Programs & Examples On #Pyusb

PyUSB is a Python library allowing easy USB access. Make sure to provide all relevant details like exact versions of the operating system, PyUSB library and libusb backend you are trying to use.

Simple way to query connected USB devices info in Python?

For linux, I wrote a script called find_port.py which you can find here: https://github.com/dhylands/usb-ser-mon/blob/master/usb_ser_mon/find_port.py

It uses pyudev to enumerate all tty devices, and can match on various attributes.

Use the --list option to show all of the know USB serial ports and their attributes. You can filter by VID, PID, serial number, or vendor name. Use --help to see the filtering options.

find_port.py prints the /dev/ttyXXX name rather than the /dev/usb/... name.

How to vertically align text in input type="text"?

input[type=text]

   height: 15px;
   line-height: 15px;
}

this is correct way to set vertical-middle position.

How do I make a WPF TextBlock show my text on multiple lines?

This gets part way there. There is no ActualFontSize property but there is an ActualHeight and that would relate to the FontSize. Right now this only sizes for the original render. I could not figure out how to register the Converter as resize event. Actually maybe need to register the FontSize as a resize event. Please don't mark me down for an incomplete answer. I could not put code sample in a comment.

Android fade in and fade out with ImageView

This is probably the best solution you'll get. Simple and Easy. I learned it on udemy. Suppose you have two images having image id's id1 and id2 respectively and currently the image view is set as id1 and you want to change it to the other image everytime someone clicks in. So this is the basic code in MainActivity.java File

int clickNum=0;
public void click(View view){
clickNum++;
ImageView a=(ImageView)findViewById(R.id.id1);
ImageView b=(ImageView)findViewById(R.id.id2);
if(clickNum%2==1){
  a.animate().alpha(0f).setDuration(2000); //alpha controls the transpiracy
}
else if(clickNum%2==0){
  b.animate().alpha(0f).setDuration(2000); //alpha controls the transpiracy
}

}

I hope this will surely help

How can I debug my JavaScript code?

I'm using Venkman, a JavaScript debugger for XUL applications.

How does Facebook disable the browser's integrated Developer Tools?

Chrome changed a lot since the times facebook could disable console...

As per March 2017 this doesn't work anymore.

Best you can do is disable some of the console functions, example:

if(!window.console) window.console = {};
var methods = ["log", "debug", "warn", "info", "dir", "dirxml", "trace", "profile"];
for(var i=0;i<methods.length;i++){
    console[methods[i]] = function(){};
}

Create a file if it doesn't exist

If you don't need atomicity you can use os module:

import os

if not os.path.exists('/tmp/test'):
    os.mknod('/tmp/test')

UPDATE:

As Cory Klein mentioned, on Mac OS for using os.mknod() you need a root permissions, so if you are Mac OS user, you may use open() instead of os.mknod()

import os

if not os.path.exists('/tmp/test'):
    with open('/tmp/test', 'w'): pass

How to add chmod permissions to file in Git?

According to official documentation, you can set or remove the "executable" flag on any tracked file using update-index sub-command.

To set the flag, use following command:

git update-index --chmod=+x path/to/file

To remove it, use:

git update-index --chmod=-x path/to/file

Under the hood

While this looks like the regular unix files permission system, actually it is not. Git maintains a special "mode" for each file in its internal storage:

  • 100644 for regular files
  • 100755 for executable ones

You can visualize it using ls-file subcommand, with --stage option:

$ git ls-files --stage
100644 aee89ef43dc3b0ec6a7c6228f742377692b50484 0       .gitignore
100755 0ac339497485f7cc80d988561807906b2fd56172 0       my_executable_script.sh

By default, when you add a file to a repository, Git will try to honor its filesystem attributes and set the correct filemode accordingly. You can disable this by setting core.fileMode option to false:

git config core.fileMode false

Troubleshooting

If at some point the Git filemode is not set but the file has correct filesystem flag, try to remove mode and set it again:

git update-index --chmod=-x path/to/file
git update-index --chmod=+x path/to/file

Bonus

Starting with Git 2.9, you can stage a file AND set the flag in one command:

git add --chmod=+x path/to/file

ASP.NET IIS Web.config [Internal Server Error]

Check this in the web.config and change overrideModeDefault from Deny to Allow.

<configSections>
  <sectionGroup name="system.webServer">
    <section name="handlers" overrideModeDefault="Deny" />
    <section name="modules" allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" overrideModeDefault="Deny" />

You can also manage sections on web server level in your IIS management console from "Feature Delegation".

How to change an image on click using CSS alone?

some people have suggested the "visited", but the visited links remain in the browsers cache, so the next time your user visits the page, the link will have the second image.. i dont know it that's the desired effect you want. Anyway you coul mix JS and CSS:

<style>
.off{
    color:red;
}
.on{
    color:green;
}
</style>
<a href="" class="off" onclick="this.className='on';return false;">Foo</a>

using the onclick event, you can change (or toggle maybe?) the class name of the element. In this example i change the text color but you could also change the background image.

Good Luck

React-router: How to manually invoke Link?

If you'd like to extend the Link component to utilise some of the logic in it's onClick() handler, here's how:

import React from 'react';
import { Link } from "react-router-dom";

// Extend react-router-dom Link to include a function for validation.
class LinkExtra extends Link {
  render() {
    const linkMarkup = super.render();
    const { validation, ...rest} = linkMarkup.props; // Filter out props for <a>.
    const onclick = event => {
      if (!this.props.validation || this.props.validation()) {
        this.handleClick(event);
      } else {
        event.preventDefault();
        console.log("Failed validation");
      }
    }

    return(
      <a {...rest} onClick={onclick} />
    )
  }
}

export default LinkExtra;

Usage

<LinkExtra to="/mypage" validation={() => false}>Next</LinkExtra>

SSIS Excel Import Forcing Incorrect Column Type

I've seen this issue before, it's Excel that is the issue not SSIS. Excel samples the 1st few rows and then infers the data type even if you explicitly set it to text. What you need to do is put this into the Excel file connection string in the SSIS package. This instruction tells Excel that the columns contain mixed data types and hints it to do extra checking before deciding that the column is a numeric type when in fact it's not.

;Extended Properties="IMEX=1"

It should work with this (in most cases). The safer thing to do is export the Excel data to tab delimited text and use SSIS to import that.

Is it possible to put a ConstraintLayout inside a ScrollView?

How to drop all user tables?

If you just want a really simple way to do this.. Heres a script I have used in the past

select 'drop table '||table_name||' cascade constraints;' from user_tables;

This will print out a series of drop commands for all tables in the schema. Spool the result of this query and execute it.

Source: https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=614090

Likewise if you want to clear more than tables you can edit the following to suit your needs

select 'drop '||object_type||' '|| object_name || ';' from user_objects where object_type in ('VIEW','PACKAGE','SEQUENCE', 'PROCEDURE', 'FUNCTION', 'INDEX')

Java 8 stream map to list of keys sorted by values

You can sort a map by value as below, more example here

//Sort a Map by their Value.
Map<Integer, String> random = new HashMap<Integer, String>();

random.put(1,"z");
random.put(6,"k");
random.put(5,"a");
random.put(3,"f");
random.put(9,"c");

Map<Integer, String> sortedMap =
        random.entrySet().stream()
                .sorted(Map.Entry.comparingByValue())
                .collect(Collectors.toMap(Map.Entry::getKey, Map.Entry::getValue,
                        (e1, e2) -> e2, LinkedHashMap::new));
System.out.println("Sorted Map: " + Arrays.toString(sortedMap.entrySet().toArray()));

How to force a checkbox and text on the same line?

Try this. The following considers checkbox and label as a unique element:

<style>
  .item {white-space: nowrap;display:inline  }
</style>
<fieldset>
<div class="item">
    <input type="checkbox" id="a">
    <label for="a">aaaaaaaaaaaa aaaa a a a a a a aaaaaaaaaaaaa</label>
</div>
<div class="item">
   <input type="checkbox" id="b">
<!-- depending on width, a linebreak NEVER occurs here. -->
    <label for="b">bbbbbbbbbbbb bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb  b b b b  bb</label>
</div>
<div class="item">
    <input type="checkbox" id="c">
    <label for="c">ccccc c c c c ccccccccccccccc  cccc</label>
</div>
</fieldset>

Use find command but exclude files in two directories

for me, this solution didn't worked on a command exec with find, don't really know why, so my solution is

find . -type f -path "./a/*" -prune -o -path "./b/*" -prune -o -exec gzip -f -v {} \;

Explanation: same as sampson-chen one with the additions of

-prune - ignore the proceding path of ...

