jQuery: Setting select list 'selected' based on text, failing strangely

When an <option> isn't given a value="", the text becomes its value, so you can just use .val() on the <select> to set by value, like this:

Content-Type: application/json is just the content header. The content header is just information about the type of returned data, ex::JSON,image(png,jpg,etc..),html.

Keep in mind, that JSON in JavaScript is an array or object. If you want to see all the data, use console.log instead of alert:

If you want to alert the original JSON content as a string, then add single quotation marks ('):

In Office Excel 2003, when you programmatically set a range value with an array containing a large string, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Run-time error '1004'. Application-defined or operation-defined error.

This issue may occur if one or more of the cells in an array (range of cells) contain a character string that is set to contain more than 911 characters.

To work around this issue, edit the script so that no cells in the array contain a character string that holds more than 911 characters.

For example, the following line of code from the example code block below defines a character string that contains 912 characters:

This method checks the returned string for a text value, empty string, or "cancel" (the getUserInput method returns "cancel" if the cancel button is clicked) and acts accordingly. If the user didn't enter anything and clicked OK it will tell the user and ask them if they want to cancel or re-enter their text.

Post notes: In my own implementation I found that all of the other answers were missing 1 or more of the following:

A cancel button
The ability to contain symbols in the string sent to the method
How to access the method and handle the returned value.

Thus, I have posted my own solution. I hope someone finds it useful. Credit to Bas and Gideon + commenters for your contributions, you helped me to come up with a workable solution!

Answer 1:

Downloading bootstrap through npm (or bower) permits you to gain some latency time. Instead of getting a remote resource, you get a local one, it's quicker, except if you use a cdn (check below answer)

Why use static_cast<int>(x) instead of (int)x?

Allows casts to be found easily in your code using grep or similar tools.

This is the best way I've seen to find the last cell.

One of the disadvantages to using this is that it's not always accurate. If you use it then delete the last few rows and use it again, it does not always update. Saving your workbook before using this seems to force it to update though.

Using the next bit of code after updating the table (or refreshing the query that feeds the table) forces everything to update before finding the last row. But, it's been reported that it makes excel crash. Either way, calling this before trying to find the last row will ensure the table has finished updating first.

Another way to get the last row for any given column, if you don't mind the overhead.

If you remove the ScrollViewer.VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Visible" then the scroll bars only appear when you have need of them.

The warning message Pseudo-terminal will not be allocated because stdin is not a terminal. is due to the fact that no command is specified for ssh while stdin is redirected from a here document. Due to the lack of a specified command as an argument ssh first expects an interactive login session (which would require the allocation of a pty on the remote host) but then has to realize that its local stdin is no tty/pty. Redirecting ssh's stdin from a here document normally requires a command (such as /bin/sh) to be specified as an argument to ssh - and in such a case no pty will be allocated on the remote host by default.

Since there are no commands to be executed via ssh that require the presence of a tty/pty (such as vim or top) the -t switch to ssh is superfluous. Just use ssh -T user@server <<EOT ... or ssh user@server /bin/bash <<EOT ... and the warning will go away.

If <<EOF is not escaped or single-quoted (i. e. <<\EOT or <<'EOT') variables inside the here document will be expanded by the local shell before it is executing ssh .... The effect is that the variables inside the here document will remain empty because they are defined only in the remote shell.

So, if $REL_DIR should be both accessible by the local shell and defined in the remote shell, $REL_DIR has to be defined outside the here document before the ssh command (version 1 below); or, if <<\EOT or <<'EOT' is used, the output of the ssh command can be assigned to REL_DIR if the only output of the ssh command to stdout is genererated by echo "$REL_DIR" inside the escaped/single-quoted here document (version 2 below).

A third option would be to store the here document in a variable and then pass this variable as a command argument to ssh -t user@server "$heredoc" (version 3 below).

And, last but not least, it would be no bad idea to check if the directories on the remote host were created successfully (see: check if file exists on remote host with ssh).

So generally this has been solved, but you might get this error message because the date you use is not in the correct format.

