Is embedding background image data into CSS as Base64 good or bad practice?

I disagree with the recommendation to create separate CSS files for non-editorial images.

Assuming the images are for UI purposes, it's presentation layer styling, and as mentioned above, if you're doing mobile UI's its definitely a good idea to keep all styling in a single file so it can be cached once.

Capturing multiple line output into a Bash variable

In addition to the answer given by @l0b0 I just had the situation where I needed to both keep any trailing newlines output by the script and check the script's return code. And the problem with l0b0's answer is that the 'echo x' was resetting $? back to zero... so I managed to come up with this very cunning solution:

RESULTX="$(./myscript; echo x$?)"
RETURNCODE=${RESULTX##*x}
RESULT="${RESULTX%x*}"

presentViewController and displaying navigation bar

If you didn't set the modalPresentationStyle property (like to UIModalPresentationFormSheet), the navigation bar will be displayed always. To ensure, always do

[[self.navigationController topViewController] presentViewController:vieController
                                                            animated:YES
                                                          completion:nil];

This will show the navigation bar always.

Change bootstrap navbar background color and font color

I have successfully styled my Bootstrap navbar using the following CSS. Also you didn't define any font in your CSS so that's why the font isn't changing. The site for which this CSS is used can be found here.

.navbar-default .navbar-nav > li > a:hover, .navbar-default .navbar-nav > li > a:focus {
    color: #000; /*Sets the text hover color on navbar*/
}

.navbar-default .navbar-nav > .active > a, .navbar-default .navbar-nav > .active >
        a:hover, .navbar-default .navbar-nav > .active > a:focus {
    color: white; /*BACKGROUND color for active*/
    background-color: #030033;
}

.navbar-default {
    background-color: #0f006f;
    border-color: #030033;
}

.dropdown-menu > li > a:hover,
.dropdown-menu > li > a:focus {
    color: #262626;
    text-decoration: none;
    background-color: #66CCFF; /*change color of links in drop down here*/
}

.nav > li > a:hover,
.nav > li > a:focus {
    text-decoration: none;
    background-color: silver; /*Change rollover cell color here*/
}

.navbar-default .navbar-nav > li > a {
    color: white; /*Change active text color here*/
}

Warning: comparison with string literals results in unspecified behaviour

This an old question, but I have had to explain it to someone recently and I thought recording the answer here would be helpful at least in understanding how C works.

String literals like

"a"

or

"This is a string"

are put in the text or data segments of your program.

A string in C is actually a pointer to a char, and the string is understood to be the subsequent chars in memory up until a NUL char is encountered. That is, C doesn't really know about strings.

So if I have

char *s1 = "This is a string";

then s1 is a pointer to the first byte of the string.

Now, if I have

char *s2 = "This is a string";

this is also a pointer to the same first byte of that string in the text or data segment of the program.

But if I have

char *s3 = malloc( 17 );
strcpy(s3, "This is a string");

then s3 is a pointer to another place in memory into which I copy all the bytes of the other strings.

Illustrative examples:

Although, as your compiler rightly points out, you shouldn't do this, the following will evaluate to true:

s1 == s2 // True: we are comparing two pointers that contain the same address

but the following will evaluate to false

s1 == s3 // False: Comparing two pointers that don't hold the same address.

And although it might be tempting to have something like this:

struct Vehicle{
    char *type;
    // other stuff
}

if( type == "Car" )
   //blah1
else if( type == "Motorcycle )
   //blah2

You shouldn't do it because it's not something that is guarantied to work. Even if you know that type will always be set using a string literal.

I have tested it and it works. If I do

A.type = "Car";

then blah1 gets executed and similarly for "Motorcycle". And you'd be able to do things like

if( A.type == B.type )

but this is just terrible. I'm writing about it because I think it's interesting to know why it works, and it helps understand why you shouldn't do it.

Solutions:

In your case, what you want to do is use strcmp(a,b) == 0 to replace a == b

In the case of my example, you should use an enum.

enum type {CAR = 0, MOTORCYCLE = 1}

The preceding thing with string was useful because you could print the type, so you might have an array like this

char *types[] = {"Car", "Motorcycle"};

And now that I think about it, this is error prone since one must be careful to maintain the same order in the types array.

Therefore it might be better to do

char *getTypeString(int type)
{
    switch(type)
    case CAR: return "Car";
    case MOTORCYCLE: return "Motorcycle"
    default: return NULL;
}

Excel VBA: AutoFill Multiple Cells with Formulas

The approach you're looking for is FillDown. Another way so you don't have to kick your head off every time is to store formulas in an array of strings. Combining them gives you a powerful method of inputting formulas by the multitude. Code follows:

Sub FillDown()

    Dim strFormulas(1 To 3) As Variant

    With ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Sheet1")
        strFormulas(1) = "=SUM(A2:B2)"
        strFormulas(2) = "=PRODUCT(A2:B2)"
        strFormulas(3) = "=A2/B2"

        .Range("C2:E2").Formula = strFormulas
        .Range("C2:E11").FillDown
    End With

End Sub

Screenshots:

Result as of line: .Range("C2:E2").Formula = strFormulas:

enter image description here

Result as of line: .Range("C2:E11").FillDown:

enter image description here

Of course, you can make it dynamic by storing the last row into a variable and turning it to something like .Range("C2:E" & LRow).FillDown, much like what you did.

Hope this helps!

I was getting the same error while trying to load simply HTML files that used JSON data to populate the page, so I used used node.js and express to solve the problem. If you do not have node installed, you need to install node first.

  1. Install express npm install express

  2. Create a server.js file in the root folder of your project, in my case one folder above the files I wanted to server

  3. Put something like the following in the server.js file and read about this on the express gihub site:

    var express = require('express');
    var app = express();
    var path = require('path');

    // __dirname will use the current path from where you run this file
    app.use(express.static(__dirname));
    app.use(express.static(path.join(__dirname, '/FOLDERTOHTMLFILESTOSERVER')));

    app.listen(8000);
    console.log('Listening on port 8000');

  4. After you've saved server.js, you can run the server using:

node server.js

  1. Go to http://localhost:8000/FILENAME and you should see the HTML file you were trying to load

How can I create 2 separate log files with one log4j config file?

Try the following configuration:

log4j.rootLogger=TRACE, stdout

log4j.appender.stdout=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender
log4j.appender.stdout.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
log4j.appender.stdout.layout.ConversionPattern=%d [%24F:%t:%L] - %m%n

log4j.appender.debugLog=org.apache.log4j.FileAppender
log4j.appender.debugLog.File=logs/debug.log
log4j.appender.debugLog.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
log4j.appender.debugLog.layout.ConversionPattern=%d [%24F:%t:%L] - %m%n

log4j.appender.reportsLog=org.apache.log4j.FileAppender
log4j.appender.reportsLog.File=logs/reports.log
log4j.appender.reportsLog.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
log4j.appender.reportsLog.layout.ConversionPattern=%d [%24F:%t:%L] - %m%n

log4j.category.debugLogger=TRACE, debugLog
log4j.additivity.debugLogger=false

log4j.category.reportsLogger=DEBUG, reportsLog
log4j.additivity.reportsLogger=false

Then configure the loggers in the Java code accordingly:

static final Logger debugLog = Logger.getLogger("debugLogger");
static final Logger resultLog = Logger.getLogger("reportsLogger");

Do you want output to go to stdout? If not, change the first line of log4j.properties to:

log4j.rootLogger=OFF

and get rid of the stdout lines.

Does Spring Data JPA have any way to count entites using method name resolving?

I have only been working with it for a few weeks but I don't believe that this is strictly possible however you should be able to get the same effect with a little more effort; just write the query yourself and annotate the method name. It's probably not much simpler than writing the method yourself but it is cleaner in my opinion.

Edit: it is now possible according to DATAJPA-231

Can a Windows batch file determine its own file name?

Yes.

Use the special %0 variable to get the path to the current file.

Write %~n0 to get just the filename without the extension.

Write %~n0%~x0 to get the filename and extension.

Also possible to write %~nx0 to get the filename and extension.

How do I check if a given Python string is a substring of another one?

string.find("substring") will help you. This function returns -1 when there is no substring.

Overriding !important style

I believe the only way to do this it to add the style as a new CSS declaration with the '!important' suffix. The easiest way to do this is to append a new <style> element to the head of document:

function addNewStyle(newStyle) {
    var styleElement = document.getElementById('styles_js');
    if (!styleElement) {
        styleElement = document.createElement('style');
        styleElement.type = 'text/css';
        styleElement.id = 'styles_js';
        document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(styleElement);
    }
    styleElement.appendChild(document.createTextNode(newStyle));
}

addNewStyle('td.EvenRow a {display:inline !important;}')

The rules added with the above method will (if you use the !important suffix) override other previously set styling. If you're not using the suffix then make sure to take concepts like 'specificity' into account.

How can I erase all inline styles with javascript and leave only the styles specified in the css style sheet?

If you need to just empty the style of an element then:
element.style.cssText = null;
This should do good. Hope it helps!

When correctly use Task.Run and when just async-await

One issue with your ContentLoader is that internally it operates sequentially. A better pattern is to parallelize the work and then sychronize at the end, so we get

public class PageViewModel : IHandle<SomeMessage>
{
   ...

   public async void Handle(SomeMessage message)
   {
      ShowLoadingAnimation();

      // makes UI very laggy, but still not dead
      await this.contentLoader.LoadContentAsync();

      HideLoadingAnimation();
   }
}

public class ContentLoader
{
    public async Task LoadContentAsync()
    {
        var tasks = new List<Task>();
        tasks.Add(DoCpuBoundWorkAsync());
        tasks.Add(DoIoBoundWorkAsync());
        tasks.Add(DoCpuBoundWorkAsync());
        tasks.Add(DoSomeOtherWorkAsync());

        await Task.WhenAll(tasks).ConfigureAwait(false);
    }
}

Obviously, this doesn't work if any of the tasks require data from other earlier tasks, but should give you better overall throughput for most scenarios.

Difference between VARCHAR and TEXT in MySQL

TL;DR

TEXT

  • fixed max size of 65535 characters (you cannot limit the max size)
  • takes 2 + c bytes of disk space, where c is the length of the stored string.
  • cannot be (fully) part of an index. One would need to specify a prefix length.

VARCHAR(M)

  • variable max size of M characters
  • M needs to be between 1 and 65535
  • takes 1 + c bytes (for M ≤ 255) or 2 + c (for 256 ≤ M ≤ 65535) bytes of disk space where c is the length of the stored string
  • can be part of an index

More Details

TEXT has a fixed max size of 2¹6-1 = 65535 characters.
VARCHAR has a variable max size M up to M = 2¹6-1.
So you cannot choose the size of TEXT but you can for a VARCHAR.

The other difference is, that you cannot put an index (except for a fulltext index) on a TEXT column.
So if you want to have an index on the column, you have to use VARCHAR. But notice that the length of an index is also limited, so if your VARCHAR column is too long you have to use only the first few characters of the VARCHAR column in your index (See the documentation for CREATE INDEX).

But you also want to use VARCHAR, if you know that the maximum length of the possible input string is only M, e.g. a phone number or a name or something like this. Then you can use VARCHAR(30) instead of TINYTEXT or TEXT and if someone tries to save the text of all three "Lord of the Ring" books in your phone number column you only store the first 30 characters :)

Edit: If the text you want to store in the database is longer than 65535 characters, you have to choose MEDIUMTEXT or LONGTEXT, but be careful: MEDIUMTEXT stores strings up to 16 MB, LONGTEXT up to 4 GB. If you use LONGTEXT and get the data via PHP (at least if you use mysqli without store_result), you maybe get a memory allocation error, because PHP tries to allocate 4 GB of memory to be sure the whole string can be buffered. This maybe also happens in other languages than PHP.

However, you should always check the input (Is it too long? Does it contain strange code?) before storing it in the database.

Notice: For both types, the required disk space depends only on the length of the stored string and not on the maximum length.
E.g. if you use the charset latin1 and store the text "Test" in VARCHAR(30), VARCHAR(100) and TINYTEXT, it always requires 5 bytes (1 byte to store the length of the string and 1 byte for each character). If you store the same text in a VARCHAR(2000) or a TEXT column, it would also require the same space, but, in this case, it would be 6 bytes (2 bytes to store the string length and 1 byte for each character).

