Deleting file .condarc (eg./root/.condarc) in the user's home directory before installation, resolved the issue.

TypeError: can't pickle _thread.lock objects

I had the same problem with Pool() in Python 3.6.3.

Error received: TypeError: can't pickle _thread.RLock objects

Let's say we want to add some number num_to_add to each element of some list num_list in parallel. The code is schematically like this:

class DataGenerator:
    def __init__(self, num_list, num_to_add)
        self.num_list = num_list # e.g. [4,2,5,7]
        self.num_to_add = num_to_add # e.g. 1

        self.run()

    def run(self):
        new_num_list = Manager().list()

        pool = Pool(processes=50)
        results = [pool.apply_async(run_parallel, (num, new_num_list))
                      for num in num_list]
        roots = [r.get() for r in results]
        pool.close()
        pool.terminate()
        pool.join()

    def run_parallel(self, num, shared_new_num_list):
        new_num = num + self.num_to_add # uses class parameter
        shared_new_num_list.append(new_num)

The problem here is that self in function run_parallel() can't be pickled as it is a class instance. Moving this parallelized function run_parallel() out of the class helped. But it's not the best solution as this function probably needs to use class parameters like self.num_to_add and then you have to pass it as an argument.

Solution:

def run_parallel(num, shared_new_num_list, to_add): # to_add is passed as an argument
    new_num = num + to_add
    shared_new_num_list.append(new_num)

class DataGenerator:
    def __init__(self, num_list, num_to_add)
        self.num_list = num_list # e.g. [4,2,5,7]
        self.num_to_add = num_to_add # e.g. 1

        self.run()

    def run(self):
        new_num_list = Manager().list()

        pool = Pool(processes=50)
        results = [pool.apply_async(run_parallel, (num, new_num_list, self.num_to_add)) # num_to_add is passed as an argument
                      for num in num_list]
        roots = [r.get() for r in results]
        pool.close()
        pool.terminate()
        pool.join()

Other suggestions above didn't help me.

Multiple Errors Installing Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition

If no other option in this thread works, you can try the steps given in this guide (see below): https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/heaths/2015/07/14/how-to-install-visual-studio-to-another-directory-when-a-pre-release-is-installed/

  1. Download and install http://psmsi.codeplex.com (Note: new site https://github.com/heaths/psmsi) These are general-purpose PowerShell cmdlets I created for all sorts of development and troubleshooting operations for Windows Installer-based installs. You do not need to elevate to install them, though if you pre-elevate you can install them per-machine (by default they are per-user).
  2. Open an elevated PowerShell command prompt and run the following to discover which products have installed the key shared component:

    get-msicomponentinfo '{777CBCAC-12AB-4A57-A753-4A7D23B484D3}' | get-msiproductinfo

  3. If you’re fine with uninstalling all the listed products (especially given that you’re probably going to install RTM next), run the following:

    get-msicomponentinfo '{777CBCAC-12AB-4A57-A753-4A7D23B484D3}' | get-msiproductinfo | uninstall-msiproduct -properties IGNOREDEPENDENCIES=ALL

Personally, this worked for me. I forgot that I had some old files laying around on an old drive, which appearantly later on messed something up in the registry (I think..?). Anyway, with everything clean, it installed just fine!

Note: if you have issues with importing the PSMSI-tools in PowerShell, check this out: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn568022.aspx

In summary, you may need to run the command Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned to be allowed to import the software.

Hope this helps someone in need!

"The system cannot find the file C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java\javapath\java.exe"

  1. Uninstall all JDKs installed on your computer from the Java Control Panel
  2. Search for C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java and delete that directory and all files contained within. You can do this from the command line using rmdir /S C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java
  3. Then search for C:\ProgramData\Oracle and delete the oracle folder. You can do this using rmdir /S C:\ProgramData\Oracle
  4. Now install JDK and set the path.

  5. Run the program.You won't find the same problem anymore.

How to stop VMware port error of 443 on XAMPP Control Panel v3.2.1

Say you let vmware use port 443, and use another ssl port in XAMPP Apache (httpd-ssl.conf) :

The red error will keep popping in XAMPP Control Panel. You also need to change the port in the XAMPP Control Panel configuration :

In XAMPP Control Panel, click the "Config" button (top-left). Then click "Service and Port Settings". There you can set the ports to match the ports used by Apache.

Error Message : Cannot find or open the PDB file

  1. Please check if the setting Generate Debug Info is Yes which under Project Propeties > Configuration Properties > Linker > Debugging tab. If not, try to change it to Yes.

  2. Those perticular pdb's ( for ntdll.dll, mscoree.dll, kernel32.dll, etc ) are for the windows API and shouldn't be needed for simple apps. However, if you cannot find pdb's for your own compiled projects, I suggest making sure the Project Properties > Configuration Properties > Debugging > Working Directory uses the value from Project Properties > Configuration Properties > General > Output Directory .

  3. You need to run Visual c++ in "Run as Administrator" mode.Right click on the executable and click "Run as Administrator"

How to decrypt an encrypted Apple iTunes iPhone backup?

Sorry, but it might even be more complicated, involving pbkdf2, or even a variation of it. Listen to the WWDC 2010 session #209, which mainly talks about the security measures in iOS 4, but also mentions briefly the separate encryption of backups and how they're related.

You can be pretty sure that without knowing the password, there's no way you can decrypt it, even by brute force.

Let's just assume you want to try to enable people who KNOW the password to get to the data of their backups.

I fear there's no way around looking at the actual code in iTunes in order to figure out which algos are employed.

Back in the Newton days, I had to decrypt data from a program and was able to call its decryption function directly (knowing the password, of course) without the need to even undersand its algorithm. It's not that easy anymore, unfortunately.

I'm sure there are skilled people around who could reverse engineer that iTunes code - you just have to get them interested.

In theory, Apple's algos should be designed in a way that makes the data still safe (i.e. practically unbreakable by brute force methods) to any attacker knowing the exact encryption method. And in WWDC session 209 they went pretty deep into details about what they do to accomplish this. Maybe you can actually get answers directly from Apple's security team if you tell them your good intentions. After all, even they should know that security by obfuscation is not really efficient. Try their security mailing list. Even if they do not repond, maybe someone else silently on the list will respond with some help.

Good luck!

How to rotate a div using jQuery

EDIT: Updated for jQuery 1.8

Since jQuery 1.8 browser specific transformations will be added automatically. jsFiddle Demo

var rotation = 0;

jQuery.fn.rotate = function(degrees) {
    $(this).css({'transform' : 'rotate('+ degrees +'deg)'});
    return $(this);
};

$('.rotate').click(function() {
    rotation += 5;
    $(this).rotate(rotation);
});

EDIT: Added code to make it a jQuery function.

For those of you who don't want to read any further, here you go. For more details and examples, read on. jsFiddle Demo.

var rotation = 0;

jQuery.fn.rotate = function(degrees) {
    $(this).css({'-webkit-transform' : 'rotate('+ degrees +'deg)',
                 '-moz-transform' : 'rotate('+ degrees +'deg)',
                 '-ms-transform' : 'rotate('+ degrees +'deg)',
                 'transform' : 'rotate('+ degrees +'deg)'});
    return $(this);
};

$('.rotate').click(function() {
    rotation += 5;
    $(this).rotate(rotation);
});

EDIT: One of the comments on this post mentioned jQuery Multirotation. This plugin for jQuery essentially performs the above function with support for IE8. It may be worth using if you want maximum compatibility or more options. But for minimal overhead, I suggest the above function. It will work IE9+, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and many others.

Bobby... This is for the people who actually want to do it in the javascript. This may be required for rotating on a javascript callback.

Here is a jsFiddle.

If you would like to rotate at custom intervals, you can use jQuery to manually set the css instead of adding a class. Like this! I have included both jQuery options at the bottom of the answer.

HTML

<div class="rotate">
    <h1>Rotatey text</h1>
</div>

CSS

/* Totally for style */
.rotate {
    background: #F02311;
    color: #FFF;
    width: 200px;
    height: 200px;
    text-align: center;
    font: normal 1em Arial;
    position: relative;
    top: 50px;
    left: 50px;
}

/* The real code */
.rotated {
    -webkit-transform: rotate(45deg);  /* Chrome, Safari 3.1+ */
    -moz-transform: rotate(45deg);  /* Firefox 3.5-15 */
    -ms-transform: rotate(45deg);  /* IE 9 */
    -o-transform: rotate(45deg);  /* Opera 10.50-12.00 */
    transform: rotate(45deg);  /* Firefox 16+, IE 10+, Opera 12.10+ */
}

jQuery

Make sure these are wrapped in $(document).ready

$('.rotate').click(function() {
    $(this).toggleClass('rotated');
});

Custom intervals

var rotation = 0;
$('.rotate').click(function() {
    rotation += 5;
    $(this).css({'-webkit-transform' : 'rotate('+ rotation +'deg)',
                 '-moz-transform' : 'rotate('+ rotation +'deg)',
                 '-ms-transform' : 'rotate('+ rotation +'deg)',
                 'transform' : 'rotate('+ rotation +'deg)'});
});

Fitting a density curve to a histogram in R

Such thing is easy with ggplot2

library(ggplot2)
dataset <- data.frame(X = c(rep(65, times=5), rep(25, times=5),
                            rep(35, times=10), rep(45, times=4)))
ggplot(dataset, aes(x = X)) +
  geom_histogram(aes(y = ..density..)) +
  geom_density()

or to mimic the result from Dirk's solution

ggplot(dataset, aes(x = X)) +
  geom_histogram(aes(y = ..density..), binwidth = 5) +

Deleting rows with Python in a CSV file

You are very close; currently you compare the row[2] with integer 0, make the comparison with the string "0". When you read the data from a file, it is a string and not an integer, so that is why your integer check fails currently:

row[2]!="0":

Also, you can use the with keyword to make the current code slightly more pythonic so that the lines in your code are reduced and you can omit the .close statements:

import csv
with open('first.csv', 'rb') as inp, open('first_edit.csv', 'wb') as out:
    writer = csv.writer(out)
    for row in csv.reader(inp):
        if row[2] != "0":
            writer.writerow(row)

Note that input is a Python builtin, so I've used another variable name instead.

Edit: The values in your csv file's rows are comma and space separated; In a normal csv, they would be simply comma separated and a check against "0" would work, so you can either use strip(row[2]) != 0, or check against " 0".

The better solution would be to correct the csv format, but in case you want to persist with the current one, the following will work with your given csv file format:

$ cat test.py
import csv
with open('first.csv', 'rb') as inp, open('first_edit.csv', 'wb') as out:
    writer = csv.writer(out)
    for row in csv.reader(inp):
        if row[2] != " 0":
            writer.writerow(row)
$ cat first.csv
6.5, 5.4, 0, 320
6.5, 5.4, 1, 320
$ python test.py
$ cat first_edit.csv
6.5, 5.4, 1, 320

Understanding offsetWidth, clientWidth, scrollWidth and -Height, respectively

The CSS box model is rather complicated, particularly when it comes to scrolling content. While the browser uses the values from your CSS to draw boxes, determining all the dimensions using JS is not straight-forward if you only have the CSS.

That's why each element has six DOM properties for your convenience: offsetWidth, offsetHeight, clientWidth, clientHeight, scrollWidth and scrollHeight. These are read-only attributes representing the current visual layout, and all of them are integers (thus possibly subject to rounding errors).

Let's go through them in detail:

  • offsetWidth, offsetHeight: The size of the visual box incuding all borders. Can be calculated by adding width/height and paddings and borders, if the element has display: block
  • clientWidth, clientHeight: The visual portion of the box content, not including borders or scroll bars , but includes padding . Can not be calculated directly from CSS, depends on the system's scroll bar size.
  • scrollWidth, scrollHeight: The size of all of the box's content, including the parts that are currently hidden outside the scrolling area. Can not be calculated directly from CSS, depends on the content.

