How can I ask the Selenium-WebDriver to wait for few seconds in Java?

Answer : wait for few seconds before element visibility using Selenium WebDriver go through below methods.

implicitlyWait() : WebDriver instance wait until full page load. You muse use 30 to 60 seconds to wait full page load.

driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(30, TimeUnit.SECONDS);

ExplicitlyWait WebDriverWait() : WebDriver instance wait until full page load.

WebDriverWait wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, 60);

wait.until(ExpectedConditions.visibilityOf(textbox));

driver.findElement(By.id("Year")).sendKeys(allKeys);

Note : Please use ExplicitlyWait WebDriverWait() to handle any particular WebElement.

CS0120: An object reference is required for the nonstatic field, method, or property 'foo'

I actually got this error because I was checking InnerHtml for some content that was generated dynamically - i.e. a control that is runat=server.

To solve this I had to remove the "static" keyword on my method, and it ran fine.

What does localhost:8080 mean?

http uses port 80, and understandably, your internet browser will automatically use that port when you type in an address - unless you specify another port. Now, when running a web server on your computer, you need to access that server somehow - and since port 80 is already busy, you need to use a different port to successfully connect to it. Although any open port is fair game, usually such a server is configured to use port 8080, hence when accessing your server you type in:

http:// (protocol) localhost (your computer) :8080 (port 8080) / (path pointing to the root of the public folder of your server)

BadImageFormatException. This will occur when running in 64 bit mode with the 32 bit Oracle client components installed

I had the same problem in SSIS 2008. I tried to connect to an Oracle 11g using ODAC 12c 32 bit. Tried to install ODAC 12c 64 bit as well. SSIS was actually able to preview the table but when trying to run the package it was giving this error message. Nothing helped. Switched to VS 2013, now it was running in debug mode but got the same error when the running the package using dtexec /f filename. Then I found this page: http://sqlmag.com/comment/reply/17881.

To make it short it says: (if the page is still there just go to the page and follow the instrucrtions...) 1) Download and install the latest version of odac 64 bit xcopy from oracle site. 2) Download and install the latest version of odac 32 bit xcopy from oracle site. How? open a cmd shell AS AN ADMINSTARTOR and run: c:\64bitODACLocation> install.bat oledb c:\odac\odac64. the first parameter is the component you want to install. The second param is where to install to. install the 32 version as well like this: c:\32bitODACLocation> install.bat oledb c:\odac\odac32. 3) Change the path of the system to include c:\odac\odac32; c:\odac\odac32\bin; c:\odac\odac64;c:\odac\odac64\bin IN THIS ORDER. 4) Restart the machine. 5) make sure you have the same tnsnames.ora in both odac32\admin\network and odac64\admin\network folders (or at least the same entry for your connection). 6) Now open up SSIS in visual studio (I used the free 2013 version with the ssis package) - Use OLEDB and then select the Oracle Provider for OLE DB provider as your connection type. Set the name of the entry in your tnsnames.ora as the "server or file name". Username is your schema name (db name) and password is the password for schema. you are done!

Again, you can find the very detailed solution and much more in the original site.

This was the only thing which worked for me and did not mess up my environment.

Cheers! gcr

How do I remove the top margin in a web page?

Is your first element h1 or similar? That element's margin-top could be causing what seems like a margin on body.

How to generate a random alpha-numeric string

Algorithm

To generate a random string, concatenate characters drawn randomly from the set of acceptable symbols until the string reaches the desired length.

Implementation

Here's some fairly simple and very flexible code for generating random identifiers. Read the information that follows for important application notes.

public class RandomString {

    /**
     * Generate a random string.
     */
    public String nextString() {
        for (int idx = 0; idx < buf.length; ++idx)
            buf[idx] = symbols[random.nextInt(symbols.length)];
        return new String(buf);
    }

    public static final String upper = "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ";

    public static final String lower = upper.toLowerCase(Locale.ROOT);

    public static final String digits = "0123456789";

    public static final String alphanum = upper + lower + digits;

    private final Random random;

    private final char[] symbols;

    private final char[] buf;

    public RandomString(int length, Random random, String symbols) {
        if (length < 1) throw new IllegalArgumentException();
        if (symbols.length() < 2) throw new IllegalArgumentException();
        this.random = Objects.requireNonNull(random);
        this.symbols = symbols.toCharArray();
        this.buf = new char[length];
    }

    /**
     * Create an alphanumeric string generator.
     */
    public RandomString(int length, Random random) {
        this(length, random, alphanum);
    }

    /**
     * Create an alphanumeric strings from a secure generator.
     */
    public RandomString(int length) {
        this(length, new SecureRandom());
    }

    /**
     * Create session identifiers.
     */
    public RandomString() {
        this(21);
    }

}

Usage examples

Create an insecure generator for 8-character identifiers:

RandomString gen = new RandomString(8, ThreadLocalRandom.current());

Create a secure generator for session identifiers:

RandomString session = new RandomString();

Create a generator with easy-to-read codes for printing. The strings are longer than full alphanumeric strings to compensate for using fewer symbols:

String easy = RandomString.digits + "ACEFGHJKLMNPQRUVWXYabcdefhijkprstuvwx";
RandomString tickets = new RandomString(23, new SecureRandom(), easy);

Use as session identifiers

Generating session identifiers that are likely to be unique is not good enough, or you could just use a simple counter. Attackers hijack sessions when predictable identifiers are used.

There is tension between length and security. Shorter identifiers are easier to guess, because there are fewer possibilities. But longer identifiers consume more storage and bandwidth. A larger set of symbols helps, but might cause encoding problems if identifiers are included in URLs or re-entered by hand.

The underlying source of randomness, or entropy, for session identifiers should come from a random number generator designed for cryptography. However, initializing these generators can sometimes be computationally expensive or slow, so effort should be made to re-use them when possible.

Use as object identifiers

Not every application requires security. Random assignment can be an efficient way for multiple entities to generate identifiers in a shared space without any coordination or partitioning. Coordination can be slow, especially in a clustered or distributed environment, and splitting up a space causes problems when entities end up with shares that are too small or too big.

Identifiers generated without taking measures to make them unpredictable should be protected by other means if an attacker might be able to view and manipulate them, as happens in most web applications. There should be a separate authorization system that protects objects whose identifier can be guessed by an attacker without access permission.

Care must be also be taken to use identifiers that are long enough to make collisions unlikely given the anticipated total number of identifiers. This is referred to as "the birthday paradox." The probability of a collision, p, is approximately n2/(2qx), where n is the number of identifiers actually generated, q is the number of distinct symbols in the alphabet, and x is the length of the identifiers. This should be a very small number, like 2‑50 or less.

Working this out shows that the chance of collision among 500k 15-character identifiers is about 2‑52, which is probably less likely than undetected errors from cosmic rays, etc.

Comparison with UUIDs

According to their specification, UUIDs are not designed to be unpredictable, and should not be used as session identifiers.

UUIDs in their standard format take a lot of space: 36 characters for only 122 bits of entropy. (Not all bits of a "random" UUID are selected randomly.) A randomly chosen alphanumeric string packs more entropy in just 21 characters.

UUIDs are not flexible; they have a standardized structure and layout. This is their chief virtue as well as their main weakness. When collaborating with an outside party, the standardization offered by UUIDs may be helpful. For purely internal use, they can be inefficient.

How do I know the script file name in a Bash script?

if your invoke shell script like

/home/mike/runme.sh

$0 is full name

 /home/mike/runme.sh

basename $0 will get the base file name

 runme.sh

and you need to put this basic name into a variable like

filename=$(basename $0)

and add your additional text

echo "You are running $filename"

so your scripts like

/home/mike/runme.sh
#!/bin/bash
filename=$(basename $0)
echo "You are running $filename"

Convert a file path to Uri in Android

Why does printf not flush after the call unless a newline is in the format string?

by default, stdout is line buffered, stderr is none buffered and file is completely buffered.

String, StringBuffer, and StringBuilder

Difference between String and the other two classes is that String is immutable and the other two are mutable classes.

But why we have two classes for same purpose?

Reason is that StringBuffer is Thread safe and StringBuilder is not. StringBuilder is a new class on StringBuffer Api and it was introduced in JDK5 and is always recommended if you are working in a Single threaded environment as it is much Faster

For complete Details you can read http://www.codingeek.com/java/stringbuilder-and-stringbuffer-a-way-to-create-mutable-strings-in-java/

How do I get next month date from today's date and insert it in my database?

You can use PHP's strtotime() function:

// One month from today
$date = date('Y-m-d', strtotime('+1 month'));

// One month from a specific date
$date = date('Y-m-d', strtotime('+1 month', strtotime('2015-01-01')));

Just note that +1 month is not always calculated intuitively. It appears to always add the number of days that exist in the current month.

Current Date  | +1 month
-----------------------------------------------------
2015-01-01    | 2015-02-01   (+31 days)
2015-01-15    | 2015-02-15   (+31 days)
2015-01-30    | 2015-03-02   (+31 days, skips Feb)
2015-01-31    | 2015-03-03   (+31 days, skips Feb)
2015-02-15    | 2015-03-15   (+28 days)
2015-03-31    | 2015-05-01   (+31 days, skips April)
2015-12-31    | 2016-01-31   (+31 days)

Some other date/time intervals that you can use:

$date = date('Y-m-d'); // Initial date string to use in calculation

$date = date('Y-m-d', strtotime('+1 day', strtotime($date)));
$date = date('Y-m-d', strtotime('+1 week', strtotime($date)));
$date = date('Y-m-d', strtotime('+2 week', strtotime($date)));
$date = date('Y-m-d', strtotime('+1 month', strtotime($date)));
$date = date('Y-m-d', strtotime('+30 days', strtotime($date)));

how to remove the bold from a headline?

PHP function to make slug (URL string)

The most elegant way I think is using a Behat\Transliterator\Transliterator.

I need to extends this class by your class because it is an Abstract, some like this:

<?php
use Behat\Transliterator\Transliterator;

class Urlizer extends Transliterator
{
}

And then, just use it:

$text = "Master Ápiu";
$urlizer = new Urlizer();
$slug = $urlizer->transliterate($slug, "-");
echo $slug; // master-apiu

Of course you should put this things in your composer as well.

composer require behat/transliterator

Is floating point math broken?

In addition to the other correct answers, you may want to consider scaling your values to avoid problems with floating-point arithmetic.

For example:

var result = 1.0 + 2.0;     // result === 3.0 returns true

... instead of:

var result = 0.1 + 0.2;     // result === 0.3 returns false

The expression 0.1 + 0.2 === 0.3 returns false in JavaScript, but fortunately integer arithmetic in floating-point is exact, so decimal representation errors can be avoided by scaling.

As a practical example, to avoid floating-point problems where accuracy is paramount, it is recommended1 to handle money as an integer representing the number of cents: 2550 cents instead of 25.50 dollars.

Increase permgen space

You can use :

-XX:MaxPermSize=128m

to increase the space. But this usually only postpones the inevitable.

You can also enable the PermGen to be garbage collected

-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled

Usually this occurs when doing lots of redeploys. I am surprised you have it using something like indexing. Use virtualvm or jconsole to monitor the Perm gen space and check it levels off after warming up the indexing.

