On MySQL 5 7 and Ubuntu 16 04  edit the file mysql cnf     sudo nano  etc mysql conf d mysql cnf   Include the sql mode like the following and save the file    mysql  sql mode IGNORE SPACE NO ZERO IN DATE NO ZERO DATE ERROR FOR DIVISION BY ZERO NO AUTO CREATE USER NO ENGINE SUBSTITUTION   Observe that  in my case  I removed the mode STRICT TRANS TABLES and the ONLY FULL GROUP BY   Doing this  it will save the mode configuration permanently  Differently if you just update the   sql mode through MySQL  because it will reset on machine service restart   After that  to the modified configuration take in action  restart the mysql service     sudo service mysql restart   Try to access the mysql     mysql -u user name -p   If you are able to login and access MySQL console  it is ok  Great   BUT  if like me  you face the error  unknown variable sql mode   which indicates that sql mode is an option for mysqld  you will have to go back  edit the file mysql cnf again and change the  mysql  to  mysqld   Restart the MySQL service and do a last test trying to login on MySQL console  Here it is

Be careful using   SET sql mode         This actually clears all the modes currently enabled  If you don t want to mess with other settings  you ll want to do a   SELECT   sql mode    first  to get a comma-separated list of the modes enabled  then SET it to this list without the ONLY FULL GROUP BY option