CSS2 Box Model

Try it out: jsFiddle

Since offsetWidth takes the scroll bar width into account, we can use it to calculate the scroll bar width via the formula

scrollbarWidth = offsetWidth - clientWidth - getComputedStyle().borderLeftWidth - getComputedStyle().borderRightWidth

Unfortunately, we may get rounding errors, since offsetWidth and clientWidth are always integers, while the actual sizes may be fractional with zoom levels other than 1.

Note that this

scrollbarWidth = getComputedStyle().width + getComputedStyle().paddingLeft + getComputedStyle().paddingRight - clientWidth

does not work reliably in Chrome, since Chrome returns width with scrollbar already substracted. (Also, Chrome renders paddingBottom to the bottom of the scroll content, while other browsers don't)

android TextView: setting the background color dynamically doesn't work

I had a similar issue where I was creating a numeric color without considering the leading alpha channel. ie. mytext.setTextColor(0xFF0000) (thinking this would be red ). While this is a red color it is also 100% transparent as it = 0x00FF0000; The correct 100% opaque value is 0xFFFF0000 or mytext.setTextcolor(0xFFFF0000).

Javascript: best Singleton pattern

(1) UPDATE 2019: ES7 Version

class Singleton {
    static instance;

    constructor() {
        if (instance) {
            return instance;
        }

        this.instance = this;
    }

    foo() {
        // ...
    }
}

console.log(new Singleton() === new Singleton());

(2) ES6 Version

class Singleton {
    constructor() {
        const instance = this.constructor.instance;
        if (instance) {
            return instance;
        }

        this.constructor.instance = this;
    }

    foo() {
        // ...
    }
}

console.log(new Singleton() === new Singleton());

Best solution found: http://code.google.com/p/jslibs/wiki/JavascriptTips#Singleton_pattern

function MySingletonClass () {

  if (arguments.callee._singletonInstance) {
    return arguments.callee._singletonInstance;
  }

  this.Foo = function () {
    // ...
  };
}

var a = new MySingletonClass();
var b = MySingletonClass();

For those who want the strict version:

(function (global) {
  "use strict";
  var MySingletonClass = function () {

    if (MySingletonClass.prototype._singletonInstance) {
      return MySingletonClass.prototype._singletonInstance;
    }

    MySingletonClass.prototype._singletonInstance = this;

    this.Foo = function() {
      // ...
    };
  };

var a = new MySingletonClass();
var b = MySingletonClass();
global.result = a === b;

} (window));

console.log(result);

What does Statement.setFetchSize(nSize) method really do in SQL Server JDBC driver?

Sounds like mssql jdbc is buffering the entire resultset for you. You can add a connect string parameter saying selectMode=cursor or responseBuffering=adaptive. If you are on version 2.0+ of the 2005 mssql jdbc driver then response buffering should default to adaptive.

Replace first occurrence of string in Python

Use re.sub directly, this allows you to specify a count:

(Note that the order of arguments is replacement, original not the opposite, as might be suspected.)

SFTP in Python? (platform independent)

fsspec is a great option for this, it offers a filesystem like implementation of sftp.

from fsspec.implementations.sftp import SFTPFileSystem
fs = SFTPFileSystem(host=host, username=username, password=password)

# list a directory
fs.ls("/")

# open a file
with fs.open(file_name) as file:
    content = file.read()

Also worth noting that fsspec uses paramiko in the implementation.

Min/Max of dates in an array?

Using Moment, Underscore and jQuery, to iterate an array of dates.

Sample JSON:

"workerList": [{
        "shift_start_dttm": "13/06/2017 20:21",
        "shift_end_dttm": "13/06/2017 23:59"
    }, {
        "shift_start_dttm": "03/04/2018 00:00",
        "shift_end_dttm": "03/05/2018 00:00"
    }]

Javascript:

function getMinStartDttm(workerList) {
    if(!_.isEmpty(workerList)) {
        var startDtArr = [];
        $.each(d.workerList, function(index,value) {
            startDtArr.push(moment(value.shift_start_dttm.trim(), 'DD/MM/YYYY HH:mm'));
         });
         var startDt = _.min(startDtArr);
         return start.format('DD/MM/YYYY HH:mm');
    } else {
        return '';
    }
}

Hope it helps.

The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it

As mentioned here, Dispatcher.Invoke could freeze the UI. Should use Dispatcher.BeginInvoke instead.

Here is a handy extension class to simplify the checking and calling dispatcher invocation.

Sample usage: (call from WPF window)

this Dispatcher.InvokeIfRequired(new Action(() =>
{
    logTextbox.AppendText(message);
    logTextbox.ScrollToEnd();
}));

Extension class:

using System;
using System.Windows.Threading;

namespace WpfUtility
{
    public static class DispatcherExtension
    {
        public static void InvokeIfRequired(this Dispatcher dispatcher, Action action)
        {
            if (dispatcher == null)
            {
                return;
            }
            if (!dispatcher.CheckAccess())
            {
                dispatcher.BeginInvoke(action, DispatcherPriority.ContextIdle);
                return;
            }
            action();
        }
    }
}

CSS Box Shadow - Top and Bottom Only

After some experimentation I found that a fourth value in the line controls the spread (at least in FF 10). I opposed the vertical offsets and gave them a negative spread.

Here's the working pen: http://codepen.io/gillytech/pen/dlbsx

    height: 200px;

    box-shadow:
        inset 0px 11px 8px -10px #CCC,
        inset 0px -11px 8px -10px #CCC;
}

Pass Parameter to Gulp Task

There's an official gulp recipe for this using minimist.

https://github.com/gulpjs/gulp/blob/master/docs/recipes/pass-arguments-from-cli.md

The basics are using minimist to separate the cli arguments and combine them with known options:

var options = minimist(process.argv.slice(2), knownOptions);

Which would parse something like

$ gulp scripts --env development

More complete info in the recipe.

Vim autocomplete for Python

Try Jedi! There's a Vim plugin at https://github.com/davidhalter/jedi-vim.

It works just much better than anything else for Python in Vim. It even has support for renaming, goto, etc. The best part is probably that it really tries to understand your code (decorators, generators, etc. Just look at the feature list).

Bootstrap 3: how to make head of dropdown link clickable in navbar

I know this is a little old, but I recently came across this while looking for a similar solution. Relying on hover events isn't good for responsive design, and especially terrible on mobile/touch screens. I ended up making a small edit to the dropdown.js file the allows you to click the menu item to open the menu and if you click the menu item again it will follow it.

The nice thing about this is it doesn't rely on hover at all and so it still works really nicely on a touch screen.

I've posted it here: https://github.com/mrhanlon/twbs-dropdown-doubletap/blob/master/js/dropdown-doubletap.js

How to change column order in a table using sql query in sql server 2005?

In order to have a specific column order You need to select column by column in the order You wish. Selection order dictates how columns will be ordered in output.

What is the purpose of Looper and how to use it?

Simplest Definition of Looper & Handler:

Looper is a class that turns a thread into a Pipeline Thread and Handler gives you a mechanism to push tasks into it from any other threads.

Details in general wording:

So a PipeLine Thread is a thread which can accept more tasks from other threads through a Handler.

The Looper is named so because it implements the loop – takes the next task, executes it, then takes the next one and so on. The Handler is called a handler because it is used to handle or accept that next task each time from any other thread and pass to Looper (Thread or PipeLine Thread).

Example:

A Looper and Handler or PipeLine Thread's very perfect example is to download more than one images or upload them to a server (Http) one by one in a single thread instead of starting a new Thread for each network call in the background.

How to create a template function within a class? (C++)

The easiest way is to put the declaration and definition in the same file, but it may cause over-sized excutable file. E.g.

class Foo
{
public:
template <typename T> void some_method(T t) {//...}
}

Also, it is possible to put template definition in the separate files, i.e. to put them in .cpp and .h files. All you need to do is to explicitly include the template instantiation to the .cpp files. E.g.

// .h file
class Foo
{
public:
template <typename T> void some_method(T t);
}

// .cpp file
//...
template <typename T> void Foo::some_method(T t)
{//...}
//...

template void Foo::some_method<int>(int);
template void Foo::some_method<double>(double);

How to save data in an android app

In onCreate:

SharedPreferences sharedPref = getSharedPreferences("mySettings", MODE_PRIVATE);

    SharedPreferences.Editor editor = sharedPref.edit();
    editor.putString("mySetting", "Hello Android");
    editor.commit();

How to do an update + join in PostgreSQL?

Let me explain a little more by my example.

Task: correct info, where abiturients (students about to leave secondary school) have submitted applications to university earlier, than they got school certificates (yes, they got certificates earlier, than they were issued (by certificate date specified). So, we will increase application submit date to fit certificate issue date.

Thus. next MySQL-like statement:

UPDATE applications a
JOIN (
    SELECT ap.id, ab.certificate_issued_at
    FROM abiturients ab
    JOIN applications ap
    ON ab.id = ap.abiturient_id
    WHERE ap.documents_taken_at::date < ab.certificate_issued_at
) b
ON a.id = b.id
SET a.documents_taken_at = b.certificate_issued_at;

Becomes PostgreSQL-like in such a way

UPDATE applications a
SET documents_taken_at = b.certificate_issued_at -- we can reference joined table here
FROM abiturients b -- joined table
WHERE
    a.abiturient_id = b.id AND                           -- JOIN ON clause
    a.documents_taken_at::date < b.certificate_issued_at -- Subquery WHERE

As you can see, original subquery JOIN's ON clause have become one of WHERE conditions, which is conjucted by AND with others, which have been moved from subquery with no changes. And there is no more need to JOIN table with itself (as it was in subquery).

What is the default Jenkins password?

I don't believe that the Jenkins user that is installed via apt has a password. If it does, I have never seen documentation. Based on the commands you entered, I am guessing you are using a Debian distro?

Is there any particular reason you must use the jenkins user to do the install instead of the user which was set up when you created your instance?

What is inf and nan?

You say:

when i do nan - inf i dont get -inf i get nan

This is because any operation containing NaN as an operand would return NaN.

A comparison with NaN would return an unordered result.

>>> float('Inf') == float('Inf')
True
>>> float('NaN') == float('NaN')
False

Including external jar-files in a new jar-file build with Ant

From your ant buildfile, I assume that what you want is to create a single JAR archive that will contain not only your application classes, but also the contents of other JARs required by your application.

However your build-jar file is just putting required JARs inside your own JAR; this will not work as explained here (see note).

Try to modify this:

<jar destfile="${jar.file}"
    basedir="${build.dir}"
    manifest="${manifest.file}">
    <fileset dir="${classes.dir}" includes="**/*.class" />
    <fileset dir="${lib.dir}" includes="**/*.jar" />
</jar>

to this:

<jar destfile="${jar.file}"
    basedir="${build.dir}"
    manifest="${manifest.file}">
    <fileset dir="${classes.dir}" includes="**/*.class" />
    <zipgroupfileset dir="${lib.dir}" includes="**/*.jar" />
</jar>

More flexible and powerful solutions are the JarJar or One-Jar projects. Have a look into those if the above does not satisfy your requirements.

Use .corr to get the correlation between two columns

Without actual data it is hard to answer the question but I guess you are looking for something like this:

Top15['Citable docs per Capita'].corr(Top15['Energy Supply per Capita'])

That calculates the correlation between your two columns 'Citable docs per Capita' and 'Energy Supply per Capita'.

To give an example:

import pandas as pd

df = pd.DataFrame({'A': range(4), 'B': [2*i for i in range(4)]})

   A  B
0  0  0
1  1  2
2  2  4
3  3  6

Then

df['A'].corr(df['B'])

gives 1 as expected.

Now, if you change a value, e.g.

df.loc[2, 'B'] = 4.5

   A    B
0  0  0.0
1  1  2.0
2  2  4.5
3  3  6.0

the command

df['A'].corr(df['B'])

returns

0.99586

which is still close to 1, as expected.

If you apply .corr directly to your dataframe, it will return all pairwise correlations between your columns; that's why you then observe 1s at the diagonal of your matrix (each column is perfectly correlated with itself).

df.corr()

will therefore return

          A         B
A  1.000000  0.995862
B  0.995862  1.000000

In the graphic you show, only the upper left corner of the correlation matrix is represented (I assume).

There can be cases, where you get NaNs in your solution - check this post for an example.