For more information have a look at the documentation.

Finally, I want to add a notice, that both, TEXT and VARCHAR are variable length data types, and so they most likely minimize the space you need to store the data. But this comes with a trade-off for performance. If you need better performance, you have to use a fixed length type like CHAR. You can read more about this here.

How to check if IEnumerable is null or empty?

I use

    list.Where (r=>r.value == value).DefaultIfEmpty().First()

The result will be null if no match, otherwise returns one of the objects

If you wanted the list, I believe leaving of First() or calling ToList() will provide the list or null.

How do I get video durations with YouTube API version 3?

You will have to make a call to the YouTube data API's video resource after you make the search call. You can put up to 50 video IDs in a search, so you won't have to call it for each element.

https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/videos/list

You'll want to set part=contentDetails, because the duration is there.

For example, the following call:

https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/videos?id=9bZkp7q19f0&part=contentDetails&key={YOUR_API_KEY}

Gives this result:

The time is formatted as an ISO 8601 string. PT stands for Time Duration, 4M is 4 minutes, and 13S is 13 seconds.

Java: Replace all ' in a string with \'

You have to first escape the backslash because it's a literal (yielding \\), and then escape it again because of the regular expression (yielding \\\\). So, Try:

 s.replaceAll("'", "\\\\'");

output:

You\'ll be totally awesome, I\'m really terrible

TypeError: module.__init__() takes at most 2 arguments (3 given)

Even after @Mickey Perlstein's answer and his 3 hours of detective work, it still took me a few more minutes to apply this to my own mess. In case anyone else is like me and needs a little more help, here's what was going on in my situation.

  • responses is a module
  • Response is a base class within the responses module
  • GeoJsonResponse is a new class derived from Response

Initial GeoJsonResponse class:

from pyexample.responses import Response

class GeoJsonResponse(Response):

    def __init__(self, geo_json_data):

Looks fine. No problems until you try to debug the thing, which is when you get a bunch of seemingly vague error messages like this:

from pyexample.responses import GeoJsonResponse ..\pyexample\responses\GeoJsonResponse.py:12: in (module) class GeoJsonResponse(Response):

E TypeError: module() takes at most 2 arguments (3 given)

=================================== ERRORS ====================================

The errors were doing their best to point me in the right direction, and @Mickey Perlstein's answer was dead on, it just took me a minute to put it all together in my own context:

I was importing the module:

from pyexample.responses import Response

when I should have been importing the class:

from pyexample.responses.Response import Response

Hope this helps someone. (In my defense, it's still pretty early.)

What's the fastest way of checking if a point is inside a polygon in python

Comparison of different methods

I found other methods to check if a point is inside a polygon (here). I tested two of them only (is_inside_sm and is_inside_postgis) and the results were the same as the other methods.

Thanks to @epifanio, I parallelized the codes and compared them with @epifanio and @user3274748 (ray_tracing_numpy) methods. Note that both methods had a bug so I fixed them as shown in their codes below.

One more thing that I found is that the code provided for creating a polygon does not generate a closed path np.linspace(0,2*np.pi,lenpoly)[:-1]. As a result, the codes provided in above GitHub repository may not work properly. So It's better to create a closed path (first and last points should be the same).

Codes

Method 1: parallelpointinpolygon

from numba import jit, njit
import numba
import numpy as np

@jit(nopython=True)
def pointinpolygon(x,y,poly):
    n = len(poly)
    inside = False
    p2x = 0.0
    p2y = 0.0
    xints = 0.0
    p1x,p1y = poly[0]
    for i in numba.prange(n+1):
        p2x,p2y = poly[i % n]
        if y > min(p1y,p2y):
            if y <= max(p1y,p2y):
                if x <= max(p1x,p2x):
                    if p1y != p2y:
                        xints = (y-p1y)*(p2x-p1x)/(p2y-p1y)+p1x
                    if p1x == p2x or x <= xints:
                        inside = not inside
        p1x,p1y = p2x,p2y

    return inside

@njit(parallel=True)
def parallelpointinpolygon(points, polygon):
    D = np.empty(len(points), dtype=numba.boolean)
    for i in numba.prange(0, len(D)): #<-- Fixed here, must start from zero
        D[i] = pointinpolygon(points[i,0], points[i,1], polygon)
    return D

Method 2: ray_tracing_numpy_numba

@jit(nopython=True)
def ray_tracing_numpy_numba(points,poly):
    x,y = points[:,0], points[:,1]
    n = len(poly)
    inside = np.zeros(len(x),np.bool_)
    p2x = 0.0
    p2y = 0.0
    p1x,p1y = poly[0]
    for i in range(n+1):
        p2x,p2y = poly[i % n]
        idx = np.nonzero((y > min(p1y,p2y)) & (y <= max(p1y,p2y)) & (x <= max(p1x,p2x)))[0]
        if len(idx): # <-- Fixed here. If idx is null skip comparisons below.
            if p1y != p2y:
                xints = (y[idx]-p1y)*(p2x-p1x)/(p2y-p1y)+p1x
            if p1x == p2x:
                inside[idx] = ~inside[idx]
            else:
                idxx = idx[x[idx] <= xints]
                inside[idxx] = ~inside[idxx]

        p1x,p1y = p2x,p2y
    return inside

Method 3: Matplotlib contains_points

path = mpltPath.Path(polygon,closed=True) # <-- Very important to mention that the path
                                           # is closed (default is false)

Method 4: is_inside_sm (got it from here)

@jit(nopython=True)
def is_inside_sm(polygon, point):
    length = len(polygon)-1
    dy2 = point[1] - polygon[0][1]
    intersections = 0
    ii = 0
    jj = 1

    while ii<length:
        dy  = dy2
        dy2 = point[1] - polygon[jj][1]

        # consider only lines which are not completely above/bellow/right from the point
        if dy*dy2 <= 0.0 and (point[0] >= polygon[ii][0] or point[0] >= polygon[jj][0]):

            # non-horizontal line
            if dy<0 or dy2<0:
                F = dy*(polygon[jj][0] - polygon[ii][0])/(dy-dy2) + polygon[ii][0]

                if point[0] > F: # if line is left from the point - the ray moving towards left, will intersect it
                    intersections += 1
                elif point[0] == F: # point on line
                    return 2

            # point on upper peak (dy2=dx2=0) or horizontal line (dy=dy2=0 and dx*dx2<=0)
            elif dy2==0 and (point[0]==polygon[jj][0] or (dy==0 and (point[0]-polygon[ii][0])*(point[0]-polygon[jj][0])<=0)):
                return 2

        ii = jj
        jj += 1

    #print 'intersections =', intersections
    return intersections & 1

@njit(parallel=True)
def is_inside_sm_parallel(points, polygon):
    ln = len(points)

    for i in numba.prange(ln):
        D[i] = is_inside_sm(polygon,points[i])
    return D

Method 5: is_inside_postgis (got it from here)

@jit(nopython=True)
def is_inside_postgis(polygon, point):
    length = len(polygon)
    intersections = 0

    dx2 = point[0] - polygon[0][0]
    dy2 = point[1] - polygon[0][1]
    ii = 0
    jj = 1

    while jj<length:
        dx  = dx2
        dy  = dy2
        dx2 = point[0] - polygon[jj][0]
        dy2 = point[1] - polygon[jj][1]

        F =(dx-dx2)*dy - dx*(dy-dy2);
        if 0.0==F and dx*dx2<=0 and dy*dy2<=0:
            return 2;

        if (dy>=0 and dy2<0) or (dy2>=0 and dy<0):
            if F > 0:
                intersections += 1
            elif F < 0:
                intersections -= 1

        ii = jj
        jj += 1

    #print 'intersections =', intersections
    return intersections != 0

@njit(parallel=True)
def is_inside_postgis_parallel(points, polygon):
    ln = len(points)
    D = np.empty(ln, dtype=numba.boolean)
    for i in numba.prange(ln):

How to create file execute mode permissions in Git on Windows?

There's no need to do this in two commits, you can add the file and mark it executable in a single commit:

C:\Temp\TestRepo>touch foo.sh

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git add foo.sh

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git ls-files --stage
100644 e69de29bb2d1d6434b8b29ae775ad8c2e48c5391 0       foo.sh

As you note, after adding, the mode is 0644 (ie, not executable). However, we can mark it as executable before committing:

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git update-index --chmod=+x foo.sh

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git ls-files --stage
100755 e69de29bb2d1d6434b8b29ae775ad8c2e48c5391 0       foo.sh

And now the file is mode 0755 (executable).

C:\Temp\TestRepo>git commit -m"Executable!"
[master (root-commit) 1f7a57a] Executable!
 1 file changed, 0 insertions(+), 0 deletions(-)
 create mode 100755 foo.sh

And now we have a single commit with a single executable file.

Gunicorn worker timeout error

timeout is a key parameter to this problem.

however it's not suit for me.

i found there is not gunicorn timeout error when i set workers=1.

when i look though my code, i found some socket connect (socket.send & socket.recv) in server init.

socket.recv will block my code and that's why it always timeout when workers>1

hope to give some ideas to the people who have some problem with me

Start index for iterating Python list

You can always loop using an index counter the conventional C style looping:

for i in range(len(l)-1):
    print l[i+1]

It is always better to follow the "loop on every element" style because that's the normal thing to do, but if it gets in your way, just remember the conventional style is also supported, always.

ObjectiveC Parse Integer from String

NSArray *_returnedArguments = [serverOutput componentsSeparatedByString:@":"];

_returnedArguments is an array of NSStrings which the UITextField text property is expecting. No need to convert.

Syntax error:

[_appDelegate loggedIn:usernameField.text:passwordField.text:(int)[[_returnedArguments objectAtIndex:2] intValue]];

If your _appDelegate has a passwordField property, then you can set the text using the following

[[_appDelegate passwordField] setText:[_returnedArguments objectAtIndex:2]];

How to use readline() method in Java?

In summary: I would be careful as to what code you copy. It is possible you are copying code which happens to work, rather than well chosen code.

In intnumber, parseInt is used and in floatnumber valueOf is used why so?

There is no good reason I can see. It's an inconsistent use of the APIs as you suspect.

Java is case sensitive, and there isn't any Readline() method. Perhaps you mean readLine().

DataInputStream.readLine() is deprecated in favour of using BufferedReader.readLine();

However, for your case, I would use the Scanner class.

Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);
int intNum = sc.nextInt();
float floatNum = sc.nextFloat();

If you want to know what a class does I suggest you have a quick look at the Javadoc.

jQuery Find and List all LI elements within a UL within a specific DIV

$('li[rel=7]').siblings().andSelf();

// or:

$('li[rel=7]').parent().children();

Now that you added that comment explaining that you want to "form an array of rels per column", you should do this:

var rels = [];

$('ul').each(function() {
    var localRels = [];

    $(this).find('li').each(function(){
        localRels.push( $(this).attr('rel') );
    });

    rels.push(localRels);
});

Add class to an element in Angular 4

Use [ngClass] and conditionally apply class based on the id.

In your HTML file:

<li>
    <img [ngClass]="{'this-is-a-class': id === 1 }" id="1"
         src="../../assets/images/1.jpg" (click)="addClass(id=1)"/>
</li>
<li>
    <img [ngClass]="{'this-is-a-class': id === 2 }" id="2"
         src="../../assets/images/2.png" (click)="addClass(id=2)"/>
</li>

In your TypeScript file:

addClass(id: any) {
    this.id = id;
}

Why use prefixes on member variables in C++ classes

I generally don't use a prefix for member variables.

I used to use a m prefix, until someone pointed out that "C++ already has a standard prefix for member access: this->.

So that's what I use now. That is, when there is ambiguity, I add the this-> prefix, but usually, no ambiguity exists, and I can just refer directly to the variable name.

To me, that's the best of both worlds. I have a prefix I can use when I need it, and I'm free to leave it out whenever possible.

Of course, the obvious counter to this is "yes, but then you can't see at a glance whether a variable is a class member or not".

To which I say "so what? If you need to know that, your class probably has too much state. Or the function is too big and complicated".