Maybe you should consider changing to another JVM like the IBM JVM. It does not have a Permanent Generation and is immune to this issue.

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library

'C:/PHP/5.2.13/ext\php_mcrypt1.dll'

I'd say there's some typo on your php.ini (the extra 1). Perhaps you're loading a different php.ini from what you expect (see the output of php.ini to make sure).

Other than that make sure that php_mcrypt.dll and PHP:

Were linked to the same VC runtime library (typically msvcrt.dll for VC6 or msvcrt90.dll for VC9) – use e.g. the dependency walker for this Are both debug builds or both release builds Both have ZTS enabled or ZTS disabled For libraries that depend on further libraries (DLLs), make sure they are available (e.g. in the same directory as the extension) PHP should give you meaning errors if any of the first three conditions above is not satisfied, but I wrote those anyway because I'm not sure for PHP 5.2.

Changing specific text's color using NSMutableAttributedString in Swift

What does ==$0 (double equals dollar zero) mean in Chrome Developer Tools?

I will say It 's just shorthand syntax for get reference of html element during debugging time , normaly these kind of task will perform by these method

document.getElementById , document.getElementsByClassName , document.querySelector

so clicking on an html element and getting a reference variable ($0) in console is a huge time saving during the day

How can I access "static" class variables within class methods in Python?

Define class method:

class Foo(object):
    bar = 1
    @classmethod
    def bah(cls):
        print cls.bar

Now if bah() has to be instance method (i.e. have access to self), you can still directly access the class variable.

class Foo(object):
    bar = 1
    def bah(self):
        print self.bar

Set android shape color programmatically

For anyone using C# Xamarin, here is a method based on Vikram's snippet:

private void SetDrawableColor(Drawable drawable, Android.Graphics.Color color)
{
    switch (drawable)
    {
        case ShapeDrawable sd:
            sd.Paint.Color = color;
            break;
        case GradientDrawable gd:
            gd.SetColor(color);
            break;
        case ColorDrawable cd:
            cd.Color = color;
            break;

c# dictionary one key many values

A .NET dictionary does only have a 1-to-1 relationship for keys and values. But that doesn't mean that a value can't be another array/list/dictionary.

I can't think of a reason to have a 1 to many relationship in a dictionary, but obviously there is one.

If you have different types of data that you want to store to a key, then that sounds like the ideal time to create your own class. Then you have a 1 to 1, but you have the value class storing more that 1 piece of data.

What does "TypeError 'xxx' object is not callable" means?

I came across this error message through a silly mistake. A classic example of Python giving you plenty of room to make a fool of yourself. Observe:

class DOH(object):
def __init__(self, property=None):
    self.property=property

def property():
    return property

x = DOH(1)
print(x.property())

Results

$ python3 t.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "t.py", line 9, in <module>
    print(x.property())
TypeError: 'int' object is not callable

The problem here of course is that the function is overwritten with a property.

How to make scipy.interpolate give an extrapolated result beyond the input range?

Here's an alternative method that uses only the numpy package. It takes advantage of numpy's array functions, so may be faster when interpolating/extrapolating large arrays:

import numpy as np

def extrap(x, xp, yp):
    """np.interp function with linear extrapolation"""
    y = np.interp(x, xp, yp)
    y = np.where(x<xp[0], yp[0]+(x-xp[0])*(yp[0]-yp[1])/(xp[0]-xp[1]), y)
    y = np.where(x>xp[-1], yp[-1]+(x-xp[-1])*(yp[-1]-yp[-2])/(xp[-1]-xp[-2]), y)
    return y

x = np.arange(0,10)
y = np.exp(-x/3.0)
xtest = np.array((8.5,9.5))

print np.exp(-xtest/3.0)
print np.interp(xtest, x, y)
print extrap(xtest, x, y)

Edit: Mark Mikofski's suggested modification of the "extrap" function:

def extrap(x, xp, yp):
    """np.interp function with linear extrapolation"""
    y = np.interp(x, xp, yp)
    y[x < xp[0]] = yp[0] + (x[x<xp[0]]-xp[0]) * (yp[0]-yp[1]) / (xp[0]-xp[1])
    y[x > xp[-1]]= yp[-1] + (x[x>xp[-1]]-xp[-1])*(yp[-1]-yp[-2])/(xp[-1]-xp[-2])
    return y

Encode html entities in javascript

I had the same problem and created 2 functions to create entities and translate them back to normal characters. The following methods translate any string to HTML entities and back on String prototype

/**
 * Convert a string to HTML entities
 */
String.prototype.toHtmlEntities = function() {
    return this.replace(/./gm, function(s) {
        // return "&#" + s.charCodeAt(0) + ";";
        return (s.match(/[a-z0-9\s]+/i)) ? s : "&#" + s.charCodeAt(0) + ";";
    });
};

/**
 * Create string from HTML entities
 */
String.fromHtmlEntities = function(string) {
    return (string+"").replace(/&#\d+;/gm,function(s) {
        return String.fromCharCode(s.match(/\d+/gm)[0]);
    })
};

You can then use it as following:

var str = "Test´†®¥¨©??ø…ˆƒ?÷?™ƒ?æøp£¨ ƒ™en tést".toHtmlEntities();
console.log("Entities:", str);
console.log("String:", String.fromHtmlEntities(str));

Output in console:

ITextSharp HTML to PDF?

I would one-up'd mightymada's answer if I had the reputation - I just implemented an asp.net HTML to PDF solution using Pechkin. results are wonderful.

There is a nuget package for Pechkin, but as the above poster mentions in his blog (http://codeutil.wordpress.com/2013/09/16/convert-html-to-pdf/ - I hope she doesn't mind me reposting it), there's a memory leak that's been fixed in this branch:

https://github.com/tuespetre/Pechkin

The above blog has specific instructions for how to include this package (it's a 32 bit dll and requires .net4). here is my code. The incoming HTML is actually assembled via HTML Agility pack (I'm automating invoice generations):

public static byte[] PechkinPdf(string html)
{
  //Transform the HTML into PDF
  var pechkin = Factory.Create(new GlobalConfig());
  var pdf = pechkin.Convert(new ObjectConfig()
                          .SetLoadImages(true).SetZoomFactor(1.5)
                          .SetPrintBackground(true)
                          .SetScreenMediaType(true)
                          .SetCreateExternalLinks(true), html);

  //Return the PDF file
  return pdf;
}

again, thank you mightymada - your answer is fantastic.

How can I specify a branch/tag when adding a Git submodule?

(Git 2.22, Q2 2019, has introduced git submodule set-branch --branch aBranch -- <submodule_path>)

Note that if you have an existing submodule which isn't tracking a branch yet, then (if you have git 1.8.2+):

  • Make sure the parent repo knows that its submodule now tracks a branch:

      cd /path/to/your/parent/repo
      git config -f .gitmodules submodule.<path>.branch <branch>

  • Make sure your submodule is actually at the latest of that branch:

      cd path/to/your/submodule
      git checkout -b branch --track origin/branch
        # if the master branch already exist:
        git branch -u origin/master master

         (with 'origin' being the name of the upstream remote repo the submodule has been cloned from.
         A git remote -v inside that submodule will display it. Usually, it is 'origin')

  • Don't forget to record the new state of your submodule in your parent repo:

      cd /path/to/your/parent/repo
      git add path/to/your/submodule
      git commit -m "Make submodule tracking a branch"

  • Subsequent update for that submodule will have to use the --remote option:

      # update your submodule
      # --remote will also fetch and ensure that
      # the latest commit from the branch is used
      git submodule update --remote

      # to avoid fetching use
      git submodule update --remote --no-fetch

Note that with Git 2.10+ (Q3 2016), you can use '.' as a branch name:

The name of the branch is recorded as submodule.<name>.branch in .gitmodules for update --remote.
A special value of . is used to indicate that the name of the branch in the submodule should be the same name as the current branch in the current repository.

With git checkout, if the branch name to follow is ".", it will kill your uncommitted work!
Use git switch instead.

That means Git 2.23 (August 2019) or more.

See "Confused by git checkout"

If you want to update all your submodules following a branch:

    git submodule update --recursive --remote

Note that the result, for each updated submodule, will almost always be a detached HEAD, as Dan Cameron note in his answer.

(Clintm notes in the comments that, if you run git submodule update --remote and the resulting sha1 is the same as the branch the submodule is currently on, it won't do anything and leave the submodule still "on that branch" and not in detached head state.)

To ensure the branch is actually checked out (and that won't modify the SHA1 of the special entry representing the submodule for the parent repo), he suggests:

git submodule foreach -q --recursive 'branch="$(git config -f $toplevel/.gitmodules submodule.$name.branch)"; git switch $branch'

Each submodule will still reference the same SHA1, but if you do make new commits, you will be able to push them because they will be referenced by the branch you want the submodule to track.
After that push within a submodule, don't forget to go back to the parent repo, add, commit and push the new SHA1 for those modified submodules.

Note the use of $toplevel, recommended in the comments by Alexander Pogrebnyak.
$toplevel was introduced in git1.7.2 in May 2010: commit f030c96.

it contains the absolute path of the top level directory (where .gitmodules is).

dtmland adds in the comments:

The foreach script will fail to checkout submodules that are not following a branch.
However, this command gives you both:

 git submodule foreach -q --recursive 'branch="$(git config -f $toplevel/.gitmodules submodule.$name.branch)"; [ "$branch" = "" ] && git checkout master || git switch $branch' –

The same command but easier to read:

git submodule foreach -q --recursive \
    'branch="$(git config -f $toplevel/.gitmodules submodule.$name.branch)"; \
     [ "$branch" = "" ] && \
     git checkout master || git switch $branch' –

umläute refines dtmland's command with a simplified version in the comments:

git submodule foreach -q --recursive 'git switch $(git config -f $toplevel/.gitmodules submodule.$name.branch || echo master)'

multiple lines:

git submodule foreach -q --recursive \
  'git switch \
  $(git config -f $toplevel/.gitmodules submodule.$name.branch || echo master)'

Before Git 2.26 (Q1 2020), a fetch that is told to recursively fetch updates in submodules inevitably produces reams of output, and it becomes hard to spot error messages.

The command has been taught to enumerate submodules that had errors at the end of the operation.

See commit 0222540 (16 Jan 2020) by Emily Shaffer (nasamuffin).
(Merged by Junio C Hamano -- gitster -- in commit b5c71cc, 05 Feb 2020)

fetch: emphasize failure during submodule fetch

Signed-off-by: Emily Shaffer

In cases when a submodule fetch fails when there are many submodules, the error from the lone failing submodule fetch is buried under activity on the other submodules if more than one fetch fell back on fetch-by-oid.
Call out a failure late so the user is aware that something went wrong, and where.

Because fetch_finish() is only called synchronously by run_processes_parallel, mutexing is not required around submodules_with_errors.

Note that, with Git 2.28 (Q3 2020), Rewrite of parts of the scripted "git submodule" Porcelain command continues; this time it is "git submodule set-branch" subcommand's turn.

See commit 2964d6e (02 Jun 2020) by Shourya Shukla (periperidip).

How to delete rows in tables that contain foreign keys to other tables

First, as a one-time data-scrubbing exercise, delete the orphaned rows e.g.

