Programs & Examples On #Xml dml

The XML Data Modification Language (XML DML) used Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and above to manipulate data in an XML field.

How to query for Xml values and attributes from table in SQL Server?

use value instead of query (must specify index of node to return in the XQuery as well as passing the sql data type to return as the second parameter):

select
    xt.Id
    , x.m.value( '@id[1]', 'varchar(max)' ) MetricId
from
    XmlTest xt
    cross apply xt.XmlData.nodes( '/Sqm/Metrics/Metric' ) x(m)

Excel add one hour

This may help you as well. This is a conditional statement that will fill the cell with a default date if it is empty but will subtract one hour if it is a valid date/time and put it into the cell.

=IF((Sheet1!C4)="",DATE(1999,1,1),Sheet1!C4-TIME(1,0,0))

You can also substitute TIME with DATE to add or subtract a date or time.

Google Maps how to Show city or an Area outline

so I have a solution that isn't perfect but it worked for me. Use the polygon example from Google, and use the pinpoint on Google Maps to get lat & long locations.

Calgary pinpoint

I used what I call "ocular copy & paste" where you look at the screen and then write in the numbers you want ;-)

   var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map'), {

    });

    // Define the LatLng coordinates for the polygon's path.
    var triangleCoords = [

List passed by ref - help me explain this behaviour

You are passing a reference to the list, but your aren't passing the list variable by reference - so when you call ChangeList the value of the variable (i.e. the reference - think "pointer") is copied - and changes to the value of the parameter inside ChangeList aren't seen by TestMethod.

try:

private void ChangeList(ref List<int> myList) {...}
...
ChangeList(ref myList);

This then passes a reference to the local-variable myRef (as declared in TestMethod); now, if you reassign the parameter inside ChangeList you are also reassigning the variable inside TestMethod.

How does database indexing work?

Now, let’s say that we want to run a query to find all the details of any employees who are named ‘Abc’?

SELECT * FROM Employee
WHERE Employee_Name = 'Abc'

What would happen without an index?

Database software would literally have to look at every single row in the Employee table to see if the Employee_Name for that row is ‘Abc’. And, because we want every row with the name ‘Abc’ inside it, we can not just stop looking once we find just one row with the name ‘Abc’, because there could be other rows with the name Abc. So, every row up until the last row must be searched – which means thousands of rows in this scenario will have to be examined by the database to find the rows with the name ‘Abc’. This is what is called a full table scan

How a database index can help performance

The whole point of having an index is to speed up search queries by essentially cutting down the number of records/rows in a table that need to be examined. An index is a data structure (most commonly a B- tree) that stores the values for a specific column in a table.

How does B-trees index work?

The reason B- trees are the most popular data structure for indexes is due to the fact that they are time efficient – because look-ups, deletions, and insertions can all be done in logarithmic time. And, another major reason B- trees are more commonly used is because the data that is stored inside the B- tree can be sorted. The RDBMS typically determines which data structure is actually used for an index. But, in some scenarios with certain RDBMS’s, you can actually specify which data structure you want your database to use when you create the index itself.

How does a hash table index work?

The reason hash indexes are used is because hash tables are extremely efficient when it comes to just looking up values. So, queries that compare for equality to a string can retrieve values very fast if they use a hash index.

For instance, the query we discussed earlier could benefit from a hash index created on the Employee_Name column. The way a hash index would work is that the column value will be the key into the hash table and the actual value mapped to that key would just be a pointer to the row data in the table. Since a hash table is basically an associative array, a typical entry would look something like “Abc => 0x28939", where 0x28939 is a reference to the table row where Abc is stored in memory. Looking up a value like “Abc” in a hash table index and getting back a reference to the row in memory is obviously a lot faster than scanning the table to find all the rows with a value of “Abc” in the Employee_Name column.

The disadvantages of a hash index

Hash tables are not sorted data structures, and there are many types of queries which hash indexes can not even help with. For instance, suppose you want to find out all of the employees who are less than 40 years old. How could you do that with a hash table index? Well, it’s not possible because a hash table is only good for looking up key value pairs – which means queries that check for equality

What exactly is inside a database index? So, now you know that a database index is created on a column in a table, and that the index stores the values in that specific column. But, it is important to understand that a database index does not store the values in the other columns of the same table. For example, if we create an index on the Employee_Name column, this means that the Employee_Age and Employee_Address column values are not also stored in the index. If we did just store all the other columns in the index, then it would be just like creating another copy of the entire table – which would take up way too much space and would be very inefficient.

How does a database know when to use an index? When a query like “SELECT * FROM Employee WHERE Employee_Name = ‘Abc’ ” is run, the database will check to see if there is an index on the column(s) being queried. Assuming the Employee_Name column does have an index created on it, the database will have to decide whether it actually makes sense to use the index to find the values being searched – because there are some scenarios where it is actually less efficient to use the database index, and more efficient just to scan the entire table.

What is the cost of having a database index?

It takes up space – and the larger your table, the larger your index. Another performance hit with indexes is the fact that whenever you add, delete, or update rows in the corresponding table, the same operations will have to be done to your index. Remember that an index needs to contain the same up to the minute data as whatever is in the table column(s) that the index covers.

As a general rule, an index should only be created on a table if the data in the indexed column will be queried frequently.

How do I force a DIV block to extend to the bottom of a page even if it has no content?

While it isn't as elegant as pure CSS, a small bit of javascript can help accomplish this:

<html>
<head>
<style type='text/css'>
    div {
        border: 1px solid #000000;
    }
</style>
<script type='text/javascript'>

    function expandToWindow(element) {
         var margin = 10;

         if (element.style.height < window.innerHeight) {
            element.style.height = window.innerHeight - (2 * margin)
         }
    }

</script>
</head>
<body onload='expandToWindow(document.getElementById("content"));'>
<div id='content'>Hello World</div>
</body>
</html>

Alternative to header("Content-type: text/xml");

Now I see what you are doing. You cannot send output to the screen then change the headers. If you are trying to create an XML file of map marker and download them to display, they should be in separate files.

Take this

<?php
require("database.php");
function parseToXML($htmlStr)
{
$xmlStr=str_replace('<','&lt;',$htmlStr);
$xmlStr=str_replace('>','&gt;',$xmlStr);
$xmlStr=str_replace('"','&quot;',$xmlStr);
$xmlStr=str_replace("'",'&#39;',$xmlStr);
$xmlStr=str_replace("&",'&amp;',$xmlStr);
return $xmlStr;
}
// Opens a connection to a MySQL server
$connection=mysql_connect (localhost, $username, $password);
if (!$connection) {
  die('Not connected : ' . mysql_error());
}
// Set the active MySQL database
$db_selected = mysql_select_db($database, $connection);
if (!$db_selected) {
  die ('Can\'t use db : ' . mysql_error());
}
// Select all the rows in the markers table
$query = "SELECT * FROM markers WHERE 1";
$result = mysql_query($query);
if (!$result) {
  die('Invalid query: ' . mysql_error());
}
header("Content-type: text/xml");
// Start XML file, echo parent node
echo '<markers>';
// Iterate through the rows, printing XML nodes for each
while ($row = @mysql_fetch_assoc($result)){
  // ADD TO XML DOCUMENT NODE
  echo '<marker ';
  echo 'name="' . parseToXML($row['name']) . '" ';
  echo 'address="' . parseToXML($row['address']) . '" ';
  echo 'lat="' . $row['lat'] . '" ';
  echo 'lng="' . $row['lng'] . '" ';
  echo 'type="' . $row['type'] . '" ';
  echo '/>';
}
// End XML file
echo '</markers>';
?>

and place it in phpsqlajax_genxml.php so your javascript can download the XML file. You are trying to do too many things in the same file.

MVC DateTime binding with incorrect date format

It going to be slightly different in MVC 3.

Suppose we have a controller and a view with Get method

public ActionResult DoSomething(DateTime dateTime)
{
    return View();
}

We should add ModelBinder

public class DateTimeBinder : IModelBinder
{
    #region IModelBinder Members
    public object BindModel(ControllerContext controllerContext, ModelBindingContext bindingContext)
    {
        DateTime dateTime;
        if (DateTime.TryParse(controllerContext.HttpContext.Request.QueryString["dateTime"], CultureInfo.GetCultureInfo("en-GB"), DateTimeStyles.None, out dateTime))
            return dateTime;
        //else
        return new DateTime();//or another appropriate default ;
    }
    #endregion
}

and the command in Application_Start() of Global.asax

ModelBinders.Binders.Add(typeof(DateTime), new DateTimeBinder());

How can I simulate a click to an anchor tag?

There is a simpler way to achieve it,

HTML

<a href="https://getbootstrap.com/" id="fooLinkID" target="_blank">Bootstrap is life !</a>

JavaScript

// Simulating click after 3 seconds
setTimeout(function(){
  document.getElementById('fooLinkID').click();
}, 3 * 1000);

Using plain javascript to simulate a click along with addressing the target property.

You can check working example here on jsFiddle.

Why is JsonRequestBehavior needed?

MVC defaults to DenyGet to protect you against a very specific attack involving JSON requests to improve the liklihood that the implications of allowing HTTP GET exposure are considered in advance of allowing them to occur.

This is opposed to afterwards when it might be too late.

Note: If your action method does not return sensitive data, then it should be safe to allow the get.

Further reading from my Wrox ASP.NET MVC3 book

By default, the ASP.NET MVC framework does not allow you to respond to an HTTP GET request with a JSON payload. If you need to send JSON in response to a GET, you'll need to explicitly allow the behavior by using JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet as the second parameter to the Json method. However, there is a chance a malicious user can gain access to the JSON payload through a process known as JSON Hijacking. You do not want to return sensitive information using JSON in a GET request. For more details, see Phil's post at http://haacked.com/archive/2009/06/24/json-hijacking.aspx/ or this SO post.

How to modify existing XML file with XmlDocument and XmlNode in C#

You need to do something like this:

// instantiate XmlDocument and load XML from file
XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument();
doc.Load(@"D:\test.xml");

// get a list of nodes - in this case, I'm selecting all <AID> nodes under
// the <GroupAIDs> node - change to suit your needs
XmlNodeList aNodes = doc.SelectNodes("/Equipment/DataCollections/GroupAIDs/AID");

// loop through all AID nodes
foreach (XmlNode aNode in aNodes)
{
   // grab the "id" attribute
   XmlAttribute idAttribute = aNode.Attributes["id"];

   // check if that attribute even exists...
   if (idAttribute != null)
   {
      // if yes - read its current value
      string currentValue = idAttribute.Value;

      // here, you can now decide what to do - for demo purposes,
      // I just set the ID value to a fixed value if it was empty before
      if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(currentValue))
      {
         idAttribute.Value = "515";
      }
   }
}

// save the XmlDocument back to disk
doc.Save(@"D:\test2.xml");

What exactly does the .join() method do?

Look carefully at your output:

5wlfgALGbXOahekxSs9wlfgALGbXOahekxSs5
^                 ^                 ^

I've highlighted the "5", "9", "5" of your original string. The Python join() method is a string method, and takes a list of things to join with the string. A simpler example might help explain:

>>> ",".join(["a", "b", "c"])
'a,b,c'

The "," is inserted between each element of the given list. In your case, your "list" is the string representation "595", which is treated as the list ["5", "9", "5"].

It appears that you're looking for + instead:

print array.array('c', random.sample(string.ascii_letters, 20 - len(strid)))
.tostring() + strid

Converting double to string

double.toString() should work. Not the variable type Double, but the variable itself double.

how to convert object to string in java

toString() is a debug info string. The default implementation returns the class name and the system identity hash. Collections return all elements but arrays not.

Also be aware of NullPointerException creating the log!

In this case a Arrays.toString() may help:

Object temp = data.getParameterValue("request");
String log = temp == null ? "null" : (temp.getClass().isArray() ? Arrays.toString((Object[])temp) : temp.toString());
log.info("end " + temp);

You can also use Arrays.asList():

Object temp = data.getParameterValue("request");
Object log = temp == null ? null : (temp.getClass().isArray() ? Arrays.asList((Object[])temp) : temp);
log.info("end " + temp);

This may result in a ClassCastException for primitive arrays (int[], ...).

How to use if statements in underscore.js templates?

If you prefer shorter if else statement, you can use this shorthand:

<%= typeof(id)!== 'undefined' ?  id : '' %>

It means display the id if is valid and blank if it wasn't.

How can I install a package with go get?

Command go

Download and install packages and dependencies

Usage:

go get [-d] [-f] [-t] [-u] [-v] [-fix] [-insecure] [build flags] [packages]

Get downloads the packages named by the import paths, along with their dependencies. It then installs the named packages, like 'go install'.

The -d flag instructs get to stop after downloading the packages; that is, it instructs get not to install the packages.

The -f flag, valid only when -u is set, forces get -u not to verify that each package has been checked out from the source control repository implied by its import path. This can be useful if the source is a local fork of the original.

The -fix flag instructs get to run the fix tool on the downloaded packages before resolving dependencies or building the code.

