An RFC entitled "Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1"

Use of PUT vs PATCH methods in REST API real life scenarios

The difference between PUT and PATCH is that:

  1. PUT is required to be idempotent. In order to achieve that, you have to put the entire complete resource in the request body.
  2. PATCH can be non-idempotent. Which implies it can also be idempotent in some cases, such as the cases you described.

PATCH requires some "patch language" to tell the server how to modify the resource. The caller and the server need to define some "operations" such as "add", "replace", "delete". For example:

GET /contacts/1
{
  "id": 1,
  "name": "Sam Kwee",
  "email": "[email protected]",
  "state": "NY",
  "zip": "10001"
}

PATCH /contacts/1
{
 [{"operation": "add", "field": "address", "value": "123 main street"},
  {"operation": "replace", "field": "email", "value": "[email protected]"},
  {"operation": "delete", "field": "zip"}]
}

GET /contacts/1
{
  "id": 1,
  "name": "Sam Kwee",
  "email": "[email protected]",
  "state": "NY",
  "address": "123 main street",
}

Instead of using explicit "operation" fields, the patch language can make it implicit by defining conventions like:

in the PATCH request body:

  1. The existence of a field means "replace" or "add" that field.
  2. If the value of a field is null, it means delete that field.

With the above convention, the PATCH in the example can take the following form:

PATCH /contacts/1
{
  "address": "123 main street",
  "email": "[email protected]",
  "zip":
}

Which looks more concise and user-friendly. But the users need to be aware of the underlying convention.

With the operations I mentioned above, the PATCH is still idempotent. But if you define operations like: "increment" or "append", you can easily see it won't be idempotent anymore.

Do I need Content-Type: application/octet-stream for file download?

No.

The content-type should be whatever it is known to be, if you know it. application/octet-stream is defined as "arbitrary binary data" in RFC 2046, and there's a definite overlap here of it being appropriate for entities whose sole intended purpose is to be saved to disk, and from that point on be outside of anything "webby". Or to look at it from another direction; the only thing one can safely do with application/octet-stream is to save it to file and hope someone else knows what it's for.

You can combine the use of Content-Disposition with other content-types, such as image/png or even text/html to indicate you want saving rather than display. It used to be the case that some browsers would ignore it in the case of text/html but I think this was some long time ago at this point (and I'm going to bed soon so I'm not going to start testing a whole bunch of browsers right now; maybe later).

RFC 2616 also mentions the possibility of extension tokens, and these days most browsers recognise inline to mean you do want the entity displayed if possible (that is, if it's a type the browser knows how to display, otherwise it's got no choice in the matter). This is of course the default behaviour anyway, but it means that you can include the filename part of the header, which browsers will use (perhaps with some adjustment so file-extensions match local system norms for the content-type in question, perhaps not) as the suggestion if the user tries to save.

Hence:

Content-Type: application/octet-stream
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="picture.png"

Means "I don't know what the hell this is. Please save it as a file, preferably named picture.png".

Content-Type: image/png
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="picture.png"

Means "This is a PNG image. Please save it as a file, preferably named picture.png".

Content-Type: image/png
Content-Disposition: inline; filename="picture.png"

Means "This is a PNG image. Please display it unless you don't know how to display PNG images. Otherwise, or if the user chooses to save it, we recommend the name picture.png for the file you save it as".

Of those browsers that recognise inline some would always use it, while others would use it if the user had selected "save link as" but not if they'd selected "save" while viewing (or at least IE used to be like that, it may have changed some years ago).

HTTP status code 0 - Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain?

CORS in my case.

I had such response in a iOS app once. The solution was the missing Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * in the headers.

Difference between no-cache and must-revalidate

Agreed with part of @Jeffrey Fox's answer:

max-age=0, must-revalidate and no-cache aren't exactly identical.

Not agreed with this part:

With no-cache, it would just show the cached content, which would be probably preferred by the user (better to have something stale than nothing at all).

What should implementations do when cache-control: no-cache revalidation failed is just not specified in the RFC document. It's all up to implementations. They may throw a 504 error like cache-control: must-revalidate or just serve a stale copy from cache.

What is the http-header "X-XSS-Protection"?

TL;DR: All well written web sites (/apps) must emit the header X-XSS-Protection: 0 and just forget about this feature. If you want to have extra security that better user agents can provide, use a strict Content-Security-Policy header.

Long answer:

HTTP header X-XSS-Protection is one of those things that Microsoft introduced in Internet Explorer 8.0 (MSIE 8) that was supposed to improve security of incorrectly written web sites.

The idea is to apply some kind of heuristics to try to detect reflection XSS attack and automatically neuter the attack.

The problematic part of this is "heuristics" and "neutering". The heuristics causes false positives and neutering cannot be safely done because it causes side-effects that can be used to implement XSS attacks and DoS attacks on perfectly safe web sites.

The bad part is that if a web site does not emit the header X-XSS-Protection then the browser will behave as if the header X-XSS-Protection: 1 had been emitted. The worst part is that this value is the least-safe value of all possible values for this header!

For a given secure web site (that is, the site does not have reflected XSS vulnerabilities) this "XSS protection" feature allows following attacks:

X-XSS-Protection: 1 allows attacker to selectively block parts of JavaScript and keep rest of the scripts running. This is possible because the heuristics of this feature are simply "if value of any GET parameter is found in the scripting part of the page source, the script will be automatically modified in user agent dependant way". In practice, the attacker can e.g. add parameter disablexss=<script src="framebuster.js" and the browser will automatically remove the string <script src="framebuster.js" from the actual page source. Note that the rest of the page continues run and the attacker just removed this part of page security. In practice, any JS in the page source can be modified. For some cases, a page without XSS vulnerability having reflected content can be used to run selected JavaScript on page due the neutering incorrectly turning plain text data into executable JavaScript code. (That is, turn textual data within a normal DOM text node into content of <script> tag and execute it!)

X-XSS-Protection: 1; mode=block allows attacker to leak data from the page source by using the behavior of the page as side-channel. For example, if the page contains JavaScript code along the lines of var csrf_secret="521231347843", the attacker simply adds an extra parameter e.g. leak=var%20csrf_secret="3 and if the page is NOT blocked, the 3 was incorrect first digit. The attacker tries again, this time leak=var%20csrf_secret="5 and the page loading will be aborted. This allows the attacker to know that the first digit of the secret is 5. The attacker then continues to guess the next digit. This allows easily brute-forcing of CSRF secrets or any other secret value in the <script> source.

In the end, if your site is full of XSS reflection attacks, using the default value of 1 will reduce the attack surface a little bit. However, if your site is secure and you don't emit X-XSS-Protection: 0, your site will be vulnerable with any browser that supports this feature. If you want defense in depth support from browsers against yet-unknown XSS vulnerabilities on your site, use a strict Content-Security-Policy header and keep sending 0 for this mis-feature. That doesn't open your site to any known vulnerabilities.

Currently this feature is enabled by default in MSIE, Safari and Google Chrome. This used to be enabled in Edge but Microsoft already removed this mis-feature from Edge. Mozilla Firefox never implemented this.

HTTP 400 (bad request) for logical error, not malformed request syntax

As of this time, the latest draft of the HTTPbis specification, which is intended to replace and make RFC 2616 obsolete, states:

The 400 (Bad Request) status code indicates that the server cannot or will not process the request because the received syntax is invalid, nonsensical, or exceeds some limitation on what the server is willing to process.

This definition, while of course still subject to change, ratifies the widely used practice of responding to logical errors with a 400.

HTTP Range header

As Wrikken suggested, it's a valid request. It's also quite common when the client is requesting media or resuming a download.

A client will often test to see if the server handles ranged requests other than just looking for an Accept-Ranges response. Chrome always sends a Range: bytes=0- with its first GET request for a video, so it's something you can't dismiss.

Whenever a client includes Range: in its request, even if it's malformed, it's expecting a partial content (206) response. When you seek forward during HTML5 video playback, the browser only requests the starting point. For example:

Range: bytes=3744-

So, in order for the client to play video properly, your server must be able to handle these incomplete range requests.

You can handle the type of 'range' you specified in your question in two ways:

First, You could reply with the requested starting point given in the response, then the total length of the file minus one (the requested byte range is zero-indexed). For example:

Request:

GET /BigBuckBunny_320x180.mp4
Range: bytes=100-

Response:

206 Partial Content
Content-Type: video/mp4
Content-Length: 64656927
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Range: bytes 100-64656926/64656927

Second, you could reply with the starting point given in the request and an open-ended file length (size). This is for webcasts or other media where the total length is unknown. For example:

Request:

GET /BigBuckBunny_320x180.mp4
Range: bytes=100-

Response:

206 Partial Content
Content-Type: video/mp4
Content-Length: 64656927
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Range: bytes 100-64656926/*

Tips:

You must always respond with the content length included with the range. If the range is complete, with start to end, then the content length is simply the difference:

Request: Range: bytes=500-1000

Response: Content-Range: bytes 500-1000/123456

Remember that the range is zero-indexed, so Range: bytes=0-999 is actually requesting 1000 bytes, not 999, so respond with something like:

Content-Length: 1000
Content-Range: bytes 0-999/123456

Or:

Content-Length: 1000
Content-Range: bytes 0-999/*

But, avoid the latter method if possible because some media players try to figure out the duration from the file size. If your request is for media content, which is my hunch, then you should include its duration in the response. This is done with the following format:

X-Content-Duration: 63.23

This must be a floating point. Unlike Content-Length, this value doesn't have to be accurate. It's used to help the player seek around the video. If you are streaming a webcast and only have a general idea of how long it will be, it's better to include your estimated duration rather than ignore it altogether. So, for a two-hour webcast, you could include something like:

X-Content-Duration: 7200.00

With some media types, such as webm, you must also include the content-type, such as:

Content-Type: video/webm

All of these are necessary for the media to play properly, especially in HTML5. If you don't give a duration, the player may try to figure out the duration (to allow for seeking) from its file size, but this won't be accurate. This is fine, and necessary for webcasts or live streaming, but not ideal for playback of video files. You can extract the duration using software like FFMPEG and save it in a database or even the filename.

X-Content-Duration is being phased out in favor of Content-Duration, so I'd include that too. A basic, response to a "0-" request would include at least the following:

HTTP/1.1 206 Partial Content
Date: Sun, 08 May 2013 06:37:54 GMT
Server: Apache/2.0.52 (Red Hat)
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 3980
Content-Range: bytes 0-3979/3980
Content-Type: video/webm
X-Content-Duration: 2054.53
Content-Duration: 2054.53

One more point: Chrome always starts its first video request with the following:

Range: bytes=0-

Some servers will send a regular 200 response as a reply, which it accepts (but with limited playback options), but try to send a 206 instead to show than your server handles ranges. RFC 2616 says it's acceptable to ignore range headers.

REST HTTP status codes for failed validation or invalid duplicate

A duplicate in the database should be a 409 CONFLICT.

I recommend using 422 UNPROCESSABLE ENTITY for validation errors.

I give a longer explanation of 4xx codes here.

What's the difference between a 302 and a 307 redirect?

