LEFT INNER JOIN vs. LEFT OUTER JOIN - Why does the OUTER take longer?

This is because the LEFT OUTER Join is doing more work than an INNER Join BEFORE sending the results back.

The Inner Join looks for all records where the ON statement is true (So when it creates a new table, it only puts in records that match the m.SubID = a.SubID). Then it compares those results to your WHERE statement (Your last modified time).

The Left Outer Join...Takes all of the records in your first table. If the ON statement is not true (m.SubID does not equal a.SubID), it simply NULLS the values in the second table's column for that recordset.

The reason you get the same number of results at the end is probably coincidence due to the WHERE clause that happens AFTER all of the copying of records.

BTW, I spent hours trying to get this to work. Found the solution in some obscure comments section. It was buggy and wouldn't work in some tags. Didn't work in the body. It finally worked when I put it in html{} in the CSS file.

Read values into a shell variable from a pipe

The first attempt was pretty close. This variation should work:

echo "hello world" | { test=$(< /dev/stdin); echo "test=$test"; };

and the output is:

test=hello world

You need braces after the pipe to enclose the assignment to test and the echo.

Without the braces, the assignment to test (after the pipe) is in one shell, and the echo "test=$test" is in a separate shell which doesn't know about that assignment. That's why you were getting "test=" in the output instead of "test=hello world".

Where does Chrome store cookies?

The answer is due to the fact that Google Chrome uses an SQLite file to save cookies. It resides under:

C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\

inside Cookies file. (which is an SQLite database file)

So it's not a file stored on hard drive but a row in an SQLite database file which can be read by a third party program such as: SQLite Database Browser

Cocoa: What's the difference between the frame and the bounds?

The bounds of an UIView is the rectangle, expressed as a location (x,y) and size (width,height) relative to its own coordinate system (0,0).

The frame of an UIView is the rectangle, expressed as a location (x,y) and size (width,height) relative to the superview it is contained within.

So, imagine a view that has a size of 100x100 (width x height) positioned at 25,25 (x,y) of its superview. The following code prints out this view's bounds and frame:

So, we can see that in both cases, the width and the height of the view is the same regardless of whether we are looking at the bounds or frame. What is different is the x,y positioning of the view. In the case of the bounds, the x and y coordinates are at 0,0 as these coordinates are relative to the view itself. However, the frame x and y coordinates are relative to the position of the view within the parent view (which earlier we said was at 25,25).

When saving, how can you check if a field has changed?

The optimal solution is probably one that does not include an additional database read operation prior to saving the model instance, nor any further django-library. This is why laffuste's solutions is preferable. In the context of an admin site, one can simply override the save_model-method, and invoke the form's has_changed method there, just as in Sion's answer above. You arrive at something like this, drawing on Sion's example setting but using changed_data to get every possible change:

.htaccess, order allow, deny, deny from all: confused?

This is a quite confusing way of using Apache configuration directives.

Technically, the first bit is equivalent to

Allow From All

This is because Order Deny,Allow makes the Deny directive evaluated before the Allow Directives. In this case, Deny and Allow conflict with each other, but Allow, being the last evaluated will match any user, and access will be granted.

Now, just to make things clear, this kind of configuration is BAD and should be avoided at all cost, because it borders undefined behaviour.

The Limit sections define which HTTP methods have access to the directory containing the .htaccess file.

Here, GET and POST methods are allowed access, and PUT and DELETE methods are denied access. Here's a link explaining what the various HTTP methods are: http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec9.html

However, it's more than often useless to use these limitations as long as you don't have custom CGI scripts or Apache modules that directly handle the non-standard methods (PUT and DELETE), since by default, Apache does not handle them at all.

It must also be noted that a few other methods exist that can also be handled by Limit, namely CONNECT, OPTIONS, PATCH, PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, MKCOL, COPY, MOVE, LOCK, and UNLOCK.

The last bit is also most certainly useless, since any correctly configured Apache installation contains the following piece of configuration (for Apache 2.2 and earlier):

If you are working with robot framework RIDE. Then you can download Chromedriver.exe from its official website and keep this .exe file in C:\Python27\Scripts directory. Now mention this path as your environment variable eg. C:\Python27\Scripts\chromedriver.exe.

Restart your computer and run same test case again. You will not get this problem again.

Case insensitive string as HashMap key

One approach is to create a custom subclass of the Apache Commons AbstractHashedMap class, overriding the hash and isEqualKeys methods to perform case insensitive hashing and comparison of keys. (Note - I've never tried this myself ...)