The -insecure flag permits fetching from repositories and resolving custom domains using insecure schemes such as HTTP. Use with caution.

The -t flag instructs get to also download the packages required to build the tests for the specified packages.

The -u flag instructs get to use the network to update the named packages and their dependencies. By default, get uses the network to check out missing packages but does not use it to look for updates to existing packages.

The -v flag enables verbose progress and debug output.

Get also accepts build flags to control the installation. See 'go help build'.

When checking out a new package, get creates the target directory GOPATH/src/. If the GOPATH contains multiple entries, get uses the first one. For more details see: 'go help gopath'.

When checking out or updating a package, get looks for a branch or tag that matches the locally installed version of Go. The most important rule is that if the local installation is running version "go1", get searches for a branch or tag named "go1". If no such version exists it retrieves the default branch of the package.

When go get checks out or updates a Git repository, it also updates any git submodules referenced by the repository.

Get never checks out or updates code stored in vendor directories.

For more about specifying packages, see 'go help packages'.

For more about how 'go get' finds source code to download, see 'go help importpath'.

This text describes the behavior of get when using GOPATH to manage source code and dependencies. If instead the go command is running in module-aware mode, the details of get's flags and effects change, as does 'go help get'. See 'go help modules' and 'go help module-get'.

Get a list of all threads currently running in Java

Get a handle to the root ThreadGroup, like this:

ThreadGroup rootGroup = Thread.currentThread().getThreadGroup();
ThreadGroup parentGroup;
while ((parentGroup = rootGroup.getParent()) != null) {
    rootGroup = parentGroup;
}

Now, call the enumerate() function on the root group repeatedly. The second argument lets you get all threads, recursively:

Thread[] threads = new Thread[rootGroup.activeCount()];
while (rootGroup.enumerate(threads, true ) == threads.length) {
    threads = new Thread[threads.length * 2];
}

Note how we call enumerate() repeatedly until the array is large enough to contain all entries.

How can I disable mod_security in .htaccess file?

In .htaccess file at site root directory edit following line:

_x000D_
_x000D_
<ifmodule mod_security.c>_x000D_
_x000D_
SecFilterEngine Off_x000D_
SecFilterScanPOST Off_x000D_

RewriteRule . /index.php [L]_x000D_
</IfModule>
_x000D_

Just keep the mod_security rules like SecFilterEngine and parts apart from each other. Its works for apache server

Python logging not outputting anything

For anyone here that wants a super-simple answer: just set the level you want displayed. At the top of all my scripts I just put:

import logging
logging.basicConfig(level = logging.INFO)

Then to display anything at or above that level:

logging.info("Hi you just set your fleeb to level plumbus")

It is a hierarchical set of five levels so that logs will display at the level you set, or higher. So if you want to display an error you could use logging.error("The plumbus is broken").

The levels, in increasing order of severity, are DEBUG, INFO, WARNING, ERROR, and CRITICAL. The default setting is WARNING.

This is a good article containing this information expressed better than my answer:

You can do this using attribute selectors without introducing the ID and classes but it's slower and (imho) harder to read.

How are VST Plugins made?

I know this is 3 years old, but for everyone reading this now: Don't stick to VST, AU or any vendor's format. Steinberg has stopped supporting VST2, and people are in trouble porting their code to newer formats, because it's too tied to VST2.

These tutorials cover creating plugins that run on Win/Mac, 32/64, all plugin formats from the same code base.

Inserting one list into another list in java?

100, it will hold the same references. Therefore if you make a change to a specific object in the list, it will affect the same object in anotherList.

Adding or removing objects in any of the list will not affect the other.

list and anotherList are two different instances, they only hold the same references of the objects "inside" them.

install apt-get on linux Red Hat server

If you have a Red Hat server use yum. apt-get is only for Debian, Ubuntu and some other related linux.

Why would you want to use apt-get anyway? (It seems like you know what yum is.)

SQL Query to search schema of all tables

You can also try doing this using one of many third party tools that are available for this.

Queries are great for simple searches but if you need to do more manipulation with data, search for references and such this is where you can do a much better job with these.

Also, these come in very handy when some objects are encrypted and you need to search for

I’m using ApexSQL Search which is free but there are also many more (also free) on the market such as Red Gate or SSMS Tool Pack.

One line ftp server in python

For pyftpdlib users. I found this on the pyftpdlib website. This creates anonymous ftp with write access to your filesystem so please use with due care. More features are available under the hood for better security so just go look:

sudo pip3 install pyftpdlib

python3 -m pyftpdlib -w

## updated for python3 Feb14:2020

Might be helpful for those that tried using the deprecated method above.

sudo python -m pyftpdlib.ftpserver

PostgreSQL create table if not exists

There is no CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS... but you can write a simple procedure for that, something like:

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION prc_create_sch_foo_table() RETURNS VOID AS $$
BEGIN

                    id serial NOT NULL,
                    demo_column varchar NOT NULL,
                    demo_column2 varchar NOT NULL,
                    CONSTRAINT pk_sch_foo PRIMARY KEY (id));
                   CREATE INDEX /* IF NOT EXISTS add for PostgreSQL 9.5+ */ idx_sch_foo_demo_column ON sch.foo(demo_column);
                   CREATE INDEX /* IF NOT EXISTS add for PostgreSQL 9.5+ */ idx_sch_foo_demo_column2 ON sch.foo(demo_column2);'
               WHERE NOT EXISTS(SELECT * FROM information_schema.tables

What is pluginManagement in Maven's pom.xml?

pluginManagement: is an element that is seen along side plugins. Plugin Management contains plugin elements in much the same way, except that rather than configuring plugin information for this particular project build, it is intended to configure project builds that inherit from this one. However, this only configures plugins that are actually referenced within the plugins element in the children. The children have every right to override pluginManagement definitions.

How to style UITextview to like Rounded Rect text field?

Edit: You have to import

#import <QuartzCore/QuartzCore.h>

for using corner radius.

Try this it will work for sure

UITextView* txtView = [[UITextView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(50, 50, 300, 100)];
txtView.layer.cornerRadius = 5.0;
txtView.clipsToBounds = YES;

As Rob figured it out setting the if you want the border color to be similar as UITextField then you need to change the border width to 2.0 and color to gray by adding the following line

[textView.layer setBorderColor:[[[UIColor grayColor] colorWithAlphaComponent:0.5] CGColor]];
[textView.layer setBorderWidth:2.0];

How can I generate random number in specific range in Android?

Random r = new Random();
int i1 = r.nextInt(80 - 65) + 65;

This gives a random integer between 65 (inclusive) and 80 (exclusive), one of 65,66,...,78,79.

$bit4=$string[0];//1
$bit3=$string[1];
$bit2=$string[2];

val() doesn't trigger change() in jQuery

You can very easily override the val function to trigger change by replacing it with a proxy to the original val function.

just add This code somewhere in your document (after loading jQuery)

(function($){
    var originalVal = $.fn.val;
    $.fn.val = function(){
        var result =originalVal.apply(this,arguments);
        if(arguments.length>0)
            $(this).change(); // OR with custom event $(this).trigger('value-changed');
        return result;
    };
})(jQuery);

A working example: here

(Note that this will always trigger change when val(new_val) is called even if the value didn't actually changed.)

If you want to trigger change ONLY when the value actually changed, use this one:

//This will trigger "change" event when "val(new_val)" called
//with value different than the current one
(function($){
    var originalVal = $.fn.val;
    $.fn.val = function(){
        var prev;
        if(arguments.length>0){
            prev = originalVal.apply(this,[]);
        }
        var result =originalVal.apply(this,arguments);
        if(arguments.length>0 && prev!=originalVal.apply(this,[]))
            $(this).change();  // OR with custom event $(this).trigger('value-changed')
        return result;
    };
})(jQuery);

Live example for that: http://jsfiddle.net/5fSmx/1/

"PKIX path building failed" and "unable to find valid certification path to requested target"

I fixed this using below method-

  1. Copy url which is having connecting issue
  2. Go to Android Studio->Settings->Http settings
  3. In 'Test Connection', paste that url and press ok
  4. On Ok click, Android Studio will ask to import certificate of that url, import it
  5. That's it. Nothing else to be done and my issue was gone. No need to restart studio as well.

StringStream in C#

You can use a StringWriter to write values to a string. It provides a stream-like syntax (though does not derive from Stream) which works with an underlying StringBuilder.

  3. Rebuild solution.

Convert NSArray to NSString in Objective-C

NSArray *array = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"One",@"Two",@"Three", nil];
NSString *stringFromArray = [array componentsJoinedByString:@" "];

The first line initializes an array with objects. The second line joins all elements of that array by adding the string inside the "" and returns a string.

What techniques can be used to define a class in JavaScript, and what are their trade-offs?

Because I will not admit the YUI/Crockford factory plan and because I like to keep things self contained and extensible this is my variation:

function Person(params)
{
  this.name = params.name || defaultnamevalue;
  this.role = params.role || defaultrolevalue;

  if(typeof(this.speak)=='undefined') //guarantees one time prototyping
  {
    Person.prototype.speak = function() {/* do whatever */};
  }
}

var Robert = new Person({name:'Bob'});

where ideally the typeof test is on something like the first method prototyped

Can I use a min-height for table, tr or td?

height for td works like min-height:

td {
  height: 100px;
}

instead of

td {

jquery change div text

best and simple way is to put title inside a span and replace then.

'<div id="'+div_id+'" class="widget" style="height:60px;width:110px">\n\
        <div class="widget-head ui-widget-header"
                style="cursor:move;height:20px;width:130px">'+
     '<span id="'+span_id+'" style="float:right; cursor:pointer"
            class="dialog_link ui-icon ui-icon-newwin ui-icon-pencil"></span>' +
      '<span id="spTitle">'+
      dialog_title+ '</span>'
 '</div></div>

now you can simply use this:

$('#'+div_id+' .widget-head sp#spTitle').text("new dialog title");

In my case, i was facing similar issue while running multiple instance of 'npm install' on VM used for build(Windows)

Since it was a VM used only for build there was no other program locking the files. I tried disabling various antivirus settings which didn't worked. "npm cache clear" and "npm cache verify" worked but it was not a right solution for me as i cannot guess when somebody will trigger a build job from Jenkins for different release/environment leading to multiple instance of 'npm install' and hence i cannot add it to the build script nor i can go login to VM and clear/delete the cache folders manually every time.

Finally, after some research, I ended up running "npm install" with separate cache path for each job using following command:

npm install --cache path/to/some/folder

Since, all the jobs running at the same time now had a separate cache path rather than the common global path (Users/AppData/Roaming/), this issue got fixed as the jobs were no more trying to lock and access the same file, from the common npm cache.

Please note you can install a single package with a cache path as follows:

npm install packageName --cache path/to/some/folder

I was not able to find this way of giving a cache path in npm documentation but i gave it a try and it worked. I am using npm6 and looks like it works since npm5.

[Refer: How to specify cache folder in npm5 on install command?

This solution should work for other scenarios as well though may or may not be a good fit.

Good font for code presentations?

I do a lot of such presentation and use Monaco for code and Chalkboard for text (within a template that, overall, has only small changes from the Blackboard one supplied with Keynote). Look at any of my presentations' PDFs (e.g. this one) and you can decide whether you like the effect.

Creating and Naming Worksheet in Excel VBA

http://www.mrexcel.com/td0097.html

Dim WS as Worksheet
Set WS = Sheets.Add

You don't have to know where it's located, or what it's name is, you just refer to it as WS.
If you still want to do this the "old fashioned" way, try this:

Sheets.Add.Name = "Test"

Hide "NFC Tag type not supported" error on Samsung Galaxy devices

Before Android 4.4

What you are trying to do is simply not possible from an app (at least not on a non-rooted/non-modified device). The message "NFC tag type not supported" is displayed by the Android system (or more specifically the NFC system service) before and instead of dispatching the tag to your app. This means that the NFC system service filters MIFARE Classic tags and never notifies any app about them. Consequently, your app can't detect MIFARE Classic tags or circumvent that popup message.

On a rooted device, you may be able to bypass the message using either

  1. Xposed to modify the behavior of the NFC service, or
  2. the CSC (Consumer Software Customization) feature configuration files on the system partition (see /system/csc/. The NFC system service disables the popup and dispatches MIFARE Classic tags to apps if the CSC feature <CscFeature_NFC_EnableSecurityPromptPopup> is set to any value but "mifareclassic" or "all". For instance, you could use:

    <CscFeature_NFC_EnableSecurityPromptPopup>NONE</CscFeature_NFC_EnableSecurityPromptPopup>

    You could add this entry to, for instance, the file "/system/csc/others.xml" (within the section <FeatureSet> ... </FeatureSet> that already exists in that file).

Since, you asked for the Galaxy S6 (the question that you linked) as well: I have tested this method on the S4 when it came out. I have not verified if this still works in the latest firmware or on other devices (e.g. the S6).