-o - Then if no match print the results, (prune the directories and print the remaining results)

18:12 $ mkdir a b c d e
18:13 $ touch a/1 b/2 c/3 d/4 e/5 e/a e/b
18:13 $ find . -type f -path "./a/*" -prune -o -path "./b/*" -prune -o -exec gzip -f -v {} \;

gzip: . is a directory -- ignored
gzip: ./a is a directory -- ignored
gzip: ./b is a directory -- ignored
gzip: ./c is a directory -- ignored
./c/3:    0.0% -- replaced with ./c/3.gz
gzip: ./d is a directory -- ignored
./d/4:    0.0% -- replaced with ./d/4.gz
gzip: ./e is a directory -- ignored
./e/5:    0.0% -- replaced with ./e/5.gz
./e/a:    0.0% -- replaced with ./e/a.gz
./e/b:    0.0% -- replaced with ./e/b.gz

Bash Shell Script - Check for a flag and grab its value

Use $# to grab the number of arguments, if it is unequal to 2 there are not enough arguments provided:

if [ $# -ne 2 ]; then
   usage;
fi

Next, check if $1 equals -t, otherwise an unknown flag was used:

if [ "$1" != "-t" ]; then
  usage;
fi

Finally store $2 in FLAG:

FLAG=$2

Note: usage() is some function showing the syntax. For example:

function usage {
   cat << EOF
Usage: script.sh -t <application>

Performs some activity
EOF
   exit 1
}

How do I find the data directory for a SQL Server instance?

Alex's answer is the right one, but for posterity here's another option: create a new empty database. If you use CREATE DATABASE without specifying a target dir you get... the default data / log directories. Easy.

Personally however I'd probably either:

  • RESTORE the database to the developer's PC, rather than copy/attach (backups can be compressed, exposed on a UNC), or
  • Use a linked server to avoid doing this in the first place (depends how much data goes over the join)

ps: 20gb is not huge, even in 2015. But it's all relative.

How do I output coloured text to a Linux terminal?

You need to output ANSI colour codes. Note that not all terminals support this; if colour sequences are not supported, garbage will show up.

Example:

 cout << "\033[1;31mbold red text\033[0m\n";

Here, \033 is the ESC character, ASCII 27. It is followed by [, then zero or more numbers separated by ;, and finally the letter m. The numbers describe the colour and format to switch to from that point onwards.

The codes for foreground and background colours are:

         foreground background
black        30         40
red          31         41
green        32         42
yellow       33         43
blue         34         44
magenta      35         45
cyan         36         46
white        37         47

Additionally, you can use these:

reset 0 (everything back to normal)
bold/bright 1 (often a brighter shade of the same colour)
underline         4
inverse 7 (swap foreground and background colours)
bold/bright off  21
underline off    24
inverse off      27

See the table on Wikipedia for other, less widely supported codes.

To determine whether your terminal supports colour sequences, read the value of the TERM environment variable. It should specify the particular terminal type used (e.g. vt100, gnome-terminal, xterm, screen, ...). Then look that up in the terminfo database; check the colors capability.

Video format or MIME type is not supported

FIXED IT!

I was losing my mind over this one. Reset firefox, tried safe mode, removed plugins, debugged using developers tools. All were to no avail and didn't get me any further with getting my online videos back to normal viewing condition. This however did the trick perfectly.

Within Firefox or whatever flavor of Firefox you have(CyberFox being my favorite choice here), simply browse to https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

VERIFY FIRST that the website detected you're using FireFox and has set your download for the flash player to be for Firefox.

Don't just click download. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF the migraine and ALWAYS make sure that the middle section labeled "Optional offer:" is absolutely NOT CHECKED, it will be checked by default so always UNCHECK it before proceeding to download.

After it's finished downloading, close out of Firefox. Run the downloaded setup file As Administrator. It takes only a few seconds or so to complete, so after it's done, open up Firefox again and try viewing anything that was previously throwing this error. Should be back to normal now.

Enjoy!

Using Python String Formatting with Lists

Here is a one liner. A little improvised answer using format with print() to iterate a list.

How about this (python 3.x):

sample_list = ['cat', 'dog', 'bunny', 'pig']
print("Your list of animals are: {}, {}, {} and {}".format(*sample_list))

Read the docs here on using format().

How to insert a text at the beginning of a file?

With the echo approach, if you are on macOS/BSD like me, lose the -n switch that other people suggest. And I like to define a variable for the text.

So it would be like this:

{ echo "$Header"; cat "old.txt"; } > "new.txt"
mv new.txt old.txt

How do I link to part of a page? (hash?)

Provided that any element has the id attribute on a webpage. One could simply link/jump to the element that is referenced by the tag.

Other page:

<div id="http://randomwebsite.com/mypage.html#markOne">

Visual Studio opens the default browser instead of Internet Explorer

Scott Guthrie has made a post on how to change Visual Studio's default browser:

1) Right click on a .aspx page in your solution explorer

2) Select the "browse with" context menu option

3) In the dialog you can select or add a browser. If you want Firefox in the list, click "add" and point to the firefox.exe filename

4) Click the "Set as Default" button to make this the default browser when you run any page on the site.

I however dislike the fact that this isn't as straightforward as it should be.

What is an example of the Liskov Substitution Principle?

A square is a rectangle where the width equals the height. If the square sets two different sizes for the width and height it violates the square invariant. This is worked around by introducing side effects. But if the rectangle had a setSize(height, width) with precondition 0 < height and 0 < width. The derived subtype method requires height == width; a stronger precondition (and that violates lsp). This shows that though square is a rectangle it is not a valid subtype because the precondition is strengthened. The work around (in general a bad thing) cause a side effect and this weakens the post condition (which violates lsp). setWidth on the base has post condition 0 < width. The derived weakens it with height == width.

Therefore a resizable square is not a resizable rectangle.

Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Http 4.0.0 after update from 2012 to 2013

I simply set Copy Local = true on the missing assembly and that worked. This of course happens by right clicking on the missing reference (which is stated in the error message) and selecting properties; as below:

enter image description here

This should then solve one problem as there might be more than one assembly causing the issue - what I did is I selected all assemblies and right click on them; selected properties; and set them all to Copy Local = true; and then republish.

How do I fix "for loop initial declaration used outside C99 mode" GCC error?

I had the same problem and it works you just have to declare the i outside of the loop:

int i;

for(i = low; i <= high; ++i)

{
        res = runalg(i);
        if (res > highestres)
        {
                highestres = res;
        }

}

PHP check if date between two dates

Simple solution:

function betweenDates($cmpDate,$startDate,$endDate){
   return (date($cmpDate) > date($startDate)) && (date($cmpDate) < date($endDate));
}

I got error "The DELETE statement conflicted with the REFERENCE constraint"

To DELETE, without changing the references, you should first delete or otherwise alter (in a manner suitable for your purposes) all relevant rows in other tables.

To TRUNCATE you must remove the references. TRUNCATE is a DDL statement (comparable to CREATE and DROP) not a DML statement (like INSERT and DELETE) and doesn't cause triggers, whether explicit or those associated with references and other constraints, to be fired. Because of this, the database could be put into an inconsistent state if TRUNCATE was allowed on tables with references. This was a rule when TRUNCATE was an extension to the standard used by some systems, and is mandated by the the standard, now that it has been added.

Cannot connect to repo with TortoiseSVN

I was struggling with exactly the same issue. I got my work laptop replaced and suddenly I stopped being able to connect to server. Strangely, initially I was getting errors only blocking me from committing, like: Command : Commit Error : Commit failed (details follow): Error : MKACTIVITY of '/svn//!svn/act/c511b853-23b4-db4a-8991-0bc689a63353': Error : Could not parse response status line (http://*.**.com) Completed! :

When I moved to work in another branch (the SVN server was accessible with no issues for everyone on both branches, who has proper security), I started getting error like:

Command : Checkout from http://.com/svn/fineos//trunk, revision HEAD, Fully recursive, Externals included Error : Unable to connect to a repository at URL Error : 'http://**.com/svn/fineos*/*/trunk' Error : OPTIONS of Error : 'http://*.com/svn/fineos*/*/trunk': could Error : not connect to server (http://*.com) Completed! :

Note: In each case, I could access repository through browser and it was working for everyone else, so obviously it wasn't network or repository issue.

This what worked for me was to uninstall Tortoise client, then remove Tortoise cache folder from Local and Roaming folders under C:\Users\user\AppData. Additionally I renamed TortoiseSVN node in Windows registry so the old configuration cannot be found. Then after reinstallation, client connected to repo beautifully. I am not sure if both steps are required, maybe just changing registry will be enough, I will leave that to you to confirm.

Apologies for long response, but as I haven't seen response to this problem after googling for longer while, I thought that may be helpful for different cases.

How to add buttons at top of map fragment API v2 layout

Button Above The Map

If this is what you want ...simply add button inside the Fragment.

<fragment xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
    android:id="@+id/map"
    android:name="com.google.android.gms.maps.SupportMapFragment"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"
    tools:context="com.example.LocationChooser">

    <Button
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_gravity="right|top"
        android:text="Demo Button"
        android:padding="10dp"
        android:layout_marginTop="20dp"
        android:paddingRight="10dp"/>

</fragment>

Alternating Row Colors in Bootstrap 3 - No Table

I find that if I specify .row:nth-of-type(..), my other row's elements (for other formatting, etc) also get alternating colours. So rather, I'd define in my css an entirely new class:

.row-striped:nth-of-type(odd){
  background-color: #efefef;
}

.row-striped:nth-of-type(even){
  background-color: #ffffff;
}

So now, the alternating row colours will only apply to the row container, when I specify its class as .row-striped, and not the elements inside the row.