If you have dates of this format just check the format of your dates with:

str(sides$date)

If the format is not a character, then convert it:

Not only is it clumsy, it involves mutating the original parameter in some way manually eg by changing the original parameter to a list: or copying it to another list rather than just saying: "use this parameter as a value " or "use this one as a reference". Could the simple answer be there is no reserved word for this but these are great work arounds?

Storing JSON in database vs. having a new column for each key

Given that this question/answer have gained some popularity, I figured it was worth an update.

When this question was originally posted, MySQL had no support for JSON data types and the support in PostgreSQL was in its infancy. Since 5.7, MySQL now supports a JSON data type (in a binary storage format), and PostgreSQL JSONB has matured significantly. Both products provide performant JSON types that can store arbitrary documents, including support for indexing specific keys of the JSON object.

However, I still stand by my original statement that your default preference, when using a relational database, should still be column-per-value. Relational databases are still built on the assumption of that the data within them will be fairly well normalized. The query planner has better optimization information when looking at columns than when looking at keys in a JSON document. Foreign keys can be created between columns (but not between keys in JSON documents). Importantly: if the majority of your schema is volatile enough to justify using JSON, you might want to at least consider if a relational database is the right choice.

That said, few applications are perfectly relational or document-oriented. Most applications have some mix of both. Here are some examples where I personally have found JSON useful in a relational database:

When storing email addresses and phone numbers for a contact, where storing them as values in a JSON array is much easier to manage than multiple separate tables
Saving arbitrary key/value user preferences (where the value can be boolean, textual, or numeric, and you don't want to have separate columns for different data types)
Storing configuration data that has no defined schema (if you're building Zapier, or IFTTT and need to store configuration data for each integration)

I'm sure there are others as well, but these are just a few quick examples.

If you really want to be able to add as many fields as you want with no limitation (other than an arbitrary document size limit), consider a NoSQL solution such as MongoDB.

For relational databases: use one column per value. Putting a JSON blob in a column makes it virtually impossible to query (and painfully slow when you actually find a query that works).

Relational databases take advantage of data types when indexing, and are intended to be implemented with a normalized structure.

As a side note: this isn't to say you should never store JSON in a relational database. If you're adding true metadata, or if your JSON is describing information that does not need to be queried and is only used for display, it may be overkill to create a separate column for all of the data points.

Creating a singleton in Python

Here's my own implementation of singletons. All you have to do is decorate the class; to get the singleton, you then have to use the Instance method. Here's an example:

split() is your friend here. I will cover a few aspects of split() that are not covered by other answers.

If no arguments are passed to split(), it would split the string based on whitespace characters (space, tab, and newline). Leading and trailing whitespace is ignored. Also, consecutive whitespaces are treated as a single delimiter.

Example:

['one', 'two', 'three', 'four', 'five']

When a single character delimiter is passed, split() behaves quite differently from its default behavior. In this case, leading/trailing delimiters are not ignored, repeating delimiters are not "coalesced" into one either.

This is an old thread, but I stumbled across it when trying to solve a similar problem.

For me, I got this particular error relating to the php_wincache.dll. I was in the process of updating PHP from 5.5.38 to 5.6.31 on a Windows server. For some reason, not all of the DLL files updated with the newest versions. Most did, but some didn't.

So, if you get an error similar to this, make sure all the extensions are in place and updated.

LPCSTR, LPCTSTR and LPTSTR

To answer the second part of your question, you need to do things like

dispinfo.item.pszText = LPTSTR((LPCTSTR)string);

because MS's LVITEM struct has an LPTSTR, i.e. a mutable T-string pointer, not an LPCTSTR. What you are doing is

1) convert string (a CString at a guess) into an LPCTSTR (which in practise means getting the address of its character buffer as a read-only pointer)

2) convert that read-only pointer into a writeable pointer by casting away its const-ness.

It depends what dispinfo is used for whether or not there is a chance that your ListView call will end up trying to write through that pszText. If it does, this is a potentially very bad thing: after all you were given a read-only pointer and then decided to treat it as writeable: maybe there is a reason it was read-only!

If it is a CString you are working with you have the option to use string.GetBuffer() -- that deliberately gives you a writeable LPTSTR. You then have to remember to call ReleaseBuffer() if the string does get changed. Or you can allocate a local temporary buffer and copy the string into there.