DELETE
  FROM ReferencingTable
 WHERE NOT EXISTS (
                   SELECT *
                     FROM MainTable AS T1
                    WHERE T1.pk_col_1 = ReferencingTable.pk_col_1
                  );

Second, as a one-time schema-alteration exercise, add the ON DELETE CASCADE referential action to the foreign key on the referencing table e.g.

ALTER TABLE ReferencingTable DROP
   CONSTRAINT fk__ReferencingTable__MainTable;

ALTER TABLE ReferencingTable ADD
   CONSTRAINT fk__ReferencingTable__MainTable
      FOREIGN KEY (pk_col_1)
      REFERENCES MainTable (pk_col_1)
      ON DELETE CASCADE;

Then, forevermore, rows in the referencing tables will automatically be deleted when their referenced row is deleted.

How to set a maximum execution time for a mysql query?

You can find the answer on this other S.O. question:

MySQL - can I limit the maximum time allowed for a query to run?

a cron job that runs every second on your database server, connecting and doing something like this:

  • SHOW PROCESSLIST
  • Find all connections with a query time larger than your maximum desired time
  • Run KILL [process id] for each of those processes

How to set MouseOver event/trigger for border in XAML?

Yes, this is confusing...

According to this blog post, it looks like this is an omission from WPF.

To make it work you need to use a style:

    <Border Name="ClearButtonBorder" Grid.Column="1" CornerRadius="0,3,3,0">
        <Border.Style>
            <Style>
                <Setter Property="Border.Background" Value="Blue"/>
                <Style.Triggers>
                    <Trigger Property="Border.IsMouseOver" Value="True">
                        <Setter Property="Border.Background" Value="Green" />
                    </Trigger>
                </Style.Triggers>
            </Style>
        </Border.Style>
        <TextBlock HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Text="X" />
    </Border>

I guess this problem isn't that common as most people tend to factor out this sort of thing into a style, so it can be used on multiple controls.

What is mod_php?

mod_php is a PHP interpreter.

From docs, one important catch of mod_php is,

How to synchronize a static variable among threads running different instances of a class in Java?

There are several ways to synchronize access to a static variable.

  1. Use a synchronized static method. This synchronizes on the class object.

    public class Test {
        private static int count = 0;

        public static synchronized void incrementCount() {
            count++;
        }
    }

  2. Explicitly synchronize on the class object.

    public class Test {
        private static int count = 0;

        public void incrementCount() {
            synchronized (Test.class) {
                count++;
            }
        }
    }

  3. Synchronize on some other static object.

    public class Test {
        private static int count = 0;
        private static final Object countLock = new Object();

        public void incrementCount() {
            synchronized (countLock) {
                count++;
            }
        }
    }

Method 3 is the best in many cases because the lock object is not exposed outside of your class.

Nexus 7 not visible over USB via "adb devices" from Windows 7 x64

When the Nexus 7 is plugged in there is a persistent notification that indicates "CONNECT AS / Media Device (MTP)". In this state adb devices will not show the Nexus, or undoubtedly any other device. Not exactly obvious, but if you select the second option "Camera (PTP)" the device is available for debugging (the lesson is ignore the camera, and focus on the protocol PTP).

This configuration is persistent, and I'm guessing that with a brand new device it will connect as MTP until told otherwise.

If my interface must return Task what is the best way to have a no-operation implementation?

To add to Reed Copsey's answer about using Task.FromResult, you can improve performance even more if you cache the already completed task since all instances of completed tasks are the same:

public static class TaskExtensions
{
    public static readonly Task CompletedTask = Task.FromResult(false);
}

With TaskExtensions.CompletedTask you can use the same instance throughout the entire app domain.

The latest version of the .Net Framework (v4.6) adds just that with the Task.CompletedTask static property

Task completedTask = Task.CompletedTask;

IOS: verify if a point is inside a rect

In Swift that would look like this:

let point = CGPointMake(20,20)
let someFrame = CGRectMake(10,10,100,100)
let isPointInFrame = CGRectContainsPoint(someFrame, point)

Swift 3 version:

let point = CGPointMake(20,20)
let someFrame = CGRectMake(10,10,100,100)
let isPointInFrame = someFrame.contains(point)

What is token-based authentication?

From Auth0.com

Token-Based Authentication, relies on a signed token that is sent to the server on each request.

What are the benefits of using a token-based approach?

  • Cross-domain / CORS: cookies + CORS don't play well across different domains. A token-based approach allows you to make AJAX calls to any server, on any domain because you use an HTTP header to transmit the user information.

  • Stateless (a.k.a. Server side scalability): there is no need to keep a session store, the token is a self-contained entity that conveys all the user information. The rest of the state lives in cookies or local storage on the client side.

  • CDN: you can serve all the assets of your app from a CDN (e.g. javascript, HTML, images, etc.), and your server side is just the API.

  • Decoupling: you are not tied to any particular authentication scheme. The token might be generated anywhere, hence your API can be called from anywhere with a single way of authenticating those calls.

  • Mobile ready: when you start working on a native platform (iOS, Android, Windows 8, etc.) cookies are not ideal when consuming a token-based approach simplifies this a lot.

  • CSRF: since you are not relying on cookies, you don't need to protect against cross site requests (e.g. it would not be possible to sib your site, generate a POST request and re-use the existing authentication cookie because there will be none).

  • Performance: we are not presenting any hard perf benchmarks here, but a network roundtrip (e.g. finding a session on database) is likely to take more time than calculating an HMACSHA256 to validate a token and parsing its contents.

HTML / CSS How to add image icon to input type="button"?

If you absolutely must use input, try this:

background-image: url(...);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-position: <left|right>;
padding-<left|right>: <width of image>px;

It's usually a little easier to use a button with an img inside:

<button type="submit"><img> Text</button>

However the browser implementations of button for submitting are inconsistent, as well as the fact that all button values are sent when button is used - which kills the "what button clicked" detection in a multi-submit form.

How to show only next line after the matched one?

In general, I agree you're asking a lot of grep here, and that another tool may be the better solution. But in an embedded environment, I may not want to have sed or awk just to do this. I found the following solution works (as long as they're not contiguous matches):

grep -A1 AT\+CSQ wvdial.out | grep -v AT\+CSQ

Basically, match them, appending 1 line of context for each match, and then pipe that through an inverse match of your original pattern to strip those out. This of course means you can assume that your pattern doesn't show up in the "next" line.

Changing minDate and maxDate on the fly using jQuery DatePicker

You have a couple of options...

1) You need to call the destroy() method not remove() so...

$('#date').datepicker('destroy');

Then call your method to recreate the datepicker object.

2) You can update the property of the existing object via

$('#date').datepicker('option', 'minDate', new Date(startDate));
$('#date').datepicker('option', 'maxDate', new Date(endDate));

or...

$('#date').datepicker('option', { minDate: new Date(startDate),
                                  maxDate: new Date(endDate) });

Creating an empty Pandas DataFrame, then filling it?

If you simply want to create an empty data frame and fill it with some incoming data frames later, try this:

newDF = pd.DataFrame() #creates a new dataframe that's empty
newDF = newDF.append(oldDF, ignore_index = True) # ignoring index is optional
# try printing some data from newDF
print newDF.head() #again optional

In this example I am using this pandas doc to create a new data frame and then using append to write to the newDF with data from oldDF.

If I have to keep appending new data into this newDF from more than one oldDFs, I just use a for loop to iterate over pandas.DataFrame.append()

How to use Bash to create a folder if it doesn't already exist?

First, in bash "[" is just a command, which expects string "]" as a last argument, so the whitespace before the closing bracket (as well as between "!" and "-d" which need to be two separate arguments too) is important:

if [ ! -d /home/mlzboy/b2c2/shared/db ]; then
  mkdir -p /home/mlzboy/b2c2/shared/db;
fi

Second, since you are using -p switch to mkdir, this check is useless, because this is what does in the first place. Just write:

mkdir -p /home/mlzboy/b2c2/shared/db;

and thats it.

Is there a simple, elegant way to define singletons?

Here's my own implementation of singletons. All you have to do is decorate the class; to get the singleton, you then have to use the Instance method. Here's an example:

@Singleton
class Foo:
   def __init__(self):
       print 'Foo created'

f = Foo() # Error, this isn't how you get the instance of a singleton

f = Foo.instance() # Good. Being explicit is in line with the Python Zen
g = Foo.instance() # Returns already created instance

print f is g # True

And here's the code:

class Singleton:
    """
    A non-thread-safe helper class to ease implementing singletons.
    This should be used as a decorator -- not a metaclass -- to the
    class that should be a singleton.

    The decorated class can define one `__init__` function that
    takes only the `self` argument. Also, the decorated class cannot be
    inherited from. Other than that, there are no restrictions that apply
    to the decorated class.

    To get the singleton instance, use the `instance` method. Trying
    to use `__call__` will result in a `TypeError` being raised.

    """

    def __init__(self, decorated):
        self._decorated = decorated

    def instance(self):
        """
        Returns the singleton instance. Upon its first call, it creates a
        new instance of the decorated class and calls its `__init__` method.
        On all subsequent calls, the already created instance is returned.

        """
        try:
            return self._instance
        except AttributeError:
            self._instance = self._decorated()
            return self._instance

    def __call__(self):
        raise TypeError('Singletons must be accessed through `instance()`.')

    def __instancecheck__(self, inst):
        return isinstance(inst, self._decorated)

iPad Multitasking support requires these orientations

I am using Xamarin and there is no available option in the UI to specify "Requires full screen". I, therefore, had to follow @Michael Wang's answer with a slight modification. Here goes:

Open the info.plist file in a text editor and add the lines:

<key>UIRequiresFullScreen</key>
<true/>

I tried setting the value to "YES" but it didn't work, which was kind of expected.

In case you are wondering, I placed the above lines below the UISupportedInterfaceOrientations section

<key>UISupportedInterfaceOrientations~ipad</key>
<array>
    <string>UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait</string>
    <string>UIInterfaceOrientationPortraitUpsideDown</string>
</array>

Hope this helps someone. Credit to Michael.

What is a callback?

Delegates do the same thing as interface-based callbacks in C++ (COM uses these), although are much simpler to use.

Note that Microsoft put delegates into its Java implementation (J++) but Sun doesn't like them [java.sun.com] so don't expect to see them in the official version of Java any time soon. I've hacked together a preprocessor to let you use them in C++, so don't feel left out if you're not programming in C# or on the .NET platform (i.e. in Managed C++ or Visual Basic.NET).

If you're used to function pointers in C, a delegate is basically a pair of pointers rolled into one:

  • A pointer to an object (optional)
  • A pointer to a method of that object

That means a single delegate passes all the information needed to locate a function in your program, whether it's a static method or associated with an object.

You define them like this in C#:

public delegate void FooCallbackType( int a, int b, int c );

When you want to use them, you make delegate out of the function you want to call:

class CMyClass
{
    public void FunctionToCall( int a, int b, int c )
    {
        // This is the callback
    }

    public void Foo()
    {
        FooCallbackType myDelegate = new FooCallbackType(
            this.FunctionToCall );
        // Now you can pass that to the function
        // that needs to call you back.
    }
}

If you want to make a delegate to point to a static method, it just looks the same:

class CMyClassWithStaticCallback
{
    public static void StaticFunctionToCall( int a, int b, int c )
    {
        // This is the callback
    }

    public static void Foo()
    {
        FooCallbackType myDelegate = new FooCallbackType(
            CMyClass.StaticFunctionToCall );
    }
}

All in all, they do the same thing as interface-based callbacks in C++, but cause a bit less trouble because you don't need to worry about naming your functions or making helper objects, and you can make delegates out of any method. They're more flexible.

