Merge squash merges a tree (a sequence of commits) into a single commit. That is, it squashes all changes made in n commits into a single commit.

Rebasing is re-basing, that is, choosing a new base (parent commit) for a tree. Maybe the mercurial term for this is more clear: they call it transplant because it's just that: picking a new ground (parent commit, root) for a tree.

I actually think this is a pretty interesting implementation. Because it subclasses the class it decorates, it will behave exactly like this class in things like isinstance checks.

It has an added benefit: it's not uncommon for the __init__ statement in a custom django Form to make modifications or additions to self.fields so it's better for changes to self.fields to happen after all of __init__ has run for the class in question.

Very clever.

However, in your class you actually want the decoration to alter the constructor, which I don't think is a good use case for a class decorator.

Difference between timestamps with/without time zone in PostgreSQL

The differences are covered at the PostgreSQL documentation for date/time types. Yes, the treatment of TIME or TIMESTAMP differs between one WITH TIME ZONE or WITHOUT TIME ZONE. It doesn't affect how the values are stored; it affects how they are interpreted.

The effects of time zones on these data types is covered specifically in the docs. The difference arises from what the system can reasonably know about the value:

  • With a time zone as part of the value, the value can be rendered as a local time in the client.

  • Without a time zone as part of the value, the obvious default time zone is UTC, so it is rendered for that time zone.

The behaviour differs depending on at least three factors:

  • The timezone setting in the client.
  • The data type (i.e. WITH TIME ZONE or WITHOUT TIME ZONE) of the value.
  • Whether the value is specified with a particular time zone.

Here are examples covering the combinations of those factors:

It will be bigger in base64.

Base64 uses 6 bits per byte to encode data, whereas binary uses 8 bits per byte. Also, there is a little padding overhead with Base64. Not all bits are used with Base64 because it was developed in the first place to encode binary data on systems that can only correctly process non-binary data.

That means that the encoded image will be around 33%-36% larger (33% from not using 2 of the bits per byte, plus possible padding accounting for the remaining 3%).

I encountered this issue while importing some of the files from the Add Health data into R (see: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/ICPSR/studies/21600?archive=ICPSR&q=21600 ) For example, the following command to read the DS12 data file in tab separated .tsv format will generate the following error:

Error in scan(file, what, nmax, sep, dec, quote, skip, nlines,

It appears there is a slight formatting issue with some of the files that causes R to reject the file. At least part of the issue appears to be the occasional use of double quotes instead of an apostrophe that causes an uneven number of double quote characters in a line.

After fiddling, I've identified three possible solutions:

  1. Open the file in a text editor and search/replace all instances of a quote character " with nothing. In other words, delete all double quotes. For this tab-delimited data, this meant only that some verbatim excerpts of comments from subjects were no longer in quotes which was a non-issue for my data analysis.

  2. With data stored on ICPSR (see link above) or other archives another solution is to download the data in a new format. A good option in this case is to download the Stata version of the DS12 and then open it using the read.dta command as follows:

  3. A related solution/hack is to open the .tsv file in Excel and re-save it as a tab separated text file. This seems to clean up whatever formatting issue makes R unhappy.

None of these are ideal in that they don't quite solve the problem in R with the original .tsv file but data wrangling often requires the use of multiple programs and formats.

if you experience this exception while using intellij and you are trying to start the application with the run button. Try starting the application from the command line instead. E.g. ensure that you are in the correct directory (directory with your pom file) assuming this is a springboot application run mvn spring-boot:run this did the trick for me.

Additionally I have also seen this error occur when your spring application depends on another application. In this case I had to start the other application first then run.

The difference, again, is that isinstance supports subclasses that can be substituted for the parent without otherwise breaking the program, a property known as Liskov substitution.

Even better, though, invert your dependencies and don't check for specific types at all.

Conclusion

So since we want to support substituting subclasses, in most cases, we want to avoid type-checking with type and prefer type-checking with isinstance - unless you really need to know the precise class of an instance.

What's better at freeing memory with PHP: unset() or $var = null

Regarding objects, especially in lazy-load scenario, one should consider garbage collector is running in idle CPU cycles, so presuming you're going into trouble when a lot of objects are loading small time penalty will solve the memory freeing.

Use time_nanosleep to enable GC to collect memory. Setting variable to null is desirable.