Since Android 4.4

This is pure guessing, but according to this (link no longer available), it seems that some apps (e.g. NXP TagInfo) are capable of detecting MIFARE Classic tags on affected Samsung devices since Android 4.4. This might mean that foreground apps are capable of bypassing that popup using the reader-mode API (see NfcAdapter.enableReaderMode) possibly in combination with NfcAdapter.FLAG_READER_SKIP_NDEF_CHECK.

What is the Python equivalent of static variables inside a function?

Another (not recommended!) twist on the callable object like https://stackoverflow.com/a/279598/916373, if you don't mind using a funky call signature, would be to do

class foo(object):
    counter = 0;
    @staticmethod
    def __call__():
        foo.counter += 1
        print "counter is %i" % foo.counter

>>> foo()()
counter is 1
>>> foo()()
counter is 2

Proper use of the IDisposable interface

There are things that the Dispose() operation does in the example code that might have an effect that would not occur due to a normal GC of the MyCollection object.

If the objects referenced by _theList or _theDict are referred to by other objects, then that List<> or Dictionary<> object will not be subject to collection but will suddenly have no contents. If there were no Dispose() operation as in the example, those collections would still contain their contents.

Of course, if this were the situation I would call it a broken design - I'm just pointing out (pedantically, I suppose) that the Dispose() operation might not be completely redundant, depending on whether there are other uses of the List<> or Dictionary<> that are not shown in the fragment.

Java: Instanceof and Generics

Two options for runtime type checking with generics:

Option 1 - Corrupt your constructor

Let's assume you are overriding indexOf(...), and you want to check the type just for performance, to save yourself iterating the entire collection.

Make a filthy constructor like this:

public MyCollection<T>(Class<T> t) {

    this.t = t;
}

Then you can use isAssignableFrom to check the type.

public int indexOf(Object o) {

    if (
        o != null &&

        !t.isAssignableFrom(o.getClass())

    ) return -1;

//...

Each time you instantiate your object you would have to repeat yourself:

new MyCollection<Apples>(Apples.class);

You might decide it isn't worth it. In the implementation of ArrayList.indexOf(...), they do not check that the type matches.

Option 2 - Let it fail

If you need to use an abstract method that requires your unknown type, then all you really want is for the compiler to stop crying about instanceof. If you have a method like this:

protected abstract void abstractMethod(T element);

You can use it like this:

public int indexOf(Object o) {

    try {

        abstractMethod((T) o);

    } catch (ClassCastException e) {

//...

You are casting the object to T (your generic type), just to fool the compiler. Your cast does nothing at runtime, but you will still get a ClassCastException when you try to pass the wrong type of object into your abstract method.

NOTE 1: If you are doing additional unchecked casts in your abstract method, your ClassCastExceptions will get caught here. That could be good or bad, so think it through.

NOTE 2: You get a free null check when you use instanceof. Since you can't use it, you may need to check for null with your bare hands.

VBA code to set date format for a specific column as "yyyy-mm-dd"

It works, when you use both lines:

Application.ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets("data").Range("C1", "C20000") = Format(Date, "yyyy-mm-dd")
Application.ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets("data").Range("C1", "C20000").NumberFormat = "yyyy-mm-dd"

How to split one string into multiple strings separated by at least one space in bash shell?

(A) To split a sentence into its words (space separated) you can simply use the default IFS by using

array=( $string )

Example running the following snippet

#!/bin/bash

sentence="this is the \"sentence\" 'you' want to split"
words=( $sentence )

len="${#words[@]}"
echo "words counted: $len"

printf "%s\n" "${words[@]}" ## print array

will output

words counted: 8
this
is
the
"sentence"
'you'
want
to
split

As you can see you can use single or double quotes too without any problem

Notes:
-- this is basically the same of mob's answer, but in this way you store the array for any further needing. If you only need a single loop, you can use his answer, which is one line shorter :)
-- please refer to this question for alternate methods to split a string based on delimiter.

(B) To check for a character in a string you can also use a regular expression match.
Example to check for the presence of a space character you can use:

regex='\s{1,}'
if [[ "$sentence" =~ $regex ]]
    then
        echo "Space here!";
fi

Set multiple system properties Java command line

If the required properties need to set in system then there is no option than -D But if you need those properties while bootstrapping an application then loading properties through the properties files is a best option. It will not require to change build for a single property.

Meaning of "[: too many arguments" error from if [] (square brackets)

Just bumped into this post, by getting the same error, trying to test if two variables are both empty (or non-empty). That turns out to be a compound comparison - 7.3. Other Comparison Operators - Advanced Bash-Scripting Guide; and I thought I should note the following:

  • I used -e thinking it means "empty" at first; but that means "file exists" - use -z for testing empty variable (string)
  • String variables need to be quoted
  • For compound logical AND comparison, either:
    • use two tests and && them: [ ... ] && [ ... ]
    • or use the -a operator in a single test: [ ... -a ... ]

Here is a working command (searching through all txt files in a directory, and dumping those that grep finds contain both of two words):

find /usr/share/doc -name '*.txt' | while read file; do \
  a1=$(grep -H "description" $file); \
  a2=$(grep -H "changes" $file); \
  [ ! -z "$a1" -a ! -z "$a2"  ] && echo -e "$a1 \n $a2" ; \
done

Edit 12 Aug 2013: related problem note:

Note that when checking string equality with classic test (single square bracket [), you MUST have a space between the "is equal" operator, which in this case is a single "equals" = sign (although two equals' signs == seem to be accepted as equality operator too). Thus, this fails (silently):

$ if [ "1"=="" ] ; then echo A; else echo B; fi
A
$ if [ "1"="" ] ; then echo A; else echo B; fi
A
$ if [ "1"="" ] && [ "1"="1" ] ; then echo A; else echo B; fi
A
$ if [ "1"=="" ] && [ "1"=="1" ] ; then echo A; else echo B; fi
A

... but add the space - and all looks good:

$ if [ "1" = "" ] ; then echo A; else echo B; fi
B
$ if [ "1" == "" ] ; then echo A; else echo B; fi
B
$ if [ "1" = "" -a "1" = "1" ] ; then echo A; else echo B; fi
B
$ if [ "1" == "" -a "1" == "1" ] ; then echo A; else echo B; fi

Lodash .clone and .cloneDeep behaviors

Thanks to Gruff Bunny and Louis' comments, I found the source of the issue.

As I use Backbone.js too, I loaded a special build of Lodash compatible with Backbone and Underscore that disables some features. In this example:

var clone = _.clone(data, true);

data[1].values.d = 'x';

I just replaced the Underscore build with the Normal build in my Backbone application and the application is still working. So I can now use the Lodash .clone with the expected behaviour.

Edit 2018: the Underscore build doesn't seem to exist anymore. If you are reading this in 2018, you could be interested by this documentation (Backbone and Lodash).

Apply style to cells of first row

Use tr:first-child to take the first tr:

.category_table tr:first-child td {
    vertical-align: top;
}

If you have nested tables, and you don't want to apply styles to the inner rows, add some child selectors so only the top-level tds in the first top-level tr get the styles:

.category_table > tbody > tr:first-child > td {
    vertical-align: top;
}

Verify a method call using Moq

You're checking the wrong method. Moq requires that you Setup (and then optionally Verify) the method in the dependency class.

You should be doing something more like this:

class MyClassTest
{
    [TestMethod]
    public void MyMethodTest()
    {
        string action = "test";
        Mock<SomeClass> mockSomeClass = new Mock<SomeClass>();

        mockSomeClass.Setup(mock => mock.DoSomething());

        MyClass myClass = new MyClass(mockSomeClass.Object);
        myClass.MyMethod(action);

        // Explicitly verify each expectation...
        mockSomeClass.Verify(mock => mock.DoSomething(), Times.Once());

        // ...or verify everything.
        // mockSomeClass.VerifyAll();
    }
}

In other words, you are verifying that calling MyClass#MyMethod, your class will definitely call SomeClass#DoSomething once in that process. Note that you don't need the Times argument; I was just demonstrating its value.

How can I send a Firebase Cloud Messaging notification without use the Firebase Console?

You can use for example a PHP script for Google Cloud Messaging (GCM). Firebase, and its console, is just on top of GCM.

Hint: This PHP script results in a android notification.

Therefore: Read this answer from Koot if you want to receive and show the notification in Android.

Sending Email in Android using JavaMail API without using the default/built-in app

I tried using the code that @Vinayak B submitted. However I'm getting an error saying: No provider for smtp

I created a new question for this with more information HERE

I was able to fix it myself after all. I had to use an other mail.jar and I had to make sure my "access for less secure apps" was turned on.

I hope this helps anyone who has the same problem. With this done, this piece of code works on the google glass too.

Add an image in a WPF button

I also had the same issue. I've fixed it by using the following code.

        <Button Width="30" Margin="0,5" HorizontalAlignment="Stretch"  Click="OnSearch" >
            <DockPanel>
                <Image Source="../Resources/Back.jpg"/>
            </DockPanel>
        </Button>

Note: Make sure the build action of the image in the property window, should be Resource.

Can you delete data from influxdb?

Because InfluxDB is a bit painful about deletes, we use a schema that has a boolean field called "ForUse", which looks like this when posting via the line protocol (v0.9):

your_measurement,your_tag=foo ForUse=TRUE,value=123.5 1262304000000000000

You can overwrite the same measurement, tag key, and time with whatever field keys you send, so we do "deletes" by setting "ForUse" to false, and letting retention policy keep the database size under control.

Since the overwrite happens seamlessly, you can retroactively add the schema too. Noice.

Writing to an Excel spreadsheet

The easiest way to import the exact numbers is to add a decimal after the numbers in your l1 and l2. Python interprets this decimal point as instructions from you to include the exact number. If you need to restrict it to some decimal place, you should be able to create a print command that limits the output, something simple like:

print variable_example[:13]

Would restrict it to the tenth decimal place, assuming your data has two integers left of the decimal.

Check if event exists on element

You may use:

How do I convert a byte array to Base64 in Java?

In case you happen to be using Spring framework along with java, there is an easy way around.

  1. Import the following.

    import org.springframework.util.Base64Utils;
  2. Convert like this.

    byte[] bytearr ={0,1,2,3,4};
    String encodedText = Base64Utils.encodeToString(bytearr);

    To decode you can use the decodeToString method of the Base64Utils class.

Sanitizing user input before adding it to the DOM in Javascript

You need to take extra precautions when using user supplied data in HTML attributes. Because attributes has many more attack vectors than output inside HTML tags.

The only way to avoid XSS attacks is to encode everything except alphanumeric characters. Escape all characters with ASCII values less than 256 with the &#xHH; format. Which unfortunately may cause problems in your scenario, if you are using CSS classes and javascript to fetch those elements.

OWASP has a good description of how to mitigate HTML attribute XSS:

How to convert a string into double and vice versa?

To really convert from a string to a number properly, you need to use an instance of NSNumberFormatter configured for the locale from which you're reading the string.

Different locales will format numbers differently. For example, in some parts of the world, COMMA is used as a decimal separator while in others it is PERIOD — and the thousands separator (when used) is reversed. Except when it's a space. Or not present at all.

It really depends on the provenance of the input. The safest thing to do is configure an NSNumberFormatter for the way your input is formatted and use -[NSFormatter numberFromString:] to get an NSNumber from it. If you want to handle conversion errors, you can use -[NSFormatter getObjectValue:forString:range:error:] instead.

What does "Use of unassigned local variable" mean?

The compiler isn't smart enough to know that at least one of your if blocks will be executed. Therefore, it doesn't see that variables like annualRate will be assigned no matter what. Here's how you can make the compiler understand:

if (creditPlan == "0")
{
    // ...
}
else if (creditPlan == "1")
{
    // ...
}
else if (creditPlan == "2")
{
    // ...
}
else
{
    // ...
}

The compiler knows that with an if/else block, one of the blocks is guaranteed to be executed, and therefore if you're assigning the variable in all of the blocks, it won't give the compiler error.

By the way, you can also use a switch statement instead of ifs to maybe make your code cleaner.

Why does C++ compilation take so long?

C++ is compiled into machine code. So you have the pre-processor, the compiler, the optimizer, and finally the assembler, all of which have to run.

Java and C# are compiled into byte-code/IL, and the Java virtual machine/.NET Framework execute (or JIT compile into machine code) prior to execution.

Python is an interpreted language that is also compiled into byte-code.

I'm sure there are other reasons for this as well, but in general, not having to compile to native machine language saves time.

Simple export and import of a SQLite database on Android

I use this code in the SQLiteOpenHelper in one of my applications to import a database file.

EDIT: I pasted my FileUtils.copyFile() method into the question.