This avoids the overhead of creating new objects each time you need to do a map lookup or update. And the common Map operations should O(1) ... just like a regular HashMap.

And if you are prepared to accept the implementation choices they have made, the Apache Commons CaseInsensitiveMap does the work of customizing / specializing AbstractHashedMap for you.


But if O(logN) get and put operations are acceptable, a TreeMap with a case insensitive string comparator is an option; e.g. using String.CASE_INSENSITIVE_ORDER.

And if you don't mind creating a new temporary String object each time you do a put or get, then Vishal's answer is just fine. (Though, I note that you wouldn't be preserving the original case of the keys if you did that ...)

MySQL integer field is returned as string in PHP

I like Chad's answer, especially when the query results will be passed on to javascript in a browser. Javascript deals cleanly with numeric like entities as numbers but requires extra work to deal with numeric like entities as strings. i.e. must use parseInt or parseFloat on them.

Building on Chad's solution I use this and it is often exactly what I need and creates structures that can be JSON encoded for easy dealing with in javascript.

Best practices for SQL varchar column length

Whenever I set up a new SQL table I feel the same way about 2^n being more "even"... but to sum up the answers here, there is no significant impact on storage space simply by defining varchar(2^n) or even varchar(MAX).

That said, you should still anticipate the potential implications on storage and performance when setting a high varchar() limit. For example, let's say you create a varchar(MAX) column to hold product descriptions with full-text indexing. If 99% of descriptions are only 500 characters long, and then suddenly you get somebody who replaces said descriptions with wikipedia articles, you may notice unanticipated significant storage and performance hits.

Another thing to consider from Bill Karwin:

There's one possible performance impact: in MySQL, temporary tables and MEMORY tables store a VARCHAR column as a fixed-length column, padded out to its maximum length. If you design VARCHAR columns much larger than the greatest size you need, you will consume more memory than you have to. This affects cache efficiency, sorting speed, etc.

Basically, just come up with reasonable business constraints and error on a slightly larger size. As @onedaywhen pointed out, family names in UK are usually between 1-35 characters. If you decide to make it varchar(64), you're not really going to hurt anything... unless you're storing this guy's family name that's said to be up to 666 characters long. In that case, maybe varchar(1028) makes more sense.

And in case it's helpful, here's what varchar 2^5 through 2^10 might look like if filled:

list.clear() vs list = new ArrayList<Integer>();

list.clear() is going to keep the same ArrayList but the same memory allocation. list = new ArrayList<int>(); is going to allocate new memory for your ArrayList.

The big difference is that ArrayLists will expand dynamically as you need more space. Therefore, if you call list.clear() you will still, potentially, have a large amount of memory allocated for an ArrayList that might not be needed.

That said list.clear() will be faster but if memory maters you might want to allocate a new ArrayList.

Static extension methods

In short, no, you can't.

Long answer, extension methods are just syntactic sugar. IE:

If you have an extension method on string let's say:

public static string SomeStringExtension(this string s)

}

When you then call it:

myString.SomeStringExtension();

The compiler just turns it into:

ExtensionClass.SomeStringExtension(myString);

So as you can see, there's no way to do that for static methods.

And another thing just dawned on me: what would really be the point of being able to add static methods on existing classes? You can just have your own helper class that does the same thing, so what's really the benefit in being able to do:

Bool.Parse(..)

vs.

Helper.ParseBool(..);

Doesn't really bring much to the table...

How to determine when Fragment becomes visible in ViewPager

setUserVisibleHint() gets called sometimes before onCreateView() and sometimes after which causes trouble.

To overcome this you need to check isResumed() as well inside setUserVisibleHint() method. But in this case i realized setUserVisibleHint() gets called only if Fragment is resumed and visible, NOT when Created.

So if you want to update something when Fragment is visible, put your update function both in onCreate() and setUserVisibleHint():

Then when you swipe to 2nd tab, myUIUpdate() from if (visible && isResumed()) is called and as a result,myUIUpdate() may get called twice in a second.

The other problem is !visible in setUserVisibleHint gets called both 1) when you go out of fragment screen and 2) before it is created, when you switch to fragment screen first time.

Explanation:

fragmentResume,fragmentVisible: Makes sure myUIUpdate() in onCreateView() is called only when fragment is created and visible, not on resume. It also solves problem when you are at 1st tab, 2nd tab is created even if it is not visible. This solves that and checks if fragment screen is visible when onCreate.

fragmentOnCreated: Makes sure fragment is not visible, and not called when you create fragment first time. So now this if clause only gets called when you swipe out of fragment.

Update You can put all this code in BaseFragment code like this and override method.

