Get the selected value in a dropdown using jQuery

Question

My HTML is below  I need to get the selected value  Scheduled  using the   lt select gt  tag  How can this be done using jQuery    lt select id  availability  style  display  none   gt     lt option value  Available  gt Available lt  option gt     lt option selected  selected  value  Scheduled  gt Scheduled lt  option gt     lt option value  Unavailable  gt Unavailable lt  option gt   lt  select gt    I did a jQuery   availability   to get the select tag  but I do not know how to get the selected options  value