SQLiteOpenHelper

public static String DB_FILEPATH = "/data/data/{package_name}/databases/database.db";

/**
 * Copies the database file at the specified location over the current
 * internal application database.
 * */
public boolean importDatabase(String dbPath) throws IOException {

    // Close the SQLiteOpenHelper so it will commit the created empty
    // database to internal storage.
    close();
    File newDb = new File(dbPath);
    File oldDb = new File(DB_FILEPATH);
    if (newDb.exists()) {
        FileUtils.copyFile(new FileInputStream(newDb), new FileOutputStream(oldDb));
        // Access the copied database so SQLiteHelper will cache it and mark
        // it as created.
        getWritableDatabase().close();
        return true;
    }
    return false;
}

FileUtils

public class FileUtils {
    /**
     * Creates the specified <code>toFile</code> as a byte for byte copy of the
     * <code>fromFile</code>. If <code>toFile</code> already exists, then it
     * will be replaced with a copy of <code>fromFile</code>. The name and path
     * of <code>toFile</code> will be that of <code>toFile</code>.<br/>
     * <br/>
     * <i> Note: <code>fromFile</code> and <code>toFile</code> will be closed by
     * this function.</i>
     *
     * @param fromFile
     * - FileInputStream for the file to copy from.
     * @param toFile
     * - FileInputStream for the file to copy to.
     */
    public static void copyFile(FileInputStream fromFile, FileOutputStream toFile) throws IOException {
        FileChannel fromChannel = null;
        FileChannel toChannel = null;
        try {
            fromChannel = fromFile.getChannel();
            toChannel = toFile.getChannel();
            fromChannel.transferTo(0, fromChannel.size(), toChannel);
        } finally {
            try {
                if (fromChannel != null) {
                    fromChannel.close();
                }
            } finally {
                if (toChannel != null) {
                    toChannel.close();
                }
            }
        }
    }
}

Don't forget to delete the old database file if necessary.

Convert String to double in Java

Citing the quote from Robertiano above again - because this is by far the most versatile and localization adaptive version. It deserves a full post!

Another option:

DecimalFormat df = new DecimalFormat();
DecimalFormatSymbols sfs = new DecimalFormatSymbols();
sfs.setDecimalSeparator(',');
df.setDecimalFormatSymbols(sfs);
double d = df.parse(number).doubleValue();

Why is ZoneOffset.UTC != ZoneId.of("UTC")?

The answer comes from the javadoc of ZoneId (emphasis mine) ...

A ZoneId is used to identify the rules used to convert between an Instant and a LocalDateTime. There are two distinct types of ID:

  • Fixed offsets - a fully resolved offset from UTC/Greenwich, that uses the same offset for all local date-times
  • Geographical regions - an area where a specific set of rules for finding the offset from UTC/Greenwich apply

Most fixed offsets are represented by ZoneOffset. Calling normalized() on any ZoneId will ensure that a fixed offset ID will be represented as a ZoneOffset.

... and from the javadoc of ZoneId#of (emphasis mine):

This method parses the ID producing a ZoneId or ZoneOffset. A ZoneOffset is returned if the ID is 'Z', or starts with '+' or '-'.

The argument id is specified as "UTC", therefore it will return a ZoneId with an offset, which also presented in the string form:

System.out.println(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneOffset.UTC));
System.out.println(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("UTC")));

Outputs:

2017-03-10T08:06:28.045Z
2017-03-10T08:06:28.045Z[UTC]

As you use the equals method for comparison, you check for object equivalence. Because of the described difference, the result of the evaluation is false.

When the normalized() method is used as proposed in the documentation, the comparison using equals will return true, as normalized() will return the corresponding ZoneOffset:

Normalizes the time-zone ID, returning a ZoneOffset where possible.

now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneOffset.UTC)
    .equals(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("UTC").normalized())); // true

As the documentation states, if you use "Z" or "+0" as input id, of will return the ZoneOffset directly and there is no need to call normalized():

now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneOffset.UTC).equals(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("Z"))); //true
now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneOffset.UTC).equals(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("+0"))); //true

To check if they store the same date time, you can use the isEqual method instead:

now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneOffset.UTC)
    .isEqual(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("UTC"))); // true

Sample

System.out.println("equals - ZoneId.of(\"UTC\"): " + nowZoneOffset
        .equals(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("UTC"))));
System.out.println("equals - ZoneId.of(\"UTC\").normalized(): " + nowZoneOffset
        .equals(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("UTC").normalized())));
System.out.println("equals - ZoneId.of(\"Z\"): " + nowZoneOffset
        .equals(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("Z"))));
System.out.println("equals - ZoneId.of(\"+0\"): " + nowZoneOffset
        .equals(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("+0"))));
System.out.println("isEqual - ZoneId.of(\"UTC\"): "+ nowZoneOffset
        .isEqual(now.withZoneSameInstant(ZoneId.of("UTC"))));

Output:

equals - ZoneId.of("UTC"): false
equals - ZoneId.of("UTC").normalized(): true
equals - ZoneId.of("Z"): true
equals - ZoneId.of("+0"): true
isEqual - ZoneId.of("UTC"): true

Chrome violation : [Violation] Handler took 83ms of runtime

Perhaps a little off topic, just be informed that these kind of messages can also be seen when you are debugging your code with a breakpoint inside an async function like setTimeout like below:

[Violation] 'setTimeout' handler took 43129ms

That number (43129ms) depends on how long you stop in your async function

Reading PDF content with itextsharp dll in VB.NET or C#

Here an improved answer of ShravankumarKumar. I created special classes for the pages so you can access words in the pdf based on the text rows and the word in that row.

using iTextSharp.text.pdf;
using iTextSharp.text.pdf.parser;

//create a list of pdf pages
var pages = new List<PdfPage>();

//load the pdf into the reader. NOTE: path can also be replaced with a byte array
using (PdfReader reader = new PdfReader(path))
{
    //loop all the pages and extract the text
    for (int i = 1; i <= reader.NumberOfPages; i++)
    {
        pages.Add(new PdfPage()
        {
           content = PdfTextExtractor.GetTextFromPage(reader, i)
        });
    }
}

//use linq to create the rows and words by splitting on newline and space
pages.ForEach(x => x.rows = x.content.Split('\n').Select(y =>
    new PdfRow() {
       content = y,
       words = y.Split(' ').ToList()
    }
).ToList());

The custom classes

class PdfPage
{
    public string content { get; set; }
    public List<PdfRow> rows { get; set; }
}

class PdfRow
{
    public string content { get; set; }
    public List<string> words { get; set; }
}

Now you can get a word by row and word index.

string myWord = pages[0].rows[12].words[4];

Or use Linq to find the rows containing a specific word.

//find the rows in a specific page containing a word
var myRows = pages[0].rows.Where(x => x.words.Any(y => y == "myWord1")).ToList();

//find the rows in all pages containing a word
var myRows = pages.SelectMany(r => r.rows).Where(x => x.words.Any(y => y == "myWord2")).ToList();

How to pass complex object to ASP.NET WebApi GET from jQuery ajax call?

After finding this StackOverflow question/answer

Complex type is getting null in a ApiController parameter

the [FromBody] attribute on the controller method needs to be [FromUri] since a GET does not have a body. After this change the "filter" complex object is passed correctly.

How do I set up the database.yml file in Rails?

The database.yml is a file that is created with new rails applications in /config and defines the database configurations that your application will use in different environments. Read this for details.

Example database.yml:

development:
  adapter: sqlite3
  database: db/development.sqlite3
  pool: 5
  timeout: 5000

test:
  adapter: sqlite3
  database: db/test.sqlite3
  pool: 5
  timeout: 5000

production:
  adapter: mysql
  encoding: utf8
  database: your_db
  username: root
  password: your_pass
  socket: /tmp/mysql.sock
  host: your_db_ip     #defaults to 127.0.0.1
  port: 3306

I want to show all tables that have specified column name

SELECT      T.TABLE_NAME, C.COLUMN_NAME
FROM        INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS C
            INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES T ON T.TABLE_NAME = C.TABLE_NAME
WHERE       TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE'
            AND COLUMN_NAME = 'ColName'

This returns tables only and ignores views for anyone who is interested!

How to perform update operations on columns of type JSONB in Postgres 9.4

This question was asked in the context of postgres 9.4, however new viewers coming to this question should be aware that in postgres 9.5, sub-document Create/Update/Delete operations on JSONB fields are natively supported by the database, without the need for extension functions.

How to get HttpContext.Current in ASP.NET Core?

As a general rule, converting a Web Forms or MVC5 application to ASP.NET Core will require a significant amount of refactoring.

HttpContext.Current was removed in ASP.NET Core. Accessing the current HTTP context from a separate class library is the type of messy architecture that ASP.NET Core tries to avoid. There are a few ways to re-architect this in ASP.NET Core.

HttpContext property

You can access the current HTTP context via the HttpContext property on any controller. The closest thing to your original code sample would be to pass HttpContext into the method you are calling:

public class HomeController : Controller
{
    public IActionResult Index()
    {
        MyMethod(HttpContext);

        // Other code
    }
}

public void MyMethod(Microsoft.AspNetCore.Http.HttpContext context)
{
    var host = $"{context.Request.Scheme}://{context.Request.Host}";

    // Other code
}

HttpContext parameter in middleware

If you're writing custom middleware for the ASP.NET Core pipeline, the current request's HttpContext is passed into your Invoke method automatically:

public Task Invoke(HttpContext context)
{
    // Do something with the current HTTP context...
}

HTTP context accessor

Finally, you can use the IHttpContextAccessor helper service to get the HTTP context in any class that is managed by the ASP.NET Core dependency injection system. This is useful when you have a common service that is used by your controllers.

Request this interface in your constructor:

public MyMiddleware(IHttpContextAccessor httpContextAccessor)
{
    _httpContextAccessor = httpContextAccessor;
}

You can then access the current HTTP context in a safe way:

var context = _httpContextAccessor.HttpContext;
// Do something with the current HTTP context...

IHttpContextAccessor isn't always added to the service container by default, so register it in ConfigureServices just to be safe:

public void ConfigureServices(IServiceCollection services)
{
    services.AddHttpContextAccessor();
    // if < .NET Core 2.2 use this
    //services.TryAddSingleton<IHttpContextAccessor, HttpContextAccessor>();

    // Other code...
}

Headers and client library minor version mismatch

I ran into the same issue on centos7. Removing php-mysql and installing php-mysqlnd fixed the problem. Thanks Carlos Buenosvinos Zamora for your suggestion.

Here are my commands on centos7 just in case this can be of help to anybody as most of the answers here are based on Debian/Ubuntu.

To find the installed php-mysql package

yum list installed | grep mysql

To remove the installed php-mysql package

yum remove php55w-mysql.x86_64

To install php-mysqlnd

yum install php-mysqlnd.x86_64

The Definitive C Book Guide and List

Beginner

Introductory, no previous programming experience

  • C++ Primer * (Stanley Lippman, Josée Lajoie, and Barbara E. Moo) (updated for C++11) Coming at 1k pages, this is a very thorough introduction into C++ that covers just about everything in the language in a very accessible format and in great detail. The fifth edition (released August 16, 2012) covers C++11. [Review]

    * Not to be confused with C++ Primer Plus (Stephen Prata), with a significantly less favorable review.

  • Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++ (Bjarne Stroustrup, 2nd Edition - May 25, 2014) (updated for C++11/C++14) An introduction to programming using C++ by the creator of the language. A good read, that assumes no previous programming experience, but is not only for beginners.

Introductory, with previous programming experience

  • A Tour of C++ (Bjarne Stroustrup) (2nd edition for C++17) The “tour” is a quick (about 180 pages and 14 chapters) tutorial overview of all of standard C++ (language and standard library, and using C++11) at a moderately high level for people who already know C++ or at least are experienced programmers. This book is an extended version of the material that constitutes Chapters 2-5 of The C++ Programming Language, 4th edition.

  • Accelerated C++ (Andrew Koenig and Barbara Moo, 1st Edition - August 24, 2000) This basically covers the same ground as the C++ Primer, but does so on a fourth of its space. This is largely because it does not attempt to be an introduction to programming, but an introduction to C++ for people who've previously programmed in some other language. It has a steeper learning curve, but, for those who can cope with this, it is a very compact introduction to the language. (Historically, it broke new ground by being the first beginner's book to use a modern approach to teaching the language.) Despite this, the C++ it teaches is purely C++98. [Review]

Best practices

  • Effective C++ (Scott Meyers, 3rd Edition - May 22, 2005) This was written with the aim of being the best second book C++ programmers should read, and it succeeded. Earlier editions were aimed at programmers coming from C, the third edition changes this and targets programmers coming from languages like Java. It presents ~50 easy-to-remember rules of thumb along with their rationale in a very accessible (and enjoyable) style. For C++11 and C++14 the examples and a few issues are outdated and Effective Modern C++ should be preferred. [Review]

  • Effective Modern C++ (Scott Meyers) This is basically the new version of Effective C++, aimed at C++ programmers making the transition from C++03 to C++11 and C++14.

  • Effective STL (Scott Meyers) This aims to do the same to the part of the standard library coming from the STL what Effective C++ did to the language as a whole: It presents rules of thumb along with their rationale. [Review]

Intermediate

  • More Effective C++ (Scott Meyers) Even more rules of thumb than Effective C++. Not as important as the ones in the first book, but still good to know.