Tested on production server, originally the job consumed 50MB and then was halted. After nanosleep was used 14MB was constant memory consumption.

One should say this depends on GC behaviour which may change from PHP version to version. But it works on PHP 5.3 fine.

All other answers here seem to complicate too much. Python is already buffering when reading (in ideal manner, or you configure that buffering if you have more information about underlying storage) and so it is better to read in chunks the hash function finds ideal which makes it faster or at lest less CPU intensive to compute the hash function. So instead of disabling buffering and trying to emulate it yourself, you use Python buffering and control what you should be controlling: what the consumer of your data finds ideal, hash block size.

Finding the median of an unsorted array

I have already upvoted the @dasblinkenlight answer since the Median of Medians algorithm in fact solves this problem in O(n) time. I only want to add that this problem could be solved in O(n) time by using heaps also. Building a heap could be done in O(n) time by using the bottom-up. Supposing that your array has N elements, you have to build two heaps: A MaxHeap that contains the first N/2 elements (or (N/2)+1 if N is odd) and a MinHeap that contains the remaining elements. If N is odd then your median is the maximum element of MaxHeap (O(1) by getting the max). If N is even, then your median is (MaxHeap.max()+MinHeap.min())/2 this takes O(1) also. Thus, the real cost of the whole operation is the heaps building operation which is O(n).

BTW this MaxHeap/MinHeap algorithm works also when you don't know the number of the array elements beforehand (if you have to resolve the same problem for a stream of integers for e.g). You can see more details about how to resolve this problem in the following article Median Of integer streams

Huge performance difference when using group by vs distinct

The two queries express the same question. Apparently the query optimizer chooses two different execution plans. My guess would be that the distinct approach is executed like:

  • Copy all business_key values to a temporary table
  • Sort the temporary table
  • Scan the temporary table, returning each item that is different from the one before it

The group by could be executed like:

  • Scan the full table, storing each value of business key in a hashtable
  • Return the keys of the hashtable

The first method optimizes for memory usage: it would still perform reasonably well when part of the temporary table has to be swapped out. The second method optimizes for speed, but potentially requires a large amount of memory if there are a lot of different keys.

Since you either have enough memory or few different keys, the second method outperforms the first. It's not unusual to see performance differences of 10x or even 100x between two execution plans.

How do you specify the Java compiler version in a pom.xml file?

Generally you don't want to value only the source version (javac -source 1.8 for example) but you want to value both the source and the target version (javac -source 1.8 -target 1.8 for example).
Note that from Java 9, you have a way to convey both information and in a more robust way for cross-compilation compatibility (javac -release 9).
Maven that wraps the javac command provides multiple ways to convey all these JVM standard options.

So this translates to…If "FieldName" is NULL, populate the field value with the word "EMPTY".

Now for mutliple values...

Coalesce(FieldName1, FieldName2, Value2, Value3)

If the value in Fieldname1 is null, fill it with the value in Fieldname2, if FieldName2 is NULL, fill it with Value2, etc.

SET ARITHABORT must be ON when you are creating or changing indexes on computed columns or indexed views. If SET ARITHABORT is OFF, CREATE, UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE statements on tables with indexes on computed columns or indexed views will fail.

So to get this to work correctly I did this

Right click [Database]-->Properties-->Options-->Other Options-->Misscellaneous-->Arithmetic Abort Enabled -->true

I believe it is possible to set this option in code using

ALTER DATABASE "DBNAME" SET ARITHABORT ON

I don't think you can turn JavaScript objects into JSON strings using only jQuery, assuming you need the JSON string as output.

Depending on the browsers you are targeting, you can use the JSON.stringify function to produce JSON strings.

If it is, Autocompleter does not cal onBlur, else it calls onBlur. The only problem with this is that it only works in Firefox because explicitOriginalTarget property is Mozilla specific . Now I am trying to find a different way than using explicitOriginalTarget. The solution you have mentioned requires you to add onclick behaviour manually to the element. If I can't manage to solve explicitOriginalTarget issue, I guess I will follow your solution.

Hopefully, this will be of value to someone out there - I went through half a dozen stackoverflow posts trying to figure out relative imports similar to whats posted above here. I set up everything as suggested but I was still hitting ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'my_module_name'

Since I was just developing locally and playing around, I hadn't created/run a setup.py file. I also hadn't apparently set my PYTHONPATH.