If you want to filter entries above/below a certain threshold, you can check this question. If you want to plot a heatmap of the correlation coefficients, you can check this answer and if you then run into the issue with overlapping axis-labels check the following post.

Stripping non printable characters from a string in python

To remove 'whitespace',

import re
t = """
\n\t<p>&nbsp;</p>\n\t<p>&nbsp;</p>\n\t<p>&nbsp;</p>\n\t<p>&nbsp;</p>\n\t<p>
"""
pat = re.compile(r'[\t\n]')
print(pat.sub("", t))

How to get the first 2 letters of a string in Python?

In python strings are list of characters, but they are not explicitly list type, just list-like (i.e. it can be treated like a list). More formally, they're known as sequence (see http://docs.python.org/2/library/stdtypes.html#sequence-types-str-unicode-list-tuple-bytearray-buffer-xrange):

>>> a = 'foo bar'
>>> isinstance(a, list)
False
>>> isinstance(a, str)
True

Since strings are sequence, you can use slicing to access parts of the list, denoted by list[start_index:end_index] see Explain Python's slice notation . For example:

>>> a = [1,2,3,4]
>>> a[0]
1 # first element, NOT a sequence.
>>> a[0:1]
[1] # a slice from first to second, a list, i.e. a sequence.
>>> a[0:2]
[1, 2]
>>> a[:2]
[1, 2]

>>> x = "foo bar"
>>> x[0:2]
'fo'
>>> x[:2]
'fo'

When undefined, the slice notation takes the starting position as the 0, and end position as len(sequence).

In the olden C days, it's an array of characters, the whole issue of dynamic vs static list sounds like legend now, see Python List vs. Array - when to use?

Access non-numeric Object properties by index?

"I'm specifically looking to target the index, just like the first example - if it's possible."

No, it isn't possible.

The closest you can get is to get an Array of the object's keys, and use that:

var keys = Object.keys( obj );

...but there's no guarantee that the keys will be returned in the order you defined. So it could end up looking like:

keys[ 0 ];  // 'evenmore'
keys[ 1 ];  // 'something'

How do write IF ELSE statement in a MySQL query

You're looking for case:

case when action = 2 and state = 0 then 1 else 0 end as state

MySQL has an if syntax (if(action=2 and state=0, 1, 0)), but case is more universal.

Note that the as state there is just aliasing the column. I'm assuming this is in the column list of your SQL query.

Java : Cannot format given Object as a Date

SimpleDateFormat.format(...) takes a Date as parameter and format Date to String. So you need have a look API carefully

Evaluating a mathematical expression in a string

Okay, so the problem with eval is that it can escape its sandbox too easily, even if you get rid of __builtins__. All the methods for escaping the sandbox come down to using getattr or object.__getattribute__ (via the . operator) to obtain a reference to some dangerous object via some allowed object (''.__class__.__bases__[0].__subclasses__ or similar). getattr is eliminated by setting __builtins__ to None. object.__getattribute__ is the difficult one, since it cannot simply be removed, both because object is immutable and because removing it would break everything. However, __getattribute__ is only accessible via the . operator, so purging that from your input is sufficient to ensure eval cannot escape its sandbox.
In processing formulas, the only valid use of a decimal is when it is preceded or followed by [0-9], so we just remove all other instances of ..

import re
inp = re.sub(r"\.(?![0-9])","", inp)
val = eval(inp, {'__builtins__':None})

Note that while python normally treats 1 + 1. as 1 + 1.0, this will remove the trailing . and leave you with 1 + 1. You could add ),, and EOF to the list of things allowed to follow ., but why bother?

Alert after page load

Another option to resolve issue described in OP which I encountered on recent bootcamp training is using window.setTimeout to wrap around the code which is bothersome. My understanding is that it delays the execution of the function for the specified time period (500ms in this case), allowing enough time for the page to load. So, for example:

<script type = "text/javascript">
            window.setTimeout(function(){
                alert("Hello World!");
            }, 500);
</script>

Why doesn't java.util.Set have get(int index)?

Actually this is a recurring question when writing JavaEE applications which use Object-Relational Mapping (for example with Hibernate); and from all the people who replied here, Andreas Petersson is the only one who understood the real issue and offered the correct answer to it: Java is missing a UniqueList! (or you can also call it OrderedSet, or IndexedSet).

Maxwing mentioned this use-case (in which you need ordered AND unique data) and he suggested the SortedSet, but this is not what Marty Pitt really needed.

This "IndexedSet" is NOT the same as a SortedSet - in a SortedSet the elements are sorted by using a Comparator (or using their "natural" ordering).

But instead it is closer to a LinkedHashSet (which others also suggested), or even more so to an (also inexistent) "ArrayListSet", because it guarantees that the elements are returned in the same order as they were inserted.

But the LinkedHashSet is an implementation, not an interface! What is needed is an IndexedSet (or ListSet, or OrderedSet, or UniqueList) interface! This will allow the programmer to specify that he needs a collection of elements that have a specific order and without duplicates, and then instantiate it with any implementation (for example an implementation provided by Hibernate).

Since JDK is open-source, maybe this interface will be finally included in Java 7...

How to return rows from left table not found in right table?

If you are asking for T-SQL then lets look at fundamentals first. There are three types of joins here each with its own set of logical processing phases as:

  1. A cross join is simplest of all. It implements only one logical query processing phase, a Cartesian Product. This phase operates on the two tables provided as inputs to the join and produces a Cartesian product of the two. That is, each row from one input is matched with all rows from the other. So if you have m rows in one table and n rows in the other, you get m×n rows in the result.
  2. Then are Inner joins : They apply two logical query processing phases: A Cartesian product between the two input tables as in a cross join, and then it filters rows based on a predicate that you specify in ON clause (also known as Join condition).
  3. Next comes the third type of joins, Outer Joins:

    In an outer join, you mark a table as a preserved table by using the keywords LEFT OUTER JOIN, RIGHT OUTER JOIN, or FULL OUTER JOIN between the table names. The OUTER keyword is optional. The LEFT keyword means that the rows of the left table are preserved; the RIGHT keyword means that the rows in the right table are preserved; and the FULL keyword means that the rows in both the left and right tables are preserved.

    The third logical query processing phase of an outer join identifies the rows from the preserved table that did not find matches in the other table based on the ON predicate. This phase adds those rows to the result table produced by the first two phases of the join, and uses NULL marks as placeholders for the attributes from the nonpreserved side of the join in those outer rows.

Now if we look at the question: To return records from the left table which are not found in the right table use Left outer join and filter out the rows with NULL values for the attributes from the right side of the join.

How to select specified node within Xpath node sets by index with Selenium?

Here is the solution for index variable

Let's say, you have found 5 elements with same locator and you would like to perform action on each element by providing index number (here, variable is used for index as "i")

for(int i=1; i<=5; i++)
{
    string xPathWithVariable = "(//div[@class='className'])" + "[" + i + "]";
    driver.FindElement(By.XPath(xPathWithVariable)).Click();
}

It takes XPath :

(//div[@class='className'])[1]
(//div[@class='className'])[2]
(//div[@class='className'])[3]
(//div[@class='className'])[4]
(//div[@class='className'])[5]

How do I align a number like this in C?

Why is printf("%8d\n", intval); not working for you? It should...

You did not show the format strings for any of your "not working" examples, so I'm not sure what else to tell you.

#include <stdio.h>

int
main(void)
{
        int i;
        for (i = 1; i <= 10000; i*=10) {
                printf("[%8d]\n", i);
        }
        return (0);
}

$ ./printftest
[       1]
[      10]
[     100]
[    1000]
[   10000]

EDIT: response to clarification of question:

#include <math.h>
int maxval = 1000;
int width = round(1+log(maxval)/log(10));
...
printf("%*d\n", width, intval);

The width calculation computes log base 10 + 1, which gives the number of digits. The fancy * allows you to use the variable for a value in the format string.

You still have to know the maximum for any given run, but there's no way around that in any language or pencil & paper.

What's the difference between @JoinColumn and mappedBy when using a JPA @OneToMany association

The annotation mappedBy ideally should always be used in the Parent side (Company class) of the bi directional relationship, in this case it should be in Company class pointing to the member variable 'company' of the Child class (Branch class)

The annotation @JoinColumn is used to specify a mapped column for joining an entity association, this annotation can be used in any class (Parent or Child) but it should ideally be used only in one side (either in parent class or in Child class not in both) here in this case i used it in the Child side (Branch class) of the bi directional relationship indicating the foreign key in the Branch class.

below is the working example :

parent class , Company

@Entity
public class Company {

    private int companyId;
    private String companyName;
    private List<Branch> branches;

    @Id
    @GeneratedValue
    @Column(name="COMPANY_ID")
    public int getCompanyId() {
        return companyId;
    }

    public void setCompanyId(int companyId) {
        this.companyId = companyId;
    }

    @Column(name="COMPANY_NAME")
    public String getCompanyName() {
        return companyName;
    }

    public void setCompanyName(String companyName) {
        this.companyName = companyName;
    }

    @OneToMany(fetch=FetchType.LAZY,cascade=CascadeType.ALL,mappedBy="company")
    public List<Branch> getBranches() {
        return branches;
    }

    public void setBranches(List<Branch> branches) {
        this.branches = branches;
    }

}

What is cURL in PHP?

cURL is a way you can hit a URL from your code to get a html response from it. cURL means client URL which allows you to connect with other URLs and use their responses in your code.

Convert a file path to Uri in Android

Below code works fine before 18 API :-

public String getRealPathFromURI(Uri contentUri) {

        // can post image
        String [] proj={MediaStore.Images.Media.DATA};
        Cursor cursor = managedQuery( contentUri,
                        proj, // Which columns to return
                        null, // WHERE clause; which rows to return (all rows)
                        null, // WHERE clause selection arguments (none)
                        null); // Order-by clause (ascending by name)
        int column_index = cursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(MediaStore.Images.Media.DATA);
        cursor.moveToFirst();

        return cursor.getString(column_index);
}

below code use on kitkat :-

public static String getPath(final Context context, final Uri uri) {

    final boolean isKitKat = Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.KITKAT;

        // ExternalStorageProvider
        if (isExternalStorageDocument(uri)) {
            final String docId = DocumentsContract.getDocumentId(uri);
            final String[] split = docId.split(":");
            final String type = split[0];

            if ("primary".equalsIgnoreCase(type)) {
                return Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory() + "/" + split[1];
            }

            // TODO handle non-primary volumes
        }
        // DownloadsProvider
        else if (isDownloadsDocument(uri)) {

            final String id = DocumentsContract.getDocumentId(uri);

Difference in System. exit(0) , System.exit(-1), System.exit(1 ) in Java

Zero => Everything Okay

Positive => Something I expected could potentially go wrong went wrong (bad command-line, can't find file, could not connect to server)

Negative => Something I didn't expect at all went wrong (system error - unanticipated exception - externally forced termination e.g. kill -9)

(values greater than 128 are actually negative, if you regard them as 8-bit signed binary, or twos complement)

There's a load of good standard exit-codes here

Convert unix time to readable date in pandas dataframe

Alternatively, by changing a line of the above code:

# df.date = df.date.apply(lambda d: datetime.strptime(d, "%Y-%m-%d"))
df.date = df.date.apply(lambda d: datetime.datetime.fromtimestamp(int(d)).strftime('%Y-%m-%d'))

It should also work.

what is numeric(18, 0) in sql server 2008 r2

This page explains it pretty well.

As a numeric the allowable range that can be stored in that field is -10^38 +1 to 10^38 - 1.

The first number in parentheses is the total number of digits that will be stored. Counting both sides of the decimal. In this case 18. So you could have a number with 18 digits before the decimal 18 digits after the decimal or some combination in between.

The second number in parentheses is the total number of digits to be stored after the decimal. Since in this case the number is 0 that basically means only integers can be stored in this field.

So the range that can be stored in this particular field is -(10^18 - 1) to (10^18 - 1)

Or -999999999999999999 to 999999999999999999 Integers only

Redirecting to previous page after login? PHP

You should probably place the url to redirect to in a POST variable.

