works everywhere is quite complex. I advise you to use this favicon generator. Full disclosure: I'm the author of this site.

HTML 5 Favicon - Support?

No, not all browsers support the sizes attribute:

Note that some platforms define specific sizes:

Add Favicon to Website

Simply put a file named favicon.ico in the webroot.

If you want to know more, please start reading:

How to add a browser tab icon (favicon) for a website?

There are actually two ways to add a favicon to a website.

<link rel="icon">

Simply add the following code to the <head> element:

<link rel="icon" href="http://example.com/favicon.png">

PNG favicons are supported by most browsers, except IE <= 10. For backwards compatibility, you can use ICO favicons.

Note that you don't have to precede icon in rel attribute with shortcut anymore. From MDN Link types:

The shortcut link type is often seen before icon, but this link type is non-conforming, ignored and web authors must not use it anymore.

favicon.ico in the root directory

From another SO answer (by @mercator):

All modern browsers (tested with Chrome 4, Firefox 3.5, IE8, Opera 10 and Safari 4) will always request a favicon.ico unless you've specified a shortcut icon via <link>.

So all you have to do is to make the /favicon.ico request to your website return your favicon. This option unfortunately doesn't allow you to use a PNG icon.

How to set-up a favicon?

With the introduction of (i|android|windows)phones, things have changed, and to get a correct and complete solution that works on any device is really time-consuming.

You can have a peek at https://realfavicongenerator.net/favicon_compatibility or http://caniuse.com/#search=favicon to get an idea on the best way to get something that works on any device.

You should have a look at http://realfavicongenerator.net/ to automate a large part of this work, and probably at https://github.com/audreyr/favicon-cheat-sheet to understand how it works (even if this latter resource hasn't been updated in a loooong time).

One complete solution requires to add to you header the following (with the corresponding pictures and files, of course) :

Does a favicon have to be 32x32 or 16x16?

May I remind everybody that the question was:

I'd like to use a single image as both a regular favicon and iPhone/iPad friendly favicon? Is this possible? Would an iPad-friendly 72x72 PNG scale if linked to as a regular browser favicon? Or do I have to use a separate 16x16 or 32x32 image?

The answer is: YES, that is possible! YES, it will be scaled. NO, you do not need a 'regular browser favicon'. Please look at this answer: https://stackoverflow.com/a/48646940/2397550

using favicon with css

You can't set a favicon from CSS - if you want to do this explicitly you have to do it in the markup as you described.

Most browsers will, however, look for a favicon.ico file on the root of the web site - so if you access http://example.com most browsers will look for http://example.com/favicon.ico automatically.

How can I get a favicon to show up in my django app?

The best solution is to override the Django base.html template. Make another base.html template under admin directory. Make an admin directory first if it does not exist. app/admin/base.html.

Add {% block extrahead %} to the overriding template.

{% extends 'admin/base.html' %}
{% load staticfiles %}
{% block javascripts %}
    {{ block.super }}
<script type="text/javascript" src="{% static 'app/js/action.js' %}"></script>

{% endblock %}

{% block extrahead %}
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="{% static 'app/img/favicon.ico'  %}" />
{% endblock %}
{% block stylesheets %}

    {{ block.super }}
{% endblock %}

Add image in title bar

You'll have to use a favicon for your page. put this in the head-tag: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.png" type="image/png">

where favicon.png is preferably a 16x16 png image.

How to prevent favicon.ico requests?

I will first say that having a favicon in a Web page is a good thing (normally).

However it is not always desired and sometime developers need a way to avoid the extra payload. For example an IFRAME would request a favicon without showing it. Worst yet, in Chrome and Android an IFRAME will generate 3 requests for favicons:

"GET /favicon.ico HTTP/1.1" 404 183
"GET /apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png HTTP/1.1" 404 197
"GET /apple-touch-icon.png HTTP/1.1" 404 189

The following uses data URI and can be used to avoid fake favicon requests:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="data:image/x-icon;," type="image/x-icon">

For references see here:

UPDATE 1:

From the comments (jpic) it looks like Firefox >= 25 doesn't like the above syntax anymore. I tested on Firefox 27 and it doesn't work while it still work on Webkit/Chrome.

So here is the new one that should cover all recent browsers. I tested Safari, Chrome and Firefox:

<link rel="icon" href="data:;base64,=">

I left out the "shortcut" name from the "rel" attribute value since that's only for older IE and versions of IE < 8 doesn't like dataURIs either. Not tested on IE8.

UPDATE 2:

If you need your document to validate against HTML5 use this instead:

<link rel="icon" href="data:;base64,iVBORw0KGgo=">

favicon.png vs favicon.ico - why should I use PNG instead of ICO?

PNG has 2 advantages: it has smaller size and it's more widely used and supported (except in case favicons). As mentioned before ICO, can have multiple size icons, which is useful for desktop applications, but not too much for websites. I would recommend you to put a favicon.ico in the root of your application. An if you have access to the Head of your website pages use the tag to point to a png file. So older browser will show the favicon.ico and newer ones the png.

To create Png and Icon files I would recommend The Gimp.

How can I get a web site's favicon?

This is a late answer, but for completeness: it is difficult to get even close to fetching 90% all favicons.

A while ago I wrote a WordPress plugin which attempts to get closer to 100%.

This is how it works:

  1. It starts by searching existing favicon repositories such as Google favicons and GetFavicons for the favicon.

  2. If none of them returns an icon, the plugin attempts to get the icon itself. This involves traversing several pages on the domain.

  3. The plugin then inspects the physical image file, because on some servers files get returned with the incorrect mime types.

The code is still not perfect because in the details you will find many weird situations: people have wrongly coded paths, e.g. img/favicon.ico where img is not in the root, duplicate headers in HTML output, different server responses from the head and body etc.

The core of the fetching part is here so you can reverse-engineer it, but be aware that validating the response should be done (checking image filetype, mime etc.).

Changing website favicon dynamically

If you have the following HTML snippet:

<link id="favicon" rel="shortcut icon" type="image/png" href="favicon.png" />

You can change the favicon using Javascript by changing the HREF element on this link, for instance (assuming you're using JQuery):

$("#favicon").attr("href","favicon2.png");

You can also create a Canvas element and set the HREF as a ToDataURL() of the canvas, much like the Favicon Defender does.

Serving favicon.ico in ASP.NET MVC

I think that favicon.ico should be in root folder. It just belongs there.

If you want to servere diferent icons - put it into controler. You can do that. If not - just leave it in the root folder.

How do I force a favicon refresh?

More than likely a web browser issue. You will have to delete your cache from your browser, close your browser and reopen it. That should fix it.

I don't believe your favicons will get refreshed on your favorites until you revisit that page, and assuming that you had previously cleared your browsers cache.

Your web browser will not go out to the internet to check for a new favicon on its own... thank goodness.

How to insert logo with the title of a HTML page?

Put this in the <head> section:

<link rel="icon" href="http://www.domain.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.domain.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

Keep the picture file named "favicon.ico". You'll have to look online to get a .ico file generator.

What is the best practice for creating a favicon on a web site?

  1. you can work with this website for generate favin.ico
  2. I recommend use .ico format because the png don't work with method 1 and ico could have more detail!
  3. both method work with all browser but when it's automatically work what you want type a code for it? so i think method 1 is better.

Necessary to add link tag for favicon.ico?

The bottom line is not all browsers will actually look for your favicon.ico file. Some browsers allow users to choose whether or not it should automatically look. Therefore, in order to ensure that it will always appear and get looked at, you do have to define it.

Favicon: .ico or .png / correct tags?

See here: Cross Browser favicon

Thats the way to go:

<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="http://www.example.com/image.png"><!-- Major Browsers -->
<!--[if IE]><link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.example.com/alternateimage.ico"/><![endif]--><!-- Internet Explorer-->

Do you have to include <link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />?

You should in fact do both, so that all browsers will find the icon.

Naming the file "favicon.ico" and putting it in the root of your website is the method "discouraged" by W3C:

Method 2 (Discouraged): Putting the favicon at a predefined URI
A second method for specifying a favicon relies on using a predefined URI to identify the image: "/favicon", which is relative to the server root. This method works because some browsers have been programmed to look for favicons using that URI.
W3C - How to add a favicon to your site

So, to cover all situations, I always do that in addition to the recommended method of adding a "rel" attribute and pointing it to the same .ico file.

Correct MIME Type for favicon.ico?

When you're serving an .ico file to be used as a favicon, it doesn't matter. All major browsers recognize both mime types correctly. So you could put:

<!-- IE -->
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="favicon.ico" />
<!-- other browsers -->
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="favicon.ico" />

or the same with image/vnd.microsoft.icon, and it will work with all browsers.

Note: There is no IANA specification for the MIME-type image/x-icon, so it does appear that it is a little more unofficial than image/vnd.microsoft.icon.

The only case in which there is a difference is if you were trying to use an .ico file in an <img> tag (which is pretty unusual). Based on previous testing, some browsers would only display .ico files as images when they were served with the MIME-type image/x-icon. More recent tests show: Chromium, Firefox and Edge are fine with both content types, IE11 is not. If you can, just avoid using ico files as images, use png.

Favicon not showing up in Google Chrome

I read a bunch of different entries till I finally found a solution that worked for my scenario (ASP.NET MVC4 project).

Instead of using the filename favicon.ico for my icon, I renamed it to something else, ie myIcon.ico. Then I just used exactly what Domi posted:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="myIcon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

And this worked!

It's not a caching issue because I tested this with Fiddler - a request for favicon never occurred, even if I cleared my cache "From the beginning of time". I believe it's just some odd bug with chrome?

How to split csv whose columns may contain ,

It is a tricky matter to parse .csv files when the .csv file could be either comma separated strings, comma separated quoted strings, or a chaotic combination of the two. The solution I came up with allows for any of the three possibilities.

I created a method, ParseCsvRow() which returns an array from a csv string. I first deal with double quotes in the string by splitting the string on double quotes into an array called quotesArray. Quoted string .csv files are only valid if there is an even number of double quotes. Double quotes in a column value should be replaced with a pair of double quotes (This is Excel's approach). As long as the .csv file meets these requirements, you can expect the delimiter commas to appear only outside of pairs of double quotes. Commas inside of pairs of double quotes are part of the column value and should be ignored when splitting the .csv into an array.

My method will test for commas outside of double quote pairs by looking only at even indexes of the quotesArray. It also removes double quotes from the start and end of column values.

    public static string[] ParseCsvRow(string csvrow)
    {
        const string obscureCharacter = "?";
        if (csvrow.Contains(obscureCharacter)) throw new Exception("Error: csv row may not contain the " + obscureCharacter + " character");

        var unicodeSeparatedString = "";

        var quotesArray = csvrow.Split('"'); // Split string on double quote character
        if (quotesArray.Length > 1)
        {
            for (var i = 0; i < quotesArray.Length; i++)
            {
                // CSV must use double quotes to represent a quote inside a quoted cell
                // Quotes must be paired up
                // Test if a comma lays outside a pair of quotes. If so, replace the comma with an obscure unicode character
                if (Math.Round(Math.Round((decimal) i/2)*2) == i)
                {
                    var s = quotesArray[i].Trim();
                    switch (s)
                    {
                        case ",":
                            quotesArray[i] = obscureCharacter; // Change quoted comma seperated string to quoted "obscure character" seperated string
                            break;
                    }
                }
                // Build string and Replace quotes where quotes were expected.
                unicodeSeparatedString += (i > 0 ? "\"" : "") + quotesArray[i].Trim();
            }
        }
        else
        {
            // String does not have any pairs of double quotes. It should be safe to just replace the commas with the obscure character
            unicodeSeparatedString = csvrow.Replace(",", obscureCharacter);
        }

        var csvRowArray = unicodeSeparatedString.Split(obscureCharacter[0]);

        for (var i = 0; i < csvRowArray.Length; i++)
        {
            var s = csvRowArray[i].Trim();
            if (s.StartsWith("\"") && s.EndsWith("\""))
            {
                csvRowArray[i] = s.Length > 2 ? s.Substring(1, s.Length - 2) : "";  // Remove start and end quotes.
            }
        }

        return csvRowArray;
    }

One downside of my approach is the way I temporarily replace delimiter commas with an obscure unicode character. This character needs to be so obscure, it would never show up in your .csv file. You may want to put more handling around this.