Flowchart

  • 301: permanent redirect: the URL is old and should be replaced. Browsers will cache this.
    Example usage: URL moved from /register-form.html to signup-form.html.
    The method will change to GET, as per RFC 7231: "For historical reasons, a user agent MAY change the request method from POST to GET for the subsequent request."
  • 302: temporary redirect. Only use for HTTP/1.0 clients. This status code should not change the method, but browsers did it anyway. The RFC says: "Many pre-HTTP/1.1 user agents do not understand [303]. When interoperability with such clients is a concern, the 302 status code may be used instead, since most user agents react to a 302 response as described here for 303." Of course, some clients may implement it according to the spec, so if interoperability with such ancient clients is not a real concern, 303 is better for consistent results.
  • 303: temporary redirect, changing the method to GET.
    Example usage: if the browser sent POST to /register.php, then now load (GET) /success.html.
  • 307: temporary redirect, repeating the request identically.
    Example usage: if the browser sent a POST to /register.php, then this tells it to redo the POST at /signup.php.
  • 308: permanent redirect, repeating the request identically. Where 307 is the "no method change" counterpart of 303, this 308 status is the "no method change" counterpart of 301.

RFC 7231 (from 2014) is very readable and not overly verbose. If you want to know the exact answer, it's a recommended read. Some other answers use RFC 2616 from 1999, but nothing changed.

RFC 7238 specifies the 308 status. It is considered experimental, but it was already supported by all major browsers in 2016.

Create request with POST, which response codes 200 or 201 and content

The output is actually dependent on the content type being requested. However, at minimum you should put the resource that was created in Location. Just like the Post-Redirect-Get pattern.

In my case I leave it blank until requested otherwise. Since that is the behavior of JAX-RS when using Response.created().

However, just note that browsers and frameworks like Angular do not follow 201's automatically. I have noted the behaviour in http://www.trajano.net/2013/05/201-created-with-angular-resource/

HTTP 401 - what's an appropriate WWW-Authenticate header value?

No, you'll have to specify the authentication method to use (typically "Basic") and the authentication realm. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_access_authentication for an example request and response.

You might also want to read RFC 2617 - HTTP Authentication: Basic and Digest Access Authentication.

HTTP GET with request body

What about nonconforming base64 encoded headers? "SOMETHINGAPP-PARAMS:sdfSD45fdg45/aS"

Length restrictions hm. Can't you make your POST handling distinguish between the meanings? If you want simple parameters like sorting, I don't see why this would be a problem. I guess it's certainty you're worried about.

Why both no-cache and no-store should be used in HTTP response?

Under certain circumstances, IE6 will still cache files even when Cache-Control: no-cache is in the response headers.

The W3C states of no-cache:

If the no-cache directive does not specify a field-name, then a cache MUST NOT use the response to satisfy a subsequent request without successful revalidation with the origin server.

In my application, if you visited a page with the no-cache header, then logged out and then hit back in your browser, IE6 would still grab the page from the cache (without a new/validating request to the server). Adding in the no-store header stopped it doing so. But if you take the W3C at their word, there's actually no way to control this behavior:

History buffers MAY store such responses as part of their normal operation.

General differences between browser history and the normal HTTP caching are described in a specific sub-section of the spec.

HTTP POST with URL query parameters -- good idea or not?

You want reasons? Here's one:

A web form can't be used to send a request to a page that uses a mix of GET and POST. If you set the form's method to GET, all the parameters are in the query string. If you set the form's method to POST, all the parameters are in the request body.

How to draw a filled triangle in android canvas?

You probably need to do something like :

Paint red = new Paint();

red.setColor(android.graphics.Color.RED);
red.setStyle(Paint.Style.FILL);

And use this color for your path, instead of your ARGB. Make sure the last point of your path ends on the first one, it makes sense also.

Tell me if it works please !

Random state (Pseudo-random number) in Scikit learn

random_state number splits the test and training datasets with a random manner. In addition to what is explained here, it is important to remember that random_state value can have significant effect on the quality of your model (by quality I essentially mean accuracy to predict). For instance, If you take a certain dataset and train a regression model with it, without specifying the random_state value, there is the potential that everytime, you will get a different accuracy result for your trained model on the test data. So it is important to find the best random_state value to provide you with the most accurate model. And then, that number will be used to reproduce your model in another occasion such as another research experiment. To do so, it is possible to split and train the model in a for-loop by assigning random numbers to random_state parameter:

for j in range(1000):

            X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(X, y , random_state =j,     test_size=0.35)
            lr = LarsCV().fit(X_train, y_train)

            tr_score.append(lr.score(X_train, y_train))
            ts_score.append(lr.score(X_test, y_test))

        J = ts_score.index(np.max(ts_score))

        X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(X, y , random_state =J, test_size=0.35)
        M = LarsCV().fit(X_train, y_train)
        y_pred = M.predict(X_test)`

How to require a controller in an angularjs directive

There is a good stackoverflow answer here by Mark Rajcok:

AngularJS directive controllers requiring parent directive controllers?

with a link to this very clear jsFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/mrajcok/StXFK/

<div ng-controller="MyCtrl">
    <div screen>
        <div component>
            <div widget>
                <button ng-click="widgetIt()">Woo Hoo</button>
            </div>
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

JavaScript

var myApp = angular.module('myApp',[])

.directive('screen', function() {
    return {
        scope: true,
        controller: function() {
            this.doSomethingScreeny = function() {
                alert("screeny!");
            }
        }
    }
})

.directive('component', function() {
    return {
        scope: true,
        require: '^screen',
        controller: function($scope) {
            this.componentFunction = function() {
                $scope.screenCtrl.doSomethingScreeny();
            }
        },
        link: function(scope, element, attrs, screenCtrl) {
            scope.screenCtrl = screenCtrl
        }
    }
})

.directive('widget', function() {
    return {
        scope: true,
        require: "^component",
        link: function(scope, element, attrs, componentCtrl) {
            scope.widgetIt = function() {
                componentCtrl.componentFunction();
            };
        }
    }
})

//myApp.directive('myDirective', function() {});
//myApp.factory('myService', function() {});

function MyCtrl($scope) {
    $scope.name = 'Superhero';
}

How do I do a multi-line string in node.js?

Take a look at the mstring module for node.js.

This is a simple little module that lets you have multi-line strings in JavaScript.

Just do this:

var M = require('mstring')

var mystring = M(function(){/*** Ontario Mining and Forestry Group ***/})

to get

mystring === "Ontario\nMining and\nForestry\nGroup"

And that's pretty much it.

How It Works
In Node.js, you can call the .toString method of a function, and it will give you the source code of the function definition, including any comments. A regular expression grabs the content of the comment.

Yes, it's a hack. Inspired by a throwaway comment from Dominic Tarr.

note: The module (as of 2012/13/11) doesn't allow whitespace before the closing ***/, so you'll need to hack it in yourself.

How do I specify row heights in CSS Grid layout?

One of the Related posts gave me the (simple) answer.

Apparently the auto value on the grid-template-rows property does exactly what I was looking for.

.grid {
    display:grid;
    grid-template-columns: 1fr 1.5fr 1fr;
    grid-template-rows: auto auto 1fr 1fr 1fr auto auto;
    grid-gap:10px;
    height: calc(100vh - 10px);
}

Merge up to a specific commit

To keep the branching clean, you could do this:

git checkout newbranch
git branch newbranch2
git reset --hard <commit Id> # the commit at which you want to merge
git checkout master
git merge newbranch
git checkout newbranch2

This way, newbranch will end where it was merged into master, and you continue working on newbranch2.

Get all rows from SQLite

I have been looking into the same problem! I think your problem is related to where you identify the variable that you use to populate the ArrayList that you return. If you define it inside the loop, then it will always reference the last row in the table in the database. In order to avoid this, you have to identify it outside the loop:

String name;
if (cursor.moveToFirst()) {

        while (cursor.isAfterLast() == false) {
            name = cursor.getString(cursor
                    .getColumnIndex(countyname));

            list.add(name);
            cursor.moveToNext();
        }
}

Show/hide 'div' using JavaScript

Set your HTML as

<div id="body" hidden="">
 <h1>Numbers</h1>
 </div>
 <div id="body1" hidden="hidden">
 Body 1
 </div>

And now set the javascript as

function changeDiv()
  {
  document.getElementById('body').hidden = "hidden"; // hide body div tag
  document.getElementById('body1').hidden = ""; // show body1 div tag
  document.getElementById('body1').innerHTML = "If you can see this, JavaScript function worked";
  // display text if JavaScript worked
   }

How do I conditionally apply CSS styles in AngularJS?

As of AngularJS v1.2.0rc, ng-class and even ng-attr-class fail with SVG elements (They did work earlier, even with normal binding inside the class attribute)

Specifically, none of these work now:

ng-class="current==this_element?'active':' ' "
ng-attr-class="{{current==this_element?'active':' '}}"
class="class1 class2 .... {{current==this_element?'active':''}}"

As a workaround, I've to use

ng-attr-otherAttr="{{current==this_element?'active':''}}"

and then style using

[otherAttr='active'] {
   ... styles ...
}

How to register ASP.NET 2.0 to web server(IIS7)?

If anyone like me is still unable to register ASP.NET with IIS.

You just need to run these three commands one by one in command prompt

cd c:\windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v2.0.50727

after that, Run

aspnet_regiis.exe -i -enable

and Finally Reset IIS

iisreset

Hope it helps the person in need... cheers!

What is the difference between the | and || or operators?

The | operator performs a bitwise OR of its two operands (meaning both sides must evaluate to false for it to return false) while the || operator will only evaluate the second operator if it needs to.

What are the differences between a pointer variable and a reference variable in C++?

There is a very important non-technical difference between pointers and references: An argument passed to a function by pointer is much more visible than an argument passed to a function by non-const reference. For example:

void fn1(std::string s);
void fn2(const std::string& s);
void fn3(std::string& s);
void fn4(std::string* s);

void bar() {
    std::string x;
    fn1(x);  // Cannot modify x
    fn2(x);  // Cannot modify x (without const_cast)
    fn3(x);  // CAN modify x!
    fn4(&x); // Can modify x (but is obvious about it)
}

Back in C, a call that looks like fn(x) can only be passed by value, so it definitely cannot modify x; to modify an argument you would need to pass a pointer fn(&x). So if an argument wasn't preceded by an & you knew it would not be modified. (The converse, & means modified, was not true because you would sometimes have to pass large read-only structures by const pointer.)

Some argue that this is such a useful feature when reading code, that pointer parameters should always be used for modifiable parameters rather than non-const references, even if the function never expects a nullptr. That is, those people argue that function signatures like fn3() above should not be allowed. Google's C++ style guidelines are an example of this.

Why does foo = filter(...) return a <filter object>, not a list?

Have a look at the python documentation for filter(function, iterable) (from here):

Construct an iterator from those elements of iterable for which function returns true.

So in order to get a list back you have to use list class:

shesaid = list(filter(greetings(), ["hello", "goodbye"]))

But this probably isn't what you wanted, because it tries to call the result of greetings(), which is "hello", on the values of your input list, and this won't work. Here also the iterator type comes into play, because the results aren't generated until you use them (for example by calling list() on it). So at first you won't get an error, but when you try to do something with shesaid it will stop working:

>>> print(list(shesaid))
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: 'str' object is not callable

If you want to check which elements in your list are equal to "hello" you have to use something like this:

shesaid = list(filter(lambda x: x == "hello", ["hello", "goodbye"]))

(I put your function into a lambda, see Randy C's answer for a "normal" function)

Docker official registry (Docker Hub) URL

For those trying to create a Google Cloud instance using the "Deploy a container image to this VM instance." option then the correct url format would be

The suggestion above of registry.hub.docker.com/library/<dockerimagename> did not work for me.