I realized that when I ran my code as I had been when the tests were in the same directory as the module, I couldn't find my module:

Some of the other answers seem to imply that polymorphism is used only in conjunction with inheritance; for example, maybe Fraction and ComplexNumber both implement an abstract class called Number that has a method display(), which Fraction and ComplexNumber are then both obligated to implement. But you don't need inheritance to take advantage of polymorphism.

At least in dynamically-typed languages like PHP (I don't know about C++ or Java), polymorphism allows the developer to call a method without necessarily knowing the type of object ahead of time, and trusting that the correct implementation of the method will be called. For example, say the user chooses the type of Number created:

Is there a way to provide named parameters in a function call in JavaScript?

Lot's of people say to just use the "Pass an object" trick so that you have named parameters.

And that works great, except..... when it comes to most IDEs out there, a lot of us developers rely on type / argument hints within our IDE. I personally use PHP Storm (Along with other JetBrains IDEs like PyCharm for python and AppCode for Objective C)

And the biggest problem with using the "Pass an object" trick is that when you are calling the function, the IDE gives you a single type hint and that's it... How are we supposed to know what parameters and types should go into the arg1 object?

I have no idea what parameters should go in arg1

So... the "Pass an object" trick doesn't work for me... It actually causes more headaches with having to look at each function's docblock before I know what parameters the function expects.... Sure, it's great for when you are maintaining existing code, but it's horrible for writing new code.

Well, this is the technique I use.... Now, there may be some issues with it, and some developers may tell me I'm doing it wrong, and I have an open mind when it comes to these things... I am always willing to look at better ways of accomplishing a task... So, if there is an issue with this technique, then comments are welcome.

Here I have an onItemClick. I create intent and putExtra an entire class into the intent. The class I'm sending has implemented parcelable. Tip: You only need implement the parseable over what is minimally needed to re-create the class. We have a utility function, something like this:

Why should text files end with a newline?

This originates from the very early days when simple terminals were used. The newline char was used to trigger a 'flush' of the transferred data.

Today, the newline char isn't required anymore. Sure, many apps still have problems if the newline isn't there, but I'd consider that a bug in those apps.

If however you have a text file format where you require the newline, you get simple data verification very cheap: if the file ends with a line that has no newline at the end, you know the file is broken. With only one extra byte for each line, you can detect broken files with high accuracy and almost no CPU time.

Classes residing in App_Code is not accessible

Put this at the top of the other files where you want to access the class:

Not sure if that's your issue or not but if you were new to C# then this is an easy one to get tripped up on.

Update: I recently found that if I add an App_Code folder to a project, then I must close/reopen Visual Studio for it to properly recognize this "special" folder.

Arrays.asList does not return a java.util.ArrayList, so you can't assign the return value of Arrays.asList to a variable of type ArrayList.

killall sends a signal to all processes running any of the specified commands. If no signal name is specified, SIGTERM is sent.

If the command name is not regular expression (option -r) and contains a slash (/), processes executing that particular file will be selected for killing, independent of their name.

SO thread 'Multiply two arrays element wise, where one of the arrays has arrays as elements' has an example of constructing an array from arrays. If the subarrays are the same size, numpy makes a 2d array. But if they differ in length, it makes an array with dtype=object, and the subarrays retain their identity.

Following that, you could do something like this:

When to use pthread_exit() and when to use pthread_join() in Linux?

The pthread_exit() API

as has been already remarked, is used for the calling thread termination. After a call to that function a complicating clean up mechanism is started. When it completes the thread is terminated. The pthread_exit() API is also called implicitly when a call to the return() routine occurs in a thread created by pthread_create(). Actually, a call to return() and a call to pthread_exit() have the same impact, being called from a thread created by pthread_create().

It is very important to distinguish the initial thread, implicitly created when the main() function starts, and threads created by pthread_create(). A call to the return() routine from the main() function implicitly invokes the exit() system call and the entire process terminates. No thread clean up mechanism is started. A call to the pthread_exit() from the main() function causes the clean up mechanism to start and when it finishes its work the initial thread terminates.

What happens to the entire process (and to other threads) when pthread_exit() is called from the main() function depends on the PTHREAD implementation. For example, on IBM OS/400 implementation the entire process is terminated, including other threads, when pthread_exit() is called from the main() function. Other systems may behave differently. On most modern Linux machines a call to pthread_exit() from the initial thread does not terminate the entire process until all threads termination. Be careful using pthread_exit() from main(), if you want to write a portable application.