<!-- this entire row container is #efefef -->
<div class="row row-striped">
    <div class="form-group">
        <div class="col-sm-8"><h5>Field Greens with strawberry vinegrette</h5></div>
        <div class="col-sm-4">
            <input type="number" type="number" step="1" min="0"></input><small>$30/salad</small>
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

<!-- this entire row container is #ffffff -->
<div class="row row-striped">
    <div class="form-group">
        <div class="col-sm-8"><h5>Greek Salad</h5></div>
        <div class="col-sm-4">
            <input type="number" type="number" step="1" min="0"></input><small>$25/salad</small>
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

What's the purpose of META-INF?

I've noticed that some Java libraries have started using META-INF as a directory in which to include configuration files that should be packaged and included in the CLASSPATH along with JARs. For example, Spring allows you to import XML Files that are on the classpath using:

<import resource="classpath:/META-INF/cxf/cxf.xml" />
<import resource="classpath:/META-INF/cxf/cxf-extensions-*.xml" />

In this example, I'm quoting straight out of the Apache CXF User Guide. On a project I worked on in which we had to allow multiple levels of configuration via Spring, we followed this convention and put our configuration files in META-INF.

When I reflect on this decision, I don't know what exactly would be wrong with simply including the configuration files in a specific Java package, rather than in META-INF. But it seems to be an emerging de facto standard; either that, or an emerging anti-pattern :-)

Getting only 1 decimal place

Are you trying to represent it with only one digit:

print("{:.1f}".format(number)) # Python3
print "%.1f" % number          # Python2

or actually round off the other decimal places?

round(number,1)

or even round strictly down?

math.floor(number*10)/10

Java: Sending Multiple Parameters to Method

The solution depends on the answer to the question - are all the parameters going to be the same type and if so will each be treated the same?

If the parameters are not the same type or more importantly are not going to be treated the same then you should use method overloading:

public class MyClass
{
  public void doSomething(int i)
  {
    ...
  }

  public void doSomething(int i, String s)
  {
    ...
  }

  public void doSomething(int i, String s, boolean b)
  {
    ...
  }
}

If however each parameter is the same type and will be treated in the same way then you can use the variable args feature in Java:

public MyClass
{
  public void doSomething(int... integers)
  {
    for (int i : integers)
    {
      ...
    }
  }
}

Obviously when using variable args you can access each arg by its index but I would advise against this as in most cases it hints at a problem in your design. Likewise, if you find yourself doing type checks as you iterate over the arguments then your design needs a review.

How to set specific Java version to Maven

I just recently, after seven long years with Maven, learned about toolchains.xml. Maven has it even documented and supports it from 2.0.9 - toolchains documentation

So I added a toolchain.xml file to my ~/.m2/ folder with following content:

<toolchains xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/TOOLCHAINS/1.1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
 xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/TOOLCHAINS/1.1.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/toolchains-1.1.0.xsd">
 <!-- JDK toolchains -->
 <toolchain>
   <type>jdk</type>
   <provides>
     <version>1.8</version>
     <vendor>sun</vendor>
   </provides>
   <configuration>
     <jdkHome>/opt/java8</jdkHome>
   </configuration>
 </toolchain>
 <toolchain>
   <type>jdk</type>
   <provides>
     <version>1.7</version>
     <vendor>sun</vendor>
   </provides>
   <configuration>
     <jdkHome>/opt/java7</jdkHome>
   </configuration>
 </toolchain>
</toolchains>

It allows you to define what different JDKs Maven can use to build the project irrespective of the JDK Maven runs with. Sort of like when you define JDK on project level in IDE.

How to switch to new window in Selenium for Python?

You can do it by using window_handles and switch_to_window method.

Before clicking the link first store the window handle as

window_before = driver.window_handles[0]

after clicking the link store the window handle of newly opened window as

window_after = driver.window_handles[1]

then execute the switch to window method to move to newly opened window

driver.switch_to_window(window_after)

and similarly you can switch between old and new window. Following is the code example

import unittest
from selenium import webdriver

class GoogleOrgSearch(unittest.TestCase):

    def setUp(self):
        self.driver = webdriver.Firefox()

    def test_google_search_page(self):
        driver = self.driver
        driver.get("http://www.cdot.in")
        window_before = driver.window_handles[0]
        print window_before
        driver.find_element_by_xpath("//a[@href='http://www.cdot.in/home.htm']").click()
        window_after = driver.window_handles[1]
        driver.switch_to_window(window_after)
        print window_after
        driver.find_element_by_link_text("ATM").click()
        driver.switch_to_window(window_before)

    def tearDown(self):
        self.driver.close()

if __name__ == "__main__":
    unittest.main()

How to perform Unwind segue programmatically?

Swift 4.2, Xcode 10+

For those wondering how to do this with VCs not set up via the storyboard (those coming to this question from searching "programmatically" + "unwind segue").

Given that you cannot set up an unwind segue programatically, the simplest solely programmatic solution is to call:

navigationController?.popToRootViewController(animated: true)

which will pop all view controllers on the stack back to your root view controller.

To pop just the topmost view controller from the navigation stack, use:

navigationController?.popViewController(animated: true)

fitting data with numpy

Unfortunately, np.polynomial.polynomial.polyfit returns the coefficients in the opposite order of that for np.polyfit and np.polyval (or, as you used np.poly1d). To illustrate:

In [40]: np.polynomial.polynomial.polyfit(x, y, 4)
Out[40]:
array([  84.29340848, -100.53595376,   44.83281408,   -8.85931101,
          0.65459882])

In [41]: np.polyfit(x, y, 4)
Out[41]:
array([   0.65459882,   -8.859311  ,   44.83281407, -100.53595375,
         84.29340846])

In general: np.polynomial.polynomial.polyfit returns coefficients [A, B, C] to A + Bx + Cx^2 + ..., while np.polyfit returns: ... + Ax^2 + Bx + C.

So if you want to use this combination of functions, you must reverse the order of coefficients, as in:

ffit = np.polyval(coefs[::-1], x_new)

However, the documentation states clearly to avoid np.polyfit, np.polyval, and np.poly1d, and instead to use only the new(er) package.

You're safest to use only the polynomial package:

import numpy.polynomial.polynomial as poly

coefs = poly.polyfit(x, y, 4)
ffit = poly.polyval(x_new, coefs)
plt.plot(x_new, ffit)

Or, to create the polynomial function:

ffit = poly.Polynomial(coefs)    # instead of np.poly1d
plt.plot(x_new, ffit(x_new))

fit and data plot

mysqldump & gzip commands to properly create a compressed file of a MySQL database using crontab

Besides the solution of m79lkm above, my 2 cents on this topic is not to directly pipe the result in gzip but first dump it as a .sql file, and then gzip it. (Use && instead of | )

The dump itself will be faster. (for what I tested it was double as fast)

Otherwise you tables will be locked longer and the downtime/slow-responding of your application can bother the users. The mysqldump command is taking a lot of resources from your server.

So I would go for "&& gzip" instead of "| gzip"

Important: check for free disk space first with df -h since you will need more then piping | gzip.

mysqldump -u user -p[user_password] [database_name] > dumpfilename.sql && gzip dumpfilename.sql

-> which will also result in 1 file called dumpfilename.sql.gz

Furthermore the option --single-transaction prevents the tables being locked but still result in a solid backup. So you might consider to use that option. See docs here

mysqldump --single-transaction -u user -p[user_password] [database_name] > dumpfilename.sql && gzip dumpfilename.sql

How can I backup a Docker-container with its data-volumes?

If you just need a simple backup to an archive, you can try my little utility: https://github.com/loomchild/volume-backup

Example

Backup:

docker run -v some_volume:/volume -v /tmp:/backup --rm loomchild/volume-backup backup archive1

will archive volume named some_volume to /tmp/archive1.tar.bz2 archive file

Restore:

docker run -v some_volume:/volume -v /tmp:/backup --rm loomchild/volume-backup restore archive1

will wipe and restore volume named some_volume from /tmp/archive1.tar.bz2 archive file.

Checking if a file is a directory or just a file

You can call the stat() function and use the S_ISREG() macro on the st_mode field of the stat structure in order to determine if your path points to a regular file:

#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/stat.h>
#include <unistd.h>

int is_regular_file(const char *path)
{
    struct stat path_stat;
    stat(path, &path_stat);
    return S_ISREG(path_stat.st_mode);
}

Note that there are other file types besides regular and directory, like devices, pipes, symbolic links, sockets, etc. You might want to take those into account.