99% of the time this will be unnecessary and treating the LPCTSTR as an LPTSTR will work... but one day, when you least expect it...

if d is the matrix (or the original data frame) and the column names are what you want, then the following works:

las=0 would flip the names back to their normal position, mine were long, so I used las=2 to make them perpendicular to the axis.

When to use "ON UPDATE CASCADE"

It's an excellent question, I had the same question yesterday. I thought about this problem, specifically SEARCHED if existed something like "ON UPDATE CASCADE" and fortunately the designers of SQL had also thought about that. I agree with Ted.strauss, and I also commented Noran's case.

When did I use it? Like Ted pointed out, when you are treating several databases at one time, and the modification in one of them, in one table, has any kind of reproduction in what Ted calls "satellite database", can't be kept with the very original ID, and for any reason you have to create a new one, in case you can't update the data on the old one (for example due to permissions, or in case you are searching for fastness in a case that is so ephemeral that doesn't deserve the absolute and utter respect for the total rules of normalization, simply because will be a very short-lived utility)

So, I agree in two points:

(A.) Yes, in many times a better design can avoid it; BUT

(B.) In cases of migrations, replicating databases, or solving emergencies, it's a GREAT TOOL that fortunately was there when I went to search if it existed.

Finalize vs Dispose

The finalizer method is called when your object is garbage collected and you have no guarantee when this will happen (you can force it, but it will hurt performance).

The Dispose method on the other hand is meant to be called by the code that created your class so that you can clean up and release any resources you have acquired (unmanaged data, database connections, file handles, etc) the moment the code is done with your object.

The standard practice is to implement IDisposable and Dispose so that you can use your object in a using statment. Such as using(var foo = new MyObject()) { }. And in your finalizer, you call Dispose, just in case the calling code forgot to dispose of you.

How to stop docker under Linux

The output of ps aux looks like you did not start docker through systemd/systemctl.

It looks like you started it with:

sudo dockerd -H gridsim1103:2376

When you try to stop it with systemctl, nothing should happen as the resulting dockerd process is not controlled by systemd. So the behavior you see is expected.

The correct way to start docker is to use systemd/systemctl:

systemctl enable docker
systemctl start docker

After this, docker should start on system start.

EDIT: As you already have the docker process running, simply kill it by pressing CTRL+C on the terminal you started it. Or send a kill signal to the process.

Your proposed doCalculationsAndUpdateUIs does data processing and dispatches UI updates to the main queue. I presume that you have dispatched doCalculationsAndUpdateUIs to a background queue when you first called it.

While technically fine, that's a little fragile, contingent upon your remembering to dispatch it to the background every time you call it: I would, instead, suggest that you do your dispatch to the background and dispatch back to the main queue from within the same method, as it makes the logic unambiguous and more robust, etc.

Thus it might look like:

Dispatching code synchronously can cause problems (e.g. deadlocks) if done sloppily, so my general counsel is that you should probably only dispatch UI updates synchronously if there is some compelling need to do so, otherwise you should design your solution so you can dispatch them asynchronously.

In answer to your question as to whether this is the "best way to achieve this", it's hard for us to say without knowing more about the business problem being solved. For example, if you might be calling this doCalculationsAndUpdateUIs multiple times, I might be inclined to use my own serial queue rather than a concurrent global queue, in order to ensure that these don't step over each other. Or if you might need the ability to cancel this doCalculationsAndUpdateUIs when the user dismisses the scene or calls the method again, then I might be inclined to use a operation queue which offers cancelation capabilities. It depends entirely upon what you're trying to achieve.

But, in general, the pattern of asynchronously dispatching a complicated task to a background queue and then asynchronously dispatching the UI update back to the main queue is very common.

I use this in a reduce function, and it is just plain silly. Even if you have the ...array spread operator available, you should not use it in this case, as it wastes processor, memory, and time resources.

System.MissingMethodException: Method not found?