Note that you can also expand part of argument list:

When to use Comparable and Comparator

Comparable:
Whenever we want to store only homogeneous elements and default natural sorting order required, we can go for class implementing comparable interface.

Comparator:
Whenever we want to store homogeneous and heterogeneous elements and we want to sort in default customized sorting order, we can go for comparator interface.

How can I convert the "arguments" object to an array in JavaScript?

ES6 using rest parameters

If you are able to use ES6 you can use:

Rest Parameters

_x000D_
_x000D_
function sortArgs(...args) {_x000D_
  return args.sort(function (a, b) { return a - b; });_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
document.body.innerHTML = sortArgs(12, 4, 6, 8).toString();
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

As you can read in the link

The rest parameter syntax allows us to represent an indefinite number of arguments as an array.

If you are curious about the ... syntax, it is called Spread Operator and you can read more here.

ES6 using Array.from()

Using Array.from:

_x000D_
_x000D_
function sortArgs() {_x000D_
  return Array.from(arguments).sort(function (a, b) { return a - b; });_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
document.body.innerHTML = sortArgs(12, 4, 6, 8).toString();
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

Array.from simply convert Array-like or Iterable objects into Array instances.

ES5

You can actually just use Array's slice function on an arguments object, and it will convert it into a standard JavaScript array. You'll just have to reference it manually through Array's prototype:

function sortArgs() {
    var args = Array.prototype.slice.call(arguments);
    return args.sort();
}

Why does this work? Well, here's an excerpt from the ECMAScript 5 documentation itself:

NOTE: The slice function is intentionally generic; it does not require that its this value be an Array object. Therefore it can be transferred to other kinds of objects for use as a method. Whether the slice function can be applied successfully to a host object is implementation-dependent.

Therefore, slice works on anything that has a length property, which arguments conveniently does.

If Array.prototype.slice is too much of a mouthful for you, you can abbreviate it slightly by using array literals:

var args = [].slice.call(arguments);

However, I tend to feel that the former version is more explicit, so I'd prefer it instead. Abusing the array literal notation feels hacky and looks strange.

How to execute a MySQL command from a shell script?

I have written a shell script which will read data from properties file and then run mysql script on shell script. sharing this may help to others.

#!/bin/bash
    PROPERTY_FILE=filename.properties

    function getProperty {
       PROP_KEY=$1
       PROP_VALUE=`cat $PROPERTY_FILE | grep "$PROP_KEY" | cut -d'=' -f2`
       echo $PROP_VALUE
    }

    echo "# Reading property from $PROPERTY_FILE"
    DB_USER=$(getProperty "db.username")
    DB_PASS=$(getProperty "db.password")
    ROOT_LOC=$(getProperty "root.location")
    echo $DB_USER
    echo $DB_PASS
    echo $ROOT_LOC
    echo "Writing on DB ... "
    mysql -u$DB_USER -p$DB_PASS dbname<<EOFMYSQL

    update tablename set tablename.value_ = "$ROOT_LOC" where tablename.name_="Root directory location";
    EOFMYSQL
    echo "Writing root location($ROOT_LOC) is done ... "
    counter=`mysql -u${DB_USER} -p${DB_PASS} dbname -e "select count(*) from tablename where tablename.name_='Root directory location' and tablename.value_ = '$ROOT_LOC';" | grep -v "count"`;

    if [ "$counter" = "1" ]
    then
    echo "ROOT location updated"

How do I prevent a Gateway Timeout with FastCGI on Nginx

Proxy timeouts are well, for proxies, not for FastCGI...

The directives that affect FastCGI timeouts are client_header_timeout, client_body_timeout and send_timeout.

Edit: Considering what's found on nginx wiki, the send_timeout directive is responsible for setting general timeout of response (which was bit misleading). For FastCGI there's fastcgi_read_timeout which is affecting the fastcgi process response timeout.

How to get the GL library/headers?

Windows

On Windows you need to include the gl.h header for OpenGL 1.1 support and link against OpenGL32.lib. Both are a part of the Windows SDK. In addition, you might want the following headers which you can get from http://www.opengl.org/registry .

  • <GL/glext.h> - OpenGL 1.2 and above compatibility profile and extension interfaces..
  • <GL/glcorearb.h> - OpenGL core profile and ARB extension interfaces, as described in appendix G.2 of the OpenGL 4.3 Specification. Does not include interfaces found only in the compatibility profile.
  • <GL/glxext.h> - GLX 1.3 and above API and GLX extension interfaces.
  • <GL/wglext.h> - WGL extension interfaces.

Linux

On Linux you need to link against libGL.so, which is usually a symlink to libGL.so.1, which is yet a symlink to the actual library/driver which is a part of your graphics driver. For example, on my system the actual driver library is named libGL.so.256.53, which is the version number of the nvidia driver I use. You also need to include the gl.h header, which is usually a part of a Mesa or Xorg package. Again, you might need glext.h and glxext.h from http://www.opengl.org/registry . glxext.h holds GLX extensions, the equivalent to wglext.h on Windows.

If you want to use OpenGL 3.x or OpenGL 4.x functionality without the functionality which were moved into the GL_ARB_compatibility extension, use the new gl3.h header from the registry webpage. It replaces gl.h and also glext.h (as long as you only need core functionality).

Last but not the least, glaux.h is not a header associated with OpenGL. I assume you've read the awful NEHE tutorials and just went along with it. Glaux is a horribly outdated Win32 library (1996) for loading uncompressed bitmaps. Use something better, like libPNG, which also supports alpha channels.

How to determine a Python variable's type?

Just do not do it. Asking for something's type is wrong in itself. Instead use polymorphism. Find or if necessary define by yourself the method that does what you want for any possible type of input and just call it without asking about anything. If you need to work with built-in types or types defined by a third-party library, you can always inherit from them and use your own derivatives instead. Or you can wrap them inside your own class. This is the object-oriented way to resolve such problems.

If you insist on checking exact type and placing some dirty ifs here and there, you can use __class__ property or type function to do it, but soon you will find yourself updating all these ifs with additional cases every two or three commits. Doing it the OO way prevents that and lets you only define a new class for a new type of input instead.

js 'types' can only be used in a .ts file - Visual Studio Code using @ts-check

I'm using flow with vscode but had the same problem. I solved it with these steps:

  1. Install the extension Flow Language Support

  2. Disable the built-in TypeScript extension:

    1. Go to Extensions tab
    2. Search for @builtin TypeScript and JavaScript Language Features
    3. Click on Disable

Scanner vs. StringTokenizer vs. String.Split

String.split seems to be much slower than StringTokenizer. The only advantage with split is that you get an array of the tokens. Also you can use any regular expressions in split. org.apache.commons.lang.StringUtils has a split method which works much more faster than any of two viz. StringTokenizer or String.split. But the CPU utilization for all the three is nearly the same. So we also need a method which is less CPU intensive, which I am still not able to find.

Build and Install unsigned apk on device without the development server?

There are two extensions you can use for this. This is added to react-native for setting these:

  1. disableDevInDebug: true: Disables dev server in debug buildType
  2. bundleInDebug: true: Adds jsbundle to debug buildType.

So, your final project.ext.react in android/app/build.gradle should look like below

project.ext.react = [
    enableHermes: false, // clean and rebuild if changing
    devDisabledInDev: true, // Disable dev server in dev release
    bundleInDev: true, // add bundle to dev apk
]

PHPMailer character encoding issues

If you are 100% sure $message contain ISO-8859-1 you can use utf8_encode as David says. Otherwise use mb_detect_encoding and mb_convert_encoding on $message.

Also take note that

$mail -> charSet = "UTF-8";

Should be replaced by:

$mail->CharSet = 'UTF-8';

And placed after the instantiation of the class (after the new). The properties are case sensitive! See the PHPMailer doc fot the list & exact spelling.

Also the default encoding of PHPMailer is 8bit which can be problematic with UTF-8 data. To fix this you can do:

$mail->Encoding = 'base64';

Take note that 'quoted-printable' would probably work too in these cases (and maybe even 'binary'). For more details you can read RFC1341 - Content-Transfer-Encoding Header Field.

.rar, .zip files MIME Type

In a linked question, there's some Objective-C code to get the mime type for a file URL. I've created a Swift extension based on that Objective-C code to get the mime type:

import Foundation
import MobileCoreServices

extension URL {
    var mimeType: String? {
        guard self.pathExtension.count != 0 else {
            return nil
        }

        let pathExtension = self.pathExtension as CFString
        if let preferredIdentifier = UTTypeCreatePreferredIdentifierForTag(kUTTagClassFilenameExtension, pathExtension, nil) {
            guard let mimeType = UTTypeCopyPreferredTagWithClass(preferredIdentifier.takeRetainedValue(), kUTTagClassMIMEType) else {
                return nil
            }
            return mimeType.takeRetainedValue() as String
        }

        return nil
    }
}

ng if with angular for string contains

All javascript methods are applicable with angularjs because angularjs itself is a javascript framework so you can use indexOf() inside angular directives

<li ng-repeat="select in Items">
         <foo ng-repeat="newin select.values">
<span ng-if="newin.label.indexOf(x) !== -1">{{newin.label}}</span></foo>
</li>
//where x is your character to be found

How do Mockito matchers work?

Just a small addition to Jeff Bowman's excellent answer, as I found this question when searching for a solution to one of my own problems:

If a call to a method matches more than one mock's when trained calls, the order of the when calls is important, and should be from the most wider to the most specific. Starting from one of Jeff's examples:

when(foo.quux(anyInt(), anyInt())).thenReturn(true);
when(foo.quux(anyInt(), eq(5))).thenReturn(false);

is the order that ensures the (probably) desired result:

foo.quux(3 /*any int*/, 8 /*any other int than 5*/) //returns true
foo.quux(2 /*any int*/, 5) //returns false

If you inverse the when calls then the result would always be true.

What is an opaque response, and what purpose does it serve?

javascript is a bit tricky getting the answer, I fixed it by getting the api from the backend and then calling it to the frontend.

public function get_typechange () {

    $ url = "https://........";
    $ json = file_get_contents ($url);
    $ data = json_decode ($ json, true);
    $ resp = json_encode ($data);
    $ error = json_last_error_msg ();
    return $ resp;

}

Div table-cell vertical align not working

Because you still using float...

try to remove "float" and wrap it with display:table

example :

<div style="display:table">
 <div style="display:table-cell;vertical-align:middle;text-align:center">
       Hai i'm center here Lol
 </div>
</div>

Better way to set distance between flexbox items

I used another approach. Used negative margin on the container, which needs to be the same as each child so for example 10px. Then for each child reduced the width by the total margin each side using calc(), which in this case is 20px.