How to use ConcurrentLinkedQueue?

Just use it as you would a non-concurrent collection. The Concurrent[Collection] classes wrap the regular collections so that you don't have to think about synchronizing access.

Edit: ConcurrentLinkedList isn't actually just a wrapper, but rather a better concurrent implementation. Either way, you don't have to worry about synchronization.

Difference between VARCHAR and TEXT in MySQL

There is an important detail that has been omitted in the answer above.

MySQL imposes a limit of 65,535 bytes for the max size of each row. The size of a VARCHAR column is counted towards the maximum row size, while TEXT columns are assumed to be storing their data by reference so they only need 9-12 bytes. That means even if the "theoretical" max size of your VARCHAR field is 65,535 characters you won't be able to achieve that if you have more than one column in your table.

Also note that the actual number of bytes required by a VARCHAR field is dependent on the encoding of the column (and the content). MySQL counts the maximum possible bytes used toward the max row size, so if you use a multibyte encoding like utf8mb4 (which you almost certainly should) it will use up even more of your maximum row size.

Correction: Regardless of how MySQL computes the max row size, whether or not the VARCHAR/TEXT field data is ACTUALLY stored in the row or stored by reference depends on your underlying storage engine. For InnoDB the row format affects this behavior. (Thanks Bill-Karwin)

Reasons to use TEXT:

  • If you want to store a paragraph or more of text
  • If you don't need to index the column
  • If you have reached the row size limit for your table

Reasons to use VARCHAR:

  • If you want to store a few words or a sentence
  • If you want to index the (entire) column
  • If you want to use the column with foreign-key constraints

How do I create a ListView with rounded corners in Android?

Although that did work, it took out the entire background colour as well. I was looking for a way to do just the border and just replace that XML layout code with this one and I was good to go!

<shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <stroke android:width="4dp" android:color="#FF00FF00" />
    <padding android:left="7dp" android:top="7dp"
            android:right="7dp" android:bottom="7dp" />
    <corners android:radius="4dp" />
</shape>

Mapping composite keys using EF code first

For Mapping Composite primary key using Entity framework we can use two approaches.

1) By Overriding the OnModelCreating() Method

For ex: I have the model class named VehicleFeature as shown below.

public class VehicleFeature
{
    public int VehicleId { get; set; }
    public int FeatureId{get;set;}
    public Vehicle Vehicle{get;set;}
    public Feature Feature{get;set;}
}

The Code in my DBContext would be like ,

public class VegaDbContext : DbContext
{
    public DbSet<Make> Makes{get;set;}

    public DbSet<Feature> Features{get;set;}
    public VegaDbContext(DbContextOptions<VegaDbContext> options):base(options)
    {

    }
    // we override the OnModelCreating method here.
    protected override void OnModelCreating(ModelBuilder modelBuilder)
    {
        modelBuilder.Entity<VehicleFeature>().HasKey(vf=> new {vf.VehicleId, vf.FeatureId});
    }
}

2) By Data Annotations.

public class VehicleFeature
{
    [DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.Identity)]
    [Key]
    public int VehicleId { get; set; }
    [DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.Identity)]
    [Key]
    public int FeatureId{get;set;}
    public Vehicle Vehicle{get;set;}
    public Feature Feature{get;set;}
}

Operator overloading ==, !=, Equals

In fact, this is a "how to" subject. So, here is the reference implementation:

    public class BOX
    {
        double height, length, breadth;

        public static bool operator == (BOX b1, BOX b2)
        {
            if ((object)b1 == null)
                return (object)b2 == null;

            return b1.Equals(b2);
        }

        public static bool operator != (BOX b1, BOX b2)
        {
            return !(b1 == b2);
        }

        public override bool Equals(object obj)
        {
            if (obj == null || GetType() != obj.GetType())
                return false;

            var b2 = (BOX)obj;
            return (length == b2.length && breadth == b2.breadth && height == b2.height);
        }

        public override int GetHashCode()
        {
            return height.GetHashCode() ^ length.GetHashCode() ^ breadth.GetHashCode();
        }
    }

Styling of Select2 dropdown select boxes

Thanks for the suggestions in the comments. I made a bit of a dirty hack to get what I want without having to create my own image. With javascript I first hide the default tag that's being used for the down arrow, like so:

$('b[role="presentation"]').hide();

I then included font-awesome in my page and add my own down arrow, again with a line of javascript, to replace the default one:

$('.select2-arrow').append('<i class="fa fa-angle-down"></i>');

Then with CSS I style the select boxes. I set the height, change the background color of the arrow area to a gradient black, change the width, font-size and also the color of the down arrow to white:

.select2-container .select2-choice {
    padding: 5px 10px;
    height: 40px;
    width: 132px;
    font-size: 1.2em;
}

.select2-container .select2-choice .select2-arrow {
    background-image: -khtml-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(#424242), to(#030303));
    background-image: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #424242, #030303);
    background-image: -ms-linear-gradient(top, #424242, #030303);
    background-image: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, color-stop(0%, #424242), color-stop(100%, #030303));
    background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, #424242, #030303);
    background-image: -o-linear-gradient(top, #424242, #030303);
    background-image: linear-gradient(#424242, #030303);
    width: 40px;
    color: #fff;
    font-size: 1.3em;
    padding: 4px 12px;
}

The result is the styling the way I want it:

Update 5/6/2015 As @Katie Lacy mentioned in the other answer the classnames have been changed in version 4 of Select2. The updated CSS with the new classnames should look like this:

.select2-container--default .select2-selection--single{
    padding:6px;
    height: 37px;
    width: 148px;
    font-size: 1.2em;
    position: relative;
}

.select2-container--default .select2-selection--single .select2-selection__arrow {
    background-image: -khtml-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(#424242), to(#030303));
    background-image: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #424242, #030303);
    background-image: -ms-linear-gradient(top, #424242, #030303);
    background-image: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, color-stop(0%, #424242), color-stop(100%, #030303));
    background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, #424242, #030303);
    background-image: -o-linear-gradient(top, #424242, #030303);
    background-image: linear-gradient(#424242, #030303);
    width: 40px;
    color: #fff;
    font-size: 1.3em;
    padding: 4px 12px;
    height: 27px;
    position: absolute;
    top: 0px;
    right: 0px;
    width: 20px;
}

JS:

$('b[role="presentation"]').hide();
$('.select2-selection__arrow').append('<i class="fa fa-angle-down"></i>');

How to link external javascript file onclick of button

You could simply do the following.

Let's say you have the JavaScript file named myscript.js in your root folder. Add the reference to your javascript source file in your head tag of your html file.

<script src="~/myscript.js"></script>

JS file: (myscript.js)

function awesomeClick(){
  alert('awesome click triggered');
}

HTML

<button type="button" id="jstrigger" onclick="javascript:awesomeClick();">Submit</button>

Initialize/reset struct to zero/null

Define a const static instance of the struct with the initial values and then simply assign this value to your variable whenever you want to reset it.

For example:

static const struct x EmptyStruct;

Here I am relying on static initialization to set my initial values, but you could use a struct initializer if you want different initial values.

Then, each time round the loop you can write:

myStructVariable = EmptyStruct;

How do I find out what keystore my JVM is using?

We encountered this issue on a Tomcat running from a jre directory that was (almost fully) removed after an automatic jre update, so that the running jre could no longer find jre.../lib/security/cacerts because it no longer existed.

Restarting Tomcat (after changing the configuration to run from the different jre location) fixed the problem.

Remove duplicates from a dataframe in PySpark

It is not an import problem. You simply call .dropDuplicates() on a wrong object. While class of sqlContext.createDataFrame(rdd1, ...) is pyspark.sql.dataframe.DataFrame, after you apply .collect() it is a plain Python list, and lists don't provide dropDuplicates method. What you want is something like this:

 (df1 = sqlContext
     .createDataFrame(rdd1, ['column1', 'column2', 'column3', 'column4'])
     .dropDuplicates())

 df1.collect()

Pandas groupby: How to get a union of strings

In [4]: df = read_csv(StringIO(data),sep='\s+')

In [5]: df
Out[5]:
   A         B       C
0  1  0.749065    This
1  2  0.301084      is
2  3  0.463468       a
3  4  0.643961  random
4  1  0.866521  string
5  2  0.120737       !

In [6]: df.dtypes
Out[6]:
A      int64
B    float64
C     object
dtype: object

When you apply your own function, there is not automatic exclusions of non-numeric columns. This is slower, though, than the application of .sum() to the groupby

In [8]: df.groupby('A').apply(lambda x: x.sum())
Out[8]:
   A         B           C
A
1  2  1.615586  Thisstring
2  4  0.421821         is!
3  3  0.463468           a
4  4  0.643961      random

sum by default concatenates

In [9]: df.groupby('A')['C'].apply(lambda x: x.sum())
Out[9]:
A
1    Thisstring
2           is!
3             a
4        random
dtype: object

You can do pretty much what you want

In [11]: df.groupby('A')['C'].apply(lambda x: "{%s}" % ', '.join(x))
Out[11]:
A
1    {This, string}
2           {is, !}
3               {a}
4          {random}
dtype: object

Doing this on a whole frame, one group at a time. Key is to return a Series

def f(x):
     return Series(dict(A = x['A'].sum(),
                        B = x['B'].sum(),
                        C = "{%s}" % ', '.join(x['C'])))

In [14]: df.groupby('A').apply(f)
Out[14]:
   A         B               C
A
1  2  1.615586  {This, string}
2  4  0.421821         {is, !}
3  3  0.463468             {a}
4  4  0.643961        {random}

Datatables: Cannot read property 'mData' of undefined

This can also occur if you have table arguments for things like 'aoColumns':[..] which don't match the correct number of columns. Problems like this can commonly occur when copy pasting code from other pages to quick start your datatables integration.

Example:

This won't work:

<table id="dtable">
    <thead>
        <tr>
            <th>col 1</th>
            <th>col 2</th>
        </tr>
    </thead>
    <tbody>
        <td>data 1</td>
        <td>data 2</td>
    </tbody>
</table>
<script>
        var dTable = $('#dtable');
        dTable.DataTable({
            'order': [[ 1, 'desc' ]],
            'aoColumns': [

How to set timer in android?

This is some simple code for a timer:

Timer timer = new Timer();
TimerTask t = new TimerTask() {

    }
};
timer.scheduleAtFixedRate(t,1000,1000);

how to use XPath with XDocument?

If you have XDocument it is easier to use LINQ-to-XML:

var document = XDocument.Load(fileName);
var name = document.Descendants(XName.Get("Name", @"http://demo.com/2011/demo-schema")).First().Value;

If you are sure that XPath is the only solution you need:

using System.Xml.XPath;

var document = XDocument.Load(fileName);
var namespaceManager = new XmlNamespaceManager(new NameTable());
namespaceManager.AddNamespace("empty", "http://demo.com/2011/demo-schema");
var name = document.XPathSelectElement("/empty:Report/empty:ReportInfo/empty:Name", namespaceManager).Value;

Why Doesn't C# Allow Static Methods to Implement an Interface?