SQL Server 2008 - Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication

Your error is quite literally saying "you're trying to use Windows Authentication, but your login isn't from a trusted domain". Which is odd, because you're connecting to the local machine.

Perhaps you're logged into Windows using a local account rather than a domain account? Ensure that you're logging in with a domain account that is also a SQL Server principal on your SQL2008 instance.

"NOT IN" clause in LINQ to Entities

I created it in a more similar way to the SQL, I think it is easier to understand

var list = (from a in listA.AsEnumerable()
            join b in listB.AsEnumerable() on a.id equals b.id into ab
            from c in ab.DefaultIfEmpty()
            where c != null
            select new { id = c.id, name = c.nome }).ToList();

Global and local variables in R

Variables declared inside a function are local to that function. For instance:

foo <- function() {
    bar <- 1
}
foo()
bar

gives the following error: Error: object 'bar' not found.

If you want to make bar a global variable, you should do:

foo <- function() {
    bar <<- 1
}
foo()
bar

In this case bar is accessible from outside the function.

However, unlike C, C++ or many other languages, brackets do not determine the scope of variables. For instance, in the following code snippet:

if (x > 10) {
    y <- 0
}
else {
    y <- 1
}

y remains accessible after the if-else statement.

As you well say, you can also create nested environments. You can have a look at these two links for understanding how to use them:

  1. http://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/base/html/environment.html
  2. http://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/base/html/get.html

Here you have a small example:

test.env <- new.env()

assign('var', 100, envir=test.env)
# or simply
test.env$var <- 100

get('var') # var cannot be found since it is not defined in this environment
get('var', envir=test.env) # now it can be found

How to export library to Jar in Android Studio?

It is not possible to export an Android library as a jar file. It is possible, however, to export it as aar file. Aar files being the new binary format for Android libraries. There's info about them in Google I/O, the New Build System video.

First, build the library in Android Studio or from command line issuing gradle build from your library's root directory.

This will result in <yourlibroot>/libs/build/yourlib.aar file.

This aar file is a binary representation of your library and can be added to your project instead of the library as a dependency project.

To add aar file as a dependency you have to publish it to the maven central or to your local maven repository, and then refer the aar file in your project's gradle.build file.

However, this step is a bit convoluted. I've found a good explanation how to do so here:

http://www.flexlabs.org/2013/06/using-local-aar-android-library-packages-in-gradle-builds

How to get values of selected items in CheckBoxList with foreach in ASP.NET C#?

Note that I prefer the code to be short.

List<ListItem> selected = CBLGold.Items.Cast<ListItem>()
    .Where(li => li.Selected)
    .ToList();

or with a simple foreach:

List<ListItem> selected = new List<ListItem>();
foreach (ListItem item in CBLGold.Items)
    if (item.Selected) selected.Add(item);

If you just want the ListItem.Value:

List<string> selectedValues = CBLGold.Items.Cast<ListItem>()
   .Where(li => li.Selected)
   .Select(li => li.Value)
   .ToList();

How to draw border around a UILabel?

Here are some things you can do with UILabel and its borders.

enter image description here

Here is the code for those labels:

import UIKit
class ViewController: UIViewController {

    @IBOutlet weak var label1: UILabel!
    @IBOutlet weak var label2: UILabel!
    @IBOutlet weak var label3: UILabel!
    @IBOutlet weak var label4: UILabel!
    @IBOutlet weak var label5: UILabel!
    @IBOutlet weak var label6: UILabel!

    override func viewDidLoad() {
        super.viewDidLoad()

        // label 1
        label1.layer.borderWidth = 1.0

        // label 2
        label2.layer.borderWidth = 5.0
        label2.layer.borderColor = UIColor.blue.cgColor

        // label 3
        label3.layer.borderWidth = 2.0
        label3.layer.cornerRadius = 8

        // label 4
        label4.backgroundColor = UIColor.cyan

        // label 5
        label5.backgroundColor = UIColor.red
        label5.layer.cornerRadius = 8
        label5.layer.masksToBounds = true

        // label 6
        label6.layer.borderWidth = 2.0
        label6.layer.cornerRadius = 8
        label6.backgroundColor = UIColor.yellow
        label6.layer.masksToBounds = true
    }
}

Note that in Swift there is no need to import QuartzCore.

What is the difference between 'E', 'T', and '?' for Java generics?

A type variable, <T>, can be any non-primitive type you specify: any class type, any interface type, any array type, or even another type variable.

The most commonly used type parameter names are:

  • E - Element (used extensively by the Java Collections Framework)
  • K - Key
  • N - Number
  • T - Type
  • V - Value

In Java 7 it is permitted to instantiate like this:

Foo<String, Integer> foo = new Foo<>(); // Java 7
Foo<String, Integer> foo = new Foo<String, Integer>(); // Java 6

What does the arrow operator, '->', do in Java?

I believe, this arrow exists because of your IDE. IntelliJ IDEA does such thing with some code. This is called code folding. You can click at the arrow to expand it.

Get properties of a class

This TypeScript code

class A {
    private a1;
    public a2;
}

compiles to this JavaScript code

class A {
}

That's because properties in JavaScript start extisting only after they have some value. You have to assign the properties some value.

class A {
    private a1 = "";
    public a2 = "";
}

it compiles to

class A {
    constructor() {
        this.a1 = "";
        this.a2 = "";
    }
}

Still, you cannot get the properties from mere class (you can get only methods from prototype). You must create an instance. Then you get the properties by calling Object.getOwnPropertyNames().

let a = new A();
let array = return Object.getOwnPropertyNames(a);

array[0] === "a1";
array[1] === "a2";

Applied to your example

class Describer {
    static describe(instance): Array<string> {
        return Object.getOwnPropertyNames(instance);
    }
}

let a = new A();
let x = Describer.describe(a);

How do I search for names with apostrophe in SQL Server?

Brackets are used around identifiers, so your code will look for the field %'% in the Header table. You want to use a string insteaed. To put an apostrophe in a string literal you use double apostrophes.

SELECT *
FROM Header WHERE userID LIKE '%''%'

How to add a margin to a table row <tr>

Because margin is ignored on tr, I usually use a workaround, by setting a transparent border-bottom or border-top and setting the background-clip property to padding-box so the background-color does not get painted underneath the border.

table {
   border-collapse: collapse; /* [1] */
}

th, td {
  border-bottom: 5px solid transparent; /* [2] */
  background-color: gold; /* [3] */
  background-clip: padding-box; /* [4] */
}
  1. Makes sure cells share a common border, but is completely optional. The solution works without it.
  2. The 5px value represents the margin that you want to achieve
  3. Sets the background-color of your row/cell
  4. Makes sure the background get not painted underneath the border

see a demo here: http://codepen.io/meodai/pen/MJMVNR?editors=1100

background-clip is supported in all modern browser. (And IE9+)

Alternatively you could use a border-spacing. But this will not work with border-collapse set to collapse.

Checkout Jenkins Pipeline Git SCM with credentials?

You can use the following in a pipeline:

git branch: 'master',
    credentialsId: '12345-1234-4696-af25-123455',
    url: 'ssh://[email protected]:company/repo.git'

If you're using the ssh url then your credentials must be username + private key. If you're using the https clone url instead of the ssh one, then your credentials should be username + password.

Passing parameter via url to sql server reporting service

As well as what Shiraz said, try something like this:

http://<server>/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2f<path>%2f<ReportName>&rs:Command=Render&UserID='fred'

Note the path would only work if you are in a single folder. When I have to do this I simply browse to the report using the reportserver path ("reports" is the report manager) and copy the url then add &<ParameterName>=<value> to the end.

Integration Testing POSTing an entire object to Spring MVC controller

I think most of these solutions are far too complicated. I assume that in your test controller you have this

 @Autowired
 private ObjectMapper objectMapper;

If its a rest service

@Test
public void test() throws Exception {
   mockMvc.perform(post("/person"))
          .contentType(MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON)
          .content(objectMapper.writeValueAsString(new Person()))
          ...etc
}

For spring mvc using a posted form I came up with this solution. (Not really sure if its a good idea yet)

private MultiValueMap<String, String> toFormParams(Object o, Set<String> excludeFields) throws Exception {
    ObjectReader reader = objectMapper.readerFor(Map.class);
    Map<String, String> map = reader.readValue(objectMapper.writeValueAsString(o));

    MultiValueMap<String, String> multiValueMap = new LinkedMultiValueMap<>();
    map.entrySet().stream()
            .filter(e -> !excludeFields.contains(e.getKey()))
            .forEach(e -> multiValueMap.add(e.getKey(), (e.getValue() == null ? "" : e.getValue())));
    return multiValueMap;
}

@Test
public void test() throws Exception {
  MultiValueMap<String, String> formParams = toFormParams(new Phone(),
  Set.of("id", "created"));

   mockMvc.perform(post("/person"))
          .contentType(MediaType.APPLICATION_FORM_URLENCODED)
          .params(formParams))
          ...etc
}