I finally found the solution here (in my case, i was trying to run docker.io/tensorflow/serving:latest)

Java optional parameters

This is an old question maybe even before actual Optional type was introduced but these days you can consider few things: - use method overloading - use Optional type which has advantage of avoiding passing NULLs around Optional type was introduced in Java 8 before it was usually used from third party lib such as Google's Guava. Using optional as parameters / arguments can be consider as over-usage as the main purpose was to use it as a return time.

Losing Session State

A number of things can cause session state to mysteriously disappear.

  1. Your sessionState timeout has expired
  2. You update your web.config or other file type that causes your AppDomain to recycle
  3. Your AppPool in IIS recycles
  4. You update your site with a lot of files, and ASP.NET proactively destroys your AppDomain to recompile and preserve memory.

-

If you are using IIS 7 or 7.5, here are a few things to look for:

  1. By default, IIS sets AppPools to turn themselves off after a period of inactivity.
  2. By default, IIS sets AppPools to recycle every 1740 minutes (obviously depending on your root configuration, but that's the default)
  3. In IIS, check out the "Advanced Settings" of your AppPool. In there is a property called "Idle Time-out". Set that to zero or to a higher number than the default (20).
  4. In IIS, check the "Recycling" settings of your AppPool. Here you can enable or disable your AppPool from recycling. The 2nd page of the wizard is a way to log to the Event Log each type of AppPool shut down.

If you are using IIS 6, the same settings apply (for the most part but with different ways of getting to them), however getting them to log the recycles is more of a pain. Here is a link to a way to get IIS 6 to log AppPool recycle events:

http://web.archive.org/web/20100803114054/http://surrealization.com/sample-code/getnotifiedwhenapppoolrecycles/

-

If you are updating files on your web app, you should expect all session to be lost. That's just the nature of the beast. However, you might not expect it to happen multiple times. If you update 15 or more files (aspx, dll, etc), there is a likelyhood that you will have multiple restarts over a period of time as these pages are recompiled by users accessing the site. See these two links:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319947

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.configuration.compilationsection.numrecompilesbeforeapprestart.aspx

Setting the numCompilesBeforeAppRestart to a higher number (or manually bouncing your AppPool) will eliminate this issue.

-

You can always handle Application_SessionStart and Application_SessionEnd to be notified when a session is created or ended. The HttpSessionState class also has an IsNewSession property you can check on any page request to determine if a new session is created for the active user.

-

Finally, if it's possible in your circumstance, I have used the SQL Server session mode with good success. It's not recommended if you are storing a large amount of data in it (every request loads and saves the full amount of data from SQL Server) and it can be a pain if you are putting custom objects in it (as they have to be serializable), but it has helped me in a shared hosting scenario where I couldn't configure my AppPool to not recycle couple hours. In my case, I stored limited information and it had no adverse performance effect. Add to this the fact that an existing user will reuse their SessionID by default and my users never noticed the fact that their in-memory Session was dropped by an AppPool recycle because all their state was stored in SQL Server.

SQL Query Where Field DOES NOT Contain $x

What kind of field is this? The IN operator cannot be used with a single field, but is meant to be used in subqueries or with predefined lists:

-- subquery
SELECT a FROM x WHERE x.b NOT IN (SELECT b FROM y);
-- predefined list
SELECT a FROM x WHERE x.b NOT IN (1, 2, 3, 6);

If you are searching a string, go for the LIKE operator (but this will be slow):

-- Finds all rows where a does not contain "text"
SELECT * FROM x WHERE x.a NOT LIKE '%text%';

If you restrict it so that the string you are searching for has to start with the given string, it can use indices (if there is an index on that field) and be reasonably fast:

-- Finds all rows where a does not start with "text"
SELECT * FROM x WHERE x.a NOT LIKE 'text%';

How to add footnotes to GitHub-flavoured Markdown?

I wasn't able to get Surya's and Matteo's solutions to work. For example, "(#f1)" was just displayed as text, and didn't become a link. However, their solutions led me to slightly different solution. (I also formatted the footnote and the link back to the original superscript a bit differently.)

In the body of the text:

Yadda yadda<a href="#note1" id="note1ref"><sup>1</sup></a>

At the end of the document:

<a id="note1" href="#note1ref"><sup>1</sup></a>Here is the footnote text.

Clicking on the superscript in the footnote returns to the superscript in the original text.

Get value of a merged cell of an excel from its cell address in vba

Even if it is really discouraged to use merge cells in Excel (use Center Across Selection for instance if needed), the cell that "contains" the value is the one on the top left (at least, that's a way to express it).

Hence, you can get the value of merged cells in range B4:B11 in several ways:

  • Range("B4").Value
  • Range("B4:B11").Cells(1).Value
  • Range("B4:B11").Cells(1,1).Value

You can also note that all the other cells have no value in them. While debugging, you can see that the value is empty.

Also note that Range("B4:B11").Value won't work (raises an execution error number 13 if you try to Debug.Print it) because it returns an array.

How do I UPDATE a row in a table or INSERT it if it doesn't exist?

SQLite supports replacing a row if it already exists:

INSERT OR REPLACE INTO [...blah...]

You can shorten this to

REPLACE INTO [...blah...]

This shortcut was added to be compatible with the MySQL REPLACE INTO expression.

VBA shorthand for x=x+1?

If you want to call the incremented number directly in a function, this solution works bettter:

Function inc(ByRef data As Integer)
    data = data + 1
    inc = data
End Function

for example:

Wb.Worksheets(mySheet).Cells(myRow, inc(myCol))

If the function inc() returns no value, the above line will generate an error.

How can I exclude $(this) from a jQuery selector?

You should use the "siblings()" method, and prevent from running the ".content a" selector over and over again just for applying that effect:

HTML

<div class="content">
    <a href="#">A</a>
</div>
<div class="content">
    <a href="#">B</a>
</div>
<div class="content">
    <a href="#">C</a>
</div>

CSS

.content {
    background-color:red;
    margin:10px;
}
.content.other {
    background-color:yellow;
}

Javascript

$(".content a").click(function() {
  var current = $(this).parent();
  current.removeClass('other')
    .siblings()
    .addClass('other');
});

How to write a multidimensional array to a text file?

ndarray.tofile() should also work

e.g. if your array is called a:

a.tofile('yourfile.txt',sep=" ",format="%s")

Since version 1.5.0, np.tofile() takes an optional parameter newline='\n' to allow multi-line output. https://docs.scipy.org/doc/numpy-1.13.0/reference/generated/numpy.savetxt.html

In angular $http service, How can I catch the "status" of error?

Response status comes as second parameter in callback, (from docs):

// Simple GET request example :
$http.get('/someUrl').
  success(function(data, status, headers, config) {
    // this callback will be called asynchronously
    // when the response is available
  }).
  error(function(data, status, headers, config) {
    // called asynchronously if an error occurs
    // or server returns response with an error status.
  });

Setting max width for body using Bootstrap

Unfortunately none of the above solved the problem for me.

I didn't want to edit the bootstrap-responsive.css so I went the easy way:

  1. Create a css with priority over bootstrap-responsive.css
  2. Copy all the content of the @media (min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 979px) (line 461 with latest bootstrap version 2.3.1 as of today)
  3. Paste it in your high priority css
  4. In your css, put @media (min-width: 979px) in the place where it said @media (min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 979px) before. This sets the from 768 to 979 style to everything above 768.

That's it. It's not optimal, you will have duplicated css, but it works 100% perfect!

What is the __del__ method, How to call it?

__del__ is a finalizer. It is called when an object is garbage collected which happens at some point after all references to the object have been deleted.

In a simple case this could be right after you say del x or, if x is a local variable, after the function ends. In particular, unless there are circular references, CPython (the standard Python implementation) will garbage collect immediately.

However, this is an implementation detail of CPython. The only required property of Python garbage collection is that it happens after all references have been deleted, so this might not necessary happen right after and might not happen at all.

Even more, variables can live for a long time for many reasons, e.g. a propagating exception or module introspection can keep variable reference count greater than 0. Also, variable can be a part of cycle of references — CPython with garbage collection turned on breaks most, but not all, such cycles, and even then only periodically.

Since you have no guarantee it's executed, one should never put the code that you need to be run into __del__() — instead, this code belongs to finally clause of the try block or to a context manager in a with statement. However, there are valid use cases for __del__: e.g. if an object X references Y and also keeps a copy of Y reference in a global cache (cache['X -> Y'] = Y) then it would be polite for X.__del__ to also delete the cache entry.

If you know that the destructor provides (in violation of the above guideline) a required cleanup, you might want to call it directly, since there is nothing special about it as a method: x.__del__(). Obviously, you should you do so only if you know that it doesn't mind to be called twice. Or, as a last resort, you can redefine this method using

type(x).__del__ = my_safe_cleanup_method

I needed this to check if the view controller is the current viewed controller, I did it via checking if there's any presented view controller or pushed through the navigator, I'm posting it in case anyone needed such a solution:

if presentedViewController != nil || navigationController?.topViewController != self {
      //Viewcontroller isn't viewed
}else{
     // Now your viewcontroller is being viewed
}

Deleting DataFrame row in Pandas based on column value

The given answer is correct nontheless as someone above said you can use df.query('line_race != 0') which depending on your problem is much faster. Highly recommend.

Eclipse: The resource is not on the build path of a Java project

You can add the src folder to build path by:

  1. Select Java perspective.
  2. Right click on src folder.
  3. Select Build Path > Use a source folder.

And you are done. Hope this help.

EDIT: Refer to the Eclipse documentation

Simple function to sort an array of objects

I modified @Geuis 's answer by using lambda and convert it upper case first:

people.sort((a, b) => a.toLocaleUpperCase() < b.toLocaleUpperCase() ? -1 : 1);

want current date and time in "dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss.SS" format

The output in your first printline is using your formatter. The output in your second (the date created from your parsed string) is output using Date#toString which formats according to its own rules. That is, you're not using a formatter.

The rules are as per what you're seeing and described here: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/util/Date.html#toString()

SyntaxError: import declarations may only appear at top level of a module

I got this on Firefox (FF58). I fixed this with:

  1. It is still experimental on Firefox (from v54): You have to set to true the variable dom.moduleScripts.enabled in about:config

Source: Import page on mozilla (See Browser compatibility)

  1. Add type="module" to your script tag where you import the js file

<script type="module" src="appthatimports.js"></script>

  1. Import files have to be prefixed (./, /, ../ or http:// before)

import * from "./mylib.js"

For more examples, this blog post is good.

proper name for python * operator?

I believe it's most commonly called the "splat operator." Unpacking arguments is what it does.

MySQL foreign key constraints, cascade delete

I think (I'm not certain) that foreign key constraints won't do precisely what you want given your table design. Perhaps the best thing to do is to define a stored procedure that will delete a category the way you want, and then call that procedure whenever you want to delete a category.