Here is an example: https://codepen.io/anon/pen/KJLZVg

This helps when doing things responsively as you don't need to target specific nth-child to keep it flush on each side of the container when it wraps.

.parent {
    padding: 0 10px;
}
.container {
    display: flex;
    margin: 0 -10px;
    flex-wrap: wrap;
    width: 100%;
    max-width: 500px;
    margin: 0 auto;
}
.child {
    margin: 0 10px 25px 10px;
    flex: 0 0 calc(25% - 20px);
    height: 40px;
    background: red;
}

<div class="parent">
<div class="container">
    <div class="child"></div>
    <div class="child"></div>
    <div class="child"></div>
    <div class="child"></div>
    <div class="child"></div>
    <div class="child"></div>
    <div class="child"></div>
</div>

Also using flex: 0 0 (width) it helps with IE browser.

What port number does SOAP use?

SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is the communication protocol in the web service scenario.

One benefit of SOAP is that it allowas RPC to execute through a firewall. But to pass through a firewall, you will probably want to use 80. it uses port no.8084 To the firewall, a SOAP conversation on 80 looks like a POST to a web page. However, there are extensions in SOAP which are specifically aimed at the firewall. In the future, it may be that firewalls will be configured to filter SOAP messages. But as of today, most firewalls are SOAP ignorant.

so exclusively open SOAP Port in Firewalls

Hive query output to file

To directly save the file in HDFS, use the below command:

hive> insert overwrite  directory '/user/cloudera/Sample' row format delimited fields terminated by '\t' stored as textfile select * from table where id >100;

This will put the contents in the folder /user/cloudera/Sample in HDFS.

Upload Progress Bar in PHP

I'm sorry to say that to the best of my knowledge a pure PHP upload progress bar, or even a PHP/Javascript upload progress bar is not possible because of how PHP works. Your best bet is to use some form of Flash uploader.

AFAIK This is because your script is not executed until all the superglobals are populated, which includes $_FILES. By the time your PHP script gets called, the file is fully uploaded.

EDIT: This is no longer true. It was in 2010.

Install IPA with iTunes 12

For newest iTunes 12.7 and above can easily install IPA by copy and paste

  1. Select and copy your .ipa (cmd+c or ctrl+c)
  2. Connect phone to laptop
  3. Open iTunes and select your device tab on top left of iTunes
  4. Select the music tab
  5. Paste the ipa (cmd+v or ctrl+v) not drag

There isn't anything to compare. Nothing to compare, branches are entirely different commit histories

I solved that problem. In my case when i did “git clone” in one directory of my choice without do “git init” inside of that repository. Then I moved in to the cloned repository, where already have a “.git” (is a git repository i.e. do not need a “git init”) and finally I started do my changes or anything.

It probably doesn’t solve the problem but shows you how to avoid it.

The command git clone should be a “cd” command imbued if no submodule exists.

HTML table needs spacing between columns, not rows

In most cases it could be better to pad the columns only on the right so just the spacing between the columns gets padded, and the first column is still aligned with the table.

CSS:

.padding-table-columns td
{
    padding:0 5px 0 0; /* Only right padding*/
}

HTML:

<table className="padding-table-columns">
  <tr>
    <td>Cell one</td>
     <!-- There will be a 5px space here-->
    <td>Cell two</td>
     <!-- There will be an invisible 5px space here-->
  </tr>
</table>

Parsing PDF files (especially with tables) with PDFBox

You can use PDFBox's PDFTextStripperByArea class to extract text from a specific region of a document. You can build on this by identifying the region each cell of the table. This isn't provided out of the box, but the example DrawPrintTextLocations class demonstrates how you can parse the bounding boxes of individual characters in a document (it would be great to parse bounding boxes of strings or paragraphs, but I haven't seen support in PDFBox for this - see this question). You can use this approach to group up all touching bounding boxes to identify distinct cells of a table. One way to do this is to maintain a set boxes of Rectangle2D regions and then for each parsed character find the character's bounding box as in DrawPrintTextLocations.writeString(String string, List<TextPosition> textPositions) and merge it with the existing contents.

Rectangle2D bounds = s.getBounds2D();
// Pad sides to detect almost touching boxes
Rectangle2D hitbox = bounds.getBounds2D();
final double dx = 1.0; // This value works for me, feel free to tweak (or add setter)
final double dy = 0.000; // Rows of text tend to overlap, so no need to extend
hitbox.add(bounds.getMinX() - dx , bounds.getMinY() - dy);
hitbox.add(bounds.getMaxX() + dx , bounds.getMaxY() + dy);

// Find all overlapping boxes
List<Rectangle2D> intersectList = new ArrayList<Rectangle2D>();
for(Rectangle2D box: boxes) {
    if(box.intersects(hitbox)) {
        intersectList.add(box);
    }
}

// Combine all touching boxes and update
for(Rectangle2D box: intersectList) {
    bounds.add(box);
    boxes.remove(box);
}
boxes.add(bounds);

You can then pass these regions to PDFTextStripperByArea.

You can also go one further and separate out the horizontal and vertical components of these regions, and so infer regions of all the table's cells, regardless of whether then hold any content.

I have had cause to perform these steps, and eventually wrote my own PDFTableStripper class using PDFBox. I've shared my code as a gist on GitHub. The main method gives an example of how the class can be used:

try (PDDocument document = PDDocument.load(new File(args[0])))
{
    final double res = 72; // PDF units are at 72 DPI
    PDFTableStripper stripper = new PDFTableStripper();
    stripper.setSortByPosition(true);

    // Choose a region in which to extract a table (here a 6"wide, 9" high rectangle offset 1" from top left of page)
    stripper.setRegion(new Rectangle(
        (int) Math.round(1.0*res),
        (int) Math.round(1*res),
        (int) Math.round(6*res),
        (int) Math.round(9.0*res)));

    // Repeat for each page of PDF
    for (int page = 0; page < document.getNumberOfPages(); ++page)
    {
        System.out.println("Page " + page);
        PDPage pdPage = document.getPage(page);
        stripper.extractTable(pdPage);
        for(int c=0; c<stripper.getColumns(); ++c) {
            System.out.println("Column " + c);
            for(int r=0; r<stripper.getRows(); ++r) {
                System.out.println("Row " + r);
                System.out.println(stripper.getText(r, c));
            }
        }
    }
}

Java ArrayList - how can I tell if two lists are equal, order not mattering?

I had this same problem and came up with a different solution. This one also works when duplicates are involved:

public static boolean equalsWithoutOrder(List<?> fst, List<?> snd){
  if(fst != null && snd != null){
    if(fst.size() == snd.size()){
      // create copied lists so the original list is not modified
      List<?> cfst = new ArrayList<Object>(fst);
      List<?> csnd = new ArrayList<Object>(snd);

      Iterator<?> ifst = cfst.iterator();
      boolean foundEqualObject;
      while( ifst.hasNext() ){
        Iterator<?> isnd = csnd.iterator();
        foundEqualObject = false;
        while( isnd.hasNext() ){
          if( ifst.next().equals(isnd.next()) ){
            ifst.remove();
            isnd.remove();
            foundEqualObject = true;
            break;
          }
        }

        if( !foundEqualObject ){
          // fail early
          break;
        }
      }
      if(cfst.isEmpty()){ //both temporary lists have the same size
        return true;
      }
    }
  }else if( fst == null && snd == null ){
    return true;
  }
  return false;
}

Advantages compared to some other solutions:

  • less than O(N²) complexity (although I have not tested it's real performance comparing to solutions in other answers here);
  • exits early;
  • checks for null;
  • works even when duplicates are involved: if you have an array [1,2,3,3] and another array [1,2,2,3] most solutions here tell you they are the same when not considering the order. This solution avoids this by removing equal elements from the temporary lists;
  • uses semantic equality (equals) and not reference equality (==);
  • does not sort itens, so they don't need to be sortable (by implement Comparable) for this solution to work.

Assuming you have a JSON hash hanging around somewhere, to automatically convert it into something like WarHog's version, wrap your JSON hash contents in %q{hsh} tags.

This seems to automatically add all the necessary escaped text like in WarHog's answer.

How to check iOS version?

Add the Swift code below in your project and access information such as iOS version and device easily.

class DeviceInfo: NSObject {

    struct ScreenSize
    {
        static let SCREEN_WIDTH = UIScreen.main.bounds.size.width
        static let SCREEN_HEIGHT = UIScreen.main.bounds.size.height
        static let SCREEN_MAX_LENGTH = max(ScreenSize.SCREEN_WIDTH, ScreenSize.SCREEN_HEIGHT)
        static let SCREEN_MIN_LENGTH = min(ScreenSize.SCREEN_WIDTH, ScreenSize.SCREEN_HEIGHT)
    }

    struct DeviceType
    {
        static let IS_IPHONE_4_OR_LESS =  UIDevice.current.userInterfaceIdiom == .phone && ScreenSize.SCREEN_MAX_LENGTH < 568.0

        static let IS_IPHONE_6 = UIDevice.current.userInterfaceIdiom == .phone && ScreenSize.SCREEN_MAX_LENGTH >= 667.0
        static let IS_IPHONE_6P = UIDevice.current.userInterfaceIdiom == .phone && ScreenSize.SCREEN_MAX_LENGTH == 736.0

break/exit script

Not pretty, but here is a way to implement an exit() command in R which works for me.

exit <- function() {
  .Internal(.invokeRestart(list(NULL, NULL), NULL))
}

print("this is the last message")
exit()
print("you should not see this")

Only lightly tested, but when I run this, I see this is the last message and then the script aborts without any error message.

Conda activate not working?

Functions are not exported by default to be made available in subshells. I'd recommend you do:

source ~/anaconda3/etc/profile.d/conda.sh
conda activate my_env

In the commands above, replace ~/anaconda3/ with the path to your miniconda / anaconda installation.

java calling a method from another class

You're very close. What you need to remember is when you're calling a method from another class you need to tell the compiler where to find that method.

So, instead of simply calling addWord("someWord"), you will need to initialise an instance of the WordList class (e.g. WordList list = new WordList();), and then call the method using that (i.e. list.addWord("someWord");.

However, your code at the moment will still throw an error there, because that would be trying to call a non-static method from a static one. So, you could either make addWord() static, or change the methods in the Words class so that they're not static.

My bad with the above paragraph - however you might want to reconsider ProcessInput() being a static method - does it really need to be?

Android ListView Selector Color

TO ADD: @Christopher's answer does not work on API 7/8 (as per @Jonny's correct comment) IF you are using colours, instead of drawables. (In my testing, using drawables as per Christopher works fine)

Here is the FIX for 2.3 and below when using colours:

As per @Charles Harley, there is a bug in 2.3 and below where filling the list item with a colour causes the colour to flow out over the whole list. His fix is to define a shape drawable containing the colour you want, and to use that instead of the colour.

I suggest looking at this link if you want to just use a colour as selector, and are targeting Android 2 (or at least allow for Android 2).

Turn off iPhone/Safari input element rounding

I had the same problem but only for the submit button. Needed to remove the inner shadow and rounded corners -

How to allow only numbers in textbox in mvc4 razor

Maybe you can use the [Integer] data annotation (If you use the DataAnnotationsExtensions http://dataannotationsextensions.org/) . However, this wil only check if the value is an integer, nót if it is filled in (So you may also need the [Required] attribute).

If you enable Unobtrusive Validation it will validate it clientside, but you should also use Modelstate.Valid in your POST action to decline it in case people have Javascript disabled.