I ran into this issue, and what it was for me was one project was using a List which was in Example.Sensors namespace and and another type implemented the ISensorInfo interface. Class Type1SensorInfo, but this class was one layer deeper in the namespace at Example.Sensors.Type1. When trying to deserialize Type1SensorInfo into the list, it threw the exception. When I added using Example.Sensors.Type1 into the ISensorInfo interface, no more exception!

I wrote a relatively simple answer for this.

I have a table that's using one of the "sticky table header" plugins to stick right below a particular div on my page, but the menu to the left of the table didn't stick (as it's not part of the table.)

For my purposes, I knew the div that needed "stickiness" was always going to start at 385 pixels below the top of the window, so I created an empty div right above that:

Current best practice in CSS development is to create more general selectors with modifiers that can be applied as widely as possible throughout the web site. I would try to avoid defining separate styles for individual page elements.

When working with pennies/integers. You will run into a problem with 115 (as in $1.15) and other numbers.

I had a function that would convert an Integer to a Float.

return float(115 * 0.01)

That worked most of the time but sometimes it would return something like 1.1500000000000001.

So I changed my function to return like this...

return float(format(115 * 0.01, '.2f'))

and that will return 1.15. Not '1.15' or 1.1500000000000001 (returns a float, not a string)

1) Help Identify Memory Leaks - show you how many memory leaks you have, and point out to the lines in the code where the leaked memory was allocated.

2) Point out wrong attempts to free memory (e.g. improper call of delete)

Instructions for using "Valgrind"

1) Get valgrind here.

2) Compile your code with -g flag

3) In your shell run:

valgrind --leak-check=yes myprog arg1 arg2

Where "myprog" is your compiled program and arg1, arg2 your programme's arguments.

4) The result is a list of calls to malloc/new that did not have subsequent calls to free delete.

For example:

i faced the same issue under IIS 8.5. A working solution for me was changing the IIS to display detailled errors. See answer from sna2stha. But i think it is not a good idea to forward detailed error messages to browsers in production enviroments. I added/changed the existingResponse attribute in the httpErrors-Section, so the IIS not handled any extisting Asp.net Response:

These are all parts of the X.500 Directory Specification, which defines nodes in a LDAP directory.

The toFixed method will do the appropriate rounding if necessary. It will also add trailing zeroes, which is not always ideal.

To solve this without jQuery .each() you'd have to fix your code like this:

Bugs in your original code:

for ... in will also loop through all inherited properties; i.e. you will also get a list of all functions that are defined by jQuery.
The loop variable li is not the list item, but the index to the list item. In that case the index is a normal array index (i.e. an integer)

Basically you are save to use .each() as it is more comfortable, but espacially when you are looping bigger arrays the code in this answer will be much faster.

MongoDB vs. Cassandra

Lots of reads in every query, fewer regular writes

Both databases perform well on reads where the hot data set fits in memory. Both also emphasize join-less data models (and encourage denormalization instead), and both provide indexes on documents or rows, although MongoDB's indexes are currently more flexible.

Cassandra's storage engine provides constant-time writes no matter how big your data set grows. Writes are more problematic in MongoDB, partly because of the b-tree based storage engine, but more because of the multi-granularity locking it does.

For analytics, MongoDB provides a custom map/reduce implementation; Cassandra provides native Hadoop support, including for Hive (a SQL data warehouse built on Hadoop map/reduce) and Pig (a Hadoop-specific analysis language that many think is a better fit for map/reduce workloads than SQL). Cassandra also supports use of Spark.

Not worried about "massive" scalability

If you're looking at a single server, MongoDB is probably a better fit. For those more concerned about scaling, Cassandra's no-single-point-of-failure architecture will be easier to set up and more reliable. (MongoDB's global write lock tends to become more painful, too.) Cassandra also gives a lot more control over how your replication works, including support for multiple data centers.

More concerned about simple setup, maintenance and code

Both are trivial to set up, with reasonable out-of-the-box defaults for a single server. Cassandra is simpler to set up in a multi-server configuration since there are no special-role nodes to worry about.

If you're presently using JSON blobs, MongoDB is an insanely good match for your use case, given that it uses BSON to store the data. You'll be able to have richer and more queryable data than you would in your present database. This would be the most significant win for Mongo.