CREATE PROCEDURE `DeleteCategory` (IN category_ID INT)
LANGUAGE SQL
NOT DETERMINISTIC
MODIFIES SQL DATA
SQL SECURITY DEFINER
BEGIN

DELETE FROM
    `products`
WHERE
    `id` IN (
        SELECT `products_id`
        FROM `categories_products`
        WHERE `categories_id` = category_ID
    )
;

DELETE FROM `categories`
WHERE `id` = category_ID;

END

You also need to add the following foreign key constraints to the linking table:

ALTER TABLE `categories_products` ADD
    CONSTRAINT `Constr_categoriesproducts_categories_fk`
    FOREIGN KEY `categories_fk` (`categories_id`) REFERENCES `categories` (`id`)
    ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE,
    CONSTRAINT `Constr_categoriesproducts_products_fk`
    FOREIGN KEY `products_fk` (`products_id`) REFERENCES `products` (`id`)
    ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE

The CONSTRAINT clause can, of course, also appear in the CREATE TABLE statement.

Having created these schema objects, you can delete a category and get the behaviour you want by issuing CALL DeleteCategory(category_ID) (where category_ID is the category to be deleted), and it will behave how you want. But don't issue a normal DELETE FROM query, unless you want more standard behaviour (i.e. delete from the linking table only, and leave the products table alone).

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/hamcrest/SelfDescribing

Works for me: IntelliJ IDEA 13.1.1, JUnit4, Java 6

I changed the file in project path: [PROJECT_NAME].iml

Replaced:

  <library>
    <CLASSES>
      <root url="jar://$APPLICATION_HOME_DIR$/lib/junit-4.11.jar!/" />
    </CLASSES>
    <JAVADOC />
    <SOURCES />
  </library>

By:

  <library name="JUnit4">
    <CLASSES>
      <root url="jar://$APPLICATION_HOME_DIR$/lib/junit-4.11.jar!/" />
      <root url="jar://$APPLICATION_HOME_DIR$/lib/hamcrest-core-1.3.jar!/" />
      <root url="jar://$APPLICATION_HOME_DIR$/lib/hamcrest-library-1.3.jar!/" />
    </CLASSES>
    <JAVADOC />
    <SOURCES />
  </library>

So the final .iml file is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<module type="JAVA_MODULE" version="4">
  <component name="NewModuleRootManager" inherit-compiler-output="true">
    <exclude-output />

      <sourceFolder url="file://$MODULE_DIR$/tests" isTestSource="true" />
    </content>
    <orderEntry type="inheritedJdk" />
    <orderEntry type="sourceFolder" forTests="false" />
    <orderEntry type="module-library">
      <library name="JUnit4">
        <CLASSES>
          <root url="jar://$APPLICATION_HOME_DIR$/lib/junit-4.11.jar!/" />
          <root url="jar://$APPLICATION_HOME_DIR$/lib/hamcrest-core-1.3.jar!/" />
          <root url="jar://$APPLICATION_HOME_DIR$/lib/hamcrest-library-1.3.jar!/" />
        </CLASSES>
        <JAVADOC />
        <SOURCES />

    </orderEntry>
  </component>
</module>

P.S.: save the file and don't let to IntelliJ Idea reload it. Just once.

How to compile C program on command line using MinGW?

You can permanently include the directory of the MinGW file, by clicking on My Computer, Properties, Advanced system settings, Environment variables, then edit and paste your directory.

How to trust a apt repository : Debian apt-get update error public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY <id>

I found several posts telling me to run several gpg commands, but they didn't solve the problem because of two things. First, I was missing the debian-keyring package on my system and second I was using an invalid keyserver. Try different keyservers if you're getting timeouts!

Thus, the way I fixed it was:

apt-get install debian-keyring
gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys 1F41B907
gpg --armor --export 1F41B907 | apt-key add -

Then running a new "apt-get update" worked flawlessly!

How to determine total number of open/active connections in ms sql server 2005

This shows the number of connections per each DB:

SELECT
    DB_NAME(dbid) as DBName,
    COUNT(dbid) as NumberOfConnections,
    loginame as LoginName
FROM
    sys.sysprocesses
WHERE
    dbid > 0
GROUP BY
    dbid, loginame

And this gives the total:

SELECT
    COUNT(dbid) as TotalConnections
FROM
    sys.sysprocesses
WHERE
    dbid > 0

If you need more detail, run:

sp_who2 'Active'

Note: The SQL Server account used needs the 'sysadmin' role (otherwise it will just show a single row and a count of 1 as the result)

How do I see which version of Swift I'm using?

Increment value in mysql update query

You should use PDO to prevent SQL injection risk.

You can connect to DB like this :

try {
    $pdo_options[PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE] = PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION;
    $bdd = new PDO('mysql:host=xxxx;dbname=xxxx', 'user', 'password', $pdo_options);
    $bdd->query('SET NAMES "utf8"');
} catch (PDOException $e) {
    exit('Error');
}

No need to query DB to get the number of points. You can increment directly in the update query (points = points + 1).

(note : Also, it’s not a good idea to increment the value with PHP because you need to select first the data and the value can changed if other users are updated it.)

$req = $bdd->prepare('UPDATE member_profile SET
            points = points + 1
            WHERE user_id = :user_id');

$req->execute(array(
    'user_id' => $userid
));

jquery function val() is not equivalent to "$(this).value="?

One thing you can do is this:

$(this)[0].value = "Something";

This allows jQuery to return the javascript object for that element, and you can bypass jQuery Functions.

Show a popup/message box from a Windows batch file

Few more ways.

1) The geekiest and hackiest - it uses the IEXPRESS to create small exe that will create a pop-up with a single button (it can create two more types of pop-up messages). Works on EVERY windows from XP and above:

;@echo off
;setlocal

;set ppopup_executable=popupe.exe
;set "message2=click OK to continue"
;
;del /q /f %tmp%\yes >nul 2>&1
;
;copy /y "%~f0" "%temp%\popup.sed" >nul 2>&1

;(echo(FinishMessage=%message2%)>>"%temp%\popup.sed";
;(echo(TargetName=%cd%\%ppopup_executable%)>>"%temp%\popup.sed";
;(echo(FriendlyName=%message1_title%)>>"%temp%\popup.sed"
;
;iexpress /n /q /m %temp%\popup.sed
;%ppopup_executable%
;rem del /q /f %ppopup_executable% >nul 2>&1

;pause

;endlocal
;exit /b 0

2) Using MSHTA. Also works on every windows machine from XP and above (despite the OP do not want "external" languages the JavaScript here is minimized). Should be saved as .bat:

@if (true == false) @end /*!
@echo off
mshta "about:<script src='file://%~f0'></script><script>close()</script>" %*
goto :EOF */

alert("Hello, world!");

or in one line:

mshta "about:<script>alert('Hello, world!');close()</script>"

or

mshta "javascript:alert('message');close()"

or

mshta.exe vbscript:Execute("msgbox ""message"",0,""title"":close")

3) Here's parameterized .bat/jscript hybrid (should be saved as bat). It again uses JavaScript despite the OP request but as it is a bat it can be called as a bat file without worries. It uses POPUP which allows a little bit more control than the more popular MSGBOX. It uses WSH, but not MSHTA like in the example above.

var timeout_message="timed out";
var message="";

function printHelp() {

}

if (WScript.Arguments.Length==1){
    runPopup();
    WScript.Quit(0);
}

if (args.Item(1).toLowerCase() == "-help" || args.Item(1).toLowerCase() == "-h" ) {
    printHelp();
    WScript.Quit(0);
}

if (WScript.Arguments.Length % 2 == 0 ) {
    WScript.Echo("Illegal arguments ");
    printHelp();
    WScript.Quit(1);

        title = args.Item(arg+1);
    }

    if (args.Item(arg).toLowerCase() == "-timeout") {
        timeout = parseInt(args.Item(arg+1));
        if (isNaN(timeout)) {

        }
    }

    if (args.Item(arg).toLowerCase() == "-tom") {
        timeout_message = args.Item(arg+1);
    }

    if (args.Item(arg).toLowerCase() == "-pbm") {
        pressed_message = args.Item(arg+1);
    }

    if (args.Item(arg).toLowerCase() == "-message") {
        message = args.Item(arg+1);
    }
}

function runPopup(){
    var btn = wshShell.Popup(message, timeout, title, 0x0 + 0x10);

    switch(btn) {
        // button pressed.
        case 1:
            WScript.Echo(pressed_message);
            break;

        // Timed out.
        case -1:
           WScript.Echo(timeout_message);
           break;
    }
}

runPopup();

4) and one jscript.net/.bat hybrid (should be saved as .bat) .This time it uses .NET and compiles a small .exe file that could be deleted:

@if (@X)==(@Y) @end /****** silent jscript comment ******

import System;
import System.Windows;
import System.Windows.Forms

var arguments:String[] = Environment.GetCommandLineArgs();
MessageBox.Show(arguments[1],arguments[0]);

5) and at the end one single call to powershell that creates a pop-up (can be called from command line or from batch if powershell is installed):

powershell [Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("""System.Windows.Forms""");[Windows.Forms.MessageBox]::show("""Hello World""", """My PopUp Message Box""")

6) And the dbenham's approach seen here

start "" cmd /c "echo(&echo(&echo              Hello world!     &echo(&pause>nul"

7) For a system tray notifications you can try this:

call SystemTrayNotification.bat -tooltip warning -time 3000 -title "Woow" -text "Boom" -icon question

How can I use the python HTMLParser library to extract data from a specific div tag?

class LinksParser(HTMLParser.HTMLParser):
  def __init__(self):
    HTMLParser.HTMLParser.__init__(self)
    self.recording = 0
    self.data = []

  def handle_starttag(self, tag, attributes):
    if tag != 'div':
      return
    if self.recording:
      self.recording += 1
      return
    for name, value in attributes:
      if name == 'id' and value == 'remository':
        break
    else:
      return
    self.recording = 1

  def handle_endtag(self, tag):
    if tag == 'div' and self.recording:
      self.recording -= 1

  def handle_data(self, data):
    if self.recording:
      self.data.append(data)

self.recording counts the number of nested div tags starting from a "triggering" one. When we're in the sub-tree rooted in a triggering tag, we accumulate the data in self.data.

The data at the end of the parse are left in self.data (a list of strings, possibly empty if no triggering tag was met). Your code from outside the class can access the list directly from the instance at the end of the parse, or you can add appropriate accessor methods for the purpose, depending on what exactly is your goal.

The class could be easily made a bit more general by using, in lieu of the constant literal strings seen in the code above, 'div', 'id', and 'remository', instance attributes self.tag, self.attname and self.attvalue, set by __init__ from arguments passed to it -- I avoided that cheap generalization step in the code above to avoid obscuring the core points (keep track of a count of nested tags and accumulate data into a list when the recording state is active).

How to use aria-expanded="true" to change a css property

If you were open to using JQuery, you could modify the background color for any link that has the property aria-expanded set to true by doing the following...

$("a[aria-expanded='true']").css("background-color", "#42DCA3");

Depending on how specific you want to be regarding which links this applies to, you may have to slightly modify your selector.

Why do this() and super() have to be the first statement in a constructor?