Even using the sqlite3.Row class-- you still can't use string formatting in the form of:

In order to get past this, I use a helper function that takes the row and converts to a dictionary. I only use this when the dictionary object is preferable to the Row object (e.g. for things like string formatting where the Row object doesn't natively support the dictionary API as well). But use the Row object all other times.

How does @synchronized lock/unlock in Objective-C?

In Objective-C, a @synchronized block handles locking and unlocking (as well as possible exceptions) automatically for you. The runtime dynamically essentially generates an NSRecursiveLock that is associated with the object you're synchronizing on. This Apple documentation explains it in more detail. This is why you're not seeing the log messages from your NSLock subclass — the object you synchronize on can be anything, not just an NSLock.

Basically, @synchronized (...) is a convenience construct that streamlines your code. Like most simplifying abstractions, it has associated overhead (think of it as a hidden cost), and it's good to be aware of that, but raw performance is probably not the supreme goal when using such constructs anyway.

Constantly print Subprocess output while process is running

None of the answers here addressed all of my needs.

  1. No threads for stdout (no Queues, etc, either)
  2. Non-blocking as I need to check for other things going on
  3. Use PIPE as I needed to do multiple things, e.g. stream output, write to a log file and return a string copy of the output.

A little background: I am using a ThreadPoolExecutor to manage a pool of threads, each launching a subprocess and running them concurrency. (In Python2.7, but this should work in newer 3.x as well). I don't want to use threads just for output gathering as I want as many available as possible for other things (a pool of 20 processes would be using 40 threads just to run; 1 for the process thread and 1 for stdout...and more if you want stderr I guess)

I'm stripping back a lot of exception and such here so this is based on code that works in production. Hopefully I didn't ruin it in the copy and paste. Also, feedback very much welcome!

I'm sure there is overhead being added here but it is not a concern in my case. Functionally it does what I need. The only thing I haven't solved is why this works perfectly for log messages but I see some print messages show up later and all at once.

In my case I was using a toolchain on Ubuntu 12.04 that was built on Ubuntu 10.04 (requires GCC 4.1 to build). As most of the libraries have moved to multiarch dirs, it couldn't find ld.so. So, make a symlink for it.

While converting a gray scale image to a binary image, we usually use cv2.threshold() and set a threshold value manually. Sometimes to get a decent result we opt for Otsu's binarization.

I have a small hack I came across while reading some blog posts.

  1. Convert your color (RGB) image to gray scale.
  2. Obtain the median of the gray scale image.
  3. Choose a threshold value either 33% above the median

Why 33%?

This is because 33% works for most of the images/data-set.

You can also work out the same approach by replacing median with the mean.

Approach 2

Another approach would be to take an x number of standard deviations (std) from the mean, either on the positive or negative side; and set a threshold. So it could be one of the following:

  • th1 = mean - (x * std)
  • th2 = mean + (x * std)

Note: Before applying threshold it is advisable to enhance the contrast of the gray scale image locally (See CLAHE).

How to export a Vagrant virtual machine to transfer it

None of the above answers worked for me. I have been 2 days working out the way to migrate a Vagrant + VirtualBox Machine from a computer to another... It's possible!

First, you need to understand that the virtual machine is separated from your sync / shared folder. So when you pack your machine you're packing it without your files, but with the databases.

What you need to do:

1- Open the CMD of your computer 1 host machine (Command line. Open it as Adminitrator with the right button -> "Run as administrator") and go to your vagrant installed files. On my case: C:/VVV You will see your Vagrantfile an also these folders:

/config/
/database/
/log/
/provision/
/www/
Vagrantfile
...

The /www/ folder is where I have my Sync Folder with my development domains. You may have your sync folder in other place, just be sure to understand what you are doing. Also /config and /database are sync folders.

2- run this command: vagrant package --vagrantfile Vagrantfile

(This command does a package of your virtual machine using you Vagrantfile configuration.)

Here's what you can read on the Vagrant documentation about the command:

A common misconception is that the --vagrantfile option will package a Vagrantfile that is used when vagrant init is used with this box. This is not the case. Instead, a Vagrantfile is loaded and read as part of the Vagrant load process when the box is used. For more information, read about the Vagrantfile load order.

When finnished, you will have a package.box file.

3- Copy all these files (/config, /database, Vagrantfile, package.box, etc.) and paste them on your Computer 2 just where you want to install your virtual machine (on my case D:/VVV).

Now you have a copy of everything you need on your computer 2 host.

4- run this: vagrant box add package.box --name VVV

(The --name is used to name your virtual machine. On my case it's named VVV) (You can use --force if you already have a virtual machine with this name and want to overwrite it. (Use carefully !))