In practice, I've found that this works extremely well. As an added bonus it allows me to promote a local variable to a class member (or the other way around) easily, without having to rename it.

And best of all, it is consistent! I don't have to do anything special or remember any conventions to maintain consistency.

By the way, you shouldn't use leading underscores for your class members. You get uncomfortably close to names that are reserved by the implementation.

The standard reserves all names starting with double underscore or underscore followed by capital letter. It also reserves all names starting with a single underscore in the global namespace.

So a class member with a leading underscore followed by a lower-case letter is legal, but sooner or late you're going to do the same to an identifier starting with upper-case, or otherwise break one of the above rules.

So it's easier to just avoid leading underscores. Use a postfix underscore, or a m_ or just m prefix if you want to encode scope in the variable name.

Does svn have a `revert-all` command?

You could do:

svn revert -R .

This will not delete any new file not under version control. But you can easily write a shell script to do that like:

for file in `svn status|grep "^ *?"|sed -e 's/^ *? *//'`; do rm $file ; done

How do I check out a remote Git branch?

The git remote show <origin name> command will list all branches (including un-tracked branches). Then you can find the remote branch name that you need to fetch.

Example:

$ git remote show origin

Use these steps to fetch remote branches:

git fetch <origin name> <remote branch name>:<local branch name>
git checkout <local branch name > (local branch name should the name that you given fetching)

Example:

$ git fetch origin test:test
$ git checkout test

Protect .NET code from reverse engineering?

Here's one idea: you could have a server hosted by your company that all instances of your software need to connect to. Simply having them connect and verify a registration key is not sufficient -- they'll just remove the check. In addition to the key check, you need to also have the server perform some vital task that the client can't perform itself, so it's impossible to remove. This of course would probably mean a lot of heavy processing on the part of your server, but it would make your software difficult to steal, and assuming you have a good key scheme (check ownership, etc), the keys will also be difficult to steal. This is probably more invasive than you want, since it will require your users to be connected to the internet to use your software.

How to rename JSON key

JSON.parse has two parameters. The second parameter, reviver, is a transform function that can be formatted output format we want. See ECMA specification here.

In reviver function:

  • if we return undefined, the original property will be deleted.
  • this is the object containing the property being processed as this function, and the property name as a string, the property value as arguments of this function.
const json = '[{"_id":"5078c3a803ff4197dc81fbfb","email":"[email protected]","image":"some_image_url","name":"Name 1"},{"_id":"5078c3a803ff4197dc81fbfc","email":"[email protected]","image":"some_image_url","name":"Name 2"}]';

const obj = JSON.parse(json, function(k, v) {
    if (k === "_id") {
        this.id = v;
        return; # if return undefined, orignal property will be removed
    }
    return v;
});

const res = JSON.stringify(obj);
console.log(res)

output:

[{"email":"[email protected]","image":"some_image_url","name":"Name 1","id":"5078c3a803ff4197dc81fbfb"},{"email":"[email protected]","image":"some_image_url","name":"Name 2","id":"5078c3a803ff4197dc81fbfc"}]

Java - Get a list of all Classes loaded in the JVM

An alternative approach to those described above would be to create an external agent using java.lang.instrument to find out what classes are loaded and run your program with the -javaagent switch:

import java.lang.instrument.ClassFileTransformer;
import java.lang.instrument.IllegalClassFormatException;
import java.security.ProtectionDomain;

public class SimpleTransformer implements ClassFileTransformer {

    public SimpleTransformer() {
        super();
    }

    public byte[] transform(ClassLoader loader, String className, Class redefiningClass, ProtectionDomain domain, byte[] bytes) throws IllegalClassFormatException {
        System.out.println("Loading class: " + className);
        return bytes;
    }
}

This approach has the added benefit of providing you with information about which ClassLoader loaded a given class.

How to add users to Docker container?

The trick is to use useradd instead of its interactive wrapper adduser. I usually create users with:

RUN useradd -ms /bin/bash newuser

which creates a home directory for the user and ensures that bash is the default shell.

You can then add:

USER newuser
WORKDIR /home/newuser

to your dockerfile. Every command afterwards as well as interactive sessions will be executed as user newuser:

docker run -t -i image
newuser@131b7ad86360:~$

You might have to give newuser the permissions to execute the programs you intend to run before invoking the user command.

Using non-privileged users inside containers is a good idea for security reasons. It also has a few drawbacks. Most importantly, people deriving images from your image will have to switch back to root before they can execute commands with superuser privileges.

Set Culture in an ASP.Net MVC app

I know this is an old question, but if you really would like to have this working with your ModelBinder (in respect to DefaultModelBinder.ResourceClassKey = "MyResource"; as well as the resources indicated in the data annotations of the viewmodel classes), the controller or even an ActionFilter is too late to set the culture.

The culture could be set in Application_AcquireRequestState, for example:

protected void Application_AcquireRequestState(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        // For example a cookie, but better extract it from the url
        string culture = HttpContext.Current.Request.Cookies["culture"].Value;

        Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = CultureInfo.GetCultureInfo(culture);
        Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = CultureInfo.GetCultureInfo(culture);
    }

EDIT

Actually there is a better way using a custom routehandler which sets the culture according to the url, perfectly described by Alex Adamyan on his blog.

All there is to do is to override the GetHttpHandler method and set the culture there.

public class MultiCultureMvcRouteHandler : MvcRouteHandler
{
    protected override IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext)

List of All Locales and Their Short Codes?

While accepted answer is pretty complete (I used myself in similar question that arised to me), I think it is worth to put the whole supported language codes and variations, as well as encodings, and point user to a file which is present in almost any linux distributions, in case he simply wants a quicker answer and no internet for example.

This is the file /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED and its contents:

Validate that end date is greater than start date with jQuery

Reference jquery.validate.js and jquery-1.2.6.js. Add a startDate class to your start date textbox. Add an endDate class to your end date textbox.

Add this script block to your page:-

<script type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function() {
        $.validator.addMethod("endDate", function(value, element) {
            var startDate = $('.startDate').val();
            return Date.parse(startDate) <= Date.parse(value) || value == "";
        }, "* End date must be after start date");
        $('#formId').validate();
    });
</script>

Hope this helps :-)

Equivalent of Math.Min & Math.Max for Dates?

There is no overload for DateTime values, but you can get the long value Ticks that is what the values contain, compare them and then create a new DateTime value from the result:

new DateTime(Math.Min(Date1.Ticks, Date2.Ticks))

(Note that the DateTime structure also contains a Kind property, that is not retained in the new value. This is normally not a problem; if you compare DateTime values of different kinds the comparison doesn't make sense anyway.)

Matplotlib color according to class labels

The accepted answer has it spot on, but if you might want to specify which class label should be assigned to a specific color or label you could do the following. I did a little label gymnastics with the colorbar, but making the plot itself reduces to a nice one-liner. This works great for plotting the results from classifications done with sklearn. Each label matches a (x,y) coordinate.

import matplotlib
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np

x = [4,8,12,16,1,4,9,16]
y = [1,4,9,16,4,8,12,3]
label = [0,1,2,3,0,1,2,3]
colors = ['red','green','blue','purple']

fig = plt.figure(figsize=(8,8))
plt.scatter(x, y, c=label, cmap=matplotlib.colors.ListedColormap(colors))

cb = plt.colorbar()
loc = np.arange(0,max(label),max(label)/float(len(colors)))
cb.set_ticks(loc)
cb.set_ticklabels(colors)

Scatter plot color labels

Using a slightly modified version of this answer, one can generalise the above for N colors as follows:

import numpy as np
import matplotlib as mpl
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

N = 23 # Number of labels

# setup the plot
fig, ax = plt.subplots(1,1, figsize=(6,6))
# define the data
x = np.random.rand(1000)
y = np.random.rand(1000)
tag = np.random.randint(0,N,1000) # Tag each point with a corresponding label

# define the colormap
cmap = plt.cm.jet
# extract all colors from the .jet map
cmaplist = [cmap(i) for i in range(cmap.N)]
# create the new map
cmap = cmap.from_list('Custom cmap', cmaplist, cmap.N)

# define the bins and normalize
bounds = np.linspace(0,N,N+1)
norm = mpl.colors.BoundaryNorm(bounds, cmap.N)

# make the scatter
scat = ax.scatter(x,y,c=tag,s=np.random.randint(100,500,N),cmap=cmap,     norm=norm)
# create the colorbar
cb = plt.colorbar(scat, spacing='proportional',ticks=bounds)
cb.set_label('Custom cbar')
ax.set_title('Discrete color mappings')
plt.show()

Which gives:

Transpose a range in VBA

This gets you X and X' as variant arrays you can pass to another function.

Dim X() As Variant
Dim XT() As Variant
X = ActiveSheet.Range("InRng").Value2
XT = Application.Transpose(X)

To have the transposed values as a range, you have to pass it via a worksheet as in this answer. Without seeing how your covariance function works it's hard to see what you need.

How can I make a horizontal ListView in Android?

You know, it might be possible to use an existing ListView with some judicious overriding of dispatchDraw() (to rotate the Canvas by 90 degrees), onTouch() (to swap the X and Y of the MotionEvent coords) and maybe onMeasure() or whatever to fool it into thinking it's y by x rather than x by y...

I have no idea if this would actually work but it'd be fun to find out. :)

How do I test which class an object is in Objective-C?

What means about isKindOfClass in Apple Documentation

Be careful when using this method on objects represented by a class cluster. Because of the nature of class clusters, the object you get back may not always be the type you expected. If you call a method that returns a class cluster, the exact type returned by the method is the best indicator of what you can do with that object. For example, if a method returns a pointer to an NSArray object, you should not use this method to see if the array is mutable, as shown in the following code:

// DO NOT DO THIS!
if ([myArray isKindOfClass:[NSMutableArray class]])
{
    // Modify the object
}

If you use such constructs in your code, you might think it is alright to modify an object that in reality should not be modified. Doing so might then create problems for other code that expected the object to remain unchanged.

git rm - fatal: pathspec did not match any files

Step 1

Add the file name(s) to your .gitignore file.

Step 2

git filter-branch --force --index-filter \
    'git rm -r --cached --ignore-unmatch YOURFILE' \
    --prune-empty --tag-name-filter cat -- --all

Step 3

git push -f origin branch

A big thank you to @mu.

Create dynamic variable name

C# is strongly typed so you can't create variables dynamically. You could use an array but a better C# way would be to use a Dictionary as follows. More on C# dictionaries here.

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Threading.Tasks;

namespace QuickTest
{
    class Program
    {
        static void Main(string[] args)
        {
            Dictionary<string, int> names = new Dictionary<string,int>();

            for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)
            {
                names.Add(String.Format("name{0}", i.ToString()), i);
            }

            var xx1 = names["name1"];
            var xx2 = names["name2"];
            var xx3 = names["name3"];
        }
    }
}

Using SED with wildcard

So, the concept of a "wildcard" in Regular Expressions works a bit differently. In order to match "any character" you would use "." The "*" modifier means, match any number of times.

Finding longest string in array

Available since Javascript 1.8/ECMAScript 5 and available in most older browsers:

var longest = arr.reduce(
    function (a, b) {
        return a.length > b.length ? a : b;
    }
);

Otherwise, a safe alternative:

var longest = arr.sort(
    function (a, b) {
        return b.length - a.length;
    }
)[0];

ICommand MVVM implementation

@Carlo I really like your implementation of this, but I wanted to share my version and how to use it in my ViewModel

First implement ICommand

public class Command : ICommand
{
    public delegate void ICommandOnExecute();
    public delegate bool ICommandOnCanExecute();

    private ICommandOnExecute _execute;
    private ICommandOnCanExecute _canExecute;

    public Command(ICommandOnExecute onExecuteMethod, ICommandOnCanExecute onCanExecuteMethod = null)
    {
        _execute = onExecuteMethod;
        _canExecute = onCanExecuteMethod;
    }

    #region ICommand Members

    public event EventHandler CanExecuteChanged
    {
        add { CommandManager.RequerySuggested += value; }
        remove { CommandManager.RequerySuggested -= value; }
    }

    public bool CanExecute(object parameter)
    {
        return _canExecute?.Invoke() ?? true;
    }

    public void Execute(object parameter)
    {
        _execute?.Invoke();
    }

    #endregion
}

Notice I have removed the parameter from ICommandOnExecute and ICommandOnCanExecute and added a null to the constructor

Then to use in the ViewModel

public Command CommandToRun_WithCheck
{
    get
    {
        return new Command(() =>
        {
            // Code to run
        }, () =>
        {
            // Code to check to see if we can run
            // Return true or false
        });
    }
}

public Command CommandToRun_NoCheck
{
    get
    {
        return new Command(() =>
        {
            // Code to run
        });
    }
}

I just find this way cleaner as I don't need to assign variables and then instantiate, it all done in one go.