Python PIP Install throws TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for -=: 'Retry' and 'int'

Solution:
1. sudo apt remove python-pip
2. pip3 install pip (or install pip by get-pip.py)

Why:
This error occurred on pip 8.0.1 which installed by apt-get. And happened only when your network is unstable.

If you have a pip installed with apt, it hides the pip you installed by other ways, so you should remove the apt one first.

I disconnected the network and tested 8.0.1, 9.0.3, 10.x the 3 versions installed with pip3 or get-pip.py, no error occurred.   So, I think only the apt version of pip 8.0.1 has that bug, the others is ok.

Read Post Data submitted to ASP.Net Form

Read the Request.Form NameValueCollection and process your logic accordingly:

}

//Process login
CheckLogin(userName, password);

What is the equivalent of bigint in C#?

int in sql maps directly to int32 also know as a primitive type i.e int in C# whereas

bigint in Sql Server maps directly to int64 also know as a primitive type i.e long in C#

An explicit conversion if biginteger to integer has been defined here

What's the main difference between Java SE and Java EE?

Java EE is enterprise edition.

Includes jsp, servlets, beans, and some other stuff for server programming.

Java SE is standard edition. This is plain old Java. Includes GUI stuff.

Get java.nio.file.Path object from java.io.File

From the documentation:

Paths associated with the default provider are generally interoperable with the java.io.File class. Paths created by other providers are unlikely to be interoperable with the abstract path names represented by java.io.File. The toPath method may be used to obtain a Path from the abstract path name represented by a java.io.File object. The resulting Path can be used to operate on the same file as the java.io.File object. In addition, the toFile method is useful to construct a File from the String representation of a Path.

(emphasis mine)

So, for toFile:

Returns a File object representing this path.

And toPath:

Returns a java.nio.file.Path object constructed from the this abstract path.

StringStream in C#

I see a lot of good answers here, but none that directly address the lack of a StringStream class in C#. So I have written one of my own...

public class StringStream : Stream
{
    private readonly MemoryStream _memory;
    public StringStream(string text)
    {
        _memory = new MemoryStream(Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(text));
    }
    public StringStream()
    {
        _memory = new MemoryStream();
    }
    public StringStream(int capacity)
    {
        _memory = new MemoryStream(capacity);
    }
    public override void Flush()
    {
        _memory.Flush();
    }
    public override int Read(byte[] buffer, int offset, int count)
    {
        return  _memory.Read(buffer, offset, count);
    }
    public override long Seek(long offset, SeekOrigin origin)
    {
        return _memory.Seek(offset, origin);
    }
    public override void SetLength(long value)
    {
        _memory.SetLength(value);
    }
    public override void Write(byte[] buffer, int offset, int count)
    {
        _memory.Write(buffer, offset, count);
        return;
    }
    public override bool CanRead => _memory.CanRead;
    public override bool CanSeek => _memory.CanSeek;
    public override bool CanWrite => _memory.CanWrite;
    public override long Length =>  _memory.Length;
    public override long Position
    {
        get => _memory.Position;
        set => _memory.Position = value;
    }
    public override string ToString()
    {
        return System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetString(_memory.GetBuffer(), 0, (int) _memory.Length);
    }
    public override int ReadByte()
    {
        return _memory.ReadByte();
    }
    public override void WriteByte(byte value)
    {
        _memory.WriteByte(value);
    }
}

An example of its use...

        string s0 =
            "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor\r\n" +
            "incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud\r\n" +
            "exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor\r\n" +
            "in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint\r\n" +
            "occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.\r\n";
        StringStream ss0 = new StringStream(s0);
        StringStream ss1 = new StringStream();
        int line = 1;
        Console.WriteLine("Contents of input stream: ");
        Console.WriteLine();
        using (StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(ss0))
        {
            using (StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(ss1))
            {
                while (!reader.EndOfStream)
                {
                    string s = reader.ReadLine();
                    Console.WriteLine("Line " + line++ + ": " + s);
                    writer.WriteLine(s);
                }
            }
        }

        Console.WriteLine();
        Console.WriteLine("Contents of output stream: ");
        Console.WriteLine();
        Console.Write(ss1.ToString());

How can the size of an input text box be defined in HTML?

You can set the width in pixels via inline styling:

<input type="text" name="text" style="width: 195px;">

You can also set the width with a visible character length:

<input type="text" name="text" size="35">

Checkbox for nullable boolean

Checkbox only offer you 2 values (true, false). Nullable boolean has 3 values (true, false, null) so it's impossible to do it with a checkbox.

A good option is to use a drop down instead.

How to set Spring profile from system variable?

I normally configure the applicationContext using Annotation based configuration rather than XML based configuration. Anyway, I believe both of them have the same priority.

*Answering your question, system variable has higher priority *

Getting profile based beans from applicationContext

  • Use @Profile on a Bean

@Component
@Profile("dev")
public class DatasourceConfigForDev

Now, the profile is dev

Note : if the Profile is given as @Profile("!dev") then the profile will exclude dev and be for all others.

  • Use profiles attribute in XML

<beans profile="dev">
    <bean id="DatasourceConfigForDev" class="org.skoolguy.profiles.DatasourceConfigForDev"/>
</beans>

Set the value for profile:

  • Programmatically via WebApplicationInitializer interface

    In web applications, WebApplicationInitializer can be used to configure the ServletContext programmatically
@Configuration
public class MyWebApplicationInitializer implements WebApplicationInitializer {

    @Override
    public void onStartup(ServletContext servletContext) throws ServletException {
            servletContext.setInitParameter("spring.profiles.active", "dev");
    }
}
  • Programmatically via ConfigurableEnvironment

    You can also set profiles directly on the environment:
    @Autowired
    private ConfigurableEnvironment env;

    // ...

    env.setActiveProfiles("dev");
  • Context Parameter in web.xml

    profiles can be activated in the web.xml of the web application as well, using a context parameter:
    <context-param>
        <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name>
        <param-value>/WEB-INF/app-config.xml</param-value>
    </context-param>
    <context-param>
        <param-name>spring.profiles.active</param-name>
        <param-value>dev</param-value>
    </context-param>
  • JVM System Parameter

    The profile names passed as the parameter will be activated during application start-up:

    -Dspring.profiles.active=dev

    In IDEs, you can set the environment variables and values to use when an application runs. The following is the Run Configuration in Eclipse:

Eclipse Run Configuration - screenshot is unavailable

  • Environment Variable

    to set via command line : export spring_profiles_active=dev

Any bean that does not specify a profile belongs to “default” profile.

The priority order is :

  1. Context parameter in web.xml
  2. WebApplicationInitializer
  3. JVM System parameter
  4. Environment variable

How to update a pull request from forked repo?

I did it using below steps:

  1. git reset --hard <commit key of the pull request>
  2. Did my changes in code I wanted to do
  3. git add
  4. git commit --amend
  5. git push -f origin <name of the remote branch of pull request>

Check for file exists or not in sql server?

You can achieve this using a cursor but the performance is much slower than whileloop.. Here's the code:

set nocount on
declare cur cursor local fast_forward for
    (select filepath from Directory)
open cur;
declare @fullpath varchar(250);
declare @isExists int;

fetch from cur into @fullpath
while @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
    begin
        exec xp_fileexist @fullpath, @isExists out
        if @isExists = 1
            print @fullpath + char(9) + char(9) + 'file exists'
        else
            print @fullpath + char(9) + char(9) + 'file does not exists'
        fetch from cur into @fullpath
    end
close cur
deallocate cur

or you can put it in a tempTable if you want to integrate it in your frontend..

create proc GetFileStatus as
begin
    set nocount on
    create table #tempFileStatus(FilePath varchar(300),FileStatus varchar(30))
    declare cur cursor local fast_forward for
        (select filepath from Directory)
    open cur;
    declare @fullpath varchar(250);
    declare @isExists int;

    fetch from cur into @fullpath
    while @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
        begin
            exec xp_fileexist @fullpath, @isExists out
            if @isExists = 1
                insert into #tempFileStatus values(@fullpath,'File exist')
            else
                insert into #tempFileStatus values(@fullpath,'File does not exists')
            fetch from cur into @fullpath
        end
    close cur
    deallocate cur
    select * from #tempFileStatus
    drop table #tempFileStatus
end

then call it using:

exec GetFileStatus

Summarizing multiple columns with dplyr?

For completeness: with dplyr v0.2 ddply with colwise will also do this:

> ddply(df, .(grp), colwise(mean))
  grp        a    b        c        d
1   1 4.333333 4.00 1.000000 2.000000
2   2 2.000000 2.75 2.750000 2.750000
3   3 3.000000 4.00 4.333333 3.666667

but it is slower, at least in this case:

> microbenchmark(ddply(df, .(grp), colwise(mean)),
                  df %>% group_by(grp) %>% summarise_each(funs(mean)))
Unit: milliseconds
                                            expr      min       lq     mean
                ddply(df, .(grp), colwise(mean))     3.278002 3.331744 3.533835
 df %>% group_by(grp) %>% summarise_each(funs(mean)) 1.001789 1.031528 1.109337

   median       uq      max neval
 3.353633 3.378089 7.592209   100
 1.121954 1.133428 2.292216   100

How to add /usr/local/bin in $PATH on Mac

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/git/bin:/usr/local/bin

One note: you don't need quotation marks here because it's on the right hand side of an assignment, but in general, and especially on Macs with their tradition of spacy pathnames, expansions like $PATH should be double-quoted as "$PATH".

align an image and some text on the same line without using div width?

I built on the last answer and used display:table for an outer div, and display:table-cell for inner divs.

This was the only thing that worked for me using CSS.

JavaScript code to stop form submission

You can use the return value of the function to prevent the form submission

<form name="myForm" onsubmit="return validateMyForm();">

and function like

<script type="text/javascript">
function validateMyForm()

EDIT :

Thanks to Vikram for his workaround for if validateMyForm() returns false:

 <form onsubmit="event.preventDefault(); validateMyForm();">

where validateMyForm() is a function that returns false if validation fails. The key point is to use the name event. We cannot use for e.g. e.preventDefault()

Difference between IISRESET and IIS Stop-Start command

Take IISReset as a suite of commands that helps you manage IIS start / stop etc.

Which means you need to specify option (/switch) what you want to do to carry any operation.

Default behavior OR default switch is /restart with iisreset so you do not need to run command twice with /start and /stop.

Hope this clarifies your question. For reference the output of iisreset /? is:

IISRESET.EXE (c) Microsoft Corp. 1998-2005

Usage:
iisreset [computername]

    /RESTART Stop and then restart all Internet services.
    /START              Start all Internet services.
    /STOP               Stop all Internet services.
    /REBOOT             Reboot the computer.
    /REBOOTONERROR Reboot the computer if an error occurs when starting,
                        stopping, or restarting Internet services.
    /NOFORCE Do not forcefully terminate Internet services if
                        attempting to stop them gracefully fails.
    /TIMEOUT:val Specify the timeout value ( in seconds ) to wait for
                        a successful stop of Internet services. On expiration
                        of this timeout the computer can be rebooted if
                        the /REBOOTONERROR parameter is specified.
                        The default value is 20s for restart, 60s for stop,
                        and 0s for reboot.
    /STATUS Display the status of all Internet services.
    /ENABLE Enable restarting of Internet Services
                        on the local system.
    /DISABLE Disable restarting of Internet Services
                        on the local system.

How to "comment-out" (add comment) in a batch/cmd?