  • Exceptional C++ (Herb Sutter) Presented as a set of puzzles, this has one of the best and thorough discussions of the proper resource management and exception safety in C++ through Resource Acquisition is Initialization (RAII) in addition to in-depth coverage of a variety of other topics including the pimpl idiom, name lookup, good class design, and the C++ memory model. [Review]

  • More Exceptional C++ (Herb Sutter) Covers additional exception safety topics not covered in Exceptional C++, in addition to discussion of effective object-oriented programming in C++ and correct use of the STL. [Review]

  • Exceptional C++ Style (Herb Sutter) Discusses generic programming, optimization, and resource management; this book also has an excellent exposition of how to write modular code in C++ by using non-member functions and the single responsibility principle. [Review]

  • C++ Coding Standards (Herb Sutter and Andrei Alexandrescu) “Coding standards” here doesn't mean “how many spaces should I indent my code?” This book contains 101 best practices, idioms, and common pitfalls that can help you to write correct, understandable, and efficient C++ code. [Review]

  • C++ Templates: The Complete Guide (David Vandevoorde and Nicolai M. Josuttis) This is the book about templates as they existed before C++11. It covers everything from the very basics to some of the most advanced template metaprogramming and explains every detail of how templates work (both conceptually and at how they are implemented) and discusses many common pitfalls. Has excellent summaries of the One Definition Rule (ODR) and overload resolution in the appendices. A second edition covering C++11, C++14 and C++17 has been already published. [Review]

  • C++ 17 - The Complete Guide (Nicolai M. Josuttis) This book describes all the new features introduced in the C++17 Standard covering everything from the simple ones like 'Inline Variables', 'constexpr if' all the way up to 'Polymorphic Memory Resources' and 'New and Delete with overaligned Data'. [Review]

  • C++ in Action (Bartosz Milewski). This book explains C++ and its features by building an application from ground up. [Review]

  • Functional Programming in C++ (Ivan Cukic). This book introduces functional programming techniques to modern C++ (C++11 and later). A very nice read for those who want to apply functional programming paradigms to C++.

  • Professional C++ (Marc Gregoire, 5th Edition - Feb 2021) Provides a comprehensive and detailed tour of the C++ language implementation replete with professional tips and concise but informative in-text examples, emphasizing C++20 features. Uses C++20 features, such as modules and std::format throughout all examples.

Advanced

  • Modern C++ Design (Andrei Alexandrescu) A groundbreaking book on advanced generic programming techniques. Introduces policy-based design, type lists, and fundamental generic programming idioms then explains how many useful design patterns (including small object allocators, functors, factories, visitors, and multi-methods) can be implemented efficiently, modularly, and cleanly using generic programming. [Review]

  • C++ Template Metaprogramming (David Abrahams and Aleksey Gurtovoy)

  • C++ Concurrency In Action (Anthony Williams) A book covering C++11 concurrency support including the thread library, the atomics library, the C++ memory model, locks and mutexes, as well as issues of designing and debugging multithreaded applications. A second edition covering C++14 and C++17 has been already published. [Review]

  • Advanced C++ Metaprogramming (Davide Di Gennaro) A pre-C++11 manual of TMP techniques, focused more on practice than theory. There are a ton of snippets in this book, some of which are made obsolete by type traits, but the techniques, are nonetheless useful to know. If you can put up with the quirky formatting/editing, it is easier to read than Alexandrescu, and arguably, more rewarding. For more experienced developers, there is a good chance that you may pick up something about a dark corner of C++ (a quirk) that usually only comes about through extensive experience.

Reference Style - All Levels

  • The C++ Programming Language (Bjarne Stroustrup) (updated for C++11) The classic introduction to C++ by its creator. Written to parallel the classic K&R, this indeed reads very much like it and covers just about everything from the core language to the standard library, to programming paradigms to the language's philosophy. [Review] Note: All releases of the C++ standard are tracked in the question "Where do I find the current C or C++ standard documents?".

  • C++ Standard Library Tutorial and Reference (Nicolai Josuttis) (updated for C++11) The introduction and reference for the C++ Standard Library. The second edition (released on April 9, 2012) covers C++11. [Review]

  • The C++ IO Streams and Locales (Angelika Langer and Klaus Kreft) There's very little to say about this book except that, if you want to know anything about streams and locales, then this is the one place to find definitive answers. [Review]

C++11/14/17/… References:

  • The C++11/14/17 Standard (INCITS/ISO/IEC 14882:2011/2014/2017) This, of course, is the final arbiter of all that is or isn't C++. Be aware, however, that it is intended purely as a reference for experienced users willing to devote considerable time and effort to its understanding. The C++17 standard is released in electronic form for 198 Swiss Francs.

  • The C++17 standard is available, but seemingly not in an economical form – directly from the ISO it costs 198 Swiss Francs (about $200 US). For most people, the final draft before standardization is more than adequate (and free). Many will prefer an even newer draft, documenting new features that are likely to be included in C++20.

  • Overview of the New C++ (C++11/14) (PDF only) (Scott Meyers) (updated for C++14) These are the presentation materials (slides and some lecture notes) of a three-day training course offered by Scott Meyers, who's a highly respected author on C++. Even though the list of items is short, the quality is high.

  • The C++ Core Guidelines (C++11/14/17/…) (edited by Bjarne Stroustrup and Herb Sutter) is an evolving online document consisting of a set of guidelines for using modern C++ well. The guidelines are focused on relatively higher-level issues, such as interfaces, resource management, memory management and concurrency affecting application architecture and library design. The project was announced at CppCon'15 by Bjarne Stroustrup and others and welcomes contributions from the community. Most guidelines are supplemented with a rationale and examples as well as discussions of possible tool support. Many rules are designed specifically to be automatically checkable by static analysis tools.

  • The C++ Super-FAQ (Marshall Cline, Bjarne Stroustrup and others) is an effort by the Standard C++ Foundation to unify the C++ FAQs previously maintained individually by Marshall Cline and Bjarne Stroustrup and also incorporating new contributions. The items mostly address issues at an intermediate level and are often written with a humorous tone. Not all items might be fully up to date with the latest edition of the C++ standard yet.

  • cppreference.com (C++03/11/14/17/…) (initiated by Nate Kohl) is a wiki that summarizes the basic core-language features and has extensive documentation of the C++ standard library. The documentation is very precise but is easier to read than the official standard document and provides better navigation due to its wiki nature. The project documents all versions of the C++ standard and the site allows filtering the display for a specific version. The project was presented by Nate Kohl at CppCon'14.

Classics / Older

Note: Some information contained within these books may not be up-to-date or no longer considered best practice.

  • The Design and Evolution of C++ (Bjarne Stroustrup) If you want to know why the language is the way it is, this book is where you find answers. This covers everything before the standardization of C++.

  • Ruminations on C++ - (Andrew Koenig and Barbara Moo) [Review]

  • Advanced C++ Programming Styles and Idioms (James Coplien) A predecessor of the pattern movement, it describes many C++-specific “idioms”. It's certainly a very good book and might still be worth a read if you can spare the time, but quite old and not up-to-date with current C++.

  • Large Scale C++ Software Design (John Lakos) Lakos explains techniques to manage very big C++ software projects. Certainly, a good read, if it only was up to date. It was written long before C++ 98 and misses on many features (e.g. namespaces) important for large-scale projects. If you need to work in a big C++ software project, you might want to read it, although you need to take more than a grain of salt with it. The first volume of a new edition is released in 2019.

  • Inside the C++ Object Model (Stanley Lippman) If you want to know how virtual member functions are commonly implemented and how base objects are commonly laid out in memory in a multi-inheritance scenario, and how all this affects performance, this is where you will find thorough discussions of such topics.

  • The Annotated C++ Reference Manual (Bjarne Stroustrup, Margaret A. Ellis) This book is quite outdated in the fact that it explores the 1989 C++ 2.0 version - Templates, exceptions, namespaces and new casts were not yet introduced. Saying that however, this book goes through the entire C++ standard of the time explaining the rationale, the possible implementations, and features of the language. This is not a book to learn programming principles and patterns on C++, but to understand every aspect of the C++ language.

  • Thinking in C++ (Bruce Eckel, 2nd Edition, 2000). Two volumes; is a tutorial style free set of intro level books. Downloads: vol 1, vol 2. Unfortunately they're marred by a number of trivial errors (e.g. maintaining that temporaries are automatically const), with no official errata list. A partial 3rd party errata list is available at http://www.computersciencelab.com/Eckel.htm, but it is apparently not maintained.

  • Scientific and Engineering C++: An Introduction to Advanced Techniques and Examples (John Barton and Lee Nackman) It is a comprehensive and very detailed book that tried to explain and make use of all the features available in C++, in the context of numerical methods. It introduced at the time several new techniques, such as the Curiously Recurring Template Pattern (CRTP, also called Barton-Nackman trick). It pioneered several techniques such as dimensional analysis and automatic differentiation. It came with a lot of compilable and useful code, ranging from an expression parser to a Lapack wrapper. The code is still available online. Unfortunately, the books have become somewhat outdated in the style and C++ features, however, it was an incredible tour-de-force at the time (1994, pre-STL). The chapters on dynamics inheritance are a bit complicated to understand and not very useful. An updated version of this classic book that includes move semantics and the lessons learned from the STL would be very nice.

How to determine if string contains specific substring within the first X characters

A more explicit version is

found = Value1.StartsWith("abc", StringComparison.Ordinal);

It's best to always explicitly list the particular comparison you are doing. The String class can be somewhat inconsistent with the type of comparisons that are used.

That is the textarea's job - for multiline text input. The input won't do it; it wasn't designed to do it.

So use a textarea. Besides their visual differences, they are accessed via JavaScript the same way (use value property).

You can prevent newlines being entered via the input event and simply using a replace(/\n/g, '').

How to get value from form field in django framework?

Using a form in a view pretty much explains it.

The standard pattern for processing a form in a view looks like this:

def contact(request):
    if request.method == 'POST': # If the form has been submitted...
        form = ContactForm(request.POST) # A form bound to the POST data
        if form.is_valid(): # All validation rules pass
            # Process the data in form.cleaned_data
            # ...

            print form.cleaned_data['my_form_field_name']

            return HttpResponseRedirect('/thanks/') # Redirect after POST
    else:
        form = ContactForm() # An unbound form

    return render_to_response('contact.html', {
        'form': form,
    })

Export P7b file with all the certificate chain into CER file

The selected answer didn't work for me, but it's close. I found a tutorial that worked for me and the certificate I obtained from StartCom.

  1. Open the .p7b in a text editor.
  2. Change the leader and trailer so the file looks similar to this:

    -----BEGIN PKCS7-----
    [... certificate content here ...]
    -----END PKCS7-----

For example, my StartCom certificate began with:

    -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----

and ended with:

    -----END CERTIFICATE-----
  1. Save and close the .p7b.
  2. Run the following OpenSSL command (works on Ubuntu 14.04.4, as of this writing):

    openssl pkcs7 -print_certs –in pkcs7.p7b -out pem.cer

The output is a .cer with the certificate chain.

How to do an array of hashmaps?

Java doesn't want you to make an array of HashMaps, but it will let you make an array of Objects. So, just write up a class declaration as a shell around your HashMap, and make an array of that class. This lets you store some extra data about the HashMaps if you so choose--which can be a benefit, given that you already have a somewhat complex data structure.

What this looks like:

private static someClass[] arr = new someClass[someNum];

and

public class someClass {

private static int dataFoo;
private static int dataBar;
private static HashMap<String, String> yourArray;

...

}

What's a "static method" in C#?

Static variable doesn't link with object of the class. It can be accessed using classname. All object of the class will share static variable.

By making function as static, It will restrict the access of that function within that file.

How to properly export an ES6 class in Node 4?

class expression can be used for simplicity.

 // Foo.js
'use strict';

// export default class Foo {}
module.exports = class Foo {}

-

// main.js
'use strict';

const Foo = require('./Foo.js');

let Bar = new class extends Foo {
  constructor() {
    super();
    this.name = 'bar';
  }
}

console.log(Bar.name);

Chrome dev tools fails to show response even the content returned has header Content-Type:text/html; charset=UTF-8

"Failed to show response data" can also happen if you are doing crossdomain requests and the remote host is not properly handling the CORS headers. Check your js console for errors.

How do I kill an Activity when the Back button is pressed?

First of all, finish() doesn't destroy your process and free up the memory. It just removes the activity from the activity stack. You'd need to kill the process, which is answered in a bunch of questions (since this is being asked several times).

But the proper answer is - Don't do it. the Android OS will automatically free up memory when it needs memory. By not freeing up memory, your app will start up faster if the user gets back to it.

Please see here for a great write-up on the topic.

jQuery deferreds and promises - .then() vs .done()

then() always means it will be called in whatever case. But the parameters passing are different in different jQuery versions.

Prior to jQuery 1.8, then() equals done().fail(). And all of the callback functions share same parameters.

But as of jQuery 1.8, then() returns a new promise, and if it has return a value, it will be passed into the next callback function.