The basic idea is to - first convert object to json string to get all the field names easily - convert this json string into a map and dump it into a MultiValueMap that spring expects. Optionally filter out any fields you dont want to include (Or you could just annotate fields with @JsonIgnore to avoid this extra step)

How to size an Android view based on its parent's dimensions

It's something like this:

<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"
    tools:context="com.company.myapp.ActivityOrFragment"
    android:id="@+id/activity_or_fragment">

<LinearLayout
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:id="@+id/linearLayoutFirst"
    android:weightSum="100"> <!-- Overall weights sum of children elements -->

    <Spinner
        android:layout_width="0dp"   <!-- It's 0dp because is determined by android:layout_weight -->
        android:layout_weight="50"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:id="@+id/spinner" />

</LinearLayout>

<LinearLayout
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"

How to set label size in Bootstrap

In Bootstrap 3 they do not have separate classes for different styles of labels.

http://getbootstrap.com/components/

However, you can customize bootstrap classes that way. In your css file

.lb-sm {
  font-size: 12px;
}

.lb-md {
  font-size: 16px;
}

.lb-lg {
  font-size: 20px;
}

Alternatively, you can use header tags to change the sizes. For example, here is a medium sized label and a small-sized label

_x000D_
_x000D_
<link href="http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>_x000D_
<h3>Example heading <span class="label label-default">New</span></h3>_x000D_
<h6>Example heading <span class="label label-default">New</span></h6>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

They might add size classes for labels in future Bootstrap versions.

Hiding the address bar of a browser (popup)

There is no definite way to do that. JS may have the API, but the browser vendor may choose not to implement it or implement it in another way.

Also, as far as I remember, Opera even provides the user preferences to prevent JS from making such changes, like have the window move, change status bar content, and stuff like that.

What are the uses of "using" in C#?

The using keyword defines the scope for the object and then disposes of the object when the scope is complete. For example.

using (Font font2 = new Font("Arial", 10.0f))
{
    // use font2
}

See here for the MSDN article on the C# using keyword.

How to customise file type to syntax associations in Sublime Text?

There is a quick method to set the syntax: Ctrl+Shift+P,then type in the input box

ss + (which type you want set)

eg: ss html +Enter

and ss means "set syntax"

it is really quicker than check in the menu's checkbox.

Importing project into Netbeans

You may try creating a new project in netbeans and then copy and and paste the files into it. I usually experience this problem when the project wasn't created in netbeans.

Sending an Intent to browser to open specific URL

In some cases URL may start with "www". In this case you will get an exception:

android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: No Activity found to handle Intent

The URL must always start with "http://" or "https://" so I use this snipped of code:

if (!url.startsWith("https://") && !url.startsWith("http://")){
    url = "http://" + url;
}
Intent openUrlIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse(url));
startActivity(openUrlIntent);

Perform Button click event when user press Enter key in Textbox

Put your form inside an asp.net panel control and set its defaultButton attribute with your button Id. See the code below:

  <asp:Panel ID="Panel1" runat="server" DefaultButton="Button1">
        <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server" UpdateMode="Conditional">
         <ContentTemplate>
            <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>
            <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" onclick="Button1_Click" Text="Send" />
             </ContentTemplate>
          </asp:UpdatePanel>
    </asp:Panel>

Hope this will help you...

Can "list_display" in a Django ModelAdmin display attributes of ForeignKey fields?

If you have a lot of relation attribute fields to use in list_display and do not want create a function (and it's attributes) for each one, a dirt but simple solution would be override the ModelAdmin instace __getattr__ method, creating the callables on the fly:

class DynamicLookupMixin(object):
    '''
    a mixin to add dynamic callable attributes like 'book__author' which
    return a function that return the instance.book.author value
    '''

    def __getattr__(self, attr):
        if ('__' in attr
            and not attr.startswith('_')
            and not attr.endswith('_boolean')
            and not attr.endswith('_short_description')):

            def dyn_lookup(instance):
                # traverse all __ lookups
                return reduce(lambda parent, child: getattr(parent, child),
                              attr.split('__'),
                              instance)

            # get admin_order_field, boolean and short_description
            dyn_lookup.admin_order_field = attr
            dyn_lookup.boolean = getattr(self, '{}_boolean'.format(attr), False)
            dyn_lookup.short_description = getattr(
                self, '{}_short_description'.format(attr),
                attr.replace('_', ' ').capitalize())

            return dyn_lookup

        # not dynamic lookup, default behaviour
        return self.__getattribute__(attr)

# use examples

@admin.register(models.Person)
class PersonAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin, DynamicLookupMixin):
    list_display = ['book__author', 'book__publisher__name',
                    'book__publisher__country']

    # custom short description
    book__publisher__country_short_description = 'Publisher Country'

@admin.register(models.Product)
class ProductAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin, DynamicLookupMixin):
    list_display = ('name', 'category__is_new')

    # to show as boolean field
    category__is_new_boolean = True

As gist here

Callable especial attributes like boolean and short_description must be defined as ModelAdmin attributes, eg book__author_verbose_name = 'Author name' and category__is_new_boolean = True.

The callable admin_order_field attribute is defined automatically.

Don't forget to use the list_select_related attribute in your ModelAdmin to make Django avoid aditional queries.

How are people unit testing with Entity Framework 6, should you bother?

I like to separate my filters from other portions of the code and test those as I outline on my blog here http://coding.grax.com/2013/08/testing-custom-linq-filter-operators.html

That being said, the filter logic being tested is not identical to the filter logic executed when the program is run due to the translation between the LINQ expression and the underlying query language, such as T-SQL. Still, this allows me to validate the logic of the filter. I don't worry too much about the translations that happen and things such as case-sensitivity and null-handling until I test the integration between the layers.

Convert DataTable to CSV stream

If you can turn your datatable into an IEnumerable this should work for you...

    Response.Clear();
    Response.Buffer = true;

    Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename=FileName.csv");
    Response.Charset = "";
    Response.ContentType = "application/text";
    Response.Output.Write(ExampleClass.ConvertToCSV(GetListOfObject(), typeof(object)));
    Response.Flush();
    Response.End();

public static string ConvertToCSV(IEnumerable col, Type type)
        {
            StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
            StringBuilder header = new StringBuilder();

            // Gets all properies of the class
            PropertyInfo[] pi = type.GetProperties();

            // Create CSV header using the classes properties
            foreach (PropertyInfo p in pi)
            {
                header.Append(p.Name + ",");
            }

            sb.AppendLine(header.ToString().Remove(header.Length));

            foreach (object t in col)
            {
                StringBuilder body = new StringBuilder();

                // Create new item
                foreach (PropertyInfo p in pi)
                {
                    object o = p.GetValue(t, null);

What is /var/www/html?

/var/www/html is just the default root folder of the web server. You can change that to be whatever folder you want by editing your apache.conf file (usually located in /etc/apache/conf) and changing the DocumentRoot attribute (see http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/core.html#documentroot for info on that)

Many hosts don't let you change these things yourself, so your mileage may vary. Some let you change them, but only with the built in admin tools (cPanel, for example) instead of via a command line or editing the raw config files.

How do I make Java register a string input with spaces?

This is a sample implementation of taking input in java, I added some fault tolerance on just the salary field to show how it's done. If you notice, you also have to close the input stream .. Enjoy :-)

import java.util.Scanner;

public class userInputVersion1 {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

    System.out.println("** Taking in User input **");

    Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
    System.out.println("Please enter your name : ");

    //String s = input.next(); // getting a String value (issues with spaces in line)

    System.out.println("Please enter your age : ");
    int i = input.nextInt(); // getting an integer

        input.next();
    }
    double d = input.nextDouble(); // need to check the data type?

    System.out.printf("\nName %s" +

How to scroll to an element inside a div?

Code should be:

var divElem = document.getElementById('scrolling_div');
var chElem = document.getElementById('element_within_div');
var topPos = divElem.offsetTop;
divElem.scrollTop = topPos - chElem.offsetTop;

You want to scroll the difference between child top position and div's top position.

Get access to child elements using:

var divElem = document.getElementById('scrolling_div');
var numChildren = divElem.childNodes.length;

and so on....

store return value of a Python script in a bash script

Do not use sys.exit like this. When called with a string argument, the exit code of your process will be 1, signaling an error condition. The string is printed to standard error to indicate what the error might be. sys.exit is not to be used to provide a "return value" for your script.

Instead, you should simply print the "return value" to standard output using a print statement, then call sys.exit(0), and capture the output in the shell.

Keep only first n characters in a string?

How to print the values of slices

I wrote a package named Pretty Slice. You can use it to visualize slices, and their backing arrays, etc.

package main

import pretty "github.com/inancgumus/prettyslice"

func main() {
    nums := []int{1, 9, 5, 6, 4, 8}
    odds := nums[:3]
    evens := nums[3:]

    nums[1], nums[3] = 9, 6
    pretty.Show("nums", nums)
    pretty.Show("odds : nums[:3]", odds)
    pretty.Show("evens: nums[3:]", evens)
}

This code is going produce and output like this one:

Search for "does-not-contain" on a DataFrame in pandas

You can use the invert (~) operator (which acts like a not for boolean data):

new_df = df[~df["col"].str.contains(word)]

, where new_df is the copy returned by RHS.

contains also accepts a regular expression...