Calling async method on button click

This is what's killing you:

task.Wait();

That's blocking the UI thread until the task has completed - but the task is an async method which is going to try to get back to the UI thread after it "pauses" and awaits an async result. It can't do that, because you're blocking the UI thread...

There's nothing in your code which really looks like it needs to be on the UI thread anyway, but assuming you really do want it there, you should use:

private async void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs
{
    Task<List<MyObject>> task = GetResponse<MyObject>("my url");
    var items = await task;
    // Presumably use items here
}

Or just:

private async void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs
{
    var items = await GetResponse<MyObject>("my url");
    // Presumably use items here
}

Now instead of blocking until the task has completed, the Button_Click method will return after scheduling a continuation to fire when the task has completed. (That's how async/await works, basically.)

Note that I would also rename GetResponse to GetResponseAsync for clarity.

ImportError: No module named - Python

This is if you are building a package and you are finding error in imports. I learnt it the hard way.The answer isn't to add the package to python path or to do it programatically (what if your module gets installed and your command adds it again?) thats a bad way.

The right thing to do is: 1) Use virtualenv pyvenv-3.4 or something similar 2) Activate the development mode - $python setup.py develop

Understanding the ngRepeat 'track by' expression

a short summary:

track by is used in order to link your data with the DOM generation (and mainly re-generation) made by ng-repeat.

when you add track by you basically tell angular to generate a single DOM element per data object in the given collection

this could be useful when paging and filtering, or any case where objects are added or removed from ng-repeat list.

usually, without track by angular will link the DOM objects with the collection by injecting an expando property - $$hashKey - into your JavaScript objects, and will regenerate it (and re-associate a DOM object) with every change.

full explanation:

http://www.bennadel.com/blog/2556-using-track-by-with-ngrepeat-in-angularjs-1-2.htm

a more practical guide:

change image opacity using javascript

I'm not sure if you can do this in every browser but you can set the css property of the specified img.
Try to work with jQuery which allows you to make css changes much faster and efficiently.
in jQuery you will have the options of using .animate(),.fadeTo(),.fadeIn(),.hide("slow"),.show("slow") for example.
I mean this CSS snippet should do the work for you:

img
{
opacity:0.4;
filter:alpha(opacity=40); /* For IE8 and earlier */
}

How do I use vim registers?

I was pleased when I discovered the 0 register. If you yank text without assigning it to a particular register, then it will be assigned to the 0 register, as well as being saved in the default " register. The difference between the 0 and " registers is that 0 is only populated with yanked text, whereas the default register is also populated with text deleted using d/D/x/X/c/C/s/S commands.

I find this useful when I want to copy some text, delete something and replace it with the copied text. The following steps illustrate an example:

  • Yank the text you want to copy with y[motion] - this text is saved in " and 0 registers
  • Delete the text you want to replace with d[motion] - this text is saved in " register
  • Paste the yanked text with "0p

where " is the command to use a register for the next command.

On the final step, if you were to paste from the default register (with p), it would use the text that you had just deleted (probably not what you intended).

Note that p or P pastes from the default register. The longhand equivalent would be ""p (or ""P) and "0 holds the last yank, "1holds the last delete or change.

For more info see :help registers.

Dealing with timestamps in R

You want the (standard) POSIXt type from base R that can be had in 'compact form' as a POSIXct (which is essentially a double representing fractional seconds since the epoch) or as long form in POSIXlt (which contains sub-elements). The cool thing is that arithmetic etc are defined on this -- see help(DateTimeClasses)

Quick example:

R> now <- Sys.time()
R> now
[1] "2009-12-25 18:39:11 CST"
R> as.numeric(now)
[1] 1.262e+09
R> now + 10  # adds 10 seconds
[1] "2009-12-25 18:39:21 CST"
R> as.POSIXlt(now)
[1] "2009-12-25 18:39:11 CST"
R> str(as.POSIXlt(now))
 POSIXlt[1:9], format: "2009-12-25 18:39:11"
R> unclass(as.POSIXlt(now))
$sec
[1] 11.79

$min
[1] 39

$hour
[1] 18

$mday
[1] 25

$mon
[1] 11

$year
[1] 109

$wday
[1] 5

$yday
[1] 358

$isdst
[1] 0

attr(,"tzone")
[1] "America/Chicago" "CST"             "CDT"
R>

As for reading them in, see help(strptime)

As for difference, easy too:

R> Jan1 <- strptime("2009-01-01 00:00:00", "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S")
R> difftime(now, Jan1, unit="week")
Time difference of 51.25 weeks
R>

Lastly, the zoo package is an extremely versatile and well-documented container for matrix with associated date/time indices.

How to pass parameter to function using in addEventListener?

No need to pass anything in. The function used for addEventListener will automatically have this bound to the current element. Simply use this in your function:

productLineSelect.addEventListener('change', getSelection, false);

function getSelection() {
    var value = this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;
    alert(value);
}

Here's the fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/dJ4Wm/

If you want to pass arbitrary data to the function, wrap it in your own anonymous function call:

productLineSelect.addEventListener('change', function() {
    foo('bar');
}, false);

function foo(message) {
    alert(message);
}

Here's the fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/t4Gun/

If you want to set the value of this manually, you can use the call method to call the function:

var self = this;
productLineSelect.addEventListener('change', function() {
    getSelection.call(self);
    // This'll set the `this` value inside of `getSelection` to `self`
}, false);

function getSelection() {
    var value = this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;
    alert(value);
}

How to downgrade to older version of Gradle

I did following steps to downgrade Gradle back to the original version:

  • I deleted content of '.gradle/caches' folder in user home directory (windows).
  • I deleted content of '.gradle' folder in my project root.
  • I checked that Gradle version is properly set in 'Project' option of 'Project Structure' in Android Studio.
  • I selected 'Use default gradle wrapper' option in 'Settings' in Android Studio, just search for gradle key word to find it.

Probably last step is enough as in my case the path to the new Gradle distribution was hardcoded there under 'Gradle home' option.

Saving any file to in the database, just convert it to a byte array?

Since it's not mentioned what database you mean I'm assuming SQL Server. Below solution works for both 2005 and 2008.

You have to create table with VARBINARY(MAX) as one of the columns. In my example I've created Table Raporty with column RaportPlik being VARBINARY(MAX) column.

Method to put file into database from drive:

public static void databaseFilePut(string varFilePath) {
    byte[] file;
    using (var stream = new FileStream(varFilePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)) {
        using (var reader = new BinaryReader(stream)) {
            file = reader.ReadBytes((int) stream.Length);
        }
    }
    using (var varConnection = Locale.sqlConnectOneTime(Locale.sqlDataConnectionDetails))
    using (var sqlWrite = new SqlCommand("INSERT INTO Raporty (RaportPlik) Values(@File)", varConnection)) {
        sqlWrite.Parameters.Add("@File", SqlDbType.VarBinary, file.Length).Value = file;
        sqlWrite.ExecuteNonQuery();
    }
}

This method is to get file from database and save it on drive:

public static void databaseFileRead(string varID, string varPathToNewLocation) {
    using (var varConnection = Locale.sqlConnectOneTime(Locale.sqlDataConnectionDetails))
    using (var sqlQuery = new SqlCommand(@"SELECT [RaportPlik] FROM [dbo].[Raporty] WHERE [RaportID] = @varID", varConnection)) {
        sqlQuery.Parameters.AddWithValue("@varID", varID);
        using (var sqlQueryResult = sqlQuery.ExecuteReader())
            if (sqlQueryResult != null) {
                sqlQueryResult.Read();
                var blob = new Byte[(sqlQueryResult.GetBytes(0, 0, null, 0, int.MaxValue))];
                sqlQueryResult.GetBytes(0, 0, blob, 0, blob.Length);
                using (var fs = new FileStream(varPathToNewLocation, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write))
                    fs.Write(blob, 0, blob.Length);
            }
    }
}

This method is to get file from database and put it as MemoryStream:

public static MemoryStream databaseFileRead(string varID) {
    MemoryStream memoryStream = new MemoryStream();
    using (var varConnection = Locale.sqlConnectOneTime(Locale.sqlDataConnectionDetails))
    using (var sqlQuery = new SqlCommand(@"SELECT [RaportPlik] FROM [dbo].[Raporty] WHERE [RaportID] = @varID", varConnection)) {
        sqlQuery.Parameters.AddWithValue("@varID", varID);
        using (var sqlQueryResult = sqlQuery.ExecuteReader())
            if (sqlQueryResult != null) {
                sqlQueryResult.Read();
                var blob = new Byte[(sqlQueryResult.GetBytes(0, 0, null, 0, int.MaxValue))];
                sqlQueryResult.GetBytes(0, 0, blob, 0, blob.Length);
                //using (var fs = new MemoryStream(memoryStream, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write)) {
                memoryStream.Write(blob, 0, blob.Length);
                //}
            }
    }
    return memoryStream;
}

This method is to put MemoryStream into database:

public static int databaseFilePut(MemoryStream fileToPut) {
        int varID = 0;
        byte[] file = fileToPut.ToArray();
        const string preparedCommand = @"
                    INSERT INTO [dbo].[Raporty]
                               ([RaportPlik])
                         VALUES
                               (@File)
                        SELECT [RaportID] FROM [dbo].[Raporty]
            WHERE [RaportID] = SCOPE_IDENTITY()
                    ";
        using (var varConnection = Locale.sqlConnectOneTime(Locale.sqlDataConnectionDetails))
        using (var sqlWrite = new SqlCommand(preparedCommand, varConnection)) {
            sqlWrite.Parameters.Add("@File", SqlDbType.VarBinary, file.Length).Value = file;

            using (var sqlWriteQuery = sqlWrite.ExecuteReader())
                while (sqlWriteQuery != null && sqlWriteQuery.Read()) {
                    varID = sqlWriteQuery["RaportID"] is int ? (int) sqlWriteQuery["RaportID"] : 0;
                }
        }
        return varID;
    }

Happy coding :-)

How to convert an array into an object using stdClass()

If you want to recursively convert the entire array into an Object type (stdClass) then , below is the best method and it's not time-consuming or memory deficient especially when you want to do a recursive (multi-level) conversion compared to writing your own function.

$array_object = json_decode(json_encode($array));

What does a Status of "Suspended" and high DiskIO means from sp_who2?

This is a very broad question, so I am going to give a broad answer.

  1. A query gets suspended when it is requesting access to a resource that is currently not available. This can be a logical resource like a locked row or a physical resource like a memory data page. The query starts running again, once the resource becomes available.
  2. High disk IO means that a lot of data pages need to be accessed to fulfill the request.

That is all that I can tell from the above screenshot. However, if I were to speculate, you probably have an IO subsystem that is too slow to keep up with the demand. This could be caused by missing indexes or an actually too slow disk. Keep in mind, that 15000 reads for a single OLTP query is slightly high but not uncommon.

Breaking out of a for loop in Java

public class Test {

public static void main(String args[]) {

  for(int x = 10; x < 20; x = x+1) {
     if(x==15)
         break;
     System.out.print("value of x : " + x );
     System.out.print("\n");
  }
}
}

Bash integer comparison

I know this has been answered, but here's mine just because I think case is an under-appreciated tool. (Maybe because people think it is slow, but it's at least as fast as an if, sometimes faster.)

How to call Stored Procedure in Entity Framework 6 (Code-First)?

When EDMX create this time if you select stored procedured in table select option then just call store procedured using procedured name...

var num1 = 1;
var num2 = 2;

var result = context.proc_name(num1,num2).tolist();// list or single you get here.. using same thing you can call insert,update or delete procedured.

By placing this conf file there you hook into ubuntu's upstart service that runs services on startup.

manual starting/stopping is done with sudo service mystartupscript start and sudo service mystartupscript stop

Border length smaller than div width?