Let's see the following example:

var defer = jQuery.Deferred();

defer.done(function(a, b){
            return a + b;
}).done(function( result ) {
            console.log("result = " + result);
}).then(function( a, b ) {
            return a + b;
}).done(function( result ) {
            console.log("result = " + result);
}).then(function( a, b ) {
            return a + b;
}).done(function( result ) {
            console.log("result = " + result);
});

defer.resolve( 3, 4 );

Prior to jQuery 1.8, the answer should be

result = 3
result = 3
result = 3

All result takes 3. And then() function always passes the same deferred object to the next function.

But as of jQuery 1.8, the result should be:

result = 3
result = 7
result = NaN

Because the first then() function returns a new promise, and the value 7 (and this is the only parameter that will passed on)is passed to the next done(), so the second done() write result = 7. The second then() takes 7 as the value of a and takes undefined as the value of b, so the second then() returns a new promise with the parameter NaN, and the last done() prints NaN as its result.

Rotating a Vector in 3D Space

If you want to rotate a vector you should construct what is known as a rotation matrix.

Rotation in 2D

Say you want to rotate a vector or a point by ?, then trigonometry states that the new coordinates are

    x' = x cos ? - y sin ?
    y' = x sin ? + y cos ?

To demo this, let's take the cardinal axes X and Y; when we rotate the X-axis 90° counter-clockwise, we should end up with the X-axis transformed into Y-axis. Consider

    Unit vector along X axis = <1, 0>
    x' = 1 cos 90 - 0 sin 90 = 0
    y' = 1 sin 90 + 0 cos 90 = 1
    New coordinates of the vector, <x', y'> = <0, 1>  ?  Y-axis

When you understand this, creating a matrix to do this becomes simple. A matrix is just a mathematical tool to perform this in a comfortable, generalized manner so that various transformations like rotation, scale and translation (moving) can be combined and performed in a single step, using one common method. From linear algebra, to rotate a point or vector in 2D, the matrix to be built is

    |cos ?   -sin ?| |x| = |x cos ? - y sin ?| = |x'|
    |sin ?    cos ?| |y|   |x sin ? + y cos ?|   |y'|

Rotation in 3D

That works in 2D, while in 3D we need to take in to account the third axis. Rotating a vector around the origin (a point) in 2D simply means rotating it around the Z-axis (a line) in 3D; since we're rotating around Z-axis, its coordinate should be kept constant i.e. 0° (rotation happens on the XY plane in 3D). In 3D rotating around the Z-axis would be

    |cos ?   -sin ?   0| |x|   |x cos ? - y sin ?|   |x'|
    |sin ?    cos ?   0| |y| = |x sin ? + y cos ?| = |y'|
    |  0       0      1| |z|   |        z        |   |z'|

around the Y-axis would be

    | cos ?    0   sin ?| |x|   | x cos ? + z sin ?|   |x'|
    |   0      1       0| |y| = |         y        | = |y'|
    |-sin ?    0   cos ?| |z|   |-x sin ? + z cos ?|   |z'|

around the X-axis would be

    |1     0           0| |x|   |        x        |   |x'|
    |0   cos ?    -sin ?| |y| = |y cos ? - z sin ?| = |y'|
    |0   sin ?     cos ?| |z|   |y sin ? + z cos ?|   |z'|

Note 1: axis around which rotation is done has no sine or cosine elements in the matrix.

Note 2: This method of performing rotations follows the Euler angle rotation system, which is simple to teach and easy to grasp. This works perfectly fine for 2D and for simple 3D cases; but when rotation needs to be performed around all three axes at the same time then Euler angles may not be sufficient due to an inherent deficiency in this system which manifests itself as Gimbal lock. People resort to Quaternions in such situations, which is more advanced than this but doesn't suffer from Gimbal locks when used correctly.

I hope this clarifies basic rotation.

Rotation not Revolution

The aforementioned matrices rotate an object at a distance r = v(x² + y²) from the origin along a circle of radius r; lookup polar coordinates to know why. This rotation will be with respect to the world space origin a.k.a revolution. Usually we need to rotate an object around its own frame/pivot and not around the world's i.e. local origin. This can also be seen as a special case where r = 0. Since not all objects are at the world origin, simply rotating using these matrices will not give the desired result of rotating around the object's own frame. You'd first translate (move) the object to world origin (so that the object's origin would align with the world's, thereby making r = 0), perform the rotation with one (or more) of these matrices and then translate it back again to its previous location. The order in which the transforms are applied matters. Combining multiple transforms together is called concatenation or composition.

Composition

I urge you to read about linear and affine transformations and their composition to perform multiple transformations in one shot, before playing with transformations in code. Without understanding the basic maths behind it, debugging transformations would be a nightmare. I found this lecture video to be a very good resource. Another resource is this tutorial on transformations that aims to be intuitive and illustrates the ideas with animation (caveat: authored by me!).

Rotation around Arbitrary Vector

A product of the aforementioned matrices should be enough if you only need rotations around cardinal axes (X, Y or Z) like in the question posted. However, in many situations you might want to rotate around an arbitrary axis/vector. The Rodrigues' formula (a.k.a. axis-angle formula) is a commonly prescribed solution to this problem. However, resort to it only if you’re stuck with just vectors and matrices. If you're using Quaternions, just build a quaternion with the required vector and angle. Quaternions are a superior alternative for storing and manipulating 3D rotations; it's compact and fast e.g. concatenating two rotations in axis-angle representation is fairly expensive, moderate with matrices but cheap in quaternions. Usually all rotation manipulations are done with quaternions and as the last step converted to matrices when uploading to the rendering pipeline. See Understanding Quaternions for a decent primer on quaternions.

What is the easiest way to initialize a std::vector with hardcoded elements?

If you want something on the same general order as Boost::assign without creating a dependency on Boost, the following is at least vaguely similar:

template<class T>
class make_vector {
    std::vector<T> data;
public:
    make_vector(T const &val) {
        data.push_back(val);
    }

    make_vector<T> &operator,(T const &t) {
        data.push_back(t);
        return *this;
    }

    operator std::vector<T>() { return data; }
};

template<class T>
make_vector<T> makeVect(T const &t) {
    return make_vector<T>(t);
}

While I wish the syntax for using it was cleaner, it's still not particularly awful:

std::vector<int> x = (makeVect(1), 2, 3, 4);

You can use forever-service for doing this.

npm install -g forever-service
forever-service install test

This will provision app.js in the current directory as a service via forever. The service will automatically restart every time system is restarted. Also when stopped it will attempt a graceful stop. This script provisions the logrotate script as well.

What are these attributes: `aria-labelledby` and `aria-hidden`

HTML5 ARIA attribute is what you're looking for. It can be used in your code even without bootstrap.

Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) defines ways to make Web content and Web applications (especially those developed with Ajax and JavaScript) more accessible to people with disabilities.

To be precise for your question, here is what your attributes are called as ARIA attribute states and model

aria-labelledby: Identifies the element (or elements) that labels the current element.

aria-hidden (state): Indicates that the element and all of its descendants are not visible or perceivable to any user as implemented by the author.

When are static variables initialized?

static variable

  • It is a variable which belongs to the class and not to object(instance)
  • Static variables are initialized only once , at the start of the execution(when the Classloader load the class for the first time) .
  • These variables will be initialized first, before the initialization of any instance variables
  • A single copy to be shared by all instances of the class
  • A static variable can be accessed directly by the class name and doesn’t need any object

Adding a directory to the PATH environment variable in Windows

I would use PowerShell instead!

To add a directory to PATH using PowerShell, do the following:

$PATH = [Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("PATH")
$xampp_path = "C:\xampp\php"
[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("PATH", "$PATH;$xampp_path")

To set the variable for all users, machine-wide, the last line should be like:

[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("PATH", "$PATH;$xampp_path", "Machine")

In a PowerShell script, you might want to check for the presence of your C:\xampp\php before adding to PATH (in case it has been previously added). You can wrap it in an if conditional.

So putting it all together:

$PATH = [Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("PATH", "Machine")
$xampp_path = "C:\xampp\php"
if( $PATH -notlike "*"+$xampp_path+"*" ){
    [Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("PATH", "$PATH;$xampp_path", "Machine")
}

Better still, one could create a generic function. Just supply the directory you wish to add:

function AddTo-Path{
param(
    [string]$Dir
)

    if( !(Test-Path $Dir) ){
        Write-warning "Supplied directory was not found!"
        return
    }
    $PATH = [Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("PATH", "Machine")
    if( $PATH -notlike "*"+$Dir+"*" ){
        [Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("PATH", "$PATH;$Dir", "Machine")
    }
}

You could make things better by doing some polishing. For example, using Test-Path to confirm that your directory actually exists.

Float vs Decimal in ActiveRecord

I remember my CompSci professor saying never to use floats for currency.

The reason for that is how the IEEE specification defines floats in binary format. Basically, it stores sign, fraction and exponent to represent a Float. It's like a scientific notation for binary (something like +1.43*10^2). Because of that, it is impossible to store fractions and decimals in Float exactly.

That's why there is a Decimal format. If you do this:

irb:001:0> "%.47f" % (1.0/10)
=> "0.10000000000000000555111512312578270211815834045" # not "0.1"!

whereas if you just do

irb:002:0> (1.0/10).to_s
=> "0.1" # the interprer rounds the number for you

So if you are dealing with small fractions, like compounding interests, or maybe even geolocation, I would highly recommend Decimal format, since in decimal format 1.0/10 is exactly 0.1.

However, it should be noted that despite being less accurate, floats are processed faster. Here's a benchmark:

require "benchmark"
require "bigdecimal"

d = BigDecimal.new(3)
f = Float(3)

time_decimal = Benchmark.measure{ (1..10000000).each { |i| d * d } }
time_float = Benchmark.measure{ (1..10000000).each { |i| f * f } }

puts time_decimal
#=> 6.770960 seconds
puts time_float
#=> 0.988070 seconds

Answer

Use float when you don't care about precision too much. For example, some scientific simulations and calculations only need up to 3 or 4 significant digits. This is useful in trading off accuracy for speed. Since they don't need precision as much as speed, they would use float.

Use decimal if you are dealing with numbers that need to be precise and sum up to correct number (like compounding interests and money-related things). Remember: if you need precision, then you should always use decimal.

TypeError: 'list' object cannot be interpreted as an integer

remove the range.

for i in myList

range takes in an integer. you want for each element in the list.

Copy file from source directory to binary directory using CMake

both option are valid and targeting two different steps of your build:

  1. file(COPY ... copies the file in configuration step and only in this step. When you rebuild your project without having changed your cmake configuration, this command won't be executed.
  2. add_custom_command is the preferred choice when you want to copy the file around on each build step.

The right version for your task would be:

add_custom_command(
        TARGET foo POST_BUILD
        COMMAND ${CMAKE_COMMAND} -E copy
                ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR}/test/input.txt
                ${CMAKE_CURRENT_BINARY_DIR}/input.txt)

you can choose between PRE_BUILD, PRE_LINK, POST_BUILD best is you read the documentation of add_custom_command

an example on how to use the first version can be found here: Use CMake add_custom_command to generate source for another target

Error in Python script "Expected 2D array, got 1D array instead:"?

I was facing the same issue earlier but I have somehow found the solution, You can try reg.predict([[3300]]).

The API used to allow scalar value but now you need to give a 2D array.

ES6 export all values from object

export const a = 1;
export const b = 2;
export const c = 3;

This will work w/ Babel transforms today and should take advantage of all the benefits of ES2016 modules whenever that feature actually lands in a browser.

You can also add export default {a, b, c}; which will allow you to import all the values as an object w/o the * as, i.e. import myModule from 'my-module';

Use Nesting column

To nest your content with the default grid, add a new .row and set of .col-sm-* columns within an existing .col-sm-* column. Nested rows should include a set of columns that add up to 12 or fewer (it is not required that you use all 12 available columns).

How does DateTime.Now.Ticks exactly work?

You can get the milliseconds since 1/1/1970 using such code:

private static DateTime JanFirst1970 = new DateTime(1970, 1, 1);
public static long getTime()
{
    return (long)((DateTime.Now.ToUniversalTime() - JanFirst1970).TotalMilliseconds + 0.5);
}

SQL query, store result of SELECT in local variable

I came here with a similar question/problem, but I only needed a single value to be stored from the query, not an array/table of results as in the orig post. I was able to use the table method above for a single value, however I have stumbled upon an easier way to store a single value.

declare @myVal int; set @myVal = isnull((select a from table1), 0);

Make sure to default the value in the isnull statement to a valid type for your variable, in my example the value in table1 that we're storing is an int.

Is there a way to word-wrap long words in a div?

You can try specifying a width for the div, whether it be in pixels, percentages or ems, and at that point the div will remain that width and the text will wrap automatically then within the div.

Difference Between Cohesion and Coupling

enter image description here

cohesion refers all about how a single class is designed. Cohesion is the Object Oriented principle most closely associated with making sure that a class is designed with a single, well-focused purpose. The more focused a class is, the cohesiveness of that class is more. The advantages of high cohesion is that such classes are much easier to maintain (and less frequently changed) than classes with low cohesion. Another benefit of high cohesion is that classes with a well-focused purpose tend to be more reusable than other classes.