Find Nth occurrence of a character in a string

public int GetNthOccurrenceOfChar(string s, char c, int occ)
{
    return String.Join(c.ToString(), s.Split(new char[] { c }, StringSplitOptions.None).Take(occ)).Length;
}

How to present UIAlertController when not in a view controller?

You can try to implement a category on UIViewController with mehtod like - (void)presentErrorMessage; And and inside that method you implement UIAlertController and then present it on self. Than in your client code you will have something like:

[myViewController presentErrorMessage];

In that way you'll avoid unneccessary parametrs and warnings about view not being in window hierarchy.

How to get response status code from jQuery.ajax?

It is probably more idiomatic jQuery to use the statusCode property of the parameter object passed to the the $.ajax function:

$.ajax({
  statusCode: {
    500: function(xhr) {
      if(window.console) console.log(xhr.responseText);
    }
  }
});

However, as Livingston Samuel said, it is not possible to catch 301 status codes in javascript.

How can I account for period (AM/PM) using strftime?

Try replacing %H (Hour on a 24-hour clock) with %I (Hour on a 12-hour clock) ?

Python return statement error " 'return' outside function"

The return statement only makes sense inside functions:

def foo():
    while True:
        return False

Multiple inputs on one line

Yes, you can.

From cplusplus.com:

Because these functions are operator overloading functions, the usual way in which they are called is:

   strm >> variable;

Where strm is the identifier of a istream object and variable is an object of any type supported as right parameter. It is also possible to call a succession of extraction operations as:

   strm >> variable1 >> variable2 >> variable3; //...

which is the same as performing successive extractions from the same object strm.

Just replace strm with cin.

Getting all files in directory with ajax

Javascript which runs on the client machine can't access the local disk file system due to security restrictions.

If you want to access the client's disk file system then look into an embedded client application which you serve up from your webpage, like an Applet, Silverlight or something like that. If you like to access the server's disk file system, then look for the solution in the server side corner using a server side programming language like Java, PHP, etc, whatever your webserver is currently using/supporting.

Default keystore file does not exist?

For Mac/Linux debug keystore, the Android docs have:

keytool -exportcert -list -v \
-alias androiddebugkey -keystore ~/.android/debug.keystore

But there is something that may not be obvious: If you put the backslash, make sure to do a shift + return in terminal after the backslash so that the second that starts with -alias is on a new line. Simply pasting as-is will not work.

Your terminal (if successful) will look something like this:

$ keytool -exportcert -list -v \
? -alias androiddebugkey -keystore ~/.android/debug.keystore
Enter keystore password:

The default debug password is: android

Side note: In Android Studio you can manage signing in:

File > Project Structure > Modules - (Your App) > Signing

Typedef function pointer?

For general case of syntax you can look at annex A of the ANSI C standard.

In the Backus-Naur form from there, you can see that typedef has the type storage-class-specifier.

In the type declaration-specifiers you can see that you can mix many specifier types, the order of which does not matter.

For example, it is correct to say,

long typedef long a;

to define the type a as an alias for long long. So , to understand the typedef on the exhaustive use you need to consult some backus-naur form that defines the syntax (there are many correct grammars for ANSI C, not only that of ISO).

When you use typedef to define an alias for a function type you need to put the alias in the same place where you put the identifier of the function. In your case you define the type FunctionFunc as an alias for a pointer to function whose type checking is disabled at call and returning nothing.

Django CSRF check failing with an Ajax POST request

Easy ajax calls with Django

(26.10.2020)
This is in my opinion much cleaner and simpler than the correct answer.

The view

@login_required
def some_view(request):
    """Returns a json response to an ajax call. (request.user is available in view)"""
    # Fetch the attributes from the request body
    data_attribute = request.GET.get('some_attribute')  # Make sure to use POST/GET correctly
    # DO SOMETHING...
    return JsonResponse(data={}, status=200)

urls.py

urlpatterns = [
    path('some-view-does-something/', views.some_view, name='doing-something'),
]

The ajax call

The ajax call is quite simple, but is sufficient for most cases. You can fetch some values and put them in the data object, then in the view depicted above you can fetch their values again via their names.

You can find the csrftoken function in django's documentation. Basically just copy it and make sure it is rendered before your ajax call so that the csrftoken variable is defined.

$.ajax({
    url: "{% url 'doing-something' %}",
    headers: {'X-CSRFToken': csrftoken},
    data: {'some_attribute': some_value},
    type: "GET",
    dataType: 'json',
    success: function (data) {
        if (data) {
            console.log(data);
            // call function to do something with data
            process_data_function(data);
        }
    }
});

Add HTML to current page with ajax

This might be a bit off topic but I have rarely seen this used and it is a great way to minimize window relocations as well as manual html string creation in javascript.

This is very similar to the one above but this time we are rendering html from the response without reloading the current window.

If you intended to render some kind of html from the data you would receive as a response to the ajax call, it might be easier to send a HttpResponse back from the view instead of a JsonResponse. That allows you to create html easily which can then be inserted into an element.

The view

# The login required part is of course optional
@login_required
def create_some_html(request):
    """In this particular example we are filtering some model by a constraint sent in by
    ajax and creating html to send back for those models who match the search"""
    # Fetch the attributes from the request body (sent in ajax data)
    search_input = request.GET.get('search_input')

    # Get some data that we want to render to the template
    if search_input:
        data = MyModel.objects.filter(name__contains=search_input) # Example
    else:
        data = []

    # Creating an html string using template and some data
    html_response = render_to_string('path/to/creation_template.html', context = {'models': data})

    return HttpResponse(html_response, status=200)

The html creation template for view

creation_template.html

{% for model in models %}
   <li class="xyz">{{ model.name }}</li>
{% endfor %}

urls.py

urlpatterns = [
    path('get-html/', views.create_some_html, name='get-html'),
]

The main template and ajax call

This is the template where we want to add the data to. In this example in particular we have a search input and a button that sends the search input's value to the view. The view then sends a HttpResponse back displaying data matching the search that we can render inside an element.

{% extends 'base.html' %}
{% load static %}
{% block content %}
    <input id="search-input" placeholder="Type something..." value="">
    <button id="add-html-button" class="btn btn-primary">Add Html</button>
    <ul id="add-html-here">
        <!-- This is where we want to render new html -->
    </ul>
{% end block %}

{% block extra_js %}
    <script>
        // When button is pressed fetch inner html of ul
        $("#add-html-button").on('click', function (e){
            e.preventDefault();
            let search_input = $('#search-input').val();
            let target_element = $('#add-html-here');
            $.ajax({
                url: "{% url 'get-html' %}",
                headers: {'X-CSRFToken': csrftoken},
                data: {'search_input': search_input},
                type: "GET",
                dataType: 'html',
                success: function (data) {
                    if (data) {
                        /* You could also use json here to get multiple html to
                        render in different places */
                        console.log(data);
                        // Add the http response to element
                        target_element.html(data);
                    }
                }
            });
        })
    </script>

Another option would be to add engine='python' to the command pandas.read_csv(filename, sep='\t', engine='python')

In python, how do I cast a class object to a dict

It's hard to say without knowing the whole context of the problem, but I would not override __iter__.

I would implement __what_goes_here__ on the class.

as_dict(self:
    d = {...whatever you need...}
    return d

macro run-time error '9': subscript out of range

When you get the error message, you have the option to click on "Debug": this will lead you to the line where the error occurred. The Dark Canuck seems to be right, and I guess the error occurs on the line:

Sheets("Sheet1").protect Password:="btfd"

because most probably the "Sheet1" does not exist. However, if you say "It works fine, but when I save the file I get the message: run-time error '9': subscription out of range" it makes me think the error occurs on the second line:

ActiveWorkbook.Save

Could you please check this by pressing the Debug button first? And most important, as Gordon Bell says, why are you using a macro to protect a workbook?

Bold black cursor in Eclipse deletes code, and I don't know how to get rid of it

This problem, in my case, wasn't related to the Insert key. It was related to Vrapper being enabled and editing like Vim, without my knowledge.

I just toggled the Vrapper Icon in Eclipse top bar of menus and then pressed the Insert Key and the problem was solved.

Hopefully this answer will help someone in the future.

X-Frame-Options on apache

I found that if the application within the httpd server has a rule like "if the X-Frame-Options header exists and has a value, leave it alone; otherwise add the header X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN" then an httpd.conf mod_headers rule like "Header always unset X-Frame-Options" would not suffice. The SAMEORIGIN value would always reach the client.

To remedy this, I add two, not one, mod_headers rules (in the outermost httpd.conf file):

Header set X-Frame-Options ALLOW-FROM http://to.be.deleted.com early
Header unset X-Frame-Options

The first rule tells any internal request handler that some other agent has taken responsibility for clickjack prevention and it can skip its attempt to save the world. It runs with "early" processing. The second rule strips off the entirely unwanted X-Frame-Options header. It runs with "late" processing.

I also add the appropriate Content-Security-Policy headers so that the world remains protected yet multi-sourced Javascript from trusted sites still gets to run.

Writing a new line to file in PHP (line feed)

Replace '\n' with "\n". The escape sequence is not recognized when you use '.

See the manual.

For the question of how to write line endings, see the note here. Basically, different operating systems have different conventions for line endings. Windows uses "\r\n", unix based operating systems use "\n". You should stick to one convention (I'd chose "\n") and open your file in binary mode (fopen should get "wb", not "w").

How do check if a PHP session is empty?

If you want to check whether sessions are available, you probably want to use the session_id() function:

session_id() returns the session id for the current session or the empty string ("") if there is no current session (no current session id exists).

Angular directive how to add an attribute to the element?

A directive which adds another directive to the same element:

Similar answers:

Here is a plunker: http://plnkr.co/edit/ziU8d826WF6SwQllHHQq?p=preview

app.directive("myDir", function($compile) {
  return {
    priority:1001, // compiles first
    terminal:true, // prevent lower priority directives to compile after it
    compile: function(el) {
      el.removeAttr('my-dir'); // necessary to avoid infinite compile loop
      el.attr('ng-click', 'fxn()');
      var fn = $compile(el);
      return function(scope){
        fn(scope);
      };
    }
  };
});

Much cleaner solution - not to use ngClick at all:

A plunker: http://plnkr.co/edit/jY10enUVm31BwvLkDIAO?p=preview

app.directive("myDir", function($parse) {
  return {
    compile: function(tElm,tAttrs){
      var exp = $parse('fxn()');
      return function (scope,elm){
        elm.bind('click',function(){
          exp(scope);
        });
      };
    }
  };
});

Android Material and appcompat Manifest merger failed

Only If you don't want to use androidx

So in my case, I am using a library that was using androidx but I am not using androidx so when I downgraded that library version the problem was resolved.

In my Case:

the above-mentioned library makes problem 13.+ will automatically get a new version of the library which using androidx. So I downgraded library version to:

implementation 'com.github.turing-tech:MaterialScrollBar:13.2.5'

And the problem was resolved.

How can I repeat a character in Bash?

Another option is to use GNU seq and remove all numbers and newlines it generates:

What is the correct wget command syntax for HTTPS with username and password?

It's not that your file is partially downloaded. It fails authentication and hence downloads e.g "index.html" but it names it myfile.zip (since this is what you want to download).

I followed the link suggested by @thomasbabuj and figured it out eventually.

You should try adding --auth-no-challenge and as @thomasbabuj suggested replace your password entry

I.e

wget --auth-no-challenge --user=myusername --ask-password https://test.mydomain.com/files/myfile.zip

Postgres user does not exist?