Putting comments on the same line with commands: use & :: comment

color C & :: set red font color
echo IMPORTANT INFORMATION
color & :: reset the color to default

Explanation:

& separates two commands, so in this case color C is the first command and :: set red font color is the second one.

Important:

This statement with comment looks intuitively correct:

goto error1 :: handling the error

but it is not a valid use of the comment. It works only because goto ignores all arguments past the first one. The proof is easy, this goto will not fail either:

goto error1 handling the error

But similar attempt

color 17 :: grey on blue

fails executing the command due to 4 arguments unknown to the color command: ::, grey, on, blue.

It will only work as:

color 17     &      :: grey on blue

So the ampersand is inevitable.

Clear the entire history stack and start a new activity on Android

Case 1:Only two activity A and B:

Here Activity flow is A->B .On clicking backbutton from B we need to close the application then while starting Activity B from A just call finish() this will prevent android from storing Activity A in to the Backstack.eg for activity A is Loding/Splash screen of application.

Intent newIntent = new Intent(A.this, B.class);
startActivity(newIntent);
finish();

Case 2:More than two activitiy:

If there is a flow like A->B->C->D->B and on clicking back button in Activity B while coming from Activity D.In that case we should use.

Intent newIntent = new Intent(D.this,B.class);
newIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);
newIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
startActivity(newIntent);

Here Activity B will be started from the backstack rather than a new instance because of Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP and Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK clears the stack and makes it the top one.So when we press back button the whole application will be terminated.

MySQL date formats - difficulty Inserting a date

Looks like you've not encapsulated your string properly. Try this:

INSERT INTO custorder VALUES ('Kevin','yes'), STR_TO_DATE('1-01-2012', '%d-%m-%Y');

Alternatively, you can do the following but it is not recommended. Make sure that you use STR_TO-DATE it is because when you are developing web applications you have to explicitly convert String to Date which is annoying. Use first One.

INSERT INTO custorder VALUES ('Kevin','yes'), '2012-01-01';

I'm not confident that the above SQL is valid, however, and you may want to move the date part into the brackets. If you can provide the exact error you're getting, I might be able to more directly help with the issue.

What is the single most influential book every programmer should read?

alt text

This last year I took a number of classes. I read

The Innovator's Dilemma (disruptive tech)
The Mythical Man Month (managing software)
Crossing the Chasm (startup)
Database Management Systems, The COW Book
Programming C#, The OSTRICH Book
Beginning iPhone Developmen, The GRAPEFRUIT Book

Each book was amazing but the Innovator's Dilemma by Clayton Christensen (1997!!!) is really a fantastic book, and it got me really thinking about the modern software world. The challenge addressed is disruptive technology, and how disk drive companies and non-technical companies are always disrupted by new, game changing technology. It gives one a new perspective when thinking about Google, probably the biggest 'web' company. Why do they have their hands in EVERYTHING? It's because they don't want to have their position disrupted by something new. The preview on google is plenty to get the idea. Read it!

Read a XML (from a string) and get some fields - Problems reading XML

Use Linq-XML,

XDocument doc = XDocument.Load(file);

var result = from ele in doc.Descendants("sog")
              select new
              {
                 field1 = (string)ele.Element("field1")
              };
 foreach (var t in result)
  {
      HttpContext.Current.Response.Write(t.field1);
  }

OR : Get the node list of <sog> tag.

 XmlDocument xmlDoc = new XmlDocument();
 xmlDoc.Load(myXML);
 XmlNodeList parentNode = xmlDoc.GetElementsByTagName("sog");
 foreach (XmlNode childrenNode in parentNode)
  {
    HttpContext.Current.Response.Write(childrenNode.SelectSingleNode("field1").InnerText);
   }

Can't use method return value in write context

I'm not sure if this would be a common mistake, but if you do something like:

$var = 'value' .= 'value2';

this will also produce the same error

Can't use method return value in write context

You can't have an = and a .= in the same statement. You can use one or the other, but not both.

Note, I understand this is unrelated to the actual code in the question, however this question is the top result when searching for the error message, so I wanted to post it here for completeness.

How to set time delay in javascript

Here is what I am doing to solve this issue. I agree this is because of the timing issue and needed a pause to execute the code.

var delayInMilliseconds = 1000;
setTimeout(function() {
 //add your code here to execute
 }, delayInMilliseconds);

This new code will pause it for 1 second and meanwhile run your code.

How to join two tables by multiple columns in SQL?

No, just include the different fields in the "ON" clause of 1 inner join statement:

SELECT * from Evalulation e JOIN Value v ON e.CaseNum = v.CaseNum
    AND e.FileNum = v.FileNum AND e.ActivityNum = v.ActivityNum

LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'System.String ToString()' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression

If you really want to type ToString inside your query, you could write an expression tree visitor that rewrites the call to ToString with a call to the appropriate StringConvert function:

using System.Linq;
using System.Data.Entity.SqlServer;
using System.Linq.Expressions;
using static System.Linq.Expressions.Expression;
using System;

namespace ToStringRewriting {
    class ToStringRewriter : ExpressionVisitor {
        static MethodInfo stringConvertMethodInfo = typeof(SqlFunctions).GetMethods()
                 .Single(x => x.Name == "StringConvert" && x.GetParameters()[0].ParameterType == typeof(decimal?));

        protected override Expression VisitMethodCall(MethodCallExpression node) {
            var method = node.Method;
            if (method.Name=="ToString") {
                if (node.Object.GetType() == typeof(string)) { return node.Object; }
                node = Call(stringConvertMethodInfo, Convert(node.Object, typeof(decimal?));
            }
            return base.VisitMethodCall(node);
        }
    }
    class Person {
        string Name { get; set; }
        long SocialSecurityNumber { get; set; }
    }
    class Program {
        void Main() {
            Expression<Func<Person, Boolean>> expr = x => x.ToString().Length > 1;
            var rewriter = new ToStringRewriter();
            var finalExpression = rewriter.Visit(expr);
            var dcx = new MyDataContext();
            var query = dcx.Persons.Where(finalExpression);

        }
    }
}

Convert a Pandas DataFrame to a dictionary

Should a dictionary like:

{'red': '0.500', 'yellow': '0.250, 'blue': '0.125'}

be required out of a dataframe like:

        a      b
0     red  0.500
1  yellow  0.250
2    blue  0.125

simplest way would be to do:

dict(df.values)

working snippet below:

import pandas as pd
df = pd.DataFrame({'a': ['red', 'yellow', 'blue'], 'b': [0.5, 0.25, 0.125]})
dict(df.values)

How to build query string with Javascript

This doesn't directly answer your question, but here's a generic function which will create a URL that contains query string parameters. The parameters (names and values) are safely escaped for inclusion in a URL.

function buildUrl(url, parameters){
  var qs = "";
  for(var key in parameters) {
    var value = parameters[key];
    qs += encodeURIComponent(key) + "=" + encodeURIComponent(value) + "&";
  }
  if (qs.length > 0){
    qs = qs.substring(0, qs.length-1); //chop off last "&"
    url = url + "?" + qs;
  }
  return url;
}

// example:
var url = "http://example.com/";

var parameters = {
  name: "George Washington",
  dob: "17320222"
};

console.log(buildUrl(url, parameters));
// => http://www.example.com/?name=George%20Washington&dob=17320222

How to include js and CSS in JSP with spring MVC

Put your style.css directly into the webapp/css folder, not into the WEB-INF folder.

Then add the following code into your spring-dispatcher-servlet.xml

<mvc:resources mapping="/css/**" location="/css/" />

and then add following code into your jsp page

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/style.css"/>

I hope it will work.

How to change the text color of first select option

For Option 1 used as the placeholder:

select:invalid { color:grey; }

All other options:

select:valid { color:black; }

IIS: Display all sites and bindings in PowerShell

Try this:

Import-Module Webadministration
Get-ChildItem -Path IIS:\Sites

It should return something that looks like this:

Name ID State Physical Path Bindings
----             --   -----      -------------                  --------
ChristophersWeb 22   Started    C:\temp             http *:8080:ChristophersWebsite.ChDom.com

From here you can refine results, but be careful. A pipe to the select statement will not give you what you need. Based on your requirements I would build a custom object or hashtable.

Port 443 in use by "Unable to open process" with PID 4

Some process is using this port, so you can change the port that is used by xampp, to be able to use it. For this job you have to do this:

1- Open httpd-ssl.conf in xampp\apache\conf\extra

2- Look for the line containing Listen 443

3- Change port number to anything you want. I use 4430. ex. Listen 4430.

4- Replace every 443 strings in that file with 4430.

5- Save the file.

Adobe Reader Command Line Reference

Having /A without additional parameters other than the filename didn't work for me, but the following code worked fine with /n

string sfile = @".\help\delta-pqca-400-100-300-fc4-user-manual.pdf";
Process myProcess = new Process();
myProcess.StartInfo.FileName = "AcroRd32.exe";
myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments = " /n " + "\"" + sfile + "\"";
myProcess.Start();

How do I disable Git Credential Manager for Windows?

pretty old topic but this is maybe a help for someone searching for the problem where the above tips does not solved it.

I use

git credential-manager remove -force

Squaring all elements in a list

you can do

square_list =[i**2 for i in start_list]

which returns

[25, 9, 1, 4, 16]

or, if the list already has values

square_list.extend([i**2 for i in start_list])

which results in a list that looks like:

[25, 9, 1, 4, 16]

Note: you don't want to do

square_list.append([i**2 for i in start_list])

as it literally adds a list to the original list, such as:

[_original_, _list_, _data_, [25, 9, 1, 4, 16]]

Using group by and having clause

Because we can not use Where clause with aggregate functions like count(),min(), sum() etc. so having clause came into existence to overcome this problem in sql. see example for having clause go through this link

var newsData,
    SortData = '',
    i = 1;

$.getJSON("http://www.stellarbiotechnologies.com/media/press-releases/json", function(data) {

   newsData = data.news;

   function SortByDate(x,y) {
     return ((x.published == y.published) ? 0 : ((x.published < y.published) ? 1 : -1 ));
   }

   var sortedNewsData = newsData.sort(SortByDate);

   $.each( sortedNewsData, function( key, val ) {
     SortData += '<article id="article' + i + '"><h4>Published on: ' + val.published + '</h4><div  class="main-news">' + val.title + '</div></article>';
     i++;
   });

   $('#news-feed').append(SortData);
});

$(window).scroll(function() {

   var $window = $(window),
       wH = $window.height(),
       wS = $window.scrollTop() + 1

   for (var j=0; j<$('article').length;j++) {
      var eT = $('#article' + j ).offset().top,
          eH = $('#article' + j ).outerHeight();

          if (wS > ((eT + eH) - (wH))) {
             $('#article' + j ).animate({'opacity': '1'}, 500);
          }
    }

});

I am sorting the data by Date and then doing lazy load on window scroll function.

I hope it helps :)

Demo

Reading multiple Scanner inputs

If every input asks the same question, you should use a for loop and an array of inputs:

Scanner dd = new Scanner(System.in);
int[] vars = new int[3];

for(int i = 0; i < vars.length; i++) {
  System.out.println("Enter next var: ");
  vars[i] = dd.nextInt();
}

Or as Chip suggested, you can parse the input from one line:

Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);
int[] vars = new int[3];

System.out.println("Enter "+vars.length+" vars: ");
for(int i = 0; i < vars.length; i++)
  vars[i] = in.nextInt();

You were on the right track, and what you did works. This is just a nicer and more flexible way of doing things.

How to get PID of process by specifying process name and store it in a variable to use further?