I know I am a little late to the party, but I've used this trick a couple of times (and I know it's a bit unusual):

I create an generic interface InfoRunnable<T> with one method:

public T run(Object... args);

And if I need to do something before passing it to the constructor I just do this:

super(new InfoRunnable<ThingToPass>() {
    public ThingToPass run(Object... args) {
        /* do your things here */
    }
}.run(/* args here */));

<script src="http://path.to/widget.js" data-width="200" data-height="200">

<script>
function getSyncScriptParams() {
         var scripts = document.getElementsByTagName('script');
         var lastScript = scripts[scripts.length-1];
         var scriptName = lastScript;

             height : scriptName.getAttribute('data-height')
         };
 }
</script>

Change URL and redirect using jQuery

jQuery does not have an option for this, nor should it have one. This is perfectly valid javascript and there is no reason for jQuery to provide wrapper functions for this.

jQuery is just a library on top of javascript, even if you use jQuery you can still use normal javascript.

Btw window.location is not a function but a property which you should set like this:

window.location = url;

What is the $? (dollar question mark) variable in shell scripting?

A return value of the previously executed process.

10.4 Getting the return value of a program

In bash, the return value of a program is stored in a special variable called $?.

This illustrates how to capture the return value of a program, I assume that the directory dada does not exist. (This was also suggested by mike)

        cd /dada &> /dev/null
        echo rv: $?
        cd $(pwd) &> /dev/null

Sublime Text 2: How do I change the color that the row number is highlighted?

If you have SublimeLinter installed, your theme (at least it ST3) may end up in .../Packages/User/SublimeLinter/[ your-chosen-theme ]

How to show a GUI message box from a bash script in linux?

CodeIgniter: 404 Page Not Found on Live Server

There are a number of things you can check here. I'll go over each one with you.

1, When moving to a live server from localhost(htdocs) you need to make sure that the version of PHP you are using is supported.

To test this: Create an 'index.php' file and add the below line only.

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

Just press 'Ctrl + F' and search "version". You will find the php version. It may need to be 5.3+ to support features.

2, Check your config/config.php and check your $config['base_url'] and $config['index_page'] screen shot below

enter image description here

I recommend putting site name in the base url example: 'www.site.com/' but remove the index.php for cleaning.

3, MOST LIKELY THE REASON SO START WITH THIS

It most likely is the .htaccess file. Here is mine Made by Elliot Haughton. Put this in your root directory and change line 9 'RewriteBase /' if necessary.

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
# !IMPORTANT! Set your RewriteBase here and don't forget trailing and leading
# slashes.
# If your page resides at
# http://www.example.com/mypage/test1
# then use
# RewriteBase /mypage/test1/
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?/$1 [L]

<IfModule !mod_rewrite.c>
# If we don't have mod_rewrite installed, all 404's
# can be sent to index.php, and everything works as normal.
# Submitted by: ElliotHaughin
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php

(Make sure you use both parts above. The editor broke it in two but all code above is one .htaccess file).

If none of the above works, give me a shout back and we'll step through it.

Change Tomcat Server's timeout in Eclipse

SOLVED: That's it!!!! For me was compiling with JDK6 but running Tomcat with JDK7, WST uses the system properties and not the eclipse settings. I also configure the same JDK Version in eclipse and in System (check it with java -version in cmd line)

Details: I try to configure eclipse like describe here, but it didn´t solve the problem, then I notice in eclipse´s error log that tomcat was started with jre 1.7. in spite of my configurations.

I also try, in cmd line, 'java -version' and obtained '1.7' instead of expected '1.6'.

I also decide to configure java 1.6 (like in eclipse) in system panel but it didn´t solve the problem. I also desinstall jre 1.7 restart eclipse AND IT SUCCESS!.. It was a very usefull clue, thank you.

What is SuppressWarnings ("unchecked") in Java?

It is an annotation to suppress compile warnings about unchecked generic operations (not exceptions), such as casts. It essentially implies that the programmer did not wish to be notified about these which he is already aware of when compiling a particular bit of code.

You can read more on this specific annotation here:

SuppressWarnings

Additionally, Oracle provides some tutorial documentation on the usage of annotations here:

Annotations

As they put it,

"The 'unchecked' warning can occur when interfacing with legacy code written before the advent of generics (discussed in the lesson titled Generics)."

How can VBA connect to MySQL database in Excel?

Updating this topic with a more recent answer, solution that worked for me with version 8.0 of MySQL Connector/ODBC (downloaded at https://downloads.mysql.com/archives/c-odbc/):

Public oConn As ADODB.Connection
Sub MySqlInit()
    If oConn Is Nothing Then
        Dim str As String
        str = "Driver={MySQL ODBC 8.0 Unicode Driver};SERVER=xxxxx;DATABASE=xxxxx;PORT=3306;UID=xxxxx;PWD=xxxxx;"
        Set oConn = New ADODB.Connection
        oConn.Open str
    End If
End Sub

The most important thing on this matter is to check the proper name and version of the installed driver at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\ODBC Drivers\

Angular 2 two way binding using ngModel is not working

In my case, I was missing a "name" attribute on my input element.

Angular EXCEPTION: No provider for Http

platformBrowserDynamic().bootstrapModule(AppModule);

Ideally, you split up this code in two separate files. For further information read:

Strings as Primary Keys in SQL Database

Technically yes, but if a string makes sense to be the primary key then you should probably use it. This all depends on the size of the table you're making it for and the length of the string that is going to be the primary key (longer strings == harder to compare). I wouldn't necessarily use a string for a table that has millions of rows, but the amount of performance slowdown you'll get by using a string on smaller tables will be minuscule to the headaches that you can have by having an integer that doesn't mean anything in relation to the data.

How to check if a line is blank using regex

The pattern you want is something like this in multiline mode:

^\s*$

Explanation:

  • ^ is the beginning of string anchor.
  • $ is the end of string anchor.
  • \s is the whitespace character class.
  • * is zero-or-more repetition of.

In multiline mode, ^ and $ also match the beginning and end of the line.

References:

A non-regex alternative:

You can also check if a given string line is "blank" (i.e. containing only whitespaces) by trim()-ing it, then checking if the resulting string isEmpty().

In Java, this would be something like this:

if (line.trim().isEmpty()) {
    // line is "blank"
}

The regex solution can also be simplified without anchors (because of how matches is defined in Java) as follows:

if (line.matches("\\s*")) {
    // line is "blank"
}

What exactly do "u" and "r" string flags do, and what are raw string literals?

There are two types of string in python: the traditional str type and the newer unicode type. If you type a string literal without the u in front you get the old str type which stores 8-bit characters, and with the u in front you get the newer unicode type that can store any Unicode character.

The r doesn't change the type at all, it just changes how the string literal is interpreted. Without the r, backslashes are treated as escape characters. With the r, backslashes are treated as literal. Either way, the type is the same.

ur is of course a Unicode string where backslashes are literal backslashes, not part of escape codes.

You can try to convert a Unicode string to an old string using the str() function, but if there are any unicode characters that cannot be represented in the old string, you will get an exception. You could replace them with question marks first if you wish, but of course this would cause those characters to be unreadable. It is not recommended to use the str type if you want to correctly handle unicode characters.

Resize Cross Domain Iframe Height

You need to have access as well on the site that you will be iframing. i found the best solution here: https://gist.github.com/MateuszFlisikowski/91ff99551dcd90971377

yourotherdomain.html

<script type='text/javascript' src="js/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script type='text/javascript'>
  // Size the parent iFrame
  function iframeResize() {
    var height = $('body').outerHeight(); // IMPORTANT: If body's height is set to 100% with CSS this will not work.
    parent.postMessage("resize::"+height,"*");
  }

  $(document).ready(function() {
    // Resize iframe
    setInterval(iframeResize, 1000);
  });
</script>

your website with iframe

<iframe src='example.html' id='edh-iframe'></iframe>
<script type='text/javascript'>
  // Listen for messages sent from the iFrame
  var eventMethod = window.addEventListener ? "addEventListener" : "attachEvent";
  var eventer = window[eventMethod];
  var messageEvent = eventMethod == "attachEvent" ? "onmessage" : "message";

  eventer(messageEvent,function(e) {
    // If the message is a resize frame request
    if (e.data.indexOf('resize::') != -1) {
      var height = e.data.replace('resize::', '');
      document.getElementById('edh-iframe').style.height = height+'px';
    }
  } ,false);

            }

get user timezone

This will get you the timezone as a PHP variable. I wrote a function using jQuery and PHP. This is tested, and does work!

On the PHP page where you are want to have the timezone as a variable, have this snippet of code somewhere near the top of the page:

<?php
    session_start();
    $timezone = $_SESSION['time'];
?>

This will read the session variable "time", which we are now about to create.

On the same page, in the <head> section, first of all you need to include jQuery:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.min.js"></script>

Also in the <head> section, paste this jQuery:

<script type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function() {
        if("<?php echo $timezone; ?>".length==0){
            var visitortime = new Date();
            var visitortimezone = "GMT " + -visitortime.getTimezoneOffset()/60;
            $.ajax({
                type: "GET",
                url: "http://example.com/timezone.php",
                data: 'time='+ visitortimezone,
                success: function(){
                    location.reload();
                }
            });
        }
    });
</script>

You may or may not have noticed, but you need to change the url to your actual domain.

One last thing. You are probably wondering what the heck timezone.php is. Well, it is simply this: (create a new file called timezone.php and point to it with the above url)

<?php
    session_start();
    $_SESSION['time'] = $_GET['time'];
?>

If this works correctly, it will first load the page, execute the JavaScript, and reload the page. You will then be able to read the $timezone variable and use it to your pleasure! It returns the current UTC/GMT time zone offset (GMT -7) or whatever timezone you are in.

How to echo shell commands as they are executed

Another option is to put "-x" at the top of your script instead of on the command line:

$ ./server

simple custom event

This is an easy way to create custom events and raise them. You create a delegate and an event in the class you are throwing from. Then subscribe to the event from another part of your code. You have already got a custom event argument class so you can build on that to make other event argument classes. N.B: I have not compiled this code.

public partial class Form1 : Form
{
    private TestClass _testClass;
    public Form1()
    {
        InitializeComponent();
        _testClass = new TestClass();
        _testClass.OnUpdateStatus += new TestClass.StatusUpdateHandler(UpdateStatus);
    }

    private void UpdateStatus(object sender, ProgressEventArgs e)
    {
        SetStatus(e.Status);
    }

    private void SetStatus(string status)
    {
        label1.Text = status;
    }

    private void button1_Click_1(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
         TestClass.Func();
    }

}

public class TestClass
{
    public delegate void StatusUpdateHandler(object sender, ProgressEventArgs e);
    public event StatusUpdateHandler OnUpdateStatus;

    public static void Func()
    {
        //time consuming code
        UpdateStatus(status);
        // time consuming code
        UpdateStatus(status);
    }

    private void UpdateStatus(string status)
    {
        // Make sure someone is listening to event
        if (OnUpdateStatus == null) return;

        ProgressEventArgs args = new ProgressEventArgs(status);
        OnUpdateStatus(this, args);
    }
}

public class ProgressEventArgs : EventArgs
{
    public string Status { get; private set; }

    public ProgressEventArgs(string status)
    {
        Status = status;
    }
}

Center the nav in Twitter Bootstrap

For anyone needing this for Bootstrap 3, it is now much easier.