OS X tends to prefix the system account names with "_"; you don't say what version of OS X you're using, but at least in 10.8 and 10.9 the _postgres user exists in a default install. Note that you won't be able to su to this account (except as root), since it doesn't have a password. sudo -u _postgres, on the other hand, should work fine.

Best practices to test protected methods with PHPUnit

I suggest following workaround for "Henrik Paul"'s workaround/idea :)

You know names of private methods of your class. For example they are like _add(), _edit(), _delete() etc.

Hence when you want to test it from aspect of unit-testing, just call private methods by prefixing and/or suffixing some common word (for example _addPhpunit) so that when __call() method is called (since method _addPhpunit() doesn't exist) of owner class, you just put necessary code in __call() method to remove prefixed/suffixed word/s (Phpunit) and then to call that deduced private method from there. This is another good use of magic methods.

Try it out.

Properly Handling Errors in VBA (Excel)

Block 2 doesn't work because it doesn't reset the Error Handler potentially causing an endless loop. For Error Handling to work properly in VBA, you need a Resume statement to clear the Error Handler. The Resume also reactivates the previous Error Handler. Block 2 fails because a new error would go back to the previous Error Handler causing an infinite loop.

Block 3 fails because there is no Resume statement so any attempt at error handling after that will fail.

Every error handler must be ended by exiting the procedure or a Resume statement. Routing normal execution around an error handler is confusing. This is why error handlers are usually at the bottom.

But here is another way to handle an error in VBA. It handles the error inline like Try/Catch in VB.net There are a few pitfalls, but properly managed it works quite nicely.

Sub InLineErrorHandling()

    'code without error handling

BeginTry1:

    'activate inline error handler
    On Error GoTo ErrHandler1

        'code block that may result in an error
        Dim a As String: a = "Abc"
        Dim c As Integer: c = a 'type mismatch

ErrHandler1:

    'handle the error
    If Err.Number <> 0 Then

        'the error handler has deactivated the previous error handler

        MsgBox (Err.Description)

        'Resume (or exit procedure) is the only way to get out of an error handling block
        'otherwise the following On Error statements will have no effect
        'CAUTION: it also reactivates the previous error handler
        Resume EndTry1
    End If

EndTry1:
    'CAUTION: since the Resume statement reactivates the previous error handler
    'you must ALWAYS use an On Error GoTo statement here
    'because another error here would cause an endless loop
    'use On Error GoTo 0 or On Error GoTo <Label>
    On Error GoTo 0

    'more code with or without error handling

End Sub

Sources:

The key to making this work is to use a Resume statement immediately followed by another On Error statement. The Resume is within the error handler and diverts code to the EndTry1 label. You must immediately set another On Error statement to avoid problems as the previous error handler will "resume". That is, it will be active and ready to handle another error. That could cause the error to repeat and enter an infinite loop.

To avoid using the previous error handler again you need to set On Error to a new error handler or simply use On Error Goto 0 to cancel all error handling.

How to remove an id attribute from a div using jQuery?

The capitalization is wrong, and you have an extra argument.

Do this instead:

$('img#thumb').removeAttr('id');

For future reference, there aren't any jQuery methods that begin with a capital letter. They all take the same form as this one, starting with a lower case, and the first letter of each joined "word" is upper case.

How to programmatically determine the current checked out Git branch

That's one solution. If you add it to your .bashrc, it'll display the current branch in the console.

# git branch
parse_git_branch() {
    git branch 2> /dev/null | sed -e '/^[^*]/d' -e 's/* \(.*\)/(\1) /'
}
$PS1="\$(parse_git_branch)$PS1"

However it's pretty limited. But there is a great project called git sh, which is doing exactly that (and much more).

Content Security Policy: The page's settings blocked the loading of a resource

You have said you can only load scripts from your own site (self). You have then tried to load a script from another site (www.google.com) and, because you've restricted this, you can't. That's the whole point of Content Security Policy (CSP).

You can change your first line to:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Security-Policy" content="default-src *; style-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline'; script-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline' 'unsafe-eval' http://www.google.com">

Or, alternatively, it may be worth removing that line completely until you find out more about CSP. Your current CSP is pretty lax anyway (allowing unsafe-inline, unsafe-eval and a default-src of *), so it is probably not adding too much value, to be honest.

How to ignore parent css style

Please see below typescript for re-applying css class again to an element to override parent container (usually a framework component) css styles and force your custom styles. Your app framework (be it angular/react, probably does this so the parent container css was re-applied and none of your expected effects in css-class-name is showing up for your child element. Call this.overrideParentCssRule(childElement, 'css-class-name'); to do what the framework just did (call this in document.ready or end of event handler):

      overrideParentCssRule(elem: HTMLElement, className: string) {
        let cssRules = this.getCSSStyle(className);
        for (let r: number = 0; r < cssRules.length; r++) {
          let rule: CSSStyleRule = cssRules[r];
          Object.keys(rule.style).forEach(s => {
            if (isNaN(Number(s)) && rule.style[s]) {
              elem.style[s] = rule.style[s];
            }
          });

What causes imported Maven project in Eclipse to use Java 1.5 instead of Java 1.6 by default and how can I ensure it doesn't?

Project specific settings

One more place where this can go wrong is in the project specific settings, in Eclipse.

  1. project properties: click your project and one of the following:

    • Alt + Enter
    • Menu > Project > Properties
    • right click your project > project properties (last item in the menu)
  2. click on "Java Compiler"

  3. Uncheck "Enable project specific settings" (or change them all by hand).

Because of client requirements we had them enabled to keep our projects in 1.6. When it was needed to upgrade to 1.7, we had a hard time because we needed to change the java version all over the place:

  • project POM
  • Eclipse Workspace default
  • project specific settings
  • executing virtual machine (1.6 was used for everything)

How to use Python's pip to download and keep the zipped files for a package?

I always do this to download the packages:

pip install --download /path/to/download/to_packagename

OR

pip install --download=/path/to/packages/downloaded -r requirements.txt

And when I want to install all of those libraries I just downloaded, I do this:

pip install --no-index --find-links="/path/to/downloaded/dependencies" packagename

OR

pip install --no-index --find-links="/path/to/downloaded/packages" -r requirements.txt

Update

Also, to get all the packages installed on one system, you can export them all to requirement.txt that will be used to intall them on another system, we do this:

pip freeze > requirement.txt

Then, the requirement.txt can be used as above for download, or do this to install them from requirement.txt:

pip install -r requirement.txt

Dynamic type languages versus static type languages

Well, both are very, very very very misunderstood and also two completely different things. that aren't mutually exclusive.

Static types are a restriction of the grammar of the language. Statically typed languages strictly could be said to not be context free. The simple truth is that it becomes inconvenient to express a language sanely in context free grammars that doesn't treat all its data simply as bit vectors. Static type systems are part of the grammar of the language if any, they simply restrict it more than a context free grammar could, grammatical checks thus happen in two passes over the source really. Static types correspond to the mathematical notion of type theory, type theory in mathematics simply restricts the legality of some expressions. Like, I can't say 3 + [4,7] in maths, this is because of the type theory of it.

Static types are thus not a way to 'prevent errors' from a theoretical perspective, they are a limitation of the grammar. Indeed, provided that +, 3 and intervals have the usual set theoretical definitions, if we remove the type system 3 + [4,7]has a pretty well defined result that's a set. 'runtime type errors' theoretically do not exist, the type system's practical use is to prevent operations that to human beings would make no sense. Operations are still just the shifting and manipulation of bits of course.

The catch to this is that a type system can't decide if such operations are going to occur or not if it would be allowed to run. As in, exactly partition the set of all possible programs in those that are going to have a 'type error', and those that aren't. It can do only two things:

1: prove that type errors are going to occur in a program
2: prove that they aren't going to occur in a program

This might seem like I'm contradicting myself. But what a C or Java type checker does is it rejects a program as 'ungrammatical', or as it calls it 'type error' if it can't succeed at 2. It can't prove they aren't going to occur, that doesn't mean that they aren't going to occur, it just means it can't prove it. It might very well be that a program which will not have a type error is rejected simply because it can't be proven by the compiler. A simple example being if(1) a = 3; else a = "string";, surely since it's always true, the else-branch will never be executed in the program, and no type error shall occur. But it can't prove these cases in a general way, so it's rejected. This is the major weakness of a lot of statically typed languages, in protecting you against yourself, you're necessarily also protected in cases you don't need it.

But, contrary to popular believe, there are also statically typed languages that work by principle 1. They simply reject all programs of which they can prove it's going to cause a type error, and pass all programs of which they can't. So it's possible they allow programs which have type errors in them, a good example being Typed Racket, it's hybrid between dynamic and static typing. And some would argue that you get the best of both worlds in this system.

Another advantage of static typing is that types are known at compile time, and thus the compiler can use this. If we in Java do "string" + "string" or 3 + 3, both + tokens in text in the end represent a completely different operation and datum, the compiler knows which to choose from the types alone.

Now, I'm going to make a very controversial statement here but bear with me: 'dynamic typing' does not exist.

Sounds very controversial, but it's true, dynamically typed languages are from a theoretical perspective untyped. They are just statically typed languages with only one type. Or simply put, they are languages that are indeed grammatically generated by a context free grammar in practice.

Why don't they have types? Because every operation is defined and allowed on every operant, what's a 'runtime type error' exactly? It's from a theoretical example purely a side-effect. If doing print("string") which prints a string is an operation, then so is length(3), the former has the side effect of writing string to the standard output, the latter simply error: function 'length' expects array as argument., that's it. There is from a theoretical perspective no such thing as a dynamically typed language. They are untyped

All right, the obvious advantage of 'dynamically typed' language is expressive power, a type system is nothing but a limitation of expressive power. And in general, languages with a type system indeed would have a defined result for all those operations that are not allowed if the type system was just ignored, the results would just not make sense to humans. Many languages lose their Turing completeness after applying a type system.

The obvious disadvantage is the fact that operations can occur which would produce results which are nonsensical to humans. To guard against this, dynamically typed languages typically redefine those operations, rather than producing that nonsensical result they redefine it to having the side effect of writing out an error, and possibly halting the program altogether. This is not an 'error' at all, in fact, the language specification usually implies this, this is as much behaviour of the language as printing a string from a theoretical perspective. Type systems thus force the programmer to reason about the flow of the code to make sure that this doesn't happen. Or indeed, reason so that it does happen can also be handy in some points for debugging, showing that it's not an 'error' at all but a well defined property of the language. In effect, the single remnant of 'dynamic typing' that most languages have is guarding against a division by zero. This is what dynamic typing is, there are no types, there are no more types than that zero is a different type than all the other numbers. What people call a 'type' is just another property of a datum, like the length of an array, or the first character of a string. And many dynamically typed languages also allow you to write out things like "error: the first character of this string should be a 'z'".

Another thing is that dynamically typed languages have the type available at runtime and usually can check it and deal with it and decide from it. Of course, in theory it's no different than accessing the first char of an array and seeing what it is. In fact, you can make your own dynamic C, just use only one type like long long int and use the first 8 bits of it to store your 'type' in and write functions accordingly that check for it and perform float or integer addition. You have a statically typed language with one type, or a dynamic language.

In practise this all shows, statically typed languages are generally used in the context of writing commercial software, whereas dynamically typed languages tend to be used in the context of solving some problems and automating some tasks. Writing code in statically typed languages simply takes long and is cumbersome because you can't do things which you know are going to turn out okay but the type system still protects you against yourself for errors you don't make. Many coders don't even realize that they do this because it's in their system but when you code in static languages, you often work around the fact that the type system won't let you do things that can't go wrong, because it can't prove it won't go wrong.

As I noted, 'statically typed' in general means case 2, guilty until proven innocent. But some languages, which do not derive their type system from type theory at all use rule 1: Innocent until proven guilty, which might be the ideal hybrid. So, maybe Typed Racket is for you.

Also, well, for a more absurd and extreme example, I'm currently implementing a language where 'types' are truly the first character of an array, they are data, data of the 'type', 'type', which is itself a type and datum, the only datum which has itself as a type. Types are not finite or bounded statically but new types may be generated based on runtime information.

How do I get JSON data from RESTful service using Python?