Conceptually there is no reason why an interface could not define a contract that includes static methods.

For the current C# language implementation, the restriction is due to the allowance of inheritance of a base class and interfaces. If "class SomeBaseClass" implements "interface ISomeInterface" and "class SomeDerivedClass : SomeBaseClass, ISomeInterface" also implements the interface, a static method to implement an interface method would fail compile because a static method cannot have same signature as an instance method (which would be present in base class to implement the interface).

A static class is functionally identical to a singleton and serves the same purpose as a singleton with cleaner syntax. Since a singleton can implement an interface, interface implementations by statics are conceptually valid.

So it simply boils down to the limitation of C# name conflict for instance and static methods of the same name across inheritance. There is no reason why C# could not be "upgraded" to support static method contracts (interfaces).

How do I change JPanel inside a JFrame on the fly?

I was having exactly the same problem!! Increadible!! The solution I found was:

  1. Adding all the components (JPanels) to the container;
  2. Using the setVisible(false) method to all of them;
  3. On user action, setting setVisible(true) to the panel I wanted to show.
// Hiding all components (JPanels) added to a container (ex: another JPanel)
for (Component component : this.container.getComponents()) {
      component.setVisible(false);
}
// Showing only the selected JPanel, the one user wants to see
panel.setVisible(true);

No revalidate(), no validate(), no CardLayout needed.

how to get text from textview

If it is the sum of all the numbers you want, I made a little snippet for you that can handle both + and - using a regex (I left some print-calls in there to help visualise what happens):

    final String string = "  " + 5 + "\n" + "-" + " " + 9+"\n"+"+"+" "+5; //Or get the value from a TextView
    final Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile("(-?).?(\\d+)");
    Matcher matcher = pattern.matcher(string);

    System.out.print(string);
    System.out.print('\n');
    int sum = 0;

    while( matcher.find() ){
        System.out.print(matcher.group(1));
        System.out.print(matcher.group(2));
        System.out.print('\n');
        sum += Integer.parseInt(matcher.group(1)+matcher.group(2));
    }
    System.out.print("\nSum: "+sum);

This code prints the following:

  5
- 9
+ 5
5
-9
5

Sum: 1

Edit: sorry if I misunderstood your question, it was a little bit unclear what you wanted to do. I assumed you wanted to get the sum of the numbers as an integer rather than a string.

Edit2: to get the numbers separate from each other, do something like this instead:

    final String string = "  " + 5 + "\n" + "-" + " " + 9+"\n"+"+"+" "+5; //Or get the value from a TextView
    final Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile("(-?).?(\\d+)");
    Matcher matcher = pattern.matcher(string);
    ArrayList<Integer> numbers = new ArrayList<Integer>();

    while( matcher.find() ){
        numbers.add(Integer.parseInt(matcher.group(1)+matcher.group(2)));
    }

Android "elevation" not showing a shadow

IIS7 Permissions Overview - ApplicationPoolIdentity

On Windows Server 2008(r2) you can't assign an application pool identity to a folder through Properties->Security. You can do it through an admin command prompt using the following though:

icacls "c:\yourdirectory" /t /grant "IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool":(R)

jQuery check if it is clicked or not

You could use .data():

$("#element").click(function(){
    $(this).data('clicked', true);
});

and then check it with:

if($('#element').data('clicked')) {
    alert('yes');
}

To get a better answer you need to provide more information.

Update:

Based on your comment, I understand you want something like:

$("#element").click(function(){
    var $this = $(this);
    if($this.data('clicked')) {
        func(some, other, parameters);
    }
    else {
        $this.data('clicked', true);
        func(some, parameter);
    }
});

How to turn on WCF tracing?

The following configuration taken from MSDN can be applied to enable tracing on your WCF service.

<configuration>
  <system.diagnostics>
    <sources>
      <source name="System.ServiceModel"
              switchValue="Information, ActivityTracing"
              propagateActivity="true" >
        <listeners>
             <add name="xml"/>
        </listeners>
      </source>
      <source name="System.ServiceModel.MessageLogging">
        <listeners>
            <add name="xml"/>
        </listeners>
      </source>
      <source name="myUserTraceSource"
              switchValue="Information, ActivityTracing">
        <listeners>
            <add name="xml"/>
        </listeners>
      </source>
    </sources>
    <sharedListeners>
        <add name="xml"
             type="System.Diagnostics.XmlWriterTraceListener"
             initializeData="Error.svclog" />
    </sharedListeners>
  </system.diagnostics>
</configuration>

To view the log file, you can use "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\SvcTraceViewer.exe".

If "SvcTraceViewer.exe" is not on your system, you can download it from the "Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 4" package here:

Windows SDK Download

You don't have to install the entire thing, just the ".NET Development / Tools" part.

When/if it bombs out during installation with a non-sensical error, Petopas' answer to Windows 7 SDK Installation Failure solved my issue.

Map to String in Java

Use Object#toString().

String string = map.toString();

That's after all also what System.out.println(object) does under the hoods. The format for maps is described in AbstractMap#toString().

Returns a string representation of this map. The string representation consists of a list of key-value mappings in the order returned by the map's entrySet view's iterator, enclosed in braces ("{}"). Adjacent mappings are separated by the characters ", " (comma and space). Each key-value mapping is rendered as the key followed by an equals sign ("=") followed by the associated value. Keys and values are converted to strings as by String.valueOf(Object).

How to validate an email address in PHP

In my experience, regex solutions have too many false positives and filter_var() solutions have false negatives (especially with all of the newer TLDs).

Instead, it's better to make sure the address has all of the required parts of an email address (user, "@" symbol, and domain), then verify that the domain itself exists.

There is no way to determine (server side) if an email user exists for an external domain.

This is a method I created in a Utility class:

public static function validateEmail($email)
{
    // SET INITIAL RETURN VARIABLES

        $emailIsValid = FALSE;

    // MAKE SURE AN EMPTY STRING WASN'T PASSED

        if (!empty($email))
        {
            // GET EMAIL PARTS

                $domain = ltrim(stristr($email, '@'), '@') . '.';
                $user   = stristr($email, '@', TRUE);

            // VALIDATE EMAIL ADDRESS

                if
                (
                    !empty($user) &&
                    !empty($domain) &&
                    checkdnsrr($domain)
                )
                {$emailIsValid = TRUE;}
        }

    // RETURN RESULT

        return $emailIsValid;
}

What's the C# equivalent to the With statement in VB?

The closest thing in C# 3.0, is that you can use a constructor to initialize properties:

Stuff.Elements.Foo foo = new Stuff.Elements.Foo() {Name = "Bob Dylan", Age = 68, Location = "On Tour", IsCool = true}

add allow_url_fopen to my php.ini using .htaccess

If your host is using suPHP, you can try creating a php.ini file in the same folder as the script and adding:

allow_url_fopen = On

(you can determine this by creating a file and checking which user it was created under: if you, it's suPHP, if "apache/nobody" or not you, then it's a normal PHP mode. You can also make a script

<?php
echo `id`;
?>

To give the same information, assuming shell_exec is not a disabled function)

Creating a blocking Queue<T> in .NET?

You can use the BlockingCollection and ConcurrentQueue in the System.Collections.Concurrent Namespace

 public class ProducerConsumerQueue<T> : BlockingCollection<T>
{
    /// <summary>
    /// Initializes a new instance of the ProducerConsumerQueue, Use Add and TryAdd for Enqueue and TryEnqueue and Take and TryTake for Dequeue and TryDequeue functionality
    /// </summary>
    public ProducerConsumerQueue()
        : base(new ConcurrentQueue<T>())
    {
    }

  /// <summary>
  /// Initializes a new instance of the ProducerConsumerQueue, Use Add and TryAdd for Enqueue and TryEnqueue and Take and TryTake for Dequeue and TryDequeue functionality
  /// </summary>
  /// <param name="maxSize"></param>
    public ProducerConsumerQueue(int maxSize)
        : base(new ConcurrentQueue<T>(), maxSize)
    {
    }

}

Counting the occurrences / frequency of array elements

I think this is the simplest way how to count occurrences with same value in array.

var a = [true, false, false, false];
a.filter(function(value){
    return value === false;
}).length

Use URI builder in Android or create URL with variables

Using appendEncodePath() could save you multiple lines than appendPath(), the following code snippet builds up this url: http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/forecast/daily?zip=94043

Uri.Builder urlBuilder = new Uri.Builder();
urlBuilder.scheme("http");
urlBuilder.authority("api.openweathermap.org");
urlBuilder.appendEncodedPath("data/2.5/forecast/daily");
urlBuilder.appendQueryParameter("zip", "94043,us");
URL url = new URL(urlBuilder.build().toString());

Get JSON data from external URL and display it in a div as plain text

Here is one without using JQuery with pure JavaScript. I used javascript promises and XMLHttpRequest You can try it here on this fiddle

HTML

<div id="result" style="color:red"></div>

JavaScript

var getJSON = function(url) {
  return new Promise(function(resolve, reject) {
    var xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();
    xhr.open('get', url, true);
    xhr.responseType = 'json';
    xhr.onload = function() {
      var status = xhr.status;
      if (status == 200) {
        resolve(xhr.response);
      } else {
        reject(status);
      }
    };
    xhr.send();
  });
};

getJSON('https://www.googleapis.com/freebase/v1/text/en/bob_dylan').then(function(data) {
    alert('Your Json result is: ' + data.result); //you can comment this, i used it to debug

    result.innerText = data.result; //display the result in an HTML element
}, function(status) { //error detection....
  alert('Something went wrong.');
});

Row count with PDO

You can combine the best method into one line or function, and have the new query auto-generated for you:

function getRowCount($q){
    global $db;
    return $db->query(preg_replace('/SELECT [A-Za-z,]+ FROM /i','SELECT count(*) FROM ',$q))->fetchColumn();
}

$numRows = getRowCount($query);

Use of "instanceof" in Java

instanceof can be used to determine the actual type of an object:

class A { }
class C extends A { }
class D extends A { }

public static void testInstance(){
    A c = new C();
    A d = new D();
    Assert.assertTrue(c instanceof A && d instanceof A);
    Assert.assertTrue(c instanceof C && d instanceof D);
    Assert.assertFalse(c instanceof D);
    Assert.assertFalse(d instanceof C);
}

How to check if a column exists in a datatable

It is much more accurate to use IndexOf:

If dt.Columns.IndexOf("ColumnName") = -1 Then
    'Column not exist
End If

If the Contains is used it would not differentiate between ColumName and ColumnName2.

Passing on command line arguments to runnable JAR

Why not ?

Just modify your Main-Class to receive arguments and act upon the argument.

public class wiki2txt {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

          String fileName = args[0];

          // Use FileInputStream, BufferedReader etc here.

    }
}

Specify the full path in the commandline.

java -jar wiki2txt /home/bla/enwiki-....xml

Why shouldn't I use mysql_* functions in PHP?

It's possible to define almost all mysql_* functions using mysqli or PDO. Just include them on top of your old PHP application, and it will work on PHP7. My solution here.