This will unpack your new vagrant Virtual machine.

5- When finnished, run: vagrant up

The machine will install and you should see it on the "Oracle virtual machine box manager". If you cannot see the virtual machine, try running the Oracle VM box as administrator (right click -> Run as administrator)

You now may have everything ok but remember to see if your hosts are as you expected:

c:/windows/system32/hosts

6- Maybe it's a good idea to copy your host file from your Computer 1 to your Computer 2. Or copy the lines you need. In my case these are the hosts I need:

192.168.50.4 test.dev
192.168.50.4 vvv.dev
...

Where the 192.168.50.4 is the IP of my Virtual machine and test.dev and vvv.dev are developing hosts.

Some particularities of my case that you may find:

When I ran vagrant up, there was a problem with mysql, it wasn't working. I had to run on the Virtual server (right click on the oracle virtual machine -> Show console): apt-get install mysql-server

After this, I ran again vagrant up and everything was working but without data on the databases. So I did a mysqldump all-tables from the Computer 1 and upload them to Computer 2.

OTHER NOTES: My virtual machine is not exactly on Computer 1 and Computer 2. For example, I made some time ago internal configuration to use NFS (to speed up the server sync folders) and I needed to run again this command on the Computer 2 host: vagrant plugin install vagrant-winnfsd

What is the difference between user and kernel modes in operating systems?

These are two different modes in which your computer can operate. Prior to this, when computers were like a big room, if something crashes – it halts the whole computer. So computer architects decide to change it. Modern microprocessors implement in hardware at least 2 different states.

User mode:

  • mode where all user programs execute. It does not have access to RAM and hardware. The reason for this is because if all programs ran in kernel mode, they would be able to overwrite each other’s memory. If it needs to access any of these features – it makes a call to the underlying API. Each process started by windows except of system process runs in user mode.

Kernel mode:

  • mode where all kernel programs execute (different drivers). It has access to every resource and underlying hardware. Any CPU instruction can be executed and every memory address can be accessed. This mode is reserved for drivers which operate on the lowest level

How the switch occurs.

The switch from user mode to kernel mode is not done automatically by CPU. CPU is interrupted by interrupts (timers, keyboard, I/O). When interrupt occurs, CPU stops executing the current running program, switch to kernel mode, executes interrupt handler. I'm not sure what you're going for here--by the time jQuery(document).ready() has executed, it has already loaded, and thus document's load event will already have been called. Attaching the load event handler at this point will have no effect and it will never be called. If you're attempting to alert "started" once the document has loaded, just put it right in the (document).ready() call, like this:

XML serialization in Java?

XStream is pretty good at serializing object to XML without much configuration and money! (it's under BSD license).

We used it in one of our project to replace the plain old java-serialization and it worked almost out of the box.

There's an alternative to the StopIteration by using next(iterator, default_value).

An important difference is that some UARTs (16550 notably) will stop receiving characters immediately if their host instructs them to set DSR to be inactive. In contrast, characters will still be received if CTS is inactive. I believe that the intention here is that DSR indicates that the device is no longer listening and so sending any further characters is pointless, while CTS indicates that a buffer is getting full; the latter allows for a certain amount of 'skid' where the flow control line changed state between the DTE sampling it and the next character being transmitted. In (relatively) later devices that support a hardware FIFO it's possible that a number of characters could be transmitted after the DCE has set CTS to be inactive.

C++ display stack trace on exception

I would like to add a standard library option (i.e. cross-platform) how to generate exception backtraces, which has become available with C++11:

Use std::nested_exception and std::throw_with_nested

This won't give you a stack unwind, but in my opinion the next best thing. It is described on StackOverflow here and here, how you can get a backtrace on your exceptions inside your code without need for a debugger or cumbersome logging, by simply writing a proper exception handler which will rethrow nested exceptions.

Since you can do this with any derived exception class, you can add a lot of information to such a backtrace! You may also take a look at my MWE on GitHub, where a backtrace would look something like this:

With Android all you need to do is to surround the iframe with a DIV and set the height on the div to document.documentElement.clientHeight. IOS, however, is a different animal. Although I have not yet tried Sharon's solution it does seem like a good solution. I did find a simpler solution but it only works with IOS 5.+.

Surround your iframe element with a DIV (lets call it scroller), set the height of the DIV and make sure that the new DIV has the following styling:

This alone will work but you will notice that in most implementations the content in the iframe goes blank when scrolling and is basically rendered useless. When there's no project, Code::Blocks only compiles and links the current file. That file, from your picture, is secrypt.cpp, which does not have a main function. In order to compile and link both source files, you'll need to do it manually or add them to the same project.