The new nav-justified class can be used to center all of the navbar links..

http://www.bootply.com/g3g125MLGr

<div class="navbar">
  <ul class="nav nav-justified" id="myNav">
    <li><a href="#">Home</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link</a></li>
  </ul>
</div>

Or with a little CSS you can center just the brand/logo, and keep the left/right links separate..

C: scanf to array

The %d conversion specifier will only convert one decimal integer. It doesn't know that you're passing an array, it can't modify its behavior based on that. The conversion specifier specifies the conversion.

There is no specifier for arrays, you have to do it explicitly. Here's an example with four conversions:

if(scanf("%d %d %d %d", &array[0], &array[1], &array[2], &array[3]) == 4)
  printf("got four numbers\n");

Note that this requires whitespace between the input numbers.

If the id is a single 11-digit number, it's best to treat as a string:

char id[12];

if(scanf("%11s", id) == 1)
{
  /* inspect the *character* in id[0], compare with '1' or '2' for instance. */
}

Java program to get the current date without timestamp

You could use

// Format a string containing a date.
import java.util.Calendar;
import java.util.GregorianCalendar;
import static java.util.Calendar.*;

Calendar c = GregorianCalendar.getInstance();
String s = String.format("Duke's Birthday: %1$tm %1$te,%1$tY", c);
// -> s == "Duke's Birthday: May 23, 1995"

Have a look at the Formatter API documentation.

Difference between staticmethod and classmethod

@classmethod : can be used to create a shared global access to all the instances created of that class..... like updating a record by multiple users.... I particulary found it use ful when creating singletons as well..:)

@static method: has nothing to do with the class or instance being associated with ...but for readability can use static method

Hidden features of Python

Function argument unpacking

You can unpack a list or a dictionary as function arguments using * and **.

For example:

def draw_point(x, y):
    # do some magic

point_foo = (3, 4)
point_bar = {'y': 3, 'x': 2}

draw_point(*point_foo)
draw_point(**point_bar)

Very useful shortcut since lists, tuples and dicts are widely used as containers.

A good Sorted List for Java

Phuong:

Sorting 40,000 random numbers:

0.022 seconds

import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.Collections;
import java.util.List;
import java.util.Random;

public class test
{
    public static void main(String[] args)
    {
        List<Integer> nums = new ArrayList<Integer>();
        Random rand = new Random();
        for( int i = 0; i < 40000; i++ )
        {
            nums.add( rand.nextInt(Integer.MAX_VALUE) );
        }

        long start = System.nanoTime();
        Collections.sort(nums);
        long end = System.nanoTime();

        System.out.println((end-start)/1e9);
    }
}

Since you rarely need sorting, as per your problem statement, this is probably more efficient than it needs to be.

jQuery: Change button text on click

Long Press in JavaScript?

You could set the timeout for that element on mouse down and clear it on mouse up:

$("a").mousedown(function() {
    // set timeout for this element
    var timeout = window.setTimeout(function() { /* … */ }, 1234);
    $(this).mouseup(function() {
        // clear timeout for this element
        window.clearTimeout(timeout);
        // reset mouse up event handler
        $(this).unbind("mouseup");
        return false;
    });
    return false;
});

With this each element gets its own timeout.

How to get the last value of an ArrayList

How about this.. Somewhere in your class...

List<E> list = new ArrayList<E>();
private int i = -1;
    public void addObjToList(E elt){
        i++;
        list.add(elt);
    }

    public E getObjFromList(){
        if(i == -1){
            //If list is empty handle the way you would like to... I am returning a null object
            return null; // or throw an exception
        }

        E object = list.get(i);
        list.remove(i); //Optional - makes list work like a stack
        i--;            //Optional - makes list work like a stack
        return object;
    }

How to calculate DATE Difference in PostgreSQL?

CAST both fields to datatype DATE and you can use a minus:

(CAST(MAX(joindate) AS date) - CAST(MIN(joindate) AS date)) as DateDifference

Test case:

SELECT (CAST(MAX(joindate) AS date) - CAST(MIN(joindate) AS date)) as DateDifference
FROM
    generate_series('2014-01-01'::timestamp, '2014-02-01'::timestamp, interval '1 hour') g(joindate);

Result: 31

Or create a function datediff():

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION datediff(timestamp, timestamp)
RETURNS int
LANGUAGE sql
AS
$$
    SELECT CAST($1 AS date) - CAST($2 AS date) as DateDifference
$$;

Use of contains in Java ArrayList<String>

Perhaps you need to post the code that caused your exception. If the above is all you have, perhaps you just failed to actually initialise the array.

Using contains here should work though.

What is the "right" JSON date format?

Assembly Language - How to do Modulo?

If you don't care too much about performance and want to use the straightforward way, you can use either DIV or IDIV.

DIV or IDIV takes only one operand where it divides a certain register with this operand, the operand can be register or memory location only.

When operand is a byte: AL = AL / operand, AH = remainder (modulus).

Ex:

MOV AL,31h ; Al = 31h

DIV BL ; Al (quotient)= 08h, Ah(remainder)= 01h

when operand is a word: AX = (AX) / operand, DX = remainder (modulus).

Ex:

MOV AX,9031h ; Ax = 9031h

DIV BX ; Ax=1808h & Dx(remainder)= 01h

How can I get the corresponding table header (th) from a table cell (td)?

var $th = $td.closest('tbody').prev('thead').find('> tr > th:eq(' + $td.index() + ')');

Or a little bit simplified

var $th = $td.closest('table').find('th').eq($td.index());

Configuration System Failed to Initialize

If you have a custom section, you need to mention that under configSections right below configurations tag.

Please check your transform files, make sure you remove the unnecessary tags.only the section that are going to vary needs to be there in transform files. dont mention config section in the transform files if not needed. this would also cause the problem.

if you have any syntax error in machine.config, then also this error is expected.

py2exe - generate single executable file

As the other poster mention, py2exe, will generate an executable + some libraries to load. You can also have some data to add to your program.

Next step is to use an installer, to package all this into one easy-to-use installable/unistallable program.

I have used InnoSetup with delight for several years and for commercial programs, so I heartily recommend it.

Constructor of an abstract class in C#

There are two following important features that prevent to inherit Abstract class

  1. Abstract class must have an abstract method otherwise it is not a abstract class

  2. Abstract class must be inherited by derived class,So if a class inherited by other class than what is use of to create object of that class

Execute jQuery function after another function completes

Deferred promises are a nice way to chain together function execution neatly and easily. Whether AJAX or normal functions, they offer greater flexibility than callbacks, and I've found easier to grasp.

function Typer()
{
var dfd = $.Deferred();
    var srcText = 'EXAMPLE ';
    var i = 0;
    var result = srcText[i];

UPDATE :

////////////////////////////////

  var timer=    setInterval(function() {
                    if(i == srcText.length) {

    // clearInterval(this);

       clearInterval(timer);

////////////////////////////////

   dfd.resolve();
                        };
                        i++;
                        result += srcText[i].replace("\n", "<br />");
                        $("#message").html( result);
                },
                100);
              return dfd.promise();
            }

I've modified the play function so it returns a promise when the audio finishes playing, which might be useful to some. The third function fires when sound finishes playing.

   function playBGM()
    {
      var playsound = $.Deferred();
      $('#bgm')[0].play();
      $("#bgm").on("ended", function() {
         playsound.resolve();
      });
        return playsound.promise();
    }

    function thirdFunction() {
        alert('third function');
    }

Now call the whole thing with the following: (be sure to use Jquery 1.9.1 or above as I found that 1.7.2 executes all the functions at once, rather than waiting for each to resolve.)

Typer().then(playBGM).then(thirdFunction);

Before today, I had no luck using deferred promises in this way, and finally have grasped it. Precisely timed, chained interface events occurring exactly when we want them to, including async events, has never been easy. For me at least, I now have it under control thanks largely to others asking questions here.

Is it possible to output a SELECT statement from a PL/SQL block?

You need to use Native dynamic SQL. Also, you do not need BEGIN-END to run SQL command:

Output:

Get output parameter value in ADO.NET

The other response shows this, but essentially you just need to create a SqlParameter, set the Direction to Output, and add it to the SqlCommand's Parameters collection. Then execute the stored procedure and get the value of the parameter.

Using your code sample:

// SqlConnection and SqlCommand are IDisposable, so stack a couple using()'s
using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(connectionString))
using (SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("sproc", conn))
{
   // Create parameter with Direction as Output (and correct name and type)
   SqlParameter outputIdParam = new SqlParameter("@ID", SqlDbType.Int)
   {
      Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
   };

   cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
   cmd.Parameters.Add(outputIdParam);

   conn.Open();
   cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();

   // Some various ways to grab the output depending on how you would like to
   // handle a null value returned from the query (shown in comment for each).

   // Note: You can use either the SqlParameter variable declared
   // above or access it through the Parameters collection by name:
   //   outputIdParam.Value == cmd.Parameters["@ID"].Value

   // Throws FormatException
   int idFromString = int.Parse(outputIdParam.Value.ToString());

   // Throws InvalidCastException
   int idFromCast = (int)outputIdParam.Value;

   // idAsNullableInt remains null
   int? idAsNullableInt = outputIdParam.Value as int?;

   // idOrDefaultValue is 0 (or any other value specified to the ?? operator)
   int idOrDefaultValue = outputIdParam.Value as int? ?? default(int);

   conn.Close();
}

Be careful when getting the Parameters[].Value, since the type needs to be cast from object to what you're declaring it as. And the SqlDbType used when you create the SqlParameter needs to match the type in the database. If you're going to just output it to the console, you may just be using Parameters["@Param"].Value.ToString() (either explictly or implicitly via a Console.Write() or String.Format() call).

EDIT: Over 3.5 years and almost 20k views and nobody had bothered to mention that it didn't even compile for the reason specified in my "be careful" comment in the original post. Nice. Fixed it based on good comments from @Walter Stabosz and @Stephen Kennedy and to match the update code edit in the question from @abatishchev.

nginx 502 bad gateway

The 502 error appears because nginx cannot hand off to php5-cgi. You can try reconfiguring php5-cgi to use unix sockets as opposed to tcp .. then adjust the server config to point to the socket instead of the tcp ...

ps auxww | grep php5-cgi #-- is the process running?
netstat -an | grep 9000 # is the port open?

Tomcat 8 Maven Plugin for Java 8

groupId and Mojo name change Since version 2.0-beta-1 tomcat mojos has been renamed to tomcat6 and tomcat7 with the same goals.

You must configure your pom to use this new groupId:

<pluginManagement>
  <plugins>
    <plugin>
      <groupId>org.apache.tomcat.maven</groupId>
      <artifactId>tomcat6-maven-plugin</artifactId>
      <version>2.3-SNAPSHOT</version>
    </plugin>
    <plugin>
      <groupId>org.apache.tomcat.maven</groupId>
      <artifactId>tomcat7-maven-plugin</artifactId>
      <version>2.3-SNAPSHOT</version>
    </plugin>
  </plugins>
</pluginManagement>

Or add the groupId in your settings.xml

.... org.apache.tomcat.maven ....