<?php

PHP : send mail in localhost

You will need to install a local mailserver in order to do this. If you want to send it to external e-mail addresses, it might end up in unwanted e-mails or it may not arrive at all.

A good mailserver which I use (I use it on Linux, but it's also available for Windows) is Axigen: http://www.axigen.com/mail-server/download/

You might need some experience with mailservers to install it, but once it works, you can do anything you want with it.

http://www.scipy.org/Tentative_NumPy_Tutorial#head-6a1bc005bd80e1b19f812e1e64e0d25d50f99fe2

NumPy's main object is the homogeneous multidimensional array. In Numpy dimensions are called axes. The number of axes is rank. Numpy's array class is called ndarray. It is also known by the alias array. The more important attributes of an ndarray object are:

ndarray.ndim
the number of axes (dimensions) of the array. In the Python world, the number of dimensions is referred to as rank.

ndarray.shape
the dimensions of the array. This is a tuple of integers indicating the size of the array in each dimension. For a matrix with n rows and m columns, shape will be (n,m). The length of the shape tuple is therefore the rank, or number of dimensions, ndim.

ndarray.size
the total number of elements of the array. This is equal to the product of the elements of shape.

HAProxy redirecting http to https (ssl)

I found this to be the biggest help:

Use HAProxy 1.5 or newer, and simply add the following line to the frontend config:

redirect scheme https code 301 if !{ ssl_fc }

Google Chrome default opening position and size

You should just grab the window by the title bar and snap it to the left side of your screen (close browser) then reopen the browser ans snap it to the top... problem is over.

How to get date in BAT file

Locale-independent one liner to get any date format you like. I use it to generate archive names. Back quote option is needed because PowerShell command line is using single quotes.

:: Get date in yyyyMMdd_HHmm format to use with file name.
FOR /f "usebackq" %%i IN (`PowerShell ^(Get-Date^).ToString^('yyyy-MM-dd'^)`) DO SET DTime=%%i

:: Get formatted yesterday date.
FOR /f "usebackq" %%i IN (`PowerShell ^(Get-Date^).AddDays^(-1^).ToString^('yyyy-MM-dd'^)`) DO SET DTime=%%i

:: Show file name with the date.
echo Archive.%DTime%.zip

Joda DateTime to Timestamp conversion

//This Works just fine
DateTime dt = new DateTime();
Log.d("ts",String.valueOf(dt.now()));
dt=dt.plusYears(3);
dt=dt.minusDays(7);
Log.d("JODA DateTime",String.valueOf(dt));
Timestamp ts= new Timestamp(dt.getMillis());
Log.d("Coverted to java.sql.Timestamp",String.valueOf(ts));

Cordova : Requirements check failed for JDK 1.8 or greater

I faced the same issue with jdk1.8.0_201.It got resolved when I made JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_201 and added "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_201\bin" in path variable

MyISAM versus InnoDB

Also check out some drop-in replacements for MySQL itself:

MariaDB

http://mariadb.org/

MariaDB is a database server that offers drop-in replacement functionality for MySQL. MariaDB is built by some of the original authors of MySQL, with assistance from the broader community of Free and open source software developers. In addition to the core functionality of MySQL, MariaDB offers a rich set of feature enhancements including alternate storage engines, server optimizations, and patches.

Percona Server

https://launchpad.net/percona-server

An enhanced drop-in replacement for MySQL, with better performance, improved diagnostics, and added features.

Common HTTPclient and proxy

Here is how I solved this problem for the old (< 4.3) HttpClient (which I cannot upgrade), using the answer of Santosh Singh (who I gave a +1):

HttpClient httpclient = new HttpClient();
if (System.getProperty("http.proxyHost") != null) {
  try {
    HostConfiguration hostConfiguration = httpclient.getHostConfiguration();
    hostConfiguration.setProxy(System.getProperty("http.proxyHost"), Integer.parseInt(System.getProperty("http.proxyPort")));
    httpclient.setHostConfiguration(hostConfiguration);
    this.getLogger().warn("USING PROXY: "+httpclient.getHostConfiguration().getProxyHost());
  } catch (Exception e) {
    throw new ProcessingException("Cannot set proxy!", e);
  }
}

How can I set the request header for curl?

To pass multiple headers in a curl request you simply add additional -H or --header to your curl command.

Example

//Simplified
$ curl -v -H 'header1:val' -H 'header2:val' URL

//Explanatory
$ curl -v -H 'Connection: keep-alive' -H 'Content-Type: application/json'  https://www.example.com

Going Further

For standard HTTP header fields such as User-Agent, Cookie, Host, there is actually another way to setting them. The curl command offers designated options for setting these header fields:

  • -A (or --user-agent): set "User-Agent" field.
  • -b (or --cookie): set "Cookie" field.
  • -e (or --referer): set "Referer" field.
  • -H (or --header): set "Header" field

For example, the following two commands are equivalent. Both of them change "User-Agent" string in the HTTP header.

    $ curl -v -H "Content-Type: application/json" -H "User-Agent: UserAgentString" https://www.example.com
    $ curl -v -H "Content-Type: application/json" -A "UserAgentString" https://www.example.com

Getting current device language in iOS?

i use this

Altering a column: null to not null

First, make all current NULL values disappear:

UPDATE [Table] SET [Column]=0 WHERE [Column] IS NULL

Then, update the table definition to disallow "NULLs":

ALTER TABLE [Table] ALTER COLUMN [Column] INTEGER NOT NULL

Illegal mix of collations (utf8_unicode_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation '='

Answer is adding to @Sebas' answer - setting the collation of my local environment. Do not try this on production.

ALTER DATABASE databasename CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci;

ALTER TABLE tablename CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci;

Best way to copy from one array to another

There are lots of solutions:

b = Arrays.copyOf(a, a.length);

Which allocates a new array, copies over the elements of a, and returns the new array.

Or

b = new int[a.length];
System.arraycopy(a, 0, b, 0, b.length);

Which copies the source array content into a destination array that you allocate yourself.

Or

b = a.clone();

which works very much like Arrays.copyOf(). See this thread.

Or the one you posted, if you reverse the direction of the assignment in the loop:

b[i] = a[i]; // NOT a[i] = b[i];

Using a dictionary to count the items in a list

I like:

counts = dict()
for i in items:
  counts[i] = counts.get(i, 0) + 1

.get allows you to specify a default value if the key does not exist.

"java.lang.OutOfMemoryError : unable to create new native Thread"

your JBoss configuration has some issues, /opt/jrockit-jdk1.6/bin/java -Xms512m -Xmx512m Xms and Xmx are limiting your JBoss memory usage, to the configured value, so from the 8Gb you have the server is only ussing 512M + some extra for his own purpose, increase that number, remember to leave some free for the OS and other stuff running there and may be you get it running despite de unsavoury code. Fixing the code would be nice too, if you can.

make div's height expand with its content

Try this: overflow: auto;

It worked for my problem..

How to sleep the thread in node.js without affecting other threads?

When working with async functions or observables provided by 3rd party libraries, for example Cloud firestore, I've found functions the waitFor method shown below (TypeScript, but you get the idea...) to be helpful when you need to wait on some process to complete, but you don't want to have to embed callbacks within callbacks within callbacks nor risk an infinite loop.

This method is sort of similar to a while (!condition) sleep loop, but yields asynchronously and performs a test on the completion condition at regular intervals till true or timeout.

export const sleep = (ms: number) => {
    return new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, ms))
}
/**
 * Wait until the condition tested in a function returns true, or until
 * a timeout is exceeded.
 * @param interval The frenequency with which the boolean function contained in condition is called.
 * @param timeout The maximum time to allow for booleanFunction to return true
 * @param booleanFunction: A completion function to evaluate after each interval. waitFor will return true as soon as the completion function returns true.
 */
export const waitFor = async function (interval: number, timeout: number,
    booleanFunction: Function): Promise<boolean> {
    let elapsed = 1;
    if (booleanFunction()) return true;
    while (elapsed < timeout) {
        elapsed += interval;
        await sleep(interval);
        if (booleanFunction()) {
            return true;
        }
    }
    return false;
}

The say you have a long running process on your backend you want to complete before some other task is undertaken. For example if you have a function that totals a list of accounts, but you want to refresh the accounts from the backend before you calculate, you can do something like this:

async recalcAccountTotals() : number {
     this.accountService.refresh();   //start the async process.
     if (this.accounts.dirty) {
           let updateResult = await waitFor(100,2000,()=> {return !(this.accounts.dirty)})
     }
 if(!updateResult) {
      console.error("Account refresh timed out, recalc aborted");
      return NaN;
    }
 return ... //calculate the account total.
}

Linux command to check if a shell script is running or not

Check this

ps -ef | grep shellscripname.sh

You can also find your running process in

ps -ef

ORA-00984: column not allowed here

Replace double quotes with single ones:

INSERT
INTO    MY.LOGFILE
        (id,severity,category,logdate,appendername,message,extrainfo)
VALUES  (
       'dee205e29ec34',
       'FATAL',
       'facade.uploader.model',
       '2013-06-11 17:16:31',
       'LOGDB',
       NULL,
       NULL
       )

In SQL, double quotes are used to mark identifiers, not string constants.

Default value in Doctrine

You can do it using xml as well:

<field name="acmeOne" type="string" column="acmeOne" length="36">
    <options>
        <option name="comment">Your SQL field comment goes here.</option>
        <option name="default">Default Value</option>
    </options>
</field>

Create a GUID in Java

ALTERNATE GENERATOR

You can also use the uuid-creator library. See these examples:

// Create a random-based UUID
UUID uuid = UuidCreator.getRandomBased();
// Create a name based UUID (SHA1)
String name = "JUST_A_TEST_STRING";
UUID uuid = UuidCreator.getNameBasedSha1(name);

Alternating Row Colors in Bootstrap 3 - No Table

There isn't really a way to do this without the css getting a little convoluted, but here's the cleanest solution I could put together (the breakpoints in this are just for example purposes, change them to whatever breakpoints you're actually using.) The key is :nth-of-type (or :nth-child -- either would work in this case.)

Smallest viewport:

@media (max-width:$smallest-breakpoint) {

  .row div {
     background: #eee;
   }

  .row div:nth-of-type(2n) {
     background: #fff;
   }

}

Medium viewport:

@media (min-width:$smallest-breakpoint) and (max-width:$mid-breakpoint) {

  .row div {
    background: #eee;
  }

  .row div:nth-of-type(4n+1), .row div:nth-of-type(4n+2) {
    background: #fff;
  }

}

Largest viewport:

@media (min-width:$mid-breakpoint) and (max-width:9999px) {

  .row div {
    background: #eee;
  }

  .row div:nth-of-type(6n+4),
  .row div:nth-of-type(6n+5),
  .row div:nth-of-type(6n+6) {
      background: #fff;
  }
}

What is the most efficient/quickest way to loop through rows in VBA (excel)?

For Each is much faster than for I=1 to X, for some reason. Just try to go through the same dictionary,

Convert RGB to Black & White in OpenCV

A simple way of "binarize" an image is to compare to a threshold: For example you can compare all elements in a matrix against a value with opencv in c++

cv::Mat img = cv::imread("image.jpg", CV_LOAD_IMAGE_GRAYSCALE);
cv::Mat bw = img > 128;

In this way, all pixels in the matrix greater than 128 now are white, and these less than 128 or equals will be black

Optionally, and for me gave good results is to apply blur

cv::blur( bw, bw, cv::Size(3,3) );

Later you can save it as said before with:

cv::imwrite("image_bw.jpg", bw);

How to exclude particular class name in CSS selector?

Method 1

The problem with your code is that you are selecting the .remode_hover that is a descendant of .remode_selected. So the first part of getting your code to work correctly is by removing that space

.reMode_selected.reMode_hover:hover

Then, in order to get the style to not work, you have to override the style set by the :hover. In other words, you need to counter the background-color property. So the final code will be

.reMode_selected.reMode_hover:hover {
  background-color:inherit;
}
.reMode_hover:hover {
  background-color: #f0ac00;
}

Fiddle

Method 2

An alternative method would be to use :not(), as stated by others. This will return any element that doesn't have the class or property stated inside the parenthesis. In this case, you would put .remode_selected in there. This will target all elements that don't have a class of .remode_selected

Fiddle

However, I would not recommend this method, because of the fact that it was introduced in CSS3, so browser support is not ideal.

Method 3

A third method would be to use jQuery. You can target the .not() selector, which would be similar to using :not() in CSS, but with much better browser support

Fiddle

Oracle select most recent date record

i think i'd try with MAX something like this:

SELECT staff_id, max( date ) from owner.table group by staff_id

then link in your other columns:

select staff_id, site_id, pay_level, latest
from owner.table,
(   SELECT staff_id, max( date ) latest from owner.table group by staff_id ) m
where m.staff_id = staff_id
and m.latest = date

Create a tag in a GitHub repository

In case you want to tag a specific commit like i do

Here's a command to do that :-

Example:

git tag -a v1.0 7cceb02 -m "Your message here"

Where 7cceb02 is the beginning part of the commit id.

You can then push the tag using git push origin v1.0.

You can do git log to show all the commit id's in your current branch.

Automatic date update in a cell when another cell's value changes (as calculated by a formula)

You could fill the dependend cell (D2) by a User Defined Function (VBA Macro Function) that takes the value of the C2-Cell as input parameter, returning the current date as ouput.

Having C2 as input parameter for the UDF in D2 tells Excel that it needs to reevaluate D2 everytime C2 changes (that is if auto-calculation of formulas is turned on for the workbook).

EDIT:

Here is some code:

For the UDF:

    Public Function UDF_Date(ByVal data) As Date

        UDF_Date = Now()

    End Function

As Formula in D2:

=UDF_Date(C2)

You will have to give the D2-Cell a Date-Time Format, or it will show a numeric representation of the date-value.

And you can expand the formula over the desired range by draging it if you keep the C2 reference in the D2-formula relative.

Note: This still might not be the ideal solution because every time Excel recalculates the workbook the date in D2 will be reset to the current value. To make D2 only reflect the last time C2 was changed there would have to be some kind of tracking of the past value(s) of C2. This could for example be implemented in the UDF by providing also the address alonside the value of the input parameter, storing the input parameters in a hidden sheet, and comparing them with the previous values everytime the UDF gets called.

Addendum:

Here is a sample implementation of an UDF that tracks the changes of the cell values and returns the date-time when the last changes was detected. When using it, please be aware that:

  • The usage of the UDF is the same as described above.

  • The UDF works only for single cell input ranges.

  • The cell values are tracked by storing the last value of cell and the date-time when the change was detected in the document properties of the workbook. If the formula is used over large datasets the size of the file might increase considerably as for every cell that is tracked by the formula the storage requirements increase (last value of cell + date of last change.) Also, maybe Excel is not capable of handling very large amounts of document properties and the code might brake at a certain point.

  • If the name of a worksheet is changed all the tracking information of the therein contained cells is lost.

  • The code might brake for cell-values for which conversion to string is non-deterministic.

  • The code below is not tested and should be regarded only as proof of concept. Use it at your own risk.

    Public Function UDF_Date(ByVal inData As Range) As Date

        Dim wb As Workbook
        Dim dProps As DocumentProperties
        Dim pValue As DocumentProperty
        Dim pDate As DocumentProperty
        Dim sName As String
        Dim sNameDate As String

        Dim bDate As Boolean
        Dim bValue As Boolean
        Dim bChanged As Boolean

        bDate = True
        bValue = True

        bChanged = False

        Dim sVal As String
        Dim dDate As Date

        sName = inData.Address & "_" & inData.Worksheet.Name
        sNameDate = sName & "_dat"

        sVal = CStr(inData.Value)
        dDate = Now()

        Set wb = inData.Worksheet.Parent

        Set dProps = wb.CustomDocumentProperties

    On Error Resume Next

        Set pValue = dProps.Item(sName)

        If Err.Number <> 0 Then
            bValue = False
            Err.Clear
        End If

    On Error GoTo 0

        If Not bValue Then
            bChanged = True
            Set pValue = dProps.Add(sName, False, msoPropertyTypeString, sVal)
        Else
            bChanged = pValue.Value <> sVal
            If bChanged Then
                pValue.Value = sVal
            End If
        End If

    On Error Resume Next

        Set pDate = dProps.Item(sNameDate)

        If Err.Number <> 0 Then
            bDate = False
            Err.Clear
        End If

    On Error GoTo 0

        If Not bDate Then
            Set pDate = dProps.Add(sNameDate, False, msoPropertyTypeDate, dDate)
        End If

        If bChanged Then
            pDate.Value = dDate
        Else
            dDate = pDate.Value
        End If

        UDF_Date = dDate
     End Function

Make the insertion of the date conditional upon the range.

This has an advantage of not changing the dates unless the content of the cell is changed, and it is in the range C2:C2, even if the sheet is closed and saved, it doesn't recalculate unless the adjacent cell changes.

What is PAGEIOLATCH_SH wait type in SQL Server?

PAGEIOLATCH_SH wait type usually comes up as the result of fragmented or unoptimized index.

Often reasons for excessive PAGEIOLATCH_SH wait type are:

  • I/O subsystem has a problem or is misconfigured
  • Overloaded I/O subsystem by other processes that are producing the high I/O activity
  • Bad index management
  • Logical or physical drive misconception
  • Network issues/latency
  • Memory pressure
  • Synchronous Mirroring and AlwaysOn AG

In order to try and resolve having high PAGEIOLATCH_SH wait type, you can check:

  • SQL Server, queries and indexes, as very often this could be found as a root cause of the excessive PAGEIOLATCH_SH wait types
  • For memory pressure before jumping into any I/O subsystem troubleshooting

Always keep in mind that in case of high safety Mirroring or synchronous-commit availability in AlwaysOn AG, increased/excessive PAGEIOLATCH_SH can be expected.

You can find more details about this topic in the article Handling excessive SQL Server PAGEIOLATCH_SH wait types

Check if AJAX response data is empty/blank/null/undefined/0

//if(data="undefined"){

This is an assignment statement, not a comparison. Also, "undefined" is a string, it's a property. Checking it is like this: if (data === undefined) (no quotes, otherwise it's a string value)

If it's not defined, you may be returning an empty string. You could try checking for a falsy value like if (!data) as well

Count number of occurrences by month

Use a pivot table. You can manually refresh a pivot table's data source by right-clicking on it and clicking refresh. Otherwise you can set up a worksheet_change macro - or just a refresh button. Pivot Table tutorial is here: http://chandoo.org/wp/2009/08/19/excel-pivot-tables-tutorial/

1) Create a Month column from your Date column (e.g. =TEXT(B2,"MMM") )

image1

2) Create a Year column from your Date column (e.g. =TEXT(B2,"YYYY") )

image2

3) Add a Count column, with "1" for each value

image3

4) Create a Pivot table with the fields, Count, Month and Year 5) Drag the Year and Month fields into Row Labels. Ensure that Year is above month so your Pivot table first groups by year, then by month 6) Drag the Count field into Values to create a Count of Count

There are better tutorials I'm sure just google/bing "pivot table tutorial".

What throws an IOException in Java?

Java documentation is helpful to know the root cause of a particular IOException.

Just have a look at the direct known sub-interfaces of IOException from the documentation page:

ChangedCharSetException, CharacterCodingException, CharConversionException, ClosedChannelException, EOFException, FileLockInterruptionException, FileNotFoundException, FilerException, FileSystemException, HttpRetryException, IIOException, InterruptedByTimeoutException, InterruptedIOException, InvalidPropertiesFormatException, JMXProviderException, JMXServerErrorException, MalformedURLException, ObjectStreamException, ProtocolException, RemoteException, SaslException, SocketException, SSLException, SyncFailedException, UnknownHostException, UnknownServiceException, UnsupportedDataTypeException, UnsupportedEncodingException, UserPrincipalNotFoundException, UTFDataFormatException, ZipException

Most of these exceptions are self-explanatory.

A few IOExceptions with root causes:

EOFException: Signals that an end of file or end of stream has been reached unexpectedly during input. This exception is mainly used by data input streams to signal the end of the stream.

SocketException: Thrown to indicate that there is an error creating or accessing a Socket.

RemoteException: A RemoteException is the common superclass for a number of communication-related exceptions that may occur during the execution of a remote method call. Each method of a remote interface, an interface that extends java.rmi.Remote, must list RemoteException in its throws clause.

UnknownHostException: Thrown to indicate that the IP address of a host could not be determined (you may not be connected to Internet).

MalformedURLException: Thrown to indicate that a malformed URL has occurred. Either no legal protocol could be found in a specification string or the string could not be parsed.

Best practice for storing and protecting private API keys in applications

Based on bitter experience, and after consulting with an IDA-Pro expert the best solution is to move a key part of the code into a DLL/SharedObject, then fetch it from a server and load at runtime.

Sensitive data must be encoded as it's very easy to do something like this:

$ strings libsecretlib.so | grep My
  My_S3cr3t_P@$$W0rD

How to maintain aspect ratio using HTML IMG tag

Set width and height of the images to auto, but limit both max-width and max-height:

img {
    max-width:64px;
    max-height:64px;
    width:auto;
    height:auto;
}

Fiddle

If you want to display images of arbitrary size in the 64x64px "frames", you can use inline-block wrappers and positioning for them, like in this fiddle.

jQuery - How to dynamically add a validation rule

You need to call .validate() before you can add rules this way, like this:

$("#myForm").validate(); //sets up the validator
$("input[id*=Hours]").rules("add", "required");

The .validate() documentation is a good guide, here's the blurb about .rules("add", option):

Adds the specified rules and returns all rules for the first matched element. Requires that the parent form is validated, that is, $("form").validate() is called first.

Converting stream of int's to char's in java

It depends on what you mean by "convert an int to char".

If you simply want to cast the value in the int, you can cast it using Java's typecast notation:

int i = 97; // 97 is 'a' in ASCII
char c = (char) i; // c is now 'a'

If you mean transforming the integer 1 into the character '1', you can do it like this:

if (i >= 0 && i <= 9) {
char c = Character.forDigit(i, 10);
....
}

How to temporarily disable a click handler in jQuery?

$("#button_id").click(function() {
    $('#button_id').attr('disabled', 'true');
    $('#myDiv').hide(function() { $('#button_id').removeAttr('disabled'); });

Don't use .attr() to do the disabled, use .prop(), it's better.