Contrary to what others are saying, using a Windows subsystem with main will still work, but there will be no console window.

Your other attempt, compiling and linking just trial.cpp, never links secrypt.cpp. This would normally result in an undefined reference to jRegister(), but you've declared the function inside main instead of calling it. Change main to:

Alternatively, an XHR request to your own server isn't that bad of a method for testing your connectivity. Considering one of the other answers state that there are too many points of failure for an XHR, if your XHR is flawed when establishing it's connection then it'll also be flawed during routine use anyhow. If your site is unreachable for any reason, then your other services running on the same servers will likely be unreachable also. That decision is up to you.

I wouldn't recommend making an XHR request to someone else's service, even google.com for that matter. Make the request to your server, or not at all.

What does it mean to be "online"?

There seems to be some confusion around what being "online" means. Consider that the internet is a bunch of networks, however sometimes you're on a VPN, without access to the internet "at-large" or the world wide web. Often companies have their own networks which have limited connectivity to other external networks, therefore you could be considered "online". Being online only entails that you are connected to a network, not the availability nor reachability of the services you are trying to connect to.

To determine if a host is reachable from your network, you could do this:

Synchronization vs Lock

If you're simply locking an object, I'd prefer to use synchronized

Example:

Lock.acquire();

Lock.release(); // Oh noes, we never release the lock!

You have to explicitly do try{} finally{} everywhere.

Whereas with synchronized, it's super clear and impossible to get wrong:

That said, Locks may be more useful for more complicated things where you can't acquire and release in such a clean manner. I would honestly prefer to avoid using bare Locks in the first place, and just go with a more sophisticated concurrency control such as a CyclicBarrier or a LinkedBlockingQueue, if they meet your needs.

I've never had a reason to use wait() or notify() but there may be some good ones.

SQL "between" not inclusive

You need to do one of these two options:

  1. Include the time component in your between condition: ... where created_at between '2013-05-01 00:00:00' and '2013-05-01 23:59:59' (not recommended... see the last paragraph)
  2. Use inequalities instead of between. Notice that then you'll have to add one day to the second value: ... where (created_at >= '2013-05-01' and created_at < '2013-05-02')

My personal preference is the second option. Also, Aaron Bertrand has a very clear explanation on why it should be used.

First off, Daniel's answer is the correct, safe option.

For the specific case of changing from SQL_ASCII to something else, you can cheat and simply poke the pg_database catalogue to reassign the database encoding. This assumes you've already stored any non-ASCII characters in the expected encoding (or that you simply haven't used any non-ASCII characters).

Then you can do:

update pg_database set encoding = pg_char_to_encoding('UTF8') where datname = 'thedb'

This will not change the collation of the database, just how the encoded bytes are converted into characters (so now length('£123') will return 4 instead of 5). If the database uses 'C' collation, there should be no change to ordering for ASCII strings. You'll likely need to rebuild any indices containing non-ASCII characters though.

Caveat emptor. Dumping and reloading provides a way to check your database content is actually in the encoding you expect, and this doesn't. And if it turns out you did have some wrongly-encoded data in the database, rescuing is going to be difficult. So if you possibly can, dump and reinitialise.

Why is Java Vector (and Stack) class considered obsolete or deprecated?

Vector synchronizes on each individual operation. That's almost never what you want to do.

Generally you want to synchronize a whole sequence of operations. Synchronizing individual operations is both less safe (if you iterate over a Vector, for instance, you still need to take out a lock to avoid anyone else changing the collection at the same time, which would cause a ConcurrentModificationException in the iterating thread) but also slower (why take out a lock repeatedly when once will be enough)?

Of course, it also has the overhead of locking even when you don't need to.

Basically, it's a very flawed approach to synchronization in most situations. As Mr Brian Henk pointed out, you can decorate a collection using the calls such as Collections.synchronizedList - the fact that Vector combines both the "resized array" collection implementation with the "synchronize every operation" bit is another example of poor design; the decoration approach gives cleaner separation of concerns.

As for a Stack equivalent - I'd look at Deque/ArrayDeque to start with.

The problem is that they're all the same exact list in memory. When you use the [x]*n syntax, what you get is a list of n many x objects, but they're all references to the same object. They're not distinct instances, rather, just n references to the same instance.

To make a list of 3 different lists, do this:

This gives you 3 separate instances of [], which is what you want

[[]]*n is similar to

l = []
x = []
for i in range(n):

While [[] for i in range(3)] is similar to:
