PHP - Get bool to echo false when false

The following code doesn t print out anything    bool val    bool false  echo  bool val    But the following code prints 1    bool val    bool true  echo  bool val    Is there a better way to print 0 or false when  bool val is false than adding an if statement

json encode will do it out-of-the-box  but it s not pretty  indented  etc    echo json encode array  whatever    gt  TRUE   somethingelse    gt  FALSE         gives       whatever  true  somethingelse  false