I did something like this in my project. I would like to share it here. You can add another div as a child and give it a border with small width and place it left, centre or right with usual CSS

HTML code:

    <div>
        content
        <div class ="ac-brdr"></div>
    </div>

CSS as below:

   .active {
    color: magneta;
  }
   .active .ac-brdr {
        width: 20px;
        margin: 0 auto;
        border-bottom: 1px solid magneta;
  }

How to Toggle a div's visibility by using a button click

Try following logic:

<script type="text/javascript">
function showHideDiv(id) {
    var e = document.getElementById(id);
    if(e.style.display == null || e.style.display == "none") {
        e.style.display = "block";
    } else {
        e.style.display = "none";
    }
}
</script>

Is there a replacement for unistd.h for Windows (Visual C)?

Try including the io.h file. It seems to be the Visual Studio's equivalent of unistd.h.

I hope this helps.

HTML5 Canvas Rotate Image

As @markE mention in his answer

the alternative is to untranslate & unrotate after drawing

It is much faster than context save and restore.

Here is an example

// translate and rotate
this.context.translate(x,y);
this.context.rotate(radians);
this.context.translate(-x,-y);

this.context.drawImage(...);

// untranslate and unrotate
this.context.translate(x, y);
this.context.rotate(-radians);
this.context.translate(-x,-y);

Publish to IIS, setting Environment Variable

Just add <EnvironmentName> to your publish profile and be done with it:

<PropertyGroup>
  <EnvironmentName>Development</EnvironmentName>
</PropertyGroup>

That information gets copied to web.config. (Don't set web.config manually since it gets overwritten.)

I was not able to install cv2 on Anaconda-Jupyter notebook running on Ubuntu on Google Cloud Platform. But I found a way to do it as follows:

Run the following command from the ssh terminal and follow the instruction:

 sudo apt-get install libsm6 libxrender1 libfontconfig1

Once its installed Open the Jupyter notebook and run following command:

!pip install opencv-contrib-python

Note: I tried to run this command: "sudo python3 -m pip install opencv-contrib-python"but it was showing an error. But above command worked for me.

Now refresh the notebook page and check whether it's installed or not by running import cv2 in the notebook.

I have 2 dates in PHP, how can I run a foreach loop to go through all of those days?

If you use Laravel and want to use Carbon the correct solution would be the following:

$start_date = Carbon::createFromFormat('Y-m-d', '2020-01-01');
$end_date = Carbon::createFromFormat('Y-m-d', '2020-01-31');

$period = new CarbonPeriod($start_date, '1 day', $end_date);

foreach ($period as $dt) {
 echo $dt->format("l Y-m-d H:i:s\n");
}

Remember to add:

  • use Carbon\Carbon;
  • use Carbon\CarbonPeriod;

and it worked for me.

Reading an Excel file in python using pandas

Thought i should add here, that if you want to access rows or columns to loop through them, you do this:

import pandas as pd

# open the file
xlsx = pd.ExcelFile("PATH\FileName.xlsx")

# get the first sheet as an object
sheet1 = xlsx.parse(0)

# get the first column as a list you can loop through
# where the is 0 in the code below change to the row or column number you want
column = sheet1.icol(0).real

# get the first row as a list you can loop through
row = sheet1.irow(0).real

Edit:

The methods icol(i) and irow(i) are deprecated now. You can use sheet1.iloc[:,i] to get the i-th col and sheet1.iloc[i,:] to get the i-th row.

Generate Java class from JSON?

Answering this old question with recent project ;-).

At the moment the best solution is probably JsonSchema2Pojo :

It does the job from the seldom used Json Schema but also with plain Json. It provides Ant and Maven plugin and an online test application can give you an idea of the tool. I put a Json Tweet and generated all the containing class (Tweet, User, Location, etc..).

We'll use it on Agorava project to generate Social Media mapping and follow the contant evolution in their API.

How to convert these strange characters? (ë, Ã, ì, ù, Ã)

I actually found something that worked for me. It converts the text to binary and then to UTF8.

Source Text that has encoding issues: If ‘Yes’, what was your last

SELECT CONVERT(CAST(CONVERT(
    (SELECT CONVERT(CAST(CONVERT(english_text USING LATIN1) AS BINARY) USING UTF8) AS res FROM m_translation WHERE id = 865)
USING LATIN1) AS BINARY) USING UTF8) AS 'result';

Corrected Result text: If ‘Yes’, what was your last

My source was wrongly encoded twice so I had two do it twice. For one time you can use:

SELECT CONVERT(CAST(CONVERT(column_name USING latin1) AS BINARY) USING UTF8) AS res FROM m_translation WHERE id = 865;

Please excuse me for any formatting mistakes

Is it possible in Java to check if objects fields are null and then add default value to all those attributes?

You need to manually filter input to constructors and setters. Well... you could use reflection but I wouldn't advise it. Part of the job of constructors and setters is to validate input. That can include things like:

public void setPrice(double price) {
  if (price < 0.0d) {
    throw new IllegalArgumentException("price cannot be negative " + price);
  }
  this.price = price;
}

and

public void setName(String name) {
  if (name == null) {
    throw new NullPointerException("name cannot be null");
  }
  this.name = name;
}

You could use wrapper functions for the actual check and throwing the exception.

How do I make an asynchronous GET request in PHP?

Based on this thread I made this for my codeigniter project. It works just fine. You can have any function processed in the background.

A controller that accepts the async calls.

class Daemon extends CI_Controller
{
    // Remember to disable CI's csrf-checks for this controller

    function index( )
    {
        ignore_user_abort( 1 );
        try
        {
            if ( strcmp( $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'], $_SERVER['SERVER_ADDR'] ) != 0 && !in_array( $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'], $this->config->item( 'proxy_ips' ) ) )
            {
                log_message( "error", "Daemon called from untrusted IP-address: " . $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] );
                show_404( '/daemon' );
                return;
            }

            $this->load->library( 'encrypt' );
            $params = unserialize( urldecode( $this->encrypt->decode( $_POST['data'] ) ) );
            unset( $_POST );
            $model = array_shift( $params );
            $method = array_shift( $params );
            $this->load->model( $model );
            if ( call_user_func_array( array( $this->$model, $method ), $params ) === FALSE )
            {
                log_message( "error", "Daemon could not call: " . $model . "::" . $method . "()" );
            }
        }
        catch(Exception $e)
        {
            log_message( "error", "Daemon has error: " . $e->getMessage( ) . $e->getFile( ) . $e->getLine( ) );
        }
    }
}

And a library that does the async calls

class Daemon
{
    public function execute_background( /* model, method, params */ )
    {
        $ci = &get_instance( );
        // The callback URL (its ourselves)
        $parts = parse_url( $ci->config->item( 'base_url' ) . "/daemon" );
        if ( strcmp( $parts['scheme'], 'https' ) == 0 )
        {
            $port = 443;
            $host = "ssl://" . $parts['host'];
        }
        else
        {
            $port = 80;
            $host = $parts['host'];
        }
        if ( ( $fp = fsockopen( $host, isset( $parts['port'] ) ? $parts['port'] : $port, $errno, $errstr, 30 ) ) === FALSE )
        {
            throw new Exception( "Internal server error: background process could not be started" );
        }
        $ci->load->library( 'encrypt' );
        $post_string = "data=" . urlencode( $ci->encrypt->encode( serialize( func_get_args( ) ) ) );
        $out = "POST " . $parts['path'] . " HTTP/1.1\r\n";
        $out .= "Host: " . $host . "\r\n";
        $out .= "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded\r\n";
        $out .= "Content-Length: " . strlen( $post_string ) . "\r\n";
        $out .= "Connection: Close\r\n\r\n";
        $out .= $post_string;
        fwrite( $fp, $out );
        fclose( $fp );
    }
}

This method can be called to process any model::method() in the 'background'. It uses variable arguments.

$this->load->library('daemon');
$this->daemon->execute_background( 'model', 'method', $arg1, $arg2, ... );

What is the difference between SAX and DOM?

Both SAX and DOM are used to parse the XML document. Both has advantages and disadvantages and can be used in our programming depending on the situation

SAX:

  1. Parses node by node

  2. Does not store the XML in memory

  3. We cant insert or delete a node

  4. Top to bottom traversing

DOM

  1. Stores the entire XML document into memory before processing

  2. Occupies more memory

  3. We can insert or delete nodes

  4. Traverse in any direction.

If we need to find a node and does not need to insert or delete we can go with SAX itself otherwise DOM provided we have more memory.

Deleting a local branch with Git

If you have created multiple worktrees with git worktree, you'll need to run git prune before you can delete the branch

JPA Criteria API - How to add JOIN clause (as general sentence as possible)

Maybe the following extract from the Chapter 23 - Using the Criteria API to Create Queries of the Java EE 6 tutorial will throw some light (actually, I suggest reading the whole Chapter 23):

Querying Relationships Using Joins

For queries that navigate to related entity classes, the query must define a join to the related entity by calling one of the From.join methods on the query root object, or another join object. The join methods are similar to the JOIN keyword in JPQL.

The target of the join uses the Metamodel class of type EntityType<T> to specify the persistent field or property of the joined entity.

The join methods return an object of type Join<X, Y>, where X is the source entity and Y is the target of the join.

Example 23-10 Joining a Query

CriteriaQuery<Pet> cq = cb.createQuery(Pet.class);
Metamodel m = em.getMetamodel();
EntityType<Pet> Pet_ = m.entity(Pet.class);

Root<Pet> pet = cq.from(Pet.class);
Join<Pet, Owner> owner = pet.join(Pet_.owners);

Joins can be chained together to navigate to related entities of the target entity without having to create a Join<X, Y> instance for each join.

Example 23-11 Chaining Joins Together in a Query

CriteriaQuery<Pet> cq = cb.createQuery(Pet.class);
Metamodel m = em.getMetamodel();
EntityType<Pet> Pet_ = m.entity(Pet.class);
EntityType<Owner> Owner_ = m.entity(Owner.class);

Root<Pet> pet = cq.from(Pet.class);
Join<Owner, Address> address = cq.join(Pet_.owners).join(Owner_.addresses);

That being said, I have some additional remarks:

First, the following line in your code:

Root entity_ = cq.from(this.baseClass);

Makes me think that you somehow missed the Static Metamodel Classes part. Metamodel classes such as Pet_ in the quoted example are used to describe the meta information of a persistent class. They are typically generated using an annotation processor (canonical metamodel classes) or can be written by the developer (non-canonical metamodel). But your syntax looks weird, I think you are trying to mimic something that you missed.

Second, I really think you should forget this assay_id foreign key, you're on the wrong path here. You really need to start to think object and association, not tables and columns.

Third, I'm not really sure to understand what you mean exactly by adding a JOIN clause as generical as possible and what your object model looks like, since you didn't provide it (see previous point). It's thus just impossible to answer your question more precisely.

To sum up, I think you need to read a bit more about JPA 2.0 Criteria and Metamodel API and I warmly recommend the resources below as a starting point.

MySQL Orderby a number, Nulls last

MySQL has an undocumented syntax to sort nulls last. Place a minus sign (-) before the column name and switch the ASC to DESC:

SELECT * FROM tablename WHERE visible=1 ORDER BY -position DESC, id DESC

It is essentially the inverse of position DESC placing the NULL values last but otherwise the same as position ASC.

How do I return a proper success/error message for JQuery .ajax() using PHP?

Some people recommend using HTTP status codes, but I rather despise that practice. e.g. If you're doing a search engine and the provided keywords have no results, the suggestion would be to return a 404 error.

However, I consider that wrong. HTTP status codes apply to the actual browser<->server connection. Everything about the connect went perfectly. The browser made a request, the server invoked your handler script. The script returned 'no rows'. Nothing in that signifies "404 page not found" - the page WAS found.