Another possibility would be to use pidof it usually comes with most distributions. It will return you the PID of a given process by using it's name.

pidof process_name

This way you could store that information in a variable and execute kill -9 on it.

#!/bin/bash
pid=`pidof process_name`
kill -9 $pid

javascript window.location in new tab

We have to dynamically set the attribute target="_blank" and it will open it in new tab. document.getElementsByTagName("a")[0].setAttribute('target', '_blank')

document.getElementsByTagName("a")[0].click()

If you want to open in new window, get the href link and use window.open

var link = document.getElementsByTagName("a")[0].getAttribute("href");

window.open(url, "","height=500,width=500");

Don't provide the second parameter as _blank in the above.

convert htaccess to nginx

You can easily make a Php script to parse your old htaccess, I am using this one for PRestashop rules :

$content = $_POST['content'];

    $lines   = explode(PHP_EOL, $content);
    $results = '';

    foreach($lines as $line)
    {
        $items = explode(' ', $line);

        $q = str_replace("^", "^/", $items[1]);

        if (substr($q, strlen($q) - 1) !== '$') $q .= '$';

        $buffer = 'rewrite "'.$q.'" "'.$items[2].'" last;';

        $results .= $buffer.PHP_EOL;
    }

    die($results);

How to unmount a busy device

Someone has mentioned that if you are using terminal and your current directory is inside the path which you want to unmount, you will get the error.
As a complementary, in this case, your lsof | grep path-to-be-unmounted must have below output:

bash ... path-to-be-unmounted

Oracle SQL Where clause to find date records older than 30 days

Use:

SELECT *
  FROM YOUR_TABLE
 WHERE creation_date <= TRUNC(SYSDATE) - 30

SYSDATE returns the date & time; TRUNC resets the date to being as of midnight so you can omit it if you want the creation_date that is 30 days previous including the current time.

Depending on your needs, you could also look at using ADD_MONTHS:

SELECT *
  FROM YOUR_TABLE
 WHERE creation_date <= ADD_MONTHS(TRUNC(SYSDATE), -1)

WSDL/SOAP Test With soapui

definitions is a root element of WSDL so it looks like you are not loading WSDL.

Edit:

I tested it and it looks like the whole problem is with your web server. Your web server returns WSDL to browser but it doesn't return it to any tool because these tools are using very minimalistic HTTP requests without many HTTP headers. One of missing headers is Accept. Once this header is not included in the request your server throws HTTP 400 Bad request.

The easy approach to continue is opening WSDL in the browser, save the wsdl to a file and import that file to soapUI instead of the WSDL from URL.

How to get the file path from HTML input form in Firefox 3

Actually, just before FF3 was out, I did some experiments, and FF2 sends only the filename, like did Opera 9.0. Only IE sends the full path. The behavior makes sense, because the server doesn't have to know where the user stores the file on his computer, it is irrelevant to the upload process. Unless you are writing an intranet application and get the file by direct network access!

What have changed (and that's the real point of the bug item you point to) is that FF3 no longer let access to the file path from JavaScript. And won't let type/paste a path there, which is more annoying for me: I have a shell extension which copies the path of a file from Windows Explorer to the clipboard and I used it a lot in such form. I solved the issue by using the DragDropUpload extension. But this becomes off-topic, I fear.

I wonder what your Web forms are doing to stop working with this new behavior.

[EDIT] After reading the page linked by Mike, I see indeed intranet uses of the path (identify a user for example) and local uses (show preview of an image, local management of files). User Jam-es seems to provide a workaround with nsIDOMFile (not tried yet).

Android soft keyboard covers EditText field

I had the same issue where the softkeyboard was on top of the EditText views which were placed on the bottom of the screen. I was able to find a solution by adding a single line to my AndroidManifest.xml file's relevant activity.

android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustResize|stateHidden"

This is how the whole activity tag looks like:

<activity
        android:name="com.my.MainActivity"
        android:screenOrientation="portrait"
        android:label="@string/title_activity_main"
        android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustResize|stateHidden" >
    </activity>

Here the most important value is the adjustResize. This will shift the whole UI up to give room for the softkeyboard.

Java current machine name and logged in user?

To get the currently logged in user:

System.getProperty("user.name");

To get the host name of the machine:

InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName();

To answer the last part of your question, the Java API says that getHostName() will return

the host name for this IP address, or if the operation is not allowed by the security check, the textual representation of the IP address.

Fastest way to duplicate an array in JavaScript - slice vs. 'for' loop

Technically slice is the fastest way. However, it is even faster if you add the 0 begin index.

myArray.slice(0);

is faster than

myArray.slice();

Wait until flag=true

Javascript is single threaded, hence the page blocking behaviour. You can use the deferred/promise approach suggested by others, but the most basic way would be to use window.setTimeout. E.g.

function checkFlag() {
    if(flag == false) {
       window.setTimeout(checkFlag, 100); /* this checks the flag every 100 milliseconds*/
    } else {
      /* do something*/
    }
}
checkFlag();

Here is a good tutorial with further explanation: Tutorial

EDIT

As others pointed out, the best way would be to re-structure your code to use callbacks. However, this answer should give you an idea how you can 'simulate' an asynchronous behaviour with window.setTimeout.

How to get First and Last record from a sql query?

You might want to try this, could potentially be faster than doing two queries:

select <some columns>
from (
    SELECT <some columns>,
           row_number() over (order by date desc) as rn,
           count(*) over () as total_count
    FROM mytable
    <maybe some joins here>
    WHERE <various conditions>
) t
where rn = 1
   or rn = total_count
ORDER BY date DESC

LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.EU_Admin3

What is the usefulness of PUT and DELETE HTTP request methods?

Although I take the risk of not being popular I say they are not useful nowadays.

I think they were well intended and useful in the past when for example DELETE told the server to delete the resource found at supplied URL and PUT (with its sibling PATCH) told the server to do update in an idempotent manner.

Things evolved and URLs became virtual (see url rewriting for example) making resources lose their initial meaning of real folder/subforder/file and so, CRUD action verbs covered by HTTP protocol methods (GET, POST, PUT/PATCH, DELETE) lost track.

Let's take an example:

  • /api/entity/list/{id} vs GET /api/entity/{id}
  • /api/entity/add/{id} vs POST /api/entity
  • /api/entity/edit/{id} vs PUT /api/entity/{id}
  • /api/entity/delete/{id} vs DELETE /api/entity/{id}

On the left side is not written the HTTP method, essentially it doesn't matter (POST and GET are enough) and on the right side appropriate HTTP methods are used.

Right side looks elegant, clean and professional. Imagine now you have to maintain a code that's been using the elegant API and you have to search where deletion call is done. You'll search for "api/entity" and among results you'll have to see which one is doing DELETE. Or even worse, you have a junior programmer which by mistake switched PUT with DELETE and as URL is the same shit happened.

In my opinion putting the action verb in the URL has advantages over using the appropriate HTTP method for that action even if it's not so elegant. If you want to see where delete call is made you just have to search for "api/entity/delete" and you'll find it straight away.

Building an API without the whole HTTP array of methods makes it easier to be consumed and maintained afterwards

Android - How To Override the "Back" button so it doesn't Finish() my Activity?

I think what you want is not to override the back button (that just doesn't seem like a good idea - Android OS defines that behavior, why change it?), but to use the Activity Lifecycle and persist your settings/data in the onSaveInstanceState(Bundle) event.

@Override
onSaveInstanceState(Bundle frozenState) {
    frozenState.putSerializable("object_key",
        someSerializableClassYouWantToPersist);
    // etc. until you have everything important stored in the bundle
}

Then you use onCreate(Bundle) to get everything out of that persisted bundle and recreate your state.

@Override
onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
    if(savedInstanceState!=null){ //It could be null if starting the app.
        mCustomObject = savedInstanceState.getSerializable("object_key");
    }
    // etc. until you have reloaded everything you stored
}

Consider the above psuedo-code to point you in the right direction. Reading up on the Activity Lifecycle should help you determine the best way to accomplish what you're looking for.

How to create a remote Git repository from a local one?

There is an interesting difference between the two popular solutions above:

  1. If you create the bare repository like this:

    cd     /outside_of_any_repo
    mkdir  my_remote.git
    cd     my_remote.git
    git init --bare

and then

cd  /your_path/original_repo
git remote add origin /outside_of_any_repo/my_remote.git
git push --set-upstream origin master

Then git sets up the configuration in 'original_repo' with this relationship:

original_repo origin --> /outside_of_any_repo/my_remote.git/

with the latter as the upstream remote. And the upstream remote doesn't have any other remotes in its configuration.

  1. However, if you do it the other way around:

    (from in directory original_repo)
    cd ..
    git clone --bare original_repo  /outside_of_any_repo/my_remote.git

then 'my_remote.git' winds up with its configuration having 'origin' pointing back to 'original_repo' as a remote, with a remote.origin.url equating to local directory path, which might not be appropriate if it is going to be moved to a server.

While that "remote" reference is easy to get rid of later if it isn't appropriate, 'original_repo' still has to be set up to point to 'my_remote.git' as an up-stream remote (or to wherever it is going to be shared from). So technically, you can arrive at the same result with a few more steps with approach #2. But #1 seems a more direct approach to creating a "central bare shared repo" originating from a local one, appropriate for moving to a server, with fewer steps involved. I think it depends on the role you want the remote repo to play. (And yes, this is in conflict with the documentation here.)

Caveat: I learned the above (at this writing in early August 2019) by doing a test on my local system with a real repo, and then doing a file-by-file comparison between the results. But! I am still learning, so there could be a more correct way. But my tests have helped me conclude that #1 is my currently-preferred method.

What is the fastest way to send 100,000 HTTP requests in Python?

Consider using Windmill , although Windmill probably cant do that many threads.

You could do it with a hand rolled Python script on 5 machines, each one connecting outbound using ports 40000-60000, opening 100,000 port connections.

Also, it might help to do a sample test with a nicely threaded QA app such as OpenSTA in order to get an idea of how much each server can handle.

Also, try looking into just using simple Perl with the LWP::ConnCache class. You'll probably get more performance (more connections) that way.

positional argument follows keyword argument

The grammar of the language specifies that positional arguments appear before keyword or starred arguments in calls:

argument_list        ::=  positional_arguments ["," starred_and_keywords]
                            ["," keywords_arguments]
                          | starred_and_keywords ["," keywords_arguments]
                          | keywords_arguments

Specifically, a keyword argument looks like this: tag='insider trading!' while a positional argument looks like this: ..., exchange, .... The problem lies in that you appear to have copy/pasted the parameter list, and left some of the default values in place, which makes them look like keyword arguments rather than positional ones. This is fine, except that you then go back to using positional arguments, which is a syntax error.

Also, when an argument has a default value, such as price=None, that means you don't have to provide it. If you don't provide it, it will use the default value instead.

To resolve this error, convert your later positional arguments into keyword arguments, or, if they have default values and you don't need to use them, simply don't specify them at all:

order_id = kite.order_place(self, exchange, tradingsymbol,
    transaction_type, quantity)

# Fully positional:
order_id = kite.order_place(self, exchange, tradingsymbol, transaction_type, quantity, price, product, order_type, validity, disclosed_quantity, trigger_price, squareoff_value, stoploss_value, trailing_stoploss, variety, tag)

# Some positional, some keyword (all keywords at end):

order_id = kite.order_place(self, exchange, tradingsymbol,
    transaction_type, quantity, tag='insider trading!')

Check mySQL version on Mac 10.8.5

To check your MySQL version on your mac, navigate to the directory where you installed it (default is usr/local/mysql/bin) and issue this command:

./mysql --version

Alternatively, to avoid needing to navigate to that specific dir to run the command, add its location to your path ($PATH). There's more than one way to add a dir to your $PATH (with explanations on stackoverflow and other places on how to do so), such as adding it to your ./bash_profile.

After adding the mysql bin dir to your $PATH, verify it's there by executing:

echo $PATH

Thereafter you can check your mysql version from anywhere by running (note no "./"):

mysql --version

Disable elastic scrolling in Safari

None of the 'overflow' solutions worked for me. I'm coding a parallax effect with JavaScript using jQuery. In Chrome and Safari on OSX the elastic/rubber-band effect was messing up my scroll numbers, since it actually scrolls past the document's height and updates the window variables with out-of-boundary numbers. What I had to do was check if the scrolled amount was larger than the actual document's height, like so:

$(window).scroll(
    function() {
        if ($(window).scrollTop() + $(window).height() > $(document).height()) return;
        updateScroll(); // my own function to do my parallaxing stuff
    }
);

Calling a JavaScript function named in a variable

I'd avoid eval.

To solve this problem, you should know these things about JavaScript.

  1. Functions are first-class objects, so they can be properties of an object (in which case they are called methods) or even elements of arrays.
  2. If you aren't choosing the object a function belongs to, it belongs to the global scope. In the browser, that means you're hanging it on the object named "window," which is where globals live.
  3. Arrays and objects are intimately related. (Rumor is they might even be the result of incest!) You can often substitute using a dot . rather than square brackets [], or vice versa.

Your problem is a result of considering the dot manner of reference rather than the square bracket manner.

So, why not something like,

window["functionName"]();

That's assuming your function lives in the global space. If you've namespaced, then:

myNameSpace["functionName"]();

Avoid eval, and avoid passing a string in to setTimeout and setInterval. I write a lot of JS, and I NEVER need eval. "Needing" eval comes from not knowing the language deeply enough. You need to learn about scoping, context, and syntax. If you're ever stuck with an eval, just ask--you'll learn quickly.

Create an array or List of all dates between two dates

I know this is an old post but try using an extension method:

    public static IEnumerable<DateTime> Range(this DateTime startDate, DateTime endDate)
    {
        return Enumerable.Range(0, (endDate - startDate).Days + 1).Select(d => startDate.AddDays(d));
    }

and use it like this

    var dates = new DateTime(2000, 1, 1).Range(new DateTime(2000, 1, 31));

Feel free to choose your own dates, you don't have to restrict yourself to January 2000.

JavaScript moving element in the DOM

Sorry for bumping this thread I stumbled over the "swap DOM-elements" problem and played around a bit

The result is a jQuery-native "solution" which seems to be really pretty (unfortunately i don't know whats happening at the jQuery internals when doing this)

The Code:

$('#element1').insertAfter($('#element2'));

The jQuery documentation says that insertAfter() moves the element and doesn't clone it

How can I load the contents of a text file into a batch file variable?

Use for, something along the lines of:

set content=
for /f "delims=" %%i in ('filename') do set content=%content% %%i

Maybe you’ll have to do setlocal enabledelayedexpansion and/or use !content! rather than %content%. I can’t test, as I don’t have any MS Windows nearby (and I wish you the same :-).

The best batch-file-black-magic-reference I know of is at http://www.rsdn.ru/article/winshell/batanyca.xml. If you don’t know Russian, you still could make some use of the code snippets provided.

Non greedy (reluctant) regex matching in sed?

Non-greedy solution for more than a single character

This thread is really old but I assume people still needs it. Lets say you want to kill everything till the very first occurrence of HELLO. You cannot say [^HELLO]...

So a nice solution involves two steps, assuming that you can spare a unique word that you are not expecting in the input, say top_sekrit.

In this case we can:

s/HELLO/top_sekrit/ #will only replace the very first occurrence
s/.*top_sekrit// #kill everything till end of the first HELLO

Of course, with a simpler input you could use a smaller word, or maybe even a single character.

Why are there no ++ and --? operators in Python?

Other answers have described why it's not needed for iterators, but sometimes it is useful when assigning to increase a variable in-line, you can achieve the same effect using tuples and multiple assignment:

b = ++a becomes:

a,b = (a+1,)*2

and b = a++ becomes:

a,b = a+1, a

Python 3.8 introduces the assignment := operator, allowing us to achievefoo(++a) with

foo(a:=a+1)

foo(a++) is still elusive though.

initialize a const array in a class initializer in C++

Like the others said, ISO C++ doesn't support that. But you can workaround it. Just use std::vector instead.

// fill a

public:
  C():v(a, a+N) {}
};

How to replace (null) values with 0 output in PIVOT

I have encountered similar problem. The root cause is that (use your scenario for my case), in the #temp table, there is no record for
a. CLASS=RICE and STATE=TX
b. CLASS=VEGIE and (STATE=AZ or STATE=CA)
So, when MSSQL does pivot for no record, MSSQL always shows NULL for MAX, SUM, ... (aggregate functions)

None of above solutions (IsNull([AZ], 0)) works for me. But I do get ideas from these solutions. Thanks.

Sorry, it really depends on the #TEMP table. I can only provide some suggestions.
1. Make sure #TEMP table have records for below condition, even Data is null.
a. CLASS=RICE and STATE=TX
b. CLASS=VEGIE and (STATE=AZ or STATE=CA) You may need to use cartesian product: select A.*, B.* from A, B 2. In the select query for #temp, if you need to join any table with WHERE, then would better put where inside another sub select query. (Goal is 1.)
3. Use isnull(DATA, 0) in #TEMP table.
4. Before pivot, make sure you have achieved Goal 1.

I can't give an answer to the orginal question, since there is no enough info for #temp table. I have pasted my code as example here, hope this will help others.

Adding Lombok plugin to IntelliJ project

For me it didn't work after doing all of the steps suggested in the question and in the top answer. Initially the import didn't work, and then when I restarted IntelliJ, I got these messages from the Gradle Plugin:

Gradle DSL method not found: 'annotationProcessor()'
Possible causes:<ul><li>The project 'wq-handler-service' may be using a version of the Android Gradle plug-in that does not contain the method (e.g. 'testCompile' was added in 1.1.0).
Upgrade plugin to version 2.3.2 and sync project</li><li>The project 'wq-handler-service' may be using a version of Gradle that does not contain the method.
Open Gradle wrapper file</li><li>The build file may be missing a Gradle plugin.
Apply Gradle plugin</li>

This was weird because I don't develop for Android, just using IntelliJ for Mac OS.

To be fair, my build.gradle file had these lines in the dependencies section, which I copied from a colleague:

compileOnly group: 'org.projectlombok', name: 'lombok', version: '1.16.20'
annotationProcessor group: 'org.projectlombok', name: 'lombok', version: '1.16.20'

After checking versions, the only thing that completely solved my problem was adding the below to the plugins section of build.gradle, which I found on this page:

id 'net.ltgt.apt' version '0.15'

Looks like it's a

Gradle plugin making it easier/safer to use Java annotation processors

how do I insert a column at a specific column index in pandas?

You could try to extract columns as list, massage this as you want, and reindex your dataframe:

>>> cols = df.columns.tolist()
>>> cols = [cols[-1]]+cols[:-1] # or whatever change you need
>>> df.reindex(columns=cols)

   n  l  v
0  0  a  1
1  0  b  2
2  0  c  1
3  0  d  2

EDIT: this can be done in one line ; however, this looks a bit ugly. Maybe some cleaner proposal may come...

>>> df.reindex(columns=['n']+df.columns[:-1].tolist())

   n  l  v
0  0  a  1
1  0  b  2
2  0  c  1
3  0  d  2

What is the difference between jQuery: text() and html() ?

I think that the difference is to insert html tag in text() you html tag do not functions

$('#output').html('You are registered'+'<br>'  +'  '
                     + 'Mister'+'  ' + name+'   ' + sourname ); }

output :

You are registered <br> Mister name sourname

replacing text() with html()

output

You are registered
Mister name sourname

then the tag <br> works in html()

Access-Control-Allow-Origin and Angular.js $http

Writing this middleware might help !

app.use(function(req, res, next) {
res.header("Access-Control-Allow-Origin", "*");
res.header("Access-Control-Allow-Headers", "Origin, X-Requested-With,     Content-Type, Accept");
next();
});

Removing a Fragment from the back stack

you show fragment in a container (with id= fragmentcontainer) so you remove fragment with:

 Fragment fragment = getSupportFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.fragmentContainer);
            fragmentTransaction.remove(fragment);
            fragmentTransaction.addToBackStack(null);
            fragmentTransaction.commit();

HTML input - name vs. id

An interesting case of using the same name: input elements of type checkbox like this:

<input id="fruit-1" type="checkbox" value="apple"  name="myfruit[]">
<input id="fruit-2" type="checkbox" value="orange" name="myfruit[]">

At least if the response is processed by PHP, if you check both boxes, your POST data will show:

$myfruit[0] == 'apple' && $myfruit[1] == 'orange'

I don't know if that sort of array construction would happen with other server-side languages, or if the value of the name attribute is only treated as a string of characters, and it's a fluke of PHP syntax that a 0-based array gets built based on the order of the data in the POST response, which is just:

myfruit[]       apple
myfruit[]       orange

Can't do that kind of trick with ids. A couple of answers in What are valid values for the id attribute in HTML? appear to quote the spec for HTML 4 (though they don't give a citation):

ID and NAME tokens must begin with a letter ([A-Za-z]) and may be followed by any number of letters, digits ([0-9]), hyphens ("-"), underscores ("_"), colons (":"), and periods (".").

So the characters [ and ] are not valid in either ids or names in HTML4 (they would be okay in HTML5). But as with so many things html, just because it's not valid doesn't mean it won't work or isn't extremely useful.

c++ array - expression must have a constant value

When creating an array like that, its size must be constant. If you want a dynamically sized array, you need to allocate memory for it on the heap and you'll also need to free it with delete when you're done:

//allocate the array
int** arr = new int*[row];
for(int i = 0; i < row; i++)
    arr[i] = new int[col];

// use the array

//deallocate the array
for(int i = 0; i < row; i++)
    delete[] arr[i];
delete[] arr;

If you want a fixed size, then they must be declared const:

const int row = 8;
const int col = 8;
int arr[row][col];

Also,

int [row][col];

doesn't even provide a variable name.

Evidence that std::unordered_map uses a hash map in GCC stdlibc++ 6.4

This was mentioned at: https://stackoverflow.com/a/3578247/895245 but in the following answer: What data structure is inside std::map in C++? I have given further evidence of such for the GCC stdlibc++ 6.4 implementation by:

  • GDB step debugging into the class
  • performance characteristic analysis

Here is a preview of the performance characteristic graph described in that answer:

How to use a custom class and hash function with unordered_map

This answer nails it: C++ unordered_map using a custom class type as the key

Excerpt: equality:

struct Key
{
  std::string first;
  std::string second;
  int         third;

  bool operator==(const Key &other) const
  { return (first == other.first
            && second == other.second
            && third == other.third);
  }
};

Hash function:

namespace std {

  template <>
  struct hash<Key>
  {
    std::size_t operator()(const Key& k) const
    {
      using std::size_t;
      using std::hash;
      using std::string;

      // Compute individual hash values for first,
      // second and third and combine them using XOR
      // and bit shifting:

      return ((hash<string>()(k.first)
               ^ (hash<string>()(k.second) << 1)) >> 1)
               ^ (hash<int>()(k.third) << 1);
    }
  };

}

Disable back button in android

Apart form these two methods from answer above.

onBackPressed() (API Level 5, Android 2.0)

onKeyDown() (API Level 1, Android 1.0)

You can also override the dispatchKeyEvent()(API Level 1, Android 1.0) like this,

dispatchKeyEvent() (API Level 1, Android 1.0)

@Override
public boolean dispatchKeyEvent(KeyEvent event) {
    // TODO Auto-generated method stub
    if (event.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.KEYCODE_BACK) {
        return true;
    }
    return super.dispatchKeyEvent(event);
}

Get the content of a sharepoint folder with Excel VBA

I messed around with this problem for a bit, and found a very simple, 2-line solution, simply replacing the 'http' and all the forward slashes like this:

myFilePath = replace(myFilePath, "/", "\")
myFilePath = replace(myFilePath, "http:", "")

It might not work for everybody, but it worked for me

If you are using a secure site (or wish to cater for both) you may wish to add the following line:

myFilePath = replace(myFilePath, "https:", "")

Multiple scenarios @RequestMapping produces JSON/XML together with Accept or ResponseEntity

Using Accept header is really easy to get the format json or xml from the REST service.

This is my Controller, take a look produces section.

@RequestMapping(value = "properties", produces = {MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON_VALUE, MediaType.APPLICATION_XML_VALUE}, method = RequestMethod.GET)
    public UIProperty getProperties() {
        return uiProperty;
    }

In order to consume the REST service we can use the code below where header can be MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON_VALUE or MediaType.APPLICATION_XML_VALUE

HttpHeaders headers = new HttpHeaders();
headers.add("Accept", header);

HttpEntity entity = new HttpEntity(headers);

RestTemplate restTemplate = new RestTemplate();
ResponseEntity<String> response = restTemplate.exchange("http://localhost:8080/properties", HttpMethod.GET, entity,String.class);
return response.getBody();

Edit 01:

In order to work with application/xml, add this dependency

<dependency>
    <groupId>com.fasterxml.jackson.dataformat</groupId>
    <artifactId>jackson-dataformat-xml</artifactId>
</dependency>

How to remove all listeners in an element?

Here's a function that is also based on cloneNode, but with an option to clone only the parent node and move all the children (to preserve their event listeners):

function recreateNode(el, withChildren) {
  if (withChildren) {
    el.parentNode.replaceChild(el.cloneNode(true), el);
  }
  else {
    var newEl = el.cloneNode(false);
    while (el.hasChildNodes()) newEl.appendChild(el.firstChild);
    el.parentNode.replaceChild(newEl, el);
  }
}

Remove event listeners on one element:

recreateNode(document.getElementById("btn"));

Remove event listeners on an element and all of its children:

recreateNode(document.getElementById("list"), true);

If you need to keep the object itself and therefore can't use cloneNode, then you have to wrap the addEventListener function and track the listener list by yourself, like in this answer.

MongoDB distinct aggregation

SQL Query: (group by & count of distinct)

select city,count(distinct(emailId)) from TransactionDetails group by city;

Equivalent mongo query would look like this:

{$project:{"CITY":1,uniqueCustomerCount:{$size:"$uniqueCount"}} }
]);

How to access my localhost from another PC in LAN?

Actualy you don't need an internet connection to use ip address. Each computer in LAN has an internal IP address you can discover by runing

ipconfig /all

in cmd.

You can use the ip address of the server (probabily something like 192.168.0.x or 10.0.0.x) to access the website remotely.

If you found the ip and still cannot access the website, it means WAMP is not configured to respond to that name ( what did you call me? 192.168.0.3? That's not my name. I'm Localhost ) and you have to modify ....../apache/config/httpd.conf

How do I check if an object's type is a particular subclass in C++?

I don't know if I understand your problem correctly, so let me restate it in my own words...

Problem: Given classes B and D, determine if D is a subclass of B (or vice-versa?)

Solution: Use some template magic! Okay, seriously you need to take a look at LOKI, an excellent template meta-programming library produced by the fabled C++ author Andrei Alexandrescu.

More specifically, download LOKI and include header TypeManip.h from it in your source code then use the SuperSubclass class template as follows:

if(SuperSubClass<B,D>::value)
{
...
}

According to documentation, SuperSubClass<B,D>::value will be true if B is a public base of D, or if B and D are aliases of the same type.

i.e. either D is a subclass of B or D is the same as B.

I hope this helps.

edit:

Please note the evaluation of SuperSubClass<B,D>::value happens at compile time unlike some methods which use dynamic_cast, hence there is no penalty for using this system at runtime.

How can I submit form on button click when using preventDefault()?

Ok, first e.preventDefault(); it's not a Jquery element, it's a method of javascript, now what it's true it's if you add this method you avoid the submit the event, now what you could do it's send the form by ajax something like this

$('#subscription_order_form').submit(function(e){
    $.ajax({
     url: $(this).attr('action'),
     data : $(this).serialize(),
     success : function (data){

      }
   });
    e.preventDefault();
});

PHP fopen() Error: failed to open stream: Permission denied

You may need to change the permissions as an administrator. Open up terminal on your Mac and then open the directory that markers.xml is located in. Then type:

sudo chmod 777 markers.xml

You may be prompted for a password. Also, it could be the directories that don't allow full access. I'm not familiar with WordPress, so you may have to change the permission of each directory moving upward to the mysite directory.

What does it mean to inflate a view from an xml file?

Because we make UI into XML but view objects is what we display so we somehow need to convert xml into view objects so inflating means we are converting xml into view objects so that it can be displayed, for this we need a service called layout inflator service and give it an xml and it will be convert for you.

Configure WAMP server to send email

You need a SMTP server to send your mail. If you have one available which does not require SMTP authentification (maybe your ISP's?) just edit the 'SMTP' ([mail function]) setting in your php.ini file.

If this is no option because your SMTP server requires authentification you won't be able to use the internal mail() function and have to use some 3rd party class which supports smtp auth. e.g. http://pear.php.net/package/Mail/

Postgres: check if array field contains value?

With ANY operator you can search for only one value.

For example,

select * from mytable where 'Book' = ANY(pub_types);

If you want to search multiple values, you can use @> operator.

For example,

select * from mytable where pub_types @> '{"Journal", "Book"}';

You can specify in which ever order you like.

Update Rows in SSIS OLEDB Destination

Use Lookupstage to decide whether to insert or update. Check this link for more info - http://beingoyen.blogspot.com/2010/03/ssis-how-to-update-instead-of-insert.html

Steps to do update:

  1. Drag OLEDB Command [instead of oledb destination]
  2. Go to properties window
  3. Under Custom properties select SQLCOMMAND and insert update command ex:

    UPDATE table1 SET col1 = ?, col2 = ? where id = ?

  4. map columns in exact order from source to output as in update command

Confusion: @NotNull vs. @Column(nullable = false) with JPA and Hibernate

The most recent versions of hibernate JPA provider applies the bean validation constraints (JSR 303) like @NotNull to DDL by default (thanks to hibernate.validator.apply_to_ddl property defaults to true). But there is no guarantee that other JPA providers do or even have the ability to do that.

You should use bean validation annotations like @NotNull to ensure, that bean properties are set to a none-null value, when validating java beans in the JVM (this has nothing to do with database constraints, but in most situations should correspond to them).

You should additionally use the JPA annotation like @Column(nullable = false) to give the jpa provider hints to generate the right DDL for creating table columns with the database constraints you want. If you can or want to rely on a JPA provider like Hibernate, which applies the bean validation constraints to DDL by default, then you can omit them.

How to configure SSL certificates with Charles Web Proxy and the latest Android Emulator on Windows?

To remotely capture http or https traffic with charles you will need to do the following:

HOST - Machine running Charles and hosting the proxy CLIENT – User’s machine generating the traffic you will capture

Host Machine

  1. Install fully licensed charles version
  2. Proxy -> Proxy Settings -> check “Enable Transparent HTTP Proxying”
  3. Proxy -> SSL Proxying Settings -> check “enable SSL Proxying”
  4. Proxy -> SSL Proxying Settings -> click Add button and input * in both fields
  5. Proxy -> Access Control Settings -> Add your local subnet (ex: 192.168.2.0/24) to authorize all machines on your local network to use the proxy from another machine
  6. It might be advisable to set up the “auto save tool” in charles, this will auto save and rotate the charles logs.

Client Machine:

  1. Install and permanently accept/trust the charles SSL certificate
    http://www.charlesproxy.com/documentation/using-charles/ssl-certificates/
  2. Configure IE, Firefox, and Chrome to use the socket charles is hosting the proxy on (ex: 192.168.1.100:8888)

When I tested this out I picked up two lines of a Facebook HTTPS chat (one was a line TO someone, and the other FROM)

you can also capture android emulator traffic this way if you start the emulator with:

emulator -avd <avd name> -http-proxy http://local_ip:8888/

Where LOCAL_IP is the IP address of your computer, not 127.0.0.1 as that is the IP address of the emulated phone.

How to get cookie's expire time

It seems there's a list of all cookies sent to browser in array returned by php's headers_list() which among other data returns "Set-Cookie" elements as follows:

Set-Cookie: cooke_name=cookie_value; expires=expiration_time; Max-Age=age; path=path; domain=domain

This way you can also get deleted ones since their value is deleted:

Set-Cookie: cooke_name=deleted; expires=expiration_time; Max-Age=age; path=path; domain=domain

From there on it's easy to retrieve expiration time or age for particular cookie. Keep in mind though that this array is probably available only AFTER actual call to setcookie() has been made so it's valid for script that has already finished it's job. I haven't tested this in some other way(s) since this worked just fine for me.

This is rather old topic and I'm not sure if this is valid for all php builds but I thought it might be helpfull.

Using FolderBrowserDialog in WPF application

You need to add a reference to System.Windows.Forms.dll, then use the System.Windows.Forms.FolderBrowserDialog class.

Adding using WinForms = System.Windows.Forms; will be helpful.

How can I get double quotes into a string literal?

Thankfully, with C++11 there is also the more pleasing approach of using raw string literals.

printf("She said \"time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana\".");

Becomes:

printf(R"(She said "time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana".)");

With respect to the addition of brackets after the opening quote, and before the closing quote, note that they can be almost any combination of up to 16 characters, helping avoid the situation where the combination is present in the string itself. Specifically:

any member of the basic source character set except: space, the left parenthesis (, the right parenthesis ), the backslash , and the control characters representing horizontal tab, vertical tab, form feed, and newline" (N3936 §2.14.5 [lex.string] grammar) and "at most 16 characters" (§2.14.5/2)

How much clearer it makes this short strings might be debatable, but when used on longer formatted strings like HTML or JSON, it's unquestionably far clearer.

How do I select last 5 rows in a table without sorting?

Try this, if you don't have a primary key or identical column:

select [Stu_Id],[Student_Name] ,[City] ,[Registered],
       RowNum = row_number() OVER (ORDER BY (SELECT 0))
from student
ORDER BY RowNum desc

Label python data points on plot

How about print (x, y) at once.

from matplotlib import pyplot as plt

fig = plt.figure()
ax = fig.add_subplot(111)

A = -0.75, -0.25, 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0
B = 0.73, 0.97, 1.0, 0.97, 0.88, 0.73, 0.54

plt.plot(A,B)
for xy in zip(A, B):                                       # <--
    ax.annotate('(%s, %s)' % xy, xy=xy, textcoords='data') # <--

plt.grid()
plt.show()