If the above throws a ValueError, the reason is likely because you have mixed datatypes, so use na=False:

new_df = df[~df["col"].str.contains(word, na=False)]

Or,

new_df = df[df["col"].str.contains(word) == False]

How to fix "could not find a base address that matches schema http"... in WCF

The solution is to define a custom binding inside your Web.Config file and set the security mode to "Transport". Then you just need to use the bindingConfiguration property inside your endpoint definition to point to your custom binding.

array filter in python?

If the order is not important, you should use set.difference. However, if you want to retain order, a simple list comprehension is all it takes.

result = [a for a in A if a not in subset_of_A]

EDIT: As delnan says, performance will be substantially improved if subset_of_A is an actual set, since checking for membership in a set is O(1) as compared to O(n) for a list.

A = [6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]
subset_of_A = set([6, 9, 12]) # the subset of A

result = [a for a in A if a not in subset_of_A]

Visual Studio 6 Windows Common Controls 6.0 (sp6) Windows 7, 64 bit

Just today I had the (questionable) pleasure to get VB6 code running on Windows / 64 Bit. I did come across this thread, but none of the proposed solutions worked for me. Neither worked adding references using the "Project -> References..." menu.

To get it running, I had to manually modify the VB6 project file (*.vbp). For all the libraries I had load issue with I had to use the following notation to define as reference: Object={Registry Key}#Version#0; LIBRARY.OCX Example: Object={FAEEE763-117E-101B-8933-08002B2F4F5A}#1.1#0; DBLIST32.OCX

I had not to register any of the libraries (using regsvr32), these were all already correctly registered. I guess why my solution works is that if the "object={[...]" notation is used (instead of the "Reference=*\G{[...]" notation) VB Studio is using the Registry Key only and gets rooted to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 while as the other way ends up looking in C:\Windows\System32

By the way, IE11 is installed. Whether or not this matters, only Bill G might know. My guess is that my solution works regardless which IE is installed. You just might have to unregister and register the missing libraries as mentioned in this thread.

Hope that helps anyone who faces similar issues.

push_back vs emplace_back

emplace_back shouldn't take an argument of type vector::value_type, but instead variadic arguments that are forwarded to the constructor of the appended item.

template <class... Args> void emplace_back(Args&&... args);

It is possible to pass a value_type which will be forwarded to the copy constructor.

Because it forwards the arguments, this means that if you don't have rvalue, this still means that the container will store a "copied" copy, not a moved copy.

 std::vector<std::string> vec;
 vec.emplace_back(std::string("Hello")); // moves
 std::string s;
 vec.emplace_back(s); //copies

But the above should be identical to what push_back does. It is probably rather meant for use cases like:

 std::vector<std::pair<std::string, std::string> > vec;
 vec.emplace_back(std::string("Hello"), std::string("world"));
 // should end up invoking this constructor:
 //template<class U, class V> pair(U&& x, V&& y);
 //without making any copies of the strings

How can I scale an entire web page with CSS?

I have the following code that scales the entire page through CSS properties. The important thing is to set body.style.width to the inverse of the zoom to avoid horizontal scrolling. You must also set transform-origin to top left to keep the top left of the document at the top left of the window.

        var zoom = 1;
        var width = 100;

        function bigger() {
            zoom = zoom + 0.1;
            width = 100 / zoom;
            document.body.style.transformOrigin = "left top";
            document.body.style.transform = "scale(" + zoom + ")";
            document.body.style.width = width + "%";
        }
        function smaller() {
            zoom = zoom - 0.1;
            width = 100 / zoom;
            document.body.style.transformOrigin = "left top";
            document.body.style.transform = "scale(" + zoom + ")";
            document.body.style.width = width + "%";

What is the best place for storing uploaded images, SQL database or disk file system?

I use uploaded images on my website and I would definitely say option a).

One other thing I'd highly recommend is immediately changing the file name from what the user has named the photo, to something more manageable. For example something with the date and time to uniquely identify each picture.

It also helps to strip the user's file name of any strange characters to avoid future complications.

Apache 2.4 - Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error

This problem can be caused by requests for certain files that don't exist. For example, requests for files in wp-content/uploads/ where the file does not exist.

If this is the situation you're seeing, you can solve the problem by going to .htaccess and changing this line:

RewriteRule ^(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) $1 [L]

to:

RewriteRule ^(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) - [L]

The underlying issue is that the rule above triggers a rewrite to the exact same url with a slash in front and because there was a rewrite, the newly rewritten request goes back through the rules again and the same rule is triggered. By changing that line's "$1" to "-", no rewrite happens and so the rewriting process does not start over again with the same URL.

It's possible that there's a difference in how apache 2.2 and 2.4 handle this situation of only-difference-is-a-slash-in-front and that's why the default rules provided by WordPress aren't working perfectly.

MySQL, update multiple tables with one query

When you say multiple queries do you mean multiple SQL statements as in:

UPDATE table1 SET a=b WHERE c;
UPDATE table2 SET a=b WHERE d;
UPDATE table3 SET a=b WHERE e;

Or multiple query function calls as in:

mySqlQuery(UPDATE table1 SET a=b WHERE c;)
mySqlQuery(UPDATE table2 SET a=b WHERE d;)
mySqlQuery(UPDATE table3 SET a=b WHERE e;)

The former can all be done using a single mySqlQuery call if that is what you wanted to achieve, simply call the mySqlQuery function in the following manner:

mySqlQuery(UPDATE table1 SET a=b WHERE c; UPDATE table2 SET a=b WHERE d; UPDATE table3 SET a=b WHERE e;)

This will execute all three queries with one mySqlQuery() call.

Password hash function for Excel VBA

These days, you can leverage the .NET library from VBA. The following works for me in Excel 2016. Returns the hash as uppercase hex.

Public Function SHA1(ByVal s As String) As String
    Dim Enc As Object, Prov As Object
    Dim Hash() As Byte, i As Integer

    Set Enc = CreateObject("System.Text.UTF8Encoding")
    Set Prov = CreateObject("System.Security.Cryptography.SHA1CryptoServiceProvider")

    Hash = Prov.ComputeHash_2(Enc.GetBytes_4(s))

    SHA1 = ""
    For i = LBound(Hash) To UBound(Hash)
        SHA1 = SHA1 & Hex(Hash(i) \ 16) & Hex(Hash(i) Mod 16)
    Next
End Function

Check if decimal value is null

You can also create a handy utility functions to handle values from DB in cases like these. Ex. Below is the function which gives you Nullable Decimal from object type.

    public static decimal? ToNullableDecimal(object val)
    {
        if (val is DBNull ||
            val == null)
        {
            return null;
        }
        if (val is string &&
            ((string)val).Length == 0)
        {
            return null;
        }
        return Convert.ToDecimal(val);
    }

Reversing a String with Recursion in Java

class Test {
   public static void main (String[] args){
      String input = "hello";
      System.out.println(reverse(input));
    }

    private static String reverse(String input) {
        if(input.equals("") || input == null) {
        return "";
    }
    return input.substring(input.length()-1) + reverse(input.substring(0, input.length()-1));
} }

Here is a sample code snippet, this might help you. Worked for me.

go to character in vim

vim +21490go script.py

From the command line will open the file and take you to position 21490 in the buffer.

Triggering it from the command line like this allows you to automate a script to parse the exception message and open the file to the problem position.

Excerpt from man vim:

-c {command}

{command} will be executed after the first file has been read. {command} is interpreted as an Ex command. If the {command} contains spaces it must be enclosed in double quotes (this depends on the shell that is used).

Does VBA have Dictionary Structure?

VBA can use the dictionary structure of Scripting.Runtime.

And its implementation is actually a fancy one - just by doing myDict(x) = y, it checks whether there is a key x in the dictionary and if there is not such, it even creates it. If it is there, it uses it.

And it does not "yell" or "complain" about this extra step, performed "under the hood". Of course, you may check explicitly, whether a key exists with Dictionary.Exists(key). Thus, these 5 lines:

If myDict.exists("B") Then
    myDict("B") = myDict("B") + i * 3
Else
    myDict.Add "B", i * 3
End If

are the same as this 1 liner - myDict("B") = myDict("B") + i * 3. Check it out:

Sub TestMe()

    Dim myDict As Object, i As Long, myKey As Variant
    Set myDict = CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")

    For i = 1 To 3
        Debug.Print myDict.Exists("A")
        myDict("A") = myDict("A") + i
        myDict("B") = myDict("B") + 5
    Next i

    For Each myKey In myDict.keys
        Debug.Print myKey; myDict(myKey)
    Next myKey

End Sub

How to define an optional field in protobuf 3

To expand on @cybersnoopy 's suggestion here

if you had a .proto file with a message like so:

message Request {
    oneof option {
        int64 option_value = 1;
    }
}

You can make use of the case options provided (java generated code):

So we can now write some code as follows:

Request.OptionCase optionCase = request.getOptionCase();
OptionCase optionNotSet = OPTION_NOT_SET;

if (optionNotSet.equals(optionCase)){
    // value not set
} else {
    // value set
}

Change drive in git bash for windows

TL;DR; for Windows users:

(Quotation marks not needed if path has no blank spaces)

Git Bash: cd "/C/Program Files (x86)/Android" // macOS/Linux syntax

Cmd.exe: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Android" // windows syntax

When using git bash on windows, you have to:

  • remove the colon after the drive letter
  • replace your back-slashes with forward-slashes
  • If you have blank spaces in your path: Put quotation marks at beginning and end of the path

Git Bash: cd "/C/Program Files (x86)/Android" // macOS/Linux syntax

Cmd.exe: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Android" // windows syntax

Returning http 200 OK with error within response body

Even if I want to return a business logic error as HTTP code there is no such acceptable HTTP error code for that errors rather than using HTTP 200 because it will misrepresent the actual error.

So, HTTP 200 will be good for business logic errors. But all errors which are covered by HTTP error codes should use them.

Basically HTTP 200 means what server correctly processes user request (in case of there is no seats on the plane it is no matter because user request was correctly processed, it can even return just a number of seats available on the plane, so there will be no business logic errors at all or that business logic can be on client side. Business logic error is an abstract meaning, but HTTP error is more definite).

What does the error "arguments imply differing number of rows: x, y" mean?

Though this isn't a DIRECT answer to your question, I just encountered a similar problem, and thought I'd mentioned it:

I had an instance where it was instantiating a new (no doubt very inefficent) record for data.frame (a result of recursive searching) and it was giving me the same error.

I had this:

return(
  data.frame(
    user_id = gift$email,
    sourced_from_agent_id = gift$source,
    method_used = method,
    given_to = gift$account,
    recurring_subscription_id = NULL,
    notes = notes,
    stringsAsFactors = FALSE
  )
)

turns out... it was the = NULL. When I switched to = NA, it worked fine. Just in case anyone else with a similar problem hits THIS post as I did.

npm - how to show the latest version of a package

You can use:

npm show {pkg} version

(so npm show express version will return now 3.0.0rc3).

Get properties and values from unknown object

You can use GetType - GetProperties - Linq Foreach:

obj.GetType().GetProperties().ToList().ForEach(p =>{
                                                        //p is each PropertyInfo
                                                        DoSomething(p);
                                                    });

HorizontalScrollView within ScrollView Touch Handling

Thank you Joel for giving me a clue on how to resolve this problem.

I have simplified the code(without need for a GestureDetector) to achieve the same effect:

public class VerticalScrollView extends ScrollView {
    private float xDistance, yDistance, lastX, lastY;

    public VerticalScrollView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) {
        super(context, attrs);
    }

    @Override
    public boolean onInterceptTouchEvent(MotionEvent ev) {
        switch (ev.getAction()) {
            case MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN:
                xDistance = yDistance = 0f;
                lastX = ev.getX();
                lastY = ev.getY();
                break;
            case MotionEvent.ACTION_MOVE:
                final float curX = ev.getX();
                final float curY = ev.getY();
                xDistance += Math.abs(curX - lastX);
                yDistance += Math.abs(curY - lastY);
                lastX = curX;
                lastY = curY;
                if(xDistance > yDistance)
                    return false;
        }

        return super.onInterceptTouchEvent(ev);
    }
}

Design DFA accepting binary strings divisible by a number 'n'

You can build DFA using simple modular arithmetics. We can interpret w which is a string of k-ary numbers using a following rule

V[0] = 0
V[i] = (S[i-1] * k) + to_number(str[i])

V[|w|] is a number that w is representing. If modify this rule to find w mod N, the rule becomes this.

V[0] = 0
V[i] = ((S[i-1] * k) + to_number(str[i])) mod N

and each V[i] is one of a number from 0 to N-1, which corresponds to each state in DFA. We can use this as the state transition.

See an example.

k = 2, N = 5

| V | (V*2 + 0) mod 5     | (V*2 + 1) mod 5     |
+---+---------------------+---------------------+
| 0 | (0*2 + 0) mod 5 = 0 | (0*2 + 1) mod 5 = 1 |
| 1 | (1*2 + 0) mod 5 = 2 | (1*2 + 1) mod 5 = 3 |
| 2 | (2*2 + 0) mod 5 = 4 | (2*2 + 1) mod 5 = 0 |
| 3 | (3*2 + 0) mod 5 = 1 | (3*2 + 1) mod 5 = 2 |
| 4 | (4*2 + 0) mod 5 = 3 | (4*2 + 1) mod 5 = 4 |

k = 3, N = 5

| V | 0 | 1 | 2 |
+---+---+---+---+
| 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
| 1 | 3 | 4 | 0 |
| 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| 3 | 4 | 0 | 1 |
| 4 | 2 | 3 | 4 |

Now you can see a very simple pattern. You can actually build a DFA transition just write repeating numbers from left to right, from top to bottom, from 0 to N-1.

Find and replace entire mysql database

Short answer: You can't.

Long answer: You can use the INFORMATION_SCHEMA to get the table definitions and use this to generate the necessary UPDATE statements dynamically. For example you could start with this:

SELECT TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME
FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS
WHERE TABLE_SCHEMA = 'your_schema'

I'd try to avoid doing this though if at all possible.

Elasticsearch query to return all records

this is the query to accomplish what you want, (I am suggesting to use Kibana, as it helps to understand queries better)

GET my_index_name/my_type_name/_search
{
   "query":{
      "match_all":{}
   },
   size : 20,
   from : 3
}

to get all records you have to use "match_all" query.

size is the no of records you want to fetch (kind of limit). by default, ES will only return 10 records

from is like skip, skip first 3 records.

If you want to fetch exactly all the records, just use the value from the "total" field from the result once you hit this query from Kibana and the use it with "size".

What is the garbage collector in Java?

As objects are dynamically allocated by the new operator, you can ask how these objects are destroyed and how busy memory is freed. In other languages such as C++, you need to free manually allocated objects dynamically by the delete operator. Java has a different approach; it automatically handles deallocation. The technique is known as Garbage Collection.

It works like this: when there are no references to an object, it is assumed that this object is no longer needed and you can retrieve the memory occupied by the object. It is not necessary to explicitly destroy objects as in C++. Garbage collection occurs sporadically during program execution; It does not simply happen because there are one or more objects that are no longer used. In addition, several Java runtime implementations have different approaches to garbage collection, but most programmers do not have to worry about this when writing programs.

How to decrypt hash stored by bcrypt

# Maybe you search this ??
For example in my case I use Symfony 4.4 (PHP).
If you want to update User, you need to insert the User password
encrypted and test with the current Password not encrypted to verify
if it's the same User.

For example :

public function updateUser(Request $req)
      {
         $entityManager = $this->getDoctrine()->getManager();
         $repository = $entityManager->getRepository(User::class);
         $user = $repository->find($req->get(id)); /// get User from your DB

         if($user == null){
            throw  $this->createNotFoundException('User don't exist!!', $user);
         }
         $password_old_encrypted = $user->getPassword();//in your DB is always encrypted.
         $passwordToUpdate = $req->get('password'); // not encrypted yet from request.

         $passwordToUpdateEncrypted = password_hash($passwordToUpdate , PASSWORD_DEFAULT);

          ////////////VERIFY IF IT'S THE SAME PASSWORD
         $isPass = password_verify($passwordToUpdateEncrypted , $password_old_encrypted );

         if($isPass === false){ // failure
            throw  $this->createNotFoundException('Your password it's not verify', null);
         }

        return $isPass; //// true!! it's the same password !!!

      }

"The page you are requesting cannot be served because of the extension configuration." error message

In my case I needed to add MIME types for each file extension that I wanted to serve to web config:

<system.webServer>
    <staticContent>
      <mimeMap fileExtension=".shp" mimeType="application/octet-stream" />
      <mimeMap fileExtension=".dbf" mimeType="application/octet-stream" />
      <mimeMap fileExtension=".kml" mimeType="text/xml" />
    </staticContent>
    ...
</system.webServer>

c++ boost split string

My best guess at why you had problems with the ----- covering your first result is that you actually read the input line from a file. That line probably had a \r on the end so you ended up with something like this:

-----------test2-------test3

What happened is the machine actually printed this:

test-------test2-------test3\r-------

That means, because of the carriage return at the end of test3, that the dashes after test3 were printed over the top of the first word (and a few of the existing dashes between test and test2 but you wouldn't notice that because they were already dashes).

How to delete the last row of data of a pandas dataframe

Just use indexing

df.iloc[:-1,:]

That's why iloc exists. You can also use head or tail.

shell init issue when click tab, what's wrong with getcwd?