Instead, I favor divorcing the HTTP layer from the status of your server-side operations. Instead of simply returning some text in a json string, I always return a JSON data structure which encapsulates request status and request results.

e.g. in PHP you'd have

$results = array(
   'error' => false,
   'error_msg' => 'Everything A-OK',
   'data' => array(....results of request here ...)
);
echo json_encode($results);

Then in your client-side code you'd have

if (!data.error) {
   ... got data, do something with it ...
} else {
   ... invoke error handler ...
}

How to send PUT, DELETE HTTP request in HttpURLConnection?

public  HttpURLConnection getHttpConnection(String url, String type){
        URL uri = null;
        HttpURLConnection con = null;
        try{
            uri = new URL(url);
            con = (HttpURLConnection) uri.openConnection();
            con.setRequestMethod(type); //type: POST, PUT, DELETE, GET
            con.setDoOutput(true);
            con.setDoInput(true);
            con.setConnectTimeout(60000); //60 secs
            con.setReadTimeout(60000); //60 secs
            con.setRequestProperty("Accept-Encoding", "Your Encoding");
            con.setRequestProperty("Content-Type", "Your Encoding");
        }catch(Exception e){
            logger.info( "connection i/o failed" );
        }
        return con;
}

Then in your code :

public void yourmethod(String url, String type, String reqbody){
    HttpURLConnection con = null;
    String result = null;
    try {
        con = conUtil.getHttpConnection( url , type);

                con.setDoOutput(true);
                DataOutputStream out = new  DataOutputStream(con.getOutputStream());
                out.writeBytes(reqbody);
                out.flush();
                out.close();
            }
        con.connect();

        String temp = null;
        StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();

            sb.append(temp).append(" ");
        }
        result = sb.toString();
        in.close();
    } catch (IOException e) {
        // TODO Auto-generated catch block
        e.printStackTrace();
        logger.error(e.getMessage());
    }
//result is the response you get from the remote side

How to plot a very simple bar chart (Python, Matplotlib) using input *.txt file?

You're talking about histograms, but this doesn't quite make sense. Histograms and bar charts are different things. An histogram would be a bar chart representing the sum of values per year, for example. Here, you just seem to be after bars.

Here is a complete example from your data that shows a bar of for each required value at each date:

values = []
dates = []

for line in data.split("\n"):
    x, y = line.split()
    values.append(int(x))
    dates.append(datetime.datetime.strptime(y, "%d-%m-%Y").date())

fig = pl.figure()
ax = pl.subplot(111)
ax.bar(dates, values, width=100)
ax.xaxis_date()

You need to parse the date with strptime and set the x-axis to use dates (as described in this answer).

If you're not interested in having the x-axis show a linear time scale, but just want bars with labels, you can do this instead:

fig = pl.figure()
ax = pl.subplot(111)
ax.bar(range(len(dates)), values)

EDIT: Following comments, for all the ticks, and for them to be centred, pass the range to set_ticks (and move them by half the bar width):

fig = pl.figure()
ax = pl.subplot(111)
width=0.8
ax.bar(range(len(dates)), values, width=width)
ax.set_xticks(np.arange(len(dates)) + width/2)
ax.set_xticklabels(dates, rotation=90)

remove first element from array and return the array minus the first element

This should remove the first element, and then you can return the remaining:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var myarray = ["item 1", "item 2", "item 3", "item 4"];_x000D_
    _x000D_
myarray.shift();_x000D_
alert(myarray);
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

As others have suggested, you could also use slice(1);

_x000D_
_x000D_
var myarray = ["item 1", "item 2", "item 3", "item 4"];_x000D_
  _x000D_
alert(myarray.slice(1));
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

How can I render inline JavaScript with Jade / Pug?

THIRD VERSION OF MY ANSWER:

Here's a multiple line example of inline Jade Javascript. I don't think you can write it without using a -. This is a flash message example that I use in a partial. Hope this helps!

-if(typeof(info) !== 'undefined')
  -if (info)
    - if(info.length){
      ul
        -info.forEach(function(info){
          li= info
      -})
  -}

Is the code you're trying to get to compile the code in your question?

If so, you don't need two things: first, you don't need to declare that it's Javascript/a script, you can just started coding after typing -; second, after you type -if you don't need to type the { or } either. That's what makes Jade pretty sweet.

--------------ORIGINAL ANSWER BELOW ---------------

Try prepending if with -:

-if(10 == 10)
  //do whatever you want here as long as it's indented two spaces from
   the `-` above

There are also tons of Jade examples at:

https://github.com/visionmedia/jade/blob/master/examples/

Remove special symbols and extra spaces and replace with underscore using the replace method

var str = "hello world & hello universe"

In order to replace both Spaces and Symbols in one shot, we can use the below regex code.

str.replaceAll("\\W+","")

Note: \W -> represents Not Words (includes spaces/special characters) | + -> one or many matches

How do I return a string from a regex match in python?

Note that re.match(pattern, string, flags=0) only returns matches at the beginning of the string. If you want to locate a match anywhere in the string, use re.search(pattern, string, flags=0) instead (https://docs.python.org/3/library/re.html). This will scan the string and return the first match object. Then you can extract the matching string with match_object.group(0) as the folks suggested.

Process to convert simple Python script into Windows executable

I would join @Nicholas in recommending PyInstaller (with the --onefile flag), but be warned: do not use the "latest release", PyInstaller 1.3 -- it's years old. Use the "pre-release" 1.4, download it here -- or even better the code from the svn repo -- install SVN and run svn co http://svn.pyinstaller.org/trunk pyinstaller.

As @Nicholas implies, dynamic libraries cannot be run from the same file as the rest of the executable -- but fortunately they can be packed together with all the rest in a "self-unpacking" executable that will unpack itself into some temporary directory as needed; PyInstaller does a good job at this (and at many other things -- py2exe is more popular, but pyinstaller in my opinion is preferable in all other respects).

What are the benefits of learning Vim?

I learned to like vi after watching someone who was very skilled with it navigate around to make edits at an insanely fast clip. You really can code quickly with it. Another reason I like it is that sometimes I find that mousing around in an IDE really hurts my hands after a while and vi provides a nice change. As others have mentioned it's also almost always available on unix systems and works well even over lousy connections.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is that knowing vi has the added benefit of "geek cred" in some circles. I can think of at least a few people who chuckle when they see a new programmer fire up nedit to make some changes to a file.

How to search for string in an array

If you want to know if the string is found in the array at all, try this function:

Function IsInArray(stringToBeFound As String, arr As Variant) As Boolean
  IsInArray = (UBound(Filter(arr, stringToBeFound)) > -1)
End Function

As SeanC points out, this must be a 1-D array.

Example:

Sub Test()
  Dim arr As Variant
  arr = Split("abc,def,ghi,jkl", ",")
  Debug.Print IsInArray("ghi", arr)
End Sub

(Below code updated based on comment from HansUp)

If you want the index of the matching element in the array, try this:

Function IsInArray(stringToBeFound As String, arr As Variant) As Long
  Dim i As Long
  ' default return value if value not found in array
  IsInArray = -1

  For i = LBound(arr) To UBound(arr)
    If StrComp(stringToBeFound, arr(i), vbTextCompare) = 0 Then
      IsInArray = i
      Exit For
    End If
  Next i
End Function

This also assumes a 1-D array. Keep in mind LBound and UBound are zero-based so an index of 2 means the third element, not the second.

Example:

Sub Test()
  Dim arr As Variant
  arr = Split("abc,def,ghi,jkl", ",")
  Debug.Print (IsInArray("ghi", arr) > -1)
End Sub

If you have a specific example in mind, please update your question with it, otherwise example code might not apply to your situation.

Getting RSA private key from PEM BASE64 Encoded private key file

You've just published that private key, so now the whole world knows what it is. Hopefully that was just for testing.

EDIT: Others have noted that the openssl text header of the published key, -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----, indicates that it is PKCS#1. However, the actual Base64 contents of the key in question is PKCS#8. Evidently the OP copy and pasted the header and trailer of a PKCS#1 key onto the PKCS#8 key for some unknown reason. The sample code I've provided below works with PKCS#8 private keys.

Here is some code that will create the private key from that data. You'll have to replace the Base64 decoding with your IBM Base64 decoder.

public class RSAToy {

    private static final String BEGIN_RSA_PRIVATE_KEY = "-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----\n"
            + "MIIEuwIBADAN ...skipped the rest\n"
         // + ...
         // + ... skipped the rest
         // + ...
            + "-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----";

    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {

        // Remove the first and last lines

        String privKeyPEM = BEGIN_RSA_PRIVATE_KEY.replace("-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----\n", "");
        privKeyPEM = privKeyPEM.replace("-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----", "");
        System.out.println(privKeyPEM);

        // Base64 decode the data

        byte [] encoded = Base64.decode(privKeyPEM);

        // PKCS8 decode the encoded RSA private key

        PKCS8EncodedKeySpec keySpec = new PKCS8EncodedKeySpec(encoded);
        KeyFactory kf = KeyFactory.getInstance("RSA");
        PrivateKey privKey = kf.generatePrivate(keySpec);

        // Display the results

        System.out.println(privKey);
    }
}

How can I change the default credentials used to connect to Visual Studio Online (TFSPreview) when loading Visual Studio up?

You need to remove TFS credentials from Windows Vault to clear and force to ask new TFS credentials in Visual Studio

  1. Go to Control Panel (Start -> Control Panel).

  2. Click User Accounts ( or User Accounts and Family Safety->User Accounts in Windows 7 Machine)

  3. Click Credential Manager (or Manage your credentials)

  4. In Credential Manager page, you can see the two type of credentials

       i. Windows Credentials
       ii. Generic Credentials

5.Click on two credentials modify link, click the link Remove from vault to remove stored TFS credentials.

Now, When you login into Visual Studio you will be asked to give credentials to connect TFS.

Note: Don't forgot to uncheck the option Remember my credentials to force to ask credentials for every TFS connections.

JavaScript: filter() for Objects

How about:

function filterObj(keys, obj) {
  const newObj = {};
  for (let key in obj) {
    if (keys.includes(key)) {
      newObj[key] = obj[key];
    }
  }
  return newObj;
}

Or...

function filterObj(keys, obj) {
  const newObj = {};
  Object.keys(obj).forEach(key => {
    if (keys.includes(key)) {
      newObj[key] = obj[key];
    }
  });
  return newObj;
}

Using Application context everywhere?

I would use Application Context to get a System Service in the constructor. This eases testing & benefits from composition

public class MyActivity extends Activity {

    private final NotificationManager notificationManager;

    public MyActivity() {
       this(MyApp.getContext().getSystemService(NOTIFICATION_SERVICE));
    }

    public MyActivity(NotificationManager notificationManager) {
       this.notificationManager = notificationManager;
    }

    // onCreate etc

}

Test class would then use the overloaded constructor.

Android would use the default constructor.

Python interpreter error, x takes no arguments (1 given)

Your updateVelocity() method is missing the explicit self parameter in its definition.

Should be something like this:

def updateVelocity(self):
    for x in range(0,len(self.velocity)):
        self.velocity[x] = 2*random.random()*(self.pbestx[x]-self.current[x]) + 2 \
          * random.random()*(self.gbest[x]-self.current[x])

Your other methods (except for __init__) have the same problem.

How to use JavaScript variables in jQuery selectors?

var name = this.name;
$("input[name=" + name + "]").hide();

OR you can do something like this.

var id = this.id;
$('#' + id).hide();

OR you can give some effect also.

$("#" + this.id).slideUp();

If you want to remove the entire element permanently form the page.

$("#" + this.id).remove();

You can also use it in this also.

$("#" + this.id).slideUp('slow', function (){
    $("#" + this.id).remove();
});

How can I view the Git history in Visual Studio Code?

Copying formula to the next row when inserting a new row

Make the area with your data and formulas a Table:

enter image description here

Then adding new information in the next line will copy all formulas in that table for the new line. Data validation will also be applied for the new row as it was for the whole column. This is indeed Excel being smarter with your data.

NO VBA required...

PLS-00201 - identifier must be declared

When creating the TABLE under B2BOWNER, be sure to prefix the PL/SQL function with the Schema name; i.e. B2BOWNER.F_SSC_Page_Map_Insert.

I did not realize this until the DBAs pointed it out. I could have created the table under my root USER/SCHEMA and the PL/SQL function would have worked fine.

Use of PUT vs PATCH methods in REST API real life scenarios

NOTE: When I first spent time reading about REST, idempotence was a confusing concept to try to get right. I still didn't get it quite right in my original answer, as further comments (and Jason Hoetger's answer) have shown. For a while, I have resisted updating this answer extensively, to avoid effectively plagiarizing Jason, but I'm editing it now because, well, I was asked to (in the comments).