Is there an API to get bank transaction and bank balance?

I use GNU Cash and it uses Open Financial Exchange (ofx) http://www.ofx.net/ to download complete transactions and balances from each account of each bank.

Let me emphasize that again, you get a huge list of transactions with OFX into the GNU Cash. Depending on the account type these transactions can be very detailed description of your transactions (purchases+paycheques), investments, interests, etc.

In my case, even though I have Chase debit card I had to choose Chase Credit to make it work. But Chase wants you to enable this OFX feature by logging into your online banking and enable Quicken/MS Money/etc. somewhere in your profile or preferences. Don't call Chase customer support because they know nothing about it.

This service for OFX and GNU Cash is free. I have heard that they charge $10 a month for other platforms.

OFX can download transactions from 348 banks so far. http://www.ofxhome.com/index.php/home/directory

Actualy, OFX also supports making bill payments, stop a check, intrabank and interbank transfers etc. It is quite extensive. See it here: http://ofx.net/AboutOFX/ServicesSupported.aspx

Take a look at Count(*) vs Count(1) which may be the issue you were described.

Play a Sound with Python

Definitely use Pyglet for this. It's kind of a large package, but it is pure python with no extension modules. That will definitely be the easiest for deployment. It's also got great format and codec support.

import pyglet

music = pyglet.resource.media('music.mp3')
music.play()

pyglet.app.run()

How to get access to HTTP header information in Spring MVC REST controller?

You can use HttpEntity to read both Body and Headers.

   @RequestMapping(value = "/restURL")
   public String serveRest(HttpEntity<String> httpEntity){
                MultiValueMap<String, String> headers =
                httpEntity.getHeaders();
                Iterator<Map.Entry<String, List<String>>> s =
                headers.entrySet().iterator();
                while(s.hasNext()) {
                    Map.Entry<String, List<String>> obj = s.next();
                    String key = obj.getKey();
                    List<String> value = obj.getValue();
                }

                String body = httpEntity.getBody();

How do I refresh a DIV content?

You can use jQuery to achieve this using simple $.get method. .html work like innerHtml and replace the content of your div.

$.get("/YourUrl", {},
      function (returnedHtml) {
      $("#here").html(returnedHtml);
});

And call this using javascript setInterval method.

How to specify preference of library path?

If one is used to work with DLL in Windows and would like to skip .so version numbers in linux/QT, adding CONFIG += plugin will take version numbers out. To use absolute path to .so, giving it to linker works fine, as Mr. Klatchko mentioned.

How to make Java honor the DNS Caching Timeout?

To expand on Byron's answer, I believe you need to edit the file java.security in the %JRE_HOME%\lib\security directory to effect this change.

Here is the relevant section:

#
# The Java-level namelookup cache policy for successful lookups:
#
# any negative value: caching forever
# any positive value: the number of seconds to cache an address for
# zero: do not cache
#
# default value is forever (FOREVER). For security reasons, this
# caching is made forever when a security manager is set. When a security
# manager is not set, the default behavior is to cache for 30 seconds.
#
# NOTE: setting this to anything other than the default value can have
# serious security implications. Do not set it unless
# you are sure you are not exposed to DNS spoofing attack.
#
#networkaddress.cache.ttl=-1

JAX-RS / Jersey how to customize error handling?

I too like StaxMan would probably implement that QueryParam as a String, then handle the conversion, rethrowing as necessary.

If the locale specific behavior is the desired and expected behavior, you would use the following to return the 400 BAD REQUEST error:

throw new WebApplicationException(Response.Status.BAD_REQUEST);

See the JavaDoc for javax.ws.rs.core.Response.Status for more options.

"Too many values to unpack" Exception

This problem looked familiar so I thought I'd see if I could replicate from the limited amount of information.

A quick search turned up an entry in James Bennett's blog here which mentions that when working with the UserProfile to extend the User model a common mistake in settings.py can cause Django to throw this error.

To quote the blog entry:

The value of the setting is not "appname.models.modelname", it's just "appname.modelname". The reason is that Django is not using this to do a direct import; instead, it's using an internal model-loading function which only wants the name of the app and the name of the model. Trying to do things like "appname.models.modelname" or "projectname.appname.models.modelname" in the AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE setting will cause Django to blow up with the dreaded "too many values to unpack" error, so make sure you've put "appname.modelname", and nothing else, in the value of AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE.

If the OP had copied more of the traceback I would expect to see something like the one below which I was able to duplicate by adding "models" to my AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE setting.

ValueError: too many values to unpack

This I think is one of the few cases where Django still has a bit of import magic that tends to cause confusion when a small error doesn't throw the expected exception.

You can see at the end of the traceback that I posted how using anything other than the form "appname.modelname" for the AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE would cause the line "app_label, model_name = settings.AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE.split('.')" to throw the "too many values to unpack" error.

I'm 99% sure that this was the original problem encountered here.

What's the name for hyphen-separated case?

There is no standardized name.

Libraries like jquery and lodash refer it as kebab-case. So does Vuejs javascript framework. However, I am not sure whether it's safe to declare that it's referred as kebab-case in javascript world.

no default constructor exists for class

If you define a class without any constructor, the compiler will synthesize a constructor for you (and that will be a default constructor -- i.e., one that doesn't require any arguments). If, however, you do define a constructor, (even if it does take one or more arguments) the compiler will not synthesize a constructor for you -- at that point, you've taken responsibility for constructing objects of that class, so the compiler "steps back", so to speak, and leaves that job to you.

You have two choices. You need to either provide a default constructor, or you need to supply the correct parameter when you define an object. For example, you could change your constructor to look something like:

Blowfish(BlowfishAlgorithm algorithm = CBC);

...so the ctor could be invoked without (explicitly) specifying an algorithm (in which case it would use CBC as the algorithm).

The other alternative would be to explicitly specify the algorithm when you define a Blowfish object:

class GameCryptography {
    Blowfish blowfish_;
public:
    GameCryptography() : blowfish_(ECB) {}
    // ...
};

In C++ 11 (or later) you have one more option available. You can define your constructor that takes an argument, but then tell the compiler to generate the constructor it would have if you didn't define one:

class GameCryptography {
public:

    // define our ctor that takes an argument
    GameCryptography(BlofishAlgorithm);

    // Tell the compiler to do what it would have if we didn't define a ctor:
    GameCryptography() = default;
};

As a final note, I think it's worth mentioning that ECB, CBC, CFB, etc., are modes of operation, not really encryption algorithms themselves. Calling them algorithms won't bother the compiler, but is unreasonably likely to cause a problem for others reading the code.

AngularJs: How to set radio button checked based on model

Ended up just using the built-in angular attribute ng-checked="model"

how to get program files x86 env variable?

Another relevant environment variable is:

%ProgramW6432%

So, on a 64-bit machine running in 32-bit (WOW64) mode:

  • echo %programfiles% ==> C:\Program Files (x86)
  • echo %programfiles(x86)% ==> C:\Program Files (x86)
  • echo %ProgramW6432% ==> C:\Program Files

From Wikipedia:

The %ProgramFiles% variable points to the Program Files directory, which stores all the installed programs of Windows and others. The default on English-language systems is "C:\Program Files". In 64-bit editions of Windows (XP, 2003, Vista), there are also %ProgramFiles(x86)%, which defaults to "C:\Program Files (x86)", and %ProgramW6432%, which defaults to "C:\Program Files". The %ProgramFiles% itself depends on whether the process requesting the environment variable is itself 32-bit or 64-bit (this is caused by Windows-on-Windows 64-bit redirection).

How do I reference a cell within excel named range?

"Do you know if there's a way to make this work with relative selections, so that the formula can be "dragged down"/applied across several cells in the same column?"

To make such selection relative simply use ROW formula for a row number in INDEX formula and COLUMN formula for column number in INDEX formula. To make this clearer here is the example:

=INDEX(named_range,ROW(A1),COLUMN(A1))

Assuming the named range starts at A1 this formula simply indexes that range by row and column number of referenced cell and since that reference is relative it changes when you drag the the cell down or to the side, which makes it possible to create whole array of cells easily.

Remove an element from a Bash array

What I do is:

array="$(echo $array | tr ' ' '\n' | sed "/itemtodelete/d")"

BAM, that item is removed.

How to verify if $_GET exists?

You are use PHP isset

Example

if (isset($_GET["id"])) {
    echo $_GET["id"];
}

Excel column number from column name

Here's a pure VBA solution because Excel can hold joined cells:

Public Function GetIndexForColumn(Column As String) As Long
    Dim astrColumn()    As String
    Dim Result          As Long
    Dim i               As Integer
    Dim n               As Integer

    Column = UCase(Column)
    ReDim astrColumn(Len(Column) - 1)
    For i = 0 To (Len(Column) - 1)
        astrColumn(i) = Mid(Column, (i + 1), 1)
    Next
    n = 1
    For i = UBound(astrColumn) To 0 Step -1
        Result = (Result + ((Asc(astrColumn(i)) - 64) * n))
        n = (n * 26)
    Next
    GetIndexForColumn = Result
End Function

Basically, this function does the same as any Hex to Dec function, except that it only takes alphabetical chars (A = 1, B = 2, ...). The rightmost char counts single, each char to the left counts 26 times the char right to it (which makes AA = 27 [1 + 26], AAA = 703 [1 + 26 + 676]). The use of UCase() makes this function case-insensitive.

Proper Linq where clauses

EDIT: LINQ to Objects doesn't behave how I'd expected it to. You may well be interested in the blog post I've just written about this...

They're different in terms of what will be called - the first is equivalent to:

Collection.Where(x => x.Age == 10)
          .Where(x => x.Name == "Fido")
          .Where(x => x.Fat == true)

wheras the latter is equivalent to:

Collection.Where(x => x.Age == 10 &&
                      x.Name == "Fido" &&
                      x.Fat == true)

Now what difference that actually makes depends on the implementation of Where being called. If it's a SQL-based provider, I'd expect the two to end up creating the same SQL. If it's in LINQ to Objects, the second will have fewer levels of indirection (there'll be just two iterators involved instead of four). Whether those levels of indirection are significant in terms of speed is a different matter.

Typically I would use several where clauses if they feel like they're representing significantly different conditions (e.g. one is to do with one part of an object, and one is completely separate) and one where clause when various conditions are closely related (e.g. a particular value is greater than a minimum and less than a maximum). Basically it's worth considering readability before any slight performance difference.

Use 'import module' or 'from module import'?

import module

Is best when you will use many functions from the module.

from module import function

Is best when you want to avoid polluting the global namespace with all the functions and types from a module when you only need function.

Pad a number with leading zeros in JavaScript

You could do something like this:

function pad ( num, size ) {
  return ( Math.pow( 10, size ) + ~~num ).toString().substring( 1 );
}

Edit: This was just a basic idea for a function, but to add support for larger numbers (as well as invalid input), this would probably be better:

function pad ( num, size ) {
  if (num.toString().length >= size) return num;
  return ( Math.pow( 10, size ) + Math.floor(num) ).toString().substring( 1 );
}

This does 2 things:

  1. If the number is larger than the specified size, it will simply return the number.
  2. Using Math.floor(num) in place of ~~num will support larger numbers.