In the above image, we can see that in low cohesion only one class is responsible to execute lots of job which are not in common which reduces the chance of re-usability and maintenance. But in high cohesion there is a separate class for all the jobs to execute a specific job, which result better usability and maintenance.

if block inside echo statement?

In sake of readability it should be something like

<?php
  $countries = $myaddress->get_countries();
  foreach($countries as $value) {
    $selected ='';
    if($value=='United States') $selected ='selected="selected"';
    echo '<option value="'.$value.'"'.$selected.'>'.$value.'</option>';
  }
?>

desire to stuff EVERYTHING in a single line is a decease, man. Write distinctly.

But there is another way, a better one. There is no need to use echo at all. Learn to use templates. Prepare your data first, and display it only then ready.

Business logic part:

$countries = $myaddress->get_countries();
$selected_country = 1;

Template part:

<? foreach($countries as $row): ?>
<option value="<?=$row['id']?>"<? if ($row['id']==$current_country):> "selected"><? endif ?>
  <?=$row['name']?>
</option>
<? endforeach ?>

How to add a reference programmatically

There are two ways to add references using VBA. .AddFromGuid(Guid, Major, Minor) and .AddFromFile(Filename). Which one is best depends on what you are trying to add a reference to. I almost always use .AddFromFile because the things I am referencing are other Excel VBA Projects and they aren't in the Windows Registry.

The example code you are showing will add a reference to the workbook the code is in. I generally don't see any point in doing that because 90% of the time, before you can add the reference, the code has already failed to compile because the reference is missing. (And if it didn't fail-to-compile, you are probably using late binding and you don't need to add a reference.)

If you are having problems getting the code to run, there are two possible issues.

  1. In order to easily use the VBE's object model, you need to add a reference to Microsoft Visual Basic for Application Extensibility. (VBIDE)
  2. In order to run Excel VBA code that changes anything in a VBProject, you need to Trust access to the VBA Project Object Model. (In Excel 2010, it is located in the Trust Center - Macro Settings.)

Aside from that, if you can be a little more clear on what your question is or what you are trying to do that isn't working, I could give a more specific answer.

Checking password match while typing

Probably invalid syntax in your onChange event, I avoid using like this (within the html) as I think it is messy and it is hard enough keeping JavaScript tidy at the best of times.

I would rather register the event on the document ready event in javascript. You will also definitely want to use keyup event too if you want the validation as the user is typing:

$(document).ready(function () {
   $("#txtConfirmPassword").keyup(checkPasswordMatch);
});

Here is a working example

Personally I would prefer to do the check when either password field changes, that way if they re-type the original password then you still get the same validation check:

$(document).ready(function () {
   $("#txtNewPassword, #txtConfirmPassword").keyup(checkPasswordMatch);
});

Here is a working example

How do I make an input field accept only letters in javaScript?

If you want only letters - so from a to z, lower case or upper case, excluding everything else (numbers, blank spaces, symbols), you can modify your function like this:

function validate() {
    if (document.myForm.name.value == "") {
        alert("Enter a name");
        document.myForm.name.focus();
        return false;
    }
    if (!/^[a-zA-Z]*$/g.test(document.myForm.name.value)) {
        alert("Invalid characters");
        document.myForm.name.focus();
        return false;
    }
}

Formatting DataBinder.Eval data

After some searching on the Internet I found that it is in fact very much possible to call a custom method passing the DataBinder.Eval value.

The custom method can be written in the code behind file, but has to be declared public or protected. In my question above, I had mentioned that I tried to write the custom method in the code behind but was getting a run time error. The reason for this was that I had declared the method to be private.

So, in summary the following is a good way to use DataBinder.Eval value to get your desired output:

default.aspx

<asp:Label ID="lblNewsDate" runat="server" Text='<%# GetDateInHomepageFormat(DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "publishedDate")) )%>'></asp:Label>

default.aspx.cs code:

public partial class _Default : System.Web.UI.Page
{

    protected string GetDateInHomepageFormat(DateTime d)
    {

        string retValue = "";

        // Do all processing required and return value

        return retValue;
    }
}

Hope this helps others as well.

How to Call VBA Function from Excel Cells?

Here's the answer

Steps to follow:

  1. Open the Visual Basic Editor. In Excel, hit Alt+F11 if on Windows, Fn+Option+F11 if on a Mac.

  2. Insert a new module. From the menu: Insert -> Module (Don't skip this!).

  3. Create a Public function. Example:

    Public Function findArea(ByVal width as Double, _
                             ByVal height as Double) As Double
        ' Return the area
        findArea = width * height
    End Function

  4. Then use it in any cell like you would any other function: =findArea(B12,C12).

What does --net=host option in Docker command really do?

The --net=host option is used to make the programs inside the Docker container look like they are running on the host itself, from the perspective of the network. It allows the container greater network access than it can normally get.

Normally you have to forward ports from the host machine into a container, but when the containers share the host's network, any network activity happens directly on the host machine - just as it would if the program was running locally on the host instead of inside a container.

While this does mean you no longer have to expose ports and map them to container ports, it means you have to edit your Dockerfiles to adjust the ports each container listens on, to avoid conflicts as you can't have two containers operating on the same host port. However, the real reason for this option is for running apps that need network access that is difficult to forward through to a container at the port level.

For example, if you want to run a DHCP server then you need to be able to listen to broadcast traffic on the network, and extract the MAC address from the packet. This information is lost during the port forwarding process, so the only way to run a DHCP server inside Docker is to run the container as --net=host.

Generally speaking, --net=host is only needed when you are running programs with very specific, unusual network needs.

Lastly, from a security perspective, Docker containers can listen on many ports, even though they only advertise (expose) a single port. Normally this is fine as you only forward the single expected port, however if you use --net=host then you'll get all the container's ports listening on the host, even those that aren't listed in the Dockerfile. This means you will need to check the container closely (especially if it's not yours, e.g. an official one provided by a software project) to make sure you don't inadvertently expose extra services on the machine.

Java: Casting Object to Array type

What you've got (according to the debug image) is an object array containing a string array. So you need something like:

Object[] objects = (Object[]) values;
String[] strings = (String[]) objects[0];

You haven't shown the type of values - if this is already Object[] then you could just use (String[])values[0].

Of course even with the cast to Object[] you could still do it in one statement, but it's ugly:

String[] strings = (String[]) ((Object[])values)[0];

Detect click outside React component

None of the other answers here worked for me. I was trying to hide a popup on blur, but since the contents were absolutely positioned, the onBlur was firing even on the click of inner contents too.

Here is an approach that did work for me:

// Inside the component:
onBlur(event) {
    // currentTarget refers to this component.
    // relatedTarget refers to the element where the user clicked (or focused) which
    // triggered this event.
    // So in effect, this condition checks if the user clicked outside the component.
    if (!event.currentTarget.contains(event.relatedTarget)) {
        // do your thing.
    }
},

Hope this helps.

How to unzip a list of tuples into individual lists?

Use zip(*list):

>>> l = [(1,2), (3,4), (8,9)]
>>> list(zip(*l))
[(1, 3, 8), (2, 4, 9)]

The zip() function pairs up the elements from all inputs, starting with the first values, then the second, etc. By using *l you apply all tuples in l as separate arguments to the zip() function, so zip() pairs up 1 with 3 with 8 first, then 2 with 4 and 9. Those happen to correspond nicely with the columns, or the transposition of l.

zip() produces tuples; if you must have mutable list objects, just map() the tuples to lists or use a list comprehension to produce a list of lists:

map(list, zip(*l))          # keep it a generator
[list(t) for t in zip(*l)] # consume the zip generator into a list of lists

Simple argparse example wanted: 1 argument, 3 results

I went through all the examples and answers and in a way or another they didn't address my need. So I will list her a scenario that I need more help and I hope this can explain the idea more.

Initial Problem

I need to develop a tool which is getting a file to process it and it needs some optional configuration file to be used to configure the tool.

so what I need is something like the following

mytool.py file.text -config config-file.json

The solution

Here is the solution code

import argparse

def main():
    parser = argparse.ArgumentParser(description='This example for a tool to process a file and configure the tool using a config file.')
    parser.add_argument('filename', help="Input file either text, image or video")
    # parser.add_argument('config_file', help="a JSON file to load the initial configuration ")
    # parser.add_argument('-c', '--config_file', help="a JSON file to load the initial configuration ", default='configFile.json', required=False)
    parser.add_argument('-c', '--config', default='configFile.json', dest='config_file', help="a JSON file to load the initial configuration " )
    parser.add_argument('-d', '--debug', action="store_true", help="Enable the debug mode for logging debug statements." )

    args = parser.parse_args()

    filename = args.filename
    configfile = args.config_file

    print("The file to be processed is", filename)
    print("The config file is", configfile)

    if args.debug:
        print("Debug mode enabled")
    else:
        print("Debug mode disabled")

    print("and all arguments are: ", args)

if __name__ == '__main__':
    main()

I will show the solution in multiple enhancements to show the idea

First Round: List the arguments

List all input as mandatory inputs so second argument will be

parser.add_argument('config_file', help="a JSON file to load the initial configuration ")

When we get the help command for this tool we find the following outcome

(base) > python .\argparser_example.py -h
usage: argparser_example.py [-h] filename config_file

This example for a tool to process a file and configure the tool using a config file.

positional arguments:
  filename Input file either text, image or video
  config_file a JSON file to load the initial configuration

optional arguments:
  -h, --help show this help message and exit

and when I execute it as the following

(base) > python .\argparser_example.py filename.txt configfile.json

the outcome will be

The file to be processed is filename.txt
The config file is configfile.json
and all arguments are: Namespace(config_file='configfile.json', filename='filename.txt')

But the config file should be optional, I removed it from the arguments

(base) > python .\argparser_example.py filename.txt

The outcome will be is:

usage: argparser_example.py [-h] filename config_file
argparser_example.py: error: the following arguments are required: c

Which means we have a problem in the tool

Second Round : Make it optimal

So to make it optional I modified the program as follows

    parser.add_argument('-c', '--config', help="a JSON file to load the initial configuration ", default='configFile.json', required=False)

The help outcome should be

usage: argparser_example.py [-h] [-c CONFIG] filename

This example for a tool to process a file and configure the tool using a config file.

positional arguments:
  filename Input file either text, image or video

optional arguments:
  -h, --help show this help message and exit
  -c CONFIG, --config CONFIG
                        a JSON file to load the initial configuration

so when I execute the program

(base) > python .\argparser_example.py filename.txt

the outcome will be

The file to be processed is filename.txt
The config file is configFile.json
and all arguments are: Namespace(config_file='configFile.json', filename='filename.txt')

with arguments like

(base) > python .\argparser_example.py filename.txt --config_file anotherConfig.json

The outcome will be

The file to be processed is filename.txt
The config file is anotherConfig.json
and all arguments are: Namespace(config_file='anotherConfig.json', filename='filename.txt')

Round 3: Enhancements

to change the flag name from --config_file to --config while we keep the variable name as is we modify the code to include dest='config_file' as the following:

parser.add_argument('-c', '--config', help="a JSON file to load the initial configuration ", default='configFile.json', dest='config_file')

and the command will be

(base) > python .\argparser_example.py filename.txt --config anotherConfig.json

To add the support for having a debug mode flag, we need to add a flag in the arguments to support a boolean debug flag. To implement it i added the following:

    parser.add_argument('-d', '--debug', action="store_true", help="Enable the debug mode for logging debug statements." )

the tool command will be:

(carnd-term1-38) > python .\argparser_example.py image.jpg -c imageConfig,json --debug

the outcome will be

The file to be processed is image.jpg
The config file is imageConfig,json
Debug mode enabled
and all arguments are:  Namespace(config_file='imageConfig,json', debug=True, filename='image.jpg')

How do I measure time elapsed in Java?

Which types to use in order to accomplish this in Java?

Answer: long

public class Stream {
    public long startTime;
    public long endTime;

    public long getDuration() {
        return endTime - startTime;
    }
    // I  would add
    public void start() {
        startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
    }
    public void stop() {
         endTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
     }
}

Usage:

  Stream s = ....

  s.start();

  // do something for a while

  s.stop();

  s.getDuration(); // gives the elapsed time in milliseconds.

That's my direct answer for your first question.

For the last "note" I would suggest you to use Joda Time. It contains an interval class suitable for what you need.