The pthread_join() API

is a convenient way to wait for a thread termination. You may write your own function that waits for a thread termination, perhaps more suitable to your application, instead of using pthread_join(). For example, it can be a function based on waiting on conditional variables.

I would recommend for reading a book of David R. Butenhof “Programming with POSIX Threads”. It explains the discussed topics (and more complicated things) very well (although some implementation details, such as pthread_exit usage in the main function, not always reflected in the book).

See here for an elaborate shit storm about null in general. I do not agree with the statement that undefined is another null, but it is still worth reading. And it explains, why you should avoid null at all and not just in the case you have asked. The essence is, that null is in any language a special case. You have to think about null as an exception. undefined is different in that way, that code dealing with undefined behavior is in most cases just a bug. C and most other languages have also undefined behavior but most of them have no identifier for that in the language.

From a new react/redux adopter migrating from (a few years of) ExtJS in mid-2018:

After sliding backward down the redux learning curve I had the same question and thought pure flux would be simpler like OP.

I soon saw the benefits of redux over flux as noted in the answers above, and was working it into my first app.

While getting a grip on the boiler plate again, I tried out a few of the other state management libs, the best I found was rematch.

It was much more intuitive then vanilla redux, it cuts out 90% of the boilerplate and cut out 75% of the time I was spending on redux (something I think a library should be doing), I was able to get a couple enterprise apps going right away.

It also runs with the same redux tooling. This is a good article that covers some of the benefits.

Understanding the results of Execute Explain Plan in Oracle SQL Developer

The output of EXPLAIN PLAN is a debug output from Oracle's query optimiser. The COST is the final output of the Cost-based optimiser (CBO), the purpose of which is to select which of the many different possible plans should be used to run the query. The CBO calculates a relative Cost for each plan, then picks the plan with the lowest cost.

(Note: in some cases the CBO does not have enough time to evaluate every possible plan; in these cases it just picks the plan with the lowest cost found so far)

In general, one of the biggest contributors to a slow query is the number of rows read to service the query (blocks, to be more precise), so the cost will be based in part on the number of rows the optimiser estimates will need to be read.

For example, lets say you have the following query:

SELECT emp_id FROM employees WHERE months_of_service = 6;

(The months_of_service column has a NOT NULL constraint on it and an ordinary index on it.)

There are two basic plans the optimiser might choose here:

  • Plan 1: Read all the rows from the "employees" table, for each, check if the predicate is true (months_of_service=6).
  • Plan 2: Read the index where months_of_service=6 (this results in a set of ROWIDs), then access the table based on the ROWIDs returned.

Let's imagine the "employees" table has 1,000,000 (1 million) rows. Let's further imagine that the values for months_of_service range from 1 to 12 and are fairly evenly distributed for some reason.

The cost of Plan 1, which involves a FULL SCAN, will be the cost of reading all the rows in the employees table, which is approximately equal to 1,000,000; but since Oracle will often be able to read the blocks using multi-block reads, the actual cost will be lower (depending on how your database is set up) - e.g. let's imagine the multi-block read count is 10 - the calculated cost of the full scan will be 1,000,000 / 10; Overal cost = 100,000.

The cost of Plan 2, which involves an INDEX RANGE SCAN and a table lookup by ROWID, will be the cost of scanning the index, plus the cost of accessing the table by ROWID. I won't go into how index range scans are costed but let's imagine the cost of the index range scan is 1 per row; we expect to find a match in 1 out of 12 cases, so the cost of the index scan is 1,000,000 / 12 = 83,333; plus the cost of accessing the table (assume 1 block read per access, we can't use multi-block reads here) = 83,333; Overall cost = 166,666.

As you can see, the cost of Plan 1 (full scan) is LESS than the cost of Plan 2 (index scan + access by rowid) - which means the CBO would choose the FULL scan.

If the assumptions made here by the optimiser are true, then in fact Plan 1 will be preferable and much more efficient than Plan 2 - which disproves the myth that FULL scans are "always bad".

The results would be quite different if the optimiser goal was FIRST_ROWS(n) instead of ALL_ROWS - in which case the optimiser would favour Plan 2 because it will often return the first few rows quicker, at the cost of being less efficient for the entire query.