Force “landscape” orientation mode

I use some css like this (based on css tricks):

@media screen and (min-width: 320px) and (max-width: 767px) and (orientation: portrait) {
  html {
    transform: rotate(-90deg);
    transform-origin: left top;
    width: 100vh;
    height: 100vw;
    overflow-x: hidden;
    position: absolute;
    top: 100%;
    left: 0;
  }
}

Make div fill remaining space along the main axis in flexbox

Basically I was trying to get my code to have a middle section on a 'row' to auto-adjust to the content on both sides (in my case, a dotted line separator). Like @Michael_B suggested, the key is using display:flex on the row container and at least making sure your middle container on the row has a flex-grow value of at least 1 higher than the outer containers (if outer containers don't have any flex-grow properties applied, middle container only needs 1 for flex-grow).

Here's a pic of what I was trying to do and sample code for how I solved it.

android activity has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.phonewindow$decorview Issue

I got this error but it is resolved interesting. As first, i got this error at api level 17. When i call a thread (AsyncTask or others) without progress dialog then i call an other thread method again using progress dialog, i got that crash and the reason is about usage of progress dialog.

In my case, there are two results that;

  • I took show(); method of progress dialog before first thread starts then i took dismiss(); method of progress dialog before last thread ends.

So :

ProgresDialog progressDialog = new ...

//configure progressDialog

progressDialog.show();

start firstThread {
...
}

...

start lastThread {
...
}

//be sure to finish threads

progressDialog.dismiss();
  • This is so strange but that error has an ability about destroy itself at least for me :)

ToggleClass animate jQuery?

You can simply use CSS transitions, see this fiddle

Using strtok with a std::string

#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <sstream>
int main(){
    std::string myText("some-text-to-tokenize");
    std::istringstream iss(myText);
    std::string token;
    while (std::getline(iss, token, '-'))
    {
        std::cout << token << std::endl;
    }
    return 0;
}

Or, as mentioned, use boost for more flexibility.

How to loop over files in directory and change path and add suffix to filename

You can use finds null separated output option with read to iterate over directory structures safely.

#!/bin/bash
find . -type f -print0 | while IFS= read -r -d $'\0' file;
  do echo "$file" ;
done

So for your case

#!/bin/bash
find . -maxdepth 1 -type f  -print0 | while IFS= read -r -d $'\0' file; do
  for ((i=0; i<=3; i++)); do
    ./MyProgram.exe "$file" 'Logs/'"`basename "$file"`""$i"'.txt'
  done
done

additionally

#!/bin/bash
while IFS= read -r -d $'\0' file; do
  for ((i=0; i<=3; i++)); do
    ./MyProgram.exe "$file" 'Logs/'"`basename "$file"`""$i"'.txt'
  done
done < <(find . -maxdepth 1 -type f  -print0)

will run the while loop in the current scope of the script ( process ) and allow the output of find to be used in setting variables if needed

Return value from nested function in Javascript

Just FYI, Geocoder is asynchronous so the accepted answer while logical doesn't really work in this instance. I would prefer to have an outside object that acts as your updater.

var updater = {};

function geoCodeCity(goocoord) {
    var geocoder = new google.maps.Geocoder();
    geocoder.geocode({
        'latLng': goocoord
    }, function(results, status) {
        if (status == google.maps.GeocoderStatus.OK) {
            updater.currentLocation = results[1].formatted_address;
        } else {
            if (status == "ERROR") {
                    console.log(status);
                }
        }
    });
};

Switch focus between editor and integrated terminal in Visual Studio Code

While there are a lot of modal toggles and navigation shortcuts for VS Code, there isn't one specifically for "move from editor to terminal, and back again". However you can compose the two steps by overloading the key and using the when clause.

Open the keybindings.json from the editor: CMD-SHIFT-P -> Preferences: Open Keyboard Shortcuts File and add these entries:

// Toggle between terminal and editor focus
{ "key": "ctrl+`", "command": "workbench.action.terminal.focus"},
{ "key": "ctrl+`", "command": "workbench.action.focusActiveEditorGroup", "when": "terminalFocus"}

With these shortcuts I will focus between the editor and the Integrated Terminal using the same keystroke.

How do I hide certain files from the sidebar in Visual Studio Code?

I would also like to recommend vscode extension Peep, which allows you to toggle hide on the excluded files in your projects settings.json.

Hit F1 for vscode command line (command palette), then

ext install [enter] peep [enter]

You can bind "extension.peepToggle" to a key like Ctrl+Shift+P (same as F1 by default) for easy toggling. Hit Ctrl+K Ctrl+S for key bindings, enter peep, select Peep Toggle and add your binding.

Remove directory from remote repository after adding them to .gitignore

This method applies the standard .gitignore behavior, and does not require manually specifying the files that need to be ignored.

Can't use --exclude-from=.gitignore anymore :/ - Here's the updated method:

General advice: start with a clean repo - everything committed, nothing pending in working directory or index, and make a backup!

#commit up-to-date .gitignore (if not already existing)
#this command must be run on each branch
git add .gitignore
git commit -m "Create .gitignore"

#apply standard git ignore behavior only to current index, not working directory (--cached)
#if this command returns nothing, ensure /.git/info/exclude AND/OR .gitignore exist
#this command must be run on each branch
git ls-files -z --ignored --exclude-standard | xargs -0 git rm --cached

#optionally add anything to the index that was previously ignored but now shouldn't be:
git add *

#commit again
#optionally use the --amend flag to merge this commit with the previous one instead of creating 2 commits.

git commit -m "re-applied modified .gitignore"

#other devs who pull after this commit is pushed will see the newly-.gitignored files DELETED

If you also need to purge the newly-ignored files from the branch's commit history or if you don't want the newly-ignored files to be deleted from future pulls, see this answer.

How do I create a new Git branch from an old commit?

git checkout -b NEW_BRANCH_NAME COMMIT_ID

This will create a new branch called 'NEW_BRANCH_NAME' and check it out.

("check out" means "to switch to the branch")

git branch NEW_BRANCH_NAME COMMIT_ID

This just creates the new branch without checking it out.

in the comments many people seem to prefer doing this in two steps. here's how to do so in two steps:

git checkout COMMIT_ID
# you are now in the "detached head" state
git checkout -b NEW_BRANCH_NAME

 $('elements-to-match').click(function(){
        alert("The id is "+ this.id );

no need to wrap it in a jquery object

How can I get a list of all values in select box?

You had two problems:

1) The order in which you included the HTML. Try changing the dropdown from "onLoad" to "no wrap - head" in the JavaScript settings of your fiddle.

2) Your function prints the values. What you're actually after is the text

x.options[i].text; instead of x.options[i].value;

There are four ways, all of which I tested:

  • Test flight

  • Install from iTunes - Create .ipa as ad-hoc and normal sync with ipad & itunes.

  • Or best way you can create a URL for install while creating ipa select as enterprise and create index file with plist. This will work with individual developer account too.

IF - ELSE IF - ELSE Structure in Excel

When FIND returns #VALUE!, it is an error, not a string, so you can't compare FIND(...) with "#VALUE!", you need to check if FIND returns an error with ISERROR. Also FIND can work on multiple characters.

So a simplified and working version of your formula would be:

=IF(ISERROR(FIND("abc",A1))=FALSE, "Green", IF(ISERROR(FIND("xyz",A1))=FALSE, "Yellow", "Red"))

Or, to remove the double negations:

=IF(ISERROR(FIND("abc",A1)), IF(ISERROR(FIND("xyz",A1)), "Red", "Yellow"),"Green")

How to call servlet through a JSP page

there isn't method to call Servlet. You should make mapping in web.xml and then trigger this mapping.

Example: web.xml:

  <servlet>
    <servlet-name>hello</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>test.HelloServlet</servlet-class>
  </servlet>

  <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>hello</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/hello</url-pattern>
  </servlet-mapping>

This mapping means that every call to http://yoursite/yourwebapp/hello trigger this servlet For example this jsp:

<jsp:forward page="/hello"/>

Javascript change Div style

function abc() {
    var color = document.getElementById("test").style.color;
    if (color === "red")
         document.getElementById("test").style.color="black";
    else
         document.getElementById("test").style.color="red";
}

Debugging Stored Procedure in SQL Server 2008

One requirement for remote debugging is that the windows account used to run SSMS be part of the sysadmin role. See this MSDN link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc646024%28v=sql.105%29.aspx

The program can’t start because MSVCR71.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this program

Based on this page:

  • Run regedit (remember to run it as the administrator)
  • Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • Expand SOFTWARE
  • Expand Microsoft
  • Expand Windows
  • Expand CurrentVersion
  • Expand App Paths
  • At App Paths, add a new KEY called sqldeveloper.exe
  • Expand sqldeveloper.exe
  • Modify the (DEFAULT) value to the full pathway to the sqldeveloper executable (See example below step 11)
  • Create a new STRING VALUE called PATH and set it value to the sqldeveloper pathway + \jdk\jre\bin

Is it possible to print a variable's type in standard C++?

Howard Hinnant used magic numbers to extract type name. ??? suggested string prefix and suffix. But prefix/suffix keep changing. With “probe_type” type_name automatically calculates prefix and suffix sizes for “probe_type” to extract type name:

#include <string_view>
using namespace std;

namespace typeName {
 template <typename T>
  constexpr string_view wrapped_type_name () {
#ifdef __clang__
    return __PRETTY_FUNCTION__;
#elif defined(__GNUC__)
    return  __PRETTY_FUNCTION__;
#elif defined(_MSC_VER)
    return  __FUNCSIG__;
#endif
  }

  class probe_type;
  constexpr string_view probe_type_name ("typeName::probe_type");
  constexpr string_view probe_type_name_elaborated ("class typeName::probe_type");
  constexpr string_view probe_type_name_used (wrapped_type_name<probe_type> ().find (probe_type_name_elaborated) != -1 ? probe_type_name_elaborated : probe_type_name);

  constexpr size_t prefix_size () {
    return wrapped_type_name<probe_type> ().find (probe_type_name_used);
  }

  constexpr size_t suffix_size () {
    return wrapped_type_name<probe_type> ().length () - prefix_size () - probe_type_name_used.length ();
  }

  template <typename T>
  string_view type_name () {
    constexpr auto type_name = wrapped_type_name<T> ();

    return type_name.substr (prefix_size (), type_name.length () - prefix_size () - suffix_size ());
  }
}

#include <iostream>

using typeName::type_name;
using typeName::probe_type;

class test;

int main () {
  cout << type_name<class test> () << endl;

  cout << type_name<const int*&> () << endl;
  cout << type_name<unsigned int> () << endl;

  const int ic = 42;
  const int* pic = &ic;
  const int*& rpic = pic;
  cout << type_name<decltype(ic)> () << endl;
  cout << type_name<decltype(pic)> () << endl;
  cout << type_name<decltype(rpic)> () << endl;

  cout << type_name<probe_type> () << endl;
}

Python: how to capture image from webcam on click using OpenCV

Here is a simple program that displays the camera feed in a cv2.namedWindow and will take a snapshot when you hit SPACE. It will also quit if you hit ESC.

import cv2

cam = cv2.VideoCapture(0)

cv2.namedWindow("test")

img_counter = 0

while True:
    ret, frame = cam.read()
    if not ret:
        print("failed to grab frame")
        break
    cv2.imshow("test", frame)

    k = cv2.waitKey(1)
    if k%256 == 27:
        # ESC pressed
        print("Escape hit, closing...")
        break
    elif k%256 == 32:
        # SPACE pressed
        img_name = "opencv_frame_{}.png".format(img_counter)
        cv2.imwrite(img_name, frame)
        print("{} written!".format(img_name))
        img_counter += 1

cam.release()

cv2.destroyAllWindows()

I think this should answer your question for the most part. If there is any line of it that you don't understand let me know and I'll add comments.

If you need to grab multiple images per press of the SPACE key, you will need an inner loop or perhaps just make a function that grabs a certain number of images.

Note that the key events are from the cv2.namedWindow so it has to have focus.

HTML Button : Navigate to Other Page - Different Approaches

I use method 3 because it's the most understandable for others (whenever you see an <a> tag, you know it's a link) and when you are part of a team, you have to make simple things ;).

And finally I don't think it's useful and efficient to use JS simply to navigate to an other page.

Nodejs - Redirect url

I used a switch statement, with the default as a 404:

var fs = require("fs");
var http = require("http");

function send404Response (response){
    response.writeHead(404, {"Content-Type": "text/html"});
    fs.createReadStream("./path/to/404.html").pipe(response);
}

function onRequest (request, response){
    switch (request.url){
        case "/page1":
            //statements
            break;
        case "/page2":
            //statements
            break;
        default:
        //if no 'match' is found
            send404Response(response);
            break;
    }
}

http.createServer(onRequest).listen(8080);

How to get HttpRequestMessage data

I suggest that you should not do it like this. Action methods should be designed to be easily unit-tested. In this case, you should not access data directly from the request, because if you do it like this, when you want to unit test this code you have to construct a HttpRequestMessage.

You should do it like this to let MVC do all the model binding for you:

[HttpPost]
public void Confirmation(YOURDTO yourobj)//assume that you define YOURDTO elsewhere
{
        //your logic to process input parameters.

}

In case you do want to access the request. You just access the Request property of the controller (not through parameters). Like this:

[HttpPost]
public void Confirmation()
{
    var content = Request.Content.ReadAsStringAsync().Result;
}

In MVC, the Request property is actually a wrapper around .NET HttpRequest and inherit from a base class. When you need to unit test, you could also mock this object.

"Invalid signature file" when attempting to run a .jar

For those using gradle and trying to create and use a fat jar, the following syntax might help.

jar {
    doFirst {
        from { configurations.compile.collect { it.isDirectory() ? it : zipTree(it) } }
    }
    exclude 'META-INF/*.RSA', 'META-INF/*.SF','META-INF/*.DSA'
}

XPath: How to select elements based on their value?

The condition below:

//Element[@attribute1="abc" and @attribute2="xyz" and Data]

checks for the existence of the element Data within Element and not for element value Data.

Instead you can use

//Element[@attribute1="abc" and @attribute2="xyz" and text()="Data"]

AmazonS3 putObject with InputStream length example

While writing to S3, you need to specify the length of S3 object to be sure that there are no out of memory errors.

Using IOUtils.toByteArray(stream) is also prone to OOM errors because this is backed by ByteArrayOutputStream

So, the best option is to first write the inputstream to a temp file on local disk and then use that file to write to S3 by specifying the length of temp file.

What are the ways to sum matrix elements in MATLAB?

Another answer for the first question is to use one for loop and perform linear indexing into the array using the function NUMEL to get the total number of elements:

total = 0;
for i = 1:numel(A)
  total = total+A(i);
end

Android OnClickListener - identify a button

Five Ways to Wire Up an Event Listener is a great article overviewing the various ways to set up a single event listener. Let me expand that here for multiple listeners.

1. Member Class

public class main extends Activity {
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);
        //attach an instance of HandleClick to the Button
        HandleClick handleClick = new HandleClick();
        findViewById(R.id.button1).setOnClickListener(handleClick);
        findViewById(R.id.button2).setOnClickListener(handleClick);
    }
    private class HandleClick implements OnClickListener{
        public void onClick(View view) {
            switch(view.getId()) {
            case R.id.button1:
                // do stuff
                break;
            case R.id.button2:
                // do stuff
                break;
            }
        }
    }
}

2. Interface Type

public class main extends Activity {
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);
        findViewById(R.id.button1).setOnClickListener(handleClick);
        findViewById(R.id.button2).setOnClickListener(handleClick);
    }
    private OnClickListener handleClick = new OnClickListener() {
        public void onClick(View view) {
            switch (view.getId()) {
            case R.id.button1:
                // do stuff
                break;
            case R.id.button2:
                // do stuff
                break;
            }
        }
    };
}

3. Anonymous Inner Class

public class main extends Activity {
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);
        findViewById(R.id.button1).setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
            public void onClick(View view) {
                // do stuff
            }
        });
        findViewById(R.id.button2).setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
            public void onClick(View view) {
                // do stuff
            }
        });
    }
}

4. Implementation in Activity

public class main extends Activity implements OnClickListener {
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);
        findViewById(R.id.button1).setOnClickListener(this);
        findViewById(R.id.button2).setOnClickListener(this);
    }
    public void onClick(View view) {
        switch (view.getId()) {
        case R.id.button1:
            // do stuff
            break;
        case R.id.button2:
            // do stuff
            break;
        }
    }
}

5. Attribute in View Layout for OnClick Events

public class main extends Activity {
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);
    }
    public void HandleClick(View view) {
        switch (view.getId()) {
        case R.id.button1:
            // do stuff
            break;
        case R.id.button2:
            // do stuff
            break;
        }
    }
}

And in xml:

<Button
    android:id="@+id/button1"
    android:layout_width="wrap_content"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:onClick="HandleClick" />
<Button
    android:id="@+id/button2"
    android:layout_width="wrap_content"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:onClick="HandleClick" />

Stock ticker symbol lookup API

Your best bets are probably going with one of the other lookup services (still screen-scraping), and checking whether they don't require CAPTCHAs.

The last appears the least likely to require a CAPTCHA at any point, but it's worth checking all three.

Visual Studio Code - Target of URI doesn't exist 'package:flutter/material.dart'

Author of the Dart Code plugin here! From the screenshot, I would say this is because your flutter project is in a sub-folder of the folder open in Code. We only scan the opened-folder to check whether it's a Flutter project - which then changes the SDK we launch and also enables the Flutter functionality (like the daemon and debugger).

You should re-open the "todo" folder directly.

If you want to have multiple projects open together, use multi-root workspaces, since Dart Code is multi-root-aware and will check each of the folders in the workspace when deciding if it needs to enable Flutter functionality.

Update

This case should be better supported in the Dart plugin now, so opening the immediate parent folder of a Flutter project should work as expected.

Mysql SELECT CASE WHEN something then return field

You are mixing the 2 different CASE syntaxes inappropriately.

Use this style (Searched)

  CASE
  WHEN u.nnmu ='0' THEN mu.naziv_mesta
  WHEN u.nnmu ='1' THEN m.naziv_mesta
 ELSE 'GRESKA'
 END as mesto_utovara,

Or this style (Simple)

  CASE u.nnmu
  WHEN '0' THEN mu.naziv_mesta
  WHEN '1' THEN m.naziv_mesta
 ELSE 'GRESKA'
 END as mesto_utovara,

Not This (Simple but with boolean search predicates)

  CASE u.nnmu
  WHEN u.nnmu ='0' THEN mu.naziv_mesta
  WHEN u.nnmu ='1' THEN m.naziv_mesta
 ELSE 'GRESKA'
 END as mesto_utovara,

In MySQL this will end up testing whether u.nnmu is equal to the value of the boolean expression u.nnmu ='0' itself. Regardless of whether u.nnmu is 1 or 0 the result of the case expression itself will be 1

For example if nmu = '0' then (nnmu ='0') evaluates as true (1) and (nnmu ='1') evaluates as false (0). Substituting these into the case expression gives

 SELECT CASE  '0'
  WHEN 1 THEN '0'
  WHEN 0 THEN '1'
 ELSE 'GRESKA'
 END as mesto_utovara

if nmu = '1' then (nnmu ='0') evaluates as false (0) and (nnmu ='1') evaluates as true (1). Substituting these into the case expression gives

 SELECT CASE  '1'
  WHEN 0 THEN '0'
  WHEN 1 THEN '1'
 ELSE 'GRESKA'
 END as mesto_utovara

After updating Entity Framework model, Visual Studio does not see changes

Test if string begins with a string?

Judging by the declaration and description of the startsWith Java function, the "most straight forward way" to implement it in VBA would either be with Left:

Public Function startsWith(str As String, prefix As String) As Boolean
    startsWith = Left(str, Len(prefix)) = prefix
End Function

Or, if you want to have the offset parameter available, with Mid:

Public Function startsWith(str As String, prefix As String, Optional toffset As Integer = 0) As Boolean
    startsWith = Mid(str, toffset + 1, Len(prefix)) = prefix
End Function

CSV with comma or semicolon?

Initially it was to be a comma, however as the comma is often used as a decimal point it wouldnt be such good separator, hence others like the semicolon, mostly country dependant

What are the parameters for the number Pipe - Angular 2

The parameter has this syntax:

{minIntegerDigits}.{minFractionDigits}-{maxFractionDigits}

So your example of '1.2-2' means:

  • A minimum of 1 digit will be shown before decimal point
  • It will show at least 2 digits after decimal point
  • But not more than 2 digits

PHP validation/regex for URL

As per John Gruber (Daring Fireball):

Regex:

(?i)\b((?:https?://|www\d{0,3}[.]|[a-z0-9.\-]+[.][a-z]{2,4}/)(?:[^\s()<>]+|\(([^\s()<>]+|(\([^\s()<>]+\)))*\))+(?:\(([^\s()<>]+|(\([^\s()<>]+\)))*\)|[^\s`!()\[\]{};:'\".,<>?«»“”‘’]))

using in preg_match():

preg_match("/(?i)\b((?:https?://|www\d{0,3}[.]|[a-z0-9.\-]+[.][a-z]{2,4}/)(?:[^\s()<>]+|\(([^\s()<>]+|(\([^\s()<>]+\)))*\))+(?:\(([^\s()<>]+|(\([^\s()<>]+\)))*\)|[^\s`!()\[\]{};:'\".,<>?«»“”‘’]))/", $url)

Here is the extended regex pattern (with comments):

(?xi)
\b
(                       # Capture 1: entire matched URL
  (?:
    https?:// # http or https protocol
    |                       #   or
    www\d{0,3}[.]           # "www.", "www1.", "www2." … "www999."
    |                           #   or
    [a-z0-9.\-]+[.][a-z]{2,4}/ # looks like domain name followed by a slash
  )
  (?:                       # One or more:
    [^\s()<>]+                  # Run of non-space, non-()<>
    |                           #   or
    \(([^\s()<>]+|(\([^\s()<>]+\)))*\) # balanced parens, up to 2 levels
  )+
  (?:                       # End with:
    \(([^\s()<>]+|(\([^\s()<>]+\)))*\) # balanced parens, up to 2 levels
    |                               #   or
    [^\s`!()\[\]{};:'".,<>?«»“”‘’] # not a space or one of these punct chars
  )
)

How to style a div to have a background color for the entire width of the content, and not just for the width of the display?

The width is being restricted by the size of the body. If you make the width of the body larger you will see it stays on one line with the background color.

To maintain the minimum width: min-width:100%