Send FormData with other field in AngularJS

Here is the complete solution

html code,

create the text anf file upload fields as shown below

    <div class="form-group">
        <div>
            <label for="usr">User Name:</label>
            <input type="text" id="usr" ng-model="model.username">
        </div>
        <div>
            <label for="pwd">Password:</label>
            <input type="password" id="pwd" ng-model="model.password">
        </div><hr>
        <div>
            <div class="col-lg-6">
                <input type="file" file-model="model.somefile"/>
            </div>

        </div>
        <div>
            <label for="dob">Dob:</label>
            <input type="date" id="dob" ng-model="model.dob">
        </div>
        <div>
            <label for="email">Email:</label>
            <input type="email"id="email" ng-model="model.email">
        </div>

        <button type="submit" ng-click="saveData(model)" >Submit</button>

directive code

create a filemodel directive to parse file

.directive('fileModel', ['$parse', function ($parse) {
return {
    restrict: 'A',
    link: function(scope, element, attrs) {
        var model = $parse(attrs.fileModel);
        var modelSetter = model.assign;

        element.bind('change', function(){
            scope.$apply(function(){
                modelSetter(scope, element[0].files[0]);
            });
        });
    }
};}]);

Service code

append the file and fields to form data and do $http.post as shown below remember to keep 'Content-Type': undefined

 .service('fileUploadService', ['$http', function ($http) {
    this.uploadFileToUrl = function(file, username, password, dob, email, uploadUrl){
        var myFormData = new FormData();

        myFormData.append('file', file);
        myFormData.append('username', username);
        myFormData.append('password', password);
        myFormData.append('dob', dob);
        myFormData.append('email', email);

        $http.post(uploadUrl, myFormData, {
            transformRequest: angular.identity,
            headers: {'Content-Type': undefined}
        })
            .success(function(){

            })
            .error(function(){
            });
    }
}]);

In controller

Now in controller call the service by sending required data to be appended in parameters,

$scope.saveData  = function(model){

Check if object exists in JavaScript

set Textbox value to one frame to inline frame using div alignmnt tabbed panel. So first of all, before set the value we need check selected tabbed panels frame available or not using following codes:

Javascript Code :

/////////////////////////////////////////
<script>

function set_TextID()
            {
                try
                    {
                        if(!parent.frames["entry"])
                            {
                            alert("Frame object not found");
                            }
                            else
                            {
                                var setText=document.getElementById("formx").value;
                                parent.frames["entry"].document.getElementById("form_id").value=setText;
                            }
                            if(!parent.frames["education"])
                            {
                            alert("Frame object not found");

                            }
                            else
                            {
                                var setText=document.getElementById("formx").value;
                                parent.frames["education"].document.getElementById("form_id").value=setText;
                            }
                            if(!parent.frames["contact"])
                            {
                            alert("Frame object not found");

                            }
                            else
                            {
                                var setText=document.getElementById("formx").value;
                                parent.frames["contact"].document.getElementById("form_id").value=setText;
                            }

                        }catch(exception){}

List files in local git repo?

git ls-tree --full-tree -r HEAD and git ls-files return all files at once. For a large project with hundreds or thousands of files, and if you are interested in a particular file/directory, you may find more convenient to explore specific directories. You can do it by obtaining the ID/SHA-1 of the directory that you want to explore and then use git cat-file -p [ID/SHA-1 of directory]. For example:

git cat-file -p 14032aabd85b43a058cfc7025dd4fa9dd325ea97
100644 blob b93a4953fff68df523aa7656497ee339d6026d64    glyphicons-halflings-regular.eot
100644 blob 94fb5490a2ed10b2c69a4a567a4fd2e4f706d841    glyphicons-halflings-regular.svg
100644 blob 1413fc609ab6f21774de0cb7e01360095584f65b    glyphicons-halflings-regular.ttf
100644 blob 9e612858f802245ddcbf59788a0db942224bab35    glyphicons-halflings-regular.woff
100644 blob 64539b54c3751a6d9adb44c8e3a45ba5a73b77f0    glyphicons-halflings-regular.woff2

In the example above, 14032aabd85b43a058cfc7025dd4fa9dd325ea97 is the ID/SHA-1 of the directory that I wanted to explore. In this case, the result was that four files within that directory were being tracked by my Git repo. If the directory had additional files, it would mean those extra files were not being tracked. You can add files using git add <file>... of course.

Multiple Indexes vs Multi-Column Indexes

Yes. I recommend you check out Kimberly Tripp's articles on indexing.

If an index is "covering", then there is no need to use anything but the index. In SQL Server 2005, you can also add additional columns to the index that are not part of the key which can eliminate trips to the rest of the row.

Having multiple indexes, each on a single column may mean that only one index gets used at all - you will have to refer to the execution plan to see what effects different indexing schemes offer.

You can also use the tuning wizard to help determine what indexes would make a given query or workload perform the best.

How to determine SSL cert expiration date from a PEM encoded certificate?

Same as accepted answer, But note that it works even with .crt file and not just .pem file, just in case if you are not able to find .pem file location.

openssl x509 -enddate -noout -in e71c8ea7fa97ad6c.crt

Result:

notAfter=Mar 29 06:15:00 2020 GMT

How do you append to an already existing string?

teststr=$'test1\n'
teststr+=$'test2\n'
echo "$teststr"

Running Java gives "Error: could not open `C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\amd64\jvm.cfg'"

Might be a slightly different cause, but that second issue occurs for me in scala 2.9.0.1 on Win7 (x64), though scala-2.9.1.final has already resolved this issue mentioned here:

\Java\jdk1.6.0_25\bin\java.exe was unexpected at this time.

My %JAVA_HOME% set to a path like this: c:\program files(x86)\Java\jdk...

Note the space and the parentheses.

If you change line 24 in %SCALA_HOME%\bin\scala.bat from:

if exist "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java.exe" set _JAVACMD=%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java.exe

to

if exist "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java.exe" set "_JAVACMD=%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java.exe"

It works fine. Note the quotes around the set command parameters, this will properly enclose any spaces and 'special' characters (eg: spaces and parentheses) in the variable's value.

Hope this helps someone else searching for an answer.

How to read a PEM RSA private key from .NET

I've tried the accepted answer for PEM-encoded PKCS#8 RSA private key and it resulted in PemException with malformed sequence in RSA private key message. The reason is that Org.BouncyCastle.OpenSsl.PemReader seems to only support PKCS#1 private keys.

I was able to get the private key by switching to Org.BouncyCastle.Utilities.IO.Pem.PemReader (note that type names match!) like this

private static RSAParameters GetRsaParameters(string rsaPrivateKey)
{
    var byteArray = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(rsaPrivateKey);
    using (var ms = new MemoryStream(byteArray))
    {
        using (var sr = new StreamReader(ms))
        {
            var pemReader = new Org.BouncyCastle.Utilities.IO.Pem.PemReader(sr);
            var pem = pemReader.ReadPemObject();
            var privateKey = PrivateKeyFactory.CreateKey(pem.Content);

            return DotNetUtilities.ToRSAParameters(privateKey as RsaPrivateCrtKeyParameters);
        }
    }
}

while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) - how many loops are being performed?

Considering only one row is returned, only one loop will be done in both cases. Though it will check for the loop entering condition twice on each.

Trigger change() event when setting <select>'s value with val() function

I separate it, and then use an identity comparison to dictate what is does next.

$("#selectField").change(function(){
  if(this.value === 'textValue1'){ $(".contentClass1").fadeIn(); }
  if(this.value === 'textValue2'){ $(".contentclass2").fadeIn(); }
});

cat, grep and cut - translated to python

you need to use os.system module to execute shell command

import os
os.system('command')

if you want to save the output for later use, you need to use subprocess module

import subprocess
child = subprocess.Popen('command',stdout=subprocess.PIPE,shell=True)
output = child.communicate()[0]

How do I add multiple "NOT LIKE '%?%' in the WHERE clause of sqlite3?

I'm not sure why you're avoiding the AND clause. It is the simplest solution.

Otherwise, you would need to do an INTERSECT of multiple queries:

SELECT word FROM table WHERE word NOT LIKE '%a%'
INTERSECT
SELECT word FROM table WHERE word NOT LIKE '%b%'
INTERSECT
SELECT word FROM table WHERE word NOT LIKE '%c%';

Alternatively, you can use a regular expression if your version of SQL supports it.

Fit Image into PictureBox

You could try changing the: SizeMode property of the PictureBox.

You could also set your image as the BackGroundImage of the PictureBox and try changing the BackGroundImageLayout to the correct mode.

What are C++ functors and their uses?

Functors are used in gtkmm to connect some GUI button to an actual C++ function or method.

If you use the pthread library to make your app multithreaded, Functors can help you.
To start a thread, one of the arguments of the pthread_create(..) is the function pointer to be executed on his own thread.
But there's one inconvenience. This pointer can't be a pointer to a method, unless it's a static method, or unless you specify it's class, like class::method. And another thing, the interface of your method can only be:

void* method(void* something)

So you can't run (in a simple obvious way), methods from your class in a thread without doing something extra.

A very good way of dealing with threads in C++, is creating your own Thread class. If you wanted to run methods from MyClass class, what I did was, transform those methods into Functor derived classes.

Also, the Thread class has this method: static void* startThread(void* arg)
A pointer to this method will be used as an argument to call pthread_create(..). And what startThread(..) should receive in arg is a void* casted reference to an instance in heap of any Functor derived class, which will be casted back to Functor* when executed, and then called it's run() method.

Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true either in a configuration

I realise there is an accepted answer, but this may help people. I found I had a similar problem with a ASP.NET site using NET 3.5 framework when running it in Visual Studio 2012 using IIS Express 8. I'd tried all of the above solutions and none worked - in the end running the solution in the in-built VS 2012 webserver worked. Not sure why, but I suspect it was a link between 3.5 framework and IIS 8.

How to increase image size of pandas.DataFrame.plot in jupyter notebook?

Try figsize param in df.plot(figsize=(width,height)):

df = pd.DataFrame({"a":[1,2],"b":[1,2]})
df.plot(figsize=(3,3));

enter image description here

df = pd.DataFrame({"a":[1,2],"b":[1,2]})
df.plot(figsize=(5,3));

enter image description here

The size in figsize=(5,3) is given in inches per (width, height)

ES6 Class Multiple inheritance

I will add my solution as well - I found it the most friendly for myself from what I read in this thread.

export const aggregate = (...mixins) => (Base) => {
  const copyProps = (target, source) => {
    Object.getOwnPropertyNames(source)
      .concat(Object.getOwnPropertySymbols(source))
      .forEach((prop) => {
        if (prop.match(/^(?:constructor|prototype|arguments|caller|name|bind|call|apply|toString|length)$/)) {
          return;
        }
        Object.defineProperty(target, prop, Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor(source, prop));
      });
  };
  mixins.forEach((mixin) => {
    copyProps(Base, mixin);
    copyProps(Base.prototype, mixin.prototype);
  });
  return Base;
};

You can use it then like this:

class _MyBaseClass {}
const MyBaseClass = aggregate(ExtensionOne, ExtensionTwo)(_MyBaseClass);

How to convert a Java object (bean) to key-value pairs (and vice versa)?

Code generation would be the only other way I can think of. Personally, I'd got with a generally reusable reflection solution (unless that part of the code is absolutely performance-critical). Using JMS sounds like overkill (additional dependency, and that's not even what it's meant for). Besides, it probably uses reflection as well under the hood.

How do I check whether a checkbox is checked in jQuery?

This code will help you

$('#isAgeSelected').click(function(){
   console.log(this.checked);
   if(this.checked == true) {
        $("#txtAge").show();
    } else {
       $("#txtAge").hide();
   }
});

How should I pass multiple parameters to an ASP.Net Web API GET?

I just had to implement a RESTfull api where I need to pass parameters. I did this by passing the parameters in the query string in the same style as described by Mark's first example "api/controller?start=date1&end=date2"

In the controller I used a tip from URL split in C#?

// uri: /api/courses
public IEnumerable<Course> Get()
{
    NameValueCollection nvc = HttpUtility.ParseQueryString(Request.RequestUri.Query);
    var system = nvc["System"];
    // BL comes here
    return _courses;
}

In my case I was calling the WebApi via Ajax looking like:

$.ajax({
        url: '/api/DbMetaData',
        type: 'GET',
        data: { system : 'My System',
                searchString: '123' },
        dataType: 'json',
        success: function (data) {
                  $.each(data, function (index, v) {
                  alert(index + ': ' + v.name);
                  });
         },
         statusCode: {
                  404: function () {
                       alert('Failed');
                       }
        }
   });

I hope this helps...

Open an image using URI in Android's default gallery image viewer

A much cleaner, safer answer to this problem (you really shouldn't hard code Strings):

public void openInGallery(String imageId) {
  Uri uri = MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI.buildUpon().appendPath(imageId).build();
  Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri);
  startActivity(intent);
}

All you have to do is append the image id to the end of the path for the EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI. Then launch an Intent with the View action, and the Uri.

The image id comes from querying the content resolver.

Why cannot change checkbox color whatever I do?

Let's say you have a checkbox with the class (bootstrap) .form-check-input. Then you can use an image for an example as the check mark.

SCSS code:

<input class="form-check-input" type="checkbox">
.form-check-input {
    width: 22px;
    height: 22px;
    -webkit-appearance: none;
    -moz-appearance: none;
    -o-appearance: none;
    appearance:none;
    outline: 1px solid blue;

    &:checked
    {
        background: white url('blue.svg') no-repeat;
        background-size: 20px 20px;
        background-position: 50% 50%;
    }
}