If you desire to use Python 3, you can use the following:

import urllib.request
req = urllib.request.Request('url')
with urllib.request.urlopen(req) as response:
    result = json.loads(response.readall().decode('utf-8'))

Android selector & text color

Have you tried setOnFocusChangeListener? Within the handler, you could change the text appearance.

For instance:

TextView text = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.text);
text.setOnFocusChangeListener(new View.OnFocusChangeListener() {
    public void onFocusChange(View v, boolean hasFocus) {
        if (hasFocus) {
            ((TextView)v).setXXXX();
        } else {
            ((TextView)v).setXXXX();
        }
    }
});

You can then apply whatever changes you want when it's focused or not. You can also use the ViewTreeObserver to listen for Global focus changes.

For instance:

View all = findViewById(R.id.id_of_top_level_view_on_layout);
ViewTreeObserver vto = all.getViewTreeObserver();
vto.addOnGlobalFocusChangeListener(new ViewTreeObserver.OnGlobalFocusChangeListener() {
    public void onGlobalFocusChanged(
        View oldFocus, View newFocus) {
        // xxxx
    }
});

I hope this helps or gives you ideas.

Why do we have to specify FromBody and FromUri?

When a parameter has [FromBody], Web API uses the Content-Type header to select a formatter. In this example, the content type is "application/json" and the request body is a raw JSON string (not a JSON object).

At most one parameter is allowed to read from the message body. So this will not work:

// Caution: Will not work!
public HttpResponseMessage Post([FromBody] int id, [FromBody] string name) { ... }

The reason for this rule is that the request body might be stored in a non-buffered stream that can only be read once.

Please go through the website for more details: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/aspnet/web-api/overview/formats-and-model-binding/parameter-binding-in-aspnet-web-api

mvn clean install vs. deploy vs. release

  • mvn install will put your packaged maven project into the local repository, for local application using your project as a dependency.
  • mvn release will basically put your current code in a tag on your SCM, change your version in your projects.
  • mvn deploy will put your packaged maven project into a remote repository for sharing with other developers.

Can we call the function written in one JavaScript in another JS file?

The answer above has an incorrect assumption that the order of inclusion of the files matter. As the alertNumber function is not called until the alertOne function is called. As long as both files are included by time alertOne is called the order of the files does not matter:

[HTML]

<script type="text/javascript" src="file1.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="file2.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
    alertOne( );
</script>

[JS]

// File1.js
function alertNumber( n ) {
    alert( n );
};
// File2.js
function alertOne( ) {
    alertNumber( "one" );
};
// Inline
alertOne( ); // No errors

Or it can be ordered like the following:

[HTML]

<script type="text/javascript" src="file2.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="file1.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
    alertOne( );
</script>

[JS]

// File2.js
function alertOne( ) {
    alertNumber( "one" );
};
// File1.js
function alertNumber( n ) {
    alert( n );
};
// Inline
alertOne( ); // No errors

But if you were to do this:

[HTML]

<script type="text/javascript" src="file2.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
    alertOne( );
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="file1.js"></script>

[JS]

// File2.js
function alertOne( ) {
    alertNumber( "one" );
};
// Inline
alertOne( ); // Error: alertNumber is not defined
// File1.js
function alertNumber( n ) {
    alert( n );
};

It only matters about the variables and functions being available at the time of execution. When a function is defined it does not execute or resolve any of the variables declared within until that function is then subsequently called.

Inclusion of different script files is no different from the script being in that order within the same file, with the exception of deferred scripts:

<script type="text/javascript" src="myscript.js" defer="defer"></script>

then you need to be careful.

Resetting a setTimeout

You can store a reference to that timeout, and then call clearTimeout on that reference.

// in the example above, assign the result
var timeoutHandle = window.setTimeout(...);

// in your click function, call clearTimeout
window.clearTimeout(timeoutHandle);

// then call setTimeout again to reset the timer
timeoutHandle = window.setTimeout(...);

Are 2 dimensional Lists possible in c#?

Here is how to make a 2 dimensional list

        // Generating lists in a loop.
        List<List<string>> biglist = new List<List<string>>();

        for(int i = 1; i <= 10; i++)
        {
            List<string> list1 = new List<string>();
            biglist.Add(list1);
        }

        // Populating the lists
        for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)
        {
            for(int j = 0; j < 10; j++)
            {
                biglist[i].Add((i).ToString() + " " + j.ToString());
            }
        }

        textbox1.Text = biglist[5][9] + "\n";

Be aware of the danger of accessing a location that is not populated.

C# HttpWebRequest of type "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" - how to send '&' character in content body?

First install "Microsoft ASP.NET Web API Client" nuget package:

  PM > Install-Package Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Client

Then use the following function to post your data:

public static async Task<TResult> PostFormUrlEncoded<TResult>(string url, IEnumerable<KeyValuePair<string, string>> postData)
{
    using (var httpClient = new HttpClient())
    {
        using (var content = new FormUrlEncodedContent(postData))
        {
            content.Headers.Clear();
            content.Headers.Add("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded");

            HttpResponseMessage response = await httpClient.PostAsync(url, content);

            return await response.Content.ReadAsAsync<TResult>();
        }
    }
}

And this is how to use it:

TokenResponse tokenResponse =
    await PostFormUrlEncoded<TokenResponse>(OAuth2Url, OAuth2PostData);

or

TokenResponse tokenResponse =
    (Task.Run(async ()
        => await PostFormUrlEncoded<TokenResponse>(OAuth2Url, OAuth2PostData)))
        .Result

or (not recommended)

TokenResponse tokenResponse =
    PostFormUrlEncoded<TokenResponse>(OAuth2Url, OAuth2PostData).Result;

How to set recurring schedule for xlsm file using Windows Task Scheduler

Three important steps - How to Task Schedule an excel.xls(m) file

simply:

  1. make sure the .vbs file is correct
  2. set the Action tab correctly in Task Scheduler
  3. don't turn on "Run whether user is logged on or not"

IN MORE DETAIL...

  1. Here is an example .vbs file:

`

' a .vbs file is just a text file containing visual basic code that has the extension renamed from .txt to .vbs

'Write Excel.xls Sheet's full path here
strPath = "C:\RodsData.xlsm"

'Write the macro name - could try including module name
strMacro = "Update" '    "Sheet1.Macro2"

'Create an Excel instance and set visibility of the instance
Set objApp = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
objApp.Visible = True   '   or False

'Open workbook; Run Macro; Save Workbook with changes; Close; Quit Excel
Set wbToRun = objApp.Workbooks.Open(strPath)
objApp.Run strMacro     '   wbToRun.Name & "!" & strMacro
wbToRun.Save
wbToRun.Close
objApp.Quit

'Leaves an onscreen message!
MsgBox strPath & " " & strMacro & " macro and .vbs successfully completed!", vbInformation
'

`

  1. In the Action tab (Task Scheduler):

set Program/script: = C:\Windows\System32\cscript.exe

set Add arguments (optional): = C:\MyVbsFile.vbs

  1. Finally, don't turn on "Run whether user is logged on or not".

That should work.

How do I import the javax.servlet API in my Eclipse project?

You should above all never manually copy/download/move/include the individual servletcontainer-specific libraries like servlet-api.jar

@BalusC,

I would prefer to use the exact classes that my application is going to use rather than one provided by Eclipse (when I am feeling like a paranoid developer).

Another solution would be to use Eclipse "Configure Build Path" > Libraries > Add External Jars, and add servlet api of whatever Container one chooses to use.

And follow @kaustav datta's solution when using ant to build - have a property like tomcat.home or weblogic.home. However it introduces another constraint that the developer must install Weblogic on his/her local machine if weblogic is being used ! Any other cleaner solution?

jquery AJAX and json format

Currently you are sending the data as typical POST values, which look like this:

If you want to send data as json you need to create an object with data and stringify it.

data: JSON.stringify(someobject)

Oracle SqlDeveloper JDK path

In your SQL Developer Bin Folder find

\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf

It should be

SetJavaHome \path\to\jdk

You said it was ../../jdk originally so you could ultimatey do 1 of two things:

SetJavaHome C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_60

This is assuming that you have JDK 1.7.60 installed in that directory; you don't want to point it to the bin folder you want the whole JDK folder.

OR

The second thing you can do is find the jdk folder in the sqldeveloper folder for me its sqldeveloper\jdk and copy and paste the contents from C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_60. You then have to revert your change to read

SetJavaHome ../../jdk

in your sqldeveloper.conf

If all else fails you can always redownload the sqldeveloper that already contains the jdk7 all zipped up and ready for you to run at will: Download SQL Developer The file I talk about is called Windows 64-bit - zip file includes the JDK 7

Can "list_display" in a Django ModelAdmin display attributes of ForeignKey fields?

This one's already accepted, but if there are any other dummies out there (like me) that didn't immediately get it from the presently accepted answer, here's a bit more detail.

The model class referenced by the ForeignKey needs to have a __unicode__ method within it, like here:

class Category(models.Model):
    name = models.CharField(max_length=50)

    def __unicode__(self):
        return self.name

That made the difference for me, and should apply to the above scenario. This works on Django 1.0.2.

Typing the Enter/Return key using Python and Selenium

For Selenium Remote Control with Java:

selenium.keyPress("elementID", "\13");

For Selenium WebDriver (a.k.a. Selenium 2) with Java:

driver.findElement(By.id("elementID")).sendKeys(Keys.ENTER);

Or,

driver.findElement(By.id("elementID")).sendKeys(Keys.RETURN);

Another way to press Enter in WebDriver is by using the Actions class:

Actions action = new Actions(driver);
action.sendKeys(driver.findElement(By.id("elementID")), Keys.ENTER).build().perform();

PL/SQL, how to escape single quote in a string?

In addition to DCookie's answer above, you can also use chr(39) for a single quote.

I find this particularly useful when I have to create a number of insert/update statements based on a large amount of existing data.

Here's a very quick example:

Lets say we have a very simple table, Customers, that has 2 columns, FirstName and LastName. We need to move the data into Customers2, so we need to generate a bunch of INSERT statements.

Select 'INSERT INTO Customers2 (FirstName, LastName) ' ||
       'VALUES (' || chr(39) || FirstName || chr(39) ',' ||
       chr(39) || LastName || chr(39) || ');' From Customers;

I've found this to be very useful when moving data from one environment to another, or when rebuilding an environment quickly.

Lollipop : draw behind statusBar with its color set to transparent

I will be adding some more information here. The latest Android developments have made it pretty easy to handle a lot of cases in status bar. Following are my observations from the styles.xml

  1. Background color: for SDK 21+, as a lot of answers mentioned,<item name="android:windowTranslucentStatus">true</item> will make the status bar transparent and show in front of UI. Your Activity will take the whole space of the top.
  2. Background color: again,for SDK 21+, <item name="android:statusBarColor">@color/your_color</item> will simply give a color to your status bar, without affecting anything else.

  3. However, in later devices (Android M/+), the icons started coming in different shades. The OS can give a darker shade of gray to the icons for SDK 23/+ , if you override your styles.xml file in values-23 folder and add <item name="android:windowLightStatusBar">true</item>.
    This way, you will be providing your user with a more visible status bar, if your status bar has a light color( think of how a lot of google apps have light background yet the icons are visible there in a greyish color).
    I would suggest you to use this, if you are giving color to your status bar via point #2

  4. In the most recent devices, SDK 29/+ comes with a system wide light and dark theme, controllable by the user. As devs, we are also supposed to override our style file in a new values-night folder, to give user 2 different experiences.
    Here again, I have found the point #2 to be effective in providing the "background color to status bar". But system was not changing the color of status bar icons for my app. since my day version of style consisted of lighter theme, this means that users will suffer from low visibility ( white icons on lighter background)
    This problem can be solved by using the point #3 approach or by overriding style file in values-29 folder and using a newer api <item name="android:enforceStatusBarContrast">true</item> . This will automatically enforce the grayish tint to icons, if your background color is too light.

How to include a PHP variable inside a MySQL statement

The rules of adding a PHP variable inside of any MySQL statement are plain and simple:

  1. Any variable that represents an SQL data literal, (or, to put it simply - an SQL string, or a number) MUST be added through a prepared statement. No exceptions.
  2. Any other query part, such as an SQL keyword, a table or a field name, or an operator - must be filtered through a white list.