After reading my answer, I suggest you also read Jason Hoetger's excellent answer to this question, and I will try to make my answer better without simply stealing from Jason.

Why is PUT idempotent?

As you noted in your RFC 2616 citation, PUT is considered idempotent. When you PUT a resource, these two assumptions are in play:

  1. You are referring to an entity, not to a collection.

  2. The entity you are supplying is complete (the entire entity).

Let's look at one of your examples.

{ "username": "skwee357", "email": "[email protected]" }

If you POST this document to /users, as you suggest, then you might get back an entity such as

## /users/1

{
    "username": "skwee357",
    "email": "[email protected]"
}

If you want to modify this entity later, you choose between PUT and PATCH. A PUT might look like this:

PUT /users/1
{
    "username": "skwee357",
    "email": "[email protected]" // new email address
}

You can accomplish the same using PATCH. That might look like this:

PATCH /users/1
{
    "email": "[email protected]" // new email address
}

You'll notice a difference right away between these two. The PUT included all of the parameters on this user, but PATCH only included the one that was being modified (email).

When using PUT, it is assumed that you are sending the complete entity, and that complete entity replaces any existing entity at that URI. In the above example, the PUT and PATCH accomplish the same goal: they both change this user's email address. But PUT handles it by replacing the entire entity, while PATCH only updates the fields that were supplied, leaving the others alone.

Since PUT requests include the entire entity, if you issue the same request repeatedly, it should always have the same outcome (the data you sent is now the entire data of the entity). Therefore PUT is idempotent.

Using PUT wrong

What happens if you use the above PATCH data in a PUT request?

GET /users/1
{
    "username": "skwee357",
    "email": "[email protected]"
}
PUT /users/1
{
    "email": "[email protected]" // new email address
}

GET /users/1
{
    "email": "[email protected]" // new email address... and nothing else!
}

(I'm assuming for the purposes of this question that the server doesn't have any specific required fields, and would allow this to happen... that may not be the case in reality.)

Since we used PUT, but only supplied email, now that's the only thing in this entity. This has resulted in data loss.

This example is here for illustrative purposes -- don't ever actually do this. This PUT request is technically idempotent, but that doesn't mean it isn't a terrible, broken idea.

How can PATCH be idempotent?

In the above example, PATCH was idempotent. You made a change, but if you made the same change again and again, it would always give back the same result: you changed the email address to the new value.

GET /users/1
{
    "username": "skwee357",
    "email": "[email protected]"
}
PATCH /users/1
{
    "email": "[email protected]" // new email address
}

GET /users/1
{
    "username": "skwee357",
    "email": "[email protected]" // email address was changed
}
PATCH /users/1
{
    "email": "[email protected]" // new email address... again
}

GET /users/1
{
    "username": "skwee357",
    "email": "[email protected]" // nothing changed since last GET
}

My original example, fixed for accuracy

I originally had examples that I thought were showing non-idempotency, but they were misleading / incorrect. I am going to keep the examples, but use them to illustrate a different thing: that multiple PATCH documents against the same entity, modifying different attributes, do not make the PATCHes non-idempotent.

Let's say that at some past time, a user was added. This is the state that you are starting from.

{
  "id": 1,
  "name": "Sam Kwee",
  "email": "[email protected]",
  "address": "123 Mockingbird Lane",
  "city": "New York",
  "state": "NY",
  "zip": "10001"
}

After a PATCH, you have a modified entity:

PATCH /users/1
{"email": "[email protected]"}

{
  "id": 1,
  "name": "Sam Kwee",
  "email": "[email protected]", // the email changed, yay!
  "address": "123 Mockingbird Lane",
  "city": "New York",
  "state": "NY",
  "zip": "10001"
}

If you then repeatedly apply your PATCH, you will continue to get the same result: the email was changed to the new value. A goes in, A comes out, therefore this is idempotent.

An hour later, after you have gone to make some coffee and take a break, someone else comes along with their own PATCH. It seems the Post Office has been making some changes.

PATCH /users/1
{"zip": "12345"}

{
  "id": 1,
  "name": "Sam Kwee",
  "email": "[email protected]", // still the new email you set
  "address": "123 Mockingbird Lane",
  "city": "New York",
  "state": "NY",
  "zip": "12345" // and this change as well
}

Since this PATCH from the post office doesn't concern itself with email, only zip code, if it is repeatedly applied, it will also get the same result: the zip code is set to the new value. A goes in, A comes out, therefore this is also idempotent.

The next day, you decide to send your PATCH again.

PATCH /users/1
{"email": "[email protected]"}

{
  "id": 1,
  "name": "Sam Kwee",
  "email": "[email protected]",
  "address": "123 Mockingbird Lane",
  "city": "New York",
  "state": "NY",
  "zip": "12345"
}

Your patch has the same effect it had yesterday: it set the email address. A went in, A came out, therefore this is idempotent as well.

What I got wrong in my original answer

I want to draw an important distinction (something I got wrong in my original answer). Many servers will respond to your REST requests by sending back the new entity state, with your modifications (if any). So, when you get this response back, it is different from the one you got back yesterday, because the zip code is not the one you received last time. However, your request was not concerned with the zip code, only with the email. So your PATCH document is still idempotent - the email you sent in PATCH is now the email address on the entity.

So when is PATCH not idempotent, then?

For a full treatment of this question, I again refer you to Jason Hoetger's answer. I'm just going to leave it at that, because I honestly don't think I can answer this part better than he already has.

Html.Partial vs Html.RenderPartial & Html.Action vs Html.RenderAction

Html.Partial: returns MvcHtmlString and slow

Html.RenderPartial: directly render/write on output stream and returns void and it's very fast in comparison to Html.Partial

How to submit a form when the return key is pressed?

Since display: none buttons and inputs won't work in Safari and IE, I found that the easiest way, requiring no extra javascript hacks, is to simply add an absolutely positioned <button /> to the form and place it far off screen.

<form action="" method="get">
  <input type="text" name="name" />
  <input type="password" name="password" />
  <div class="yourCustomDiv"/>
  <button style="position:absolute;left:-10000px;right:9990px"/>
</form>

This works in the current version of all major browsers as of September 2016.

Obviously its reccomended (and more semantically correct) to just style the <button/> as desired.

How to call Base Class's __init__ method from the child class?

If you are using Python 3, it is recommended to simply call super() without any argument:

class Car(object):
    condition = "new"

    def __init__(self, model, color, mpg):
        self.model = model
        self.color = color
        self.mpg   = mpg

class ElectricCar(Car):
    def __init__(self, battery_type, model, color, mpg):
        self.battery_type=battery_type
        super().__init__(model, color, mpg)

car = ElectricCar('battery', 'ford', 'golden', 10)
print car.__dict__

Do not call super with class as it may lead to infinite recursion exceptions as per this answer.

Update Row if it Exists Else Insert Logic with Entity Framework

If you know that you're using the same context and not detaching any entities, you can make a generic version like this:

public void InsertOrUpdate<T>(T entity, DbContext db) where T : class
{
    if (db.Entry(entity).State == EntityState.Detached)
        db.Set<T>().Add(entity);

    // If an immediate save is needed, can be slow though
    // if iterating through many entities:
    db.SaveChanges();
}

db can of course be a class field, or the method can be made static and an extension, but this is the basics.

How to set "style=display:none;" using jQuery's attr method?

Why not just use $('#msform').hide()? Behind the scene jQuery's hide and show just set display: none or display: block.

hide() will not change the style if already hidden.

based on the comment below, you are removing all style with removeAttr("style"), in which case call hide() immediately after that.

e.g.

$("#msform").removeAttr("style").hide();

The reverse of this is of course show() as in

$("#msform").show();

Or, more interestingly, toggle(), which effective flips between hide() and show() based on the current state.

What is the id( ) function used for?

The is operator uses it to check whether two objects are identical (as opposed to equal). The actual value that is returned from id() is pretty much never used for anything because it doesn't really have a meaning, and it's platform-dependent.

generate model using user:references vs user_id:integer

Both will generate the same columns when you run the migration. In rails console, you can see that this is the case:

:001 > Micropost
=> Micropost(id: integer, user_id: integer, created_at: datetime, updated_at: datetime)

The second command adds a belongs_to :user relationship in your Micropost model whereas the first does not. When this relationship is specified, ActiveRecord will assume that the foreign key is kept in the user_id column and it will use a model named User to instantiate the specific user.

The second command also adds an index on the new user_id column.

ASP.NET email validator regex

Here is the regex for the Internet Email Address using the RegularExpressionValidator in .NET

\w+([-+.']\w+)*@\w+([-.]\w+)*\.\w+([-.]\w+)*

By the way if you put a RegularExpressionValidator on the page and go to the design view there is a ValidationExpression field that you can use to choose from a list of expressions provided by .NET. Once you choose the expression you want there is a Validation expression: textbox that holds the regex used for the validator

How do I set up NSZombieEnabled in Xcode 4?

In Xcode > 4.3:

You click on the scheme drop down bar -> edit scheme -> arguments tab and then add NSZombieEnabled in the Environment Variables column and YES in the value column.

When to use NSInteger vs. int

You usually want to use NSInteger when you don't know what kind of processor architecture your code might run on, so you may for some reason want the largest possible integer type, which on 32 bit systems is just an int, while on a 64-bit system it's a long.

I'd stick with using NSInteger instead of int/long unless you specifically require them.

NSInteger/NSUInteger are defined as *dynamic typedef*s to one of these types, and they are defined like this:

#if __LP64__ || TARGET_OS_EMBEDDED || TARGET_OS_IPHONE || TARGET_OS_WIN32 || NS_BUILD_32_LIKE_64
typedef long NSInteger;
typedef unsigned long NSUInteger;
#else
typedef int NSInteger;
typedef unsigned int NSUInteger;
#endif

With regard to the correct format specifier you should use for each of these types, see the String Programming Guide's section on Platform Dependencies

Replace deprecated preg_replace /e with preg_replace_callback

You can use an anonymous function to pass the matches to your function:

$result = preg_replace_callback(
    "/\{([<>])([a-zA-Z0-9_]*)(\?{0,1})([a-zA-Z0-9_]*)\}(.*)\{\\1\/\\2\}/isU",
    function($m) { return CallFunction($m[1], $m[2], $m[3], $m[4], $m[5]); },
    $result
);

Apart from being faster, this will also properly handle double quotes in your string. Your current code using /e would convert a double quote " into \".

How do I resolve a HTTP 414 "Request URI too long" error?

An excerpt from the RFC 2616: Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:

The POST method is used to request that the origin server accept the entity enclosed in the request as a new subordinate of the resource identified by the Request-URI in the Request-Line. POST is designed to allow a uniform method to cover the following functions:

  • Annotation of existing resources;
  • Posting a message to a bulletin board, newsgroup, mailing list, or similar group of articles;
  • Providing a block of data, such as the result of submitting a form, to a data-handling process;
  • Extending a database through an append operation.

Escape quote in web.config connection string

Use &quot; instead of " to escape it.

web.config is an XML file so you should use XML escaping.

connectionString="Server=dbsrv;User ID=myDbUser;Password=somepass&quot;word"

See this forum thread.

Update:

&quot; should work, but as it doesn't, have you tried some of the other string escape sequences for .NET? \" and ""?

Update 2:

Try single quotes for the connectionString:

connectionString='Server=dbsrv;User ID=myDbUser;Password=somepass"word'

Or:

connectionString='Server=dbsrv;User ID=myDbUser;Password=somepass&quot;word'

Update 3:

From MSDN (SqlConnection.ConnectionString Property):

To include values that contain a semicolon, single-quote character, or double-quote character, the value must be enclosed in double quotation marks. If the value contains both a semicolon and a double-quote character, the value can be enclosed in single quotation marks.

So:

connectionString="Server=dbsrv;User ID=myDbUser;Password='somepass&quot;word'"

The issue is not with web.config, but the format of the connection string. In a connection string, if you have a " in a value (of the key-value pair), you need to enclose the value in '. So, while Password=somepass"word does not work, Password='somepass"word' does.