This usually occurs when your current directory does not exist anymore. Most likely, from another terminal you remove that directory (from within a script or whatever). To get rid of this, in case your current directory was recreated in the meantime, just cd to another (existing) directory and then cd back; the simplest would be: cd; cd -.

Multiple conditions in ngClass - Angular 4

There are multiple ways to write same logic. As it mentioned earlier, you can use object notation or simply expression. However, I think you should not that much logic in HTML. Hard to test and find issue. You can use a getter function to assign the class.

For Instance;

public getCustomCss() {
    //Logic here;
    if(this.x == this.y){
        return 'class1'
    }
    if(this.x == this.z){
        return 'class2'
    }
}
<!-- HTML -->
<div [ngClass]="getCustomCss()"> Some prop</div>

//OR

get customCss() {
    //Logic here;
    if(this.x == this.y){
        return 'class1'
    }
    if(this.x == this.z){
        return 'class2'
    }
}
<!-- HTML -->
<div [ngClass]="customCss"> Some prop</div>

Android button with different background colors

You have to put the selector.xml file in the drwable folder. Then write: android:background="@drawable/selector". This takes care of the pressed and focussed states.

How do I load an HTTP URL with App Transport Security enabled in iOS 9?

See Apple’s Info.plist reference for full details (thanks @gnasher729).

You can add exceptions for specific domains in your Info.plist:

<key>NSAppTransportSecurity</key>
<dict>
    <key>NSExceptionDomains</key>
    <dict>
        <key>testdomain.com</key>
        <dict>
            <key>NSIncludesSubdomains</key>
            <true/>
            <key>NSExceptionAllowsInsecureHTTPLoads</key>
            <true/>
            <key>NSExceptionRequiresForwardSecrecy</key>
            <true/>
            <key>NSExceptionMinimumTLSVersion</key>
            <string>TLSv1.2</string>
            <key>NSThirdPartyExceptionAllowsInsecureHTTPLoads</key>
            <false/>
            <key>NSThirdPartyExceptionRequiresForwardSecrecy</key>
            <true/>
            <key>NSThirdPartyExceptionMinimumTLSVersion</key>
            <string>TLSv1.2</string>
            <key>NSRequiresCertificateTransparency</key>
            <false/>
        </dict>
    </dict>
</dict>

All the keys for each excepted domain are optional. The speaker did not elaborate on any of the keys, but I think they’re all reasonably obvious.

(Source: WWDC 2015 session 703, “Privacy and Your App”, 30:18)

You can also ignore all app transport security restrictions with a single key, if your app has a good reason to do so:

<key>NSAppTransportSecurity</key>
<dict>
    <key>NSAllowsArbitraryLoads</key>
    <true/>
</dict>

If your app does not have a good reason, you may risk rejection:

Setting NSAllowsArbitraryLoads to true will allow it to work, but Apple was very clear in that they intend to reject apps who use this flag without a specific reason. The main reason to use NSAllowsArbitraryLoads I can think of would be user created content (link sharing, custom web browser, etc). And in this case, Apple still expects you to include exceptions that enforce the ATS for the URLs you are in control of.

If you do need access to specific URLs that are not served over TLS 1.2, you need to write specific exceptions for those domains, not use NSAllowsArbitraryLoads set to yes. You can find more info in the NSURLSesssion WWDC session.

Please be careful in sharing the NSAllowsArbitraryLoads solution. It is not the recommended fix from Apple.

Getting "net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT" error on some AJAX calls

I find a case is if your url contains the key word banner, it will blocked too.

"date(): It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings..."

A quick solution whilst your rectify the incompatibilities, is to disable error reporting in your index.php file:

Insert the line below into your index.php below define( ‘_JEXEC’, 1 );

error_reporting( E_ERROR | E_PARSE | E_CORE_ERROR | E_CORE_WARNING | E_COMPILE_ERROR |
E_COMPILE_WARNING );

How to protect Excel workbook using VBA?

I agree with @Richard Morgan ... what you are doing should be working, so more information may be needed.

Microsoft has some suggestions on options to protect your Excel 2003 worksheets.

Here is a little more info ...

From help files (Protect Method):

expression.Protect(Password, Structure, Windows)

expression Required. An expression that returns a Workbook object.

Password Optional Variant. A string that specifies a case-sensitive password for the worksheet or workbook. If this argument is omitted, you can unprotect the worksheet or workbook without using a password. Otherwise, you must specify the password to unprotect the worksheet or workbook. If you forget the password, you cannot unprotect the worksheet or workbook. It's a good idea to keep a list of your passwords and their corresponding document names in a safe place.

Structure Optional Variant. True to protect the structure of the workbook (the relative position of the sheets). The default value is False.

Windows Optional Variant. True to protect the workbook windows. If this argument is omitted, the windows aren’t protected.

ActiveWorkbook.Protect Password:="password", Structure:=True, Windows:=True

If you want to work at the worksheet level, I used something similar years ago when I needed to protect/unprotect:

Sub ProtectSheet()
    ActiveSheet.Protect "password", True, True
End Sub

Sub UnProtectSheet()
    ActiveSheet.Unprotect "password"
End Sub

Sub protectAll()
    Dim myCount
    Dim i
    myCount = Application.Sheets.Count
    Sheets(1).Select
    For i = 1 To myCount
        ActiveSheet.Protect "password", true, true
        If i = myCount Then
            End
        End If
        ActiveSheet.Next.Select
    Next i
End Sub

How to convert integer into date object python?

I would suggest the following simple approach for conversion:

from datetime import datetime, timedelta
s = "20120213"
# you could also import date instead of datetime and use that.
date = datetime(year=int(s[0:4]), month=int(s[4:6]), day=int(s[6:8]))

For adding/subtracting an arbitary amount of days (seconds work too btw.), you could do the following:

date += timedelta(days=10)
date -= timedelta(days=5)

And convert back using:

s = date.strftime("%Y%m%d")

To convert the integer to a string safely, use:

s = "{0:-08d}".format(i)

This ensures that your string is eight charecters long and left-padded with zeroes, even if the year is smaller than 1000 (negative years could become funny though).

How to align an indented line in a span that wraps into multiple lines?

You want multiple lines of text indented on the left. Try the following:

CSS:

div.info {
    margin-left: 10px;
}

span.info {
    color: #b1b1b1;
    font-size: 11px;
    font-style: italic;
    font-weight:bold;
}

HTML:

<div class="info"><span class="info">blah blah <br/> blah blah</span></div>

CSS to stop text wrapping under image

setting display:flexfor the text worked for me.

php static function

In a nutshell, you don't have the object as $this in the second case, as the static method is a function/method of the class not the object instance.

Get full URL and query string in Servlet for both HTTP and HTTPS requests

Simply Use:

String Uri = request.getRequestURL()+"?"+request.getQueryString();

vim - How to delete a large block of text without counting the lines?

You could place your cursor at the beginning or end of the block and enter visual mode (shift-v). Then simply move up or down until the desired block is highlighted. Finally, copy the text by pressing y or cut the text by pressing d.

Now() function with time trim

Paste this function in your Module and use it as like formula

Public Function format_date(t As String)
    format_date = Format(t, "YYYY-MM-DD")
End Function

for example in Cell A1 apply this formula

=format_date(now())

it will return in YYYY-MM-DD format. Change any format (year month date) as your wish.

How to pip install a package with min and max version range?

you can also use:

pip install package==0.5.*

which is more consistent and easy to read.

IF statement: how to leave cell blank if condition is false ("" does not work)

This shall work (modification on above, workaround, not formula)

Modify your original formula: =IF(A1=1,B1,"filler")

Put filter on spreadsheet, choose only "filler" in column B, highlight all the cells with "filler" in them, hit delete, remove filter

Width of input type=text element

input width is 10 + 2 times 1 px for border

Javascript-Setting background image of a DIV via a function and function parameter

You need to concatenate your string.

document.getElementById(tabName).style.backgroundImage = 'url(buttons/' + imagePrefix + '.png)';

The way you had it, it's just making 1 long string and not actually interpreting imagePrefix.

I would even suggest creating the string separate:

function ChangeBackgroungImageOfTab(tabName, imagePrefix)
{
    var urlString = 'url(buttons/' + imagePrefix + '.png)';
    document.getElementById(tabName).style.backgroundImage =  urlString;
}

As mentioned by David Thomas below, you can ditch the double quotes in your string. Here is a little article to get a better idea of how strings and quotes/double quotes are related: http://www.quirksmode.org/js/strings.html

Disable scrolling when touch moving certain element

Git - Won't add files?

Had the same issue with a repo that I cloned from SiteGround Git to my mac. The freshly cloned repo had a list of changed files that git status said needed to be added to the commit, but trying to add or checkout any of them didn't do anything at all.

For some reason there were case changes in the filenames (e.g. .jpg -> .JPG). The solution was to simply git mv the filename the OS was using to the name git was using, e.g.:

git mv File_That_Wont_Add.txt File_THAT_WONT_Add.txt