So as your example only involves data literals, then all variables must be added through placeholders (also called parameters). To do so:

  • In your SQL statement, replace all variables with placeholders
  • prepare the resulting query
  • bind variables to placeholders
  • execute the query

And here is how to do it with all popular PHP database drivers:

Adding data literals using mysql ext

Such a driver doesn't exist.

Adding data literals using mysqli

$type = 'testing';
$reporter = "John O'Hara";
$query = "INSERT INTO contents (type, reporter, description)
             VALUES(?, ?, 'whatever')";
$stmt = $mysqli->prepare($query);
$stmt->bind_param("ss", $type, $reporter);
$stmt->execute();

The code is a bit complicated but the detailed explanation of all these operators can be found in my article, How to run an INSERT query using Mysqli, as well as a solution that eases the process dramatically.

For a SELECT query you will need to add just a call to get_result() method to get a familiar mysqli_result from which you can fetch the data the usual way:

$reporter = "John O'Hara";
$stmt = $mysqli->prepare("SELECT * FROM users WHERE name=?");
$stmt->bind_param("s", $reporter);
$stmt->execute();
$result = $stmt->get_result();
$row = $result->fetch_assoc(); // or while (...)

Adding data literals using PDO

$type = 'testing';
$reporter = "John O'Hara";
$query = "INSERT INTO contents (type, reporter, description)
             VALUES(?, ?, 'whatever')";
$stmt = $pdo->prepare($query);
$stmt->execute([$type, $reporter]);

In PDO, we can have the bind and execute parts combined, which is very convenient. PDO also supports named placeholders which some find extremely convenient.

Adding keywords or identifiers

Sometimes we have to add a variable that represents another part of a query, such as a keyword or an identifier (a database, table or a field name). It's a rare case but it's better to be prepared.

In this case, your variable must be checked against a list of values explicitly written in your script. This is explained in my other article, Adding a field name in the ORDER BY clause based on the user's choice:

Unfortunately, PDO has no placeholder for identifiers (table and field names), therefore a developer must filter them out manually. Such a filter is often called a "white list" (where we only list allowed values) as opposed to a "black-list" where we list disallowed values.

So we have to explicitly list all possible variants in the PHP code and then choose from them.

Here is an example:

$orderby = $_GET['orderby'] ?: "name"; // set the default value
$allowed = ["name","price","qty"]; // the white list of allowed field names
$key = array_search($orderby, $allowed, true); // see if we have such a name
if ($key === false) {
    throw new InvalidArgumentException("Invalid field name");
}

Exactly the same approach should be used for the direction,

$direction = $_GET['direction'] ?: "ASC";
$allowed = ["ASC","DESC"];
$key = array_search($direction, $allowed, true);
if ($key === false) {
    throw new InvalidArgumentException("Invalid ORDER BY direction");
}

After such a code, both $direction and $orderby variables can be safely put in the SQL query, as they are either equal to one of the allowed variants or there will be an error thrown.

The last thing to mention about identifiers, they must be also formatted according to the particular database syntax. For MySQL it should be backtick characters around the identifier. So the final query string for our order by example would be

$query = "SELECT * FROM `table` ORDER BY `$orderby` $direction";

Using event.target with React components

First argument in update method is SyntheticEvent object that contains common properties and methods to any event, it is not reference to React component where there is property props.

if you need pass argument to update method you can do it like this

onClick={ (e) => this.props.onClick(e, 'home', 'Home') }

and get these arguments inside update method

update(e, space, txt){
   console.log(e.target, space, txt);
}

Example

event.target gives you the native DOMNode, then you need to use the regular DOM APIs to access attributes. For instance getAttribute or dataset

<button
  data-space="home"
  className="home"
  data-txt="Home"
  onClick={ this.props.onClick }
/>
  Button
</button>

onClick(e) {
   console.log(e.target.dataset.txt, e.target.dataset.space);
}

Example

Regular expression: zero or more occurrences of optional character /

/*

If your delimiters are slash-based, escape it:

\/*

* means "0 or more of the previous repeatable pattern", which can be a single character, a character class or a group.

How do I get the difference between two Dates in JavaScript?

Below code will return the days left from today to futures date.

Dependencies: jQuery and MomentJs.

var getDaysLeft = function (date) {
  var today = new Date();
  var daysLeftInMilliSec = Math.abs(new Date(moment(today).format('YYYY-MM-DD')) - new Date(date));
  var daysLeft = daysLeftInMilliSec / (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24);
  return daysLeft;
};

getDaysLeft('YYYY-MM-DD');

How to include "zero" / "0" results in COUNT aggregate?

if you do the outer join (with the count), and then use this result as a sub-table, you can get 0 as expected (thanks to the nvl function)

Ex:

select P.person_id, nvl(A.nb_apptmts, 0) from
(SELECT person.person_id

"Eliminate render-blocking CSS in above-the-fold content"

A related question has been asked before: What is “above-the-fold content” in Google Pagespeed?

Firstly you have to notice that this is all about 'mobile pages'.
So when I interpreted your question and screenshot correctly, then this is not for your site!

On the contrary - doing some of the things advised by Google in their guidelines will things make worse than better for 'normal' websites.
And not everything that comes from Google is the "holy grail" just because it comes from Google. And they themselves are not a good role model if you have a look at their HTML markup.

The best advice I could give you is:

  • Set width and height on replaced elements in your CSS, so that the browser can layout the elements and doesn't have to wait for the replaced content!

Additionally why do you use different CSS files, rather than just one?
The additional request is worse than the small amount of data volume. And after the first request the CSS file is cached anyway.

The things one should always take care of are:

  • reduce the number of requests as much as possible
  • keep your overall page weight as low as possible

And don't puzzle your brain about how to get 100% of Google's PageSpeed Insights tool ...! ;-)

Addition 1: Here is the page on which Google shows us, what they recommend for Optimize CSS Delivery.

As said before, I don't think that this is neither realistic nor that it makes sense for a "normal" website! Because mainly when you have a responsive web design it is most certain that you use media queries and other layout styles. So if you are not gonna load your CSS first and in a blocking manner you'll get a FOUT (Flash Of Unstyled Text). I really do not believe that this is "better" than at least some more milliseconds to render the page!

Imho Google is starting a new "hype" (when I have a look at all the question about it here on Stackoverflow) ...!

How to get current time and date in Android

For those who might rather prefer a customized format, you can use:

DateFormat df = new SimpleDateFormat("EEE, d MMM yyyy, HH:mm");
String date = df.format(Calendar.getInstance().getTime());

Whereas you can have DateFormat patterns such as:

"yyyy.MM.dd G 'at' HH:mm:ss z" ---- 2001.07.04 AD at 12:08:56 PDT
"hh 'o''clock' a, zzzz" ----------- 12 o'clock PM, Pacific Daylight Time
"EEE, d MMM yyyy HH:mm:ss Z"------- Wed, 4 Jul 2001 12:08:56 -0700
"yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSSZ"------- 2001-07-04T12:08:56.235-0700
"yyMMddHHmmssZ"-------------------- 010704120856-0700
"K:mm a, z" ----------------------- 0:08 PM, PDT
"h:mm a" -------------------------- 12:08 PM
"EEE, MMM d, ''yy" ---------------- Wed, Jul 4, '01

In CSS what is the difference between "." and "#" when declaring a set of styles?

Like pretty much everyone has stated already:

A period (.) indicates a class, and a hash (#) indicates an ID.

The fundamental difference between is that you can reuse a class on your page over and over, whereas an ID can be used once. That is, of course, if you are sticking to WC3 standards.

A page will still render if you have multiple elements with the same ID, but you will run into problems if/when you try to dynamically update said elements by calling them with their ID, since they are not unique.

It is also useful to note that ID properties will supersede class properties.

jQuery get textarea text

Methinks the word "console" is causing the confusion.

If you want to emulate an old-style full/half duplex console, you'd use something like this:

$('console').keyup(function(event){
    $.get("url", { keyCode: event.which }, ... );
    return true;
});

event.which has the key that was pressed. For backspace handling, event.which === 8.

How do I point Crystal Reports at a new database

Choose Database | Set Datasource Location... Select the database node (yellow-ish cylinder) of the current connection, then select the database node of the desired connection (you may need to authenticate), then click Update.

You will need to do this for the 'Subreports' nodes as well.

FYI, you can also do individual tables by selecting each individually, then choosing Update.

What's the difference between ngOnInit and ngAfterViewInit of Angular2?

ngOnInit() is called right after the directive's data-bound properties have been checked for the first time, and before any of its children have been checked. It is invoked only once when the directive is instantiated.

ngAfterViewInit() is called after a component's view, and its children's views, are created. Its a lifecycle hook that is called after a component's view has been fully initialized.

How do I create and store md5 passwords in mysql

Please don't use MD5 for password hashing. Such passwords can be cracked in milliseconds. You're sure to be pwned by cybercriminals.

PHP offers a high-quality and future proof password hashing subsystem based on a reliable random salt and multiple rounds of Rijndael / AES encryption.

When a user first provides a password you can hash it like this:

 $pass = 'whatever the user typed in';
 $hashed_password = password_hash( "secret pass phrase", PASSWORD_DEFAULT );

Then, store $hashed_password in a varchar(255) column in MySQL. Later, when the user wants to log in, you can retrieve the hashed password from MySQL and compare it to the password the user offered to log in.

 $pass = 'whatever the user typed in';
 $hashed_password = 'what you retrieved from MySQL for this user';
 if ( password_verify ( $pass , $hashed_password )) {
    /* future proof the password */
    if ( password_needs_rehash($hashed_password , PASSWORD_DEFAULT)) {
       /* recreate the hash */
       $rehashed_password = password_hash($pass, PASSWORD_DEFAULT );
       /* store the rehashed password in MySQL */
     }
     /* password verified, let the user in */
 }
 else {
     /* password not verified, tell the intruder to get lost */
 }

How does this future-proofing work? Future releases of PHP will adapt to match faster and easier to crack encryption. If it's necessary to rehash passwords to make them harder to crack, the future implementation of the password_needs_rehash() function will detect that.

Don't reinvent the flat tire. Use professionally designed and vetted open source code for security.

I had the same problem but it didn't work for Python 3. I followed this and it solved my problem:

Python __call__ special method practical example

I find it useful because it allows me to create APIs that are easy to use (you have some callable object that requires some specific arguments), and are easy to implement because you can use Object Oriented practices.

The following is code I wrote yesterday that makes a version of the hashlib.foo methods that hash entire files rather than strings:

# filehash.py
import hashlib

class Hasher(object):
    """
    A wrapper around the hashlib hash algorithms that allows an entire file to
    be hashed in a chunked manner.
    """
    def __init__(self, algorithm):
        self.algorithm = algorithm

    def __call__(self, file):
        hash = self.algorithm()
        with open(file, 'rb') as f:
            for chunk in iter(lambda: f.read(4096), ''):
                hash.update(chunk)
        return hash.hexdigest()

md5    = Hasher(hashlib.md5)
sha1   = Hasher(hashlib.sha1)
sha224 = Hasher(hashlib.sha224)
sha256 = Hasher(hashlib.sha256)
sha384 = Hasher(hashlib.sha384)
sha512 = Hasher(hashlib.sha512)

This implementation allows me to use the functions in a similar fashion to the hashlib.foo functions:

from filehash import sha1
print sha1('somefile.txt')

Of course I could have implemented it a different way, but in this case it seemed like a simple approach.

Oracle: If Table Exists

MVC 3: How to render a view without its layout page when loaded via ajax?

Main differences between SOAP and RESTful web services in Java

SOAP web service always make a POST operation whereas using REST you can choose specific HTTP methods like GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE.

Example: to get an item using SOAP you should create a request XML, but in the case of REST you can just specify the item id in the URL itself.

Declare and assign multiple string variables at the same time

All the information is in the existing answers, but I personally wished for a concise summary, so here's an attempt at it; the commands use int variables for brevity, but they apply analogously to any type, including string.