Case insensitive string as HashMap key

Two choices come to my mind:

  1. You could use directly the s.toUpperCase().hashCode(); as the key of the Map.
  2. You could use a TreeMap<String> with a custom Comparator that ignore the case.

Otherwise, if you prefer your solution, instead of defining a new kind of String, I would rather implement a new Map with the required case insensibility functionality.

Pad with leading zeros

There's no such concept as an integer with padding. How many legs do you have - 2, 02 or 002? They're the same number. Indeed, even the "2" part isn't really part of the number, it's only relevant in the decimal representation.

If you need padding, that suggests you're talking about the textual representation of a number... i.e. a string.

You can achieve that using string formatting options, e.g.

string text = value.ToString("0000000");

or

string text = value.ToString("D7");

Django: How can I call a view function from template?

For example, a logout button can be written like this:

<button class="btn btn-primary" onclick="location.href={% url 'logout'%}">Logout</button>

Center image horizontally within a div

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the following is what you are after.

Note, the following I believe was accidentally omitted in the question (see comment):

<div id="thumbnailwrapper"> <!-- <<< This opening element -->
    <div id="artiststhumbnail">
...

So what you need is:

#artiststhumbnail {
    width:120px;
    height:108px;
    margin: 0 auto; /* <<< This line here. */

How to develop a soft keyboard for Android?

A good place to start is the sample application provided on the developer docs.

  • Guidelines would be to just make it as usable as possible. Take a look at the others available on the market to see what you should be aiming for
  • Yes, services can do most things, including internet; provided you have asked for those permissions
  • You can open activities and do anything you like n those if you run into a problem with doing some things in the keyboard. For example HTC's keyboard has a button to open the settings activity, and another to open a dialog to change languages.

Take a look at other IME's to see what you should be aiming for. Some (like the official one) are open source.

How update the _id of one MongoDB Document?

Here I have a solution that avoid multiple requests, for loops and old document removal.

You can easily create a new idea manually using something like:_id:ObjectId() But knowing Mongo will automatically assign an _id if missing, you can use aggregate to create a $project containing all the fields of your document, but omit the field _id. You can then save it with $out

So if your document is:

{
"_id":ObjectId("5b5ed345cfbce6787588e480"),
"title": "foo",
"description": "bar"
}

Then your query will be:

    db.getCollection('myCollection').aggregate([
        {$match:
             {_id: ObjectId("5b5ed345cfbce6787588e480")}
        }
        {$project:
            {
             title: '$title',
             description: '$description'
            }
        },
        {$out: 'myCollection'}
    ])

Retrieve list of tasks in a queue in Celery

This worked for me in my application:

def get_celery_queue_active_jobs(queue_name):
    connection = <CELERY_APP_INSTANCE>.connection()

    try:
        channel = connection.channel()
        name, jobs, consumers = channel.queue_declare(queue=queue_name, passive=True)
        active_jobs = []

        def dump_message(message):
            active_jobs.append(message.properties['application_headers']['task'])

        channel.basic_consume(queue=queue_name, callback=dump_message)

        for job in range(jobs):
            connection.drain_events()

        return active_jobs
    finally:
        connection.close()

active_jobs will be a list of strings that correspond to tasks in the queue.

Don't forget to swap out CELERY_APP_INSTANCE with your own.

MySQL compare DATE string with string from DATETIME field

Use the following:

SELECT * FROM `calendar` WHERE DATE(startTime) = '2010-04-29'

Just for reference I have a 2 million record table, I ran a similar query. Salils answer took 4.48 seconds, the above took 2.25 seconds.

So if the table is BIG I would suggest this rather.

Define make variable at rule execution time

I dislike "Don't" answers, but... don't.

make's variables are global and are supposed to be evaluated during makefile's "parsing" stage, not during execution stage.

In this case, as long as the variable local to a single target, follow @nobar's answer and make it a shell variable.

Target-specific variables, too, are considered harmful by other make implementations: kati, Mozilla pymake. Because of them, a target can be built differently depending on if it's built standalone, or as a dependency of a parent target with a target-specific variable. And you won't know which way it was, because you don't know what is already built.

jQuery: Check if button is clicked

You can use this:

$("#id").click(function()
{
   $(this).data('clicked', true);
});

Now check it via an if statement:

if($("#id").data('clicked'))
{
   // code here
}

For more information you can visit the jQuery website on the .data() function.

Getting current device language in iOS?

Obviously, the solutions relying, for example, on

[[NSLocale preferredLanguages] objectAtIndex:0]

usually work fine and return the current device language.

But it could be misleading in some cases :

If the app in which you want to get this value has already changed the language, for example with this kind of code :

NSString *lg = @"en"; // or anything like @"en", @"fr", etc.
[[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]
    setObject:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:lg, nil]
    forKey:@"AppleLanguages"]

In this case, [NSLocale preferredLanguages] actually returns the preferred language set (and used) in this particular app, not the current device language !

And... in this case the only way to properly get the actual current device language (and not that previously set in the app), is to firstly clear the key @"appleLanguages" in NSUserDefaults, like this :

[[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]removeObjectForKey:@"AppleLanguages"];

Then, [NSLocale preferredLanguages] now returns the correct value.

Hope this help.

How to replace a hash key with another key

Previous answers are good enough, but they might update original data. In case if you don't want the original data to be affected, you can try my code.

 newhash=hash.reject{|k| k=='_id'}.merge({id:hash['_id']})

First it will ignore the key '_id' then merge with the updated one.

I had this problem after upgrading to macOS Catalina.

The issue is resolved as follows:

1. Find git location from the terminal:

which git

2. Add the location of git in settings file with your location:

settings.json

"git.path": "/usr/local/bin/git",

Depending on your platform, the user settings file (settings.json) is located here:

Windows %APPDATA%\Code\User\settings.json

macOS $HOME/Library/Application Support/Code/User/settings.json

Linux $HOME/.config/Code/User/settings.json

Return multiple values from a function, sub or type?

You might want want to rethink the structure of you application, if you really, really want one method to return multiple values.

Either break things apart, so distinct methods return distinct values, or figure out a logical grouping and build an object to hold that data that can in turn be returned.

' this is the VB6/VBA equivalent of a struct
' data, no methods
Private Type settings
    root As String
    path As String
    name_first As String
    name_last As String
    overwrite_prompt As Boolean
End Type

Public Sub Main()

    Dim mySettings As settings
    mySettings = getSettings()

End Sub

' if you want this to be public, you're better off with a class instead of a User-Defined-Type (UDT)
Private Function getSettings() As settings

    Dim sets As settings

    With sets ' retrieve values here
        .root = "foo"
        .path = "bar"
        .name_first = "Don"
        .name_last = "Knuth"
        .overwrite_prompt = False
    End With

    ' return a single struct, vb6/vba-style
    getSettings = sets

End Function

Get column from a two dimensional array

Taking a column is easy with the map function.

// a two-dimensional array
var two_d = [[1,2,3],[4,5,6],[7,8,9]];

// take the third column
var col3 = two_d.map(function(value,index) { return value[2]; });

Why bother with the slice at all? Just filter the matrix to find the rows of interest.

var interesting = two_d.filter(function(value,index) {return value[1]==5;});
// interesting is now [[4,5,6]]

Sadly, filter and map are not natively available on IE9 and lower. The MDN documentation provides implementations for browsers without native support.

Programmatically Add CenterX/CenterY Constraints

Update for Swift 3/Swift 4:

As of iOS 8, you can and should activate your constraints by setting their isActive property to true. This enables the constraints to add themselves to the proper views. You can activate multiple constraints at once by passing an array containing the constraints to NSLayoutConstraint.activate()

let label = UILabel(frame: CGRect.zero)
label.text = "Nothing to show"
label.textAlignment = .center
label.backgroundColor = .red // Set background color to see if label is centered
label.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
self.tableView.addSubview(label)

let widthConstraint = NSLayoutConstraint(item: label, attribute: .width, relatedBy: .equal,
                                         toItem: nil, attribute: .notAnAttribute, multiplier: 1.0, constant: 250)

let heightConstraint = NSLayoutConstraint(item: label, attribute: .height, relatedBy: .equal,
                                          toItem: nil, attribute: .notAnAttribute, multiplier: 1.0, constant: 100)

let xConstraint = NSLayoutConstraint(item: label, attribute: .centerX, relatedBy: .equal, toItem: self.tableView, attribute: .centerX, multiplier: 1, constant: 0)

let yConstraint = NSLayoutConstraint(item: label, attribute: .centerY, relatedBy: .equal, toItem: self.tableView, attribute: .centerY, multiplier: 1, constant: 0)

NSLayoutConstraint.activate([widthConstraint, heightConstraint, xConstraint, yConstraint])

Better Solution:

Since this question was originally answered, layout anchors were introduced making it much easier to create the constraints. In this example I create the constraints and immediately activate them:

label.widthAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 250).isActive = true
label.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 100).isActive = true
label.centerXAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.tableView.centerXAnchor).isActive = true
label.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.tableView.centerYAnchor).isActive = true

or the same using NSLayoutConstraint.activate():

NSLayoutConstraint.activate([
    label.widthAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 250),
    label.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: 100),
    label.centerXAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.tableView.centerXAnchor),
    label.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.tableView.centerYAnchor)
])

Note: Always add your subviews to the view hierarchy before creating and activating the constraints.

Original Answer:

The constraints make reference to self.tableView. Since you are adding the label as a subview of self.tableView, the constraints need to be added to the "common ancestor":

   self.tableView.addConstraint(xConstraint)
   self.tableView.addConstraint(yConstraint)

As @mustafa and @kcstricks pointed out in the comments, you need to set label.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints to false. When you do this, you also need to specify the width and height of the label with constraints because the frame no longer is used. Finally, you also should set the textAlignment to .Center so that your text is centered in your label.

    var  label = UILabel(frame: CGRectZero)
    label.text = "Nothing to show"
    label.textAlignment = .Center
    label.backgroundColor = UIColor.redColor() // Set background color to see if label is centered
    label.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
    self.tableView.addSubview(label)

    let widthConstraint = NSLayoutConstraint(item: label, attribute: .Width, relatedBy: .Equal,
        toItem: nil, attribute: .NotAnAttribute, multiplier: 1.0, constant: 250)
    label.addConstraint(widthConstraint)

    let heightConstraint = NSLayoutConstraint(item: label, attribute: .Height, relatedBy: .Equal,
        toItem: nil, attribute: .NotAnAttribute, multiplier: 1.0, constant: 100)
    label.addConstraint(heightConstraint)

    let xConstraint = NSLayoutConstraint(item: label, attribute: .CenterX, relatedBy: .Equal, toItem: self.tableView, attribute: .CenterX, multiplier: 1, constant: 0)

    let yConstraint = NSLayoutConstraint(item: label, attribute: .CenterY, relatedBy: .Equal, toItem: self.tableView, attribute: .CenterY, multiplier: 1, constant: 0)

    self.tableView.addConstraint(xConstraint)
    self.tableView.addConstraint(yConstraint)

don't fail jenkins build if execute shell fails

Jenkins is executing shell build steps using /bin/sh -xe by default. -x means to print every command executed. -e means to exit with failure if any of the commands in the script failed.

So I think what happened in your case is your git command exit with 1, and because of the default -e param, the shell picks up the non-0 exit code, ignores the rest of the script and marks the step as a failure. We can confirm this if you can post your build step script here.

If that's the case, you can try to put #!/bin/sh so that the script will be executed without option; or do a set +e or anything similar on top of the build step to override this behavior.

Edited: Another thing to note is that, if the last command in your shell script returns non-0 code, the whole build step will still be marked as fail even with this setup. In this case, you can simply put a true command at the end to avoid that.

MSSQL Select statement with incremental integer column... not from a table

You can start with a custom number and increment from there, for example you want to add a cheque number for each payment you can do:

select @StartChequeNumber = 3446;
SELECT
((ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY AnyColumn)) + @StartChequeNumber ) AS 'ChequeNumber'
,* FROM YourTable

will give the correct cheque number for each row.

And of course, the node.js server can be on any unused port, it doesn't have to be port 443.