To declare multiple variables and:

  • either: initialize them each:
int i = 0, j = 1; // declare and initialize each; `var` is NOT supported as of C# 8.0
  • or: initialize them all to the same value:
int i, j; // *declare* first (`var` is NOT supported)
i = j = 42;  // then *initialize*

// Single-statement alternative that is perhaps visually less obvious:
// Initialize the first variable with the desired value, then use
// the first variable to initialize the remaining ones.
int i = 42, j = i, k = i;

What doesn't work:

  • You cannot use var in the above statements, because var only works with (a) a declaration that has an initialization value (from which the type can be inferred), and (b), as of C# 8.0, if that declaration is the only one in the statement (otherwise you'll get compilation error error CS0819: Implicitly-typed variables cannot have multiple declarators).

  • Placing an initialization value only after the last variable in a multiple-declarations statement initializes the last variable only:

    int i, j = 1;// initializes *only* j

How to split a dos path into its components in Python

It works for me:

>>> a=r"d:\stuff\morestuff\furtherdown\THEFILE.txt"
>>> a.split("\\")
['d:', 'stuff', 'morestuff', 'furtherdown', 'THEFILE.txt']

Sure you might need to also strip out the colon from the first component, but keeping it makes it possible to re-assemble the path.

The r modifier marks the string literal as "raw"; notice how embedded backslashes are not doubled.

Use a content script to access the page context variables and functions

You can use a utility function I've created for the purpose of running code in the page context and getting back the returned value.

This is done by serializing a function to a string and injecting it to the web page.

The utility is available here on GitHub.

Usage examples -

// Some code that exists only in the page context -
window.someProperty = 'property';
function someFunction(name = 'test') {
    return new Promise(res => setTimeout(()=>res('resolved ' + name), 1200));
}
/////////////////

// Content script examples -

await runInPageContext(() => someProperty); // returns 'property'

await runInPageContext(() => someFunction()); // returns 'resolved test'

await runInPageContext(async (name) => someFunction(name), 'with name' ); // 'resolved with name'

await runInPageContext(async (...args) => someFunction(...args), 'with spread operator and rest parameters' ); // returns 'resolved with spread operator and rest parameters'

await runInPageContext({
    func: (name) => someFunction(name),
    args: ['with params object'],
    doc: document,
    timeout: 10000
} ); // returns 'resolved with params object'

"call to undefined function" error when calling class method

Mates,

I stumbled upon this error today while testing a simple script. I am not using "class" function though so it take it with grain of salt. I was calling function before its definition & declaration ...something like this

      try{
             foo();
         }
       catch (exception $e)
           {
            echo "$e->getMessage()";
           }

       function foo(){
                       echo "blah blah blah";
                     }

so php was throwing me error "call to undefined function ".

This kinda seem classic programming error but may help someone in need of clue.

SQL/mysql - Select distinct/UNIQUE but return all columns?

If I understood your problem correctly, it's similar to one I just had. You want to be able limit the usability of DISTINCT to a specified field, rather than applying it to all the data.

If you use GROUP BY without an aggregate function, which ever field you GROUP BY will be your DISTINCT filed.

If you make your query:

SELECT * from table GROUP BY field1;

It will show all your results based on a single instance of field1.

For example, if you have a table with name, address and city. A single person has multiple addresses recorded, but you just want a single address for the person, you can query as follows:

SELECT * FROM persons GROUP BY name;

The result will be that only one instance of that name will appear with its address, and the other one will be omitted from the resulting table. Caution: if your fileds have atomic values such as firstName, lastName you want to group by both.

SELECT * FROM persons GROUP BY lastName, firstName;

because if two people have the same last name and you only group by lastName, one of those persons will be omitted from the results. You need to keep those things into consideration. Hope this helps.

How to create new div dynamically, change it, move it, modify it in every way possible, in JavaScript?

Have you tried JQuery? Vanilla javascript can be tough. Try using this:

$('.container-element').add('<div>Insert Div Content</div>');

.container-element is a JQuery selector that marks the element with the class "container-element" (presumably the parent element in which you want to insert your divs). Then the add() function inserts HTML into the container-element.

lambda expression join multiple tables with select and where clause

If I understand your questions correctly, all you need to do is add the .Where(m => m.r.u.UserId == 1):

    var UserInRole = db.UserProfiles.
        Join(db.UsersInRoles, u => u.UserId, uir => uir.UserId,
        (u, uir) => new { u, uir }).
        Join(db.Roles, r => r.uir.RoleId, ro => ro.RoleId, (r, ro) => new { r, ro })
        .Where(m => m.r.u.UserId == 1)
        .Select (m => new AddUserToRole
        {
            UserName = m.r.u.UserName,
            RoleName = m.ro.RoleName
        });

Hope that helps.

Bootstrap full-width text-input within inline-form

I know that this question is pretty old, but I stumbled upon it recently, found a solution that I liked better, and figured I'd share it.

Now that Bootstrap 5 is available, there's a new approach that works similarly to using input-groups, but looks more like an ordinary form, without any CSS tweaks:

<div class="row g-3 align-items-center">
    <div class="col-auto">
        <label>Label:</label>
    </div>
    <div class="col">
        <input class="form-control">
    </div>
    <div class="col-auto">
        <button type="button" class="btn btn-primary">Button</button>
    </div>
</div>

The col-auto class makes those columns fit themselves to their contents (the label and the button in this case), and anything with a col class should be evenly distributed to take up the remaining space.

How can I set a website image that will show as preview on Facebook?

1. Include the Open Graph XML namespace extension to your HTML declaration

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"
      xmlns:fb="http://ogp.me/ns/fb#">

2. Inside your <head></head> use the following meta tag to define the image you want to use

<meta property="og:image" content="fully_qualified_image_url_here" />

Read more about open graph protocol here.

After doing the above, use the Facebook "Object Debugger" if the image does not show up correctly. Also note the first time shared it still won't show up unless height and width are also specified, see Share on Facebook - Thumbnail not showing for the first time

The size in figsize=(5,3) is given in inches per (width, height)

https://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/stable/reference/api/pandas.DataFrame.plot.html

How do I remove the height style from a DIV using jQuery?

Thank guys for showing all those examples. I was still having trouble with my contact page on small media screens like below 480px after trying your examples. Bootstrap kept inserting height: auto.

Element Inspector / Devtools will show the height in:

element.style {

}

In my case I was seeing: section#contact.contact-container | 303 x 743 in the browser window.

So the following full-length works to eliminate the issue:

$('section#contact.contact-container').height('');

Send password when using scp to copy files from one server to another

Firts as mentioned by David, we need to set up public/private key.

Then using below command had worked for me, means it didn't prompt me for password as we are passing private key in the command using -i option

scp -i path/to/private_key path/to/local/file remoteUserId@remoteHost:/path/to/remote/folder

Here path/to/private_key is private key file which we generated while setting up public/private key.

Getting multiple selected checkbox values in a string in javascript and PHP

In some cases it might make more sense to process each selected item one at a time.

In other words, make a separate server call for each selected item passing the value of the selected item. In some cases the list will need to be processed as a whole, but in some not.

I needed to process a list of selected people and then have the results of the query show up on an existing page beneath the existing data for that person. I initially though of passing the whole list to the server, parsing the list, then passing back the data for all of the patients. I would have then needed to parse the returning data and insert it into the page in each of the appropriate places. Sending the request for the data one person at a time turned out to be much easier. Javascript for getting the selected items is described here: check if checkbox is checked javascript and jQuery for the same is described here: How to check whether a checkbox is checked in jQuery?.

How can I start PostgreSQL server on Mac OS X?

There is some edge case that maybe will be helpful for someone:

There is an option that you will have postgres.pid filled with some PID. If you restart your machine, and before PostgreSQL will be back again, some other process will take that PID.

If that will happen, both the pg_ctl status and brew service are asked about the PostgreSQL status, will tell you that it is up.

Just do ps aux | grep <yourPID> and check if it is really PostgreSQL.

Using BeautifulSoup to extract text without tags

PHP 5 disable strict standards error

The default value of error_reporting flag is E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE if not set in php.ini. But in some installation (particularly installations targeting development environments) has E_ALL | E_STRICT set as value of this flag (this is the recommended value during development). In some cases, specially when you'll want to run some open source projects, that was developed prior to PHP 5.3 era and not yet updated with best practices defined by PHP 5.3, in your development environment, you'll probably run into getting some messages like you are getting. The best way to cope up on this situation, is to set only E_ALL as the value of error_reporting flag, either in php.ini or in code (probably in a front-controller like index.php in web-root as follows:

if(defined('E_STRICT')){
    error_reporting(E_ALL);
}

Handlebars/Mustache - Is there a built in way to loop through the properties of an object?

I was using old version 1.0.beta.6 of handlebars, i think somewhere during 1.1 - 1.3 this functionality was added, so updating to 1.3.0 solved the issue, here is the usage:

Usage:

{{#each object}}
  Key {{@key}} : Value {{this}}
{{/people}}

NUnit vs. MbUnit vs. MSTest vs. xUnit.net

NUnit is probably the most supported by the 3rd party tools. It's also been around longer than the other three.

I personally don't care much about unit test frameworks, mocking libraries are IMHO much more important (and lock you in much more). Just pick one and stick with it.

How do I find which program is using port 80 in Windows?

If you want to be really fancy, download TCPView from Sysinternals:

TCPView is a Windows program that will show you detailed listings of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the local and remote addresses and state of TCP connections. On Windows Server 2008, Vista, and XP, TCPView also reports the name of the process that owns the endpoint. TCPView provides a more informative and conveniently presented subset of the Netstat program that ships with Windows.

On Duplicate Key Update same as insert

The UPDATE statement is given so that older fields can be updated to new value. If your older values are the same as your new ones, why would you need to update it in any case?

For eg. if your columns a to g are already set as 2 to 8; there would be no need to re-update it.

Alternatively, you can use:

INSERT INTO table (id,a,b,c,d,e,f,g)
VALUES (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8)
ON DUPLICATE KEY
    UPDATE a=a, b=b, c=c, d=d, e=e, f=f, g=g;

To get the id from LAST_INSERT_ID; you need to specify the backend app you're using for the same.

For LuaSQL, a conn:getlastautoid() fetches the value.

Opencv - Grayscale mode Vs gray color conversion

Note: This is not a duplicate, because the OP is aware that the image from cv2.imread is in BGR format (unlike the suggested duplicate question that assumed it was RGB hence the provided answers only address that issue)

To illustrate, I've opened up this same color JPEG image:

enter image description here

once using the conversion

img = cv2.imread(path)
img_gray = cv2.cvtColor(img, cv2.COLOR_BGR2GRAY)

and another by loading it in gray scale mode

img_gray_mode = cv2.imread(path, cv2.IMREAD_GRAYSCALE)

Like you've documented, the diff between the two images is not perfectly 0, I can see diff pixels in towards the left and the bottom

enter image description here

I've summed up the diff too to see

import numpy as np
np.sum(diff)
# I got 6143, on a 494 x 750 image

I tried all cv2.imread() modes

Among all the IMREAD_ modes for cv2.imread(), only IMREAD_COLOR and IMREAD_ANYCOLOR can be converted using COLOR_BGR2GRAY, and both of them gave me the same diff against the image opened in IMREAD_GRAYSCALE

The difference doesn't seem that big. My guess is comes from the differences in the numeric calculations in the two methods (loading grayscale vs conversion to grayscale)

Naturally what you want to avoid is fine tuning your code on a particular version of the image just to find out it was suboptimal for images coming from a different source.

In brief, let's not mix the versions and types in the processing pipeline.

So I'd keep the image sources homogenous, e.g. if you have capturing the image from a video camera in BGR, then I'd use BGR as the source, and do the BGR to grayscale conversion cv2.cvtColor(img, cv2.COLOR_BGR2GRAY)

Vice versa if my ultimate source is grayscale then I'd open the files and the video capture in gray scale cv2.imread(path, cv2.IMREAD_GRAYSCALE)

Sure you can query your Database with SHOW TABLES and then loop through all the records but that is extra code lines and work.

PHP has a built in function to list all tables into an array for you :

jQuery bind/unbind 'scroll' event on $(window)

Very old question, but in case someone else stumbles across it, I would recommend trying:

}, 300);

The solution for me was very simple (after 10 hours of searching). Above where your folders are there is a combobox that says "android" click it and choose "Project".
